- 0:04SPEAKER_04: Welcome.
- 0:06Don Armstrong: From the Dual City Studios in Texas, USA, it's the award-winning in-wheel time car talk show.
- 0:11Don Armstrong: Just ahead, Jennifer Jordan on the hot rod build-off.
- 0:16Don Armstrong: All right.
- 0:17Don Armstrong: Jeff will have the cruise in an events calendar.
- 0:20Don Armstrong: Mr.
- 0:20Don Armstrong: Mars is going to get to his hiking in Houston driving destinations segment.
- 0:25Don Armstrong: And I'll bring you stories making automotive news this week.
- 0:28Don Armstrong: Howdy, along with Mike Out of This World Mars, we always need more Jeff Zeke, master studio, and transmitter engineer David Ainsley.
- 0:37Don Armstrong: I'm Don Armstrong.
- 0:38Don Armstrong: So glad that you could join us on this Saturday.
- 0:40Don Armstrong: If you're listening on a podcast, thank you very much.
- 0:43Don Armstrong: We appreciate that as well.
- 0:45Don Armstrong: All right, let's get to our first guest, and that is Jennifer Jordan, partner in the Mother Cluckers store in Victoria, and troublemaker with the Hellions Car Club.
- 0:57Don Armstrong: Jennifer, I mean, the list goes on and on.
- 0:59Don Armstrong: You're you've got your fingers in the pie and lots of stuff here.
- 1:02Don Armstrong: It's a bad girl.
- 1:03SPEAKER_04: That's right, that's right.
- 1:06Don Armstrong: Well, it's it's great to have you uh with us this morning.
- 1:10Don Armstrong: And uh so let's talk about your background and uh car club, uh Hellion's hot rod riot and and the this hot rod build-off that you've got going on.
- 1:21Don Armstrong: Uh let's talk about that.
- 1:22Don Armstrong: That's coming up in November, but um I understand that June 1st is when the build-off starts.
- 1:29Don Armstrong: Am I correct?
- 1:30Mike Marrs: Yes, you are correct.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:36Don Armstrong: Okay, and and and who and who is that who is that hairy man sitting next to you?
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: Victoria.
- 1:48Don Armstrong: Mr.
- 1:48Don Armstrong: Mars, we're we're losing.
- 1:50Don Armstrong: Yeah, but we have a problem receiving your signal off of your cell phone, so you guys are gonna need to go outside or something.
- 1:57Don Armstrong: So, Mr.
- 1:58Don Armstrong: Mars, we'll let you handle that uh while uh uh while we uh uh move on with this and and actually uh tell you a little bit about Jennifer.
- 2:07Don Armstrong: She's a mother of four, uh two girls, two boys, also a grandmother to four wonderful kiddos, uh originally from Victoria, Texas.
- 2:15Don Armstrong: Trey and uh she uh own Jordan Speed Shop, where they say that they'll do anything from minor repairs to frame off restorations.
- 2:24Don Armstrong: That's always a scary thing that they'll do anything.
- 2:26Don Armstrong: Yeah, I like it.
- 2:27Don Armstrong: Frame off.
- 2:28Don Armstrong: Uh Bestie uh uh and uh her bestie owns a retail store in downtown Victoria that she's uh cloned as mother cluckers downtown.
- 2:40Don Armstrong: I like the name.
- 2:41Don Armstrong: So uh very busy woman.
- 2:43Don Armstrong: Um she's also the Victoria chapter president of the Hellions, which is a car club.
- 2:48Don Armstrong: Um, and uh I'm not exactly sure.
- 2:52Don Armstrong: And when we get her back online here, we'll talk to her about this.
- 2:55Don Armstrong: Jimmy and his wife Marcel own affordable towing out of Victoria, Texas.
- 3:00Don Armstrong: They're huge supporters of the local car club scene down there.
- 3:04Don Armstrong: So uh interesting uh to have her on there with us.
- 3:08Don Armstrong: Um so a little bit about this build-off that they've got uh in the 2026 riot uh show that they're gonna have.
- 3:17Don Armstrong: It's uh five months to build this thing with a$4,000 limit.
- 3:21Don Armstrong: Yep.
- 3:22Don Armstrong: I can't even imagine that.
- 3:24Don Armstrong: Um do you have what it takes?
- 3:26Don Armstrong: Think you can build the baddest ride on a budget?
- 3:29Don Armstrong: Uh now's your chance to prove it according to the flyer that they sent us here.
- 3:33Don Armstrong: And uh so five months to build, four thousand dollar total budget, no excuses, no shortcuts, uh just raw creativity.
- 3:41Don Armstrong: And um the all I can think of is there's a guy that's on the uh hot rod tour, uh, which we weren't there this year.
- 3:49Don Armstrong: This past year, right?
- 3:50Don Armstrong: Yeah, but uh the smoking yeah, they're uh their diesel club.
- 3:56Jeff Dziekan: Diesel club out on the rolling smoke or rolling coal or something, black black smoke babies, something like that.
- 4:01Don Armstrong: Yeah, and uh so they took an old pickup truck uh with an old body, put it on a decent frame that could handle all the torque of a diesel engine, and then they just kept working on it and working massaging it, yeah, and all that sort of stuff.
- 4:16Don Armstrong: And it looks like hell.
- 4:18Don Armstrong: But I don't know how else to put it.
- 4:20Jeff Dziekan: You know, but that's part of the look.
- 4:22Jeff Dziekan: Five months to do it.
- 4:22Jeff Dziekan: Now, five that's a good time.
- 4:24Jeff Dziekan: That's a good time frame.
- 4:25Jeff Dziekan: Four grand hours is that four thousand dollars that you're putting into an existing vehicle?
- 4:30Jeff Dziekan: That's your limit, or that's the total with the car and the build.
- 4:35Jeff Dziekan: We'll find out.
- 4:36Jeff Dziekan: They're back on.
- 4:37Jeff Dziekan: Here we go.
- 4:37Don Armstrong: All right, Mr.
- 4:38Don Armstrong: Mars.
- 4:38Don Armstrong: Uh let's questions.
- 4:39Don Armstrong: Yeah, we we hope hopefully got you got better signaled now.
- 4:42Don Armstrong: So there you go.
- 4:43Don Armstrong: We we've read through the entire flyer that you sent us, and we appreciate that.
- 4:48Don Armstrong: And we gave everybody a rundown about who you are, Jennifer.
- 4:51Don Armstrong: So um you're in trouble now.
- 4:57unknown: Okay.
- 4:58Don Armstrong: Still having problems with that.
- 4:59Don Armstrong: Um anyway, so continue on with what you were saying.
- 5:02Jeff Dziekan: Well, yeah, because if it's just the money that you're allowed to put into it, so you got an existing car.
- 5:07Jeff Dziekan: There's a Corvette in the garage back here.
- 5:09Jeff Dziekan: Corvette in that thing.
- 5:10Jeff Dziekan: No, put a diesel in that, tub it out.
- 5:13Don Armstrong: Yeah, no.
- 5:14Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 5:14Don Armstrong: But I'm thinking, you know, some uh weak need old Corvette that the engine's been blown up.
- 5:20Don Armstrong: There's one in the garage.
- 5:21Don Armstrong: There's that.
- 5:22Don Armstrong: Yeah, there's that as well.
- 5:24Don Armstrong: So um I I don't know.
- 5:26Don Armstrong: I I just think that uh it'd be a lot of fun, especially if you got a car club of your own and have a car club actual job to do.
- 5:35Don Armstrong: This would be the job.
- 5:37Don Armstrong: And somebody's gonna have to give up the garage uh four or five months, and uh the guys come over on the weekend, you know, work uh eight hours on a Saturday and maybe a couple hours on Sunday, and whenever you can get to it.
- 5:49Jeff Dziekan: That's where you need to know somebody with like a pull apart or a junkyard area that you can salvage an intake or maybe get a set of shocks or a uh rear axle or something like that.
- 6:00Jeff Dziekan: Yes.
- 6:00Jeff Dziekan: That that would be the buddy up system there.
- 6:02Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:03Jeff Dziekan: It uh make your four grand go a long way.
- 6:12Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 6:13Don Armstrong: Well, we'll just let them uh there they are.
- 6:15Don Armstrong: There they are.
- 6:16Jeff Dziekan: We lost Mike, but we got them.
- 6:17Jeff Dziekan: That's that's a good trade.
- 6:18Don Armstrong: Okay, Jennifer.
- 6:19Don Armstrong: So we're gonna try this one more time.
- 6:20Don Armstrong: Third time, and you're out now if you did if this doesn't work.
- 6:25Mike Marrs: Hello.
- 6:27unknown: No, nothing.
- 6:29unknown: Great.
- 6:30Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 6:30Don Armstrong: Well, at any rate, um, we're gonna have to bypass that, uh, unfortunately.
- 6:35Don Armstrong: But I think that I gave you the the the whole idea behind this thing.
- 6:38Don Armstrong: Um I'm not exactly sure of the website because they don't so we got this on Facebook.
- 6:43Don Armstrong: Uh Facebook.com slash South Texas Performance, I think will get you uh into where you need to go if you're interested in something like that.
- 6:52Jeff Dziekan: See more on that page.
- 6:53Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:54Don Armstrong: Yeah, so um anyway, judged by the public at the hot rod riot.
- 7:00Don Armstrong: Uh the hot rod riot is going to be November 6th and 7th at Riverside Park in Victoria, Texas.
- 7:06Jeff Dziekan: I'm sure they got food and all kinds of things.
- 7:10Don Armstrong: I'll bet you who's gonna be there.
- 7:11Don Armstrong: Mr.
- 7:11Jeff Dziekan: Sparkman in his entourage.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: His entourage, yeah.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: He kind of heads up all of the hot rod stuff down there at Victoria.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: World leader of Victoria.
- 7:20Jeff Dziekan: He's Mr.
- 7:20Jeff Dziekan: Victoria.
- 7:21Jeff Dziekan: Mr.
- 7:21Jeff Dziekan: Mr.
- 7:21Jeff Dziekan: Vic, Mr.
- 7:22Jeff Dziekan: V.
- 7:23Jeff Dziekan: We'll call him Mr.
- 7:24Jeff Dziekan: V.
- 7:24Jeff Dziekan: Mr.
- 7:24Jeff Dziekan: V Sparksman.
- 7:25Jeff Dziekan: Exactly.
- 7:26Jeff Dziekan: Sparkman.
- 7:26Don Armstrong: So anyway, um, that that looks like a fun time.
- 7:29Don Armstrong: Sorry we couldn't get them on the air.
- 7:30Don Armstrong: Don't know what the problem was, but we may have seen them at one of the tours, too.
- 7:35Jeff Dziekan: They're involved in that.
- 7:36Jeff Dziekan: I'm sure that they are from Victoria.
- 7:38Don Armstrong: So you know the funny thing about Victoria is, and I've mentioned this before, it's not that far from Houston.
- 7:44Jeff Dziekan: Oh no.
- 7:44Jeff Dziekan: That's a neat little drive.
- 7:46Jeff Dziekan: The construction sucks, but that's gonna be over with in another 20 years.
- 7:50Don Armstrong: Well, I don't know which way you went, but I didn't run into too much construction.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:56Don Armstrong: Just yeah, just uh uh skipping the sections that were think that it was a half hour and twenty minutes or something.
- 8:04Don Armstrong: Yeah, something like that.
- 8:04Jeff Dziekan: Well, if you stop at Bucky's, then you're looking at an hour two hours, because you gotta stop at Bucky's.
- 8:08Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 8:09Don Armstrong: So you have to.
- 8:10Jeff Dziekan: That's you can't travel to Texas without stopping at Buckey's.
- 8:13Don Armstrong: In fact, I posted something on my personal Facebook page.
- 8:16Don Armstrong: Oh, yeah, I saw that.
- 8:17Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 8:17Don Armstrong: Um and uh if you who passes by a Bucky's nobody.
- 8:22Don Armstrong: Uh everybody stops at Bucky's, whether you need gas or not.
- 8:26Don Armstrong: Gas is just an excuse because uh that's a whole shopping spree in itself.
- 8:31Don Armstrong: Exactly.
- 8:32Don Armstrong: Um we have some I have uh my cousins that live in Wisconsin.
- 8:36Jeff Dziekan: They don't have a Bucky's up in the whole outfit from shoes to your your foundation or your delegates, and then you can buy you know a nice bucky shirt.
- 8:44Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 8:45Jeff Dziekan: Belt, bucky belt.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:47Don Armstrong: Hey, um I uh had a uh epiphany.
- 8:53Jeff Dziekan: Uh you're gonna say seizure.
- 8:55Don Armstrong: Well that goes without saying um there is a story that I really wanted to uh bring to your attention.
- 9:05Don Armstrong: And that is um a I gotta I gotta dig through here.
- 9:10Don Armstrong: Oh I think I found it.
- 9:12Jeff Dziekan: We got Mike back.
- 9:13Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, hello Mike.
- 9:15Jeff Dziekan: Michael, are we good?
- 9:17Jeff Dziekan: There he is.
- 9:18Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 9:18Don Armstrong: He and he has it has no microphone either, apparently.
- 9:22Don Armstrong: So he can't speak.
- 9:24Mike Marrs: He just uh forgot to unmute his mute.
- 9:26unknown: Okay.
- 9:27Don Armstrong: Uh one of America's most popular cars is going electric.
- 9:31Don Armstrong: No.
- 9:32Don Armstrong: Uh sparking preschoolers' imaginations from the horror of a$5 a gallon gasoline.
- 9:38Don Armstrong: Little Tykes.
- 9:40Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 9:41Don Armstrong: Remember Little Tykes?
- 9:42Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 9:42Don Armstrong: Little Tykes has introduced the cozy e-charging station, a$33 accessory that converts its timeless cozy coupe toy to run on theoretical battery power.
- 9:56Don Armstrong: Now you know what I'm talking about, that little plastic thing that you bought all the grandkids.
- 10:01Mike Marrs: I know that it was red with a yellow top on it.
- 10:04Don Armstrong: That's it's the same one.
- 10:05Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 10:06Don Armstrong: The charger has lights and sounds, and it plugs seamlessly uh into the car's existing fuel door.
- 10:13Don Armstrong: Now I did not realize that the thing had a fuel door, but maybe they've uh newer models.
- 10:18Don Armstrong: Newer models have the fuel door.
- 10:19Don Armstrong: No adapter or re-engineering required, though it does need three AAA batteries, which aren't included.
- 10:26Don Armstrong: Um according to the Little Tykes website, whether they're running errands around the playroom or cruising through the backyard, this charging station makes every trip more memorable.
- 10:38Don Armstrong: Children, ages 18 months to five years.
- 10:41Don Armstrong: In practice, of course, the plastic-bodied single-seater continues to run solely on the power of its driver's own feet, Fred Flintstone style.
- 10:49Don Armstrong: Uh Little Tykes has long offered a cozy pumper for make-believe trips to the gas station.
- 10:55Don Armstrong: Cozy Coop has been ruling toy-strewn driveways and suburban sidewalks for nearly half a century now.
- 11:02Don Armstrong: Logging sales of up to 500,000 of them a year in the 1990s.
- 11:09Don Armstrong: Its$65 suggested retail price easily makes it the cheapest EV around, though ill-suited for trips outside the neighborhood.
- 11:19Don Armstrong: I think we bought both both of our girls.
- 11:21Mike Marrs: Oh, yeah, I think everybody had one.
- 11:23Mike Marrs: All of us bought it for our kids.
- 11:25Jeff Dziekan: Little Tyques is owned by a company, AllPlay, and I actually am the account rep for AllPlay for shirts.
- 11:31Don Armstrong: Seriously.
- 11:32Don Armstrong: Yep.
- 11:32Don Armstrong: Well, you know what?
- 11:34Don Armstrong: We ought to get them to send us uh uh the toy, uh the little the little electric charging station along with the thing.
- 11:43Don Armstrong: And what we'll do, what we'll do is we'll donate it to the Toys for Tots when it comes time uh in at Christmas.
- 11:49Don Armstrong: I think they are tailpipes and talking toys for tots wrapped up.
- 11:52Jeff Dziekan: But I'll find out.
- 11:53Jeff Dziekan: But yeah, I do the shirts for him.
- 11:54Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 11:55Jeff Dziekan: We'll do John Cole.
- 11:56Jeff Dziekan: John Cole is the All right, John.
- 11:58Don Armstrong: If you're listening to the show.
- 11:59Jeff Dziekan: He does a lot of traveling.
- 12:01Jeff Dziekan: That guy's hard to get a hold of, but we'll find out.
- 12:02Jeff Dziekan: I can see it now.
- 12:03Don Armstrong: In a in a tiny tyke.
- 12:05Don Armstrong: Electric one.
- 12:06Don Armstrong: Electric one.
- 12:07Mike Marrs: Yeah, I can see it now, 20 years from now.
- 12:09Mike Marrs: All these little kids that have grown up and they're going to be going to the therapist and they're gonna be saying, What's the earliest memory you have?
- 12:14Mike Marrs: Oh, I had a little tiny tyke and I was on the driveway and hit a puddle.
- 12:19Don Armstrong: And I got electrocutor uh with those batteries that are not included in the set.
- 12:25Jeff Dziekan: That's three AAA's.
- 12:27Don Armstrong: Well, there's something for you, so there you go.
- 12:30Don Armstrong: I'm sure you can order the thing online.
- 12:32Don Armstrong: And if you've already got one and you need an electric charging station or a gas station as well, apparently battery station.
- 12:39Don Armstrong: Yeah, you you can order it and uh get one delivered to your front door within moments.
- 12:46Don Armstrong: Um, there's a big news story this week.
- 12:49Don Armstrong: I think it's big news.
- 12:50Don Armstrong: They're all big news.
- 12:51Don Armstrong: Big, big Toyota, North America, may build a two billion dollar assembly plant adjacent to its current Texas truck plant with construct construction starting as early as this year, according to documents filed with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
- 13:08Don Armstrong: Um, if the project is approved, it would become the automaker's sixth U.S.
- 13:14Don Armstrong: assembly plant when output begins in 2030.
- 13:18Don Armstrong: Wow.
- 13:18Don Armstrong: Now they haven't said what they're gonna build there, but knowing Toyota, it's not going to be a singular place, a singular output assembly plan.
- 13:29Mike Marrs: But what's in the first paragraph?
- 13:30Jeff Dziekan: First line.
- 13:31Mike Marrs: Yeah, one of the stories I read is that it was gonna be the Tacoma.
- 13:35Don Armstrong: Well, the Tacoma is currently running off the tundra plan.
- 13:39Don Armstrong: Well, the whatever line.
- 13:41Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, but it says maybe high-end tundra.
- 13:43Don Armstrong: Well, I know it says maybe because nobody's willing to show their hands.
- 13:48Don Armstrong: Commit, yeah.
- 13:48Don Armstrong: But I can tell you that this is gonna happen with confidence.
- 13:52Don Armstrong: But don't ask me why I got the confidence, but what else can turn on?
- 13:56Don Armstrong: Listen, they wouldn't they wouldn't be touting this news.
- 13:58Don Armstrong: Yeah, it's called Project Orca.
- 14:01Jeff Dziekan: Oh um submarines, they could be building submarines.
- 14:05Mike Marrs: Yeah, in San Antonio, yeah.
- 14:07Mike Marrs: Perfect.
- 14:08Jeff Dziekan: And launch them in the Riverwalk.
- 14:11Jeff Dziekan: I doubt that.
- 14:12Jeff Dziekan: And when they had that big rain, you we just had the big rain coming through there, evidently.
- 14:15Jeff Dziekan: Was it you telling me that all those restaurants got flooded on the Riverwalk or most of them?
- 14:19Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 14:20Jeff Dziekan: Amazing.
- 14:21Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 14:22Don Armstrong: Um with the big rain that went through there.
- 14:25Don Armstrong: Texas weather is weird, especially in the spring.
- 14:27Don Armstrong: We you know you never know.
- 14:29Don Armstrong: In the fall, it's usually hurricanes, but uh in the spring, it's these monstrous weather systems that roll through and stay stagnant over the area and dump feet of rain.
- 14:40Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 14:41Don Armstrong: We're familiar with that here.
- 14:42Jeff Dziekan: I want to tell you that this this season the you get a little bit of rain, you get a little bit of heat off you know every few days, which is perfect.
- 14:48Jeff Dziekan: My my yard, the flowers, the veggies, everything is awesome.
- 14:52Jeff Dziekan: So keep that cycle going.
- 14:54Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 14:56Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 14:56Jeff Dziekan: If you're out there listening.
- 14:58Don Armstrong: Um I don't know whether you saw the news, but I saw it actually this morning, uh, the story.
- 15:04Don Armstrong: And I've seen it online as well.
- 15:06Don Armstrong: Waymo recalling thousands of robo taxis to fix a software issue that could cause the autonomous vehicles to drive on flooded roads, speaking of flooding.
- 15:14Don Armstrong: The recall effects, thirty seven hundred and ninety-one vehicles equipped with the company's fifth and sixth generation automated driving system, like we would know what that is.
- 15:22Don Armstrong: That's according to documents posted on NITS's website.
- 15:25Don Armstrong: The robotaxi business is working on a final remedy to address the problem, according to the agency.
- 15:30Don Armstrong: The decision stems from an April 20th incident in San Antonio, where an occupied Waymo robotaxi encountered an untraversable.
- 15:41Don Armstrong: I didn't even know that that was a word, an untersable flooded section of a roadway, according to the documents.
- 15:47Don Armstrong: Rather than avoid the potentially dangerous street, the vehicle proceeded into the floodwater at a reduced speed.
- 15:54Don Armstrong: Waymo temporarily suspended robotaxi operations in the city after the incident.
- 15:58Don Armstrong: The company said it has resumed autonomous operations there, but has not yet restarted rides for customers.
- 16:05Don Armstrong: The story that I saw was that apparently there were many Waymo's roaming this particular one neighborhood.
- 16:13Jeff Dziekan: Calde sac.
- 16:14Jeff Dziekan: In the cul-de-sac, I think.
- 16:15Don Armstrong: They all got caught up in there.
- 16:16Jeff Dziekan: Anyway, did that say it had a passenger in it trying to not untraverse it or not traverse?
- 16:20Don Armstrong: I I didn't say.
- 16:21Don Armstrong: Although no one was injured and the recall is relatively small, the incident highlights the challenges for driverless vehicles to adapt to unpredictable weather and other unexpected roadway conditions without a human driver's judgment.
- 16:34Don Armstrong: Waymo's been rolling out its robotaxi service in cities across the U.S.
- 16:38Don Armstrong: in a growing competition with the likes of Tesla.
- 16:41Don Armstrong: NHSA has two separate investigations into Waymo self-driving vehicles.
- 16:45Don Armstrong: One is probing an incident in which a robotaxi struck a child near a school in Santa Monica, California in January, while the other was opened after the company's cars repeatedly failed to fully slow or stop for school buses last year.
- 17:00Mike Marrs: So so the taxi knew enough to slow down before trying to traverse the untraversable water.
- 17:09Don Armstrong: Apparently so.
- 17:10Mike Marrs: But it didn't know enough to stop and don't go through.
- 17:13Mike Marrs: Yeah, exactly.
- 17:13Mike Marrs: Exactly.
- 17:14Don Armstrong: So they're working on that.
- 17:16Don Armstrong: We've heard those stories before that.
- 17:18Mike Marrs: Well, but out there in San Antonio, when we lived out there, you could have a flash flood in two hours and and you'd have more flooded streets and there would be signs up, there'd be barricades up, all kinds of things.
- 17:29Mike Marrs: But if the car can't read the dang sign, then it ain't going to stop.
- 17:34Jeff Dziekan: Well, those are the Conestoga days back then.
- 17:38Don Armstrong: That's right, Mars.
- 17:39Don Armstrong: The Conestoga days.
- 17:41Don Armstrong: I think you were putting cell phones with long cords in cars back then, weren't you?
- 17:45Mike Marrs: Yeah, we that's when we developed the the the corded the circular one, the spring action so it could stretch a little bit.
- 17:52unknown: There you go.
- 17:53Don Armstrong: You were probably at the beginning of that.
- 17:55Don Armstrong: Hey, we need to get his segment in.
- 17:56Jeff Dziekan: We need to get his stuff done.
- 17:57Don Armstrong: Well, uh, you know, let's let's do it coming up, shall we?
- 18:00Don Armstrong: All right.
- 18:01Don Armstrong: Uh we're gonna have the crews in and events calendars and driving destinations with Mr.
- 18:05Don Armstrong: Mars.
- 18:05Don Armstrong: Stay with us.

- 19:55Don Armstrong: Thanks for joining us today.
- 19:56Don Armstrong: You shouldn't miss it.
- 19:58Don Armstrong: Let's do the uh driving destinations with Mr.
- 20:00Don Armstrong: Mars, shall we?
- 20:01Mike Marrs: Yes, sir.
- 20:02Mike Marrs: I think we should.
- 20:03Mike Marrs: So we're where is it?
- 20:05Mike Marrs: It's two down.
- 20:06Mike Marrs: Go ahead.
- 20:07Don Armstrong: Go ahead and go out.
- 20:08Mike Marrs: One of the things that you know, if if you want to go out hiking, if you're an outdoors person, sometimes you want to go out hiking just to get out into nature.
- 20:15Mike Marrs: A lot of people go to the Grand Canyon things, but if you can't go that far and you want to look for a place around Houston, you could go to the usual Buffalo Bayou or Memorial Park Loop that you all mentioned earlier.
- 20:26Mike Marrs: But there are other places that might be of more interest.
- 20:29Mike Marrs: For example, Terry Hershey Park.
- 20:33Mike Marrs: Now, this is when you go there, you're gonna see the main paved hike and bike trails along Buffalo Bio.
- 20:38Mike Marrs: But what you want to do is get away from that and get into the informal dirt spurs that kind of go along the waterline, especially west of Beltway 8.
- 20:47Mike Marrs: Now, the side paths kind of dip down into narrow tree tunnels.
- 20:50Mike Marrs: There's root-covered banks that you've got to be a little careful on when you're walking on them.
- 20:55Mike Marrs: There's a lot of bends that slow down to the almost swamp-like pools that you're gonna see that you won't see from the regular uh Buffalo Bile tracks and trails that you're going on.
- 21:05Mike Marrs: Now, you can also, after it rains though, you gotta watch out because parts of it's gonna feel more like East Texas than Houston.
- 21:11Mike Marrs: And in the mornings, if you go in the early mornings, you're gonna see some herons and turtles.
- 21:15Mike Marrs: You might even see some deer tracks along some of the muddy edges that actually track up.
- 21:20Mike Marrs: Again, you gotta be careful.
- 21:21Mike Marrs: Don't want to slip and fall out in the middle of nowhere.
- 21:24Mike Marrs: Now, the second place you might look at is the Edith L.
- 21:27Mike Marrs: Moore Nature Sanctuary.
- 21:29Mike Marrs: Now, this is kind of hidden in the city of West.
- 21:32Mike Marrs: It's a morrow on the west side of Houston.
- 21:34Mike Marrs: It's not real big, but it's got a lot of trees that make it feel much larger when you're walking on foot.
- 21:39Mike Marrs: It's got boardwalk sections that kind of go through the shaded creek corridors.
- 21:43Mike Marrs: You get a little bit of sunlight coming through, it kind of gives you a real remote feeling to it.
- 21:47Mike Marrs: It's very quiet.
- 21:48Mike Marrs: For Houston in particular, you don't hear the traffic.
- 21:51Mike Marrs: You can hear the birds, and you can actually hear the winds through the pine and oak trees.
- 21:54Mike Marrs: The loop is kind of short, so it's not something that's going to take you all day, but you can be a nice, take you a nice slow.
- 22:00Mike Marrs: Wander on a hike and uh go through it, particularly a light rain, you're gonna get some ground smells that actually will make you think you're in a forest someplace besides in Houston.
- 22:09Don Armstrong: Ground smells, ground smells.
- 22:12Mike Marrs: It's better than your cat smells out of your checkbox.
- 22:15Mike Marrs: Anyway, so the third place you might want to look at is the Willow Waterhole Green Space.
- 22:21Mike Marrs: Now, this is a larger place.
- 22:24Mike Marrs: It's in uh southwest Houston, and it's really got its own, it's big enough to have its own ecosystem.
- 22:30Mike Marrs: And it's go on the trails, they wind through the retention ponds.
- 22:34Mike Marrs: There's several of them.
- 22:35Mike Marrs: You got a lot of tall grasses, open water edges that reflect the sky at the sunset.
- 22:39Mike Marrs: You can get some really nice colors in there.
- 22:41Mike Marrs: But unlike most manicured parks, it's intentionally not manicured.
- 22:47Mike Marrs: It's very unfussy.
- 22:48Mike Marrs: It's got curved paths and branches without any sort of feeling.
- 22:51Mike Marrs: You're kind of more wandering through, literally.
- 22:54Mike Marrs: Got a lot of bird activity, and on windy days, the tall grasses, you can actually see it wave like you see uh like in the Midwest, out in the middle of nowhere.
- 23:03Mike Marrs: Number four would be Spring Creek Greenway.
- 23:06Mike Marrs: Now, this is Houston's uh almost wilderness corridor that you might call it.
- 23:11Mike Marrs: It's the closest thing to a continuous nature walking corridor in Houston proper.
- 23:16Mike Marrs: Now that stretches for miles along Spring Creek.
- 23:19Mike Marrs: You've got some nice sandy soil underfoot, thick hardwood forest, and you got long stretches that where you're not interrupted with any sort of buildings or anything.
- 23:27Mike Marrs: It's not like a city park, because this one has real distance.
- 23:30Mike Marrs: You can actually get a few hours deep.
- 23:31Mike Marrs: And I'm talking hours walking without looping back quickly.
- 23:35Mike Marrs: The forest changes as you move through it from this dense oaks to pine pockets.
- 23:39Mike Marrs: You also have some low wetland sections that you can find, and you get to where you want to go to a scale of nature that really feels really out there.
- 23:49Mike Marrs: You can see some great focks, and and to be honest, this thing is listed supposedly as the longest trailing uh hiking area in the nation.
- 23:58Mike Marrs: It's 40 miles actually long that you can walk out through this thing.
- 24:02Mike Marrs: So if you get lost out there, don't do it.
- 24:05Mike Marrs: Uh the fifth one that I would bring up is Buffalo Bayou, of course, lost lost banks and side cut trails.
- 24:11Mike Marrs: Now, this is an underrated loop iter walk, as they call it.
- 24:15Mike Marrs: Now, most people stick to the Buffalo Bio trails near downtown, but you get out away from that to the side banks and the feeder paths between downtown and Shepherd.
- 24:23Mike Marrs: There are some connections that drop you closer to the water.
- 24:26Mike Marrs: You get underneath the bridges.
- 24:27Mike Marrs: You can also get into some sun-shaded concrete and forest corridors where the city feels layered on top of itself.
- 24:34Mike Marrs: You know you're in the city, but you're not feeling like you're in the city.
- 24:37Mike Marrs: They got drainage channels, of course, there's a few graffiti walls.
- 24:41Mike Marrs: There's a few places you can actually go fishing and uh find some openings in the skyline that let the sunshine in to where you do again feel like you're out in nature.
- 24:50Mike Marrs: So it's more of a pure nature hike, but it's really not out of town that far.
- 24:55Mike Marrs: So that's just a few of the huge, few hidden places in Houston that I was not aware of.
- 24:59Mike Marrs: If you're a hiker, that you can go hiking.
- 25:01Mike Marrs: Uh, a couple of them are around town, you're gonna have to drive to get to them, but they're there.
- 25:06Don Armstrong: Uh very nice.
- 25:07Don Armstrong: I like that.
- 25:07Don Armstrong: Yeah, that was a very informative.
- 25:09Don Armstrong: I I didn't know about all of that.
- 25:11Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, the second one that you had when you with the had the uh the bridge with the trees around it.
- 25:16Jeff Dziekan: Do you hear any like I don't know where it's at, but I'm just imagining there's probably traffic, car traffic, maybe highway traffic around that that you could probably see.
- 25:24Mike Marrs: The second one was the Edith L.
- 25:25Mike Marrs: Moore nature thing.
- 25:27Mike Marrs: And supposedly they say, which I haven't been there, but they say that you're far enough out that you do not hear all that traffic.
- 25:32Jeff Dziekan: Okay, that's sort of my concern was.
- 25:34Don Armstrong: Okay, cool.
- 25:35Don Armstrong: Thank you very much, sir.
- 25:37Don Armstrong: Now on the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show, it's time for cruise in and events calendars.
- 25:42Jeff Dziekan: Alrighty, here we go.

- 26:00Jeff Dziekan: It's the Wasp Museum in Sweetwater.
- 26:01Don Armstrong: I got one there out there in the back patio.
- 26:03Don Armstrong: They're swarming around that thing right now.

- 26:23SPEAKER_03: Your car ain't doodly squat.
- 26:26Jeff Dziekan: It's at the cactus inn in McLean, Texas, 101 North Pine Street.

- 26:36Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, that's a cruise.
- 26:37Jeff Dziekan: That's a cruise.
- 26:38Jeff Dziekan: It's an hour and 54 minutes by airplane.
- 26:40Mike Marrs: Yeah, but 15 hours to the Amarillo.

- 28:10Jeff Dziekan: Be there, check it out.
- 28:12Don Armstrong: Oh my god.
- 28:13Don Armstrong: Well ran across this interesting story.
- 28:16Don Armstrong: Former General Motors Vice Chairman Harry Pierce had such a keen interest in astronomy that he had a seven-foot fiberglass observatory built upon uh his home in Detroit's northern suburbs, fully automated astro haven clamshell dome, and Pierce's collection of astronomy grade telescopes are among the hundreds of items up for grabs during a three-day estate sale that starts uh today.
- 28:41Don Armstrong: The sale is May 15th through the 17th.
- 28:44Don Armstrong: Wait, this is the 16th, so this is day two.
- 28:47Don Armstrong: The Pierce's 10,000 square foot home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
- 28:52Don Armstrong: The observatory is to be removed after the sale, according to Antiques on Maine, which is handling the event.
- 28:58Don Armstrong: Pierce, who retired from GM in 2001, died in October at the age of eighty-three, perhaps best remembered for exposing the NBC's dateline program, falsely rigged pickups, to warn of their fire safety risk, if you remember that story.
- 29:13Don Armstrong: His blockbuster two-hour rebuke on live TV prompted NBC to issue an extraordinary on-air apology and to pay all the costs GM had incurred in probing the false broadcast.
- 29:24Don Armstrong: It earned Pierce, then GM's general counsel, a promotion to vice chairman in 1996.
- 29:30Don Armstrong: 2025, an estate sale for another former Detroit 3 executive, Donald Peterson, who ran Ford Motor Company from 85 to 90, drew so many people that its final day was postponed because traffic overwhelmed the neighborhood.
- 29:44Jeff Dziekan: So you take a whistleblower.
