- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at
- 0:20fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for listening.
- 0:26Our scripture this morning comes from the book First Corinthians
- 0:32starting in chapter 12, verse one.
- 0:36Now about the gifts of the Spirit.
- 0:38Brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
- 0:43You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you
- 0:47were influenced and LED astray to mute idols.
- 0:51Therefore, I want you to know that no one who is speaking by
- 0:56the Spirit of God says Jesus be cursed, and no one can say Jesus
- 1:01is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
- 1:05There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit
- 1:08distributes them. There are different kinds of
- 1:10service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of
- 1:14working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God
- 1:18at work. Now to each one of the
- 1:21manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
- 1:25To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom
- 1:29to another, a message of knowledge by means of the same
- 1:32spirit to another faith by the same spirit to another, gifts of
- 1:38healing by that one spirit to another, miraculous powers to
- 1:43another. Prophecy to another
- 1:45distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different
- 1:49kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of
- 1:54tongues. All these are the work of 1 and
- 1:57the same Spirit, and He distributes them to each one
- 2:01just as He determines. Just as a body, though one has
- 2:06many parts, but all its many parts form 1 body, so it is with
- 2:11Christ. For we were all baptized by 1
- 2:15spirit so as to form 1 body, whether Jews or Gentiles, slave
- 2:21or free, and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
- 2:25Even so the body is not made-up of one part, but of many.
- 2:30This is the Word of God for the people of God.
- 2:33Thanks be to God, how many of you have ever had a surgical
- 2:39procedure done that left you without the use of a part of
- 2:44your body for a period of time? Anybody could be a knee
- 2:48replacement, a rotator cuff repair, cataract surgery,
- 2:52something that kept your body from performing the way it was
- 2:55meant to that that period of time, regardless of what part of
- 2:59the body it is. It's difficult, right?
- 3:02Or or maybe you haven't had the procedure yourself, but you've
- 3:05taken care of someone who had that kind of surgery.
- 3:09How many of you? Yeah.
- 3:12God bless you. It's no easy thing, right?
- 3:16It's no easy thing. Or maybe, maybe it's not a
- 3:20temporary inability to use a part of your body brought on by
- 3:24injury or surgery, but you're living with a chronic or
- 3:28permanent or progressive condition.
- 3:31There's a part of your body that has never worked the way it was
- 3:34supposed to or no longer does what you tell it to do or or
- 3:38doesn't do it without great difficulty that that is more
- 3:42difficult than most of us can imagine.
- 3:46When I had my shoulder surgery a few years ago, which is a small
- 3:50convenience right to to compared to what some of you all have
- 3:54known, but I couldn't use my right arm for multiple weeks.
- 3:58I I couldn't even support my arm myself, right?
- 4:02I had to be in a sling. I couldn't dress myself.
- 4:04I had to learn to feed myself and brush my teeth with my left
- 4:08hand. Have you ever tried brushing
- 4:10your teeth with your non dominant hand?
- 4:14Try it sometime. Just try the the reality is our
- 4:17bodies are designed to operate in certain ways, right?
- 4:21And when any part of our body is injured or incapacitated, the
- 4:25whole of our being is impacted. And the same is true in Christ
- 4:30body. That's, that's the church,
- 4:33right? Paul tells us that the church is
- 4:35like a human body and, and each person who's part of the church
- 4:38is like a different part of the body.
- 4:40And as a different part of the body, each person has a
- 4:43different role to play within the body of Christ.
- 4:47A hand is not an ear, an ear is not a knee, a knee is not a
- 4:52mouth. And on and on and on it goes,
- 4:53right? To fulfil those roles we've been
- 4:56given in the body effectively, God has given each person, each
- 5:02believer, spiritual gifts. These gifts are our key to our
- 5:07being able to effectively play our role in the body of Christ.
- 5:12You may have heard about spiritual gifts at some point in
- 5:16the past. Maybe you have a pretty good
- 5:18sense of what your spiritual gifts are.
- 5:21Maybe you've taken one of those spiritual gift tests at some
- 5:24point. Anybody take one of those?
- 5:26You answer 100 or 200 questions and tally up the answers and see
- 5:30where your scores are the highest.
- 5:32And with the assumption being that if you score high in an
- 5:36area, that's your spiritual gift.
- 5:38We'll, we'll get to that later. But maybe that was the end of
- 5:43the conversation, right? You felt like someone said here,
- 5:46let's find out what your spiritual gifts are, but you
- 5:48weren't really told what it means, how to use those gifts,
- 5:52how you grow in those gifts, where you learn more about them.
- 5:57I mentioned last week that it's through spiritual gifts that we
- 6:01are empowered by the Spirit to build up the church, to serve
- 6:08and to witness to the world. We talked about how Jesus
- 6:12ministered from his spiritual gifts, right?
- 6:14And how this is key to who God is calling us to be in this
- 6:18season of our life together as the body of Christ.
- 6:22But what are spiritual gifts? That's a fair question and when
- 6:29I hope to begin answering today. OK, so here's my definition of
- 6:36spiritual gifts based on everything I've read and I've
- 6:39studied. Spiritual gifts are distinct
- 6:43abilities empowered by the Holy Spirit and distributed by God's
- 6:49grace to every believer that they might faithfully and
- 6:53effectively strengthen the church, serve others, and
- 6:57advance God's purposes. Got that memorized?
- 7:02Good. No, let me read it again.
- 7:03For us, spiritual gifts are distinct abilities empowered by
- 7:07the Holy Spirit and distributed by God's grace to every believer
- 7:12that they might faithfully and effectively strengthen the
- 7:15church, serve others, and advance God's purposes.
- 7:20There's a lot in there, right? So we're going to walk through
- 7:23that definition and talk about what it means, but but also so
- 7:26we can see how this definition relates to what Paul was
- 7:29teaching the Corinthian church. That passage which guides our
- 7:34conversation about spiritual gifts today.
- 7:38Because one of the things we have to be careful of in our
- 7:41conversation about gifts of the Spirit today is that there's
- 7:44only a few places in Scripture where they're discussed, where
- 7:49they're talked about. There's There's no fully fleshed
- 7:52out dissertation on spiritual gifts in the Bible, what they
- 7:56are, how they should be defined, how they should be used.
- 8:00But there are a few passages that kind of build some guard
- 8:04rails for us that we want to make sure we stay within in our
- 8:09conversation about being empowered by the Spirit.
- 8:12So First Corinthians 12, the passage we read from verses 1 to
- 8:1614 this morning, it's one of those places.
- 8:19It's one of those places, I'd say probably actually the
- 8:22primary place where our discussion of spiritual gifts
- 8:28happen. So we're going to begin our
- 8:29discussion there. OK, so, so spiritual gifts, our
- 8:33distinct abilities empowered by the Holy Spirit.
- 8:38And so first Corinthians puts it this way in verses 4 to 6,
- 8:43right? There are different kinds of
- 8:45gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
- 8:47There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
- 8:51There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and
- 8:54in everyone, it is the same God at work.
- 8:59Even though all the gifts have their source in the same Spirit,
- 9:03they're still distinct different gifts.
- 9:07I have different gifts than Meg has.
- 9:10I have different gifts than Jeremy has.
- 9:14It doesn't mean all of my gifts are spiritual gifts, right?
- 9:18But there are different gifts that God gives to different
- 9:21people. It's it's the Spirit who
- 9:23empowers those people. It's not that He gives the gifts
- 9:27and then we step into our own power to operate out of them.
- 9:31It's the Spirit working in US. And those spirits are
- 9:36distributed by God's grace to every believer.
- 9:45Again in First Corinthians in verse 11, this time it says all
- 9:50of these are the work of the one and the same Spirit, and He
- 9:54distributes to each one just as He determines.
- 10:00We don't choose what gifts were given.
- 10:04While I I do believe we can ask God for a gift, it's not like we
- 10:08go to God with a wish list of which gifts we want and wait for
- 10:12Him to give them to us. God decides what our gifts are
- 10:17and He decides based on how He wants to use us within His body.
- 10:23No one's exempt. We all.
- 10:26If we follow Jesus, we all get at least one gift and He, He
- 10:30distributes them to each of us. Again, that doesn't mean we all
- 10:33get the same gift, or that we get the same gift, or that the
- 10:36same gift we get will look identical in different people's
- 10:40lives. But part of the difference is
- 10:43even for people with the same gift, God may not give the same
- 10:46level of anointing of that gift in each person, right?
- 10:50That's part of what it means that they're distributed by God
- 10:53according to his grace. Finally, in in our walkthrough
- 10:59of this definition, the gifts are given so that we might
- 11:03faithfully and effectively strengthen the church, serve
- 11:07others, and advance God's purposes.
- 11:10First Corinthians 12 verse 7 says now to each one the
- 11:15manifestation of the Spirit is given.
- 11:17Why? So I feel better about myself?
- 11:20So I can do some cool things? No, for the common good.
- 11:25Or, as Ephesians 4 puts it, so the body of Christ might be
- 11:29built up. That means strengthening the
- 11:32church. It happens as we serve others,
- 11:35and it happens so that we can advance God's work and God's
- 11:38plan in the world. It happens through us, through
- 11:43God's people. But it all happens by the
- 11:45Spirit's power. You with me, half of you are not
- 11:54all right now. So to help us here, right?
- 11:57There's a lot going on here. But to help us parse out what
- 12:00the spiritual gifts are, I want to take a few minutes to talk
- 12:03about what the spiritual gifts are not because I think it can
- 12:07be easy sometimes to confuse them with other things.
- 12:10We might have heard teaching about it in a, in a different
- 12:13church, different framework, different theology, all that
- 12:16kind of stuff. So it can be easy to confuse
- 12:20them with different things, not intentionally, but because there
- 12:23is some overlap between these things.
- 12:25So we want to be clear. So I'm going to give you 6
- 12:28things that spiritual gifts are not, right?
- 12:32And if you're taking notes, here's where your little lines
- 12:35go #1 spiritual gifts are not the same as our natural talents,
- 12:46right? Natural talents are the things
- 12:49that we're born with, the gifts we have from the time we're
- 12:53born. Maybe things we pass down from
- 12:55parent to child, things like athleticism, musical ability,
- 13:01artistic creativity. These are still given by God who
- 13:07created us, but it's different from a spiritual gift.
- 13:11They're given from birth, while spiritual gifts are given at or
- 13:15after conversion. God still uses our natural
- 13:19talents and abilities, but but they're not the guaranteed place
- 13:22of power from the Holy Spirit the the empowerment that
- 13:28spiritual gifts have behind them.
- 13:31OK, so we've got natural talents.
- 13:33They're not spiritual gifts. Similarly #2 spiritual gifts are
- 13:37not our acquired skills, right? You may have learned how to
- 13:43share your faith with people at some point, right?
- 13:46Maybe work through a tract or something like that.
- 13:49The Romans row, the four spiritual laws, those kind of
- 13:52things. But just because you've learned
- 13:54to share your faith with someone doesn't mean you have the gift
- 13:58of evangelism, right? Or you may have gone to school
- 14:01and and learned how to be a teacher.
- 14:04That doesn't mean you have the gift of teaching, right?
- 14:07It's something you've learned. So while we will grow in our
- 14:13ability to exercise our spiritual gifts there, there's
- 14:17there's a supernatural empowerment behind them that has
- 14:21nothing to do with our acquired skills and the things we've
- 14:24learned how to do in life. OK, number three, third thing,
- 14:30spiritual gifts are not our personality, right?
- 14:35And in fact, I, I think it's very important that we divorce
- 14:40our personality from our giftings, right?
- 14:43We can't assume that our spiritual gifts are just the
- 14:46outgrowth of the personalities that we have.
- 14:49For instance, you might assume that your pastor, who is
- 14:53constantly up in front of people, constantly talking to
- 14:56people on Sunday morning, stands up here on the platform with
- 15:00every eye on him. Well, most eyes on him.
- 15:06You'd probably assume that naturally I'm an extrovert,
- 15:10right? Someone who draws energy from
- 15:13being with people and gets excited about being with other
- 15:18people. And that couldn't be further
- 15:19from the truth. Friends, God has given me a gift
- 15:25of teaching. He never made me an extrovert.
- 15:30I have to go home most Sundays and take a long hard nap after
- 15:35being with you all. It's nothing personal.
- 15:37That's just how God made it's me, not you.
- 15:40Right. Spiritual gifts aren't our
- 15:44personalities, and they're not tied to our personality.
- 15:47The Holy Spirit isn't limited by our personality and the gifts
- 15:52that He gives to us just might look different depending on who
- 15:57He gives which gifts to. Spiritual gifts are not our
- 16:02personality #4 spiritual gifts are also not spiritual fruit.
- 16:10You might say, OK, Pastor Scott, tell, tell me what you mean by
- 16:14that. Well, what I mean is our
- 16:16spiritual gifts are not the fruit of our formation or our
- 16:22intimacy with God, OK? Spiritual gifts are sovereignly
- 16:28given by God. Spiritual fruit or the fruit of
- 16:32the Spirit, we might be more familiar saying, is the
- 16:36character that God forms in US right primarily as we engage
- 16:40him, encounter him through the spiritual practices where we
- 16:44encounter God. But but those that character
- 16:49that grows in US is not the same as the gifts God gives us.
- 16:53And we we hurt people when because we're seeing things
- 16:57through our own lens and our own giftings.
- 17:00We promise them maybe, for instance, that that their faith
- 17:04will grow like ours if they just spend more time reading the
- 17:07Bible. Well, maybe, but maybe you've
- 17:11got the gift of faith and they don't, right.
- 17:14And promises like that just build them up to, for
- 17:17disappointment because they never quite get to that place
- 17:19where where they think they should have the faith that
- 17:23they've seen in you. So we have to be careful to, to,
- 17:27to recognize that the spiritual gifts God gives aren't
- 17:30necessarily the outflow of his formation in us.
- 17:36We can talk about that more later.
- 17:38But #5 I said that spiritual gifts aren't the, the spiritual
- 17:43growth, spiritual fruit that grows out of our spiritual
- 17:47practices, but they're also not those spiritual practices
- 17:50themselves, right? Sometimes there's overlap.
- 17:55For instance, all of us are called to pray for others,
- 17:58right? All of us are called to pray for
- 18:03others, right? Right.
- 18:06Amen, Pastor. Yes.
- 18:10But some people are given a special spiritual gift of
- 18:14intercession for them. Praying for people just seems to
- 18:18come naturally, right? Someone with the gift of
- 18:21intercession might might love to take the bulletin home each
- 18:24week. And that list of people on the
- 18:27back, they just love to pray week by week.
- 18:30For those people on the back of the bulletin, that gift might
- 18:34look a little different, right? They might just feel like God's
- 18:40given them a burden to pray for a people or a person or a
- 18:44ministry, and they just can't let go of that burden to pray
- 18:48for that group. That's that's a gift of
- 18:50intercession. I don't have that.
- 18:53I pray for the list on the back here.
- 18:55But for me, it's a discipline, right?
- 18:58It's a spiritual practice. It's something I commit myself
- 19:01to, but it doesn't come easy. Similarly, all of us are called
- 19:08to give to the work of God, right?
- 19:13Right. We're all called to give to the
- 19:15work of God. Some are gifted with generosity,
- 19:21a spiritual gift of generosity, not just a natural gift, but
- 19:23spiritual gift of generosity. And they give not because it's
- 19:27the expectation that they'll give, but actually it brings
- 19:30them great joy. They get excited about what
- 19:34God's doing and how they can partner with what God's doing in
- 19:38different places, different ministries, different things.
- 19:41If that's you with the gift of generosity today, I'll introduce
- 19:45you to my friend Kenny after the service, right?
- 19:52Spiritual gifts are not the same as our spiritual practices.
- 19:57I got to keep moving. Number six, last one, even
- 20:00though we're only halfway down the first page of notes.
- 20:03Number six, spiritual gifts are not synonymous with ministry
- 20:07offices, right? Some people take the five gifts
- 20:09that are given in a place like Ephesians 4.
- 20:13There it says God gave or Jesus gave the apostles, prophets,
- 20:17evangelist, teachers and shepherds, and they want to say
- 20:20that those are offices within the church that God gives
- 20:23positions of ministry. But I lean towards them being
- 20:27gifts that God gives. Paul says they're given to the
- 20:29church to build up the church to equip the believers for the work
- 20:32of ministry. And I think that sounds a lot
- 20:36like how he talks about the spiritual gifts here in First
- 20:39Corinthians chapter 12 and in Romans and in other places.
- 20:44So while there are and have been offices within the church like
- 20:48pastor or apostle, you can have the gift of shepherding or
- 20:54pastoring and not be a pastor, right?
- 20:58Or you can even be in the role of pastor and not have the gift
- 21:02of shepherding. All right.
- 21:05Are you with me? Yes.
- 21:07OK. That's what spiritual gifts are.
- 21:09That's what they're not. You might still be asking
- 21:12though. But Pastor, you've all this talk
- 21:14about spiritual, what are the gifts, right?
- 21:18We understand the definition of a spiritual gift, but what are
- 21:22the gifts, the distinct abilities that God gives to
- 21:26different people? And I'm going to move quickly
- 21:28here because of time, but it's important enough that we're
- 21:31going to take the time. OK, so here we go because I
- 21:34think it'll help our following conversations to list them.
- 21:38We're not going to get into all the details of them today.
- 21:41That's for later this summer, but I want to introduce them to
- 21:44you this morning. And I believe that there are at
- 21:48least 22 spiritual gifts that are talked about in the New
- 21:52Testament. I like how Robert Clinton kind
- 21:57of groups them into three different categories.
- 22:01The first group of spiritual gifts are the love gifts.
- 22:06These are the gifts that God gives to people to manifest the
- 22:10love of God in practical ways, hands and feet of Jesus kind of
- 22:17ways. These are these gifts are are
- 22:19the key to healthy ministry within any local church.
- 22:24The love gifts are are administration, celibacy,
- 22:28giving, helps and hospitality, martyrdom and mercy.
- 22:33The the love gifts are the gifts we often have in mind when we
- 22:38want to say, you know, let's go be the hands and feet of Jesus
- 22:43in our community. John Thompson says this about
- 22:45the love gifts. He says they're all powerful
- 22:49spiritual gifts that allow believers to express their love
- 22:53for God and for others in practical and sometimes
- 22:57overlooked ways. They may not be the big flashy
- 23:05spiritual gifts, but these are indispensable spiritual gifts,
- 23:10even if they don't seem quite as supernatural as the gifts like
- 23:14healing and miracles. All right, let's keep going.
- 23:18Next, the word gifts. The word gifts clarify the
- 23:22nature, action, and purposes of God.
- 23:26This is where churches that identify as more evangelical or
- 23:30Bible based like ours, we tend to think of spiritual gifts as
- 23:34happening, right? These gifts focus on using words
- 23:38and communication to share God's messages.
- 23:40The word gifts are apostleship, encouragement and exhortation,
- 23:45evangelism, leadership, shepherding, and teaching.
- 23:51I think we I think we have a grasp on those.
- 23:54Finally, the the power gifts, the last group, they demonstrate
- 23:58the power, the presence and reality of God.
- 24:03These are the spiritual gifts that that may start to make us
- 24:06feel a little uncomfortable, or you might even be sitting there
- 24:10thinking, Oh no, are we going to become one of those kinds of
- 24:14churches? I don't know about you, but when
- 24:22I read the Bible, it's kind of weird, right?
- 24:28I think if we're able to to bring some of the early
- 24:31Christians to the American church today, they'd say, you
- 24:36guys are really why aren't you doing any of the things right?
- 24:42Because because all through Scripture we see God empowering
- 24:46people through the Holy Spirit. So here are the power gifts,
- 24:48discerning of spirits, faith, healing, intercession,
- 24:53interpreting tongues, miracles, prophecy, speaking in tongues,
- 24:58words of knowledge, words of wisdom.
- 25:01These are gifts that demonstrate the power, the presence, the
- 25:06reality of God in the world today, operating in ways we
- 25:12might not imagine. And we may be more comfortable
- 25:18with one or two of these categories or gifts, right?
- 25:22Most churches are, but the spiritual gifts are like a three
- 25:28legged stool and each category is like one of those legs of the
- 25:33stool. You can't remove any category of
- 25:36gifts or else what happens? The stool tips over, right?
- 25:42The body's weaker when we try to balance all the weight of the
- 25:46ministry of the church on one leg until we end up with social
- 25:51justice churches and the crazy experience driven charismatic
- 25:56churches and the dry, unloving Bible churches.
- 26:04To be the church God needs us to be today, we've got to find the
- 26:10balance of love gifts, word gifts, power gifts.
- 26:16Each one given by the Holy Spirit, each one given for the
- 26:20purpose of advancing God's Kingdom in the world.
- 26:25We want to be a healthy body, all right.
- 26:30We want to live in the fullness of the distinct ways that God
- 26:34has gifted us to be and do ministry so the church can be
- 26:41strengthened, so people can be served, so God's purposes can
- 26:46advance in the world around us. So here's my question for you as
- 26:56we wrap up. Are you willing to get a little
- 27:03uncomfortable? Are you willing to open yourself
- 27:07up to whatever God might want to say or do or give for the sake
- 27:14of what He wants to do in the world?
- 27:16Are you willing to give grace to the people around you as God
- 27:20reveals to them the gifts He has for them?
- 27:26Might take some practice. There might be some mistakes
- 27:29along the way. Would you pray with me this
- 27:36morning? Jesus?
- 27:41We are so grateful that you not only reconciled us to God, but
- 27:48you brought us into your very body, and you have purposes that
- 27:54you want to accomplish in and through us that that you've
- 27:59chosen to work in the world through your body, the church,
- 28:05and Jesus. We don't necessarily understand
- 28:08all of this. Some of this today might feel
- 28:13new, might feel uncomfortable, but Jesus, we're trusting that
- 28:18if you said it in your word, it's still true today.
- 28:25And so we asked, would you help us?
- 28:30Would you give us an openness to what you have done, what you are
- 28:34doing, what you want to do? Would you give us an openness to
- 28:39whatever gifts you want to give us or you already have given us?
- 28:48So Jesus, we give you ourselves this morning.
- 28:52We pray that you'd give us some clarity.
- 28:57Reveal to us how you designed us, how you gifted us to be part
- 29:03of your body, operating in a healthy way in the world.
- 29:09We love you and we give you ourselves this morning.
- 29:11We prayed in Jesus name, Amen.
