- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio. Her Mart Welcome to another hour of NFL Now.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Loading up with Steve Yshawn, Patrick Clayvon here in the
- 0:22Speaker 1: NFL LA newsroom. As We've got a lot of news
- 0:24Speaker 1: and this next segment of the offseason, Yeah, parts a
- 0:28Speaker 1: lot of it. Is this just the combine, just dovetails,
- 0:30Speaker 1: the franchise tags, free agency, it's no offseason, Patrick, you
- 0:34Speaker 1: may be wondering, well, what big news do you guys
- 0:36Speaker 1: have today? Well, as of this morning, per our NFL
- 0:40Speaker 1: Network insiders Ian Rappaport, Mike Garifolo, and Tom Pella Sero,
- 0:43Speaker 1: the Saints agreeing to a deal with free agent quarterback
- 0:47Speaker 1: Derek Carley could be worth up to one hundred and
- 0:50Speaker 1: fifty million dollars, comes with sixty million dollars guaranteed at signing,
- 0:55Speaker 1: as well as the much coveted no trade clause. He
- 0:58Speaker 1: had one meeting before the release from the Raiders, and
- 1:03Speaker 1: then another set of meetings after that. And now Derek
- 1:06Speaker 1: carr is going to be a New Orleans Saint for
- 1:09Speaker 1: the foreseeable future. Joining us now, our our insiders Tom Pillicero,
- 1:13Speaker 1: Ian Rappaport and Mike Garrofolo. Let's start with Derek Carr. Mike,
- 1:19Speaker 1: what can you tell us about this deal and how
- 1:20Speaker 1: and how it played out? Now, let's start back from
- 1:23Speaker 1: when Derek Carr was with the Las Vegas Raiders. We
- 1:26Speaker 1: knew his time was coming to an end there, but
- 1:28Speaker 1: they still held his contractual rights. Well, they allowed him
- 1:31Speaker 1: to visit one team. It was the New Orleans Saints.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Derek Carr then told the Raiders, I am not agreeing
- 1:36Speaker 1: to any trade, and everybody said, well, must not have
- 1:39Speaker 1: been a great visit with the Saints, and we told
- 1:41Speaker 1: you no, it was. It was just more about he
- 1:43Speaker 1: wanted to have full control over his future and free agency.
- 1:47Speaker 1: He got that the Saints were still involved. They were
- 1:49Speaker 1: one of three teams he met with last week. It
- 1:51Speaker 1: was in Indianapolis at the scouting combine. It was the
- 1:54Speaker 1: Saints and the Jets and the Panthers. Never really got
- 1:57Speaker 1: since the Panthers were a legit possible destination, it seemed
- 2:01Speaker 1: like it was always going to be the Saints and
- 2:02Speaker 1: the Jets, and the Jets were in it until the
- 2:05Speaker 1: end on Derek Carr, but in the end he decided
- 2:07Speaker 1: to go with the Saints. I think I know some
- 2:10Speaker 1: of the factors that play being in the NFC, playing
- 2:13Speaker 1: in a dome, and also a division in the NFC
- 2:17Speaker 1: South that is very much unsettled, including the fact that
- 2:21Speaker 1: he's really the only starting quarterback that's locked in in
- 2:24Speaker 1: the entire division right now. So certainly a path for
- 2:27Speaker 1: Derek Carr and the Saints to compete. Ian Rappaport's gonna
- 2:30Speaker 1: follow me now with the numbers. I'll give you this
- 2:32Speaker 1: one nugget on the contract. He's got a no trade clause,
- 2:34Speaker 1: same thing he had with the Raiders that allowed him
- 2:36Speaker 1: to control his future and land with the Saints. Yeah,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and the hope is that is something that is not
- 2:42Speaker 1: necessary for Derek Carr. You're right, the Saints have really
- 2:44Speaker 1: been the leader throughout the only team that tried to
- 2:47Speaker 1: trade for him, and really a perfect situation, perfect team,
- 2:51Speaker 1: a coach he knows, perfect city. Derek Carr is gonna
- 2:54Speaker 1: love it there and he's gonna get paid quite handsomely.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Here are the details on the contract. It is a
- 2:59Speaker 1: four year deal worth one hundred and fifty million dollars
- 3:03Speaker 1: that includes one hundred million dollars in total guarantees, but
- 3:06Speaker 1: the breakdown is important, and of course for Carr, working
- 3:10Speaker 1: on a contract that fit in the constraints of the
- 3:12Speaker 1: Saints cap situation were certainly something that was important and
- 3:15Speaker 1: I would say necessary. He gets sixty million dollars fully
- 3:19Speaker 1: guaranteed at signing. That spread out over the first two years,
- 3:22Speaker 1: so no matter what he makes, sixty million dollars. There's
- 3:25Speaker 1: an additional ten million dollars in year three, but that
- 3:29Speaker 1: vests early, that vest after year one, So making it
- 3:32Speaker 1: through year one means that he gets in all seventy
- 3:36Speaker 1: million dollars fully guaranteed. That is the price for a
- 3:39Speaker 1: starting quarterback, and that is now the price for Derek Carr.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Is the top free agent available lands in New Orleans,
- 3:47Speaker 1: so he and where does that leave the other teams
- 3:49Speaker 1: that we're looking at Derek Carr? Whereas that leave the
- 3:51Speaker 1: quarterback market in general? Well, of course, the New York
- 3:54Speaker 1: Jets had very good meetings with Derek Carr. That was
- 3:56Speaker 1: an option for both sides had things played out a
- 4:00Speaker 1: little bit differently. Before Derek Carr ended up signing with
- 4:02Speaker 1: the New Orleans Saints, the Jets have been wanting to
- 4:06Speaker 1: wait here for, among others, Aaron Rodgers, to see exactly
- 4:09Speaker 1: what plays out with the Packers quarterback who if he
- 4:12Speaker 1: comes to Green Bay and says that he wants to
- 4:15Speaker 1: be traded, then the Packers would work with Rogers on that.
- 4:19Speaker 1: As for the Panthers, they really they talked to Derek Carr,
- 4:22Speaker 1: they were going to talk to him again by phone
- 4:24Speaker 1: this week, and it never really seemed like that was
- 4:26Speaker 1: at the forefront. They of course have made deals in
- 4:28Speaker 1: the past for Sam Darnold and for Baker Mayfield. I
- 4:31Speaker 1: would anticipate that they are going to be judicious, They're
- 4:34Speaker 1: going to be deliberate in terms of how they move
- 4:36Speaker 1: forward through this offseason, especially when you look around in
- 4:39Speaker 1: what happens with Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, could he potentially
- 4:42Speaker 1: be available depending on the tag and whether the Ravens
- 4:44Speaker 1: end up looking to move him, What happens with Jimmy
- 4:47Speaker 1: Garoppolo in free agency. A whole lot of moving parts
- 4:50Speaker 1: and they're all very much interconnected as this thing moves forward. Patrick, Yeah,
- 4:53Speaker 1: find out what happens with all these quarterbacks on the
- 4:55Speaker 1: next exciting episode of The Insiders. Thanks to Tom Delasaro
- 4:58Speaker 1: in Rappaport and Mike Garofolo will be back with you,
- 5:01Speaker 1: gentlemen in just a few moments. But let's break down
- 5:04Speaker 1: here in the NFL Los Angeles news rooms, he had
- 5:06Speaker 1: customarily grabs his telephone Hello to wherever he was talking
- 5:10Speaker 1: to Ian looking at this coming in, which is what
- 5:14Speaker 1: is new right now? The Saints offense, the projected starters
- 5:18Speaker 1: for twenty twenty three still got some work to do
- 5:21Speaker 1: with regards to Michael Thomas and Jarvis Slandry, but Derek
- 5:25Speaker 1: Carr now in the fold, as well as Alvin Kamara.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Great finish to the season from Jawan Johnson and Chris
- 5:29Speaker 1: Olavey had a spectacular rookie years. Steve, But what does
- 5:32Speaker 1: Derek Carr do for this team and for this offense? Well, look,
- 5:35Speaker 1: he brings you know, the veteran mentality, a proven player,
- 5:38Speaker 1: you know what he is, right, So the Saints figure
- 5:40Speaker 1: he's the perfect fit for their offense. But also knowing
- 5:44Speaker 1: Derek and his personality, he's a perfect fit for that
- 5:47Speaker 1: locker room. This is an established, winning caliber locker room
- 5:51Speaker 1: that is defensive heavy on the top end. In terms
- 5:54Speaker 1: of the personality and the strength of this team, Cam
- 5:57Speaker 1: Jordan to Mario O'Davis, Marshawn Lattimore, players like that. Derek
- 6:01Speaker 1: Carr has never had a defense like this. He has
- 6:03Speaker 1: a defense. It's gonna get him the ball, gonna get
- 6:04Speaker 1: him a extra possession or to a game, going to
- 6:06Speaker 1: give him shorter fields and also keep the score down. Now,
- 6:10Speaker 1: if he has a healthy Michael Thomas, a player we
- 6:13Speaker 1: really haven't seen much over the past formby years, to
- 6:15Speaker 1: go with some of the other weapons, including a solid
- 6:18Speaker 1: and evolving offensive line. Look, the Saints could be back
- 6:23Speaker 1: in the mix now. We see in the NFC South
- 6:25Speaker 1: everything is wide open. Is no team is really stable
- 6:27Speaker 1: at quarterback right now, So they've got an opportunity to
- 6:30Speaker 1: get there and we'll see how that goes against the
- 6:32Speaker 1: rest of the NFC. But again, some of the options
- 6:35Speaker 1: that Derek Carr has and the way he fits in
- 6:38Speaker 1: to that clubhouse, and knowing that clubhouse pretty well on
- 6:41Speaker 1: the personalities there, this is a perfect fit. For the
- 6:44Speaker 1: first time he took a visit there, I thought this
- 6:45Speaker 1: was a leader of the pack. So again I'm not
- 6:48Speaker 1: sitting here proclaiming greatness for the Saints right now. We'll
- 6:50Speaker 1: see how that emerges. But for the landing spots he
- 6:53Speaker 1: went to the Jets in Carolina, this seems like the
- 6:56Speaker 1: smartest fit for the reasons I just mentioned, Yeah, go
- 6:58Speaker 1: ahead and make the move now for both car and
- 7:00Speaker 1: for the Saints to make this union work, and we'll
- 7:03Speaker 1: see Howard improves and Jamie Winch it's probably going to
- 7:06Speaker 1: get let go too, as they tried to get CAP
- 7:07Speaker 1: compliant as a Saint A still over the CAP as
- 7:09Speaker 1: of right now, still some work to be done there.
- 7:11Speaker 1: So that is Derek Carr's move to New Orleans. More
- 7:15Speaker 1: to come on that as we continue to show. But
- 7:17Speaker 1: let's get to what is new right now. Coming into
- 7:19Speaker 1: the nfl LA newsroom. Ian Rappaport others reporting the NFL
- 7:25Speaker 1: reinstating Jags wide receiver Calvin Ridley. This coming from the
- 7:30Speaker 1: suspension that stemmed from a gambling incident at a betting
- 7:34Speaker 1: incident a couple of years ago. Now traded to the
- 7:37Speaker 1: Jaguars and Reet and stated, Ian, what can you tell
- 7:40Speaker 1: us about this process? And was that what you were
- 7:42Speaker 1: on the phone about earlier? That was what I was
- 7:46Speaker 1: on the phone about earlier. As a matter of fact,
- 7:47Speaker 1: it just got announced the Jacksonville Jaguars have gotten so
- 7:51Speaker 1: many they believed to be one of their star receivers
- 7:53Speaker 1: back for the first time for the twenty twenty three season.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I remember this was a trade that happened around the
- 7:58Speaker 1: time of the trade deadline. The former Atlanta Falcons star
- 8:02Speaker 1: receiver had been suspended indefinitely gambling had been suspended indefinitely
- 8:07Speaker 1: for gambling from his phone fifteen hundred dollars. It was him,
- 8:11Speaker 1: he did not deny. It also was very clear that
- 8:13Speaker 1: this is something that was a one time thing for
- 8:15Speaker 1: Ridley was suspended a year and during that time was
- 8:19Speaker 1: moved to Jacksonville for a fresh start that I think
- 8:22Speaker 1: both sides expected and needed. Now Ridley, who really followed
- 8:26Speaker 1: everything the NFL needed him to do a last month,
- 8:30Speaker 1: officially applied for reinstatement. Now has been reinstated, so making
- 8:34Speaker 1: good on the Jaguars trade from several months ago and
- 8:36Speaker 1: giving them one of the top young receivers in the NFL.
- 8:39Speaker 1: And there are some in sentives that he can hit
- 8:40Speaker 1: the change the schematics of that trade. Something to look
- 8:43Speaker 1: forward to and the twenty twenty three season. We're also
- 8:46Speaker 1: looking forward to the franchise tag deadline coming up tomorrow
- 8:50Speaker 1: at four pm Eastern. Tom Willkana tell us about Tony
- 8:52Speaker 1: Pollard and the Dallas Cowboys Patrick. As expected, the Cowboys
- 8:59Speaker 1: officially filed the paperwork to franchise tag Tony Pollard today
- 9:03Speaker 1: That locks in base salary of a little over ten
- 9:06Speaker 1: million dollars from Pollard in twenty twenty three if the
- 9:09Speaker 1: sides cannot do what the Cowboys would still like to do,
- 9:12Speaker 1: which is work out a multiyear deal with Pollard prior
- 9:16Speaker 1: to the July fifteenth deadline. Now where does all this
- 9:19Speaker 1: leave Ezekiel Elliott? My understanding is the Cowboys do want
- 9:23Speaker 1: him back. It's just not going to be at the
- 9:25Speaker 1: ten point nine million dollars that Zeke is due in
- 9:29Speaker 1: twenty twenty three. So we will see whether there's a
- 9:31Speaker 1: path forward here for him to play at a reduced number.
- 9:35Speaker 1: There's ony Cowboys team, of course, that's going through transition.
- 9:37Speaker 1: With Mike McCarthy now taking over as the play caller
- 9:40Speaker 1: for Kellen Moore. A lot was made of some comments
- 9:42Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy made earlier this week about his approach to
- 9:45Speaker 1: offense versus Kellen Moore's. Mike McCarthy was actually a very
- 9:48Speaker 1: complimentary throughout that interview about Kellen Moore. But the facts
- 9:51Speaker 1: of the facts, the rushing numbers have gone up every
- 9:54Speaker 1: year from two sixty two and twenty twenty to three
- 9:56Speaker 1: or eight in twenty twenty one, three eighty one in
- 9:59Speaker 1: twenty twenty two. Zeke and Pollard have both been a
- 10:02Speaker 1: big part of that, so it makes sense to try
- 10:05Speaker 1: they can find a path forward to keep those two together. Tom,
- 10:07Speaker 1: are you saying there might have been some overreactions regarding
- 10:09Speaker 1: the Dallas Cowboys and statements made. This is very interesting
- 10:14Speaker 1: that this would happen with that. Turns out when you
- 10:16Speaker 1: take a very long quote and then shorten it and
- 10:18Speaker 1: shorten it some more to fit into a topic bar
- 10:20Speaker 1: some of the contexts can get lost. That that happens
- 10:23Speaker 1: sometimes contexts very very important, very important. Is context also important? Health?
- 10:29Speaker 1: And we saw brock Purty Mike finished the NFC Championship
- 10:32Speaker 1: game essentially not able to throw the ball. There was
- 10:35Speaker 1: some swelling. What's the update on his surgery? Brock Purty
- 10:39Speaker 1: scheduled for surgery on Friday. I say schedule because until
- 10:43Speaker 1: it's actually performed, we don't know if it's going to
- 10:46Speaker 1: be performed. As Tom Pellicero reported recently, he had inflammation
- 10:50Speaker 1: in his elbow, causing them to postpone the surgery last month,
- 10:53Speaker 1: but everything seems to be on track for now for
- 10:56Speaker 1: Purdy to undergo that procedure on Friday. The expectation is
- 10:59Speaker 1: it's still going to be that internal brace with a
- 11:01Speaker 1: UCL repair. I know a lot of people thought, oh,
- 11:04Speaker 1: Tommy John UCL still not likely to be Tommy John surgery.
- 11:08Speaker 1: But again, we won't know until that surgery is performed,
- 11:10Speaker 1: and unless that surgery is performed. But as of right now,
- 11:13Speaker 1: it is slated for Friday. Now, you start to do
- 11:15Speaker 1: the math and you say six month recovery, and again,
- 11:18Speaker 1: six month recovery means fully recovered. He'll start throwing at
- 11:22Speaker 1: three months if that's the case, But it puts him
- 11:24Speaker 1: into September, and it makes the start of the season.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Murky John Lynch the Niners GM admitting, yeah, we may
- 11:29Speaker 1: have to dip into the veteran free agent quarterback market
- 11:33Speaker 1: Matt Ryan, who has a connection with Kyle Shanahan. Possibly
- 11:36Speaker 1: that could be a match for them while they wait
- 11:38Speaker 1: for Party to recover. But the one thing consistently that
- 11:41Speaker 1: we heard throughout our time in Indianapolis was how much
- 11:44Speaker 1: the forty nine ers love Brock Party. They really think
- 11:47Speaker 1: they've got themselves a good one in Party. We'll see
- 11:50Speaker 1: what that means for Trey Lance. Yeah, another quarterback on
- 11:53Speaker 1: that rookie deals. Speaking of rookie deals coming to a close, Eam,
- 11:56Speaker 1: let's talk about Daniel Jones and the work to get
- 11:58Speaker 1: him a long term deal. What can you tell us there?
- 12:02Speaker 1: Twenty six hours I believe remain until the franchise tag deadline.
- 12:06Speaker 1: The Giants and the agents and athletes first year now
- 12:08Speaker 1: represent Daniel Jones are still working on a deal. By
- 12:11Speaker 1: the time they lift Indianapolis yesterday, there was at least
- 12:14Speaker 1: a glimmer of hope, a glimmer of optimism that a
- 12:17Speaker 1: deal still could potentially get done. My colleague Mike garafol
- 12:21Speaker 1: over there mention a potential visit from Jones's agents to
- 12:25Speaker 1: the Giants that would take place today to continue working
- 12:28Speaker 1: on a deal. There is nothing yet. I do not
- 12:30Speaker 1: sense anything imminent right now, but the fact that they
- 12:32Speaker 1: were at least still talking means that a deal is
- 12:36Speaker 1: still possible. If they cannot get a deal, obviously Jones
- 12:38Speaker 1: will be franchise tagged and at that point se Quon
- 12:41Speaker 1: Barkley would hit the market. The hope is that none
- 12:43Speaker 1: of that happens. The hope is that they get a deal,
- 12:45Speaker 1: but obviously they are not there yet. I would not
- 12:48Speaker 1: say it's a similar situation for Lamar Jackson the Baltimore Ravens.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I mean, obviously Lamar is gonna get tagged. That is
- 12:53Speaker 1: expected to happen tomorrow, But it just doesn't feel like
- 12:57Speaker 1: there's been engagement from Lamar Jackson doing a deal. The
- 13:00Speaker 1: Ravens have made an offer, they have been out, as
- 13:02Speaker 1: Eric de Costa discussed this week, to visit with Lamar,
- 13:05Speaker 1: talk to him face to face, try to get something done.
- 13:07Speaker 1: It does not sound like that has been reciprocated, so
- 13:10Speaker 1: expected to be tagged there for Jackson. All right, more
- 13:13Speaker 1: news to come on these quarterbacks in all of these situations.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Thanks to the the NFL Network insiders Ian Rappaport, Tom Pellicero,
- 13:19Speaker 1: and Mike Garo follow the latest all around the NFL,
- 13:23Speaker 1: we got more news the Rams granting Alan Robinson permission
- 13:27Speaker 1: to seek a trade, still two years removed from his
- 13:30Speaker 1: third career one thousand yards season, turns thirty in August.
- 13:34Speaker 1: That news coming from US courtesy of Tom Pellacero. And
- 13:38Speaker 1: also big change coming up in Minnesota the Vikings releasing
- 13:44Speaker 1: Eric Kendricks, who just turned thirty one last week starting
- 13:47Speaker 1: linebacker Minnesota for most of his eight year career, the
- 13:50Speaker 1: leading tackler in Minnesota in seven of his eight career seasons. Also,
- 13:57Speaker 1: the Titans expecting to release Bud Duprie, according to the
- 14:01Speaker 1: NFL Network insider Ian Rappaport, citing sources familiar with the situation,
- 14:05Speaker 1: do seventeen million this season, and perhaps there's even more
- 14:08Speaker 1: tonover on the way as another veteran pass rusher hits
- 14:13Speaker 1: the market. Anthony Richardson performs spectacularly on the field, how
- 14:18Speaker 1: did they perform on the whiteboard with our coach Steve Mariuchi.
- 14:21Speaker 1: That's coming up right here on NFL Now. We're back
- 14:37Speaker 1: on NFL Now, and after sixteen hundred and fifty three
- 14:40Speaker 1: rushing yards ninety seven yards per game, the Raiders planning
- 14:45Speaker 1: to use a franchise tag on Jock Jacobs if they're
- 14:48Speaker 1: not able to get a deal reached by four pm Eastern,
- 14:51Speaker 1: coming up that franchise tag deadline tomorrow. So the future
- 14:57Speaker 1: in limbo for that particular Las Vegas raider James Palmer
- 15:00Speaker 1: back with us now, and he looks to be the
- 15:03Speaker 1: guy that they are going to use that franchise tag on. James.
- 15:07Speaker 1: You spoke to Dave Ziggler at the combine. What did
- 15:09Speaker 1: he tell you? What's interesting with Josh Jacobs Patrick and
- 15:13Speaker 1: how it's operating in the backfield is remember when Dave
- 15:16Speaker 1: Ziggler and Josh mcchaniels came to town, didn't pick up
- 15:18Speaker 1: the fifth year option, and now they hit him with
- 15:20Speaker 1: the franchise tag because they'd like him to be their
- 15:22Speaker 1: long term after he goes and he wasn't offended by
- 15:25Speaker 1: them not picking up the fifth year option and goes
- 15:27Speaker 1: and leads the NFL and rushing leads the NFL and
- 15:29Speaker 1: scrimmage yards. Now both sides are talking, they're having their negotiations. Now.
- 15:33Speaker 1: They don't really know how long this is going to take.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Could be a quick negotiation, could take some time, but
- 15:38Speaker 1: they do feel like they're on a good starting off
- 15:39Speaker 1: point considering everybody feels like they want a long term
- 15:43Speaker 1: deal to be done. All sides obviously in agreement in
- 15:46Speaker 1: that sense. Now who's in that backfield with him is
- 15:48Speaker 1: going to be the interesting aspect in terms of what
- 15:50Speaker 1: do the Raiders do at the quarterback position as well,
- 15:54Speaker 1: because when you look at where they stand, they have
- 15:57Speaker 1: to decide quickly in terms of the avenue that they
- 16:00Speaker 1: want to pursue. Is it going to be an expensive
- 16:02Speaker 1: free agent that they want to come in because free
- 16:03Speaker 1: agencies around the corner, or do they want to use
- 16:05Speaker 1: that number seven pick that they have in the draft
- 16:08Speaker 1: on the future of their franchise or potentially they met
- 16:10Speaker 1: with all the quarterbacks at the draft, I mean at
- 16:13Speaker 1: the combine that they want to maybe possibly move up
- 16:15Speaker 1: for a quarterback. But what they do know is they
- 16:17Speaker 1: could use somebody like Jared Stidham, who was in there
- 16:20Speaker 1: after Derek Carr at the end of the season, to
- 16:23Speaker 1: be that guy. They've had some negotiations with him. He
- 16:25Speaker 1: knows the system to where they could even if they
- 16:27Speaker 1: look at the quarterback they get in and it is
- 16:29Speaker 1: in the draft Patrick that they could sit him for
- 16:31Speaker 1: a season. But they do feel like they have to
- 16:33Speaker 1: be an alignment from Mark Davis all the way down
- 16:36Speaker 1: from Ziegler to Josh McDaniels and how they approach this.
- 16:39Speaker 1: But they need to pick their approach rather quickly. Now
- 16:42Speaker 1: let's go elsewhere in the divisions. Of course, James, you're
- 16:45Speaker 1: close to the Denver Broncos. How is Sean Payton approaching
- 16:49Speaker 1: his first season as the head coach in Denver. It's
- 16:52Speaker 1: been an interesting time talking to a lot of coaches
- 16:54Speaker 1: that are on that staff in the short period of
- 16:56Speaker 1: time that they've been with Sean Payton, but talking to
- 16:58Speaker 1: them at the combine, they believe this is completely different
- 17:01Speaker 1: set of meetings than some of them were going through
- 17:02Speaker 1: last year in Denver in terms of the attention to detail,
- 17:05Speaker 1: in terms of the intensity that Sean Payton brings, and
- 17:08Speaker 1: talking to a lot of them, there's just a sense
- 17:10Speaker 1: they say that we're going to turn this thing around
- 17:12Speaker 1: sooner rather than later. And that is actually the sense
- 17:14Speaker 1: talking to other people in the AFC West from other
- 17:17Speaker 1: teams that they think when they look at what Russell
- 17:19Speaker 1: Wilson did at the end of the season, kind of
- 17:21Speaker 1: turning the corner a little bit in their minds. Now,
- 17:23Speaker 1: the interesting part about this is John Payton is not
- 17:26Speaker 1: really revealing anything in terms of what he wants to
- 17:29Speaker 1: do with Russell Wilson. He's keating, playing those cards somewhat
- 17:32Speaker 1: close to his vest, But they do believe they're going
- 17:34Speaker 1: to be healthier around him. With their star running back
- 17:36Speaker 1: Jamante Williams with a big knee injury last year, they're
- 17:39Speaker 1: hoping he's going to be ready for the start of
- 17:41Speaker 1: the season their number two wide receiver and Tim Patrick
- 17:44Speaker 1: suffering NaCl in camp last year. He is going to
- 17:46Speaker 1: be one hundred percent by the start of the season,
- 17:48Speaker 1: as well as their left tackle Garrett Bolls. They played
- 17:50Speaker 1: most of the season without. All of those things do
- 17:52Speaker 1: help them in terms of turning things around with Russell Wilson.
- 17:55Speaker 1: One note in terms of the more immediate future in
- 17:57Speaker 1: that roster Draymont Jones, their defensive tackle who led them
- 18:01Speaker 1: in sacks and tackle for losses. They've been going back
- 18:04Speaker 1: and forth trying to negotiate things. As of right now,
- 18:07Speaker 1: where it stands, they are not going to hit him
- 18:09Speaker 1: with the franchise tag again. That could change between now
- 18:12Speaker 1: and four o'clock tomorrow, But he was the big free
- 18:14Speaker 1: agent everybody in Denver's keeping their eye on. He could
- 18:17Speaker 1: be potentially testing the free agent market. Yeah, one of
- 18:19Speaker 1: the biggest parts of the defense that was at the
- 18:21Speaker 1: start of the season the best defense in the NFL.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Things sort of gave way late as the offense continued
- 18:27Speaker 1: their struggles. James Palmer with the latest on the Denver
- 18:30Speaker 1: Broncos as well as looking at the Las Vegas Writers
- 18:33Speaker 1: let's look back to Indianapolis where CJ. Stroud didn't participate
- 18:37Speaker 1: in the athletic testing, but he went out on the
- 18:40Speaker 1: field and spun the rock, throwing very well. We heard
- 18:44Speaker 1: from Lancerline breaking down his throwing performance earlier earlier on NFL.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Now in the reaction from Daniel Jeremiah from Up in
- 18:51Speaker 1: the Boots saying that CJ. Stroud was having one of
- 18:53Speaker 1: the best throwing sessions he's ever seen at the combine,
- 18:57Speaker 1: and Stroud doing that in competition with Richardson as well,
- 19:01Speaker 1: Philip Doorset saying those guys were out there throws. So
- 19:06Speaker 1: let's bring in Steve Wison Brian Baldinger talk about the
- 19:09Speaker 1: performances from both of these quarterbacks and the different ways
- 19:12Speaker 1: that they approached the game. Who helped themselves more? Baldi?
- 19:15Speaker 1: Was CJ. Stroud or was it a R fifteen? If
- 19:18Speaker 1: the question patrickers who helped themselves more? My answer is
- 19:20Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson. What CJ. Stroud did was he confirmed what
- 19:24Speaker 1: we saw at Ohio State the last two years. He
- 19:27Speaker 1: did it without the pass. But when we saw Anthony Richardson,
- 19:30Speaker 1: I think we all thought he would test well. I
- 19:32Speaker 1: don't think anybody thought he was gonna do what he did.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I don't think anybody thought he was gonna be two
- 19:36Speaker 1: hundred forty four pounds. It was gonna come in, run
- 19:38Speaker 1: like he did, and then throw it like he did,
- 19:41Speaker 1: especially the deep ball where I saw him complete three
- 19:43Speaker 1: straight passes of sixty plus yards and he made it
- 19:46Speaker 1: look really easy, and he looked like he was having
- 19:49Speaker 1: more fun out there than anybody. And I think there
- 19:52Speaker 1: was a whole lot of people that thought, you know,
- 19:54Speaker 1: he's gonna be a talented guy, but he's not going
- 19:57Speaker 1: to be an NFL quarterback. He's never gonna be active enough.
- 19:59Speaker 1: I saw the same questions about Josh Allen four years ago,
- 20:03Speaker 1: to combine when he was coming out of Wyoming. Fifty
- 20:06Speaker 1: six percent completion quarterback, not accurate enough, can't do it
- 20:09Speaker 1: in the NFL. And we've seen what Josh Allen has become.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I think, you know, Jalen Hurts. We've seen guys now
- 20:15Speaker 1: really stepped their NFL games up from their college games.
- 20:18Speaker 1: And I feel like there's people out there that believe
- 20:21Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson can do that. Oh well. I mean, you know,
- 20:23Speaker 1: they say his ceiling is limitless. I mean, that's the
- 20:26Speaker 1: whole thing your drafting a player base in only thirteen starts.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Where it did help himself was to touch. Everyone knows
- 20:31Speaker 1: he just he guns it with the touch he showed.
- 20:33Speaker 1: But I'm gonna say C J. Stroud, and you talk
- 20:34Speaker 1: about Stroud kind of confirmed everything that you know that
- 20:37Speaker 1: you saw. Yes, of course that's what he did. But Baldi,
- 20:41Speaker 1: first off, how many of these elite quarterbacks you know
- 20:43Speaker 1: we're going top five actually throw at this ye? Right,
- 20:45Speaker 1: so he shows up. Then a lot of music excuse
- 20:48Speaker 1: though I didn't throw great because I'm throwing the receivers
- 20:50Speaker 1: and I'm not used to get going. He was money
- 20:53Speaker 1: in the bank. He was so clean with everything he did,
- 20:56Speaker 1: all of this testing, all of his throws were just
- 20:59Speaker 1: absolutely fantastic. There were no excuses there. So I think
- 21:03Speaker 1: he helped himself from eyes of his valuators. And again
- 21:06Speaker 1: we're talking about this little twenty four hour runway of
- 21:08Speaker 1: memory we have here because he stood up and he competed.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Right now, people can go back and look at the tape.
- 21:14Speaker 1: They're going to look at his big games where he
- 21:15Speaker 1: stood at the competed. Of course, a Georgia game comes
- 21:18Speaker 1: to mind where he was just so good, so again,
- 21:21Speaker 1: both quarterbacks absolutely helped themselves. And again Richardson, a lot
- 21:25Speaker 1: of people hadn't seen him where they saw Shroud a
- 21:26Speaker 1: lot more. But I'm gonna say CJ. Shroud because he
- 21:29Speaker 1: was just so clean at everything. Yeah, so the body
- 21:31Speaker 1: of work is gonna be the biggest. Yeah, absolutely, amount
- 21:34Speaker 1: of information that's used. But you can you can finish,
- 21:36Speaker 1: you can finish checking boxes at the combound and see
- 21:39Speaker 1: Stroud and over the next five or six weeks, all
- 21:42Speaker 1: this is gonna get torn apart to shreds by everyone.
- 21:44Speaker 1: That's the process. That's what we do every year. Absolutely
- 21:47Speaker 1: looking forward to the draft and coming up. And in
- 21:50Speaker 1: terms of the mock draft, the projections for Anthony Richardson,
- 21:54Speaker 1: Chad has them going thirteenth, DJ eighteenth and Lancing Hey
- 21:57Speaker 1: last night that long at faster than that, maybe a
- 22:03Speaker 1: little bit sooner than that. The product out of Florida
- 22:06Speaker 1: one of the most intriguing quarterback prospects and this year's draft,
- 22:10Speaker 1: Steve Mariot, you got to sit down with Richardson for
- 22:12Speaker 1: a whiteboard meeting of the minds and this installment of
- 22:15Speaker 1: draw my play, come on in here, Anthony Richardson, Ford Gators. Yes,
- 22:25Speaker 1: how you doing. I'm good about Thanks for doing this.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Before you sit down, come around, let's have some fun. Okay,
- 22:31Speaker 1: So I'm watching you on film. I'm watching this play.
- 22:33Speaker 1: It's in the red zone that you have and you
- 22:35Speaker 1: ran it repeatedly. Remember this. This guy's coming across here,
- 22:38Speaker 1: and this guy here is coming come kind of corner,
- 22:41Speaker 1: and he's got some kind of day and we got
- 22:43Speaker 1: a shallow cross right here, and you're always in shotgun.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Read this play for me, This one right here, this
- 22:48Speaker 1: is our man alert is pre progressing. Let me go
- 22:50Speaker 1: one too, but either call the play slot left dagger.
- 22:57Speaker 1: That's it, Slot left dagger, slot low boy dagger. Richardson fires.
- 23:05Speaker 1: So you're an athletic guy, a dual threat quarterback, right,
- 23:09Speaker 1: So I like to believe who's the best quarterback in
- 23:11Speaker 1: this draft? I am? Why because of what I'm doing.
- 23:15Speaker 1: I can do a lot of things that other quarterbacks
- 23:16Speaker 1: can't do, like what making people miss open field, running
- 23:19Speaker 1: people over, and then I can I can throw the
- 23:21Speaker 1: ball this as well anybody in this job. So I
- 23:23Speaker 1: feel I can do it all. Who's your hero? My
- 23:25Speaker 1: mom is definitely my hero. Why no, just everything she's done,
- 23:29Speaker 1: everything that she came to doing it. You know, I'm
- 23:32Speaker 1: growing up just seeing her hard. She works for my
- 23:34Speaker 1: brother and she in Gainesville. Yes, you're kind of a
- 23:37Speaker 1: rock start down there, aren't you a little bit? All right? Well,
- 23:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna show you a play. Okay, okay, be familiar
- 23:44Speaker 1: with the West Coast offense at all? Not really? Okay? Well,
- 23:47Speaker 1: get ready? All right? So here's trips right. This is
- 23:51Speaker 1: why deep. We did that sometimes so we can stay
- 23:54Speaker 1: big on big and he could help inside. Right, Zebra left,
- 23:57Speaker 1: This was a zebra. You know what I would be.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I would beat Jerry Rice. Ever heard Jerry Rice? Yeah?
- 24:02Speaker 1: The best? Okay, zebra left. We put him in motion
- 24:05Speaker 1: to a stack over here. Okay, all right, and here's
- 24:07Speaker 1: t o all right over here. Right. He's a hall
- 24:10Speaker 1: of famer. He's a hall of famer. You know that
- 24:11Speaker 1: quarterback that's Steve Young. Never played and shotgun in his life.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Anthony played under the center. All right. Seven steps and
- 24:18Speaker 1: we're talking seventy four protection. Seventy four is maximum protection
- 24:22Speaker 1: where you have one to edge over here and the
- 24:24Speaker 1: back on this edge. So it's only a three man route.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Here we go. This is JJ Stokes. He's gonna run
- 24:28Speaker 1: right through that free safety. Right. If the free safety
- 24:30Speaker 1: isn't cover two, he's going to run through that. We're
- 24:32Speaker 1: looking at him on the way back. If he messes around,
- 24:35Speaker 1: we're throwing it in there for a touchdown. If not,
- 24:37Speaker 1: if he stays home, here comes the zebra bake by
- 24:40Speaker 1: him right here instead of a shake, which is outside
- 24:42Speaker 1: the bank is on the inside, all right, So he
- 24:44Speaker 1: turns his corner all the way around. And if that
- 24:45Speaker 1: free safety, and if he stays near this guy right here,
- 24:49Speaker 1: we're throwing that in there for a touchdown. You got that?
- 24:52Speaker 1: Pretty simple? How do we control over? Here? Here comes
- 24:54Speaker 1: too and he's going to run either the shake or
- 24:57Speaker 1: if it's covered two, he's going to run that to
- 24:59Speaker 1: keep that safety out of the hair of that throw.
- 25:02Speaker 1: So that is trips right, Why deep zebra after seventy
- 25:05Speaker 1: four zebra bake? Got it? Okay? Who do you pattern
- 25:11Speaker 1: your game after? Growing up? For me, it was Cam Newton.
- 25:14Speaker 1: His ability to run the ball and throw the ball
- 25:16Speaker 1: just be physical rights give me a weakness on the
- 25:20Speaker 1: field footwork at tims, Okay, sometimes I can get a
- 25:24Speaker 1: little ansty and sloppy. That effect your accuracy sometimes maybe
- 25:27Speaker 1: at times it Cam, but sometimes it helpsn't play for
- 25:30Speaker 1: you and I can throw the ball, don't got it?
- 25:32Speaker 1: Ritchard to getting some heat, grows on the run and
- 25:34Speaker 1: he feels a striker. What is your favorite college moment
- 25:39Speaker 1: this past season? Scoring against LSU? I'll just wanting to
- 25:42Speaker 1: create space in the pocket and I've seen the lane
- 25:45Speaker 1: and Trevor is right there. I'm like, ain't go, black,
- 25:47Speaker 1: black guy right there? And didn't I just take off? Okay,
- 25:59Speaker 1: you remember my play? Draw my play? I got you
- 26:04Speaker 1: got good paymans appreciate that. Seventy four? Yeah, okay, so far,
- 26:11Speaker 1: so good? Draw that up? I got. Well, we got
- 26:17Speaker 1: a triangle that center. That's good. So you want my
- 26:21Speaker 1: guy right here? All right? Stack? Who's my guy? Who
- 26:24Speaker 1: is my guy? That was zer Rice? Yeah? For you
- 26:28Speaker 1: occupied this side of the defense? Or you want to
- 26:31Speaker 1: round the shake rise as you would call it, where's
- 26:33Speaker 1: he going? I would we would call it this a
- 26:35Speaker 1: divide ro know, even someone to divide the feel and
- 26:38Speaker 1: for the polin. Now you want to occupy this backside safety,
- 26:41Speaker 1: this is the bank round as you would call it. Okay,
- 26:44Speaker 1: you know this spending this corner around lose him and
- 26:47Speaker 1: what's the protection? Seventy four? Nice? Pro max. So if
- 26:50Speaker 1: it Blitcher's you're still pretty good, right YEA progression one,
- 26:54Speaker 1: two and three over here with the alert not bad.
- 26:57Speaker 1: When you go through these interviews with these teams, Anthony,
- 27:01Speaker 1: what do you want these general managers to know about you?
- 27:03Speaker 1: Just just like getting to know who, Yeah, how much
- 27:05Speaker 1: I care about football. They can see, you know, how physical,
- 27:08Speaker 1: how fast I around far I can throw on the tape,
- 27:10Speaker 1: But getting to know me and how much I love football.
- 27:13Speaker 1: And you've done that, Si, and that's pretty much the
- 27:15Speaker 1: main thing ever the matters. You're gonna be all right,
- 27:17Speaker 1: many thanks for doing this, Congratulations for everything, and good
- 27:20Speaker 1: luck to you. Thank you all right, Anthony Richards and
- 27:23Speaker 1: everybody back on the NFL. Now we got time for
- 27:29Speaker 1: one more thing. Was Steve Wise, James Palmer and Tom Pella. Sero, Steve,
- 27:32Speaker 1: you're up first, all right. I want to recognize the
- 27:34Speaker 1: two HBCU players who are invited to the combine. Only
- 27:38Speaker 1: two again, but Mark Evans, a guard out of Arkansas
- 27:41Speaker 1: Pine Bluff, and linebacker edge rusher Isaiah Land out of
- 27:45Speaker 1: Florida A and M who's put on about twenty pounds
- 27:48Speaker 1: since the end of the season and went out and
- 27:49Speaker 1: performed well, outstanding edge rusher who's also coming off a
- 27:52Speaker 1: strong Senior Bowl. Do you ever wonder what it's like
- 27:56Speaker 1: when the conversation goes down between a mentor stealing from
- 27:59Speaker 1: his protege's plays to win the Super Bowl? Well, Andy
- 28:02Speaker 1: Reid did that in using dumb Peterson's plays to help
- 28:04Speaker 1: win the Super Bowl. Those receivers going emotion changing directions.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Well told me after the Super Bowl he texted Andy
- 28:09Speaker 1: Reid said you're welcome, thanks for stealing my place. The
- 28:12Speaker 1: second text he said he sent said congratulation. Yeah, you
- 28:16Speaker 1: gotta gotta get into congratulations and also the thanks. Tom
- 28:19Speaker 1: would be giving your one more thing, but we gotta congratulate.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Congratulations on being on the planet for another r star.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Happy birthday to our star Tom Bellosar. Happy birthday, Tom.
- 28:31Speaker 1: That's my one more thing? Does that so you're nineteen
- 28:33Speaker 1: years old? I was gonna wish Mike McDaniel a happy birthday,
- 28:36Speaker 1: maybe Kyle Trask, but I think we all know who
- 28:39Speaker 1: the number one. March sixth birthday in the NFL take
- 28:41Speaker 1: the day off time day in history. Thanks thanks for watching.
