- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie. And Samantha. And welcome to Stuff
- 0:08Speaker 1: I Never Told You, a production of iHeartRadio. And today
- 0:19Speaker 1: we are bringing back a classic fictional women around the
- 0:23Speaker 1: world on Reign Ocampo from Resident Evil. Probably obviously because
- 0:29Speaker 1: the new movies and theaters, but also I thought it
- 0:32Speaker 1: would be interesting to revisit this one because... There is
- 0:36Speaker 1: an AI villain at the heart of it that you're
- 0:42Speaker 1: not sure their intentions. But I think given all the
- 0:47Speaker 1: news that's happening right now, why not just throw this
- 0:51Speaker 1: one in? Good one. Yes. So please enjoy this classic episode. Hey,
- 1:02Speaker 1: this is Annie. And Samantha. And welcome to Stuff Mom
- 1:04Speaker 1: Never Told You, a production of iHeartRadio. And welcome to
- 1:16Speaker 1: another sub-sub-sub-sub-segment. Fictional women around the world. I'm excited about
- 1:22Speaker 1: this one, but I have to admit, this one's kind
- 1:25Speaker 1: of selfish. Because I really wanted to talk about Resident Evil.
- 1:30Speaker 1: we're still in our horror month times, even though we
- 1:34Speaker 1: talk about horror all the time. And I just, I
- 1:37Speaker 1: was thinking about Resident Evil. I really haven't talked about
- 1:40Speaker 1: it that much, except in our Women in Survival Horror
- 1:43Speaker 1: Video Games episode. I thought, you know what? It's time.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Let's do it. It's time. Have you ever seen it?
- 1:49Speaker 1: I know you haven't played the games, but have you
- 1:50Speaker 1: ever seen any of the movies? No. Okay. Just a
- 1:54Speaker 1: plain no. Is this the Mila? Yes. Okay. That part
- 1:59Speaker 1: I know. That's the end. That's fine. They're not very good.
- 2:04Speaker 1: No one would disagree with you. Okay. They're kind of
- 2:09Speaker 1: like one of the, you know, the long held belief
- 2:13Speaker 1: that there's never been a good video game adaption until recently.
- 2:18Speaker 1: These were a big part of that reason. There are
- 2:21Speaker 1: a lot of them, though, and they are successful, whether
- 2:24Speaker 1: they're good or not. So I have a long history
- 2:28Speaker 1: with Resident Evil. I played the first game when I
- 2:31Speaker 1: was nine or so, very young. And I snuck into
- 2:35Speaker 1: the first Resident Evil movie, like, literally through the back
- 2:38Speaker 1: door with me and my friends because it was rated
- 2:41Speaker 1: R and we weren't old enough. I have played these
- 2:44Speaker 1: games and seen these movies for a decade plus. I
- 2:48Speaker 1: have been in it. And the games are a phenomenon.
- 2:52Speaker 1: The first one came out in 1996. It was hard
- 2:55Speaker 1: as hell. The angle switches were unnerving. And it kind
- 3:01Speaker 1: of set the tone for a long time for how
- 3:04Speaker 1: horror games were. Because it was so... The way the
- 3:09Speaker 1: camera worked was very scary. You couldn't look ahead. It
- 3:13Speaker 1: wasn't in your control. And... Not only were they credited
- 3:19Speaker 1: with repopularizing the zombie genre, they, with Resident Evil 4,
- 3:24Speaker 1: which is a really good game that I have talked
- 3:26Speaker 1: about before, when that came out in 2005, it made
- 3:30Speaker 1: the over-the-shoulder shooter-style action game pretty standard. So some people
- 3:36Speaker 1: were like, this isn't a Resident Evil game, this is
- 3:37Speaker 1: an action game, but people love that game anyway. These
- 3:41Speaker 1: games try all kinds of things, some that work and
- 3:44Speaker 1: some that do not. This franchise is usually reported as
- 3:48Speaker 1: the best-selling horror game franchise ever. The first film came
- 3:53Speaker 1: out in 2002, so yes, I was very young and
- 3:56Speaker 1: I really should not have been there. But while it
- 3:59Speaker 1: is loosely based on the first and second game, the
- 4:03Speaker 1: writers specifically didn't follow the plot of any game because
- 4:07Speaker 1: they thought it would be scarier if none of us
- 4:09Speaker 1: knew what was going to happen. I would say your
- 4:13Speaker 1: mileage may vary on that. I disagree. I was like, no.
- 4:18Speaker 1: So if you don't know the very basic plot of
- 4:21Speaker 1: Resident Evil, it essentially boils down to an amoral slash
- 4:25Speaker 1: probably very evil corporation, the Umbrella Corporation, running secret experiments
- 4:30Speaker 1: resulting in what is called the T-virus that led to
- 4:33Speaker 1: the creation of zombies of all types. There's a lot
- 4:37Speaker 1: of corporate espionage, very strange, very strange individuals in power,
- 4:42Speaker 1: but also tales of people trying to cure cancer or
- 4:45Speaker 1: what have you. It's at the intersection of bioweapons and
- 4:49Speaker 1: potential cure. I believe that the Japanese game is called Biohazard.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And when it comes out, when it turns out it's
- 4:57Speaker 1: zombies that happened out of this whole thing, Umbrella Corp
- 5:02Speaker 1: tries to cover the whole thing up. So that's how
- 5:06Speaker 1: the movie kind of starts, is you realize something's very
- 5:10Speaker 1: wrong here and it gets out and you don't know
- 5:13Speaker 1: what's going on with Mila Jovovich's character, Alice, who's definitely
- 5:18Speaker 1: not in the games at all. Neither is the fictional
- 5:22Speaker 1: character of today, Rain Ocampo, played by Michelle Rodriguez. She
- 5:26Speaker 1: does not exist in the game. In the movie, the
- 5:30Speaker 1: main character, yes, Alice, can't remember anything that happened. But we,
- 5:33Speaker 1: as the audience, know she's involved because she was in
- 5:37Speaker 1: that opening scene where they were talking about the T-virus.
- 5:40Speaker 1: But the T-virus gets out and you've got the Raccoon
- 5:45Speaker 1: City RPD, which is where the early games largely take place,
- 5:49Speaker 1: Raccoon City. That's where Umbrella is headquartered. Coerce slash convince
- 5:53Speaker 1: Alice to go with them to investigate Umbrella's main building
- 5:56Speaker 1: and see what's going on here, what has gone wrong.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Turns out the building is infected with zombies and guarded
- 6:02Speaker 1: by an AI called the Red Queen. And she's a
- 6:05Speaker 1: little girl, a creepy little girl. You know, you got
- 6:06Speaker 1: to have one. Rain was a part of Umbrella's special
- 6:10Speaker 1: forces who was in on this mission. She was very
- 6:14Speaker 1: skilled in combat and marksmanship while she was close to
- 6:18Speaker 1: some of her team, JD especially, who perished. He perished
- 6:22Speaker 1: in front of her as she tries to help him.
- 6:25Speaker 1: She blamed team member Chad Kaplan for the deaths of
- 6:29Speaker 1: their team, and she said it was his lack of experience.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And why was he even here? This is ruining everything.
- 6:35Speaker 1: After their first encounter with the undead, who Rain thought
- 6:38Speaker 1: she thought it was a survivor and tried to help
- 6:41Speaker 1: at first, Rain was the one who got the headshot saying, quote,
- 6:45Speaker 1: she's not standing now. Of course, the undead rose again
- 6:58Speaker 1: and bit Rain for the second time. More of the
- 7:04Speaker 1: undead attacked her and her team, and she was bitten
- 7:06Speaker 1: several times. The Red Queen informs all the survivors what
- 7:11Speaker 1: this means, and Rain realizes she'll die. But she's like,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I'm going to keep fighting for this team until it's
- 7:17Speaker 1: the end. When the surviving members of the team are
- 7:21Speaker 1: on the verge of escaping, the Red Queen demands that
- 7:23Speaker 1: Alice kill Rain first. to contain the infection because while
- 7:27Speaker 1: they're close to retrieving the antivirus, Rain's infection has gone
- 7:31Speaker 1: on too long to be cured. Alice refuses and destroys
- 7:35Speaker 1: the screens the Red Queen was using to communicate with them. Eventually,
- 7:39Speaker 1: they get to the antivirus and Alice gives it to Rain,
- 7:42Speaker 1: but not before Rain makes Alice promise to kill her
- 7:44Speaker 1: if she turns. And for a moment, there's kind of
- 7:47Speaker 1: a funny moment where Alice is like, oh, here it is.
- 7:50Speaker 1: She's not responding. I have to kill her. And then
- 7:53Speaker 1: Rain is like, Still eyes closed. I'm not dead yet.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But then it turns out she has, in fact, died.
- 8:03Speaker 1: And she does turn into a zombie. Oh, no. Yes. Yes.
- 8:09Speaker 1: And all of this stuff happens at the same time.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So you've got a licker. that attacks and a licker
- 8:15Speaker 1: is basically these like really deadly zombies with huge tongues
- 8:19Speaker 1: that they use to like kill you. Very scary, don't
- 8:22Speaker 1: mess with them. And yeah, Rain, then you got Rain
- 8:26Speaker 1: who's like, hey, I'm a zombie now. One of the
- 8:29Speaker 1: survivors shoots her in the head with her own gun
- 8:32Speaker 1: and her body falls onto the button to open the
- 8:35Speaker 1: doors that then allows the rest of them and the
- 8:39Speaker 1: licker to escape. Alice is very, very depressed about Rain's death.
- 8:45Speaker 1: She really wanted to save her and they were kind
- 8:46Speaker 1: of begrudging buddies. The Umbrella Corporation later cloned Rain as
- 8:53Speaker 1: part of tests that they were running about how the
- 8:56Speaker 1: virus would spread depending on the conditions in order to
- 9:00Speaker 1: sell it to whoever was willing to pay the most.
- 9:03Speaker 1: The clones had no memories of Rain's life, and there
- 9:06Speaker 1: were two main clone Rains, the good one and the
- 9:11Speaker 1: bad one, obviously. The good one was all about gun
- 9:15Speaker 1: control and learning, and the bad one was very, very,
- 9:20Speaker 1: very blunt and worked as part of Umbrella's security. Good
- 9:23Speaker 1: Rain was killed by a licker, and bad Rain purposefully
- 9:27Speaker 1: infected herself with a parasite to make herself invulnerable. but
- 9:32Speaker 1: then was eaten by the undead, as it happens. This
- 9:37Speaker 1: character was the tough, skilled, no-nonsense one. Outwardly closed off,
- 9:42Speaker 1: but loyal. She liked to fight. She was ready to fight.
- 9:46Speaker 1: While she was hard to impress and often arrogant and violent,
- 9:49Speaker 1: she changed her mind about people if they inspired her to.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And despite working for Umbrella, when she found out what
- 9:54Speaker 1: they were capable of, she was horrified. And she stuck
- 9:58Speaker 1: out with me. I haven't seen this movie in forever.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I remember it very well though i don't know why
- 10:02Speaker 1: uh but i remember her character very well and you
- 10:07Speaker 1: know maybe one day i'll come back and do just
- 10:09Speaker 1: women in resident evil because there's a lot of good
- 10:14Speaker 1: ones but there's also a lot of like i know
- 10:15Speaker 1: i talked about jill valentine I mean, even Alice in
- 10:20Speaker 1: this movie, like the sexualized costumes they're wearing in a
- 10:23Speaker 1: zombie apocalypse. Like, I mean, I guess I can give
- 10:27Speaker 1: Alice a pass. Jill Valentine was kind of a cop, though.
- 10:30Speaker 1: But I don't know. But you get introduced to Jill
- 10:35Speaker 1: Valentine in the next movie. And that's when you meet Nemesis.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And Nemesis is one of the scariest villains of all time,
- 10:42Speaker 1: in my opinion. Not necessarily in the movie. But in
- 10:45Speaker 1: the game, very scary. If you hear his theme music
- 10:49Speaker 1: on and you know he's around, I would just leave.
- 10:51Speaker 1: I would just go back out the door I just
- 10:53Speaker 1: came in. Yes, yes. Well, thank you for letting me.
- 11:01Speaker 1: This was fun to revisit. I haven't thought about Resident
- 11:03Speaker 1: Evil in a while. Are you going to watch it
- 11:05Speaker 1: again now? It might be on my Halloween list because
- 11:11Speaker 1: I haven't seen it in a while and I'm pretty
- 11:12Speaker 1: sure it's streaming. So I would love to rewatch it.
- 11:16Speaker 1: It's not very good. If anybody's listening to this, I'm
- 11:19Speaker 1: just going to tell you it's fun, but don't expect
- 11:22Speaker 1: more than fun. You don't think it's going to be
- 11:24Speaker 1: a life-changing movie? No. None of them are. Back when
- 11:30Speaker 1: I was in college, they used to have this student deal,
- 11:32Speaker 1: you know, and you could go see a movie for $ 2.
- 11:34Speaker 1: So I saw a lot of movies that I never
- 11:37Speaker 1: would have seen if it cost any more than that.
- 11:38Speaker 1: So I saw a lot of the Resident Evil movies
- 11:41Speaker 1: because of that price. Amazing. And there's a lot of
- 11:43Speaker 1: bad 3D also happens, I will say. Of course. Of course.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And a lot of cloning. A lot of cloning. But anyway, yes, listeners,
- 11:53Speaker 1: I would love to hear from you if you have
- 11:55Speaker 1: any thoughts about this, any suggestions for characters we should
- 12:00Speaker 1: tackle in this franchise. Please let us know. You can
