- 0:11[SPEAKER_01]: everyone welcome on in it is that time of the week sooners on a side podcast rolling here on this Wednesday ride chabbing hanging out with you we got the usual crew we got John Hoover up the 9-1-8 who hope you had a good steady weekend as we'll be the officially turn the page
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: hopefully add a football season into the event, except for, thankfully, Diamond's more tough.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_02]: I was gonna say, you say, out of football season, but is it really when you're replacing what three staff members, it's always football season, oh man, come on.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it's out of football season.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: NFL has done everyone's tell you how tanky that means we are out of football season.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: We got to make Carson feel Carson, how are you, you survived the fire?
- 0:56[SPEAKER_01]: Did you start the fire in Norma?
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: did not start the fire allegedly, but that was something, never seen anything like that.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: So that was, that's a way to get people interested in OU basketball, I guess, not a lot to cheer for this year.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that's the thing that can spark.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: Spark, the fan interest, but that was just remarkable.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_00]: But other than that, I'm staying safe and doing well.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: That's about the only thing that got me to lean forward watching, or you've asked while four checks notes, the last five years.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: I also got Ryan Aber with us as well.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_01]: Ryan, good to see you again.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: We did a great job on that podcast on Monday.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, mama, we'll hit it after the Mary Nutter, because there wasn't a whole lot to talk about.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_03]: We'll talk about some softball today, but oh, you wasn't really challenged much
- 1:52[SPEAKER_03]: New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, for sure.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: Bless our friends in Utah.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: They try really hard.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 1:58[SPEAKER_01]: They they try really hard.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: They put in work and we appreciate them.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get to all that.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: But the big news in Vogue of the day of the week actually is we got done podcasting last week.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: We were like, oh, I don't know what's
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: going on in the football world as monitors some stuff and then Wednesday evening Demarco Murray, the initial reports that hey not only was he an early candidate but the Kansas City Chiefs had targeted Demarco Murray, well it turns out the situation around Oklahoma's running back coach spot is just an AFC West party.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: The Sooner's Lou's one guy to the AFC West in Demarco, they decided to go raid the Las Vegas Raiders and bring in a blast from the past sort of for us.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: Dylan McCola, I think most Oklahoma fans will know him as Pops to DeSan, a day at McCola, but all in all as we were going through this John,
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's been curious you've had a couple of different hires right Jason Whitten comes in that's a guy that's obviously an if a legend about to go to the Hall of Fame Just as soon as they can officially rubber stamp all that stuff big high school Experience for him stepping up it'll be his first college job, but I think people are confident then you look at like little more Morgan coming to another
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: Power 5 blue blood power 4 massive staff at Michigan that you know all the pressure there This one's a little bit different another guy that has plenty of experience Notre Dame Indiana the chiefs for a handful of years The Raiders for one year last year wasn't his fault.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: I promise you guys But it's just kind of interesting that all the different ways that Brett Venowals and Jim nagg you have Collected staff members this off season
- 3:33[SPEAKER_02]: It is.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_02]: There's a very diverse staff in terms of experience and skill level and accomplishments.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_02]: Delamacola or Deeland McCola was a guy with raiders who when when Kubia came in and kind of cleaned house fired, you know, they fired Pete Carroll obviously.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_02]: They started firing his staff.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_02]: I mean like the first day that he came in.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_02]: I think 13 assistant coaches were fired dealing McCullough was not well enough.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: One of them
- 4:04[SPEAKER_02]: And he was one of those guys that was back held back.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_02]: And for whatever reason, everybody's got, you know, they timing and whatever works career-wise.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: But he held on for another almost two weeks from the original Clean House data a little more than a week that he was held left on the staff with the Raiders.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_02]: And so when that all shook out last Friday, I mean, last late last week, last Thursday, I think, was it Wednesday?
- 4:31[SPEAKER_02]: God, leave it with God days of gone past.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: Good night, mate.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Wednesday night.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_02]: So Thursday morning.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_02]: When that happened, um, I started looking around.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_02]: I just cut a video for YouTube.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_02]: I started looking around, started looking in some names.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_02]: And I thought,
- 4:44[SPEAKER_02]: What was the run-and-backs coach's name at Notre Dame?
- 4:47[SPEAKER_02]: I had to ask stupid chat GPT, who's the run-and-backs coach?
- 4:50[SPEAKER_02]: The previous run-and-backs coach at Notre Dame.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_02]: Do you learn McCallot?
- 4:53[SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah, let me ask my source if he would be an interesting guy because he's got to help a background.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_02]: Notre Dame Indiana.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_02]: been in the NFL work for the chiefs uh... turns out yet he would be a great candidate and uh... turns out that he was fired officially on monday and here on wednesday the uh... well we saw some stuff
- 5:17[SPEAKER_02]: On social media last night Kevin Wilson tweeted Boomer sooner.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_02]: I think he was pretty happy because he and Dylan McColle worked together at Indiana when Kevin was the head coach.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_02]: So we see it coming out last night like the next day.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_02]: after he was fired from the Raiders, boom, sooner's hired.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_02]: So how quick was that?
- 5:36[SPEAKER_02]: Was it more behind the scenes?
- 5:38[SPEAKER_02]: Was dealing with color talent, Brent?
- 5:40[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, I'm about to get lost from this job.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_02]: If you have anything, I'd like to interview you.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_02]: We'll last Brent that question at some point this spring.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, great, a great hire, a home run hire for Brent Vettables.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I know it definitely seems to check a lot of the boxes and what I like is the experience he has someone that's been in the coaching rank since 2010 at the college level previously coach high school before that he's been a lot of places obviously the professional level with the Kansas City
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: chiefs help them when a Super Bowl named the top NFL running back coach at the 2020 Combine.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean this guy everywhere he's been his running backs have been really good.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously you look at some of those stops like Indiana for example.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: They've had some really not great seasons and yes he was a part of some of those but most of those seasons they had good running back play.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, you look at the 2025 Raiders, Ashton Ginti, a lot of that can be credited to Ashton Ginti is going to be a star in this league and is a very good player, but it's clear kind of going back to what Hoof was saying if he wasn't one of those instant fires that they thought highly of him that he has the strong track record.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_00]: So I just like like the higher likely experience that he brings and it really does seem like, oh, you is three for three on their position coach.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know what those are going to be at this point, but just on surface level resume wise what they're getting.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like they've gotten three really good coaches this offseason.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'm right there with both y'all on that one.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_03]: It does seem like this is a good fit for them when you look at his experience at the college level.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_03]: He's done it at some high powered places USC Notre Dame.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_03]: Also had some success like Carson just mentioned at Indiana, including under Kevin Wilson there.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_03]: So they've got experience working together, but
- 7:32[SPEAKER_03]: I remember back when Desan McCullough first came to Oklahoma and listening to Brent Venomals talk about not only Delan McCullough but also just the family as a whole and you got the sense that this respect level for him went far beyond just sort of the coaching fraternity and
- 7:56[SPEAKER_03]: You know, professional courtesy there.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_03]: He had some some really, you know, interesting things to say about the family and the Lambacola as he, you know, worked through this.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, McCullus got an interesting story just beyond even the fact that his sons both played it owe you.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_03]: was mentored as a young man by Sherman Smith, who was played in the NFL as coach for the Seattle Seahawks I believe, and it was really close with him and then found out that Sherman Smith was actually his biological father later in life.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_03]: I believe it was a teenager when he found that out after being given up for adoption by his birth mother when he was just right when he was born.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_03]: So it's just an interesting story and you just hear a lot of really positive things.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_03]: It sort of equals not exactly the same, but a lot similar to what we heard about Jason Whitten, who he was as a person, and how that translated into what he's doing as a coach.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_03]: I think you're hearing a lot of really positive things about who Delan McCullough is as a person as much as anything.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I think, too, something that might, I don't know how much or little this contributes to anything, but it's like, DeSawn came in and was kind of cast into more of an outside lineback role than the straight-up edge russia that he was previously didn't maybe work out exactly as great as ever.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: What have wanted not that he didn't get playing time or anything like that, then he ends up, you know, transferred to Nebraska, day and never really get to shot.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that we just assume these days a lot of these spots like that, things don't work out, things like that.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh, I hate this guy or like it might be a no-hard feelings.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: We'll agree to part ways But for both your sons to come into Norman and it's not like day ended up being a four-year starter You send them off to the league or um, you know, just on impactful at times But ended up finding a role that maybe fit him a little bit better at Nebraska to still be like yeah It's a great relationship between the
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: father to play a little bit different no one that he's a coach and understands everything that a college position coach or college head coach or NFL head coach is going through when it comes to fit in a team together, but I think that's because it's not like it's a it's Steve Stutzman, Daddy Stutzman's dad was also an elite you know live-backer coach it'd be like okay well that makes sense that you know that would be a perfect fit, but I think that speaks a lot about it too and and it's
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: I can assure you guys, Bryden Carroll is an absolute moron and he was the Olin coach for the Raiders.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: So any Ashton Ginti happenings was all on Ginti and McCullot because that was a disaster.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: I would like to get the official stats you ran for 1975 this last year.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's about 1,000 yards after contact for Ashton Ginti, every single running back.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: Unlike Debarko Murray, who had basically no running backs produce anything,
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: uh... that match up to any of his stuff his best to run backs for kinnity Brooks who was an opt-out from a year prior or air gray second year got a lot better but was that a scheme fit or to mark a murder anything on the player development side that is not what uh... dealing with call that his track record up and down the uh... whether it's pro college whatever he is a player developer and that something that john i don't think i'll come as had it running back coach and tomorrow tomorrow i don't stand
- 11:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you're right.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_02]: It saw some stuff on social media earlier, believe from AJ Schulti, 16,000 yard running backs since 2011.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_02]: How's that even statistically possible?
- 11:35[SPEAKER_02]: He's got 2,000 yard running backs on a couple of teams.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_02]: That's how that's possible.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_02]: The guy is, yeah, he's coach for some great offenses, obviously.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_02]: He's also coached some really talented backs.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_02]: But let's be honest, he knows how to get a lot.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_02]: He knows how to get the most out of those guys he's working with.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, maybe the streak of since 2022, Eric Gray, since he left, there hasn't been a thousand yard restrooms.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_02]: So maybe that streak will be over.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: In a weird way, too, this is scenario, of course, and if the democracy change had happened on what I would consider the college coaching cycle of if it had happened in December or things like that, you might have been in a spot where we saw Xavier Robinson immediately post a picture as soon as it was announced that Demarco was headed to Kansas City, you saw the relationship there, all that stuff.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: Hatten, they relationship the Demarco with him, Demarco is certainly after you got through the Kamar Wheaton and Jayce McClellan, whatever that was, I'm still not sure that Kamar Wheaton's an actual person, I don't know if we've ever seen him in person play a football game, but once he got past that, Demarco's track record is recruiter, pretty good, but it's one of those things Carson where McCullell come in, he's going to have a whole season.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: To build those relationships with the guys currently in his running back room He's early enough in the 2027 cycle that this isn't going to be a total disaster if you have something there Has plenty of time to make up ground as far as people just knowing him or not knowing him in 2028 if you're gonna
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: make that position change, whether it be by Demarco taking a job or whatever, feels like in a weird way, this is a much more comfortable way to do it than if Demarco had not returned alongside like a Joe John, like a lot of people were wondering, wouldn't he be brought back or stuff like that back in December?
- 13:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it does feel that way.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: And it is big that this happened, I think, the Demarco, we've been for the NFL, Deeland now being hired after the transfer for four o'clock is getting to keep guys like Xavier Robinson, Tory, Blay Lockhoo.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: I know that we've talked about maybe their stats weren't there, but we've seen the potential that are big playability and what they can bring to this offense, getting those two guys in,
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: Still in the room having someone with as much experience as McCola.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's huge And it's also big for just the future running backs.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson Stokes 27 running back You look further down the line microroads.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's a 28 kid
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: Never, you never really know what's going to happen.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there's still almost two years until signing day for that class, but it's big just to get somebody so quickly after the Markham Relieves.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, that has to be shocking for not only the current players, but the future players too.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: So just giving them some sort of answer, like, hey, this is our new guy.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I hope I hope you resonate with you as much as the Marko did.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's big as well.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_02]: the just blog baby as in just win baby the Raiders blog they like they like this higher obviously they they had it last year with the Raiders Dillon McCullough was with
- 14:37[SPEAKER_02]: But they reported earlier, I think, yesterday, maybe day before today's Wednesday, so it might have been Tuesday.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_02]: They reported that Deelen McCollot was a finalist or was expected to get possibly a candidate for a strong candidate for the Kansas City Chiefs job that went to Demarco Murray.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_02]: So those running backs, those young running backs, those recruits that are coming in, that loved Demarco so much.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_02]: This new guy was up for the same exact job that Demarco just got.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_02]: I think they'll like him and then a quick clarification if I'm a, I think I said something about 16,000 yard rushers.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_02]: It was 16 guys who had a thousand yards of total offense as running backs for dealing with color.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_02]: So just a clarification there.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_01]: Still a big production as far as you go there and and here's the other thing too.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_01]: I want to Ryan this The as long as everything syncs up with the calendar and by Oklahoma state it's for this It's coming after portal stuff like that.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: I just really wonder how much like Deal McColle will come in and need to build those relationships with the guys in his running back room How much is he gonna be able to lean on
- 15:43[SPEAKER_01]: Jim naggies front office staff slash the recruiting staff slash hey to mark a Murray's gone and and mark a Murray is again a really good recruiter but Your offensive coordinator bill being both still there and been our buckle you're going to be able to walk down the hallway and go to bill being Boom bill like this guy is still going to be your offensive line coach to take care of the guys right in front of you I just wonder like
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: this should be enough of a built-in foundation that you can make up for the fact that you maybe don't have the longstanding relationship, and also he's someone that on top of the NFL experience, he's had experience at big-time programs, USC, pre-N-IL, pre-transfer portal, Notre Dame post-N-IL, post-transfer, but like he's existed at the top level in every version of the sport here over the last 15, 20 years.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, every indication is that he's going to be able to develop those relationships and strengthen them, but I think now as much as any time in college athletics history, it's not as much about having to, you know, have that relationship in place really strongly developed because, you know, Jim Nagy and his staff are doing so much of that.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_03]: lifting on the front end so that it can just be about you know streamlining that relationship and making sure the fits right on the back end and I think certainly the job that Jim naggy has done so far gives you an indication that you know they be in a pretty good spot recruiting
- 17:13[SPEAKER_03]: uh... you know, tomorrow, Murray, you can talk about his development uh... problems you know, all you want and certainly that's open to be criticized but recruiting was not the issue for him so uh... they're left in a pretty good position uh... looking forward like Carson said those guys some of them are you know quite a bit down the line from being able to sign but uh... you know
- 17:35[SPEAKER_03]: There's a pretty good indication that Makala is going to be able to develop those relationships, whether it's with them, or other running backs that they decided to bring in.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, RC have we mentioned that he's a Super Bowl champion that we talked about the former Kansas City Chief Super Bowl champion Angle or did you want to just did you want to just erase that from your memory and never speak of the chiefs again.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_02]: Of course.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, of course I brought it out.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think that for the sake of our comment section, I bet best I don't talk about those teams with some of the players who are now free and teams don't want to sign them because they have just sterling track records of their off the field.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but you know,
- 18:14[SPEAKER_02]: I shout out to all the chiefs fans into every I haven't been telling it I have heard you guys I have heard Ryan in a press box in a professional setting lose his ever-loving mind over something the chief did two years ago three years ago whatever that was it was hilarious he does not like the chiefs he's a- he's a- he's a- born and- will die in the wall Raiders van
- 18:38[SPEAKER_02]: Got to respect it.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_01]: Well, and you guys don't me.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_01]: I think I hate other teams more than I like my teams Which is part of the passion part of the joy.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know of joys the right word, but part of the fire that comes with it But dealing with it's a past dealing work with the I think for the most part the good correct set for that one guy that got booted off the team for He's in Cleveland wasn't Cleveland weird
- 18:58[SPEAKER_01]: And that wasn't his choice, so that's the front office.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: Again, front office, not dealing.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, let's get out of that before I get us all into a ton of trouble.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: I am.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_01]: As we podcast today, we are two months away from the spring game, which is kind of nuts because spring football.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_01]: It'll be here before we know it, and I'm very much looking forward to it.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: We, if the schedule follows as it traditionally has, we should get a chance to meet some of these new transfers, which if you haven't been following Carson's transfer talk series, just go to the website, Oklahoma Sooner's onside.com.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_01]: Carson, it was today the last day, do we have one more?
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: I've lost track as we've turned through them all.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yesterday was the last one on Tennessee Transfer Titan, Jackband or Celaire.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_01]: So he again, this is our series where Carson kind of hits up some of our colleagues across the biz and just kind of gets a little bit of a background on what kind of guy did you see had you see these guys grow How do you think they'll fit in at Oklahoma?
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's a fantastic series with great background on the transfers before we get to talk to him and they kind of get to tell their stories as far as that goes That'll be up there and it's gonna be like before you know it will be rolling out all the spring football start opens here in a week or two who are the guys that have
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: to have, got to have it, the big time stuff, the pre-spring projection isn't all that.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll be in it before you know it is again.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_01]: Just two short months here, we'll be fast-forwarded to a spring game, not a crimson combat, an actual spring game, which I know for many people just happy that it mismatchers weekend.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_01]: That's like everyone looks at it and goes, are we going heads up?
- 20:27[SPEAKER_01]: know we're not, which means cars will be happy as well as many others.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_01]: That will be good there.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: This is the rare day where sometimes when you're in this little slim part of football season, which is not a slim part of football season is who pointed out earlier.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_01]: You go, okay, what else is there to talk about?
- 20:42[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you've got a literal fire in the Lloyd Noble Center that has happened.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: You've had the Oklahoma softball team, missing extra point, otherwise they beat
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: and then had an inside the park come run as well which could be 24 depending on if you are on the more liberal part of the scoring book where if you're like Abraham who's like Ryan get that junk out of my face and I'm gonna kill you.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_01]: You've got how you baseball team went down Arlington and had one of the loudest weekends in all of college baseball and then you have a student or women's basketball team that was able to escape on Sunday with a win a really nice
- 21:24[SPEAKER_01]: as far as seatings go.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_01]: Guys, I don't know where we should start, but I am starting Carson, did you get a fire extinguisher out yourself?
- 21:35[SPEAKER_01]: Did you decide that I need to get it's far away from here as possible?
- 21:39[SPEAKER_01]: Did you think for a brief moment that the Lloyd Noble Center was just gonna be gone by the time that you were done coming that game on Saturday?
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: I think if it wasn't a media time out, then it might have been.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think that got some more eyeballs on it.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: Security wasn't front of me.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_00]: I was sitting next to Willie Gillespie from the OU daily on the base line at the time.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I just start hearing four letter words from security.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, why are people on edge?
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what's going on?
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: And then sure enough, I look up and there's just
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: flames over the concourse level, truly like I said in the intro one of the more shocking things I've seen covering sports and this is something unrelated to the game being played um so that was pretty crazy but the sprinklers got on before you know if the fire was out and the game was only paused for I don't know five or six minutes so it wasn't a lengthy delay honestly people did a pretty good job evacuating the area getting it taken care of but certainly something I probably
- 22:33[SPEAKER_00]: So it was it was something it is it's right just a second.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_03]: I Sorry Ryan.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_03]: I thought Carson would be like Charlie Steiner and that old ESPN Sports Center commercial like follow me to freedom Who knows what I'm talking about at least absolutely I just
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: This is feeling like the curtain.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a lot of cross-talk that goes on during men's basketball games and the sooner's on a side group chat.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's usually Carson or Brady's there.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_01]: They've got it.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: The last time there was some notable cross-talk Who fires in?
- 23:10[SPEAKER_01]: Great win!
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: and Vanderbilt with like three minutes left and then that was the metaphorical setting things on fire this was the rare like I'm sitting there I'm laying down I had done the softball games on Saturday I think if that fits the timeline correctly just kind of like okay we got this done yada yada yada yada I'm here for cards if you need any help proofread anything stuff like that and suddenly I am like leaning forward on the couch guys it's the first time
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: I had Falmo not being at the Louis Noble Center for an Oklahoma event because those four letter words cars and they were fire I have to assume that everyone was yelling fire fire fire fire fire because what just the
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: The biggest upset is that the sprinkler system worked.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: The sprinkler system at the Lloyd Noble Center actually was on top of it, and it was just for it to be Joe C's last official day on the job with Roger did you take an over on the 15th?
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: It, I mean, it rites itself, Carson, and thankfully for us, bum sports riders, that fire ignited a rally by the Oklahoma sooners as they shot lights out from DDP and all that fun stuff.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they really did it.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: That was, that was a really impressive.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the second half was what was most notable, but you look at Georgia shot 70% in the first half and know you still only trail by two points at half time.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_00]: Not really set them up for this three point frenzy that you saw in the second half.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: Save your brown had a good game.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_00]: Hey Davis, let all scleror so I mean, it was one of the more complete efforts you've seen from OU basketball.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_00]: There was no late game collapse, like you saw in the winning against Vanderbilt, like O-Crap.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_00]: Are they out to blow this one?
- 24:53[SPEAKER_00]: There was none of that against Georgia, which it's encouraging if nothing else, but
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: these two games in a row have made you really think that man even if oh you only took care of business against Mississippi State and South Carolina how much better they'd be sitting if they won only two or three of those games that they lost in the nine game losing streak we could be having totally different conversations about this team and
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: This team would probably be on the right side of the bubble, even if they still lost to some of those teams like Missouri, A&M, Alabama, that's going to happen in a good conference.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's just really disheartening that they not only lost to some of the better teams in the lead, but also lost to some of the worse.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_00]: And now you're seeing what this team at its best can look like, and it probably will be in vain unless they just string together wins from here until the SEC tournament, which it could happen, but I also wouldn't say it's
- 25:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that that scenario that many people have pointed out, and I don't think anyone's like, this is happening, they're just like, listen, in all fairness, if Oklahoma wins these games, and a lot of them seem to be win a bull at least, it's not like you're having to go to Tuscaloosa on Wednesday night or something like that.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: But,
- 26:05[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see if Oklahoma can hit shots on the road before we get anywhere near track and that as you saw in state as well, Oklahoma State had that big win over BYU that kind of thrust them on a bubble talk and then it was Dud Dud Dud, which is what bad basketball teams do.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_01]: This team needs to go out there on Wednesday night and show that they can shoot them all really, really, really well in Knoxville and Carson, if they go out and do that,
- 26:28[SPEAKER_01]: Then I think that might be the moment where I don't know if I'm going to back a team that lost nine straight to suddenly put together a bunch, but that for me, where it would be, I'm willing to entertain the, okay, let's go down the schedule, and look at where these games are.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_01]: If it's not, and I don't even think the close loss gets around that, but if you can go in and find a win, that's where I think you can start to do it.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: But again, like you said, because of what they didn't do earlier, it's there is no margin for error.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's got to be almost perfect rest of the way.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_00]: 100% I think all kind of hit that point of really discussing things when, if and when they can win both games this week, Tennessee and A&M, both good teams, but both flawed teams, you've seen Tennessee, they've really struggled with turnovers this year, definitely a very good defensive team, one of the better teams in the conference, but they're not what they were last here.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_00]: A&M much better than people thought they would be a new coach, fun style, but they lost for an arrow.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, I don't think either of these games will be easy, but they are both winnable and you look at the games after this.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_00]: Missouri, Texas, LSU, Auburn, all kind of, all kind of fall in that same bow, LSU, would be an easy-ish game if that were home, but that's in Baton Rouge.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_00]: So all of those seem like games that they can very much win.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_00]: If somehow they can go on the road, beat Tennessee, beating in him on Saturday, you're looking at a five and nine team in conference, and that's still not great.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_00]: There's no way around that, but if you would have told how you fans that, when they were one in nine, they'd be five and nine with wins against Vanderbilt, Georgia, Tennessee, and M. I think people would be pretty impressed with that.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: Not that you can just forget about that dreadful month of the season, but it's at least getting them back closer to the bubble.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_00]: I would assume with two wins this week, they'd be,
- 28:10[SPEAKER_00]: Next four, maybe four more after that for the bubble as far as that goes, but they'd probably climb into the low 50s up the net, at least be approaching the territory this team talent wise like we've seen should be up there.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_02]: Carson, the question I have.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_02]: You know how somebody always brings popcorn, microwave popcorn to the office and burns it and it stinks for like four days, like burn popcorn.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_02]: Did we have the smell of burn popcorn whafting through the Lloyd Noble Center?
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: No, it was, I wouldn't say it's more like burn popcorn, but there was just a burn spell that filled the arena for at least the first half.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: The smell kind of permeated by the second half, but it just, it smelled like something was burning, kind of smell to Ashie.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_02]: If you saw the video from the concourse looking kind of, looking kind of back at it, that flame when it was out, it was like touching the ceiling.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we were that close guys, seriously.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_02]: We were that close to watching that thing burn
- 29:12[SPEAKER_00]: if during a media time out, holy hell.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_00]: If OU basketball had a massive fan base that probably would have been injuries, but thankfully people have kind of checked out of OU basketball, and it wasn't overly crowded, so thankfully no injuries there were a lot of paramedics on hand just in case, but maybe that's like the silver lining of not having the best basketball arena team whatnot, so there's that at least.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_03]: I think when they're fighting for a new arena, they probably could have gone other ways than to burn Lloyd Novel to the ground or try to burn Lloyd Novel to the ground to get there, but that's just me.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: I'm happiest for, and this might be something for five people.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm happiest for our proud Joe Jr. because he has a thread of incriminating tweets.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: If there had been actual damage, we would have had to locate where Joe Jr. was in the Louisville Center because he has threatened before.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: Precisiously to burn Lloyd Noble down and he was as soon as it was like first off.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god Secondly Carson, are you good?
- 30:17[SPEAKER_01]: They're like cars to go up there and make sure and then it was like I wonder what two juniors doing right now because if he wasn't heavily involved in this I was gonna be very, very disappointed if nothing else The good news for what Oklahoma has done it gets better belt and against Georgia and we'll see what that looks like on Wednesday night against Tennessee is
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: Buddy heel being honored on Saturday night.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: If nothing else, the team itself who still put it all to work, credit them for not packing up and in, but maybe it, let's everyone breathe for a moment so that Buddy heel is not going to be honored in the midst of like a massive school record losing streak or something like that.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: It'll be interesting, or it'll be fun at least to get everybody back together.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: I know a big part of this, a big part of the planning was picking out that buddy could do it.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_01]: You think I traded?
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: And thankfully, it's an off night for the Ana Hawk, so that could have been a no kidding.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_01]: The expectation is for a majority, if not all of that final four team to be back in.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_01]: And Avery, I know that, uh,
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: Long was always great for us to cover just because of how open he was with everything and just how good of a dude not not not the anyone else is it but like lawn is just the Pinnacle of good dudes in the coaching profession and it's I hope that lawn gets back out there because it'll be good to see the the whole squad back at the LNC the last group that really had the LNC on fire and not a literal way
- 31:42[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it really will be and that was a really fun team to cover and buddy healed was just an incredible player to cover both for what he was able to do on the floor, but also just personality wise.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, people talk about women's his deal and his smile lighten up things.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_03]: But he's that's the same way in a lot of ways and and also made the commitment
- 32:07[SPEAKER_03]: When he could have left after his junior year, nobody would have batted an eye, but he decided to come back, stay with that core of players, with Jordan Woodard, with Ryan Spangler, with Isaiah Cousins, and try to take that team a little bit further, and they were able to do that to go to the final four in 2016.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_03]: some just incredible moments from buddy healed.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_03]: I think the one that stands out to me is got to be that was a double overtime trip over time game in Lawrence, the best college basketball game I've ever seen, the best regular season college basketball game in a long, long time.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_03]: and even though you came out on the losing side of that buddy healed walked out of there and you knew that was the dude from that game and that's just who he was during his entire time and like you mentioned Ryan the atmosphere when buddy got going was just even in a place like LNC that can drown out crowd noise and things like that it was still rocking in there when
- 33:17[SPEAKER_02]: that was oh use lawns only chance to win I think in Lawrence was it and it was one of those half-court buzzer beaters to win the game replay the video and there was no good by like one billionth of a second hard-breaking loss hey my suggestion for the folks at the LNC get the popcorn popped that morning before buddy shows up don't start popping it during the game
- 33:45[SPEAKER_02]: Man, probably for the best probably got some people on my street literally all my street We've got some people who are like the guys been arrested like twice He's he's gone seriously.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_02]: He's gone in the hole for like 12 months at a time The house caught on fire one time.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_02]: They like we think they're like crack lords or something or met lords or something And they're just seriously everybody on the in the neighborhood is like
- 34:09[SPEAKER_02]: like those people on the end of the street.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_02]: I wonder if the SEC right now when they saw that fire going they're just going the SEC's just going oh there goes the property values
- 34:19[SPEAKER_03]: By the way, two things.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_03]: One, just looking at the stat line from that game is just incredible for Buddy Hield.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_03]: That one in Kansas that we talked about.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_03]: 46 points, it was a triple overtime game.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_03]: 46 points, 13 to 23 overall from the field, eight of 15 on three pointers with eight rebounds, seven assists, just five turnovers for him.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_03]: It was just phenomenal.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_03]: But of course, if Kadeem Latin could make a free throw, I was about to say, never would have been in over time to begin with.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_01]: I was about to say, I need you to pull up and give me Kadeem Latin's free throw slash line there.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_01]: Now, granted, for the sport of college basketball, Kadeem Latin just makes free throws.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_01]: It just becomes a holy crap, Oklahoma one in the fog, which doesn't happen, but it doesn't become the legendary 5 million overtime performance or things like that.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_03]: But, you know, one is the answer.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, that would have been, I mean, buddy had a bunch of that game.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_01]: There was the game at Lloyd Noble Center against Texas that was basically buzzer Peter.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_03]: There was the heave at the big 12 tournament against, was that what Junior didn't count, but was just one of those crazy moments.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you have the way that they just beat Villanova at the was it pro harbour weekend that Yeah, it was yeah, yeah, and then to come back through and then it did not go well, but you go with the that run at Oklahoma City, they head out to and I'm and took out what was that A&M and Oregon back to back games.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Dylan.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_01]: This is Oregon.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's it's just crazy to see
- 35:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it wasn't just a Dylan Brookers organ.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_01]: It was a Dylan Brookers organ which he set on fire and he set them on fire throughout the tournament.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_01]: So buddy, he certainly one of the above figures in Oklahoma basketball and it would be good to see him and catch up on Saturday night.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_01]: Rook on the other side of the Louis Noble Center for we get to the diamond sports.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_01]: Good weekend for Oklahoma.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_01]: Touch and go against Florida, but they got the win, and that's all that kind of really mattered there.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_01]: And then as we know that the NCAA Tournament Committee comes out and starts to publish their top 16 rankings as of right now, Oklahoma got the news that they were still hanging on.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_01]: Two at top four seed as the number 16 team in the country, which meant if the season ended today, they would host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament and Norman did
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: It was truly a team victory.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_01]: Virwhals was really good early, turns her ankle, Alia Chavez takes over late, Reagan Beerus, she's a great baseline of play on top of maybe a NCAA record of reviews for unabsorbed contact.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_01]: We just need to bend that rule, please, and thank you.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_01]: But a really, really good show and for the sooner women is there.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of the same spot they were last year where they needed to enter the SEC tournament on a bit of a win streak.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was a seven game streak that they put together.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_01]: If Oklahoma can take care of
- 37:17[SPEAKER_01]: Georgia tomorrow night and then Tennessee in the pink out game on Sunday.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_01]: They have a chance to put together a six game win streak here headed into the SEC tournament.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and this is a really critical week for that.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_03]: If they're able to get past this, I think they'll certainly enter the SEC tournament with some big time momentum and with a excellent chance to host.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_03]: uh but uh the committee clearly gives a lot of credence to that win over South Carolina.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_03]: I think that that's what's lifted them into that place and if they're just able to maintain at this point it will be interesting to see uh just how mobile patent verholstice is.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_03]: She came back into the game and made some big shots, had a big time block after re-intering as well, but she was clearly bothered by the ankle and sometimes you can come back in and be alright initially and then you sit down and the swelling starts coming up in a couple of days later, you're in worship, then you were immediately following the injury.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_03]: So that'll be
- 38:32[SPEAKER_03]: uh... it has been fantastic for them she's been a studying influence uh... she's been able to uh... you know whether some of the storms that you know a leach of as a struggle at times we've seen zyvans struggle but payton verals has been really steady uh... during scc play after struggling a little bit early in the season in his key and then uh... yet Reagan beers it just seemed like they were reviewing every time
- 39:02[SPEAKER_03]: With any player on either team, they were going to review it for, you know, unobserved contact because it did seem like it was about an hour and a half so worth a review is in that one.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they were running late all thanks to reviews on writing, which I think every single one of them came back there just like, yeah, she just she puts her arm out.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_01]: She posts up like a post player does and that is what we call that basketball I believe is is what that is, but huge for you.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_01]: They have such a weird resume of going into that Alabama game only six losses, but three and six in quad one games all six those losses coming in teams that are top.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_01]: 18 or 20 teams.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_01]: When you do with that, but if you add that Alabama game, certainly Georgia and Tennessee, that would be another couple of big time opportunities, then I think that rounds out the resume and it's like, yeah, they're not a one-seater or a two-seed, but no one's going to have that conversation about hosting here in a couple of weeks.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, Georgia, Georgia is going to be a really interesting game, because Georgia's jumped up and bit a couple of scenes act.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_03]: They just beat Vandy.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_03]: in an incredible win for them.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_03]: They beat Kentucky earlier than the year.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_03]: So these next two games are going to be key for what happens to them come selection Sunday.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_01]: certainly will be locked in with that as well as head over to the diamond sports and let's head to Arlington first because we had talked about skip johnson being excited about some of these newcomers uh we we had talked about kind of the quiet confidence and hey when that SEC preseason pull comes out no one enormous to concern about it
- 40:33[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think anyone was expecting though the weekend that Oklahoma actually did have down at the Shriner's Children's Classic in Arlington, they come out and whip everybody, beat the heck out of tech, beat Oklahoma State, get TCU and run a real fashion, and they even flopped the entire line up around for what I thought was going to be a really, really tough spot after
- 40:54[SPEAKER_01]: as good a weekend as you could have had to come around and take on to Mexico State, a really weird marathon first couple of innings, a potentially drunk guy on the ESPN Plus broadcast that we got that sorted out, Oklahoma got things sorted out, the game got moving and it ends up being
- 41:10[SPEAKER_01]: a four and a week in with the three big ones, Oklahoma winning the the Triner Showdowns Classic.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: Carson, I mean, it it felt like you wanted power, you got power, you wanted Oklahoma's ability of manufacturers, you got that, but most importantly, these sooner has got three big time showings in their three pair of starters, whether it be a new transfer coming in, a guy that's coming into his second year, trying to make that thing happen, or certainly a freshman given it to go, Oklahoma was shoved down there at
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: You're muted, my friend.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_00]: I am muted, sorry about that.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure what else you could have wanted from opening weekend for this team.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, playing against three really strong squads.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, Texas Tech might not be what they used to be, but that's still a very talented team.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_00]: Along with Oklahoma State and TCU, TCU widely expected to be a top 10 squad this year.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_00]: The pitching was great.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_00]: Cameron Johnson leading things off in the L.J.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_00]: Merit Curious, Corridor,
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: Three really good starts from three newcomers for this team.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_00]: That's encouraging.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_00]: The bats were fantastic, whether that's dating with chance, Kyle Branch, so many different guys, both returners, newcomers, there were a lot of different contributors, one through nine, on all four days.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: So you've got to like that too, just the depth really shine.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, it's more of a midweek style game when that was originally supposed to be on Tuesday, and Norman, instead, it's Monday and Arlington against New Mexico State, and that was a weird game.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_00]: OU commits three errors in the field.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_00]: The bats are as consistent.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_00]: They scored 10 runs.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think they only got six or seven hits.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_00]: So it wasn't just like they were slugging at that game, but the fact that they were still able to get 10,
- 42:50[SPEAKER_00]: When the game by four runs against one of usually a good mid-major team in the Mexico state, Jerry's kind of out on how they'll be this year, but that's usually a quality mid-major program.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_00]: Starting this for a note with three really good wins.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like I said, you can't ask for much more.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's arguably the best start that anyone's gotten off to in college baseball.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, you see LSU Texas, A&M, a bunch of other SEC schools putting up 20 runs and some games.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_00]: Look at who they played, they played against UC Davis, make me state whatever the team that they might have played is.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_00]: Does it match up with TCU or qualms state Texas tech?
- 43:27[SPEAKER_00]: Winning in as dominant, fashion as they did in Arlington against teams like that.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_00]: it's it's really encouraging obviously it's it's a 50 plus game season there are going to be some losses this is not the oh use going 50 and oh podcast or anything like that but you've got to be encouraged with what you saw from we can one of who you baseball
- 43:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's one of the things that, you know, let's give a talk about.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_01]: They knew they needed to add a little bit more power.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't want to abandon what they've been offensively, but they need to add a little bit more.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_01]: I've got to see that on display.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: And now you've got a 17 game home stand starting this Friday, the debut of some of the new features at it, Kimory, family stadium.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: The bullpins moving out to the outfield things like that.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_01]: But 17 games, that spans all the way into the opening week in the SEC play as well.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_01]: It gets to basically just park it in Norman and continue to build and build and build.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited because as you said, Carson, there are a lot of places.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_01]: If you look up D1 baseball anywhere, baseball, America, Oklahoma, lead for the most part.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_01]: The weekend wrap up as far as statement week in and week in number one.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_01]: Now let's see what that continues to grow with it.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_01]: And that's a team two of that.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure a bunch of club houses across country deal with this, but when we talk to skip on Thursday, he just flat out said, hey, we got some flu kind of going through the locker room as well.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: So I didn't know if they knew exactly 100% of animals could be able to go.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_01]: So you hope that means it's a group that's only going to get better as they continue to.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_01]: expand and grow through this early season, and we saw Weekend 1 to Weekend 2 down in last Cruces, a new tip for the softball, situation, aber, the quick stop through New Mexico, one game, in El Paso, let's see, how do we say this nicely?
- 45:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really glad that they're playing actual teams this weekend because the opponents on offer last weekend were absolutely dreadful, but
- 45:12[SPEAKER_01]: You still have to be really good to go hit 23 homerons at an inside the park home run to the school or what was it what they went 96 to Six or was it 93 to six something like that the one 91 to nine yeah, there we go, there we go 91 to nine didn't have her in front of me cross the entire weekend that only happens if you are not just good But dominant despite you could play anybody if you put up 91 runs in five games.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_01]: You had a good weekend
- 45:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and a couple of things, let's just start with a 34-o game against UTEP just because that's the one that sort of leaps off the page at, yeah.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_03]: In the first inning, they score without home runs, just a lot of hits and singles doubles, drop, drew some walks, I think that's maybe one of the strengths of this team is their ability to be patient and take walks when they're throwing at them.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_03]: and then have the massive ending in the middle that's just you know home run after home run and then they come back in the fifth when the game is is over it's just about you know getting through the top of the inning so you can get through the bottom of the inning and uh
- 46:22[SPEAKER_03]: head on home after the weekend, and it was just a combination of those things.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_03]: It was walk, single walk, grand slam, single walk, walk, grand slam.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_03]: It was just incredible the depth of this lineup.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_03]: I'm actually, you know, have a story about that this afternoon.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_03]: Just the depth of this lineup and the
- 46:48[SPEAKER_03]: because, you know, in the the modern era in I L things like this, this is what Patty talked about yesterday on Tuesday with us that you have to play players maybe earlier than you would, you know, a couple of years ago.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_03]: Because they can go transfer immediately and place somewhere else, but Those players are taking advantage of it.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_03]: Alyssa Parker has been fantastic.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna write about her pretty soon She's been doing a little bit of everything
- 47:18[SPEAKER_03]: You know, Kindle Wells obviously had a lot of big moments that first weekend, and then Kai Miner has just been steady hitting was a 520 so far for her, and then you have moments players that maybe you don't expect.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_03]: We got to see, you know, T.M.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_03]: Aloy, do some good things.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_03]: over the weekend and then Cheney Helton delivers probably the the moment of the weekend with her first collegiate home run.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_03]: So just the the embarrassment of riches on the offensive side for Oklahoma is just incredible at this point.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that no one was happier for Cheney than like the rest of the team.
- 47:57[SPEAKER_01]: We talked to Nelly on Monday on radio and she was like, I think I cried.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_01]: She described it as a top ten moment of her life, of Nelly's life, of Cheney hitting the home run just because of all the work that she puts in.
- 48:07[SPEAKER_01]: Patty was very excited as well.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_01]: And that this is what I think is maybe even the 2024 offenses.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_01]: Abraham, it got into like, hey, here's the nine that we think are going to star and you might have one or two options to change things.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_01]: Right now, we'll find out a lot more this weekend as they head down to the merry note.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get to that here in a second that Bella Emmerling comes in and has her three home run and performance immediately.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_01]: I thought she had good at bats in Arizona as well.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_01]: That opening weekend, you mentioned Alyssa Parker.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_01]: Sydney Barker is yet to like nail-on where exactly she's gonna be as much as we ever were Sydney Barker might just play every position except maybe catch her before the years gone that's something that you feel really good about you mentioned to you well it feels like right now it's not a if patty gas so started the series against Texas tomorrow she only feels controlled
- 48:54[SPEAKER_01]: Putting tin players in the batter's box and having a couple of chains.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like legitimately right now She could bring up 13 14 bats and feel pretty good about the at bats.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see if that can sustain throughout the year Before you to the right out of real quick.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_01]: I do think the big thing from yesterday question that you asked I know a lot of people been going
- 49:14[SPEAKER_01]: What's been up with this start with Kirsten Deals?
- 49:16[SPEAKER_01]: It was kind of touching go.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_01]: She got tattooed against just bad softball teams as past weekend.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_01]: Sounds like that it might be Coach Rocha, that has come in from, I think Patty described it as her armchair or her liner basically in the living room that might have come in with a little bit of fix for KD.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it was a really interesting answer to hear her talk about some of the changes.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_03]: Jen Rocha was watching at home.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_03]: She's away from the team on medical leave, dealing with a medical issue, and picked up something mechanically in Kirsten deals delivery that maybe wasn't clicking, wasn't
- 50:03[SPEAKER_03]: pitch with the effectiveness that we've seen from her, you know, so often over the last couple of years because she hasn't been the ace for this team ever, but she's been a steady presence and, you know, so far this season has not been that at all.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_03]: She struggled in every single one of her appearances to this point.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_03]: And she said that she believes in
- 50:27[SPEAKER_03]: Just as a person and the way that she's handled things throughout her career, but also she felt like Jen Roach's observation the other day may have unlocked something with Kirsten Deal and get her back rolling because they really need her.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_03]: We've seen some great things out of Audrey Lowery.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_03]: Miley Wachino was really good.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_03]: Last weekend we'll see how she handles the significant step up and competition this week.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_03]: There, Sydney Burzon still sort of getting going after having some off-season health issues there, so they're been pretty patient with her, bringing her
- 51:12[SPEAKER_03]: And she doesn't have to be a massive piece, but they need her to be a solid contributor in that pitching group if they're going to get where they need to be.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_01]: I like to project that Kirsten deals throw six shutout innings on the Saturday game against Arkansas.
- 51:28[SPEAKER_01]: It loves, that's just like eight days, six shutouts, and that regards about good or bad it goes between now.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_01]: That's probably what's going to happen.
- 51:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm curious, Patty said that, Gene Rocha,
- 51:40[SPEAKER_01]: kind of, she said that she waits for us to come to her.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_01]: So as Patty's call in Coach Roach here and just like, hey, how you feeling?
- 51:48[SPEAKER_01]: Things are good?
- 51:49[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think of the end of that phone call?
- 51:50[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, hey, do you have two minutes coach?
- 51:53[SPEAKER_01]: I noticed something or or do you think that Patty's going like,
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, won't you see?
- 51:58[SPEAKER_01]: Because I can understand her like maybe not texting Carly Keating in the dugout Immediately be like, hey, you need to fix this, but I was kind of curious of the co-character Well, I have you, do you do you think that you could pass this along to Kirsten, maybe?
- 52:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, my guess is that they called it to catch up, but also patties like, hey, you know, did you watch this weekend or, you know, what do you think?
- 52:21[SPEAKER_03]: And then that that comes out of it there, but it was, it was fascinating hearing Patty Gassau describe that.
- 52:29[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be interesting talking to Kirsten, you know, the next time that we do about that.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_03]: She's usually really good talking about her teammates and other players.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes herself, not so much, but we'll see what she has to say about that.
- 52:43[SPEAKER_03]: Because Pattingesso seemed really confident that they could get her back on track fairly quickly after the struggles that she's had so far.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_01]: Good to know, Jim Roach, I will be fighting the same thing that you and I are fighting this week was not necessarily fighting, but just we're all on the flow game this weekend Thursday double header, oh you'll take on Cal State Fullerton that is scheduled to start at 730.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's the Mary Nutter you guys know this.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_01]: Games going all day long.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_01]: Let's hope that thing starts at 7.30.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: I can tell you I'm not doing the late game on Thursday That's going to be all aver is oh, you will turn around and take on seeing Diego stay.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_03]: That's what say it's going to be going to be different not being in Yes, it's a little city this time around.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_03]: I was there a couple years ago and it was just an incredible event for sure And it's one of the most beautiful places on earth, so
- 53:32[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we'll be doing it.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_01]: You can come hang out on my couch.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it's the most beautiful place on earth, but I need some snacks or something like that.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_01]: Friday, they'll come back around.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_01]: They'll take on Duke at three o'clock.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_01]: That'll be a really, really good game.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_01]: Duke had a nice productive weekend out at Clearwater.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_01]: They got Long Beach State and Cal on Saturday, Long Beach State, Paddy's on the water, Cal.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what to expect.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_01]: They kind of cleaned house with their coaching staff and we'll see what the new version of cow looks like and then get away day on Sunday 11 a.m. Oh, you will take on a washing tin.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_01]: And if you know, you know, Patty Gatso likes beating tar.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_01]: That is that would be what she would like to do.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see if Oklahoma can make that thing.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_01]: happen, but a much more intriguing weekend.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_01]: And A were an eye promise.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_01]: We will be here on Monday, podcasting about it.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_01]: That is on me.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_01]: And a little bit on the schedule.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely on me.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_01]: We promise peaky server will be able to recap it all on Monday here in your podcast.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_01]: We just talked about it last week.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_01]: I apologize.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_01]: That is on.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_01]: me a hundred percent.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_01]: But until we get through that, women's gym on Friday, they got a 1v2 with LSU that I know that they've talked about the lower bowl being sold out.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see if KJ can like it's her full-on sellout that she wants there.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_01]: Otherwise, anything else going on in the early world that we missed on just because nobody's perfect as we have all seen by my inability to recognize that a day is Monday to do a podcast.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just quick note that tweet that I put out,
- 54:57[SPEAKER_02]: a couple nights ago about the sooners being having one, including Joke Stiglione's final week as the athletic director.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_02]: 13 consecutive sporting events this school won.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_02]: Softball, baseball, two gymnastics, men's gymnastics, basketball, got red hot, women's basketball, unbelievable.
- 55:15[SPEAKER_02]: 13 in a row.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_02]: Um, I'm trying to think the last loss was last Monday, have they lost since?
- 55:20[SPEAKER_02]: I haven't had that.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_01]: So, not that I know unless there's something.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_02]: Baseball has a played, softball has a played.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_02]: So, anyway, the streak is alive, as far as we know.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_02]: The only one that has lost in that week, I shouldn't say everybody wrestling dropped a couple of tools.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_01]: The... Well, that, let's go after them.
- 55:41[SPEAKER_02]: You've got to go out on top, basically.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was gonna say, good luck to Ryan, if you want to fix a program, I'd go basketball over wrestling first, Raj, but he could have fun, enjoy it, no pressure for Roger Didney, step it in as down your official acting, act like dr. All right, well, that'll do it.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_01]: Abraham and I will be back for real this time on Monday, my bad again.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_01]: The whole crew will be back on Wednesday, we'll get Brady out of his middle earth bunker.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_01]: I might just force him on somewhere and be like, hey, man, I'll do his talk whether she's come tell us about New Zealand, because that seemed like way more fun than.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, so the stuff going on right here, but we will rattle on next week here on the Sooners on S.I.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_01]: Podcast.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_01]: Big thank you to Abraham to Carson Field, John Hoover, and thank you for putting up with me as always with us guys next week.
