- 2:12Speaker 3: McCuskey, Morning Dave Mornings, Sir, How are you? I am fine.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I just like the way your your face lights up
- 2:18Speaker 3: when I say big lely piggy wiggly.
- 2:20Speaker 4: You enjoy that?
- 2:21Speaker 3: For summer?
- 2:21Speaker 7: The number one uh ad read in probably all of
- 2:25Speaker 7: American radio.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Yeah, big lee pigly wiggly.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Yeah it's great.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Yeah, that's perfect. Yes, yeah, we love those folks over there,
- 2:33Speaker 3: and I've learned of perfect saying big lee pigly wiggly.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Yes, that's correct. Everyone should have a bigley pickley wiggly.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Do you see how well I said that?
- 2:40Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 2:40Speaker 4: I'm auditioning.
- 2:41Speaker 3: I mean, you know, if this political thing doesn't work out,
- 2:44Speaker 3: maybe you could take over this show. Others have done it.
- 2:46Speaker 3: It has happened before, Others have done it and done
- 2:48Speaker 3: it quite well. You ever thought about doing a podcast
- 2:51Speaker 3: because that seems to be what everybody does these days?
- 2:53Speaker 4: No, I haven't really. I mean I think you'd be
- 2:58Speaker 4: good at that. JB.
- 2:59Speaker 7: I think I could probably do it, but I think
- 3:02Speaker 7: I don't have a lot of free time to be
- 3:04Speaker 7: doing long form what do you.
- 3:06Speaker 3: But if you were not tied up in this whole
- 3:09Speaker 3: political thing, then you could do that.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Yeah, I think it would be super fun.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Uh huh, I think it would be fun.
- 3:16Speaker 7: I think I probably could do it, but right now
- 3:19Speaker 7: my focus is somewhere else.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Yeah, your focus has been in a lot of places.
- 3:23Speaker 3: First of all, I'm going to say I heard the
- 3:25Speaker 3: discussion that you had on talk line yesterday. I was
- 3:28Speaker 3: listen to do it in my office when you were
- 3:30Speaker 3: on with Wilson and Meadows yesterday, And in course you
- 3:32Speaker 3: came on to talk about some recent decisions, which we're
- 3:33Speaker 3: going to get to as it pertains to the Attorney
- 3:36Speaker 3: General's office. But I did think it was an interesting
- 3:39Speaker 3: discussion on the whole Charlie Kirk thing. And I'm going
- 3:42Speaker 3: to talk about this a little bit later on the
- 3:43Speaker 3: lead story this morning. Wv Metronews dot com. They had
- 3:46Speaker 3: a vigil held on the WVU campus for Charlie Kirk
- 3:50Speaker 3: last night, and they knew it was going to be big.
- 3:52Speaker 3: They had no idea. University officials, even the folks from
- 3:56Speaker 3: turning point, which was his organization that are quoted in
- 4:00Speaker 3: the story said we had no idea it would be
- 4:02Speaker 3: this big and that this many people would show up.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yeah, and there's another one on Thursday at the state Capitol.
- 4:08Speaker 7: The governor and the Executive Committee here in Kannall County
- 4:12Speaker 7: or hosting one at the Capitol. So everybody who wants
- 4:15Speaker 7: to come out and pay their respects to a great
- 4:17Speaker 7: man and celebrate the ideals of free speech, I think
- 4:24Speaker 7: should try to get there.
- 4:26Speaker 3: That was one of my takeaways. I'mst spend a whole
- 4:30Speaker 3: lot of time on this because we get other things
- 4:31Speaker 3: to get to. That's one of the takeaways that I
- 4:33Speaker 3: took from the whole thing. And look, I was not
- 4:36Speaker 3: as in tune with Charlie Kirk as what a lot
- 4:38Speaker 3: of younger people were, because quite frankly, he wasn't as
- 4:41Speaker 3: we used the term in broadcasting. He wasn't in my demo,
- 4:45Speaker 3: you know, I mean, he appealed. He was early thirties guy.
- 4:47Speaker 3: That's who his audience was. But I do know of
- 4:50Speaker 3: the numbers that he had as far as his podcast
- 4:54Speaker 3: and the appearances that he made on television and the
- 4:57Speaker 3: speaking engagements and things of that nature. But you know,
- 5:02Speaker 3: and you guys, I think summed it up perfectly yesterday.
- 5:05Speaker 3: The ability to have free speech and to be able
- 5:09Speaker 3: to just speak about things that maybe and listen to,
- 5:14Speaker 3: or at least tolerate things that you don't necessary not
- 5:19Speaker 3: you personally, but you don't necessarily agree with, is eroding
- 5:25Speaker 3: evermore every day.
- 5:26Speaker 7: Yeah, And I think the point that you made about
- 5:29Speaker 7: you not being in his demo is an important one.
- 5:31Speaker 7: I think he made a very intentional choice to focus
- 5:36Speaker 7: his energy on the people who were being the most
- 5:38Speaker 7: affected by social media. And I think his thought process,
- 5:43Speaker 7: which has proved to be correct, is that if we
- 5:47Speaker 7: can keep young people from falling into these rabbit holes,
- 5:52Speaker 7: we can turn them into a new generation of people
- 5:55Speaker 7: who are tolerant of other people's views without sacrificing their own.
- 6:00Speaker 7: And I think that's that's really the key point is
- 6:03Speaker 7: that there are ways to express your opinion that enable
- 6:09Speaker 7: you to stay true to what your beliefs are, and
- 6:11Speaker 7: you don't have to sacrifice them in order to understand
- 6:14Speaker 7: that other people disagree with you.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, And I agree with that, you know, And
- 6:20Speaker 3: we we seem to have gotten, you know, away from that.
- 6:23Speaker 3: And I was reading last night, doing a little bit
- 6:25Speaker 3: of reading on on Charlie Kirk, and I'm sorry, I'm
- 6:30Speaker 3: not on Charlie Kirk, on the Assassin, Charlie Kirk, the
- 6:34Speaker 3: gentleman and alleged he alleged he was somebody who pretty much,
- 6:40Speaker 3: from what I understand, I mean this, the kid had
- 6:42Speaker 3: everything going for him. At one point thirty four act
- 6:46Speaker 3: full ride to Utah State University lasted one semester, was
- 6:49Speaker 3: in an apprenticeship program for an electrical type program, which
- 6:53Speaker 3: is great, but just became totally immersed uh. And it
- 6:58Speaker 3: actually happened before he became political. He lived his entire
- 7:01Speaker 3: life pretty much online. Therein lies a problem with a
- 7:06Speaker 3: lot of people, and it's and it's an issue. And
- 7:09Speaker 3: I'm not going to say, JB it's an issue with
- 7:11Speaker 3: a lot of younger people, because it is. It's also
- 7:13Speaker 3: an issue with a lot of older people too. You know,
- 7:16Speaker 3: every now and then, put the phone down, touch some grass.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I think is the current terminology that people like. That
- 7:22Speaker 3: was Charlie's phrase. Yeah, yeah, oh was I didn't know
- 7:24Speaker 3: it was his phrase.
- 7:25Speaker 4: That's why everybody's using it these days.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I had no idea. I had no idea and his.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Point is correct.
- 7:29Speaker 7: There's a humanity in actual interaction, and there's an inhumanity
- 7:33Speaker 7: in digital interaction. Right, And it's very, very easy to
- 7:36Speaker 7: call somebody a fascist or a bigot, or a Nazi
- 7:39Speaker 7: or a racist or any of these other things that
- 7:41Speaker 7: people untruly and unfairly said about Charlie when you've never
- 7:47Speaker 7: actually talked to him.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, I agree with that.
- 7:50Speaker 7: And he gave thousands upon thousands, if not millions, of
- 7:53Speaker 7: people the opportunity to talk to him. And I don't
- 7:57Speaker 7: know that I've ever seen anybody else under take a
- 8:00Speaker 7: mission of that scope.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Talking to Attorney General jam McCuskey. Now, let's go to sports.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Let's go to sports. Here's a transition time after the
- 8:08Speaker 3: sports will go to weather. But you're officely been involved
- 8:12Speaker 3: in a lot of sports here lately. But I like sports.
- 8:17Speaker 3: I love sports. I absolutely love sports. Remember I almost
- 8:19Speaker 3: died from it Sunday, that's I heard if you if
- 8:22Speaker 3: you followed me on Twitter, yeah, I almost.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Your heart rate monitor was placed on to the internet for.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I'm still still living that down. But no, I did
- 8:30Speaker 3: not almost die. But anyway, uh, you you're you followed
- 8:35Speaker 3: the opening brief with the US Supreme Court defending the
- 8:37Speaker 3: Save Women's Sports Act. Talk about that.
- 8:39Speaker 7: Yeah, So, the West Virginia Legislature passed the Save Women's
- 8:42Speaker 7: Sports Act a couple of years ago, and the idea
- 8:45Speaker 7: behind the the Act is that biological males should not
- 8:48Speaker 7: be playing sports against biological females. And that makes sense.
- 8:52Speaker 7: And the reason that that makes sense is that we
- 8:54Speaker 7: have laws in this country, specifically titled nine, which were
- 8:59Speaker 7: designed to create a level playing field for women to
- 9:03Speaker 7: play sports. And there are just inherent physical differences between.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Men and women.
- 9:08Speaker 7: And in order for those playing fields and for the
- 9:10Speaker 7: ideals of Title nine to be successful, we have to
- 9:14Speaker 7: ensure that women are playing against people that have similar
- 9:19Speaker 7: biological characteristics. That's what this bill seeks to do. That's
- 9:22Speaker 7: why we are so vehemently defending it. It's about giving
- 9:26Speaker 7: our women and girls the opportunity to play sports in
- 9:29Speaker 7: a safe and fair environment.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And I want to continue with that as it pertains
- 9:35Speaker 3: to sports. The NCAA men's basketball chatter bread. There are
- 9:38Speaker 3: changes going forward, and those changes started with the work
- 9:42Speaker 3: really that you and Governor Morrisey yeah put together.
- 9:45Speaker 7: So you know, everybody remembers earlier this year when w
- 9:49Speaker 7: got left out of the tournament. Wv was an obvious
- 9:52Speaker 7: tournament team. I doubt they would have won the whole thing,
- 9:54Speaker 7: but that's the point, right You don't know, And there
- 9:58Speaker 7: were some parts of the selection committee process that were
- 10:04Speaker 7: I don't know if untoward is exactly the right word,
- 10:06Speaker 7: but there was a lack of transparency and a system
- 10:10Speaker 7: that enabled those with a a vested interest in their
- 10:15Speaker 7: own teams uh being part of the process of picking
- 10:19Speaker 7: who the teams were. And so in the aftermath of
- 10:22Speaker 7: West Virginia's snub, you know, we we undertook to to
- 10:27Speaker 7: ask the NC Double A to change the way that
- 10:30Speaker 7: they do the process so that in the future these
- 10:34Speaker 7: problems don't occur. And and everybody remembers Bubba Cunningham was
- 10:37Speaker 7: the head of the NC Double A selection committee. He
- 10:41Speaker 7: was also the athletic director at the University of North Carolina.
- 10:44Speaker 3: And the fact that his name was Bubba Bubba.
- 10:46Speaker 7: It was yeah, I mean, it was the most on
- 10:49Speaker 7: the nose name of all time. But you know, his
- 10:53Speaker 7: team made it into the tournament and our team did not.
- 10:56Speaker 7: And it was mathematically improbable when you looked at the
- 10:59Speaker 7: resumes of the two teams for North Carolina to have
- 11:02Speaker 7: been selected ahead of WU and and so we undertook
- 11:06Speaker 7: a conversation and and you know, some of them were
- 11:09Speaker 7: hard conversations with the NC double A, and we were
- 11:12Speaker 7: able to come to a resolution and the NC double
- 11:14Speaker 7: A actually changed their rules as it pertains to the
- 11:17Speaker 7: selection committee as a result of of the work that
- 11:19Speaker 7: that that we did and the Governor helped us do.
- 11:22Speaker 7: And I think it's really a better day today for
- 11:25Speaker 7: the NCAA tournament than it was yesterday.
- 11:27Speaker 3: And this is going to again. And I think you know,
- 11:29Speaker 3: there were there were there were critics of that, of
- 11:33Speaker 3: your office's involvement and the and the governor also there
- 11:36Speaker 3: were critics that because they said, well and I had
- 11:39Speaker 3: a text to the show yesterday to the afternoon. Somebody said, well,
- 11:42Speaker 3: why is this important and why why should the Attorney
- 11:46Speaker 3: General's office be involved in that? And to that, you
- 11:48Speaker 3: would say a couple of things.
- 11:51Speaker 7: First of all, just because something doesn't seem like it's
- 11:54Speaker 7: important to you doesn't mean it isn't important to a
- 11:56Speaker 7: lot of other people, including the university. Second of all,
- 11:59Speaker 7: we were very very successful, and third of all, we
- 12:03Speaker 7: were able to continue to do all of the incredible
- 12:06Speaker 7: work that the Attorney General's Office has to do at
- 12:08Speaker 7: the same time. Right, It isn't a binary situation. It
- 12:12Speaker 7: isn't like because I was doing this, we weren't doing that.
- 12:15Speaker 7: We were able to do all of those things at
- 12:17Speaker 7: the same time because we have a well run group
- 12:19Speaker 7: with a bunch of great lawyers, and you know, it's
- 12:22Speaker 7: my job to make sure that we are prioritizing things
- 12:24Speaker 7: in a way to make sure that our functionality is
- 12:26Speaker 7: going properly. And I think anybody who can look back
- 12:29Speaker 7: at the last eight months of what we've done in
- 12:31Speaker 7: the Attorney General's Office and say that we haven't been successful.
- 12:34Speaker 7: We haven't been working hard for the people of West
- 12:36Speaker 7: Virginian and we haven't been attacking all of the issues
- 12:38Speaker 7: that West Virginians expect us to, I think you'd have
- 12:42Speaker 7: a hard time doing that. And so, you know, it
- 12:45Speaker 7: is it's always a priorities thing in government, right, and
- 12:50Speaker 7: we felt that that deserved the amount of priority that
- 12:52Speaker 7: it got, and we gave it enough attention to actually
- 12:55Speaker 7: make a real change.
- 12:56Speaker 4: And I think that's important.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Let's do in a world of pipelines, pipelines, pipelines.
- 13:02Speaker 4: Well, we need pipeline pipeline.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Actually there is, I think, and you would be more
- 13:06Speaker 3: up on this than I know. I think the Supreme
- 13:08Speaker 3: Court is taking their show on the road today. I
- 13:13Speaker 3: think it is. I heard on the morning news this morning,
- 13:15Speaker 3: and pipelines are going to be a part of the discuss.
- 13:18Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 13:18Speaker 4: So pipelines have become a.
- 13:22Speaker 7: Political target of the environmental left and people that hate
- 13:27Speaker 7: the idea that we are going to be an energy
- 13:29Speaker 7: independent nation and we're going to use the God given
- 13:32Speaker 7: resources that are below our feet to fuel an American revolution.
- 13:37Speaker 7: They know that if we can't get the gas and
- 13:40Speaker 7: oil from the well to the processing facility, that it
- 13:43Speaker 7: can't be used, and so they target these pipeline projects.
- 13:47Speaker 7: And so one of the things that our office does,
- 13:49Speaker 7: not just in West Virginia, but in the whole country,
- 13:52Speaker 7: is that we defend the ability for our natural resources companies,
- 13:55Speaker 7: the people who power our daily lives, the people who
- 13:58Speaker 7: create the oil that creates everything we do every day,
- 14:01Speaker 7: the people that create the gas and the coal that
- 14:04Speaker 7: makes all of the electricity that powers our iPhones and
- 14:07Speaker 7: and your tesla's uh if you will. And so we
- 14:11Speaker 7: we we defend our pipeline projects from from coast to
- 14:15Speaker 7: coast because we know that the people that are building
- 14:19Speaker 7: them are doing them environmentally soundly and that they are
- 14:24Speaker 7: They're so important to the future of this country that
- 14:28Speaker 7: you know it is incumbent upon people who are willing
- 14:31Speaker 7: to stand up to do So what else is.
- 14:33Speaker 3: On your mind this morning?
- 14:35Speaker 7: You know it is, Uh, it's a wonderful day to
- 14:38Speaker 7: be a West Virginian. But there's a lot of stuff
- 14:40Speaker 7: going on in the world, and you know it is
- 14:42Speaker 7: I got a ten and an eight year old at home,
- 14:46Speaker 7: and you know, there's a lot.
- 14:48Speaker 4: On my mind.
- 14:49Speaker 7: It is a I think it's a very very difficult
- 14:52Speaker 7: time to be a young person in this country.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I can't imagine being that as young as you're oughters
- 15:00Speaker 3: are and what the future And I hate to be
- 15:02Speaker 3: that guy because generally speaking, I'm a positive, upbeat guy,
- 15:05Speaker 3: but I can't imagine. It's what if we don't do
- 15:10Speaker 3: something with the world. And I don't know what that
- 15:12Speaker 3: answer is, but what it's going to be like for them.
- 15:16Speaker 7: Watching a young father get gunned down in broad daylight
- 15:18Speaker 7: during a political rally. As a young father who speaks
- 15:21Speaker 7: frequently at open air political rallies, is you know a
- 15:25Speaker 7: little concerning for me. But more than that, I'm just
- 15:29Speaker 7: so hopeful that we can use the events of the
- 15:33Speaker 7: last week or so to do better, because my kids
- 15:37Speaker 7: deserve a country where they feel very, very free to
- 15:40Speaker 7: express whatever opinions they have. I hope my kids turn
- 15:43Speaker 7: out to be conservative, but you never know. I'd say
- 15:47Speaker 7: the chances are pretty good.
- 15:48Speaker 3: I'd say, well, you know, are you talking about your sister?
- 15:51Speaker 4: Though that's yesterday?
- 15:52Speaker 3: That was very interesting.
- 15:54Speaker 7: I grew up in a home where the free exercise
- 15:56Speaker 7: of political beliefs was very well promoted, and we were
- 16:01Speaker 7: allowed to be and think whoever we wanted to be.
- 16:03Speaker 7: And I think that's important, and I try really hard
- 16:05Speaker 7: to make sure my kids have the you know, to
- 16:08Speaker 7: the extent that it's possible, the freedom to become whomever
- 16:11Speaker 7: they want to be, but whomever they want to be
- 16:14Speaker 7: needs to be protected from violence, and that whether that's
- 16:19Speaker 7: it's just terrifying to when I was at a conference
- 16:24Speaker 7: last week and they were going through the AI chatbots
- 16:30Speaker 7: and how they interacted with teenagers, and one of the
- 16:34Speaker 7: AI companies, and I won't use their name at this time,
- 16:37Speaker 7: but the AI taught the child how to kill themselves,
- 16:44Speaker 7: down to how to tie a noose and then wrote
- 16:47Speaker 7: the suicide note for the kid that actually killed themselves.
- 16:51Speaker 7: And when you start to look at what's happening from
- 16:55Speaker 7: human to human, but also what's happening from computer to human,
- 16:59Speaker 7: it's just an intent densely dangerous time to be a
- 17:01Speaker 7: young person in this country. And it's concerning as a parent,
- 17:04Speaker 7: it's concerning as a person who has the ability to

- 20:29Speaker 3: and Dick Daughtry and John Jarret Jared Construction joined us
- 20:32Speaker 3: to talk about Dick, good morning, Welcome to the show, sir,
- 20:34Speaker 3: Good morning Dave.
- 20:35Speaker 4: How are you.
- 20:36Speaker 3: I am doing fine, mister Jared. It's always a pleasure

- 20:39Speaker 4: Thank you, Dave. Good to see.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Maybe a turn that microphone just a little bit more

- 20:50Speaker 3: to ask you John, real quick before we get into this.
- 20:52Speaker 3: We had John metrom Metrows midday last weekend. Your company
- 20:56Speaker 3: on Friday did an event to honor first responders up
- 21:02Speaker 3: in Morgantown. I thought it was a fantastic idea.
- 21:05Speaker 4: How did it go?
- 21:05Speaker 3: It went?
- 21:06Speaker 12: It was fantastic. Dave had several first responders from the
- 21:10Speaker 12: Morgantown area to visit our site. One lucky Morgantown area
- 21:17Speaker 12: police lady policewoman won two tickets to the pit game
- 21:20Speaker 12: and got to see a wonderful Mountaineer victory Saturday. So
- 21:24Speaker 12: the event was well well done. And appreciate you having
- 21:30Speaker 12: us on last week to talk about it to recognize
- 21:33Speaker 12: first responders, and you know, it was that September eleventh
- 21:36Speaker 12: that just brings first responders and what they do for
- 21:39Speaker 12: us home, and we were glad to be able to
- 21:42Speaker 12: do it and appreciate you letting us talk about it.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Absolutely sound like it was gonna be a fantastic event.
- 21:48Speaker 3: And I know it was held in Morgantown because your
- 21:50Speaker 3: county does a lot of work up there, but it
- 21:51Speaker 3: wasn't just limited to Morgandown people. I think you get
- 21:53Speaker 3: all kinds of people there. So's and somebody got the
- 21:56Speaker 3: tickets to what turned out to be a great game.
- 21:58Speaker 12: Guess yes, indeed, yes, it was great.
- 22:01Speaker 3: All right, So let's first talk about Dick. I'll start
- 22:04Speaker 3: with you, for those who may not have heard you
- 22:06Speaker 3: of the last time you were on the air, talk
- 22:07Speaker 3: about this fellowship Home and what it is that home is.
- 22:11Speaker 13: Yeah, I'm well, I'm Dick Doroty. I'm the executive director
- 22:14Speaker 13: of the Canava Fellowship Home where your neighbor across the
- 22:18Speaker 13: parking lot of eleven twenty one Virginia Street. We are
- 22:21Speaker 13: the oldest sober living facility in the state of West Virginia.
- 22:24Speaker 13: We were established in nineteen sixty seven as an originally
- 22:27Speaker 13: has an outreached mission of our church next door in
- 22:30Speaker 13: same block too, first Presbyterian Church, and so over the
- 22:34Speaker 13: years it was originally a kind of a halfway house
- 22:38Speaker 13: or a respite for men suffered from alcohol problems, and
- 22:41Speaker 13: that men in the church that had been gotten sober
- 22:44Speaker 13: in alcoholics anonymous got together and rented a house and
- 22:50Speaker 13: had a place where men could get better from drinking
- 22:53Speaker 13: for a period of time. So it's morphed into a
- 22:56Speaker 13: sober living program that is a three phase program that
- 22:59Speaker 13: we work with people that have opiate addictions and the
- 23:03Speaker 13: substance use just sort of the flavor of the day
- 23:05Speaker 13: what men are addicted to call on meth and fetamen
- 23:08Speaker 13: and alcohol and all those sorts of things. And so
- 23:12Speaker 13: we've been we've expanded over the years. We currently have
- 23:16Speaker 13: thirty five beds, and we recently purchased months before last
- 23:21Speaker 13: we bought the Johnstone building or the law office next
- 23:24Speaker 13: door to us on the corner of Brooks.
- 23:26Speaker 4: And Virginia Street.
- 23:28Speaker 13: And I met John about a year and a half ago,
- 23:32Speaker 13: I say and told him, what was you know, what
- 23:35Speaker 13: we were doing?
- 23:36Speaker 4: And we were We.
- 23:37Speaker 13: Got together and we hit kind of hit it off,
- 23:39Speaker 13: and he introduced me to Poke Valley Bank and we
- 23:44Speaker 13: we made a deal to buy the building and it's
- 23:47Speaker 13: and John's going to help us with the construction, with
- 23:49Speaker 13: the chair construction, and so it's coming to fruition. We
- 23:52Speaker 13: closed on the building. We are now in the building.
- 23:55Speaker 13: We've we're going to add twelve more sober living beds,
- 23:58Speaker 13: private beds for men and suffering for in our face
- 24:03Speaker 13: too part of our program, and we hope that so
- 24:07Speaker 13: we'll ultimately we'll have forty seven beds.
- 24:09Speaker 4: In total.
- 24:09Speaker 13: We have turned away twelve hundred people in the last
- 24:12Speaker 13: five years since I've been the executive.
- 24:13Speaker 3: And that's what you hear a lot from the experts
- 24:16Speaker 3: in this field, guys, is that you hear somebody may
- 24:19Speaker 3: want to get better, but they're just not enough beds available,
- 24:24Speaker 3: And tragically, we hear worst case scenario. We hear a
- 24:28Speaker 3: lot of stories where someone died waiting on a bed,
- 24:33Speaker 3: not necessarily at your facility, but I mean, in general,
- 24:35Speaker 3: we hear those stories all the time.
- 24:37Speaker 13: There is a huge need in our community locally and
- 24:40Speaker 13: in the state of West Virginia and the opioid response
- 24:44Speaker 13: the big fund that under Governor Morrissey that now our
- 24:49Speaker 13: Attorney General JB. Mccusky it was just here, is in
- 24:53Speaker 13: charge of. They set up a foundation called the West
- 24:56Speaker 13: Virginia First Foundation, and there's a lot of money available
- 24:59Speaker 13: through that in part is going to help us fund.
- 25:02Speaker 13: We've applied for a grant or going to apply for
- 25:04Speaker 13: another grant with them, and we've made it an application
- 25:07Speaker 13: through the Federal Home Own Bank for a forgivable loan
- 25:09Speaker 13: that's going to hopefully fund a big part of this project.
- 25:12Speaker 13: But we were here today to talk about our mission
- 25:15Speaker 13: and about the fact that we have a two million
- 25:17Speaker 13: dollar campaign fundraising campaign to try to pay for this
- 25:21Speaker 13: and get it, get it infruition. We want to be
- 25:23Speaker 13: in business this time next year. I want to fill
- 25:25Speaker 13: those beds with men that need our help, all.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Right, and talk about this project, talk about this, the
- 25:32Speaker 3: whole fundraising aspect of this thing.
- 25:34Speaker 13: Well, we have, of course, we have since we've been
- 25:37Speaker 13: around for a long time. We have we the United Way,
- 25:41Speaker 13: the Greater Kanalvai Foundation, the Jacobson Foundation, the day Would Foundation.
- 25:47Speaker 13: We have a lot of different people that help us,
- 25:48Speaker 13: and we have an annual fundraiser, and we have a
- 25:52Speaker 13: lot of grateful alumni people that have done well after
- 25:55Speaker 13: they've gotten sobered up through our program, that come back
- 25:58Speaker 13: and give to us. So we have odd community support.
- 26:00Speaker 13: And we just did a mailing that I gave you
- 26:02Speaker 13: a copy of that came out kind of talks about
- 26:05Speaker 13: the details of the plan, but the plan was to
- 26:08Speaker 13: purchase the building, add the sober living. They're basically studio
- 26:13Speaker 13: apartments for in their private rooms with shared baths, and
- 26:18Speaker 13: they are really really nice. They're air conditioned, they they'll
- 26:21Speaker 13: have Wi Fi, they'll have laundry service, they'll have everything
- 26:24Speaker 13: that's needed, and we'll offer food we'll offer meals next
- 26:27Speaker 13: door at our main facility at eleven twenty one Virginia Street,
- 26:30Speaker 13: and so that's the first phase of our program. But
- 26:33Speaker 13: it's expensive because the building was built. It was originally
- 26:38Speaker 13: the bone and joint surgeons. The doctor Giz and doctor
- 26:40Speaker 13: Sale and doctor Bengani practiced medicine there and then they
- 26:43Speaker 13: moved up up on the hill and then it became
- 26:47Speaker 13: a law office. But it's got good bones. But it
- 26:50Speaker 13: has because we're going to have people who live there.
- 26:52Speaker 13: We have to sprinkle it. We have to basically gut
- 26:55Speaker 13: the entire building and start over again with a structure.
- 26:58Speaker 13: And that's where mister Jarrett Can comes in. And we
- 27:01Speaker 13: had my friend Tom Potts at Selling Associates, architect is
- 27:05Speaker 13: also a friend that is a friend of Recovery and
- 27:09Speaker 13: is helping us with some of the design aspects of it.
- 27:12Speaker 13: But John has a personal story that was really interesting.
- 27:14Speaker 13: I thought might come to light that helps that God
- 27:18Speaker 13: works in mysterious ways, and it's just strange. How it's
- 27:22Speaker 13: not strange, it's prophetic how it happened. But John told
- 27:24Speaker 13: me a story and I'd like him to kind of
- 27:26Speaker 13: share that.
- 27:27Speaker 12: Sared Dick, thank you buddy, and it has been a
- 27:30Speaker 12: blessing to be able to connect with you. When I
- 27:34Speaker 12: received that call from you, I guess it was about
- 27:37Speaker 12: this time last year, maybe a little bit longer, and
- 27:40Speaker 12: brought back a bunch of memories for me. My dad,
- 27:43Speaker 12: Klein Jarrett was a resident of Canawh Valley Fellowship Home
- 27:48Speaker 12: when it was the old house next to the Presbyterian Church.
- 27:54Speaker 12: And Dad fought his demons for many years and was
- 27:59Speaker 12: there and with some of the best years of his
- 28:01Speaker 12: life is when he was sober at your facility. And
- 28:05Speaker 12: I think low Smith had your job at right time.
- 28:08Speaker 12: And Uh I got to meet Lou a time or
- 28:11Speaker 12: two and and uh and Dad, Uh, Dad did the
- 28:15Speaker 12: best he could. Unfortunately, fortunately my dad wasn't able to
- 28:20Speaker 12: overcome his addiction and uh he he passed away at
- 28:24Speaker 12: uh uh in a in a shelter. And so the
- 28:29Speaker 12: opportunity for me to help you and help your calls
- 28:32Speaker 12: and help the men at Canall Valley Fellowship Home, well
- 28:36Speaker 12: that's just something God is put in front of me,
- 28:38Speaker 12: and I'm I'm thankful for that and we're looking forward
- 28:41Speaker 12: to being able to help help the program, help the mission.
- 28:45Speaker 12: Uh that's your own.
- 28:45Speaker 3: And What I like about having you both of you
- 28:47Speaker 3: on the show is because I mean, look, the you know,
- 28:51Speaker 3: the cause is great, the need is great, we all
- 28:52Speaker 3: know that. But but you, but you two, Dick and John,
- 28:55Speaker 3: I mean you you got You've got stories as well
- 28:58Speaker 3: about the personal things that in your case, John, that
- 29:02Speaker 3: your that your father went through, Dick, and things that
- 29:05Speaker 3: you've seen you've gone through. And I think that's I
- 29:08Speaker 3: think that adds another layer to the story.
- 29:11Speaker 13: Absolutely, and it is uh, you know. I I've volunteered
- 29:15Speaker 13: at the at the Fellowship Poem for the last thirty
- 29:17Speaker 13: plus years and I've been blessed to be the executive
- 29:20Speaker 13: director for the last five years. And they're great. We
- 29:24Speaker 13: have a volunteer board of directors that most of them
- 29:26Speaker 13: are in recovery themselves, and they they believe in our
- 29:30Speaker 13: what we do one hundred percent, and so we over
- 29:34Speaker 13: the years, we've morphed into a program that we've proven
- 29:36Speaker 13: that the longer men that are addicted, that have addiction
- 29:39Speaker 13: issues stay in structured sober living, the better their chances are.
- 29:43Speaker 13: We want to get them involved in a recovery community
- 29:45Speaker 13: here in Charleston that the longer we keep them and
- 29:48Speaker 13: let their brains heal and let their let their you know,
- 29:51Speaker 13: learn about their addictions and learn about you know, get
- 29:54Speaker 13: sponsors and worksteps, and make amends to people for things
- 29:57Speaker 13: they've done wrong. We believe we're treating men that are
- 29:59Speaker 13: sick with a disease that need to get well, not
- 30:02Speaker 13: bad men that need to get good. Men sick men
- 30:05Speaker 13: do bad things, need to get in trouble, and they
- 30:06Speaker 13: have to pay the price, They have to make amends.
- 30:09Speaker 13: And ultimately, though, we get to the point where they
- 30:12Speaker 13: get well enough that they start carrying that message to
- 30:14Speaker 13: the next guy that comes along that there's hope and
- 30:17Speaker 13: that they can get better from an addiction and that
- 30:19Speaker 13: they can have a fruitful life, a happy, fulfilled, you know,
- 30:24Speaker 13: wonderful life with free from alcohol drugs. And that's basically
- 30:28Speaker 13: our mission is is to provide that time, which is
- 30:32Speaker 13: from six months to three years. We've proven that if
- 30:34Speaker 13: you stay with us six months, you have a one
- 30:37Speaker 13: in three chance, if you stay with us a year,
- 30:39Speaker 13: you have a seventy percent chance, and if you stay
- 30:41Speaker 13: with us three years and you stay active in recovery
- 30:44Speaker 13: in the recovery community, you have better than eighty percent
- 30:48Speaker 13: chances stand sober for the rest of your life.
- 30:50Speaker 3: And so that's what has it been your experience because
- 30:52Speaker 3: I've talked Dick to other people that do similar type things,
- 30:57Speaker 3: and they have said that the top counselors, I don't
- 31:03Speaker 3: know if that's the word you want to use, or
- 31:05Speaker 3: the people that are the best at this at reaching
- 31:08Speaker 3: people are people that have been there themselves, because I mean,
- 31:11Speaker 3: I mean, let's think about your own experience. It's just
- 31:13Speaker 3: like you know, I mean, you go to an institution
- 31:16Speaker 3: of higher learning and you're being instructed by somebody who's
- 31:19Speaker 3: never actually done this sort of thing. You know, It's
- 31:24Speaker 3: been my experience of talking to these people that the
- 31:26Speaker 3: people that have actually lived those lives are the better,
- 31:29Speaker 3: are just much better at absolutely and helping, for lack
- 31:34Speaker 3: of a better term.
- 31:34Speaker 13: That's our house manager of My assistant director, Jay Webb
- 31:38Speaker 13: has been He's a product of our home. He's been
- 31:41Speaker 13: sober and clean and sober for busting his anemity. But
- 31:44Speaker 13: he's been he's been sober for nineteen years. He's a
- 31:49Speaker 13: product of the Fellowship Home. I'm in, you know, I'm
- 31:52Speaker 13: in recovery. I've been sober. It'll be thirty eight years
- 31:54Speaker 13: on January third. This coming year. You know all the
- 31:59Speaker 13: men that I work with and what it's lived experience.
- 32:02Speaker 13: We employee people. We have a peer recovery support specialist,
- 32:05Speaker 13: it's in recovery. That's a product of our program. We're
- 32:07Speaker 13: going to have to hire another one when we get
- 32:09Speaker 13: done with with the expansion project here. And we have
- 32:14Speaker 13: lots of volunteers that come into our home. Our addiction
- 32:17Speaker 13: professional that does the counseling. He's a product of our
- 32:21Speaker 13: program too, and he went on to get he didn't
- 32:23Speaker 13: have a college degree. He got a college degree and
- 32:25Speaker 13: a master's degree in addiction counseling. He's now he's counseling
- 32:28Speaker 13: our men. So it is that lived experience that you know,
- 32:31Speaker 13: the experience strength and hope and that we get through
- 32:34Speaker 13: the program, through the twelve step programs.
- 32:36Speaker 3: What we all right, people are listening right now. How
- 32:38Speaker 3: can they get involved? How can they help out with
- 32:40Speaker 3: this capital project?
- 32:41Speaker 13: You can well, we have a website kV f H
- 32:44Speaker 13: Cannaw Value Fellowship Home SOLCI. Our initials kV F H
- 32:47Speaker 13: dot O RG. My telephone number is three O four
- 32:51Speaker 13: three four two eight five one. I would invite anybody
- 32:56Speaker 13: that's interested to come and talk to us. I can
- 32:58Speaker 13: mail you of one of our little brochures that we have.
- 33:03Speaker 13: There'll be more stuff on Facebook, social media and marketing
- 33:06Speaker 13: that sort of thing, and so we're it's it's going big.
- 33:08Speaker 13: But I'd love for people to come and visit us.

- 39:44Speaker 3: I been able to ask, I would have asked about
- 39:46Speaker 3: all of the people who have committed or I'm sorry
- 39:48Speaker 3: I commented unfavorably on the shooting. While tasteless and not needed,
- 39:52Speaker 3: those comments are also free speech. He also needs to
- 39:56Speaker 3: defend those comments and should say that seeking revenge on
- 39:58Speaker 3: those people is also not rights. Do some have free
- 40:02Speaker 3: speech and not others. I can't speak for mister mccusky.

- 40:25Speaker 3: ultimate free speech guy, no matter whether I agree or disagree.
- 40:29Speaker 3: Tex says, Okay, that was from yesterday, Texas, Dave, I've
- 40:35Speaker 3: had some introspection about Charlie kirks murder, and I understand
- 40:38Speaker 3: the grief of Kirk's followers. They felt a personal connection
- 40:41Speaker 3: to him as he was in their homes most of
- 40:44Speaker 3: the night. He was one of their thought leaders and
- 40:47Speaker 3: a leader of thought for his followers. I can emphasize
- 40:51Speaker 3: with Kirk's followers, they no longer know what to think

- 41:35Speaker 3: but I will say what I would do as long
- 41:37Speaker 3: as what they are doing if there are if people
- 41:40Speaker 3: do show up to protest, as long as what they
- 41:45Speaker 3: are doing is within the confines of the law, they
- 41:49Speaker 3: should not be It's remember the whole thing with the
- 41:52Speaker 3: Westboro Baptist Church years ago. Uh, these were these idiots
- 41:58Speaker 3: that showed up and protested fewunerals of coal miners and
- 42:01Speaker 3: things of that nature. Uh, you know, a off an
- 42:05Speaker 3: alt right group, and that was a lot of controversy
- 42:10Speaker 3: and people said, you know, they shouldn't be allowed to
- 42:12Speaker 3: do that. Actually they should because it's America. You may
- 42:15Speaker 3: not like it, you may have to deal with the
- 42:17Speaker 3: consequences if you go into certain areas of West Virginia
- 42:20Speaker 3: to do that. But absolutely they should be able to

- 42:36Speaker 3: to threaten prosecution over First Amendment rights? I don't know
- 42:40Speaker 3: the particulars of this case. I will say that a
- 42:45Speaker 3: private business has right, has a right to turn down
- 42:48Speaker 3: any business that they want to if your office depot,
- 42:51Speaker 3: that's a pretty dumb decision, but you know you can
- 42:56Speaker 3: a private business can refuse service to anybody that they want.
- 42:59Speaker 3: But again, they also have to be willing to deal
- 43:02Speaker 3: with the fallout, whether it's a court case, whether it's
- 43:05Speaker 3: bad publicity or whatever. Text says Dave. We need to
- 43:14Speaker 3: hold our elected officials accountable with this legislation session. No
- 43:17Speaker 3: more social issues and hate legislation. Need to focus on

- 47:03Speaker 3: candlelight vigil was organized by the WVU branch of Kirk's
- 47:06Speaker 3: Turning Point USA. Well over one thousand people showed up
- 47:12Speaker 3: last night, and I don't think, really, I do not
- 47:16Speaker 3: think they anticipated that many people would show up to
- 47:20Speaker 3: honored life and work with Charlie Kirk. I mean it
- 47:22Speaker 3: was well over a thousand people. We have a story
- 47:25Speaker 3: in pictures posted at wv metronews dot com. Now, as
- 47:29Speaker 3: we talked about earlier, there is going to be one
- 47:30Speaker 3: in Charleston Thursday on the Capitol Grounds Governor Morrissey making
- 47:34Speaker 3: that announcement, and the governor is expected to speak at
- 47:37Speaker 3: that event. President Trump will attend one in Arizona this week,
- 47:41Speaker 3: and in the meantime, The Wall Street Journal over the
- 47:44Speaker 3: weekend had an op ed that was written by a
- 47:47Speaker 3: professor of political science from California who uncovered some disturbing facts.
- 47:55Speaker 3: According to a new poll, I'm sorry, ninety three percent
- 48:00Speaker 3: of baby boomers think political violence in any form is wrong.
- 48:05Speaker 3: Ninety three eighty six percent of my generation Gen X
- 48:10Speaker 3: thinks it's always wrong, but only fifty six percent of
- 48:16Speaker 3: the young'ins gen Z, defined as those born between nineteen
- 48:21Speaker 3: ninety seven and twenty twelve, only fifty six percent think
- 48:25Speaker 3: political violence is always wrong, meaning meaning that a large
- 48:30Speaker 3: percentage of members of Gen Z, again those born between
- 48:36Speaker 3: ninety seven and twenty twelve, are okay with political violence
- 48:42Speaker 3: as what we saw with Charlie Kirk that my friends
- 48:48Speaker 3: to me, is very scary, and it's only getting scarier
- 48:53Speaker 3: as we head toward the future.
- 48:55Speaker 5: And I have.
- 48:58Speaker 3: I don't know what to say. I have made my
- 49:00Speaker 3: feelings known about about Charlie Kirk. You may or may
- 49:04Speaker 3: not have agreed with him. I did not on many fronts,
- 49:06Speaker 3: some of the things I did. But he did not
- 49:09Speaker 3: deserve to die any more than anyone who may have
- 49:13Speaker 3: been had a similar passion but was on the other side.
- 49:20Speaker 3: I just I don't I just have a hard time wrapping,
- 49:24Speaker 3: you know, my head around this that someone is so
- 49:27Speaker 3: filled with anger over words that they would go to
- 49:32Speaker 3: that level. And again, I don't care whether they're on
- 49:34Speaker 3: the left or the right, you know. I also also
- 49:38Speaker 3: and you've heard me talk about this on the show
- 49:39Speaker 3: before too, I also don't see how anybody could be
- 49:42Speaker 3: as angry to do what they did on January sixth.
- 49:46Speaker 3: And I felt that anybody that entered that capital on
- 49:50Speaker 3: January sixth should have been prosecuted, and many were. Many
- 49:53Speaker 3: were also pardoned to the fullest extent of the law. Now,
- 49:56Speaker 3: I know, talking about maybe two different things here, but
- 50:00Speaker 3: are we really those people were radicals, the people that
- 50:03Speaker 3: went into the capitol in January sixth, the ones that
- 50:05Speaker 3: did the destruction. Okay, I'm not talking about people that
- 50:08Speaker 3: showed up and just protested, which was stupid and pointless
- 50:12Speaker 3: in my eye, But they had the right to do that.
- 50:16Speaker 3: Once they entered that capital and they started breaking things,
- 50:19Speaker 3: and they started doing what they did game over, game over,
- 50:24Speaker 3: and I agree. My feelings on this situation would have
- 50:28Speaker 3: been the same had it been Charlie Kirk or the
- 50:30Speaker 3: most liberal of speakers. I've been very clear about that.
- 50:34Speaker 3: I make no differences between the two.
- 50:38Speaker 2: It may have.
