- 0:00DANI: I got my aura read at a press party the other night.
- 0:03KARA: What'd they say?
- 0:04DANI: Well, it was a weird process.
- 0:05I thought that they literally just take your picture, but they like have your,
- 0:10they put your hands on like these metal.
- 0:13Honestly it was kind of giving Scientology.
- 0:15KARA: Oh, like the
- 0:15DANI: Yeah,
- 0:16KARA: It's not the thesis.
- 0:17It's a-
- 0:17DANI: I don't know what they're called, but I have held them.
- 0:20KARA: That's very LA of you.
- 0:21DANI: I went with my friends for our community college photography class
- 0:27to take pictures of Scientologists.
- 0:29So the Scientology Museum in, well there's lots of them, but the, like Scientology
- 0:35headquarters on Hollywood Boulevard.
- 0:37I don't know if it's still here in this capacity.
- 0:39KARA: Is it the big blue building?
- 0:41DANI: Yeah.
- 0:41Big blue one.
- 0:42They have in their basement a full museum.
- 0:47KARA: Oh.
- 0:47DANI: That like you can, that we at the time signed up and took a private tour of.
- 0:53KARA: Wow.
- 0:53DANI: That was an option.
- 0:54Now, obviously the private tour is to convince you to join Scientology.
- 0:57KARA: Of course.
- 0:58DANI: And I kind of thought this was dumb with me.
- 1:01I didn't really understand.
- 1:02I thought that we would kind of be given free roam of the museum.
- 1:05And so I brought my camera 'cause I was like, oh this is perfect.
- 1:08The assignment was like to photograph a culture that's like very separate
- 1:12from your own or something,
- 1:13KARA: Uh-huh.
- 1:14DANI: So I was like, perfect, I'm gonna photograph.
- 1:16KARA: You thought you could open like a secret door and then just walk around?
- 1:20DANI: No, I thought that they'd be like, it would be like a museum
- 1:23where they'd be like, and thank you and please enjoy yourself.
- 1:27And then we'd get to just walk around.
- 1:28No but there was a guide with us the entire time.
- 1:33KARA: Well they're hiding people in there.
- 1:34That's why.
- 1:35DANI: Well, I don't think they're hiding anyone in that particular location.
- 1:38'cause that is like the tourist doing, 'cause I've also kind of
- 1:40been in there a lot of times.
- 1:41I'm probably on some list, but I also took a boy that I was dating in high
- 1:46school there one time, but they had like a, a room full of DVDs about
- 1:52Scientology that you could just take.
- 1:54KARA: Right.
- 1:55DANI: Like it was like a BlockBuster level collection.
- 1:58KARA: Okay.
- 1:59DANI: In the back of this building.
- 2:00So like the top floor, you could kind of just walk around.
- 2:03KARA: Right.
- 2:03DANI: Because then I brought the Scientology DVDs home and then me and
- 2:07the boy I was dating watched them.
- 2:08KARA: And was it like, you should join 'cause we were awesome?
- 2:12DANI: It was like more insidious than that.
- 2:14More subtle.
- 2:14It was just like documentaries about like faux science, but like it was real.
- 2:18And actually the worst part was my friend and I, we brought her little cousin
- 2:23who was 16 at the time and we did not prep her beforehand about Scientology.
- 2:28We were just like, oh, we're gonna go to this like kind of silly museum.
- 2:32KARA: Okay.
- 2:32DANI: And then cut to an hour and a half into this three hour private guided tour.
- 2:38KARA: Wow.
- 2:38DANI: Yeah.
- 2:39It was a big commitment.
- 2:40Like it was like this woman was being held hostage clearly.
- 2:43Like you are right that they're keeping people in there, but they're
- 2:45the people working the front desk.
- 2:47KARA: Yes.
- 2:47DANI: She was having us try holding the metal
- 2:51prong things that tell you about your emotions or whatever.
- 2:55And it like makes the machine swing as you answer questions.
- 2:59KARA: It begins with the T. It's like, it's not thesis reader.
- 3:02It's like something reader.
- 3:03DANI: Yeah.
- 3:04KARA: Yeah.
- 3:05DANI: We should Google it, but I don't want to, 'cause I don't wanna like
- 3:07awaken my name on the list again.
- 3:10KARA: The algorithm does not need to know.
- 3:11DANI: Yeah.
- 3:12But she was like, wow, this is really amazing.
- 3:15And then we left and she was like, Scientology's kind of cool guys.
- 3:18And we were like, oh no, they got you.
- 3:21'cause you're 16 and your brain's malleable.
- 3:24KARA: No.
- 3:24DANI: I know.
- 3:25She's okay.
- 3:25I think.
- 3:26KARA: Okay, good.
- 3:26So what did your aura reading have?
- 3:28DANI: Oh yes.
- 3:28My aura reading was like, honestly, she kind of nailed it, but I just don't
- 3:33believe, I just feel like those people are really good at like, first of all,
- 3:37we were at a press event where everyone there was an influencer or a writer.
- 3:41KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 3:42DANI: And so.
- 3:43They could easily deduce.
- 3:46They were like, oh, you're a creative of some kind.
- 3:49KARA: Yeah, no shit.
- 3:50DANI: What kind?
- 3:51And I was like, oh, I'm a writer.
- 3:53And then from there it informs, you know, the way they kind of read it.
- 3:56So they were like, you're working on something right now.
- 3:59Like you're really in your head about it, but you're in the manifestation phase
- 4:03and you're gonna produce it sounds like.
- 4:05And so that was like my orange.
- 4:06I was like really orange.
- 4:07I will say before we took the photos, like way before, DANIelle asked me what
- 4:12colors I thought my aura would be, and I said, people always tell me orange.
- 4:17And she was like, that's so funny.
- 4:19I would've told you yellow, I think.
- 4:20And then, so my colors were orange, yellow like a bluey purple above me and
- 4:26then like a green area in my chest area.
- 4:29But I was wearing green, so I'm like, did the machine just pick up on the fact that
- 4:34I was wearing green and like project it?
- 4:36KARA: That's fascinating.
- 4:37DANI: Honestly, my biggest complaint about the process was.
- 4:40They put them, the hand plates like quite low in the booth,
- 4:43but then they make you stand.
- 4:45I was like, hunched over.
- 4:46KARA: That would've been fine for me.
- 4:47You're just too tall.
- 4:49I saw Death Becomes Her on Tuesday.
- 4:51DANI: Oh my God.
- 4:51How was it?
- 4:52KARA: It was good.
- 4:53DANI: So was my theory right, that you should look up the lyrics ahead of time?
- 4:57Because I could not understand what the fuck they were saying.
- 4:59KARA: So I was like in the back of the orchestra, and the first act, there's
- 5:03an intermission, the first act I hear 10% of everything they're saying.
- 5:08I was like, that's unfortunate.
- 5:10DANI: Yeah.
- 5:10KARA: But I was like, you know what?
- 5:12The dancers are good.
- 5:13The vibes are pretty.
- 5:14I'm sort of catching on to what's happening because.
- 5:17You know, it's very theatrical.
- 5:19It's very acty.
- 5:20So yeah, I'm watching and I'm like, oh, okay.
- 5:22She stole the husband.
- 5:23Great.
- 5:24Okay.
- 5:24She's gonna take the potion.
- 5:25Great.
- 5:26DANI: It's not a hard show to follow.
- 5:28KARA: It's, it's not hard to follow.
- 5:30DANI: It's no Slam Frank.
- 5:31KARA: But then intermission happens.
- 5:33I go get a snack with Leo.
- 5:35Hi Leo, if you're listening.
- 5:36And then in this tiny, tiny little corner, they say, captioning available.
- 5:41And I'm like, so no one, there's nothing at the entrance?
- 5:44So I go talk to this woman.
- 5:45I'm like, hi, I see you have captioning.
- 5:48And she was like, yeah, you have to download the app.
- 5:50It took the full intermission to download this stupid GalaPro app.
- 5:54I hate this app.
- 5:55DANI: Also, don't make people who need captioning have to be
- 5:59on their phones during the show.
- 6:01KARA: Open the app.
- 6:03Download an app, open an account in an old building where there's
- 6:07no wifi because everyone is using their phones at intermission, right?
- 6:11Like there's no data.
- 6:13DANI: Oh my God.
- 6:13KARA: So I was like frantically using my 15 minutes of intermission
- 6:17to download this app and then I had to connect to like the theatre
- 6:21wifi and they gave me a password.
- 6:23I'm doing that.
- 6:24And then the captions worked about 70% of the time.
- 6:29The other 30%, it was either too fast or too slow.
- 6:31Overall.
- 6:32Not my favorite experience.
- 6:34But the show itself was great.
- 6:35Like I would love to see it again with ASL or some other better access.
- 6:42I was so scared to use my phone.
- 6:44This was fine because I was in the back of the orchestra.
- 6:47But Patti LuPone was in like a play of musical a couple years ago.
- 6:50Fairly recent.
- 6:51DANI: Likely place for her to be.
- 6:52KARA: Likely place for her to be.
- 6:53But someone in the front where she could see was using the phone to read captions.
- 6:59And she thought the audience member was just on their phone being stupid
- 7:04and she called them out, stopped the play and called them out.
- 7:07Extremely unprofessional, but then she made herself look so stupid
- 7:11because this person was just reading the captions for this play and that,
- 7:15friends, is my worst nightmare.
- 7:17DANI: Yeah.
- 7:17KARA: I was in row V at the orchestra, so I knew no one was gonna
- 7:21see me, but I was like, what if?
- 7:23I was afraid someone behind me was gonna be like, excuse me, get off the phone.
- 7:27DANI: Right.
- 7:27Well, and the thing is, is like I've said that to people in theaters before, but
- 7:30like what, especially for like ushers and stuff, like I've been to shows
- 7:34where the ushers are really strict.
- 7:36First of all, I think that they need to have real captioning devices,
- 7:40although those don't really work either.
- 7:41So first they need to make a captioning device that works.
- 7:44KARA: Or ASL interpretation at more than one show.
- 7:48I saw Oh Mary with ASL interpretation.
- 7:50I think that's been the only show booked for Oh Mary with ASL interpretation and
- 7:55the show's been on for two years now.
- 7:57DANI: Yeah.
- 7:57KARA: There’s a lot of organizing, to be fair, especially when
- 7:59there's multiple characters, and I'm sure musicals even harder.
- 8:02DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 8:03KARA: Because Oh Mary, they hired four interpreters, I think three
- 8:06or four, and you know, they have to coordinate with the actors and whatnot.
- 8:09But then once do that-
- 8:11DANI: but it seems once you've done that, all that work, then
- 8:12they should make that like,
- 8:13KARA: yeah, you put the same amount of effort in as you would
- 8:16rehearsing to do a Broadway show.
- 8:17DANI: Right.
- 8:17So why not do it for just one night?
- 8:19KARA: All that work.
- 8:20For just one night.
- 8:21DANI: Yeah.
- 8:22KARA: Yeah.
- 8:23I love supporting the theater industry.
- 8:26I just wish they made it a little easier for me.
- 8:28DANI: Absolutely.
- 8:29Also, if you haven't seen a show with ASL interpretation or like a show like
- 8:35Deaf West where it's completely woven in.
- 8:37KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 8:37DANI: To the story.
- 8:38It's amazing.
- 8:39KARA: Yeah.
- 8:39DANI: Highly recommend.
- 8:40KARA: Even if you don't need the ASL interpretation.
- 8:43DANI: No.
- 8:43KARA: If you see, like if you live in New York and you see that like Chicago
- 8:47or something has ASL interpretation, but you don't care about ASL, you
- 8:50should buy the ticket for that day to encourage them to continue doing that.
- 8:54DANI: Okay.
- 8:55Good to know.
- 8:55'cause I so far have been hesitant to do that because in my mind, if
- 8:59it sells out, I don't wanna take a seat from someone who genuinely is
- 9:03not gonna enjoy the show otherwise.
- 9:05KARA: When you sit, it's a very designated area, like in
- 9:08front of the ASL interpreter.
- 9:10DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 9:10KARA: So if you don't need the ASL interpreter, maybe don't get a seat
- 9:13at, I don't know, stage right, row G.
- 9:15DANI: Right.
- 9:15Okay.
- 9:16Got it.
- 9:17KARA: But like if you go get anywhere else and you just support
- 9:20that night, I think that's huge.
- 9:22DANI: Good to know.
- 9:22KARA: Okay.
- 9:23Do you wanna get to the show?
- 9:24DANI: Let's do it.
- 9:38KARA: This is season one, episode 17.
- 9:41Protect Me From What I Want
- 9:42DANI: Okay.
- 9:43I did not Google the painting.
- 9:45KARA: This is Jenny Holzer.
- 9:46This is the very first contemporary art piece that the show has referenced,
- 9:50and this aired February 14th, 2012, Valentine's Day, which is very timely
- 9:55considering what happens in this episode.
- 9:57DANI: Tell me.
- 9:57KARA: Because Bay and Emmett say love you to each other at the end.
- 10:00DANI: I hated that.
- 10:02KARA: We'll get to it.
- 10:02DANI: I hated it.
- 10:03He's being such a baby.
- 10:05KARA: He is being kind of a dick.
- 10:07DANI: Like Bay deserves better, but then also, yeah.
- 10:10Okay.
- 10:10They're like, they're fighting about Ty.
- 10:12KARA: He's gone months ago.
- 10:14Anyway.
- 10:15It’s Jenny Holzer.
- 10:15Do you know who she is?
- 10:16DANI: You keep saying that name.
- 10:18I think I should, but I, I don't in this moment.
- 10:21KARA: She's like a contemporary artist.
- 10:23She's still alive.
- 10:24She did like a lot of public art with the, these truisms or just like random quotes
- 10:30also referenced in this episode because the art gallery guy, Patrick mentions her.
- 10:35DANI: Oh my God.
- 10:36Okay.
- 10:36KARA: So I think that's why they named this episode Protect Me from What I Want.
- 10:40DANI: Okay.
- 10:40I have a question for you that I'm scared to ask and answer.
- 10:44KARA: Please.
- 10:44DANI: Do we think that every single episode has made some subtle, but like
- 10:48also direct reference to the paintings and we're just picking up on them now?
- 10:52Or do you think they just decided to start doing this?
- 10:54KARA: I think they just decided to start doing this.
- 10:57DANI: I'm getting increasingly nervous that we've just missed the first 15.
- 11:01Obviously in the first episode it's, This is Not a Pipe.
- 11:04KARA: Right.
- 11:04They reference-
- 11:04DANI: and they're very, they're very direct about that.
- 11:06KARA: Expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
- 11:08They never directly reference the art piece or the artist.
- 11:12We just know that Angelo was expelled.
- 11:14DANI: That's true.
- 11:15I do think Bay makes some kind of comment like, you think he's the devil.
- 11:19I don't wanna-
- 11:19KARA: So what if he’s the devil?
- 11:20DANI: Exactly.
- 11:21KARA: At least the devil has a job.
- 11:23DANI: I need you to watch that episode now.
- 11:25KARA: I will.
- 11:25Okay.
- 11:26Well we start off with Buckner.
- 11:28This coach is once again in the girls' locker room.
- 11:31DANI: Yeah.
- 11:31Why?
- 11:32KARA: This male coach?
- 11:33I hate him.
- 11:34He sucks in this episode and just in general.
- 11:36He sucks, but he's like, by the way, basketball playoffs are coming
- 11:41up and you girls are going to do scrimmages against one another.
- 11:45And Daphne is going to be going for small forward.
- 11:49And Simone is gonna be going for point guard.
- 11:52That's all we need to know right now.
- 11:53DANI: Okay.
- 11:54Thank you for handling that.
- 11:55When it got to all the basketball stuff I said
- 11:57KARA: Yeah, I was like,
- 11:57DANI: KARA’s got it.
- 11:58KARA: I got you.
- 11:59I got you.
- 11:59DANI: I did write down Daphne saying nobody's better at posting up than she is.
- 12:04That really got me.
- 12:05KARA: I had to remind myself what posting up is .Basically you just,
- 12:09so you dribble the ball, okay, and you go to the basket, right?
- 12:13And then posting up is just going to one side of the basket and you just like have
- 12:17your feet spread and you're trying to be firm on your feet and then go on your feet
- 12:24and get the ball on the hoop, basically.
- 12:26DANI: And they needed to hire a private coach to teach Daphne how to do that?
- 12:30KARA: It does take some skill.
- 12:31It takes a lot of footwork.
- 12:32DANI: Okay.
- 12:32KARA: Small forwards also have to do a lot of rebounds.
- 12:35Rebound just means getting the ball in case it doesn't go in the hoop.
- 12:40You have to get it and then throw it back in the hoop.
- 12:42Hopefully.
- 12:43That's the goal.
- 12:44DANI: Wow.
- 12:44I'm learning so much.
- 12:45KARA: Yeah.
- 12:46Anyway, we're at the Kennish house now.
- 12:48DANI: And Emmett's back.
- 12:49KARA: Emmett's back, eating them out house and home.
- 12:52DANI: He's a growing boy.
- 12:53KARA: He's got like a whole basket of grapes and cheese
- 12:56and crackers and whatnot.
- 12:57DANI: Basically charcuterie.
- 12:58KARA: Yeah.
- 12:58He's eating just like a glorified charcuterie board, except
- 13:01everything's straight from the fridge.
- 13:03DANI: Deconstructed.
- 13:04KARA: Deconstructed charcuterie board.
- 13:05And Bay apologizes to him for yelling at him about his dad and he's like, whatever.
- 13:11This is... Another point.
- 13:12He's in a good mood.
- 13:13'cause he has his emotional support food.
- 13:15DANI: Yes.
- 13:15Oh my God.
- 13:16Emmett's always much happier when he is eating.
- 13:18KARA: Yeah.
- 13:19Also probably 'cause his father is not feeding him.
- 13:21DANI: Yes.
- 13:22Because Bay then says.
- 13:23KARA: Like they don't feed you at home.
- 13:24Either he has to cook for himself or he is just getting him takeout or something.
- 13:28DANI: We know Emmett is not cooking for himself.
- 13:29KARA: No, but the poor guy is hungry and he's a growing boy.
- 13:32Kathryn comes into the kitchen, she is thrilled to see him.
- 13:36And she's like, let me whip you up an actual dinner.
- 13:38Some rosemary garlic chicken, which sounds really good.
- 13:41DANI: That does sound nice.
- 13:42KARA: She says it only takes for 15 minutes, which sounds really fast to me.
- 13:45DANI: Yeah.
- 13:45That,
- 13:46KARA: but I also never cook chicken.
- 13:48DANI: Do we think Kathryn Kennish is a good cook?
- 13:50KARA: Yes.
- 13:51DANI: Think about-
- 13:52KARA: Chili?
- 13:52Maybe not the
- 13:53DANI: cultural context.
- 13:54KARA: I think she's good at like white people cooking.
- 13:57DANI: Okay.
- 13:58KARA: Rosemary and garlic are pretty, I think they can
- 14:00afford nice, fresh ingredients.
- 14:02So they use like a lot of fresh herbs and whatnot.
- 14:04DANI: Yeah.
- 14:05KARA: Like fancy, organic, free range chicken.
- 14:09DANI: Yeah.
- 14:10KARA: And I think she's also Italian and she did mention her grandmother
- 14:13is from Italy and the Italians are notoriously pretty good at cooking.
- 14:18The fact that rosemary and garlic are going together, with this meal though,
- 14:23tells me that this might be pretty good.
- 14:25DANI: I mean, I think Emmett's gonna think it's delicious regardless.
- 14:28KARA: He's starving.
- 14:29DANI: He's starving.
- 14:30I'm just thinking about like how excited all the Kenne are when Daphne cooks now.
- 14:35KARA: Oh my God.
- 14:36That's right.
- 14:36DANI: So I guess it's my running theory.
- 14:40It's like, you don't care about the A Court of Thorns and Roses series?
- 14:44KARA: I never read it.
- 14:45DANI: Within the fandom, there's a running bit because the main character is like a
- 14:49painter, and that's like a huge arc for her is that she like, doesn't paint when
- 14:54she's in a bad place and then she starts painting again when she's in a good place.
- 14:58Anyway, the way that these paintings are described implies that she
- 15:02is not actually a good painter.
- 15:05KARA: I love that.
- 15:05DANI: It's a running bit in the fandom that she, everyone's just like pretending
- 15:08for her to support her journey.
- 15:11And that's kind of how I feel about Kathryn Kennish's cooking.
- 15:14KARA: Going back to the rosemary garlic chicken, Kathryn is signing up a storm.
- 15:18DANI: Yeah.
- 15:19KARA: It's not that great, but she's trying.
- 15:21I really liked when she signed school like a crocodile.
- 15:24DANI: She's very stiff.
- 15:25She's a very stiff signer.
- 15:27KARA: But she's trying.
- 15:28DANI: Yeah.
- 15:28It's something that is true, I believe, to the actress because it remains
- 15:33true throughout the whole show.
- 15:34KARA: Yeah.
- 15:35Kathryn is signing to Emmett asking how's life?
- 15:38And then he's like good, taking classes.
- 15:40I'm taking a photography class at school right now and one of my assignments
- 15:44is, I actually have to take a family portrait pic, but I can't do my own
- 15:48family 'cause they're killing each other.
- 15:50So Kathryn's like, well, what if you took a family portrait of us?
- 15:55And Bay is acting like
- 15:57DANI: this is the
- 15:57KARA: worst idea in the idea in the world.
- 15:59But I think it's a sweet idea.
- 16:01DANI: Yeah.
- 16:01And he also says, yeah, he can't use his family and it's sad.
- 16:04And.
- 16:05KARA: Yeah, he starts miming like choking.
- 16:07And killing.
- 16:08DANI: And Bay's like, I didn't realize it was that bad.
- 16:10KARA: Yeah.
- 16:11He doesn't go into details, but it just seems like Cameron and Melody
- 16:14had a very tumultuous relationship.
- 16:16DANI: Yeah.
- 16:17But Bay is really against this, and Kathryn says it's either this or we
- 16:22could invite him to Sound of Music Night.
- 16:24KARA: And he could be Kurt.
- 16:25DANI: Okay.
- 16:25Is Kurt the one that becomes a Nazi?
- 16:25PAUSE. BOTH LAUGH.
- 16:31KARA: I'm Googling.
- 16:32DANI: The one in you are 16 going on 17, which by the way, now when
- 16:37hearing that song, concerning.
- 16:40KARA: Why?
- 16:40DANI: Innocent as a rose.
- 16:43KARA: Ew.
- 16:43DANI: And he's older.
- 16:44It's weird.
- 16:45KARA: Kurt's the youngest boy.
- 16:47DANI: Okay.
- 16:48So no.
- 16:49If he's a child, a Von Trapp child, then no.
- 16:51KARA: Kurt is 10, but almost 11.
- 16:53The youngest boy, Kurt, is sensitive and pretends not to
- 16:56be hurt by his father's absence.
- 16:58DANI: Guys, Kurt does not become a Nazi.
- 17:00KARA: Well.
- 17:00DANI: No.
- 17:01'cause they all flee.
- 17:02KARA: Well, it's Liesl.
- 17:03Who's the daughter.
- 17:04DANI: Yeah.
- 17:04KARA: Who's the one that be-
- 17:05DANI: The boy.
- 17:06Which she's seeing.
- 17:07KARA: Oh, Ralph Gruber.
- 17:08DANI: Oh yeah, that's a Nazi name.
- 17:10KARA: Yeah.
- 17:10DANI: Yeah.
- 17:11Tough.
- 17:12KARA: Anyway, okay, next scene.
- 17:13Regina's at the hair salon wearing purple yet again.
- 17:16DANI: Yeah, I guess she's still working at Geraldo's even after.
- 17:19KARA: Yeah.
- 17:20DANI: I guess he never caught wind, that she fully signed
- 17:22a lease and opened a salon.
- 17:24KARA: Well, maybe she said, by the way, the salon didn't
- 17:26work out and he said slay.
- 17:28DANI: And he, and he hired her back.
- 17:29I don't, I feel like he.
- 17:30KARA: But he never fired her.
- 17:31DANI: Yeah, but I. Yeah, you're right.
- 17:33I don't know.
- 17:34Whatever.
- 17:35It happened off screen.
- 17:36KARA: It happened off screen.
- 17:37Anyways, she has a client, she's doing his hair.
- 17:39His name is Patrick and he's a gallery owner and he sounds like he
- 17:43just moved to Kansas City and he is hunting around for some artist to show.
- 17:47Regina being a supportive mom for once, it's like, well, what if he
- 17:50looked at my daughter Bay’s art?
- 17:52She's very talented and cool.
- 17:53DANI: Yeah, it was crazy even to hear her refer to Bay as her daughter.
- 17:57KARA: I know.
- 17:58DANI: I feel like we have not gotten this side of Regina's.
- 18:02KARA: At all.
- 18:02DANI: Motherhood as as of yet, so yeah, it was crazy.
- 18:06KARA: It was.
- 18:07DANI: And she shows him the mural that I guess they fixed
- 18:10and guys, it's still ugly.
- 18:13KARA: And he goes, it’s got some like Chicano socialist vibes.
- 18:16DANI: Yeah, I guess I don't know enough about that specific art period to
- 18:20comment if that's true, but to me it was giving like steam punk birthday card.
- 18:25KARA: Ooh.
- 18:25Yeah.
- 18:26DANI: So, or like, you know, those crayon paintings that people made in the 2010s?
- 18:32KARA: Like the melting?
- 18:33Yeah.
- 18:33DANI: Yeah.
- 18:33Where you like take the hair dryer and you melt it.
- 18:35Oh my God.
- 18:35Wait,
- 18:36KARA: I had, I did that.
- 18:37DANI: I had to tell you.
- 18:38KARA: Tell me.
- 18:38DANI: Sorry guys and I don't think I'm gonna cut this.
- 18:41I knew a woman when I was a teenager who was an artist who was
- 18:46like a very LA pretentious like, husband was in the film industry.
- 18:51She was like, we're well connected.
- 18:54I'm having a gallery show.
- 18:55You have to come.
- 18:56And this was after knowing her for like a year, hearing about her art,
- 19:00hearing about her being an artist.
- 19:02So we go to the gallery show and it is wall to wall.
- 19:06Those crayon art paintings.
- 19:08KARA: No.
- 19:09DANI: Yes.
- 19:09All like preserved in resin like portraits of like tigers with melted crayon and
- 19:17like sparkly like art that would be inside of a bad Vegas hotel off Strip.
- 19:23KARA: I love that.
- 19:24DANI: And I just had to be like completely straight faced about it.
- 19:28So every time I see crayon art, I think of her.
- 19:30KARA: Every time I think of art galleries and how weird
- 19:32they are, I think of Fleabag.
- 19:35Fleabag's stepmom who has that gallery.
- 19:38DANI: That was kind of the vibe of this crayon artist lady.
- 19:42KARA: Yeah.
- 19:43Oh my God.
- 19:43I gotta rewatch Fleabag.
- 19:45Such a good show.
- 19:45DANI: Yeah.
- 19:45So good.
- 19:46Anyway guys, so I felt like the mural was.
- 19:51KARA: It does look like that.
- 19:52DANI: A disappointment.
- 19:53KARA: I remember distinctly hot gluing crayons to a white piece of
- 19:59cardboard and then hair drying it and then drawing some shit over it.
- 20:03DANI: Yeah.
- 20:04KARA: Wow.
- 20:04Yeah.
- 20:05DANI: Rite of passage.
- 20:05KARA: And then she like drew a cog.
- 20:07DANI: Yeah.
- 20:08KARA: Yeah.
- 20:08That's her mural, guys.
- 20:10Okay.
- 20:10Now we're back at the Kennish House and we're in the kitchen
- 20:13with John and Kathryn and Toby.
- 20:15And Kathryn is interviewing Toby about the switch for her book.
- 20:19DANI: Well, she's trying to.
- 20:20KARA: Trying.
- 20:21DANI: I think that she's going about this really wrong.
- 20:25KARA: How so?
- 20:25DANI: If I were Toby, I would not wanna open up to my mom
- 20:29about this, especially not in our kitchen with my dad listening in.
- 20:33KARA: Yeah, that's true.
- 20:34DANI: And she's like, how do you feel about the switch?
- 20:36Like that's her question.
- 20:38Like I feel like if she wants-
- 20:39KARA: very open-ended.
- 20:40DANI: Very open-ended.
- 20:41I feel like if she wants real intimate answers, she should let him like
- 20:46record voice memo responses to the questions and like promise him she's
- 20:50not, because then he says like, oh, it's been nice 'cause I've kind
- 20:53of gotten to fly under the radar.
- 20:55KARA: But I think.
- 20:55DANI: And they're immediately like, no, we'll do, we'll spend more time with you.
- 20:59We'll pay more attention to you.
- 21:00And it's like you're not giving him a safe space to say how he feels without you
- 21:04guys like turning into parents about it.
- 21:05KARA: Yeah.
- 21:06No offense to Kathryn.
- 21:07I think this was a bad interview.
- 21:08DANI: Yes.
- 21:08KARA: I think she really should have gotten into the nitty gritty,
- 21:11like the second you found out.
- 21:13DANI: Yes.
- 21:13KARA: Bay's blood test reveal that she wasn't related.
- 21:16How did you feel?
- 21:17DANI: Right.
- 21:17Like write out detailed questions and then let him answer them
- 21:21in voice memos on his own time.
- 21:23And then listen to them later.
- 21:24I feel like that's the only way he's gonna be like open
- 21:27and honest about how he feels.
- 21:29KARA: I also like in the scene that John opens the fridge and he
- 21:31says, where did all the food go?
- 21:32Yeah,
- 21:33DANI: he's hungry.
- 21:34He's mad.
- 21:35KARA: Yeah.
- 21:36DANI: They say, we'll spend more time with you.
- 21:37Like, what do you wanna do?
- 21:38Do you wanna go skeet shooting?
- 21:40KARA: Yes.
- 21:40DANI: And Toby's like, no.
- 21:42And then he leaves and then John goes, I think it was Bay
- 21:44that was into skeet shooting.
- 21:45There is no way Bay was the one that was into skeet shooting.
- 21:48KARA: Is skeet shooting the same as clay shooting?
- 21:51Like you throw that thing in the air and then you shoot it?
- 21:53DANI: I think so.
- 21:54KARA: Okay.
- 21:54I've done it once.
- 21:55DANI: Was it fun?
- 21:56KARA: Yeah, I was really good at it.
- 21:58DANI: Oh my God.
- 21:58Are you a good shot?
- 21:59KARA: I am.
- 22:00Someone who doesn't like guns.
- 22:02I was so good at it.
- 22:03As Regina says later too.
- 22:05DANI: She says, but I'm a pretty good shot.
- 22:06KARA: Yeah.
- 22:07DANI: Maybe it was Bay then.
- 22:08Who knows?
- 22:09KARA: Yeah, maybe it's genetic.
- 22:10DANI: Maybe.
- 22:10KARA: Okay.
- 22:11DANI: Now we're in the guest house.
- 22:12KARA: Yes.
- 22:13In Daphne's bedroom.
- 22:14Simone's there
- 22:16DANI: and she, the scene opens with Daphne going, I look like a ho.
- 22:20KARA: She's wearing a very normal looking purple dress.
- 22:23DANI: Very normal.
- 22:23Looks great on her.
- 22:25KARA: And her hair's just like a little wavy.
- 22:27DANI: Yeah.
- 22:27KARA: They put some curls in.
- 22:28DANI: Yeah.
- 22:29She looks not like a second grader for maybe the first time.
- 22:33KARA: She looks like she's going to a cousin's bar mitzvah.
- 22:35That's the look.
- 22:36DANI: You're right.
- 22:37God.
- 22:37Daphne's such a prude.
- 22:39KARA: I was like, I wore that to go to the many bar mitzvahs I did in
- 22:42my hometown like a strapless dress that went right above the knee.
- 22:47DANI: It goes to the knee.
- 22:47Yeah.
- 22:47It's like it basically goes to the knee.
- 22:49KARA: Yeah.
- 22:50She looks great, honestly.
- 22:52And purple's a nice color on her.
- 22:53DANI: Yeah.
- 22:53And Simone says, I don't know why you're always hiding your arms and your legs.
- 22:58Like, you look great.
- 22:59KARA: And Simone says what we were all thinking, which is, you need to
- 23:02stop with the stripes and the oranges.
- 23:04DANI: I guess I just wanted to take this moment, as much as I hate her.
- 23:08And I'm only gonna hate her more as this episode goes on.
- 23:10Last episode, we did beg the universe beg somebody to save Daphne
- 23:16from the orange and the stripes.
- 23:17And Simone stepped up.
- 23:19KARA: Simone stepped up.
- 23:20Thank you.
- 23:21Although Daphne does wear stripes again in this episode.
- 23:24DANI: Yes.
- 23:24It's her like returning to her self.
- 23:26KARA: To her roots.
- 23:28Then Regina comes into the bedroom, meets Simone, and she
- 23:31is freaked out by this dress.
- 23:32She's like, oh.
- 23:33DANI: Yeah.
- 23:34Why?
- 23:35KARA: I don't know.
- 23:35DANI: Why is everyone trying to dress Daphne like a toddler?
- 23:39KARA: I don't know.
- 23:40DANI: Because Kathryn is buying her these clothes.
- 23:42I know she likes them.
- 23:44I guess no one's, no one's reacting to Bay wearing, like
- 23:48Bay loves like a booby lacy top.
- 23:51KARA: Yeah.
- 23:51Why can't Daphne?
- 23:52DANI: Why can't Daphne do that?
- 23:53KARA: That's just not Daphne's style.
- 23:55And maybe Regina's just genuinely surprised to see her showing some skin.
- 23:59DANI: It felt slut shame-y.
- 24:00I don't know.
- 24:00KARA: It did feel very slut shame-y.
- 24:02But Simone.
- 24:02DANI: But from Regina, that's like surprising.
- 24:04So maybe you're right.
- 24:05KARA: I, I did not like it.
- 24:07It's a very uncomfortable scene.
- 24:08And Simone is being a little too overly friendly, I think for
- 24:12someone who's meeting a friend's parent for the first time.
- 24:15DANI: She's like trying a little hard.
- 24:17KARA: Yeah.
- 24:17She's being a bit TMI.
- 24:19And she's like, she has an amazing body, like your body, Regina.
- 24:23I would die to have your boobs.
- 24:24DANI: Yeah.
- 24:25It's a bit much.
- 24:26KARA: I would never be commenting on my friend's mother's boobs ever, personally.
- 24:31And then she's like, thank you for the invite to dinner, but I have to
- 24:33go get my vagina waxed basically.
- 24:35DANI: A lot of details.
- 24:37KARA: Again, it's too much.
- 24:38And then she leaves and Regina signs.
- 24:41This is the first time they are not simcomming.
- 24:44And that's because Simone is probably still in the apartment,
- 24:47like putting on her shoes to leave.
- 24:48DANI: Yeah, I wrote it down too.
- 24:49I was like, this is huge.
- 24:50This is proof that they don't have to be doing what they're doing.
- 24:53KARA: They really do not have to be simcomming guys.
- 24:55DANI: And you know what?
- 24:55The scene was more engaging without them fucking talking.
- 24:58KARA: It was awesome.
- 24:59But Regina signs, are all private school girls like that?
- 25:03But then the captions say, are all Buckner girls like that?
- 25:06Interesting note.
- 25:07I wonder if there's a sign name for Buckner, considering that
- 25:10Daphne goes there all the time now.
- 25:11DANI: I know.
- 25:12I feel like there should be.
- 25:13KARA: I think there should be a sign name for Buckner.
- 25:15Like there is for Carlton, but Carlton is school for the Deaf.
- 25:17But whatever.
- 25:18Next scene, Kathryn is showing old family portraits to Emmett, including
- 25:23a very insensitive portrait where Bay and Toby are dressed as Native Americans
- 25:27and John and Kathryn are cowboys.
- 25:29DANI: Oh my God.
- 25:29I did not catch that.
- 25:30I was trying to pause it for each family portrait, but I did not see that.
- 25:34KARA: Oh yeah, it's quite insensitive.
- 25:36There was a pirate one that's pretty cute though.
- 25:37DANI: The pirate one's cute.
- 25:38KARA: And they said they did that 'cause Toby like fell
- 25:40and got scratches on his face.
- 25:42So they all did that to match.
- 25:43DANI: Sweet.
- 25:44KARA: That was sweet.
- 25:45DANI: A family I grew up with.
- 25:47For their like family photo, one year they got a dog that had like a circle
- 25:51around his eye and so for their family photo with the dog, they all put
- 25:55like dark circles around their eyes.
- 25:57KARA: It's cheesy, but it's cute.
- 25:58DANI: It's cute.
- 25:59KARA: And Emmett is loving this, you know?
- 26:01He misses having a family, so he's adoring these photos.
- 26:04DANI: Yeah.
- 26:05KARA: Kathryn is doing this thing though that drives me crazy, is
- 26:08that every time Emmett signs, she's interpreting it out loud.
- 26:11DANI: Yeah.
- 26:12KARA: This is what Bay did when she first started learning sign.
- 26:15DANI: I think it's probably the director's way of showing that Kathryn's still
- 26:19like struggling to learn and understand.
- 26:22KARA: I know, and I. I guess they have to show it out loud, but it's annoying.
- 26:25It's so annoying.
- 26:26Kathryn asks him like, have you ever dated a hearing girl before?
- 26:30Well, she says, can I ask you some very personal questions?
- 26:33Have you ever dated a hearing girl before.
- 26:35And then Emmett signs no.
- 26:36And then she out loud says, no.
- 26:39We know!
- 26:40DANI: We know.
- 26:40KARA: We know what he's saying guys.
- 26:42And then she asks him if he's ever dated Daphne, and he is like, no.
- 26:45DANI: And so he's really polite about correcting.
- 26:48She signs date with F's.
- 26:50KARA: He corrects it and she's like, oh, thank you.
- 26:51DANI: Yeah.
- 26:52KARA: And then Kathryn's like, well, I'm glad you're dating Bay
- 26:55because I never liked her ex Ty.
- 26:58And Emmett's like, you can see he's feigning recognition.
- 27:01He's like, oh yeah, Ty.
- 27:02Yeah, I know.
- 27:03DANI: But he did.
- 27:03Did he just forget?
- 27:04'cause he totally acts like he doesn't remember that they dated.
- 27:07But he does know.
- 27:08KARA: I don't think he realized how serious they were.
- 27:10But even then they weren't serious.
- 27:12DANI: No.
- 27:13KARA: Bay later says they weren't even together a month.
- 27:15DANI: Well, we're gonna get there.
- 27:16'cause that really threw off my timeline.
- 27:18KARA: Yeah.
- 27:19And then Kathryn's like, I was relieved when he left to fight in a needless war.
- 27:23DANI: That's my problematic queen.
- 27:26KARA: Basically.
- 27:26And she was so sad and heartbroken when Ty left.
- 27:29But then you came along and then Emmett is very, kind of weirded out by this.
- 27:34DANI: Yeah.
- 27:34He seems very upset.
- 27:37KARA: And he will be upset and a little brat for the rest of the episode.
- 27:41DANI: So then he goes out and he finds Bay, who is going through
- 27:44her past work because Regina has told her about this gallery guy.
- 27:47KARA: Yes.
- 27:48DANI: And I'm sorry, I just like don't have a lot of patience
- 27:52for Bay about her art right now.
- 27:55Like she's annoying about, like, her being like, should I, this one speaks
- 27:58for itself, but this one I could talk a lot about like blah, blah.
- 28:02KARA: But also maybe they don't want that.
- 28:04DANI: Yeah.
- 28:04KARA: And then Emmett is not in the mood and he's like, they're all good.
- 28:07DANI: I wasn't either.
- 28:08He does say something shitty though.
- 28:09KARA: Well, she says, she says, I'm so excited she,
- 28:13she's getting ahead of herself.
- 28:14I think also maybe Regina should've warn her.
- 28:17We don't see Regina telling Bay the gallery owner's coming.
- 28:20DANI: Yeah.
- 28:21KARA: And Bay, because Bay seems to get her hopes up and she's like, oh
- 28:23my God, he could be showing my art.
- 28:26So she's like, there could be an opening with reviews and Emmett goes,
- 28:29well, sometimes reviews are bad.
- 28:31It's so mean.
- 28:32And then.
- 28:33DANI: Communicate!
- 28:34KARA: And then Bay even says, what's up?
- 28:36And he, he's like, nothing.
- 28:38I gotta go.
- 28:38DANI: He loves to be like nothing.
- 28:42KARA: Brooding.
- 28:42Bitchy face.
- 28:43DANI: He loves to walk out of a situation.
- 28:45KARA: Literally.
- 28:46DANI: And then next scene, Daphne shows up to a random basketball court and she's
- 28:51like, oh my god, Simone, you texted me.
- 28:53It seemed urgent.
- 28:54What's going on?
- 28:55And Simone has hired, is this a real person?
- 28:58KARA: No.
- 28:58DANI: Okay.
- 28:59KARA: I Googled it.
- 28:59DANI: Thank you.
- 29:00Simone has hired Lottie McComb, a fictional basketball player to coach them.
- 29:05KARA: Yeah.
- 29:06She's the basketball coach for UMKC.
- 29:08DANI: Yeah.
- 29:09And maybe played in the WNBA or no, maybe played for Stanford?
- 29:12KARA: She used to play for Stanford.
- 29:14DANI: Okay.
- 29:14Just a random lady.
- 29:15She doesn't even get lines.
- 29:16KARA: Yeah.
- 29:17Daphne says, that's amazing.
- 29:19Thank you, but I can't afford this.
- 29:21And Simone goes, don't worry.
- 29:23Because remember the watch, I thought that was stolen?
- 29:25I found it in my jacket, but then my dad already bought me a new one, so
- 29:29I just decided to sell it and that's why I can afford these lessons.
- 29:32And Daphne is like, well, we should tell the coach because everyone thinks Monica
- 29:38and the East Riverside girls stole it.
- 29:40And Simone's like, nah, don't worry about it.
- 29:42This is gonna come up again later.
- 29:43DANI: Should we just jump ahead to it?
- 29:45The next scene with Daphne and Simone, they're at Buckner having lunch, I guess.
- 29:49Again, I don't know why Daphne's always here and yeah.
- 29:52KARA: I don't know.
- 29:52DANI: Monica approaches them and Daphne's like, what are you doing here, girly?
- 29:57Actually it doesn't-
- 29:58KARA: I don't know why Monica's there.
- 30:00DANI: I guess she came to tell Daphne.
- 30:02Because she's hoping Daphne can do something?
- 30:05KARA: Yeah.
- 30:05'cause she's like, we are now banned from practicing at the gym because of
- 30:09the accusations that we stole the watch.
- 30:11DANI: Yeah.
- 30:12KARA: And Daphne's about to say, well, oh, don't worry, the watch wasn't stolen.
- 30:16But Simone has given her evil eyes.
- 30:18Yeah.
- 30:18Like, shut up.
- 30:19Simone does not give a fuck.
- 30:21DANI: And then Monica's basically like, don't worry about it.
- 30:23It's not your fault.
- 30:25KARA: Yeah.
- 30:25DANI: And she like walks away and then Daphne turns to Simone and is
- 30:29like, okay, we have to say something.
- 30:31And Simone's basically just like, no, we don't.
- 30:34KARA: She genuinely scared me in this scene, honestly.
- 30:37DANI: Yeah.
- 30:37She's scary.
- 30:38She's evil.
- 30:40KARA: Okay, let's rewind now.
- 30:41Oh yeah.
- 30:42There's this like B side plot with John and Toby trying to bond.
- 30:47DANI: Oh yeah.
- 30:48KARA: So John goes to Toby in his music room and to try and get them to bond, he
- 30:53invites them to like a charity baseball hit fest where they basically just.
- 30:57DANI: Just hit baseballs.
- 30:58KARA: Hit baseballs.
- 30:59Hit baseballs.
- 30:59DANI: Baseball is so boring, you guys.
- 31:01KARA: It's fun to hit though.
- 31:02DANI: To watch a guy hit for like two hours at this charity event.
- 31:06Why?
- 31:07KARA: But it's to save the puppies.
- 31:08DANI: So he's like, come on.
- 31:10And Toby's like, I have to practice.
- 31:12KARA: And John is very dismissive of this.
- 31:14Yeah.
- 31:15He's like, who cares?
- 31:16We have to save the puppies and play baseball.
- 31:18And Toby's said, fine.
- 31:19Okay.
- 31:20DANI: Can I, here's my hot take.
- 31:22KARA: What?
- 31:22DANI: I, John's basically gonna go on a journey of accepting that
- 31:25Toby's music ambitions are valid and real and supporting his career.
- 31:30KARA: Yes.
- 31:31DANI: Right through this episode.
- 31:32I think it's perfectly fine for him to be, to not think that his random
- 31:38privileged son from Mission Hills is going to become like a, a rock star.
- 31:44KARA: Sure.
- 31:44DANI: I think it's okay.
- 31:46I don't know.
- 31:46Toby's like, you don't support me dad.
- 31:49He did build him a music studio in the garage.
- 31:52KARA: Yes.
- 31:52But then Toby later says like, did you not think this was serious because you
- 31:57gave me a garage so I could build a music studio and I practice every day.
- 32:01DANI: I don't know.
- 32:01I think it's important to remember who the Kennishes are.
- 32:04Also, he sold a bunch of his fancy amps that they bought him
- 32:07to pay off his gambling debts.
- 32:08Like he is just a teenage boy.
- 32:10I don't know.
- 32:11I think if I was John, I also would be like, that's nice, honey.
- 32:14Good for you.
- 32:15KARA: Fair.
- 32:15Yeah.
- 32:16That's fair.
- 32:16DANI: Like it's just him and Wilke in this band.
- 32:18Like Wilke's not a serious person.
- 32:20KARA: No he's not.
- 32:21DANI: I'm happy they get to the place they get to where he's more supportive.
- 32:24KARA: But I was gonna say, baseball isn't that serious either, but I guess
- 32:27it's different when your father was in the industry and made career out of it.
- 32:31DANI: I mean, yeah, he says later like, the reason I feel like
- 32:33sports is a more realistic path for you is because I can help you.
- 32:38KARA: Yeah, nepo baby.
- 32:39Which is fine.
- 32:39DANI: And Toby's like, I don't need help.
- 32:41First of all, Toby, you do.
- 32:42You let your rich parents build you a giant studio and buy you every single
- 32:46amp in the world, and then you let your girlfriend get you a bunch of gigs.
- 32:49So you do need help.
- 32:51KARA: Yeah.
- 32:51DANI: You are just like a 17-year-old rich boy.
- 32:54KARA: It's fine to have help.
- 32:55DANI: It's fine.
- 32:57KARA: Yeah.
- 32:57DANI: But I think it's also fine for John to be like, okay, I don't think
- 33:01you're gonna be the next John Mayer.
- 33:03KARA: Yeah.
- 33:03DANI: I don't know what, what is he writing about?
- 33:05KARA: I just don't know if he needs to say that to Toby.
- 33:07DANI: No, but he doesn't say that.
- 33:09He just does says like, I don't know, man.
- 33:11I thought it was just like a hobby, whatever.
- 33:14KARA: Do you know who is making meaningful art though?
- 33:16DANI: Bay kind of, although we have to look at the man painting again.
- 33:19KARA: Yeah.
- 33:20Bay is showing her artwork to the gallery owner Patrick, and
- 33:23he seems very disinterested.
- 33:25He's like, that's nice honey.
- 33:26She shows in the man portrait and he says this is kind of a twist on Jenny Holzer.
- 33:31Reference to the title of the episode, guys.
- 33:33He does not give a shit though.
- 33:35I think he's just doing this to get close to Regina.
- 33:37DANI: Yeah, it's a bummer scene 'cause she's like
- 33:40KARA: so excited.
- 33:40DANI: Really trying, excited to show off Bay's work and he's
- 33:43definitely just hitting on her.
- 33:45KARA: Bay is so excited.
- 33:46But then Regina is like, do you like my daughter’s art, and then he's
- 33:48like, do you wanna go on the date?
- 33:50DANI: He said, I wanna try Kansas City Barbecue.
- 33:52Which so do I. I think it's pretty red meat forward.
- 33:54KARA: So I, well the name of the place is Alabama Al's.
- 33:57So maybe it's not Kansas City Barbecue.
- 33:59It's Alabama.
- 34:00DANI: No, KC's just weird like that I think.
- 34:02KARA: Okay.
- 34:02It's hit fest time.
- 34:04DANI: Oh yeah.
- 34:04KARA: John is
- 34:06DANI: hot.
- 34:07KARA: He starts, yeah, he's hot.
- 34:08He starts batting and his age is showing, 'cause he misses
- 34:11like the first two swings.
- 34:12DANI: I didn't even clock that.
- 34:13I was like, wow, he looks sexy.
- 34:15KARA: Yeah.
- 34:15But then he starts hitting those balls outta the park.
- 34:18Great job.
- 34:19And then Toby comes up and it's very Ryan Evans from High School Musical 2
- 34:23DANI: Yes.
- 34:23Step up to the plate and start swinging.
- 34:26Oh my God.
- 34:27And he’s so good.
- 34:28KARA: He is, home runs.
- 34:29DANI: Yeah.
- 34:30He's hitting all of 'em.
- 34:31KARA: Yeah.
- 34:31Everyone is in awe, including John.
- 34:33I'm gonna actually wrap this plot up.
- 34:35John and Toby then come home from the hit fest.
- 34:38And John is like, you hit every ball at the park.
- 34:41Why are you wasting your talent?
- 34:43You are so good.
- 34:45DANI: Yeah.
- 34:45KARA: Also, baseball is more than just being able to hit a ball out of the park.
- 34:48You need to be able to do a lot of other things.
- 34:50But.
- 34:50DANI: That's true.
- 34:51KARA: But Toby's like, well, I quit because you, there
- 34:54was so much pressure on me.
- 34:56DANI: Yeah.
- 34:56KARA: To be a good baseball player like my father.
- 34:59DANI: Understandable.
- 34:59KARA: Very understandable.
- 35:01But then John tells him like, you threw that away for nothing.
- 35:04DANI: And Toby's like, not for nothing.
- 35:05I have my music career,
- 35:07KARA: God, dad.
- 35:08DANI: You see what I mean though?
- 35:09I'm a little.
- 35:10KARA: I know.
- 35:10It's like, it's such the stereotypical like coming of age plot.
- 35:15DANI: Yeah.
- 35:15KARA: It's not my dream, dad.
- 35:17It's yours.
- 35:18DANI: Yeah.
- 35:18It's literally Troy Bolton.
- 35:20KARA: Yeah.
- 35:22DANI: Troy Bolton in this universe.
- 35:23Wow.
- 35:23KARA: High School Musical parallels.
- 35:25DANI: Oh my God.
- 35:26KARA: And then.
- 35:27DANI: He just wants to sing.
- 35:29KARA: But then later after they do like the family photo shoot.
- 35:31John approaches Toby.
- 35:33Yeah.
- 35:33And he's like, he comes to a realization.
- 35:35DANI: And this is really sweet, that he says like.
- 35:37KARA: I want tickets.
- 35:38DANI: I, I want, I, I got tickets to the event you're playing.
- 35:41I'm wondering if you can get us floor passes and Toby's, like,
- 35:44it's not that kind of show.
- 35:46And John's like, oh, I didn't know.
- 35:47And he like, looks kind of embarrassed.
- 35:49And then he is like, I just want to be able to help you and I
- 35:52don't have any connections in this world, so I can't help you.
- 35:55And that's when Toby says, I don't need your help.
- 35:57And I'm like, that's my issue that I have.
- 35:59It's, he should have just said like, it's okay dad.
- 36:02Like you've helped me enough.
- 36:03You helped me financially beyond what most of the population would get.
- 36:08KARA: I know.
- 36:08And then at the end, Toby strums on his guitar in the musical montage while
- 36:12John looks from afar in the admiration.
- 36:15DANI: Yeah.
- 36:15That's nice.
- 36:15KARA: So that's kind of the end of that plot.
- 36:17DANI: Yeah.
- 36:17That's the end of that plot.
- 36:18KARA: Okay.
- 36:19DANI: Wrapped it up.
- 36:19Patrick comes back to take Regina out on a date.
- 36:23Regina basically agrees to go on the date.
- 36:25KARA: Is it the same day?
- 36:27DANI: It's unclear if it's the same day.
- 36:28But what's kind of shady to me is that he doesn't say how
- 36:32he feels about Bay's artwork.
- 36:34Until.
- 36:35KARA: They're like, they're about to go out.
- 36:36DANI: Yeah.
- 36:37And like he waits until she says yes to the date.
- 36:39I feel that Regina only said yes to the date.
- 36:42KARA: To like.
- 36:42DANI: To hopefully encourage him to like, you know what I mean?
- 36:46KARA: I get it
- 36:47. DANI: Kind of felt like a quid pro quo moment.
- 36:49Like,
- 36:49KARA: I know.
- 36:50And it doesn't work.
- 36:51DANI: So, and it doesn't work.
- 36:52And so he comes upstairs and then Adrianna shows up?
- 36:55KARA: Yes.
- 36:56DANI: And does what Regina did to Bay, to Regina basically, and is like, oh,
- 37:02well you need to look at Regina's work.
- 37:03KARA: And Patrick says, she paints too?
- 37:05DANI: Because Regina didn't mention it.
- 37:07And she picks up this one piece in particular that is kind of giving
- 37:11Phoebe Bridger's album cover.
- 37:13KARA: That's exactly what I wrote down.
- 37:15DANI: Yeah,
- 37:15KARA: Dani.
- 37:16DANI: Like the colors are exact.
- 37:18KARA: It's like dark blue ombre to red.
- 37:21DANI: Yeah.
- 37:21I'm gonna look it up, actually.
- 37:23I'll post it on the Instagram guys for reference.
- 37:25We'll do a slide by slide comparison.
- 37:27KARA: That is exactly what I wrote down.
- 37:29DANI: It's a cool piece.
- 37:31KARA: And then Regina later is gonna say like it's a piece about her sobriety and
- 37:34that the broken glass are liquor bottles.
- 37:36DANI: Yes.
- 37:37And okay.
- 37:38I'm being such a hater with this episode and like all the art that
- 37:41these characters are making, and I know it's hard to write good art.
- 37:44I know that that famously is a thing that it's hard when someone's an
- 37:48artist in a show or movie to then show the art, is like very difficult.
- 37:53That being said, Patrick, I think he just wants to sleep with her.
- 37:56He keeps pushing, like your voice is so unique.
- 38:00He's like, I want someone who has something unique to say and
- 38:02the thing he's talking about is that Regina is an alcoholic.
- 38:06KARA: I think Bay being switched at birth is quite unique.
- 38:09DANI: I agree.
- 38:10I don't know why.
- 38:11I don't think they tell Patrick that though.
- 38:13KARA: They don't.
- 38:13But that's a great kind of story.
- 38:15DANI: You need to sell that angle.
- 38:17KARA: I was like, no offense.
- 38:18Lots of artists are alcoholics.
- 38:20DANI: Well, that was my thought process when he was like, it's just so unique.
- 38:23I'm like, I do not think Regina is the first or the last person
- 38:27to repurpose broken glass from alcohol bottles into their art.
- 38:32It's a cool piece.
- 38:32KARA: I don't know.
- 38:33I don't know.
- 38:34It's subjective, but I was just like, I don't know that
- 38:36one's being shown in a gallery.
- 38:39DANI: The amount of emphasis that is put on how unique it is and how unique her
- 38:43voice is, is just like very silly to me.
- 38:46KARA: Anyways.
- 38:47Also, Patrick steps out when Adriana comes in.
- 38:49Yeah, and Adrianna and Regina make amends.
- 38:51They apologize to each other and she decides to move back in.
- 38:54DANI: Adrianna says, I may have overstepped.
- 38:56KARA: Maybe.
- 38:58DANI: Maybe just a little.
- 38:59KARA: Yeah, sorry about that.
- 39:00Then after the scary Simone scene, Bay is in the library and Daphne
- 39:06approaches, she's wearing stripes again, blue and gray stripes, and then
- 39:10Daphne's like, can you please tell me what happened between you and Simone?
- 39:15DANI: And can I call out?
- 39:16Bay is now pretty proficient in sign language.
- 39:20I would say.
- 39:21KARA: Yes.
- 39:22DANI: They are in the library surrounded by people that could
- 39:25eavesdrop on them speaking.
- 39:27And they are simcomming.
- 39:28KARA: I know.
- 39:29And it's quite a sensitive story.
- 39:31DANI: It's a sensitive story involving people.
- 39:33KARA: Who used to go to that school.
- 39:35DANI: Yeah.
- 39:35People at that school would know.
- 39:37And they're in a library, so no one else is speaking.
- 39:40KARA: I know.
- 39:40DANI: Just pipe down, just shut it.
- 39:44Like you don't.
- 39:45KARA: Do you wanna share the story Bay shares?
- 39:47DANI: Oh, it's so sad.
- 39:48Okay, so basically Bay and Simone were evil eighth graders.
- 39:54KARA: Yes.
- 39:55DANI: And there was this weird girl at school that everyone made fun of.
- 39:59KARA: Named Alicia.
- 40:00DANI: And her skirt was too long.
- 40:02And she had these, like.
- 40:04KARA: She had barrettes.
- 40:04DANI: Barrettes in her hair, whatever.
- 40:06Sounds kind of cute.
- 40:07And Simone convinced Bay that they should give her a makeover.
- 40:12KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 40:13DANI: And she really wanted to be friends with them.
- 40:15She was just like desperate to have friends.
- 40:17So they invited her over and then they convinced her to tell them who she had a
- 40:23crush on, and then convinced her that she should practice asking him out on camera.
- 40:29And then after she left, Bay was like, we need to delete this.
- 40:32Like this is humiliating.
- 40:34And suddenly she had a conscience and Simone instead sent it
- 40:39around to the whole school.
- 40:41KARA: It sounds like she posted it on YouTube or something.
- 40:43DANI: Yeah.
- 40:43And then it went from school to school.
- 40:45KARA: And then Alicia dropped out.
- 40:47She left the school.
- 40:48DANI: She, yeah.
- 40:49And maybe moved out of town completely.
- 40:51KARA: Yeah.
- 40:52And Bay, you can tell she still feels immense guilt about it.
- 40:55DANI: Yeah.
- 40:55She says like, I feel sick about it every day.
- 40:57And basically just that her and Simone weren't really friends after that.
- 41:02KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 41:02DANI: But also she doesn't imply that it was like a big falling out.
- 41:06KARA: It just seems like Bay was taking a step back.
- 41:07DANI: Yeah.
- 41:07And then she says, Simone is not someone you want as an enemy, but
- 41:12you also don't want her as a friend.
- 41:14KARA: Yes.
- 41:15Yeah.
- 41:15That story was quite upsetting.
- 41:17DANI: A couple of things.
- 41:18How does Toby not know about this?
- 41:20KARA: Yeah, he must have seen the video.
- 41:22Maybe he didn't like associate with Bay and Simone.
- 41:25DANI: Yeah.
- 41:25Maybe he didn't know.
- 41:26KARA: They don't know who posted it.
- 41:27DANI: Posted it and stuff, but like clearly Bay's
- 41:31parents don't know about this.
- 41:33KARA: No.
- 41:33DANI: I just am intrigued also by the fact that, what are
- 41:36they, sophomores or juniors?
- 41:38They must be sophomores.
- 41:40KARA: They're 16.
- 41:40Yeah.
- 41:41I don't know.
- 41:41DANI: So probably sophomore.
- 41:42KARA: Are they, when do they start applying to colleges?
- 41:44Next, next season or was it the season after?
- 41:47DANI: Well, I think, I don't know.
- 41:49KARA: Let's say sophomores.
- 41:49DANI: Let's say sophomores.
- 41:50'cause maybe Toby's a junior or senior.
- 41:52KARA: Yeah.
- 41:52DANI: So this happened what, two years ago?
- 41:55KARA: Recent?
- 41:55Yeah.
- 41:56DANI: God, that's crazy that there's only two years between
- 41:58eighth grade and sophomore year.
- 42:00KARA: A lot can happen.
- 42:01DANI: That means for the last two years Bay has been lying about continuing to
- 42:05be friends with Simone to her parents.
- 42:07KARA: Yes.
- 42:08DANI: Because she still uses Simone as an excuse all the time.
- 42:10KARA: To sneak out of the house and do street art.
- 42:12DANI: So John and Kathryn haven't seen Simone in two years.
- 42:15KARA: That's true.
- 42:16They must be like such absent parents from the eighties.
- 42:19DANI: I guess so.
- 42:20KARA: That was such like a mean girl story.
- 42:23It like-
- 42:23DANI: I
- 42:23KARA: know.
- 42:24broke
- 42:24DANI: my heart.
- 42:25And also like I know in eighth grade people are different and I know she
- 42:28feels bad about it, but like Bay, you shouldn't have gone along with that.
- 42:32KARA: Yeah.
- 42:32At least it, there did come a point where she was like, we have to stop.
- 42:36DANI: Yeah.
- 42:36But anyway, Simone is evil.
- 42:38KARA: Yeah.
- 42:38Simone is confirmed evil.
- 42:40We hate her.
- 42:41Okay.
- 42:42Regina and Patrick are on their barbecue date at Alabama Al’s.
- 42:46Regina then at the scene asks his opinion on Bay's work.
- 42:50And he's like, she's good I guess, she's talented for age, but she
- 42:54just needs more time and experience.
- 42:56But he's like, I loved your Phoebe Bridgers' Punisher painting though.
- 43:01Obsessed with the Punisher painting.
- 43:02DANI: Obsessed.
- 43:03KARA: And Regina shares that, oh, it's about my sobriety.
- 43:06And he goes, perfect.
- 43:08You went through something and that shows in your art.
- 43:10And then, like I said before, I wrote like Bay also went through something
- 43:14even more unique than alcoholism.
- 43:17Not to trivialize the struggles of being an alcoholic.
- 43:21DANI: No.
- 43:21But like Bay's man portrait is, is about her missing biological father.
- 43:28KARA: Because she was switched at birth.
- 43:30DANI: I think they're not marketing her well enough.
- 43:32KARA: No.
- 43:33DANI: She needs like an agent.
- 43:34KARA: She needs an agent that's not Regina.
- 43:36But anyways, Patrick's like, love your Punisher art, I want it in my next show.
- 43:40Then next scene Bay comes to Regina and she's like, oh my God, how'd it go?
- 43:44What did Patrick say about my art?
- 43:45What's the feedback?
- 43:46And Regina's like, so sorry, but he is not gonna be showing your work.
- 43:51And Bay seems to have really gotten her hopes up here.
- 43:53She is heartbroken.
- 43:55DANI: She's so upset.
- 43:56I, What happened here?
- 43:58KARA: Like something's missing.
- 43:59'cause I'm wondering, did Regina say like a gallery owner is coming and he's
- 44:04looking to show art and that art could be yours or, but I think she should
- 44:09have framed it as a gallery owner is coming and I thought it'd be good for
- 44:14him to look and give you feedback.
- 44:16DANI: Yeah.
- 44:17KARA: But that doesn't seem to be how she framed it.
- 44:19DANI: He also doesn't give her feedback though.
- 44:22KARA: No, not at all.
- 44:23He doesn't give her anything.
- 44:24DANI: No.
- 44:25KARA: But we also don't know what Regina told Bay.
- 44:27DANI: No, but let's just jump ahead because then later in the episode,
- 44:31Kathryn yells at Regina basically.
- 44:34KARA: Yes.
- 44:35DANI: About exposing Bay to this kind of criticism.
- 44:38And she basically says, we should be lifting her up, not,
- 44:41you know, not flattening her.
- 44:44And Regina says like, what do you think the world is gonna be like?
- 44:48KARA: Yeah.
- 44:48Feedback is good for an artist.
- 44:49DANI: For a young artist, like she's going to get criticism.
- 44:53And she should learn to deal with that now.
- 44:56And so I think this is also evidence of like Regina, assuming that Bay can
- 45:00handle it, but Bay has grown up literally in a bubble, much like, this calls back
- 45:06to me saying like, Toby's music career isn't serious 'cause he isn't fucking
- 45:10like taking risks or doing things beyond like playing his mom's fundraiser.
- 45:17KARA: Right.
- 45:18DANI: Which is not like, that does not make your band real because
- 45:21your mom books you for a fundraiser.
- 45:23KARA: Right.
- 45:23DANI: And that's sort of his vibe.
- 45:25And Bay has her street art, but that's like private and no one's critiquing
- 45:29that really, you know, it's not, it's, she's not hearing the feedback there
- 45:33because it's like a different form.
- 45:35KARA: But she's also not hearing the feedback from Patrick.
- 45:37DANI: No, she's not.
- 45:38But, and so it's just the, the sting of rejection.
- 45:41KARA: Yes.
- 45:41DANI: But like it is, Regina's, right that she needs to get used to being rejected
- 45:46'cause she's about to be in the arts.
- 45:47And that's hard.
- 45:48And Kathryn is like, no.
- 45:50Like she doesn't need to be exposed to that.
- 45:52Yes, she does.
- 45:53She does.
- 45:53Clearly she does because she has a full blown meltdown about the fact that
- 45:58this guy doesn't wanna show her work.
- 46:01KARA: And then Regina says, I'm proud of her for showing her, showing her art.
- 46:04Like it must've been scary and she got rejected.
- 46:06And that's gonna happen.
- 46:07Yeah.
- 46:07DANI: That's gonna happen.
- 46:08So, yeah.
- 46:10But I think this does push Kathryn, because Kathryn is, has been struggling
- 46:14with her book this whole episode.
- 46:15KARA: Yes.
- 46:16DANI: And she is going to end the episode by finally allowing
- 46:19John to read her book proposal.
- 46:21KARA: Yes.
- 46:21DANI: And for a minute there, she was like, maybe no one will read this book
- 46:24proposal and I'll just keep it to myself.
- 46:26KARA: Yeah.
- 46:27She was saying, maybe I'll never publish it.
- 46:28I’ll just let Sarah Lazar do it.
- 46:30DANI: Yeah.
- 46:30But I think that Regina being like, no, the world is scary and you have
- 46:33to just do it anyway really pushes her to be like, okay, I'm scared
- 46:37of rejection too, but I will do it.
- 46:39KARA: Thank you, Regina.
- 46:40DANI: Yeah.
- 46:41KARA: Yeah.
- 46:41Point for Regina in that scene.
- 46:43DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 46:43KARA: I agree with everything she said.
- 46:44DANI: And then Kathryn's response to her is, please don't, they're,
- 46:47they're doing laundry for reference.
- 46:49And she goes, please don't use those kinds of dryer sheets.
- 46:50They ruin the machine.
- 46:52KARA: Yeah.
- 46:52She can't think of a good comeback.
- 46:54So she’s like, pick different dryer sheets, please.
- 46:56And she says it so feebly.
- 46:57Okay, next scene.
- 46:58Daphne's at Buckner.
- 47:00And she goes to the coach who we hate to tell him, by the way, the watch was found.
- 47:04But Simone has beat her to the punch 'cause the coach is like.
- 47:08DANI: This is so evil.
- 47:09KARA: Oh, I knew about this 'cause Simone told me that selling
- 47:13the watch was both your idea.
- 47:15And using that money to hire a basketball coach was both your idea.
- 47:19And she's trying to defend herself and he will not let her get a word in edgewise.
- 47:24I hate him.
- 47:26DANI: So she finally snaps.
- 47:27KARA: He goes, I put you on this team for a reason.
- 47:29DANI: And she said, you put me on this team so you could get
- 47:32the money because I am deaf.
- 47:34KARA: And then silence.
- 47:36DANI: And then he says, okay, we should start clean.
- 47:38We should start fresh.
- 47:39KARA: I was so proud of her for saying that.
- 47:41DANI: Yeah.
- 47:41Finally.
- 47:42KARA: Standing up for herself.
- 47:43She said, you don't give a shit about me, actually.
- 47:46DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 47:46KARA: And you suck.
- 47:47And then he's like.
- 47:48DANI: Yeah, fair.
- 47:48KARA: Yeah.
- 47:49And then he is like, fine, we're gonna do a new round of tryouts.
- 47:51You're gonna go against Simone for point guard.
- 47:53DANI: This is so petty.
- 47:55KARA: Yeah.
- 47:55That was crazy.
- 47:56DANI: He has no reason to do that except to be like, fuck you.
- 47:59KARA: I hate this coach.
- 48:00Fire him.
- 48:01DANI: Yeah.
- 48:01Why is he playing with teenage girls' lives like this?
- 48:04KARA: Why is he going in the locker room and messing up their lives?
- 48:07DANI: Why is he feeding the drama?
- 48:08KARA: I don't know.
- 48:09Fuck this guy.
- 48:10Emmett comes to see Bay, and Bay again is having a crash out.
- 48:14DANI: Bay is crashing out.
- 48:15She's making a new piece of Axe Girl art that she says she's going to put
- 48:19up across the street from this guy's gallery as like a fuck you to him.
- 48:23I thought that she was no longer going to be doing, she not like a projection,
- 48:27she's going to spray paint it up.
- 48:30KARA: Yes.
- 48:30DANI: I thought that she learned from Emmett.
- 48:32Emmett's situation to not do this anymore.
- 48:35KARA: I think she's gonna continue doing it, but then she stupidly invites him.
- 48:39DANI: Yeah.
- 48:40KARA: And then he's like, no, I got arrested and I lost my motorcycle.
- 48:44Why would I do that?
- 48:45DANI: What he says, 'cause he's pissed at her.
- 48:48So first they fight about Ty.
- 48:49KARA: Yes.
- 48:49DANI: And he's like, I thought it wasn't that serious.
- 48:52And she was like, it wasn't, it was only for like a month.
- 48:55KARA: Yes.
- 48:56Okay.
- 48:56And she says, I didn't sleep with him.
- 48:57I'm still a vegetable.
- 48:59The vegetable reference comes up again.
- 49:00DANI: And he's like really bothered by it still.
- 49:03Whatever.
- 49:04I don't really understand why.
- 49:05Kathryn, all she said was like, Bay was heartbroken.
- 49:08And Bay says to Emmett, you knew that I was still into him when you kissed me.
- 49:12KARA: Yeah.
- 49:13DANI: Because we literally, like our whole friendship foundation was built on the
- 49:17fact that she was upset over Ty leaving.
- 49:19KARA: Yeah.
- 49:20All Kathryn said was, I like you and you make my daughter happy.
- 49:23DANI: Yeah.
- 49:23And that she seemed heartbroken when Ty left, which like
- 49:25a mom doesn't always know.
- 49:27Like Kathryn could be wrong too.
- 49:29Like Kathryn could be, I mean, she wasn't in this instance, but like
- 49:32it's frustrating that Emmett takes her word over Bay's and so then he's
- 49:37like, whatever, I'll get over it.
- 49:39And she's like, okay, do you wanna come with me to put up this piece?
- 49:41And he goes, your street art already cost me my motorcycle.
- 49:45So no.
- 49:47Which is fucked up to say to her.
- 49:49I thought we decided, collectively as a show society, that
- 49:54Emmett's choices were his own.
- 49:56KARA: Yes.
- 49:57DANI: Mostly.
- 49:57KARA: For the most part, yes.
- 49:58DANI: For the most part.
- 49:59Bay played a part, but it's fucked up of him to throw that in her face, even
- 50:02though I think what she's doing is stupid.
- 50:04KARA: And I think she should not invite him.
- 50:06DANI: No, and I think she shouldn't invite him.
- 50:08I don't think you need to say no 'cause you already cost me my motorcycle.
- 50:11KARA: It also drove me crazy when Bay is trying to explain himself about Ty
- 50:15and he just looks at her and goes, okay.
- 50:16I hate when I'm arguing.
- 50:18DANI: He pissed me off.
- 50:19KARA: I hate when I'm trying to talk to someone and they
- 50:22just give me one word answers.
- 50:23Okay.
- 50:24Fine.
- 50:25It makes me so mad.
- 50:26And then he leaves again.
- 50:27DANI: And then he fucking leaves again.
- 50:28Like, why were you even there?
- 50:29KARA: I think also the running plot in this too, is that he's
- 50:33very unhappy living with his dad.
- 50:35DANI: Yes.
- 50:36KARA: He's not really expressing that, but you see hints of it like he's hungry.
- 50:39His parents are never there.
- 50:41He even says in the scene like Cameron and Olivia are never home.
- 50:44DANI: Yeah.
- 50:44She says, how did you get away.
- 50:47KARA: And he said, well they’re never home, so.
- 50:48DANI: They're not even there.
- 50:49KARA: Yeah.
- 50:50So I, he's missing a family.
- 50:53And he's also, he also has that resentment, I think.
- 50:56But Emmett, stop it.
- 50:59DANI: It's pissing me off.
- 51:00KARA: Pissing me off.
- 51:01Okay, now we're back at Buckner and Simone confronts Daphne about them going
- 51:06up against each other for point guard.
- 51:08And she goes, after all I've done for you, like hiring that basketball coach.
- 51:13DANI: Girl, fuck you.
- 51:14And she's, she's like, you knew you couldn't post up.
- 51:17You were worried about posting up.
- 51:18So now you're taking my spot.
- 51:20KARA: Well, she's really afraid of Daphne beating her, 'cause she
- 51:22knows Daphne's better than her.
- 51:24DANI: Daphne's better at basketball.
- 51:25KARA: Yeah.
- 51:26DANI: And then she, she starts fucking making comments about Daphne being deaf.
- 51:30KARA: Well, Daphne's, like you told the coach that selling
- 51:33the watch was also my idea.
- 51:35And then Simone goes, well, you probably misunderstood.
- 51:38He doesn't move his lips a lot when he speaks.
- 51:40I wanted to push her off a cliff.
- 51:42DANI: I would’ve thrown hands.
- 51:44KARA: I had someone say that to me once in high school.
- 51:46We were playing tennis together and the fight was about something else.
- 51:50But then she was like, well, maybe you didn't hear.
- 51:53And I was like, don't use that against me.
- 51:55DANI: Oh my God.
- 51:56KARA: I was furious for a week after.
- 51:58DANI: Do you remember what the fight was about?
- 51:59KARA: I played varsity tennis.
- 52:01And what happened was, for every game someone had to
- 52:04bring food to feed the team.
- 52:05And apparently it was my turn, but I wasn't aware of that.
- 52:08I was supposed to do it for one game, but then the game was postponed or
- 52:11canceled because of rain or whatever.
- 52:13And then this game comes up and this girl comes up to me and
- 52:17she's like, where's the food?
- 52:18And I was like, I was not aware of that.
- 52:20I was supposed to feed the team, but I'll go get pizza right now.
- 52:23And she's like, no, it's too late.
- 52:24Everyone's gonna be hungry and play poorly because of you.
- 52:27And then I was like, it does not say in the schedule with my name on it.
- 52:30Like, no one texted me prior.
- 52:32'Cause usually that was like, she was the captain, so she was supposed
- 52:35to text and be like, by the way, bring sandwiches or pizza tomorrow.
- 52:38DANI: Okay.
- 52:38So what I'm hearing is it was her fault.
- 52:40KARA: And then she was like, well, I mentioned it last
- 52:43week, so maybe you didn't hear.
- 52:45DANI: Girl.
- 52:46KARA: And I was like,
- 52:46DANI: so she was trying.
- 52:47KARA: Fuck you.
- 52:48DANI: Yeah.
- 52:48Trying to cover for the fact that she forgot to text you.
- 52:51KARA: Yes.
- 52:52I think that's what happened.
- 52:53DANI: I'm sorry.
- 52:54KARA: Yeah, I was furious.
- 52:56And then I had to call my poor mother to come outta the office and
- 52:59like frantically buy sandwiches.
- 53:01So the team did get fed.
- 53:03Just a little later than usual, but whatever.
- 53:05DANI: They survived.
- 53:06KARA: They survived.
- 53:07Anyway, Bay tags the wall.
- 53:09DANI: Bay tags the wall.
- 53:10KARA: She's back in the art studio.
- 53:11And Patrick comes in to give her something from a Jenny Holzer exhibit that he.
- 53:16Like the catalog and Bay not so subtly is like, is your gallery on this street?
- 53:22Because I saw this really cool piece of street art across the
- 53:26street, and he's like, yeah.
- 53:28DANI: Thought I left the Banksy wannabes back in New York.
- 53:31KARA: Ouch.
- 53:32DANI: He's not a fan.
- 53:33And so then maybe for Bay, I would hope that that would tell her like, okay,
- 53:38this guy's not gonna like the kind of stuff that I really wanna do anyway.
- 53:41KARA: Yeah.
- 53:42But instead she keeps pushing it.
- 53:44Well, then he goes back to Regina and he is like, again, I need your Phoebe
- 53:49Bridgers Punisher piece in my show.
- 53:51DANI: He needs it.
- 53:52KARA: And Regina's like thank you, but if I do, it's going to hurt Bay's feelings.
- 53:57He's like, why would you both not do it instead of only have one of you do it?
- 54:01Like what?
- 54:01DANI: Yeah.
- 54:02KARA: How does that benefit either of you to not have your piece in there?
- 54:05And then Regina's like, Hmm, putting myself out there.
- 54:08DANI: Interesting.
- 54:09KARA: This episode's all about putting yourself out there.
- 54:11Now it's b-ball time.
- 54:13DANI: I just wrote, not a basketball show down.
- 54:15And then I honestly tuned out 'cause I knew.
- 54:18KARA: Well, Simone has the ball and she says to Daphne, do you want me to
- 54:21tell you when he blows the whistle?
- 54:23I'm gonna throw this basketball in her face.
- 54:25DANI: But Daphne responds so cunty, she goes, no.
- 54:29'cause he'll blow it again when I score on you.
- 54:31KARA: Yeah.
- 54:31DANI: Pretty good.
- 54:32Pretty good back talk.
- 54:33KARA: She kicks her ass.
- 54:34DANI: Yeah.
- 54:35KARA: So Daphne gets the position, yay.
- 54:37Then Regina goes up to Bay in her bedroom and she confesses.
- 54:42Patrick is gonna be putting a piece of my work in the show.
- 54:45DANI: Yeah.
- 54:46KARA: And Bay immediately.
- 54:48DANI: Bay feels so betrayed.
- 54:49KARA: Betrayed.
- 54:50She accuses Regina of moving on from Angelo so fast.
- 54:54Fair.
- 54:54He just left.
- 54:55DANI: Totally fair.
- 54:56Regina's response is he left us again.
- 54:59No, he didn't.
- 55:01KARA: I'm wondering.
- 55:01DANI: I'm pretty sure he was deported.
- 55:03KARA: Do we?
- 55:04DANI: No, we don't know.
- 55:04KARA: We don't know.
- 55:05'cause I was like, did she just drop to the audience that he left again because
- 55:10he was confronted about being a fugitive.
- 55:12He got scared and left?
- 55:13DANI: She said that man walked out on us again and I'm like,
- 55:17I don't think he walked out.
- 55:18I think he was dragged out.
- 55:20Genuinely.
- 55:21KARA: Right.
- 55:21DANI: Like, unless she's has some secret knowledge that we don't have.
- 55:25KARA: I know.
- 55:26DANI: Honestly, I think Regina is still jealous over learning that he had a
- 55:31fiance in Italy like two years ago.
- 55:34KARA: Right.
- 55:34So she's like, I'm gonna go out and date this gallery owner.
- 55:36DANI: Yeah, I think she, Angelo does not bring out the best in her.
- 55:41KARA: No.
- 55:42DANI: So, yeah.
- 55:43And then as they're fighting, Kathryn walks in and is like, hey guys,
- 55:47it's time for the family portrait.
- 55:49This is so funny.
- 55:49'cause Kathryn can hear them.
- 55:51She's not deaf.
- 55:52She can hear them fighting.
- 55:54KARA: Yeah.
- 55:54DANI: Like if they wanted to do that bit, they should have sent Daphne.
- 55:57But Kathryn fully knows that they're fighting and just is like portrait?
- 56:01It's time.
- 56:02KARA: It's time.
- 56:03Emmett's set up the camera.
- 56:04DANI: Also I like that they chose to do this scene in complete silence.
- 56:08KARA: Yes.
- 56:08It's through Emmett's point of view.
- 56:09DANI: Yeah.
- 56:10KARA: Yeah.
- 56:10Emmett's taking a lot of candids.
- 56:12Kind of weird, but a lot of nice portraits do come out of it.
- 56:15DANI: You know that I don't love Emmett's photography style.
- 56:18KARA: I know, I know.
- 56:20But yeah, they do it from his point of view.
- 56:22So there's no audio, but you can see like the yearning in his face
- 56:26that he misses and wants a family.
- 56:28I also wanted to note that because there's no sound, you can see like the
- 56:33growing closeness of the family unit.
- 56:35DANI: Yeah.
- 56:36KARA: It was cool.
- 56:36DANI: It's really nice.
- 56:37And then after the photo, Daphne tells John that she got the slot on the team.
- 56:42KARA: He's like, yay.
- 56:42Then Bay approaches Emmett as he's cleaning up the camera equipment, but
- 56:47he leaves the room without a word again.
- 56:50DANI: What?
- 56:50He's being so emo like.
- 56:52I would be so embarrassed if my boyfriend was acting this way
- 56:54. KARA: In front of my family.
- 56:56I know.
- 56:56And then she's like, did something happen?
- 56:58I'm sorry if my family's embarrassing.
- 57:00And he's like, stop.
- 57:01Your family is amazing, and I would be lucky to have a family like that.
- 57:05And then he goes, my parents fell out of love with each other.
- 57:09Are we gonna fall out of love?
- 57:11DANI: The first thing I wrote was, well, yes, because you
- 57:13are 16, but then second, aw.
- 57:16KARA: And Bay goes, did you just say love?
- 57:18Wait, let me, let me focus on your feelings.
- 57:20DANI: Yeah.
- 57:21And he was like, no, what?
- 57:22And she was like, well, you said fall out of love.
- 57:25KARA: So does that mean you're in love?
- 57:27DANI: Yeah.
- 57:27KARA: With me?
- 57:28DANI: And he says like, yes, I am.
- 57:30Okay.
- 57:31This, he's been acting like such a bitch this whole episode.
- 57:35KARA: I know.
- 57:36DANI: I, it's frustrating that this is the moment that he chooses
- 57:39to then be like, and I love you.
- 57:41KARA: And then she says it back and it's
- 57:44DANI: the big L.
- 57:45KARA: I know the big L. Don't drop the big L right now.
- 57:48DANI: He dropped the big L.
- 57:49KARA: He dropped the Big L, but I, it just didn't seem warranted.
- 57:52DANI: No, it also feels too soon.
- 57:55KARA: No one expressed any love for each other in the scene or even
- 57:58the past few episodes actually.
- 58:00DANI: Yeah, they've been fighting for two episodes.
- 58:03They didn't really resolve the fighting in this episode.
- 58:06Well, whatever.
- 58:07They're teenagers.
- 58:08KARA: Yeah.
- 58:08DANI: So yeah, he drops the big L and then we get a montage to play us out of
- 58:13this episode, which is, I think a first.
- 58:16KARA: Yes.
- 58:16We get a little music montage.
- 58:17So we have Kathryn giving John her book proposal.
- 58:20DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 58:21KARA: I thought it was the actual book, and I was like,
- 58:23why is it only two pages long?
- 58:25And then I realized that, wait, it's the book proposal.
- 58:27Okay.
- 58:28Regina opens the phone and realized she has a missed call from Angelo.
- 58:31DANI: Huge.
- 58:32KARA: Toby strums his guitar, and John looks from afar, wistfully,
- 58:35and with admiration in his eyes.
- 58:37That he didn't have before.
- 58:38it's a new kind of admiration.
- 58:40Emmett is looking through the family portrait pics that he just
- 58:42took and then he texts his mom.
- 58:44DANI: Yeah.
- 58:45KARA: That I really liked.
- 58:46DANI: I liked that too.
- 58:47But the text was so formal.
- 58:49Hi mom, how are you?
- 58:51KARA: That's how I text my mom.
- 58:52DANI: Is that how you text your mom?
- 58:53KARA: I think so.
- 58:54DANI: Oh.
- 58:54That is not how I'm texting my mom.
- 58:56KARA: My mom loves emojis though, so I think I'll throw an emoji in.
- 58:59DANI: That would feel better.
- 59:00I think that would soften it.
- 59:02KARA: Yeah.
- 59:03My mom every morning goes Good morning.
- 59:05And then she does the chickens emojis.
- 59:07DANI: She texts you every morning?
- 59:09KARA: Every morning.
- 59:09DANI: That is so sweet.
- 59:11KARA: In the family group chat.
- 59:12Oh, and then the last part of the montage is Simone walks past Daphne at
- 59:16Buckner and gives her the evil eyes.
- 59:18So I feel that she's gonna have some kind of revenge in store for Daphne.
- 59:22DANI: And she's maybe walking with other basketball teammates.
- 59:26So the implication is like, that the rest of the team is
- 59:29also gonna be mad at her now.
- 59:31KARA: Oh man.
- 59:32Not looking forward to that.
- 59:33DANI: No, and that's the end of the episode guys.
- 59:35KARA: Daphne should push Simone off a cliff.
- 59:37That'd be a fun twist.
- 59:39DANI: I feel like if she revealed now that Simone was the one that
- 59:43uploaded that video, like in high school, that's not a cool thing to do.
- 59:47Like I understand middle schoolers are evil, but in high school,
- 59:50if you're revealed to be an evil person, I feel like people take note.
- 59:53KARA: Yeah.
- 59:53They'd be like, that's actually really fucking mean.
- 59:55What the hell?
- 59:56Yeah.
- 59:56Especially now I would say like.
- 59:58DANI: Even back then though, like I feel like by high school, people
- 1:00:01were like, we don't bully people.
- 1:00:03That's fucking weird.
- 1:00:03That what I mean, like why would just ignore them if you don't like them?
- 1:00:07KARA: I think I was gonna say though, especially now where we know the power
- 1:00:11and the permanency of the internet.
- 1:00:13DANI: Yeah.
- 1:00:14KARA: Now that's like extremely uncool, I would say.
- 1:00:18DANI: I just cannot believe that no one said anything to Toby.
- 1:00:21Like I know Bay said something to Toby.
- 1:00:24KARA: Toby doesn't know.
- 1:00:25He's just like they're ex friends.
- 1:00:27DANI: Yeah.
- 1:00:27The fact that Bay hasn't been like, no, she did this really evil thing.
- 1:00:31Like you need to be careful.
- 1:00:33KARA: I don't know if I would tell my brother.
- 1:00:34DANI: I fucking would.
- 1:00:35KARA: I don't have an older brother.
- 1:00:36I don't have any older siblings though.
- 1:00:38So the relationship is different.
- 1:00:39DANI: That's true.
- 1:00:40Yeah.
- 1:00:40If someone wronged me and then my brother started dating them, I'd be like, hello?
- 1:00:44KARA: Oh, that's right.
- 1:00:44I forget they're dating.
- 1:00:45DANI: Yeah.
- 1:00:46KARA: We don't see Toby and Simone interact all this episode.
- 1:00:49DANI: No, but they just agreed that they're back together.
- 1:00:52KARA: Right.
- 1:00:53Yeah, that's true.
- 1:00:54I would say, I don't know.
- 1:00:55I don't think who you are now is your reflection of who you are at
- 1:00:5814, but it might be good to warn her, especially since she's still a bitch
- 1:01:02now and a bitch to his sister Daphne.
- 1:01:05Fun episode.
- 1:01:06DANI: Fun episode.
- 1:01:08A lot of basketball.
- 1:01:09KARA: I'm so sorry you had to go through that.
- 1:01:11DANI: It's okay.
- 1:01:11I'll survive.
- 1:01:12KARA: Well, thank you for listening.
- 1:01:13DANI: Thanks for listening, guys.
- 1:01:15KARA: We'll see you next week.
- 1:01:16DANI: See you next week.
- 1:01:17Bye.
