North America’s grasslands are rapidly being transformed as expanding trees and shrubs displace native wildlife, reduce forage and water supplies, increase wildfire risk, and threaten rural communities and economies. Protecting these landscapes requires preventing and addressing woody encroachment early through science-based tools, practices like prescribed fire, and coordinated partnerships among landowners, agencies, Tribes, and other conservation partners.
