Thou canst make me clean. Of all diseases known in the East, the
0:05
leprosy was most dreaded. Its incurable and contagious character and its horrible effect upon
0:12
its victims filled the bravest with fear. Among the Jews, it was regarded
0:16
as a judgment on account of sin, and hints was called the stroke the
0:21
finger of God. Deep rooted, ineradicable, deadly, it was looked upon
0:27
as a symbol of sin. By the ritual law, the leper was pronounced
0:31
unclean, like one already dead. He was shut out from the habitations of
0:36
men. Whatever he touched was unclean, The air was polluted by his breath.
0:42
One who was suspected of having the disease must present himself to the priest,
0:46
who were to examine and decide his case. If pronounced a leper,
0:51
he was isolated from his family, cut off from the congregation of Israel,
0:55
and was doomed to associate with those only who were similarly afflicted. The law
1:00
was inflexible in its requirement. Even kings and rulers were not exempt. A
1:04
monarch who was attacked by this terrible disease must yield up the scepter and flee
1:10
from society, away from his friends and his kindred, the leper must bear
1:15
the curse of his malady. He was obliged to publish his own calamity,
1:19
to rind his garments, and sound the alarm, warning all to flee from
1:23
his contaminating presence. The cry unclean, unclean, coming in mournful tones from
1:30
the lonely exile, was a signal heard with fear and abhorrence. In the
1:34
region of Christ's ministry. There were many of these sufferers, and the news
1:40
of his work reached them, kindling a gleam of hope. But since the
1:44
days of Elisha the prophet, such a thing had never been known as the
1:48
cleansing of one upon whom this disease had fastened. They dared not expect Jesus
1:53
to do for them what he had never done for any man. There was
1:57
one, however, in whose heart fate began to spring up. Yet the
2:01
man knew not how to reach Jesus. Debarred as he was from contact with
2:06
his fellow men, how could he present himself to the healer? And he
2:09
questioned, if Christ would heal him, would he stoop to notice one believed
2:15
to be suffering under the judgment of God. Would he not, like the
2:19
Pharisees and even the physicians, pronounce a curse upon him and warn him to
2:23
flee from the haunts of men. He thought of all that had been told
2:27
him of Jesus, not one who had sought his help had been turned away.
2:30
The wretched man determined to find the Savior. Though shut out from the
2:35
cities, it might be that he could cross his path in some by way
2:38
along the mountain roads, or find him as he was teaching outside the towns.
2:43
The difficulties were great, but this was his only hope. The leper
2:47
is guided to the Savior. Jesus is teaching beside the lake, and the
2:53
people are gathered about him. Standing afar off, the leper catches a few
2:57
words from the Savior's lips. He him. Laying his hands upon the sick.
3:01
He sees the lame, the blind, the paralytic, and those dying
3:06
of various maladies rise up in health, praising God for their deliverance. Faith
3:10
strengthens in his heart. He draws nearer and yet nearer to the gathered throng
3:16
the restrictions laid upon him, the safety of the people and the fear with
3:21
which all men regard him are forgotten. He thinks only of the blessed hope
3:25
of healing. He is a loathsome spectacle. The disease has made frightful inroads,
3:32
and his decaying body is horrible to look upon. At sight of him,
3:38
the people fall back in terror. They crowd upon one another in their
3:42
eagerness to escape from contact with him. Some try to prevent him from approaching
3:46
Jesus, but in vain he neither sees nor hears them. Their expressions of
3:52
loathing are lost upon him. He sees only the Son of God. He
3:55
hears only the voice that speaks life to the dying. Pressing to Jesus,
4:00
he cast himself at his feet with the cry, Lord, if thou wilt,
4:05
thou canst make me clean. Jesus replied, I will be thou made
4:12
clean, and laid his hand upon him Matthew eight three r V. Immediately
4:17
a change passed over the leper. His flesh became healthy, the nerve sensity,
4:23
the muscles firm, The rough scaly surface peculiar to leprosy disappeared, and
4:28
a soft glow like that upon the skin of a healthy child took its place.
4:33
Jesus charged a man not to make known the work that had been wrought,
4:36
but straightway to present himself with an offering at the temple. Such an
4:42
offering could not be accepted until the priest had made examination and pronounced the man
4:46
wholly free from the disease. However unwilling they might be to perform this service,
4:50
they could not evade an examination and decision of the case. The words
4:56
of scriptures show with what urgency christ enjoined upon them man the necessity of silence
5:01
and prompt action. He straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away and
5:06
seth unto him. See thou say nothing to any man, but go thy
5:11
way, show thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things
5:15
which Moses commanded for a testimony unto them. Had the priest known the facts
5:19
concerning the healing of the leper, their hatred of Christ might have led them
5:24
to render a dishonest sentence. Jesus desired the man to present himself at the
5:29
temple before any rumors concerning the miracle had reached them. Thus an impartial decision
5:33
could be secured, and the restored leper would be permitted to unite once more
5:38
with his family and friends. There were other objects which Christ had in view.
5:43
In enjoining silence on the man, The Savior knew that his enemies were
5:46
ever seeking to limit his work and to turn the people from him. He
5:49
knew that if the healing of the leper were noised abroad, other sufferers from
5:54
this terrible disease would crowd about him, and the cry would be raised that
5:58
the people would be contemnedminated by contact with them. Many of the lepers would
6:02
not so use the gift of health as to make it a blessing to themselves
6:06
or to others, And by drawing the lepers about him, he would give
6:10
occasion for the charge that he was breaking down the restrictions of the ritual law.
6:15
Thus his work in preaching the Gospel would be hindered. The event justified
6:18
Christ's warning. A multitude of people had witnessed the healing of the leper,
6:23
and they were eager to learn of the priest's decision. When the man returned
6:27
to his friends, there was great excitement. Notwithstanding the caution of Jesus,
6:30
the man made no further effort to conceal the facts of his cure. It
6:35
would indeed have been impossible to conceal it. But the leper published the matter
6:40
abroad. Conceiving that it was only the modesty of Jesus which laid this restriction
6:45
upon him, he went about proclaiming the power of this great healer. He
6:48
did not understand that every such manifestation made the priests and elders more determined to
6:54
destroy Jesus. The restored man felt that the boon of health was very precious.
7:00
He rejoiced in the vigor of manhood and in his restoration to his family
7:03
and society, and felt it impossible to refrain from giving glory to the physician
7:09
who had made him whole. But his act in blazing abroad the matter resulted
7:14
in hindering the Saviour's work. It caused the people to flock to him in
7:17
such multitudes that he was forced for a time to cease his labors. Every
7:23
act of Christ's ministry was far reaching in its purpose. It comprehended more than
7:28
appeared in the act itself. So in the case of the leper, while
7:31
Jesus ministered to all who came unto him, he yearned to bless those who
7:35
came not. While he drew the publicans the Heathen and the Samaritans. He
7:41
longed to reach the priest and teachers, who were shut in by prejudice and
7:44
tradition. He left untried no means by which they might be reached. In
7:48
sending the healed leper to the priest, he gave them a testimony calculated to
7:53
disarm their prejudices. The Pharisees had asserted that Christ's teaching was opposed to the
7:59
law which God is given to Moses. But his direction to the Klin's leper
8:03
to present an offering according to the law disproved this charge. It was sufficient
8:07
testimony for all who were willing to be convinced. The leaders at Jerusalem had
8:11
sent out spies to find some pretext for putting Christ to death. He responded
8:16
by giving them an evidence of his love for humanity, his respect for the
8:20
law, and his power to deliver from sin and death. Thus he bore
8:24
witness of them, they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for
8:28
my love Psalms one O nine five. He who on the mount gave the
8:33
precept love your enemies himself exemplified the principle, not rendering evil for evil or
8:41
railing for railing, but contrariwise, blessing Matthew five forty four one Peter three
8:46
nine, the same priest who condemned the leper to banishment certified his cure.
8:52
This sentence, publicly pronounced and registered, was a standing testimony for Christ,
8:58
and as the healed man was reinstated in the Congregation of Israel, upon the
9:03
priest's own assurance that there was not a taint of the disease upon him,
9:07
he himself was a living witness for his benefactor. Joyfully he presented his offering
9:13
and magnified the name of Jesus. The priest were convinced of the divine power
9:18
of the Savior. Opportunity was granted them to know the truth and to be
9:22
profited by the light. Rejected it would pass away, never to return.
9:26
By many, the light was rejected, yet it was not given in vain.
9:31
Many hearts removed that for a time made no sign. During the Saviour's
9:35
life, his mission seemed to call forth little response of love from the priests
9:39
and teachers. But after his ascension a great company of the priest were obedient
9:45
to the faith. Acts six seven. The work of Christ in cleansing the
9:50
leper from his terrible disease is an illustration of his work in cleansing the soul
9:54
from sin. The man who came to Jesus was full of leprosy, its
9:58
dead poisoned permeated his whole body. The disciples sought to prevent their master from
10:03
touching him, for he who touched the leper became himself unclean. But in
10:09
laying his hand upon the leper, Jesus received no defilement. His touch imparted
10:13
life giving power. The leprosy was cleansed. Thus it is with the leprosy
10:18
of sin, deep rooted, deadly, and impossible to be cleansed by human
10:24
power. The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From
10:28
the soul of the foot. Even unto the head, there is no soundness
10:31
in it, but wounds and bruises and putrefying sores Isaiah one five and six.
10:39
But Jesus, coming to dwell in humanity, receives no pollution. His
10:43
presence has healing virtue for the sinner, whoever will fall at his feet,
10:48
saying in faith, Lord, if thou wilt thou canst make me clean?
10:52
Shall hear thee answer? I will be thou made clean Matthew eight two three
10:58
are in some instances of healing, Jesus did not at once grant the blessing
11:05
sought. But in the case of leprosy, no sooner was the appeal made
11:09
than it was granted. When we pray for earthly blessings, the answer to
11:13
our prayer may be delayed, or God may give us something other than we
11:18
ask, but not so when we ask for deliverance from sin. It is
11:22
His will to cleanse us from sin, to make us his children, and
11:26
to enable us to live a holy life. Christ gave himself for our sins
11:30
that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will
11:33
of God and our Father Galatians one four. And this is the confidence that
11:39
we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to his will,
11:43
he heareth us. And if we know that he hear us whatsoever we ask,
11:48
we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. First
11:52
John five, fourteen fifteen. If we confess our sins, he is faithful
11:56
and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
12:01
First John one nine. In the healing of the paralytic at Capernaum, Christ
12:05
again taught the same truth. It was to manifest his power to forgive sins
12:11
that the miracle was performed, and the healing of the paralytic also illustrates other
12:16
precious truths. It is full of hope and encouragement, and from its connection
12:20
with the caviling Pharisees, it has a lesson of warning as well. Like
12:24
the leper, this paralytic had lost all hope of recovery. His disease was
12:30
the result of a life of sin, and his sufferings were embittered by remorse.
12:35
He had long before appealed to the Pharisees and doctors, hoping for relief
12:39
from mental suffering and physical pain, but they coldly pronounced him incurable and abandoned
12:45
him to the wrath of God. The Pharisees regarded affliction as an evidence of
12:50
divine displeasure, and they held themselves aloof from the sick and the needy.
12:54
Yet often these very ones who exalted themselves as holy, were more guilty than
13:00
the sufferers they condemned. The palsied man was entirely helpless, and seeing no
13:05
prospect of aid from any quarter, he had sunk into despair. Then he
13:09
heard at the wonderful works of Jesus. He was told that others as sinful
13:15
and helpless as he had been healed, even lepers, had been cleansed.
13:18
And the friends who reported these things encouraged him to believe that he too might
13:22
be cured if he could be carried to Jesus. But his hope fell when
13:26
he remembered how the disease had been brought upon him. He feared that the
13:31
pure physician would not tolerate him in his presence. Yet it was not physical
13:37
restoration he desired so much as relief from the burden of sin. If he
13:41
could see Jesus and receive the assurance of forgiveness and peace with Heaven, he
13:46
would be content to live or die according to God's will. The cry of
13:52
the dying man was, Oh, that I might come into his presence.
13:56
There was no time to lose. Already his wasted flesh was shown signs of
14:00
decay. He besought his friends to carry him on his bed to Jesus,
14:05
and this they gladly undertook to do. But so dense was the crowd that
14:09
had assembled in and about the house where the Savior was that it was impossible
14:13
for the sick man and his friends to reach him, or even to come
14:16
within hearing of his voice. Jesus was teaching in the House of Peter,
14:20
according to their custom. His disciples set close about him, and there were
14:24
pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every
14:28
town of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem. These had come as spies seeking an
14:33
accusation against Jesus. Outside of these officials thronged the promiscuous multitude, the eager,
14:41
the reverend, the curious, and the unbelieving. Different nationalities in all
14:46
grades of society were represented, and the power of the Lord was present to
14:50
heal. The spirit of life brooded over the assembly, but pharisees and doctors
14:56
did not discern its presence. They felt no sense of need, and the
15:00
healing was not for them. He hath filled the hungry with good things,
15:03
and the rich he hath sent empty away Luke one fifty three. Again and
15:09
again, the bearers of the paralytic tried to push their way through the crowd,
15:13
but in vain the sick man looked about him in unutterable anguish. When
15:18
the long forehelp was so near, how could he relinquish hope. At his
15:24
suggestion, his friends bore him to the top of the house, and,
15:26
breaking up the roof, let him down at the feet of Jesus. The
15:31
discourse was interrupted. The Savior looked upon the mournful countenance and saw the pleading
15:37
eyes fixed upon him. He understood the case he had drawn to himself,
15:41
that perplexed and doubting spirit. While the paralytic was yet at home, the
15:46
Savior had brought conviction to his conscience when he repented of his sins and believed
15:52
in the power of Jesus to make him whole. The life giving mercies of
15:56
the Savior had first blessed his longing heart. Jesus had watched the first glimmer
16:02
of faith grow into a belief that he was the sinner's only helper, and
16:07
had seen it grow stronger with every effort to come into his presence. Now,
16:11
in words, it fell like music on the sufferer's ear. The Savior
16:17
said, Son, be of good cheer, Thy sins be forgiven thee The
16:22
burden of despair rolls from the sick man's soul. The peace of forgiveness rests
16:29
upon his spirit and shines out upon his countenance, His physical pain is gone,
16:33
and his whole being is transformed. The helpless paralytic is healed, the
16:40
guilty sinner is pardoned. In simple faith, he accepted the words of Jesus
16:45
as the boon of new life. He urged no further request, but lay
16:49
in blissful silence, too happy for words. The light of Heaven irradiated his
16:55
countenance, and the people looked with awe upon the scene. The rabbis had
17:00
waited anxiously to see what disposition Christ would make of this case. They recollected
17:06
how the man had appealed to them for help, and they had refused him
17:10
hope or sympathy. Not satisfied with this, they had declared that he was
17:15
suffering the curse of God for his sins. These things came fresh to their
17:19
minds when they saw the sick man before them. They marked the interest with
17:23
which all were watching the scene, and they felt the terrible fear of losing
17:27
their own influence over the people. These dignitaries did not exchange words together,
17:33
but looking into one another's faces, they read the same thought in each that
17:40
something must be done to arrest the tide of feeling. Jesus had declared that
17:44
the sins of the paralytic were forgiven. The Pharisees caught at these words as
17:48
blasphemy, and conceived that they could present this as a sin worthy of death.
17:53
They said, in their hearts, he blasphemeth who can forgive sins?
17:59
But one even God Mark two seven r V. Fixing his glance upon them,
18:04
beneath which they cowered and drew back, Jesus said, whereforethink ye evil
18:11
in your hearts, For whether is easier to say thy sins be forgiven thee,
18:15
or to say, arise and walk, But that ye may know that
18:18
the son a man hath power on earth to forgive sins, he said,
18:23
turning to the paralytic, Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto
18:29
thine house. Then, he who had been born on a litter to Jesus,
18:33
rises to his feet with the elasticity and strength of youth. The life
18:37
giving blood bounds through his veins. Every organ of his body springs into sudden
18:42
activity. The glow of health succeeds the pallor of approaching death. And immediately
18:48
he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them, all
18:52
insomuch that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, we never saw
18:57
it on this fashion, O wondrous love of Christ stooping to heal the guilty
19:03
in the afflicted divinity, sorrowing over and soothing the ills of suffering humanity.
19:10
Oh, marvelous power thus displayed to the children of men. Who can doubt
19:14
the message of salvation? Who can slight the mercies of a compassionate redeemer.
19:19
It required nothing less than creating power to restore health to that decaying body.
19:25
The same voice that spoke life to man created from the dust of the earth,
19:30
had spoken life to the dying paralytic. And the same power that gave
19:34
life to the body had renewed the heart. He who at the creation spake
19:40
an it was who commanded, and it stood fast Psalm thirty three nine,
19:45
had spoken life to the soul dead in trespasses and sins. The healing of
19:49
the body was an evidence of the power that had renewed the heart. Christ
19:53
bade the paralytic arise and walk, that ye may know. He said that
19:59
the son of Man power on earth to forgive sins. The paralytic found in
20:03
Christ healing for both the soul and the body. The spiritual healing was followed
20:07
by physical restoration. This lesson should not be overlooked. There are to day
20:12
thousands suffering from physical disease, who, like the paralytic, are longing for
20:18
the message thy sins are forgiven. The burden of sin, with its unrest
20:23
and unsatisfied desires, is the foundation of their maladies. They can find no
20:29
relief until they come to the healer of the soul. The peace which he
20:33
alone can give would impart vigor to the mind and health to the body.
20:38
Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. In him was life,
20:42
and he says, I am come that they might have life, and that
20:47
they might have it more abundantly. He is a quickening spirit First John three
20:52
eight, John one, four, ten ten, First Corinthians, fifteen forty
20:56
five. And he still has the same life giving power as when on earth
21:00
he healed the sick and spoke forgiveness to the sinner. He forgiveth all thine
21:06
iniquities. He healeth all thy diseases Psalms one, O. Three three.
21:11
The effect produced on people by the healing of the paralytic was as if Heaven
21:15
had opened and revealed the glories of the better world. As the man who
21:19
had been cured passed through the multitude, blessing God at every step, and
21:25
bearing his burden as if it were a feather's weight, the people fell back
21:29
to give him room, and with awe stricken faces gazed upon him, whispering
21:33
softly among themselves, we have seen strange things to day. The Pharisees were
21:40
dumb with amazement and overwhelmed with defeat. They saw that here was no opportunity
21:45
for their jealousy to inflame the multitude. The wonderful work wrought upon the man
21:49
whom they had given over to the wrath of God had so impressed the people
21:55
that the rabbis were for the time forgotten. They saw that Christ possessed a
21:59
power which they had ascribed to God alone. Yet the gentle dignity of his
22:03
manner was in marked contrast to their own haughty bearing. They were disconcerted and
22:08
abashed, recognizing but not confessing the presence of a superior being. The stronger
22:15
the evidence that Jesus had power on earth to forgive sins, the more firmly
22:19
they intrenched themselves in unbelief. From the home of Peter, where they had
22:23
seen the paralytic restored by his word, they went away to invent new schemes
22:29
for silencing the Son of God. Physical disease, however malignant and deep seated,
22:34
was healed by the power of Christ, but the disease of the soul
22:38
took a firmer hold upon those who closed their eyes against the light. Leprosy
22:44
and palsy were not so terrible as bigotry and unbelief. In the home of
22:48
the healed paralytic, there was great rejoicing when he returned to his family,
22:52
carrying with ease the couch upon which he had been slowly born from their presence,
22:56
but a short time before they gathered round with tears of joy, scarcely
23:03
daring to believe their eyes, he stood before them in the full vigor of
23:07
manhood. Those arms that they had seen lifeless were quick to obey his will.
23:12
The flesh that had been shrunken and leaden hued, was now fresh and
23:15
ready. He walked with a firm, free step. Joy and hope were
23:21
written in every lineament of his countenance, and an expression of purity and peace
23:25
had taken the place of the marks of sin and suffering. Glad, thanksgiving,
23:30
went up from that home, and God was glorified through his son,
23:33
who had restored hope to the hopeless and strength to the stricken one. This
23:38
man and his family were ready to lay down their lives for Jesus. No
23:42
doubt dimmed their faith, no unbelief marred their fealty to him who had brought
23:48
light into their darkened home. End of Chapter twenty seven.
