- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:18Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:20Speaker 1: fifty nine, and today in the show, we're catching up
- 0:23Speaker 1: with Dan Johnson on summer trail camera work, summer scouting,
- 0:27Speaker 1: summer preparations for the season, and a little bit fun
- 0:30Speaker 1: in between. All Right, welcome to the Wired Hunt podcast,
- 0:45Speaker 1: brought to you by on X. Today is one I've
- 0:49Speaker 1: been looking forward to for weeks now. Um, we're gonna
- 0:54Speaker 1: talk about summer white tail prep. We're gonna talk about
- 0:56Speaker 1: trail cameras and scouting and Velvet bucks and all good stuff.
- 1:01Speaker 1: But that's the kind of thing you know, you get
- 1:03Speaker 1: to hear on a weekly basis on this podcast other podcasts.
- 1:05Speaker 1: But what you don't get to hear is often, especially
- 1:08Speaker 1: anymore now that we're busy fathers and business owners and
- 1:11Speaker 1: all this crazy stuff we got going on. What you
- 1:13Speaker 1: don't get to hear as much is what I need
- 1:16Speaker 1: more in my life. It's Dan Johnson and Mark Kenyon
- 1:19Speaker 1: talking about stupid stuff like peanut butter and kids and
- 1:22Speaker 1: who knows what else Have we ever talked about peanut
- 1:25Speaker 1: butter before? For sure? I'm pretty sure. For some reason,
- 1:28Speaker 1: I'm thinking of some kind of weird kids store with
- 1:30Speaker 1: peanut butter. Do you have? Isn't there something like your
- 1:32Speaker 1: kids were doing with peanut butter? Or maybe maybe think
- 1:35Speaker 1: of the dog food one, the one time you open
- 1:37Speaker 1: up a can of dog food and thought it was
- 1:39Speaker 1: human food and eata that one? Maybe? Yeah, that, yeah,
- 1:43Speaker 1: I can I can see that happening. I really don't
- 1:45Speaker 1: even question things anymore. If someone told me, dude, you're
- 1:48Speaker 1: a murderer, I'd be like, yeah, I probably did. I
- 1:51Speaker 1: don't even remember what happened last week. So how are you,
- 1:55Speaker 1: my friend? I'm good, dude, Just sitting here with a
- 1:59Speaker 1: nice glaze a sweat here in Iowa. It's hot, it's humid,
- 2:04Speaker 1: it's normal, and uh, I don't know, just live in life.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I guess, just living life. You know, it's funny, we're
- 2:11Speaker 1: just talking before we started recording. We've been doing this
- 2:14Speaker 1: podcast for six years now or seven I mean the
- 2:18Speaker 1: spring of ten, fourteen fifteen, sixteen seventy, so seven seasons
- 2:23Speaker 1: now worth of the Wire Dram podcast. And you've been
- 2:26Speaker 1: on a ton of them. Um In all that time,
- 2:31Speaker 1: we've probably gotten a little smarter. Maybe we've gotten a
- 2:34Speaker 1: little bit better deer hunting. We've we've grown our families.
- 2:37Speaker 1: But we're still doing some super hill billy ship Like
- 2:40Speaker 1: I'm recording my truck. You're recording with like fans and
- 2:44Speaker 1: a C units run in the background. We just no
- 2:47Speaker 1: shirt on today, no shirt, no shirt on, dude, I
- 2:52Speaker 1: wish you could. I'm glad this isn't a video podcast
- 2:54Speaker 1: all right where you can see me in my all
- 2:57Speaker 1: my love that God has given me. Well when I'm
- 3:02Speaker 1: I'm recording Idaho right now. So our place out here
- 3:05Speaker 1: is so small that I can't record in the house
- 3:07Speaker 1: when the kids are napping, so I'm in the truck.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And then when I'm at home, I still have to
- 3:11Speaker 1: do the same thing you do. I have to turn
- 3:13Speaker 1: off my little mobile a C unit in my home
- 3:15Speaker 1: office when it's super duper hot because that's too loud.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So I usually record shirtless in Michigan too, So maybe
- 3:22Speaker 1: we should do a shirtless episode, man video video episode shirtless.
- 3:29Speaker 1: You know, I think that's the only thing that we
- 3:31Speaker 1: haven't really done. Suppose ourselves physically to our listeners. That
- 3:36Speaker 1: might be the straw that broke the camel's back. The
- 3:38Speaker 1: dude like we've been we've been riding and but what
- 3:41Speaker 1: did they say, riding on buying geez, writing on bought time.
- 3:49Speaker 1: But yeah, I don't know. I thought you're gonna help
- 3:54Speaker 1: me out with that one. I don't I don't have
- 3:55Speaker 1: the words. Dude, you're the guy who wrote a book.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I can't barely talk. I yell at my kids. I
- 4:02Speaker 1: I tell I'm yelling at my kids, and I don't
- 4:04Speaker 1: even say their names right, So no one's looking at me.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Everyone's ignoring me, and I just sound like I'm having
- 4:10Speaker 1: a stroke. So what's what's new with the kids, because
- 4:13Speaker 1: that's something we haven't got to catch up on a while.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Family Dan Johnson family stories, any crisis, any crazy stuff,
- 4:19Speaker 1: and he destroyed furniture. Um, A good, well, it's nothing.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I mean, there's literally a crazy story every single day
- 4:30Speaker 1: in our house. But we've lost two remotes, so we
- 4:36Speaker 1: had to buy a third one. So we get home
- 4:38Speaker 1: from the store and then my two boys they start
- 4:41Speaker 1: fighting with each other like they're like wrestling hard, and
- 4:43Speaker 1: then you know, the wrestling turns into a fight, and
- 4:46Speaker 1: then my oldest son picks my youngest son up and
- 4:49Speaker 1: throws him against the chair. The chair breaks and what
- 4:53Speaker 1: pops out one of the remotes that's lost. So so
- 4:58Speaker 1: there's that over ning. Yeah, there hasn't been a lot
- 5:01Speaker 1: of Fece stories. Um I had Fec stories. Oh I
- 5:05Speaker 1: love a good Fece story. Well, ours is just so
- 5:09Speaker 1: we're out in Idaho, we're trying to do the whole
- 5:12Speaker 1: hiking and still getting out in the wild of the kids.
- 5:15Speaker 1: But ever it is two and a half now and
- 5:18Speaker 1: a little over two, I guess, and then Colt is
- 5:21Speaker 1: five months old, so as you know, it just gets
- 5:24Speaker 1: harder when you've got kids in those age ranges, and
- 5:27Speaker 1: we're still just we're testing, like what can we do?
- 5:29Speaker 1: What can we get away with? And so we decide,
- 5:31Speaker 1: all right, we're gonna go and do a longer hike
- 5:34Speaker 1: than we usually try to do, get more elevation than usual.
- 5:37Speaker 1: We're gonna go kind of ascend this ridge way up
- 5:39Speaker 1: above treeline um in the t tons and but it
- 5:43Speaker 1: was it wasn't too long of a hike. It was
- 5:45Speaker 1: still a reasonable distance, but you were kind of going
- 5:47Speaker 1: up there and I was I was confident. I was
- 5:49Speaker 1: telling Kylie you know, they've been so good. We can
- 5:52Speaker 1: do it. We won't have that too many issues. You
- 5:54Speaker 1: just gotta assume something little is gonna go wrong. We'll
- 5:57Speaker 1: roll with it. Um. Well, we're getting up there, we
- 6:01Speaker 1: get to the top. It's beautiful. We take a break,
- 6:04Speaker 1: we're resting, and then all of a sudden, I think
- 6:07Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember if this before Colt like Colts
- 6:09Speaker 1: writing a chess pack on Kylie. Um. And then Everett,
- 6:13Speaker 1: if he's not walking, he'll ride on in the backpack
- 6:15Speaker 1: on my back, and so could. All of a sudden,
- 6:19Speaker 1: just hear this enormous bowel movement, just rumbling, thunder erupting.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And usually you've got a little time, you know, usually
- 6:30Speaker 1: it's like gonna happen. You hear it, and then it
- 6:33Speaker 1: continues for five ten seconds, and then you go find stuff,
- 6:36Speaker 1: You find a diaper, you find wives, and then you
- 6:38Speaker 1: go and change them. Well, this was the sound was
- 6:41Speaker 1: still emitting from his ass and their stuff squirting out
- 6:44Speaker 1: all over Kylie. And we're, you know, four miles or
- 6:47Speaker 1: whatever it was away from the trailhead. And I think
- 6:51Speaker 1: we only brought this is done. We only brought one
- 6:53Speaker 1: extra diaper for each kid. And explode, like explosion all
- 6:57Speaker 1: over him, all over her. We deal of that, and
- 7:01Speaker 1: then my son, we're still trying to get potty trained
- 7:03Speaker 1: with him and stuff. Um Son number one, we have
- 7:09Speaker 1: the exact same thing happened with him, but instead of
- 7:12Speaker 1: an explosion, we had just I just had forgotten to
- 7:15Speaker 1: check on him, and for whatever reason, I've been paying attention.
- 7:18Speaker 1: And then we're walking around and I see he's pulled
- 7:22Speaker 1: his shorts down, but his diaper is like a balloon
- 7:26Speaker 1: that's sticking out over top of them. So his shorts
- 7:29Speaker 1: are kind of riding just below his butt with his
- 7:31Speaker 1: balloon diaper sticking out the back and you can see
- 7:33Speaker 1: brown stuff. What I call that the double blowout miles
- 7:40Speaker 1: from civilization. Not enough equipment at all, not enough wives,
- 7:45Speaker 1: no extra clothes. So we're riding coming back down the
- 7:47Speaker 1: hill like one kid's wearing shorts, one kids wearing nothing. Uh,
- 7:52Speaker 1: he just you just have a roll. We should have.
- 8:00Speaker 1: We survive who made it out? So I feel like
- 8:03Speaker 1: that's been the name of the game for all the
- 8:04Speaker 1: stuff we've been doing this summer. It's just survival. It's
- 8:07Speaker 1: just like get through it and move on to the
- 8:10Speaker 1: next thing. Yeah, that's all you can do in a
- 8:12Speaker 1: scenario like that, because what's that There's a famous quote
- 8:17Speaker 1: uh in the movie uh point Break where you know,
- 8:22Speaker 1: he's like I do, but he's just like, uh god,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna screw it up. And I love that movie.
- 8:30Speaker 1: It's like failure leads to hesitate, or hesitation leads to fear,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and fear leads to death or something like that, and uh,
- 8:39Speaker 1: it's uh, I gotta I'm screwing this up. Someone's gonna
- 8:42Speaker 1: roast me for this. But um, fear causes hesitation, and
- 8:46Speaker 1: hesitation causes your worst nightmares to come true. That's what
- 8:49Speaker 1: it is. So you can't you can't hesitate in a
- 8:52Speaker 1: scenario like that. You just gotta you know, scoop the
- 8:55Speaker 1: poop go. Yeah, man, I was thinking we need to
- 8:58Speaker 1: do another episode with you, myself and uh Andy Bradley.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Remember we did that Raising Outdoor Kids episode a couple
- 9:05Speaker 1: of years ago. I was thinking we should try to
- 9:08Speaker 1: do one like every two years updated, yeah, and see, like,
- 9:11Speaker 1: what have we learned in the last two years, And
- 9:12Speaker 1: that was almost exactly two years ago, So maybe the
- 9:14Speaker 1: next one we do in a few weeks, we should
- 9:16Speaker 1: try to do that because there's so much kids stuff
- 9:19Speaker 1: that I'm slowly figuring out now that I'm catching up
- 9:22Speaker 1: to you a little bit. Um. But yeah, it's always
- 9:26Speaker 1: an adventure, that's for sure, trying to trying to just
- 9:29Speaker 1: get out and in doing the stuff you want to
- 9:34Speaker 1: do still in finding some way to make it happen
- 9:37Speaker 1: with the new constraints of parenthood is probably the biggest
- 9:39Speaker 1: thing that I'm thinking about so much more now. It's
- 9:43Speaker 1: going from like I don't know knowing the right stuff
- 9:46Speaker 1: to do or doing what Am I doing enough of it?
- 9:48Speaker 1: Now it's all just like efficient. How can I become
- 9:50Speaker 1: more efficient? How can I get the minimum amount done
- 9:53Speaker 1: in the minimum amount of time, just so I can
- 9:55Speaker 1: keep my head above water? Yeah, I gotta I got
- 9:58Speaker 1: a little story for you. Um, how long did you
- 10:01Speaker 1: go during the COVID you know, pandemic here that we're
- 10:04Speaker 1: in How long did you go without a haircut? Uh?
- 10:08Speaker 1: I went a pretty long time. I don't know, two months,
- 10:12Speaker 1: two months, I'm trying to think, I don't know, two months,
- 10:17Speaker 1: three months, something like that. Okay, So a quick story here.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I'm my wife is in the kitchen trying to cut
- 10:23Speaker 1: max hair and she's not doing a very good job.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I take the clippers from her, I start going to
- 10:30Speaker 1: town and crazy enough it comes out looking like a
- 10:34Speaker 1: professional haircut. Okay, I mean it is the crazy story
- 10:40Speaker 1: that you're about to announce a new part time job. No, no, no, no,
- 10:43Speaker 1: the crazy story is coming. So the second now it's
- 10:48Speaker 1: Knox's turned a couple of weeks later, and you know
- 10:51Speaker 1: he's too so he's gonna move around a lot. And
- 10:54Speaker 1: it turned out great except for it, you know, a
- 10:56Speaker 1: couple hey he moved type of situations. So a month
- 11:01Speaker 1: has passed, it's time for Mac to get another haircut.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Now I'm cocky, right, and long story short, Mac now
- 11:11Speaker 1: has a mohawk. Uh is I feel like Mac has
- 11:17Speaker 1: been deserving of a mohawk like that seems like something
- 11:19Speaker 1: he would rock on purpose. He's rocking it. It looks
- 11:22Speaker 1: real good. Actually, um he he flinched real hard with
- 11:27Speaker 1: and then the guard was pushed down back into the clippers,
- 11:31Speaker 1: and then I followed through with my stroke and it
- 11:34Speaker 1: just took this big chunk right out of his head,
- 11:37Speaker 1: like big chunk of hair down to the one guard out.
- 11:40Speaker 1: So there's not much you can do to fix that
- 11:42Speaker 1: except give, you know, follow through with full hawk. I
- 11:47Speaker 1: went full hawk, spiked it up, and now he looks, uh,
- 11:50Speaker 1: he looks like a badass. I believe it. I believe it.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Isn't that funny that that's the same kind of thing
- 11:55Speaker 1: we've started, was doing the self haircut. My wife has
- 11:58Speaker 1: started doing the haircuts, and you know, it's not perfect,
- 12:01Speaker 1: but it's it's kind of serviceable. Um. Yeah, I could
- 12:05Speaker 1: almost see myself just sticking with us. You just it's
- 12:07Speaker 1: good enough. I don't need it to be perfect, right,
- 12:10Speaker 1: save you the trip in some time and money, I
- 12:12Speaker 1: guess in the future. Yep. So, my my wife came
- 12:14Speaker 1: home and she took a look at it, and she said,
- 12:17Speaker 1: you're never cutting the kid's hair again. I was hoping
- 12:21Speaker 1: that she was gonna let you have a free pass. No, no, no,
- 12:25Speaker 1: there's no free pass with that in my life. I
- 12:27Speaker 1: got xed. Are you disappointed by that? Are you glad
- 12:31Speaker 1: to be? It doesn't bother me. It's just one less
- 12:34Speaker 1: thing I have to do now. I think I should
- 12:36Speaker 1: fail other things more often, so my her, her expectations
- 12:40Speaker 1: of me can be much lower. Well, you know that's
- 12:43Speaker 1: the trick that allow us to rights you do such
- 12:46Speaker 1: a horrible job with the dishes or something that they're like, oh,
- 12:48Speaker 1: just let me do it and they move on that.
- 12:51Speaker 1: That's like, that's always a good strong move to play
- 12:53Speaker 1: during household stuff, parents stuff, I try, I try, UM,
- 13:00Speaker 1: and life I lift. What about trying to say here?
- 13:03Speaker 1: I find myself needing what you needed so often years
- 13:09Speaker 1: ago where you would get on the phone me for
- 13:12Speaker 1: these podcasts and just be like, I need to talk
- 13:14Speaker 1: about something other than kids. What's going on our kind
- 13:18Speaker 1: of craziness. Yeah, and that's definitely what we're at right now. UM. Okay,
- 13:23Speaker 1: so my first, my first questions for you, because we're
- 13:25Speaker 1: gonna talk about white tails, right yeah. Okay, So my
- 13:28Speaker 1: first question to you is, you're out in Idaho right now.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Do you have a designated designated trail camera checker who
- 13:39Speaker 1: goes in while you're out there, checks the cams and
- 13:42Speaker 1: sends you back the intel. I should, but no I don't. UM.
- 13:48Speaker 1: In past years, I've set cameras before I take off
- 13:51Speaker 1: and just let them sit and then I come back
- 13:53Speaker 1: in August and check them. Um. But this year it
- 13:57Speaker 1: was just such a cluster with so many different things
- 13:59Speaker 1: going on on and you know, kids and everything. I
- 14:02Speaker 1: just didn't put any cameras out at all. I said,
- 14:04Speaker 1: you know what, forget it. I'm just gonna put them
- 14:06Speaker 1: in August when I get back because I'm gone to
- 14:09Speaker 1: cameras out right now. I have zero cameras out. I
- 14:13Speaker 1: know that almost like stings a little bit here in that.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I don't like it either, Dane, I don't like it either,
- 14:20Speaker 1: not even a soaker. No soakers out there. No I
- 14:22Speaker 1: should have soakers. That's on me. That's on me. But
- 14:26Speaker 1: but I'll tell you. And one of the things that
- 14:27Speaker 1: one of the things that I thought maybe would make
- 14:30Speaker 1: sense to get into is those pictures that you get,
- 14:32Speaker 1: you know, in June July, especially June July, not as much,
- 14:35Speaker 1: but June. Really that's just like, uh, I'm anxious to
- 14:38Speaker 1: get pictures. I just want to see something for fun.
- 14:42Speaker 1: But they don't do a whole lot for you, like
- 14:43Speaker 1: you can get away. There's nothing. Tell me I'm wrong,
- 14:46Speaker 1: prove me wrong here. But I would say that I
- 14:48Speaker 1: am losing no value whatsoever and not having cameras up
- 14:52Speaker 1: until August. I can get everything I need as far
- 14:54Speaker 1: as summer inventory in the month of August, and then
- 14:56Speaker 1: you know, it changes in September. But in August at
- 14:59Speaker 1: least I get everything I need to know as far
- 15:02Speaker 1: as full potential of what the bucks will be. I'll
- 15:04Speaker 1: know every buck that was there in the summer, and
- 15:08Speaker 1: I don't need to look at a half grown buck
- 15:09Speaker 1: and think to myself is it gonna be one or
- 15:12Speaker 1: one thirty or whatever? You know, how how far into
- 15:15Speaker 1: August are we talking here? First day or two? Okay,
- 15:19Speaker 1: first day or two? Uh yeah, maybe maybe? But man,
- 15:23Speaker 1: there are still some deer that make these these rounds,
- 15:27Speaker 1: and I'm talking from you know where I hunt. Where
- 15:30Speaker 1: they may be there late July, mid July, disappear, maybe
- 15:34Speaker 1: come back in September, disappear, and then they won't show
- 15:39Speaker 1: back up until the ruts. So it's for me, it's
- 15:43Speaker 1: all about knowing what is out there still, like oh dude,
- 15:48Speaker 1: he's back, he's back. But that's just that's just me. Well,
- 15:51Speaker 1: don't you put your cameras out often, like at least
- 15:54Speaker 1: in the past Umber, usually like early July, and then
- 15:56Speaker 1: you do your first check in early August? Is that right? Well?
- 15:59Speaker 1: I got my out in June this year. June one,
- 16:02Speaker 1: I was down there, dropped my kids off at the moms,
- 16:05Speaker 1: had to go do a little work on the farm.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I volunteered to help the landowner do some stuff, and
- 16:12Speaker 1: while I was out there, I did some tree stand
- 16:14Speaker 1: and trail camera stuff. So not this coming weekend, which
- 16:18Speaker 1: is the fourth of July, but it would be the
- 16:21Speaker 1: following weekend. I'm heading back down there, dropping the kids
- 16:24Speaker 1: off at their grandparents, and I'm gonna check some some cameras.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Do you have any I mean, do you have any
- 16:31Speaker 1: other intael from other people or from settings in the winter,
- 16:34Speaker 1: or anything that tells you like you're expecting any certain
- 16:37Speaker 1: bucks to have made it okay? So the only thing
- 16:41Speaker 1: that gives me a you know there, there's there's obvious
- 16:45Speaker 1: there's some obvious ones, right that if things go well, Yeah,
- 16:50Speaker 1: well every year for fifteen years, he'd be eleven years
- 16:54Speaker 1: old this year. That's insane. But didn't you get a
- 16:57Speaker 1: picture of him last year? Yeah, a couple a couple
- 16:59Speaker 1: of pictures of last year, and he looked healthy. I mean,
- 17:02Speaker 1: he looked old, but he looked healthy. Um and then
- 17:06Speaker 1: obviously gnarly, Charlie. I'd love to see him again. He'd
- 17:11Speaker 1: be like a six or seven year old, probably no
- 17:13Speaker 1: seven year old this year, and then other than that. Uh.
- 17:18Speaker 1: I left a camera out all winter long, all spring long,
- 17:23Speaker 1: you know. So the last time I checked it was
- 17:26Speaker 1: the day before I shot my buck this year, and
- 17:29Speaker 1: then I let it so the entire spring, and it
- 17:32Speaker 1: gave out somewhere about oh, late mid to late April, right,
- 17:37Speaker 1: that's was that on purpose or did you forget about it?
- 17:40Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden one day like, oh man,
- 17:42Speaker 1: there's still that camera there. No. I felt confident in
- 17:46Speaker 1: this spot. It's just real deep in the farm. It's
- 17:47Speaker 1: hard to get to nobody. Nobody goes back there except
- 17:50Speaker 1: the farmers when they plant and harvest. And that's about it. Um.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Because I was gonna say, those are the best surprises.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I love it. I don't forget a camera. And then
- 17:57Speaker 1: all of a sudden I walked and like, I didn't
- 17:59Speaker 1: know this is he yere? Yeah? Yeah, No, I knew
- 18:02Speaker 1: this one was here. I had it marked on on
- 18:04Speaker 1: X right, So I walk up to it, I throw
- 18:08Speaker 1: it in my truck, get back home here check it
- 18:10Speaker 1: and there, oh man, late December, and I'm gonna have
- 18:15Speaker 1: to say that this this buck got displaced during shotgun season,
- 18:21Speaker 1: but I had And then I start looking through my
- 18:24Speaker 1: my pictures right, And I have three pictures of him
- 18:27Speaker 1: coming through the farm on two different trail cameras well,
- 18:30Speaker 1: three pictures on each camera, so a six six total
- 18:33Speaker 1: making this big loop through the farm. And then he
- 18:36Speaker 1: came let's say he he came through one way uh
- 18:43Speaker 1: aft like during the second shotgun season. Three days later,
- 18:46Speaker 1: same trail right back across the creek into the neighboring farm.
- 18:51Speaker 1: And so I think I got one other picture of
- 18:57Speaker 1: him in February and then all of a and I
- 19:00Speaker 1: had this big buck kind of coming through back and
- 19:02Speaker 1: forth kind of on a regular basis, but he had
- 19:05Speaker 1: he had dropped, So I'm not a hundred percent sure
- 19:07Speaker 1: it was him or not. But he's an absolute giant
- 19:12Speaker 1: nine pointer. I think he is with a split G
- 19:14Speaker 1: two just a crazy like he's a he's a giant.
- 19:17Speaker 1: He's won seventy as a nine pointer. Yeah, so, and
- 19:22Speaker 1: I had to I guess at five or older, But
- 19:24Speaker 1: I mean, he's not. He's big. And he came through
- 19:27Speaker 1: the farm one time during the season and then one
- 19:32Speaker 1: time just looks like he had been displaced from a shotgun.
- 19:36Speaker 1: So I think I know where he's living on, what
- 19:37Speaker 1: farm he's coming from. It's just a matter if he's
- 19:40Speaker 1: coming through the property during daylight, which he's never done before. Really,
- 19:46Speaker 1: So okay, well it's it's July when this comes out.
- 19:50Speaker 1: It's the time. It's the season of dreaming. Let's let's
- 19:54Speaker 1: just dream hypothetically. Let's say he rolled through your property
- 19:57Speaker 1: last winner. He liked the looks of it. He really
- 20:00Speaker 1: as if there wasn't another top dog that was going
- 20:02Speaker 1: to steal the best betting area or whatever. He decides
- 20:05Speaker 1: he's going to shift over here and hang out. He's
- 20:07Speaker 1: back for two thousand twenty. He shows back up in September.
- 20:13Speaker 1: You get your first look at him. What does he
- 20:16Speaker 1: look like this year? Dan? If you had to guess,
- 20:18Speaker 1: so this is this is a hypothetical, Yeah, this is hypothetical.
- 20:21Speaker 1: What do you what do you imagine he's going to
- 20:23Speaker 1: look like this year? Because this can be like I say,
- 20:26Speaker 1: I say, be by, be blindly optimistic about it, blindly optimistic.
- 20:32Speaker 1: All right, let's see here, I'm gonna average. I'm gonna
- 20:35Speaker 1: say he's gonna pop into a ten. Because it looked
- 20:38Speaker 1: like he had a little nub on the end of
- 20:40Speaker 1: his uh you know, right between on the four point side.
- 20:44Speaker 1: He had a little nub that looked like it could
- 20:45Speaker 1: have even either been broken or it's gonna pop into something.
- 20:49Speaker 1: So I'm gonna say he's a ten pointer now, Uh,
- 20:52Speaker 1: he's gonna still have the split, maybe a little junk
- 20:54Speaker 1: around his bases. Does the does the ten points include
- 20:58Speaker 1: the split? Or is he like a main frame ten
- 21:00Speaker 1: with main frame ten with extra Sokay, technically the eleven
- 21:03Speaker 1: point and maybe just some small junk, maybe not even
- 21:08Speaker 1: scoreable junk, but more junk on the basis, and he'll
- 21:12Speaker 1: probably be in the eight as a ten. How deep
- 21:16Speaker 1: is that split? It's not very it's not very deep
- 21:20Speaker 1: even it's just well, it may go a little bit
- 21:23Speaker 1: deeper this year, but it's not huge. I mean, he'll
- 21:26Speaker 1: be you know, I would be getting cocky here if
- 21:30Speaker 1: I said it's a deep flat mark. Okay, that's pretty
- 21:34Speaker 1: cool to me, Pretty cool, right, And I just I
- 21:38Speaker 1: just imagine him really like liking to rub cedars. Right,
- 21:41Speaker 1: he's a homebody. He doesn't like to wander off, but
- 21:45Speaker 1: he'll fight for that first hot doll, of course he would.
- 21:49Speaker 1: What about the bases though, I just I imagine if
- 21:52Speaker 1: he's a cedar rubber, he's got to be one of
- 21:53Speaker 1: those coke can bases, right with all that junk and stuff. Right,
- 21:57Speaker 1: you know, Mark, I've never been one to brag about
- 22:00Speaker 1: the deer that I hypothetically create my head, but I'm
- 22:04Speaker 1: I'm guessing him to be just a little bit smaller.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Then you know, he's not gonna have coke cans. He's
- 22:12Speaker 1: gonna have maybe like red Bull bases. That's that's that's
- 22:15Speaker 1: not bad, not bad. I'm gonna assume it's the big
- 22:19Speaker 1: red Bull, not the tiny six ouncers or whatever, the
- 22:22Speaker 1: bigger red Bull cans. And in that case, then yes,
- 22:24Speaker 1: I support that hypothetical bass measurement. Um. I'm excited for
- 22:29Speaker 1: the trail came and pictures of this guy. Yeah. If somehow,
- 22:32Speaker 1: if somehow, you nailed it, I don't know how we
- 22:35Speaker 1: can commemorate it or how we can celebrate it. But
- 22:37Speaker 1: if this buck looks exactly like that, I don't know.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna be floored right right, And uh, I will
- 22:44Speaker 1: defecate myself if I shoot a split. Yeah, oh man,
- 22:51Speaker 1: that's awesome. I love one of my favorite things, just
- 22:54Speaker 1: like driving back and forth, especially when used to do
- 22:57Speaker 1: more like those Ohio trips I used to do so often.
- 22:59Speaker 1: With Ory or Josh. When you're born, it's like midnight
- 23:03Speaker 1: and you're almost home and you're trying to think of
- 23:04Speaker 1: something just to stay awake. We'd always do these hypotheticals
- 23:07Speaker 1: where we would do something like that, like tell me
- 23:08Speaker 1: about your hypothetical bucker, would you rather shoot a drop
- 23:11Speaker 1: time or a split tiner? Would you rather this or this?
- 23:14Speaker 1: And just a stupid conversation like that was just what
- 23:17Speaker 1: you need to get through that long drive. Yeah, I
- 23:20Speaker 1: don't ever, I don't. I don't do the typical verse
- 23:23Speaker 1: non typical thing in my head. You know if I
- 23:27Speaker 1: I don't even know. Like for me, it doesn't matter.
- 23:29Speaker 1: I don't care if they're typical or if they're non typical.
- 23:32Speaker 1: But what I like to do is exactly what we
- 23:34Speaker 1: just did, and that is try to shoot. Try to
- 23:39Speaker 1: figure out what that dear is gonna be like next year.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Like if you say for for me, it would be
- 23:44Speaker 1: all right. So I had a three and a half
- 23:46Speaker 1: year old that I passed, what's he gonna do this year?
- 23:49Speaker 1: Is he just gonna do the same, be the same
- 23:51Speaker 1: and blow up? Because I have that eleven pointer that
- 23:54Speaker 1: in the same tree, uh, in the same area that
- 23:57Speaker 1: I got this big one seventy I have, I now have,
- 24:02Speaker 1: uh that buck, that three year old that I passed, Yeah,
- 24:05Speaker 1: early in the rut, right yeah, right early in the rut.
- 24:08Speaker 1: You know, he came right in and you know I
- 24:11Speaker 1: was filming him straight down with my cell phone, and
- 24:16Speaker 1: I'm imagining what he turns into because he also made
- 24:20Speaker 1: it through the the shotgun season. Well what so I
- 24:24Speaker 1: can't not ask? Now, what's it gonna look like? Oh, jeez, Mark,
- 24:28Speaker 1: We're just gonna ride this horse till it dies. Another
- 24:32Speaker 1: hour of hypothetical, right right, Okay, let's see here, he's
- 24:35Speaker 1: gonna be the exact same tight racked buck with more mass.
- 24:41Speaker 1: He's not gonna be out past his ears. He's gonna
- 24:43Speaker 1: have more mass, and I'm gonna guess he's gonna have
- 24:47Speaker 1: a couple five inch five and a half maybe even
- 24:50Speaker 1: a six inch mass measurement on some of his measurements.
- 24:55Speaker 1: But he's also going to have maybe ten to eleven
- 25:00Speaker 1: inch g twos and then they'll be slowly work their
- 25:02Speaker 1: way down from there. That's a beautiful deer. I love
- 25:05Speaker 1: a titan tall buck like that. Now, you and me,
- 25:10Speaker 1: we've we've said a thousand times on our podcast. It's
- 25:12Speaker 1: not all about the Anglers. That's not what it is,
- 25:15Speaker 1: but it is still cool thing like they're a little
- 25:18Speaker 1: bit about the Anglers. It is cool. They are awesome
- 25:20Speaker 1: critters to watch, and I don't know, you can't help
- 25:23Speaker 1: but be fascinated by them. Um, can I can I
- 25:27Speaker 1: do one? Yeah? Because it's Tran, right, yes, Tran? So
- 25:32Speaker 1: what did Tran look like this year? And what is
- 25:35Speaker 1: he going to look like this year? So? Tran was
- 25:40Speaker 1: just a tight and tall eight pointer. He had really
- 25:42Speaker 1: long G twos and then shorter G three's um and
- 25:46Speaker 1: good brow twns brow times and like five inch brow
- 25:49Speaker 1: times maybe maybe a little more than that on some
- 25:52Speaker 1: of them are on one side. Um. And he had
- 25:55Speaker 1: a little kicker coming off of his left side base
- 25:59Speaker 1: about an inch long. So I'm looking at him right now,
- 26:04Speaker 1: I thought, as you know, I found his match set,
- 26:06Speaker 1: both of them sitting right next to each other in
- 26:08Speaker 1: the cornfield. Um, he's gonna stay a big eight, big
- 26:14Speaker 1: main framemate. His G two is, like I said, are
- 26:17Speaker 1: both like I think I think one was ten and
- 26:19Speaker 1: one was eleven or nine and a half and eleven
- 26:21Speaker 1: something like that. Both of very long. I'm guessing those
- 26:24Speaker 1: are gonna just be foot longers. Twelve or thirteen inch
- 26:27Speaker 1: G two is just daggers. But one of them was
- 26:30Speaker 1: starting to blade out a little bit this year, so
- 26:32Speaker 1: I think they're both gonna get like fully bladed, so
- 26:36Speaker 1: like twelve inch bladed G twos. His G three's are
- 26:40Speaker 1: both gonna get like really respectable, like five or six
- 26:43Speaker 1: inch really good G three's. And then again he's got
- 26:46Speaker 1: these tall brow times that kind of curl out a
- 26:49Speaker 1: little bit, so I'm gonna stay they're just gonna grow
- 26:51Speaker 1: maybe another inch each, so let's say six to seven
- 26:55Speaker 1: inch brow times. But that little sticker on the base,
- 26:58Speaker 1: he's gonna match on the other side, so he's gonna
- 27:00Speaker 1: have these kind of unicorn points from the bases, one
- 27:03Speaker 1: on each side, about two inches long. So if I
- 27:06Speaker 1: were to see this buck for the first time ever,
- 27:08Speaker 1: I might jump to a cliche name like hook or something.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Uh and good, good, good good mass. I say, it's
- 27:18Speaker 1: kind of average mass this past year, and I think
- 27:20Speaker 1: he'll kind of continue with that. So in two thousand twenty,
- 27:23Speaker 1: you know, he was just over last year. Uh, he
- 27:27Speaker 1: looked bigger than that, but that was what he scored
- 27:29Speaker 1: out to be. For whatever that's worth, I'm gonna put
- 27:31Speaker 1: him as like a hundred and forty ish eight pointer
- 27:34Speaker 1: this year, maybe a little bigger than that with those
- 27:37Speaker 1: G two I don't know, Okay, I thought maybe with
- 27:39Speaker 1: your imagination, you would have thrown like well maybe late
- 27:43Speaker 1: in the season. He was wounded and it's gonna cause
- 27:46Speaker 1: him to grow a twelve inch drop time. See, I
- 27:50Speaker 1: thought I was. I thought I was pushing my luck
- 27:52Speaker 1: with the bladed G two. So I don't know, man,
- 27:56Speaker 1: if that if a buck like that is running around,
- 27:58Speaker 1: that's gonna be enough to make me lose my mind.
- 28:01Speaker 1: So I'm excited. I'm excited to see these summer trail
- 28:05Speaker 1: camera pictures. And and the cool thing is that the
- 28:07Speaker 1: property that that buck is on has beans again on it,
- 28:10Speaker 1: and it has had beans on it it usually, you know,
- 28:13Speaker 1: usually flip flops. But last year because of the wonky spring,
- 28:19Speaker 1: you know, how, what was it really dry? I think,
- 28:21Speaker 1: why was it everything gotten so late? I'm trying to
- 28:23Speaker 1: remember it was it was drought? Right, Yeah, I think
- 28:27Speaker 1: there was a two wet Why can't I remember this?
- 28:30Speaker 1: You mean last year? Yeah? Last year? Remember all that
- 28:33Speaker 1: no one got their crops in on time and everything
- 28:34Speaker 1: was all messed up. I think it was. I think
- 28:36Speaker 1: it was July. We went through a kind of a drought,
- 28:39Speaker 1: and then September in October got wet. Ye. This shows
- 28:44Speaker 1: you how much mental damage I've gotten over the years.
- 28:47Speaker 1: The kids point being, they didn't plant the fields like
- 28:51Speaker 1: they usually do last year, so they actually split the
- 28:53Speaker 1: farm up. Half the farm was corn, half the farm
- 28:55Speaker 1: was beans instead of the whole thing. So this would
- 28:59Speaker 1: be my third year in a row now with beans
- 29:02Speaker 1: on some portion of the farm, which just makes for
- 29:04Speaker 1: that really cool summer viewing. So I'm hoping I'll get
- 29:08Speaker 1: my third summer in earrow that I can watch him,
- 29:09Speaker 1: which is just a lot of fun to be able
- 29:11Speaker 1: to do that, and uh, you know how that is.
- 29:13Speaker 1: That's that's just a fun thing nest time here. Yeah, absolutely, man,
- 29:18Speaker 1: I'm just uh, it's the trail camera thing, right, I mean,
- 29:23Speaker 1: for me, this year is going to be about trail
- 29:26Speaker 1: cameras and and and basically just sitting and waiting because
- 29:31Speaker 1: if I get a if I get a summer pick
- 29:35Speaker 1: of Gnarlie Charlie, it's gonna dictate a lot of what
- 29:40Speaker 1: I do. I'm gonna be able to cut off the
- 29:43Speaker 1: farm in half. I'm probably going to ignore it, and
- 29:46Speaker 1: then I'm going to just focus on the routes that
- 29:50Speaker 1: he's been running for the past couple of years and
- 29:53Speaker 1: put myself in the best possible position for him. Okay,
- 29:57Speaker 1: so you're you you believe that the intel you got
- 30:00Speaker 1: last year. I know, last summer we had a podcast
- 30:03Speaker 1: just like this, almost the exact same time when you
- 30:05Speaker 1: said you were creating your Dan Johnson points on a map,
- 30:08Speaker 1: connect the dots between the trail cameras strategy, and you
- 30:12Speaker 1: did that. You crossed off half the farm and then
- 30:14Speaker 1: last fall you started hunting that zone and then you
- 30:16Speaker 1: had your first sighting of him. Um, that takes us
- 30:19Speaker 1: to now this year. So if you get the confirmation
- 30:22Speaker 1: he's alive, he made it, then you cross off that
- 30:25Speaker 1: map again the part that he wasn't on. But what different, like,
- 30:29Speaker 1: how have you tightened the news anymore since last November
- 30:31Speaker 1: when you saw him? Are you gonna do like the
- 30:34Speaker 1: circle of cameras in the area and keep on adjusting
- 30:36Speaker 1: or what they're So what I'll what I'll do is
- 30:41Speaker 1: I will cut the farm in half, really focus on
- 30:44Speaker 1: you know, because I put more cameras in that area
- 30:48Speaker 1: this year, So I have more intel this this past
- 30:52Speaker 1: year on him than I did the previous year. So
- 30:56Speaker 1: it's just more of the routes that he's taken king
- 31:00Speaker 1: and I'm putting myself in in just continuing to shrink
- 31:04Speaker 1: down that area and hopes hopefully find the dough group
- 31:08Speaker 1: that's working its way through the area and pulls him through.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Or I still don't think he's betting on my property
- 31:16Speaker 1: that I have access to. I think he's coming from
- 31:19Speaker 1: a different property, and but it's really close, it's really close.
- 31:24Speaker 1: I just have to try to find where he's coming,
- 31:28Speaker 1: you know. I think he's traveling a long way in
- 31:31Speaker 1: a in a day, going from where he feels comfortable
- 31:35Speaker 1: in in his betting area on a different farm, coming
- 31:38Speaker 1: through the properties that I have access to and making
- 31:42Speaker 1: it like being nocturnal there, and then kind of coming
- 31:45Speaker 1: working his way back. Is is what I'm thinking he's doing,
- 31:49Speaker 1: or what he'll do is he'll come through for like
- 31:53Speaker 1: a three day cycle. He'll work the farm for three
- 31:57Speaker 1: days and then two days maybe and then go back.
- 32:01Speaker 1: So is there anything you can do right now or
- 32:03Speaker 1: you know, over the next two months to prepare for that,
- 32:06Speaker 1: like are you going to I don't know. Are you
- 32:09Speaker 1: doing anything different with your summer trail cameras that you
- 32:11Speaker 1: used than you usually do to confirm his presence or
- 32:13Speaker 1: is it kind of the standard approach do you take? Yeah,
- 32:16Speaker 1: it's a standard approach, because, like I've said a million times,
- 32:20Speaker 1: the September shift hits and things just shut off, right,
- 32:25Speaker 1: and then it isn't until so I guess the not
- 32:29Speaker 1: last year, but the previous two years he didn't show
- 32:33Speaker 1: up in the farm until late October. Well, this year,
- 32:38Speaker 1: I added a couple of trail cameras, right, so I
- 32:41Speaker 1: don't I don't have any intel until I get a
- 32:45Speaker 1: trail camera picture of him and then so so the
- 32:50Speaker 1: additional trail cameras that I added caught him early October,
- 32:54Speaker 1: like October three, middle of the night, October broad daylight,
- 33:01Speaker 1: middle of the day, so I think he got bumped, right,
- 33:04Speaker 1: and and then he started making his rounds late October,
- 33:12Speaker 1: so he's around And the only the only reason I
- 33:16Speaker 1: think that one was a daylight is because I don't
- 33:19Speaker 1: know farmer farming activities or you know, a dog running
- 33:23Speaker 1: through the woods or somebody else you know running through
- 33:25Speaker 1: the woods. Don't know, but Yeah, have you have you
- 33:31Speaker 1: considered trying to see him in the summer in the
- 33:33Speaker 1: evenings at all, to see confirmed presents like glassing on
- 33:36Speaker 1: your property, your neighboring properties or anything like that. Yeah,
- 33:39Speaker 1: it's just this year it's tough because I would have
- 33:43Speaker 1: to go through a corn field to get to the
- 33:45Speaker 1: bean field, and I really don't want to bump him.
- 33:48Speaker 1: And if what I'm thinking is right, if I'm thinking
- 33:53Speaker 1: he's coming off of another property, he's not getting to
- 33:55Speaker 1: the bean field until after dark anyway, gotcha? So yeah,
- 34:02Speaker 1: what about you? Have you been thinking about strategy with
- 34:06Speaker 1: with Tran? I have, Um, I think my my dilemma
- 34:11Speaker 1: with that one is there's two things. I've like, two
- 34:15Speaker 1: competing pressures. I've got one thing being that there's an
- 34:22Speaker 1: increasing number of people that I know that are hunting
- 34:26Speaker 1: that deer I guess, or the deer in the area,
- 34:29Speaker 1: like the deer I could hunt, are also now on
- 34:32Speaker 1: the radar of other people who I'm hearing from, who
- 34:35Speaker 1: are also like serious hunters. So there's just more competition
- 34:39Speaker 1: from people that kind of know what they're doing. And
- 34:42Speaker 1: maybe that was happening before and I just didn't know it,
- 34:44Speaker 1: But now that I know it. There's this new sense
- 34:45Speaker 1: of crap. If I don't get them such and such,
- 34:48Speaker 1: will you know? Um. So that's telling me hunt earlier,
- 34:52Speaker 1: take it, try to try to get it done sooner
- 34:54Speaker 1: than later. Um. But then on the other side, I
- 34:59Speaker 1: have you know, last year's observations and trail camera datat
- 35:03Speaker 1: which other than opening day, I didn't get any daylight
- 35:07Speaker 1: pictures or sightings of him all the way until Halloween.
- 35:10Speaker 1: So I got no daylight confirmation with him all through
- 35:13Speaker 1: October UM. The year previous to that, I did have
- 35:16Speaker 1: October daylight movement. Last year no October movement, and then
- 35:20Speaker 1: once Halloween hit though, he was very active for um
- 35:24Speaker 1: most of November and then a little bit in December two.
- 35:27Speaker 1: So that tells me play it safe, wait till late October,
- 35:31Speaker 1: and then it hit it hard then. On the flip side, though,
- 35:36Speaker 1: another reason why I should maybe be more aggressive early
- 35:39Speaker 1: is that I've got a really packed slate of back
- 35:42Speaker 1: forty hunts that I'm going to be you know, on
- 35:45Speaker 1: that property for that's gonna keep me from the tram
- 35:49Speaker 1: property for a lot of the good stuff in November.
- 35:51Speaker 1: So so that said, I'm a little bit up in
- 35:56Speaker 1: the air, but I'm probably gonna be probably gonna be
- 36:00Speaker 1: more aggressive. Um. I'm gonna take the stab early, and
- 36:05Speaker 1: then I'm going to probably push a little bit more
- 36:09Speaker 1: here and there in October when the when the conditions
- 36:12Speaker 1: are I think the one thing like, I've started hunting
- 36:14Speaker 1: a little bit more in mid October than I used
- 36:16Speaker 1: to for a while early on there UM, but was
- 36:20Speaker 1: pretty careful. Again we you know the story listeners in
- 36:24Speaker 1: the story of this particular property small a lot of fields.
- 36:27Speaker 1: I just can't get into too much of the betting areas.
- 36:29Speaker 1: But there's a couple of spots that I think I
- 36:30Speaker 1: can push in a little further than I used to.
- 36:32Speaker 1: It might just be thirty yards further in forty yards
- 36:36Speaker 1: further in UM, but I started to get a little
- 36:40Speaker 1: more confidence in my ability to do that without spooking him.
- 36:43Speaker 1: I've confirmed one or two other spots that I'm pretty
- 36:46Speaker 1: sure there are bucks betted um deeper in the core
- 36:49Speaker 1: of one of these locations where I was worried that
- 36:51Speaker 1: want to be some of them might be a little
- 36:52Speaker 1: bit closer to the edge that would keep me from
- 36:54Speaker 1: getting there safely. I think with some scouting I did
- 36:57Speaker 1: this winter, I found two buck beds that would very
- 37:00Speaker 1: well be his on occasion, um that are on the
- 37:03Speaker 1: property can hunt. I know he spends a lot of
- 37:05Speaker 1: time in the neighbors, but he must be on mind
- 37:08Speaker 1: some of the time. And I think I found one
- 37:10Speaker 1: of those spots. Possibly, um so I might take a
- 37:13Speaker 1: stab in there, and I don't know. I'm I'm a
- 37:17Speaker 1: little less paranoid than I used to be about taking
- 37:19Speaker 1: a swing, you know, a couple of times in October
- 37:23Speaker 1: like that and go for it and may blow it up.
- 37:25Speaker 1: But I think I've been coming back to both what
- 37:27Speaker 1: I've seen and a lot of other people tell you
- 37:29Speaker 1: is that these mature bucks, they get big and mature
- 37:32Speaker 1: for a reason. They found a spot they feel safe.
- 37:35Speaker 1: If you don't bug him over and over and over,
- 37:39Speaker 1: you know, you can get away with maybe one of
- 37:42Speaker 1: those aggressive moves every once in a while. So right,
- 37:45Speaker 1: I don't know. It's a pretty vague way of describing it,
- 37:47Speaker 1: because I'm still on shore. I don't have like a
- 37:50Speaker 1: annual pattern that is going to be like, oh, definitely
- 37:53Speaker 1: gotta do that. You know, in two thousand eighteen, I
- 37:58Speaker 1: got daily activity of him, and in October I think,
- 38:02Speaker 1: like this fourteen there was a cold front the hit.
- 38:05Speaker 1: So I tried going and back in around that time
- 38:07Speaker 1: period this year, didn't see him, didn't get a daily
- 38:10Speaker 1: pictures of him or anything. Um, so there's not anything
- 38:13Speaker 1: that's super solid like that. I'm gonna be working on.
- 38:15Speaker 1: It's gonna be more so make some adjustments in the fly,
- 38:20Speaker 1: be more mobile. I'm not adding any more permanent sets anymore.
- 38:24Speaker 1: I'm just gonna run and go in my saddle. Uh,
- 38:27Speaker 1: just trying to get more quiet, more efficient with that
- 38:30Speaker 1: so I can move in and out and just kind
- 38:32Speaker 1: of get better and all those little things. That's another
- 38:34Speaker 1: thing I'm trying to improve on this year. But um,
- 38:38Speaker 1: what about his routine compared to what holy Field was doing?
- 38:45Speaker 1: Any similarities? Very similar, very similar. Yeah, There's there's this
- 38:49Speaker 1: neighboring property that his is tough to get into for
- 38:53Speaker 1: the person that hunts over there, and this section that
- 38:57Speaker 1: they get into just like lots and lots of thick brush.
- 38:59Speaker 1: It's there's always a good buck the beds in there.
- 39:02Speaker 1: And so it was holy Field for a number of years.
- 39:03Speaker 1: And I could see him in there because from my
- 39:05Speaker 1: seat I could see into that stuff. But I just
- 39:07Speaker 1: can't hunt it. And so holy Field kind of come
- 39:09Speaker 1: in and out of that, and every once in a
- 39:11Speaker 1: while he'd bumped over into my stuff. Every once in a
- 39:13Speaker 1: a while he'd come passed through a bedding ear that
- 39:15Speaker 1: is on my stuff. And once holy Field disappeared that
- 39:18Speaker 1: you know that very next year, Tran was there, and
- 39:21Speaker 1: now last year and the year before basically doing the
- 39:23Speaker 1: same thing. So I've seen him kind of moving it out,
- 39:26Speaker 1: and you know the times. It's interesting. The closest I
- 39:29Speaker 1: ever came. Let me think about this. I passed on
- 39:34Speaker 1: holy Field once and that was the very closest I
- 39:37Speaker 1: could have come to shoot h him, I guess. But
- 39:39Speaker 1: the second closest. Let me make sure I don't have
- 39:43Speaker 1: this stuff wrong. With a bow, I was closer to
- 39:46Speaker 1: holy Field with a bow. Well you know the story.
- 39:49Speaker 1: This is the time that was. It was the rout.
- 39:51Speaker 1: It was midday and I was on your phone, was
- 39:55Speaker 1: reading a book on my phone because I was bored,
- 39:57Speaker 1: and then I hear a snap and I turned around
- 39:58Speaker 1: holy Field standing it is behind me, so from that
- 40:02Speaker 1: exact same tree, so that I could have killed holy
- 40:05Speaker 1: Field from that tree if I was paying attention, from
- 40:07Speaker 1: that exact same tree as the closest I came to
- 40:09Speaker 1: Tran as well in the rut. Tran was with a
- 40:13Speaker 1: dough in this little thicket right next to that tree.
- 40:15Speaker 1: And I couldn't get a shot at him. Um. So,
- 40:18Speaker 1: so i'm I'm I'm identifying a couple of these weak
- 40:21Speaker 1: spots where they're gonna come in every once a while
- 40:23Speaker 1: during the rut. But there's no like clear cut he's
- 40:27Speaker 1: going to come from that bending here and come in
- 40:28Speaker 1: to mind every other day or once a week or
- 40:31Speaker 1: every night or something like that. It's it's much more random,
- 40:35Speaker 1: but it's I know they're gonna they're gonna bump over
- 40:36Speaker 1: every once in a while. But despite all my studying,
- 40:40Speaker 1: despite all my long distance observation, I've yet to be
- 40:43Speaker 1: able to pin it down to you know, I guarantee
- 40:46Speaker 1: the're gonna come out this way. I think that that's
- 40:48Speaker 1: gonna happen for sure. So it's more so of how
- 40:50Speaker 1: do you get into those weak spots enough times without
- 40:54Speaker 1: blowing things up so that the one out of four
- 40:57Speaker 1: times that he comes through, you're there and you have
- 40:59Speaker 1: him stuff. Yeah, Um, I don't know. It's kind of
- 41:03Speaker 1: a weird spot to hunt. I'm putting more of my
- 41:04Speaker 1: eggs in the basket during the rut there, I think
- 41:06Speaker 1: than I used to because like last year, you know
- 41:09Speaker 1: we talked about I passed on several really nice bucks
- 41:13Speaker 1: back in those betting ears. Like I figured out the
- 41:15Speaker 1: rut there. Now you hunt these back betting ears that
- 41:17Speaker 1: are hard to get to, but you just get in
- 41:19Speaker 1: there super early and stay all day, and these bucks
- 41:21Speaker 1: are going to check those. Um. So if if I
- 41:25Speaker 1: can make it to that, you know, early November, and
- 41:27Speaker 1: I still haven't killed him, that's a pretty good way.
- 41:29Speaker 1: If I put in my time, they're gonna come cruising
- 41:31Speaker 1: through there. Um I could have killed that big ten
- 41:34Speaker 1: pointer a couple of times. It could have killed a
- 41:36Speaker 1: big nine back there a couple of times last year.
- 41:37Speaker 1: So I don't know. It's a limiting little spot, but
- 41:42Speaker 1: there's opportunities. So we'll see. I'm sure it'll be more
- 41:46Speaker 1: of the same frustrating stories. I saw him, couldn't get
- 41:49Speaker 1: a shot. I saw him, couldn't get a shot, And
- 41:50Speaker 1: we'll talk about it for three months and then be
- 41:53Speaker 1: stuck talking about the same deer for five years. Yeah.
- 41:56Speaker 1: And I think the cool thing is is I'm I'm
- 41:58Speaker 1: doing something similar right have like two tree stands right
- 42:03Speaker 1: now pre hung, and I think that's the only only
- 42:06Speaker 1: pre hanging I'm gonna do. Excuse me three And I say,
- 42:09Speaker 1: I say too, because one is not gonna be where
- 42:14Speaker 1: I hunt probably this year. If I'll tell you this,
- 42:17Speaker 1: if Gnarly is alive, I probably won't even hunt that stand.
- 42:22Speaker 1: But if he is alive, I have to. One is
- 42:27Speaker 1: already up in a bedding area. I cannot wait to
- 42:31Speaker 1: get in there for the first time. There was a
- 42:33Speaker 1: mature buck in there the first time I went in
- 42:36Speaker 1: and hunted it, and then and then I have a
- 42:40Speaker 1: pinch point stand set up. But other than that, it's
- 42:43Speaker 1: gonna be different tree every day. I just know it.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Trying to find out where this guy's coming in and out.
- 42:48Speaker 1: And uh, I just I hope at all. I hope.
- 42:52Speaker 1: I hope all the data stays true and I can
- 42:56Speaker 1: continue to you know, and I and I have these encounters,
- 43:00Speaker 1: because what was it, no encounters with him the first
- 43:05Speaker 1: two years, for the first three years. Last this year,
- 43:11Speaker 1: excuse me, for first two years this year had encounter.
- 43:14Speaker 1: He's on he was on like this little spur ridge
- 43:16Speaker 1: when I saw him. And so I'm gonna be over
- 43:20Speaker 1: there more this year on specific wins, and Uh, that's
- 43:23Speaker 1: the goal, man, is just to keep tightening the news. Now,
- 43:27Speaker 1: it's a lot of fun. I love like having the spot,
- 43:29Speaker 1: you know, and a buck you know, and you're rumaging
- 43:32Speaker 1: through all the dead and tightening the news and trying
- 43:34Speaker 1: to figure it all out. But the other thing that's
- 43:36Speaker 1: a lot of fun is trying to find out and
- 43:38Speaker 1: learn a brand new area. Uh. And I saw you
- 43:41Speaker 1: were doing a bunch of scouting in public Land recently,
- 43:43Speaker 1: talking about rubber bottom stuff and trying to figure out
- 43:46Speaker 1: this new zone. What was the story over there? Well, um,
- 43:53Speaker 1: it was awesome. I mean I love getting out there
- 43:55Speaker 1: and scouting. I loved putting in the work. But right
- 43:58Speaker 1: now it's underwater. So you know, how optimistic am I
- 44:03Speaker 1: that this area is going to recover? You know closer
- 44:06Speaker 1: to October is gonna be interesting. But I went back there,
- 44:12Speaker 1: I did some scouting, and I had a bit of
- 44:14Speaker 1: a dilemma. Right. I get out there and I'm on
- 44:18Speaker 1: I am on uh public ground, and I'm way back
- 44:23Speaker 1: in there. I mean I'm like two miles back from
- 44:26Speaker 1: the parking lot, and you know, I'm I'm finding all
- 44:30Speaker 1: this great sign, finding these trails where it's like high
- 44:34Speaker 1: ground in between two marshes, right, these these little bottlenecks,
- 44:38Speaker 1: marketing my spot, following the river and just doing all
- 44:42Speaker 1: this awesome scouting. And then I come up against some tree.
- 44:45Speaker 1: I find some tree stands, which it's illegal, and Iowa
- 44:48Speaker 1: to have tree stands on public all year round, right,
- 44:52Speaker 1: you have you can only put them up like five
- 44:54Speaker 1: or seven days before the season starts, and you can
- 44:57Speaker 1: you have to have them down I think thirty days
- 44:59Speaker 1: after for the season's over or something like that, which
- 45:04Speaker 1: I'm not gonna wrap that out right, I'm not gonna
- 45:06Speaker 1: go and and turn that in. You know, I guess
- 45:10Speaker 1: I'm not that guy. But the guy, the guy that
- 45:14Speaker 1: had since planted a food plot. So he's he's coming
- 45:17Speaker 1: back this far on the boat he is, that's how
- 45:22Speaker 1: he's accessing this tree stand, and he's got a trail
- 45:25Speaker 1: camera there and he's got a food plot. Now on
- 45:30Speaker 1: public land. This person planted a food plot. And you're
- 45:33Speaker 1: sure this is public land? No, sure it's public land.
- 45:40Speaker 1: And I said, okay, I'm just gonna keep walking, not
- 45:44Speaker 1: gonna bother with this. But it just kept stewing in
- 45:46Speaker 1: my head, like this dude came in and he planted
- 45:50Speaker 1: a food plot on public land. Like, I can't do that, dude,
- 45:55Speaker 1: right guaranteed if this guy is crazy enough about white
- 45:59Speaker 1: tip else to take a boat into this public land,
- 46:02Speaker 1: to have a trail camera running this summer and to
- 46:04Speaker 1: have a food plot to publicly or to plant a
- 46:06Speaker 1: food plant in public land. You know, he listens to
- 46:09Speaker 1: this podcast. Yeah, so he's listening right now. So what
- 46:11Speaker 1: do you want to tell him? Well, uh, don't cheat, sorry, dude,
- 46:17Speaker 1: don't Yeah, don't cheat. And so I had this dilemma, right,
- 46:21Speaker 1: I was like, should I turn this guy in? And
- 46:23Speaker 1: I posted a questionnaire on Instagram, you know, or a pole,
- 46:27Speaker 1: you know, should I turn him in? Should I turn
- 46:28Speaker 1: him in? Seventy people said I should turn him in
- 46:31Speaker 1: and said I should just ignore it. And there was
- 46:36Speaker 1: like six hundred people who did that. So whatever, whatever
- 46:41Speaker 1: those numbers are. You know, sevent thought I should turn
- 46:48Speaker 1: it in. The other seventy or the other said I
- 46:53Speaker 1: should just ignore it and keep walking. Here's the other.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Here's the other alternative, Dan, Yeah, just hunt the ship
- 46:59Speaker 1: out of it. Yeah yeah, and that's and well hey,
- 47:03Speaker 1: and that's the thing, like so yeah, so that's so
- 47:08Speaker 1: I go. I don't have a boat, though, so I
- 47:10Speaker 1: can't access that the same way that he is. However,
- 47:14Speaker 1: so I I go to I go to the dn
- 47:17Speaker 1: R and I eventually point out a map. I said,
- 47:20Speaker 1: there is a food plot right here. They don't they
- 47:24Speaker 1: don't like spray it. They're not gonna go and spray it.
- 47:28Speaker 1: And I said, so, is that like area legal to
- 47:31Speaker 1: hunt now or do I do I have to stay
- 47:33Speaker 1: away from that? And he never, he didn't really give
- 47:35Speaker 1: me an answer. So I'm gonna follow up. Well, right now,
- 47:39Speaker 1: it's all underwater. It will all die. It's gonna die,
- 47:42Speaker 1: So it's not a big deal. I mean, it's all
- 47:45Speaker 1: just so I I hunt the All this public land
- 47:49Speaker 1: is basically high water runoff area. So when they like
- 47:54Speaker 1: right now, they'll raise the damn so there could be
- 47:58Speaker 1: more boating traffic for the holiday weekends. And then after
- 48:01Speaker 1: that they'll lower it down a little bit and so
- 48:05Speaker 1: then that water should recede. But I don't know, man,
- 48:10Speaker 1: I just felt, you know, I felt like a rat.
- 48:13Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, I don't give
- 48:14Speaker 1: a ship. So hey, man, I get it. I totally
- 48:18Speaker 1: get it. It's frustrating when you see people abuse the
- 48:21Speaker 1: You know, now that's a kind of weird thing because
- 48:23Speaker 1: you could someone could say he's trying to improve it,
- 48:26Speaker 1: but he's improving it like a selfish way. Yeah, I
- 48:29Speaker 1: mean it was. It was a setup. It wasn't like
- 48:34Speaker 1: a plot. And in on this public land, the d
- 48:39Speaker 1: n R plants food for these deers. So there's corn fields,
- 48:44Speaker 1: there's bean fields, there's alfalpha fields. I mean they these
- 48:49Speaker 1: these deer have enough to eat. So I probably would
- 48:53Speaker 1: have walked right by if I didn't stop and see
- 48:57Speaker 1: this guy's tree stand. I mean it was this luscious
- 48:59Speaker 1: clover plot about half an acre of it just right,
- 49:05Speaker 1: maybe a little smaller than half acre. So here's the question.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Was it a good setup? Like did he set up
- 49:10Speaker 1: on a well did you think about wind? And it
- 49:12Speaker 1: sounds like decent access it was taking the boat. But
- 49:15Speaker 1: was it approved? Is it Dan Johnson approved as far
- 49:17Speaker 1: as far as a smart set, Well, I mean it
- 49:20Speaker 1: would let's let's just say what he did was legal.
- 49:23Speaker 1: I would I would have given it a shot on
- 49:26Speaker 1: a northwest wind that he set up kind of right
- 49:30Speaker 1: on the curve of the river, so his wind would
- 49:32Speaker 1: have been blowing right into the river and following it down,
- 49:36Speaker 1: so it would have turned out you know, it would
- 49:38Speaker 1: have turned out internet Like I don't know, dear. There
- 49:41Speaker 1: was a heavy trail near it. I mean it was
- 49:44Speaker 1: it was a decent spot and with that clover there,
- 49:48Speaker 1: I can just see it's sucking deer in man. Yeah.
- 49:54Speaker 1: He he probably listens to nine Finger chronicles too. Yeah,
- 49:57Speaker 1: he had this whole plan in place. I'm gonna get
- 50:00Speaker 1: my house burnt down now or graffiti rat uh huh um.
- 50:07Speaker 1: I love that river bottom stuff though. It's that is
- 50:09Speaker 1: an awesome country. Yeah, that's where I cut my teeth
- 50:12Speaker 1: on on hunting. Man. Everything I did back in the
- 50:15Speaker 1: day was river bottom ground learning how to hunt. Uh,
- 50:19Speaker 1: not necessarily river bottom, but you know like riverse system,
- 50:24Speaker 1: creec system, flat land. Uh been between the egg and
- 50:28Speaker 1: in the waterway and that's where that's that's where I
- 50:31Speaker 1: did a lot of my hunting growing up until I
- 50:34Speaker 1: started moving up into the eggs and the finger. But
- 50:37Speaker 1: you know, that's where I cut my teeth turkey hunting,
- 50:39Speaker 1: That's where I cut my teeth deer hunting and uh,
- 50:43Speaker 1: being able to go back and scout this public land
- 50:46Speaker 1: and put a little bit of effort into it. Uh,
- 50:49Speaker 1: it was really fun. I believe that I wanted to
- 50:52Speaker 1: go do some of that stuff. The other day, I've
- 50:54Speaker 1: got an Idaho white Tail tag here, and I've found
- 50:58Speaker 1: a bunch of public land on on X and I
- 51:00Speaker 1: went and did my first year drive out here and
- 51:03Speaker 1: had my heart broken. Just like everything that looked possible
- 51:08Speaker 1: on the map ended up being inaccessible or just way
- 51:14Speaker 1: less appealing than I thought I was going to look,
- 51:16Speaker 1: I saw almost no dear. There was not a single
- 51:19Speaker 1: spot I went to that I circled as a spot
- 51:22Speaker 1: I would come back to an hunt. Um. So I'm
- 51:26Speaker 1: I'm right now without a single plan for my Idaho
- 51:31Speaker 1: tag right now. And you didn't You didn't get a
- 51:34Speaker 1: montage in a tag this year? Yeah, I didn't draw,
- 51:37Speaker 1: That's correct, Okay, So yeah, some brand new state, brand
- 51:41Speaker 1: new area have no real intel at all other than
- 51:46Speaker 1: a few little Oh yeah, there's white tails out there, um,
- 51:49Speaker 1: and a couple of pictures of people that have shot
- 51:51Speaker 1: some that kind of prove it. So over these next
- 51:54Speaker 1: few weeks, I've got to do some serious driving. Um.
- 51:57Speaker 1: There's an area about an hour hour and a half
- 52:01Speaker 1: from where I'm at that's supposed to be pretty good
- 52:04Speaker 1: where it seems to be a lot of public land. Um,
- 52:07Speaker 1: but that's you know, it's kind of hike. I would
- 52:09Speaker 1: have been nicer to have a place close to where
- 52:11Speaker 1: I am, but a little disappointed by that we're speaking of.
- 52:15Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't mean what we haven't We
- 52:16Speaker 1: haven't really talked about this. But I did a thing, Dan, Um.
- 52:21Speaker 1: I did a thing which is why I'm hunting white
- 52:22Speaker 1: tails in Idaho, which is we had to upgrade from
- 52:27Speaker 1: a camper. We couldn't do the whole sleeping in a
- 52:30Speaker 1: tent camper with two kids and two dogs. Um, So
- 52:35Speaker 1: I bought a little cabin in Idaho. Nice. So yeah,
- 52:41Speaker 1: we've got like a permanent base of operations out here now.
- 52:44Speaker 1: Um So yeah, that's why I'm gonna try to figure
- 52:47Speaker 1: out this idahole white tail thing, because it would be
- 52:49Speaker 1: really nice to have something close to we're at here. Um,
- 52:52Speaker 1: I got an Elk tex. I'm gonna try to explore
- 52:55Speaker 1: what the Elk opportunities are here. But if the white
- 52:58Speaker 1: tail thing doesn't pan out, I'm selling this piece of
- 53:01Speaker 1: ship real fast. I thought you would be uh buying
- 53:09Speaker 1: something in Montana. Well, I mean, for a long time
- 53:13Speaker 1: we were trying. I've been gosh, probably I don't know,
- 53:16Speaker 1: three four years now. We've been looking, looking and looking
- 53:20Speaker 1: and looking. That the trick is that we need something
- 53:23Speaker 1: really cheap because I, you know, we have to we
- 53:25Speaker 1: have our house in Michigan. So I needed something that
- 53:28Speaker 1: was affordable but also would be big enough to fit
- 53:32Speaker 1: the family. And the biggest thing for me was I
- 53:35Speaker 1: wanted like good acts. If I was going to buy
- 53:37Speaker 1: a place out here, I didn't want to be in town.
- 53:38Speaker 1: I didn't want to be surrounded by people. Like the
- 53:40Speaker 1: reason why I come out here is because I like
- 53:41Speaker 1: to be away from people. So for years we were
- 53:44Speaker 1: looking at things and it was never, you know, it
- 53:46Speaker 1: was never the right fit. Was that either too expensive
- 53:49Speaker 1: or just wasn't what we wanted. Um. So I figured
- 53:52Speaker 1: there's no rush, might as will just wait, um until
- 53:55Speaker 1: the right thing comes along. And then this past year
- 53:58Speaker 1: we decided, well, maybe we need to expand our search
- 54:00Speaker 1: outside of the Bozeman, Montana area that we're looking because
- 54:03Speaker 1: that's just like crazy crazy expensive, like little tiny things
- 54:06Speaker 1: are just tons of money, um. And I wasn't gonna
- 54:09Speaker 1: buy a tiny, like a tiny tiny thing there that
- 54:14Speaker 1: costs like four times more than my full size house
- 54:17Speaker 1: in Michigan. Um So we thought, all right, well, let's
- 54:20Speaker 1: expand the radius and look at a couple of the
- 54:22Speaker 1: other areas in that like Montana, Wyoming, Idaho zone we
- 54:26Speaker 1: usually go to. And um, long story short, found a
- 54:29Speaker 1: little place that's right on the edge of the National
- 54:32Speaker 1: Forest that's less than two and a half miles from
- 54:35Speaker 1: four different really great trout rivers. Um, I can walk
- 54:39Speaker 1: to the public land. I can. You know? I could
- 54:42Speaker 1: walk forty five miles straight without hitting a paved road
- 54:45Speaker 1: and end up in a national park if I wanted. Um,
- 54:49Speaker 1: so super cool from all that kind of stuff we
- 54:51Speaker 1: like to do out here. So decided take the leap.
- 54:54Speaker 1: I've been saving up for a lot of years to
- 54:55Speaker 1: try to do something like this someday and finally found
- 54:58Speaker 1: something that wasn't going to uh you know, what's gonna
- 55:01Speaker 1: allow us to do with the things we want to do.
- 55:03Speaker 1: So so it's crazy, that's a that's awesome. Well, I'm
- 55:08Speaker 1: glad your wildest dreams have come true. Mark Kenyon, I
- 55:10Speaker 1: appreciate that, Danum. I've been dreaming of poopy diapers and
- 55:15Speaker 1: sitting in my truck and all these things that the
- 55:18Speaker 1: much less glamorous reality of it. But yeah, it's cool,
- 55:22Speaker 1: it's got It's interesting though, because there's there's just there's
- 55:25Speaker 1: a little like living space like your kitchen living area,
- 55:27Speaker 1: and then there's one single bedroom and so the bedroom
- 55:30Speaker 1: is where we're putting our son and then once Colton
- 55:33Speaker 1: is old enough to put both of them in there.
- 55:34Speaker 1: But that means my wife and I have to sleep
- 55:36Speaker 1: in the living room. And we ordered a couch, like
- 55:39Speaker 1: a pull out couch that you could turn into a bed,
- 55:41Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, after we place the order and you
- 55:43Speaker 1: can't cancel the order. It gave us like a back
- 55:45Speaker 1: order notification. So we're not getting it for well, we've
- 55:50Speaker 1: been out here for a month now, we're not gonna
- 55:52Speaker 1: get it for another couple of weeks. So we've been
- 55:54Speaker 1: sleeping on the previous owners two couches for the last
- 55:58Speaker 1: four weeks. Uh, way too to get a pull out bed.
- 56:01Speaker 1: So yeah, you know, you make it work, right, Yeah,
- 56:06Speaker 1: you can make anything work, man, You can make anything work.
- 56:09Speaker 1: So wait, okay, So whitetail Idaho elk Idaho right, whitetail Michigan.
- 56:17Speaker 1: And did you get Iowa this year or not? No? No,
- 56:20Speaker 1: just no Iowa just because there's so much back forty
- 56:23Speaker 1: stuff that I've got to be around for I just
- 56:25Speaker 1: wouldn't be get enough time. I think I'm gonna try
- 56:28Speaker 1: to do a little mid October John, maybe the Nebraska
- 56:31Speaker 1: I still kind of up in the air and that,
- 56:33Speaker 1: but possibly public land hunt somewhere in mid October, and
- 56:37Speaker 1: then um, you know, for I don't know how long
- 56:39Speaker 1: I've been talking about wanting to do this December track
- 56:41Speaker 1: a buck down the snow hunt. I've made no progress
- 56:44Speaker 1: on planning that yet, but I still want to try
- 56:46Speaker 1: to do it. So if you want to come on
- 56:48Speaker 1: to New York or Maine in early December, let me know. Yeah, man,
- 56:52Speaker 1: I've interviewed, uh some people from Maine and New York
- 56:58Speaker 1: and Vermont, and uh, I think I'll just stick with Michigan.
- 57:03Speaker 1: Doesn't that sound cool? Though? Yeah? I mean, yes, that
- 57:07Speaker 1: sounds that sounds awesome. But uh, I don't know. It's
- 57:11Speaker 1: not Iowa, I know, I mean, I why don't I
- 57:14Speaker 1: do it? And why don't you do it in like
- 57:15Speaker 1: North Dakota or yes, or there's cool things out there. Yeah,
- 57:21Speaker 1: I don't know, but it's just like it's this is
- 57:23Speaker 1: the cultural thing. You go out there. It's like the
- 57:25Speaker 1: big woods, lots of snow, follow a big track for
- 57:29Speaker 1: five miles Comorial hillside. There he is. He's got a
- 57:32Speaker 1: dusting of snow on his back. His nose is big
- 57:35Speaker 1: and broad, and you know that that Roman knows. And
- 57:39Speaker 1: he's got like three little nubbins on each antler. Buddy's
- 57:43Speaker 1: a big bodied buck. And that's the hunt I want
- 57:48Speaker 1: right right. I can't get muled. You're out of my
- 57:50Speaker 1: head right now, dude. I'm so jacked about this upcoming hunt.
- 57:54Speaker 1: I mean, we we figured it out the first year,
- 57:57Speaker 1: and if if it's as half as crazy as it
- 58:01Speaker 1: was last year, man, we're in business again. So all
- 58:06Speaker 1: I've been doing is is just tweaking my gear my
- 58:10Speaker 1: gear list. I got some new packs, I got um
- 58:14Speaker 1: uh some more you know, some different equipment. I need
- 58:16Speaker 1: to buy a new pair of boots, uh, a new
- 58:18Speaker 1: water filter. So I'm looking at all that stuff right now,
- 58:21Speaker 1: and then I'm still like in the process of planning out.
- 58:28Speaker 1: I'm thinking that far ahead. Man, So were I met
- 58:33Speaker 1: my bad? Um? Are you giving enough mental time to
- 58:37Speaker 1: Michigan in Yeah? Uh, I'm I'm i gotta come right.
- 58:46Speaker 1: That's not the kind of excitement. I was looking for it. Well,
- 58:50Speaker 1: the shitty thing about this is is that we have
- 58:54Speaker 1: got We've gotten this survey back from the school that says,
- 58:59Speaker 1: you know, here are three options. What is your comfort
- 59:02Speaker 1: level with COVID, you know, with COVID nineteen and you
- 59:06Speaker 1: know how you you know feel that you know your kids,
- 59:11Speaker 1: you know do you feel so? Me personally, I am
- 59:16Speaker 1: okay with my kids going back to school full time,
- 59:19Speaker 1: writing the bus, going back amongst their regularly scheduled programming, right,
- 59:24Speaker 1: But the others, the other uh options were like fifty fifty,
- 59:30Speaker 1: Like your kid goes back a couple of days a week,
- 59:33Speaker 1: and then it's on a rotation, so a day off,
- 59:35Speaker 1: a day on, day off day on whatever, and then
- 59:38Speaker 1: they and then the other days you would be the
- 59:41Speaker 1: parent would be required to run through the curriculum with
- 59:47Speaker 1: them at home. I'm just like, are you kidding me?
- 59:49Speaker 1: I'm number one, I have no patience. Number two, I'm
- 59:52Speaker 1: not a teacher and I'm busy, right, I have other
- 59:55Speaker 1: kids too, Like I got my youngest kid to take
- 59:58Speaker 1: care of, So while I'm doing that, I'm gonna have
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: to put him in front of cartoons or feed him
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: just so he's quiet. And then the other option is
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: full time at home curriculum to start the year out with.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: And I just I just hope that they bring the
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: kids back to school full time or I'm in trouble,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: like me and the wife are are gonna, like from
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: a from a job standpoint in the time we need
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: to give to the jobs we're gonna be, We're gonna
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: kind of be in trouble. So okay, yeah, I hear you.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: But let's look at the silver lining here. Okay, what
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: there's like eleven million white tailed deer hunters in the country,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: give or take Somewhere in that ballpark, there are something
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: like three hundred and what does million total people in
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: the country or something like that. All right, and how
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: many what percentage of that three million do you think
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: our parents I'm gonna say, I don't know, or something
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: like that. Maybe, So you're looking over a hud million
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: parents out there. That's the target audience for the new
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: version of nine Finger Chronicles, which is all about training
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: your kids at home. It's all about teaching your kids
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: at home. So you've got a much bigger pool of
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: potential audience members. Then you're eleven million deer hunters like
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: I do. Just pivot, Just pivot, man, straight pivot, quit talking,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: Quit talking about deer, and start talking about how much
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: of a shitty father. I. Yes, that's exactly what I'm recommending,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: you know, from one friend to another. Try it. Trust Okay,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: I'll do it. Let me just talk to my sponsors
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: and ask them first, Hey, hey, uh you care if
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: I stopped talking about deer hunting? And hey, this uh
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: you know, I just want to say, my name is
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: Dan Johnson. This is the Nine Finger Chronicles, brought to
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: you by Lone Wolf Tree Stands. And on this episode,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about what you can do to keep
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: your child occupied while you're teaching the other child. But first,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: I just don't I don't see that flow. That flow.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: But first, in advertisement from Gerber Baby Foods, I'm telling you,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: is that opportunity? Um? I think. On that note, it's
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: time for our next segment. Dan, what's the next segment?
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Mark call further and Cefo answer, we're doing that again?
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Why not? Let's do it? Uh? That will be very
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: disappointed if he doesn't pick up, because it's such a
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: great surprise last time when he did. Um, So I
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: said question to ask him, yeah, in in second questions.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: If he doesn't answer, we can leave a voicemail. Still, Yeah,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: what county does he live in in Michigan? Do you know?
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: I don't know if I should say that publicly or not.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: I don't know. Honestly, I'm not quite sure. Um, well,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: I'll leave him a message east side, east side of
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Michigan or whatever. You don't. I don't need the I
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: don't need the county. I don't need the county. Yeah,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: it sounds like some kind of authoritative figure. He's in trouble.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: Maybe maybe it's Michigan I R S. Maybe it's the
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: I R S. Just federal government. Could be taxes. I
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: don't know. Let's calm sea violations. That's all possible. Let's see.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Let's see what happens here. This is the thing. This
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: is the thing. Now, let's it's absolutely thing. Is it working?
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I can't hear it ring? All right? Hold on? How
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: cool would it be to have a podcast where all
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: we do is prank call further it's a spinoff that
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: would probably be a lot more successful than this one.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: He already hates you, you you know that? Right? Oh god?
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: All right? I don't know why I can't get this
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: to work, but hang with me here here we go,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: all right? Add are you still there doing? I'm still here?
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: I don't know if it's downing again? Josh you there? Hello? Hello? Hello?
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I don't see anything on my end. Oh it's saying
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: two of three in the call, so it looks like
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: it's ringing, but it's not. He hasn't added. He just
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: texted me and said he's on the phone. What an ass?
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: All right, let's old. We got one alternative. You're still
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: This is the part where if you got to go
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: take a pooper pe, then you go do it and
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: then get comeback. Alright, I got one more opportunity here.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: We're gonna go with the phone number and stuff Skype
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: and he may be on the phone, but we can
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: still leave a voicemail to annoy him. Yeah, I know,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: I love how Okay? Since this is Skype, is it
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: gonna show up as unavailable? I'm not sure about that
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: type of truth. You know they say in broadcasting dead
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: air isn't good? Mark this is this is this isn't audio? Now, dude,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: I I guarantee you you marked this time down on
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: your podcast director with the you d M A can't
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: unable to take your call at the moment. Please leave
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: a message with your name and number, and I'll be
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: sure to return your call as soon as possible. Thank
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: you and have a good day at the tel and
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: please record your message. When you finished recording, you may
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: hang up or press one for more options. Yeah. Mr Hilliard,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: this is Officer Randall with the Michigan Department and Natural Resources,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: and we have a couple of questions we need to
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: ask you about where you were at and what you
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: were doing June nineteen. Excuse me, go ahead and give
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: us a call at you know the number. Uh, call
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: me back. That's dumb. That was dumb. I know I
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: could have done better. I could have done better. Should
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: we just call him until I get it right? He
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: has nine voicemails right right? Oh? Man, I think I
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: think it's probably Um. I I think that's a good
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: spot to wrap it up, Dan, unless you've got any
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: other big summer updates. No, man, I'm just slowly getting jacked.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: I'm slowly getting jacked for October the Mule to ear Hunt,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: the Michigan Hunt in Iowa. Um. Yeah, I've been baking
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: those brownies, getting the brownie points it's good. So what
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: you gotta do this time of year, I'm right there
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: with you, although I've been getting trouble for fishing too much,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: so these these distractions sometimes they're throwing me off the game.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: But yeah, man, let's let's circle back up in a
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: few weeks to talk more about some of the parenting
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: lessons we've we've gained over the last couple of years,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: because since that one, I think when we recorded that one,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: was Knox born yet or was he just about to be.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: I'm not sure. I think it depends on when it
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: was launched or when we recorded it, but I think
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: it was just Macineva, and if it was, he was
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: too young to do anything with anyway. So lots to
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: learn since then. Three kids for you, two kids for me,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: and uh maybe we'll call further back in for that
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: one too. He's got a kid on now and he's
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: got a thing or two. Maybe he's learned over the
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: last few years. So alright, buddy, good stuff. I can't
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: wait to see what the trail camera poll shows you
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: here soon. Keep keep me posted, all right, man, talk
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: to you later. Let's see you alright, And that's gonna
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: do it for us. Today Thanks for tuning in. This
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: is a little change of pace. The last handful of
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: weeks have been pretty serious strategy. Today it was a
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: little bit more of just kicking back, laughing, telling some stories,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: and kind of getting you guys up to speed on
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: how Dan and I are progressing towards the season. So
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: hopefully you still enjoyed this one. We'll be back with
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: some serious how two's coming up soon, and until then,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: thank you so much for listening, and stay wired to hunt.
