- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to everyone the critics.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The show where a guest picked a movie rated below 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Yanis Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: My guest today is Comedian, creator Philadelphia's acting school of excellence, and the number one PES streamer in the world.
- 0:23SPEAKER_05: Hello, I think I think I'm the uh number one Pez5 streamer.
- 0:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's from 2005.
- 0:29SPEAKER_05: I don't think I'm the top one of the new game.
- 0:34SPEAKER_05: Is anyone streaming that new game though?
- 0:36SPEAKER_05: Uh I think people seem to like it.
- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I checked and I I'm literally the I think I'm the only person streaming Pez 5.
- 0:46SPEAKER_05: It's like me and like a like a Portuguese child, I think.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: You should collab.
- 0:52SPEAKER_05: No, I should wipe him out.
- 0:53SPEAKER_05: I should recall him in my competition.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure he's not doing the same thing as you though.
- 0:59SPEAKER_05: No, hopefully.
- 1:00SPEAKER_05: I'd be furious if he was.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: So how are you doing today?
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: I'm good, thank you.
- 1:07SPEAKER_05: Um I've not done much.
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: I slept very late, so I woke up late.
- 1:11SPEAKER_05: And gonna go for a run and work on my Twitch stream stuff, and that's it.
- 1:15SPEAKER_05: What about you?
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I also slept late because I was uh up late watching this film.
- 1:21SPEAKER_05: Oh, yep, sorry.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: No, it's it's it's my fault for watching it so late.
- 1:25unknown: Yeah.
- 1:25SPEAKER_05: It's quite long, innit?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: It's about two hours, yeah, like just shorter two hours.
- 1:30SPEAKER_05: I think that's too long, personally, in in general for films.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Two hours is a good length.
- 1:35SPEAKER_05: Do you think I mean it's a long time.
- 1:38SPEAKER_05: I think no, no, you're right.
- 1:39SPEAKER_05: I think anything over two hours is is too much.
- 1:43SPEAKER_05: Um I watched The Irishman in cinema.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, so did I.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: Oh, I shouldn't have done that.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: I mean I watched it at the I went to the film festival to watch it, and it was just like everyone so everyone there was just kind of uh really into watching it, but by the end we're all just like exhausted.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: What film festival was that?
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Uh the London Film Festival.
- 2:02SPEAKER_05: Oh, cool.
- 2:03SPEAKER_05: I need to go to more film festivals.
- 2:05SPEAKER_05: I used to, I studied film and stuff, and I do want to say for anyone listening, um, basically, I'm always scared of saying that I like the film Revolver because I don't want people to think I'm an idiot.
- 2:16SPEAKER_05: Do you know what I mean?
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've discussed this with other people, like so this came up on the podcast already.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Uh people are kind of like intimidated with saying, Oh, I love this film, but then but then it's also we've been saying like um how basically we went to film school, all these people, and then they cut they get out of so everyone's really pretentious there, and then you get out of it and you realize it doesn't actually matter, and you just want to literally I I did so like my film school thing, I I got a media writing and production degree.
- 2:49SPEAKER_05: Um I'm sh I'm certain I'm the only person from that course doing anything related to film and TV really now.
- 2:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, definitely.
- 2:58SPEAKER_05: Most people don't most people don't bother with it after that, yeah.
- 3:01SPEAKER_05: Um, and you know, and yeah, my point is there's loads of pretentious people there that like did amazing essays about like Hitchcock and stuff, and I didn't know what was going on.
- 3:10SPEAKER_05: Um, but what I meant to say is that I am uh quite a pretentious film person.
- 3:15SPEAKER_05: Oh okay.
- 3:16SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 3:17SPEAKER_05: So I am like that.
- 3:18SPEAKER_05: Like I I love like Arty film.
- 3:20SPEAKER_05: My favorite director is um that Yanis Varifakis.
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: No, that's an author.
- 3:26SPEAKER_05: That's an author.
- 3:27SPEAKER_05: Um, my favorite.
- 3:28SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's embarrassing.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: My favourite is uh something I can't name.
- 3:31SPEAKER_05: My favorite author is him.
- 3:32SPEAKER_05: No, I've just forgotten.
- 3:34SPEAKER_05: He did uh Dog Tooth and the favourite uh Lethimos Lathimos.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I can't I can never say his name.
- 3:40SPEAKER_05: Lanth yeah, yeah, Yorgos Lanthimos.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Lanthimos, yeah.
- 3:43SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Shut myself up as well.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: I don't, in fact, don't don't even edit that out.
- 3:47SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm fine with that, with me making that very embarrassing mistake.
- 3:51SPEAKER_05: Yorgos Lanthimos, he's like my favourite director.
- 3:53SPEAKER_05: His films are very weird, like you know, yeah, he's I like it.
- 3:56SPEAKER_05: Um I'm just saying that as like a caveat for if anyone you know is angry at me for lacking revolver.
- 4:01SPEAKER_05: No reason to be angry at you.
- 4:04SPEAKER_05: They might.
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: This because this film, uh people love to slag it off, that's the thing.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I do remember it being a huge I remember a lot coming out about it when it when it first came out, there was a lot of hate towards it, but I feel like it's died down now.
- 4:19SPEAKER_05: I feel like it's unfortunate because like the thing with I don't like reviewing in general, like the star system and the you know, I I understand it exists, but you get it a lot in comedy where you feel that the reviewer is reviewing the person a lot of the time, more than the show or the film or whatever.
- 4:38SPEAKER_05: So I think a lot of people they knew they knew who Guy Ritchie is.
- 4:41SPEAKER_05: And look, I'm not a huge Guy Ritchie fan.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: Like, I I know a lot of his films are stupid.
- 4:45SPEAKER_05: People say this is his worst film, it's not.
- 4:47SPEAKER_05: Rock and roller is his worst film.
- 4:48SPEAKER_05: Have you seen that?
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: I I prefer Rock and Roller, but Really, I've seen I I think he has got worse films than this.
- 4:55SPEAKER_05: I haven't seen all of them.
- 4:56SPEAKER_05: I I have I I've seen I think most of the gangster ones.
- 5:00SPEAKER_05: I've seen he done Sherlock Holmes, didn't he?
- 5:01SPEAKER_05: I've not seen Aladdin.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Aladdin's bad.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, I'm a I'm a fan of the original, so I'm not like I had it on video when I was little, so I'm not gonna watch it.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: I don't think I don't think I can.
- 5:11SPEAKER_05: Um but generally I don't hate him.
- 5:13SPEAKER_05: Like, and also this is something worth saying as well.
- 5:15SPEAKER_05: Like before so I've been very lucky in the last sort of few years.
- 5:19SPEAKER_05: I've got little acting roles, yeah, but a very tiny role in a film as well, and you see the work that goes into it all, and the film that like the film I was in uh last Christmas, which I was a tiny role in, that didn't get reviewed very well.
- 5:33SPEAKER_05: Like it's it's doing all right now, like it's sort of it got destroyed by critics and then it's sort of improved, people were nicer about it.
- 5:41SPEAKER_05: But I I can understand that that's quite a horrible thing, and like so I don't like to just slag off films anymore like I used to, unless there's something very offensive in it, then I don't you don't need to have a go at a film if you don't really like it, in my opinion.
- 5:55SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 5:56SPEAKER_05: Um like not publicly, like you know.
- 5:59SPEAKER_05: Um but like so I get that a lot of people don't like Guy Ritchie's style.
- 6:03SPEAKER_05: I I get that a lot of it is quite silly, um, a lot of the characters and the themes and and all the blokish and the fake London gangster thing, especially because I'm from London and it is a bit annoying, but I I I you know I do think he still is a skillful director, to be fair.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, I I can't fault his directing skills.
- 6:23SPEAKER_05: No, I mean look at Snatch, like it's a very fun film.
- 6:26SPEAKER_05: Again, people don't like it, it's a bit silly, but it's entertaining, isn't it?
- 6:30SPEAKER_05: Like like people criticize Revolver.
- 6:33SPEAKER_05: When I was just looking through some reviews just now on Rotten Tomatoes, people have criticized it for being confusing and all over the place.
- 6:41SPEAKER_05: They don't say it's boring though.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: It's not a boring film.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: I'll give it that.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: It's not a boring film.
- 6:47SPEAKER_05: And for me, that's the worst.
- 6:48SPEAKER_05: I I don't want to be bored when I'm watching a film.
- 6:50SPEAKER_05: Like I was watching something the other day, which I'm sure it's a great film.
- 6:54SPEAKER_05: I didn't get to the I'll I'll give it I'll give the rest of it a watch later.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: But The Martian, have you seen that?
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:00SPEAKER_05: I I was watching it on Netflix, I got like halfway through, I was just so bored with it.
- 7:04SPEAKER_05: Do you know what I mean?
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: It was such a slow pace.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: I'm I I like quite slow-paced films though.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: I don't Oh, you do?
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't mind I don't find that necessarily boring.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: I find it boring if there's like no purpose for the story, I feel like.
- 7:18SPEAKER_05: That's yeah, I think that's more my point.
- 7:20SPEAKER_05: I felt like The Martian wasn't going anywhere for me.
- 7:23SPEAKER_05: Because I do actually, because I I don't fully believe what I said, because I do like I I like a film like um Um what's it called?
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy.
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: Um people accuse that of being boring because it's a bit slow paced, but I love that film and I do like the slowness of it.
- 7:39SPEAKER_05: Um and a lot of um David Lynch's stuff can be quite slow, and I do like that.
- 7:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:44SPEAKER_05: But when there's a film like yeah, when there's a bit more of an obvious film and it's quite slow, it winds me up a bit.
- 7:51SPEAKER_05: But yeah, like Revolver is not a boring film.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: No, there's a lot that happens in it.
- 7:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think a lot of people think too much happens.
- 7:59SPEAKER_05: Um do you want to talk about the plot?
- 8:01SPEAKER_05: Sure, let's just go over that.
- 8:03SPEAKER_05: But also, um what where are you with spoilers on this?
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, we're just gonna talk about all everything.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: This film came out in 2005, I think it's fine.
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: If people are l I think people are listening a bit, but they're gonna know what it is.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: So yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:18SPEAKER_05: Um okay, fine.
- 8:19SPEAKER_05: Because there are like big spoilers in it.
- 8:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 8:22SPEAKER_05: Basically.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Okay, so this film came out in 2005.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: It was made by Guy Richie, and it's it's got 15% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 8:31SPEAKER_05: Oh wow.
- 8:33SPEAKER_05: It's not that bad.
- 8:35SPEAKER_05: I understand, I can understand if people don't like I don't also I don't feel like people have to like what I like, you know.
- 8:40SPEAKER_05: Um I can understand if it had like 50% or a little bit higher, or whatever, or even 40, but 15% is like that's that's not a film then.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: That's just that's something terrible, isn't it?
- 8:54SPEAKER_05: That's um that's like a one-star review of like a show, of like a live show, yeah, which means it's a mess.
- 9:01SPEAKER_05: And I don't think that's fair.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: No.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Um but it's a it's just an aggregate of all the reviews together, so it's it's just taken all the anything that's positive, anything that's negative.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: So it's only got 15% of the reviews that are positive, which is quite surprising.
- 9:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, so yeah, so what I got from it, I so I listened to um it was on some radio show I heard.
- 9:24SPEAKER_05: It was actually Adam and Joe, if people know Adam and Joe, um, one of their old podcasts, they were talking about um they they had a competition called Crap Commentary Corner, uh where Joe would play uh commentary from a film and and people at home had to guess what film it was.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: And if you hear, if you hear Guy Richie talk about this film, I think you can see why it irritated people because he talks about the colour scheme, the colour scheme in the film, like green, red, and something else and what it represents, and it sounds very pretentious.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: And I was thinking about this, like you see someone like David Lynch, right, who um he makes these very weird films, yeah, and he doesn't explain any of them.
- 10:06SPEAKER_05: And that's great.
- 10:07SPEAKER_05: And then I I watched a video uh a couple of weeks uh a couple of months ago.
- 10:11SPEAKER_05: I watched a four-hour video on YouTube explaining all of Twin Peaks.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Four hour video, yeah, yeah.
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: Which it's it's incredible, and there's so many like things that you wouldn't have realized, which I didn't pick up on, and it's great, and I I really love that David Lynch just made it and just doesn't he doesn't talk about it, he doesn't explain what things represent or anything.
- 10:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, whereas Guy Ritchie explains everything, you know?
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: I I have a theory about this film with him.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: So I I have a theory that it was so he made Lockstock and Snatch, first of all.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: They're the gangster films and everything, everyone loved them.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Then he went on to make Swept Away, which was his art house film.
- 10:56SPEAKER_05: I haven't seen it.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: So he made that, it bombed, it did terribly.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: I have a feeling he wanted to make an art house film, another one, but he uh but because it's the last one bombed, he went and he went the gangster route on it, and he's like, let me do this, and let me show how intelligent I let me show how good of a director I can be, let me show how smart I am with all of this.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: And now snuck it in.
- 11:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and so now sneakily made an art house.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: And so with that, that's why he wants to say, Oh, like this is why I'm doing this is why I've done this, this is what this means, this is like he wants to show that he is a smart director.
- 11:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I feel kind of bad for him really, because like like this film visually, I think it's amazing a lot of it.
- 11:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, it looks great.
- 11:43SPEAKER_05: Um, I don't love all the character.
- 11:44SPEAKER_05: Like, I'm not saying I love everything about this film, I don't like the character.
- 11:48SPEAKER_05: Is it is it um Mark Strong who plays the guy who never misses?
- 11:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I don't like that stuff.
- 11:56SPEAKER_05: Um and and some of it I didn't, you know.
- 11:59SPEAKER_05: Um the animation bits in it look a bit dated now.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: I I was gonna get to that later, but like I don't get the animation in it, I don't see the point of it.
- 12:09SPEAKER_05: No, I I just saw I was watching a YouTube video just now about someone explaining trying to explain the film, and apparently those bits didn't really happen or something, which is why they're animated.
- 12:18SPEAKER_05: But I think yeah, I think he did overcomplicate it a bit with the animation.
- 12:23SPEAKER_05: And the problem with any modern animation is that it always looks dated, doesn't it?
- 12:26SPEAKER_05: Like even like toy like you look at Toy Story 1 now, Toy Story 1, you look at the first Toy Story, and like it doesn't look good anymore, you know?
- 12:36SPEAKER_05: Like a lot of these films, they like they're still great, but it looks it it takes itself, and it's only been 15 years since this film, so exactly.
- 12:45SPEAKER_05: That's yeah, that's always a problem.
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: Um but I think there's certainly stuff in it that that's pretty good.
- 12:51SPEAKER_05: Uh the whole thing, oh, this is an interesting fact of and I love I love stuff like this, to be honest.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: Um so this there's a character called Sam Gold in it.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: And am I right in am I uh just correct me if I'm wrong, you never see this person, right?
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: No, you don't ever see them.
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: Okay, so apparently Sam and Sam Gold controls everything, and there's a lot of theories that Sam Gold is the ego, which is that's what's going on.
- 13:14SPEAKER_05: So it's everyone's ego is controlling them, basically.
- 13:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 13:17SPEAKER_05: Um the producer of the film is called Sam Goldwyn.
- 13:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I just sort I just found that out now.
- 13:25SPEAKER_05: I like stuff like that.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: And Sam Goldwyn controls everything.
- 13:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so it's I think it's the one of the executive producers, and I think that's a little, I guess that's a little statement on films generally.
- 13:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 13:37SPEAKER_05: Um But I think that's yeah.
- 13:40SPEAKER_05: I I yeah, I like I kind of like that about it.
- 13:43SPEAKER_05: Um I like Andre 3000 in it.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's great in it.
- 13:47SPEAKER_05: Um I'm surprised he's not in more stuff.
- 13:49SPEAKER_05: I know he's done a few films.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he hasn't done anything in a long time.
- 13:52SPEAKER_05: He's a good actor, man.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:54SPEAKER_05: I thought I thought he did great in it.
- 13:56SPEAKER_05: Um I like the twist at the end a lot.
- 13:59SPEAKER_05: Um I going am I getting too ahead of myself?
- 14:02SPEAKER_05: Should should talk about it.
- 14:03SPEAKER_05: Let's go through the plot a bit.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's go through the plot and then we can like discuss it as it comes up.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so it opens with like a bunch of quotes.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: Like so many quotes.
- 14:16SPEAKER_05: I don't even remember this.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: So it's like what what I wrote I started writing them down and then I just like gave up halfway through because I just couldn't even want to write anymore.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: But it was just like the greatest enemy will hide in the last place you would ever look, Caesar.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: And then it's like the only way to get smarter is by playing a smarter opponent.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Fundamentals of chess.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: First rule of business is to protect your investment, something like that.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: And then and then it's a machi Machiavelli quote.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Uh and it just too much.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: It keeps going and going and going.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: I'm like, Usually there's like one quote.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that that's not a great idea.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: But they just it it they come up throughout the film, each one of them.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: They keep getting they keep being shown afterwards, and it's there are points to them, but it's just kind of like you could have just shown them throughout the film as opposed to having them all at the start.
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: I agree.
- 15:08SPEAKER_05: I wonder with stuff like that whether that was out of his hands.
- 15:11SPEAKER_05: Um whether whether like you know what I mean?
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: Because it does happen in a lot of films where producers say, um, you can't do that, or this is too confusing.
- 15:21SPEAKER_05: You've got to change this.
- 15:23SPEAKER_05: Um like I heard in um uh I won't say what this is, it will be a spoiler of another thing, but like breaking bad, there's a very crucial thing that happens in it where somebody somebody dies in it, and that's it's this isn't really a spoiler in that, so I won't say yeah, I won't be specific.
- 15:41SPEAKER_05: Somebody dies in it, and originally the person was meant to be killed, uh, but it would have been too cruel.
- 15:47SPEAKER_05: So what happens is that a character basically lets another character die.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, I know what you're talking about then, yeah.
- 15:53SPEAKER_05: You know what I'm talking about, yeah.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: Um sorry, I don't know if that was too random of a thing to to bring up.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: But um, but you know what I mean?
- 16:00SPEAKER_05: Like sometimes big things can be changed, and I wonder with that, that sounds well then you don't, I don't know with Guy Richie, really.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: Um sorry, carry on.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, it's fine.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: And then like stay Jason Staten shows up and he's got the longest hair, so he just looks very weird with long hair.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: That's great, it does not suit him.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: And he's been released from prison after seven years, and then it immediately cuts to two years later, and I thought, well, just show that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: But then I it does serve a purpose later, but like at least he doesn't have an American accent though.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, there's some people in it with American accents that don't need American accents.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: That's another thing about this, is that there's no they never like specify where this is set.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Um it's some kind of like amalgamation of Vegas and London.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: It seems like so.
- 16:53SPEAKER_05: I think I I think it's probably representing like Hollywood because when he talks about there's bits in the film where he talks about ego and he says you want everyone to see how funny and clever you are, blah blah blah.
- 17:03SPEAKER_05: And I think maybe that's what he's thinking with it.
- 17:06SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 17:06SPEAKER_05: I think a lot of it represents maybe his industry and ego within it.
- 17:11SPEAKER_05: I I think that's that's what it seems like.
- 17:14SPEAKER_05: Possible.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Um so you think this is all just like uh a thing about Hollywood then?
- 17:19SPEAKER_05: Possibly, yeah.
- 17:20SPEAKER_05: I think I think that's why it's a lot of it.
- 17:22SPEAKER_05: I think that when it's vague, I think that's done on purpose.
- 17:25SPEAKER_05: Um I didn't think about the accents though before you mentioned it, to be honest.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: It's just that Mark Strong's accent and oh yeah.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Um who else?
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: There's someone else that has there's another guy in it who has a really bad American accent, and I looked him up and he was from like Cheshire or something.
- 17:43SPEAKER_05: Uh that's a shame, isn't it?
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: Right, just make him from just make him from Cheshire, it doesn't matter.
- 17:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean I guess it just depends on the actor.
- 17:51SPEAKER_05: Like uh Jason Statham cannot do a good American accent if you've seen him do one.
- 17:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um Mark Strong is an incredible actor, he can do it.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: I don't think he did a good American accent in this.
- 18:02SPEAKER_05: Okay, I can't really remember now, but um I've seen things yeah.
- 18:08SPEAKER_05: He's in uh Grimsby.
- 18:09SPEAKER_05: Have you seen that?
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: Alright.
- 18:12SPEAKER_05: Move on.
- 18:13SPEAKER_05: Do you not do uh would you like that as well?
- 18:16SPEAKER_05: No.
- 18:16SPEAKER_05: No, no.
- 18:18SPEAKER_05: If anyone tries to defend that on your podcast, don't let them on.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: And that might even be above 40%.
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: It can't be.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 18:26SPEAKER_05: I gotta look it up now, actually.
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you've got to check it.
- 18:28SPEAKER_05: It can't be.
- 18:29SPEAKER_05: It's I I watched half of it, it's the worst thing I've ever seen.
- 18:33SPEAKER_05: That is oh 38%.
- 18:37SPEAKER_05: See, that that's a disgrace.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: That is shocking.
- 18:41SPEAKER_05: That's unbelievable that that and that's better than this.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: That's not better than this.
- 18:45SPEAKER_05: Mark Strong is in both films, yeah.
- 18:47SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 18:47SPEAKER_05: And on his Rotten Tomatoes record, the fact that this is below that, that that is shocking.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: This this must be the lowest one on his on his record.
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: You'd think so, yeah.
- 18:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because 12 is very low.
- 19:00SPEAKER_05: Not many things are that low, right?
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: 15, 15.
- 19:02SPEAKER_05: Sorry, 15%.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: Don't rank it too low.
- 19:04SPEAKER_05: No, no, no.
- 19:06SPEAKER_05: You know what?
- 19:06SPEAKER_05: It was 12.
- 19:07SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 19:08SPEAKER_05: When I first yeah, it was 12%.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: When I first saw it, I was at uni.
- 19:11SPEAKER_05: Ah.
- 19:12SPEAKER_05: And that was about seven years ago.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:16SPEAKER_05: I guess.
- 19:17SPEAKER_05: Um, and it it was that that I remember seeing that and being shocked, yeah.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, um you yeah, uh yeah, so like it cuts two years later and then it goes into the casino with uh Rayleigh Otis character who um says that he owes Jason Statham for something that he did for him.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Um and so Jason Statham goes up to him, gets sent up to him, but he's worried about taking the lift, and he feels trapped in the lift.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Ah yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Um and he really wants to take the stairs, which it comes becomes like a recurring thing throughout it.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Um it's never like like it makes sense in that it's it's to do with like the uh I guess it's like the uh solitary confinement stuff almost.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: But then it's also I guess if you're talking about the ego stuff, it's also like he tra he feels trapped mentally well or something like that.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 20:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's a theme.
- 20:15SPEAKER_05: That's a theme throughout, isn't it?
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: So he like he does all that and then and then I wrote down I wrote down that everyone is every everyone just said some inspirational quote like like a YouTube business video.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: That's like the entire that's all the dialogue in this film, it just feels like that.
- 20:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I get that.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: And then so they basically that they Jason Stason sits down at the casino table and he just decides to gamble on like all or nothing of what Ray Leza has, and uh he loses it the first time, and then he says, I'll I'll I'll toss you for everything this time and double or nothing, and he wins, and then so he wins twice and he like takes all the money about.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: And then he like goes downstairs and like goes to cash it in and goes to leave, and then some guy gives him a card that says he can help uh and that he should take the stairs.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: And I know, sorry, that he can help and he should take the lift, but he he goes to take the stairs instead and he collapses.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Don't remember it.
- 21:24SPEAKER_05: Interesting.
- 21:25SPEAKER_05: I don't quite remember that.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: No, he collapses like the guy gives him the card and he says you should take the lift.
- 21:30SPEAKER_05: Like I remember him collapsing, but I don't remember the signific you know what I mean?
- 21:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because you're right, like there is too much happening.
- 21:36SPEAKER_05: This is like the first five minutes of describing That's a fair it's a fair criticism to say there's too much happening in this film, definitely.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Um then Yeah, then I said it's it's pure film school shots, uh cigar smoking, classical music playing.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: It says all of that.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean Um at least at the start it feels that way.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: I think
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: gets better but yeah it gets better yeah um again like I don't know how um uh I don't know if that was all sort of done on purpose that stuff that's I don't yeah I guess I guess it depends how much you're willing to how much faith you're willing to put in Guy Ritchie like because like again I bring up David Lynch again because I've been watching a lot of his stuff and basically everything he does is genius and it is I think but everything he does is open to interpretation and there's so many levels and like there's this whole thing in Twin Peaks about the food representing certain things coffee fueling the investigation and all these things and I feel like you could I I don't know I mean how much respect do you give a film?
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: I think that's a big part of it isn't it I think I don't know like yeah like other classic other shots that are kind of more obvious is that all something is is it all to do with past films that have been made and because I do think Hollywood is a big part of what he's trying to because he's in that world isn't he and um I guess it's not like I feel like David Lynch has had uh at least whatever it is how many films into this about four films into his career he'd earned that reputation guy Ritchie hadn't earned that yet he he was very like on the nose with everything.
- 23:24SPEAKER_05: Also I should say I know how funny it is that we are comparing David Lynch to Guy Ritchie.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Like I know I know how ridiculous that is like it's really stupid I'm trying to show like the extreme end of like arty stuff you know um uh you sorry carry on no it's right um yeah and then it's like there's all this stuff that happens and there's a horrifying shot of Ray Leoto in his pants it's just yeah with like um he's in his pants and he's got like the blue light and that's when it kind of starts that whole effect of like oh the the red blue stuff that you were talking about.
- 24:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah yeah I don't I I don't like that in this film to be honest.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 24:05SPEAKER_05: The colour stuff I like how it looks but I think the whole when you hear him talk about it so what did he say about the red and the blue and everything?
- 24:13SPEAKER_05: I can't remember.
- 24:14SPEAKER_05: You know what I'll do a quick Google of I won't like read loads but the colour scheme in um revolver but when you hear him talk about it you should look this up um and it's quite annoying it's like too much and I think it's that thing of like you don't have to say it like leave that for people to find out.
- 24:35SPEAKER_05: I'll just give you a little bit of it.
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: Jake's name is green and the colour green is associated within the central column or the pillar of cabalistic traditions.
- 24:45SPEAKER_05: It's like I think cabalistic might be how you say it it's like I think it's a bit it's he's gone a bit too deep with that.
- 24:51SPEAKER_05: Oh right because he was a he was into that him and Madonna were into that at the time him and Madonna yeah and I think like yeah I think or I think to be honest I think my main problem with it is that he told everyone he did that yeah you know like just leave it leave people to work it out or like make their own interpretation for it.
- 25:10SPEAKER_05: Also films that explain stuff too much wind me up a bit as well.
- 25:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah like you'll see it with main like the most mainstream films do it don't they where it's like they just completely say everything at the end sometimes and it's like summing everything up.
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah I love it when like um when you see something like I'm gonna be showing my pretentious side again I go to the Curzon cinema before lockdown quite a lot in Soho.
- 25:35SPEAKER_05: I've been going since I was like 16 because it used to be cheap tickets but I I I I like watching random films there like random foreign films.
- 25:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah and I love when you're like the ending isn't always that clear and you're just left thinking about it for days.
- 25:49SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 25:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah I much prefer that and yeah I think I think he made a big mistake because everyone just slagged him off when he started talking about the colour scheme didn't work in his favour you know it's weird like I get I I didn't even this is like me missing it completely but I didn't even put like his name like Jake Green and the colour green together like and gold Sam Gold yeah and there's there's probably more there's probably so much more but um so his character is Avi and he says you will die in three days from oh sorry no then they go to Andre 3000 that's Avi.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: Yep and so Avi says you will die in three days from an from an ailment that can uh that can ruin your blood and organs something like that.
- 26:39SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: So and then so but Jason Satan's like very he's like questioning it constantly he's like oh do I believe that or should I or should I or they just want to take my money because they want they want him to assist and they want all his money to assist on something and they'll save him basically but and he has three hours to decide.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: So he goes to like another doctor and the other doctor says oh yeah this is uh this is true and he's like oh I don't trust that one either so he goes for another one and then they say the same thing.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: It's just like okay we get it at this point.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah um it's just a lot of there's a lot of like doubt in this film.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Hmm and I don't know if it's just to confuse us.
- 27:24SPEAKER_05: I don't yeah there's a lot again there's too much going on even the Andre 3000 why is he called Avi?
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: I bet there's something in that yeah it's like an avatar probably like is it probably an A an AVI file a video file I can't I hope it's not that that's what guy Ritchie makes his films in um what's the other do you remember what the other guy's called uh I don't I don't think his name is brought up that much let me just I'll just have a quick look at the other guy is like the gangster character though he's not always he's always a gangster in films yeah he's in is he in sopranos yeah I love him um I'll just have a quick look um Vincent he played oh he's called Zach Zach okay Zach is that some sort of a video file as well uh there's a character and this this annoys me as well like look I'm looking through the IMDB of the characters' names now there's Jake Green Dorothy Macca Zach Avi French Paul French Paul yeah that's that's the uh Cheshire guy yeah oh is that oh yeah yeah yeah okay uh Billy Sorter there's a Mark Strong is called sorter sorter because he sorts things out it's all it's all like such cliche names for like a guy Richards he loves that he loves all that but yeah you know that's his style yeah um yeah yeah so then it goes back to like Rayleigh's on a dressing gown again and he's belittle Mark Strong over missing the shot three times so I said I get oh I've just realized that it's three days three hours three shots uh three doctors three doctors yeah oh what is the number three uh yeah why is Rayleigh Otta called Dorothy is that ever a man's name not that I know of yeah and then then we see the money though and the money says twelve on it it's like so the money it it's the bill the the the dollar bill it's not a dollar it's like not a real one and it says twelve on it right so I don't know whatever that is but it's never brought up again and then uh but you see it mixed in with dollars as well which is weird 12 what could okay so four times three is twelve there's three main colours on the colour scheme there's three doctors there's uh and there's something else that comes up in a second yeah three eddies three eddies yeah there's the three eddies that used to work for Macca and they are the three Irish guys do you not remember them okay three Irish guys I can't really man last night but I have seen it a few times um I've seen it like three times but I remember enough and I watch some YouTube videos like recapping the plot um uh yeah yeah and then so he goes for like he goes to the three eighties and they like someone starts saying something and they bleep it he bleeps it out he like someone swears and he bleeps it out and it's just some like stylistic choice for that very specific thing that they bleep out whatever's been said there and it's never done again it's never done again which is really weird stuff I like I I yeah personally I'm liking the sound of all this nonsense yeah I've forgotten a lot of this to be honest and there's a there's a lot that I didn't really notice when I watched it because there's so much going on but I like the weirdness like again I'm gonna compare this to another filmmaker on the other end of the spectrum the colour spectrum um what's he called again the one who did uh have you seen melancholia yeah oh uh Lars von Tria Lars von Tria right a lot again a lot of his stuff I don't I don't love but he's got some he's got some great films um there's very subtle things in that which you only realize when you kind of watch closely I mean I don't know how subtle this is again this isn't a huge spoiler of the film so don't worry but in melancholia it's about the what the world is possibly about to end by a planet hitting Earth and blah blah blah right there's a thing early on in the film where they're talking about um the golf a golf course it's all a lot of it is set on a golf course and it's how many holes in a golf course is it 18 let me just double check I got this right it is 18 holes no no no I got I got I believe you I got that right there's something very specific um yeah that's it when I was watching it um and they even mention it because I know there's 18 holes generally on a golf course but they mention it in the film as well early on about the 18 holes at the golf course and at the end when something quite dramatic has happened they run past the 19th hole.
- 32:27SPEAKER_05: Ah yeah and I love stuff like that yeah you just look and you see the number 19 on the flag and you're like that doesn't exist.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: Do you know what I've just realized as well I just had to look it up to double check.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: But there's but there we were talking about like the ego and everything.
- 32:44SPEAKER_05: But there's the ego the id in the super ego which is the three oh oh and I wonder if that's relevant to and I wonder if it's like there's something to do with that there must be there must be he's you know he definitely read it read like a book going he read a book and then it blew his mind just read a book on Kabbalah and then yeah yeah yeah I don't know I mean I I in fact after this I am gonna look into that Kabbalah stuff once you get really into it suddenly that's fine.
- 33:22SPEAKER_05: Listen man I'm not ashamed to say this I after I watched the four hour video about Twin Peaks yeah there's something in it that is so amazing I thought that David Lynch did in Twin Peaks right yeah um I was considering joining his meditation thing.
- 33:35SPEAKER_05: His meditation thing's supposed to be really good apparently but it's expensive yeah yeah that's the main issue with it because you have to get a teacher and I think the cheapest I could get it for was 300 pounds.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah I've seen it for thousands yeah yeah yeah it's it's usually thousands but they've done something anyway won't get into that but um so I could well get into the Kabbalah stuff because of revolver I think even guy Rich is passed it at this point he probably I mean yeah no but I do I I genuinely do like this film to be totally honest it's not it's not perfect but I do I I think there's enough in it that I enjoy um I think it's very interesting like I said it's not boring um do you want to carry on with the plot before we get to the twist sure is there more that you need to oh yeah we're like at the very beginning I I'm just gonna try and go like we're at the beginning yeah I'm trying to give like key points as well yeah yeah yeah okay there's so much in this film I think I wrote 10 pages of notes just to like remember everything oh my god alright well you can skip through it you don't need to I know I'm trying to like skip I'm trying to skip through it as well uh they there's a lot of there's a lot to do with so I'll I'll talk about the three eddies because that's an important key that's a key part of it.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: So the three eddies used to work for Macca and the money disappeared and then and so this money used to disappear from uh from basically from what they did and so uh they want they all want to know what's going on and everything.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Maca wants to know what's going on and he kills for some reason he kills Jason Satham's brother's wife and I can't remember why that happened but Jason and then Jason Satham goes to jail and because he doesn't grass.
- 35:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah because remember in all of Guy Rich's film grassing is the worst thing you can do and in your streams yeah yeah do you remember that's basically what I was copying it from that's what happens in uh yeah because that that's I just think it's so dumb like I I understand the thing about snitching in general like I get that but it's just when it's made into a big thing like uh so dumb it's dumb in it like uh it happens so it happens in thingy in the other um rock and roller right there's a character where it turns out he was a grass all along so he's the worst guy and it's like come on they're all like murderers by the way yeah all the characters but the one who's a grass he's the worst you know it's just really silly sorry yeah so that so Macca puts the three eddies into concrete and that's the whole big thing is like oh he put them into concrete that's disgusting there's the whole big like situation there.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Jason Statham gets out and whatever he goes into he goes to stay in a motel and he's been put up by uh Andre 3000 character and that's when Miss Walker shows up and she starts talking about and Macca starts talking about um working with Mr Gold so Miss Walker is the uh supposedly the worker like the assistant of Mr.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: Gold or where what's his name?
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Um Sam Gold Sam Gold yes and that's when I wrote down oh there's a great shot of him inside a church walking away and him walking away it's just like a really great shot of the whole church and you see him like walking straight down and I thought that was like well that was the first shot that I really enjoyed in the film.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: Oh right then they go to play chess and then then it's one of three thousand playing chess with Jason Statham and I I just rolled my eyes there because I was like oh another chess oh there's a lot of chess there's a lot of chess so Jason Statham had you find out that Jason Statham was in solitary for seven years and that's when the whole that's when you start to realise oh that's why he's afraid of lifts mate possibly and then you find out that he had all these like chess moves written inside uh books that he was getting from the two people on either side of him that he's so there's two people on either side of his jail cell and they're sort of helping him out that that's the whole thing.
- 37:47SPEAKER_05: But then they rob him.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah they leave without a trace and they say I will always help you and then they and then he gets out and then they he finds out they've stolen everything of his yeah it's all gone but the only thing he keeps is their formula and he uses their formula to like win things.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: So he uses it to gamble and to uh con these other people as well it's uh it's x squared times six is that's the formula no not really I'm joking I thought I actually said that in the book it would have been times three oh yeah it would have been x cubed times times three times green no that's how you get green yeah yeah so they they then they all go and steal a safe from uh Ray Liota I can't remember any of their names as I'm going along with it just so no it's it's okay.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: Ray is called Ray Lyota is called um Dorothy close to the IMDB it's called Dorothy for some reason yeah uh and there's loads of cocaine inside I assume it's cocaine they don't say but it's white powder so yeah probably um and then they find out that this other guy Lord John is the only one who get them cocaine uh inside get the cocaine in time to give to to give to Mr Gold because Railiota owes Mr Gold all this stuff um and then back to naked Railiota in a blue room yeah uh yeah which was so it's just like slowly he's like is it like a UV light thing I wonder if that's I I wonder if that symbolizes him sort of being exposed.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: He's exposed and he's also like I think it was progressing to like he was getting more and more naked as it went along ah it's quite interesting.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: So maybe it's just like exposing himself he's becoming more vulnerable.
- 39:47SPEAKER_05: And and the UV light type thing yeah that's that's exposes everything doesn't it yeah um because I guess like every time yeah that's a good thing the good point actually every time he's in that UV light it's when he's most it's when he is most exposed to yeah he's like giving the most the most of himself out yeah yeah yeah and I think there's a lot of that in there as well I saw the this video on the video I was watching on YouTube is where it makes a point of the first time Jason Statham isn't wearing a suit there's something happens there and it's like I think I can't remember there's a lot of I think the costume but I just think like I f partly why I I feel bad for him for this film getting so destroyed by everyone is the work that went in.
- 40:33SPEAKER_05: It's a lot of work yeah and the ideas behind it and I don't think it's that bad.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: I it's definitely not 15% bad no um I think it's just like the idea I don't think it was executed particularly well but I I think there's a lot of good ideas involved in it.
- 40:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah I mean come on there's like there's a lot of worse films yeah like the brothers Grimsby or Grimsby or whatever it's called which um I mean come on that's just the most horrible offensive mad thing I've ever seen um no man shocking I can't believe that's probably over double the rating yeah I mean I don't get it I I guess to be fair I guess it's about expectation isn't it because people would have set their sights like low for that film.
- 41:24SPEAKER_05: You know you know it's a silly comedy so you're gonna review it like that.
- 41:26SPEAKER_05: Whereas Revolver you're potentially reviewing one a classic gangster film.
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah I I think at this also at this point he's made two classic gangster films one bad film and then then this.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: So people were going into it like oh yeah this is back to him being his himself again this is back to like that great so Rock and Roller is a much more straightforward gangster film and I can't stand it.
- 41:54SPEAKER_05: I think it's really unbearable man.
- 41:58SPEAKER_05: And they were going to do a rock and roller too I think they say at the end of the film really arrogantly that there's gonna be a rock and roller too I'm sure there's something like that.
- 42:07SPEAKER_05: Some text comes up or something.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: I I saw it when it came out I can't remember it but I remember liking it more than Revolver at the time yeah well maybe that's something to watch again.
- 42:17SPEAKER_05: That's one I I saw that when it came out I didn't hate it and I saw it again and I thought this is unbearable.
- 42:21SPEAKER_05: It's like yeah um sorry where where are we up to in the plot?
- 42:25SPEAKER_05: Are we near the end yet or are we no are we at the beginning?
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: We're like halfway okay uh so like then it that this is when it starts with all the the the whole thing of like they're gonna go and steal all the money from from uh what's it name Lord John and they're gonna uh so the the the guys all go to steal the money from Lord John and nobody trusts anyone so everyone's like questioning each other in this um then this is when it cuts to the cartoon it goes to like cartoon style uh for some reason and so they gas the room and they steal all the money but then it's like cutting between like the actual uh visuals and then the cartoon style and I don't really get what I'm saying.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah I don't like that bit.
- 43:08SPEAKER_05: I don't get what that's my least I think that's my least favourite thing in the film to be honest that bit.
- 43:13SPEAKER_05: I did see I mentioned before you a YouTube video I watched where the guy said that he thinks it's because some of the things that happened in the cartoon weren't really happening or something.
- 43:22SPEAKER_05: And I think if that's true that's that's overcomplicating it even more.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: Which is like it just kinda it goes a little bit extreme but not enough that you couldn't show it.
- 43:32SPEAKER_05: It feels like he just wanted to show off like this is a cool idea.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: Because also that type of animation did look cool at the time.
- 43:39SPEAKER_05: It's that 3D no I I'm sure it did.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: Like when that was new it's the rotoscoping isn't it it looks like is that what it's called?
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: Where they draw over the film cells.
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah so it's like yeah it's like cartoony 3D almost yeah and I can imagine that that looked quite cool at the time and I think he just thought yeah this will be fun.
- 43:58SPEAKER_05: But yeah I don't think that's a good bit
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: It just it just looks kind of strange.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: Um then uh he goes back to he goes Jo Jason Sathan goes back with the with Andre 3000 and and the other guy and they're talking and they're they're playing chess and everything, and at that moment I wrote down, oh that's weird, look at the books under his ashtray.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: And it's because and he's got he's literally got under the ashtray he's got the quantum mechanics books and all of those things.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, that's interesting.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: Why has he got those?
- 44:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 44:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he doesn't seem like the type of guy that would have those, but you know, um, that's pretty funny.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: Um and so it's interesting for later.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: Uh and so this is when it gets to all the quote stuff of like, how do you keep winning?
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: You and then Andre 5000's um I'm sorry, how do you keep winning, Andre 5000 says, and then Jason Satan's like, you do all the hard work, I just help you along.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: Uh I feed pieces to you and make you think you took those pieces.
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: Um you just watch the uh it's the opponent versus the victim, and you watch the victim hang himself.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: And so there's all that involved in it.
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: So it's Jason Satan telling Andre 3000 that which is which we soon we learn later is something else.
- 45:18SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: Uh skip ahead.
- 45:22SPEAKER_05: Have we got to the bit when uh I don't really love this scene, the bit when the man who never misses goes through the house.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: No.
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: Um I'm trying to skip ahead to like some of that.
- 45:38SPEAKER_05: We can skip ahead to that, man.
- 45:39SPEAKER_05: It's because the stuff we've been saying, it's just that for ages.
- 45:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: It is a lot of that for ages.
- 45:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:47SPEAKER_05: So there's that bit when yeah, the man who never misses.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let me just say this first because it then it'll make sense to that.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: This is a key pop point.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: Uh we find that the Jason Statham lied about the three Eddies.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: Uh they were waiting for him out of prison, and he gave them um oh, this is interesting.
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: He gave him a three percent.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, came up again.
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: Uh so he gave him a loan and and plus three percent back each time.
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: And so he takes from one and repays the other each time, which I don't get how that worked really, because he then it was like, oh I don't know.
- 46:27SPEAKER_05: I'm not I'm not even gonna think about that.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: Because he was also paying each one of them three percent on top of it.
- 46:34SPEAKER_00: Is that good maths?
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: That's what I don't understand.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: It seems like he's losing money there each time.
- 46:39SPEAKER_05: He must have been using the formula, you know.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: Um he gets rich enough to buy hotels.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: And then the Eddies get killed.
- 46:52SPEAKER_05: Um I don't like that stuff.
- 46:53SPEAKER_05: I again, I do feel like the biggest the biggest problem, in my opinion, is just the overcomplicating of things in this film.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:02SPEAKER_05: I'd say that's my main issue with it, to be totally honest.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: Um that's what I mean.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: I'm like reading through it, and I'm like, wait, how did this happen?
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: And trying to connect it to each thing, and it doesn't make quite make sense.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it doesn't quite because you see a film like I watched Knives Out last night, yeah, and that's a film which ties itself up, basically.
- 47:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, perfectly.
- 47:21SPEAKER_05: And this doesn't feel like it manages.
- 47:25SPEAKER_05: It sort of does.
- 47:26SPEAKER_05: I guess it does, but it's just very hard to follow.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: I don't think it does necessarily.
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: But okay.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: I think let's get to that in a little bit, but like they uh I just wrote down there's so many twists and so many cons going on that it's confusing.
- 47:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: Um someone says to Jake, oh, you never left prison.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: Uh and he starts losing his mind.
- 47:49SPEAKER_05: I do like, I I I should say, I do like the internal monologue bits.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: I really hated that voice.
- 47:56SPEAKER_05: Oh, you don't like it?
- 47:57SPEAKER_05: No, I didn't like it.
- 47:57SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't like I don't like all of the times it happens.
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: I don't think at the end, I don't like it.
- 48:04SPEAKER_05: You didn't like it.
- 48:05SPEAKER_05: I I thought it was quite an interesting thing um when he starts getting quite angry and confused in his head.
- 48:14SPEAKER_05: Um I didn't mind it too much.
- 48:17SPEAKER_05: Um but I can understand this is the thing.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: What did you like about that?
- 48:21SPEAKER_05: Is that just that it's interesting that yeah, it's just uh I just thought it's an interesting thing, and you don't know if he's basically mad, you don't know if he is this Sam Gold person all along.
- 48:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but I totally understand with with I don't feel like this with all films, but I can understand if people hate this.
- 48:42SPEAKER_05: I I get it because there's it's quite confusing, there's so much, it is pretentious, so I I understand, but I think in most of it I appreciate what he was going for, and also I think it depends sort of when you watch a film, because I saw this just one night when and again think about expectations.
- 49:00SPEAKER_05: I watched this like I think I was like 21, no, I was probably younger at uni.
- 49:04SPEAKER_05: I just got this film, I might have even rented it from my uni library, which he could do at the time on DVD, and I thought this is gonna be a stupid gangster film, and it's fine, and then it was all these other things, and I think what did it for me, which made I think it was winding me up, and I think is the twist at the end that I did like because I just had no idea.
- 49:24SPEAKER_05: I did not see it coming at all.
- 49:26SPEAKER_05: But I don't know if that's me.
- 49:27SPEAKER_05: I'm not very good with those things generally.
- 49:29SPEAKER_05: I'm quite easily surprised like like a magic show blows my mind, you know what I mean.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: Did you get surprised by all the stuff in Nyes Out?
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: What did you say?
- 49:37SPEAKER_00: Um you don't have to say what it is, but like yes, I did.
- 49:41SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 49:41SPEAKER_05: Um I thought, although I had a feeling because I was looking at the thing is you know, when you're in cinema and you watch a film, you're not totally sure how long is left.
- 49:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 49:49SPEAKER_05: Whereas if you're watching on your PC or TV, you know.
- 49:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and so then when a film feels like it's it's ending, but there's 30 minutes left, you know it's not over.
- 49:58SPEAKER_05: So there's that thing, you know, and also you can tell like this is too easy.
- 50:03SPEAKER_05: Well, I thought that film was excellent.
- 50:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it does it very well because it subverts it also subverts it at the end, so you like it's not entirely what you think.
- 50:10SPEAKER_05: Ver I mean, the last shot of that film I loved.
- 50:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I really, really liked it.
- 50:16SPEAKER_05: But anyway, uh podcast about that.
- 50:18SPEAKER_05: But um, shall we just get to the twist?
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: Sure, yeah, let's let's skip ahead.
- 50:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because it's probably just confusing people.
- 50:26SPEAKER_05: So the last scene from what I remember, and I see why once you remember a bit, then yeah.
- 50:32SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 50:32SPEAKER_05: Something crucial though is that I was just reading that apparently the original cinematic release in the UK at least had a different ending.
- 50:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you were saying before uh we started.
- 50:44SPEAKER_05: So I don't know if that's partly what wound people up, because if this film went nowhere, then it would be very annoying because there's too much going on.
- 50:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but basically the key twist at the end is he from what I remember, he's playing chess against Andre 3000.
- 50:59SPEAKER_05: Yes, and they're talking about the ego, blah blah blah, whatever, whatever.
- 51:03SPEAKER_05: And then suddenly, and and and by the way, Jason Statham is an absolute genius, he's like the best at chess, which I forgot to say, and he's obviously smashing Andre 3000.
- 51:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then suddenly Andre 3000 uh starts winning and just starts taking all these pieces and he basically beats him, and then you realize Andre 3000 and the other gangster guy are the two guys from the jail, yeah, all along, which I did like that.
- 51:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, did you like that twist?
- 51:33SPEAKER_00: I did like that twist.
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: But I thought that's pretty cool.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: Because I'd seen the books earlier, I was like, I had it in my mind.
- 51:38SPEAKER_05: Okay, that's a shame.
- 51:40SPEAKER_05: Um I still liked it.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: I still liked it.
- 51:42SPEAKER_05: I I just thought it obviously like it's quite you know, it's not it's amazing film twists have been done before, it's not like a brand new thing, but like the way that um you basically see what what Jason Statham thinks they look like.
- 51:57SPEAKER_05: So you see the hand, I think you see their hands and stuff of like two old white men.
- 52:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you think yeah, it's described as two old white men that they yeah, because it makes sense that they would be these geniuses that are in prison and they've been working their whole lives on all this stuff, and that makes sense.
- 52:12SPEAKER_05: And then you've got this youngish black guy, and you've got this uh you know, like middle-aged Italian gangster character, yeah, and you just don't piece I did not piece that together that it could be them, and I thought I thought that was great.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: The whole time you are wondering, like, what are they, what is the reason for them, what are they doing with him?
- 52:29SPEAKER_00: You are wondering like what's going on here.
- 52:31SPEAKER_05: Um one thing that I don't think they ever clear up though with that is the whole issue of him like dying in three days, and like yeah, there are holes, there's plot holes, and also I don't like in films when something amazing happens and they don't tell you how.
- 52:50SPEAKER_05: Like, how did they escape prison?
- 52:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 52:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the thing, they escape prison.
- 52:55SPEAKER_00: They don't just get released, they escape.
- 52:57SPEAKER_05: And and by the way, the prison isn't normal, it's like uh it's like a fantasy type, it's not a realistic prison.
- 53:02SPEAKER_05: It's just these like rooms, these like it's like a it's almost like a mental institution.
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it looks like a mental institution, it's like a white walls, and that's it.
- 53:09SPEAKER_05: There's no windows, there's no vents, there's nothing in there, it's just brick walls.
- 53:13SPEAKER_05: And it's like I would have liked to know they don't they don't talk about it, do they, how they got out?
- 53:17SPEAKER_00: No, they say they just say they uh they escaped.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: They just one day they formula.
- 53:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it was like something to do with the formula.
- 53:24SPEAKER_05: They did X squared over something, over blue when they got out, you know?
- 53:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I don't really like that because also like that that tells you that guy Richie doesn't even know how they escape.
- 53:34SPEAKER_05: No, it's just and I I think that's lazy.
- 53:36SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of like there's a lot of stuff in this that's like left of the fantasy of uh left of fantasy, I guess.
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: It's just it's like oh just just accept that this happened.
- 53:46SPEAKER_00: But yeah, you can't have that and then like and then have all this serious stuff where you want to explain all that.
- 53:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 53:53SPEAKER_05: Have you seen the film Now You See Me?
- 53:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:59SPEAKER_00: Now something that's over-explanation to uh well hold on, because there's now you see me too.
- 54:06SPEAKER_05: Have you seen that?
- 54:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's the one where they overexplain everything and they do it because in part one they don't explain anything, and essentially these magicians are just superheroes, yeah.
- 54:17SPEAKER_05: It's they can do anything, it's so and they don't explain it.
- 54:21SPEAKER_05: So, and and it's that thing where that happens in a film, and it's like, okay, you did this cool thing, fine, but like how'd you do it?
- 54:28SPEAKER_05: You you know, yeah.
- 54:29SPEAKER_00: So that I I don't like that, but I I'm more accepting when it's um when it's magic, though.
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: I'm more accepting of it.
- 54:35SPEAKER_05: I I get that, yeah.
- 54:36SPEAKER_05: I get that, but still it's like, yeah.
- 54:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I yeah, but um, but yeah, this this thing that I I did the the twist at the end is what made me think, oh, I I quite like that film because it's doing this whole thing with this Sam Gold name, yeah, which essentially works as a a bit of a red herring.
- 54:53SPEAKER_05: Is that the right word?
- 54:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, it's a red herring.
- 54:55SPEAKER_05: Like a fake thing you're meant to, yeah.
- 54:57SPEAKER_05: Um or a MacGuffin.
- 55:00SPEAKER_05: That's another one.
- 55:01SPEAKER_05: A MacGuffin is no, a McGuffin is a when you think it's something.
- 55:05SPEAKER_05: When you think you're following something and it's not, it's something else.
- 55:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:09SPEAKER_05: So that might be more what it is.
- 55:11SPEAKER_05: I think it's kind of both.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you think you're following Sam Gold, but you but in re in reality, everyone is essentially the same Sam Gold.
- 55:20SPEAKER_05: So so when I was first watching it, I was thinking, alright, there's gonna be a big twist here, and Jason Statham is Sam Gold, and he's like mentally ill or something.
- 55:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I thought that was fight club type.
- 55:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I thought something like that's coming, and then that doesn't happen.
- 55:34SPEAKER_05: Instead, you find out his two friends have been his friends all along, and I did like the visual thing of him suddenly losing at chess as well.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:44SPEAKER_05: Just that that little twist.
- 55:45SPEAKER_05: I I like that a lot of the time.
- 55:48SPEAKER_00: That was interesting, yeah.
- 55:50SPEAKER_00: I I I just had a feeling that was coming, that the him losing at chess at one point, because it's just like he's he's been building it, building it, and building it.
- 55:58SPEAKER_00: And he's getting he looks like he's getting better every time, and under 50,000 is getting fed up with it.
- 56:02SPEAKER_00: I just had a feeling that he was gonna lose it at some point.
- 56:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, fair enough.
- 56:05SPEAKER_05: I um when I first saw it, I think I was so um distracted by the Sam Gold stuff, yeah, I hadn't thought about the chess.
- 56:15SPEAKER_00: But also, don't forget, I was sitting there right making notes about everything.
- 56:17SPEAKER_05: So I was like, also this this is the second time you've seen it, right?
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'd seen yeah, that's a good point.
- 56:23SPEAKER_00: I'd say I'd seen it when it came out 15 years ago and then I hadn't seen it since then.
- 56:27SPEAKER_05: But and so I think from what I I don't know this for sure, but what this one YouTube video is saying is that the ending was not that clear the first time round.
- 56:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 56:37SPEAKER_05: And if that was the case, then I can understand people being angry.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: I'm just trying to see if I wrote down if anything changes.
- 56:45SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 56:47SPEAKER_00: Is there the bit did you ha do you remember the bit of the end where he goes to Ray Rayota and Rayota has the niece?
- 56:56SPEAKER_05: No.
- 56:57SPEAKER_00: So that that's the very end.
- 57:00SPEAKER_05: No.
- 57:03SPEAKER_05: They removed something else as well.
- 57:05SPEAKER_05: They there was a whole thing about Jason Statham's family, apparently.
- 57:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, I don't know, that wasn't it.
- 57:10SPEAKER_00: Which took out.
- 57:12SPEAKER_00: There there is stuff with his brother and his niece.
- 57:15unknown: Okay.
- 57:16SPEAKER_05: That's what you mean.
- 57:17SPEAKER_05: But yeah, apparently there was more, and they just removed it and they moved the order around of stuff.
- 57:22SPEAKER_05: Because there's a UK version, then there was a US release, and there's even like uh some like Scandinavian versions.
- 57:29SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 57:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so yeah, that's a shame, isn't it?
- 57:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 57:33SPEAKER_05: When that happens.
- 57:34SPEAKER_00: But wait, so you said Mark Strong's character is like the perfect shot and everything, and you hate you didn't like that.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: But yeah.
- 57:40SPEAKER_00: So there's that's when that's when the whole knee stuff gets important, though, because he's protecting the knees.
- 57:47SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 57:48SPEAKER_05: I didn't like that.
- 57:48SPEAKER_05: I don't okay.
- 57:49SPEAKER_05: I personally So she's still in it then.
- 57:51SPEAKER_05: Uh okay.
- 57:52SPEAKER_05: So she's in that bit.
- 57:54SPEAKER_05: I think there was more scenes with her also that got taken out.
- 57:57SPEAKER_05: I don't like that bit because I don't like when films do that thing of uh like using a child.
- 58:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:04SPEAKER_05: A child could get killed here.
- 58:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:06SPEAKER_05: And then so that makes the scene more exciting because it's like, oh, Mark Strong's amazing for killing all these guys.
- 58:12SPEAKER_05: Do you know what I mean?
- 58:13SPEAKER_00: I don't like the whole perfection as well.
- 58:16SPEAKER_00: I hate I don't like that when someone's so good at like they can just they can find them anywhere.
- 58:22SPEAKER_00: I just I get a little bit annoyed about that.
- 58:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I don't like when something like that is you it's like it's a bit like when a stand-up comedian does a sad show.
- 58:31SPEAKER_05: It's like manipulating your emotions.
- 58:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 58:33SPEAKER_05: Do you know what I mean?
- 58:34SPEAKER_05: Um, so like you've got a child there, and then suddenly whatever happens in this scene now, Mark Strong's defending a child, so it's cool.
- 58:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:41SPEAKER_05: And it's like he can he can violently kill these men, and it's like, yeah, this is brilliant.
- 58:46SPEAKER_05: I'd I'd yeah, stuff like that annoys me a bit, and just the use of a child at all in a gangster film.
- 58:53SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's there was no need for her in that film.
- 58:55SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, so there's a scene at the end, the very end, which is when Jason Statham goes to meet uh Ray Leota again because Rayota's kidnapped the child.
- 59:08SPEAKER_00: Uh and so he's but then you then you cut to it cuts to Ray Leota and realizes like crying again on the inside, but then it cuts back and he's fine, it just goes back and forth between him crying and like showing his which is I thought that was quite good.
- 59:24SPEAKER_00: But then uh he looks at Jason Statham and Jason Statham's got a big smile on his face and it's like pretty weird.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: And then Radiota goes from holding the gun to the child to holding the gun to himself, and then he shoots himself, and then that's the end.
- 59:43SPEAKER_05: Hold on, is that the last shot of the film?
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: That's the last shot of the film.
- 59:46SPEAKER_05: Ah.
- 59:48SPEAKER_05: No.
- 59:49SPEAKER_05: The version I saw, that's not the last shot of the film.
- 59:52SPEAKER_00: See, it's different, it changes it.
- 59:54SPEAKER_05: The last shot was when they do the chess.
- 59:56SPEAKER_00: I which I think it could have ended there.
- 59:58SPEAKER_05: And it cuts out there.
- 59:59SPEAKER_05: I'm sure that's what I've seen.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_00: That's where it could have ended, it should probably should have ended.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_05: And that's that's why I liked it.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_05: Because it's all this butt stuff's been happening, and then he beats him at chess.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_05: And then you get that thing where they've all realize he realizes who they are.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_05: And that's the end of the film.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think cutting out that whole subplot of kidnapping the girl, him going to meet him again one final time in the radio shooting himself, and it ended like but it's also like ambiguous because you don't see him actually shoot himself, you just hear the gunshot.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, forget that.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_05: That's too much.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_05: So I don't even know.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_05: I'm totally lost now.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_05: I don't know what the cinematic one was.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_00: I don't know which version I watched.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_00: I have no idea now.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_05: You might it sounds like an extended cut.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_05: It sounds like you watched it watch the director's cut, because usually they add stuff in, don't they?
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna look at Amazon.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_05: It doesn't I are you gonna look it up?
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll click on Amazon quickly and see what I watched.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_05: Um versions of movie revolver.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_05: I'll check if that comes up with anything.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_05: Alternate versions.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_05: So there's alternate versions.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_05: So there is a new 2007 director's cut of the movie in the in the movie in Scandinavia, 15 minutes shorter than the original cut.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_05: So how long is the uh Amazon Prime one?
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: One hour fifty-four.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_05: Uh how what's one hour fifty sixty?
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_00: That's um So it's uh hundred and uh fourteen.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so you've watched the that's the normal cut.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_05: The Scandinavia cut is 101 minutes.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_05: After a less oh, this is interesting.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_05: This is perfect.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_05: After after a less than successful festival and UK theatrical run, the film was re-cut for its North American release.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_05: In the reworked version, the film is ten minutes shorter.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_05: The scenes are arranged differently, some scenes are removed, some added.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_05: The film ends at a different point.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_00: That's how have you seen that version?
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_05: And there are a torrent, basically.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_05: And there are clips of the psychologist talking about the ID during the end credits.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_05: The psychologists and philosophers at the end of the pre-cut.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_05: Okay, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_05: Um, I think I might have got it on a dodgy download and not the library.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_05: I can't, it was a long time ago.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_05: Um, yes, so this is one of the key issues.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_05: So I like this film because I partly because I saw this where they play chess and it's a lovely ending.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_00: So I wonder if the American reaction was a lot better then.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_05: I have seen both cuts as well.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_05: Because I remember watching it again and being really confused and thinking that maybe I I I genuinely thought maybe that I I like um just stopped watching the film and I turned it off.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_05: I thought, did I just forget this bit?
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_05: Which honestly, it's so the original cut is is not very good because the ending is stupid.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the it's like it doesn't end well, which is why I was saying to you, I don't like the ending.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_00: And then but I like and I was like, and I was like, the ending's great.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_00: What's he talking about?
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_00: I like that bit.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_00: I don't like the ending.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_00: I just it just seems like another unnecessarily scene at the end.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_00: It just feels unnecessary.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't like that subplot.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_05: The film is done at that point, and it's it's wrapped up quite nicely.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_05: Again, there's this plot holes, but you know, it happens, doesn't it?
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_05: Um well, what uh yeah.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's go over like let's go over some other points then.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_00: So uh I'm gonna read some bad reviews of it.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_05: Yes, please do.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna go off of this.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_00: Uh someone said it's about as about as compelling a brief for Kabbalah as Battlefield Earth was for Scientology, which looks quite funny.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_05: Haven't seen that.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_00: Battlefield Earth's terrible, it's worked way worse than this.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_00: Um said its central chess game conceit is over is overconvu convoluted and infuriating, finally sliding into rincible into risable silliness in the last 20 minutes.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_00: Um Guy Richie's greasy little noir revolver is good grindhouse fun until the until a last act that's like a meeting of a psychoanalyst convention.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_00: Which does so interesting.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_00: I I kind of agree with that last one.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_00: That I think it's it's fun until that last act.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_05: Where it's like this is the thing as well though with films, like um I think it does depend at what point in in your life you watch it.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_05: And if I watched Revolver today for the first time, whatever cut, I might have just thought this is a load of shit.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but I saw it, I was about I was about 18 or 19 years old, and I I just took a chance on it.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_05: I didn't I also I didn't know anything about it.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there was no hype for me, there was no bad reviews or good reviews.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_05: I just thought, oh guy Ritchie, I know him.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_05: And I just watched it, and the main thing for me was the twist at the end.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I thought it's so cool that those two old white guys are not those people at all.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and they have been helping him the whole time, and I thought that fits together nicely.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_05: That was my main thing.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_05: I wasn't too fussed about the rest of it.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_05: Um I thought Ray Lyot is alright in it.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_05: I quite like him in it.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_00: I yeah, I don't have a problem with him in it.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_05: I I like him as an actor.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_00: Um I have an i I just have an issue with like I guess it's like the cutting back and forth between I now I know the purpose of it, it kind of works, but I don't I don't know that it's entirely I don't know if it entirely works.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_00: The whole cutting back and forth between uh the person and then the ego inside.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_05: And like you see the ego and it's like I think he overdoes it definitely.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_00: Uh Radiota or the uh or the whole thing?
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_05: All of that stuff.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_05: Like even the internal voice in Jason Statham's head could have been less of it.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_05: And again, I'm starting to wonder, I think I think the two versions are very different.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_00: They are they do sound very different.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_05: Because I I I'm sure I've seen both because I'm I'm certain when I think back now, I watched it the first time when I was at uni and I thought I loved this, and then and I don't get why everyone hates it.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_05: And then I watched it again later and it did have that weird ending.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_05: And I did find it more annoying generally.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_05: And I think there was too there was too much of the pretentious stuff in it.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_05: And the bad ending.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_05: The cut I saw, I saw the like good Scandinavian cut or whatever.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_00: You saw the cut with like 20 minutes taken out and all the worst shots.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_05: That makes sense.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_00: That does sound like it works better.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_05: Well, so I'm not actually defending a horrible film like I thought I was.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_05: I'm defending the good version of it.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_00: Potentially, but potentially.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_05: No, no, I'm sure.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_05: Look, people can still hate the cut version.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_05: I'm not saying they have to like it, you know.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_05: But I I think it deserves more credit, and I don't think it deserves the hate.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so what is it that you love about the film then?
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_00: What makes it a good film in your mind?
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_05: Um I like I do like how it's shot.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_05: I like the pace of it.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_05: The cut I've seen.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_05: I like the pace of the film.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_05: I like that he's trying to do something interesting, to be fair.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_05: I do think he overdoes it, but I appreciate that he's trying to do something more than a gangster film.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_05: You know, I think fair enough.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_05: Um I like, like I said, I really love the twist at the end.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_05: Um what else?
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_05: I think Jason Slatham is good in the film.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_05: Um I think Ray I think most of the performances are pretty good.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_05: I think Rayleigh Otto is good in it.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_05: Um I don't love Mark Strong in it that much because of the whole that his character really.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_05: Um and yeah, like I said, there are things I don't like.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_05: Uh for me, I think the twist is excellent.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_05: I think it's a really good idea the way they execute it.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_05: And I the scene when they do and when they're playing the chess and he beats him, and you see Jason Slatham's face realizing it, it's cut together quite nicely.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_05: It's quick.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_05: That's what I liked about it.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_05: And when you're watching it, you're like, oh, you know.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_05: Um I'd say that's pretty much everything.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_05: And I and yeah, I mean, that's why.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_05: So when you asked me to do this, I could have picked you you've got loads of interesting films on the list you sent over.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was just a random list of it.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, no, fine.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_05: But I thought this is something that never really gets talked about.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_00: No, I thought it was a that's why I was like, oh yeah, please do it, because it's like an interesting choice.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_05: And it's I think the criticism has been is been way too harsh.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_05: Um, I think it's more aimed at Guy Ritchie as a person.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I think that's unfair.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_05: Like, and also like he's not a bad guy.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_05: Like, I I understand, like, uh you know, like, okay, again, I keep to bringing up stand-up comedy reviews because that's like my world, basically.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_05: But I get when a comedian gets a bad review because they're a dodgy guy with some allegations and stuff around.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_05: Do you know what I mean?
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_05: I get that, but Guy Ritchie is not, as far as I know, he's not a bad person, is he?
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_05: He just he just likes gangster stuff, and that's what he wants to do.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_00: Just his world.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's like give him a break, I think.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_00: Everyone has their like style, and I think that's just his style.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's far worst filmmakers out there.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, and then you know, um, and like uh he's gone on to do stuff like Sherlock Holmes.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_00: Sherlock Holmes is great, I don't know.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's do he's done well, you know.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_05: Aladdin was always gonna be hard, yeah, to be fair.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_00: I think he was I think he was missed not miscast, might he was the wrong hire for that.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_05: But I I don't know, to be honest, like yeah, I I don't like the look of it, I've not seen it, but how do you do Aladdin?
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_05: It's such a classic.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, even even Lion King was a disaster.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I'm not a huge fan of like these live action remakes.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_05: They're not working, are they generally?
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_05: I mean, and also like yeah, I've seen a bit of Lion King, it just it's it's shot for shot as well, isn't it?
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_05: Uh I've heard it's it's pretty much more or less shot for shot, I've heard.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_05: And the the cat animals don't have any expressions.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's I don't see the point of them.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_00: It doesn't work.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_05: No.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_05: No, so I think that yeah, Aladdin was always going to be a challenge.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_05: Let me just get up while we're still talking about him.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_05: Let me have a look at his IMDB quickly, and let's just see what else he's done.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_00: Dude, Guy Richards.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I've kind of lost track um of what he's been up to, to be honest.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_00: But um did the gentleman as well recently.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_05: I don't hate the guy.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_05: Um which one is the gentleman?
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_00: It's the one that just came out uh at the start of the year.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's the highest.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_05: I'm just gonna check that.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_00: His highest rated film is The Gentleman.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_05: No.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_05: See, this is the thing.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_05: Rotten Tomatoes, the gentleman.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_05: I am gonna watch this actually.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_05: I would like to see it.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_05: Hold on, his highest-rated film is 75%, is that it?
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm thinking.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_00: Even actually, Lockstock and Lockstock's 275% as well, so he's tied with that.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_00: And then Snatch is 73.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_00: I thought Snatch was better.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_05: Oh come on, Snatch is alright.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_05: I get like it's a silly film, but it's good.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_00: I'm surprised it's only 73 actually.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_05: But the audience score is 93.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_05: Um we had that with last Christmas as well, where the main tomato me tomatometer whatever review was low, but the audience score was like near 100.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_00: Um they were raving about your performance in it.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's what did it.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_05: So it's so embarrassing, but yeah, that's what he keeps talking about.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_05: So I'll just go through his films very quickly.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_05: So I'm not with the short films.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_05: Lockstone and two smoking barrels, 98.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_05: Um, and then okay, that's that's shorts.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_05: He wrote the screenplay, it says, for swept away.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_05: Did he not direct it?
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_00: No, he directed it as well.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_05: Then he did Revolver.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_05: Wow, I'm gonna watch that.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_05: Then he did I can't wait.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_05: I honestly I'm excited.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_05: And then he did Revolver 2005, then Rock and Roller, 2008.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_05: I hate that film.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_05: Then The Man from Uncle, which I've seen half of, and that looks pretty fun.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_00: Have you seen that?
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_00: Uh no, I haven't seen it.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, sorry, I should have been looking on here.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_05: Revolver 15, rock and roller, 60% for rock and roller.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_05: I was waiting for you to say that.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_00: I saw it on there.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_05: That's ridiculous.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_05: That's oh wow, look at the box office.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_05: So revolver's box office, 42.3 Oh, that's 42.3,000 pounds.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_00: Well, that can't be right.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_00: That must be America.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_00: That can't be like worldwide.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_05: Nah, I don't know.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_05: I don't know how accurate that is.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_05: And then rock and roller got 5.7 million.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_00: That doesn't seem right.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_05: I never know how accurate these are.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_05: And then Sherlock Holmes 208 million.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, fair enough.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_05: So he went from rock and roller, then he did Sherlock Holmes, and that was good.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_05: And then he directed Lobo.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_05: Is that a short film?
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_05: I'm not sure what that is.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_00: It's got no score.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: Man from Uncle.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_05: Man from Uncle got 67%.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna actually I'm gonna watch that because I've seen half of it.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_05: Oh, I saw it on a flight, and I thought it looked pretty fun, yeah.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_05: King Arthur did badly.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that wasn't good.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_05: Aladdin 57%, and then the gentleman is 75%.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_00: I feel I feel like he did King Arthur and Aladdin just to be able to do the gentleman.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it could well be.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_05: Like, yeah, I can imagine him not wanting to do Aladdin, but you get offered that and you can't turn that down, can you?
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_00: It's like you do the do Aladdin, you can do the gentleman.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm gonna watch yeah, The Gentleman.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_05: I've I've heard it's quite an annoying film, but I do want to watch it.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_05: That's quite funny.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_05: I do, you know what, to his credit though, his films, like like I said before, they're not boring.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_00: No, they're never boring.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_00: I'll give him that.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_05: And that is something because, you know.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_05: Um, like even like um, I watched um, you know, oh what's it called again?
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_05: Um What's the Tarantino one?
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_05: Not Tarantino fucking hell.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_05: Mine's completely fried.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_05: What's the um uh what's the one we we mentioned uh The Irishman?
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah yeah.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_05: Um like that film, I I enjoyed it, but it's long and parts of it are boring.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_05: In my opinion.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_00: Did you not find any of it boring?
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_00: I I didn't, but I I really got into the story of it, so like and I saw the I saw the purpose of the long, slow scenes.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_00: So I'd like I I got why he was doing that, so I didn't find it boring at the time.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_00: I know a lot of people do find it boring though and didn't connect with it.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_05: I didn't love the pacing of it that much.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I get that, I get that.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_05: But whereas Guy Richie's films they do tend to move along quick.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think this week I'm just gonna watch his films I haven't seen.
- 1:14:27SPEAKER_05: Like um, I do enjoy doing it.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_05: I mean, something that um uh Nick Helm, comedian, something he's got me into is watching really bad comedies.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_05: Like um he talked about oh, you know about it.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_05: Uh what's it called again?
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_05: Master of Disguise.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_00: Master of Disguise, yeah.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_05: Incredible, man.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_05: It's so bad.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_05: It's about an hour long.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_00: I can't believe how short it is, yeah.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_00: I was pretty surprised when you said that.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_05: The starting titles are really long, and then the end credits are uh again really long.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_05: And you realise this is about an hour and five minutes have gone, and there's been filler in the film, like it's not all.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like a very basic sketch idea that he's dragged out into a film.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_05: And then he made me watch um Carrot Top's film.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, you watched it?
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, have you seen it?
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_05: No.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_05: It's called Chairman of the Board.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, incredible.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_05: It's just so bad.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_05: I'd say Master of Disguise is worse though.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_05: Oh, really?
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_05: Um especially because you know how talented Thingy is.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_05: What's he called?
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_00: Dana Carve.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_05: Dana Carvey.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_05: Like, you know, he's a very he's a very funny guy.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_00: And that essentially ended his career.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_00: But he hasn't done anything since.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_05: No, not anything major, is he?
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_00: He doesn't act anymore.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_00: So interesting.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_05: Anyway, revolver though.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, sorry.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah, so let's talk about let's move on from revolver actually.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about uh the fight let's do the final part, which is I want to know uh a movie that's rated well that you think is actually bad.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_05: Baby Driver.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_05: That really wound me up.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_05: Do you like it?
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_00: I love Baby Driver.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_05: I do not like it at all.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_05: I really didn't.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_05: I'll tell you what, okay, there's two key points that I didn't like.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_05: I think it was cynical, a couple of things.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_05: Um, there's something with the ending I didn't like, but I don't need to talk about that.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_05: One thing was that the boy lives with a blind black man that he helps out.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_05: And I felt like there was no need for it.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_05: And it was just that it was almost cheating.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_05: It was just like, oh, look, he's a really nice boy, he knows sign language.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_05: And it's like Yeah, I get I get that.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_05: So I'm meant to like love him more now.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_05: There is a crucial bit that really wound me up.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_05: Oh, it's not that crucial, but so there's again, this isn't really a spoiler.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_05: There's a man as John Hamm and this woman, who are like two of the baddies, right?
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_05: Um just before they get killed, uh, so they don't they don't really do much in the film, they're not that interesting.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_05: Just before, just before they die, just before they get shot, there's a scene in the car where they're just talking, and he says something to her like, Oh, who is your favorite guy that I killed, baby?
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_05: And she said, No, no, no, it's it's something, some conversation like that.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and um, and she says something, or one of them says, Oh, what about the guy that just looked at you wrong?
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_05: So now you know that he's just killed someone because they looked at him wrong, right?
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_05: So suddenly he's really evil, and then in the next scene he gets shot by the do you know what I mean?
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, right, I see what you're saying.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_00: So, like in the whole lead up to it, he's not you're not seeing him that way, then suddenly like that's way.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_00: So, like a stat uh yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_05: From what I remember, he seems alright.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_05: He's he's a villain, but he doesn't seem too much.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_05: They rob banks, in it.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_05: They ro they rob banks or whatever, fine, that's what they do.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_05: And then suddenly, oh, who was your favorite guy that I killed?
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_05: And it's like the guy that looked at you wrong.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_05: It's something like that.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_05: It's it's it's I've not got it perfectly right.
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I thought, right, that's a weird thing to say.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_05: And then the next scene, they're both getting shot.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I have also maybe because it's a bit weird because she's like kind of a like a little lady sort of getting shot loads by the police.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_05: I think maybe it's he wanted to just set that up with her being evil as well.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, probably.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_05: Um, and there's the whole thing about the court case when he gets arrested, and then the the the the guy he lives with doing sign language saying he's a good kid, and I just thought this is I don't like this.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_00: Fair enough.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I get that.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_05: It's just I just I don't like when film when I feel that films are being cynical.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've noticed like there's a theme that I've noticed with you, and it's like you don't like you don't like when someone's being exploited in a in a scene.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_00: And you don't like um oh, what was the other thing?
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_00: I forgot what the other thing was, but there's something something else I noticed.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_05: So it's yeah, it's it's basically it's it's manipulating your emotions.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_05: And it's the thing isn't speaking for itself.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_05: Do you know what I mean?
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_05: It's like when um that's why I keep coming back to stand-up comedy.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_05: I've seen comedians do shows that have that have decent.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_05: I I don't mean Nanette, by the way.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_05: I think that's a great show.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_05: I don't mean that.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_05: I mean after no, honestly, I don't.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_05: After that, loads of comedians basically started copying her.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's what happened.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_05: The next Edinburgh, I was up, and yeah, basically these these shows were now just decent jokes, good good jokes, and then about 45 minutes in or whatever, and I'm suffering with depression.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_05: That's the twist.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_05: And then it's like, or I saw another one, oh I need to be careful.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_05: I saw another one where it was like I saw another one where it was like, and the reason I'm making these silly jokes is because of my this breakdown I had.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it's like, okay, so I have to like it more now.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_05: Do you know what I mean?
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_05: And films, yeah, yeah, and films quite often do that as well.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_05: Like, um, they'll use a theme, whether it's even if it's um yeah, like like murder or or like a child, a child's in danger, or um, or someone.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_05: Oh, here's another film that annoyed me.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_05: Oh, oh, what's it called?
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_05: It's got um um who's okay, it's got Gerald Butler in it.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, uh Law Abiding Citizen.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_05: Law abiding citizen.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_05: Now, something that happens in that which really annoyed me, right at the beginning, beginning of the film, yeah, there's a disgusting, the most horrible kind of murder and and rape at the start, right?
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then and then it's like okay, well, whatever happens now, the revenge he gets is great.
- 1:20:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's my opinion of that one as well.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and Tarantino does that a bit as well sometimes, but he does it better, to be fair.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_00: Kind of I'm not a huge fan of that stuff when he does it either.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_05: No, but he's better at doing it, yeah.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_05: But yeah, I hate when a film is like they've shown you the most horrible, disgusting thing like possible, and you have to see it all as well.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_05: Like it's like there's no need for it.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_05: So then now you're thinking, okay, I want Gerald Butler to kill these people, yeah.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_05: Very violently.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_00: This actually came up in uh when we were discussing Showgirls as well, because there's a very violent, disgusting scene in that, and it has no it doesn't have uh it has purpose, but it doesn't need to be quite as graphic and extreme, and we see everything, and it's just yeah, it's awful, and it feels kind of out of place.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_05: So no, it doesn't need to happen.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_05: Like, I mean, in other cases, I just remembered a film where there's some violence in it, where a child dies in it, but like one of my favourite films, I think, In Bruges.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_05: Have you seen that?
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_05: Now at the start of that, you do get the boy that gets shot at the start, but it's not dwelled on too much, it's not like a really long scene, and it's very important because it shows you how sad yeah the main character is, how much it affects him, because he's basically depressed, yeah, because it's happened.
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_05: He doesn't want to, he's like suicidal, isn't he?
- 1:22:01SPEAKER_05: Where see, I think there it makes sense.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_00: It serves a purpose there as opposed to like be as opposed to like having a uh like giving you some kind of manipulative emotional feeling.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_05: It's it's not a revenge fantasy, yeah.
- 1:22:14SPEAKER_05: It's not him trying to go out shooting loads of people because a child died.
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's him trying to live with himself, yeah, and much more.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_05: But yeah, it just sometimes that gets to me in films.
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I get it.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_05: Um and but I don't I don't yeah, it's just Baby Driver has good stuff in it.
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_05: It's it's a fun film, but it's just these things just like I'm just like I'm I'm annoyed now when I'm watching it.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_00: Uh so do you want to do uh any of your plugs?
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_00: How can we find you?
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_05: Yes, so my on my social media I'm Zapphokakes, Z A F A R Cakes on most things.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_05: My most thing, my most important thing I'd like to plug right now is my Twitch channel, because that's the thing I'm working on the most.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_05: That is also it's twitch.tv slash Zapphokakes, where I play a football manager in a weird sort of world I've created, along with uh the classic game Pro Evolution Soccer 5 from 2005.
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_05: It's not for sports fans or football fans, it's very silly.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_05: It's very funny.
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_05: You're one of my chair appreciate it.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_05: Um it's uh yeah, it's it's like a very it's basically an improvised, interactive live comedy show, is what I'd say it is.
- 1:23:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, that's it.
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_05: Thanks very much for having me.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thanks for being up.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_00: What about your uh your acting school?
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_00: Do you want to talk about that?
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_05: Oh, I also have a series on YouTube where I play an acting coach uh who's basically a horrible guy, and I train actors up, and I'm not very good at acting myself within the thing.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_05: Oh, and real life, I'm not that good.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_05: But um that's yeah, that's more of a chat show type spoof.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_05: Like it's a bit I'd say that that is like inside the actors studio meets between two fans.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I've had some great guests.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_05: All of my guests have been amazing.
- 1:23:59SPEAKER_05: Josie Long, Suze Kempner, Ian Lee, people like that.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_05: Um Nick Samson, Ken Cheng.
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_05: I might as well say all I like I said three out of five.
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_00: Because when you get to three, you gotta name them all.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_05: That's just out of order, isn't it?
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_05: No, but they're all honestly, they're all amaz very funny people.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_05: I'm really proud of those as well.
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_05: If you want to find me on YouTube.
- 1:24:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:21SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah.
- 1:24:22SPEAKER_00: Thanks for being on.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_00: It was very interesting.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_00: I think you gave a lot of information about Revolver.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_00: I also didn't realise.
- 1:24:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_05: Um, and I do think I yeah, I do think it's a film that is worth seeing, and but make sure you watch the right cut.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, watch the American cut, apparently.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_05: I think that's the one.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_05: It has to be shorter, it has to be the oh I've lost.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_00: Don't watch the Amazon Prime one if you are in England.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_05: That's spot on.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_05: Don't watch Amazon Prime.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_05: Get hold of the other one.
- 1:24:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's definitely much better.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_00: That's the end of the podcast.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_00: You can find me on Twitter for the username at YCove or at Yanis Cove on Instagram.
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_00: Please remember to rate and review us on iTunes if you enjoyed this, so I can end up making more.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_00: And I'll see you next week for more movies that critics got wrong.
