- Catie Fitzgerald: Welcome back to from nine to mom and I don't know the rest because Danielle usually does it and today and I don't listen enough to do it You do too. Oh sure if you're not watching. This is my lovely husband Ryan has joined me We are post bedtime recording While Danielle's on vacation in Florida where it's not really posted to the account is posted both kids aren't asleep yet That's true. We don't know if there's their sleep or not. We want to go through things that we wish we knew. I think it's a good post bedtime conversation. I wish we had a couple of drinks, but it's the week during the week. So we really can't do that. But no. So I think we wanted to go through now that Jack's four and a half and Calvin's going to be a three in another couple of months, we're out of the like baby fog and we want to start. going through some of the things that we wish we knew from baby time to now. So I think we have to go back to start to when I was very first pregnant. ⁓ man. Because I feel like a lot of the conversation is always around, you know, as soon as the girl gets pregnant, like, you know, things changed for me, changed for me instantly, but not so much for you. Right. But maybe it did. What changed? What do you remember about that? Only thing I really, the biggest thing, preface this, I'm a teacher, so I work with 95 % women, mostly and it's I love working with that many women sometimes. ⁓ And I the biggest thing for me was just the amount of, the instantly amount of advice ⁓ I got, unsolicited I got from them. Good, bad, indifferent, but mostly good. ⁓ And just being like overload, like so much. Do this, do this, do that, do this, do this. thought that was like that was something that was like really just came on fast. Like ⁓ we people you were pregnant and then it was like here are 50 things that you need to think about. And you're like, wait a second. I don't even know what's going on. Right. And I I mean, hopefully I played it off like I knew what the heck I was talking about. I didn't. You don't know. That's well, that is the part of it is that ⁓ I this advice to everyone is that as soon as you're on the other side of having your first you always want to give advice or do that. I feel like people do, some people try to give the advice of what works for them. So it is important to listen to people and just take it with a grain of salt because you'll pick and choose what parts that maybe you adapt when you become a parent or as you go through pregnancy or whatever it is. The just weights are always really fun. And it's so cliche because it's like, yeah, very love people are like, ⁓ it's of the most ⁓ I have most. don't even know who said it to me, but I think I was just complaining, not even complaining, just that you were having a hard time sleeping when you were pregnant, like maybe like three fourths of the way there. Yeah. And someone was like, just wait till the baby's born. And I and I almost wanted to be like, I can't wait. Like, what do you mean? I can't physically ⁓ can't make this go any faster. So that was something I always felt like and I try to be cognizant of of saying that to people now that are expecting Usually usually if parents if it's mostly dads that want to talk to me Like my friends or you co-workers that are expecting Most of the time female co-workers don't ask me what you expect But something I've had a few conversations with expecting fathers and you know the biggest thing I just say to them is like just you gotta They gotta be on the same team. You gotta be in the same you know, stratosphere, maybe even a little bit closer to your to your expecting mother. Sure. But I think that is honestly like is one like somebody's like, what's the best advice you can give and the best thing. And I know we're we're being like really formal already talking, but like like even joking, not joking. Like we always look at each other and like we're on the same team. We literally just took a nine and a half hour ride to Virginia Beach. And the second I got both kids in the car. And they were both just screaming. And I was like, Katie, I'm going to be in the car for 19 hours. You can't you can't lash out on like the baby or you can stop bumping into you. You you can't lash out on the baby or a toddler or anyone. So you end up turning to your partner. The only other person that you're able to lash out at. And yeah, our rule second time around with Calvin, we didn't do a good job with this with Jack. And me and you did a good job alternating and I know not ever overnight anyway, as far as like who wakes up with the baby overnight. Me and Ryan made it rule basically from when we went to bed till the morning, like 10 PM to 6 AM, nothing you say counts. You're not allowed to hold it against each other in the morning. Cause sometimes it would just be one of us based on like when you went back to work or when we were both back to work, like who had a busy day the next day, or one of us would be more sleep deprived than the other. you just. same mean things when the other one doesn't wake up. That one or, know, the other the other one. I just can I can remember being like a Saturday morning and Jack being like a couple of months old and not sleeping and us both coming downstairs and Katie would be like, Oh, how are doing? I'm tired. How are you doing? I'm tired. Like, of course, I know you're fucking tired. Like, is there going to be anything we ever talk about? No. And that just seems like there's no end in sight. But then it does get hate to be like this. It's cliche, but it does get better. You know, you kind of get you. You were up with Calvin last night. I've been up with coming the last four nights. Someone's been sleeping well, which is fine. I do sleep through it now. Like I sleep through it. You wake up so easily. I'm a light sleeper. Is what it is. So yeah, I would say that was probably the biggest thing is just like, try really hard to be, try really hard to just be in the same. It's hard for a guy. You don't, don't know. We've never been pregnant. I never had to push the baby out of my vagina. Like, you know, I don't know. Uh, try to be on the same strategy, same wavelength and Just, you know, support in every relationship is different too. know, some people need a little bit more tough love. Some people just need a little bit to be babied or to be, you know, has, gives some extra attention. don't know. So, yeah, I feel like from baby stuff is such a fog for us a little bit now. ⁓ how I'm to block that though. like, you just, blocked out what we wish we knew. And I feel like, so, ⁓ Obviously, this is a one sided conversation because we formula fed both babies. So when it comes to feeding, wasn't like one of us took the workload on that. We split literally every night. It was always. maybe we have a little bit of a obsessive compulsive, but like we were I think until Kelvin stopped having bottles, I really think that we went every other night who was getting up with him. Literally, never unless obviously somebody was out in town or something, but we just it was an alternation. I think just knowing that. They were going to have a night. You were going to have a night that you were going to sleep really helped. And again, there's different situations for people who are nursing or doing all the things. And that's that's a hard part, too, is like, I know a lot of my friends that their that their wives are nursing doing all the nighttime stuff. And it's like I would feel me, personally would feel so guilty. ⁓ But you got to support in the ways that you can. Right. Like, yeah. Well, I think that goes into like what are where we're now. currently with the kids, what are like things that you just like think are your responsibilities versus mine? Like that we just don't even think, like kind of just are unsaid. Well, I think the two things, big things recently, I think it's just been because of Kelvin is like, we've kind of had a default parent, like Jack and I default to each other and Kelvin and you default to each other pretty much. The biggest example of that was we went to Florida on our February. Man, we still like jet setters. ⁓ We ⁓ Everyone does listen regularly knows we are not. I know, but we went to Florida for February, my February break, it wasn't even a question who was sleeping with it. Like it was not like, ⁓ we're going to alternate. was just ⁓ slept with dad, Kelvin slept with mom. So, but other than that, I think most of the, the, mean, we're hopefully knock on wood on the other side of maybe some potty training with Kelvin, but I just feel like any like boy body stuff questions, like, know. I have to tell the story. I tell the story? I'm going to. Calvin is just very into his body, like whatever. And we were ⁓ about he was pooping one day and he's like, where does the poop come? go, comes from your butthole. And he goes, ⁓ and he looks me dead in the face, is serious to me and goes, does mommy have a butthole? I just, ⁓ and so hard. I I laugh, but like, I was like, yeah, mom, everybody's got a butthole. Like, ⁓ so think that those types of questions, I mean, we've. just seeing Jack obviously as he's gotten older now, but like we're a little bit more aware of like how we talk in front of him or what we wear in front of him or you most mostly. mean, I'm not great about it, but like is what it is, you know. Gone are the days of getting dressed. But I mean, so like when I like ⁓ around the house, like what are things that you just don't worry about? I mean, ⁓ long you got? I mean, honestly, what are the things that you feel like you take care of that I just don't worry about? mean, I to be honest with you, 2026, I do cook most every night. I thought that you wouldn't, but I do cook mostly every night. I cook something and then you're usually done with work before me. Right. And I can prep and stuff. But, know, I do those types of things. I mean, obviously any of the outside stuff that are you thinking that kind of stuff? guess I understand the question. So like, things repeat the question, please. Oh, God. I mean, like things that we just have fallen into, I think we've gotten into our routine with the kids being a little older now, like in the mornings, like you're down here, you get downstairs first and like start doing stuff. There's things I just don't think about because I know that you're going to do it versus like. What are some of things that you do that I don't or that I don't, and I guess I don't know. Maybe I just, it's that routine for me. Sorry. We'll move on. I think to like our logistics and planning. think that's maybe where I was getting to of like, manage our schedule. Like there's some things that are, the administrator you're the office administrator of this family. Yeah. All right. You run my schedule. think what people are going to really want to hear with us. Cause I think we've been a little boring ⁓ is, like we should talk about how our relationship has changed from ⁓ we had kids. And I feel like. It's hard because we started having kids at COVID. So like, it wasn't like we were out every night, like traveling, like doing, we couldn't. But I feel like we did a little bit before that, but we were young. We were young. mean, we had kids at 29. How old were we? 29, 30? You're older than me. So, um, I just feel like our relationship itself, I mean, you go through, when you have kids, like there's going to be times where you just don't want to leave me look at each other. Um, But really you're focused on life changes though too, right? Like sometimes you're just like grinding it out. I feel like there was like, especially with two under two, like three years, I feel like we just like got through. Like we were living, like it's not like a bad fall. Like, mean, like we were doing stuff and having fun, but like change, right? You're not getting, if you go out, so the, biggest thing is like we went out and I got drunk, you know, the next day I could just lay on the couch and watch football or baseball or basketball or something on TV for 12 hours and go and ask myself lunch. Now it's like you go out and you have some drinks and it's like you wake up and it's like, oh, someone's gonna be up at 6 a.m. That's kind of the hard part. Did we have more date nights? Did we do that? Did we have dates? You and I have a little bit of a different situation just because we lived alone. So when we were out, when we were living in Florida and Pittsburgh, that's all we had. didn't have friends. We have friends now. We do. But that's I think now is like when we get a sitter, we're like, are we going to go out alone? Like we want to with people. We to be around adults. Make the most of it. It is harder. And you have a way harder than I do because I'm around, I mean, I'm around kids all day, but I'm also around other adults. There days, weeks that you don't see another human being other than me. I like it that way. I know you do, but it's good to just charge up that social battery every now and then or recharge Yeah, I don't know. I feel like obviously. you know, the physical stuff kind of is a different beast as well because your body changes. Be careful of the hole you dig here. No, I don't think there's a, I mean your body changes. mean, there's, that's just, it is what it is. You ask any, not any, some pregnant women or postpartum women, it takes a long time, not a long time. I don't know. It takes some time. Keep going. to get back to where you want to be. And then think there's a lot of hormonal things that go into that. I my side of things hasn't really changed too much other than, you know, getting the vasectomy twice. People have heard that. They have. If you haven't, go back and listen. But yeah, I think that's part of it too. I that's part of a relationship is is ⁓ the side of things. I mean, ⁓ no ands buts about it. So, ⁓ Yeah. There there are weeks that you just don't look at each other. So I think we're from, going ⁓ one kid to two kids, what are some things that we took with us from Jack and we kept doing and what are some things we didn't keep doing? The first thing that comes to mind is the app tracker with the feeding. So, but here's the thing we use it with Kelvin for like three months. then we, think we went further. I feel like it almost was more necessary with Kelvin. Yeah. Because we couldn't remember when we, because we were just moving so much. So basically what I'm talking about is that we had an app that we would track when we fed the greatest free app on the planet, in my opinion, for, for parents. If you don't have it, I mean, there's a billion of them, but for whatever reason, I had, this one was so user friendly, so nice. And it just at 2 AM when you, when you get in the habit of putting in and tracking when you, how much food they ate. Cause when we were alternating. I'd get up at two, she'd get up at five. She wants to know how much he ate at two. Or how long he actually slept if I didn't sleep through it. But the Nara Baby app, it was really helpful for us and it does more than just We'll tag them in the comments. we used the free version and it was more than we needed. did that and ⁓ could add as many family members to it so you could have multiple caretakers. Our parents absolutely hated it. were like, we never had this. I was like, yeah, I've been in need for 12 hours. We just with how many people were involved. It was very helpful to us. And I think typically I think people would be like, ⁓ you don't need that for a second kid. And it's like, actually, I thought we needed it more. Yeah. And I think to the second kid, there are certain I should have thought it should have thought more about this before we did this. But there are situations I remember, especially when Brandon Calvin was first born. I was like, ⁓ shit, like I forgot I have to do that with the baby. Like, perfect. I remember giving Calvin a bottle. Like when he was like a week or two old. And again, you get in like the habit of it, like giving him the bottle and then you just kind of set them up on your shoulder and he just puked all over your shoulder because you forgot to burp him and you're like, oh crap. I mean, at that point, Jack was drinking milk out of a bottle, but like, you know, it's just one of those things where you, get back into it. But like, I can only imagine like my, my parents or your parents, right? When they had Jack, the first grandkids, like how long it felt to take them to get that back into like the, like the routine of it. And that was 30 years. Right. I think too, I'm trying to think of other things that like we caught on to really quickly and we're just like, ⁓ because the app was a huge thing for us. It also eliminated that like issue. Like out there has felt this when you're on maternity leave and you're here, you're in your house alone with the baby. Right. Like I remember vividly being alone with Jack ⁓ crying, crying. I'm like, okay, I changed you. You're not going to sleep. Right. What the hell? Like what's going on? Like I can't do it. And then All of a sudden, I'm just finally sitting down, letting them scream at me. And I'm like, my God, I didn't beat him. And then I looked at the app and that triggered it for me. And you're just in such a fog that I don't know. feel like that was not something I'm glad we did it. We learned that though, when we were in the NINQ. They were us the schedule and we were trying to maintain what they were doing. Honestly, horrible for Jack to be in the NINQ. Great for us because that was like crash. It was like parent 101 in like a week. So it was really nice to have like, we had a really good experience obviously, but just great nurses that like just literally explained every single thing to us. Honestly, I don't know if I would have been able to do all that the first week. We were unprepared. Everyone is. Yeah. And that's what I tell people. Everyone's unprepared. If you feel like you're unprepared, you just can't, you've got to live it. You've got to have that kid screaming your face at 3 a.m. for... And get through it. I think something that just also came to mind is like things that we wish we could go back and tell ourselves. I feel like with Jack... We were really like about him crying in public. ⁓ nobody cares. And then it's like the second kid comes around. like, yeah, he's crying. It's a baby. Like, what did you expect? Yeah, I definitely. You're at me like that's your problem. Honestly, I feel like that recently, like we've been kind of we went out on vacation, but like also just been going taking the kids out more like I care. I mean, I care if Calvin's grabbing crawling on the table. Now it's behavioral. Right. It's not like anything that like he can he can control. He can control a lot of it, you know? So it's like, now it's like, you know, discipline and like getting the boys not to be feral, you know, in public. They can be feral here, that's fine. at, you the grandparents' house. You to be, know, just be like decent people in public as well. And that's, you know, if we kind of hash back to what I'm, what's part of my situation of like, my like default is like, I feel like I am doing a lot with Jack right now of like teaching him how to manage his emotions a little bit more, because he's getting that at school. But I also just feel like he's an emotional kid he takes after me. Like he just gets very worked up. That's on the record. He gets really worked up about things he really has no control over or his brother. And it's like, I have to like coach him on that. And that kind of goes back to like, I've had to do a lot of that in my own classroom, like my own teaching. Like, yeah, that's such a big thing now is like not only are you teaching the kids, but you're also teaching them like, you know, math, reading, writing, but also teaching them how to be a decent human being and how to, know, not that their parents aren't. but they need to see it all throughout the day. Yes. All right. So let's go into like, cause we're coming out of potty training. What's something that you wish we knew with Jack? Potty training? Yeah. Now that I put too much pressure on him, mean, that's just, I mean, I think so too. think we maybe did it too early. We just felt pressure though, because he was supposed to go to pre-school. He's young. So right. He's a September birthday. So I've always been in the impression, like, I don't think holding him back. is going to do anybody any good other than the fact that maybe he'll just be taller and maybe, maybe a little bit better at sports. I just feel like, you know, potty training, we were just so, I felt so under the gun because we had to get him potty trained the summer before he went to nursery school. And then kids were going to nursery school and pull-ups. Right. So it's like, you wish you knew that we didn't have to feel that pressure. wasn't that big of a deal. But like they wrote in like first time parents were like, Oh my God, the teacher wants us to submit that he needs to be able to wipe his own ass. he needs to be able to He doesn't poop at school. No, I love that though. I love that. I don't either do he want to wipe he wants to do his own we had to get yeah, but they so that I think that was also something like now we wait we weren't in a rush with Calvin I can't even believe we're saying that Sorry, I am yeah, it's like maybe because he's more mature or maybe it's just a second kid thing. I don't know Yeah, I don't know I again I hate to be like this because I was kind of worried about Calvin I was like this kid doesn't care about diapers. You'd sit on the He'd lay down on the floor, put his legs up and they were like, all right, come change me. He'd say those words out loud and I'd be like, ⁓ man. This is never gonna happen. And then just a click. And I remember talking to my cousin who's got two boys and he was just saying the same thing. He's like, honestly, the first one, you just want everything to be perfect. You don't wanna be the part of this kid's life that fucks up. You wanna hit all the miles so he wants you to I remember he was just like, dude, they're gonna, you never, and he's like, you should know this better than anybody. You go to ⁓ And unless it's a very special situation, every kid can, you know, can say their, their name. Every kid can pee and poop on the potty. Every kid can, you know, do the check marks. And it's just developmental. think the more pressure you put on them, I feel like, like, I feel like I'm, I feel guilty sometimes because I don't, I, put pressure on them. Yeah. I feel like one of the things too, that right now that we've been going through or I've been making us go through is eating like healthier foods. And I feel like I'm so worried about it. feel like eventually I'm going to look back and be like, Oh my God, why was I worried about that? Like, I wish I knew this or if there's some secret, please message us. But I've been like slowly trying to just like get better versions of our snacks or like the food we're giving. But then like tonight for dinner, Calvin chowed down a freaking hot dog, a full of Lizzy. No, no, no bunch. Straight dog. And like I have a video of Jack. So I made Jack have one. I would say two centimeters of a hot dog on a fork and he's eating and he's like, and Kelvin's like, I love the rest. Just slurping them up. So it's just, it's just, so like, obviously I don't want to give them like hot dogs, not the healthiest, but like I need them to eat. But then it's like, I'm trying to give them the right food. And I don't know if that's something eventually that will be like, Oh, I wish we knew that they were going to be. fat in five years anyway, whatever we gave I think it's just building good habits of food, you know, and I think for us it's like, two schools of thought, right? It's like, eat whenever you want. Now, in my family, I was not an eat whenever you want family. We were three square meals and maybe a snack before bed. But also was ⁓ a boy growing up, not big, but like if I could eat, I would. You know, but your family, I know, is different situation. You could eat. You could go to that closet in their cupboard pantry and you could eat whatever you want and whenever you want. So I think you got to find that balance of like not, you know, an army and not an army, but not a free for all, not the old country buffet, you know. So I feel like though it is like everything anyone ever says, you're like, have to just see what works for my family. Right. And. hope for the best. Sometimes that's all it is, is you just wait till it's over and you're like, ⁓ duh, I'm an idiot. Why did I do that? Yeah. And again, it's so hard to pinpoint certain things that you're just like, and there's just certain things that you're just like, I think one big one for us, and I just kind of thought about this, our family. Our families of like, when we did, we very strict with our families with Jack as a baby. No overnights, no, unless we really needed something. ⁓ you know, no, you know, please, you know, make sure he goes out for a nap. I still remember to this day, into my parents' house at like, I don't know, after school, four o'clock or something. And Jack was supposed to be on a nap and napping in his bed. were really, we really adamant about him napping in his crib. So we didn't get used to sleeping on people. And I walked in at like 3.30 PM and there was my dad, all six foot five of them with little Jack just sitting on his chest and looking back, I probably got a little annoyed or maybe I said something, but looking back, it's like, Man, I bet I wish I could do that. Every single one of our my family members would take that right now. You know, have him sleep on his chest with those types of things for Calvin. If you want to sleep on me, he can sleep on me. ⁓ my gosh. I think I don't think he took the only we had to put him down because I couldn't move. So that was also he had a lot of pack and play naps. But yeah, like the the contact napping and stuff now. I'm like, yeah, does that matter? No. And I think you talk to any second parents like, you know, some people are a little bit more, you know, fluid with the schedule. We were always pretty tight with the schedule. Yeah. But I just think that I think that's our personalities. Like 100 percent. We've talked many times in this podcast about how important it is for me to be on a schedule. I know we have a schedule. I look staring at one right now. Yeah, I am. But I'm interested. It would be just wild if we ever had a third kid. What it would have been like, because you just you obviously keep learning. And like we're at a point now where there are some people in our Lives that have had a third kid and we're like, man, how are you doing it? Yeah, they're the real, they could come on here and be like, yeah, well, here are the things that I learned. I stopped doing it. Now I feel better. little more relaxed. I'm not so crazy, but I think so. I think too, having that second kid just kind of, would say having a, a successful first kid helps it kind of justifies or like keeps you like, okay, there is a light at end of the tunnel. Like Jack is not a complete unit. They know complete. train wreck, like we are doing something right, but well, they're not, the kids aren't the same either. And that's, that's what we're going. feel like the biggest thing right now is that Jack and Calvin are like very different, um, personality wise and like Calvin's turning into a little brother. Um, very much so. And like doing things to piss Jack off on purpose. um, I don't know they fight a lot, but like, I fought a lot with my brother. So, all right. So what are the keys to? Happy wife, happy life. Happy wife, happy life. everything. checking the score of the Braves game. ⁓ happy wife, happy life. What are the things that you need to do that just make happier? I get your oil change, I get you things in your car that you need, we get you new windshield wipers. Well those are just jobs, that doesn't make me happy. Yeah, they make you happy because you don't have to do them. ⁓ All happy life. I mean, I feel like... I don't know, just, we've also known each other for like 14 years. Well, a lot of people have known each other for, you know, I know what you like. So what do I like? Attention. Okay. recently, last couple of years have been a real ⁓ quite the coffee girl, which crazy. If you Casey, Katie growing up, she was just not a coffee girl. ⁓ Literally until Calvin, finally kicked me over the edge. Got an espresso. ⁓ I know. Shout out to espresso as well. some free pods. I don't know. I feel like you. You need to have like a have a purpose in life. And this is nothing against staying home parents, but like just knowing you as like a person who likes like in their job and business, like you would not be satisfied in life just staying home with the kids. And again, that's you. That's you. I think you are in your you're in your it's really interesting to see how you. can turn on business, business bitch, and then also in the door and turn them on. I that's really impressive. I ⁓ have hard time turning Mr. Fitzgerald off and then turning dad on. But yeah, you walk up the stairs sometimes and it's like, I just heard you ⁓ getting yelled by a client or ⁓ whatever. And you walk up the stairs and Calvin's like, I need my water. And you're like, and you can just, I would flip out. I'd be like. I'd be like, oh, wait a minute. So I think that you're really good at that. I'm glad this turned into compliment hour. Well, that's what you like, happy wife, happy wife. what's like, I'm just thinking of like, if you were trying to impress me or get me out of bad mood, what do we do? Go get Starbucks or Steppenbrew. I don't know. I feel like we also can just go out. You like your retail therapy? Just buying stuff. We'll just go walk through BJ's and buy stuff for the outside I just feel like this time of year we go we get in like a you get into that like sun's out It's 50 like let's go make our backyard like a resort like a to be yeah That's like something we risk like being outside and like when you live up here.
