- Glenn Ordway: Pete the Meat is back. It's that time of the week. So a week ago, I sat here and argued with you that Drake May had lost all confidence because we know he's got the ability. We saw it all of last year. I don't give a shit about the schedule. You want to know something? I even if he did it against the Pop Warner team, he showed you last year that he's capable of throwing the ball, making Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: decisions. So I ask you. A week later, after Sunday's performance, do you now suddenly agree with me that Drake May has lost all confidence in himself? Pete Sheppard: Well, I didn't totally disagree with you last week. I said let me see a little let me see a little bit more. Glenn Ordway: Yes you did. Yes you did yes you did. Pete Sheppard: As he lost all confidence, no. maybe eighty percent. Maybe eighty, eighty five percent. It was hey, there was blood on the football. Glen I well, 'cause it Glenn Ordway: Where w where was the twenty pr wait a minute, where was the twenty percent that I saw right there of Bravado? Pete Sheppard: d well there's blood on the football, Glenn. Didn't you read that? There's blood on the football Glenn Ordway: my god. Pete Sheppard: No, I look it the the the only Did the only two good things that came out of that game yesterday, as far as I'm concerned, one is week three, and you might you might hopefully have a chance to fix it, week three. Glenn Ordway: Okay, give it to you. Fourteen to play. Right. Pete Sheppard: And number two, Stevenson didn't fumble at all. Unfortunately, Drake May did and had horrible turnovers and got worse and worse as the game went on. I mean, it really is unbelievable to me how bad it got. And, you know, sp even after the fumble and you know Vrabel gets in its space, is like, okay, stay competent, blah, blah, blah. And there was another thing. They drive down the field, they throw the pick in the end zone. It was absolutely horrific. That would have made it a one-score game. The only other good thing this week, I am glad they're playing Buffalo and not some other crap. Because I'd Glenn Ordway: Why? In Buffalo? Pete Sheppard: rather see them go up against arguably one of the best teams in the NFL than a Tennessee. Because I want to see. Glenn Ordway: yeah, they're doing so well against these good teams, Pete. Sure. Why not? Pete Sheppard: I I well I want to s but no, because I wanna I wanna see. And as we've seen again this weekend, you don't take anybody in the NFL for granted. Nobody. Nobody. There's no easy games. There's just there just isn't. But I'd rather Glenn Ordway: I I Pete Sheppard: have them if they're gonna bench them, bench them after this game. Let me see them go up against the best team in the AFC East and one of the best teams in the AFC right now. Let's see what they have. But I don't you I mean I'd rather have them if they're gonna not bench them, and I don't think I'm not ready to say bench him yet. I might be after Sunday, to be honest with you. And by the way, JJ McCarthy just got traded from the Vikings to the Giants for a fifth round pick. That happened earlier today. I'm not ready to bench him for Buffalo. I'm not Glenn Ordway: Right. Right. The Giants are desperate for a quarterback. Pete Sheppard: ready to bench for Buffalo. I might be if if this continues, then you gotta seriously consider it. You gotta seriously consider it. But I'm all I'm saying is I'm glad to play in Buffalo and not like one of the w the the worst, one of the the poorer teams in the league. Let's put it that way. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Okay, let me let me save my Buffalo comments for later on. I want to go on what you just said. The only thing that you said that I think makes sense is they've only played three games. So they have 14 left, and it gives you a lot of time to fix this. Though I'm not sure the schedule over after the Buffalo game is as easy as people thought it were. Was the Raiders are Raiders are three and and you know what? The Jets are competitive. They may Pete Sheppard: There's no easiness. There's no easy. Glenn Ordway: be screwing up because they're stupid at the end of games. But they're competitive. So he's gonna face tough competition in the next few weeks. So let's get back to Drake May. This is all in his head, between his ears, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: 100%. Last year there were no expectations. The team started out like shit, out of the gate. They were terrible. He had, you know, five turnovers in that game against Pittsburgh. Now suddenly he starts putting it together, but there's no real expectations. Let's see what we've got. Maybe this kid is going to be okay. He was the third pick in the draft. And he starts to really impress to the point, Pete, where he was the runner-up for MVP and Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: could very easily have won it. This guy that's playing, that I saw play on Sunday, that was wearing number 10, he's an imposter. That is somebody who was the guy, the 49er fan that was claiming he was an imposter and he was claiming he was the 49er. Right? That's what Pete Sheppard: yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Glenn Ordway: this is. Some guy. Is wearing Drake May's number 10 uniform. He's an imposter. He's not the same guy. Petey's a puddle right now. He's a puddle. And and and the thing is, it's got it's got nothing, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Yeah, absolutely. Absolute puddle. That's a good word. Puddle. Glenn Ordway: it's got nothing to do with fundamentals. If it were fundamentals, it would be easy. Josh McDaniels, Mike Vrabel, they could fix it. Okay, get the elbow in, get the elbow out, whatever. They could fix it. Fixing in between the ears is so much more difficult. And this kid is feeling all of the weight on his shoulders right now. And on top of that, people were talking for the first two weeks about how the Patriots need to shell out the 70 million bucks a year right now and get him into a new contract. Maybe that's weighing on his mind. Maybe that's part of all of this because it's got nothing to do with his ability. We saw it firsthand last year. This kid has the ability to be a top five. quarterback in the National Football League, but he's screwed up in the head. Pete Sheppard: Can't disagree with anything. It's it's it's so sad. Absolutely sad. It's just no, no, no. We Glenn Ordway: Thank you, Pete. It's about time. It took thirty years for you to finally dis agree with something. Pete Sheppard: we've actually agreed on a lot more stuff than probably people realize over the years. But like you said, like I said, Glenn Ordway: Shirts, okay, the shirts we wear maybe, yeah. Pete Sheppard: it you know, if this is gonna happen, let it happen now. There's like you just said, there's set we got fourteen more games left to try and hopefully correct this thing. And I do think it's a good thing they're playing Buffalo because maybe that motivates him. I don't know for some reason. I don't know what the hell has happened to this guy. I really don't. It is and and people can talk about the three playoff games last year in the Super Bowl. And I understand that, well, this has been going on. Yeah, well, you like with that kind of stuff, you can't have it both ways. You can't say they played the top four defenses in the playoffs and in the Super Bowl and expect 300 yards and three touchdowns every game. Because that's not gonna happen for most quarterbacks who played in those games. They basically they won them all. They didn't have a good game against Seattle, obviously. The other three they won. But this is this is different. This is completely different than last year after three games. And I don't I don't know what to make it. I don't know. Mike Vrabel has got a huge test in practice this week to see what in the hell is going on. and look, I'm not I I I think this is the wrong week. to bench him for DeVito against against Buffalo. Now now could and the second Glenn Ordway: Okay. Pete Sheppard: and if if he has a shitty first half, all bets are off, Glenn. We'll get to that in a second. Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Yeah, no, I and I I agree I agree with you. I don't think the right approach is to bench him this week. My son said this yesterday when we did little old real postgame show. Yeah, so he's gonna Pete Sheppard: You guys were great by the way. You were fantastic. That was something. Wow. Glenn Ordway: be on it every week and wait till the Celtics season. You'll see him a lot more because he really knows the NBA inside now. He watches like every every game. But Boomer Syason said it on Monday on EEI. He came out and said, I would bench him right now. This game. Yeah. So Pete Sheppard: I heard it. I I d I disagree. I don't know how you could put Tommy Davito win against the Buffalo Bills right now. I'm not I'm not there yet. I'm not I might be at halftime. I might be at halftime. I might be at halftime, but not Glenn Ordway: Well the well wait a minute. He he he Pete Sheppard: not not right this very second. Glenn Ordway: Tommy DeVito came in for the little kid in the picture, you know, in a commercial. You don't think he should commit on this? Pete, this Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: is where I disagree with where you say it's it's three games, and I I understand 14 to play. This is seven games in a row now. Okay? So we could write it off and say they were great defensive teams. He played some good defensive teams last year. Okay? It wasn't. You know, he did they had an easy schedule, but there were some good defenses he went up against last year and he prevailed. This is a totally different guy. So it's not mechanics, it's not the shoulder, though it was brought up yesterday and he didn't dismiss Pete Sheppard: I heard that too. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: it, which I think was strange. I don't believe it had anything to do that first where he lost control of the football with blood. By the way, blood is a sticky substance. It is not a slimy substance, okay? It's sticky. Pete Sheppard: I could I couldn't believe that I couldn't believe it. It was like Glenn Ordway: Blood. Pete Sheppard: that I expect that from the Jets, you know. I don't expect that from one of our guys. And I I seriously and we're w watching with a bunch of buddies at my buddy Dave's house. I mean I was like we're we're like slowing it down. I was like we we're trying to I'm trying to go, please, let some angle show that somebody actually hit him. No, not at all. Nope, nope, just Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I thought somebody tipped it. Right. Pete Sheppard: you know, dif this a bit dropped it. I was like, my fucking God. I couldn't I was just disgusting. It was just absolute disgusting. Glenn Ordway: Pete, it could have been worse. He he he fumbled again in a key situation in the red zone, but he recovered it. I mean, there were two twice, right? I mean, Pete Sheppard: I know. Got it back. And then he fumbled he fumbled twice. When he got back. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: this could have been a lot worse. He has no idea what he's doing. You go back and look, and maybe you already have of the interception he threw in the end zone to Chisholm. Okay. Pete Sheppard: yes. Yep. Glenn Ordway: I I'm sitting there and I'm watching this and I'm saying, how can any high school quarterback look at what he's seeing out there? And say, little guy, by the way, Chisholm, how can Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: I get that ball to him? What do you think the chances were by throwing it to him? I I can understand overthrowing him out of the end zone, play it safe, get the three, you're okay, Pete Sheppard: Yeah, yeah. Yep. Glenn Ordway: right? He forces it into Chisholm, and I'm gonna tell you I would bet the percentages of completing that pass were maybe 1.5 or 2%. What are you thinking? Pete Sheppard: Yeah. No, it's a horrible, horrible decision. I don't know. And then remember, these he ran remember he ran one in, right? And they called it back on a penalty. That was another which I thought was a bullshit call. I'm not blaming the refs at all for this loss of anything like that. But I'm saying that there was some bad, there were some really bad call bad calls around the league yesterday, all around the league, some horrible Glenn Ordway: Sound like Fred now. Sound like Freddy. It's the officials' fault. Pete Sheppard: calls. Didn't matter. It's it's it's in his head, Glenn. And I don't know. Maybe this is gonna be more on Josh McDaniels and Mike Vabel. I'm sure a combination of both. Glenn Ordway: What do you do? Pete Sheppard: The p h exat what do you do except I don't I don't know what you do except practice, practice, practice. It's the Wednesdays and Thursday this week for him. You know, and I and the the other thing too, I'm I'm kinda tired of the of his wishy washy Charlie Brown answers. I gotta play better. I gotta I gotta Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I don't I don't really Pete Sheppard: I gotta make better decisions. I got yeah, it's the same rhetoric over Glenn Ordway: Gotta look in the mirror. Pete Sheppard: and let me let me bring this up too. And I remember reading this and I think it was Menahan that brought it up a couple of weeks ago. that, you know, what happened in the offseason this year compared to last year? did he? Glenn Ordway: He brought it up last week, I believe, before this game. Pete Sheppard: I d I can't remember where I saw it, but I know it was from him. Glenn Ordway: It was Minahan. Pete Sheppard: And it was a good point. You start thinking, and you know, because I'm sort of the last seven and a half months transitioned out of the business a little bit to my other job. So I didn't really, I really didn't think about it all that much. I just thought we got AJ Brown, they're gonna be better than last year. You know, I know we lost Booty, you know, I know we lost Stefan Diggs, but we got AJ Brown. This team, you know, it's gonna open up some things that Kyle Williams can get it going. But then you st then after I read what Kirk said, and you start thinking about, well, what did he do this officer? Because the previous one, he's working out with everybody. He's working out, he's doing extra stuff now. I think how we put it, somebody said like on the world tour or the Drake May's world tour. I don't know, maybe he didn't take is did he not take the off season as seriously as he did the year before? Glenn Ordway: I I don't know, but but it's it it's an interesting point because every time you saw him in the offseason, you saw him with his wife and they were in Europe or they were baking cookies or something Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: else. And I I think there is, especially in today's society, not as much 20 or 30 years ago, there is a big part for a professional athlete of creating your brand. Okay, because brand needs more money. You create Opportunities, commercial opportunities, advertising opportunities. It it wasn't that way 20, 30, 40 years ago. It's a big deal now, especially with social media. And so maybe he got caught into that stuff. I think it's a a valid point that it that Pete Sheppard: I do too. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: at least you know bears, you know, noticing whether this took him away from pure football. Let's look at the difference of his start of his career versus the start of Tom Brady. Again, I don't want to put him in the same sentence with Tom Brady. We know Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: with Tom Brady. You get ex you still get excited when I mention the name Brady? You get moist in certain parts of your body when I say Tom Brady? No? Okay. Pete Sheppard: I believe the phrase I used was a tingling sensation in my nether regions. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: That's what it was. Yeah. Exactly. So Brady started out as the four string quarterback. And to your credit, and I'll give Pete credit till the day I die on this one, Pete Sheppard: And Freddie. Glenn Ordway: and Freddie, but you but Freddie would go along with kind of whatever he thought was positive for the team. You were kind of you would go either way, both ways, right? I don't mean it in that sense, but in the sense that no, not that there is. But you, when he was the four string quarterback, You every day would bitch and say, they need to get Bledsoe out of the lineup and get this fourth string quarterback. And I'd say sit there and say to you, Pete, he's the fourth string quarterback for a reason. And you said, I'm telling you, I'm why we and we were down to practice. I'm watching him in practice. This kid is better than Bledsoe. And we I I laughed at you. Pete Sheppard: Well, it was more training camp the pre the following year. I you know, I remember him I remembered at Michigan. I knew what he went through at that time to get that starting job. and everybody had to jump. But it was the during training camp that we were at Yeah. Yeah. With Henson and a lot of other people. But when Glenn Ordway: Well he shared this he shared the starting job for a while at Michigan. Correct. Pete Sheppard: we were at Bryant College at the time, now it's Bryant University, but Bryant College at the time and saw him at practice and I s it I it was night and day. It was night and day, and I knew it was only a matter of time before he was gonna take over for Drew. Now nobody wanted the the Mo Lewis hit and all that stuff. And look, Drew had about another week to prove himself and he was coming out. He was coming out because it was so it was bad. But I saw, but I saw Glenn Ordway: Yeah, no question. I don't wanna hold on one second. Pete Sheppard: him develop as a in pre before the preseason, as the preseason was progressive. Glenn Ordway: You did. Pete Sheppard: You could see it. And it was a different level of quarterback play than Drew. And I loved Drew back in the day in his prime. He used to defend him all the time, probably more than they should have. But this was a different animal in Tom Brady. Glenn Ordway: Okay. I w I I'll hold it there because I I I I apologize to you years later. You were right. I was hold on Pete Sheppard: Come on, Fonzie. Glenn Ordway: Wrong. I get it out once I think of Ron Borges in my head. When I think of Ron Borges, I can sit there and say, wrong, wrong. See, I'm wrong. So my point is, Brady came from nothing. Nobody thought he was going to make it. They laughed at his photo at the combine. Okay, look at all that baby fat. What is this kid's gonna be an NFL quarterback? He was the 199th pick in the draft. Nobody thought anything of him, except Brady thought a lot of himself and said. Screw them. I can do this. And so he had there were no expectations. He came from nothing. So during the period he started to play, four interceptions in Miami, that's okay. He's just a young quarterback. You know, he's he's raw. He'll get it. Four interceptions in Denver, it's okay. He's raw. He'll get it eventually. There weren't those great expectations. If anything, there was phenomenal motivation on the part of Tom Brady to. Because he basically was trying to stick it to everybody who said he wasn't good enough to play. Fast forward to this kid, third pick in the draft. Everybody loved him. He didn't have to win a lot of games in North Carolina. They weren't winning a national championship. They weren't going to the playoffs. They were trying to win seven games, and they were having a good season. No real pressure, no great expectations. He was terrific at North Carolina, but there were no great expectations. Expectations that he had to do some. Now he comes into the NFL, and then we look at last season. Last season, first three games, no expectations. He was fine, even though he was not performing at a high level. Now suddenly he performs at a high level for the rest of the season. He could have, as I said earlier, easily have won the MVP. And everybody has a totally different take on Drake May. He's one of the legitimate top five quarterbacks. In the league. He was number two last year, if you're looking at that MVP voting. Now suddenly he's experiencing something he never experienced before, and he doesn't know how to deal with it. It's seven games in a row. It's not three, it's seven Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: in a row. I think most of us felt going to Jacksonville, come on, kid can't be this bad. He just can't be this bad. And in the Pittsburgh game, the defense bailed you out. He didn't bail you out. The defense, if the defense doesn't play at that high level against Pittsburgh, you lose that game as well. Now suddenly we're all thinking this past week, and you even said it, this is the breakout game. This is the game where I think he's going to figure it out. Well, Pete, of the seven games, that one was by far the worst. He's the worst starting quarterback in the National Football League. You what his quarterback rating is right now? 63.1. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. No, it was a twenty two twenty se yeah. Glenn Ordway: Number 31 in the league. by the way, the guy behind him at 32 is Cooper Rush. He's no Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: longer starting as Michael Penix is back starting in Atlanta. He's the worst quarterback. He's the worst quarterback in the league, Pete. How is that Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Mm-hmm. And did well. Yeah. Yeah, right right now the the the Glenn Ordway: possible? Pete Sheppard: I don't know. The only th I I d I really don't know. I don't know what has happened to him mentally. And is it correctable? Man, I sure as hell hope so. Are there any guarantees? No. You know, I it you know, I I'd I'd like to I'd like to still have a little bit of faith that it can be corrected, but I need to see it. And that's why again, I will emphasize I'm glad they're playing a great team in Buffalo this week and not some shit team that if he had some stats against, people be like, let's see. and it's on the road, it's at Buffalo. All right, let's see what you got. And i you know, and I I I don't know if you can just wave a magic wand and all of a sudden he's gonna revert back to what he was mid season last year. I have no idea. I hope he does, Glenn Ordway: No, no, that's not gonna happen. Pete Sheppard: but I have n you know, and if he sucks like he did in the first half. Or the game yesterday and it's in the first half, then you gotta ben then you gotta bench him. Then you gotta bench him. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, the one thing, yeah, the one thing I would say about Buffalo is Buffalo is a pretty good football team right now. Josh Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Allen got beat up a little bit in the game, so we'll see what he's like physically come Sunday. But the one thing I'll say about Buffalo, they're going to remember, and I'm sure that Joe Brady is gonna instill Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: it in their head. Do you remember last year when this kid Drake May came into our place it was game five and he Pete Sheppard: Yep. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: whipped our ass? Buffalo also knows that New England took the spotlight away from the Buffalo Bills last year. It was their time, Pete. It Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Yes. Glenn Ordway: was their time to finally shine and win the division, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: right? And instead, the Patriots, the old Patriots, the team that had fallen apart for a few years, prevailed again in the AFC East. I gotta believe that the Bills are going to be super sharp, understanding Pete Sheppard: Hell yeah. Glenn Ordway: the importance of this game. So I think they're gonna face a ton. tougher Buffalo Bills team than I originally thought they would face because the focus. Pete Sheppard: Well, I'm glad and I'm glad. I'm glad they are. I'm glad they are. The Buffalo's gonna come in with a chip on their shoulder. There's no everything you just said. Absolutely. They're gonna remember all that stuff. Good. And and Brady. Drake May's gonna have to remember all of that stuff. I'm sure Josh McDaniels and Vrabel are gonna drill that kind of stuff into his head. You would think they're gonna I mean, you know, we're sitting here talking about it. They're gonna be talking about it. They're gonna be like, you know, don't get they're gonna come out and try to kick the crap out of you after what you did to them last year. You gotta stay and here we go. Ready for this one, Glenn? This is a new theory. You gotta stay within yourself. You gotta stay within yourself. Write that one down. So but Glenn Ordway: Ooh, let me write that one down. You got to stay within yourself. Pete Sheppard: I don't know, even know that. Is that brood competence? I have no idea. I have no idea what to expect. I'm hoping that when I read some of the reports this week, the ones that I that I get to, that he has quote unquote a you know, a good week of practice and that where he is mentally, and not just coach talk, you know. I heard Vrabel this morning a little blurb couple of blurbs on on WEI and it's not yeah, you feel like crap, you feel shitty. It's a bad trip going back from Jacksonville back up to you know, Foxboro. But I need to I I I'm not a hundred percent at I'm not I I don't know if it's correctable. I don't know. I have to I have to wait and see against going up against the best in the in one of the most hostile environments that you can possibly get into with a team that's got in Buffalo that's gonna have a tremendous chip on your shoulder. Here you go, Drake Let's see what you got. Maybe it's a blessing. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, you mentioned Pete Sheppard: Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that all of this happens to him this week. I'll I'll I'm trying to look at it like you do on the film. I'm trying to look at everything. Am I optimistic? Absolutely not. But I'm saying in his head, maybe, maybe this is the kind of motivation he needs. That's all. I'm just throwing that out there. Glenn Ordway: Well, it it's hard to be optimistic about this, though. I think Freddie Smyrla still has the Patriots going seventeen and for the season. Pete Sheppard: No. Glenn Ordway: But you mentioned earlier about Drake May and the things he says. I I think really jaded, and maybe it has something to do with getting away for four or five years from the business, is that all of those things that these guys say, especially after games, are all bullshit. It's all bullshit. It's you can't Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Yeah. They w they're wishy wash. You're right. You're Glenn Ordway: They're saying it because they're obligated to answer questions by the media, but they are also not going to tell you the truth. Okay. And so what we do in the media is we take those clips, we play those clips back, and we say, see, this is what Drake May said. It's all bullshit. It really is. We don't know exactly what this kid is thinking, what is going on in his head right now. And Rabel the same way. Like I did hear the EEI interview Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: with Vrabel. I obviously saw the postgame press conference after the game, and then his Monday press briefing with the with the media down in Foxboro. And he did sound a little shaky. It wasn't the normal confident, cocky, you know, when I walk into the room, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Yep. Glenn Ordway: everybody listens. Mike Vrabel, it was almost like, whoa, you know, we're not sure what's going on. But again, I I think We all read into that crap far too much because it's part of our job as media. let's play this clip. Let's people hear it and then go, wow, what did he what did he just say? I don't think, and you tell me, Pete, you're pretty good at going back into history. I don't think I can ever remember a quarterback, a young one or an older well, an older one maybe, because you would expect the career and the skills would start to deteriorate after they Get past their mid thirties. I don't remember a quarterback, young quarterback, having the type of season that this kid had last year, MVP season, and the next year just totally shitting the bed. I don't do you recall it ever? I don't. Without an injury, without an injury. Pete Sheppard: Well, I again we're talking about three game, and I have to really go back and look. But I remember no, I no and I'm I'm thinking about way, you know, back in the state. I'm thinking about Terry Bradshaw and I'm thinking about Phil Sims, a couple of those guys. That no, no, Glenn Ordway: Yeah, late in their career though, when they were older. Pete Sheppard: Bradshaw earlier. They wanted they wanted him and Chuck Noel out. They wanted them, Pittsburgh wanted them out, you know, before they won four Super Bowls in six years. Bradshaw had a terrible start, and I think into even into his second year, then he finally, you know, kind of found himself. Phil Sims, the same thing. in a lot of way and and I'm sure there's I'm sure there's others out there, but that's that's a but that's it's this was different. They had this is a totally different era. It's hard to compare eras like that. You know, and then but I'm trying I'm trying to I'm trying to I'm trying I'm trying to think, you know, for Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I think the biggest I think I can't think of one. Pete Sheppard: I don't know, Jameis Winston maybe a little bit and we see what he's turned into. I mean he was there was a there was a he had a huge amount of pressure on him coming out of Florida State and Glenn Ordway: yeah. Pete Sheppard: What he was gonna do and he just never really Glenn Ordway: Well, he he he stole the crab meat out of the public's I I Jameis Pete Sheppard: Yeah, yeah, licking his fingers and all that stuff. No, but you're you're right. I mean d I'm I'm sure there's been Glenn Ordway: Winston was I never looked at him having this the type of success that Drake May had last year. I don't remember that. And right now he's a a shell of himself. He's terrible. And that's why, as you pointed out, the Giants added a new quarterback 'cause they have to now. They yeah, they're they're they're in trouble. I I I can't Pete Sheppard: Yeah, no, he would he's yeah, JJ McCarthy and he's probably gonna go because Jameis Winston can't do it. Yeah, but I I so I I the the bottom line is I think we're all waiting, more you know, hoping that this can be corrected. I don't know I don't know if it can. I'm really, really worried about Drake May. And I never thought he'd be saying that after week three, but I am really Well, I w I needed I needed a little bit more. I this Glenn Ordway: You didn't you didn't say it last week. Last week you still were very confident. Pete Sheppard: was worse. This was way worse than I thought that was ever could ever happen. Glenn Ordway: this was much worse. this was much worse. Pete Sheppard: Could ever happen. But now I am saying, I as I reiterate again, I'm glad all this shit is gonna be thrown at him this week in a hostile environment, rather than go to Tennessee and play that team. And he could Glenn Ordway: Pee. Pete Sheppard: where he he could maybe quote unquote find himself. This is everything. This is going up against the best in the w in the in A hostile environment, knowing that that team wants to kill you and kick the shit out of you in this game. And let's see what you got. Let's see what you got up. Let's see what you got up here. Cause as we know, when the shit hits the fan, that's when we find out about a team's true character. And I would say the shit has hit the fan a little bit here. Glenn Ordway: Okay. I want to get in I would say it's a good observation on your part. And you're good at picking out that. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: I I I want to go back to the game yesterday because I want to get into a point about Drake May. I thought the defense got off to a pretty good start in that game yesterday. Okay. Pete Sheppard: Yes, yeah. Glenn Ordway: And I thought they were fairly efficient. they could have had another pick, okay, but they were fairly efficient. They had that one Marcus Jones. And they were looking pretty good. And then suddenly, and you would know better than me, because you're down there in Florida, you know, it's 87 degrees, it's humid as hell. So the the offense can't move the sticks. The defense is out there now for a long period of time. And they start breaking down. They really broke down at the end, that nine minute drive. That Jacksonville had, in which they had like three penalties during the drive and still scored a touchdown, I think was due to game is over plus this heat and humidity. Let's get our ass out of here. But let me let me just finish this Pete Sheppard: Yeah, let let's let's Okay. Glenn Ordway: point about the defense. But I think after she lost the ball, okay, on on in the hand with the blood, the sticky blood, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: I think from that point on the defense started to wilt. And then as he got worse. They got worse. And I'm wondering, Pete, if this affects him, because we heard so much of Mike Vrabel over the summer say the biggest improvement in Drake May is he's a leader now. He has taken over that locker room. He's the guy that they're all listening to. Well, let's face it, you're gonna listen to a guy who's really good, and he was really good last year. So you become a leader because you're really good and you're the main focus of the team in the most important position. But when you start to suck, are you still a leader? Is anybody going to follow you? And I'm wondering if that's not part of this right now that he realizes maybe guys aren't listening to me they the way they were listening to him before. So his leadership skills may be there, but the the role is diminishing mainly because players are saying he sucks. The biggest reason we're losing the game, which is what all the fans Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: And all the media are saying the players are saying the same thing, Pete. The reason we're losing these games, Drake May sucks right right now. They may not say that in public, but privately they're saying that. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. That's deflating. It's deflating. Yeah, I agree. There and d of course the defense, you have to be deflated. Hate to use that term, but you have to be deflated. When you make all these stops and you make Glenn Ordway: you brought back bad memories. Pete Sheppard: you make all these plays, let me debunt a little bit. Yesterday down here in Southwest Florida, look, Jacksonville's five hours from me, five and a half hours from me, north, okay? Yesterday it was about as perfect a day in Fort Myers as you could get. And I told you, even in Jacksonville, it was around It was around the mid 80s. The humidity I've seen a hell of a lot worse than yesterday. It was in the humidity due point of that stuff was like around like I thought would be in the 70s. It was a beautiful out of 10 yesterday down here, I'd say it was an eight and a half or nine. Okay. The humidity was way worse last week, way worse than the week before that. So I'm not, I'm not blaming, I'm blaming the defense getting deflated because of Drake May's play. There's no question about it. And they fought hard as hard as they could. And every time they made stops, there would be another turnover. And it was just absolutely it was it was awful. I don't put the weather one bit into this at all yesterday. Not one, not one bit. Kansas City didn't wilt in Miami. that game was a little closer than people would have thought. That's all Kansas City did cover, but I mean that was that was close for most of that game because there's no there's no taking for granted anybody. And that's why, like you said. Very succinctly, the Jets and the Reds. There's no there's no easy wins for the Patriots. Glenn Ordway: Not anymore. Pete Sheppard: None. None. and for most teams, if you go into the look at Seattle yesterday. Go into Washington with no c and you lose like that. I mean Glenn Ordway: With a with Mariota, with a back up quarterback. Pete Sheppard: come on. So there is you know, th this this other this other you can't take I it's all cliche, but man. You cannot take anybody for granted in this league or you will lose any given Sunday. That is a real term. It and go look at yesterday. Glenn Ordway: And and and and here's what here's what yeah, here's what makes it worse right now in evaluating this team. Because I don't think anybody wants to be one dimensional and blame it all on Drake May, except unfortunately it's all on Drake May. So Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: I would love to sit there and start talking about the defense. And you know, right now Christian Gonzalez is, you know. the best in the league right now. You're seeing it week to week. There's some really good things that are happening. We talked about Elijah Ponder last week, and the defense did some good things during the course of this game. the offensive line, which we were all Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: concerned about. Now, another injury yesterday, the guy we talked about, Dan Rotten, apparently is hurt now as well. But Pete Sheppard: Ugh, that yeah. Yep. Glenn Ordway: I thought just looking and I watched the video again this morning of the game, Will Campbell held up pretty well. Will Campbell's Pete Sheppard: He has most of the year. He has most of the year. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: He's looking, he's looking a lot better, Pete. We can't even get in to the next level topics of the New England Patriots because you're not seeing what Campbell is doing. You're not seeing the the rewards that he's getting out of it, because his quarterback is back in the pocket. The offensive line, even when they give him time back there to throw, he still is making mistakes, poor decisions, taking too much time. So it's so hard to sit there and talk about the other team. It is possible that the rest of this team has a lot of other issues that may show their ugly head here in in the weeks to come. But you can't you can't f you c go ahead. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Well, and I also think it's easy Rex Ryan the other day, Rex Ryan yesterday, you know, they got to become a running team and then immediately I forget who was this. They they ran the ball fine against Pittsburgh, you know. He goes, yeah, well, you take away that one Henderson run. No, that's not fair either, because they did run the ball, except for the Stevenson fumble. So are they gonna become this is what you're gonna hear this week. They need to become a running team, a running team, running team. What does that mean? 50 touches a game between Stevenson and Henderson. Glenn Ordway: I You can't do that in the NFL. Pete Sheppard: I mean, that's not gonna, that's not, that's that's not gonna happen. You gotta you gotta be well balanced in this league to win. You gotta be, you gotta be well for the for the most part. and I I don't know the way that the mind of the quarterback is right now in Drake May. I d I d I really don't know what to expect. I have no I I have Glenn Ordway: I know what his mind is. Pete Sheppard: no idea what to expect on Sunday. Absolutely none. And it's it it I I don't feel good about it. I haven't seen the line yet for the game, but I could imagine Buffalo's probably faded by eight to eleven points in that game. And I'm sure the entire betting public is gonna jump on Buffalo. Wouldn't be surprised to see that line move up to twelve. And I understand it. I completely understand it. This is an enigma. This is not gonna be with Drake May and because you just don't I don't know what to expect. I have no idea what to expect. Can it get wor can it get worse, Glenn, than Sunday? Can it get worse? Glenn Ordway: Well let me so let me let me give you let me give you an example of it where you could be critical of the coaching staff in clock management. So let's go with the end of the first half. So the end of the first half, that was the play we were talking about where he fumbled and he recovered it back again on the very next play after he went in for the touchdown. It was called back on a on a penalty. Okay. So what Brabel's trying to do. Is he's trying to run the football. They run it twice. He's trying to run the football because I think he's trying to limit the amount of time on the clock because you want to score, and then Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: you don't want to give Jacksonville enough time to score because you're getting the first possession of the second half and you want it to double dip. Now, people are questioning what the hell they were doing with clock management at the end of the first half. Well, what Rabel was doing is he was trying to run a normal offensive operation. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: With the clock at the end of the first half. The problem Frebel has, he doesn't have a reliable quarterback to actually execute that. And so that's what happens. He ends up throwing the pick. Bam. Now suddenly you lose that touchdown. And then you come out and you're listless in your first possession of the second half. So instead of getting the double dip, you get no dip. None. Pete Sheppard: Yep. Mhm. Yeah. And look like dipshit. I mean that's what's what what it was. It was awful. Yeah, I absolutely that was the most it was another it was just frustrating all the way. Every time you thought they were gonna make a a move and get back in it, it got nope. It was it was terrible. It was Glenn Ordway: Listen, they played a good team. I'm not taking anything away from Jacksonville. Trevor Lawrence may not be what we thought he was going to be coming out of college, but he's pretty damn good. Okay. And maybe Drake May's going through the same growing pains that Trevor Lawrence went through. I don't know. That's a possibility. A lot of pressure. A lot of pre and Urban Meyer didn't help as his coach for a while. Didn't didn't help. Having a college go right. So, Pete Sheppard: Yep, no, no not possibly. And then it and then we No, every mind that was the worst thing that could happen to Trevor Lawrence is is that a rookie year would have that guy. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: and then Parker Washington is a terrific receiver. He made two great catches Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: yesterday. Tootin's a good running back. I thought their offensive line, at least that's what I was told all week, was their weak spot, especially the interior line. I thought their offensive line held up pretty well. So it was a good football team they played. But here was the strangest thing in the world. Nine minutes left in the game. Jacksonville is up by five scores, whatever the hell it was. And suddenly. Trevor Lawrence runs from about what the nine yard line or something like that. Looked like he could run it into the end zone, and he drops down at the one yard line. And I'm sitting there going, whoa, whoa, what is going on here? Now, normally you see that when there is a couple minutes, one minute left in a football game. Right. You exactly what we were talking about Pete Sheppard: Yeah. You're gonna run off the clock. Yeah. Yep. Glenn Ordway: with halftime, what what Vrabel was trying to do. So you don't want to give them another opportunity, even though. You're light years ahead in the game. Then the game is over. And this is Trevor Lawrence when he's asked about what the hell he was doing. Because I don't know about you, Pete. I don't think I've ever seen a quarterback go down at the one-yard line with nine minutes left in a game. I've never seen it. Pete Sheppard: Bad, bad, bad look for a lot of reasons, and I know you're gonna play the video, I think. Glenn Ordway: Even worse because this is what Trevor Lawrence said after the game. Ooh. Ooh. Pete Sheppard: You can't say that. And I'm not if he's is he gonna get suspended? Wouldn't shock me. I would. It's a billion dollar business. The NBA just says how many lawsuits last year about player props? You can't do that, Trevor. You can't say that. And if the commissioner has any balls, he would suspend him. You can't do it. We're talking this is a multi fantasy football, it's a multi billion dollar business. Now, I had I had Josh Aller as my quarterback. Yes, I do one I do one a week on FanDuel, one game. Glenn Ordway: How'd that work how'd that work out for you yesterday? He was all right? Pete Sheppard: Actually, it wasn't bad. Yeah, I started off slow for him, but he ended up with 19 points. But I ended up, let's put it this way, on a ten-dollar team, I won twenty-two dollars. Big deal. But it was mostly because of the running backs that I had. But but you can't do that. Do you know a j the that Trevor Lawrence anytime touchdown is part of the player props? I mean, people put that in parlays. It is big, big business. You cannot say that in this day and age, the NBA came. There are certain there are certain betting apps. I know Hard Rock talked about it, but other and that's the only one we can use down here, although there's FanDuel and DraftKings now that you can sort of get away with it because they change the terminology and call it offers instead of bets. It's another whole interesting dynamic to it. But there are a lot of apps, there are Glenn Ordway: Everybody's changing the language. Pete Sheppard: a lot of apps that would take and want to take player props bets off the app because of that. You can't do that. And Roger Goodell, he's got to say You gotta see you can't just let it go. And I don't want to hear from everybody. I'm telling you, that is a major fuck up by him saying that. Huge. That costs people a lot, a lot of money. And it's you want Glenn Ordway: I've seen him. Pete Sheppard: to talk about the integrity of the league? That is part, that's the integrity of the league when you say something like that. That is a bad Glenn Ordway: Yeah, there's a there's n Pete Sheppard: look. It's a bad look for him, and it's a bad look for the NFL if people don't talk about it and then we get away with it. Glenn Ordway: It is. It's a bad look and I agree. And it it's the problem. Pete Sheppard: Look at the NBA, Glenn. You know, look what happened in the NBA this past season. Glenn Ordway: Yeah. No, it's Pete, it's a problem when the leagues, who by the way, for many, many years were totally against gambling because they were afraid of issues like this. Okay, it would affect the Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: outcome of games. But then when they found out that it wasn't just the bookies and the underground that could make money on it, that they could make money on it, guess what? They dove in head first and they were all part of it and they Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: welcomed it, loved it. You see the advertisements all over their games. But you're right. When you have players altering, Pete Sheppard: Player props. Yep. Glenn Ordway: you know, I I always go back to the dumbest prop bet I've ever seen in my life. And that is the Super Bowl bet on the length of the national anthem at the beginning of the game. Because we're Pete Sheppard: yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: all around the stadium the the the couple days before the game, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: and we're watching the practice, and all we have to do is take our phone, put a stopwatch on it, and then we've got a bet that we can't lose. There's no way we can lose it. So if you can manipulate this stuff, then the NFL has a problem. Now, my guess is Trevor Lawrence is going to come out and say, I was just joking. It was a joke. Pete Sheppard: Don't matter. Glenn Ordway: But, but, but Pete, nine minutes, eight forty-six or whatever left in the game. Somebody's a historian, a sports historian's got to look this up. I don't think I've ever, ever seen that in the all the years I've watched professional football. Never seen it. Pete Sheppard: No no you're you're right. And he might have he might have been able to get away with it if he didn't open his mouth at the end and say he was Glenn Ordway: Correct. Pete Sheppard: he was talking about fantasy football at the running back get to but you can't do that in this day and age. You simply can't. And if you're gonna c Glenn Ordway: Stubin. Pete Sheppard: if the NBA's gonna come down on players and teams because of it, I don't know how Roger Goodell. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more played. I haven't watched a lot of ESPN 'cause it I can't do it. I just can't watch these shows in the morning for the most part. I can't do it. I I don't know if it's been talked about enough. But it should be, and he should be suspended for saying that. They did it in the NBA. They did it in the NBA. You're manipulating, Glenn Ordway: Yeah, it'll be yeah, be interest it'll be interesting to see Pete Sheppard: you are manipulating a billion dollar industry. And they have come down and other leagues are prop betting. And it's basically you're it's fixed. You're rigging, you're rigging it. It is. And y Glenn Ordway: Fixed you, goof. Pete Sheppard: with nine with nine minutes to go. Two, three minutes to go, obviously you're gonna get you that's fine. We've seen it a million times. But then you c you can't come out and do that at nine minutes left or eight minutes left and then say what you said at the end about, I wanted to give my running back more fantasy points. Bad, bad look. Yep. Glenn Ordway: It'll be interest it'll be interesting to see if the league even mentions it during the course of the week. And I want to get Pete Sheppard: And that's a sh that's a s that's a that's if that doesn't happen, then shame on Roger Goodell again. Glenn Ordway: Well, maybe you could show up at his press conference at this year's Super Bowl. Maybe you could, you know, attack the commissioner like he did in Jacksonville. Maybe you could do that again. Pete Sheppard: Did not I asked a valid question. Glenn Ordway: I don't know how you felt about this. I was excited about a year, year and a half ago. I heard they were putting a movie together with John Madden. And I said, Pete Sheppard: Yes. Glenn Ordway: this there's a lot of great stuff there because Madden is such an interesting, interesting. my Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Iconic personality, yeah. Glenn Ordway: God. You know, plus he had no idea that he would be, you know, a a a pioneer, at least his name, a pioneer in the gaming industry. Okay. And it became Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: the the the biggest thing. In the gaming industry. And so I was really excited when they put the movie together. Then I heard that Nicholas Cage was going to play John Madden. And I said to myself, that seems really strange because every time I've ever seen a Nick Cage movie, even the one where he changes faces, remember that? Yeah. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, with Josh Vivolta, yeah. Face off. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Even that one, it's there's a distinct tone of his voice. You can tell. Pete Sheppard: It it's almost it's almost he has a Shakespearean way of Glenn Ordway: Yes, yes. Pete Sheppard: almost Thurston Hall the Third, of of anunci of enunciating Glenn Ordway: Yeah, it's almost like they dropped him out of the seventeenth century. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: most of his life. Even when he's playing a bad guy, I've seen him in a couple of movies where he's been the bad guy, but he has that way of making himself sound like I'm going to Oxford for for and I Glenn Ordway: Exactly, Pete. It's it's a Pete Sheppard: I thought when I saw that. Clip, which I think you're gonna play. It looks like something out of a Saturday Night Live skit. It looks like that's what it looks like to me. I think Christian Glenn Ordway: So so so Pete Sheppard: Baylor's Al Davis is a good choice. I think he's Glenn Ordway: Yes. Pete Sheppard: gonna do a good job when you see the clip. But this is I'm trying, couldn't they have found and we see actors put on weight all the time or padding, whatever. I'm tell I was thinking, you know, could John Goodman do this? I'm trying to think. Well, I remember in Summer Rental, when Summer Rental came out with John Candy, and there's a scene where his daughter and and the wife go out and all these lifeguards come out and they take their jock straps off the line. I don't know remember the scene. And the guy goes, hey, that guy looks like John Madden. And he did. This is, you know, like 1988. And he did. John Candy, Glenn Ordway: Right. Pete Sheppard: if we were alive, would have been a perfect, perfect John Madden. Glenn Ordway: I I don't think John Goodman, who lost like a hundred and eighty pounds, is gonna put a hundred and eighty pounds back on again. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, yeah, he did. Yeah. That's but you can do patty. I'm trying you know, we saw Robert De Niro as Al Capone, put on like sixty pound I mean, actors can do that. I'm trying to think who would who would you pick? Who would you pick? Glenn Ordway: But the Well, wait a minute. Frank Caliendo, I would put a I would I would put I would put I would put one of those I would put one of those fat suits on him. You know the the the Pete Sheppard: perfect. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: sumo wrestlers? I would put one of those fat suits on him. I don't care if he's only like Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: five seven, five eight, but at least it would sound like him or drop the voice track or something. When when I heard Nicolas Cage, Pete Sheppard: Absolutely. No, that's a that's a great choice. Glenn Ordway: I I couldn't believe it, and I was still excited Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: about this movie until. Till this past weekend I watched this trailer. Pete Sheppard: Yeah I could this is so bad. Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Ooh. my God. Cringeworthy. Really cringeworthy. Alright, so here's why it works. So we paid we paid the hundred and thirty nine bucks thirty for for the subscription to to Amazon. Thank Pete Sheppard: Yeah. F for for yeah, we all we did. Glenn Ordway: God I get next day delivery, you know, after after that. Pete Sheppard: When is it coming when and that's why we'll watch it. That's why, you know, I would never go to the movie theater to see this movie, but that's why we'll watch it because we get Amazon. I remember Amazon what five five, six years ago, Glenn, I think it was like seventy five, eighty bucks. Now it's a hundred and thirty three. But Glenn Ordway: Something like that. So so the the reason Christian Bale works Pete Sheppard: yeah. Glenn Ordway: is because every time you see a movie that Christian Bale is in, he looks totally different. Okay? And his voice is totally different when he's in a movie. So it's not like Pete Sheppard: Yes. Yeah. He's not Batman. Glenn Ordway: distinctive where you can sit there and say, that's Christian Bale, because I see him all the time. Nicholas Cage has a very distinct voice and he Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: obviously was unsuccessful in changing it. He tried, because actually they've got him Through the prosthetics and whatever, they've got him looking a little bit like John Madden. I can almost buy into that. But my solution, Pete, when you said who would play it, I would have tried to find an unknown actor. An unknown actor that nobody has ever. There have been actors that have made their entire career coming from absolutely nowhere and playing a role. Okay? James Cannon, the the Sopranos. Yes. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Sylvester Stallone's one of them. Sylvester Stallone's one of Yeah, yeah. James Candle Pini. But James never Glenn Ordway: Correct. Pete Sheppard: did a whole bunch of big movies after that. And there were not a lot of movies that he did after that. But certainly I maybe they could r dub Frank Calliandel's voice into Nicholas Cage. I mean, Frank, I'm serious, Frank, that's not a bad idea. I think that's a great idea. Cause he cut he they Glenn Ordway: It's too late. It's too late. It's too late. Pete Sheppard: could have made him look like John, what do you what what does it take? Of oversized Sansibell slacks. We don't use the word slacks anymore. And that shirt, that's, you know, that, you know, you still you see a lot of older fat golfers down here, I'm sure in Arizona, have the same type of look. You know, the slacks, the Sansibell thing. Why couldn't Frank Calendo pull that off? He could have done it. Glenn Ordway: Another word, by the way, another word that has gone by the wayside as we change the language in America. Slacks. I always like the word slacks. Can't do that. Well, Pete Sheppard: I said it slacks slacks. Glenn Ordway: they're not doing it, and the movie's gonna come out. It'll be out Thanksgiving and we'll we'll see what happens at the time. We told you when we started doing this that we would always retrieve back to some old stories and dig up some old bones, Pete Sheppard: I like stories. Glenn Ordway: okay? in the in the graveyard. And I want to bring up one today because people remember Bill Simmons. Simmons has become a big huge writer, did TV. He's made an awful lot of money, Pete. He has made a fortune Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: over the years. You know, he was working doing writing for Jimmy Kimmel show for a while, and then he got an HBO deal. That show, that show was bad. But he got these deals. He Pete Sheppard: Very talented. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: got he was on the NBA deal. broadcast, if you remember. And he was there with Magic Johnson and others on the set talking NBA basketball. So I mean, I'm not whatever we're about to say, obviously it has not affected Bill Simmons' career one iota. But he used to be the Boston sports guy. He was working for is that AOL, I think, at the time. You know, remember AOL? I think it was AOL that he was working, but he was doing the Pete Sheppard: Can't remember, but yeah. This is twenty five years ago. We're going back twenty five years. Yeah. Mm. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, he was the Boston sports guy. Yeah. So we're going back to yes, around two thousand. And we were thinking about having him on the show. He was infatuated with our show to to the degree of neg all negativity. He hated the show. At least that's what he presented in his column that he couldn't stand what we were doing in the shtick. It doesn't work. But he was constantly, you know, ripping us apart. But If you knew anything about the show and the people that we brought on, we wanted to have antagonists. We wanted to have people that we could go at, okay? Because Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: we wanted disruption on the show. We wanted a little bit of tension on the show. So we all sat around one day and said, We got to get this Bill Simmons kid on the show. Maybe try him out as a co-host. And I think Andy at the time said, No, he was our producer, Andy Massow. He said, No, we're not gonna bring him on as a a co-host, but if you want to bring him on as a guest, maybe we'll bring him on as a guest. And I think you Andy wanted to punch him in the face. Pete Sheppard: Cause Andy wanted to punch him in the face. Glenn Ordway: So you and I made the decision that, no, maybe we should try to get him on as a co host, but why don't we do this? Why don't we bring him on as a guest and see what he's like, and then we'll bring him on as a co host. Now, this was around the time that the Patriots were in that Super Bowl, the two thousand and one Super Bowl. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, there this is after nine eleven. This is after nine eleven, which plays Glenn Ordway: Correct. Pete Sheppard: into this. Glenn Ordway: Correct. So yes. So it is February now. We're in New Orleans. And one day we're all sitting there and we're half shit faced at Patty O'Brien's. If you Patty O'Brien's, they bring those tall red drinks or whatever they're stuck all sugar, it's all fruit and alcohol. And Pete Sheppard: Hurricanes. Yeah, back then, yeah. Yep. Glenn Ordway: we're, you know, we're all, you know, feeling pretty good. you know. And the next thing you know, Bill Simmons walks into the bar by himself. And he comes over and says, Hey guys, how are you? And we look at each other. Pete Sheppard: What Glenn Ordway: hey, how are you, Bill? And then next thing you know, he starts talking to us and engaging in conversation like there's never been anything negative that he has ever said or written about us. And so finally, at one point, I don't know if it was Andy or you, said to him, Why the fuck do you write all this negative shit about us? And he said, Don't worry about that, guys. I love you guys. I just do that because it plays to my crowd. Pete Sheppard: Yeah, but remember the but the part that really aggravated us, you and and me, and especially Andy, was how he ripped us during our coverage of nine eleven, which was some of the best coverage Glenn Ordway: He did. Pete Sheppard: they had. I didn't care what he said about me personally, or you about the show, prof all that stuff. When he he attacked us about how we handled nine eleven, which I thought Glenn Ordway: He did. Pete Sheppard: we like I've told you in the past, it was a phenomenal job that you did. And I think all of us did in the station did handling that situation. And I think he just could not get past that. And I said something to him. I'm like, get the fuck out of here. Andy, Andy was really walked towards Glenn Ordway: And he wanted to punch him out. Pete Sheppard: him. Andy's, you know, taller than me and bigger. And at the time I was probably 80, I was probably I Glenn Ordway: He's bigger than you maybe now, yeah. Pete Sheppard: was probably 80 pounds heavier and stuff. But I was like, you know, go, go, get the fuck out of here and go over. And he he went into the feet. Freddie was there. Do you remember who else was there with us that night? Real quick. What's his name who got the game winning hit for Arizona in the World Series? That little guy, what's his name? I forget. Wasn't Gonzalez? I can't remember. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I said he was, yes. Yes. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: He happened he was there with us by accident, just a coincidence, you know. And and it was me, you, Freddie, Andy, and then Bill and I think gets out and then Bill Simmons comes over and tries to ingratiate himself from the conversation. That lasted Glenn Ordway: It was it was Pete Sheppard: about three minutes and then off he went to the fetal position because Yep. Glenn Ordway: It was it was it was so unbelievable to me. And I'm sitting there basically and I you know, he just kept on going, No, guys, I love your show. I love what you guys do. And I do remember you saying to him, Well, I don't like what you said about us about 9-11. You know, you want to say that I'm fat, you wanna say I'm an idiot. You Pete Sheppard: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Glenn Ordway: can do all that, but what you said about 9-11, and I I remember, and I'm listening to him and I'm saying, What a hypocrite. He rips the shit out of us. And then in our presence, when he's got to face us, and I don't know, maybe he was a little frightened because Fred was there, you were there, and he was a little intimidated, but he suddenly was our best friend. Pete Sheppard: Mm. And Andy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: He was our best friend. And then you're right, he he was like clinging to us. He wouldn't leave, and we finally said, you know, we ignored him, and he finally went away. And it it it And at that point we said, we can't put him on the air. He's a hypocrite. I lost all respect for him because I think he's a really good writer, Pete. He he writes too Pete Sheppard: Yeah, yes, absolutely. Glenn Ordway: long. I I've read, you know, at least one of his books, the NBA book. Yes. He writes too long. Even his columns Pete Sheppard: That book, that that manifesto he wrote, that's eight million pages long, it makes the Bible look like, you know, some kindergarten read. Glenn Ordway: go far too long, but he is a great writer. I, you know, I I I do, Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: and I've even said that to him over the years. Pete Sheppard: Absolutely is, yeah. Glenn Ordway: Even though I know he's a total hypocrite in the way now, maybe he's different now because he's, you know, built up so much cachet and he's a name. At that time nobody knew who he was. He was this little Boston sports guy Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: on AOL. And obviously he became a big sports celebrity through all of this stuff. But years later, I don't know if you remember this, you were probably I think you were maybe gone when this happened. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Glenn Ordway: Is that Bill and I had a a conversation through the station because He was at ESPN. We were in an ESPN station, and Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: the executives of our place and ESPN talked about let's get Bill on with Glenn, and they will make up after all of this. Because we did tell this story shortly after the Super Bowl in the 2001 Super Bowl about Bill Simmons being a little weenie and coming up to us and Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Yeah, we did. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: kissing our ass, which was embarrassing. So years later, we hadn't Spoken a word. Years later, the executives get together and say, let's get the two of them together. It'll be a great promotion. We'll build it up the whole works. So Simmons is scheduled to come on. It might have been a Tuesday afternoon. Scheduled to come on at three o'clock. We're promoting it all day. We promote it at two o'clock when we get on. An hour from now, Bill Simmons is going to be here in studio and we'll talk it out. An hour later, Bill Simmons shows up. At Felger studio, Felger and Man's studio, and says, Hey, can I come on your show? Felger's got no idea what's going on. Felger says, Well, yeah, I guess so. Not being aware. And it doesn't surprise me that Felger was not aware of what we were doing across Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yep. Glenn Ordway: the street. So he says, Sure, come on in the in the studio and we'll we'll we'll put you on. So they get him on the studio, and the first thing that Simmons does. Because he wants to stick it to me one more time. He comes out and he says, The only reason I'm here is because I was scheduled to go on with Ordway at three o'clock. And I said, Screw it. I'm gonna go on with the best sports talk show in the city. I'm gonna go on with you. Felger's response was, Why the hell would you do something like that? Now, Felger's credit, Felger basically said to him, It's kind of a cheap thing to do. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: What the hell are you doing? So that was my last encounter with Bill Simmage, yeah. Pete Sheppard: I had forgotten about that, but now I remember. Now I remember that was that Glenn Ordway: Yep. Pete Sheppard: would made headlines. Glenn Ordway: And yeah, it did. It was it was I even, I believe, in the New York Post, because Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: it was revealed that the executives of ESPN and Intercom had had a new working relationship. They had just signed a new contract to put ESPN on all their stations across the country. They were now going to kind of bring together the symmetry of ESPN and Intercom, and Bill Simmons just blew it up in one afternoon. Yeah. Pete Sheppard: What a douche. I mean really was. That was a douche move. Glenn Ordway: And I was willing and I was willing to, you know, to stake out the hand and I I I I'm not one of those people, you know, Eddie Enderman went to his grave with a lot of grudges. I I'm not gonna go to my grave with a lot of grudges. I don't I I it it's not worth it, Pete. Pete Sheppard: Yeah. No. That's not worth it. And nor should you. Especially if we have the petty stuff that went on at our place for some people. And it just Glenn Ordway: We got we got more shows to do, so save some of those petty things that you Pete Sheppard: Can I st can I can I give can I get back to New Orleans a story? This is about Glenn Ordway: Go ahead. Pete Sheppard: about you. So there was I I told it in episode one about you and Fred. You forgot to set your watch, you were an hour late. But when we were now remember, we had to stay. Glenn Ordway: Do hold hold on, hold on. Do me a favor. Do not repeat stories every week, okay? That that that Pete Sheppard: I'm not repeating that sorry. Glenn Ordway: that is gonna give people the impression we're already old enough. People are gonna sit there and say, these old senior citizens, you know. Pete Sheppard: No. No, no, no. This is another part. This is another this is at the end end of the week. Now we met we had to stay an extra, was it two days or one because of flight? I don't know what happened, but we the last I think we left on a Tuesday after the Super Bowl instead of the Monday. Remember, there was all sorts of flight. Mardi Gras was starting, and we had we Glenn Ordway: Pete. Pete. Pete. Pete Sheppard: were the only ones in the convention. Anyway, the next morning. Glenn Ordway: hold on, Pete. You know what you know what probably happened? It was a cheaper flight on Tuesday versus the flight on Monday. It was probably half Pete Sheppard: Problem. Glenn Ordway: the price and the company said, We'll keep you in the hotel and then Tuesday you can check out. It'll be a lot cheaper flight. Pete Sheppard: But we have but I remember we had to do the show from like a a closet or something. I don't know. Anyway, the next morning we stay overnight and I think it was a holiday in, kind of on Bourbon Street, right there. We and you know, it's we gotta be at the airport by like seven. So I'm up early. I'm always up early. I don't the one thing you can say a lot about me, one thing is I never am is late. I am not late ever. If it anything I'm early. Andy and I are downstairs. Where's Glenn? You weren't there. And after after like quarter seven, I'm like, uh-uh, we gotta go. I go, we're gonna miss the flight, we gotta go. And we tried to call the room, you weren't there. We tried to tried to call, I forget why, we could not get hold of you. I said, well, we'll leave a note at the front, just say, you know, our colleague Glenn, we we we're gone. You get to the airport with us and you say you said to Andy and I, you start, you were upset, you're like, Pete, Andy. You never leave a business associate. You can't leave a business associate behind. And I'm like, Glenn, we tried calling you, did but you know, I tried to get a hold of you, but but we weren't gonna wait. We're gonna miss the damn. We're gonna but you can't leave a business associate. I'm like, well, I mean, you're a big boy. You can get to the airport by yourself, you know. It's not like we weren't there. It happened another time where you thought I was gonna be late coming home after 2003 at Yankee Stadium, but I'll tell that story another time. I was I was so Glenn Ordway: Save that one. Pete Sheppard: I was so pissed I just left early. I just left as as early as I could. But anyway, that's another story for another time. Yeah. Don't leave a business associate. You can't leave a business associate. Glenn Ordway: Yeah. But see then I I that was part of my job is not only to be part of the program, but to be the man that can that can, you know, teach you youngins some some of the things you don't leave a business associate. You don't do that. I was trying to help you out in life. All right, before we close out, Pete Pete Pete Sheppard: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: brought up the name of a restaurant down in Jacksonville, Florida. Pete Sheppard: Yes. Glenn Ordway: on on the show last week. And we had people on Twitter sit there and say, Pete made that up. And he's obviously trying to lay out like a racist thing or something Pete Sheppard: Yeah, yeah. Glenn Ordway: like that. And so thank God we did have one of our viewers on YouTube who said, Nope. Pete was telling the absolute truth. Matter of fact, I live in Jacksonville and Pete Sheppard: It Glenn Ordway: I go to this restaurant. It the food it the the place is kind of dirty. Pete Sheppard: It's a takeout stand. I don't even think it's a restaurant. There it is. A chininy tea Glenn Ordway: But the food the food's not the food is not bad. This is the name of the restaurant. It is Jing's Chiny Takey Audi. Yes. Pete Sheppard: And the crack the crackhole hotel is a little like if you look to your left, there it is, probably about fifty yards away about fifty Glenn Ordway: Crack Hotel's right to the left, yeah. Pete Sheppard: yards away. Yep. Yep. Glenn Ordway: So that is funny. Pete Pete was accused of just making up racist shit to get you Pete Sheppard: So Glenn Ordway: know, to get you know, not ratings but viewers, right? And Pete Sheppard: We brought this up back in the day, 20 and and people still believe us. And Andy put that same Glenn Ordway: It's a real story. Pete Sheppard: picture up back then, you know, but it kind of faded. I brought it up on my old show. And it's like it people still think I make it up. This is a real place. You can't make this stuff up. Yeah. What does that tell Glenn Ordway: They're Pete, they're still they're still in business, Pete. Still in business. Well, I don't Pete Sheppard: you? Glenn Ordway: if I remember correctly, and I don't know what the statistics are, but I wouldn't guess there's a huge Asian population in Jacksonville. So they're appealing to, you know, the average redneck that's in in southern Georgia, because that's what Jacksonville is. It's now I offended a whole other group. I apologize for that. Pete Sheppard: Well that's a that well you've been to Savannah, Georgia. That's a beautiful part of Georgia. That's yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Well that's a that's that's that's real Georgia, southern Georgia over the and the Florida, you know, line is that's crazy. All right, Pete, let's see if Drake May finally figures this shit out. what do you think the chances are he figures it out? Pete Sheppard: Less than fifty percent. Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Pete Sheppard: But hey, I've been wrong before. This is a crazy you know, once you think you have and it doesn't matter about the Patriots, it could be once you think you have this league figured out, you don't have it figured out. So I I don't I I know what we have seen and it's not good. There is a regression, there's a lack of confidence, extreme lack of confidence it seems. But I've also learned over the years, no matter what team I'm talking about, once you count that team out for dead. Or that player out for dead. Not all the time, but sometimes the Glenn Ordway: That's true. True. Pete Sheppard: y you go, geez. You know, we couldn't have been more wrong. I'm hoping in five or six weeks we're gonna look back at ourselves after week three and go, God, concerns legitimate, but we were way off. I'm hoping that's the case. I'm hoping Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I think I Pete Sheppard: that's the case. Glenn Ordway: I think it's more likely four or five weeks we feel that way versus coming up this Sunday. Okay. I Pete Sheppard: That's fine. And that's fine. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: I I do. But you're right. Stranger things have happened. And the one thing that I'm not willing to put the nails in the coffin on Drake May's career is that we've already seen what he can do. We didn't see a raw version of Drake May last year in which we said, he's got great potential. No, no, no. We saw a 23-year-old that looked like he was a fairly completed project of quarterback in the National Football League. I just don't know how you go from that to when you turn 24, you turn into a pumpkin. But that's going to do it for this week. Petey, I'll see you next week. Pete Sheppard: Mm-hmm. All right, but Glenn Ordway: coming up later on this week, Kirk Minahan will join us here in the big old podcast. Should be quite interesting to Pete Sheppard: Tell him I said hello. Glenn Ordway: say the least.
