- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:07to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host Andrew Mcgibbon for November 10th.
- 0:13Today is Sesame Street Day, celebrating one of the most
- 0:17influential children's programs in television history.
- 0:21Sesame Street premiered on November 10th, 1969, Rated by
- 0:26Joan Ganz Cooney and featuring Jim Henson's beloved Muppets.
- 0:31It was revolutionary, the first show designed specifically to
- 0:36use television's power to educate young children,
- 0:40especially those from underserved communities.
- 0:43For over 50 years, Sesame Street has taught generations of kids
- 0:49their ABC's, how to count, and perhaps most importantly, how to
- 0:53be kind, curious, and confident. Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch,
- 0:58Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie, or as I like to call them, Ernie
- 1:04and Bert. These characters became trusted
- 1:07friends who taught us that learning could be joyful.
- 1:11What makes Sesame Street remarkable isn't just its
- 1:14longevity, it's that the show understood something profound.
- 1:19Education and entertainment aren't opposites.
- 1:23They're partners. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:27from, you guessed it, Jim Henson, the creative genius
- 1:32behind The Muppets. You once said kids don't
- 1:36remember what you try to teach them, they remember what you
- 1:41are. This quote captures why Sesame
- 1:44Street worked so brilliantly. The show never lectured.
- 1:49It didn't talk down to kids or force feed information.
- 1:53Instead, it created a world where learning was simply part
- 1:58of being alive. The characters modeled
- 2:01curiosity, kindness, resilience and joy.
- 2:04They made mistakes, apologized, tried to gain.
- 2:08They showed rather than told. Henson knew that teaching isn't
- 2:13just about transferring information.
- 2:16It's about embodying values. Kids absorb what they see, not
- 2:20just what they hear. That's why Sesame Street
- 2:23featured diverse casts, address difficult topics like death and
- 2:28divorce, and modeled friendships across differences.
- 2:32The Muppets weren't just teaching letters and numbers.
- 2:35They were teaching how to be human.
- 2:38Today, remember Jim Henson's wisdom?
- 2:40Whether you're a parent, teacher, manager, or friend,
- 2:44people learn more from who you are than what you say.
- 2:49Want to teach kindness? Be kind.
- 2:53Want to encourage curiosity? Ask questions.
- 2:57Want to inspire resilience? Show how you handle setbacks.
- 3:03And maybe today, introduce a young person to Sesame Street.
- 3:08Those lessons of joy, inclusion, and learning are as needed now
- 3:12as they were in 1969. Because 56 years later, the
- 3:18street is still teaching us all about how to be better humans.
- 3:23That's going to do it. For today.
- 3:24I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 3:30tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 3:36with another daily quote.
