- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: Hi folks.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the episode of Film Study.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: This is Ken McCuse again.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's August 11th.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'm having practice notes for today.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_00]: The 11th day of practice back in pads on Tuesday after a day off on Monday, hot and sunny practice extremely physical again and of course the preseason game is now only four days that we away.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: The big news from today was the injury suffered by Nate Wiggins.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: You probably heard about it right now.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: Describe this best I can.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: It happened in a one-on-one drill.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: Nate was in coverage of Jacobi Lane about 40 yards down the left side line.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: I did not see a lot of contact between the two players.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: I know that's being reported and tripping and stepped on his foot.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't that I didn't see it.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: But Nate had position on the ball.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: It was closest to it and he fell down hard and was immediately writhing in pain.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: The cart was brought out very quickly, Jacobi Lane, by the way, stayed with him on one knee as this was happening.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: Not never a good sign.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: Nate got up with assistance, set up on the cart as it drove off, not set up against the back of the cart because
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: set up off the side of the cart was legs dangling off and Jesse Mitter said he'd have more information on Wiggins tomorrow.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: So it's the old trainers may already know what it is but they're going to do an MRI and I'm sure they'll let us know what's going on with that tomorrow.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: The worst positive injury news is A-flowers returned to practice.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: He'd not do 11, 11, 7, and 7, or even one, on one, but he was not expected back at practice to soon in very simple terms.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: So it's very positive that he's back already.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: The other big news, Travis Jones returned to practice off the PUP list and in fact, practiced in positional drills.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: So we're still waiting for, not being that a peek to do that for the first time.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: But Travis Jones, his first day off PUP and he's already hit the sled hard.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: Now, do I have to be gay back again in uniform on the field, did calisthenics observed positional and 11 on 11 drill, so he's still limited in terms of what he can do.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: And he has peobles also returned to practice.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: He'd missed five consecutive days.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: And so this marked the very first time, this summer that all 11 defensive linemen on the 90-man roster were in uniform for practice.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: Peobles himself was a full go, and so it's great to see him back out on the field.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: Keon Martin also returned.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: He was a full go as well with all the plays he's made and with Ravens now, very significant need at corner.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's very important player for the Ravens going forward.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: Absent, Teddy Buchanan, who is the only remaining guy on PAP, Dayton Wade, who miss a fifth straight day.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: We still do not know what that injury is.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: Skyler Thompson, missed his second straight day.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: There's talk recently that Mitch or wanted was hoping he'd be back for that first preseason game.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if that's going to happen now or not, or whether that'll be Fagnano getting some time as the Ravens third quarterback.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: And lastly, Chuck West Robinson also missed practice.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think that gets everybody there.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: special team's drills were up that included some kickoff return practice and they were building up to actual reps in this today.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: So they build up reps from the first step then to half side full reps of coverage and blocking and then to finally to full 10 on 9 releases.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: The Ravens hold two back.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: You have the kicker that you have 10 up at the 40 yard line.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of what they're trying to do is make sure that players take off at the right time after the ball is caught.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: and they hear that the
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: receiving teams players can kind of either go by the kicking teams players or they can try and look back themselves and then get set on when that's going to occur and get set up to block.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: So interesting to see that get built up, we saw Tess Walker got Pancake to see attempted to make a block on the edge and Sarat got some tough love from one of the special teams coaches regarding his technique and positioning.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: Did also see Adam Randall drop
- 3:57[SPEAKER_00]: a kickoff return, he was kind of frustrated with self kind of, slapped his hands together, picked up a football.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, the kicks were out of a jugged gun, so it wasn't really live fire, and so we'll see a lot more, and including, who'll be returning kicks in the game on Saturday.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: That would be one of the interesting things.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: As I mentioned, order of entry, very important across the board, but to see who's returning kicks will be something I'm really interested in.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, move on to Lamar Jackson.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: That's what everybody wants to hear about.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: He was intercepted by Marlon Humphrey in a non full speed drill.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: That was fairly early in practice.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: It was a situational.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: You have to put the ball up.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: You're down four points with four seconds to go from the 15 yard line.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: So basically you have to fit the ball into the end zone somehow.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: uh, he tried and uh, it was intercepted by Humphrey.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: Definitely not the worst interception.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: You can have, um, but it will say this that there wasn't really a lot of attempt by the past rush at all.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: They kind of got their first step and then they just kind of gave up and let Jackson through the ball.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: That was true of the other quarterbacks who attempted this drill as well.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: And, uh, there wasn't much coverage on the other places well.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: They really were late on it, but Humphrey, uh, you know,
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: push through, made the pick coming across without any contact with the receiver.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm sure the coaches are happy to see that.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: Mark Jackson also had an interception, I'm sorry, a near interception thrown into a crowd of defenders in the direction I think of just as he'll just as he'll was kind of to the front and left side of about three defenders and there's somebody else who's among the three defenders, I'm not sure which one of those two players the second one of whom I could not identify was the target but Jackson threw it into there.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: It was very fortunate to not have that ball intercepted.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: So another bad play, a bad throw there.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: And then he had a third interception, potentially interception dropped by Balakone, who's stepped in front of a 20-yard pass, up the left numbers that was intended for walker.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: And Kone just knew how to undercut that route and did not hold out of the football even though he seemed to have it in his hands.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: By Jackson did have two very long runs.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, there appears to be no problem with Jackson's breakaway speed in particular, a number of reporters have been commenting about how fast on our Jackson looks.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: And he's getting up the sideline and
- 6:26[SPEAKER_00]: and looking like the elusive Lamar of past years, I would be absolutely shocked if we did not see a return to many of the concepts, the mesh pointed particular, and probably still a forward facing mesh that they run out of this year.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'd be very surprised if they don't hang with that with how effective it's been in the past and how much Lamar has improved the
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: Success rate of every back is ever played with that just Derek Henry.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: So I think we'll see that He did complete a 25-yard pass to Tess Walker to have a left-side line that BTJ Tampa It was not a good day for the offense to him.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: He's speaking.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna get that through these notes Not sharp, not crisp, a fair number of mistakes and and just to you know some some not terrific play at all
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: go to seven on seven situational.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: These were all red zone plays from the 18 yard line.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: We saw Jackson a walker for five yards, plus maybe about 10-yack between Smith and Humphrey.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't look like that was a touchdown, but maybe it would have been called that way.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: Then we saw Jackson go to Sirat 10 yards by the right side line.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: He extended to catch the pass, which was nice played by him.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: Also Jackson had to come down to the side.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: I think it would give us three quarters, not quite side arm, to throw it.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: So a nice way to fit a ball into kind of tight window there.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: I did not see it was in coverage.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: Then we had that near interception by that was thrown in a general direction of just as hill with three defenders around, but not, you know, hit the ground eventually.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: Huntley completed a 15 yard pass between the numbers and left hash to Cornelius Johnson.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: He made absolutely the catch of the day diving towards the back of the end zone again between that numbers and left hash and made the play extended.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: Huntley then, through to Kweiva, to beat the Luca crossing for 10 yards between the right hash and right numbers.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: And that is all I have for seven on seven.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: I have an extensive list of 11 on 11 plays.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go through these.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson, complete a 15 yard pass to Walker by the right sideline.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: In that case, Humphrey was trailing, but a nice throw in that case Jenkins was in this John Jenkins.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: This was in the backfield for what appear to be a tackle for loss of Derek Henry.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: We've had multiple cases where a,
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know, defensive lineman gets in the backfield and it's not really clear who's messed it up, but I'm sure that's something that the offensive line folks will look at and say, well, you know, he's not supposed to be here and then figure out how to get him block next time around.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: Very next play we saw Henry make a nice cutback run to space.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: It was off the offensive left side as he crossed the line of screemage, but it was kind of a start right move left play.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: We went for 10 yards approximately.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: 10 plus yards will call it off that offensive left side.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson then threw for Andrews five yards right in the middle of the field, but Hamilton swatted the ball away and this is one of many balls.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: Andrews has had some drops and they don't get me wrong.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: He's he hasn't been good about holding on to the flip ball But he's had a lot more balls where Jackson has been trying to throw in the ball in a very tight window And he hasn't been able to body upper severs that he really has not shown a separation He's shown it past season so that was unfortunate in this case.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: It was Hamilton getting the PD
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: We then saw him try Andrews again.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: It was five yards by the left side line.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_00]: Hamilton on a Hawkins had a really good bracket on a ballpark, I should have had it thrown, but it was also incomplete.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: So that was that.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: Let me saw Huntley on the field that he was on one of his first places, first passways bottled up for a sack by a desa Isaac.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: He lost his pocket pressure on a rush that came from the left side pocket presence on a rush that came from the left side.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: I would term it as a clean up sack in this case, but still, hey, keep your motor high, keep it running and get to the quarterback.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: We saw a ratio on Benny go down on a run play and now he was up fairly quickly walked off under his own power And went to the side and I didn't see him in again after that does not mean he wasn't but, you know, the rib is obviously Effect kind of a reversal of some of their injury luck with starting with the injury to Higgins on this day
- 10:59[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we have Fanyano in a quarterback now.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: Again, he took the third team reps from Skylar Thompson, who's absent from in practice.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: He overthrew Mike Petza, 20 yards down the kind of left seam between the numbers in the left hash.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: That wobbled for an intercept.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: The ball came out, you know, funny out of his hand.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: I did not see it get deflected, but it was intercepted by Keon Martin, who continues to make plays this preseason.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: Martin and Keondri Jackson are the two defensive backs who have just been making play after play after play.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: We've also seen some good play from rivers, and that may his position on the tip chart may be really a question, which seems to be a good play from Tampa.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, it's not like there are no backups available for a loss of wiggins, but I think
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: that Wiggins is one of the players they are least in a position to lose, you know, if the wider seaver group, for example, is fairly deep in the regions who have other options, if they lost either flowers or beatmen say, but, you know, they don't have a lot of other options at corner, they're one guy who is the, you know, island number one guy is Wiggins and they really need him to be able to play again this season.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_00]: So hopefully, we're not going to get bad news tomorrow.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: I talked a little bit of a fall start in the very first play of a red zone situational drill of four seconds left down 24 to 20.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: So start, put that situation in your mind and there's no option, but to basically take whatever window is afforded to you by the defense and force the ball in there because if you don't then the game is over and you lose.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: So the very first play was a fall start and the coaches, I'm sure, love that, move
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Jackson, I'm going to close my spot in here.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Jackson then threw for Walker 20 yards between the rate hash and rate numbers and hump rate intercepted.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: It was about a three-quarter speed drill and an unfortunate that the the ball would be thrown right at his hands, but that's what happened.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson then threw to Andrews 15 yards right between the hash marks and Andrews appeared to get into the end zone on what would have been a second attempt at that same play.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_00]: Then, Huntley threw to Quave's 15 yards again, right between the hash marks, another TD, and there was really honestly no coverage or a pass for our attempted on that play, or really on the Andrews touched down either.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_00]: There was obviously by Humphrey on the interception.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: And then, Jackson, we saw a scramble right for a very big gain on first down.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: Henry was upended on a runoff right tackle by defensive tackle, David Olegiga.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: Olegiga's had a great camp by the way, but Henry was walking around for a lot of the rest of practice and appeared to be kind of upset about something.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder if it was this, because I think Olegiga's the one who upended him.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, Henry took exception to
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: after seeing Wiggins go down, you know, that could be a time when other players get started to get even more concerned about the injury mitigation techniques being used and Henry showed some education that he was upset about that.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Jackson threw to Walker for 20 yards down the left side line and Cone almost had an intersection but dropped it.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: He then threw a Hibner 10 yards by the right side line.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: One of the nice place there was Vincent riding my green to the ground.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: He kind of kind of was working on a 12 to 6 rush.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, I'm sorry, green started to beat him to the outside and so because a couple options there, you
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: kind of leaned on him though, and he is exceptional length, of course, rode him to the ground as opposed to having to just push him around the pocket with a 12 to 6 blocks.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of like a bailout methodology you would have is if you can't neutralize the guy and straight on and lock him out, then you kind of ride him around the 12 to 6.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: I call it the dial of the pocket, if you think of it as a clock, but that really nice play there by Vincent to get green to the ground.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_00]: There was a defensive offside, sort of a free play attached to us.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: They threw the flag, then they notly snapped the ball anyway.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: He threw another past of Cornelius Johnson.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: It was 10 yards by the right sideline beat rivers.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_00]: We then saw Jackson, scramble left very late, and it appeared that rivers had been in already for a sack on the play, very fast one.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: So they probably are just, you know,
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: having leaked whistle for Lamar, but he had, in general, a fairly leaked whistle I'd say for the offense in this practice.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: Then we said Jackson Mick is best through the day a 25-year past of Walker down the left sideline.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_00]: He beat TJ Tampa and that was a you know a good connection and we want to certainly see more of it what's been bothering Walker at camp at least in my estimation has been the fact that he's been generally overthrown on some deep balls and this was on target you know that probably about the shortest deep ball you can have where he beat Tampa.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: Hi folks.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: I want to take a minute to tell you about a special event that is near and dear to our heart.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_00]: Our favorite restaurant, Daniela's in Hampton, where we've been going for over 20 years is doing a special wine and food pairing site on August 19th.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_00]: This spectacular event will include an all-sardinian menu served in six courses.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_00]: each paired with a different Sardinian wine from the renowned Adarya vineyards served community style in tables with 12 to 14 guests.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_00]: If you've never been to such an event before, I can tell you more in and I look for these whenever we go on vacation and they are an absolute blast.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_00]: We feel exceptionally lucky to have Daniyela bring Sardinia to us.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: Tickets are $180 per person plus tax.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_00]: The tip is included.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: Seating is limited to 50 guests, and no more will be sold after August 16th.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: You can purchase your tickets in person through the Daniela Pasta and Pestries toast tab ordering page, or you can simply call Danielas at 443-759-930.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: They're open Tuesday through Sunday from 1139.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: Ask for the football table if you'd like to be seated with us and we'll see you there.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: When it saw Jackson run kind of a design quarterback power, run right.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: It looked like a big game, you know, it's another thing I don't expect to be gone from the Ravens offense is QB power.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_00]: I, you know, I think they're running their quarterback sneaks with Andrews because I think that's when worked the last couple of years.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: But I think they will go back to
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: QV power, you know, and the normal read option plays being significant staples within this offense, and Jackson, frankly, looks too good and too fast to throw that away.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: So, Tavius Robinson, get a sack of Huntley, not on that same play.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: Mike Green did a good job of shutting down the escape to the left side, and Tavius Robinson came in and made the play.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: So, nice play there.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: Boniano then completed a 10-yard pass between the hash marks to Serrat in front of Hawkins.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: The next play he booted left, but Mike Green was not fooled, and he pressured him to throw them all away 10 yards one circle.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, pressure by Green there probably.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: You don't really ever want to have a right hand at quarterback rolling left and trying to throw, but in particular, when you do it on the boot, that's a big risk because that right hand at quarterback has very little ability to calibrate his throw properly and to line it up, because he has to kind of short arm the ball, his shoulder is closer, he has to turn the upper side of his body.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: And it results in some very dangerous looking throws.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, if you ever watch the mile-high miracle again,
- 19:11[SPEAKER_00]: Take a look at one of the drives early in over time, I believe, and Flacco has a role left, and he threw the ball up, and the ball was intercepted, but fortunately out of bounds by one of the Denver players.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: And all I could think about is, you know, our entire experience with that would have been different, even with the Great Jacobi Jones game tie and grab, if that ball had been intercepted and the, and the, and the,
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: Procus would have had just a short drive to get a field goal off, we would have thought of that game completely different.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, don't like to see a right hand quarterback rolling left is a moral story.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: All right, then Adam Randall ran right on a play where pebbles just missed interfering in the back field.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_00]: And this is really weird, but there are a couple plays this day.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: Jenkins wants and pebbles another time with it where the defensive linemen in the back field mysteriously in pebbles case, I believe it might have been a great move in Jenkins case.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it might have been just a blown assignment, but in pebbles case, you know, he almost interfered with the hand off.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't appear like he got much of a hand on the on the on the runner.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: But on Randall, but anyway, great to see him, you know, potentially disrupting a play in the backfield.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_00]: Then we saw Jackson make another wrong, long TD run to the left side this time did not appear the good period to be a pretty much a free run You know in all honesty nobody really tries to go after the march Jackson because nobody wants to be the person to have a touch football moment with him gone wrong, and And he ran up the left side line obviously the crowd above that when as well.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: Then we saw Jackson throw to Octavian Smith about 15 yards between the hashes.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: There might have been some yak on the play, it was very close to a touchdown, not sure if it was or it wasn't, but it was one of Jackson's good throws the day.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: Then we had a loose snap, where when was it at center, he snapped at the hundly, the ball was low and Isaac and young converged to deliver the sack, he had a little bit of trouble finding the handle again and picking it up.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: It looked a little bit like the, one of the famous Lamar plays on the, on the, on the, you know, poor snap that he picked up, you can Cincinnati rolled all the way to the right sideline, stiff arms, one guy to the ground, and then throws for likely for a touchdown.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_00]: Kind of looked like that play, except for all the good stuff for the offense at the end, was missing.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: So it was just to end up being a sack there.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: All right, then, uh, a huntley through incomplete with a past afflicted by pebbles at the Linus Grammyschniester for pebbles.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he's in the back field and, and for a first day back, you know, he certainly flashed a couple of times.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_00]: Tyler Loup was seven of seven on field goals for the day all very short he's made it at least his last 16 in a row.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure if it might be more than that.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: But he's good from 33, 38, 41, 47, 35, 39 and 32.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_00]: So no big challenging 50 plus the artist but he made them all.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: It appears that the good endover end rotation on the vast majority of those.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: And most of them there was not a question on the kick being good or not.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_00]: Some of the guys on the sideline kind of thought then they had a kind of a tighter angle to the goal post Thought that one of the kicks might not be good.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: I was standing a little bit more of field I think it was pretty clearly within the operates But if usually if you're there one thing to do for us look where the ball lands in the net
- 22:37[SPEAKER_00]: Even if that doesn't tell you exactly whether the ball was end over and or not, sorry, it was a good or not, it will give you an idea on end over and rotation, and whether or not that he's still doing some things that are hooking the football.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_00]: So we don't have that direct look up the barrel or the kick, kind of thing we get from TV or so used to, but it was good in this case yet.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: It was clear he's getting that good
- 23:05[SPEAKER_00]: All right, then they put the one offensive player one defensive player on for kind of a three way competition at the end of a three play competition at the end of practice.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_00]: Now I'm going to say this, I don't think that was a great thing to do on a day where Wiggins is injured on one on one's
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: but they did run these three plays and I'll just read them off to you.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: Cornelius Johnson, sorry Ron, Feiniano hit Octavian Smith on a touchdown on the very first place.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_00]: The offense got the first one.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: Still Feiniano was out there for the last two plays, the first one.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_00]: He threw for Serrat in the left corner of the end zone, but rivers,
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: got in there and knocked the ball away for a past offense.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: The defense went wild.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think they had to win one out of three or something to win practice or something like that and the defense obviously this was looked like some sort of a clinching throw from them and not just a throw that's still alone.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_00]: And then they cleared off the field again, and we had Fagnano throw for Quavis, and the pass was defense by Yandrey Jackson.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_00]: So the defense is pretty good in these one-on-one drills in that part of the day.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think a break and we'll come back.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: We're back.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: I want to talk about the stars that the day on offense and defense.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_00]: It will start on the offense.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_00]: It is not a lot to choose from to be honest.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_00]: It was a very tough day for the offense, but Cornelius Johnson with that diving TD grab look good.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_00]: You could pick a little more Jackson per his running, but when my Marjax and had a tough day in terms of throwing three should be intersections at ended up being one I can't.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_00]: given it on a day like that.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_00]: He just wasn't sharp.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_00]: Neither of the other two quarterbacks were either.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: Tyler Luke, when seven of seven on field goals, so he's going to get my number two on this, and that's all I've got for you in terms of today's stars.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_00]: The stars on defense, Keyon Martin had an intersection.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_00]: He gets one Marlon Humphrey for the intersection, even that was in a three quarter speed, situational red zone drill.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: Ravens down more than ever,
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: and hopefully he could deliver this year and whoever the Ravens get in there with this, Wuzia Tampa or even one of the younger guys that they'll be able to fill in.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: for wiggins.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I should say the situation with wiggins makes the situation at safety all that much more necessary to have lockdown or if it's to have a couple of guys in Martin and Rivers who now are more likely to take on that slot corner roll in time.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, very important.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 25:54[SPEAKER_00]: Fortunately, both those guys are playing well.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: They both deserve to make the roster I would say at this point, and they probably both will, but you know, the team does not have the luxury, probably any more to move Marlin to the slot on dying package plays.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_00]: So it's those tend to be some of the highest leverage plays your team runs defensively.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: You want to make sure that you're solid.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_00]: and either Martin or Rippers, who might have been the answer anyway, they all was certainly are the answer now, and I imagine we'll see you know.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_00]: Hamilton at dime back as we have in the past.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_00]: And that means you're safety debt has to hold up.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: So, Kyandre Jackson has to be able to, you know, continue to prove he can play.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: And in particular, he needs to play the back in in a split field role on some of his buddies.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's played so well in camp.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think the coaches are fairly certain that he's the right guy for that.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_00]: If anything were to happen at Hamilton,
- 26:51[SPEAKER_00]: He'd be a guy who'd move up and play dime back, while the two, you know, starts and Hawkins continue to patrol the back in.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: And if that were the case, then you really need these, these other guys, the two slot corners I mentioned, rivers and martin to step in in those roles.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not like the ravens don't have answers for a lot of what they do.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's just Nate Wiggins is so far above the other corners on this team that it's a very scary injury.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully we get some good news on that going forward.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we'll talk about the podium a little bit.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_00]: So we just he meant to rub their first and this is one of the frustrating things I'm sure about being an NFL coach as soon as you get the podium and there's a big injury that day, they wanted everything about it and they want to know, you know, what does it mean to this team and he doesn't really have any information, he hasn't thought about it.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_00]: said he had no influence with himself.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: They'll evaluate it and they'll have something to borrow.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: He says he's confident in the corner back room after wiggins.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: That's coach speak.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: Now, it's truth.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_00]: I think they have some good options in the corner back room after wiggins.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_00]: Not ones that will be as good as having Nate out there.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_00]: But I think they have some good options, and in particular, if it were an injury to one of the older players, I would feel more secure about them being able to maintain a high level of play.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: Ninsure will be very tested without Wigginsuit.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_00]: Wiggins is a real weapon, and obviously he's a high value cornerback.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_00]: uh... mentor also said jackson would not play in the first preseason game uh... he hasn't ruled him out for any game but he said they're also others select players will sit and not play it all against the eagles uh... i would really imagine that would be many of the starters but we may see uh... in particular we may see adam pinter or uh... postic or
- 28:35[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, Bullock certainly, uh, and Goon, uh, will play a, say, Bullock and Goon in particular, play a significant amount of time I would expect, but he says a number of players will not play.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_00]: What question has been, will Jacobie Lane play?
- 28:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think Jacobie Lane will play a little bit in this game, but it'll be interesting to see how much they, uh, they want to get, uh, players like him and Walker and Wester, I think will play and, um,
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: Serrat in but those guys could what well make up those four could make up the wide receiver group for the, uh, first half if they sit, uh, say and beat.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's certainly a possibility.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_00]: Um, okay, Jeff's rebuk asked a very interesting question.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, before we get into that though, um, he did say the veterans were going to have to get some of their lifefire from the joint practices.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: And they have a couple of three days of them.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, um, but that's an opportunity for lifefire in a more controlled environment.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: We've seen that.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure I completely agree with that, but it's not a,
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: lifefire from the joint practices, what mostly we're going to see.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I Jeff asked him about the whether or not he's assigned a design need for challenges.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_00]: Now this just came out last couple of days that they put in a rule that would allow the head coach to designate someone else to do that for him.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think that is a fairly significant
- 30:14[SPEAKER_00]: uh... potential uh... give up of authority by a head coach and i think they're less likely to do that uh... but you never know and maybe they wanted doesn't need to talk to them on the head set about whether or not to throw a challenge and they're more likely to do it uh... but anyway the the opportunity was there for a head coach to have somebody else designated to do that
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: I talked a little bit about Travis Jones.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_00]: He said he's been shopping at the bit to get back and it was out there hitting the sled.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_00]: And didn't talk about 11 on 11s or any time table for that.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_00]: But just from watching him and watching what Jenkins went through after he came off BUP, it was a pretty darn quick move.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember, maybe it was two days.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it was even one that Jenkins was only doing sled work and then he returned to 11 on 11.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_00]: So I expect, you know, we'll see him there.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: Next up of the podium is Zach Grosse that the tight end coach, he's dressed to need not to look at the big picture for these rookie tight ends right now, but to live from play to play with full attention to the task ahead of it's a good point that you know you don't want rookie concerned about their jobs, concerned about making the roster concerned about what the target shares look like a tight end and whether or not Mark Andrews.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_00]: You know, poor camp might be impacting their ability to get a few more targets or whether Jacobi Lane might be replacing some of their targets because hey, he could do tight end like things in the middle of the field.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_00]: You just want them playing play after play and making the best play.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that he's he's done a pretty good job of centering this team and after at this tight end room.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: And after I hear quavus, smith and hybner, you know, report, I think, you know, they're in a good spot mentally about this.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_00]: So the team does need to get the tight ends of block properly.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_00]: They need to be able to win the Seek app regularly, which means those tight ends need to get their job done.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_00]: I talked about Durham's smite, said he's a professional, very experienced, and he's very happy with the way the tight end room has come together.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_00]: So I think they probably do both look up of the rookies look up to both smite and Andrews as veterans and you know, smite has a very sure way about him and I'm gonna talk about that in just a minute here.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_00]: Next up, the podium, those Josh Quavis, he was asked about run blocking and what's important about it at the NFL level and he didn't be so honest comments about really run blocking was just something that started to come to him during a senior year or before during, doesn't matter really, but
- 32:43[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's a relatively recent thing that he's developed the want to for runbocking.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_00]: His words, not mine.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_00]: And so that was pretty impressive, and I think an honest answer there.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_00]: And he mentioned two things about blocking was a one understanding the running back who was following your blocks and what their style as well as knowing what you need to do.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_00]: So those are being two things.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'd end with think about, now, what is my running back typically want to do in terms of making a line?
- 33:20[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, it's a next-level good thing if you can actually make good use of that.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_00]: To me, it's more important, fundamental things, like keeping us feet and extending against smaller defense of players that we particularly, that you might meet in level two, like linebackers, safeties, and corners, all of which,
- 33:43[SPEAKER_00]: and many he'll outlank as well.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_00]: He said that he and Matt Hibner are in this together and they've been together pretty much since the Ravens drafted them so they had that, I think they met at the combine if I'm at Reeves saying that.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about the consistency of Durham's smite as a blocker as well as, you know, wanting to be like him in terms of his base as a blocker and his ability to strike.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's two very good things to pick out.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's nice to have tight ends that are thinking about blocking in those terms and and sort of keeping your feet as you pivot through a block is something I've always liked about say I say it likely.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: During Smytha was at the podium next, he said, one thing that he'd been through a lot since he'd been through a lot, you know, played on multiple themes and played in different systems and played with, you know, new players a lot is he just hopes the rookie's, you know, in any given year in his room are going to be cool guys and he said, that's exactly what he's got in Quavus and Hibner and so he's,
- 34:41[SPEAKER_00]: positive on that.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_00]: He said, Declan Doyle gives them both technique and reasoning for what they're trying to accomplish at tight end.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_00]: So that's nice.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think that applies to both route running and blocking.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_00]: So good stuff on both of those.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_00]: And regarding blocking for either Jackson or Henry, Dermeswise said he thinks to himself, I'm not going to let that guy down.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: So, that's good.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's definitely a positive for these guys, and Lord Jackson has a living legend in terms of his on the field ability, so it's Derek Henry.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_00]: And so, it's nice to see
- 35:22[SPEAKER_00]: any kind of positive want to impact that can have for the other skill position players in particular because hopefully your offensive line men don't need any help with their want to lock it because that's that's the whole job.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_00]: But your skill position players sometimes may may try to make business decisions and hopefully the the Ravens wide receiver anti-dend Roman particular are going to be very
- 35:46[SPEAKER_00]: focused on getting the most out of the run blocking that the can.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think that that will be important in terms of making the run game as potent as it's been in the past.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about the extended plays on the Ravens.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, yeah, there's a method to the madness that the Ravens have a good foundation for the scrambled drill and how they send people in various directions.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_00]: I hear that I know there are common rules, of course, and I, in fact, ask this question of him.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, you have the common rules about, you know, closest to wider cedar to the sideline, comes back or closest for cedar to the side I should say.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_00]: comes back and kind of steps on the edge of the sideline to present himself there.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_00]: I've always felt like rules are a thing that make it easier for opposing defenses to defend an extended play.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_00]: The best situation is when you have Lamar Jackson and you can actually exploit parts of the field that you normally can't on an extended play.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_00]: For example, they always tell you back
- 36:47[SPEAKER_00]: quarterback 101, whatever, whatever level you're first playing on as don't throw back the middle of the field, particularly as a right unit quarterback rolling right or a left-hand quarterback rolling left for the same thing, but a right-hand quarterback rolling right, you don't want to throw the ball back to the middle of the field.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_00]: The march accent does that at will, you know, and he's very effective at it.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not like you could tell him don't do that.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_00]: And it's also not like you'd want to have a set of rules.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: that told you receivers, don't go to that spot because Lamar's not supposed to throw the ball there.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_00]: You want to have a, you know, melding of the mines.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_00]: You want to have a couple of different players, maybe it's statement and Andrews, maybe flowers is in that group too, and you know, could be others as well.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_00]: But that know that, hey, I want to think about where can I find Lamar space?
- 37:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I want to understand what Lamar's ability is to get the ball out and do an open space.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_00]: But I
- 37:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think having a real hard and fast set of rules would be a limitation to Lamar Jackson that would probably be unwelcome from us as fans if we saw less excitement on those extended plays.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_00]: Next last of the podium was Matt Hibner.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_00]: He said that these feels like he's drinking out of a fire hose in terms of learning the offense, but he also said that complex to us means complex to the defense as well.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_00]: And he thought that was kind of a, you know, mitigating factors not read the word.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: But something that made the, made the deal even in terms of that.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_00]: had an unusual scar on his neck as he came to the podium.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_00]: So it's some sort of almost look like he maybe got caught or like he'd had a rope burn on his neck or something and somebody asked him, you know, wow, do you pick up that scar on your neck?
- 38:31[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't know where he got any sort of a couple plays where it might have occurred.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and so I'm sure they'll go back and look at that.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and he said, just in terms of Saturday's game, he's looking forward to his first NFL game.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, and that was something that, uh, you know, obviously is a big deal for a lot of these players.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll look forward to it.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to have some episodes this week talking about what to look for in that first game.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully you'll get a listen on those.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's always some of the really fun stuff is exactly what can you, what value can you get out of watching the first game of an NFL preseason?
- 39:06[SPEAKER_00]: And there is stuff.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_00]: There's lots of stuff.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_00]: There's lots of things you can look for that make you either a more informed fan and more about the second tier of players, the guys in particular, between about 40 and 90.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_00]: That are on the team because a lot of the top guys are not going to play and then also You know, just some things about maybe watching football that you learn a little differently So you know watch post play a motion try see if you figure out what happened from that and You know, it's true a lot of the play is at a lower level and a lot of these guys You can't really tell a lot from context, but what is the only thing you got?
- 39:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's the only thing you got and you have to do the best you can to try and analyze that and
- 39:47[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you'll join us for a fair amount of that as we talk about it over the next week or so.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, thanks for listening again, said your question as a Phillips Study Mailbag at gmail.com and we'll talk to you soon.
