- 0:19Speaker 1: Return to Glory podcast September fifteenth. Huskers are three and zero,
- 0:25Speaker 1: coming off a thirty four two three win against the
- 0:28Speaker 1: Northern Iowa Panthers. Hunters Arberniki, Austin Rose, Dakota Free Tag
- 0:34Speaker 1: all wearing red today boys Dack's wearing the new merch.
- 0:39Speaker 2: The new T shirt.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Representing there's a lot of people asked me about it
- 0:47Speaker 3: last night when I had.
- 0:47Speaker 2: It on We're Promotion.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I mean I might have brought it.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Up, but.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Dak you might just earn a promotion on this podcast
- 0:58Speaker 1: now that you're officially a Husker fan over an Oklahoma fan.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Uh, that's right here.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yeah, he set me one.
- 1:08Speaker 1: If if you haven't listened to it, it's worth a listen,
- 1:11Speaker 1: go back and listen to our tailgate pod from Saturday.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Got got daft pretty good, And let's just say he
- 1:19Speaker 1: knows more players on the Nebraska than he does for
- 1:24Speaker 1: his so claimed sooners.
- 1:28Speaker 3: That probably went exactly how you thought it was gonna go.
- 1:31Speaker 1: No, you actually did worse than I thought you would do, like,
- 1:35Speaker 1: like better on the Nebraska side and worse on the
- 1:37Speaker 1: Ou side. I was predicting it to be like close
- 1:40Speaker 1: it It wasn't it. And your first OU player was
- 1:47Speaker 1: Kasey Thompson.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Did I did that on purpose?
- 1:51Speaker 1: And then you also thought Jason Tatum played for Oklahoma,
- 1:54Speaker 1: so that was also good.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Taylor Tatum's Jason Tatum, same thing saying it's a better player.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Well, we're three and oh for the first time since
- 2:06Speaker 1: twenty sixteen. Twenty sixteen.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Uh, if you're in college, Mike Riley.
- 2:12Speaker 2: It's a weird feeling.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I talk to people afterwards, like, we don't really know
- 2:18Speaker 1: how to react right now. I mean, obviously we're rated.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Illinois ratings just came out as rated as well. It'll
- 2:24Speaker 1: be the first ranked, first ranked matchup in Memorials Stadium
- 2:27Speaker 1: and quite some time. The final score, I mean, I
- 2:31Speaker 1: think speaks for itself in this game, thirty four to three.
- 2:34Speaker 1: For these recap episodes, as a reminder, we'll just go
- 2:38Speaker 1: through some key headlines and some key talking points. But like,
- 2:42Speaker 1: my biggest thing watching this game and then hearing fans
- 2:48Speaker 1: around me talk and have some of the moans here
- 2:52Speaker 1: or there, and then after the game, you know, the
- 2:58Speaker 1: score was what it was. I'm just like, who really cares?
- 3:02Speaker 1: Like that was a game that like, yeah, we won.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I really am not going to read into too much here. Yes,
- 3:11Speaker 1: we could probably nitpick a billion things, and I'm sure
- 3:13Speaker 1: a lot of people are like, that's what we do,
- 3:15Speaker 1: that's what we're good at. We probably will still end
- 3:18Speaker 1: up doing that, but it is one of those things
- 3:22Speaker 1: that I just don't care, Like, let's move on, let's
- 3:24Speaker 1: get to big ten play. I think we were better
- 3:27Speaker 1: than this team, and we knew going into it, and
- 3:29Speaker 1: there were some good, there were some bad and everything
- 3:32Speaker 1: in between, but we did what we needed to do
- 3:35Speaker 1: to beat an FCS team. I think it was our
- 3:37Speaker 1: fifteenth all time win against fcsponentes fifteen and zero. So yeah,
- 3:44Speaker 1: like that high level thoughts, that's where my head's at.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I agree, like I have.
- 3:49Speaker 5: I obviously watching the game when you're like, oh my gosh,
- 3:54Speaker 5: what are you guys doing, that's a totally different energy
- 3:56Speaker 5: than after the game because in the game we could
- 3:59Speaker 5: just it's just you can imagine, you can see it, like, oh, Northern,
- 4:03Speaker 5: you'll always gonna score a touchdown here, and all of
- 4:05Speaker 5: a sudden it's seven to seven, and.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Those goes to the past kind of creep up on you.
- 4:10Speaker 5: But yeah, people are gonna complain about, oh, they look
- 4:13Speaker 5: more physical and better, but then you look at the
- 4:16Speaker 5: main point to the score bards, like they only score
- 4:17Speaker 5: three points, Like that's not sure. They might have moved
- 4:21Speaker 5: the ball between the twenties, but they only scored three dak.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Let me ask you, this is Northern Iowa better than you.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Depth Ooh, yes, I would say, yeah. They It wasn't
- 4:41Speaker 3: like they moved the ball up now on you, but
- 4:42Speaker 3: they they actually could get some momentum in the run
- 4:47Speaker 3: game and stuff. You tip can do anything. I mean,
- 4:51Speaker 3: both of them have a shet quarterback, so it's just
- 4:53Speaker 3: a wash there. But I think Nord and Ioa can
- 4:55Speaker 3: run the ball better.
- 4:57Speaker 1: But to that point, I was actually somewhat impressed by
- 5:02Speaker 1: Aiden Done. I mean, his stats weren't great, but I
- 5:06Speaker 1: just thought he I thought he managed the game well.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Obviously a couple of picks were not great throws, but
- 5:13Speaker 1: I thought he for an FCS quarterback, like did a
- 5:15Speaker 1: great job of managing the game. And he's got some
- 5:16Speaker 1: legs under him. I thought he made a lot of
- 5:19Speaker 1: correct reads. They ran a lot a.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Lot more zone read than I thought they were going to.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I didn't watch any film on him, but I thought
- 5:26Speaker 1: they were going to be maybe a little more of
- 5:28Speaker 1: a power run, but they were still they were still shotgun,
- 5:32Speaker 1: but it was it was still heavy, heavy inside run,
- 5:36Speaker 1: which I think is a good prep as we head
- 5:38Speaker 1: into big ten play.
- 5:41Speaker 3: At any point during the game where you guys worry
- 5:42Speaker 3: you're gonna lose, no.
- 5:44Speaker 5: Though, I mean that first drive I had, like I said,
- 5:47Speaker 5: those ghosts of like that, that anxiety of like, oh
- 5:50Speaker 5: my gosh, it's gonna be a seven to seven game.
- 5:52Speaker 5: After they had a ten minute drive and they were
- 5:54Speaker 5: down on the five yard line and it's like, oh boy,
- 5:57Speaker 5: that's not how you wanted to go. Where they shortened
- 5:59Speaker 5: the game up a little bit, it a little mentum example,
- 6:01Speaker 5: a little bit of the energy out of the stadium.
- 6:03Speaker 4: But I wasn't worrying about losing.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Yeah, that wasn't That wasn't a game you hang up
- 6:09Speaker 3: in the raptors. But I mean, you gotta win. You
- 6:11Speaker 3: gotta And you wonder if they just played at Vanilla
- 6:14Speaker 3: because you're going to big templay. You don't want to
- 6:16Speaker 3: give away all your you got.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Yeah, like I said, I really don't. I mean I
- 6:21Speaker 2: don't really care.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Like thirty four to three, like great, the.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Whole four quarter of second stringers for the most part.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I didn't have many expectations I guess going into it
- 6:34Speaker 1: being about any different than that, like rule, as we
- 6:37Speaker 1: talked about, is not the type of coach to go
- 6:39Speaker 1: out and we thought maybe we'd let Dylan Ryl, he'd
- 6:42Speaker 1: let Dylan Royol and just go a little bit. But
- 6:45Speaker 1: it just came, you know, we did a little bit.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I guess we threw it maybe a little more in
- 6:49Speaker 1: our run. Game was a little bit stifled at times,
- 6:53Speaker 1: but like for the most part, it was about what
- 6:58Speaker 1: we expected from an overall game. The only thing that
- 7:01Speaker 1: really caught me off guard, and this is leading into
- 7:03Speaker 1: my first headline topic is and it's more of a
- 7:08Speaker 1: shout out to you and I in their game plan,
- 7:11Speaker 1: but the time of possession. Yeah, it just felt like
- 7:17Speaker 1: they had the ball and they did for so long.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I believe it finished like thirty eight to twenty one
- 7:22Speaker 1: or something like that is very close to that. Yep,
- 7:25Speaker 1: it did, and that props to them. And sometimes you say, okay,
- 7:30Speaker 1: well that means they must you know, have controlled the
- 7:32Speaker 1: game kind of. I mean, they did get some first downs,
- 7:35Speaker 1: but it didn't have a resultant points.
- 7:38Speaker 5: They ran the ball really well between the twenties and
- 7:41Speaker 5: rule sen and his conference. He's like, hey, that's a
- 7:43Speaker 5: veteran head coach over there. He knows exactly when you
- 7:46Speaker 5: go in and play a better opponent, you don't want
- 7:48Speaker 5: them to have the ball. Like our offense first three
- 7:51Speaker 5: drives were just scoring at will, like if we keep
- 7:54Speaker 5: the ball out of their hands. They were milking the
- 7:56Speaker 5: clock all the way down to the zero every possession.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And even when they were too, like their chance of
- 8:02Speaker 1: winning that game was for us to make mistakes, right,
- 8:05Speaker 1: And he thought their coach thought that we they could
- 8:09Speaker 1: maybe be as physical as us up front, and I
- 8:11Speaker 1: would argue that maybe they did at some point, but
- 8:15Speaker 1: they did. They just they even when they were down
- 8:17Speaker 1: twenty four to three, they ran the clock down inside
- 8:21Speaker 1: by when they were down twenty seven to three or
- 8:24Speaker 1: twenty four to three and they had a fourth and
- 8:26Speaker 1: two or fourth and three from like midfield, they're like, yah,
- 8:29Speaker 1: let's just punt it. Like they they knew that they
- 8:33Speaker 1: had to just play a very smart football game, and yeah,
- 8:37Speaker 1: it resulted in the score that it did. And speaking
- 8:41Speaker 1: of time of possession, then you you know, are offense
- 8:43Speaker 1: when they put up thirty thirty eight against Northern iowall, Well,
- 8:48Speaker 1: guess what.
- 8:48Speaker 2: We didn't punt one time. We were efficient.
- 8:51Speaker 1: When we had the ball. Did we have big plays?
- 8:54Speaker 1: We had a couple. We had two drives that didn't
- 8:57Speaker 1: result in points, the interception and then the fourth go
- 9:03Speaker 1: for it down, So like, yeah, I guess the one
- 9:07Speaker 1: frustrating in the second half was.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Not scoring when we were at first and goal there.
- 9:13Speaker 1: But for the most part, like we were efficient on
- 9:16Speaker 1: offense and again did what we needed to do. That
- 9:19Speaker 1: score does not a score was exactly how the game
- 9:21Speaker 1: went and how expected it to go with the veteran
- 9:24Speaker 1: coach on the other side that controlled the game.
- 9:28Speaker 5: I mean, you know, people are gonna complain about the defense,
- 9:31Speaker 5: but penalty wise, we were much cleaner than we were
- 9:33Speaker 5: last week.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Only four penalties for forty seven yards.
- 9:38Speaker 5: You know, people are gonna gripe about the second half
- 9:41Speaker 5: last week and be like, oh my gosh, I had
- 9:43Speaker 5: so many penalties the most game we had one third
- 9:45Speaker 5: as many penalties.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Didn't hear you want to say anything about that?
- 9:50Speaker 2: Nope, Dak, where do you want to go?
- 9:54Speaker 4: Take us?
- 9:54Speaker 2: The headline? Number two, Well.
- 9:59Speaker 3: I guess my my first one was about playing Vanilla.
- 10:05Speaker 3: That game I did you do you guys think that
- 10:07Speaker 3: they didn't show anything basically the Huskers and they just
- 10:11Speaker 3: played at Vanilla and tried to get out of there
- 10:12Speaker 3: with the Wayne.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 5: And then I think a lot of they had a
- 10:16Speaker 5: lot more rotation guys.
- 10:18Speaker 4: In this game than they did last game.
- 10:19Speaker 5: Yeah, just like the even at the beginning of the game,
- 10:22Speaker 5: not even talking fourth quarter, like it was like, oh,
- 10:25Speaker 5: he's already in the game kind of things like ty
- 10:28Speaker 5: Robinson's not in there and Ash isn't in there right now.
- 10:31Speaker 5: I think that was probably part of the rest from
- 10:34Speaker 5: last week because they had a short week coming up
- 10:35Speaker 5: against Illinois. And then the other part is just getting
- 10:38Speaker 5: reps against a team that you believed to be a
- 10:41Speaker 5: lower talent level.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Here's my take on this.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I think every coach has a good idea at any
- 10:52Speaker 1: sport when you're playing a team that you're gonna beat
- 10:55Speaker 1: ninety nine out of one hundred times, if not one
- 10:57Speaker 1: hundred out of one hundred times. I think real knew that,
- 11:02Speaker 1: and after watching film, not saying that you're going to
- 11:05Speaker 1: publicly ever say that. You're never going to tell your
- 11:07Speaker 1: players that, but as a coaching staff, like you talk
- 11:11Speaker 1: about it like this is a team that we will win,
- 11:14Speaker 1: Like we would have to have our whole team get
- 11:17Speaker 1: hurt for and have to forfeit before we lose a
- 11:20Speaker 1: game like this. I think real knew that without saying it,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and I do think that then leads to maybe the
- 11:28Speaker 1: more vanilla play or playing a lot of guys like
- 11:32Speaker 1: you want to keep guys that maybe aren't getting a
- 11:36Speaker 1: lot of snaps in the bigger games. You want to
- 11:39Speaker 1: give them their opportunity now and give them a chance
- 11:42Speaker 1: to make a play. I mean, look at guys, look
- 11:45Speaker 1: at our receiving stats. I think we had fifteen guys
- 11:48Speaker 1: caught to pass this week. Yeah, like we made it
- 11:53Speaker 1: a point to get the ball to a lot of
- 11:55Speaker 1: people just to please.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Players and families and whatnot.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Now, I don't know if that's right or wrong, but
- 12:01Speaker 1: in a game like that, like, I think you have
- 12:03Speaker 1: the ability to do that.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Now.
- 12:05Speaker 1: As far as keeping at vanilla dack, I actually think
- 12:09Speaker 1: rule was very strategic and I think schematically they had
- 12:13Speaker 1: a lot of stuff put in this week to get
- 12:17Speaker 1: other people to watch and wonder, okay, will they run
- 12:20Speaker 1: that against us. A couple of examples the obvious one
- 12:24Speaker 1: Harber got in and played snaps at quarterback, running back, fullback,
- 12:29Speaker 1: receiver like the full Taysom Hill packages.
- 12:32Speaker 2: I'm wearing my Saints hat here.
- 12:34Speaker 1: He got what we thought we could see at some
- 12:37Speaker 1: point this year from him, and now it's all on film,
- 12:42Speaker 1: So I don't know how much teams are really going
- 12:46Speaker 1: to read into that and watch it, but you know
- 12:47Speaker 1: it's out there. A couple of other just like small
- 12:49Speaker 1: things that we did that at the time, we're like, ooh,
- 12:51Speaker 1: that was probably not a great play call. Was one
- 12:54Speaker 1: the Dylan Royola naked boot. Like again, I think that
- 12:58Speaker 1: might have been first or second and goal that time
- 13:00Speaker 1: from the two or three. But by doing that, and
- 13:03Speaker 1: even though we lost a couple of yards on it,
- 13:05Speaker 1: now teams know that d n or linebacker whatever responsible
- 13:09Speaker 1: for contain like you cannot bite down, and teams will
- 13:13Speaker 1: be coached now in the future.
- 13:16Speaker 2: To make sure that we don't nake a boot out
- 13:18Speaker 2: of it.
- 13:18Speaker 1: And all that does is now tells us as a
- 13:21Speaker 1: coaching staff saying, Okay, they're gonna have a guy covering that,
- 13:23Speaker 1: so we can now exploit it in a different way.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Like I think it's all very schematically planned on stuff
- 13:28Speaker 1: like that to get.
- 13:30Speaker 2: People to watch the film. So I don't know.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I think in a game like this, that was the
- 13:38Speaker 1: game plan, knowing that we were gonna win regardless. So
- 13:41Speaker 1: whatever we could get out there before we play a
- 13:44Speaker 1: team like even Illinois on Friday, for them to watch and.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Say, okay, that was different. That was a wrinkle.
- 13:49Speaker 1: That was interesting because our run game, I would say
- 13:53Speaker 1: it was very vanilla, but we what else did we do?
- 13:56Speaker 1: We threw reverse in there, We threw a little orbit
- 14:00Speaker 1: motion with a with a trap underneath it that didn't
- 14:03Speaker 1: go for anything, but very very strategic schemes that we
- 14:08Speaker 1: were designing for this game to I think, get it
- 14:11Speaker 1: on film.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Yeah you don't, don't go.
- 14:18Speaker 4: I'm just gonna say yeah. Like a lot of people
- 14:21Speaker 4: were involved.
- 14:24Speaker 5: It didn't feel like we had to do like on offense,
- 14:26Speaker 5: we wanted to move the ball.
- 14:27Speaker 4: We did move the ball.
- 14:28Speaker 5: It's like, oh, we need to get the first down here,
- 14:30Speaker 5: let's let's do this outside of the fourth down.
- 14:34Speaker 4: It was.
- 14:36Speaker 5: It wasn't super imposing and you and I's defense against
- 14:40Speaker 5: our offense. So a lot of people ran the ball,
- 14:43Speaker 5: a lot of people caught the ball, and we ran
- 14:45Speaker 5: it with pretty good efficiency. We had a couple of
- 14:47Speaker 5: big plays and we last couple of years, what do
- 14:49Speaker 5: we want. We want big plays. We haven't had that
- 14:51Speaker 5: in a while. We had a fifty nine yard pass
- 14:53Speaker 5: and two thirty five plus yard runs, So I think
- 14:57Speaker 5: they did what they needed to do.
- 14:58Speaker 2: It's a little tunea backtracked fact check. It was only
- 15:01Speaker 2: ten guys, not fifteen.
- 15:04Speaker 3: That's that's the kind of game where you just want
- 15:07Speaker 3: to get out of as healthy as possible and get
- 15:09Speaker 3: out of the win. That's base of all you want
- 15:11Speaker 3: to do.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Yeah, like when you hear about the press conference, like
- 15:14Speaker 5: Butler didn't play, still a little banged up from last week,
- 15:17Speaker 5: but he could have played this week if we if
- 15:19Speaker 5: we needed him too.
- 15:20Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, let's go there with our next topic
- 15:25Speaker 1: here conversation. So you mentioned Jamar Butler didn't play, more
- 15:31Speaker 1: of a game time decision, he warmed up. I agree,
- 15:36Speaker 1: he probably plays.
- 15:38Speaker 4: He probably plays opponents.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Yeah, but he was out Micah Mazuka. He was not around,
- 15:47Speaker 1: and we don't know what's going on. I don't even
- 15:49Speaker 1: think people maybe saw on the sidelines. Henry Latowski started
- 15:54Speaker 1: a right guard for us. From the get go, it
- 15:57Speaker 1: does not sound like it's injury related. It could be
- 15:59Speaker 1: something else the rumor.
- 16:03Speaker 4: I don't know if you saw this last week, but
- 16:04Speaker 4: apparently fourth quarter.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Last week he got pulled because he was playing badly
- 16:09Speaker 5: and got upset and tried to start a fight with
- 16:13Speaker 5: dom or not Dominic, but ye don Riola, and so
- 16:18Speaker 5: he got did not play this week coach's decision in
- 16:23Speaker 5: team suspension sort of thing.
- 16:25Speaker 4: But also that also does kind of line up with
- 16:27Speaker 4: what rules at.
- 16:28Speaker 5: The press conference of we're not talking about that now
- 16:30Speaker 5: he didn't play coach's decision.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Yep, Yeah, that's interesting. I don't know what we're going
- 16:38Speaker 1: to hear out of that, if any. I think he's
- 16:41Speaker 1: definitely a guy that helps us on the offensive line
- 16:44Speaker 1: and brings that nasty mentality, but yeah, you gotta somewhat
- 16:52Speaker 1: keep it under control. But for a game like that,
- 16:54Speaker 1: but even then we're playing a Big ten team or
- 16:59Speaker 1: a top twenty five team he's playing, I think, yes,
- 17:03Speaker 1: now there's a line of holding standards right in your
- 17:07Speaker 1: program and your coat and what you allow and don't allow.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Who knows how severe it was if that rumor is
- 17:12Speaker 1: true of whatever was said, but this was obviously a
- 17:16Speaker 1: game that he was not needed. But it is it's
- 17:20Speaker 1: just another interesting headline to talk about. And yeah, Makai
- 17:24Speaker 1: Bayer didn't play the first half first targeting penalty a
- 17:28Speaker 1: little concerned they were going to call that targeting there
- 17:31Speaker 1: in the second half.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Luckily they didn't.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Yeah, we played a lot of guys like that's that's
- 17:37Speaker 1: the bottom line I think when it comes to personnel,
- 17:40Speaker 1: and back to what we said at the beginning, it's
- 17:43Speaker 1: not a game that I think there's a whole lot
- 17:45Speaker 1: to nitpick about just because of who we were playing
- 17:48Speaker 1: and what the game really meant.
- 17:50Speaker 5: No, the only thing that worried you is they're moving
- 17:53Speaker 5: the ball, they're running the ball, and like if there
- 17:57Speaker 5: was a mobile quarterback.
- 17:59Speaker 4: He didn't like what you saw.
- 18:00Speaker 5: But again, like we said, it's probably a product of
- 18:03Speaker 5: we weren't as reveed up for this game. We weren't
- 18:06Speaker 5: playing all of our best players all the time, and
- 18:08Speaker 5: we might have been playing a little more conservatively on defense.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Boy on online, you think the world's ending with holy
- 18:17Speaker 3: people are freaking out.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Ranked for one week and all of a sudden, it's like,
- 18:21Speaker 5: why are we not Georgia. No, Georgia didn't look good,
- 18:23Speaker 5: but why are we not Georgia?
- 18:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, before we get back, Askars, how about that hunter?
- 18:30Speaker 3: What sac you's say Kentucky no shot?
- 18:33Speaker 2: Yeah that was wrong. But yeah, where do you want
- 18:45Speaker 2: to go next?
- 18:48Speaker 5: Well, we covered a lot of things, but uh, I'm
- 18:52Speaker 5: going to say kicking.
- 18:55Speaker 4: We hit two field goals and it was Albano. I
- 18:58Speaker 4: was wrong. I thought Hole was going to be our
- 19:01Speaker 4: kicker and he was not.
- 19:02Speaker 5: They stuck with Alvano and they put him out there
- 19:04Speaker 5: twice and for all the extra points. Oh not all
- 19:09Speaker 5: the extra points. I think Cold did get the last
- 19:11Speaker 5: that last touchdown extra point.
- 19:12Speaker 1: So it.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Was nice to see get two field goals, but I'm
- 19:20Speaker 5: I am shocked that it was not whole.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Yeah it there also were short field goals. Again, I
- 19:31Speaker 1: wanted to see the longer one.
- 19:34Speaker 4: Yeah, on.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I think it would have been about a forty four
- 19:39Speaker 1: yard or forty seven yard or maybe something like that. Yeah,
- 19:42Speaker 1: it is the longest one again this team was a
- 19:43Speaker 1: thirty one yarder, and then we had another one that
- 19:47Speaker 1: basically an extra point. It was still just one of
- 19:52Speaker 1: those question marks that we still just don't know. And yeah,
- 19:55Speaker 1: we thought maybe Hole would come in and after what
- 20:00Speaker 1: happened last week, but sticking with al Albano. I have
- 20:03Speaker 1: a feeling that this week there's gonna there's It could
- 20:07Speaker 1: come down to, you know, who can make and execute
- 20:13Speaker 1: their special teams, specifically field goals, and Illinois got a
- 20:17Speaker 1: good kicker. He made a couple I think in that
- 20:21Speaker 1: Kansas game. And I haven't watched or hurt best, what
- 20:24Speaker 1: I've been hearing is that their kicker is pretty solid,
- 20:27Speaker 1: So I think Albano's gonna need to be on this
- 20:29Speaker 1: a game. And on top of that, like our snappers,
- 20:32Speaker 1: I think, if I heard correctly, Rule said we.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Have someone different for the short one.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I think the short the field goal, and I guess
- 20:42Speaker 1: long snapper for punting.
- 20:43Speaker 2: We never punted. So that was that.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Not a lot of word for Blushini this week.
- 20:55Speaker 3: We'll talk about Wednesday, but that this Illinois game is
- 20:58Speaker 3: tougher than what we all thought coming to the here
- 21:00Speaker 3: now and with at Ving out there, you're not percent
- 21:05Speaker 3: confident still in him kicking, right, if you're changing and
- 21:12Speaker 3: it will come down to that in these Big Ten games,
- 21:17Speaker 3: But are you confident of that? No, not at all.
- 21:23Speaker 2: You're gonna start using the term we instead of you, guys.
- 21:29Speaker 1: If you fan you you proved it on Saturday.
- 21:34Speaker 2: You can't go back on that.
- 21:35Speaker 3: I'm just joking around you guys.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Hey, not only that, now we won't spoil it.
- 21:42Speaker 1: You have to listen to the end of the podcast
- 21:43Speaker 1: to make him go and listen into the tailgate pod
- 21:46Speaker 1: you were that was That was one of the better
- 21:48Speaker 1: endings we've had.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good time.
- 21:55Speaker 1: My next point I want to talk about here, and
- 21:57Speaker 1: this is just from going in person, uh, is the
- 22:01Speaker 1: excitement and engagement.
- 22:03Speaker 2: From our crowd little bit up this year this game.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Now, before the game, I thought like tailgating wise, I was, eh,
- 22:15Speaker 1: dos it seemed quite as popping, like everybody put it
- 22:17Speaker 1: all into last week and take it off.
- 22:22Speaker 2: So that might have been the case.
- 22:25Speaker 1: But the game in the atmosphere for playing an FCS
- 22:29Speaker 1: school and yeah we're two and zero and we're ranked
- 22:31Speaker 1: like that helps a lot of it. I was very
- 22:34Speaker 1: impressed one how early people were in there again, I
- 22:38Speaker 1: mean I think I was in there probably twenty twenty
- 22:40Speaker 1: five minutes and it was pretty filled already. Two the
- 22:46Speaker 1: amount of standing and just crowd volume even when we
- 22:51Speaker 1: were up twenty four to three, and people had probably
- 22:57Speaker 1: opportunities to leave if they wanted to because the game
- 22:59Speaker 1: was pretty much you knew it was gonna happen at
- 23:03Speaker 1: that point, so how long people stayed. I think that
- 23:08Speaker 1: speaks to where Husker fans are at right now, like
- 23:11Speaker 1: we are all we all missed this and we're ready
- 23:16Speaker 1: for it to just really explode and take off, and
- 23:20Speaker 1: I think we are moving in that direction. So yeah,
- 23:24Speaker 1: I just wanted to say I'm very impressed by the
- 23:26Speaker 1: crowd and getting up for a game like this and
- 23:29Speaker 1: not just you know, showing up for the first quarter.
- 23:31Speaker 1: It was for the most part, the whole game, including
- 23:35Speaker 1: all of them, up until that last drive when we
- 23:39Speaker 1: needed to get a stop to hold them out of
- 23:41Speaker 1: the end zone.
- 23:41Speaker 2: We did.
- 23:46Speaker 5: I can't speak to on TV, it sounded loud. I mean,
- 23:49Speaker 5: it's also kind of hard. Big ten does a better
- 23:51Speaker 5: job than NBC did with the noise because the NBC
- 23:54Speaker 5: you couldn't hear anything in the Colorado like the crowd
- 23:56Speaker 5: that really sounds exists. And there were some moments on
- 23:58Speaker 5: the BTM broadcast really go Okay, it sounds wild, but
- 24:02Speaker 5: I agree.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Because you want to listen to my boy cold boy,
- 24:07Speaker 4: he got hit.
- 24:07Speaker 5: Yeah, he got some rough on interviews. Hopefully is that
- 24:10Speaker 5: online too? Much because that was rough.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Yeah it was. It was a lot of what I
- 24:17Speaker 3: thought the tiki amosphere, Like you said, it was pretty dead.
- 24:20Speaker 3: I picked up towards the end, but it was a
- 24:23Speaker 3: lot of when I thought for Northern Iowa game.
- 24:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I can't speak to it. Wasn't there? How's that
- 24:33Speaker 4: a vowe? Is that a company thing?
- 24:36Speaker 2: Uh da? Any other topics things you want to hit
- 24:39Speaker 2: on before we move on?
- 24:44Speaker 3: Oh, not that I could think of. I'm that's about it.
- 24:51Speaker 3: You guys covered most of them.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Did we hit all your three to five headlines?
- 24:56Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 24:56Speaker 3: You know, we already hit most of them. I was
- 24:59Speaker 3: most of it was just a about how the game
- 25:01Speaker 3: was closer. I thought, people freaking out online and then
- 25:07Speaker 3: you going on that, what do you think about that?
- 25:09Speaker 3: People freaking out?
- 25:11Speaker 1: I get's a good topic to like. That was why
- 25:17Speaker 1: I opened with the who cares? And like, let's just
- 25:20Speaker 1: move on from this game because we've gone so quickly.
- 25:25Speaker 2: From forgetting.
- 25:28Speaker 1: That we are not a good football program in the
- 25:32Speaker 1: past ten to fifteen years.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Like it, Yeah we lose that game four years ago.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Yeah I don't we lose, but like it's much ross
- 25:43Speaker 1: is I mean, that's a twenty eight eighteen game.
- 25:45Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's not one that we did, but
- 25:49Speaker 2: we did this week.
- 25:51Speaker 1: So I just think people need to take this step back,
- 25:56Speaker 1: like this game does not that there there's so many
- 25:59Speaker 1: little things that I think the coaching staff knew that
- 26:01Speaker 1: because we were better than them, we don't need to
- 26:03Speaker 1: do this, this and this and this and this, and
- 26:05Speaker 1: we don't need to take risks here and here and here, like,
- 26:10Speaker 1: let's just win this game. And like you guys said,
- 26:13Speaker 1: stay healthy. That's the big thing in games like this.
- 26:15Speaker 1: You don't want to see a big season end ending
- 26:17Speaker 1: injury go down in a game that I'm not gonna
- 26:19Speaker 1: say it doesn't matter, but for the grand scheme of
- 26:22Speaker 1: things that it really doesn't. That's why I have them
- 26:25Speaker 1: in utep as my eleven and twelve important solely because
- 26:29Speaker 1: of the fact of we.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Were gonna win those games.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I didn't think they were going to cause problems, whereas
- 26:36Speaker 1: in the past those games were higher importance because we
- 26:39Speaker 1: didn't know if we could win them, and then we said,
- 26:41Speaker 1: if we lose these games, all hell is going to
- 26:44Speaker 1: break loose. So I think, yeah, let's not. I mean, Dak,
- 26:51Speaker 1: what was some of the bigger things you saw about concerns.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Just people are saying and oh, basically, you got to
- 27:01Speaker 3: beat that team better where you're not going to be
- 27:04Speaker 3: able to win any Big Ten games playing like that.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Basically everything like that.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Good summary.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Yeah, we didn't look like Notre Dame up there against Purdue.
- 27:17Speaker 4: I'll give you that.
- 27:19Speaker 1: And again, I will go back to the time of possession, Like,
- 27:22Speaker 1: what else did you want us to do on offense? Right, Like,
- 27:25Speaker 1: we were efficient with the possessions that we got. They
- 27:29Speaker 1: had the ball for two thirds of.
- 27:30Speaker 4: The game outside of one less turnover. That's it.
- 27:36Speaker 2: The one.
- 27:39Speaker 1: After saying all that, the one I guess somewhat concerning thing,
- 27:43Speaker 1: but I'm not reading into it and thinking anything of
- 27:45Speaker 1: it at this point is the lack of I guess
- 27:48Speaker 1: run game we were able to get, especially late in
- 27:52Speaker 1: the second half. But again, I mean, I think Northern
- 27:56Speaker 1: I was probably stacking the box because they knew that
- 27:58Speaker 1: we were going.
- 27:58Speaker 2: To run the ball. They have some big boys.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not going to say they're athletic big boys,
- 28:04Speaker 1: but they had some big boys on both the offensive
- 28:06Speaker 1: defensive lines, and you know, maybe there's a question mark
- 28:09Speaker 1: on that.
- 28:10Speaker 2: And then another one I've heard probably.
- 28:13Speaker 1: What Daka saw too, is maybe some tackling issues or
- 28:17Speaker 1: concerns against one game. If you have to say, anything
- 28:22Speaker 1: that Tony White's defenses have done in the past two
- 28:25Speaker 1: years has been rallied to the football and tackling, like
- 28:28Speaker 1: we have been very very good at that, especially compared
- 28:30Speaker 1: to previous years. We've had some very poor tackling years.
- 28:33Speaker 1: So I'm not looking at this one game and going, oh,
- 28:36Speaker 1: what was that? You know, they're a bad team. I
- 28:39Speaker 1: just think it's some different guys that we're in and
- 28:44Speaker 1: I mean both on the offensive line and defensive line
- 28:47Speaker 1: and secondary tackling. I just think there's a lot of
- 28:50Speaker 1: a lot of things that we probably will not see
- 28:53Speaker 1: against the typical Big ten team.
- 28:55Speaker 2: So I'm not reading.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Into any of the negative nitpicky criticism from this week.
- 29:02Speaker 3: I agree, Yeah, I gave norm Iwa no respect. My bad.
- 29:07Speaker 3: They're a better football team I thought.
- 29:10Speaker 2: I will. I will say these comments could change.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I mean, who knows, Like maybe in a couple of
- 29:16Speaker 1: weeks our run game may struggle against Illinois and Ruggers
- 29:21Speaker 1: and whoever else. But I think for right now, there's
- 29:24Speaker 1: no reason to panic based on what we've seen. Last thing,
- 29:29Speaker 1: we want to do here on this episode every about
- 29:32Speaker 1: three games. We'll do it about three or four times
- 29:35Speaker 1: throughout the year. We're going to re level set our expectations.
- 29:38Speaker 1: We did this last year. We talked to the beginning
- 29:41Speaker 1: of the year of where we thought we could end
- 29:43Speaker 1: up record wise ceilings scores based on our schedule, based
- 29:47Speaker 1: on you know, the status of our players, where our
- 29:49Speaker 1: team's at. I think a lot of times when you
- 29:53Speaker 1: talk about your favorite sports team, what you're doing is
- 29:56Speaker 1: your your leveling level setting it. You're you're discussing it
- 30:01Speaker 1: with how you expect the team to perform. So people
- 30:03Speaker 1: that have really really high expectations are going to usually
- 30:06Speaker 1: be a lot more critical. And sometimes your expectations can
- 30:09Speaker 1: be short term of just with really we should be
- 30:12Speaker 1: doing this week, and then they can be over four
- 30:14Speaker 1: or five years over the lifespan of the head coach.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Like I think, there's a lot of ways to look
- 30:19Speaker 1: at it, but I want us to each just talk
- 30:22Speaker 1: about where our heads out of the program in general
- 30:25Speaker 1: for this year.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I guess moving forward, where.
- 30:29Speaker 1: It's headed and kind of give a new record or
- 30:34Speaker 1: a ceiling floor type prediction at the end.
- 30:37Speaker 2: So Dak will let you start.
- 30:41Speaker 3: You got out the first three games basically how you
- 30:45Speaker 3: want to get out of them? Three oh? Now, I
- 30:49Speaker 3: think the schedule is tougher than what we expected. Rockers
- 30:52Speaker 3: looks pretty decent. Pdue Who the hell knows happened what
- 30:56Speaker 3: happened there? I don't know what happened that game. Anyway,
- 30:59Speaker 3: Illinois pretty good. I think everybody had you, guys pencil
- 31:05Speaker 3: in for sure seven to o after three oh, start
- 31:08Speaker 3: not so fast. Next next week's gonna be tough. You
- 31:11Speaker 3: play that son of a bitch Ret Blama. Tough coach.
- 31:16Speaker 3: But anyway, I I still think you go seven to
- 31:18Speaker 3: er before House State.
- 31:19Speaker 2: I don't.
- 31:21Speaker 3: I think this is about the only game you can
- 31:22Speaker 3: trip up on.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Basically, how do you see the rest of the year going,
- 31:27Speaker 1: I mean, record wise?
- 31:31Speaker 3: No, I think I can't remember what I said at
- 31:37Speaker 3: the beginning of the year. Anyway. I think you lose
- 31:40Speaker 3: a house state.
- 31:41Speaker 4: We all took the under of seven and a half.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you for sure lose the House state
- 31:47Speaker 3: and probably you lose you guys see two and then
- 31:52Speaker 3: I drop one or two in there. Probably so not
- 31:55Speaker 3: not even much different than when I had the beginning of.
- 31:57Speaker 1: The year, But it is better I mean what you
- 32:00Speaker 1: just said, I think I said.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Eight and four.
- 32:06Speaker 1: I mean you said we're gonna go seven to zero
- 32:08Speaker 1: or you thought we could, so yeah.
- 32:12Speaker 5: And then we're losing three, So that's nine. Its many
- 32:16Speaker 5: nine games. Agreed, dreaking that cool.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Down.
- 32:22Speaker 4: I kind of agree with that.
- 32:24Speaker 5: Illinois definitely looks more challenging than we expected, but also
- 32:28Speaker 5: we I guess going into the year, I thought Colorado
- 32:31Speaker 5: was gonna be more challenging than what ended up being.
- 32:34Speaker 5: Where I'm three and o's not shocking. As far as
- 32:37Speaker 5: the program goes, you feel pretty good. It seems like
- 32:39Speaker 5: everyone's bought in. Recruits are like, yeah, you can feel
- 32:42Speaker 5: the culture in this. You start to look at the
- 32:45Speaker 5: ross and you get a little bit worried about next year,
- 32:47Speaker 5: and you can just kind of feel that step back coming,
- 32:49Speaker 5: especially because I feel like we're ahead of schedule and
- 32:51Speaker 5: we have a sh ton of seniors, and when next
- 32:55Speaker 5: year hits, it's probably gonna be a tougher schedule and
- 32:57Speaker 5: we're going to lose all of our starting offensive line
- 33:00Speaker 5: and starting defensive line might sting a little.
- 33:03Speaker 4: So I think we're a head of schedule. I think
- 33:06Speaker 4: it's gonna hurt next year.
- 33:08Speaker 5: As far as the season prediction goes, I thought we
- 33:12Speaker 5: were gonna be seven to five, probably bumped that up
- 33:14Speaker 5: to eight and four.
- 33:15Speaker 4: I really think we're gonna lose four, like I.
- 33:18Speaker 5: Think I say, I think we used to lose to USC.
- 33:21Speaker 5: I think Iowa Illinois are gonna be problems. Rutgers could
- 33:24Speaker 5: be sneaky good too.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Okay, so I like the next year thought already.
- 33:31Speaker 1: My mind hasn't gone there yet, but I guess it
- 33:33Speaker 1: does play a factor. Like what I think about this year, Guys,
- 33:38Speaker 1: this might be bold of where I'm at, but after
- 33:42Speaker 1: in it was just one one game of Colorado, one
- 33:46Speaker 1: big game of us winning. I guess in combination of
- 33:51Speaker 1: just playing smarter, playing complimentary football that we keep hearing
- 33:56Speaker 1: over and over, you know, limiting our turnovers. I think
- 34:00Speaker 1: we had the one fumble and then the interception this
- 34:02Speaker 1: last week was it was what it was, Guys. I'm
- 34:09Speaker 1: gonna be disappointed for not nine to three. I have
- 34:14Speaker 1: my expectations have changed a lot after that Colorado game,
- 34:19Speaker 1: and that was one that I just I'm just like,
- 34:21Speaker 1: I don't I just need to see us perform in
- 34:24Speaker 1: a big game. I feel like the mindset of the
- 34:27Speaker 1: team is in a good place. We should beat Illinois
- 34:31Speaker 1: at home.
- 34:32Speaker 3: What'd you at the beginning of the year.
- 34:35Speaker 1: I mean, I was seven and five to I mean,
- 34:38Speaker 1: and I've talked a lot about being pessimistic, right, I'm
- 34:41Speaker 1: not saying nine to three. I mean it is an
- 34:42Speaker 1: optimistic pick, but I'm just saying from the team that
- 34:45Speaker 1: we have, and then look at our schedule. I know,
- 34:49Speaker 1: Dak what you said is one way of looking at it.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I do think Illinois maybe is a little better, but
- 34:55Speaker 1: I don't think they're far off from where I thought
- 34:56Speaker 1: they would be. I don't think Rutgers anywhere different than
- 34:59Speaker 1: I thought they would be. We get both of them
- 35:01Speaker 1: them at home. The Purdue game was a little bit scary.
- 35:05Speaker 2: On the road. They're horrible Indiana.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Indiana is the one that I'm very holding a little
- 35:12Speaker 1: bit because they looked good so far. I also don't
- 35:15Speaker 1: know if they've played anybody. I think USC has looked better.
- 35:19Speaker 1: We know what Ohio State's got, guys, Wisconsin's not good.
- 35:22Speaker 1: I don't think Iowa was very good. I think we
- 35:25Speaker 1: can win both of them. I'm not those two are.
- 35:27Speaker 1: I would say win one, lose one.
- 35:30Speaker 4: I think I feel better.
- 35:31Speaker 5: I think I agree, I feel better about our ceiling.
- 35:34Speaker 5: I feel the ten and two ceiling.
- 35:36Speaker 2: UCLA they're horrible.
- 35:39Speaker 3: So you got I don't know, you gotta feel better
- 35:43Speaker 3: about the end of your schedule now.
- 35:44Speaker 1: I don't want to call it a seal like a ceiling,
- 35:47Speaker 1: I guess, but like we have the players and I
- 35:49Speaker 1: think the mindset right now to go nine and three,
- 35:53Speaker 1: if not ten and two and a seven and five
- 35:56Speaker 1: season at this point would feel disappointing to me.
- 35:58Speaker 2: It would.
- 35:59Speaker 1: I think Illinois, or indeed I get my team's right,
- 36:03Speaker 1: U C. L A and Purdue, those are both gimme
- 36:07Speaker 1: wins now, I really do. I just i's the way
- 36:09Speaker 1: that they have looked so far. They have not been good.
- 36:16Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. But that's what I'm saying now, Austin,
- 36:18Speaker 1: I say we all are. That's that's where my mind
- 36:21Speaker 1: is flipped. Like I think that we after what we've
- 36:24Speaker 1: shown like those are gonna be close to gimme wins.
- 36:27Speaker 3: Now.
- 36:29Speaker 1: That's this might be bold for me to say that
- 36:31Speaker 1: now after I guess seeing one game, but I do.
- 36:36Speaker 1: I think that those games are wins and if they're not, like, yeah,
- 36:39Speaker 1: my heart's probably gonna be broken and then yeah, these
- 36:42Speaker 1: other home games we should win like we have the
- 36:46Speaker 1: we were healthy, pending maybe a couple of these news
- 36:51Speaker 1: announcements that we're waiting to hear. I think Riola is
- 36:54Speaker 1: everything that we were hoping for and maybe more. Remember
- 36:58Speaker 1: my prediction with him. I thought he was gonna come
- 37:00Speaker 1: out and be mister over aggressive and try to put
- 37:04Speaker 1: up the stats and the numbers, and if he didn't,
- 37:06Speaker 1: he was gonna get pissed and powdy. He manages himself,
- 37:11Speaker 1: his demeanor, it's modeled after rules in my mind, and
- 37:16Speaker 1: that has been so relieving to see. And I think
- 37:20Speaker 1: that's gonna result in a lot of wins. Like it's
- 37:23Speaker 1: gonna he's going to get better throughout the years. Maybe
- 37:26Speaker 1: that doesn't sound like it could happen, but I think
- 37:27Speaker 1: it will.
- 37:29Speaker 2: So we should go nine and three like we should.
- 37:34Speaker 4: Wow, Hunter, look at you putting on that.
- 37:38Speaker 5: I'm just remember fan cap, mister pessimism out the door.
- 37:42Speaker 1: I'm just toofs if we if we lose, if we
- 37:48Speaker 1: lose to some of these teams, I mean you'll hear
- 37:50Speaker 1: mister negativity come back out.
- 37:51Speaker 2: But it.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Right now, like just looking at our opponents, it is
- 37:58Speaker 1: all set up right now for to I mean, ten
- 38:01Speaker 1: and two I think would probably put a playoff conversation.
- 38:03Speaker 1: I'm not saying not expecting that, but I do think
- 38:06Speaker 1: nine to three is a good expectation goal.
- 38:09Speaker 2: And seven and five i'd be disappointed with.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Now, I would eight and four be like, okay, like
- 38:14Speaker 1: that was that was all right, But nine and three
- 38:16Speaker 1: I think should be where we should be thinking this
- 38:18Speaker 1: team should end up at, especially with the way some
- 38:20Speaker 1: of these other teams have looked. Again, Indiana is the
- 38:24Speaker 1: one asterisks I have in there that I'm like, yeah,
- 38:26Speaker 1: I don't know what's going to happen in that game.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Right before we play Ohio.
- 38:30Speaker 3: State, Ucla might be the worst team in your schedule.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Or Purdue.
- 38:37Speaker 3: They're both horrible. They Ucla is awful. Welcome the big thing, all.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Right, we'll be back Wednesday previewing the fighting alone.
- 38:47Speaker 2: I Burt Bilma, go big Red, I v R.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Let's change up skull two and oh
- 39:41Speaker 5: That t
