- 2:07reporters here in West Virginia. Stephen Allen Adams from Ogden Newspapers going to join
- 2:12us, and our own Brad mclhenny will be here as well. Now,
- 2:15I thought I would kind of invite both in for a bit of a year
- 2:17in review from the political world of twenty twenty three and maybe a preview of
- 2:23the twenty twenty four political season. What's going on in the world of elections.
- 2:29Of course, we'll cover those things with Brad coming up a little bit
- 2:30later on. And I'm kind of trying to decide if the name is Adams
- 2:34and mcklhenny. I can't decide that that's a good name for a law firm
- 2:38or a seventies detective show. I just haven't quite put my finger on which
- 2:40one ball get in that a little bit later on. Also a little serious
- 2:44biz. Yesterday, we told you about this bizarre stabbing incident that took place
- 2:49over in Kanawa City at the McDonald's over there in Jeff and I, Jeff
- 2:53Jenkins and I. He was on the air talking about another story, and
- 2:55that had just broken about two hours before. We got some more information on
- 2:59that. Just a bizarre situation there in Kanas City, and we are going
- 3:02to talk about that with Jared Lewis from the newsroom coming up a little bit
- 3:07later on plus your calls the text to three zero four three four five fifty
- 3:09eight fifty eight or the text line three zero four nine three five five zero
- 3:14zero, we'd want to welcome to the show now, Western Diginian, the
- 3:16Secretary of State in Canada for Governor Mac Warner's secretary. Good morning, how
- 3:20are you. I'm doing great, basking in the glow of a nice wind
- 3:23last night mountaineers can talk about a nine and four season. Well it's better
- 3:28than go ahead, I'm sorry, just not too bad for a team that
- 3:30was picked last, dead last the league, dead last, and better to
- 3:37bask in the glow of that than to be covered in mayonnaise as coach Brown.
- 3:42Look, I'm a mayo guy, and I'm a Duke's Mayo guy.
- 3:45That's all we buy in our house. But that's a little bit. And
- 3:46when they start putting on pepperoni rolls, man, I mean, that's just
- 3:50that's not of God. Man. I mean, there's just something wrong with
- 3:53that. I think they need to pour that mess on the losing coach,
- 3:57not the winning coach. Is that I like it, I'm not going to
- 4:00go that far. The reason I wanted to have you on the show today
- 4:04as we're looking at the election coming up next year, the primarier, of
- 4:09course, will be and maybe here before you know it. I want to
- 4:11talk about poll workers. And there are a number of reasons for which we'll
- 4:15get into a little bit later on, but the bottom line is is the
- 4:17state of West Virginia is the need of poll workers for the upcoming elections.
- 4:21I know your office is undertaking several initiatives to try to make that happen for
- 4:26the upcoming election. Talk about that. Yeah, As we get ready to
- 4:29turn the corner into this twenty twenty four election year, it's important for us
- 4:33to start looking at making sure these elections are run properly. We've got this
- 4:38really divided country right now, concern over elected officials, concern over the elections
- 4:43themselves, and the best way to resolve that, to make sure that we
- 4:46have confidence in the elections is to ensure that the polls themselves where the precincts
- 4:49where people vote are run properly. And so what we've done is turned towards
- 4:56the group. The most respected institution cine America is the military, and being
- 5:00a military veteran myself, I want to call on fellow veterans this year and
- 5:05say step up once again, just like you did the first time when you
- 5:10raised your hand and swore to protect the Constitution. Now it's time to go
- 5:13out there and protect this republic by working at the polls, making sure the
- 5:16elections are run properly. Let's stop the conspiracy theories and those sorts of things.
- 5:20And the way to do that is to work at the polls. And
- 5:24so it's a real easy process. You can go to our website, go
- 5:29vote wv dot com. You can talk to your county clerk, or you
- 5:33can talk to your county executive committee. So there are a number of ways
- 5:38just to express your interest. And what we've done this elective service playing off
- 5:43the World War two selective service system where you had Uncle Sam pointing his fingers
- 5:47saying I want you to serve. Well, we want you to serve in
- 5:51our election process by working at the polls. And for those that may not
- 5:57know the way the poll workers system works as you said, you know,
- 6:00you can go on to the website or you can contact your your respective executive
- 6:04committees of your respective parties in your area to get on the on the rolls
- 6:08to be a it's it's a long day, you know. Polls open in
- 6:12West Virginia, sir at six thirty am, and they're we're made able to
- 6:15seven thirty pm. Most poll workers are going to arrive at five, you
- 6:17know, five thirty or so. Uh. And the process towards the end
- 6:21of the night is not nearly as long or as tedious as it used to
- 6:25be because the technology and things, so you can you know, be out
- 6:28of there, uh maybe hour hour and a half after the polls go.
- 6:30It's a little bit more in some areas, a little bit less, but
- 6:33it's a good way to make some change because there's I mean, I mean,
- 6:38it's not a bad payday, secretary for one day of work, No,
- 6:43it's not. The compensation is fair. It's a nice you know,
- 6:46people use they to do it for the money, but they do it for
- 6:48civic causes and being a part of the community and being a part of the
- 6:51election process. But you do get paid for it. You also get paid
- 6:55for the training. And that's why we're starting now early, is because these
- 6:59courts are going to search the poll worker training here in just a couple of
- 7:01months, and so we have to have those names in and set up the
- 7:05trainings and that sort of thing. And we need about eighty four hundred people
- 7:10throughout this state to run these polls. We have one thousand, six hundred
- 7:14and eighty precincts and each one of those requires five people, so it is
- 7:17manpower intensive, and we've always met our quota. We've always we've always got
- 7:24those polls open throughout the state, and in a couple counties it's been pretty
- 7:28close. So that's why we want to get started early and encourage people to
- 7:32sign up and become a poll worker. I have a question here via the
- 7:35text line for you, and it says, do you have to be a
- 7:40poll worker in the precinct you live in or can it be where one is
- 7:43needed? Even more, even though you don't live in that particular precinct,
- 7:47it can be where it's needed. The requirements so you have to be eighteen,
- 7:51you have to be able to reading, you have to be a registered
- 7:55voters. Those are the requirements. But you know, a clerk can move
- 7:58you to another location needed as the best I remember from my experience when I
- 8:03when I work for the officer is that they try as best to put you
- 8:07I guess if they have an opening in your precinct to making. But sometimes
- 8:09it just doesn't work out that way. And in Kanawa County, you could
- 8:13live in one area, you know, let's say Saint Albans, but they
- 8:16need you somewhere else across county exactly. We had one case where a woman
- 8:20actually gave birth who was a poll worker the night before, and so we
- 8:22had to get somebody to go in that situation. So those situations do arise,
- 8:28but you're absolutely correct. We try to keep you in that local area
- 8:31because we want people who know other people. And this last election or twenty
- 8:37twenty election, the board of realtors stepped up and said, we'll give extra
- 8:41credit to our board of realtors who worked the polls because it brought them in
- 8:46contact with their customers, the clientele, and it was a civic engagement.
- 8:50And so I would encourage you if you're part of a church group or a
- 8:54civic group, you might encourage your group to, you know, on mosque
- 8:56go in and register as a worker. And again you can do that online
- 9:01at go vote WV dot com. And we had a question here somebody asking
- 9:05about the pay. That really varies on the particular county secretary. It does.
- 9:11I think it's anywhere from one hundred dollars to three hundred dollars depending on
- 9:15where you're at the counties. That's a county run program, so I would
- 9:20say an average two hundred and fifty dollars for that day, plus you also
- 9:26get paid for the training. You usually have a two hour training sometime before
- 9:30the election day and then the way they make those trainings available. I know
- 9:33in the larger counties, especially like Canawa County, they have several clerk McCormick
- 9:37and Hurt and her crew here do a great job with that in Canawha County,
- 9:41I know, because they would do them like early in the morning,
- 9:43they do middays, they did evenings. I think they may have even done
- 9:46some weekends. So they'll get you trained up, that's right. They'll they
- 9:52set them up at various times and places. So the key is just to
- 9:56get involved, let the clerk know and the clerk can handle it from there.
- 10:00The count executive committees are the first line. But if you're not into
- 10:03the you know, Republican or Democrat politics or whatever, just call your county
- 10:07clerk or come online and get the information there. All right, Well,
- 10:11secretary, I've got to ask you this before we let you go. I
- 10:13know you and under then the other candidates for governor hopefully getting a little bit
- 10:16of rest over the holiday season. But you guys will be back out back
- 10:20out on the road soon. I'm sure. Well we are. We're looking
- 10:22forward to it. It's time for game one. Yeah, somebody, here's
- 10:26another question. Uh, you're a popular guide today, everybody asking all these
- 10:31questions. But Tex says, if it is busy, is there a time
- 10:33poll workers get to vote themselves? Now, that's like a provisional type situation,
- 10:37can be right? Uh, the poll workers can they do vote?
- 10:43When again they're they're downtime stream of to day. I can tell you that's
- 10:46when the poll workers can vote, or if they're out of the precinct.
- 10:50Yes, you can vote a provisional ballot, or you've got early voting too,
- 10:52you know you could try to do the voting. Yeah, I mean
- 10:56they're gonna they're gonna let you vote for sure, but we do appreciate the
- 11:00textures for texting in those questions. Well, Secretary, I hope you and
- 11:03your family have a wonderful twenty twenty four. As I said, I kind
- 11:07of started talking about the campaign a little bit. Well, we'll leave that
- 11:09to another time. Best of luck to you out on the trail and all
- 11:13the other candidates as well. We'll talk again in the new year. Happy
- 11:16New Year, Happy new Year to you and everybody listening. Thank you,

- 11:46Adams and Brad mclainney coming up in studio just a little bit later on before
- 11:48we go to break though, I want to bring in for the newsroom,
- 11:50Jared Lewis Jarrett. Good morning, Jeff and I started on the show yesterday
- 11:58talking about this situation with the with a murder over on the West end of
- 12:03Charleston, and we learned later that at a nine month old baby was graized
- 12:07in that. But in the midst of that, it was totally unrelated situation
- 12:11with this really bizarre situation with stabbings going on in Kanash City. An employee
- 12:16there of McDonald's in Kanas City, four people. I think we're stabbed.
- 12:22Take the story from there. Yeah, you're right. It was a very
- 12:26bizarre kind of I don't know, ten twelve hours, I guess in there.
- 12:28But it started Wednesday morning the McDonald's and Kanas City. There's an employee
- 12:33of the McDonald's. He was identified as Percy Woody. He's of Charleston,
- 12:39he's lived here. Police said that he's had instances like this before, but
- 12:45Chief Dempsey said back in twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen, he also had instances
- 12:50of malicious wounding. But this instance started yesterday morning before eight o'clock, there
- 12:56was a report that there were two employees of the restaurant that he worked at
- 13:00that he had stabbed or cut. Chief Dempsey said they weren't necessarily full on
- 13:05stabbings, if you will, Some of them may have been just grazes or
- 13:09cuts, but still taken seriously and injuries were sustained. So two employees were
- 13:15cut, and then a customer of the store was also cut by Woody.
- 13:20So then he dips out of the McDonald's, goes down the street, ends
- 13:24up cutting a woman who's standing outside of her home just mining her own business.
- 13:30That's what Chief Dempsey said. She had no idea what was going on,
- 13:33she was just standing there, and sure enough she gets attacked. And
- 13:35so there were a total of four victims that were either stabbed or cut.
- 13:41And then as officers were coming in on Woody to take him into custody,
- 13:45he was also cutting himself. But you know, they were able to detain
- 13:48him and there were minor injuries sustained in that. So, yeah, very
- 13:52very bizarre instance. Chief Dempsey had said, you know, there have been
- 13:58cases like this before, but uh, with four people, you know,
- 14:01that's uh, you don't see that very often. Yeah, I mean,
- 14:03and it's just a you know, a bizarre situation that happened. I mean,
- 14:09you go in trab crab coffee, orn egg McMuffin or something that's the
- 14:13least of the things that you expect to happen. And there's no motive I
- 14:16mean for this. We don't know why this guy did this as of right
- 14:18now. That's that's what Chief Dempsey said. He had a presser yesterday where
- 14:22he talked about the murder from from Tuesday night as well, but also mentioning,
- 14:28uh, the uh, the the stabbing incidents from from yesterday morning.
- 14:31Again, this happened in Kanalla City well before eight am. And like you
- 14:35said, I mean, it's not very often that you're gonna go into the
- 14:39McDonald's. You're gonna get your your egg McMuffin or whatever it is, or
- 14:43your coffee, and then this all this all breaks out. Yeah. Well,
- 14:46uh, there's gonna be plenty more to come out on this story.
- 14:48This gentleman was no stranger uh to uh to law enforcement. O offically had
- 14:54a rap sheet to pretty much a mile long. So we'll let you get
- 14:58back to it. To Jared, I appreciate you taking time I were scheduled
- 15:01to be here, and of course we'll have more on the websites and on
- 15:03the air and on the social media. Jarret Lewis from the newsroom. Thanks
- 15:05a lot, man, Thanks to It is nine twenty two. It is
- 15:09worth noting that in Canosity yesterday again not as Jared's had not believed in any
- 15:15way to be related to the murder on the West Side that entered that infant
- 15:18late Tuesday night. I will say this and file this one under what the
- 15:24hell is wrong with our criminal justice system? I mean, this guy who's
- 15:28accused in these stabbings has been charged this time around with four council malicious wounding.
- 15:31Other charges through the years include another malicious wounding, fleeing from an officer,
- 15:37battery and a government official brandishing a deadly weapon, obstructing an officer,
- 15:41public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and domestic battery. Those are some of the
- 15:48prior charges that this guy have. Everybody's innocent in this case still proven guilty,
- 15:54But I mean, you know, it's you know, you know,
- 16:00to wonder editorial common here at why in the world is this guy still out
- 16:03on the streets, your guests, And that is as good as Mine nine

- 18:55best kept secret in Charles Before I get Stephen il Adams and Brad mackawhoney,
- 18:59I didn't want to pass long. Yesterday I was talking about the comments from
- 19:02last week's Knawa County Board of Education meeting as it pertains to transgender students and
- 19:07the Supreme Court saying that school officials must let kids use the restrooms of their
- 19:11gender that they identify with. Most there was a Derek Evans who spoke during
- 19:17the public comment period of the meeting and and said, among other things,
- 19:19the board members should be fired from their daytime jobs for paraphrasing here allowing sexual
- 19:26harassment of kids, et cetera, et cetera. I wondered aloud if it
- 19:30was that Derrek Evians, you know of the Derek Evans is in the capitol
- 19:33thing. Of course I should have known it was, should have recognized the
- 19:37voice. And now Dave Wonders allow allowed WHI is Derek Evans who lives in
- 19:44Wayne County speaking during the public comment period of a Knawa County Board of Education
- 19:48meeting. I'll leave that one not so, Yes, it was the same
- 19:52Derek Avians. Welcome in from AUGDT the newspapers. Steven Allen Adams, good
- 19:56morning, sir, how are you? Good morning? Thank you for clearing
- 19:57that up, because I had seen that too, and I knew that he
- 20:02had posted something on social media about I don't follow him, but he posted
- 20:06something about that, and then I had seen the story like that can't be
- 20:10the same. Derek Evans apparently was Brad Mcklelhenny is with us as well.
- 20:14Brad, how are you, man, It's great to see you. We're
- 20:17gonna have to work on Brad's microphone. Yeah, we got an issue here
- 20:21with Brad's microphone. Stephen, Stephen, Yeah, we may yeah, yeah,
- 20:26it's a little a little loud in here, so we're gonna have to
- 20:27do a little work on Brad's micro I can't decide whether Adams and mclhanny makes
- 20:33a better law firm name or seventies crime drama. I can't decide what would
- 20:38you have any idea? Well, you know, I I'm picturing now perfect.
- 20:49I love it. We need to get T shirts printed. I'm picturing
- 20:52now Brad or Steven maybe sliding across the hood of a car, as in
- 20:56the opening segment of Starskin hut, just the good old boys we are.
- 21:00I like it. Yeah, sounds good. It sounds a lot better.
- 21:03Ryan. I appreciate it. Thank you, Thank you very much. Steven
- 21:04uh So, how about this cameo appearance. But Derek Avians at the Canawa
- 21:08County Board meeting last week, Guess I've never heard of him. I mean,
- 21:14he's you got to give him, I guess a little bit of credit
- 21:18because I mean he's gotten some news out of that. But at the same
- 21:21time, nobody knew of his him. So how good of news coverage for
- 21:26him as far as name id could that have possibly been? You know,
- 21:30that campaign's kind of quiet. Most of the House campaigns really are kind of
- 21:33quiet right now anyway, because it's still a little early yet. But you
- 21:37know, he's got big shoes to try to fill by trying to, you
- 21:41know, defeat Carol Miller in that race, and I will see if he
- 21:45can like run up the scoreboard. But I was a little disappointed that we
- 21:48didn't hear like some really cool audio like Derek Avins is at the school board,
- 21:55Derek Cavins' is at the chalkboard, you know, Okay, like we
- 21:56did the Cavian I think that would have been kind of and maybe wearing a
- 22:00helmet. Yes, yes, yeah, you know it was the same guy,
- 22:04guys. I had Secretary of State and candidate for Governor Mac Warner on
- 22:07the show earlier. A nothing groundbreaking or earth shattering like the CIA working with
- 22:11a big tactic steal an election, anything like that. We did discuss the
- 22:14need for poll workers though in West Virginia in all seriousness, and I know
- 22:18this from my time having worked there, Steve, and you're also a veteran
- 22:19of that office. The average pole worker age in West Virginia something like eighty
- 22:25eight years old. And there's nothing wrong with eighty eight year olds, don't
- 22:26get me wrong. But I'm just saying, in talking to them, as
- 22:30I did with the office, there were many of them that said, you
- 22:32know what, I'd like to maybe move on and not do this anymore,
- 22:36but there's no one to take my place. And so now I give Secretary
- 22:40Warner and his office credit for trying to recruit, and they've got an initiative
- 22:45of going now with veterans, trying to get veterans to be poll workers.
- 22:48You know, we need pole workers in West Virginia. But here's the thing
- 22:53that maybe I should have asked Mack when I had him on. I'm trying
- 22:57to keep it everything nice for the holiday, see and whatever. Maybe,
- 23:02just maybe with all of the scrutiny that there is on poll workers and election
- 23:07workers across America, not so much in West Virginia, but across America,
- 23:11now, maybe that makes it a little harder to recruit poll workers. Is
- 23:15that just an off the wall thought of my brain? You know, there
- 23:18was a significant news story within the last few weeks in Georgia where poll workers
- 23:26Ruby Freeman and Shay Moss, a mother and daughter pollworker duo, intended to
- 23:30do public service. They were land basted over and over by Rudy Giuliani,
- 23:34one of the former president's allies, and by the former president himself, which
- 23:40resulted in a variety of actions against them. The mob came after him,
- 23:44they received death threats. That entire experience was just a lightning rod of awful
- 23:51behavior by segments of the public. And they got one hundred and forty eight
- 23:55million dollars out of Rudy Giuliani's hide. He can't afford to actually pay it.
- 23:59But you know, we are, unfortunately in a time where that act
- 24:03of public service. It should be a quiet day or a few weeks of
- 24:07performing your duty. You can wind up absolutely in the public crosshairs. And
- 24:12you know, as as a society, we've got to tone that down,
- 24:15So don't. I don't see a situation where that would ever happen in West
- 24:19Virginia, but happened in Georgia, so you know, and it's mac Warner
- 24:26doesn't as the Secretary of State, does not have any kind of jurisdiction over
- 24:30the situation in Georgia. But it has to be a situation where where people
- 24:37can believe that they operate behind the scenes and that they are not going to
- 24:41receive death threats or that kind of eye profile, and that they're not going
- 24:45to be the story, that they're going to be the story, that they're
- 24:48not going to be the story. Well, here's another problem that I see
- 24:49that we're having. And it's happening with pole workers, especially with the ones
- 24:52that are getting older to do want to take a break from it. It's
- 24:56happening across many different aspects of our society and culture, even veterans groups,
- 25:00where younger people are not stepping up into these roles. And I don't know
- 25:07if that's an issue with distrust of institutions that we see a lot of right
- 25:12now. But veterans groups are having a hard time getting younger people to join
- 25:17American American Legion and vets things of that nature. It's really becoming kind of
- 25:22a problem and we're seeing this, I think play out also among poll workers,
- 25:26where it is mostly you know, people that you would expect to be
- 25:30your grandparents and people like that, be younger people aren't stepping up into these
- 25:33roles and they really should. Well, you don't want to stereotype any you
- 25:37know, I don't want to be accused of ageism or anything. But I
- 25:40can tell you again, drawing from my experience working with the Secretary of State's
- 25:42office, when we would go in to schools to do voter registration drives and
- 25:47we would talk to assemblies and sometimes we would just go in and talk about
- 25:49the totally nonpartists and just talk about the importance of getting involved in the process.
- 25:56We would go in frequently. This is one of the things I did
- 25:59with the office. I would go in, I'd go to a name high
- 26:00school and talk to the kids and talk to them about being poll workers.
- 26:06And when I told them that polls open at six thirty and that they have
- 26:10to be on site by five thirty. I lost about half of them there,
- 26:12even though, as Mike said, Secretary of Warning, I should say
- 26:15said, it's as much as in some areas three hundred dollars a day to
- 26:21be a poll worker. Average is about two to two fifty including the training
- 26:26session. Not a bad paycheck, you know, for I'm not trying to
- 26:29downplay what they do, but not a bad paycheck. Not like you're digging
- 26:32ditches. I mean, you know, you're kind of sitting sitting there.
- 26:33It does get busy at times. That was one of the things that lost
- 26:37them. But another reason that I lost a lot of them when I would
- 26:40try to recruit them was we told them they couldn't have their phone, and
- 26:45cell phones are illegal inside the voting booth number one. But it's kind of
- 26:52frowned upon to have them at the desk when you check in, and to
- 26:59try to tell and again, adults can be just as you know, older
- 27:02folks can be just as guilty as young people. But to try to tell
- 27:04a twenty year old you have to go without your phone from six thirty am
- 27:11to seven thirty pm. You can pay them one hundred thousand dollars. It
- 27:15ain't happen. I would have a hard time going on without my phone.
- 27:18I would I would reach for my phantom phone all day. But on the
- 27:22other and I think I would look at it as a as a worthy break.
- 27:26You could sell it to me, Dave by by leaving you you are
- 27:29required to leave your phone at HOOM and you cannot look at it all day,
- 27:32and I might think that's a nice break. Yeah, I'm off the
- 27:36grid, man, I'm off the grid when I go camping. I turned
- 27:37my phone off, So take me off the grid for for a day.
- 27:41I'm cool with it. Yeah. Well, apparently not everybody feels that way.
- 27:45And again it's not just young people. There's a lot of old people,
- 27:48older people like myself that probably have an issue with that as well.
- 27:51But Dave Allen Show on five Idea Live was brought to you part by Bridge

- 28:11public service should be a couple of weeks. The exact same can be said
- 28:15for members of Congress. Actual public service, not corrupted careers. Mister Adams
- 28:22Well, a buddy of by Matt Lewis, actually wrote a really good book
- 28:26that came out over the summer talking about really how members of Congress enriched themselves
- 28:32while they're in office when they're out of office, and it's a real fascinating
- 28:36book. It is real interesting how some members of Congress are able to parlay
- 28:41their experiences in order to enrich themselves and make sometimes millions. Thanks Ractlhanny,
- 28:48maybe we should How do you feel about term limits? Totally totally off the
- 28:52wall question, but playing off that, how do you feel about uh?
- 28:55You know, I am of the believer that the voters themselves can enforce term
- 28:59limits. They've got options every couple of years, four years, six years
- 29:03in the case of the US Senate, so it should be up to voters.
- 29:04But there, you know, there are other forces. Once you are
- 29:07an incumbent, it's it's pretty hard to beat you. But it's not impossible,
- 29:12you know. I believe that Joe Manchin took a look at the numbers
- 29:17versus a potential matchup with Jim Justice, and he decided to de term limit
- 29:22himself. He did. Indeed, I've said it before, and I've said
- 29:25it to Steven. Maybe I've said it to you, and I've said it
- 29:26on the show. With all due respect to Senator Joe Manchin, who has
- 29:30quite a winning record when it comes to elections, Joe Manchin goes head to
- 29:33head with Jim Justice in that Senate race, Joe Manson gets beat handily.
- 29:37In my opinion, I think he does as long as the de's by his
- 29:41name. I can still see depending on who the Democratic candidate might be.
- 29:45You won't really know till the filing period ands at the end of January,
- 29:48but I could still see a scenario where he might be willing to try to
- 29:52come back and pull Joe Lieberman and run as a right and independent and try
- 29:56to get on the ballot that way. But I think that only happens depending
- 29:57on who the Democratic candidate it is and depending on the situation with Jim Justice,
- 30:02because by then he could have been beat up pretty good during the primary
- 30:04with Mooney. But I mean, I don't think it really matters so Stephen,
- 30:08because everything in the world has been thrown at Jim Justice as far as
- 30:12his financial issues, it just keeps piling on and piling on more and more.
- 30:18You pick up the paper, listen to Brad who you're what you write,
- 30:21and it's just every day and people just don't care. They just simply
- 30:25don't care, you know. I think that is in part because none of
- 30:30these financial crises ever seem to have an endpoint. They get delayed or there's
- 30:34a settlement behind the scenes, and then they eventually pop back up. There
- 30:40is a There are a couple of things that are still in the air.
- 30:44One is the three hundred million dollar claim by Justice's longtime banker, Quarter Bank,
- 30:49that could be resolved potentially by a judge in Martinsville, Virginia by the
- 30:53end of next month. That judge could say, look, you owe it,
- 30:57you signed and so if there were finally a resolution like that, where
- 31:03it's a clear cut and dry conclusion, then that potentially could change, that
- 31:08could resonate with the citizens and the voters. But you're right, it hasn't
- 31:12so far. Well, I mean, look a Donald Trump, I mean
- 31:15former President Trump. The more legal issues, the more that's thrown at him,
- 31:18the more popular he becomes. I think, weirdly enough, there's some
- 31:22sympathy a little bit to place in the list too, because how many people
- 31:25out there you've got bills that you haven't paid, or you've got mortgages or
- 31:30that you're behind on or things of that nature. And I know people would
- 31:33think Jim Justice, being as rich as he is, theoretically you would think
- 31:38that people wouldn't have sympathy for that guy. But because he comes across as
- 31:42folks see and down the earth, I think there's some sympathetic factory to place
- 31:47into that. I agree with that big difference though, between you know,
- 31:49a billion dollars and then and missing the payment on your ninety five dollars dart.
- 31:53I mean, I think there could be a big difference, But I
- 31:56do understand what you are saying. Tech says. If the voters choose,
- 32:00then with that argument, there would be no term limits for every other political
- 32:04office. And there are some, you know, especially in the county.
- 32:07I know sheriffs in West Virginia they can only serve two terms. So governor's
- 32:10limited to two terms. Governor's limited two terms. Yeah, indeed, Texas,
- 32:15no phone, just listen to music. Sorry, I've got to have
- 32:16my serious XM Elvis Radio says, says a little love for the king there,

- 35:50was a poll worker. It was the longest day of my life. It
- 35:52is. It is a long day. I mean, it is a long
- 35:55day. But one thing I've always said about poll workers, guys, they'll
- 35:59never starve to death because in traveling this data as I did when I worked
- 36:01for the Secretary's Office, there's a lot of food, well, a lot
- 36:06of food to be had. The I don't want to make it sound like
- 36:08that it's not a hard job because it candy and it's busy. It is,
- 36:12but I will tell you, depending on how many moons ago that you
- 36:15were a pole worker, it was probably a lot harder. You know,
- 36:16the technology has improved a good deal. I think it's streamlined some things to
- 36:22some extent, so it might be a little easier. Should you want to
- 36:25come back and try again? Yeah, Texas, Dave, could you please
- 36:29give a belated birthday wish to one of your longtime listeners, Jim Brown.
- 36:32Thanks indeed, Happy birthday, Birthday, Happy birthday, Jim. All Right,
- 36:37gentlemen, Last week, just after appearing on this show, delicate more,
- 36:39Capito announced he was resigning his position of a legislature to focus on his
- 36:44run for governor. Although I have to say that speaking for me, it
- 36:47did not surprise me. I thought the timing was a little strange, especially
- 36:52since just two hours before he was on this very show and didn't mention it
- 36:55or even in the green room while we were having coffee and say, hey,
- 36:59there's going to be a big announce not not but more Capito owes me
- 37:01anything. But but I do you kind of thought that, you know,
- 37:05a little bit of a hint. I did not see it coming on that
- 37:07particular day. Any thoughts from Stephen or Brady, Well, I mean,
- 37:13you know, Brad's a good friend of mine and we text a lot,
- 37:15so you know, as reporters were often on the zoom, the participating questions
- 37:21and going into Christmas, you know, no one can foid the text.
- 37:24Yeah, yeah, nobody can foil the text. I wasn't going to go
- 37:27on the zoom. I think you said you probably weren't going to go on
- 37:30the zoom. We didn't know anything about this at all, and then of
- 37:34course they had their tech problems, so when the briefing was apparently going on,
- 37:38we didn't even realize it was going on because it wasn't streaming on YouTube
- 37:42and it wasn't even streaming on Twitter. It turned out the only place that
- 37:45appeared was Facebook. So you know, we didn't took it took a tiny
- 37:50day for us to figure out what was going on. It suppressed the splash,
- 37:53yeah it did. Yeah, you know, as a strategy, I
- 37:58can understand that for a significant office like governor is time consuming to campaign and
- 38:06to get out around the state. On the other hand, if you're going
- 38:08to be judiciary chairman, that is a significant part of legislative leadership. You
- 38:15are in the middle of significant bills that are in the news on a daily
- 38:21basis. And you know, I will say with in what I hope is
- 38:25fairness to more capital, his slogan has been I'm to get it done conservative
- 38:32and now he's stepped away from that active position to campaign but not to currently
- 38:38be part of the legislative process. So I'm still thinking through it. But
- 38:44I just wonder why in the cold months on January and February, where there
- 38:51are not festivals and bean dinners are at a minimum, why you wouldn't be
- 38:55where the news is. Yeah, text Seria says a Resils. I mean
- 39:00his chairmanship would not have been surprising. Resigning the entire seat, though,
- 39:04is quite shocking. Yeah, I would agree with that because I think and
- 39:07that plays into a little bit at least if you're still in the legislature,
- 39:10you can have votes and you can put yourself on the record and then you
- 39:14can go out and campaign. See I voted for this or I recommend it
- 39:19in better your lives this way. So that's actually I think a pretty well
- 39:22taken point. It might have been better for him just to step down because,
- 39:27as Brad said, I mean, every bill has to go through practically
- 39:30two committees. It's either Judiciary or it's Finance, and they are major committees
- 39:36and it's a huge task. Well, I'm going to be interested kind of
- 39:39pivoting off that a little bit. I'm going to be really interested to see
- 39:43who becomes the new chairman of that committee because it's so powerful. There's certainly
- 39:46some lawmakers there. You would think that the vice chair, which is Tom
- 39:50Fast, which I think this is his last year, anyway, he'd be
- 39:53issueing I've heard Brandon Deli get Brandon Steele is wanting it, which is possibly
- 39:59why he didn't decide to run for a circuit judge position down there. There's
- 40:04all sorts of things that they could go in. So I'll be curious to
- 40:06know who takes the baton from more Capito in that committee. Yeah, it's
- 40:09uh, it's gonna be interesting to see. I guess what I have this
- 40:14whole thing plays out. I want to move on to another candidate for Governor's
- 40:16Patrick Morrisey, just checking the room does does Patrick Morrisey still hate us all?
- 40:22You know, I haven't seen him since there was a forum for gubernatorial
- 40:27candidates in Morgantown and we each were headed for the dessert bar and we got
- 40:31along fine. We united over our appreciation for dessert. So I think,
- 40:36well, I'll say, and I say that kind of tongue in cheek,
- 40:37because you know, Patrick Morrissey, attorney General, in his role as Attorney
- 40:40General, is a regular on this show on a regular basis, say,
- 40:44and I'm not talking too much inside baseball here, I personally, even though
- 40:47I'm a very very very small part of Metro News and this, I have
- 40:52a desk. I have a desk upstairs. I was taken aback by some
- 40:58of his comments about fake news and fake media, and as you and I,
- 41:01Brad, I think, had that conversation that didn't seem to be fake
- 41:05news. When when you want on the show, you know, I mean,
- 41:07and my question and when his folks, who are very great people to
- 41:12deal with, reached out to me by coming on the show, my comment
- 41:14was, well, why would he want to come on the show if it's
- 41:15fake news? I don't mean, why would he want to lower himself to
- 41:19that. Now, if he wanted to come on as a candidate, I'm
- 41:22I can't deny him with that. But I don't know if I'm going to
- 41:23give free time to somebody who callsed the news organization a fake news outlet.
- 41:28I mean, just probably that's my call completely, not not on behalf of
- 41:32the company or anything, just my call. I said. Now, I'll
- 41:35have him on as a Canada, but not so much as AG because we're
- 41:37fake news. Yeah, I get that. I actually had a conversation just
- 41:42yesterday on the phone with him for a story I'm working on for this weekend,
- 41:45which was pleasant. I mean it was all off the record, but
- 41:49we all, you know, talked, talked about campaign and things of that
- 41:52nature. So I've had a few conversations with him since since then. And
- 41:58that's always the struggle, because you know, the persona that certain candidates put
- 42:01out, particularly on social media, versus how they interact with you in person.
- 42:08It's different. I get their plane to a certain type of primary voter
- 42:14that they think is going to vote for him based on that sort of stuff,
- 42:16but they got to remember to do and it's pretty easy to pick up,
- 42:22you know, good reporters, bad reporters, fair reporters on fair reporters.
- 42:24But I think most of us are trying to do a fair job and
- 42:28just tell the story. And you're better off just not trashing us, but
- 42:31working with us, because we're not out to get you. We're ro out
- 42:35to tell a story, and the more you talk to us, the better
- 42:37the story we can tell. I will say that in that period where there
- 42:43was a lot of morrisy World discussion of fake news, I wondered not only
- 42:49about the relationship with shows like this one, but there are other fine nine
- 42:52AM shows in the Metro News zone across the state, one in Beckley,
- 42:58one in Martinsburg, one in Morgantown, And to strain the relationship with any
- 43:04of those shows, I wondered about the logic and the strategy there. And
- 43:07then you know, skipping out on the debate and doing your own live streamed
- 43:13event to each his own. That wouldn't have been my advice to not be
- 43:19there when it's it seems to me a competitive race, and there were three
- 43:22candidates there who were trying to draw a distinction, and you know, anybody
- 43:28who was interested in the race, it was clear that he was not there
- 43:30again, that's that's his decision, but it wouldn't have been my advice.
- 43:35Texas, ask the gents your jets now ask the gems. Must be confused
- 43:38with somebody else my top hat. If Big Daddy Jim officially endorses Capito,
- 43:44how much does that affect the race? Well, you can make the argument
- 43:47it kind of happened now, of course they I've talked to a few people
- 43:51behind the scenes in the More Capitol campaign to see what happened last week is
- 43:54greasing the skids for an endorsement. And of course, just to be clear,
- 44:00many of the governor's top advisors and officials have donated to the More Capital
- 44:05campaign, so money wise, they have basically blessed More Capital. And of
- 44:08course Senator Shelley Moore Capito endorsed Jim Justice at his campaign announcement in April.
- 44:15So this is pretty much all but officially done. I mean, the governor
- 44:19I think said on that briefing that not to consider this an official endorsement a
- 44:23more Capital But I don't know how you can't really already see that it's coming.
- 44:29What difference that makes though, I don't know. I mean whether the
- 44:31Governor's popularity is something that creates coattails that More Capital can write. I don't
- 44:37know. It remains to be seen. I mean it seems like an alignment.
- 44:40Senator Capito, as stated earlier, has endorsed Jim Justice did right away,
- 44:46and More Capital has endorsed GYM Justice officially. But if it goes the
- 44:52other way, you know, I think so a Trump endorsement means a great
- 44:57deal, and Trump is a unique political figure in some ways. Jim Justice
- 45:04is cut from that same mold, a rich guy who connects somehow with the
- 45:10broader population. But I'm not sure people feel as passionately to identify with Justice
- 45:19the way they do Trump. So I'm just not sure it's going to have
- 45:23that as significant an effect. It seems to me that people like Jim Justice.
- 45:29They like a dog. They have warm and fuzzy feelings, might like
- 45:31to hug him, But I don't know that they necessarily blow the way the
- 45:37Jim Justice wind blows. Yeah, nine fifty three. But Dave Island Chilling

- 48:34happen to hear Cinder Finance Chair Eric Tarr on the show yesterday explaining the big
- 48:37fundraiser at Edgewood that has some on edge identity, including Robert Karnes. I
- 48:44did catch that yesterday and I did. If nothing else you know, as
- 48:47a reporter that covers campaign finance stuff, I do find the at least a
- 48:52little refreshing that he kind of leaned into it. You know, dang right.
- 48:57We had the fundraisers, those people that were upset about it because it
- 49:00was like, what ten thousand dollars a plate or something, you know like
- 49:04that, and they were saying that, and the Democrats made a deal out
- 49:07of it. But more importantly, some of the Republicans made a big deal
- 49:10out of this. And Senator tar to his defense, you know, it's
- 49:14just said yesterday basically, hey, wasn't paid to play or anything like that.
- 49:16It's just we got to have money. And look at how much money
- 49:22the Democrats and he used the term unions and trial lawyers and things that much
- 49:25money that they raise. Well, I'm sorry to say I missed the appearance.
- 49:30What was that doing yesterday? You were roaming around here to go to
- 49:34something. I don't know what you were doing. You're trying to get a
- 49:36trying to get a T shirt or something. I don't know what you were
- 49:37doing, because you know you were just that's a good motivation, looking for
- 49:40free food. Yeah, exactly. So I want to bring this up too,
- 49:45and it has to do with Senator Mansion. Now he's starting his US
- 49:50tour, I understand. I think he's got the Steve Miller band opening up
- 49:52for him. I'm not sure, but he's going all around America trying to
- 49:58find the truth or something like that, some kind of an old fable or
- 50:00something. I don't know what he's doing, but trying to trying to gauge
- 50:06the the peed offness, if you will, of the American electorate. For
- 50:12lack of a better term, what do you think of Senator Mansion. Yeah,
- 50:15I know he's going to be up in New Hampshire, I believe at
- 50:17an event, and I just don't know. I really kind of running for
- 50:25a third party is really just I feel like it's Indiana Jones in the Quest
- 50:30for the Holy Grail and everyone's trying to get it and everyone thinks they can
- 50:34keep it, but nobody can keep it. And I know Mansion things.
- 50:38Maybe he might have a recipe in order to have a successful third party campaign.
- 50:44I don't see it, and I suspect he will see it at some
- 50:47point and maybe just parlay this into his own organization. But I have been
- 50:52wondering what shape his search for the middle will take. And now we're beginning
- 50:57to see this is an issues in Eggs kind of style event in New Hampshire,
- 51:01which is significant because it's an early primary state. You know, I
- 51:07wondered, well, if you're going out in search of America, are you
- 51:08going to diners to talk to people like Brad, Dave and Stephen? Are
- 51:14you going to talk to Is it a blend of all that? And so
- 51:17now we see he's addressing people who are very interested in politics. I agree
- 51:24that I'm not sure there is a third party path because of this thing called
- 51:29the electoral College. You know, it is fine to say that there is
- 51:32a significant movement of support for individual voters, but the electoral college takes states,
- 51:40and the states lean one way or another. West Virginia is gonna go
- 51:45Republican for the presidential election. California is gonna go Democratic, so is New
- 51:51York. So what are the states that you, as a third party candidate
- 51:54hope to hope to get the votes of in the electrical code? Guys,
- 51:58real quick, what are you looking forward to in the new years? What's
- 52:01your New Year's resolution? Brad? You know, I am nearing middle age
- 52:07and trying to be more physically active, and I hope to do that while
- 52:09Stephen and I sit at five hour meetings. See going on a cruz at
- 52:15the end of the session and in between the primary, so that way I'm
- 52:17relaxed, all right, guys, I appreciate you both being here. Check
- 52:21out brad stuff on our website and on the air. Stephen with Ogden Newspapers.
