- 0:22None. A hamster with a blunt.
- 0:34Pen knife for doing. Quicker, quicker.
- 0:39Welcome back to A Hamster with a Blunt Penknife.
- 0:42The Doctor Who Commentary podcast.
- 0:44Hello. We're here at the end of season
- 0:4811. It's been a long five years.
- 0:51The Jon Pertwee is very tired. Nicholas Courtney has grown his
- 0:57hair. Mike Yates, Richard Franklin
- 1:03cast out of the main cast. Katie Manning's gone.
- 1:07Roger Delgado is sadly dead. There's just John Levine and Pat
- 1:13Gorman left in units. It must be the Planet of the
- 1:18Spiders. Hello.
- 1:23Well, don't you say that? Yeah, but you know, obviously
- 1:26everyone's gone and everyone's tired and people are having
- 1:28nervous breakdowns and and people are dying.
- 1:31But this is like a big last hurrah of every actor that's
- 1:34ever appeared in this era, isn't it?
- 1:36Very much so. So just to start us off, Joe
- 1:40obviously is here and Fraser is here as well because it's not
- 1:44just just me on this one. Hello.
- 1:46I've got, I've just got a question for you.
- 1:48Oh. That's unusual.
- 1:50What's it all about? What?
- 1:53Do you mean this story? Well, if you'd watched Part 1,
- 1:58Joe, you'd know that that's a bit of a ninja.
- 2:00Oh. Sorry.
- 2:04Oh, oh, I don't think we can take that from him, Joe.
- 2:06No, I do recall when we did Robot Sherwood, you know, you
- 2:09didn't watch that one. True.
- 2:11And look how that turned out. And did you watch it?
- 2:15Did you watch Victory of the Daleks as well?
- 2:17I did. Oh, OK.
- 2:19No, you didn't. It's like.
- 2:21No, I didn't, did I? And and as famously everyone
- 2:26knows, I had no idea about the Aztecs at all.
- 2:28So. Exactly so.
- 2:31The only person that basically researches thoroughly is Fraser.
- 2:36I watched it. And yet still somehow manages to
- 2:39be wrong with spectacular frequency.
- 2:46So here we are. We're at the end of the purple
- 2:49years and to be honest, on Hamster, I've only ever been at
- 2:54the tail end of the Purple years, so this is nothing,
- 2:59nothing new for me, But what was your first experience of Planet
- 3:04of the Spiders? Right.
- 3:09You got the VHS back in the day, so.
- 3:13Glorious gorgeous cover. Yeah, yeah, Massive Buffon as he
- 3:19on that one. No, it's.
- 3:21So yes, we're talking early 90s, early mid 90s.
- 3:25I don't think it was the first one I got by any stretch.
- 3:27I think you know things like Sea devils and demons and and
- 3:31whatnot at all had them under me belt probably had Death to the
- 3:35Daleks and Day of the Daleks and all of those so it was it was
- 3:40definitely coming to it on on VHS because when you're correct
- 3:44you that's what you aim for. Well certainly I did you know I
- 3:47aimed for I'm going to be spending me money on on
- 3:50something I want like the special one.
- 3:52So I'll get Castro Valva because that's the first Davidson one.
- 3:57I'll get Planet the Spiders because that's the last perk way
- 4:01I'll get the five doctors because that's got everybody in
- 4:03it. So it was definitely that way of
- 4:06thinking around that. You know, I never bought the VHS
- 4:14of Planet of the Spiders. Nor did I.
- 4:17Because my mate Matthew Dillon had it in his collection, so I
- 4:21was like, well, I haven't got bio, I can borrow it off him and
- 4:24I never borrowed it off him. So this is one of the very last
- 4:28classic Doctor Who stories I ever saw.
- 4:31It wasn't until the DVD came out that I saw it.
- 4:34And I think by that point, yeah, we've had all the opinions, the
- 4:39house stammers, walkers and Peter Haynings and all of that
- 4:42telling us that the tail end of the Pearl era is, you know,
- 4:45terrible. But then we'd also had the the
- 4:48backlash against that by that point where people were starting
- 4:51to question those beliefs in fanzines and things like this.
- 4:54So I was in a good state of mind to be a bit contrary about what
- 4:57the, you know, there's old fan Pinions for.
- 4:59I just loved it. I stuck it on.
- 5:01I loved it, and I love the special features and I love the
- 5:04commentary. Yeah, well, we'll go into a lot
- 5:08of why I love this one. But I've so I've always really
- 5:11loved this. But I know that's not the case
- 5:14for at least one of us. Well.
- 5:16Yes. So, Simon, you've been watching
- 5:18Doctor Who longer than we've been alive.
- 5:20How did you know? Planet of the Spiders.
- 5:22Well, first of all, I came to it from the book because it was one
- 5:26that my mum read me because. I read the book of this one.
- 5:30I did actually read the book of this, and there's only one book
- 5:33that I didn't. I'm going to live this down.
- 5:36No, I know. Never ever.
- 5:39No. So this was, yeah, this was an
- 5:41early on book because I was certainly at Infant School when
- 5:45we read this one. So this was The Doctor's
- 5:47Adventures on Metabolism Free because my mum mispronounced it
- 5:53as well as Matt Smith. So so this was one that I knew
- 5:59sort of quite early on and I loved the book.
- 6:01So I thought the book was was wonderful.
- 6:03I Remember Remember that. And then I saw it in 1990 as
- 6:08part of my great big copied from Betamax video hall that I have
- 6:13mentioned several times on this podcast.
- 6:15Is this where you were meeting a guy in a back alley during the
- 6:18pool? Basically, yeah.
- 6:20Great back we have. A great big bag of Doctor Who.
- 6:23What What, you want demons? Yeah.
- 6:25Got that. Got that.
- 6:28But, and I think because the quality of the picture was so
- 6:35poor that I've, I mistook that for the quality of the story
- 6:40being quite poor and a Pertwee 6 parter in sort of 7th, 6th or
- 6:467th generation VHS copy is a hard slog.
- 6:50And this was a hard slog and I wanted to love it and I just
- 6:53thought it's a bit tatty, it's very slow.
- 6:55This is sort of on the back of season 26, which had been
- 6:59fast-paced and bright and shiny and and brilliant and I wasn't
- 7:05wasn't enamoured. And then I changed my mind.
- 7:09And then I watched it a few years later when I've got a good
- 7:12copy. And do you know what?
- 7:15I fell right in love with it because I think you can see that
- 7:21this is the end of an era and this is for the first time in
- 7:28Doctor Who, they are rounding. They're giving a Doctor his big
- 7:34hurrah and this becomes the standard for each Doctor going
- 7:39after this that you're going to round the era off with something
- 7:43really big, a really cracking adventure.
- 7:46Particularly I think it's the it's the sort of standard that
- 7:50the new series has gone for, where it's a big era ending
- 7:54story. Lots of elements from the era
- 7:57are coming back. There's lots of call backs to
- 8:00things that have happened before, which has never, ever,
- 8:02ever, ever happened in Doctor Who before.
- 8:05No other previous Doctor Who companion has written a letter
- 8:09back to the Doctor to say, oh look, remember that story we did
- 8:13last year? Well, with this crystal, look,
- 8:16I'm sending it back to you and that.
- 8:18I mean that's just, that's soap opera basically.
- 8:22And and suddenly this is Doctor Who almost as soap opera.
- 8:27And it is wonderful. I didn't realise how much of
- 8:31this era, and it looked like, was ticked off in this story.
- 8:35Obviously you've got Mike Yates from Invasion of the Dinosaurs
- 8:38being redeemed. You've got the fellow up the
- 8:42mountain being unveiled, don't you?
- 8:44From the monster. That story that's in there.
- 8:47Like you said, Joe Grant coming back you.
- 8:49Crystal Metabolis free. Metabolism and even like, I
- 8:54like, I love as well how the sort of the conclusion that's
- 8:58drawn about Sean Perkley's doctor in the last story is that
- 9:02he's a bit of a prick. You know, he's got a lot of
- 9:04hubris, so that we've known for the last five seasons.
- 9:07Which, to be fair, he is. But this is this is the very
- 9:13softest his doctor has ever been.
- 9:16Hang on, My PC has decided it was.
- 9:20Going to run out of power? Oh, keep talking, we're.
- 9:26OK, we're OK. OK, quick Jewel, do some like
- 9:30exotic belly dancing. Really want to say that?
- 9:37Definitely. He didn't shout Eureka, he
- 9:39shouted. I'm a strange.
- 9:41Maker. Wonderful moves.
- 9:45I shall have to adopt those for the men.
- 9:49So yeah, I think this is just, I'm a big era ending story and
- 9:56it is self indulgent, but I think it's justified.
- 10:02Right. Agree and disagree with you
- 10:05there, Simon. Of course.
- 10:07I think you're absolutely right that this is, you know, a big
- 10:12last hurrah for Pertway. This is, you know, everything
- 10:16about his era in one six part episode.
- 10:21I don't think any other Doctor gets that until probably Day of
- 10:25a Tenant. I think me jomie knew when we
- 10:30did Time of the Doctor. Oh yes, I mentioned this.
- 10:36Yeah, or I might have been with Dave.
- 10:38Anyone. I did end the time on his Kettle
- 10:41and string podcast. But there's two types of
- 10:43regeneration stories. There's the ones where you know
- 10:47the Doctor is in peril and the Doctor gets out of peril.
- 10:50And that happens weekend. Weekend.
- 10:52We can't week out until the point you don't want the Doctor
- 10:54to get out of peril anymore. In which cases?
- 10:56Now it's a regeneration story. And there's the ones which
- 11:00really build up towards the regeneration.
- 11:04So things like, you know, time of the Doctor is building
- 11:06towards this big regeneration. The power of the Doctor is
- 11:09building towards the regeneration.
- 11:11Something like obviously the 10th planet isn't, it's just Oh
- 11:15yeah, but he can't do another week.
- 11:17Let's get part in something like, you know, things like
- 11:21Lagopoulos and Kezwan does only have a subtle build up towards
- 11:26the regeneration, but it's not kind of like, you know, this is
- 11:29it. This is going to be the big
- 11:30blowout this is going to be. No, I mean with Lagopoulos, it's
- 11:33the impending sense of doom that the regeneration is coming.
- 11:37It is with them, with Andrew Zarney.
- 11:40It's more just, you know the Doctor has been set up in in
- 11:44episode one with this fatal disease that is, you know
- 11:46ultimately going to kill him and just can't get to the point
- 11:50where we again an. Impending doom?
- 11:54Yeah, this one like you see is very much.
- 11:58Again, it's it's, it's nothing that's like building towards
- 12:02this is going to be the end of Pertwee other than we are
- 12:05getting Pertwee's greatest hits, we are getting everything that
- 12:09you would expect from the John Pertwee story, but we're kind of
- 12:12dialing it up to 11 really so well.
- 12:18I was going to say I want to make a comparison to Todd with
- 12:21the Doctor actually, because that's a really interesting one
- 12:23to choose to compare this to. Because I don't think the John
- 12:27Poe era is like, the whole era is structured in a way the way
- 12:31you would expect an ending that sort of culminated in all of
- 12:36this stuff coming back. It's been a lot of stand alone
- 12:38stories with just a few sort of gentle things going through it.
- 12:41Whereas Matt Smith's era was like like densely arc based
- 12:47where you would expect you know, a big culmination at the end.
- 12:51And the weird thing is, I'll find this incredibly satisfying
- 12:54because it surprises you how many elements they bring in here
- 12:58to sort of tie the era up. And in comparison in time with
- 13:02the Doctor, you and I talked about this.
- 13:04There's that sequence where they all just sit around the table
- 13:08for 5 minutes and just talk about the entire era and go,
- 13:11well, that was all about that in Series 6, and that was all about
- 13:13that in Series 5. And it's just deeply
- 13:16unsatisfying because it's part of a sort of a larger story.
- 13:19I think it really surprises how much how much.
- 13:22Without Planet of the Spiders, a lot of this wouldn't feel like a
- 13:25coherent whole, but because they bring in all the elements here,
- 13:30it does it. It ties it all up, like in a
- 13:32really neat bow. It's surprising.
- 13:35Again, I I don't feel that it was necessarily, I don't think
- 13:39it's that type of story. It's not sort of like, you know,
- 13:42oh, we need to find out what happened with Joel Grant or we
- 13:44need. Redeem, It's almost it unfolds
- 13:48by coincidence. Yeah, the the.
- 13:51I think where it shines is in just having those those moments.
- 13:57We're not going to discuss them if we ever get around to talking
- 14:00about the episode or playing. But you know, it's just got
- 14:04those, those elements, those things that you look for, you
- 14:07know, you think perk where you are, you think action by havoc,
- 14:10you think UNIT family, you think you know chases, you think you
- 14:15know Doctor. It's got all of these elements
- 14:19in it. It's not necessarily, you know,
- 14:23like I say, setting out to do something along the lines of or
- 14:26this must be wrapped up. What it is trying to do is say
- 14:29here is what we do and this is also doing it and cutting free
- 14:34and cutting loose and just saying we're going to do as much
- 14:35as it is we want as we'll see in Episode 2 and just going for it.
- 14:41Ultimately, I think, Joe, you said when I last talked about
- 14:46this at the ends of Seeds of Doom that I'd said it was
- 14:50flawed. And it is.
- 14:52It's massively flawed. And you know, you can't
- 14:55objectively tell me that they are not better written episodes
- 14:59of Doctor Who. Better.
- 15:01There are better written John Powie serials, yeah, and I've
- 15:03done Ambassadors of Death already.
- 15:05Better written, better performed stories.
- 15:08There's better directed stories. There's better realized stories,
- 15:13but this is just so much fun because of what it's doing, you
- 15:20know? All of that just is.
- 15:23Doesn't matter, because what we are doing is we're coming
- 15:25together for six weeks to absolutely celebrate Jon Purpee
- 15:31and his time struck who? And he's done 5 great years.
- 15:35He has reinvigorated the show and he deserves.
- 15:41Yeah, at all of this. Yeah.
- 15:44And you know when I was was a miserable teenager and a in my
- 15:48early 20s when I didn't like Jon Pertwee because that was the
- 15:52prevailing thing in fandom, that was one of the reasons swayed by
- 15:59by people who were wrong, you know, that was that I think that
- 16:05was a sort of wow, it's self indulgent.
- 16:07Oh, it's just nonsense. He doesn't.
- 16:09Yeah. Why does he get this?
- 16:11But watching him, particularly in that particular sequence in
- 16:17Part 5, which I think is the finest bit of acting Jon Pertwee
- 16:24ever does in the show, I am yeah, he is still giving this
- 16:31show everything right at the end, but.
- 16:34You so, Fraser, this is really fun, and I think it is.
- 16:36I also think this is one of the most thoughtful Doctor Who
- 16:39story. It's just got barrier, let's
- 16:40stamped all over it. Oh, yes.
- 16:43Well, yeah. Well, he's producing, directing,
- 16:45writing. He's the author here, isn't he?
- 16:49But like, you know, that's as. Much deserved, as John Perk.
- 16:52Exactly. You know, we can't just say this
- 16:54is the John Pertwee era that's going out, this is the Terence
- 16:57Dixon Barry. Let's the era that's going out.
- 16:59So we are not just celebrating the actor John Pertwee, we are
- 17:03celebrating the Pertwee era, which means we have to have the
- 17:08best of 10 sticks. We have to have the best of
- 17:11Barry Letts as well, which we get in this, you know we get.
- 17:15Like you said, it's not. Yeah, it's not perfect, but what
- 17:18it is, it's it's all those things you want from A10 Sticks
- 17:22story. It's all the things you want
- 17:23from a Barry Let's Story era or just on acid.
- 17:29But in like the redemption of Mike Yates in sort of Tommy's
- 17:34story throughout this, in the Doctor facing his fears, in that
- 17:38it's just incredibly moving final scene with John Bertway, I
- 17:42think you hit moments of sort of real drama in Doctor Who, which
- 17:47we hadn't really had before. What you hit is moments of
- 17:51charm. Oh, yes.
- 17:55Thank you for listening to a hamster with a blood pen knife.
- 17:58Goodnight, everybody. Well, should we watch episode
- 18:02one? You know what?
- 18:05Yeah. Who's going to?
- 18:11Cut us in, I will call on then in 543321 No.
- 18:19Oh hell, the Great One. Oh oh good.
- 18:22I love this sequence. With his bouffant and we're
- 18:26about to zoom. Well, I think you'll find this
- 18:28is quite late in the purple years because because his hair's
- 18:31been teased up and it's quite a big booth on now, isn't it?
- 18:35It's just getting out of the way now is.
- 18:38Jon Perry's Nico, the only one large enough to plug a hole in
- 18:41the Time vortex. Yep, he's the only Doctor Who
- 18:45could fly through the time Vortex.
- 18:47I know he did. Gentlemen, I have one thing and
- 18:50one thing to say at your zoning at this point.
- 18:52What's that? Who's Cows?
- 18:59There are cows in Doctor, and there aren't many, you know.
- 19:02No image of the Fender has cows. I love this idea of the Doctor
- 19:07and the Brig going out for a night out.
- 19:10Oh, yes. You know and you think.
- 19:12This has changed from ambassadors of death.
- 19:14Race. Yeah.
- 19:14What exactly then? Well, this is a long way from
- 19:17Season 7. No, it's not really season
- 19:20seven. You could imagine them going out
- 19:22for a beer together. Season eight, Season 8, and
- 19:26that's not going to happen. Season eight.
- 19:28No. See, you know season 10 and
- 19:31maybes. I think it's a nice sort of, you
- 19:34know, umbrella. The fact that, you know, they
- 19:36started out really quite. We described it as Holmes and
- 19:40Watson didn't work and then it kind of goes more sort of like
- 19:43Terry and June after that and then it's coming back now to
- 19:48something a bit more, you know, friendly and familiar.
- 19:51It's. Just so funny, the way the
- 19:53Doctor's so unimpressed by the belly dance and the brigade is
- 19:56sits up to attention like, oh, that's correct and she's just
- 20:00the two next to them because one looks like Ross Corbett and the
- 20:03other one looks like Cassandra from Falls And all that's true
- 20:08isn't this. I think this is a spectacular
- 20:11first episode. Yeah, it's decent.
- 20:14No, I think it's great. I think it's really grounded and
- 20:17it's really spooky and it's full of mysteries and suspense.
- 20:21It's got a great cliffhanger and that's me done.
- 20:24See you later guys. She was off to watch the belly
- 20:28dance, everyone. I think this this whole thing I
- 20:33was watching on the special features of Mark Gatiss was
- 20:35talking about these sequences in the the not monastery.
- 20:39What is it? It's Lamas tree, isn't it?
- 20:42Yeah. And that you know this.
- 20:43Retreat. These adults dress very
- 20:46normally. It's like adults that he knew,
- 20:47behaving in this sort of sinister way, chanting away in
- 20:51sort of dark Cellars. There's an atmosphere to it.
- 20:55Yeah, definitely. There's a there's a sinisterness
- 20:58to to this that you can't quite pin down sort of straight away.
- 21:04And I think it's a lovely, lovely use of Mike, Yeah, Who,
- 21:10who we haven't seen for a few stories, who we don't expect to
- 21:13see again. And the fact that he sort of
- 21:17stumbled on this mystery is, is really good.
- 21:21Well, you said earlier you said the word it's almost like
- 21:23coincidental, but these elements are in here.
- 21:26But actually all of those elements inform the story might
- 21:29goes to the monastery because of what happened in Invasion of the
- 21:32Dinosaurs which brings in Sarah Jane.
- 21:34Joe sends the crystal which came from the Green death, which of
- 21:38course is to chase in episode 2, and then sends them to
- 21:40Mesabilius 3. All those elements inform the
- 21:43plot. Metabolism.
- 21:45Sorry, I believe Professor Clegg.
- 21:49Oh no, it's not Professor Clegg. Next, is it?
- 21:50It's that dreadful. No, it is.
- 21:53No, it is Professor Clegg now. Oh.
- 21:56I haven't got the Subs on. I'll turn them on now.
- 22:00Here we go. There is a very relaxed
- 22:03chemistry between Nick Courtney and John Purry now though, isn't
- 22:05there? Yeah.
- 22:06Yeah, I think it's it's sort of rather lovely.
- 22:11I think that after all these years of the Doctor railing
- 22:14again against being stuck on Earth and then being given his
- 22:19freedom, that as soon as he's given his freedom he comes back
- 22:23back home to UNIT and the lab. And here is Cyril Shap's
- 22:29greatest. I've got a question for you
- 22:31then. Who has come in his in his
- 22:35perfect PERT we cosplay. Bow tie.
- 22:39Cloak. Bow tie.
- 22:40Yep. I've got some questions for you
- 22:42guys. Go on.
- 22:43Then Sir Simon, who's the supporting actor that won't cop
- 22:48out when there's danger all about chaps?
- 22:54Oh, this is like our greatest hits then.
- 22:57Who is the man that would risk his neck for?
- 23:00His brother? Man, you're damn right.
- 23:06Oh, he's a complicated man. No one understands in but his
- 23:10woman. Several shaps.
- 23:15He's wonderful. Just wonderful.
- 23:17He is so brilliant and obviously back from Ambassadors of Death.
- 23:22It's a. Shame isn't it, that he does
- 23:24chip out in episode one because he is really good.
- 23:26I'm not sure what he'd do for the rest of the story.
- 23:28No so good in Ambassadors of Death.
- 23:31He he just makes this poor Professor Clegg, who's just
- 23:36makes him so tragic. There's a brilliant line here,
- 23:40you know, from Pertway man, He can deliver a line, can't he?
- 23:43Where he goes. I promise I will not tell them
- 23:46that. You are in fact a very powerful
- 23:47clairvoyant. And I was like, oh, that's a
- 23:51great love. And he's not doing it in an arcy
- 23:55way, which he would have done in Series 8 or season nine.
- 23:59He's, but he's really concerned and he's really, he's just
- 24:03lovable here. There's a lot more charm about
- 24:06them in the store, yes, than we're used to.
- 24:11I think it sort of starts Carnival of Monsters onwards, so
- 24:15I think he's quite charming from that point on.
- 24:20I think, I say I think he's really charming in CV7.
- 24:22I think he just you know this year I'm in a different
- 24:25direction in in 8-9 and ten and you know like again it's nice
- 24:30that he has come back now to be in you know a lot more affable.
- 24:37So Sam, you're you're a big fan of several shops, aren't you?
- 24:40What? What do you think is shops is
- 24:41best? Oh, it's really difficult
- 24:46because all four of his characters are are quite
- 24:49distinct, but also quite nervous.
- 24:51But I do absolutely love the Archimandrite.
- 24:54Joe has just demonstrated the Archimandrite's hat.
- 24:56Oh, is that what? He's doing here, so I go.
- 24:59Dear, dear, dear, I thought. It was angling first.
- 25:02Stop it. But I do notice.
- 25:05I think he is absolutely lovable in this story.
- 25:08He's just so. Now look, you see this with the
- 25:12CSO with the tray? Yeah, this is.
- 25:15This is what they should be doing with CSO.
- 25:16Just about that amount. That's enough.
- 25:20We're going to see a lot more before the end of the story.
- 25:23Did you guys notice the gubbins in the doctor's laboratory?
- 25:26Because on the back shelf there's an enormous, like,
- 25:29Raptor dinosaur. I don't know what that's doing
- 25:32there. Have a look on the shelves in
- 25:34the middle. All right.
- 25:35OK, back in that direction. Look, look, we just comfort in
- 25:42shops. He's so gentle with her, isn't
- 25:45he? He is, yeah.
- 25:47And then shops is perfect with this one because he does play
- 25:49that put upon person so very well, doesn't he?
- 25:54Everyone of his characters is is kind of, you know, under stress,
- 25:58under a bit of strain and, you know, really kind of nervous
- 26:01about it. So he is perfect for this.
- 26:03I can't imagine he played that sort of, you know, the die in
- 26:06charge, the the hero, you know, charge.
- 26:10Seems very unlikely. Would would sell shops have made
- 26:14a good fusion, do you think? Yeah.
- 26:17Possibly, yeah, I think so, yeah.
- 26:19But maybe not quite as good as Terry Scully.
- 26:22Yeah, I think I would agree with that for once.
- 26:24Despite. That there's a lot of brown in
- 26:27these sets. I do think I love these sort of
- 26:29down to earth sets that they do it.
- 26:32Feels very real. It feels very mid 70s.
- 26:35I think Barriers is absolutely going for as down to earth as he
- 26:38possibly can. Before taking us off to
- 26:41Metabolis 3, I mean look at this at a train station.
- 26:47Damn, it's very portal homes, isn't it?
- 26:49When you think about it, that's exactly the sort of sets we'll
- 26:54get, like Zygons and Mars. Did homes have something to do
- 27:00with this? So was he scripted?
- 27:01Sing this. Well, he was sort of scripted
- 27:02sing around. So I everything is sort of all a
- 27:06bit bit of a muddle at this point because at the same time
- 27:10as doing this, they're also making Robot at the same time.
- 27:14So Terence has been off and he's rewritten most of Monster
- 27:18Peloton and has been writing Robot and in the middle you've
- 27:23got he says. So I was so grateful that it was
- 27:27Barry and and Bob Sloman writing this story, because I didn't.
- 27:30I knew I wouldn't have to do a lot of work on this.
- 27:33And so then Bob Holmes is around as well, sort of trailing
- 27:36everyone and sort of working his way into the role as well.
- 27:43So we said we said this can be a bit self indulgent in this
- 27:45story. I do think it would make like a
- 27:47peerless 4 parter. Have you watched the the omnibus
- 27:51edition that's on the DVD? Because that's that takes it
- 27:55down to that length and it works really well.
- 27:59Doesn't my gates just seem like a human being when you get him
- 28:02out of that uniform and put him behind with a car?
- 28:05I never really believed he was Jates.
- 28:07I never really believed him as a character.
- 28:09He was so stiff. Oh, he was the perfect officer.
- 28:14He was, you know, useless and dependent on his men.
- 28:20But it was also a bit, it was, it was sort of like, you know,
- 28:22he's supposed to be a military man, but he was sort of
- 28:24thoughtful, wasn't he? And and and smart and not.
- 28:29Not. No, no, I think that's an.
- 28:34Invasion of the dinosaurs? Really.
- 28:36Benton is the smart and thoughtful 1.
- 28:39Oh, OK, well, we don't get much of Benton in this, you know.
- 28:42Would. Don't.
- 28:43No. And again, I think that's part
- 28:45of the double banking because they're doing robot at the same
- 28:48time. Benton and the Brig are big
- 28:50parts of that story. So they can only do a small
- 28:55proportion of this one. So what?
- 28:57They've been so the Brig. Same time.
- 28:59Sorry, Yeah, yeah, same. Time, yeah.
- 29:02Yeah, so yeah, so Liz Sladen says she goes from one of the
- 29:07studio sessions of Planet of the Spiders.
- 29:10I think it was the first studio session and then is hauled up to
- 29:15to Worcestershire to do the location recording for Robot.
- 29:19So she is doing two stories at the same time.
- 29:22And she's a pro. Well, I've got to talk about Liz
- 29:26Slayden and John. Oh, absolutely.
- 29:28Which I think is such an underrated pairing.
- 29:31Uh, huh. How everyone disagrees with me.
- 29:34OK. That's that conversation, Dan.
- 29:37I think it is, but it's it's underrated for a reason, which
- 29:40is because obviously you know, Pertwee and Caroline John are
- 29:45exceptional together and Pertwee and Katie Manning are a
- 29:50phenomenon together. So it is, you know
- 29:53understandable that it'll be you know under appreciated,
- 29:57especially when you then think Tom Baker and Liz Slade and also
- 30:01magic together. And you know it's it's kind of
- 30:05like you know what's what's the second highest mountain in the
- 30:08world. No one knows the name at the top
- 30:10of their head To the you know you know Everest is the highest.
- 30:13It doesn't mean that this mountain's any less high.
- 30:15It's just. But what's interesting is, I
- 30:17think, actually you. Yeah, some of Pertwee's most
- 30:20intimate moments. With his companion we have
- 30:22Elizabeth Slayden. There's that great bit in Death
- 30:24to the Daleks. Oh.
- 30:25Yeah, where he cups. Her legs and then his death
- 30:28scene in this as well, and the sequence in the monster peloton
- 30:32where she thinks he's dead. Oh, everyone.
- 30:35Always thinks he's dead. Oh, no, I don't know.
- 30:37But they're they're great moments, you know, and they have
- 30:40to sort of generate. Talk about that in part 4.
- 30:43Pretty quickly, you know they only have five stories together.
- 30:48So here we've got the revelation about a mysterious woman called
- 30:51Doris. We've all had liaisons down a
- 30:55hotel in Brighton, you know. Nick Courtney's face where he's
- 31:02he's just remembering and it's just it's really great this.
- 31:07Is where he goes. Yes.
- 31:08Yes. Oh, perfectly true.
- 31:09Yes. OK, yeah, change the subject.
- 31:14Is he about to do Professor Clegg's hair?
- 31:17Oh, look at that as a contraption.
- 31:19That's what Benton says, isn't it?
- 31:21Doing a bit of hairdressing on the side.
- 31:22Dr. Yeah, no, that dinosaur, did you see it hanging down from the
- 31:29ceiling? Oh yes.
- 31:30It's very odd. Perhaps it's one of the puppets
- 31:33from Invasion of the Dinosaurs. Oh, look.
- 31:36And then we get all the monsters, don't we?
- 31:38Yeah, we get a nice little flashback.
- 31:40What monsters does that? Carnival of monsters.
- 31:42Hiya. Thrashakes.
- 31:44Trash. Eggs, yes, yeah.
- 31:47I know I was winding you up the other day.
- 31:51It's great because it Carnival of Monsters, isn't it?
- 31:54Because again, you don't get flashbacks in Doctor Who,
- 32:00certainly not to previous stories.
- 32:02In the 80s you do. Yes, but you.
- 32:04Do with. You do a bit in Purpley as well
- 32:06though, don't you? Because you have like the mind
- 32:07of evil where he gets all the. All the.
- 32:10He gets the photographs, doesn't he?
- 32:11Yeah. Then you have the Daleks, where
- 32:15he goes into the Dalek. Oh, yeah.
- 32:18All right. Yeah.
- 32:18OK And then. And then in Carnival of
- 32:20Monsters, he sees a cyber man. And then.
- 32:22Yeah, OK All right. I'm wrong.
- 32:25What stories have got the names of the story?
- 32:29Hardly. Any.
- 32:30Hardly any. But nobody says in this My God,
- 32:33it's a planet of spiders. Only that said, we must now go
- 32:39to the Planet of the Spiders then would have at least three.
- 32:45What do you think of Kevin Lindsay?
- 32:48Well, I don't think you'd do it now.
- 32:50No. You know, and I, but I don't
- 32:53think it's like it's as troubling as some
- 32:57interpretations of the Orient in Doctor Who.
- 33:03No, I certainly not. A phrase is very quiet over
- 33:08there. We'll talk about that yet.
- 33:12OK, oh, here's Benton. Here he comes, Benton said.
- 33:18He's well not had his haircut either, has he?
- 33:21No, no one's had their haircut. Do you know I I those are?
- 33:25Definitely not military style hairs.
- 33:27No, I'm definitely not. There is something to be said
- 33:29about not meeting your heroes, you know, because I really love
- 33:32Benson as a character. But every time I see him in
- 33:34Doctor Who, now I just think of that madman, John Levine.
- 33:39You could well for Joe. Doctors delighted to hear from
- 33:45Joe. It's lovely.
- 33:47Time. Were you a bit confusing when
- 33:48this didn't open up with a sequence in the Amazon?
- 33:50Yeah. Oh yes.
- 33:51Because that that sequence at the start of the Planet of the
- 33:54Spiders book is so well written and so absolutely feels like it
- 33:59belongs there with Joe and Cliff in the Amazon, with the, with
- 34:03the straight, with the natives and everything else.
- 34:07Yeah, it was really good. And that's Terence being
- 34:09brilliant. And just imagine if they'd
- 34:12brought Katie Manning back for a little cameo at the start.
- 34:15Trouble is, they'd have to film it in some British wood.
- 34:17It wouldn't look anything. Yeah, it wouldn't have been any
- 34:19good, no. But it is.
- 34:24That's two references there. So green, deaf, isn't it?
- 34:26There's helpless. Yeah, thanks.
- 34:28I can't say metabolius anymore, that's how.
- 34:30We pronounce it and they're obviously Clegg's got the boss.
- 34:35Oh yes, yes. And we've got the voice of Boss
- 34:38in the story, too. We need to talk about that.
- 34:41We will talk about him because there's a phenomenal scene that
- 34:43we need to talk about there, so. I know it's it's due to tragic
- 34:48circumstances that it wasn't a master story, yeah.
- 34:51But I think we got something very, very good.
- 34:54So interesting. Yeah, I think actually, I think
- 34:58Elizabeth Sladen and Richard Franklin have got a good bit of
- 35:00chemistry again on us. Yeah, which, yeah, it was
- 35:02unusual because they didn't share a lot of scenes in in
- 35:06Invasion of the Dinosaurs. But there is that one at the
- 35:09start where he's talking, where she says, oh, Nightingale's in
- 35:12Barkley Square and he says, oh, it could happen.
- 35:15And there's there's that little. She says.
- 35:17Doesn't she? Don't know.
- 35:18I like London how it is. Thank you.
- 35:20But there is a little little bit of spark between them.
- 35:25That's funny, now you know you've brought that up because
- 35:27obviously Sarah Jane's introduced in The Time Warrior.
- 35:33Yeah. Not as a unit, as a like,
- 35:37pretend to be around or whatever.
- 35:39Who's off has an adventure with the Doctor and directly from
- 35:42that adventure goes into Invasion of the Dinosaurs and
- 35:45then at which point you know she's swept up in the adventure
- 35:49there and Mike Yates turns out to be Orang and and off he goes.
- 35:52So when does this relationship between Mike Yates and Sarah
- 35:56Jane Smith? And lots of those off screen
- 35:58adventures that we never saw, Well, you know, they're in a
- 36:01paradise of death it. Is entirely possible because of
- 36:07sort of the start of this story that they have been in contact
- 36:12because it does feel like he's he's able to phone her up and
- 36:16and ask her to come down here. So maybe she has checked up on
- 36:19him and maybe she has has done that in the background.
- 36:22It is entirely possible because we know she goes home at the end
- 36:26of the day if she's on Earth, you know, so it could happen.
- 36:32Because otherwise you would just be like, pick up the phone.
- 36:34Oh, Mike who? Oh that golden age.
- 36:38Yeah. Oh God, no.
- 36:40Maybe she's been checking to make sure he's OK, because
- 36:43that's entirely in character for Sarah Jane Smith to do well.
- 36:47No, he's probably gone. I've got a great story for you.
- 36:49She's like, right? Well, that was what That's how
- 36:51he he called her, wasn't it so? But they do bring in my yes,
- 36:55don't they? To originally to be Joe Grant's.
- 36:58You know, a bit of fluff that was the idea, wasn't it, that
- 37:01they were going to have a bit of.
- 37:02And there's a talk about a date in Curse of Peloton and I know
- 37:05it never happened, but actually I could believe it with this
- 37:09pair. I can't believe it with Joe
- 37:10because. They've got a nice little
- 37:12biplame with each other. Well, she says in Is it Invasion
- 37:16Dolls where she goes? I'm going to talk to that nice
- 37:18Captain Yates dirty flirt, honestly.
- 37:23Look what's it all about? But you know Sarah in a way that
- 37:29Joe Grant never did. And I'd say even Liz Slayden
- 37:32never did. Three of the five stories this
- 37:34year, she's driving the plots. Time Warrior.
- 37:38She's investigating the Doctor, that invasion of dinosaurs.
- 37:40She's looking for those underground, that bunker, isn't
- 37:42she? And in this.
- 37:43And here. Yeah, And this drops immediately
- 37:48when Hinchcliffe comes in. Yeah.
- 37:51And it's a shame. It's a shame.
- 37:53It is because she she's independent.
- 37:56She hasn't had a scene with Jon Pertwee in this story till the
- 37:59middle of Till the middle of Part 2.
- 38:02Yeah, but this is the Sarah Jane of School reunion, and this is
- 38:06the Sarah Jane Sarah Jane Adventures.
- 38:08So the Aberration really is the Tom Baker.
- 38:11Three years of Hinch. Jane, which everybody
- 38:15celebrates, but she, you know, there's something does shift
- 38:18there, doesn't it? Oh, she's brilliant and their
- 38:20chemistry is brilliant, but she's a bit of a victim then
- 38:23from then on. It's just the only female
- 38:26character in half the stories, though.
- 38:28It's very true, yeah, but not in this.
- 38:30So we've got Jenny Laird in this.
- 38:34Yes, yes, we have. Fraser, my husband.
- 38:37Why? Why?
- 38:41Oh, don't do it, Claire. Don't do it.
- 38:43Oh. So, Doctor, have you're on a way
- 38:46on a cheap day trip to Mars. It even sounds like Joe, doesn't
- 38:51it? Oh dude.
- 38:56Well, if you're in Geneva, how about it, Mike?
- 38:59Oh, my lovely Sergeant Benson. I am pleased they didn't bring
- 39:03Joe and the Doctor back together again because it makes those
- 39:06scenes in with Matt Smith, Death of the Doctor so poignant.
- 39:14Oh, Tommy, we haven't even touched we.
- 39:15Haven't even touched. Well, there's a lot.
- 39:17There's a lot to unpick here, isn't it?
- 39:21Yeah, because some of it's a bit troubling, I think, and some of
- 39:23it's very touching. Would you but?
- 39:27I think the character like Tommy now.
- 39:31No, and I don't think you could get away with curing someone
- 39:37with a magical crystal from a space planet.
- 39:39That's very ablest. Yes, I think that's the issue
- 39:43with this story with regards to Tommy.
- 39:46I mean obviously he's he's got a new divergent of some
- 39:49description which we don't really know because that's not
- 39:55you know on the it's it's it's not understood enough in the in
- 39:58the 70s. First, no like.
- 40:01You know, as we would now would be able to say this is if if we
- 40:04did Tommy nowadays, you'd be able to say this is what, yeah,
- 40:07you know, Tommy's got what Tommy is.
- 40:11But yeah, it's it's the whole, yeah, just looking at this blue
- 40:13light, Tommy, and you'll be fine.
- 40:16What I do like about it is performers.
- 40:18I think he gets a very gentle winning performance, yes, which
- 40:22does sort of smooth over the more awkward side of.
- 40:26It. And I do like the fact that when
- 40:28he does become clever, he also is sort of aware of it and says,
- 40:37oh, I when someone says, oh Tommy, you're normal.
- 40:41And he says, I sincerely hope not.
- 40:43That's a. Good line.
- 40:45Which is is, is It's not it's not great, but it is better than
- 40:51than saying, Oh yeah, I'm I'm cured, I'm better.
- 40:55That's the sort of line you know, you feel the lot of fans
- 40:57write an essay is about. Oh, absolutely.
- 41:00Oh God, what's going on? Oh, Cyril.
- 41:04Oh God, the crystal is going crazy.
- 41:06The doctor's equipment is flying about the plane.
- 41:08Oh, where's that CSO is going mad?
- 41:11Where the hell is that wind coming from?
- 41:16These ambassadors of death G force Machine.
- 41:19He's possibly on the floor. Yeah.
- 41:20He's the return of the giant Hoover.
- 41:24Actually, you could laugh at that.
- 41:25I think that's very clever, the way they've tilted the camera
- 41:28and they're going up as if they're trying to climb up a
- 41:30building, You know, it's clever. Again, Barry Lex's direction
- 41:37isn't showy, but it is good. Yeah, well, I do.
- 41:41You know what I like about Barry Lex's direction is he really
- 41:44puts the actors front and centre and he gives them a chance to
- 41:47properly show the. Costs very, very well.
- 41:51But he gives them closer. That's scene in, I think it's
- 41:54episode 3 where Lupton's talking about his past.
- 41:57Yeah. Up to the camera, you know, And
- 42:00and angry and aggressive and a bit uncomfortable.
- 42:02Oh my. Gosh.
- 42:04Oh my God. It's.
- 42:06A. Spider.
- 42:08And it's a giant one. Can I ask you fellas, do you
- 42:11guys have an issue with spiders? No.
- 42:13Oh, yes. Oh, OK, I love spiders.
- 42:16So glad. We're all glad.
- 42:18Opinion there you might have my sister.
- 42:19Was the one in our family who had an issue with spiders, so
- 42:22that I used to wind her up. Yeah, you're welcome to have as
- 42:26many of my spiders as you want to.
- 42:28I Once Upon a time, this is not even a lie.
- 42:31I was sitting on my sofa in my flat that I owned, right?
- 42:35And a spider. I was.
- 42:36I didn't have a top on. A spider crawled over my
- 42:38shoulder and sat on my and we sat and watched the Doctor Who
- 42:41story together. He didn't move at all,
- 42:45especially big furry ones as well because I think they look
- 42:48really cute. Yeah, they're all the big ones
- 42:50that you can hold in your hand. Yeah.
- 42:53The only thing I don't like is that they can suddenly sort of
- 42:55twitch to life all of a sudden. That's the bit I don't like.
- 42:59It's it's the ones that are the quite big ones that suddenly you
- 43:04catch a glimpse of out of the corner of your eye that are
- 43:08crawling across your living room floor.
- 43:10And just sorry with really disturbing, Fraser, yeah.
- 43:16Well, so when, do you remember when Iraq was in the UK was
- 43:18broadcast, right? My, my pal Ali watched that and
- 43:21I was getting these texts basically just going, fuck this,
- 43:24I'm out like about 10 minutes in because she just kind of the bit
- 43:28of the spider under the bed. She was like, I'm never going to
- 43:30sleep again. So I sent her a picture of Sarah
- 43:32Jane with the spider on her back and she went, yeah, I'm never
- 43:35watching that. I mean it it it's, it's obvious
- 43:41to blow up. An insect, Yes, But this and
- 43:45this is the second season in a row where they've blown up an
- 43:48insect. And it works, and it grabs the
- 43:51imagination of the viewers. And nobody ever gets it.
- 43:56The thing that works so well about this cliffhanger is the
- 43:59incidental music leads straight into the sting of.
- 44:02Yeah, Dudley's on good form. Yes.
- 44:05Well, what's he doing? He's doing like a rattle thing,
- 44:07isn't he? Like, yeah.
- 44:10That's a little sort of thing. There's like a sting for the
- 44:14side side spider that merges straight into the sting for the.
- 44:20Yeah, and I have to say, although we we talked all over
- 44:23it, I I really loved the sort of mysterious music he gives to all
- 44:27the scenes with Professor Clegg as well.
- 44:29I think that's really, really nice.
- 44:33Yeah, it's remarkably confident. Episode one, you know, with lots
- 44:38of character bits and like I said, lots of mysteries and I
- 44:41would like to out with a question to the pair of you.
- 44:44I am shocked. OK.
- 44:46Which worked better? Spiders or maggots?
- 44:55Oh, oh. It might be the maggots.
- 45:00We're better In what respect? Well, I which?
- 45:04CSO which do you? Prefer.
- 45:06There you go. In what respect?
- 45:11Which had a more profound effect on you in scaring you.
- 45:15It's scary wise. It's spiders because spiders are
- 45:17scary. Maggots aren't.
- 45:18Maggots are just the maggots aren't scary.
- 45:21I've. Never had that ickiness of the
- 45:24spider of the maggots. I think it doesn't.
- 45:27And the trail of spot slime behind them.
- 45:30But there's not a there's not a fear factor with regards to
- 45:34spiders. You know you never get like
- 45:35maggot decorations at Halloween, do you?
- 45:38That's true. To be fair, like I've seen a few
- 45:41horror movies where you know, something's been unveiled and
- 45:44there's a corpse there, and there's maggots all red and
- 45:47blood as they're sucking away at the corpse.
- 45:50It's ick. It's not, you know, but markets
- 45:53up. Maggots are more icky.
- 45:55There's a primal fear in people about spiders, isn't there?
- 45:59And I think the genius is having them on the backs, having them
- 46:02leap on. People's backs.
- 46:05So good it was stolen by Russell T.
- 46:08And not done as well. No, no, sorry.
- 46:12The time beetle is one of the few missteps in turn.
- 46:16More of the only misstep I think in in turn left.
- 46:20Do you think they're realised well that the spiders in this?
- 46:23Yeah, I think it works. I like the fact that we've got
- 46:27spiders of different scales depending on what what they are
- 46:30and what they're asked to do. It's well thought out.
- 46:34You know what's really funny is you read Elizabeth Sladen's
- 46:37autobiography, and then you listen to John Pertwee talking
- 46:41on the special features of this, and they tell the same story,
- 46:44but from 2 very different points of view.
- 46:46So she's got arachnophobia and she.
- 46:49And so John Perry was like, right.
- 46:50So I took in a spider every single day and made it a bit
- 46:54bigger every single day of the rehearsals, because I knew she'd
- 46:57never get, you know, she'd never to do the, the, the shot on the
- 47:00day with the spiders as she's there in her book going bloody
- 47:04Jon Pertwee. I'm trying to do my rehearsal.
- 47:07He's coming up to me with these fucking spiders.
- 47:09She don't say fucking these bloody spiders.
- 47:12She goes, and you know, I would have been fine.
- 47:14I'm acting so, and I'm not exactly real.
- 47:17And she says once, and she says this on the commentaries.
- 47:20And once I'm in character, I can do that because it's not me.
- 47:25Yeah. And so you have to be brave and
- 47:27do it. And you can have a spider on
- 47:28your back. But John couldn't see that
- 47:30because John is John. She talks very affectionately
- 47:34about Jon Pertwee, but she also says that she knew her place and
- 47:39he basically not that he pushed her around, but his influence
- 47:43was on her performance, on her line readings on the show in
- 47:47general, like he was in charge. And I don't think Tom,
- 47:51particularly in the early days, was because he would defer to
- 47:55her because she had been there for longer.
- 47:57Oh, we've. All gone quiet.
- 48:02Well, there we go. That's the end of episode one.
- 48:05I'll cut it there. Boom.
- 48:08Hello, welcome. Over, I say.
- 48:11I'll cut it there. How dare you?
- 48:13And. Then you never do you.
- 48:16Never do.
