Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Best of 2025: Ryan Bridge - My prediction for the 2026 election
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Like it or not, next year's big dance and politics
- 0:03Speaker 1: will ultimately be decided by the few, not the many.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Most MMP elections have been the minnows hold the keys
- 0:09Speaker 1: to the kingdom. Be it Winston with what will it
- 0:11Speaker 1: be as best result ever potentially or to party Maldi
- 0:14Speaker 1: with the overhand. Getting the left in twenty twenty six
- 0:17Speaker 1: won't be a twenty twenty landslide. The difference this time
- 0:22Speaker 1: is how extreme some of those smaller parties, or more
- 0:25Speaker 1: to the point, some of their MPs have become. Think
- 0:27Speaker 1: Takuta on Indians, think Simon Court on Palestine. It's not
- 0:32Speaker 1: just rhetoric though, but policy too. A separate Maldi parliament,
- 0:36Speaker 1: renationalizing power companies, says Uncle Shane, you name it, they'll
- 0:40Speaker 1: go there. The temptation for the behemoths, the broad churches,
- 0:44Speaker 1: the big lots is to emulate what's getting traction, To
- 0:48Speaker 1: dip your toe in the pool of radical ideas, to
- 0:52Speaker 1: be establishment without looking or sounding like it. Trump and
- 0:55Speaker 1: the Maga movement are the best example of doing this.
- 0:59Speaker 1: In the UK, parties that have been around since Moses
- 1:02Speaker 1: was a linebacker are being absolutely whipped in the polls
- 1:06Speaker 1: by newer upstarts with one thing on their pledged cards,
- 1:09Speaker 1: radical change. The Conservatives have been around for two hundred years,
- 1:14Speaker 1: reform UK six. The big issues, of course do differ
- 1:18Speaker 1: our cost of living malaise as their immigration. So the
- 1:22Speaker 1: temptation must be to embrace a bit of that radical spirit,
- 1:25Speaker 1: and Labour might just do that. Yet we just don't
- 1:28Speaker 1: know what they're cooking up behind the scenes. My prediction, though,
- 1:32Speaker 1: establishment parties will do what establishment parties do, stick to
- 1:36Speaker 1: the script, copy paste the policies, hug the center like
- 1:40Speaker 1: a koala to a tree, and I hope their buddies
- 1:42Speaker 1: grab enough from the fraying edges to get them across
- 1:45Speaker 1: the line. Their bet is that crises come and go,
- 1:49Speaker 1: but established parties don't, even though the Brits and the
- 1:54Speaker 1: Americans show us they can and do. For more from
- 1:58Speaker 1: early edition with Ryan Bread. Listen live to news talks.
