- 0:25Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:29facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:32Today's episode is all about something super cool that every
- 0:35single person on Earth is a part of, even though most of us never
- 0:39really notice it. We're talking about our home
- 0:41Galaxy, the Milky Way. Buckle up, because we're about
- 0:45to take an amazing journey through outer space.
- 0:48No spaceship required. Let's start with the basics.
- 0:52When you look up at the night sky, what do you see?
- 0:54You probably noticed the moon, some twinkling stars, maybe even
- 0:58a planet or two if you're lucky. But have you ever wondered what
- 1:02all those stars are a part of? The answer is the Milky Way
- 1:05Galaxy, and it's much, much bigger than you can imagine.
- 1:09So what exactly is a Galaxy? A Galaxy is a huge collection of
- 1:14stars, gas, dust, and planets all held together by gravity.
- 1:20Galaxies come in different shapes and sizes.
- 1:23Some are small and round, and others are huge and have spiral
- 1:27arms. The Milky Way is a spiral
- 1:29Galaxy, which means it looks kind of like a giant pinwheel
- 1:32with arms that swirl out from the center.
- 1:35The Milky Way is our home Galaxy.
- 1:37That means our solar system, with the sun, Earth and all the
- 1:40other planets lives inside the Milky Way, but we're just a tiny
- 1:44part of it. Scientists think the Milky Way
- 1:47has about 100 billion stars. That's a number so big it's hard
- 1:52to imagine. If you try to count every star
- 1:55in the Milky Way, counting one star per second, it would take
- 1:58you over 3000 years to finish. Now let's talk about size.
- 2:03The Milky Way is enormous. From one edge to the other, it's
- 2:07about 100,000 light years across.
- 2:10A light year is the distance light travels in one year, and
- 2:13light is the fastest thing in the universe.
- 2:16Light can travel around the Earth more than seven times in
- 2:19just one second. So if you wanted to travel
- 2:22across the Milky Way at the speed of light, it would still
- 2:25take you 100,000 years. That's way longer than even the
- 2:29oldest trees on Earth have been alive.
- 2:32Did you know that when you see the Milky Way stretched like a
- 2:35Milky band across the night sky, you're actually looking at the
- 2:38part of our Galaxy where the stars are packed together?
- 2:41People have been seeing this band for thousands of years.
- 2:44Long ago, people who didn't have telescopes made-up stories about
- 2:47what it was. Today we know it's our view of
- 2:51the dense center of our Galaxy. Let's zoom in a bit and talk
- 2:54about where our solar system is in the Milky Way.
- 2:57We don't live near the center. Our solar system is about 27,000
- 3:02light years away from the center of the Galaxy.
- 3:04That's about halfway out from the middle.
- 3:07Imagine the Milky Way is like a giant spinning disc.
- 3:10The center is very crowded with stars, gas, and even a
- 3:14supermassive black hole. That's right, there's a black
- 3:17hole at the center of the Milky Way, and it's called
- 3:20Sagittarius, a star. Don't worry, it's very, very far
- 3:24away from us and doesn't affect our solar system.
- 3:27The Milky Way spins, but not like a spinning top on a table.
- 3:31It takes a long time to make one complete turn.
- 3:34Our solar system orbits around the center of the Milky Way.
- 3:38One full trip around the Galaxy takes about 230 million years.
- 3:42That means the last time our solar system was in this same
- 3:45spot in the Galaxy, dinosaurs were walking on Earth.
- 3:49Here's a fun fact, our Galaxy isn't alone in space.
- 3:53There are billions of other galaxies out there.
- 3:55The Milky Way is part of a group of galaxies called the Local
- 3:58Group. The closest big Galaxy to us is
- 4:01the Andromeda Galaxy. It's about 2.5 million light
- 4:05years away. If you had super powered eyes
- 4:08and could see really far, you could spot Andromeda in the
- 4:11night sky without a telescope. In a few billion years, the
- 4:14Milky Way and Andromeda will actually get closer and might
- 4:17even mix together to form a new, larger Galaxy.
- 4:21Let's talk about what the Milky Way is made of.
- 4:24Most people think of stars when they think of galaxies, but
- 4:27there's more to it than that. The Milky Way also has giant
- 4:30clouds of gas and dust. New stars are born in these
- 4:34clouds, and old stars eventually explode and send their material
- 4:38back out into space. This helps make new stars and
- 4:41planets. So in a way, the Milky Way is
- 4:44always changing and growing. Did you know that the Sun is
- 4:48just an ordinary star among billions in the Milky Way?
- 4:51Some stars are bigger, some are smaller, and some have planets
- 4:55orbiting around them, just like our solar system.
- 4:58Astronomers have found thousands of these other planets, which
- 5:01are called exoplanets. Some of them might even have the
- 5:05right conditions for life. Now let's talk about how
- 5:08scientists study the Milky Way. We can't leave our solar system
- 5:12to take a picture from the outside, so astronomers use
- 5:15powerful telescopes to look at different parts of our Galaxy.
- 5:18They use telescopes that collect visible light, but also radio
- 5:22waves, infrared, and X-rays. This helps them see things that
- 5:26our eyes can't see, like the massive clouds of gas or the
- 5:30black hole at the center. Have you ever heard of the
- 5:32Hubble Space Telescope? It's a telescope that orbits
- 5:35above Earth and takes amazing pictures of space, including
- 5:39parts of our Milky Way. Thanks to telescopes like
- 5:42Hubble, we've learned so much about our Galaxy and others.
- 5:47Here's another interesting fact, the Milky Way isn't standing
- 5:50still. It's moving through space, and
- 5:52so is everything in it. Our entire Galaxy is traveling
- 5:57at hundreds of kilometers per second.
- 5:59That means even though you feel like you're sitting still right
- 6:01now, you're actually zooming through space along with the
- 6:04Earth, the Sun, and all the stars in our Galaxy.
- 6:07You might be wondering how the Milky Way got its name.
- 6:10The name comes from the way the Galaxy looks in the sky, a Milky
- 6:15glowing path. The word Milky Way comes from
- 6:18the Latin via Lactia, which means Milky Rd.
- 6:22Many cultures around the world have their own names for the
- 6:24Milky Way, often inspired by its bright, cloudy appearance.
- 6:29Let's do a quick review of what we learned today.
- 6:32The Milky Way is our home Galaxy.
- 6:34It's a giant spiral shaped collection of about 100 billion
- 6:38stars, including our Sun. Our solar system is about
- 6:41halfway from the center of the Galaxy, and it takes about 230
- 6:45million years to go all the way around.
- 6:48There's a supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky
- 6:51Way, but it's very far away from us and doesn't affect our solar
- 6:55system. The Milky Way is made of stars,
- 6:58gas, dust, and other objects, and it's always changing as new
- 7:02stars are born and old ones die. There are billions of other
- 7:06galaxies in the universe, and the Milky Way is just one of
- 7:09them. Scientists use telescopes to
- 7:11study our Galaxy and learn more about it every day.
- 7:15Before we finish, here are a few more fun facts about the Milky.
- 7:19If you look at the night sky from a very dark place far away
- 7:22from city lights, you can see the Milky Way as a glowing band
- 7:26stretching across the sky. Astronauts on the International
- 7:29Space Station can also see the Milky Way from space, and they
- 7:33say it's an amazing sight. The oldest stars in the Milky
- 7:37Way are about 13 billion years old, which is almost as old as
- 7:41the universe itself. And finally, every atom in your
- 7:44body was once part of a star. That means you're made of the
- 7:48same stuff as the stars in the Milky Way.
- 7:51Thanks for joining us on Kick Ass Daily today to explore our
- 7:55home Galaxy, the Milky Way. The universe is a big place and
- 7:59there's always more to learn. Keep looking up at the night
- 8:02sky, stay curious, and remember there's a whole Galaxy out there
- 8:07waiting for you to discover. See you next time.
- 8:11Grab your breakfast feeling fine adventure.
