- 0:00Welcome everyone to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:02I'm Ryan Mohammed, writer and moderator of Becker's
- 0:05Healthcare. And I'm thrilled to have with me
- 0:07today,
- 0:08Maura Nazario,
- 0:09vice president and chief nursing officer at Home
- 0:12Based Services and Hospital at Home and Hospice
- 0:15at AdventHealth.
- 0:16Maura, welcome to the podcast. We're very excited
- 0:18to have you join us today. To get
- 0:20us started, would you mind please introducing yourself
- 0:22and telling us a bit about your background?
- 0:24Yes. Hi, Maura. Thank you so much for
- 0:26having us. Super excited to be here today.
- 0:28So, yes, I'm Maura Nazario, vice president and,
- 0:31chief nursing officer here at AdventHealth for the
- 0:33Hospital at Home and Home Health and Hospice
- 0:35programs.
- 0:37I am a nurse by background, of course,
- 0:40and I am newer to AdventHealth. I've been
- 0:42here approximately seven months,
- 0:45and I, prior to that, was a nurse
- 0:47administrator on the nurse executive team for the
- 0:50Mayo Clinic, where I oversaw their hospital command
- 0:53center, nursing practice transformation,
- 0:55and some virtual care and home hospital programs.
- 0:58So, I'm really excited to be here today,
- 1:02and, of course, love talking about health care
- 1:04innovation.
- 1:07Yes. Yes. Absolutely. And I was doing a
- 1:09a little bit of research on you and
- 1:10the organization earlier today,
- 1:12kinda in preparation and saw that hospital at
- 1:15home program has obviously been a really amazing,
- 1:18thing for the patients and the organization alike.
- 1:20Is that one of your top priorities for
- 1:22the rest of the year? And if you
- 1:24know if that's not, what other, areas of
- 1:26focus do you have for 2025?
- 1:29Yeah. So I would say absolutely.
- 1:32Hospital at home here at AdventHealth is is
- 1:34forefront,
- 1:35at our minds. We're we're certainly looking to
- 1:38always expand on how we deliver whole person
- 1:41care, which is,
- 1:42in essence our,
- 1:44you know, our mission here at AdventHealth to
- 1:46deliver whole person care through the healing ministry
- 1:48of Christ.
- 1:50And really the next year, I'll be looking
- 1:52to continue to drive innovation
- 1:54within care models that really align to our
- 1:57patient center outcomes and operational efficiencies.
- 2:01And so when I say that, I think,
- 2:03think right patient, right place, at the right
- 2:06time model.
- 2:07And more specifically,
- 2:09with hospital at home, I really plan to
- 2:11leverage our technology and data
- 2:13and enhance our interdisciplinary
- 2:16collaboration
- 2:17and provide that holistic care model, really in
- 2:20theory putting that patient back in the driver's
- 2:23seat, having them drive their care plan, and
- 2:26really give them some sense of autonomy back.
- 2:29And also, you know, part of that goal
- 2:32is really reducing the variability in treatments,
- 2:35and still focusing on those patients' individualized needs
- 2:39and increasing the quality outcomes. There's a significant
- 2:42amount of studies that are out there right
- 2:44now that say patients do heal better in
- 2:47the comfort of their own home surrounded by
- 2:50their loved ones and areas that are familiar
- 2:52to them.
- 2:54And so really that is is something that
- 2:55we're thinking about.
- 2:57Certainly another focus within hospital at home and
- 3:00any virtual care models that we have here
- 3:02at AdventHealth
- 3:03will be really optimizing our logistics and supply
- 3:07chains to achieve those operational
- 3:09efficiencies,
- 3:10and using the right type of technology for
- 3:13the right program,
- 3:15but ultimately
- 3:16developing
- 3:17a data driven process,
- 3:19to capture improvement opportunities.
- 3:22And first and foremost, building that trust and
- 3:24communication with between our acute care teams
- 3:28as well as our patients.
- 3:30Yeah. Absolutely. That totally makes sense, and thank
- 3:32you so much for sharing that information.
- 3:35It it definitely makes sense that patients heal
- 3:37better when they're in the comfort of their
- 3:38own home.
- 3:39I know some areas, you know, getting to
- 3:41a hospital is troublesome for a patient.
- 3:45Is there any programs or initiatives that were
- 3:47the most needle moving for you or the
- 3:49organization,
- 3:51in last year, 2024?
- 3:54Yeah. I think, you know, when I joined
- 3:56the organization in 2024,
- 3:58so, again, newer here, but,
- 4:01really took that responsibility
- 4:02of implementing the hospital at home program, pulling
- 4:05from my previous experience
- 4:07over the greater of the last four years
- 4:09within Mayo Clinic, but also learning from others
- 4:12in the industry,
- 4:14was really to immerse myself into the organizational
- 4:17culture here at AdventHealth
- 4:19and integrate that new model of care into
- 4:21our existing operations.
- 4:23I think something that is really important that
- 4:26is not a one size fits all model.
- 4:28So what works for one organization
- 4:31may not necessarily
- 4:32work seamlessly within another.
- 4:35AdventHealth is a very large organization. We have
- 4:38a hundred thousand employees, just that in itself.
- 4:41We have about 55 hospitals,
- 4:44across approximately
- 4:45nine states. So we have a really large
- 4:48footprint. And so I had to thoughtfully think
- 4:50through what makes the most sense,
- 4:53really keeping that safety and quality at the
- 4:56forefront of everything we do with the needs
- 4:58of our patients first here.
- 5:00But so we started a little bit small
- 5:03and and we're slowly growing from there. But
- 5:06that's really so that we can understand what
- 5:08our patients, specifically at AdventHealth, are looking for.
- 5:12And then certainly from there, we will grow.
- 5:14So that's the most needle moving, I would
- 5:16say,
- 5:17is really you have to build that structure
- 5:20and really truly infrastructure
- 5:22to ensure that when you're developing these models
- 5:25that you understand
- 5:26the demographics,
- 5:28the landscape,
- 5:29and being the large vast of states and
- 5:32and,
- 5:33regions that we cover,
- 5:34that also in turn may look even a
- 5:37little bit further different within each region. So
- 5:40that's another thing that we're still currently doing
- 5:43is evaluating what makes sense within each region
- 5:46of the company.
- 5:48Got it. Yeah. Thank you so much for
- 5:50sharing that. And and, Maura, the last question
- 5:52I have for you is how are you
- 5:54thinking about growth,
- 5:56and or member experience for this year?
- 5:59Yeah. I mean, everything we do here at
- 6:01AdventHealth is really thinking about that member and
- 6:04consumer experience for our patients,
- 6:06but really the consumer overall.
- 6:09And growth has to,
- 6:10grow along with what our patients and consumers
- 6:13need,
- 6:14but also what we,
- 6:16are doing in the organization.
- 6:18So for at Hospital at Home, we're really
- 6:20looking at those economies of scale within the
- 6:22program,
- 6:24again, ensuring those operational
- 6:26efficiencies and never compromising on the quality of
- 6:29care that we provide at AdventHealth, which is
- 6:31exceptional.
- 6:33So we'll be continuously
- 6:34evaluating
- 6:35the programs as we slowly scale,
- 6:38and for the consumer experience,
- 6:41ensuring that that personalized care is aligning with
- 6:44our AdventHealth mission and values, and that we're
- 6:47creating seamless transitions for the patient
- 6:50with engagement and then education.
- 6:53And by continuously
- 6:54seeking and then evaluating
- 6:56feedback from our consumers, both internally and externally,
- 7:00it will allow us to mold those care
- 7:02models to what matters most for our consumers,
- 7:06again, which may differ a little bit within
- 7:08each region.
- 7:09And then when we think about our home
- 7:11health and hospice programs, I think that we
- 7:13are ensuring that we are placed across the
- 7:16entirety of our AdventHealth footprint
- 7:18and have a presence in every market where
- 7:21we currently exist
- 7:22and then furthermore
- 7:23plan to exist in the future. So it's
- 7:26all about growing with our consumers and growing
- 7:28within the organization
- 7:30and continuing that profound care that we are
- 7:33really proud of at this organization.
- 7:35I think that, that is one of the
- 7:38beauties of AdventHealth
- 7:39is that, you know, our mission really aligns
- 7:42with,
- 7:43meeting the needs of our communities and meeting
- 7:46those needs of our consumers.
- 7:48And, you know, over time, we've learned a
- 7:50lot throughout the pandemic and others about the
- 7:54benefits of telemedicine.
- 7:56So we're incorporating those types of models within
- 7:59our primary care models,
- 8:01also within the actual traditional brick and mortar
- 8:04as thinking about building our hospitals of the
- 8:07future and integrating all of those technologies
- 8:10and really
- 8:12focusing on that consumer feedback
- 8:14and making sure as as a consumer, it
- 8:16feels seamless. So those are some of the
- 8:19things that we're thinking about in the future.
- 8:22Perfect. Yeah. Thank you so much for sharing
- 8:24that information, and thank you so much for
- 8:26those final thoughts. It's definitely been, an informative
- 8:28discussion. So I wanna thank you so much
- 8:30for coming on Pecker's Healthcare, especially for the
- 8:32first time.
- 8:33I look forward to connecting with you again
- 8:35soon. Yes. Thank you so much again, and
- 8:38and appreciate you taking the time to learn
- 8:40more. Of course.
