- 34:59Speaker 1: Don't make me a GDP of the people who are
- 35:02Speaker 1: afraid of me. Don't make my name a city. Don't
- 35:05Speaker 1: make all the fans of these nations a city. Don't
- 35:07Speaker 1: make your own culture in the West. We will leave
- 35:09Speaker 1: such a run. Today I am Sophie, I make many trips.
- 35:15Speaker 1: I don't cheat those who don't open their doors. I
- 35:18Speaker 1: don't cheat those who don't pay their debts. I don't
- 35:20Speaker 1: make hip-hop by leaving the bad kindy. I don't make
- 35:24Speaker 1: poppy in the coming album. I don't make topi by
- 35:27Speaker 1: making wild-wide greenery. I don't make boti when I sell
- 35:31Speaker 1: on my doob. I don't make aloti by doing little
- 35:33Speaker 1: by little. I don't make paloti on my moon.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Chal dikhao ye saaki kinna botla mein tam
- 36:04Speaker 1: Ja chupaani hi legi kyunki wo kala mein tam Mere
- 36:07Speaker 1: kalle mein se jinna ko na tohtla mein tam Rek
- 36:10Speaker 1: lo bali dikhega kinna lo kala mein tam Dikhao ye
- 36:14Speaker 1: saaki kinna botla mein tam Ja chupaani hi legi kyunki
- 36:17Speaker 1: wo kala mein tam Mere kalle mein se jinna ko
- 36:20Speaker 1: na tohtla mein tam Globally, you'll see how popular the
- 36:24Speaker 1: people are.
- 36:25Speaker 4: I'll make you a top writer today. I'll turn you
- 36:27Speaker 4: into a rap star.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I'll turn you into a hip-hop star. I'll turn you
- 36:31Speaker 1: into a bronze mirror.
- 36:32Speaker 4: I'll turn you into a goat-rapper. I'll turn you into
- 36:34Speaker 4: a thotty.
- 36:35Speaker 7: I'll turn you into a culture-bad-bad-jeans-son. I'll turn you into
- 36:38Speaker 7: a door-danger.
- 36:38Speaker 4: I'll turn you into a rapper.
- 36:40Speaker 7: I'll turn you into an OT.
- 36:41Speaker 4: I'll turn you into a 16-year-old.
- 36:43Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 36:59Speaker 6: Be a couple.
- 37:22Speaker 1: And ladies and gentlemen, it is my distinct pleasure here
- 37:27Speaker 1: on a Thursday morning to introduce into the show Malanwala.
- 37:31Speaker 4: How are you, brother?
- 37:52Speaker 2: Thank you, brother. Thanks for having me. I'm too good,
- 37:55Speaker 2: too good.
- 37:56Speaker 6: All the way from Auckland, New Zealand, from what I understand, correct?
- 38:00Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, yes. I'm currently located here.
- 38:04Speaker 6: The best thing about it is you're the very first
- 38:06Speaker 6: guest that we have had on our show from New Zealand.
- 38:09Speaker 6: So there you go. The history is being made right now.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Thank you, man. Thank you. I'm amazed to listen to it.
- 38:17Speaker 7: Yeah, very good.
- 38:18Speaker 6: Listen, brother, I know your story. Of course, we all
- 38:21Speaker 6: begin in Punjab somewhere. So tell us the story. How
- 38:25Speaker 6: did you end up in Auckland?
- 38:26Speaker 2: Actually, when I was 17 years old, I was from
- 38:34Speaker 2: a low-middle-class family, and I saw everything in the system.
- 38:38Speaker 2: When I grew up, I saw everything, and I didn't
- 38:42Speaker 2: even feel like going home. I came here, I did
- 38:46Speaker 2: one thing, then I was playing Kabaddi over here, I
- 38:50Speaker 2: played Kabaddi for 4-5 years. Then singing and lyrically, I
- 38:57Speaker 2: was doing something or the other, but my ligament Did
- 39:01Speaker 2: you ever do any training? How did you get into music?
- 39:05Speaker 2: Because you had a background of playing Kabaddi, but was
- 39:09Speaker 2: there music in your family? Did you have influence or
- 39:12Speaker 2: was it just that you were listening.
- 39:17Speaker 6: To How did you get into music? Because you had
- 39:23Speaker 6: a background of playing kabaddi, but was there music in
- 39:26Speaker 6: your family? Did you have influence, or was it just
- 39:28Speaker 6: that you were listening to music out there and you
- 39:31Speaker 6: thought you should get involved?
- 39:33Speaker 2: I think it's always like a new kind of music.
- 39:36Speaker 2: When I was starting, I used to go to a
- 39:39Speaker 2: village in Gurdwara. I used to do music there and
- 39:43Speaker 2: I liked it. I was not that professional, but I
- 39:46Speaker 2: liked to go and sing along. After that, I used
- 39:50Speaker 2: to do some things and then I used to write songs. First,
- 39:52Speaker 2: I tried to sing for someone. But then I didn't
- 39:59Speaker 2: feel like doing it myself. There was no one in
- 40:02Speaker 2: the family who did music. But I was interested. I said,
- 40:08Speaker 2: no one will take me for training. It's just whatever
- 40:13Speaker 2: new music was coming at that time, UK music was rising.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Because in Punjab, that UK music was not going on.
- 40:21Speaker 2: But UK music itself was a big thing. Only guys
- 40:25Speaker 2: who made it to Punjab was Aman Haze, those albums.
- 40:30Speaker 2: So I was so impressed with the new music especially.
- 40:33Speaker 2: And growing up, I used to listen to JK. I
- 40:36Speaker 2: think his song was England, naturally. So that was very
- 40:43Speaker 2: inspiring to me. It's always the new music. Whatever was new,
- 40:49Speaker 2: it was very inspiring to me.
- 40:52Speaker 6: One of the things that was very interesting about what
- 40:54Speaker 6: England was doing with Punjabi music was that they were
- 40:57Speaker 6: changing the sound. They were the first ones to really
- 41:01Speaker 6: take it from what was very traditional Punjabi folk music
- 41:04Speaker 6: that was coming from Punjabi and they started to introduce
- 41:06Speaker 6: electronic instruments more to it and everything. So many different
- 41:10Speaker 6: influences came from the UK.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I think what's happening now, it just got started in UK.
- 41:16Speaker 6: I agree.
- 41:17Speaker 2: At that time. And I think after that, then after
- 41:23Speaker 2: Sidhu came and he changed some narratives and he changed
- 41:27Speaker 2: the whole music game, then it goes on.
- 41:33Speaker 6: Yeah. How is the culture in Australia and New Zealand?
- 41:37Speaker 6: You know that We see the culture really strong, of course,
- 41:40Speaker 6: in the UK it started, in Canada, in the United States.
- 41:44Speaker 6: I know a lot of these big artists are coming
- 41:46Speaker 6: here and they're touring, they're doing very well. And then
- 41:49Speaker 6: also big artists are now going to Australia, New Zealand,
- 41:51Speaker 6: of course, Satinder Sartaj, Diljit Dosan, so many artists that
- 41:55Speaker 6: are coming and going from there. What's the scene like
- 41:58Speaker 6: right now? What's the culture like right now in Australia
- 42:00Speaker 6: and New Zealand for all of us living here in
- 42:02Speaker 6: North America?
- 42:04Speaker 2: I think traditionally, if you're talking about Punjabi singers coming
- 42:09Speaker 2: to Australia and New Zealand, it's going day by day.
- 42:12Speaker 2: But I'm talking according to hip-hop. I think it's taking time.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Australia is getting there. Australia is getting here, Canada maybe
- 42:23Speaker 2: in some time they'll be able to do that. But
- 42:26Speaker 2: New Zealand will take some time. They're going but not
- 42:30Speaker 2: that fast. But traditionally, the singers that are coming, they're
- 42:36Speaker 2: coming from long time and we're having some good shows
- 42:39Speaker 2: and stuff over there for traditional singers.
- 42:43Speaker 6: I wanted to tell you how much I love your
- 42:46Speaker 6: song Tak Dinak Din. And to me, I love how
- 42:51Speaker 6: you bring the music together, the production, and then most importantly,
- 42:56Speaker 6: your lyrics on that song are so awesome. Do you
- 43:00Speaker 6: write your own lyrics?
- 43:03Speaker 14: Yes, yes, yes.
- 43:03Speaker 2: I write my own lyrics.
- 43:04Speaker 6: I know you mentioned that you used to start and
- 43:06Speaker 6: you were first looking for artists to give the lyrics to.
- 43:09Speaker 6: I'm very glad you did not do that because I
- 43:12Speaker 6: think that you are probably the only person to really
- 43:16Speaker 6: express the writing in your own way. When you started
- 43:19Speaker 6: to sing your own music, did you find that to
- 43:22Speaker 6: be the case? Were you very comfortable right away because
- 43:24Speaker 6: you knew what you were writing the lyrics for?
- 43:26Speaker 2: Yes, actually. Whenever I was writing, I was almost always singing.
- 43:32Speaker 2: So whenever I was writing songs, I was singing already
- 43:36Speaker 2: while writing only. But I had some friends, I wanted
- 43:39Speaker 2: to give them songs. Then I felt like if I
- 43:43Speaker 2: could give them any energy, then I can do something.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Then when I just, in New Zealand, like in the
- 43:50Speaker 2: corona period, I started uploading freestyle kind of things on
- 43:55Speaker 2: Instagram and it went viral. That's how everything goes on
- 43:59Speaker 2: from there. Yeah, yeah.
- 44:01Speaker 6: So, we're getting ready to world premiere the song Unlimited.
- 44:06Speaker 6: As everybody knows, it's going to be coming out tomorrow,
- 44:09Speaker 6: the 16th of October. What a big day for you.
- 44:12Speaker 6: And for all of the fans here of Punjabi music,
- 44:15Speaker 6: they get to hear the song today. Let's talk about
- 44:17Speaker 6: this song. Tell us about the song itself. Give us
- 44:21Speaker 6: the background story. How did it happen? Tell us about
- 44:25Speaker 6: the lyrics. The song's called Unlimited. What does the song
- 44:28Speaker 6: mean to you?
- 44:30Speaker 2: I think that's one of the songs. I went to
- 44:33Speaker 2: Bombay and J-Trix, my friend's friend, that's how I connected.
- 44:38Speaker 2: That's how I got connected on Instagram. Then we were
- 44:44Speaker 2: at Zero Chill. Shout out to Zero Chill. And we
- 44:48Speaker 2: were at his house. So we had made a song there,
- 44:53Speaker 2: J-Trix came and he played me some beats and my
- 44:57Speaker 2: producer Spyboy, who produces Unlimited, shout out to him also.
- 45:02Speaker 2: He also played my beats and J-Trix liked this one
- 45:06Speaker 2: because it's a little old-fashioned. It's a sample drive, basically
- 45:13Speaker 2: what I understood from J-Trix. And then I would write,
- 45:17Speaker 2: I think, 15-20 minutes. My part was completed, then J-Trix
- 45:20Speaker 2: wrote it. So it was just recorded there. At that time,
- 45:22Speaker 2: we weren't sure how the song would sound. Because when
- 45:24Speaker 2: you make something, it sounds different. When you listen to
- 45:28Speaker 2: it again and again, it sounds different. We listened to
- 45:30Speaker 2: it again and again, and we liked it. Lyrically, it's
- 45:32Speaker 2: like unlimited. Sir, we are limited. Just a moment. Just
- 45:46Speaker 2: a moment. I'm cutting out.
- 45:52Speaker 6: Don't worry. I can edit this. Don't worry. Hello. Hello.
- 45:57Speaker 14: Yes.
- 45:57Speaker 4: Yes. Don't worry.
- 45:58Speaker 6: I can edit this if you want to start over
- 46:00Speaker 6: or if you want to go back to the unlimited. Yes.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Yes. I wanted to talk about the scene.
- 46:06Speaker 6: In specifically right now in India, of course, because you
- 46:37Speaker 6: said you go back and forth a lot. And obviously
- 46:40Speaker 6: working with Samohit, and I know you've been working with
- 46:42Speaker 6: the Gully Gang team and so many other great crews
- 46:45Speaker 6: over there in India. What is the scene like right now?
- 46:48Speaker 6: How evolved? How much has it changed over the last
- 46:51Speaker 6: few years? Where is it now, in your opinion? And
- 46:57Speaker 6: give me your impression of what Indian hip-hop is doing
- 47:00Speaker 6: right now.
- 47:02Speaker 2: I think basically Indian hip hop is doing too good
- 47:05Speaker 2: at the moment. I can speak on like Punjabi hip
- 47:09Speaker 2: hop at the moment what I heard. When I first
- 47:11Speaker 2: time went to Bombay, all the people I met here,
- 47:15Speaker 2: Hindi speaking also, they were just, I mean, whatever they
- 47:19Speaker 2: were singing in Punjabi, they were very good. And I
- 47:23Speaker 2: was amazed to see that Punjabi music, I mean, just a,
- 47:28Speaker 2: the language of a state related to Bombay and everyone's
- 47:32Speaker 2: thinking and understanding that. I think everything is on the rise.
- 47:38Speaker 2: When my friend from Nigeria came here, he taught me
- 47:43Speaker 2: Punjabi songs. In terms of Indian hip-hop also, I'm talking,
- 47:47Speaker 2: I taught Punjabi songs and he was also He was
- 47:51Speaker 2: very happy to hear that. He said, we work on
- 47:54Speaker 2: lower octave and you work on higher octave. And it
- 47:58Speaker 2: sounds fresh at the moment. So I think everything is
- 48:03Speaker 2: on a right track at the moment. Especially, I think
- 48:07Speaker 2: Punjabi music is more accepted around the country these days.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Everyone is listening to Punjabi music. And I think it's
- 48:18Speaker 2: all going in good.
- 48:19Speaker 6: I think so too. I think so too. I wanted to,
- 48:21Speaker 6: before we play the song Unlimited and before, and when
- 48:25Speaker 6: we play it, I'll ask you to introduce it to everybody.
- 48:27Speaker 6: But I have one last question here. I've noticed that
- 48:30Speaker 6: you have really found a very interesting chemistry with your
- 48:33Speaker 6: producer Spy Boy. And because for me, when I look
- 48:36Speaker 6: at hip hop artists and when I look at their producers,
- 48:39Speaker 6: there's really this chemistry that ends up, developing around a
- 48:43Speaker 6: producer and then the artist. Is this something that is
- 48:47Speaker 6: developing there amongst the two of you in terms of
- 48:49Speaker 6: a chemistry? And tell me about his work and how
- 48:52Speaker 6: it inspires you.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Actually, when I met Spy, we had a long conversation
- 49:00Speaker 2: on the phone. I asked him about the vision. At
- 49:03Speaker 2: that time, I was only finding out that he had
- 49:07Speaker 2: a vision. Then we'll sit and we'll talk about something
- 49:11Speaker 2: on a music terms. So, I had a conversation and
- 49:14Speaker 2: I sat with Spidey and the first song, the first
- 49:17Speaker 2: beat he played was called Scenario, which is my biggest
- 49:21Speaker 2: song now.
- 49:21Speaker 6: Got it. Yeah.
- 49:23Speaker 2: I'm on 30 million streams across the platform, I guess.
- 49:27Speaker 2: And Spy played the beat for me and within 10 minutes,
- 49:30Speaker 2: our song was made. After that, we started talking about sound.
- 49:32Speaker 2: And when I was in Zero, I was also talking
- 49:34Speaker 2: to Zero that he is a spy. I saw that
- 49:36Speaker 2: we can do something together. And he will have to
- 49:39Speaker 2: come to learn new things. Then we listened to all
- 49:54Speaker 2: the music, global, hip-hop, and I was telling them that
- 49:56Speaker 2: they should listen to it. I think that became our
- 50:01Speaker 2: comfort zone. Because if I feel something is wrong, lyrically,
- 50:06Speaker 2: or if a melody doesn't sound right, I don't know
- 50:09Speaker 2: what to do. I don't know what to do if
- 50:13Speaker 2: something doesn't sound right. I think that's a progressive thing.
- 50:17Speaker 6: Yes, it's a matter of trust.
- 50:21Speaker 2: It's about trust, and I think we listen to each
- 50:24Speaker 2: other's stories. It's a great thing that this band has done.
- 50:28Speaker 2: My house is Unlimited. Kolkata City's rapper J-Trix and produced
- 50:52Speaker 2: by my bro Spyboy. Just give me your feedback on Instagram, YouTube, everywhere.
- 51:03Speaker 2: I'll see your love everywhere. On Instagram, Apple Music, everywhere.
- 51:08Speaker 2: On iHeartRadio, on Rookies.
- 51:11Speaker 6: Beautiful, brother. Thank you so much for that. Folks, here's
- 51:15Speaker 6: the world premiere of the song Unlimited. I hope you
- 51:18Speaker 6: guys enjoy this.
- 51:19Speaker 25: The rule of our friendship is that we don't.
- 51:22Speaker 4: Stand and talk. We don't shout lies and talk about
- 51:25Speaker 4: our friends. I don't shake hands and tell. I don't
- 51:28Speaker 4: move away from others. I don't wear a load and play.
- 51:31Speaker 4: I don't laugh at everyone.
- 51:38Speaker 25: Ajo ji nahi kich bajna thode, tera bkhair kare Limited
- 51:43Speaker 25: baut ya circle sada, ya unlimited nahi bair mere Limited
- 51:48Speaker 25: baut ya circle mera, ya unlimited nahi bair mere Ya
- 51:52Speaker 25: unlimited nahi bair mere.
- 51:56Speaker 26: And I step into the game with some all white
- 51:58Speaker 26: forces Brown skinned ladke par hai all black sources Tujhe
- 52:01Speaker 26: lagta pura saal hume crash courses Offs poche kar pe
- 52:04Speaker 26: toh fir all red door steps Money black white mix
- 52:07Speaker 26: ladka theek nahi Brown munde hamse paayega tu cheet nahi
- 52:11Speaker 26: Paisa naashaa pyaar parifar mere yaar On the rocks double
- 52:14Speaker 26: cup pite neet pasan leak nahi Sixty ninety idhar udhar
- 52:16Speaker 26: shaam bulgare I forgot his name in the morning. The
- 52:20Speaker 26: next day, I forgot my work. Since I met God,
- 52:23Speaker 26: I forgot the devil. Boys are cynical, they are physical.
- 52:26Speaker 26: Don't ask me about the problem, then why is your
- 52:28Speaker 26: friend critical? Half of them are minimal, the rest seem criminal.
- 52:31Speaker 26: If you go out directly from home, even.
- 52:33Speaker 6: A little bit subliminal.
- 52:35Speaker 25: These boys are saying that you are a fool.
- 52:37Speaker 4: I don't know what to say.
- 53:06Speaker 6: The artist's name is Malavala. The song is called Unlimited.
- 53:10Speaker 6: And right there, folks, was a Ruckus Avenue Radio world
- 53:14Speaker 6: premiere for you. You're the first people to hear that
- 53:18Speaker 6: song across the world. It becomes available to everybody else tomorrow.
- 53:24Speaker 6: So right there, a world premiere for you guys. And now, folks,
- 53:29Speaker 6: let's bring in Duita Dasgupta to this episode with today's
- 53:32Speaker 6: artist spotlight.
- 53:33Speaker 27: Thanks, Sammy.
- 53:34Speaker 7: Hi, everyone.
- 53:35Speaker 27: This is Dutta Dashgupta, your Ruckus Avenue Radio busy correspondent
- 53:38Speaker 27: back with some fun facts about your favorite artists. Did
- 53:41Speaker 27: you know that Karan Ashla, an Indo-Canadian singer, rapper, and songwriter,
- 53:45Speaker 27: met popular Indian singer Jesse Gill when he was in
- 53:48Speaker 27: 9th grade? Impressed by his performance at a wedding ceremony,
- 53:51Speaker 27: Jesse Gill asked him to give the lyrics of the song, Range,
- 53:54Speaker 27: where it was eventually released in 2014. Karan Ajla was
- 53:58Speaker 27: also advised by Canadian producer and rapper Deep Jandu to
- 54:01Speaker 27: move to Toronto and start voicing a few Punjabi songs,
- 54:05Speaker 27: which helped him shape up his career. And did you
- 54:07Speaker 27: also know the titular song of Diljit Dasan's music album
- 54:10Speaker 27: GOAT was written by Karan Ajla? He has now 11
- 54:14Speaker 27: million monthly listeners on Spotify and is a prominent artist
- 54:17Speaker 27: in the Punjabi music industry. Well, that's all from me.
- 54:21Speaker 27: Now back to you, Sammy.
- 54:22Speaker 6: Thank you so much, Doita. Garan Azla, one of the
- 54:26Speaker 6: big mainstays of the Punjabi music industry, and statistically, one
- 54:31Speaker 6: of the biggest artists in all of Indian music. This
- 54:35Speaker 6: song is called Ashke, the lead single from his brand
- 54:38Speaker 6: new EP called Season 1.
- 54:43Speaker 4: .
- 54:44Speaker 7: .
- 54:45Speaker 4: .
- 54:50Speaker 28: Mercy This magic is in my hands. You see the
- 55:11Speaker 28: world in a blink of an eye. I stand in
- 55:13Speaker 28: the middle of the crowd. I walk straight ahead. I
- 55:15Speaker 28: don't have a wing. I'm in the middle of the crowd.
- 55:17Speaker 28: It's like someone is pulling me.
- 55:20Speaker 4: I don't have any trust in my body. My body
- 55:22Speaker 4: is black. Your eyes are red. I didn't sleep.
- 55:25Speaker 28: I sat in the middle of the crowd. I'm in
- 55:27Speaker 28: the middle of the crowd. I'm in the middle of
- 55:30Speaker 28: the crowd. I'm in the middle of the crowd.
- 55:42Speaker 28: .
- 55:46Speaker 4: .
- 56:05Speaker 28: Wherever I keep my feet, I keep my toes on
- 56:08Speaker 28: the ground.
- 56:08Speaker 4: I came to the village for a kiss.
- 56:10Speaker 28: I didn't want to give a show-off, so I went
- 56:14Speaker 28: to India. I met a girl, but I didn't even
- 56:17Speaker 28: get a picture with her. I'm a young man, you're lucky,
- 56:21Speaker 28: you're lucky. You do the body, I swim, and I
- 56:26Speaker 28: do the Khamsheri.
- 56:27Speaker 4: We are the same, we are the same.
- 56:29Speaker 7: We are the same.
- 56:30Speaker 4: We are the same. We are the same. We are
- 56:33Speaker 4: the same.
