- 1:00I'm with journalist Enzo Mauri, who introduces
- 1:03the current topic. Good morning, today I'm going
- 1:06to talk about a great success of the 80s, with
- 1:09that incomprehensible intro and the powerful
- 1:11voice of the interpreter. When it came out on
- 1:12July 27, 1987, The British Rick Hesley's Never
- 1:17Gonna Give You Up soon became one of the most
- 1:19representative songs of the 80s. strikes because
- 1:24that trench coat should be in some sort of Planet
- 1:27Hollywood or, you know, some sort of all of them.
- 1:31Your closet. On my back. Where is it? I actually
- 1:37I did an outside broadcast in Northern Ireland
- 1:40back in the day right in the beginning of all
- 1:41of that and a bunch of kids basically as I was
- 1:43kind of trying... Trying to be on the radio.
- 1:59It's a very fun situation, but I don't know how
- 2:02you feel about it. No, I've been absolutely fine
- 2:04with it. We have a daughter and she's 26 years
- 2:06old now. And when that kind of started about
- 2:0810 years ago, she literally sat me down on the
- 2:10couch and said, did you realize it's got nothing
- 2:12to do with you? Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick
- 2:15Hesley remained in the charts from October 1987
- 2:18to January 1988, reaching the third position.
- 2:21At 19 years old, not yet a singer, Rick Hesley
- 2:23performed in English pubs playing drums with
- 2:26the band called FBI. I think it's the intention
- 2:29of never gonna give you up. Never gonna stop
- 2:33until you turn off your computer and start it
- 2:35up. of pop production with artists like Nick
- 3:00Kershaw, Kyle Minogue, but also Donna Summer,
- 3:03and formations like Dead or Alive and Banana
- 3:05Rama. www .lexmcl .it Rick Hasley was so shy
- 3:29that the producers feared that he would compromise
- 3:31his career, so they decided to make him do a
- 3:34little bit of gavetta. In 1986, Rick Hasley witnessed
- 3:38the phone fight between Pete Waterman and his
- 3:40partner. He would have wanted to leave her, but
- 3:42he didn't have the courage. At the end of the
- 3:45phone call, Rick told him, You are never gonna
- 3:47give her up. The phrase became the idea for a
- 3:49song. Don't tell me NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP was
- 4:07killed by Rick Casley in multiple versions, then
- 4:10incredibly cornered by the eight -can Waterman
- 4:13trio, taken as it was by other producers. Finally,
- 4:16the day came when the song was proposed to the
- 4:18RCA directors. None of them wanted to believe
- 4:21that that warm and baritone voice belonged to
- 4:23a white English boy, so much so that Rick Casley
- 4:26had to prove it in person. The video of the song,
- 4:29made in economy, saw Rick Casley dancing and
- 4:31singing in the clothes worn by himself, the ones
- 4:34he still wears. in the 2022 version of the Never
- 4:38Gonna Give You Up video made for a insurance
- 4:41company. With his first album, Whenever You Need
- 4:51Somebody, which was synonymous with the title
- 4:53of the next single, Rick Hasley proved to be
- 4:56not only a valid performer, but also an excellent
- 4:59composer. Four of the ten songs contained were
- 5:01in fact composed by him, The Love Has Gone, Slippin'
- 5:04Away, No More Lookin' For Love, You Mummi. The
- 5:07album sold 15 .2 million copies around the world.
- 5:11In 2007, the phenomenon Never Gonna Give You
- 5:13Up surfaced on the web thanks to Rick Rollin.
- 5:16With such terms, it is defined as a mechanism,
- 5:18a sort of bubble, through which an internet user
- 5:21attracts people with a link described in a captivating
- 5:24way. The link actually recreated the video of
- 5:26the singer and English composer, instead of the
- 5:29one actually expected. It is true that the initiative
- 5:32was very successful. In 2020, the video of Never
- 5:35Gonna Give You Up exceeded 800 million views.
- 5:38Thank you Denzo Mauri for the modern theme. See
- 5:41you in the next episode of 70 per 80. Hello,
