Speaker 1: Let us pray. And the publican, standing far off, would
• 0:05
Speaker 1: not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven,
• 0:08
Speaker 1: but smote him on his breast, saying, God, be merciful
• 0:13
Speaker 1: to me, a sinner. Luke 18.13 God of heaven and earth,
• 0:20
Speaker 1: I want to take a moment and thank you for
• 0:23
Speaker 1: cleansing my life and for giving me a second chance
• 0:26
Speaker 1: to enjoy all that you have for me. like you
• 0:30
Speaker 1: did to those lepers in today's story. May my posture
• 0:36
Speaker 1: and my heart be like the one leper who came
• 0:39
Speaker 1: back to thank you. May my life serve as a
• 0:43
Speaker 1: continual thanksgiving to you for all that you've done for
• 0:47
Speaker 1: me and all that you're going to do for me
• 0:49
Speaker 1: in the future. I live with gratitude because it is
• 0:55
Speaker 1: only by your power, Jesus, that I have access to
• 0:59
Speaker 1: eternal life and life in abundance here on earth. For
• 1:05
Speaker 1: I will not live with the spirit of judgment on
• 1:07
Speaker 1: my life, like the Pharisees did to the tax collector. Instead,
• 1:12
Speaker 1: I will be a model of the life of Jesus
• 1:15
Speaker 1: who looked at the heart before any outward appearance. Pride
• 1:21
Speaker 1: will not be afforded the luxury to take up space
• 1:23
Speaker 1: in my mind and my life. because that space is
• 1:27
Speaker 1: already occupied by the love and humility of Christ. I
• 1:33
Speaker 1: stamp this as my truth. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thanks
• 1:41
Speaker 1: for making prayer a priority in your life. To hear

Speaker 2: Lepers, Judges, and Pride In our last story, we explored
• 2:07
Speaker 2: the story of the prodigal son. Jesus used his story
• 2:11
Speaker 2: to demonstrate the steadfast forgiveness of God. No matter how
• 2:15
Speaker 2: far gone someone may seem, the Lord is actively waiting
• 2:18
Speaker 2: to restore and forgive. Now we see Jesus healing lepers,
• 2:23
Speaker 2: ministering to his disciples, and rebuking the Pharisees. In all
• 2:27
Speaker 2: these interactions, Jesus shows that he is driven by compassion,
• 2:32
Speaker 2: Inspired by the Gospels.
• 2:36
Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
• 2:38
Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
• 2:42
Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
• 2:45
Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
• 2:48
Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
• 2:51
Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
• 2:53
Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
• 2:57
Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
• 2:59
Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and and how his living word,
• 3:03
Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
• 3:07
Speaker 3: to get a copy of the Jesus book, simply go
• 3:09
Speaker 3: to jackgraham.org slash Jesus. That's jackgraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
• 3:17
Speaker 3: you for your support. In our last episode, we heard
• 3:20
Speaker 3: about a loving, forgiving father who accepted his repentant son
• 3:24
Speaker 3: with open arms, which provides us a picture of God's
• 3:28
Speaker 3: own nature, and His desire to restore us into His
• 3:31
Speaker 3: family when we come to Him. Jesus was showing the
• 3:35
Speaker 3: Pharisees and all of us that God rejoices greatly when
• 3:39
Speaker 3: even one of His children comes back to Him, no
• 3:42
Speaker 3: matter where they've been or what they've done. It's never
• 3:45
Speaker 3: too late for a new beginning. Today, we'll hear as
• 3:49
Speaker 3: Jesus continues to show mercy, compassion, and healing to those
• 3:53
Speaker 3: around Him who have great physical and spiritual needs. His
• 3:57
Speaker 3: unconditional and limitless love for humanity is a stark contrast
• 4:02
Speaker 3: to the religiosity of his day. As we listen, Jesus
• 4:06
Speaker 3: also will teach a lesson about prayer and God's willingness
• 4:10
Speaker 3: to hear our cries for help and forgiveness when we
• 4:13
Speaker 3: come to him with a humble heart. So let's listen
• 4:16
Speaker 3: now to today's Gospel reading.
• 4:20
Speaker 2: Have mercy on us, Jesus heard from the distance. The
• 4:24
Speaker 2: faint moans were coming from the shadows below some rocks
• 4:27
Speaker 2: near Galilee. Jesus, our master, please have mercy on us,
• 4:32
Speaker 2: the voices cried out again. Jesus and his disciples stopped
• 4:36
Speaker 2: to inspect the source of the painful moans. Then creeping
• 4:39
Speaker 2: out of the shadows were ten lepers. Their faces were
• 4:43
Speaker 2: mangled from years of rotting. Their eyes were yellow and
• 4:46
Speaker 2: nearly lifeless. The disciples leaped back in fear, but Jesus
• 4:50
Speaker 2: stepped forward. The ten lepers all fell to their knees
• 4:54
Speaker 2: and begged Jesus to heal them. Jesus touched each and
• 4:58
Speaker 2: every one of them gently. He was moved with compassion.
• 5:02
Speaker 2: Go your way. Show yourselves to the priests, for you
• 5:06
Speaker 2: are healed. As the ten lepers arose, the dark sores
• 5:10
Speaker 2: on their bodies began to heal. Their limbs regained color
• 5:14
Speaker 2: and feeling. Even their voices were filled with more life
• 5:17
Speaker 2: than before. The lepers leapt with joy and skipped their
• 5:21
Speaker 2: way back into the city. Their laughs echoed as they
• 5:24
Speaker 2: held each other arm to arm. Jesus smiled, then turned
• 5:29
Speaker 2: back to continue walking with his disciples. After about a mile,
• 5:33
Speaker 2: Jesus heard a voice shouting from behind him. It was
• 5:36
Speaker 2: one of the healed lepers. He had used his newfound
• 5:39
Speaker 2: energy to run back to Jesus and fall at his feet.
• 5:42
Speaker 2: He thanked Jesus and praised him for the work he
• 5:45
Speaker 2: had done in his life. Thank you. the man said
• 5:48
Speaker 2: with tears. Jesus laughed from his belly and embraced the man.
• 5:53
Speaker 2: Then he looked around. There were no signs of the others.
• 5:57
Speaker 2: Were there not ten of you? Where are the other nine?
• 5:59
  Speaker 1: Jesus asked.
• 6:01
Speaker 2: Is there no one else who will thank God except
• 6:03
Speaker 2: this man? Jesus shrugged, saddened by the lack of gratitude.
• 6:08
Speaker 2: Later that evening, Jesus was beside the fire with his disciples.
• 6:11
Speaker 2: The cool breeze was a welcomed relief after a hot
• 6:14
Speaker 2: day of traveling. The men ate together and told stories.
• 6:19
Speaker 2: Sometimes they would speak of God's will. Other times they
• 6:22
Speaker 2: would make jokes and laugh. Eventually, the disciples were asking
• 6:26
Speaker 2: Jesus about prayer. They wanted to know if God always
• 6:29
Speaker 2: listened to them, if he always bent his ear to
• 6:32
Speaker 2: hear their cries. A few of them confessed that they
• 6:35
Speaker 2: would often lose heart when they prayed to God. They
• 6:38
Speaker 2: would pray for a few weeks, but eventually stop when
• 6:42
Speaker 2: things wouldn't change. Jesus propped himself up closer to the fire,
• 6:46
Speaker 2: looking deeply into the flickering flame. He pondered for a
• 6:50
Speaker 2: moment and then began to tell another parable. There was
• 6:53
Speaker 2: once a judge who did not fear God. He was
• 6:57
Speaker 2: a grumpy man and unhappy. In his city was a
• 7:00
Speaker 2: widow who had been wronged. Every day she went into
• 7:03
Speaker 2: his courtroom yelling, Give me justice! But every time the
• 7:07
Speaker 2: judge refused. The widow would come in every day asking
• 7:11
Speaker 2: for justice. She would ask so often that the judge
• 7:14
Speaker 2: eventually said to himself, I will do anything to get
• 7:17
Speaker 2: this woman to leave me alone. So he granted her justice.
• 7:22
Speaker 2: Jesus leaned over to his disciples and said, Even the
• 7:25
Speaker 2: unrighteous judge was worn down over time. Will not God,
• 7:29
Speaker 2: who loves you, bend his ear to bring you justice?
• 7:33
Speaker 2: Cry to him day and night. He will give justice
• 7:35
Speaker 2: to those who cry out for it. The next day
• 7:39
Speaker 2: Jesus and his disciples were walking in the city streets
• 7:42
Speaker 2: of Galilee. The city was busy and many tax collectors
• 7:45
Speaker 2: were set up on the cross streets to collect what
• 7:48
Speaker 2: was owed to Rome. Pharisees and other Jews scoffed and
• 7:51
Speaker 2: spited the men collecting taxes in the courtyard. They looked
• 7:55
Speaker 2: at them with complete disdain. They saw them as rats
• 7:58
Speaker 2: and betrayers of Israel because they worked for the Romans.
• 8:02
Speaker 2: Jesus watched from a distance as the Pharisees stuck their
• 8:05
Speaker 2: noses high in the air. Moved by the Spirit, Jesus
• 8:09
Speaker 2: rose up and elevated his voice.' Two men went to
• 8:13
Speaker 2: the temple to pray,' he yelled. Jesus had a voice
• 8:17
Speaker 2: that drew attention. Everyone stopped to listen. Two men entered
• 8:22
Speaker 2: the temple. One of them was a Pharisee, the other
• 8:25
Speaker 2: was a tax collector. The Pharisee prayed standing. He held
• 8:29
Speaker 2: his arms high in the air and yelled,' O God,
• 8:33
Speaker 2: I thank you that I am not like other men.'
• 8:36
Speaker 2: I thank you that I am not like these thieves, adulterers, liars,
• 8:40
Speaker 2: and tax collectors. I fast every week, I tithe all
• 8:44
Speaker 2: I earn, and I know your law inside and out.
• 8:49
Speaker 2: Jesus walked over to the desk of the tax collectors.
• 8:52
Speaker 2: He looked at them with compassion and gave a gentle smile.
• 8:55
Speaker 2: Still projecting his voice, he said, The other man, the
• 8:59
Speaker 2: tax collector, was on his knees and face. He could
• 9:02
Speaker 2: barely look to heaven. Knowing his heart was wicked, he
• 9:05
Speaker 2: beat his chest and whispered to God, Have mercy on me.
• 9:10
Speaker 2: I am a sinner. Jesus pointed to the Pharisees and
• 9:14
Speaker 2: gave them a long, glaring stare. Know this. The tax
• 9:18
Speaker 2: collector went home justified, not the Pharisee. He who exalts
• 9:23
Speaker 2: himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will
• 9:27
Speaker 2: be exalted. With those words, The Pharisees left to conspire
• 9:32
  Speaker 2: against him.
• 9:37
Speaker 3: In today's scripture, Jesus and the disciples are passing between
• 9:40
Speaker 3: Samaria and Galilee on their way to Jerusalem. And as
• 9:44
Speaker 3: they enter a village, they are met by ten lepers,
• 9:47
Speaker 3: men who stood at a distance to ask Jesus to
• 9:50
Speaker 3: heal them. These men, as all lepers in those days,
• 9:54
Speaker 3: were shunned and cut out of society, kept away so
• 9:58
Speaker 3: they could not infect others. It was a terrible existence,
• 10:02
Speaker 3: both physically and emotionally. So these ten came to ask
• 10:07
Speaker 3: for healing, for restoration, that their skin could be cleansed
• 10:10
Speaker 3: so that once again they could join their families and friends,
• 10:14
Speaker 3: that they could get their lives back. Their cries had
• 10:17
Speaker 3: surely fallen on deaf ears before. But Jesus was not
• 10:21
Speaker 3: like everyone else. He heard their pleas for mercy and
• 10:24
Speaker 3: turned to them, telling them to go and present themselves
• 10:27
Speaker 3: to the priest. And as they turned, just as Jesus
• 10:30
Speaker 3: told them to do, each man was cleansed, the scales
• 10:34
Speaker 3: of leprosy shedding to reveal a healthy skin. So they
• 10:39
Speaker 3: ran off, surely eager to reap the benefits of this miracle.
• 10:44
Speaker 3: But we're told that one man, when he saw what
• 10:47
Speaker 3: Jesus had done, turned back And he said, Jesus, thank
• 10:51
Speaker 3: you for healing me. Of all the 10 men, only
• 10:54
Speaker 3: one expressed gratitude for the blessing. And this didn't go
• 10:58
Speaker 3: unnoticed by the Lord because he asked the man, where
• 11:01
Speaker 3: are the others? Were there not 10 men healed? It
• 11:06
Speaker 3: was a rhetorical question intended to point out that only
• 11:09
Speaker 3: this Samaritan man, once again, the least likely suspect in
• 11:12
Speaker 3: the eyes of any self-respecting Jewish person at that time,
• 11:17
Speaker 3: but only this man had the right heart attitude towards God,
• 11:21
Speaker 3: one filled with gratitude. His praise and humility opened the
• 11:25
Speaker 3: door for an even greater healing. For in Luke 17
• 11:28
Speaker 3: and verse 19, this is what Jesus said to the man,
• 11:33
Speaker 3: rise and go your way. Your faith has made you whole.
• 11:37
Speaker 3: You see, while all 10 lepers received healing that day,
• 11:41
Speaker 3: physical healing, only this grateful man who returned to worship
• 11:46
Speaker 3: the Lord, experienced true spiritual restoration. We then heard as
• 11:51
Speaker 3: Jesus taught his disciples about prayer and how they are
• 11:55
Speaker 3: to be persistent in prayer, trusting God to hear them
• 11:58
Speaker 3: and answer and not to give up, not to lose heart.
• 12:03
Speaker 3: He told them of a judge, a very hard and
• 12:05
Speaker 3: difficult man, who didn't listen to the cries of those
• 12:08
Speaker 3: in need, nor did he fear God. And yet this judge,
• 12:12
Speaker 3: when pestered for justice by a widow, eventually gave in.
• 12:17
Speaker 3: Then he told them that if this unjust man who
• 12:20
Speaker 3: was not righteous would help this widow, how much more
• 12:23
Speaker 3: would God help them? The point was not that God
• 12:26
Speaker 3: only hears our prayers if we pray hard enough or
• 12:29
Speaker 3: long enough, or that our prayers fall on deaf ears sometimes.
• 12:33
Speaker 3: Quite the opposite. Jesus was making the point that God,
• 12:36
Speaker 3: who is perfectly good and is perfectly just, will always
• 12:42
Speaker 3: give justice and hear the cries of those who seek him.
• 12:46
Speaker 3: The challenge for us, of course, is that we don't
• 12:49
Speaker 3: often understand God's timing. But knowing that God loves us
• 12:53
Speaker 3: and is perfectly good, that his goodness and mercy follows
• 12:56
Speaker 3: us all the days of our lives, we know that
• 12:59
Speaker 3: when we pray, he hears us and cares for us.
• 13:02
Speaker 3: And in his own time and in his own way,
• 13:05
Speaker 3: he will answer us. But Jesus had more to say
• 13:09
Speaker 3: to the disciples about prayer. Because they needed to understand
• 13:13
Speaker 3: the proper posture of prayer, the principles of prayer, he
• 13:17
Speaker 3: told them about two men. And once more, the characters
• 13:20
Speaker 3: were cast in counterintuitive roles, a tax collector and a Pharisee,
• 13:25
Speaker 3: each going to the temple to pray. To all who
• 13:28
Speaker 3: heard this, They would have expected the model to be
• 13:31
Speaker 3: the righteous man, the Pharisee who kept all the rules,
• 13:35
Speaker 3: the good man so-called. The tax collector was a traitor
• 13:39
Speaker 3: and a cheat. He would never be a good example
• 13:42
Speaker 3: of prayer or anything else. Imagine the shock to the
• 13:46
Speaker 3: audience as Jesus told this story. The Pharisee stood proudly
• 13:50
Speaker 3: and spoke loudly, telling God everything about himself that made
• 13:54
Speaker 3: him better than sinners like the tax collector, reminding God
• 13:58
Speaker 3: why he had every right to be blessed. Like the
• 14:01
Speaker 3: older brother in the story of the prodigal son, this
• 14:04
Speaker 3: man felt justified by his own good deeds. But the
• 14:08
Speaker 3: tax collector, like the prodigal son who came home and
• 14:12
Speaker 3: fell on the grace of his father, this man humbled
• 14:15
Speaker 3: himself before the Lord, He said, Lord, be merciful to me,
• 14:19
Speaker 3: a sinner. And he asked God for his forgiveness. What
• 14:24
Speaker 3: then does Jesus conclude? That the one who owned up
• 14:27
Speaker 3: to his son, the man who humbled himself and asked
• 14:30
Speaker 3: for forgiveness, he was the one who went to his
• 14:33
Speaker 3: house right with God. When we humble ourselves before God,
• 14:38
Speaker 3: he always hears us. And if you want to know God,
• 14:42
Speaker 3: if you want to know Jesus as your Lord and Savior,
• 14:45
Speaker 3: Begin with that simple prayer, the prayer of this man
• 14:48
Speaker 3: who said, Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner. And
• 14:52
Speaker 3: then look to the Savior, the Lord Jesus, who died
• 14:55
Speaker 3: for our sins and rose again so that we could
• 14:57
Speaker 3: have eternal life. Dear God, we thank you for your
• 15:01
Speaker 3: word and what it teaches us about your desire to
• 15:05
Speaker 3: love us and restore us and heal us both physically
• 15:09
Speaker 3: and spiritually. May we always return with gratitude day after
• 15:13
Speaker 3: day with thanksgiving in our hearts for all that you've
• 15:16
Speaker 3: done for us. And may we always look to you
• 15:19
Speaker 3: in humility, asking for your forgiveness when we sin and
• 15:23
Speaker 3: receiving your love and grace and healing. For we pray
• 15:27
Speaker 3: in Jesus' name because your love never fails. Amen. Thank
• 15:32
Speaker 3: you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
• 15:36
Speaker 3: And before we go, I wanted to let you know
