Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Don't Let Comparison Steal Your Joy
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily A Body here you are listening to
- 0:23Speaker 1: five minute Friday from Hurdle. I can't believe I'm saying this,
- 0:28Speaker 1: but this is the last episode in season seven. Geez,
- 0:32Speaker 1: time time feels like it is moving at warp speed
- 0:37Speaker 1: and also at times super super slow. And I say
- 0:42Speaker 1: that sitting in my bedroom at my mom's house, which
- 0:46Speaker 1: still has things on the shelves from when I graduated college.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I see my high school yearbook on the shelf, my
- 0:53Speaker 1: yukon your book. I didn't even know I got a
- 0:55Speaker 1: yukon your book.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Man.
- 0:59Speaker 1: It's kind of crazy, right. The season itself packed with
- 1:02Speaker 1: so much goodness, so grateful for so many of the
- 1:05Speaker 1: awesome conversations. And I'd love it if you have a
- 1:08Speaker 1: specific guest or topic that you want to hear from
- 1:10Speaker 1: or about in season eight, which will kickstart a week
- 1:15Speaker 1: from this Monday. I'm all years, so Fiel to reach
- 1:18Speaker 1: out to us over on email or DM. Email is
- 1:21Speaker 1: hello at Hurdle dot us and DM always over at
- 1:25Speaker 1: Hurdle podcast, and I am over at Emily A Body.
- 1:28Speaker 1: But on this note of recognizing where you are now,
- 1:32Speaker 1: perhaps and maybe feeling a little bit sentimental, so this
- 1:36Speaker 1: morning freshly recording this on Thanksgiving for all of you.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I ran the Peaquot Runners Turkey Trot, which happens since
- 1:44Speaker 1: South Work, Connecticut. I've been running this race. We figured
- 1:47Speaker 1: out at our post race diner breakfast. This is my
- 1:50Speaker 1: fourth time. I feel like I've been doing it for
- 1:53Speaker 1: much longer than that. But again time it's fleeting, and
- 1:58Speaker 1: I yesterday before this morning, took a look at my
- 2:01Speaker 1: last three races, and I'll never forget how amped I
- 2:06Speaker 1: was the first time I ran this race, because I
- 2:08Speaker 1: ran it in sub eight minute splits, and for me,
- 2:11Speaker 1: that was like I always think back when something like
- 2:15Speaker 1: that happens, and it feels really landmark to the girl
- 2:17Speaker 1: that could barely run a mile, in fact, she couldn't
- 2:22Speaker 1: at that time, and the girl that was working her
- 2:26Speaker 1: butt off to learn how to excel at this thing
- 2:29Speaker 1: that she was told for so long that she just
- 2:31Speaker 1: couldn't do. I was looking at these races in these
- 2:36Speaker 1: times and feeling really proud of the progression each year
- 2:39Speaker 1: back to back being faster than the last. The last
- 2:43Speaker 1: time I ran this race two years ago because of
- 2:45Speaker 1: the COVID hiatus, I did it in like something like
- 2:48Speaker 1: seven to fifteen splits like just bizarre to me. And
- 2:52Speaker 1: so yesterday I sat down and I kind of like
- 2:55Speaker 1: gauged my expectations and set the bar at a realistic place,
- 2:58Speaker 1: because I reckon is that right now I am not
- 3:02Speaker 1: the Emily who ran that Turkey Trot two years ago.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I am a different version of myself, and that's not
- 3:09Speaker 1: for the worst, right It doesn't mean that I am
- 3:13Speaker 1: in I don't know, doing not well or whatever, because
- 3:17Speaker 1: I can't make this negative trend continue right now. But
- 3:21Speaker 1: having come off of the New York Marathon, having not
- 3:24Speaker 1: really been running for the last few weeks, it would
- 3:27Speaker 1: have been a complete anomaly if I showed up in Southport,
- 3:30Speaker 1: Connecticut today and went out there and ran five miles
- 3:33Speaker 1: at a sub seven to fifteen pace. And this really
- 3:36Speaker 1: has nothing to do with pace or the numbers, but
- 3:39Speaker 1: rather me showing up there today and being good with that.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I think that it's really easy for us to compare
- 3:47Speaker 1: ourselves to a version of our former selves, but in
- 3:50Speaker 1: doing that we could potentially rob ourselves of the joy
- 3:55Speaker 1: of the living in right now. And so rather than
- 3:58Speaker 1: get caught up in oh, well, people are going to
- 4:01Speaker 1: see how fast I ran this, and blah, blah blah
- 4:04Speaker 1: blah blah, like, no, you know what I want to remember.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I want to remember having fun in the moments as
- 4:11Speaker 1: they pass, instead of stressing out about these unrealistic expectations,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I want to enjoy the things that are happening. And
- 4:19Speaker 1: that's exactly what I did this morning. Although it definitely
- 4:22Speaker 1: felt like an effort, but I had a great time,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and I was just so grateful to be in this place,
- 4:29Speaker 1: back at a Turkey trot after everything that was last
- 4:33Speaker 1: year and not having these things, being surrounded by people
- 4:37Speaker 1: and happiness and family and having my mom there. It
- 4:41Speaker 1: was a really beautiful morning. And if I had been
- 4:44Speaker 1: focused on that time and what was and comparing myself, well,
- 4:53Speaker 1: I don't think I would have the same experience. I
- 4:55Speaker 1: also will say this that while I was running this morning,
- 4:59Speaker 1: I thought a lot of about the run that I
- 5:01Speaker 1: had a few weeks ago with the New York Marathon,
- 5:03Speaker 1: and how I was a little bit wrapped up in
- 5:06Speaker 1: the previous version of me. Right and again, comparison is
- 5:11Speaker 1: the thief of joy. So I recognize that that New
- 5:16Speaker 1: York City Marathon experience, and I'll throw the show the
- 5:19Speaker 1: episode recap, excuse me from the marathon in the show
- 5:22Speaker 1: notes today. But I recognize now and I learned a
- 5:26Speaker 1: really important lesson that day, and that I owe it
- 5:29Speaker 1: to myself to just be more in the moment and
- 5:32Speaker 1: stop worrying so much about what other people may think
- 5:37Speaker 1: or feel or whatever about whatever it is that I'm doing,
- 5:41Speaker 1: because I know that as long as my heart's in
- 5:43Speaker 1: the right place and I'm pushing forward and I'm following
- 5:47Speaker 1: my ethics and my morals and I'm just trying to
- 5:49Speaker 1: be a good person and treating myself with the kindness
- 5:53Speaker 1: that I hope that other people treat me well, then
- 5:56Speaker 1: I'm doing something right. Prompter you this week, when was
- 6:03Speaker 1: the last time that you let comparison steal your joy?
- 6:07Speaker 1: And what is one thing that you can do to
- 6:09Speaker 1: spark joy over the next twenty four hours? Again a
- 6:13Speaker 1: little reflection moment. When was the last time you let
- 6:16Speaker 1: comparison steal your joy? And how can you spark joy
- 6:20Speaker 1: over the next twenty four hours? And now a listener question.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Hey, Emily, Sarah and upstate New York here. Now, I
- 6:28Speaker 2: held off on sending you a voicemail question because I
- 6:31Speaker 2: wanted it to be something profound, But you want a
- 6:34Speaker 2: question So your hat collection has been awful inspiring, and
- 6:40Speaker 2: I've finally purchased my first hat, but now I have
- 6:43Speaker 2: no idea how to sile it. It looks so cute.
- 6:46Speaker 2: But am I allowed to wear it inside? Do I
- 6:48Speaker 2: wear it when I'm driving my car? I'm a little confused.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Little helps, Sarah.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I love this question, and to be honest, I wish
- 6:57Speaker 1: more questions came in my way that we're in, you know, activity, fitness,
- 7:02Speaker 1: running related. So if you are listening to this right now,
- 7:04Speaker 1: whether or not you are, Sarah, please feel free to
- 7:07Speaker 1: leave me a voice message and ask me about anything
- 7:10Speaker 1: from hats to relationships to New York City. You get
- 7:14Speaker 1: the vibes anyway, man, I have really over the last
- 7:17Speaker 1: few years, as you may know if you follow me
- 7:19Speaker 1: or on Instagram, because I've become a hat person. And
- 7:23Speaker 1: the answer to your questions, yes you can wear it inside,
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yes you can wear it driving your car. You can
- 7:28Speaker 1: wear it with your hair down, you can wear it
- 7:30Speaker 1: with your hair up. The most important thing to wearing
- 7:33Speaker 1: a hat is that you feel confident in your hat.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And I think that this is I mean, as with
- 7:37Speaker 1: any piece of clothing or style, right like you all
- 7:41Speaker 1: that matters is that you feel good in it.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Now.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I like to wear mine most often with my hair
- 7:47Speaker 1: down and like wavy or in a low bun. And
- 7:50Speaker 1: if I'm wearing a hat, I try to keep like
- 7:53Speaker 1: other elements of my outfit, like maybe a little bit muted,
- 7:56Speaker 1: because I recognize that the hat is a statement piece.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I think, I don't know. Those would be my top tips. Also,
- 8:03Speaker 1: if you have dark hair, I always opt for like
- 8:06Speaker 1: lighter colored hats, Like I don't own a black felt hat,
- 8:10Speaker 1: but I have a slew of other colors like sage
- 8:13Speaker 1: green and maroon and tan and mustard, so you get
- 8:18Speaker 1: what I'm saying here. Other hat tip, you can definitely
- 8:24Speaker 1: wear it in all weather, but I would be a
- 8:26Speaker 1: little bit wary of wearing it in the rain just
- 8:29Speaker 1: because it can get a little funky in the shape situation.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And I think that's it. But if you have more
- 8:35Speaker 1: hat questions and you got specifics, I'm here to help Gigpip,
- 8:40Speaker 1: where I get a lot of my hats. They're not
- 8:41Speaker 1: a sponsor, but I'm a huge fan of theirs, and
- 8:43Speaker 1: they are having a ten percent off sale. If you
- 8:46Speaker 1: are listening to this Black Friday to Cyber Monday, I
- 8:49Speaker 1: will link to them in the show notes so that
- 8:51Speaker 1: you can go and snack one for yourself. My favorite
- 8:54Speaker 1: style from them, it's called the Zephyr Rancher. I think
- 8:57Speaker 1: I have at least three. That's it, y'all. I hope
- 9:00Speaker 1: you had a great Thanksgiving. I hope that you're finding
- 9:03Speaker 1: some time for yourself and relaxing a little bit and
- 9:07Speaker 1: just finding the gratitude and also the giving in this
- 9:11Speaker 1: season over at Hurdle Podcast and at Emily a Body,
- 9:15Speaker 1: another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
