- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the three O take
- 0:17presented by Chinook Cedary. This is episode 523.
- 0:21I'll be your host, Kyle Cord. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:23Reyes. Nate.
- 0:26Oh boy, what a weekend man this is.
- 0:31I told you before that day before opening day is like
- 0:35Christmas Eve. Then you got Christmas Day
- 0:37opening day. Except the day after Christmas
- 0:40sucks. It's the worst.
- 0:43This is just the kick off of like an entire Christmas season.
- 0:50Can I say something on that note?
- 0:53The day after opening day isn't the best.
- 0:57Well, I need to clarify something because there's some
- 0:59people that are really, really in their feelings about a post
- 1:03that I put out on this very matter.
- 1:06Look what I said after opening day.
- 1:14I said after taking the last 24 hours to digest opening day, the
- 1:18perfect recipe to improve it has been made clear.
- 1:21One, all third teams play 2 game, start at noon and then I
- 1:28didn't include it but in parentheses just know that I
- 1:30meant and then stagger throughout the rest of the day.
- 1:33So you've got baseball all day and then stop giving teams
- 1:36Friday off? Yeah.
- 1:39I can't tell you how many people I had in the comments.
- 1:43Not OK with that. Say, whoa, they give Friday off
- 1:47because of right now it's for Thursday.
- 1:50I didn't did I say that I cared what the reason was?
- 1:53I just said like, stop. I in a in a perfect world, you
- 1:57don't you, you just roll right into a A3 game set.
- 2:00You don't you don't open the season and then say, well, we're
- 2:03going to dial it way back to have like what, four games or
- 2:06something? I think there's more this year,
- 2:08but we've seen, we've seen Fridays after opening day in
- 2:11previous seasons where you, you just don't have many games.
- 2:15I get all that. I I understand the logistics of
- 2:18it. I'm just saying it sucks.
- 2:19In an ideal world, you just have a three-game.
- 2:21The the weather's perfect across the country and heck, even in
- 2:25Canada, we'll include them and you just play three games and
- 2:29you and you enjoy it. You, you enjoy a three-game set.
- 2:32I understand. Trust me every time I open
- 2:35TikTok a little comment notification drops down.
- 2:39It says well, Friday they they say for I get it rained outs.
- 2:43We know why. We I get it.
- 2:45I'm just saying that's a perfect recipe if it were possible.
- 2:52But hey, I mean, if you guys enjoy having the Friday off
- 2:55where there's no baseball, then so be it, but I'm with.
- 2:57You it's weird because it's like Thursday's amazing.
- 3:01It's a, it's, it's a great day and Friday you're like, but for
- 3:06those who are like maybe stuck at work or like didn't get a
- 3:12chance to fully take in the all day festivities of opening day,
- 3:18like Friday's almost like a 2 point, like a, you know what I
- 3:21mean? Like just try again.
- 3:23Like, hey, if you didn't, we're half of us are blown off work on
- 3:26Friday anyway, you know what I mean?
- 3:27So it's like, why not just enjoy that day the same way?
- 3:32Just run it back, repeat everything and like make Monday
- 3:39the the big day off, which it already is for most of these
- 3:42teams anyway. And if it's the big day off then
- 3:46make that the make up day. If you lose one of these games
- 3:49due to weather, well. So here's the thing on that and
- 3:53I don't want to spend too much time on it, but I, I did see
- 3:56people explaining that sort of taking a step further and
- 3:59saying, well, you don't want these teams to lose that opening
- 4:02day that that gate, those tickets that you get as like the
- 4:06official opening day. It's it's less about making up
- 4:09the game 'cause you can do that on a random Monday in July if.
- 4:13You want. That's true.
- 4:14It can always be added to a different series.
- 4:16Right. But they're saying like you have
- 4:18to have that first game done as soon as as you can.
- 4:22And so that's why if it doesn't work Thursday, then you do it
- 4:24Friday. So from that from that
- 4:27perspective, I understand. Again, I'm just saying in a
- 4:29perfect world, we've got baseball every day.
- 4:32No off days actually ever would be great.
- 4:35In fact, year round, make it year round.
- 4:37We don't need an offseason. Sure, we need less of these Nate
- 4:41Reyes funks that we just witnessed this past this past
- 4:46offseason. But opening weekend?
- 4:51I mean, I can't say it's officially in the books 'cause
- 4:52there's games going on right now, but somebody's got a got an
- 4:57anniversary, a one year anniversary to celebrate.
- 5:00Congratulations my friend, Thank you.
- 5:02Buddy, thank you. Thank you.
- 5:02So we're doing a little early recording here, but for all
- 5:06intents and purposes, opening weekend is is is wrapping up
- 5:11later today. A lot happened.
- 5:15Yeah. A lot happened and I feel like
- 5:18we say that every year, but I mean there's just, there's a lot
- 5:22I don't. Remember 1 like this.
- 5:25That I feel like we could dive into, but I want to start first.
- 5:30Actually, no, I was going to save this for last.
- 5:32Let's just get this out of the way because it was the first.
- 5:34I feel like it was the first thing that we were dealt on
- 5:38Thursday. MLBTV.
- 5:44What? How do you drop the ball that
- 5:47bad on Opening of all days for MLBTV not to work?
- 5:55I said it on our live stream on Thursday.
- 5:58You had all offseason to to tie up any loose ends, to make sure
- 6:04everything was buttoned up and to make sure something like this
- 6:09didn't happen. You had baseball fans across the
- 6:13country unable to watch Opening Day.
- 6:16And like I said on our live stream, this isn't like it.
- 6:20It honestly took a while for it to sink in with me.
- 6:22I'm like, this isn't just some, some, you know, big Sunday night
- 6:28game that we're, we're all tuning in for like a, you know,
- 6:32a Dodgers Padres game or something like this is the first
- 6:36game of the season and crickets, black screen and crickets.
- 6:44How so? As you know and as anybody that
- 6:47joined us in the stream knows, I was kind of in and out of work
- 6:50all day. Unfortunately, I did get to
- 6:53catch majority of the Yankees game, but the Yankees game was
- 6:55on ESPN. So like I personally, I was
- 6:59fine, but my other screens weren't able to really throw
- 7:04anything else on. So like, how long was that
- 7:06outage? It was a good chunk of time.
- 7:09I we're talking 30 minutes, 45 minutes.
- 7:12No, no, no, no. I've mentioned it on the on the
- 7:14stream. It for me at least it was an
- 7:16hour and a half. We were an hour and a half in
- 7:19from from when I flipped it on, which was, I mean, pretty early
- 7:23on because I, I think I had it, I think I had it on before the
- 7:27games got going just to see if they were doing any like
- 7:29festivities things. And it was for like an hour and
- 7:33a half it was out. And I'm going to talk about
- 7:36dropping the ball. And then, and then little cherry
- 7:40on top. I, I, I have to, I have to find
- 7:43this e-mail. I get this e-mail yesterday and
- 7:47I don't know, I'm I'm sure most other people got this.
- 7:49Dear loyal subscriber, Opening Day is one of the most exciting
- 7:53days on the baseball calendar. It's the first chance to watch
- 7:56your favorite team and players start competing for a World
- 7:59Series championship. And for over 20 years, MLBTV has
- 8:03consistently given you the chance to stream those Opening
- 8:05Day games from wherever you are. Unfortunately, MLBTV experienced
- 8:10a tech a technical issue yesterday that resulted in a
- 8:13temporary inability to access our live game streams.
- 8:16While our technical team addressed that issue immediately
- 8:18and restored access as soon as possible, we understand how
- 8:22disappointing this was to fans who were eagerly awaiting the
- 8:25start of the season. For that, we apologize.
- 8:27MLB fans deserve the best streaming experience possible
- 8:30and we will continue to strive to provide that.
- 8:32To thank you for your support of the national Pastime, MLB would
- 8:37like to offer you $10 off any purchase of $25 or more at
- 8:42mlbshop.com. See details below.
- 8:46Thanks, MLB. So you want more of my money for
- 8:50a mistake that I'm already paying for that Mark saw?
- 8:54No. Reimbursement for smart?
- 8:56Yeah, Apple got rid of their chargers and headphones so they
- 9:00can you can spend more money. MLBTV is following the same
- 9:03suit, dawg. I would have rather it honestly,
- 9:06I feel like it would have been a, a win for Major League
- 9:09Baseball. Like PR wise, if they came out
- 9:11and said we're going to give every subscriber a dollar back
- 9:14for their lot, for their, for their troubles.
- 9:18That would have been funny. I would have been like, you know
- 9:20what you're trying. That's a lot of money to have to
- 9:21give back. But like a dollar, give me a
- 9:23dollar and we'll call it even. But no, they said, here, spend
- 9:28more money on our things and we'll give you a little little,
- 9:31we'll cut you a little discount. You and I were talking about it
- 9:34before we hopped on Like it, it is a good deal.
- 9:36MLBTV like really, truly is not that bad of a deal when you
- 9:40consider like all of the subscriptions that an average
- 9:43American pays for. Whether you know, whatever
- 9:46streaming services you use, whatever quantity you use, if
- 9:50you're like me or you like you have 3 or 4 rolling at once and
- 9:55it's just hitting your your freaking account every month.
- 9:58So it is nice that there is like this lump sum that you can just
- 10:01kind of fork over at the beginning of the year.
- 10:04It's nice that you can like pick and choose like, hey, I'll just
- 10:07take this one team or I'll take the whole league or, you know,
- 10:09whatever it is. I do think that this is just one
- 10:14instance of many things that if you were to take a poll and talk
- 10:19to your fans, there's a lot that needs to be cleaned up.
- 10:23There's a lot that like just isn't very user friendly that
- 10:27isn't great. And I don't know man, like you
- 10:33would you would expect coming off of the most watched World
- 10:36Series in the number of years. And we're constantly getting
- 10:40reports of like how viewership is up, how numbers are up and
- 10:44how there's so many different ways to watch this.
- 10:46There's so many different screens that we have now.
- 10:49There's capabilities of taking in baseball.
- 10:51Like, you would think that there would be some sort of overhaul.
- 10:56No, no, it's the same thing. MLBTV looks the exact same.
- 11:01MLB Network is the exact same. You don't have new shows, you
- 11:05don't have new ideas. You're just rolling out the same
- 11:08stuff. And it is frustrating.
- 11:10It it, this does get old and if you were to clean some of this
- 11:14up, I think you could probably charge another 50 bucks per
- 11:18subscription and we would happily fork it over because
- 11:20there really isn't another option.
- 11:23It's true. There's no other option.
- 11:26They are monopolizing this entire game.
- 11:31So it's like, I can't blame you for not cleaning stuff up.
- 11:37I will. I complain in a few years when
- 11:40you do Add all these things in and it does go up in rate
- 11:44probably. But be better.
- 11:47Just be better and don't drop the ball on our freaking day.
- 11:55All right, we got that out of the way.
- 11:56Let's start. Let's the rest is positive, I
- 11:58promise. Speaking of, well, positive for
- 12:01you, less so for me. Yankees just make an absolute
- 12:07home run history, a lot of home runs this weekend, not just from
- 12:10the Yankees, but from really across the league, but
- 12:12specifically looking at the Yankees.
- 12:17But let's talk. Let's get into what I feel like
- 12:19people really want to hear about and, and discuss these, these
- 12:22torpedo bats. What in the world, What in the
- 12:30world? I, I, first of all, I didn't
- 12:31even know these were legal, but they are.
- 12:35Second of all, I mean, there's no way that or maybe it is, is
- 12:43this the sole reason we saw what we saw yesterday on on Saturday
- 12:48with what was it, nine home runs?
- 12:509. Nine home runs, a new franchise
- 12:54record, I believe, or tied the franchise record.
- 12:56New franchise record. One short of the the league
- 13:02record, I believe. Right league.
- 13:03Record was 10, which was the Blue Jays the Blue Jays also did
- 13:07it a different time with nine in a different year, obviously the
- 13:12same game they got both of those, but a different time, a
- 13:14different season they got 9. So it's there was only the
- 13:17second time ever that a team has hit nine home runs in a game.
- 13:22No. Like at and whoever is going to
- 13:25sit here and call me a Homer, that's fine.
- 13:27But like Jazz and Volpi are the only ones that have come out and
- 13:31said that they they're using it. Did they both go deep?
- 13:34Yes. Did one of them go deep again
- 13:38today? Yes.
- 13:39Mere minutes ago. But the reality is is that like
- 13:43bats are always changing. They've always changed.
- 13:50They've always been adjusted. Barrel sizes come in a variety.
- 13:56All of these hitters have different sizing that they
- 13:59prefer, different handles, different knobs, different
- 14:02thicknesses. I think this is just one of the
- 14:07last remaining options as some type of adaptive adjustment and
- 14:16what you're seeing here for those that are unfortunately
- 14:19just listening audio, get on YouTube first of all, or join in
- 14:23on our stream so you can see the video.
- 14:26But the instead of the thicker part of the barrel being at
- 14:30towards the end of the bat, it has now moved down lower than
- 14:35what your normal sweet spot would be and almost closer to
- 14:37the label. And during the broadcast
- 14:40yesterday, they were talking about how, you know, our
- 14:44analytics are constantly adjusting mechanics now and that
- 14:48there's different ways you've seen pictures change their grip
- 14:52or arm angle or, you know, whatever to basically maximize
- 14:58their potential and whatever that, you know, that Endeavour
- 15:01is. But with these bats, they were
- 15:04saying is that like some of these guys like Jazz and Volpe,
- 15:06a lot of their contact has been lower on the label, so that the
- 15:11idea was to lower that sweet spot and, and bring it down.
- 15:16The barrel isn't any bigger. It's not illegal, like you said,
- 15:24the sweet spot is just in a different place.
- 15:27And for those who have played any of us that have had the
- 15:31chance to have a different type of bat, whether it's metal,
- 15:35whether it's wood throughout our time of playing, like you kind
- 15:39of play around with what feels good, kind of play around with
- 15:42what feels comfortable. Do you like it and loaded?
- 15:45Do you like more weight in the hands?
- 15:46Do you, you know, like how do you prefer it basically?
- 15:50And this is just an innovative way.
- 15:52Like, I get that it is somewhat polarizing because of what team
- 15:58it's attached to. I get that it is polarizing
- 16:01because it may or may not be a coincidence that they just put
- 16:04up nine home runs and twenty runs in a game.
- 16:08But this is legal. And you know, no one freaked out
- 16:12when axe handles started becoming a thing 5-6 years ago.
- 16:16You know what I mean? No one freaked out when knobs
- 16:19were completely removed. No one freaked out when giant
- 16:23knobs where a lot of the weight sat in the hands started coming
- 16:26out. No one's really talking about
- 16:30the transition from when we were kids.
- 16:32You watched a lot of ash bats being used and that's why you
- 16:36had those blow up splintered black bats everywhere when bats
- 16:40broke. Now you just see barrels flying
- 16:42because a lot of these guys are using Maple.
- 16:45So like bats are going to change throughout our game.
- 16:49They've you go back to what's that video when Bryce was 16
- 16:54swinging the the Babe Ruth sized bat.
- 16:57Where's a 40 oz bat? Right, Like right, right.
- 17:00Like you know what I mean? So when we're talking about the
- 17:04equipment adapting to what the game style is, the reason those
- 17:08guys were using such heavier bats back in the day is because
- 17:12the velocity wasn't as high. Now that velocity is up, you're
- 17:16seeing an A change to bats. I, I don't see the issue
- 17:22personally. And if you want to come at like
- 17:24me for being a Homer, if you want to come at the Yankees for
- 17:27doing it, I know I think it was Savale that came out and said
- 17:30that because it's the Yankees, they'll let it slide.
- 17:32Like what are we talking about? Like it.
- 17:36Every player has the ability to choose and customize their
- 17:41equipment in this way. Well, Spencer in the chat, not
- 17:44to cut you off, Spencer in the chat did ask.
- 17:46He said should everyone be required to swing the same model
- 17:49weight bat? And I, I, I didn't play the big
- 17:55league level, but I, at the very least I played competitive
- 17:59baseball. And I, I, I understand that that
- 18:05would almost be an impossible ask to make, make a singular bat
- 18:10universal across the league in terms of specs and everything,
- 18:13because that there is way too much nuance to like you
- 18:18mentioned the different types of wood, the, the, where the weight
- 18:22is distributed, the, the flex that each bat has, whether it's
- 18:26more or less. There's there's so much at play
- 18:29there that I think as long as you're meeting the the
- 18:33specifications requirements set forth by the league, everything
- 18:37else is fair game. And the same thing applies to
- 18:40this torpedo thing. Where does it end?
- 18:43Gloves, batting gloves, cleats. Where does it end?
- 18:49Are you talking about if if anybody watched any Cubs or
- 18:53Diamondbacks games this weekend, you saw that, you know, P Crow
- 18:58Armstrong and and Corbin Carroll wear like a lower almost looking
- 19:03like a soccer cleat compared to some of these other guys that
- 19:07are like a lot of them you see like Jordans or like Air Force
- 19:09ones or whatever, like there's a different style there.
- 19:12Are we talking about an advantage to their speed because
- 19:16of the type of cleats they're wearing?
- 19:18Should we change everyone from, you know, molded spikes to metal
- 19:23spikes to like, what are we doing?
- 19:27I, I don't understand what the argument is that the beauty of
- 19:30our game is that it's done in so many different sizes.
- 19:35It's the beauty of our game is that a Jose Altuve can compete
- 19:38against an Aaron Judge. That's, that's what the beauty
- 19:42of our game is. That's what encompasses this
- 19:45game. It's a, it's a mesh of
- 19:47athleticism compared to when it comes down to it, it's just a, a
- 19:52ball and a stick against a hitter and a pitcher, right?
- 19:56So like, where do we draw the line?
- 19:59Are you upset that an outfield glove is?
- 20:03Massive. I don't know.
- 20:04I I watched Corbin Carroll yesterday and I swore that his
- 20:07glove is a 14 inch glove. It's huge, right?
- 20:11He's a tiny guy, but yeah. I, I just, I don't understand
- 20:15why we're getting heated about this.
- 20:17I I can see why it immediately raises eyebrows based on what
- 20:24they did yesterday offensively, but like, let's not take away
- 20:29from the fact that Judge had three of those and Judge ain't
- 20:32changing his bat. Yeah.
- 20:34What was the quote? What was the quote from Judge?
- 20:37He said what I've done. They asked him if he if he used
- 20:40the torpedo bat or why he didn't use it.
- 20:42And he said what I've done the last few years speaks for
- 20:45itself. In other words, saying like
- 20:48thanks, but no thanks, don't need it.
- 20:49I don't. Know maybe be better Brewers
- 20:51pitching. Sorry, yeah.
- 20:54Yeah, quite literally in the chat yesterday had more to do
- 20:56with poor pitching than to do with those new bats.
- 20:58Yeah, I'd agree. I mean, when you're which we
- 21:00didn't even mention, but when you're Nestor Cortez just laying
- 21:03in three, get me over like that's tough, man.
- 21:08My goodness, how do you do that? You you know that line up better
- 21:13than anybody on that staff. You got to know that what you
- 21:15did wasn't going to work. That plan of attack was not
- 21:18going to work. But yeah, anyway, enough on the
- 21:22enough on the the torpedo bats. I feel like we covered covered
- 21:27most that and for the record, I'll speak for Nate, but I don't
- 21:31think Nate's frustration is with Spencer for asking the question
- 21:34about. No, not at all.
- 21:36Spencer's my guy. We love Spencer, but it's more
- 21:38of a question about the narrative.
- 21:40And you know, I'm I can't stand the Yankees as much as the next
- 21:43guy, but even I can look at this and go, you know, if it adheres
- 21:46to the rules set forth by the league, that's where the
- 21:49conversation starts to do it, right, Right.
- 21:52I mean, that's where the conversation should start and
- 21:54end. Does it meet the like, are there
- 21:55rules set in place? Do the do these bats adhere to
- 21:58those rules? If so, conversation's over.
- 22:01It's just it's they were, like you said, first ones to do it.
- 22:04They were more. Crowded in that way, I guess
- 22:06like we we've seen a lot of this different type of stuff.
- 22:09I have. I have my own thoughts on the
- 22:11other. Stuff.
- 22:11I don't love the oven either. I think it it bugs me, but
- 22:14again, like if it adheres to the rule book, the hell let it
- 22:19slide. Pun intended.
- 22:24Speaking of home runs, the OS and we talked about this on the
- 22:27live stream on Thursday coming out with an absolute bang dude.
- 22:33The OS came out put up, I think. Well, it doesn't.
- 22:37Anything I say about the Orioles now is going to be completely
- 22:39overshadowed by what the Yankees did on Saturday.
- 22:42But Opening Day, I was feeling very, very good about my my
- 22:49preseason prediction that the OS are going to lead the league in
- 22:52home runs 'cause they came out put up 6.
- 22:54I think Adley had. Adley had.
- 22:57Two said he had two. Said he had two.
- 23:01I think yesterday Westburg had or the day yesterday he.
- 23:07Had yeah, he had one Thursday and one yesterday.
- 23:10I don't know if he had two in one game or not, I thought.
- 23:12He had a pair, but my goodness, dude, yo is coming out swinging
- 23:16in Toronto, which for me, I love to see for that pic of mine, but
- 23:22it's more, you know, like it it's.
- 23:25Did you you remind me where you had them finishing?
- 23:30Are they in a wild? Are they in a wild card spot?
- 23:32Yeah, I had, I had them. Let me confirm here.
- 23:37I believe they were my first wild card, second wild card
- 23:44behind Houston. So with that, you can go ahead
- 23:49and and understand the reality that I do not have the Yankees
- 23:52make in the the playoffs, which is bold on my part I, I do I, I
- 23:58do declare, I acknowledge, but that's the beauty of baseball.
- 24:03What do you think can happen but I do?
- 24:05Declare. But but the you don't have to
- 24:09say declare after everything. Yeah, the as great as it was to
- 24:14see the OS coming out swinging it it it wasn't surprising to me
- 24:19that that's the narrative that we saw right out of the gate is
- 24:21you got the O that you got that line up bopping.
- 24:23I think Jackson even game two had a bop of his own.
- 24:26So that's great. That's encouraging to see.
- 24:29But it's more about the it's more about the question marks
- 24:32surrounding the the staff. Yeah, no.
- 24:34What? Are we going to see from that?
- 24:36This wasn't in question, right? This part of their I mean like
- 24:38we knew that these guys being one year older, just more ABS
- 24:43under their belt, like the opportunity to settle in.
- 24:45We knew that this lineup was going to bang.
- 24:47We knew that Adley added down near last year and he was going
- 24:50to turn it around. Like and I'm not saying this is
- 24:52definitive for the rest of the year.
- 24:54Sure. I think these are the things
- 24:56that we knew were their strengths.
- 24:59It's just they're it's just they're pitching.
- 25:01And on the opposite side of the thing, like Blue Jays pitching
- 25:08is what like it needs to, it needs all things need to go
- 25:12right for the Blue Jays. Yeah, all things need to go
- 25:15right. And this is a tough start.
- 25:18This is a real tough start. The guy didn't have a tough
- 25:25start. Tyler O'Neill, when does, when
- 25:28does that end? Let me, let me just pose that to
- 25:31the group, to the chat. Now right to the.
- 25:35Public year 6 now I'm thinking after five, I'm thinking after
- 25:40he hits he he gets 5 for the Sox last year.
- 25:43I'm thinking that's a nice, I mean, it's not like a a round
- 25:48Number per SE, but like 5. That's a that's a healthy
- 25:51benchmark to reach. Yeah.
- 25:52Surely he doesn't get the six signs with the O's.
- 25:56What does he do? Goes yard opening day.
- 25:59It's now at six, which begs the question like, is this just is
- 26:06this the the the characteristic of his career?
- 26:10Is this his like his thing? Like you got Chris Davis for the
- 26:14A's back in the day, he was just the 247 guy.
- 26:18And even even now, Tyler O'Neill surpassed the the amount of
- 26:21years that Chris Davis went 247 consecutively.
- 26:25So it's not even the greatest comparison.
- 26:27But it's like, is this just who he is now?
- 26:29Is this what he does? What do you have more faith in?
- 26:31Do you have more faith in Tyler O'Neill going deep on opening
- 26:35day or the Castellanos home run during some type of tragedy?
- 26:41I mean, I hate to say it and not to like, you know.
- 26:45There's more opportunity for Castellanos.
- 26:47To right, but on that, but before that reason, you know,
- 26:50not to not to bring light to it, but you know, there's a lot of
- 26:54business, a lot of lot of negative things going on in the
- 26:57world right now. And I don't I don't think
- 26:59Castellanos can keep up with with all that's going on.
- 27:02So, you know, if it just means one day a year.
- 27:07Tyler O'Neill take going yard then I'm going to I'm going to
- 27:11put my money there. But what it what an incredible
- 27:13start and you know O's fans, it seems, can't even enjoy it
- 27:17because they're already writing them off going well, this is
- 27:20great and all, but I'm sure he'll be out with some sort of
- 27:23pulled hamstring or something by next week, which hey from a
- 27:28short for from a short or limited perspective, I'll say on
- 27:32his his short time in Boston. I I understand where they're
- 27:36coming from, but you know, Now's Orioles try to be optimistic.
- 27:40No. Well, that's what I was going to
- 27:41say. Orioles fans have so quickly
- 27:43become cynical because of expectations that have been
- 27:49added to the mix. It's funny to watch a fan like a
- 27:53like a a group of fans that are optimistic about the future.
- 28:01It's been so cold and dark for a long period of time and it's
- 28:07just quickly like just in a year or two with expectations that
- 28:12show up to become quickly cynical.
- 28:17It's funny. It's funny to why it's like for
- 28:19some for some fan bases that have just been in that survived
- 28:24their entire lives as this welcome, welcome.
- 28:30You know, they're probably thinking like you don't.
- 28:32You don't become a survivor by by being optimistic all the
- 28:36time. Everything's sunshine and
- 28:37rainbows sometimes. You just got to let reality sink
- 28:40in and like this is going to suck.
- 28:42But we just got to keep, we got to keep pushing.
- 28:44Forward. We're sickos, man.
- 28:46You're just going to continue to get beat down the same way we
- 28:50come. Back, I bet you the OS could
- 28:52legitimately win the World Series and Orioles fans would be
- 28:54like, they're going to a scandal's going to drop and
- 28:58they're going to revoke our title.
- 28:59Like what? Something's going to happen.
- 29:01I don't believe it's true. They're sick, they're sick
- 29:04fanbase, but boy do we love them.
- 29:05Boy do we love them. Keeping it in the DMV.
- 29:09Mackenzie Gore. Let's talk about that real
- 29:11quick. This was one of actually one of
- 29:16the highlights that I included on my opening day overreactions
- 29:19graphic that I posted I think Saturday.
- 29:23Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. This is cool though, it was a
- 29:25cool step. Yeah, so he became He joined Bob
- 29:29Gibson as the only Opening day starter to allow no runs, no
- 29:32walks while striking out 13. I spy Bob Gibson in the video
- 29:39right now. Shout out Bob Gibson, the man
- 29:43himself, right there. How about it?
- 29:46Looking at the Chinooks. He's he's he's sizing them up,
- 29:50I'll tell you that much. But yeah, man, what a start from
- 29:55Mackenzie Gore in this. And what were we talking about
- 29:59it on the live stream? Possibly, yeah, I think it was
- 30:01the stream. Yeah, where I was saying that
- 30:03like people in this area who fall more so on the casual side
- 30:08of of fandom when it comes to the Nationals, which I'll admit
- 30:11there's a lot around here, like you've got your die hard, sure.
- 30:14But this is such a transient area, very like extremely
- 30:18transient. I think I undersell it just how
- 30:20transient it is. So it's really hard for people
- 30:22in this, in this area, this region to really latch on to the
- 30:27Nats because they're, they're here for a little bit and
- 30:29they're gone not too soon after or, or soon after, I should say.
- 30:36And so you got a, a bunch of casual nationals fans out here
- 30:40going, you know, the, the, you know, Soto trade goes down and
- 30:43they go, OK, well, what do we have to look forward to?
- 30:46And it's like just, and I've said this before on this, on
- 30:49this podcast, I, I would tell them like, just be patient.
- 30:53You've got some pieces coming back in the mix that sure.
- 30:57Are they going to, are you going to achieve Soto in the aggregate
- 30:59as a result? Probably not.
- 31:02But you're going to have, you're going to have pieces that if,
- 31:05if, if, if managed well, if given the right opportunities,
- 31:10will serve as pretty substantial pieces in whatever picture that
- 31:15you build up in whatever, in whatever movement that you craft
- 31:19as an organization moving forward.
- 31:21And I think that's worth being excited about.
- 31:23And Mackenzie Gore, I would tell people I keep an eye on
- 31:25Mackenzie Gore and myself, I was a believer in Mackenzie Gore the
- 31:29last, the last last couple seasons.
- 31:31You know, I'd pick him up in fantasy, which, you know, may
- 31:34not sound like a lot to to most people, but like, you have to
- 31:38have some sort of belief in a guy to give him the, you know,
- 31:42the sign of approval to add him to your fantasy team.
- 31:44You're like, all right, this guy could, could, could contribute
- 31:47here. And, and again, I understand
- 31:49it's just one start, but this is this has to be encouraging for
- 31:53the Nationals and their fans that a guy that you've been sort
- 31:56of waiting to be this good is finally giving you a glimpse
- 32:00into what could. Be Yeah, yeah, we were talking
- 32:04about on the stream a little bit.
- 32:05But I think we get so impatient as just as baseball fans with
- 32:16with prospects, we get impatient with prospects that maybe are,
- 32:24you know, top 100 in baseball when they're when they're making
- 32:29their debut. And if it takes a year or two
- 32:33before they kind of live up to that status, we almost just kind
- 32:38of throw in the towel. We almost give up on them a
- 32:40little bit. And especially if they're
- 32:43involved in in trades like they have been.
- 32:45And Mackenzie Gore is a perfect example of that.
- 32:49And you got to remember, like with that being said, if they
- 32:51are being involved with trades and they're bouncing around
- 32:54between cities and they haven't even like really truly settled
- 32:57in yet, how many pitching coaches they've had?
- 33:01How many philosophies have they had thrown at them?
- 33:03How many catchers have they had, right?
- 33:05So like, all of these different things are factoring in and
- 33:08you're like, this guy hasn't even gotten a chance to to take
- 33:12a breath yet. Yesterday was his debut.
- 33:15And now he's on his third city wearing his third uniform and
- 33:19and he still hasn't like gotten enough innings.
- 33:22He still hasn't gotten on the dirt enough.
- 33:25So it's weird, man. Like, you see young names like a
- 33:30Jackson Merrill, like a Jackson Cheerio, like a Paul Skeens that
- 33:34just immediately come up. And they're like productive and
- 33:37they're All Stars and they're leading, you know, their team in
- 33:42major stat categories. And you're like, this is what
- 33:44every prospect should be. No, no, no, no.
- 33:47Those are the those are the exceptions, you know what I
- 33:51mean? You got to remember that most of
- 33:53these guys for as long as you and I have watched baseball
- 33:57typically aren't even really showing up until 2627.
- 34:02And they're right, you know what I mean?
- 34:03Like now that we're seeing guys at 1920, like we've, we've
- 34:08become forgetful that it, it does take a few years to settle
- 34:13in. It does take a certain amount of
- 34:15Absa, certain amount of innings pitched to really, truly find
- 34:19your stuff. Not to mention hopefully finding
- 34:22a pitching coach or philosophy with a specific franchise that
- 34:25kind of like sits in and agrees with your specific skill set.
- 34:30So I would just say this is a great reminder that like don't
- 34:35give up on these guys just because it's been a few years.
- 34:37Yeah, I mean, I would say that's a blessing and a curse of of the
- 34:41league's promotion of its young stars is like we're.
- 34:45It's a blessing that you get to see how much talent is is around
- 34:49the game at such a young age. But the curse of that is, is
- 34:54leading people into a false sense of understanding or, or
- 34:57belief that everybody at that age is, is comparable on talent.
- 35:04The reality of it is, is that maybe at some point in their
- 35:07career they reach that level of stardom.
- 35:09But the majority of these guys, they're not going to be like,
- 35:12they're not going to be like a Wan Soto.
- 35:14When they come up at, at whatever age they come up at it.
- 35:18Like you said, they it may not be till 26 that we really see
- 35:22these guys peak or or or blossom or or hit their prime, hit their
- 35:26stride. In the early 30s, like that's
- 35:30what I'm saying. It's just very different for
- 35:32everybody. And now on a much like less deep
- 35:36analysis, beginning of the year is a lot of times just a
- 35:43crapshoot. Like you have no idea.
- 35:46Like I, I had my father-in-law, he texts me every once in a
- 35:49while for bets. So he likes to just throw, you
- 35:51know, 20-50 bucks on a game and just you know, why not?
- 35:55And he texts me of the Cubs and and Diamondbacks opening day
- 35:59game and it was steel versus gallon.
- 36:02And I was like, dude, I this time, like, I don't know.
- 36:05I've I've no, I've nothing to offer you.
- 36:06Like we don't know you have either a group of hitters that
- 36:11maybe don't feel settled in or ready yet.
- 36:13You have a pitcher who's still working through stuff and maybe
- 36:16hasn't found a certain pitch. Like you just it's a crapshoot
- 36:19right now. So I'm not to take away from
- 36:21Mackenzie Gore's, Mackenzie Gore's performance, like maybe
- 36:25the Phillies just haven't really like as a group offensively
- 36:29found their groove yet. And duh, it's fresh.
- 36:33We're still figuring it out. So great start, build off of it.
- 36:37Hope McKenzie Ward blossoms into what he should be and what has
- 36:40been expected of him. But at the same time, I'm like,
- 36:42yo, the Phillies are going to be fine.
- 36:44Just give him some time. Speaking of a good start, the
- 36:49Los Angeles Dodgers look at us more than halfway through before
- 36:54we mentioned the Dodgers. Yay.
- 36:58I mean, you can only say so much about it, but I feel like it's
- 37:02still worth noting. As of right now, five and O
- 37:06start the year. They're the Sunday night game,
- 37:09right? Sounds right.
- 37:12We were just talking about this. They're, weren't they?
- 37:15I mean, weren't they the night game opening day as well?
- 37:19No. Well, they're the prime time
- 37:21game, Yeah, but they weren't A10 O clock game.
- 37:24They're Oh no, it's Perez Padres.
- 37:27They, oh, they're not even playing today.
- 37:33How about? That that's right, they didn't
- 37:35take Friday off. That yeah, OK, that's what it
- 37:37was. So it's like, yeah, they, I
- 37:38mean, they've, as we know with the Japan thing, they've they've
- 37:41already had a, a wonky start to the season.
- 37:43But yeah, so there you go. 5 and O to start the year.
- 37:51Dude, I'm, I don't know if you've been seeing this stuff
- 37:54with Mookie. I'm I'm genuinely concerned for
- 37:57the guy. He How many pounds did he lose?
- 38:00To say I think he's at like 2025. 25 and he.
- 38:04Already not a big guy. And he, yeah, and he, he looks
- 38:07it too. Dude, it, it does not look good.
- 38:09But. See, like, in his, like,
- 38:10cheekbones are dropping out, Yeah.
- 38:12Yeah, right. And he doesn't, I mean, like you
- 38:15said, he's already kind of kind of a tiny guy.
- 38:18And and even right now he doesn't have much mass on those
- 38:21on those arms, like not much muscle there.
- 38:24I thought, well, what was the I think it was yesterday or maybe
- 38:29the day before he hit a ball to like the track in left field.
- 38:31And I was like that it, the swing he put on it like
- 38:34everything looked like, oh, that's 5-6 rows deep.
- 38:38Nope, fly out to the track and I'm like, that makes sense.
- 38:42That makes sense. 25 lbs is crazy, dude.
- 38:46I think not to, not to go on like a weird little conspiracy
- 38:51thing, but like I've, I've heard that the norovirus is going
- 38:55around. My, my beautiful bride
- 38:59unfortunately dealt with that last week.
- 39:01And I think it's just like it's going around, man, where you
- 39:05just, you can't keep food down. And that sounds like some of his
- 39:10symptoms that he was dealing with.
- 39:12Sucks yeah, dude, there's some there's some crazy stuff going
- 39:16around right now. But you know, all that to say,
- 39:18he even the fact that he played yeah, the fact that he even
- 39:22suited up was was commendable enough because that that is not
- 39:26fun to deal with, I would imagine.
- 39:27But not did he not only did he just suit up, he's able.
- 39:30I mean, he he's winning a ball games essentially.
- 39:33He's he's still showing out, which is very, very encouraging
- 39:37for for him and the team. But yeah, you know, par for the
- 39:42course. Dodgers just going out and do
- 39:43what they do. Trying to think Roki how to,
- 39:50Trying to remember Roki didn't look terribly sharp.
- 39:55No, the Yamamoto looked good. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:59What? Looks real good.
- 40:00What was Sasaki's line again? I was trying to remember.
- 40:11Through two starts, he's only got he's got 99 walks and five
- 40:16KS over 7. That's through two starts, so.
- 40:22Said it before for those who didn't know this.
- 40:27If you live under a rock, baseballs are different over
- 40:31here. That's it.
- 40:33Takes some time to figure it out.
- 40:35That's what it was. It was an 18 2/3, three hits,
- 40:38two earned runs, four walks, 2 strikeouts.
- 40:40And of his 61 pitches, only 32 were strikes.
- 40:43So it's a command thing that that certainly exists there
- 40:49right now. Not to say that it's going to
- 40:50carry on for for long, but that is certainly that is the issue
- 40:55that he is he is that is currently derailing his his
- 40:59starts right now, because if you can't spot the ball, you're not
- 41:02going to last long in these starts.
- 41:04That's just the reality of it. No matter how good you are
- 41:06overseas hitters over here will also be able to adjust and
- 41:12majority of guys in this league know how to how to spit on
- 41:15stuff. They're not going to just give
- 41:17you you. You can't just think well,
- 41:20because I I have the talent that I have that you're going to luck
- 41:23in the guys just giving you swings, giving you strikes,
- 41:26giving you outs. Like guys are going to wait for
- 41:28their pitches and if you're not spotting up, if you're not
- 41:31hitting the zone, you're not going to have a very long
- 41:33outing. You're not your.
- 41:34Your day is going to be pretty short.
- 41:36I think that on top of the fact like nothing against Japanese
- 41:41baseball, I think hitters are obviously better over here, but
- 41:45I also think that pitchers are better and hitters are used to
- 41:50seeing Roki Sasaki type movement all the time.
- 41:56Whereas in Japan, obviously Sasaki is like at the top of the
- 42:01mountain, right? He's, he's the one that's, you
- 42:03know, leading the way. So it's like everyone else is
- 42:05below him right now. When you come over here, hitters
- 42:09are like, dude up. See, I saw this yesterday from
- 42:12someone's 3 starter. You know what I mean?
- 42:15Like, that's how talented the MLB is.
- 42:17So it's just, it's just a learning curve.
- 42:20I, I wouldn't be worried. And that's the beauty of being
- 42:23absolutely stacked is that the Dodgers don't need to be worried
- 42:26at all. Be patient and let him figure it
- 42:30out. On the flip side down the road,
- 42:35the Angels making headlines for all the wrong reasons on opening
- 42:40day, rolling out a position player down.
- 42:44I think they were down 8 when they when they brought in.
- 42:48Was it? Who did they bring in?
- 42:51I got to be honest, I didn't. I didn't take anything in from
- 42:58that series at all really. Nor.
- 42:59Should you? Yeah.
- 43:03Not a not a great look to start the year if I'm if I'm being
- 43:06completely honest, I'm I'm not entirely sure why a position
- 43:15player is even in the mix to start the season when literally
- 43:20nobody has has pitched. I mean, I understand getting
- 43:26your work in spring training and certain guys are on schedules,
- 43:29but like do we have nobody to just come in and and sort of mop
- 43:32up? Like what?
- 43:34Inning was it in? Are we already trying to load
- 43:36manage here? Let me see.
- 43:40Because like, it's one thing the Brewers did it in the Yankees
- 43:45game yesterday and it was Jake Bowers and it was just the
- 43:49bottom of the eighth now. It was bottom.
- 43:53Eighth story. OK, so I mean it.
- 43:55That was an 11 run game for Nikki.
- 43:57Lopez. Poor guy.
- 44:01Yeah, I don't know. I mean, yeah, I, it's hard to
- 44:06say. I, I think the only thing I can
- 44:10somewhat expect is that like these guys, these managers do
- 44:15have like a schedule that they're really focused on at the
- 44:18beginning of the year. And it's very strange when you
- 44:21have some guys maybe aren't ramped up, some guys that are
- 44:26you're trying to figure out like you got 2 off days really early
- 44:30for Friday and Monday. We need to make sure we balance
- 44:32out like I don't, I don't know, maybe that's a part of it.
- 44:35I'm not too worried about it. I'm not that surprised either.
- 44:38I mean, look at it's the Angels, it's what you're going to get.
- 44:46It's probably won't be the last time you get position player on
- 44:50the bump this year. Speaking of things not to be
- 44:55worried about thoughts on, I mean, I have my own thoughts,
- 44:59but this Rafael Dever situation, I don't know if you've seen just
- 45:03how bad of a start he's gotten off to through through
- 45:08yesterday's games, because I know they're playing right now.
- 45:11Through yesterday's games had 12 ABS and I want to say yeah, over
- 45:181210 KS, over 12 with 10 KS. There's a lot that you could pin
- 45:26this on, a lot of different angles I feel like you could
- 45:29take and I don't want to speculate beyond reason, but you
- 45:38have to think you just this has to be directly tied to
- 45:46everything that happened with the third base DH thing, right?
- 45:49Like, I mean, he, he's gotten off to slow starts before, but I
- 45:52mean 10 strikeouts, which is some, some sort of record I'd
- 45:58have to confirm. I'm my perspective, my opinion,
- 46:06which this is all this podcast ever is, it's just our opinions.
- 46:10Let me just let me add that stat real quick. 10 times Strike has
- 46:14struck out 10 times through three games.
- 46:15Again, through yesterday's games, an MLB record through the
- 46:18first three games of a season. Yeah, it's a tough one to hold.
- 46:23I'm going to I'm going to start this was by saying I I think
- 46:27Jeffers is obviously a top 10 hitter in the league when he's
- 46:34going right, which he will go right.
- 46:37This isn't forever. I, I'm not calling him not a
- 46:42winner, but in my mind from an outsider and non Red Sox fan, my
- 46:50view on the fact that like you have everyone in that clubhouse
- 46:56ready to turn the page and get into the next chapter of of what
- 47:00their team is, what this franchise needs to get back to
- 47:03being. And when everyone in that
- 47:06clubhouse is saying, put me wherever I'll hit whatever spot,
- 47:10I'll play whatever spot in the field, I don't care.
- 47:14I want to help this team win. And the one single voice is
- 47:18your, is your franchise player, is your highest paid player, is
- 47:23the one coming out saying I played third.
- 47:28No, I I played third. I played third.
- 47:33It's tough. Man, it's just.
- 47:35It's yeah. And I don't want to.
- 47:36I don't want to beat this this. Horse No, I'm not going to beat
- 47:38it up either. But what I'm saying is that,
- 47:40like, if you're not in and you're the only one not in, that
- 47:47starts to weigh on you. And I said this in the
- 47:50offseason. I said this before they got
- 47:52Bregman. I said I had a feeling that Rafi
- 47:55Devers is someone who doesn't like only being at on the field
- 48:024 * a game. There's something about being
- 48:06able to have a bad day at the plate and make up for it
- 48:11defensively or vice versa. There's something about that
- 48:15that we've had if, if you've been playing long enough and for
- 48:19these guys that have been blessed to continue to play,
- 48:21we've had that our whole time playing from four or five years
- 48:25old. We've gotten the opportunity to
- 48:28be on both sides of the ball. Then maybe mentally he's just
- 48:33someone that doesn't know how to handle doing that.
- 48:38And if you're coming in to a point of going against your your
- 48:43franchise's wishes and saying, I'm not doing that, you got to
- 48:49assume that it's going to magnify those difficulties or
- 48:55those insecurities that you may have about accept accepting
- 49:00their role. I'm not surprised.
- 49:02I'm not surprised. I think it'd be very different
- 49:06if he said, you know what, hand up.
- 49:08I'm going to do whatever this this team needs me to do.
- 49:11I'm the leader, I'm the one that they've invested in the most.
- 49:15I have to be able to say, put my pride aside and say I'll do what
- 49:19I need to do. And I I would have understood,
- 49:23hey, I'm struggling as ADH after saying that, but to start saying
- 49:30no, I play third, I'm not ADH. You kind of shoot yourself in
- 49:38the foot, man. Like you, you're not really
- 49:40giving yourself much room for grace.
- 49:45And now it's just like a no one's really surprised on your
- 49:49performance. It's at least my take on it.
- 49:52I guess, but like I said, it's it's hard to make it up in the
- 49:55field when you're also the worst defensive third baseman in
- 50:00baseball. Like it doesn't leave much room
- 50:03for for changing up your your mentality, your mindset when
- 50:09you're not doing well in the field either.
- 50:14Like so. And clearly, maybe I, I mean, I
- 50:17guess you're right to the point where like he was able to to do
- 50:20enough in the field, maybe to keep his mind off of it.
- 50:23But it's not like he's going out there and setting the world on
- 50:28fire with his defensive play to be like, OK, you know, what if
- 50:31I'm if I'm not able to take care of things at the plate, I'm sure
- 50:34I'm certainly going to take care of things over here at the hot
- 50:36corner. When again, he's the worst
- 50:39defensive third baseman in baseball since he debuted.
- 50:42So I don't, you know, I don't know.
- 50:45All Has he gotten any innings at first in his career?
- 50:52Is it that bad? I just think it's.
- 50:58Are you? Are you telling me Costas is the
- 51:00is the absolute answer for the foreseeable future?
- 51:04Well, they were trying to trade him.
- 51:05They were trying to. Send that's what I'm saying to
- 51:07Seattle. That's what I'm saying.
- 51:10Like the I'd, I'm not a believer.
- 51:11I I think, I just don't think he's that good.
- 51:15I think he's maybe he has some potential.
- 51:19I just don't think he's that good.
- 51:21He hasn't locked Devers hasn't locked any innings at third.
- 51:24At first you mean. All at first.
- 51:26Excuse me? Like I would, I would try that
- 51:28if, if, if my guy's so reluctant to be a full time DH, I would
- 51:33try that. I would try that first.
- 51:36It's going to be interesting though.
- 51:43They're going to, I think it some of these situations just
- 51:46kind of find a way of resolving themselves and whether it's an
- 51:51injury at some point that causes a shift in in the infield lineup
- 51:56or just trying to really cater to your superstar, I think
- 52:05something's going to give if this continues, if this struggle
- 52:10continues. A little more optimistic on the
- 52:15other side of the ball, Sandy Alcantara making his return to
- 52:20the bump looking looking pretty good.
- 52:24I think he got up to like, not he, he, he touched 99.
- 52:27I think he was sitting at 97 on average for, for his near 5
- 52:33innings of work. So that's encouraging to see if
- 52:38you're a Marlins fan. I mean, it's, it's, it's going
- 52:42to be a question of how long he's going to be there in Miami.
- 52:46But you know, for the time being, at least you're going to
- 52:49be able to enjoy some some starts of his.
- 52:53I think Skeens also also look pretty good.
- 52:56He was he was five and a third gave up two, but he had seven
- 53:00KS. So some some good takeaways from
- 53:06from the bump there on that side of the ball.
- 53:10Trying to think, like I said, there's a laundry list of things
- 53:13we could cover. Is there anything I'm missing?
- 53:18Again, a lot of stuff, but I feel like.
- 53:20That's I made a note, my one note.
- 53:23How sick was it that Cameron Meisner Misner of the Tampa Bay
- 53:34Rays getting his first career home run?
- 53:36Home run? As a walk off, that was cool.
- 53:39That's sick. That was really.
- 53:41Cool. That's real sick and I got to be
- 53:43honest, they look like a vibe there being.
- 53:48Yeah, dude, I was going to say the same side.
- 53:50Runner field like it. Looked.
- 53:52Like the crowd was into it. I'm not saying just that walk
- 53:56off like the game in general. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:58The capacity seems to be about right.
- 54:01You know what I mean? Yeah, that was a good, that was
- 54:04a good thought. I meant to get your thoughts on
- 54:08or like your takeaways from from the series.
- 54:10I've actually got it. They're playing right now
- 54:12wrapping up the series, but what are they wrapping it up today or
- 54:18tomorrow? Because I know they they started
- 54:22the day late. I don't know they.
- 54:23Started Friday, yeah. Yeah, but yeah, dude, it looked
- 54:29like, it looked like a vibe. And you know, credit to them.
- 54:32They the the reality of it is, is like this is this is your
- 54:37reality this season. And it seems like the players
- 54:41and the fans were, you know, they're buying into it like it's
- 54:44a, it's a sucky situation, but but the, the fact of the matter
- 54:50is, is like, if the best, if the best you can do is just show up,
- 54:57support, have a good time, then that's the best you can do.
- 55:01And I know it's opening weekend and, and maybe the, the high is
- 55:05only going to last for so long, but I'm right.
- 55:08I think you're right, dude. The, it, it looked like a vibe.
- 55:12It looked like a vibe. And they were talking around the
- 55:14broadcast like props to and I don't know what department
- 55:19specifically handles it, but like props to their
- 55:24organization, like getting getting all the signs up, like
- 55:27getting the Yankee stuff down and like getting their own stuff
- 55:30up and their and their different signs.
- 55:32Like I think they said that like when this announcement came out
- 55:36a few months ago, like their team was out there, like
- 55:38measuring, like where each sign would go to make sure that like
- 55:42it would feel very raised. Like I don't love it as a
- 55:48Yankees fan. I feel like it's like a bad juju
- 55:51kind of thing to like allow stuff to just be taken away and
- 55:56and replaced. But whatever, I mean it, it
- 55:59seems cool. Like as a baseball fan, like I
- 56:01can, I can see why it it's, it's a little different, a little
- 56:04neat for, for the race man. And like, why not?
- 56:08Like they they haven't had much to get excited about and and for
- 56:13a switch up to play outside in Florida and you're going to have
- 56:16your rain outs, but like to be outside and just like have that
- 56:20as an option is cool. Dude, they were talking, I don't
- 56:23know if you heard this, I got to they they were talking about on
- 56:32the broadcast that some insane amount of games for the Rays are
- 56:37going to be like the way their their schedule is structured
- 56:42this year to to accommodate for like the rainy season or
- 56:45whatever. I don't, I don't have the number
- 56:47in front of me and I'm trying to look it up, but they said it's
- 56:50got they're going to have some crazy amount of games on the
- 56:53road like later, later. That's how they have the.
- 56:56Season. They did that on purpose is to
- 56:58basically line it up with the rainy season, like understand,
- 57:01which is a good like good foresight of understanding that
- 57:04that just that's just a thing that's just going to happen.
- 57:09It's already a tough a tough pill to swallow, but like you
- 57:12said, it seems like they're making the best out of it.
- 57:15Yeah, like they're barely going to be on the road or they're
- 57:17barely going to be at home for like 2 months during the summer,
- 57:20like a 2 month span, which is just crazy.
- 57:23Wild to wild to think. But all that to say, I'm going
- 57:29to need, I'm going to need playoff baseball just for the
- 57:32just for like the, the wonkiness of it, for the beauty of
- 57:36baseball, for the, the storylines that the discussion
- 57:40or the conversation that's going to follow.
- 57:42Weird way of delivering this kind of stuff.
- 57:44I need I need post season baseball at Hart Steinbrenner
- 57:49Field. Really, really hard to imagine
- 57:52that these guys are going to like, I know us peasants, you
- 57:56know, or be like, oh, you get to live in in a comfy hotel bed,
- 57:59but like, that's a lot of travel.
- 58:01That's a lot of not being at home.
- 58:04That's a hard thing to do. These these guys talk about
- 58:07struggling to do it for a week straight.
- 58:09These guys are about to do it for two months.
- 58:11That's not easy. Did you say or did you did you
- 58:15see that guy chirping Stew the the owner from from like the
- 58:24lower bowl? I mean there's only really the
- 58:26lower bowl there, but like they get somebody was filming it.
- 58:29He was like he was he was looking back.
- 58:31Stu is standing there like it on it on one of the like little
- 58:34balcony suites there at the at the park and he was like so the
- 58:39team Stew and he pans and he looks over at Stu and Stu is
- 58:44like right there. I'm like he is literally on top
- 58:47of this guy just letting it eat at Stu.
- 58:50I thought that was hilarious but.
- 58:52That's. That's going to be the intimacy
- 58:54that they're talking about of this, of this spark.
- 58:57Also, if you're a betting man, I would hammer the over every
- 59:02game. Whatever, whatever the line is
- 59:05being played at that field. The ball just jumps, dude,
- 59:08doesn't it? It's already built to the same
- 59:10dimensions as the Yankee Stadium, so like, you're going
- 59:13to have a lot, a lot of offensive production there for
- 59:17both teams. I love it.
- 59:22Any other takeaways here? Jose Ramirez.
- 59:28I don't like that man. I don't like seeing.
- 59:30Wrist stuff, yeah, wrist brain not good.
- 59:33Imaging came back negative, which is encouraging, but you
- 59:36hate seeing stuff like that so early in the season.
- 59:40Did you by chance see the the the play that ended the Cubs D
- 59:43backs game? Yes.
- 59:46Crazy. Like yes, got some heads up ball
- 59:50by Dansby. I don't know if I've seen
- 59:51Dansby. I I could be late to.
- 59:53I don't know if I've seen that much emotion out of him before.
- 59:56That was that dude was. Outside of like outside of their
- 1:00:00their World Series run, Yeah. I mean, that's that's some some
- 1:00:04of that most emotion I've seen out of.
- 1:00:06Dancing, it's crazy, man. Like I one thing that bugs me
- 1:00:09this this period, like early in the season, I really, really
- 1:00:15don't like botched PF PS and I don't like bad base running
- 1:00:20because that's what you just came out of.
- 1:00:23You've spent weeks. Correct.
- 1:00:25Nailing that down, that bugs me dude.
- 1:00:29And for those unfamiliar, go back and look at the way the
- 1:00:32Cubs Diamondbacks game ended. It was wild.
- 1:00:34D backs are starting to make a run for it and kind of get back
- 1:00:37into the conversation late in the game.
- 1:00:39Ends up being bottom 9 and I who was that?
- 1:00:45I'm trying to think of who the base runner was.
- 1:00:48There's a new Diamondback, kind of a role player.
- 1:00:52Trying to find it? Hold on here.
- 1:00:54Over. It's like an infield squibber.
- 1:00:57Dansby becomes charging in hard. It's kind of this in between
- 1:01:00short and 3rd. So like third baseman's crashing
- 1:01:02too. Dansby gets it.
- 1:01:04No play at first because Corbin Carroll's running guy that was
- 1:01:08initially on 2nd over rounds third base and Dansby just runs
- 1:01:12at him and tags him out to end the game.
- 1:01:14Here you go. I got it.
- 1:01:15I got it. On a bounce, Swanson will pick
- 1:01:21it up, and now racing at Garrett Hanson, he's got him.
- 1:01:26What a play. Unbelievable crazy dude.
- 1:01:30With a heads up play and the Cubs finish it off.
- 1:01:35That's crazy and that's rough. Garrett Hampson role player be
- 1:01:40good at all of those types of things, correct?
- 1:01:42Be good at base running, got to be good at defense.
- 1:01:45That's the rule I. Love and I know it's opening
- 1:01:48weekend and again, it's a long year.
- 1:01:50There's going to be there's going to be peaks and valleys,
- 1:01:52but I love seeing the emotion like that right out of the gate.
- 1:01:57Like you just feed into what you're all the the adrenaline
- 1:02:00that you're already running off of this early in the season and
- 1:02:03you just feed into that and let it like fuel you to make heads
- 1:02:06up play. Well, I mean, we've already seen
- 1:02:09some base running issues. No, that's but that's easy.
- 1:02:12Channel. That's the right way.
- 1:02:12Heads up, shortstop playing right there, the pump fake look
- 1:02:16at the runner never works the one time out of 100 that it does
- 1:02:21and he takes advantage of it. Like that's huge, man.
- 1:02:24That was huge. When you have games where you
- 1:02:28feel like you stole it. I've jet watching that game was
- 1:02:32like the Cubs are going to lose this game.
- 1:02:34Ryan Presley did not look good, gave up a Jack, bases were
- 1:02:37loaded like heart of the order. All of that happening.
- 1:02:42I was like this game is going Diamondbacks way.
- 1:02:44They're going to have a walk off and that feels like the Cubs
- 1:02:46stole it so. And and look, not to not to feed
- 1:02:51into the whole like opening weekend overreaction narrative,
- 1:02:54but games like that. Teams like the Cubs, who are
- 1:02:59very clearly are very clear about their intentions of, of
- 1:03:04making a run at this thing this year with based on the way they
- 1:03:06handled their their personnel this offseason and their
- 1:03:10acquisitions that they made. Teams like the Cubs that are
- 1:03:13able to win games like this. Sure, it's just one game, but to
- 1:03:16do it against a a team that many people have making a deep run in
- 1:03:21the post season themselves in the D backs to be able to, like
- 1:03:25you said, go in and steal a win like that.
- 1:03:27If you can do that enough times over the course of a season and
- 1:03:31add to your win total with these games that you otherwise
- 1:03:35probably shouldn't be winning, that's how you get that edge.
- 1:03:39That's how you get that that slot higher up in the division.
- 1:03:44That's how you get the the higher seed in the wild card,
- 1:03:47more favorable match up, things like that is games like that.
- 1:03:50And I know it's opening weekend, but as early as opening weekend,
- 1:03:55you have to be taken advantage of games like that because it
- 1:03:57only can help you in October, September, October.
- 1:04:01They talked about in the Yankees broadcast yesterday, like
- 1:04:05stocking, like putting wins in the bank.
- 1:04:08It's like if you can steal wins because you're going to have a
- 1:04:11lull, you're going to have a valley during this season.
- 1:04:14And to get off to a hot start is so huge.
- 1:04:17And like to have that stacked up to where those those valleys
- 1:04:20don't hit you as hard. It's important, man.
- 1:04:24It's important. So go for the Cubs because that
- 1:04:27was a rough start to the season. It's a weird, unfortunate start.
- 1:04:30You lose 2 home games, Yeah, that aren't at home.
- 1:04:34You, you have this weird comeback, have more spring
- 1:04:36training like it's it's odd man. So good for them.
- 1:04:43I think that'll do it again, a lot of things have happened this
- 1:04:46weekend, but I feel like we covered a lot of the the main
- 1:04:49storylines here. I'm excited, dude.
- 1:04:53I'm I'm I'm back. You're back.
- 1:04:56I'm back, I'm back, We're back. We're just.
- 1:05:00We're back. We're back.

- 1:05:39And I'm just glad baseball's back, man.
- 1:05:43I love, I love flipping on my TV and they're being anywhere from
- 1:05:484:00 to a dozen games on TV. It is.
- 1:05:51It is beautiful. It's a wonderful sight, Yeah.
- 1:05:56For those who are new, we're going to do this twice a week
- 1:05:58all year. Barring anything crazy, it's
- 1:06:01going to be twice a week all year.
