- 0:00Speaker 1: This is all most Famous Beyond the Bachelor with Susie Evans.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Hello, Hello, you are listening to Beyond the Bachelor. This
- 0:09Speaker 2: is your host, Susie Evans, and today we have a
- 0:11Speaker 2: really exciting guest. Today we have on Chris Lane. He
- 0:15Speaker 2: performed for her on season twenty one of The Bachelor.
- 0:18Speaker 2: It was Nick File's season, and today we are going
- 0:21Speaker 2: to chat all things music, career, Bachelor.
- 0:24Speaker 3: And even a little bit of a hot topic.
- 0:27Speaker 2: He posted a picture not too long ago including his
- 0:31Speaker 2: wife Lauren and Ben Higgins at the time they were engaged,
- 0:36Speaker 2: and it kind of ruffled some feathers in Bachelor nations.
- 0:39Speaker 3: So we're going to hop right in.
- 0:41Speaker 2: You performed for her on season twenty one of The Bachelor.
- 0:44Speaker 2: For Nick File, what was it like to bring your
- 0:48Speaker 2: music into reality TV? And did that environment provide new
- 0:52Speaker 2: community and new listeners for you? Uh?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Yeah, so that was quite some time ago. I wonder
- 0:59Speaker 1: what season he was a part of, because that's been
- 1:02Speaker 1: at least what six seven years ago? Maybe mm hmm.
- 1:05Speaker 2: It was season twenty one, and I think they're on
- 1:07Speaker 2: I want to see they're on season twenty eight or
- 1:09Speaker 2: twenty nine. I always forget, but it's been a minute,
- 1:12Speaker 2: been a hot minute.
- 1:13Speaker 1: So that was the second song ever that I had
- 1:17Speaker 1: out on the radio, so it's still very young in
- 1:19Speaker 1: my career. I felt like in the moment, it was
- 1:23Speaker 1: a really good moment for me. I mean, any TV time,
- 1:28Speaker 1: I feel like always helps. And I remember the day
- 1:31Speaker 1: after that aired, the song went crazy on iTunes. That
- 1:37Speaker 1: was That's how long ago it's been. That's when people
- 1:39Speaker 1: actually got bought songs on.
- 1:40Speaker 3: iTunes, right, that is wild.
- 1:43Speaker 1: So yeah, it really helped out a lot just getting
- 1:46Speaker 1: that exposure. I think it went a lot different than
- 1:50Speaker 1: I was expecting, just because I haven't done a whole
- 1:52Speaker 1: lot in TV up to that point outside of like
- 1:55Speaker 1: playing on Jimmy Fallon or somewhere like that. It was
- 2:00Speaker 1: it was like one of the only other TV performances
- 2:03Speaker 1: I had done, so kind of getting exposed to that audience.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I feel like I've learned, just from my wife stuff
- 2:10Speaker 1: that the Bachelor Nation is a real thing. And yeah,
- 2:14Speaker 1: it turned out being to be a great opportunity for me,
- 2:17Speaker 1: and especially early in my career like that.
- 2:20Speaker 3: That's so awesome.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, because you kind of popped off right before performing
- 2:24Speaker 2: on the show.
- 2:24Speaker 3: I feel like from what I understand.
- 2:26Speaker 2: It was like the year before you kind of dropped
- 2:28Speaker 2: your your I don't know if it was your first single,
- 2:30Speaker 2: but it was like your first single that was really
- 2:33Speaker 2: really took off, right.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah, a song called Fix, which fix and for her,
- 2:39Speaker 1: both of those songs were on my first album. Fixed
- 2:43Speaker 1: was my first number one on the radio, and then
- 2:46Speaker 1: for her it was kind of that second song we
- 2:48Speaker 1: had released out there. And yeah, man, it's crazy to
- 2:52Speaker 1: think back that far, but those were some good times. Yeah,
- 2:57Speaker 1: good things, exciting times, especially you know again in that
- 3:00Speaker 1: opportunity felt like a really great opportunity at the time,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and it played out great.
- 3:06Speaker 2: That's so awesome. Did you have any behind the scenes
- 3:12Speaker 2: insight that you feel like you could share with the viewers?
- 3:14Speaker 2: Like I feel like people always want to know I
- 3:16Speaker 2: was on the show a few years ago, and people
- 3:17Speaker 2: are always like, is it real? Is it scripted? And
- 3:21Speaker 2: obviously if you've been on set, you know it's not scripted,
- 3:24Speaker 2: certainly produced, But do you have any behind the scenes
- 3:26Speaker 2: ta that you can share with people?
- 3:29Speaker 1: You know what? Remembering back to that night, I think
- 3:33Speaker 1: from my perspective, because I didn't know how it worked,
- 3:36Speaker 1: it was a little different than I was expecting in
- 3:39Speaker 1: the sense of, I guess they needed to make sure
- 3:41Speaker 1: that they got all the right shots, so we had
- 3:44Speaker 1: to redo it several different times, which was kind of
- 3:47Speaker 1: funny in the moment. You know, Luckily I got to
- 3:49Speaker 1: play in front of a crowd full of people, so
- 3:52Speaker 1: I didn't just play one song, which you know, it
- 3:55Speaker 1: kind of comes off that way if you watch it
- 3:57Speaker 1: on TV, it's like I'm there waiting just to play
- 3:59Speaker 1: one song for them as they walk in. It was
- 4:02Speaker 1: completely different than that. I played a whole concert to
- 4:06Speaker 1: a crowd full of people, and then Nick and I
- 4:11Speaker 1: believe he was on a date with the girl and
- 4:14Speaker 1: yo at Tom they walk in. Obviously everybody's screaming. They
- 4:19Speaker 1: come down, they do they dance to the song in
- 4:22Speaker 1: front of everybody up on a platform, which I honestly,
- 4:26Speaker 1: I was already like I had a smile on my
- 4:28Speaker 1: face while they're doing that, because it kind of felt,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I'm sure for them, probably a little awkward, yep in
- 4:33Speaker 1: the moment. But then after the song they stop and
- 4:38Speaker 1: they're like, all right, we need to redo it. So
- 4:39Speaker 1: they take everybody back out and like bring them back in,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and then everybody's got to like scream for him again,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and I just I was expecting it to go that way,
- 4:49Speaker 1: but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do
- 4:51Speaker 1: to make sure you get the right shots on TV. Right.
- 4:54Speaker 3: That's so true.
- 4:54Speaker 2: That reminds me when I was on the show They
- 4:57Speaker 2: I had a performance like that and we had to
- 5:01Speaker 2: do it like three or four times, and I felt
- 5:02Speaker 2: every time I got more embarrassed because I was like,
- 5:04Speaker 2: it was so special the first time, and I don't
- 5:07Speaker 2: want to come off it's insincere and walk back in
- 5:10Speaker 2: and be like, oh, I've already seen all this, so
- 5:12Speaker 2: you like have to like kind of act.
- 5:14Speaker 3: A little bit. But I'm like, I'm like, can.
- 5:16Speaker 2: You use the first take? Because that was like real?
- 5:18Speaker 2: But it's kind of uncomfortable. But it's nice that you're
- 5:21Speaker 2: just getting to do a real performance, not have to
- 5:26Speaker 2: recreate the same song over and over again. That would
- 5:28Speaker 2: have been wild.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I can't imagine being in you all shoes in that moment.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah I would. I would. I don't have the personality
- 5:34Speaker 1: to I wouldn't be good at faking it, I guess,
- 5:36Speaker 1: is what I'm trying to say.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Okay, so I'm curious, So you have obviously a big
- 5:52Speaker 2: crossover with Bachelor Nation having performed on it. Obviously being
- 5:57Speaker 2: married to Lauren. Do you guys ever watched the show
- 6:01Speaker 2: together anymore?
- 6:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it took quite some time. Even when we first
- 6:05Speaker 1: started dating, we never watched it. And and a lot
- 6:08Speaker 1: of that in part because you know, I'm spending two
- 6:11Speaker 1: hundred and some days out on the road a year,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and and uh, we just didn't watch a lot of TV.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Like when we were at home, we'd try to go
- 6:18Speaker 1: to dinner somewhere and spend time together. And it wasn't
- 6:22Speaker 1: always watching TV, you know. But I would say over
- 6:26Speaker 1: the last couple of years, we've definitely caught uh probably
- 6:30Speaker 1: the last two or three seasons. And then I think
- 6:34Speaker 1: this past year we watched is it Bachelor in Paradise?
- 6:38Speaker 1: Is that what they call it? M Yeah, I mean
- 6:41Speaker 1: I have to say, I'm I'm always uh thoroughly entertained
- 6:46Speaker 1: in the best way. It's it's fun to watch, yeah,
- 6:50Speaker 1: from week week, So even if we're not home on
- 6:51Speaker 1: a Monday night, but we'll usually record it and find
- 6:54Speaker 1: time to either catch up on it sometime that week
- 6:57Speaker 1: or maybe I'm at home on on Monday the following
- 7:00Speaker 1: week and We try to catch up to it, but
- 7:01Speaker 1: you know, with having two kids under too, it's hard
- 7:04Speaker 1: to watch any TV. And by the time we get
- 7:06Speaker 1: them down at night, we're like, oh my gosh, I
- 7:09Speaker 1: need a mental break and to get some sleep.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I can only imagine. I have a niece and
- 7:14Speaker 2: nephew that are around that same age. I'm curious, so,
- 7:19Speaker 2: most of your career you probably probably were writing love
- 7:21Speaker 2: songs or heartbreak songs. Have your kids inspired any music
- 7:26Speaker 2: that you have either put out or that you're gonna
- 7:28Speaker 2: put out soon.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:30Speaker 1: I wrote a song a couple of months before Dutton
- 7:33Speaker 1: was born, our first called any even met you yet.
- 7:36Speaker 1: It was just all those emotions I was going through,
- 7:41Speaker 1: about to be a dad for the first time, and
- 7:45Speaker 1: I wrote that song for him. I feel bad for
- 7:47Speaker 1: Baker being the second born. I feel like I need
- 7:49Speaker 1: to write one for him.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Yeah, you have to. I'm sure more will come.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I can recycle that one for him.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Absolutely, Yeah, my kids definitely inspire me. That was one
- 8:01Speaker 1: song in particular, and I have another one that I
- 8:04Speaker 1: just wrote and I put out on my Instagram not
- 8:06Speaker 1: long ago, maybe last week at some point that I
- 8:09Speaker 1: got some incredible feedback on one call, two by fours and
- 8:12Speaker 1: four by six is, which is, uh, it's just a
- 8:15Speaker 1: demo right now. I would have to record it, but
- 8:17Speaker 1: I wanted everybody to get a little snippid of it
- 8:20Speaker 1: and to hear it and give me their feedback. And
- 8:22Speaker 1: I feel like I got great enough feedback that I
- 8:24Speaker 1: plan on recording it. But it's kind of inspired just
- 8:26Speaker 1: by you know, I wrote Big Plans for Lauren, and
- 8:30Speaker 1: it's kind of just Big Plans two point zero but
- 8:32Speaker 1: like where life is right now. So I feel like
- 8:35Speaker 1: Lauren and the Boys definitely inspired that one as well.
- 8:38Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 8:39Speaker 2: That gave me chills because I actually wanted to ask
- 8:41Speaker 2: about big Big Plans.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Obviously you played that I your proposal? Is that right
- 8:47Speaker 3: to Lauren? Okay? So how I mean?
- 8:50Speaker 2: I am not a songwriter, so I feel like I
- 8:52Speaker 2: don't even have the context to ask the question.
- 8:55Speaker 3: But I'm like, how does it? How do you write
- 8:57Speaker 3: a song like that? Like? How does it come to you?
- 8:58Speaker 2: Do you sit down or were you inspired by a
- 9:01Speaker 2: certain moment with Lauren that made you just like did
- 9:04Speaker 2: it just flow out of you?
- 9:05Speaker 3: How did it work?
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yeah? So when I sat down to write this song.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Originally it was honestly just another love song, and I
- 9:16Speaker 1: died that that didn't start out in a way that
- 9:20Speaker 1: I said I was going to propose using this song.
- 9:23Speaker 1: So it took several times to finish the song because
- 9:26Speaker 1: I didn't know where to take the last verse. But
- 9:30Speaker 1: the guys that I wrote the song with we got
- 9:33Speaker 1: back together. We were writing a completely different song and
- 9:35Speaker 1: we were like, let's finish this one, and I said, hey,
- 9:39Speaker 1: I do plan on proposing potentially in a couple of
- 9:41Speaker 1: months from now. What if we wrote a proposal in
- 9:45Speaker 1: the third verse. I was just thinking of it. This
- 9:47Speaker 1: is a creative way to propose, because Lauren had already
- 9:50Speaker 1: given me strict instructions that if I were to ever
- 9:54Speaker 1: propose to her, it better not ever be on stage
- 9:57Speaker 1: in a stadium or anywhere like that. She wanted to
- 10:01Speaker 1: be super private, So I thought, well, what would be
- 10:03Speaker 1: a unique way to do that? And the third verse
- 10:07Speaker 1: just flowed out incredibly fast, like thirty seconds, as fast
- 10:10Speaker 1: as you could just write something down, and I wrote,
- 10:14Speaker 1: I told the guys, this is exactly what I plan
- 10:17Speaker 1: on doing. We're going to be in her parents' backyard.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I want to ask her her parents if that's okay,
- 10:23Speaker 1: and I did it there on Father's Day or Dad
- 10:26Speaker 1: was all in on it. And the way I set
- 10:29Speaker 1: this up was, you know, I would go write songs
- 10:33Speaker 1: during the day, and I'd come home that afternoon and
- 10:35Speaker 1: I would play Lauren the song that I wrote that day,
- 10:38Speaker 1: and she'd give me her opinion on it, whether she
- 10:39Speaker 1: loved it or not. And I was on tour with
- 10:42Speaker 1: Brad Paisley at the time, and I played up in Portland,
- 10:46Speaker 1: Oregon the night before I proposed, so it made it
- 10:51Speaker 1: easy for me to disguise what was going to happen.
- 10:54Speaker 1: She had no clue what was happening, so I had
- 10:57Speaker 1: the way I was able to record it without her
- 10:59Speaker 1: real what was going on is at the time, we
- 11:05Speaker 1: had been talking about doing this YouTube series, not reality thing,
- 11:11Speaker 1: but just like creating like a small little YouTube thing
- 11:14Speaker 1: for the both of us. And I said, while we're there,
- 11:17Speaker 1: since since I'm playing with Brad Paisley the night before
- 11:20Speaker 1: and we're gonna be at your parents' house celebrating Father's Day,
- 11:23Speaker 1: why don't we have my camera guy come over there
- 11:25Speaker 1: and just capture the day with your family in case
- 11:29Speaker 1: we everyoneted to use that on our page. So that's
- 11:31Speaker 1: how I disguised it. She had no clue. She just
- 11:33Speaker 1: thought that they were they're.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Doing that genius.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Yeah. And then I set the song up exactly like
- 11:40Speaker 1: I would if we were chilling in the house. I
- 11:43Speaker 1: was like, oh my gosh, I just got this demo
- 11:44Speaker 1: back of a song that I wrote. I want to play,
- 11:47Speaker 1: and we had a speaker out there, and her family
- 11:49Speaker 1: knew when that when I said that moment, everybody just
- 11:51Speaker 1: kind of come around and nonchalantly kind of listen. And
- 11:56Speaker 1: so I was playing it. The first two verses happened.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I can't tell whether she likes the song or not,
- 12:02Speaker 1: but I leaned over I said, baby, it's my favorite part,
- 12:05Speaker 1: because I needed to make sure that she was listening.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I'm about to propose in this last verse, and I
- 12:10Speaker 1: kind of blacked out from there. I remember her putting
- 12:14Speaker 1: her hands over her mouth. She's like, oh my godsh
- 12:15Speaker 1: this is happening. I grab her hand and walk her
- 12:17Speaker 1: out to the yard. And right as I was about
- 12:20Speaker 1: to get down on my knees that was barefoot that day,
- 12:23Speaker 1: I stepped in a massive dog turd. Proposed with the
- 12:26Speaker 1: turd in between my toes.
- 12:28Speaker 3: No oh, oh my gosh.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Oh yes, her parents' little Corgi dogs must have done
- 12:35Speaker 1: some damage out there right before that happened, and I
- 12:37Speaker 1: didn't know it because we've been playing we'd been playing
- 12:42Speaker 1: cornhole in that same area all day long.
- 12:45Speaker 2: That is actually so funny, and it kind of makes
- 12:48Speaker 2: the proposal better in my opinion. I feel like that
- 12:51Speaker 2: just adds an element of like humor to it. That
- 12:54Speaker 2: it's like, it's just so funny.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yeah, somebody said, I hear that's good luck, and I
- 13:00Speaker 1: have no clue how that could ever be good.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Look, I don't know, but honestly, it looks like it's working,
- 13:06Speaker 2: so something about it must have brought you guys some
- 13:08Speaker 2: good juju.
- 13:10Speaker 1: She helped me clean it off after that, and I'm like, wow,
- 13:13Speaker 1: this is what a way to propose. Also got a
- 13:17Speaker 1: whole different aspect of it.
- 13:18Speaker 3: I was not expecting that is so funny.
- 13:21Speaker 2: So I'm curious when it happened. Did you acknowledge it
- 13:23Speaker 2: or did you just keep walking?
- 13:25Speaker 1: No, I did not acknowledge it until after she said yes,
- 13:31Speaker 1: and then I looked down. I'm like, please do not
- 13:33Speaker 1: be what I think this is. And it sure was.
- 13:37Speaker 3: That is so funny I literally.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Blacked out in the moment, like I couldn't remember anything
- 13:43Speaker 1: that I wanted to say. I had this whole thing
- 13:45Speaker 1: that I wanted to say. I'd ever said one word
- 13:47Speaker 1: of it. I just whatever came out came out in
- 13:50Speaker 1: that moment. The best part about all of this is
- 13:52Speaker 1: now that that song was never intended to get out there.
- 13:55Speaker 1: It was just a moment for her and I. So
- 13:58Speaker 1: the fact that people loved it so much and ended
- 14:01Speaker 1: up making it a number one for me was was
- 14:04Speaker 1: pretty crazy because I never expected that when I again,
- 14:08Speaker 1: never planned on even releasing the song. But since the
- 14:13Speaker 1: release of that song, it helped me take the next
- 14:16Speaker 1: big step in my career. So I'm incredibly thankful for that. Obviously,
- 14:20Speaker 1: it was incredible for my life. And then I get
- 14:23Speaker 1: to watch guys on a nightly basis. While I'm out
- 14:26Speaker 1: on tour. People are always hitting us up saying, hey,
- 14:29Speaker 1: I want to I want to propose on stage to
- 14:31Speaker 1: big plans, and I it's my favorite thing that happens
- 14:37Speaker 1: not every single night, but a lot of nights because
- 14:39Speaker 1: I get to watch guys go through what I went
- 14:42Speaker 1: through when I proposed. I mean when I hand them
- 14:44Speaker 1: a microphone It's definitely different than proposing in her parents
- 14:47Speaker 1: backyard than it is on stage or the microphone in
- 14:50Speaker 1: front of a crowd full of people. I watched guys
- 14:54Speaker 1: blackout not know what they're saying, and obviously I had
- 14:57Speaker 1: just gone through that, so I can feel what they're
- 15:00Speaker 1: going through. But you and somebody microphone, they forget to
- 15:03Speaker 1: talk into it like it's funny.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Makes for an incredible moment on stage on most sides.
- 15:09Speaker 3: That's so cool.
- 15:10Speaker 2: And it's because even as you were talking about this
- 15:13Speaker 2: song and like how you weren't going to release it,
- 15:14Speaker 2: it's crazy because that's a song that you know, me
- 15:18Speaker 2: as somebody that's not in a relationship or whatever. But
- 15:20Speaker 2: you hear that song and you're like, this is this
- 15:22Speaker 2: is what I hope somebody feels for me someday, And
- 15:25Speaker 2: this is what I hope to feel for somebody someday.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Like it's such a beautiful song that it's interesting as
- 15:31Speaker 2: like normal people, we can't, you know, create art that
- 15:35Speaker 2: expresses how we feel in a way that artists can.
- 15:37Speaker 2: So it's really cool that you did put it out there.
- 15:40Speaker 2: It's even cooler that it was meant to be just
- 15:43Speaker 2: something for her, and it's taken your career to the
- 15:45Speaker 2: next level and it's become this thing that people can, like,
- 15:48Speaker 2: will come and propose at your shows. Like that is
- 15:50Speaker 2: so beautiful and cool. I can't imagine what that must
- 15:54Speaker 2: feel like.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I think as a songwriter first, it makes it
- 16:01Speaker 1: extra special when you see people connect to a song
- 16:05Speaker 1: in that way. You know. I had songs like Fix,
- 16:07Speaker 1: which is just an up tempo, like feel good song,
- 16:11Speaker 1: or her kind of love song tape that Homegirl. I
- 16:13Speaker 1: don't know about you, but this one in a different
- 16:16Speaker 1: way connected with people. And when you sit down to
- 16:18Speaker 1: write songs, that's what you're hoping to write every time,
- 16:21Speaker 1: is just a song that connects in the way that
- 16:23Speaker 1: this one did.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:25Speaker 1: I was very happy about that.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Okay, so you kind of mentioned that Lauren wanted something
- 16:31Speaker 2: really private for her proposal, and obviously, coming from the Bachelor,
- 16:36Speaker 2: it's not a real private lifestyle. Sometimes, like everyone wants
- 16:40Speaker 2: to know not just about your personal life, but specifically
- 16:43Speaker 2: your dating life and your love life. Like that becomes
- 16:47Speaker 2: such a curiosity point for people. How do you, guys
- 16:50Speaker 2: balance obviously having a public relationship because people are just
- 16:55Speaker 2: gonna be curious and you're both public figures and also
- 16:58Speaker 2: like keeping your privacy, keeping things to yourself, Like how
- 17:02Speaker 2: do you like, did you have trouble navigating that or
- 17:05Speaker 2: did it come pretty natural?
- 17:07Speaker 1: Yeah? I feel like it kind of in reality, came
- 17:11Speaker 1: pretty pretty natural in the sense of I feel like
- 17:14Speaker 1: before I met Lauren, I was pretty open, you know,
- 17:18Speaker 1: whether it be on Instagram or just even out in public.
- 17:21Speaker 1: But then when I met her, you know, she had
- 17:24Speaker 1: been I would say, even more so in the public
- 17:26Speaker 1: eye than than even a country artist is, because you're
- 17:29Speaker 1: on in front of the TV in front of millions
- 17:31Speaker 1: of people every single week. And when I met her,
- 17:37Speaker 1: obviously it was it was a long time after the show.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I mean, probably what six or seven years off the show.
- 17:44Speaker 1: I could be way off there, but it felt like
- 17:46Speaker 1: it was a long time. But I guess, as like
- 17:51Speaker 1: an influencer over how you want to say it, she
- 17:54Speaker 1: was used to kind of putting her life out there
- 17:56Speaker 1: a little bit more. And we share the things that
- 17:59Speaker 1: we want to share and keep private the things that we
- 18:01Speaker 1: don't want to share. But it's never been that hard
- 18:05Speaker 1: of a balance for me, I think now more so
- 18:07Speaker 1: than ever. Over the last two years, I haven't been
- 18:10Speaker 1: able to share as much as I want because I
- 18:13Speaker 1: feel like I'm so exhausted from the two under two aspect.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I know Lawrence is kind of the same way, Like
- 18:19Speaker 1: you don't even think about jumping online and posting a
- 18:22Speaker 1: whole bunch of stuff. We're kind of seeing that light
- 18:23Speaker 1: at the end of the tunnel now, so we're posting
- 18:25Speaker 1: a little bit more than what we were. But yeah, yeah,
- 18:30Speaker 1: I think it's pretty easy. You just share the things
- 18:32Speaker 1: you want to and the things you want to keep private.
- 18:35Speaker 1: You do that. But I feel like country fans they
- 18:37Speaker 1: love getting to know their artists and they're very loyal,
- 18:41Speaker 1: so you want to let them in on as much
- 18:43Speaker 1: as you can. And I think the funniest part about
- 18:47Speaker 1: all this, I say this all the time. We can
- 18:49Speaker 1: be anywhere this I'll know, the Bachelor Nation thing is
- 18:52Speaker 1: a real thing. We can be anywhere in this country.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Of Lauren goes out on the road with me, eating
- 18:57Speaker 1: breakfast somewhere, launch dinner wherever it may be, and people
- 19:02Speaker 1: will constantly come up to her. All these years later,
- 19:05Speaker 1: I mean, she has on the TV in a long time,
- 19:08Speaker 1: but yeah, people were like, oh my gosh, I loved
- 19:10Speaker 1: you on the show. Can I have a photo? All
- 19:12Speaker 1: that kind of stuff, and it always blows my mind.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I'm like, Wow, we're in the middle of nowhere and
- 19:16Speaker 1: they knew who you.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Yeah, that's pretty cool.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I think it's the power of TV.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Yeah, the power of TV and the power of Bachelor Nation.
- 19:24Speaker 2: I'm like, since starting this podcast, I'm realizing just how
- 19:30Speaker 2: powerful the fan base is.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Like, it's crazy how what.
- 19:34Speaker 2: It can do for people's careers, whether you're contestant on
- 19:37Speaker 2: the show or an artist that comes on the show.
- 19:39Speaker 2: It's like, it's really wild to see how it can
- 19:43Speaker 2: just affect people. And I mean it could be negative too,
- 19:45Speaker 2: but usually in a very positive way.
- 19:47Speaker 3: So that's pretty cool.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it. Girls come through, so you know,
- 19:52Speaker 1: artists do meet and griefs before the show and all
- 19:54Speaker 1: that kind of stuff, and girls come through every single night.
- 19:57Speaker 1: They're like, oh my god, is Lauren here? And I'm
- 20:00Speaker 1: like the boys to night They're like, oh my god,
- 20:03Speaker 1: we love her so much. We love you, but we
- 20:05Speaker 1: love her way More's.
- 20:07Speaker 3: That's the best compliment.
- 20:09Speaker 1: That's the I agree.
- 20:10Speaker 3: So we will have the boys because they're both under two,
- 20:15Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 20:15Speaker 1: Or they actually Dutton just turned three. Okay, I've been
- 20:19Speaker 1: saying two hundred two for so long, or forgetting three
- 20:22Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago. But yeah, they're fifteen months apart.
- 20:26Speaker 3: That's perfect. That's gonna be so fun for them.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Yes, in about four or five years from now, we'll
- 20:31Speaker 1: appreciate it. We did it so close. But yeah, two years,
- 20:37Speaker 1: it's been. Uh, it's been a grind, to say the least.
- 20:40Speaker 1: It's been an awesome grind.
- 20:52Speaker 2: So have they been out on the road at all
- 20:54Speaker 2: with you guys or did they always stay back in Nashville.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Yeah, we tried with Dutton when it was just them,
- 21:01Speaker 1: and I think sleeping on a tour bus is a
- 21:04Speaker 1: whole different thing that may take them a while to
- 21:07Speaker 1: get used to. So we're gonna wait a couple of
- 21:10Speaker 1: years before we try to bring him out like maybe
- 21:12Speaker 1: here there. Every once in a while we will, but
- 21:16Speaker 1: for the most part, I have to have a voice,
- 21:18Speaker 1: and if I don't sleep because they're not sleeping, it's
- 21:20Speaker 1: gonna be hard to sing later that night.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that's tough to navigate. But it will be really
- 21:26Speaker 3: cool when they're older.
- 21:27Speaker 1: And oh, yeah, I can't wait.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Do you think you'll put them in any kind of
- 21:31Speaker 3: like music lessons proactively. Are you gonna wait and see
- 21:34Speaker 3: if they're drawn to it?
- 21:35Speaker 1: Like we're definitely drawn to it. Both of them already
- 21:38Speaker 1: love music so much. You know, I play guitar here
- 21:41Speaker 1: in the house a lot, and they love, love, love
- 21:45Speaker 1: the guitar. They're dancing to it now when I'm out
- 21:49Speaker 1: on the road. Lauren sends me videos all the time.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Dunton has this like electronic guitar. He's always has it
- 21:56Speaker 1: around his neck and he's always playing it and singing songs.
- 22:00Speaker 1: We never know what he's saying when he's singing, but
- 22:03Speaker 1: he's constantly singing. So I feel like maybe we've got
- 22:05Speaker 1: a little singer on our hands.
- 22:07Speaker 3: That's pretty cool.
- 22:08Speaker 2: That would be really awesome, And it's gonna be even
- 22:11Speaker 2: cooler when they can't come out on the road and
- 22:13Speaker 2: see what you do and have the magnitude of, oh
- 22:16Speaker 2: my gosh, this is what my dad's job is.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I know, I brought I was doing this series XIM
- 22:21Speaker 1: thing during CMA Fest and we brought the kids out.
- 22:24Speaker 1: That's the first time they really ever seen me do
- 22:26Speaker 1: anything to where Dutton kind of can understand what's going
- 22:29Speaker 1: on a little bit. So I get up there to play,
- 22:33Speaker 1: and all he wants me to play is old McDonald
- 22:36Speaker 1: had a farm. So I just broke it out right
- 22:38Speaker 1: there on the guitar in front of everybody on the radio,
- 22:41Speaker 1: and it made for a funny moment.
- 22:43Speaker 3: That's amazing, That's so cool.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Okay, I've got a couple more questions before I let
- 22:49Speaker 2: you go, But one of them is what advice would
- 22:52Speaker 2: you give to a younger version of yourself, Whether it's relationship,
- 22:57Speaker 2: whether it's career like your where you're at now, you're
- 23:01Speaker 2: in a really good place with both of those things.
- 23:03Speaker 3: What would you say to your younger self.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Wow, that's a great question. I think I would say,
- 23:13Speaker 1: I'm proud of you for being patient and not settling.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Is the first thing that kind of pops in my head.
- 23:19Speaker 1: You know, I was in a couple of relationships before Lauren,
- 23:23Speaker 1: nothing like crazy long. But I'm just I guess thankful
- 23:30Speaker 1: that I didn't settle and always knew exactly kind of
- 23:33Speaker 1: what I wanted and I didn't really know that I
- 23:35Speaker 1: would find that until I met her. But you know,
- 23:40Speaker 1: I think when you're an artist and you're trying to
- 23:44Speaker 1: have a career, there's not a whole lot of time
- 23:46Speaker 1: to dedicate to somebody else that you got to put
- 23:49Speaker 1: it all out there for yourself. So I'm incredibly thankful
- 23:53Speaker 1: I was patient in those moments and didn't try to
- 23:55Speaker 1: force anything to happen. And you know, it was weird.
- 24:00Speaker 1: In reality, I was always the guy who said I
- 24:03Speaker 1: didn't want to get married, didn't want kids. That was
- 24:06Speaker 1: just one of those things I kind of felt in
- 24:07Speaker 1: my heart. And it's pretty crazy when you meet somebody
- 24:13Speaker 1: that you want to spend the rest of your life with,
- 24:15Speaker 1: they change everything about the way that you thought about
- 24:18Speaker 1: all of those things. And I remember the day that
- 24:23Speaker 1: Dutton was born. I was holding in my arms and
- 24:26Speaker 1: I'm not an emotional person, but I just started crying
- 24:29Speaker 1: and I was like, Lord, thank you for not listening
- 24:31Speaker 1: to me for all those times I said I didn't
- 24:33Speaker 1: want any of this stuff, because it was the greatest
- 24:36Speaker 1: thing that ever happened to me.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Wow, that's really cool. That's amazing, and I'm happy for you, Like,
- 24:43Speaker 2: that's just that's just really cool.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Yeah, it all worked out.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, And.
- 24:50Speaker 2: I feel like that's a good reminder for anyone out
- 24:52Speaker 2: there listening, myself included. I'm like, you're exactly where you're
- 24:56Speaker 2: meant to be, and you've got to have faith and
- 24:59Speaker 2: things are gonna turn out exactly how they're meant to be.
- 25:02Speaker 3: So that's really cool to hear.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Yeah, the worst thing anybody can do, honestly is settle.
- 25:06Speaker 1: And you know when you have like the gut instinct
- 25:08Speaker 1: and gut feeling that it's not everything that you want
- 25:12Speaker 1: it to be. Because I believe that, I believe in prayer,
- 25:16Speaker 1: I know that it works and when it's meant to happen,
- 25:20Speaker 1: and it's happening in the Lord's timing, it'll be everything
- 25:24Speaker 1: you want and then some.
- 25:27Speaker 3: I love that. That's amazing.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Okay, So before I let you go, I've got I
- 25:31Speaker 2: think it's a funny question. But this show is about
- 25:36Speaker 2: kind of like bachelor adjacent Bachelor crossover things. So I
- 25:41Speaker 2: think it was about a month ago you posted a picture.
- 25:43Speaker 2: It was the night that you met Lauren, I believe,
- 25:46Speaker 2: and at the time she was engaged, well not at
- 25:50Speaker 2: that time, but at the time the picture was taken,
- 25:51Speaker 2: she was engaged to Ben and I think it kind
- 25:54Speaker 2: of shook up Bachelor Nation because it was like, oh
- 25:57Speaker 2: my gosh, this is a photo. It's the first night
- 25:59Speaker 2: y'all met obviously way before you guys ever dated or anything,
- 26:02Speaker 2: but it was the first night you met, So it
- 26:04Speaker 2: is a very special moment.
- 26:06Speaker 3: But it's also kind of funny, Like it's kind of funny.
- 26:10Speaker 1: And and after I saw some of the negative comments,
- 26:14Speaker 1: which you know, I don't I don't see a lot
- 26:16Speaker 1: of those, but yeah, I guess I made a few
- 26:19Speaker 1: people mad. I didn't mean to him, like did they
- 26:21Speaker 1: not read my caption? Only just looked at the photo
- 26:24Speaker 1: and didn't read the caption. So before I even posted that,
- 26:28Speaker 1: I actually texted Ben so him and I plan a
- 26:31Speaker 1: lot of these same golf tournaments together, and I've kind
- 26:33Speaker 1: of got to know him a little bit through that,
- 26:35Speaker 1: and super nice guy. And the last thing I'd ever
- 26:39Speaker 1: want to do is, uh, is do something disrespectful like that.
- 26:45Speaker 1: So I asked him if he was cool with me,
- 26:46Speaker 1: uh posting that and that obviously I don't mean anything
- 26:50Speaker 1: by it. It's just kind of her and I didn't
- 26:54Speaker 1: even start dating until four years after that photo was taken, right,
- 26:59Speaker 1: And I think people, I guess they thought that I
- 27:02Speaker 1: met her that night and then we started dating immediately
- 27:05Speaker 1: after that, which was just not even close to the case,
- 27:08Speaker 1: it was four years after the photo was taken. I
- 27:11Speaker 1: barely even saw her, spoke to her in between that time,
- 27:16Speaker 1: long long before or long after their relationship had ended,
- 27:19Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, So he was totally fine with that
- 27:23Speaker 1: and understood, and and I just thought it was a
- 27:26Speaker 1: fun way to show people like I met Lauren. I'm
- 27:29Speaker 1: playing the iHeart Festival right now, and I met her
- 27:33Speaker 1: all these years ago after this actual event when she
- 27:36Speaker 1: came off of the show, and I just thought that
- 27:40Speaker 1: was gonna be a fun moment to share. I didn't
- 27:42Speaker 1: realize it was gonna shake things up. And I guess
- 27:44Speaker 1: I should have posted Ben's okay with me posting this photo.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I think it's I personally think it's funny. Like even
- 27:53Speaker 2: when I kind of learned about the drich, I was like, actually, I.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Think that's even better.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Like I just think it's so funny how life works,
- 28:00Speaker 2: and life has worked out so beautifully for both of you.
- 28:04Speaker 2: It would be different if you did meet her that
- 28:06Speaker 2: night and swept rap her feet and then took her
- 28:09Speaker 2: away like that would be and Ben was still single,
- 28:11Speaker 2: Like that would all be a big different story.
- 28:12Speaker 3: But you both I have.
- 28:14Speaker 1: The I have the emotional intelligence I would never do
- 28:21Speaker 1: something like that to.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Something Yeah, totally.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, I know. I know that he's incredibly happy
- 28:27Speaker 1: with how things ended up for him, as I know
- 28:30Speaker 1: Lauren is. But yeah, it was pretty funny that you
- 28:33Speaker 1: brought that up, because yeah, some of the comments were like, Wow,
- 28:36Speaker 1: I can't believe you do this, and I'm like, did
- 28:38Speaker 1: you read the caption right? No.
- 28:40Speaker 2: People love to jump to conclusions, and I think that
- 28:43Speaker 2: is going back to the question about how do you
- 28:46Speaker 2: kind of balance like what you share what you don't share.
- 28:49Speaker 3: It's sometimes you have to. It's a fine.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Line because what to me is like a funny, like
- 28:56Speaker 2: interesting behind it kind of behind the scenes thing of
- 28:59Speaker 2: like how you guys originally met, you know, even though
- 29:03Speaker 2: there was no romantic connection there, but it's it's really
- 29:06Speaker 2: an interesting thing and a part of me.
- 29:08Speaker 3: If I were you, i'd be like, all right, I'm
- 29:09Speaker 3: not sharing with you guys next time.
- 29:11Speaker 2: I'm not gonna I'm gonna give you that personal, like
- 29:14Speaker 2: behind the scenes look in my life because if you're
- 29:16Speaker 2: gonna take this and run with a whatever narrative or
- 29:18Speaker 2: bleeve nasty comments like that's not something we need in
- 29:21Speaker 2: our lives. But but I think it's good because I
- 29:24Speaker 2: think it's nice to set the record straight and and
- 29:27Speaker 2: I'm sure most people actually found it kind of how
- 29:30Speaker 2: we did, where it's like this is kind of a funny,
- 29:32Speaker 2: like interesting, beautiful moment, and you know, coming off the show,
- 29:38Speaker 2: it's like it's I don't know, I mean, I know
- 29:41Speaker 2: that they were engaged, but I'm like, you're in just
- 29:43Speaker 2: such a whirlwind of an experience that like it's it's
- 29:48Speaker 2: a I feel like an engagement on the show is
- 29:50Speaker 2: kind of different than an engagement in real life and
- 29:52Speaker 2: in general, So it's just an interesting dynamic.
- 29:54Speaker 3: But I'm glad I got to ask you your your
- 29:58Speaker 3: thoughts on it.
- 29:58Speaker 2: And oh I saw Ben comment on it, and I
- 30:01Speaker 2: think he commented your lyrics back which was really.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Good, which was which was a hilarious response in the
- 30:08Speaker 1: best way. And I think that just goes to show
- 30:10Speaker 1: what kind of guy is super nice guy. And again,
- 30:14Speaker 1: I should have probably just wrote on the Dagon post
- 30:16Speaker 1: before everybody gets upset at this read the caption and
- 30:20Speaker 1: Ben said he was absolutely fine with me posting this photo. Right.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, thank you so much for joining us today.
- 30:27Speaker 2: It was a pleasure getting to know you here about
- 30:29Speaker 2: your family, your life and career a little bit, and
- 30:33Speaker 2: I just think you're the perfect gest for the show.
- 30:35Speaker 2: So thank you so much for coming on and chatting
- 30:37Speaker 2: with us.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Heck, yeah, thank you very much for having me. I
- 30:39Speaker 1: appreciate it.
- 30:40Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Take care and tell Lauren that everyone at Bacheloration loves
- 30:44Speaker 2: her and missus her.
- 30:46Speaker 1: I will, I sure will.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Thank you very much, of course, take care.
- 30:50Speaker 1: All right, nice to meet you.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Nice to meet you too, by bye, all right, see you.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Thank you so much again to Chris Lane for joining
- 30:57Speaker 2: us today I'm Beyond the Bachelor. It was such a
- 30:59Speaker 2: pleasure interviewing him, and as a fan myself, I have
- 31:01Speaker 2: to plug his new EP from where I'm sippin'. He
- 31:04Speaker 2: has some amazing songs out there, and he's also going
- 31:07Speaker 2: to be doing a little bit of touring this summer,
- 31:09Speaker 2: so check it out online to see if he's coming
- 31:11Speaker 2: to a city near you.
- 31:12Speaker 3: Thank you, guys for listening, and we'll see you next time.
- 31:14Speaker 3: I'm Beyond the Bachelor.
