- 0:40Speaker 1: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. We'll back at our
- 0:43Speaker 1: normal time on a Tuesday here at Jillette Stadium. It's Deuce,
- 0:47Speaker 1: it's Tamara, it's Evan, it's Paul, it's me, It's Matt
- 0:51Speaker 1: and Nabooth and everyone just came off the practice fields.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Number of practice six, day six on a loose track.
- 1:00Speaker 1: They went from pads to shells today, which was a
- 1:03Speaker 1: little surprising. Back a little bit wich. Probably means they'll
- 1:06Speaker 1: be back in pads tomorrow. I'm just guessing.
- 1:08Speaker 5: Fred was not happy.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Seven. What are we doing here?
- 1:12Speaker 6: I had to like squit my eyes and I'm like,
- 1:14Speaker 6: do they not have them full pads?
- 1:16Speaker 3: I had to feel like I was seeing something.
- 1:18Speaker 1: But they were back at it today. They're supposed to
- 1:20Speaker 1: be around noon, but they changed it yesterday to a
- 1:23Speaker 1: morning practice.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Beyonce is here, Beyonce.
- 1:26Speaker 1: What's that beyond? Okay, beehive?
- 1:29Speaker 3: Beyonce?
- 1:31Speaker 1: All right, the beehive is attacking, but she's here tonight.
- 1:36Speaker 1: So I don't know if that's why they moved it
- 1:38Speaker 1: back up to the morning. I don't know why they
- 1:39Speaker 1: moved it in the afternoon to begin with. But anyway, yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 1: so what do we think?
- 1:47Speaker 7: All Right, everyone's looking at me.
- 1:49Speaker 5: I thought it was okay today.
- 1:50Speaker 7: I mean, I think it's more of the same it's been,
- 1:52Speaker 7: you know, kind of spotty on offense. Take from that
- 1:54Speaker 7: what you will. Defense. Those says, you know, look pretty
- 1:57Speaker 7: good a couple, you know, I think notable plays to
- 2:00Speaker 7: a Parker can test to catch them on the sideline,
- 2:02Speaker 7: A miss deep ball to Kendrick Bourne, pretty much touchdown
- 2:05Speaker 7: to Hunter Henry. But you know that that was kind
- 2:08Speaker 7: of a lot of screens, A lot of screens.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Friends of the show, Mike Giardi, yesterday.
- 2:13Speaker 8: We got headlines, we got tweets.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Stunk I told him describing I told you were a
- 2:18Speaker 5: lot more pleasant as a TV personality. I was a writer.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Wow, he really he did not have a high
- 2:24Speaker 1: opinion of the Patriots wide receiving.
- 2:26Speaker 5: Yeah, and just in talking to him a little bit,
- 2:28Speaker 5: the only thing he said he would probably pull back on,
- 2:30Speaker 5: like the whole categorizing of all the receivers. He said,
- 2:33Speaker 5: like Juju's a two, you know, Like he was like
- 2:36Speaker 5: he felt like he went a little too far with it.
- 2:38Speaker 5: But overall, those guys that had a hard time getting
- 2:42Speaker 5: open on a consistent basis. The best player that Mike
- 2:44Speaker 5: talked about today, Christian Gonzalez was all over Parker. Everything
- 2:48Speaker 5: else was with screens, check downs, dump offs, Like they
- 2:51Speaker 5: don't really have many opportunities to get the ball downfield.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And that's because they're just not doing it. Guys aren't
- 2:58Speaker 1: getting open.
- 3:00Speaker 5: I think that guys are having trouble getting open, and
- 3:02Speaker 5: I think the timing's been off. I thought there was
- 3:04Speaker 5: a play in seven on sevens. Evan will remember it
- 3:09Speaker 5: probably better than I will, But Marcus Jones came off,
- 3:12Speaker 5: his guy came underneath. I think Juju and almost he
- 3:16Speaker 5: probably should have picked off a pass. Mack had no idea.
- 3:18Speaker 5: He was there and I think the throw was late.
- 3:20Speaker 5: I thought Juju was open on that play. I just
- 3:23Speaker 5: think the timing was off. I mean it's seven on seven,
- 3:26Speaker 5: so you can't say, well, he was dealing with the rush,
- 3:29Speaker 5: you know. So I just think that they're just not
- 3:31Speaker 5: quite there.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I would do at least one drill a day for
- 3:34Speaker 1: the next week where you got four seconds.
- 3:38Speaker 8: That quarterback.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Off the top rope.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It makes good.
- 3:44Speaker 5: Thing went out on TV.
- 3:45Speaker 1: He just knocked me over something else. Maybe it's not
- 3:47Speaker 1: even four seconds. Maybe it's three seconds where you have
- 3:50Speaker 1: to get rid of the ball. I don't care if
- 3:52Speaker 1: it gets intercepted, but you have to make a decision
- 3:55Speaker 1: within three seconds. And every day there's a drill just that,
- 4:00Speaker 1: and it's eleven on eleven, you know, with not you know,
- 4:04Speaker 1: against air I'm talking about with a pass rush. Just
- 4:08Speaker 1: we've got to get into the habit of being decisive.
- 4:11Speaker 6: I think is it difficult when you're kind of installing
- 4:15Speaker 6: a new offense. And so it's like, say, if Bill
- 4:18Speaker 6: O'Brien was here last year, then for the most part,
- 4:21Speaker 6: you wouldn't be installing anything or trying to like teach anything.
- 4:23Speaker 6: You're kind of just in that part where you're able
- 4:26Speaker 6: to actually run through plays. But now I feel like
- 4:27Speaker 6: they're trying to run through plays and also teach them
- 4:29Speaker 6: at the same time.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Maybe, but still a play is designed to go a
- 4:33Speaker 1: certain way. Let's run the play and throw it where
- 4:36Speaker 1: it's supposed to be and if if it gets picked
- 4:38Speaker 1: off or the guys, that's not the quarterback's fault, you know.
- 4:43Speaker 7: I just I mean, I think they've been in the
- 4:45Speaker 7: red zone a lot and there hasn't been a lot
- 4:47Speaker 7: of opportunity to push the ball down the field. There
- 4:49Speaker 7: was a little bit of it today, talked about it
- 4:51Speaker 7: on the wrap up show yesterday. I want to see
- 4:53Speaker 7: more of it, but you know, at a certain point,
- 4:55Speaker 7: it's just they haven't really executed, you know, an intermediate
- 4:59Speaker 7: to deep pass game. They haven't really well that's the
- 5:01Speaker 7: thing attempted it.
- 5:02Speaker 1: That's kind of yes, exactly, I don't think they've worked
- 5:05Speaker 1: really on that yet, right.
- 5:06Speaker 7: Which is you know, and that's where you know, chick
- 5:08Speaker 7: stick the deep ball, but.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Walk.
- 5:11Speaker 7: Yeah, And that's so that's where I'm kind of stuck,
- 5:13Speaker 7: is you know, Look, you want to acknowledge, as Tamara said,
- 5:16Speaker 7: like new offense and they're starting in the red zone
- 5:18Speaker 7: and things are tough, and it's it should be hard
- 5:20Speaker 7: on them, but also at a certain point, like six
- 5:24Speaker 7: days in, we got to start to make some play soon.
- 5:26Speaker 7: And that's what I think have been has been lacking.
- 5:28Speaker 7: There's just has been a lack of exciting places. You
- 5:30Speaker 7: talk about Douglas, he jumps off the field with how
- 5:33Speaker 7: athletic he is. Is that, you know, an indictment kind
- 5:35Speaker 7: of on what they have because he's quick, Like you know,
- 5:38Speaker 7: there there aren't any like Juju Park. None of those
- 5:41Speaker 7: guys look like he looks on the field, So you
- 5:44Speaker 7: know that that thoes are kind of all the fact
- 5:46Speaker 7: that you're trying to balance right now as you try
- 5:48Speaker 7: to make, you know, reasonable assessment of what they're doing.
- 5:51Speaker 6: Did you did you make anything of how everyone keeps
- 5:53Speaker 6: asking if there's a quarterback competition?
- 5:56Speaker 1: Is that?
- 5:56Speaker 6: Is this more people trying to make a headline or
- 6:01Speaker 6: do you think there's something?
- 6:01Speaker 7: I think they just want Bill to say Mac is
- 6:03Speaker 7: the starter. Rolling with that, I think's what they want.
- 6:05Speaker 5: I totally agree everybody's setting him up to just say
- 6:07Speaker 5: Mac is the star.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I also think it's wishful thinking on a lot of
- 6:10Speaker 1: people's part. I think they want a quarterback, they want
- 6:13Speaker 1: the story.
- 6:13Speaker 5: I'm with Mike. I agree with you, Mike. I think
- 6:16Speaker 5: they want him to say definitively Mac is the starter,
- 6:19Speaker 5: and they don't understand why he won't because it's clear
- 6:23Speaker 5: I'm going to want I'm gonna just like dark Evan
- 6:25Speaker 5: give the Florida Evan in a second, because I think
- 6:27Speaker 5: I might be very much entertained by this rank that's coming.
- 6:30Speaker 1: We have a teapot.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Full disclosure, Mike and Evan were up on the rams today.
- 6:34Speaker 5: I stayed down in the know it all tents, so
- 6:36Speaker 5: I am not privy to this rant. But I think
- 6:38Speaker 5: there's one coming, just based on the snark and his.
- 6:41Speaker 7: Well, well, can I preface it as just ten thirty
- 6:43Speaker 7: four practice six? Gimme ZAPPI was the quote.
- 6:48Speaker 5: So I really, if you're watching practice, there's no quarterback
- 6:53Speaker 5: like Mac is the starter, right, So I don't think
- 6:56Speaker 5: anybody wants there to be a controversy. I think everybody
- 6:59Speaker 5: wants him to say what everybody is seeing, and they
- 7:03Speaker 5: won't do it because he won't do it.
- 7:05Speaker 1: For whatever reason, I think some people want it, but anyway.
- 7:08Speaker 8: I think it's because he's watching practice and I gotta
- 7:11Speaker 8: be honest, I they're I don't want to say this
- 7:16Speaker 8: like too strongly because I don't. It's We're a week
- 7:20Speaker 8: into this, so we got a long way to go.
- 7:23Speaker 8: Maybe I'm a little hot, you know, maybe I'm a
- 7:24Speaker 8: little tired from six am mornings.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 7:27Speaker 8: Not no excuses, you know, for me either. But here's
- 7:30Speaker 8: the thing. Mac Jones to me has times pretty consistently
- 7:36Speaker 8: where I think he's afraid to throw the ball downfield.
- 7:40Speaker 8: And I just watched him today the past that Paul
- 7:46Speaker 8: started off with in seven on seven, I think that
- 7:49Speaker 8: was at ten thirty four. I think that was the
- 7:51Speaker 8: first time where I said give me zappy because we're
- 7:56Speaker 8: I'm sitting there up top, and why I love sitting
- 7:58Speaker 8: up there is because I can see the developed down
- 8:00Speaker 8: the field and juju is open, juju is open, juju
- 8:05Speaker 8: is open. Juju's open again. Ball comes out and Marcus
- 8:11Speaker 8: Jones just red his eyes. It was a telegraph pass.
- 8:14Speaker 8: It hung up there. It was late and nearly had
- 8:17Speaker 8: an interception. And then they come back on the next
- 8:19Speaker 8: seven on seven run and they run the same plays right.
- 8:22Speaker 8: Mac runs the set of plays, then Zappi runs a
- 8:24Speaker 8: set of plays and from what I can tell, is
- 8:26Speaker 8: the same play call that both quarterbacks get. Now different personnel,
- 8:30Speaker 8: but same play call. Zappi comes back, hits the exact
- 8:34Speaker 8: route to Anthony Firkser down the field on a corner ball. Now,
- 8:37Speaker 8: Zaby wasn't as good an eleven on elevens. I didn't
- 8:40Speaker 8: think as he was in sevens. He had a really
- 8:41Speaker 8: good run at seven's today. They didn't have as much
- 8:44Speaker 8: of a good run in elevens. And Mac didn't make
- 8:47Speaker 8: a couple downfield throws. That gave me a little bit
- 8:50Speaker 8: of Okay, that's better, you know. I thought the deep
- 8:53Speaker 8: ball to Boorn didn't get completed, but he threw it,
- 8:56Speaker 8: and that's the more important part. He threw a nice
- 8:58Speaker 8: out to Hunter Henry as well, and he was good
- 9:00Speaker 8: in the red zone today. But dude, did you write
- 9:03Speaker 8: down the time I threw my pen?
- 9:04Speaker 6: No?
- 9:05Speaker 1: Oh god, well, I should have throwing option.
- 9:07Speaker 7: He did throw a pen at one point, which one
- 9:10Speaker 7: was that.
- 9:10Speaker 8: Of So that was a little bit later than the
- 9:12Speaker 8: than the Juju one. So they're run, they're running like
- 9:18Speaker 8: a vertical on the outside. And then tomorrow Douglas has
- 9:20Speaker 8: a little option route in the slot and if he
- 9:23Speaker 8: gets zoned, He's just gonna sit it down between the
- 9:25Speaker 8: two zone defenders, and the ball is supposed to hit
- 9:27Speaker 8: him between the two zone defenders, and Mac sees it developing. Tomorrow,
- 9:32Speaker 8: Douglas does exactly what he's supposed to do. And there
- 9:35Speaker 8: were two guys in the vicinity, but there was an
- 9:39Speaker 8: opening there and he decided to check it down. He
- 9:42Speaker 8: just didn't didn't want to pull the trigger.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Is there is it a lack of trust?
- 9:47Speaker 9: I do?
- 9:49Speaker 8: I think it's confidence. I think it's confidence.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I think he's because you got to throw these guys open.
- 9:53Speaker 1: You got to assume that they're on their break. They're
- 9:56Speaker 1: gonna break open, right.
- 9:58Speaker 8: And I think this is where to related to the
- 10:00Speaker 8: g r D thing, where I feel I can't keep
- 10:05Speaker 8: making excuses for the guy. I made excuses for him
- 10:08Speaker 8: all last season. I said, the offense's crap, the receivers
- 10:12Speaker 8: aren't very good, they have offensive line problems. And I
- 10:15Speaker 8: kept over and over and over again. I kept blaming Patricia,
- 10:18Speaker 8: I kept blaming everything else besides Mac Jones. And at
- 10:21Speaker 8: some point the quarterbacks got to start making some plays.
- 10:25Speaker 8: It can't always be that the guys are wide open
- 10:28Speaker 8: and he's throwing into two open receivers and they're schemed
- 10:31Speaker 8: open for him, where somebody gets open on a route
- 10:34Speaker 8: and it makes an easy throw for the quarterback. At
- 10:36Speaker 8: some point in time, some the quarterbacks got to start
- 10:39Speaker 8: making some plays.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Do you think Bill O'Brien realizes this as well?
- 10:44Speaker 7: Well, I think that's what we talked about. I mean
- 10:46Speaker 7: we were kind of you know, this was part of
- 10:47Speaker 7: our discussion when we were up there, and it was just,
- 10:49Speaker 7: you know, what point do you start to see Zappie
- 10:51Speaker 7: get some some chances. You know, when does it actually
- 10:54Speaker 7: start to seem like well, but they're seeing it.
- 10:56Speaker 1: In Max's defense, I see Mackie Mackie. I see he's
- 11:00Speaker 1: happy doing the same thing. He's pulling it down, he's
- 11:02Speaker 1: not making it. He's not decisive. It's both guys.
- 11:05Speaker 6: I kind of feel like it's difficult when you know
- 11:08Speaker 6: they were put in that situation last year and now
- 11:10Speaker 6: this year they're kind of starting from fresh with like
- 11:12Speaker 6: new receivers and a new coach and new offense.
- 11:15Speaker 3: I think it's tough. And then you took away his binkie.
- 11:18Speaker 6: As everyone likes to say in Jacoby Myers, like that's
- 11:20Speaker 6: probably the only guy that he trusted that he knew
- 11:22Speaker 6: was going to be there if he let go of
- 11:23Speaker 6: the ball. And I think that unfortunately, he's going to
- 11:25Speaker 6: have to find a new guy. Whether that's Hunter Henry again,
- 11:28Speaker 6: whether it's Juju Douglas, I don't know who it is,
- 11:31Speaker 6: but he's going to have to find some trustle.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Remember the days when we watch practice and we go, man,
- 11:36Speaker 1: it's so tough on the defense. It's almost impossible to cover.
- 11:39Speaker 1: You know, the receiver knows he can't be hit. He's
- 11:43Speaker 1: not wearing about that. You know it's not you know,
- 11:46Speaker 1: it's impossible, and so you would kind of make excuses
- 11:49Speaker 1: for the defense.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Those days are over.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Those days are over, and.
- 11:53Speaker 6: I just find it so interesting. I was actually listening
- 11:54Speaker 6: to Hunter Henry's press conference today. They were like, how
- 11:57Speaker 6: hard is it going against this defense where you're getting so.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Many and you're trying to install your offense?
- 12:03Speaker 6: And so in a way, I think it's like hard
- 12:04Speaker 6: because you're like, this defense returns so many veterans, obviously
- 12:07Speaker 6: outside of Devin mccordy, and so they have so much chemistry,
- 12:11Speaker 6: They know what each other thinking.
- 12:12Speaker 3: They have confidence and trust.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And I think that's part of it. I mean I
- 12:16Speaker 1: like I said, I think it's a good defense. However,
- 12:19Speaker 1: I'd much rather see the ball coming out on time
- 12:22Speaker 1: and being defended or picked off or or whatever than
- 12:27Speaker 1: pulling it down and checking down every play. You know,
- 12:32Speaker 1: I'd rather see that.
- 12:33Speaker 5: And that's not like you can't do that. Why not,
- 12:36Speaker 5: because if the play's not there, you don't just throw
- 12:38Speaker 5: it anyway because it's proud.
- 12:39Speaker 1: But sometimes it is there and you know there There have.
- 12:41Speaker 5: Been times where I think the timing has been an
- 12:43Speaker 5: issue and the throws have been late, but not every
- 12:45Speaker 5: time the quarterback holds the ball and scrambles means the
- 12:48Speaker 5: quarterback didn't throw it and.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Needs to throw it.
- 12:50Speaker 5: But I'm not the coverage is better than the receivers.
- 12:53Speaker 5: Like there's no. I don't think anybody impartially can look
- 12:57Speaker 5: I mean GIARTI aside. Yeah, No, I don't think anybody
- 13:00Speaker 5: can watch what's going on and say that the receivers
- 13:01Speaker 5: are consistently open.
- 13:03Speaker 8: No, I I agree, I agree with that.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I would agree, but show that, you know what I mean,
- 13:07Speaker 1: by throwing it where it's supposed to go.
- 13:11Speaker 5: It's a good way to get the guys mad at
- 13:12Speaker 5: you know, you need to show it. You want to
- 13:14Speaker 5: show them up.
- 13:14Speaker 1: You need to get open. I'm expecting you to be
- 13:17Speaker 1: open on that break and you're not open. I also
- 13:20Speaker 1: not getting to your I don't think.
- 13:21Speaker 5: That's a good habit for a quarterback to get into.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Like in a game, I would never throw this, but
- 13:25Speaker 5: I'm gonna throw. I sit back of the defense.
- 13:27Speaker 7: I said, one drill a day, one drill a day,
- 13:31Speaker 7: get it out drill.
- 13:31Speaker 8: So yeah, so here's the thing I agree with. I
- 13:35Speaker 8: agree with Paul. They both made really really good points.
- 13:38Speaker 8: And that's why I don't want to sit here six
- 13:40Speaker 8: practices in and say that that this is a competition
- 13:43Speaker 8: because we're only got have a very small sample size
- 13:47Speaker 8: to work from. But I I don't think that guys
- 13:49Speaker 8: are open, but I think there are instances where guys
- 13:51Speaker 8: are NFL open. And if your NFL open between a
- 13:55Speaker 8: zone void, I need to see the ball like the
- 13:57Speaker 8: ball needs to get there. And that's a problem that
- 14:01Speaker 8: I think that I have seen somewhat consistently with Mac
- 14:05Speaker 8: is that for MAC is still operating on college open sometimes,
- 14:10Speaker 8: where like guys have to be really open for him
- 14:13Speaker 8: to throw the football, whereas in the NFL, yeah, you
- 14:16Speaker 8: might need to fit the ball between two guys coming
- 14:18Speaker 8: over the you know, over the middle of the field
- 14:20Speaker 8: into his zone void where he might not be open
- 14:23Speaker 8: in the first window, but he's gonna be open in
- 14:24Speaker 8: the second window. So if you hit it on time,
- 14:27Speaker 8: then you should be able to get it in there.
- 14:28Speaker 1: If my number one receivers route, if it's supposed to
- 14:31Speaker 1: be an out or whatever, and I see that the
- 14:34Speaker 1: cornerback or whoever's covering him is on his inside hip,
- 14:38Speaker 1: I gotta throw that ball because I know when he
- 14:40Speaker 1: makes the break, he's gonna have one step and if
- 14:43Speaker 1: the ball arrives on time, he'll have a chance at it.
- 14:47Speaker 7: I thought you were gonna call it Alabama Open, which
- 14:49Speaker 7: I think.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Is another level college open. College open is different, but
- 14:56Speaker 1: Alabama what Evan says. But what Evan says, this is
- 15:00Speaker 1: what all the experts say is NFL Open is different
- 15:03Speaker 1: than college.
- 15:03Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, and you say you want one drill
- 15:08Speaker 8: where they have to get it out in a certain
- 15:10Speaker 8: period of time. If this goes on for another week,
- 15:12Speaker 8: then I'm not saying that they should make Zapy the starter,
- 15:15Speaker 8: So please do not take it that way. But I
- 15:18Speaker 8: think we at some point need to see what it
- 15:20Speaker 8: looks like with ZAPPI with the ones, Like, what does
- 15:23Speaker 8: because he goes out there against the second team defense
- 15:25Speaker 8: a couple of days ago and he's throwing dimes. I
- 15:27Speaker 8: mean he's he's dining up Jalen Hurd like, I you know,
- 15:31Speaker 8: Jalen Hurd's a guy that's not gonna make this team.
- 15:34Speaker 8: Trey Nixon on a on a crossing route, dime, Taekwon
- 15:38Speaker 8: Thornton back at the end zone, dime like. But that's
- 15:40Speaker 8: against the second team defense, against Sean Wade, and it's
- 15:43Speaker 8: against Isaiah Bolden. So I'm not gonna sit here and
- 15:46Speaker 8: say that it's the same. It's not Apple's to Oranges.
- 15:49Speaker 8: It's harder, but harder for Mac. I'm saying, but at
- 15:53Speaker 8: some point, if this goes on for another week, then
- 15:55Speaker 8: I would at least like to see one period of practice,
- 15:59Speaker 8: like what does it look like for Zappy against the
- 16:02Speaker 8: starting defense and you can explain it away and said, oh,
- 16:05Speaker 8: or like working on emergency quarterback stuff, like do whatever
- 16:08Speaker 8: you gotta do to try to hide that it's actually
- 16:11Speaker 8: a real competition.
- 16:12Speaker 1: How you have to expose what the problem is. So
- 16:14Speaker 1: if the ball's on time and it's getting defense, I
- 16:16Speaker 1: know my receivers can't get open. They're just not getting open,
- 16:19Speaker 1: you know, So I we just got to get to
- 16:23Speaker 1: the root of the problem.
- 16:24Speaker 5: And this is one of my favorite freddieism zephy. He's
- 16:27Speaker 5: just so frustrated.
- 16:28Speaker 1: I can sense.
- 16:29Speaker 5: It's like they know when they watch film, the coaches
- 16:32Speaker 5: know what the problem is.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Why I said that, you think Bill O'Brien is seeing
- 16:35Speaker 1: what we think we're saying because we don't know either,
- 16:38Speaker 1: we're idiot.
- 16:39Speaker 6: And I will say too, with like the whole NFL
- 16:41Speaker 6: Open College open thing, I think Taekwon struggling with that too.
- 16:44Speaker 6: Like I think that we haven't really seen him like
- 16:47Speaker 6: break free and become.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Get open either.
- 16:49Speaker 6: I mean all the wide receivers, but Taekwan, I mean
- 16:50Speaker 6: he really hasn't done anything.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I saw somebody wrote today that Taekwon's dealing with having
- 16:54Speaker 1: gained some more muscle weight and he's still trying to
- 16:57Speaker 1: adjust it.
- 16:58Speaker 5: Really, I just don't know how that can be.
- 17:04Speaker 8: But that's my point is like, at what point do
- 17:06Speaker 8: we have to stop making all the excuses? And I
- 17:09Speaker 8: think if you look at this is not a good
- 17:11Speaker 8: receiving group, it's not, but it's also not the worst
- 17:13Speaker 8: receiving group in the NFL like it. You know, ESPN
- 17:17Speaker 8: and some of these other places ranked them in like
- 17:19Speaker 8: the twenties. Right, So it's not a good group. I'm
- 17:21Speaker 8: not trying to argue that. But you have a decent
- 17:24Speaker 8: group of receivers whatever you want to call it, an
- 17:26Speaker 8: average group of receivers. You have Bill O'Brien, who I
- 17:29Speaker 8: think is doing a lot of really good things with
- 17:31Speaker 8: what they're installing into the offense. And I can't help
- 17:34Speaker 8: but feeling if you had a real playmaker at the
- 17:37Speaker 8: quarterback position, that it looked better. Like I I just
- 17:41Speaker 8: can't help but thinking that, and that's that might be
- 17:44Speaker 8: tomorrow's problem. Like I don't think you can solve that.
- 17:47Speaker 8: It's not gonna be Zappi. It's not gonna you're not
- 17:49Speaker 8: going to solve that overnight. But that that's just a
- 17:52Speaker 8: general gist of what I feel is that DeVante Parker,
- 17:57Speaker 8: Juju Bourne the two tight ends. Maybe de Mario Douglas
- 18:01Speaker 8: is the thing. Maybe Taekwon wakes up a little bit
- 18:04Speaker 8: in a couple of weeks or something like that. If
- 18:06Speaker 8: you had a real playmaker at the quarterback position, I
- 18:09Speaker 8: think this would be enough to be a decent.
- 18:12Speaker 1: There might be an email going down to football titled
- 18:15Speaker 1: three second Session. I think there.
- 18:17Speaker 5: I think there's some truth to that like that. I
- 18:19Speaker 5: think like a great quarterback could could lift this personnel
- 18:23Speaker 5: a little bit more than maybe mackin Zappi or capable
- 18:26Speaker 5: of doing. And that's that's why they're great, right, And
- 18:28Speaker 5: I think that's reasonable. But I think that there's a
- 18:32Speaker 5: chance for some things, you know, we keep talking about.
- 18:36Speaker 5: We can sort of see some of the things that
- 18:37Speaker 5: Bill O'Brien wants to do. And it's the same offense
- 18:40Speaker 5: that they had, right, It's there's very little differences. I
- 18:43Speaker 5: mean there's nuance to everything and play calling between Josh
- 18:47Speaker 5: and Bill O'Brien, but it's the same offense, Like it's
- 18:49Speaker 5: the same concepts and a lot of the same verbiage
- 18:52Speaker 5: and whatnot. But we know they want to throw the
- 18:55Speaker 5: ball sideways a lot, right, They want to create picks
- 18:57Speaker 5: and this, by the way, they still at that. They
- 19:00Speaker 5: did it like three or four times today. Hunter Henry
- 19:02Speaker 5: is outstanding at setting picks without like they're being blatantly penalties.
- 19:07Speaker 5: Quick game has been good, Yeah, and I think you
- 19:10Speaker 5: could still see some of that we're talking you know
- 19:13Speaker 5: the know it all's we're talking about, like Taekwon, Thornton
- 19:15Speaker 5: is to me an immensely important piece because if you
- 19:19Speaker 5: want to play that way, you need to have something
- 19:21Speaker 5: to make like if they if they by the second
- 19:25Speaker 5: half of week one, I can envision like ten guys
- 19:28Speaker 5: within five yards of the line of scrimmage on defense, right,
- 19:31Speaker 5: And if you don't have something to push someone back,
- 19:34Speaker 5: you can throw the ball sideways all you want. It's
- 19:36Speaker 5: going to be hard.
- 19:38Speaker 1: And I think.
- 19:38Speaker 5: Thornton is that guy. Like to me, he's the guy
- 19:41Speaker 5: that has to put some stress on a secondary. I'm
- 19:44Speaker 5: not a big take the top off the defense guy,
- 19:46Speaker 5: but you need somebody to at least put that in
- 19:48Speaker 5: the back of their minds. And I think Thornton is
- 19:51Speaker 5: the guy ideally, And.
- 19:52Speaker 7: I just he's been invisible. I don't know, I didn't.
- 19:55Speaker 5: I mean, how to go about it.
- 19:58Speaker 8: I think that's the biggest thing for me to it
- 20:01Speaker 8: put it in a way that's not as hot taking is.
- 20:03Speaker 8: You can't you can't what had me be in the
- 20:06Speaker 8: voice of reason, The whole offense can't be the quick game.
- 20:09Speaker 5: You can't be hard.
- 20:10Speaker 8: Way can't be slam, flat screen, motionless motion like you
- 20:14Speaker 8: can't do that as that's not an offense. That's just
- 20:17Speaker 8: a part of an offense. And if that's your entire offense,
- 20:20Speaker 8: that that's the only thing that you can execute at.
- 20:22Speaker 1: A high level become what predictable.
- 20:25Speaker 5: Easy to defense can be a long season Season three.
- 20:30Speaker 6: One questions for the group with the passing game for
- 20:35Speaker 6: better word, struggling as much as is right now? Do
- 20:37Speaker 6: you see like maybe a bigger push for Dobbin Cook
- 20:40Speaker 6: or Zeke or Leonard Fournette.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I don't see. Well, Cook helps a little bit, but
- 20:46Speaker 1: I don't see the other two helping that much in
- 20:48Speaker 1: the passing game. That's still we're still talking about quick
- 20:51Speaker 1: underneath stuff, which, like Evin said, is part of an offense.
- 20:55Speaker 7: Well, and that's and that's the like the more tangible
- 20:58Speaker 7: issue that we can certainly talk about, which is the
- 21:00Speaker 7: offensive line is I don't want to say shambles yet,
- 21:03Speaker 7: but it's getting close. It's getting close to shambles. Six
- 21:06Speaker 7: days in the camp.
- 21:06Speaker 5: When you're missing three of your projected five starters with
- 21:09Speaker 5: a when you strange and Trent Brown, I don't know
- 21:12Speaker 5: what his deal is, right, So you are operating to
- 21:15Speaker 5: the timing aspect in eleven on eleven's there's not a
- 21:19Speaker 5: lot of time back there. Even when you're in shells,
- 21:21Speaker 5: they're not a lot of time because that's an issue.
- 21:24Speaker 5: But I think it speaks to the lack of depth
- 21:26Speaker 5: at a lot of spots. Mike and I talked in
- 21:29Speaker 5: the podcast about running back, edge, rusher, tackle, like there's
- 21:35Speaker 5: a scary amount of depth at some of these spots.
- 21:39Speaker 5: You don't have to have fifteen plus injuries to be
- 21:41Speaker 5: in trouble, right, You can lose four or five select
- 21:44Speaker 5: guys and you could be in trouble.
- 21:46Speaker 1: We can spend all this time two guys in one
- 21:48Speaker 1: position group.
- 21:49Speaker 7: We spent all the time talking about the offense and
- 21:51Speaker 7: what they can't do, and it's like, well, if they
- 21:52Speaker 7: can't block anybody, no matter who.
- 21:54Speaker 5: It's about how difficult it is to scheme around a
- 21:57Speaker 5: lack of tackles.
- 21:57Speaker 7: I mean, there's still part of me that thinks that
- 21:59Speaker 7: this team will get to a place where like they
- 22:02Speaker 7: usually are, when there the situation is favorable. Maybe they
- 22:05Speaker 7: first drive, they get a touchdown there in the lead,
- 22:07Speaker 7: or the defense puts them up and they're able to
- 22:09Speaker 7: kind of I know.
- 22:10Speaker 5: They can do that. They can they can do that.
- 22:12Speaker 7: I still have no confidence in this team that that
- 22:14Speaker 7: that they can take that next step that when they're
- 22:16Speaker 7: against the team that can punch back and they're, you know,
- 22:18Speaker 7: down by a couple of scores and they're up against them,
- 22:20Speaker 7: they have to throw? Can they throw? That seems like
- 22:23Speaker 7: a long way.
- 22:24Speaker 1: To I think one of the causes for hope is
- 22:26Speaker 1: maybe the defense is really that good. Maybe you know,
- 22:30Speaker 1: I'm not again, we're not making excuses here for the offense,
- 22:33Speaker 1: but maybe we're looking at a pretty good defense.
- 22:36Speaker 5: It's possible pretty good.
- 22:37Speaker 7: I think the question, though, is is how good of
- 22:39Speaker 7: a defense can you really be in today's game? And
- 22:42Speaker 7: we haven't seen them against you know.
- 22:43Speaker 1: How good wide receivers two thousand and four?
- 22:47Speaker 5: How good was like Ty Law and Sante Samuel and
- 22:50Speaker 5: Rodney Harrison. We're pretty good, Mike Rabel. They prebaty found
- 22:53Speaker 5: a way to complete all the passes.
- 22:55Speaker 7: No, I know, I know, go but and they I mean,
- 22:57Speaker 7: but we also have the Super Bowl.
- 23:00Speaker 5: I understand that. But what I'm saying is I do
- 23:03Speaker 5: think the defense is pretty good. Yeah, I'm not telling
- 23:05Speaker 5: you they stink, no, But I'm just I think the
- 23:07Speaker 5: defense is pretty good in practice, you should complete more
- 23:09Speaker 5: than they do. Yeah, in practice, you should complete more
- 23:12Speaker 5: passes than the Patriots have over the last now three camps.
- 23:16Speaker 7: Yeah, and let's see the defense go against those guys.
- 23:19Speaker 7: I mean, not that Green Bay is quite, but you know,
- 23:21Speaker 7: get some joint practices. See them go against some other
- 23:23Speaker 7: talented wide receivers. How does it look down?
- 23:25Speaker 1: You know? And maybe that's why, I don't know if
- 23:27Speaker 1: it was yesterday or Sunday, why the defense seemed to
- 23:30Speaker 1: get a little annoyed when the offense did have some
- 23:33Speaker 1: limited success and started celebrating. It was like, what are
- 23:36Speaker 1: you doing? We're dominating you. You know, we don't celebrate
- 23:39Speaker 1: every time we break up a pass, you know, like
- 23:42Speaker 1: that anyway.
- 23:43Speaker 5: Not like you know, not like Mac did on that
- 23:45Speaker 5: scramble twenty minutes after the whistle.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Great, right, So.
- 23:49Speaker 5: One other thing, I was talking to Zoe yesterday, who
- 23:51Speaker 5: and Michael tell you Zoe's a little bit more in
- 23:54Speaker 5: the Evan camp, Not so much specifically toward Mac, but
- 23:57Speaker 5: everything in general. He's down on offensively, the screen game
- 24:01Speaker 5: that has been such a big part of what the
- 24:03Speaker 5: Patriots do. He thinks has really taking a hit with
- 24:06Speaker 5: the rules. It's not like a revolutionary thought. But not
- 24:09Speaker 5: being able to get those linemen out in space and
- 24:11Speaker 5: being able to cut guys, he thinks has really hurt
- 24:15Speaker 5: their screen game.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Dante Scarneki, I'll tell you that.
- 24:17Speaker 8: Yeah, Dante Scarneki will only believed in cutting guys. Yeah,
- 24:20Speaker 8: on screen.
- 24:21Speaker 5: So yeah, I remember that Stephen Neil one in Atlanta
- 24:23Speaker 5: a years ago. Oh yeah, I can't tell you what
- 24:26Speaker 5: happened yesterday, but I remember that block that Stephen Neil threw.
- 24:29Speaker 8: I talked to David Andrews about that maybe last year,
- 24:31Speaker 8: I think it was, and he had mentioned that he
- 24:34Speaker 8: had to basically retrain his whole thought process because scar
- 24:38Speaker 8: had just drilled into them cut block, cup block, cut block,
- 24:40Speaker 8: and then now you can't do that anymore. So it
- 24:43Speaker 8: was a completely different technique for him. But I just
- 24:48Speaker 8: I think the frustration is from a bigger pictures perspective,
- 24:52Speaker 8: is just these issues would tackle, these issues with the
- 24:54Speaker 8: receivers can separate. And then you also add into the
- 24:57Speaker 8: fact that your quarterback is not one of these big
- 25:00Speaker 8: time playmakers, like we knew this, we knew all these things,
- 25:04Speaker 8: Like we knew that they needed DeAndre Hopkins, we knew
- 25:07Speaker 8: that they were thin at tackle, and now we're a
- 25:09Speaker 8: week into camp and we're talking about how receivers can't
- 25:11Speaker 8: get open and how they don't have any tackles.
- 25:13Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's just frustrating.
- 25:15Speaker 8: How can you not we saw it coming. It's like
- 25:17Speaker 8: you're standing on the tracks and you're waiting for the train,
- 25:19Speaker 8: like we saw it coming. And now here we are
- 25:22Speaker 8: a week in and it's already a talking point, like
- 25:24Speaker 8: we're already having discussions about these things. And I think
- 25:27Speaker 8: that's probably where most of my frustration about.
- 25:30Speaker 7: It comes to tackle one especially. I mean, just think
- 25:31Speaker 7: about the combine, Like we were like the tackle day,
- 25:34Speaker 7: We're like, they can't get out of the second day
- 25:36Speaker 7: of the draft without getting a tackle, and you know,
- 25:38Speaker 7: I know city salary, right, Yeah, now now he's a tackle,
- 25:41Speaker 7: that's how we're working them. But he's you know, buried
- 25:42Speaker 7: on the depth chart, so he doesn't seem like he's
- 25:44Speaker 7: going to be in the mix at right tackle. It
- 25:46Speaker 7: doesn't even really seem like Stuber is even getting a chance.
- 25:48Speaker 7: And that's at least something you could say, hey, here's
- 25:50Speaker 7: a kid in the second year, maybe maybe there's something
- 25:52Speaker 7: here to work with. But they're just continuing to run
- 25:55Speaker 7: those those veterans.
- 25:56Speaker 5: And I thought Stuber on Monday was sort of the
- 25:59Speaker 5: X to tight end is that third tackle on the field,
- 26:02Speaker 5: so you kind of thought, oh, maybe he is making
- 26:04Speaker 5: a little bit of a push. And then today today
- 26:07Speaker 5: it's just and McDermott. You know, like no offense to McDermott.
- 26:10Speaker 8: I know that McDermott's been fine. They ran they ran
- 26:14Speaker 8: pin Poll to Riley Reeves sided two guys, Marty Mapu
- 26:18Speaker 8: and Juwan Bentley would have stuff. They're running back for
- 26:21Speaker 8: a four yard loss and I'm like asking him to
- 26:24Speaker 8: move his feet. Maybe we shouldn't do that's let's let's
- 26:27Speaker 8: run pin Poll to the other side.
- 26:28Speaker 1: If we're going to do that, yeah, that's good play.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I'm not wow.
- 26:37Speaker 5: Devastation sets in. We will not be taking a break because.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Paul, what do we got?
- 26:42Speaker 6: Uh?
- 26:43Speaker 1: What do we got upstairs?
- 26:44Speaker 3: In the nothing?
- 26:46Speaker 5: Nothing?
- 26:47Speaker 7: Noot the commons, I don't think check.
- 26:51Speaker 1: I saw Bradley with a really nice looking ruben.
- 26:54Speaker 7: Yeah, that's a good sandwich.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I can't eat that. That's a good sandwich.
- 26:58Speaker 5: You can't eat those.
- 27:00Speaker 1: No, why I'm trying to lose weight?
- 27:01Speaker 5: So do you.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Did? I? There? You go?
- 27:06Speaker 3: What to beach fod seasons over.
- 27:09Speaker 1: It's not just about the beach.
- 27:11Speaker 3: I'm just saying it.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Spoke quality of life, and it's August. First beach season
- 27:15Speaker 5: is not over right for us?
- 27:18Speaker 7: It is actually mean like nineteen eighty six.
- 27:20Speaker 5: For me, it's been over since nineteen ninety when I
- 27:23Speaker 5: graduated colle.
- 27:24Speaker 7: When I used to follow my shirt on. Oh my
- 27:27Speaker 7: shirt's on, I fell in the pool. What am I
- 27:28Speaker 7: going to do it on?
- 27:29Speaker 1: I guess? Ah. So it sounds like we're really down
- 27:33Speaker 1: on the team, but we're not. But well we're we're
- 27:38Speaker 1: we're frustrated with the offense. I mean, I think and
- 27:41Speaker 1: you know, we did this last year and we said, oh,
- 27:44Speaker 1: they'll get they'll get it together, and they never did.
- 27:46Speaker 5: And I honestly don't think it's been as bad as
- 27:48Speaker 5: last year.
- 27:49Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, because last year it's been different. Yeah.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Last year, something just didn't look right, you know, and
- 27:56Speaker 1: you couldn't stunk and it just it just didn't look right.
- 27:58Speaker 1: This looks like what they're doing looks fine, but just
- 28:02Speaker 1: not exit pre.
- 28:04Speaker 7: Stuff looks beautiful. I mean, yea, remember we like we
- 28:06Speaker 7: can't even get a guy in motion with the last
- 28:08Speaker 7: year's offer.
- 28:08Speaker 5: You know, now you can make a document as to
- 28:11Speaker 5: which is worse, right, because I think the execution is
- 28:13Speaker 5: lacking now and last year I thought the design was lacking.
- 28:16Speaker 5: But at least I don't think they had any sort
- 28:17Speaker 5: of creativity at all.
- 28:18Speaker 7: Least I've got the false hope of or they could
- 28:21Speaker 7: get it. I mean, they might all come together.
- 28:23Speaker 5: And to Fred's point about the defense, they've also seen
- 28:26Speaker 5: all of this stuff before, So maybe it will look
- 28:29Speaker 5: different against Green Bay in Tennessee when they're not as oh, well,
- 28:33Speaker 5: you know there you go. They're gonna put this guy
- 28:35Speaker 5: over here, they're gonna pinpull, I'm coming in there. You know,
- 28:39Speaker 5: like these things are all keys for the defense that
- 28:41Speaker 5: they know, right, So maybe it will look different when
- 28:43Speaker 5: they're playing against the defense that doesn't know everything.
- 28:45Speaker 8: Yeah. I mean Jalen Mills that interception he had the
- 28:47Speaker 8: end of practice the other day. He said they ran
- 28:49Speaker 8: the same play at the day before, so I knew
- 28:51Speaker 8: it was coming.
- 28:52Speaker 1: And from where they stand on the field, is there
- 28:55Speaker 1: any doubt that Steve Belichick is the defensive coordinator of
- 28:57Speaker 1: this team. I don't know.
- 29:00Speaker 7: I mean, I've seen Gerard out there kind of direct.
- 29:02Speaker 1: And directs he brings in the players in and off
- 29:05Speaker 1: the sideline and everything. But I think Steve Belichick is
- 29:09Speaker 1: is the coordinator.
- 29:10Speaker 8: I think it's the same as it was has been.
- 29:12Speaker 8: I don't think anything will change.
- 29:13Speaker 1: But I think it was a question before. I don't
- 29:15Speaker 1: think there's any questions.
- 29:16Speaker 8: Well, I think Steve is the play caller. We've known that, yeah, well,
- 29:19Speaker 8: you know, right, And I think Gerrod handles the sideline substitutions.
- 29:22Speaker 8: And then from what I've heard, girod Is is a
- 29:25Speaker 8: big presenter and during the week, you know, like.
- 29:27Speaker 1: To Paul's point, like they've seen this stuff and you know,
- 29:30Speaker 1: what are the keys? I think it's Steve teaching the
- 29:33Speaker 1: players what the keys are to look for.
- 29:35Speaker 8: You know, it's possible, you know, yeah.
- 29:38Speaker 1: And you know playing defense, keys are That's that's how
- 29:43Speaker 1: you play your game. You look for your keys, you know.
- 29:46Speaker 8: Yeah. I don't want to. I know I have all
- 29:50Speaker 8: the little notes from Deuson that was all kind of
- 29:52Speaker 8: tongue in cheek. But I think the main thing is
- 29:55Speaker 8: is that when I look at what Bill Brian's doing schematically,
- 29:58Speaker 8: I really like, what do you installing? And it it
- 30:01Speaker 8: looks good like it looks sound and there's a lot
- 30:03Speaker 8: more moving parts, it's a lot more complex for defenses
- 30:06Speaker 8: to decipher and things like that. And so I believe
- 30:10Speaker 8: in the system, like I believe in the and the coaching,
- 30:12Speaker 8: and I believe in what they're doing from an offensive
- 30:15Speaker 8: system point of view. So the fact that it's not
- 30:18Speaker 8: really clicking very consistently right now, it to me that
- 30:22Speaker 8: makes it a talent issue, right. But maybe it's all
- 30:25Speaker 8: of it, you know, maybe they all needs to keep
- 30:27Speaker 8: coming together. But I think that there's just there's just
- 30:31Speaker 8: something you're just missing that that period of time where
- 30:36Speaker 8: they just go right through the defense like consistently, and
- 30:41Speaker 8: Mac just like lights up a practice, right, And I
- 30:43Speaker 8: think people are gonna say, well, once Mac everlet in
- 30:46Speaker 8: his rookie year, he did have practices where I don't
- 30:48Speaker 8: know if you want to call it lit it up,
- 30:50Speaker 8: but he's like right, and he had some really really
- 30:54Speaker 8: good practices. The ones that we always point to are
- 30:56Speaker 8: those giant joint practices, especially the first Giants joint practice.
- 31:00Speaker 8: Cam wasn't there. He got all the reps and he
- 31:03Speaker 8: went like twenty five of thirty against the Giants defense
- 31:06Speaker 8: and just he lit it up. I think that day.
- 31:10Speaker 8: So it's not that he's incapable of it. We just
- 31:12Speaker 8: haven't really seen it. And until we do, I don't
- 31:15Speaker 8: know if that that guy's ever coming back.
- 31:17Speaker 7: Three second session, get it out, get it do it,
- 31:20Speaker 7: Fret's get it out session.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Gotta do it all right? Eight five five PATS five
- 31:24Speaker 1: hundred is the ACE ticket hout line, web radio at
- 31:27Speaker 1: Patriots dot com is the email address. Have we heard
- 31:30Speaker 1: of other quarterbacks around the league lighting it up in practice,
- 31:33Speaker 1: like Ryan Tannehill?
- 31:35Speaker 7: Really, No, he's been he's been good. I guess with
- 31:37Speaker 7: uh Hopkins. I mean that they've they've got a good connection.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I mean, before Burrow got hurt, I saw a couple
- 31:42Speaker 1: of places to Chase that were, you know, Chase just
- 31:44Speaker 1: burn people. But I just like, I'm not hearing him.
- 31:47Speaker 5: I have paid attention.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I just don't.
- 31:50Speaker 7: I just it's what I get on Twitter. And of
- 31:51Speaker 7: course those are only highlighting the highlights. So you know,
- 31:54Speaker 7: Alan di Diggs is that you know had some mass throws,
- 31:57Speaker 7: but the only one I did read was just that
- 31:59Speaker 7: that it seemed like Tannahill and Nuke have some good chemistry.
- 32:02Speaker 8: But that's the thing, right, it's gotta be one of
- 32:04Speaker 8: the other like, I don't think much of Ryan Tannehill
- 32:06Speaker 8: as a quarterback, but now that he has DeAndre Hopkins
- 32:09Speaker 8: to throw too, all of a sudden, he looks a
- 32:10Speaker 8: little bit better. And when he had aj Brown to
- 32:12Speaker 8: throw too, he looked a little bit better than he
- 32:13Speaker 8: did in Miami. So you have to have one of
- 32:15Speaker 8: the other. You either have to the quarterback or you have
- 32:17Speaker 8: to have the playmakers around him. But if you just
- 32:19Speaker 8: kind of have neither, right, then you're in trouble.
- 32:22Speaker 7: But I mean, but real talk, hashtag real talk. I mean,
- 32:24Speaker 7: oh my gosh, do we how do we feel if
- 32:30Speaker 7: if Nuke was here? I mean, based on what we've
- 32:32Speaker 7: seen in practice, do we think that Nuke will be
- 32:34Speaker 7: lighting it up with Mac right now? Like, I have
- 32:35Speaker 7: my real doubts that that it would look all that well.
- 32:38Speaker 5: Obviously he wouldn't be practicing if he was here.
- 32:41Speaker 8: You did you see him?
- 32:42Speaker 3: Did you see him quote tweet that catch?
- 32:45Speaker 7: Yeah, he's got to be in his bonnet about that
- 32:48Speaker 7: want to practice? But I don't know. I mean, I,
- 32:51Speaker 7: like I said, I haven't given up hope that this
- 32:52Speaker 7: offense can get to a place with the personnel that
- 32:54Speaker 7: they have with Mac Jones, a quarterback that they'll be
- 32:57Speaker 7: effective against, you know, especially overmatch defenses that just aren't
- 33:00Speaker 7: ready for what they're about to throw at him. But
- 33:02Speaker 7: you know, until I get the it's just hard at
- 33:05Speaker 7: getting that confidence that they're gonna be able to play
- 33:06Speaker 7: against the best teams right now, and until they start
- 33:09Speaker 7: clicking like that and start lighting up a good defense,
- 33:12Speaker 7: which we all agree that the Patriots defense is. It's
- 33:14Speaker 7: it's it's hard to make that leap until you see it.
- 33:16Speaker 6: I think that confidence starts with Mac and I think
- 33:18Speaker 6: because he lacks that confidence or he looks like he
- 33:21Speaker 6: lacks that confidence, how do you how do you expect
- 33:23Speaker 6: everyone around you to be confident too.
- 33:25Speaker 7: It's it's it's weird. It's it's a weird thing. And
- 33:27Speaker 7: it's just with him because he does everything like you know,
- 33:29Speaker 7: he's in front of the lines and he you know,
- 33:31Speaker 7: he's just he's got good energy. He's off season, he
- 33:35Speaker 7: went wins off season award, he's you know, giving guys
- 33:37Speaker 7: high fives. They all seem to, you know, recognize him
- 33:40Speaker 7: as the quarterback. But it's just the performance on the
- 33:42Speaker 7: field is just kind of remains replacement level. I guess
- 33:46Speaker 7: as how I would put it just you know, an
- 33:47Speaker 7: average quarterback play missing stuff, you know, almost throws almost there,
- 33:51Speaker 7: but not quite. You know, maybe maybe it'll start to
- 33:54Speaker 7: click for him, maybe, you know, maybe this is some
- 33:56Speaker 7: residual effect from last year and he got in his
- 33:58Speaker 7: own head and he's maybe second guest and things at times.
- 34:00Speaker 7: And you know, as he gets more comfortable in the
- 34:02Speaker 7: offense and he sees what they're trying to show him,
- 34:05Speaker 7: that he'll be able to pull the trigger quickly and accurately.
- 34:08Speaker 7: But you know, so far, it's just been so So have.
- 34:11Speaker 6: We seen him still doing those mental reps on the
- 34:13Speaker 6: side least, he has he stopped doing those.
- 34:15Speaker 1: I think he's pretty much stopped doing that for the
- 34:17Speaker 1: most part. When he has a bad series, he'll kind
- 34:22Speaker 1: of stand in the back. When he just came off
- 34:25Speaker 1: a good one or a good play, he'll stand right
- 34:27Speaker 1: next to Bill O'Brien. It's funny. I've been watching that.
- 34:31Speaker 1: I've been watching that.
- 34:32Speaker 7: I mean, part of it, too, I think, is he
- 34:34Speaker 7: probably just wants some privacy to hear the calls when
- 34:37Speaker 7: Zappi or you know, MX earlier in there, so that
- 34:39Speaker 7: he can do those mental reps without But it isn't
- 34:41Speaker 7: the same as like when he would kind of be
- 34:43Speaker 7: off on an island and yeah, what he's doing.
- 34:45Speaker 1: He's not doing that this year. Yeah, so, but it
- 34:48Speaker 1: is funny the body language. When he just just had
- 34:51Speaker 1: a good play. He stands right next to Bill and
- 34:54Speaker 1: when he does it, he can sit in the back
- 34:56Speaker 1: and you know.
- 34:57Speaker 8: We did get it. Let's go today. From that he
- 35:01Speaker 8: hit Remondra Stevenson for that touchdown in the flat.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Oh, like we did it.
- 35:05Speaker 8: Let's go yeah, Like no, no, that like a like
- 35:08Speaker 8: a yes, that's what we want to do.
- 35:11Speaker 1: We should also keep our eyes on Bill O'Brien because
- 35:14Speaker 1: he's not one that doesn't wear his emotions on his sleeve.
- 35:17Speaker 1: So if it does get to the point where he's
- 35:19Speaker 1: starting to get frustrated, you're gonna see it.
- 35:22Speaker 7: I haven't seen it.
- 35:23Speaker 1: I haven't.
- 35:24Speaker 7: No, we haven't seen that yet. He seems almost like professorial,
- 35:28Speaker 7: like he just he sees he's got the glasses on.
- 35:30Speaker 7: He goes out, he shows things and he just kind
- 35:31Speaker 7: of stands in the back and and watches what they do.
- 35:34Speaker 7: But you haven't really seen him lose his uh loses
- 35:37Speaker 7: they have.
- 35:37Speaker 1: You haven't seen him like you know, like Josh McDaniels
- 35:40Speaker 1: would be the same way. He would, you know, yell
- 35:42Speaker 1: at people and you know, give them hard coaching.
- 35:46Speaker 7: I really am trying to ask myself though, and maybe
- 35:49Speaker 7: you guys have some insight in this, because I don't
- 35:51Speaker 7: want to like try to make a thing out of it.
- 35:52Speaker 7: But I just it seems to me almost like Bill
- 35:54Speaker 7: O'Brien is just in his own world doing his offense,
- 35:58Speaker 7: and I don't really remember Josh being quite as isolated
- 36:02Speaker 7: from like I haven't seen a lot of like Bill O'Brien,
- 36:04Speaker 7: Bill Belichick chatting it up on the you know, like
- 36:06Speaker 7: and I'm not trying to say that there's a rift
- 36:08Speaker 7: or anything like that. I just it's interesting. I almost
- 36:10Speaker 7: feel like Bill Belichick's been a little bit more hands off.
- 36:13Speaker 7: And I don't know if that's correct, because you guys
- 36:15Speaker 7: might have an observation, well that was kind of what
- 36:17Speaker 7: Josh did too. I don't remember clear.
- 36:18Speaker 1: I mean, you know, Bill is calling the plays, he's
- 36:21Speaker 1: off to like in an angle to the side, and
- 36:23Speaker 1: Bill is directly but Belichick is directly behind the play,
- 36:27Speaker 1: kind of looking at both the offense and the defense
- 36:30Speaker 1: seeing how that how everything is coming together. But you're right,
- 36:35Speaker 1: they don't. They're not next to each other a lot.
- 36:37Speaker 7: I think last year was striking too, because you had
- 36:39Speaker 7: so many situations where it was like Matt Patricia's got
- 36:42Speaker 7: a walkie talkie, Joe Judges got Bill Bell, everybody was
- 36:45Speaker 7: eyes on the offense, and it just felt all attention
- 36:47Speaker 7: was was on that. And this year it's just it's
- 36:50Speaker 7: just Bill make it work.
- 36:53Speaker 5: I think that's you know, I think partly, you know,
- 36:57Speaker 5: some of that stuff from last year. Last year, like
- 37:00Speaker 5: just the utter refusal to just say what they were doing,
- 37:02Speaker 5: and they had to hide it from the media. They
- 37:04Speaker 5: had to try to be koy, So we're gonna give
- 37:07Speaker 5: everybody a walkie talkie, and then ultimately it worked out
- 37:09Speaker 5: that no one knew who was in charge. You had
- 37:11Speaker 5: a guy calling plays who was also in charge of
- 37:13Speaker 5: the offensive line, and it just you look back, it
- 37:16Speaker 5: was grease bored. You look back back in it was
- 37:18Speaker 5: a really bad plan, a really bad plan. Now you
- 37:22Speaker 5: don't have to worry about there's no subterfuge, right, I mean,
- 37:25Speaker 5: everybody knows Bill Belichi, Bill O'Brien is the offensive coordinator.
- 37:28Speaker 5: The offensive coordinator calls the place like you don't have
- 37:30Speaker 5: to should we give him a Waukie talkie, should we give.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Will lag eff? You know?
- 37:36Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 37:36Speaker 8: I also I've actually thought that Bill O'Brien's been a
- 37:39Speaker 8: little bit more hands off him, just on his own, like,
- 37:41Speaker 8: regardless of interactions with Belichick, than what I was expecting.
- 37:45Speaker 8: I don't see when they're in team drills, he calls
- 37:49Speaker 8: the plays off to the side, and I don't see
- 37:51Speaker 8: a ton of coaching happening when guys are coming off
- 37:55Speaker 8: the field or anything like that. And I'm not saying
- 37:57Speaker 8: he's not coaching. I'm just saying I expected him to
- 38:00Speaker 8: be almost more in your face I guess, you know,
- 38:04Speaker 8: just based off his reputation of being somebody that has
- 38:07Speaker 8: a big personality and can get a little bit hot
- 38:10Speaker 8: under the collar. But he's been He's been pretty just
- 38:14Speaker 8: kind of stand offish at times. And I'm sure all
- 38:16Speaker 8: those corrections come when they watch the practice film and
- 38:20Speaker 8: they're in private, and maybe that's part of it, is
- 38:22Speaker 8: that they know he's kind of learned later on in
- 38:24Speaker 8: his career to not blow up in front of the
- 38:25Speaker 8: media and stuff like that.
- 38:27Speaker 7: But especially now, I think, because you can imagine what
- 38:30Speaker 7: kind of context that would add to everything we're saying,
- 38:33Speaker 7: if you just constantly lose in his mind it you know,
- 38:34Speaker 7: the offense and you know, reinforcing what we think we're seeing,
- 38:38Speaker 7: or we know.
- 38:38Speaker 1: The day that he loses it, you know it's going
- 38:40Speaker 1: to be headlines everywhere, you know, and he knows that. Yeah,
- 38:45Speaker 1: so yeah, he's probably making an effort to kind of
- 38:48Speaker 1: just play it even Keel.
- 38:50Speaker 6: Do we think if it continues looking like this leading
- 38:53Speaker 6: into the first preseason game here, that will actually see
- 38:56Speaker 6: a good amount of mac or Zappy like in that
- 39:01Speaker 6: game in the.
- 39:02Speaker 1: First preseason game? Would they should? Right because they need
- 39:07Speaker 1: the reps. But I don't know. Yeah, It's it's tough
- 39:12Speaker 1: because it's you know, when they had they had four
- 39:15Speaker 1: preseason games for so long, it was so predictable, like
- 39:18Speaker 1: who was going to play win, you know for the
- 39:20Speaker 1: most part. But now it's I think they're still figuring
- 39:25Speaker 1: that out, like how do we deal with these games
- 39:28Speaker 1: and you know, who should get what when? And uh,
- 39:31Speaker 1: you know this is only what the third year of
- 39:33Speaker 1: three preseason games or the second the second year? Yeah,
- 39:37Speaker 1: so like they're trying to figure that out.
- 39:39Speaker 7: Yeah, And I think it's important too. Last year with
- 39:41Speaker 7: some of the usage in the preseason games that I
- 39:44Speaker 7: forget specifics, but I remember Bill talking about they got
- 39:47Speaker 7: a lot of reps in joint practices, right, and that
- 39:51Speaker 7: makes up for it, right.
- 39:52Speaker 1: And I think that's why you see the increase in
- 39:55Speaker 1: joint practices now, you know, because.
- 39:58Speaker 8: It's a controlled climate. Yeah, so you don't have to
- 40:01Speaker 8: worry about the unknown because you just script the practices
- 40:04Speaker 8: with the other coaching staff together and it's you know
- 40:08Speaker 8: exactly what's going to happen, and it's you kind of
- 40:10Speaker 8: this is what we want to work on, this is
- 40:12Speaker 8: what they want to work on, whereas in a game,
- 40:14Speaker 8: it's just roll the ball out and see what happens.
- 40:17Speaker 8: So I think we'll see Mac in a little bit
- 40:19Speaker 8: throughout the preseason. I think I'm sure there'll be one
- 40:22Speaker 8: game will be like that true dress rehearsal game. But
- 40:24Speaker 8: I think he's going to get at least a driver,
- 40:26Speaker 8: at least a couple in all three.
- 40:28Speaker 5: I think so too, you know, Yeah, I don't think
- 40:31Speaker 5: he'll play much. I think he'll play like two or
- 40:33Speaker 5: three series like you did last year.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:36Speaker 5: I think what I'm sort of interested in is like,
- 40:39Speaker 5: does ZAPPI have to play? Does that be play a
- 40:43Speaker 5: ton or do they sort of give him like, Okay,
- 40:46Speaker 5: you're the backup, so we'll give you some time and
- 40:49Speaker 5: then let mcswell. We played like the bulk of the
- 40:51Speaker 5: second happen.
- 40:51Speaker 1: You said a couple series. I think they might do
- 40:53Speaker 1: half for Mac and half for Zappy.
- 40:55Speaker 5: I'd be stunned if that happened three games, not.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Maybe all three games, maybe the third game. Mac just
- 41:01Speaker 1: does a couple series, But I would say maybe these
- 41:04Speaker 1: first two games they share, they split the game, and
- 41:07Speaker 1: maybe even Mac if that happens.
- 41:10Speaker 5: If that happens, the competition. It's absolutely a competition. If
- 41:14Speaker 5: that happens. And he's not sold on who the starter is.
- 41:17Speaker 5: I'm just doing like you don't play your starter or
- 41:18Speaker 5: a half a game in the first two games of
- 41:21Speaker 5: the preseason.
- 41:21Speaker 8: I don't need to see what Zappi do that. But
- 41:25Speaker 8: I think for just for my advantage point in my eyes,
- 41:30Speaker 8: like it would help to see Zappy with the ones
- 41:34Speaker 8: like for like one series in a practice, just because
- 41:37Speaker 8: maybe I am maybe I'm being too hard on Mac,
- 41:39Speaker 8: like maybe maybe it's not work right right. So and
- 41:44Speaker 8: I'm not saying that Zappi is the answer either. I'm
- 41:46Speaker 8: just saying it's just somebody different. And my concern with
- 41:50Speaker 8: Mac is that his internal clock and his just willingness
- 41:55Speaker 8: to be aggressive and kind of like that playmaking gene,
- 41:59Speaker 8: whether it exists on a Josh Allen level or not.
- 42:02Speaker 8: I feel like last year might have broken him, and
- 42:04Speaker 8: now they're kind of putting a good point that the
- 42:06Speaker 8: pieces back together again and maybe over time and over
- 42:09Speaker 8: the next couple of weeks and the joints and all this,
- 42:12Speaker 8: and that it'll come back together again for him. But
- 42:15Speaker 8: I see Zappi right now throwing with a little bit
- 42:19Speaker 8: better anticipation than timing, and I wonder if that's Zappi
- 42:24Speaker 8: is just quicker through the read, or if is maybe
- 42:27Speaker 8: Mac needs to work it back to.
- 42:29Speaker 1: I don't see much difference, honestly, I do. I don't
- 42:32Speaker 1: notice that.
- 42:32Speaker 5: I don't know if Zapi is better overall, but I
- 42:36Speaker 5: definitely think he's better at that. And I didn't think that, Mike.
- 42:39Speaker 5: You and I talked about this a lot last year,
- 42:41Speaker 5: the differences between Mac like, I don't think there was
- 42:44Speaker 5: a whole lot of difference between his performance from year
- 42:47Speaker 5: one to year two, but I thought his pocket presence
- 42:50Speaker 5: was exactly the way I haven't described last year. I
- 42:52Speaker 5: didn't think that the rookie year. I thought, even like
- 42:56Speaker 5: the first game of the year, Miami went after him
- 42:58Speaker 5: all game long and cause him to make some kind
- 43:02Speaker 5: of scary plays. But he stayed with it. He stayed
- 43:05Speaker 5: like I thought he stayed poised. Last year, I don't
- 43:07Speaker 5: think he did. And I think Zappy does do a
- 43:10Speaker 5: better job of getting to me quick.
- 43:12Speaker 1: First year, he was coming off the field bloody. Remember
- 43:15Speaker 1: every game.
- 43:16Speaker 5: We're not talking about toughness, we're talking about.
- 43:19Speaker 1: But he was staying in there and taking the hit
- 43:21Speaker 1: and throwing the ball right.
- 43:23Speaker 5: And he took hits and stayed in the last year
- 43:25Speaker 5: with the ball, but not on time, is the point. Like,
- 43:28Speaker 5: I think he got the internal clock that would go
- 43:30Speaker 5: off and he would like take the sack or not
- 43:33Speaker 5: throw it where he was when he was supposed to.
- 43:35Speaker 5: Whereas I felt like he did a better job of
- 43:37Speaker 5: having poise in the pocket as a rookie. Now that
- 43:40Speaker 5: might be like a minor thing. Back to the playing
- 43:44Speaker 5: time the preseason, I think will will all be going
- 43:47Speaker 5: wild if if they split time, if they legitimately like
- 43:51Speaker 5: play one half each, I think we'll be going wild.
- 43:54Speaker 7: As a media group, What do you think me and
- 43:56Speaker 7: you'll be doing if McSorley plays the whole second half
- 43:58Speaker 7: of that last preseason game, Bruce Springsteen's playing about twenty
- 44:01Speaker 7: feet for us, we gotta watch.
- 44:03Speaker 5: Don't you worry about it this first of all? Listen,
- 44:05Speaker 5: don't you fret they very wisely space that out. Oh
- 44:10Speaker 5: it's Thursday night, Bruce, Friday night, Paul and Mike, Saturday night, Bruce.
- 44:15Speaker 7: Oh we're We're not a Bruce Springsteen concert.
- 44:17Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 44:18Speaker 5: I think we're in between. I might have the days right,
- 44:20Speaker 5: I was more I was I think we're in between.
- 44:22Speaker 5: But yeah, with no listen mcly I think it's really
- 44:27Speaker 5: interesting and I was actually talking about this with the
- 44:29Speaker 5: know what else today? Would Would you guys agree that
- 44:33Speaker 5: mcsoley has gotten the same amount of snaps roughly as
- 44:36Speaker 5: the other two? Yeah, I mean I've been at a
- 44:39Speaker 5: lot of camps. I have not seen the third quarterback
- 44:42Speaker 5: get as many snaps as everybody else very often.
- 44:45Speaker 3: Yeah, he definitely gets his fair share.
- 44:47Speaker 5: Now I'm not I'm not talking about the end of practice,
- 44:49Speaker 5: like after conditioning. I'm talking about the regular part of practice.
- 44:52Speaker 5: It's like seven on sevens. It's MAC for four plays,
- 44:56Speaker 5: Zappi for four plays, micsolely for four plays. Now MCS
- 45:00Speaker 5: playing with guys you know that probably aren't going to
- 45:03Speaker 5: be on the on the roster. But I'm telling you
- 45:06Speaker 5: I have not seen a third quarterback get as many
- 45:09Speaker 5: snaps he does.
- 45:10Speaker 8: We're really again, only six practices in. That's another thing
- 45:15Speaker 8: that is on my radar, like if this continues, continue,
- 45:20Speaker 8: if it continues, and if you watched a Tom Brady
- 45:26Speaker 8: training camp practice, because you know that's that's the thing
- 45:29Speaker 8: that we really have to go off of here that
- 45:31Speaker 8: all of us have seen. Brady would dominate the snaps
- 45:36Speaker 8: for practices, and their stories go that he would tell
- 45:40Speaker 8: the backup to get off the field. Sometimes he would
- 45:43Speaker 8: say didn't like what was going on. He'd take an
- 45:47Speaker 8: extra round, right.
- 45:48Speaker 5: And he has to yell at the offensive lineman, so
- 45:51Speaker 5: fat pigs.
- 45:52Speaker 8: If that's what an entrenched starter does. And we would
- 45:56Speaker 8: come out of practice and we would say, you know,
- 45:58Speaker 8: Brady had twenty five attempts, Hoyer had ten, Yeah, and
- 46:04Speaker 8: we're not saying that.
- 46:06Speaker 5: And the third guy would have three, right, which is
- 46:08Speaker 5: telling me when they even had three guys in camp,
- 46:10Speaker 5: sometimes they didn't.
- 46:11Speaker 8: Which is telling me that they're at least giving these
- 46:14Speaker 8: other guys opportunities. I'm not saying that it's opportunities with
- 46:17Speaker 8: the other frontline players, but it's at least opportunities that
- 46:22Speaker 8: are equal in terms of reps to the quote unquote starter.
- 46:26Speaker 5: So that first game I would expect to see more
- 46:28Speaker 5: of Mac than you would in the other two because
- 46:31Speaker 5: it's not following joint practices. But a whole half is
- 46:35Speaker 5: a lot for a starting quarterback, unless it's the number
- 46:38Speaker 5: of snaps is way down, Like if they don't play
- 46:40Speaker 5: well and they're going three and out and all of
- 46:42Speaker 5: a sudden, you know it's it's three series of three
- 46:44Speaker 5: and outs and here you are in the middle of
- 46:46Speaker 5: the second quarter. We got to get his reps in,
- 46:49Speaker 5: so that that's different. But overall, I'd be surprised if
- 46:53Speaker 5: he played that much in multiple games. Yeah, I'm not
- 46:56Speaker 5: even expecting Zappy to play that much.
- 46:58Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 46:59Speaker 6: I'm like, I'm like, if they if they still look
- 47:01Speaker 6: like this this time next week, it's like, I almost
- 47:05Speaker 6: think Max's gonna.
- 47:05Speaker 3: Play a half.
- 47:08Speaker 5: I think it can change too. You have one drive,
- 47:11Speaker 5: Like let's say they come out and they have one
- 47:12Speaker 5: drive and they put together a ten play seventy five
- 47:15Speaker 5: yard touchdown drive.
- 47:16Speaker 1: Yeah, like all right, take them out.
- 47:18Speaker 5: Yeah, it's one series they played, and it's not necessarily
- 47:21Speaker 5: because it was they played so well. It's because he
- 47:24Speaker 5: needs the reps. And that's the like, he's got to
- 47:27Speaker 5: get a certain amount of plays that Bill's going to
- 47:29Speaker 5: have in his mind, twelve to fifteen snaps some somewhere
- 47:32Speaker 5: along that line. Yeah, that's what he's gonna get. That
- 47:35Speaker 5: might be you know, two quarters, that might be one drive.
- 47:39Speaker 7: But it's also like, you know, it's of course quarterback
- 47:42Speaker 7: gets all the attention, but like who's gonna get all
- 47:43Speaker 7: the carries in the preseason. Who's gonna be playing fourth
- 47:45Speaker 7: quarter at the tackle spots?
- 47:47Speaker 5: Well, like, go back to this, So we're gonna have
- 47:48Speaker 5: Mac Jones play a whole half. Michael Wenner's not going
- 47:51Speaker 5: to play in any preseason games, right, Cole Strange is
- 47:55Speaker 5: probably all strange. It is probably right on the on
- 47:59Speaker 5: the cusp of not being available, and who knows what
- 48:02Speaker 5: Trent Brown's gonna do. So now you're going to have
- 48:04Speaker 5: your starting quarterback out there, potentially with three starters not
- 48:08Speaker 5: playing in front of him.
- 48:09Speaker 1: That could change things.
- 48:10Speaker 7: What do you think Can we talk about Trent Brown
- 48:12Speaker 7: for a sec because came here, got praised for a
- 48:14Speaker 7: purported early lost weight, was participating, then all of a
- 48:18Speaker 7: sudden yesterday he's back down to the lower field for
- 48:20Speaker 7: the last two days of conditioning.
- 48:21Speaker 1: What what is that?
- 48:22Speaker 7: Like, are you all of a sudden out of shape
- 48:24Speaker 7: again or why? Like I thought he was in and
- 48:26Speaker 7: he was playing and we're good, and now it seems
- 48:28Speaker 7: like there's either been a backstep or I mean, I
- 48:31Speaker 7: did speculate with Paul. I mean, this was you know,
- 48:35Speaker 7: I think I re said it. The running backs, the tackles,
- 48:36Speaker 7: like those are spots that they don't have a lot
- 48:38Speaker 7: of depth. But I just I really wonder what's going
- 48:41Speaker 7: on with Trent. I got a little of a backslide with.
- 48:43Speaker 1: I do too.
- 48:44Speaker 5: I mean, I think I think it's more than load management.
- 48:49Speaker 8: But I think it's sad I don't manage.
- 48:51Speaker 5: I don't know, I do. I think it's I think
- 48:54Speaker 5: he's upset, and I think Judon's upset too. I just
- 48:58Speaker 5: uh curious that whole situation.
- 49:01Speaker 1: All right, let's go to the A sticket upline eight
- 49:03Speaker 1: five five pats five hundred. Josh is in Dallas, what's up, Josh.
- 49:08Speaker 11: Hey, everyone, glad to have some football back to talk about.
- 49:13Speaker 11: I just wanted to say I really appreciate you guys'
- 49:15Speaker 11: coverage throughout training camp the last few years. You've you've
- 49:18Speaker 11: always been really honest and unbiased about what you're seeing,
- 49:21Speaker 11: even when it hasn't looked good. So I appreciate that,
- 49:25Speaker 11: and I just want to give Paul specifically some credit.
- 49:27Speaker 11: I think there have been a few players over the
- 49:29Speaker 11: last few years on the Patriots and just in the
- 49:32Speaker 11: league that you haven't been afraid to just evaluate the
- 49:36Speaker 11: talent and say you don't think they can in your words,
- 49:39Speaker 11: you don't think they can play. I think there is
- 49:40Speaker 11: a specific first round wide receiver that.
- 49:44Speaker 5: You might have been say. It sounds like you're talking
- 49:46Speaker 5: about nikil Harry. That's one of my that's one of
- 49:48Speaker 5: my better early impressions Ki Kuti. Yeah, not not not
- 49:52Speaker 5: kil Harry as Michael Jill.
- 49:55Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, for sure. But I just wanted to ask
- 49:58Speaker 11: over your of the years for all of you guys,
- 50:01Speaker 11: is there anybody that in training camp you might you
- 50:04Speaker 11: might have thought the same thing that they couldn't play,
- 50:07Speaker 11: and then when the season rolled around, they actually made
- 50:09Speaker 11: an impact or vice versa. They popped in camp and
- 50:14Speaker 11: then we're nowhere.
- 50:15Speaker 1: To be seen.
- 50:15Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, pop pop in camp, nowhere to be seen.
- 50:18Speaker 5: There's a lot of Chad Jackson's won absolutely Fred that's
- 50:22Speaker 5: a good one. I would say taekwon Thornton last year
- 50:25Speaker 5: is a good one. I thought he had a really
- 50:26Speaker 5: good camp and then we didn't see a whole lot
- 50:29Speaker 5: of him that he did get hurt in between there.
- 50:34Speaker 5: Zach Studtfeld was making plays all over the place in
- 50:37Speaker 5: training camp. First game of the year, Brady threw him
- 50:39Speaker 5: a pass when off his hands got picked.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Off and we never saw him again.
- 50:43Speaker 5: Damn Childress was he the preseason superstam Childress was always
- 50:46Speaker 5: he was in nothing.
- 50:48Speaker 12: What about Gentleman.
- 50:48Speaker 11: I don't think anybody could have projected maybe his career
- 50:51Speaker 11: and I know in some of the.
- 50:52Speaker 5: Settlement's a good one for the other way around. He
- 50:54Speaker 5: was sloppy as hell in his first camp. He couldn't
- 50:56Speaker 5: hold out of the ball, he couldn't stay on his feet,
- 50:59Speaker 5: and you kind of like that's I mean, it's it's
- 51:02Speaker 5: a nice little experiment.
- 51:03Speaker 1: They got going and he had some injury issues early
- 51:05Speaker 1: in his career.
- 51:06Speaker 5: That's a good that's a good one for the other
- 51:08Speaker 5: side that not a lot of us saw the impact.
- 51:10Speaker 5: Now he didn't have the impact as a rookie, no,
- 51:13Speaker 5: but obviously the impact.
- 51:14Speaker 1: That ended up having Wes Welkler was in front of
- 51:16Speaker 1: him correctly. Yeah, well.
- 51:19Speaker 7: That's what I said.
- 51:21Speaker 1: All right, Thanks Josh, Thanks Josh, appreciate the call.
- 51:23Speaker 5: You guys have any other guy, because you guys watched
- 51:25Speaker 5: camp forever to you have any other guy that stood
- 51:27Speaker 5: out to you that you thought was gonna be something
- 51:29Speaker 5: and then wait, way too many.
- 51:31Speaker 8: Guys that had great camps that disappeared.
- 51:34Speaker 7: I mean, there's gotta be at least what was your
- 51:37Speaker 7: Washington receiver.
- 51:39Speaker 1: Harris?
- 51:40Speaker 8: Yeah, great, great mini camp, pretty good first week of training.
- 51:44Speaker 8: Camp disappeared after he got hurt nicked up.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Who was the receiver Paul that came in? He was
- 51:50Speaker 1: like six to two. I mean, this guy was your produce,
- 51:53Speaker 1: Like he looked like a superstar receiver. And I don't
- 51:57Speaker 1: even know if he made out of camp. It was
- 52:00Speaker 1: like maybe ten years ago, like we were all like, wow,
- 52:03Speaker 1: this guy is like he looks he looks the part.
- 52:07Speaker 7: I forget his Oh man, it wasn't a Rutgers guy.
- 52:10Speaker 6: Was it.
- 52:11Speaker 1: I mean, he had a decent career before he he
- 52:14Speaker 1: we brought him. No, it wasn't Kenny Britt.
- 52:17Speaker 7: There was another guy from Rutgers that was like a
- 52:19Speaker 7: size no.
- 52:20Speaker 1: But this guy was He had a career before he
- 52:22Speaker 1: got here, like he had some production before he got here.
- 52:25Speaker 5: But that's why I was thinking, think, dude, maybe it
- 52:29Speaker 5: might have been him.
- 52:30Speaker 1: Anyway. Yeah, I remember when Robert Gallery came here and said, Oh,
- 52:35Speaker 1: this guy is gonna be perfect, you know, change the
- 52:37Speaker 1: scenery for this guy. He's going to be the perfect
- 52:39Speaker 1: and he was just awful.
- 52:41Speaker 7: Well, it was Chad Johnson. He was lost from the
- 52:44Speaker 7: get go. You never had intrigued in camp at all.
- 52:46Speaker 7: There was never a moment camp where you're like, oh,
- 52:48Speaker 7: this is gonna because Chad john he just never looked good.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Never looked good. Yeah nope, I mean never looked good
- 52:55Speaker 1: to the point of like balls were hitting him in
- 52:57Speaker 1: the helmet, you know, because he.
- 52:59Speaker 7: Wasn't embarrassing because he was so cocky and then to
- 53:02Speaker 7: come here and be so ennaped and I'm able to
- 53:04Speaker 7: find a role.
- 53:05Speaker 1: It was just he was just like a fish out
- 53:07Speaker 1: of water. It was the he had changed his personality
- 53:11Speaker 1: it was low key, it was it just it just
- 53:13Speaker 1: did not work. Yeah, it's too bad.
- 53:16Speaker 7: You could have maybe put him over the ash.
- 53:19Speaker 1: But you know, there's been there's been a handful of
- 53:21Speaker 1: guys that we thought, oh he could make it.
- 53:24Speaker 7: And we'll see what happens with pot Douglas, you know.
- 53:27Speaker 7: I mean, I think he's one that he's popping right
- 53:30Speaker 7: now as everyone's written. You know, we'll see if it translates.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, let's go back to the phones. Williams
- 53:38Speaker 1: and Philim. What's up? William?
- 53:41Speaker 12: Hey, Hey, how.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Y'all doing all right?
- 53:45Speaker 12: It's just two takes out. I just want to get
- 53:47Speaker 12: y'all some flowers first in this month. I just want
- 53:50Speaker 12: to say y'all and do an excellent job, you know,
- 53:52Speaker 12: great coverage and missing to y'all since y'all have been
- 53:55Speaker 12: telling us about as far as you know, how the
- 53:57Speaker 12: pictures look on the field and whatnot. And also it's
- 53:59Speaker 12: into to marror to you know, excellent job with the
- 54:02Speaker 12: coverage too, you know, I didn't want to be out.
- 54:04Speaker 12: So just great jobs, stamps, just all of y'all doing
- 54:06Speaker 12: a great job.
- 54:07Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 54:10Speaker 12: Well, see so one is I said, how do I
- 54:14Speaker 12: say this all right, I got usually I call it
- 54:16Speaker 12: pigs about the wide receivers, and I don't need to
- 54:19Speaker 12: touch that subject because y'all see it for yourself. So
- 54:21Speaker 12: I'll just say this when I'll say something about the
- 54:23Speaker 12: tackle position, and I want to say something about whatever,
- 54:26Speaker 12: but what's his name? Evan said about as far as
- 54:30Speaker 12: Bailey Zaffies concerned, So I'll just start the offensive tackle just.
- 54:35Speaker 6: This.
- 54:36Speaker 12: This is gonna be really bad if they don't straighten
- 54:38Speaker 12: this out when you had a chance to to, you know,
- 54:41Speaker 12: take care of that and in the draft and whatnot.
- 54:44Speaker 12: I don't know why you didn't get Paris Johnson. I'm
- 54:46Speaker 12: not hating on Christian guns Dillis. Look, I'm a fan,
- 54:50Speaker 12: all right, but we you got to protect Matt, you know,
- 54:53Speaker 12: and you had a chance to do that, and you
- 54:55Speaker 12: ain't get no tackle like now, but you've got a
- 54:58Speaker 12: bunch of guards center and special team is. I was like,
- 55:01Speaker 12: oh my god, what are you doing through? But that's
- 55:05Speaker 12: my take on that one. And Evan, I just want
- 55:08Speaker 12: to say this to you, Okay, I hear what you're saying,
- 55:11Speaker 12: and I totally agree with you, but you do understand
- 55:14Speaker 12: what happened in the last time these fatures. Fans saw
- 55:18Speaker 12: Baillie zamby and he made a couple of plates. They
- 55:21Speaker 12: started rooting next to you know, you already know how
- 55:23Speaker 12: that went. So you want to repeat the same situation again.
- 55:28Speaker 8: It's a fair point. And I all I've said to
- 55:31Speaker 8: just reiterate is all I'm ready to do is see
- 55:36Speaker 8: like one series in a practice of Bailly Zapi with
- 55:39Speaker 8: the ones. I'm not saying that you should start over
- 55:42Speaker 8: Mac Jones or anything like that. This is more it's
- 55:47Speaker 8: more about Mac than is about Zabi, right, It's just
- 55:50Speaker 8: more about what I haven't seen from Mac and me
- 55:53Speaker 8: saying that I think Zapi would be so much better.
- 55:56Speaker 8: I just I don't know. Once that you see, this
- 55:59Speaker 8: is a lot of corequarterbacks in the league that are
- 56:02Speaker 8: promising young guys. Baker Mayfield, like, once that clock gets broken,
- 56:06Speaker 8: and once you you start to get just squeamish in
- 56:11Speaker 8: the pocket and worried about pressure and worried about throwing
- 56:14Speaker 8: interceptions and like that kind of stuff, it's really difficult
- 56:18Speaker 8: to recalibrate your internal clock. And I think with Mac
- 56:23Speaker 8: that's the struggle that's that's going on with him, is
- 56:26Speaker 8: that he's trying to basically undo what happened to him
- 56:30Speaker 8: last year could be could be.
- 56:33Speaker 1: I would definitely the three second sessions.
- 56:35Speaker 8: I would literally thanks for the call.
- 56:37Speaker 3: I would literally have so much PTSD.
- 56:39Speaker 6: If I came back from an injury, went back into
- 56:42Speaker 6: a game, someone pulled me out of the game and
- 56:44Speaker 6: heard fans chanting the way I mean in your home
- 56:46Speaker 6: stadium at that.
- 56:49Speaker 7: I would say too, though, I just I think to
- 56:52Speaker 7: William's point, it became a thing of like there's people
- 56:55Speaker 7: who are Zappi fans and like I don't really care,
- 56:58Speaker 7: Like I just want to see good quarterback And it's
- 57:00Speaker 7: not about like wanting Zappi or thinking that like everything
- 57:04Speaker 7: Evan said is true, and I mean we said it
- 57:06Speaker 7: right at to start a practice, you want someone to
- 57:07Speaker 7: do well, right, that's just at what point do you
- 57:09Speaker 7: want to see, you know, something different, just to see
- 57:11Speaker 7: how it looks. And you know, I think it's it's reasonable, certainly,
- 57:14Speaker 7: you know, I think once we get into the middle
- 57:16Speaker 7: of the field and you really get a sense of
- 57:17Speaker 7: just like the general regular you know, plus fifty offense
- 57:21Speaker 7: that that they're going to run because it's been so
- 57:22Speaker 7: specific right now where you're either in the red zone
- 57:25Speaker 7: or you're focusing on screens or you're kind of focusing
- 57:27Speaker 7: on the run game a little bit more so it's
- 57:29Speaker 7: hard to get that true read. But you know, I
- 57:31Speaker 7: think that's what I'm kind of waiting for. Maybe tomorrow
- 57:33Speaker 7: the pads come on, they put the ball out to
- 57:35Speaker 7: twenty and say, you know you're going the other way
- 57:37Speaker 7: and you know those are That's what I'd like to see.
- 57:40Speaker 7: Is Max still squeamish? Is he able to maybe hit
- 57:42Speaker 7: on some of those throws he tried today to, you know,
- 57:44Speaker 7: to Bourne and the fifty to fifty ball that the parker.
- 57:47Speaker 7: Can there be more of that? Can they find somebody open?
- 57:49Speaker 7: So I that's that's where I'm at. I want to
- 57:51Speaker 7: see that.
- 57:52Speaker 1: How many practices do we have before the first preseasone?
- 57:55Speaker 1: Like seven more press?
- 57:56Speaker 7: Well, they'll be I guess what tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday, and
- 57:59Speaker 7: then in stadium which we don't know what what degree
- 58:02Speaker 7: of count and then they'll probably be off Saturday and
- 58:05Speaker 7: then it's you know, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, maybe would be
- 58:08Speaker 7: three two to three more seven more. So they got
- 58:12Speaker 7: they got a few. I mean last year, last year
- 58:14Speaker 7: they had the two days off, they had Saturday and
- 58:16Speaker 7: Sunday off last year, so maybe maybe just Monday Tuesday,
- 58:20Speaker 7: we'll see.
- 58:21Speaker 1: Uh, let's go to Christian in LA. What's up Christian?
- 58:27Speaker 13: Happy Tuesday? And I wish I could be on the
- 58:29Speaker 13: East coast that training camp with you guys, But you
- 58:32Speaker 13: guys are doing an amazing job of covering really quick.
- 58:36Speaker 13: I'm going to say something in this controversial and you
- 58:38Speaker 13: guys are going to probably to it. But I've been
- 58:41Speaker 13: thinking about it all summer and and here goes. I
- 58:44Speaker 13: think the writing is on the wall with with Max.
- 58:47Speaker 13: Personality wise, he's a winer and complainer. We saw that
- 58:50Speaker 13: last year. Doesn't really have that that it's fact as
- 58:53Speaker 13: far as being a leader and ability wise, he's got
- 58:58Speaker 13: the happy feed already and he's of, you know a
- 59:00Speaker 13: little bit of it. And if I just heard that's
- 59:02Speaker 13: really nearly impossible to undo with a young with the
- 59:06Speaker 13: young players, how about we do that. We package Amy disgruntled,
- 59:11Speaker 13: Kendrick Bourne and Mac Jones. We get into them off
- 59:14Speaker 13: to the toy nine.
- 59:15Speaker 12: Ers portray lance, share me apart if you will, I'll
- 59:19Speaker 12: take it up the air.
- 59:20Speaker 13: Let's continue enjoying training, can guide and football.
- 59:24Speaker 5: It's not New York, not I don't think going.
- 59:27Speaker 8: To I love and honestly, but that's that's like a
- 59:32Speaker 8: Madden trade to me, Like, it's just it just is
- 59:36Speaker 8: not a realistic.
- 59:36Speaker 7: There's been some rough practice footage of Trey Lance this year.
- 59:39Speaker 1: I mean, well, if the forty nine ers would do that,
- 59:43Speaker 1: that means they're all in on brock Party. And if
- 59:46Speaker 1: they're all in in brock Purty, why would they want
- 59:47Speaker 1: back John?
- 59:48Speaker 8: Yeah, I just it's not a real trade.
- 59:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not.
- 59:51Speaker 8: It's no disrespected now.
- 59:53Speaker 1: I'm trying to like entertain it, you know, and I
- 59:56Speaker 1: don't think it makes sense for the forty nine ers.
- 59:59Speaker 7: I think the bigger car is how many teams would
- 1:00:01Speaker 7: want Mac Jones.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: As their quarterback.
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: You know, Who's like, who's willing to make that?
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Well, they wouldn't do it unless they believe in Rock Purdy.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: I don't think you know, so, I.
- 1:00:09Speaker 8: Well, I mean.
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: I agree with you overall, but like they don't believe
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: in Trey Lance, right if they're gonna if they're looking
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: to trade them, so what's the difference. You're gonna have
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: a backup quarterback that you don't believe in.
- 1:00:22Speaker 7: Yeah, that's why I think. I don't think you'd have
- 1:00:25Speaker 7: to trade Mac Jones and Kendrick Burton to get Trey Lance.
- 1:00:27Speaker 7: Probably you could probably get.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: I missed that part.
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: No, you're just talking about a straight up Mac Jones,
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: which it was born and Mac d No.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: I think you could.
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: You don't have to do that.
- 1:00:37Speaker 7: You could probably trade.
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: Matter of fact, I don't think the Patriots would do
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: it because Trey Lance has done nothing in the NFL.
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: He hasn't played, he's probably done anything. Like Mac Jones
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: at least has two years of experience. He's at a
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: far higher level in terms of experience in the league.
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: I am like Evan, I am intrigued by Trey Lance's
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: skill set, but the guy hasn't been able to, you know,
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: play two games in a row.
- 1:00:57Speaker 8: If you're telling me that you're gonna get Trey Lance
- 1:01:00Speaker 8: to push Mac Jones or to like come here and
- 1:01:04Speaker 8: be yeah instead of Trace mcsorily you had Trey Lance
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: and yeah, it'd be all four. But like Paul said,
- 1:01:11Speaker 8: the experience and stuff like that, you can't just give
- 1:01:13Speaker 8: up on that for for Trey Lance at this point.
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: As much as I liked them coming out, not enough games.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: L from Wisconsin. Everything we have been led to believe.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Says that Max should be better third year in and
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: his QB coach last year did a good enough job
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: to get a promotion. Why aren't we seeing it?
- 1:01:32Speaker 7: That's that's what we're trying to figure out.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: That's kind of circas.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: I think.
- 1:01:37Speaker 6: I think it's like you can't like you can see,
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: someone can have all the potential in the in the world,
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: but like only they are the ones that are able
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: to like control how productive they are. Like you can
- 1:01:52Speaker 6: coach somebody up all you want. They can have the potential,
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: but like it's up to them whether they go from
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: potential to production.
- 1:01:58Speaker 7: It's like, I mean, I mean, I I think I've
- 1:02:00Speaker 7: broken back down a couple times like this. It's just
- 1:02:02Speaker 7: it's a great example of like, no matter how hard
- 1:02:04Speaker 7: you work, you can't work your way to special. And
- 1:02:06Speaker 7: like you know, you're either special you're not special.
- 1:02:08Speaker 8: And that's the biggest thing. There's nothing special about this
- 1:02:11Speaker 8: offense besides maybe Bill O'Brien. I think Bill O'Brien is
- 1:02:15Speaker 8: a really good offensive coordinator. I think it's wait until
- 1:02:18Speaker 8: we see it in him game plan for an opponent
- 1:02:20Speaker 8: in a game. I can't say he's special yet, but
- 1:02:22Speaker 8: I think he's really good offensive coordinator, but they're they're line,
- 1:02:26Speaker 8: their receivers and their quarterback. None of them are special.
- 1:02:29Speaker 8: And if you don't have something that's special, then it's
- 1:02:32Speaker 8: gonna be tough. And I think that that's maybe, but
- 1:02:36Speaker 8: I think that's the biggest thing with Mac. It's not
- 1:02:38Speaker 8: that he's been terrible, and I feel I know, I
- 1:02:40Speaker 8: feel like I'm ragging on him, so I'm trying to
- 1:02:41Speaker 8: like say some nice things. It's not that he's been terrible,
- 1:02:45Speaker 8: but he's just been kind of there, Like he's just
- 1:02:48Speaker 8: been kind of fine. And if everybody is just kind
- 1:02:52Speaker 8: of fine, then you're just gonna have a whole lot
- 1:02:54Speaker 8: of fine. And that's just not really gonna.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: Be I mean, Evan's right.
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: It's like I go in the locker room like before
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: a game, and I'm talking to the defense, like, oh, like,
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: what's challenging about playing Josh Allen. They can run through
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: all the things like oh, his arms, his legs, his weapons,
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: et cetera. If I went in there and asked them
- 1:03:12Speaker 6: the same questions about Mac Jones, I mean, obviously they
- 1:03:15Speaker 6: would say something nice because that's their teammate. But like
- 1:03:17Speaker 6: if I went into the opposing team's locker room. If
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: I went into Josh Allen's defense and was like, Hey,
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: you're playing Mac Jones this week. What's challenging about while
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: playing that offense?
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: Maybe maybe what's the answer.
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: Maybe you got a source in the Pittsburgh locker room
- 1:03:29Speaker 7: you can ask them before.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: But what will be there?
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Seriously? Like what got a good head on the show? Smart?
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: You know how to get him in the right play,
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: gets the ball out quick?
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I bet?
- 1:03:38Speaker 7: I mean even these things that we're saying haven't don't
- 1:03:41Speaker 7: really manifest They'll.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Come up with stuff, but is it really true? You know,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: like do they really believe that? And it gets back
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: to are the Patriots too easy to defend?
- 1:03:50Speaker 6: You know?
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I hate to say it, but it's that's That's what
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: it hasn't been.
- 1:03:55Speaker 8: How many more years are we going to do?
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: Like?
- 1:03:58Speaker 8: That drives me?
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: That's what's going on. That's I think there's nothing that
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: puts fear, nothing in another team. Nothing I can you
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: know what I'll do. Bridgestone ready because it's the official

- 1:13:35Speaker 1: History. Interesting. I want to check out this caller on
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: the aceticket hotline. Roger. Oh, I thought you were going
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: with Sweet Rogers and Foxboro. What's up, Roger?
- 1:13:45Speaker 12: Are you guys done?
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: It's Andy Hart.
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: We haven't heard from you since the preseason.
- 1:13:54Speaker 7: We're just about to talk about fullback stances.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: We didn't, yeah, three point stances versus you know, did
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: you take a.
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: Wide stance with Bill yesterday? Talk? You know that's my
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: take a little wide stance with Bill though, Yeah, I imagine.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Unfortunately, that's the best question you asked.
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: That's another great moment.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: All right back here and Patriots Unfiltered. It's Deuce, Tamara, Evan,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: Paul Me, Matt Nabooth, Deuce and Tomorrow went up to
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: get a little food because we're kind of hungry. But
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: let's go to some of these emails that have been
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: coming in. Oh live re first. Okay, Hey Patriots fans,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: if you want to see Toyota's best offers, including those
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: not seen on TV, go to buy a Toyota dot com.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: It's Toyota's official website for deals from the official vehicle
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: of the New England Patriots, Toyota. Let's go places and
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: from what I understand, not just Toyota, but if you're
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: training in your car these days, you get a lot
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: of money. Problem is then you got to turn around
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: and buy a car. And there are a lot of
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: money too, yeah, car car markets, cars and houses. You
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: get a lot of money if you sell, but then
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: you gotta you gotta buy something. Anyway, Go to buy
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: a Toyota dot com if you need a car.
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: Kyle writes in from Pembroke. From what I'm hearing, Connor
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: McDermott has been a decent and solid at right tackle.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: If he can stay healthy and be serviceable, do you
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: think he calms the worry at the tackle position or
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: is the left side still a concern.
- 1:15:29Speaker 8: I still think the right side is a concern.
- 1:15:33Speaker 5: And I would say that Evan's saying that he's probably
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: at the at the high end of the list of
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: Connor McDermott fans based on practice. I think you've a
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: couple of.
- 1:15:42Speaker 8: Times Mmott is done. Still can't shake the fact that
- 1:15:47Speaker 8: he's Connor McDermott. But we got to see it in games.
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:15:52Speaker 8: We go into Week one and the Eagles got a
- 1:15:54Speaker 8: Son reddick on the one side and I blanking on
- 1:15:57Speaker 8: their other editor but they got two good ad drushers
- 1:15:59Speaker 8: like they're to be coming off both sides every week,
- 1:16:02Speaker 8: it seems like nowadays.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: So we'll see yeap uh Tyler from Providence writes in
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: I have a bold twenty twenty three and beyond prediction,
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: under the guidance of Billy Oh, the Patriots will make
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: an AFC Championship appearance, beating the Chiefs in the divisional
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: round with an efficient offense, but losing to the eventual
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: Super Bowl champion Cincinnati Bungals. Even bolder prediction, Bill O'Brien
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: uses his championship appearance to get a job as the
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: head coach of the Lions next year in trading Jared
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: Goffin picks for Matt Jones. The boldest prediction, the Patriots
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: win it all in twenty twenty four with Jared goff
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: Belichick then becomes the first coach to win a Super
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: Bowl with a quarterback he probably he'd previously beaten in
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: a Super Bowl.
- 1:16:44Speaker 8: Poor Dan Campbell just kind of caught a stray out
- 1:16:46Speaker 8: of nowhere.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: Yeah, that is kind of a bold prediction, which one
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: and unlikely all of them?
- 1:16:53Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: I mean to categorize the twenty four Super Bowl as
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: the bold like all of those things are.
- 1:17:01Speaker 8: I think the baldest one white Bill O'Brien becoming the
- 1:17:04Speaker 8: head coach of the White Bolts.
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: Absolutely, although I'm not sold on the I'm not sold
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: on Dan Campbell.
- 1:17:09Speaker 8: Right, But if you're gonna go, Ben Johnson's probably one
- 1:17:11Speaker 8: of the best young offensive coordinators in the league, So like,
- 1:17:14Speaker 8: why wouldn't you just make him the.
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: Head They went out of their way to keep them.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Yeah, this year.
- 1:17:18Speaker 8: Ben Johnson's good at his job.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: No matter what you say about Dan Campbell, he's likable.
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: I enjoy him. I liked him in hard Knocks. I
- 1:17:28Speaker 7: mean I don't like him.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: I mean he's kind of a harder, but he is
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: what he is always. But he loves football, he loves
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: his players. You know, you can't not like him.
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: He might be a likable guy. I don't like him
- 1:17:40Speaker 5: as a coach. Yeah, I don't know how like the
- 1:17:42Speaker 5: way he coached. I don't know how capable is.
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: But I like him.
- 1:17:45Speaker 7: There's always gonna be coaches like that, right, Just think
- 1:17:48Speaker 7: that's just such a like coaching stereotype of that kind
- 1:17:51Speaker 7: of just hard.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: And on the way up.
- 1:17:53Speaker 16: We're gonna buy a kneecap off, all right, We're gonna stand.
- 1:17:56Speaker 8: Up school coach like I just I think it. Maybe
- 1:17:59Speaker 8: it's more or like what Paul's saying is that like
- 1:18:01Speaker 8: him as an actual coach is why I feel. But
- 1:18:04Speaker 8: the personality thing is just it doesn't do it for me.
- 1:18:07Speaker 8: The kneecaps and all that.
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: I don't like it either. I agree.
- 1:18:09Speaker 8: I'm just not can you coach or can you not?
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: But we'll see this year. I feel like Kevin and
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: Michigan when Brady was here, we never had these types
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: of identity issues on offense, even with Garoppolo Brissett. This
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: castle why, all of a sudden does it seem like
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: we can't have a functioning offense. Screen short games used
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: to be our bread and butter. Now we can't even
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: run a proper screen. It just can't be because Brady
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: isn't here. What's changed?
- 1:18:34Speaker 7: Well, I mean it's a quarterback. Like I don't like
- 1:18:37Speaker 7: this this identity thing. It's your quarterback, Like, that's who
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: your identity. I mean, how many teams in the NFL
- 1:18:43Speaker 7: that are good their identity isn't their quarterback?
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: Like that's what it is. That's what this league is.
- 1:18:47Speaker 7: I don't, you know, I just think that we're getting
- 1:18:50Speaker 7: too caught up and you know, trying to find out
- 1:18:52Speaker 7: what you are. You're you're one of the teams in
- 1:18:54Speaker 7: the NFL that's looking to find a starting quarterback that
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: can lead you to wins against good teams and get
- 1:18:58Speaker 7: you into the playoffs and win playoff games. And that's
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: what they're searching for right now. And they're they're, you know,
- 1:19:03Speaker 7: not alone in that kind of like that. You talk
- 1:19:05Speaker 7: about the Lions, what's their identity? Maybe it's Dan Campbell,
- 1:19:08Speaker 7: but otherwise right now, it's jerk goff and sometimes he's
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: good and sometimes he's not good, and that's what they're
- 1:19:12Speaker 7: dealing with too.
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: You know, well, you know it's rare that an offensive
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: identity isn't the quarterback, but.
- 1:19:19Speaker 8: It can happen, you know, with like like Derrick Henry special,
- 1:19:23Speaker 8: but like San Francisco's offensive identity in my mind is
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: Kyle Shanahan. Right, So this goes back to what you
- 1:19:30Speaker 8: got to have something that's special. Like the forty nine
- 1:19:33Speaker 8: ers have special skill talent, they have a really good
- 1:19:35Speaker 8: offensive line, and they have a really really special offensive
- 1:19:39Speaker 8: mind running the ship. But I just when you ask
- 1:19:43Speaker 8: about the screen game and stuff like that, I think
- 1:19:44Speaker 8: Paul brought up a really really valid point about cut
- 1:19:47Speaker 8: blocking and how much that's changed the screen game. But
- 1:19:50Speaker 8: I would also say, if you're not respecting anything down
- 1:19:53Speaker 8: the field, it becomes a whole lot easier to play
- 1:19:56Speaker 8: screens when you know that all they can do well
- 1:19:58Speaker 8: is screen you. And I think that that's really what
- 1:20:01Speaker 8: happened last year. We heard it from like opposing defensive
- 1:20:04Speaker 8: I think it was a ban Joseph or someone like
- 1:20:06Speaker 8: that was like, yeah, yeah, right, and all it is
- 1:20:09Speaker 8: if all it is is quick game and screen, quick
- 1:20:12Speaker 8: game and screen, and then you're just what you can
- 1:20:15Speaker 8: just crack the line of scrimmage and if he throws
- 1:20:17Speaker 8: they throw a screen, you're just gonna be all over it.
- 1:20:19Speaker 8: So until the Patriots can prove they can consistently push
- 1:20:23Speaker 8: the ball ten plus yards down the field, then obviously
- 1:20:27Speaker 8: these teams are just gonna be sitting all over screens
- 1:20:30Speaker 8: and underneath throws and things like that.
- 1:20:32Speaker 7: It's an interesting exercise because it's like, you know, we
- 1:20:34Speaker 7: just name very specific instances of teams that aren't the quarterback,
- 1:20:38Speaker 7: and I'm trying to think of any like great one.
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: Shan Ann totally, Henry definitely one. But like as you
- 1:20:44Speaker 7: get there's few of those to fine. Like otherwise, there's
- 1:20:47Speaker 7: just a huge chunk of teams that are just trying
- 1:20:49Speaker 7: to figure out a quarterback. And once they find that guy,
- 1:20:52Speaker 7: look at the Bills, all of a sudden, Josh Allen
- 1:20:54Speaker 7: is their identity. You know what, what are the Jets
- 1:20:57Speaker 7: identity gonna be this year? Is it gonna be their
- 1:20:58Speaker 7: young stars? Is going to be Aaron Rodgers? Probably Aaron
- 1:21:02Speaker 7: Rodgers unless those guys you know, all step up and
- 1:21:05Speaker 7: you know, play crazy good.
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: But right that's the expectation. Christian says, this is a
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: Christian from Charlotte, North Carolina. This team is not going
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: to be relevant until they get rid of Bill. He
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: believes that offense is irrelevant and he's going to die
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: on that hill. The team at best will be eight
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: and nine between no tackles or receiver talent. This team
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: each day is giving me less hope. I hope they
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: proved me wrong. We are or we are in for
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: a long season.
- 1:21:33Speaker 8: I think there is, as the person that's probably been
- 1:21:36Speaker 8: the most negative on this show as anybody, the hope
- 1:21:39Speaker 8: that I see with the team if you want to
- 1:21:42Speaker 8: you know, rebellions are built on hope, right, so if
- 1:21:44Speaker 8: you want to have a little bit of hope is that.
- 1:21:46Speaker 8: I think coaching wise, they've gotten back to being a
- 1:21:49Speaker 8: really well coached team on both sides of the football,
- 1:21:52Speaker 8: and that still counts for something. If they're really they're
- 1:21:56Speaker 8: schemming it up well on offense, and they're they're timing
- 1:21:59Speaker 8: and they're exe cution is cleaning even if they don't
- 1:22:01Speaker 8: have the best players, and then defensively, I think they
- 1:22:04Speaker 8: do have good players and then they do also have
- 1:22:06Speaker 8: good coaching that you're looking at a team. That best
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: case scenario to me still is twenty twenty one. Well,
- 1:22:12Speaker 8: a ten win team, that's a wildcard team in the play.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: The danger is you say, well, they were eight and
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: nine last year and they made all those mistakes. Now
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: they have better coaching, so they won't make the mistakes,
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: so that means two more wins. But the schedule is
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: so much tougher.
- 1:22:24Speaker 8: This right, and that's why I can't get to the
- 1:22:27Speaker 8: ten wins is because of the schedule, and you need
- 1:22:29Speaker 8: to have great players in order to beat great teams, right,
- 1:22:33Speaker 8: And that's just the difference.
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: So they could be make less mistakes, but because the
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: opponents are better, they still could end up at well.
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: When you're also making an assumption that if you didn't
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: make the mistakes that they made last year, they would
- 1:22:43Speaker 5: have won those games, like that's not all Like just
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: because you don't have you know, three fallse star penalties
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: doesn't mean you win the game. Like obviously they consistently
- 1:22:54Speaker 5: shut themselves in the foot last year, but it's not
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: like they.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: Moved the ball.
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: They moved the ball. They moved the ball, then the
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: would get a penalty and they stop and at the
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: puns they went three and out I think fourth most
- 1:23:03Speaker 5: in the league something like that.
- 1:23:06Speaker 8: Right, But if they had Bill O'Brien running the offense last.
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: No, that's valid, say I Like, there's a lot of
- 1:23:11Speaker 5: people that say, well, the special teams cost them this
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: and the mistakes of that, and that's not gonna happen again.
- 1:23:18Speaker 5: Probably not. You probably are not gonna go up to
- 1:23:20Speaker 5: kickoff returns for touchdowns in the same game again, right,
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: But who's to say, like, you're gonna score I don't know,
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: eight defensive touchdown how many defenser touchdowns they have last year?
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: Dugger head three alone. Yeah, you're gonna score all those
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: Like those kinds of things even out, Like you do
- 1:23:36Speaker 5: some dumb things, you commit some pre snap penalties. The
- 1:23:40Speaker 5: next year, that'll even out, but something else will happen,
- 1:23:42Speaker 5: Like I agree with Evans's point, Like it's just at
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: some point you got to look at the roster and
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: look at the talent and say, does that team have
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: more talent than this team? And if that's the case
- 1:23:53Speaker 5: more often than not, which I think it will be
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: thirteen maybe twelve times this year. That's asking a lot
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: of your coaching staff, Like you got to go out
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: and win US four or five games because of our
- 1:24:04Speaker 5: game plan and our preparation. That's hard.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: Christ and Virginia. Hearing everything out of camp just reminds
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: me of last year, even the comments that'll get better
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: and once they get into the games, they'll figure it out.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: I'm a big Mac fan, but the timing issue that
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: Evan is talking about is what my big thing was
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: last year and now it's the same. My concern level
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: is four out of ten. We need a better wide receiver.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: I'd give Nikhil Harrie a call that once for Paul
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: and Evan.
- 1:24:31Speaker 8: Yeah, I just I don't know. I think it's important
- 1:24:35Speaker 8: to keep saying that the my concerns about this offense
- 1:24:40Speaker 8: this year are significantly different than they were last year.
- 1:24:43Speaker 8: Whether that makes you feel better or not is up
- 1:24:45Speaker 8: to you. But last year, the offensive system was broken.
- 1:24:50Speaker 8: The system was broken. There was zero trust in what
- 1:24:53Speaker 8: they were doing. They had guys running into each other,
- 1:24:56Speaker 8: they had zero spacing. They didn't know how to pick
- 1:24:59Speaker 8: up a blitz from a a pre snap standpoint. They're
- 1:25:01Speaker 8: getting the line of scrimmage, they have no they're they
- 1:25:04Speaker 8: don't they're not pointing in the right direction, they don't
- 1:25:06Speaker 8: know who's got to like that was a broken system.
- 1:25:09Speaker 8: This is a clean operation that I just am not
- 1:25:13Speaker 8: sold on the talent that is actually going out there
- 1:25:15Speaker 8: and trying to execute what they're putting together.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: Kyle says, I agree with Evan about putting Zappi in
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: with the ones, but for a different reason. We've all
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: heard about Max fire and competitiveness, and if he gets
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: put with the twos, it could ignite that fire and
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: help him fix his clock that way.
- 1:25:32Speaker 7: I mean, I think that that's that kind of speaks
- 1:25:34Speaker 7: to the you know, Bill's refusal to say Mac Jones
- 1:25:37Speaker 7: is our starter, like, I think he loves it. I mean,
- 1:25:38Speaker 7: I think he wants there even if you know, I
- 1:25:41Speaker 7: mean I hesitate to say that even if Mac was
- 1:25:43Speaker 7: well established and was just you know, firing darts all
- 1:25:45Speaker 7: over the place, that he wouldn't. But I just think
- 1:25:47Speaker 7: generally he likes to keep that fire burning hot and
- 1:25:50Speaker 7: keeping you know, don't give him that like, oh, he said,
- 1:25:53Speaker 7: I'm the starter, so I'm the starter, And you know,
- 1:25:55Speaker 7: I think he wants to keep that element of doubt
- 1:25:57Speaker 7: in Max's mind. And I think, you know, Evan has
- 1:25:59Speaker 7: a good point of why. I mean, I don't think
- 1:26:01Speaker 7: he's played to a point where he's solidified himself as
- 1:26:05Speaker 7: the you know, as the no question starter. It's you know,
- 1:26:07Speaker 7: and I don't. I don't know what to make of
- 1:26:09Speaker 7: them sorely snaps of it all.
- 1:26:11Speaker 6: But I'm wondering because you know, for some people that
- 1:26:14Speaker 6: is the case, where like when you take something away
- 1:26:16Speaker 6: from them and you put somebody else in it, it
- 1:26:18Speaker 6: does light a fire under you and it makes you
- 1:26:20Speaker 6: want to work really.
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: Hard and prove that it's yours.
- 1:26:23Speaker 6: But then for others, when you do that, it kind
- 1:26:25Speaker 6: of makes you shut down, like they don't do well
- 1:26:27Speaker 6: with adversity in the sense that like it kind of
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: makes him insecure. And so I'm like wondering if this
- 1:26:34Speaker 6: uncertainty and this lack of like ability to claim him
- 1:26:40Speaker 6: as the starter, is that like taking.
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: Away from his confidence too.
- 1:26:43Speaker 6: I would like, would it make him more confident if
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: he knew, like, hey, my coach is backing me and
- 1:26:48Speaker 6: like vocally telling the world I'm the starter.
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:26:50Speaker 7: Now, I think it's a fair debate. I mean, I
- 1:26:52Speaker 7: also just say I think Mac has been dealing with
- 1:26:54Speaker 7: this kind of coaching his whole career, going back to
- 1:26:56Speaker 7: you know, high school when he was in Florida. Similar
- 1:26:59Speaker 7: hard ass a coach that you know wanted things done
- 1:27:01Speaker 7: his way and you know, not wanted to throw flowers
- 1:27:04Speaker 7: at everybody's feet. Nick Nick Saban's same kind of thing.
- 1:27:07Speaker 7: So I don't know, it's it's I mean, that's you know,
- 1:27:10Speaker 7: that's the fine point where coaching lives. You know what
- 1:27:12Speaker 7: buttons to push at what time, and you know each
- 1:27:15Speaker 7: coach is going to make certain choices that you know.
- 1:27:18Speaker 7: But I think you're right. It's it's a it's a
- 1:27:19Speaker 7: balancing act that you don't know you're gonna lose somebody.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but if you need to be coddled, then can
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: you really make it?
- 1:27:25Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:27:25Speaker 7: And it's the NFL. So like that's you have to
- 1:27:29Speaker 7: understand that your job is on the line, whether you're
- 1:27:31Speaker 7: Matthew Judon, whether you're Matthews, Like every day you're out there,
- 1:27:35Speaker 7: you have to perform. That is what this job is.
- 1:27:37Speaker 7: So that is the baseline of this.
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: David and Bethlehem. I don't want a cheerful, glad handing
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: guy who's well regarded by his teammates. He's talking about Mac.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: I want a guy with dead eye confidence. Forget the
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: xanax approach to competition give me urgency, not happiness.
- 1:27:51Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't know about all that. I don't know
- 1:27:55Speaker 8: if he's really this Like.
- 1:27:56Speaker 5: I'm going to come to his defense on that one too.
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: I don't think he's a laid back. No, I think
- 1:28:02Speaker 5: he's fiery.
- 1:28:03Speaker 8: Yeah, And they literally his nickname in Alabama was McEnroe.
- 1:28:06Speaker 8: So I don't really think that that's I don't see
- 1:28:09Speaker 8: like a happy, go lucky kid. That's just like, yeah,
- 1:28:12Speaker 8: we were just practicing.
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: Like, I think he definitely is competitive, but I think
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: he does well. We haven't seen it. He lacks that edge,
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: that like that ice in his veins. We have not
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: seen that. No, we have not seen that.
- 1:28:25Speaker 6: Like as far as like coming back from the adversity
- 1:28:29Speaker 6: and just having that fire under him, we haven't seen that.
- 1:28:31Speaker 8: But my but what I'm starting to wonder is is
- 1:28:34Speaker 8: it just because he is not physically capable of doing that.
- 1:28:38Speaker 8: I don't think that it's mentality. I don't think that
- 1:28:41Speaker 8: it's mentality with him, because we see it just behind
- 1:28:45Speaker 8: the scenes. We see work ethic, we see all we
- 1:28:47Speaker 8: see fire, we see all that. So I think it's ability.
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: We like these type of games. Who was a quarterback
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: that you would say had average or to limited physical skills,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: but had that fire, and that fire took them over
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: the edge.
- 1:29:05Speaker 7: I mean it's I mean, everybody's kind of a different
- 1:29:07Speaker 7: shade of this. I mean, I don't know. Russell Wilson
- 1:29:08Speaker 7: isn't exactly you know, the most. I mean, he's got
- 1:29:11Speaker 7: a great default.
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: You're looking for, you're looking for.
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: A guy who you know, it's not Aaron Rodgers in
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: terms of ability, but his attitude is fire. His competitiveness
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: made him a great quarter.
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: I mean you could argue that for Brady.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: Yeah, but as we've said, like he had a better
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: than average arm and.
- 1:29:30Speaker 11: No, but like.
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: I'm not talking about like when you say, I know
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: you're gonna laugh at when you say Aaron Rodgers, Like
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: Aaron Rodgers might be as physically gifted as any guy
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: like John Elway. Might be very few that have more so,
- 1:29:45Speaker 5: but I'm gonna in comparison, Ian Marino was a fiery guy,
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: but he had but he had an amazing skills, incredible skills.
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: But I know you're gonna laugh at me. But Doug
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: Flutie was a guy who shouldn't have even done what
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: he now. Listen, he shouldn't have even done what he
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: did and he overcame. I think just you know, limited
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: physical abilities was amazing competitiveness, amazing competitiveness.
- 1:30:15Speaker 8: You know, I don't think, you know, I don't know
- 1:30:18Speaker 8: if there's a great example, because I think that you
- 1:30:21Speaker 8: do have to have some sort of baseline ability like
- 1:30:24Speaker 8: it at this level, because there's guys like Tim Tebow
- 1:30:28Speaker 8: in college can light up college because of that, because
- 1:30:32Speaker 8: of just sheer want to and competitiveness. But then he
- 1:30:36Speaker 8: got to the NFL and he and he had you know,
- 1:30:38Speaker 8: eight games, and then was terrible.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: Yeah, so I think I think, you know, one of
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: those things about this exercise here is it's rare, if
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: at all, like that a guy without the physical skills
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: could become a great quarterback in the NFL.
- 1:30:55Speaker 6: It's hard unless you have the five star line and
- 1:31:00Speaker 6: the five star weapons like every but who's that guy?
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Tell me the guy?
- 1:31:05Speaker 8: You know, I don't have them.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: I don't know, don't I mean try Aikman that good?
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, number one overall pick I know, but you know,
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: I think your fluty one is is accurate, like five nothing,
- 1:31:19Speaker 5: one hundred and nothing. But he just willed himself into
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: being as good a player as it could be. Yeah,
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: now I think he's stunk, but that's the.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: But he won games in the NFL and because of him,
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: he made plays I know, and he and he should
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: have played in that game in Buffalo. I think you're
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: right about against Tennessee. They should have put a mample.
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: Then that the miracle wouldn't have happened. If that had happened,
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: they wouldn't have had to happen, but they wouldn't have
- 1:31:41Speaker 5: had the lead with with ten seconds left kicking off.
- 1:31:45Speaker 8: So the one guy and that's currently playing that it
- 1:31:48Speaker 8: hasn't won anything, So take this the But like I
- 1:31:50Speaker 8: think Kirk Cousins has that that you like, that sort
- 1:31:54Speaker 8: of fire. Yeah, And I don't think Kirk Cousins is
- 1:31:56Speaker 8: super talented.
- 1:31:57Speaker 7: He doesn't even practice on Tuesdays.
- 1:31:59Speaker 8: There you go, he doesn't even practice on Tuesdays. But
- 1:32:02Speaker 8: he's carved out a pretty solid NFL career all things considered.
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: And you say because of his competitiveness in his fire,
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: he definitely has swag too.
- 1:32:11Speaker 8: Yeah, I think it's more that than like he has
- 1:32:14Speaker 8: some big arm, you know, or some big physical ability. Okay,
- 1:32:18Speaker 8: but he hasn't won anything, so it's not really that's one.
- 1:32:21Speaker 8: It's not really a great it's not a perfect example,
- 1:32:23Speaker 8: because I wish I could give you one of somebody
- 1:32:25Speaker 8: that's actually won something.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: It's hard to just like like Phil Simms, Jaked Alone,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: Chad Alone.
- 1:32:32Speaker 8: Oh that's a good one.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: Yeah, from the Panther, good one.
- 1:32:34Speaker 8: Yeah, Jake Delone, or like even like Tony Romo. That
- 1:32:37Speaker 8: makes me think of that era as Tony Romo.
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's hard in this league to not have
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: exceptional skills and make it as a quarterback.
- 1:32:47Speaker 7: What would it taken a step father? Because we were
- 1:32:49Speaker 7: told that, you know, Max's skill is his mind. Is
- 1:32:52Speaker 7: there a quarterback that you can think of that wins
- 1:32:55Speaker 7: with his mind?
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: Really? Like you Joe Montana. I mean, you know, you
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: know Joe cool, but he was really damn accurate, you know.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: And and but I think his his superpower was his brain.
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: I would have to say, in his coolness, pressure brain.
- 1:33:12Speaker 7: Kind of coupled with it.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Yeah too. But he is the one that had to
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: make the plays, you know.
- 1:33:17Speaker 7: And and you you mentioned Joe cool that you know,
- 1:33:19Speaker 7: that's the thing that we're kind of waiting for with
- 1:33:21Speaker 7: Mac is to see him under pressure, to see him
- 1:33:23Speaker 7: be Matt cool and you know, be able to execute
- 1:33:25Speaker 7: in those games and pull off a you know, come
- 1:33:27Speaker 7: from behind victory.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: But you know, like I mentioned Phil Simms, I never
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: thought he was that great a quarterback. But he had
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: a great defense and everything around him was great.
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: You know, that's when I think Mac thrives.
- 1:33:39Speaker 6: I think with a great album, great defense, and everything
- 1:33:42Speaker 6: around him was great. He had great coaches too, So like.
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: It's hard, Yeah, it's hard to not have those skills
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: in the NFL as a quarterback. Ron and Conway New Hampshire.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: I'm currently listening to your show while I'm at work
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: in my office. I hear the talk about the I
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: agree with everything you're saying about Mac being indecisive. If
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: any of you have seen the NFL documentary called The
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: Brady Sixth, there's a great comp to Mac's current situation.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: The Qban question was Giovanni Carmazi for the Niners. He
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: was all world in college and great in camp and
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: had a good defense and Mariucci as a coach. To me,
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: that's not a plus. As soon as he started to
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: get hit in real games and made mistakes constantly, he
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: lost his confidence and never recovered and after two years
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: was out of the league entirely. I'm a Mac fan,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: but he's not the answer. I might be wrong, but
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: this is a similar feeling. I get love your show,
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: and I listened to every podcast you all do.
- 1:34:39Speaker 8: Thanks.
- 1:34:40Speaker 5: Like Giovanni Carmazi played at Hofstra, he was like a
- 1:34:45Speaker 5: sixth round pick. He was an overachiever to get where
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: he got, and he wasn't good enough to play in
- 1:34:50Speaker 5: the NFL. Now maybe he didn't have the mental capacity either,
- 1:34:54Speaker 5: but I just think that's disrespectful to Mac. Yeah, Florida,
- 1:34:58Speaker 5: it's like the fifteenth overall Alabama. You know, I don't
- 1:35:04Speaker 5: think that's apples to apples that comparison.
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: Jerry from Virginia some thoughts on Mac and Zappie. I
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: grew up in Vermont. I remember when we had a
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: Heisman Trophy winner as a rookie quarterback, Jim Plunkett. I
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: watched that he was pummeled to death as a Patriot.
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: He's a perfect example of how a bad team can
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: destroy a rookie quarterback. Plunkett had no confidence when he
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: left the team, but put a great front line up
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: for him, and he recovers and wins Super Bowls. Now,
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: let's talk Matt rookie preseason, he had nothing to lose
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: take risks as you are the expected backup, it makes
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: sense to go for Broke as he had nothing to lose. Results,
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: he beats out Cam and has a really good rookie year,
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: taking his team to the playoffs four to year two.
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: He enters preseason with full confidence and then everything goes
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: to hell. By the end of the year, he's shell shocked,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: second guessing himself and his coach, and he has lost
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: Belichick's trust. Now he's aware that his job is at risk,
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: particularly with the media constantly focusing on him in a
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: negative light. So Mac has a confidence issue and he
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: plays it safe in the field so far. Meanwhile, Zappi
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: has nothing to lose as the de facto backup. He
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: can sling the ball and take risks and there's no
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: chance McSorley will beat him. The only saving grace for
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: Mac is whether he can get over last year and
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: remember what the year before felt like. If so, maybe
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: he will become more of a risk taker. Otherwise, this
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: team may have ruined him during this last year's fiasco.
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: That's kind of what Evan was saying, like it might
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: have broke him last year, you know, but even that
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: first year, like he didn't take a lot of risks.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: He was not a gun slinger.
- 1:36:44Speaker 8: Well it's not of a I don't want him to
- 1:36:45Speaker 8: be a gunslinger either, I just you gotta he has
- 1:36:49Speaker 8: to have the ability to fit some tight window throws,
- 1:36:52Speaker 8: like not everything can just be open all the time,
- 1:36:56Speaker 8: or schemed open, or a receiver gets open like the
- 1:36:59Speaker 8: core has to every once in a while. I if
- 1:37:03Speaker 8: you go watch across the league every single Sunday, it's
- 1:37:05Speaker 8: not like every single throw that guys are completing are
- 1:37:08Speaker 8: to wide open guys.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: If he only had the confidence of Gardner Minshew, that's
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: one thing he doesn't lack, I do.
- 1:37:16Speaker 7: I think there's a lot of truth to it, though,
- 1:37:18Speaker 7: just in terms of not seeing the game the right
- 1:37:21Speaker 7: way anymore, and you know, having to rebuild going through
- 1:37:24Speaker 7: your progressions and trusting what you're seeing and trusting the receivers.
- 1:37:27Speaker 7: And so maybe that's you know, what we're seeing is
- 1:37:30Speaker 7: is mac These are the kind of early growing pains
- 1:37:32Speaker 7: of him going against the defense in this new offense,
- 1:37:34Speaker 7: trying to get everything down, trying to have confidence in
- 1:37:36Speaker 7: it all. And that's why I mean, I think we
- 1:37:38Speaker 7: all are you know, qualifying a little bit of just
- 1:37:40Speaker 7: you know, we are just less than a week into camp,
- 1:37:43Speaker 7: and you know he does deserve a little bit of time,
- 1:37:45Speaker 7: but certainly times running out we got in the next
- 1:37:48Speaker 7: three weeks. This is when it's gonna happen, the joint practices,
- 1:37:50Speaker 7: the preseason games, and you know, if it continues to
- 1:37:52Speaker 7: look like this, then I think we're all.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: And remember what that schedule looks like beginning of the season.
- 1:37:58Speaker 7: I mean, right out of the gate, you get the
- 1:38:00Speaker 7: FC champs, who are you know, everything that people kind
- 1:38:03Speaker 7: of make fun of this team for not being a
- 1:38:04Speaker 7: modern offense team that you know right now is the
- 1:38:07Speaker 7: darlings of the draft and oh wow, how they're working
- 1:38:09Speaker 7: their boards up and down and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:38:11Speaker 7: And then you know Miami, which is just to me,
- 1:38:14Speaker 7: that's that's the team that you're kind of battling with.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: If you run four games, are are tough?
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll say, I'm glad they're catching a break with Ramsey.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's true. I see how much.
- 1:38:26Speaker 8: But I think that you know, Fred, I know Paul
- 1:38:29Speaker 8: was teasing you about your point of just throw it
- 1:38:31Speaker 8: anyways earlier, but I kind of with you on that
- 1:38:35Speaker 8: because for the example, the one that I threw my
- 1:38:38Speaker 8: pen and I didn't I didn't hit anybody with it.
- 1:38:41Speaker 8: Uh wait, Tomorrio Douglas was open. And on the one hand,
- 1:38:45Speaker 8: you could say, well, maybe Matt didn't trust him to
- 1:38:47Speaker 8: read it correctly and he wasn't going to be there,
- 1:38:49Speaker 8: but the coaches know where he's supposed to be. So
- 1:38:52Speaker 8: if he throws the ball at to Mario Douglas's outside
- 1:38:55Speaker 8: hip and to Mario Douglas breaks inside and Jack Jones
- 1:38:58Speaker 8: steps in front of it for a pick, and Bill
- 1:39:00Speaker 8: O'Brien's gonna say, Tomorrio Douglas, what are you doing?
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:39:04Speaker 8: So I would much rather see him make that mistake
- 1:39:08Speaker 8: in practice than to just say, nope, check it down
- 1:39:12Speaker 8: to remonderate in the flat and.
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: That, like you said, it's not a mistake, right, it
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: looks like a mistake.
- 1:39:17Speaker 8: And this is and this is not to go on
- 1:39:19Speaker 8: a whole rant about training camp stats, but this is
- 1:39:21Speaker 8: where the training camp stats thing really bugs me. Is
- 1:39:24Speaker 8: because everybody's going to put that down as a good
- 1:39:28Speaker 8: play for its completion for the quarterback, right, good play
- 1:39:31Speaker 8: by the quarterback because he checked it down and it
- 1:39:33Speaker 8: was a pass that was completed, but there was a
- 1:39:35Speaker 8: bigger play out that he left out on the field.
- 1:39:38Speaker 8: And that's the context that you need to see and
- 1:39:41Speaker 8: look at and say, well, was that really a good
- 1:39:44Speaker 8: play by the quarterback or was that actually did on
- 1:39:48Speaker 8: the table?
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:39:49Speaker 8: And he and I think too often that we are
- 1:39:51Speaker 8: seeing him leave money on the table.
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: Three second sessions being fres Though fred the idea that
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: last year broke and traumatized Mac could be right. It
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: also it could also, or alternatively be that he just
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: didn't have what it takes, as I believe was likely
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: signaled toward the end of his rookie season and forward
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: from there. The answer is probably all of the above,
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: but it doesn't excel this season. But if he doesn't
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: excel this season, let's not assume it's only a David
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: Carr thing. He was famously pummeled with the Texans.
- 1:40:26Speaker 8: I don't necessarily think that we should excuse it all
- 1:40:31Speaker 8: away as like a David Carr thing. But I do
- 1:40:33Speaker 8: think Mack was on the trajectory of his rookie season
- 1:40:36Speaker 8: of being the other car like or you know, I
- 1:40:41Speaker 8: mentioned Kirk Cousins earlier, like, I think he was on
- 1:40:44Speaker 8: that trajector. I don't think he was ever gonna personally.
- 1:40:46Speaker 8: I never thought that he was going to be truly special.
- 1:40:48Speaker 8: I never thought he was going to be a guy
- 1:40:50Speaker 8: that we thought of as an MVP candidate or a
- 1:40:53Speaker 8: top five quarterback in the league. Maybe like Matt Ryan
- 1:40:56Speaker 8: had that one one MVP season, right like, maybe that
- 1:40:59Speaker 8: it all would come together in year ten, and he
- 1:41:01Speaker 8: would have a Julio Jones to throw to in a
- 1:41:04Speaker 8: great and it would all come together for statistically to
- 1:41:07Speaker 8: have that kind of year. But I don't I truly
- 1:41:10Speaker 8: think that he was on a good enough trajectory to
- 1:41:13Speaker 8: have a long career. And I still think that that's possible.
- 1:41:17Speaker 8: I'm not ruling that out, but I I don't think
- 1:41:19Speaker 8: you can there's a middle ground between a David Carr
- 1:41:23Speaker 8: situation and and you know, him being special.
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: I guess a sticket hutline eight five five past five hundred,
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: Tim is on the road, Watch out for cars, Tim, Yeah, okay,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: how's the traffic.
- 1:41:42Speaker 19: Not bad?
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: Okay? What do you got? Yeah?
- 1:41:47Speaker 12: What big thought? I had trew breeze to meet with
- 1:41:52Speaker 12: somebody arm.
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: But I think that's a good that's a good example
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: of a guy who unbelievable anticipation, knowledge of the game,
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: and overcame you know, uh if the arm.
- 1:42:06Speaker 5: Yeah, but you asked about fiery personality. Yeah, I don't
- 1:42:09Speaker 5: think Drew Brees is firing.
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: Oh you haven't seen him break down the team before
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: the game. They do the song that's pretty fire.
- 1:42:15Speaker 5: I think he's all that.
- 1:42:16Speaker 8: If we want to go for Drew Brees, then we
- 1:42:18Speaker 8: better go build a dome.
- 1:42:21Speaker 5: Well, I'm not even I'm not even being disrespectful to
- 1:42:24Speaker 5: Drew Brees like I am, although I have used that
- 1:42:27Speaker 5: line many times in the past. But I think he's
- 1:42:31Speaker 5: a guy who got the most out of his talent,
- 1:42:32Speaker 5: for sure. I don't think because of a fiery personality. Okay, fair,
- 1:42:36Speaker 5: but I think one is a good one. Yeah, even
- 1:42:39Speaker 5: though I don't think.
- 1:42:41Speaker 8: I agree that Drew Brees got the most out of
- 1:42:43Speaker 8: his talent, I just don't know if I think Drew
- 1:42:46Speaker 8: Brees is a dome quarterback that that was a subject
- 1:42:49Speaker 8: of a very good era for somebody like Drew Brees.
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:42:53Speaker 8: If Drew Brees played his entire career in Foxborough, yeah,
- 1:42:57Speaker 8: I'm not sure what it looked the same.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: But you know, talk about throwing guys open here's a
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: guy that would have to throw over his line. You know,
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: the trajectory on Drew Brees's ball was so much different
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: than a six or four quarterback, Yet it would drop
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: right where it had to be because he trusted his
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: receiver to be where he was supposed to be.
- 1:43:16Speaker 7: Yeah, you know remember on the Blue Doors off the
- 1:43:18Speaker 7: Patriots and O nine. That was that was a butt kicking.
- 1:43:21Speaker 7: If I ever saw on that was the best I
- 1:43:22Speaker 7: think I've seen Drew Brees.
- 1:43:26Speaker 5: Five touchdowns that day. I would just say, Marcus Colston, Yeah,
- 1:43:30Speaker 5: I'm you know this fread because we've talked about this before.
- 1:43:33Speaker 5: I'm closer to Evan on Drew Brees. Yeah, that doesn't
- 1:43:36Speaker 5: mean I don't think he's a great quarterback. I do
- 1:43:37Speaker 5: think he was a great quarterback. I don't put him
- 1:43:40Speaker 5: in the echelon of obviously Brady, but Peyton Manning, John Elway,
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: well even now like Aaron Rodgers. I think these guys
- 1:43:48Speaker 5: were better players than he was and did it in different,
- 1:43:50Speaker 5: you know, different conditions. Manning was a Dome quarterback too,
- 1:43:54Speaker 5: but I saw him play well outside of the Dome.
- 1:43:56Speaker 5: I'm telling you, every time I saw Drew Brees playing
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: reasonably bad weather. He didn't pay well. Yeah, I thought
- 1:44:01Speaker 5: they had some playoff games against inferior teams on the
- 1:44:04Speaker 5: road like Chicago, and they didn't look anything anything similar.
- 1:44:09Speaker 5: So I mean, I think he's great. I just don't
- 1:44:11Speaker 5: think he's one of the five best all time. Like
- 1:44:12Speaker 5: when he retired he had the record, right, Yeah, that
- 1:44:15Speaker 5: Brady Broke. I don't look at him that way.
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: Would you say? Philip Rivers was a guy who's a
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: fire Competitiveness brought him to the next level.
- 1:44:23Speaker 5: That's a fiery guy that you could use that for.
- 1:44:25Speaker 7: Yeah, that and his kids, you know.
- 1:44:28Speaker 8: But Philip Rivers was also a specimen like talented guy
- 1:44:31Speaker 8: in terms of his he was like six ' five,
- 1:44:34Speaker 8: like he had a weird delivery. But yeah, I don't know.
- 1:44:37Speaker 8: I feel like he had more physical ability than Mac.
- 1:44:40Speaker 5: That fourth overall pick.
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, let's see.
- 1:44:45Speaker 11: Uh.
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: David writes in Rochester, New York. Julian is a this
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: is a what's he called this or that game? Julian
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: Edelman or Wes Welker. That's a tough one.
- 1:44:56Speaker 5: It's a ridiculously tough one. I'd take Welker, but I
- 1:44:59Speaker 5: have no problem taking Edelman.
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: Is it the playoffs.
- 1:45:02Speaker 5: I love them both.
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: I'll take Edelman, he's proving it. Yeah, he's proven.
- 1:45:06Speaker 5: I take Welker there too. But you can't go wrong.
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: Win Super Bowl fifty two or win super Bowl forty six,
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: forty six, eight to three.
- 1:45:18Speaker 7: I might well right after it right now.
- 1:45:21Speaker 5: Eagles, the Eagles, the Eagles life.
- 1:45:24Speaker 8: I sap the Eagles for so many of them, you
- 1:45:26Speaker 8: just lose track.
- 1:45:27Speaker 7: I take the Eagles one, because then they would have
- 1:45:29Speaker 7: four in a row, right, So I think that, I
- 1:45:31Speaker 7: mean as much as forty six would be three in
- 1:45:34Speaker 7: a row, three in row.
- 1:45:34Speaker 8: When they got forty nine sixteen seventeen, they would.
- 1:45:36Speaker 7: Have gone fifty fifty one fifty.
- 1:45:38Speaker 5: Yeah, so four out of five. But I mean, I
- 1:45:40Speaker 5: guess if you look at it that way, that's the answer.
- 1:45:42Speaker 5: I would have rather beaten the Giants to get revenge
- 1:45:44Speaker 5: for the previous I can't.
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: Believe Nikhil Harry or Ken Drow Tompkins, well, KEMBERL.
- 1:45:51Speaker 5: Compins did Ken Brill Camber Tompkins had a far better career.
- 1:45:54Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: If I just said that line.
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: Mac Jones or Scott Zolac, I.
- 1:46:00Speaker 8: Didn't see, so I can't speak.
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: I got it, and I'm not even talking about I'd
- 1:46:04Speaker 5: to recuse myself.
- 1:46:05Speaker 7: I'd have to say Zo just because I remember being
- 1:46:07Speaker 7: excited about Zoe, like it was.
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: Well, he had that one stretch of like three or
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: four games he beat the forty nine ers. He was fun.
- 1:46:14Speaker 7: Pete Carroll is fiery. Here there's an example.
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: Know they you know, the the eleven the eleven thirty
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: shows on Sunday night used to be the big sports show,
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: Like the news would come on and then Sunday night
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: they'd have like a half hour talk show and it
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: would wrap up the weekend of sports, and you know,
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: it would be talking heads and everything, and it was
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: must see TV for sports fans. And his father was
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: going on those shows and all the talk was you
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: know Scott Zolac. You know, he'd shoot the guns after
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: he made a play and it was a brief but
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: memorable little run for him.
- 1:46:46Speaker 7: That that's happened a lot with backup quarterbacks, like I
- 1:46:49Speaker 7: can't think of example a lot of other cities, but
- 1:46:51Speaker 7: just like Zappy even last year, Like there's something about
- 1:46:54Speaker 7: an NFL team when suddenly the backup quarterback gets thrust
- 1:46:57Speaker 7: in that people kind of rally around them and it's
- 1:47:00Speaker 7: actually if they've like Zolac have like a personality and
- 1:47:03Speaker 7: you know there was just like I don't know why
- 1:47:05Speaker 7: that particular portion of Patriots history sticks out for me
- 1:47:07Speaker 7: as a fan, but like I remember being like, yeah,
- 1:47:09Speaker 7: I mean Blitze was hurt, but like you know, Gola though,
- 1:47:12Speaker 7: you like like there was something about it that you like,
- 1:47:14Speaker 7: But I don't know that's cool.
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: Patriots Darrell Reeves or Patriots Stefan Gilmore, Gilmore Gilmore.
- 1:47:22Speaker 7: I think Gilmore Gilmore is at the height of his path.
- 1:47:24Speaker 7: He kind of like came into his peak while he
- 1:47:26Speaker 7: was here, whereas Reeves was kind of on the backslide.
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: Malcolm Butler or J. C. Jackson. I take Jackson.
- 1:47:34Speaker 5: I take Butler really yeah, really yeah. I think it's
- 1:47:39Speaker 5: weird because you can make your voice go high.
- 1:47:41Speaker 8: I feel very there are two different types of so
- 1:47:44Speaker 8: different players like Malcolm Butler, good Man Cover who couldn't
- 1:47:47Speaker 8: catch it the ball.
- 1:47:49Speaker 5: Jackson had a lot of picks, Like it's kind of
- 1:47:52Speaker 5: like that stupid Buddy Ryan line that he used to
- 1:47:54Speaker 5: get made fun of. Like Chris Catter, all he does
- 1:47:56Speaker 5: is catch touchdowns like that was like a bad thing.
- 1:47:58Speaker 5: But all he does is catch like interceptions from his
- 1:48:01Speaker 5: own Like I think that jac Jackson got beat or
- 1:48:03Speaker 5: someone threw the ball to him and he caught it
- 1:48:04Speaker 5: for a pick, and everybody's like nine picks. Like I
- 1:48:07Speaker 5: think he was good. I think jac Jackson was good.
- 1:48:10Speaker 5: I don't think he was ever as good.
- 1:48:11Speaker 8: As I'd be very you know. I think jac Jackson
- 1:48:15Speaker 8: could be back here in like two years. But I
- 1:48:19Speaker 8: Malcolm Butler is nickname amongst his teammates with straps because
- 1:48:21Speaker 8: he just locked people down in man coverage. So I
- 1:48:24Speaker 8: would take straps.
- 1:48:25Speaker 5: Yeh over, how come you don't make your voice go
- 1:48:27Speaker 5: high for him?
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: Really? Thank you?
- 1:48:30Speaker 7: That's all I was looking for.
- 1:48:31Speaker 5: He had little little balance.
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: Go seven and ten, Go seven and ten and Mac
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: is a top ten quarterback. Or go twelve and five,
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: but Ma's not proven as a franchise quarterback. If what
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: happens after, how do we win the super Bowl?
- 1:48:48Speaker 5: How do you go twelve? And you can't win twelve
- 1:48:50Speaker 5: games without him proving something? You can't fall into twelve wins?
- 1:48:55Speaker 7: Can just comes here and it's like completely.
- 1:48:59Speaker 5: Just take with that schedule.
- 1:49:01Speaker 6: I mean, he's got to do something right If you're
- 1:49:02Speaker 6: twelve and five, ye if you if you went twelve
- 1:49:04Speaker 6: and five and he's not your proven franchise quarterback.
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: That means that you got really lucky.
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: Right, these receivers are a little better than we thought
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: they were.
- 1:49:13Speaker 6: That would have to be like two was out, you know,
- 1:49:17Speaker 6: like Josh is out like.
- 1:49:18Speaker 8: One game that was limping around at practice today. Yes,
- 1:49:21Speaker 8: oh gosh, my guy, big big impact.
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: Should come sleek way Dan in New Hampshire. Have you
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: seen anything from Taekwan himself or scheme wise that's preventing
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: him from contributing so far in camp?
- 1:49:37Speaker 6: No.
- 1:49:37Speaker 7: I mean he had the two the two catches the
- 1:49:39Speaker 7: other day, which I mean I think one of them
- 1:49:40Speaker 7: I remembered distinkly that he had, you know, nice kind
- 1:49:42Speaker 7: of moving the end zone to get open. But other
- 1:49:45Speaker 7: than those two places, he was completely invisible to me today.
- 1:49:47Speaker 7: I didn't I didn't see him once.
- 1:49:48Speaker 8: Yeah, it seems like some I was. I was wondering
- 1:49:53Speaker 8: if maybe he would be involved in some of the
- 1:49:55Speaker 8: like the the motions that they were doing, just because
- 1:49:59Speaker 8: you get that speed moving in full speed and see
- 1:50:02Speaker 8: you can get him out on the edge. But most
- 1:50:04Speaker 8: of that stuff has been juju with the top guys.
- 1:50:07Speaker 8: And then Tomario Douglas with the twos, so it hasn't
- 1:50:10Speaker 8: really been Taekwon. I just think that he has issues
- 1:50:14Speaker 8: playing through contact. And I don't mean like he's gonna
- 1:50:17Speaker 8: get hurt going over the middle. It just getting off
- 1:50:20Speaker 8: of coverage down the field, finishing through contact. I think
- 1:50:24Speaker 8: those are things that he's still not quite there yet.
- 1:50:27Speaker 7: I think that's a good observation as I feel like
- 1:50:29Speaker 7: sometimes the place just don't look right with him, and
- 1:50:31Speaker 7: because he gets hung up, like the timing gets thrown off,
- 1:50:34Speaker 7: because he can't really get away from guys, he's gonna
- 1:50:37Speaker 7: have to run away and not get touched.
- 1:50:39Speaker 8: I think, right, you know, he had a good play
- 1:50:41Speaker 8: on that fade in the back of the end zone,
- 1:50:44Speaker 8: which the other one that he had was a good
- 1:50:46Speaker 8: I guess a good scramble drill, but that's the one.
- 1:50:49Speaker 8: It might have been a sack honestly in the game anyways.
- 1:50:52Speaker 8: But the fade, I think it was against Isaiah Bolden.
- 1:50:55Speaker 8: He had a really good release at the line of scrimmage,
- 1:50:58Speaker 8: but it was against Isaiah bolt Like, if he can
- 1:50:59Speaker 8: do thatgainst Jonathan Jones and Christian Gonzalez, then that's how
- 1:51:03Speaker 8: he won't get contacted down the field because he's going
- 1:51:05Speaker 8: to beat him at the line of scrimmage. His whole
- 1:51:07Speaker 8: game is the release. Like if he can get off
- 1:51:09Speaker 8: the line of scrimmage and he can shake a guy
- 1:51:11Speaker 8: where he gets him on his back and then he
- 1:51:12Speaker 8: can just run away from you, and that's how he's
- 1:51:14Speaker 8: going to get open. If you're right in his hip pocket,
- 1:51:17Speaker 8: then he's not going to get open.
- 1:51:19Speaker 5: Since any issues still with Thoornton and like route running,
- 1:51:23Speaker 5: or maybe not even the way he runs the route,
- 1:51:25Speaker 5: but like running the correct route and knowing his assignments.
- 1:51:29Speaker 8: Yes, a couple of times, the one in particular that
- 1:51:32Speaker 8: mac Jones went right over to him after the play
- 1:51:34Speaker 8: and today no early.
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: Has a second practice.
- 1:51:38Speaker 5: I thought I had a when hosts are not listening.
- 1:51:40Speaker 7: Now that was first or second day. I think we
- 1:51:42Speaker 7: might even have been on the radio. But that was
- 1:51:44Speaker 7: one where I mean I haven't called that one out right, No,
- 1:51:46Speaker 7: right over to him.
- 1:51:47Speaker 5: I've seen some issues with him at times with that.
- 1:51:49Speaker 5: And I remember last year he was one of two
- 1:51:52Speaker 5: guys in a similar area a lot, and you know
- 1:51:55Speaker 5: it was like him and Jonah Smith were in the
- 1:51:57Speaker 5: same spot, him and Bourne were in the same spot,
- 1:51:59Speaker 5: Him and Abe ma, he was the common phenomena.
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: You are the weekly troubling. Ron says that actually Camazie
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: was a third round pick sixty fifth overall.
- 1:52:11Speaker 5: Correction still went to Hostra and not Alabama and was
- 1:52:14Speaker 5: not the fifteenth overall pick, but corrected.
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: Nick says, Bill says cam is our quarterback. But Bill
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: can't go out and say that about his first round quarterback.
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: If there was ever a time to have his back,
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: it's now.
- 1:52:25Speaker 5: I agree.
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: I think Tamara's spot on about Max shutting down. He's
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: not Brady. We may not like it, but he's their
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: best shot at the playoffs. If it's Zappi, it's six wins.
- 1:52:37Speaker 8: I just it's such a slippery slope. And this isn't
- 1:52:39Speaker 8: even about Mackett because I see it. You know you
- 1:52:42Speaker 8: I'll know that I'm a huge Celtics fan and we
- 1:52:44Speaker 8: we go back and forth with the Jays all the
- 1:52:46Speaker 8: time on this. It's like do you stroke the ego
- 1:52:48Speaker 8: or do you play or do you give him tough love?
- 1:52:51Speaker 8: Because when you stroke the ego and then all of
- 1:52:53Speaker 8: a sudden they think that they're Kobe before they're Kobe,
- 1:52:55Speaker 8: and it's like, you know, what are we gonna do?
- 1:52:58Speaker 8: I think it's the same thing with Macatt. It's just
- 1:53:00Speaker 8: such a difficult tightrope to walk where you want to
- 1:53:03Speaker 8: give him confidence, but he also has to prove it
- 1:53:05Speaker 8: in the league still, and it's just what what what's
- 1:53:08Speaker 8: the line there?
- 1:53:09Speaker 6: I would I would agree with you if he wasn't
- 1:53:12Speaker 6: done dirty last year. So I think that if last
- 1:53:15Speaker 6: year didn't happen and there was already a trust factor there,
- 1:53:19Speaker 6: then like you wouldn't have to go out there and
- 1:53:21Speaker 6: like prove that you trust him and he's your guy.
- 1:53:23Speaker 6: But because you let him be a part of your
- 1:53:24Speaker 6: experiment and have taken no accountability for your for your actions,
- 1:53:28Speaker 6: and then you want to come out here and not
- 1:53:30Speaker 6: claim what.
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: If you're what if you believe he was also part
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: of the problem because he didn't give it even if
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: you knew it wasn't good, but he just didn't have
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: a good attitude to make it give it a chance
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: to work.
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: It's it's all very tough.
- 1:53:43Speaker 6: I feel like he was dealt a bad hand and
- 1:53:45Speaker 6: also I feel like there's a trust issue going on,
- 1:53:47Speaker 6: and then it's like then you want to you're still
- 1:53:49Speaker 6: not actually claiming him.
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: What if he went out of the family for advice.
- 1:53:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it's all, it's all.
- 1:53:56Speaker 6: I know.
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: All right, we're gonna have to cut it off shore.
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: But I do want to say that the show is
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: brought to you by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism.
