- 0:00SPEAKER_00: The kids are spoiled and they're gonna get what they want, and they've always gotten what they want, but now you're handing them a death machine.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: It's one thing when you buy your kid a Mercedes, and I'm like, wow, he's got a nicer car than me.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: But it's different when you hand him a missile.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's you might as well buy your son a weapon and be like, hey, don't shoot directly at anyone.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Head up to the park with the other kids with the guns.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's not exactly the same, but it is a weapon when used incorrectly.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: It's the PW podcast hanging out in the studio at Stafford Hills where work meets play.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And of course, you can get in where you fit in here.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: The pool's still wide open, saw people down there sunbathing today.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, the sunshine has returned, Marcus, and we're in a quality spot there.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Of course, you can pump some iron inside.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, you can do all the things.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Actually, when I was walking in today, I saw a guy that I've seen in the gym a bunch, and he's still in his slacks, a nice dress shirt, dressed much nicer than I am today.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And um, he's like, So what do you do?
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Do you lay by the pool or do you go to the gym?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Like, well, you're here in slacks, so I like your I like your start.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: He's like, I guess I gotta go sweat it out.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: But he made the right decision.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: He's gonna go there, then he can return to the pool.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And when he's done, he'll be a happy camper, of course.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Staffordhills.com.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: All you gotta do, tell him Drew sent you for half off your initiation.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: The place voted, the number one health and wellness facility in the Portland area, and for good reason.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: And it is a good time to get a little bit of sweat in because football has arrived, and with doubleheader days, you know, it I don't think I ever remember football starting as early as it has, and now you get a there's the that Wednesday game, and then now there's a Thursday game, and then of course a full slate this weekend.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: I don't have to ask if you're excited about it because I know that's the answer, Marcus.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Um, are I haven't asked you though, are you participating in fantasy football?
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Uh going all the way back to, I believe, the year 2004, I've been in the same league.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's it's you know, changed out a few members over the time, Drew, and definitely had some rule changes and such, but uh we're all still together and yeah, it's that time of year again.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Just had our draft a week or so ago.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: We get it done in August.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, so typically we'll already be like making sweaty decisions at this point in time in the year, which I have been.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Which it's that's a little scary.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, you never know when you get those late season injuries, or that guy you drafted at quarterback just lost the job to someone else.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm a Vikings fan, Minnesota Vikings.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Of course, we have no team uh for me here in the Portland area.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: I was never really a Seahawk guy, which I have had more respect for him over the years, but JJ McCarthy, who the Vikings took with like number nine overall first round pick.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: He was supposed to be the future of the franchise, just named the third string quarterback for the Vikings.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So uh more of the same.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: And you said before we came on here, that's a very expensive third stringer.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it really is, man.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: And and you're right, with fantasy, you take a risk having the draft early, like we do.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: And it just was one of those things where Labor Day weekend, everybody is not around a computer.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: And we got guys from New York all the way to Seattle and uh all the way down, I I think down south on the eastern seaboard as well.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: So it we just can't organize it any better than that.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: And you end up getting screwed a little bit.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: I'm sitting here scratching my head at that Jeremiah Love pick I made because who knows if that dude's gonna play.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: And I mean, it's just it's football season.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: This is how it goes every year.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: I get super excited to get kicked in the teeth in my fantasy draft, and then uh the 49ers start getting injured one by one.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: It's pretty much just the writing on the wall every year, Drew.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Wait, is Jeremiah Love?
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Is that the Cardinals running back?
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Why wouldn't he be playing?
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Uh high ankle sprain in camp, and uh actually just named the number two running back on the uh depth chart.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: We got Tyson Alger starting that one, so uh, or Tyler Alger, excuse me.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: So he looks like you picked him too.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Congratulations.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: We did the big eyes and the arms in the air.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: That was that a dead giveaway for you.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: It really was, man.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: We can sweat that pick out together this year, all right.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I know, and I'll I'll tell you why that fires me up, too.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: But first things first, so back to your fantasy league.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Do you guys do a uh a prize and punishment situation?
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: No punishment, but we do have the prize.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Uh in fact, this year Yeah, cash prize.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: This year the uh the buy-in almost doubled, and we've for the entire life of it, we've done first place takes it, second place gets their money back, and this is the first time in 20 plus years that no, first place is taking it all.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Everybody else can can get fucked.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Excuse me.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: That's totally fine.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: You know what's funny is the reason I like the punishment.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Now I don't like me being punished, and I'm in a fantasy league too that I'll tell you about in a second, but the reason I like the punishment is it keeps that person who's getting throttled from giving up on the season and screwing up everything for all the rest of us.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Because, like, say you're having a terrible season and you're taking on Larry, and Larry and I are battling for playoff position, but Marcus doesn't care at all.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: And so now you're not changing your lineups, you're willing to just sacrifice the whole league and start offloading people to other friends.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: That stuff kind of ruins it.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: And now, granted, if everyone in the group is diehard and promises not to do that, that's one thing.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: But when you have a punishment in line at the end of it, it kind of makes people have a fire underneath them.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Um, now my neighbor across the street, loser, all male league, loser gets a Brazilian.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Oh, God.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: And we've seen that happen live in a radio studio before.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: That is not a pretty thing.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Like it's funny for everybody watching and and you know, listening.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: It is not happy days for the person that's on that table, man.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: That's that's yikes.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: And you gotta you have to cut clear that with the location that's gonna do the Brazilian, because I brought this up to a couple of ladies on the street when this all kind of came to light.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: And they were like, there's a chance they're gonna send you away.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Like, they don't want to deal with your old mangy squirrel down there, dude.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: They're like, no, no, no, no, no.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: We don't like doing Brazilians on chicks, let alone you.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Well, we can legislate rules around this.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: All right, rules are if you can find a professional establishment that will allow this to take place, that's option A.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Option B is whoever finished second to last, get to waxen.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Um, that's the way I feel, you know, maybe a punishment for kind of climb the punishment ladder a little bit.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: It's not as bad.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: You don't have to get the Brazilian, but you do got to get in there and get your hands dirty, if you know what I mean.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Uh now the best one I saw was not from anybody that I know.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: And my brother, I will go back a notch.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Back at the beginning of fantasy football, they were doing this stuff like crazy.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: And like, you know, 15 years ago, going to their favorite sports team dressed as the cheerleader for the other sports team, and and being forced to active actively cheer from your seat for four quarters of, say, your favorite basketball team was incredible.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Um, but the best one I saw was on uh it was shared by Barstool, and it was loser enters a bodybuilding competition, no prep.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Like you don't even get to bronze the body, you just walk your ass out there and start posing with the big dogs.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: And I saw this guy who looked like he played some high school football, right?
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Like he looked like he still in a t-shirt with a bunch of other dads, looks pretty ripped.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: But when you put him up against a freshly oiled bronze bandito, and and he has no history of he's just flex the arms down, flex them up.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Like it's truly embarrassing.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Now, I think I mentioned this to those same group of people who said the Brazilian, and almost everyone there said, I'll take the Brazilian.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: So, what about you, Marcus?
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Are you willing to do the bodybuilding competition or will you take the Brazilian?
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, I I think I would rather go for, and and this just gives you a peek into my personality, Drew.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: I would rather take, I think, the public embarrassment than I would the pain.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Um, just because I don't, I mean, I like I don't even let my wife go digging around down there.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Like she's allowed access, but not to not just unfettered, you know?
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: And and so I don't think I could sit still for it.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: I again, this was a punishment that we served to somebody, one of our stunt guys back in our radio days.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: And it was horrific to watch him go through it and the positions that he had to be in on that table that other people saw him in.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Like, I just don't know if I could sleep at night after knowing that that people were around and I went through this.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: So give me the public humiliation.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: I'll get up there and throw a beer gut up on stage.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: I don't care.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the ingrown hairs are the other thing to keep in mind here because, you know, right before I left the radio, we waxed a guy's chest on the show because we wanted a clean chest at an event.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: The ingrown hairs, I think he still has a disgusting like scarring pattern there from how bad it was, and it all turned into nasty white heads and and the whole deal.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And now I've never had a Brazilian, and I you know I don't have the nip hair for any of what we just discussed, right?
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: But I don't have the back hair, but I did when I got married, Amy was like, do me a solid and let's clean up your eyebrows.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: So I went and got my the rims of my eyebrows cleaned up and they did a little action.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: A, it hurt like hell.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: And B, the inflammation that came along with it, my body was like, nah, not for you, dude.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Not for you.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And I just knew immediately, I'm like icing this the unibrow spot between my eyes.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Like, I think Anthony Davis is onto something, and maybe I'll just let this thing grow.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: But it is not a good deal.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, maybe ladies get used to it or they're better with aftercare, but it's not over when the Brazilian's over.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: No, no, it's definitely not.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: And I do think there's some uh there's a little bit of science to them handling it better because uh, from what I understand, you know, my wife's a tattoo artist, been there for about three years now.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, women don't feel the pain as bad as as a lot of men do when it comes to getting tattooed.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: So that would make me think that maybe they're just a little bit more grizzled on the uh on the exterior there, Drew.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: And also maybe the hair doesn't just try to fight its way out of them like it does me.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: I I don't know.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: But um Well, I I agree.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: I think it's also a part of nature.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: You know, being a guy who watched my wife have childbirth three different times in all different scenarios, good God, don't sign us up for that.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Like the the the whole time I'm just going, I'm making little comments like God, you're such a trooper.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Oh man, I I don't think I could do that.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: And then they'd look at you like, you don't think you could never.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: And it's just Zool comes out of them.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: And I don't I think that that's how human the human race survived is women have a higher threshold of pain.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, we think of uh men as in like, we'll take care of the tough stuff, but we don't want like a sliver under our fingernail or anything like that.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: You know, like we we'll pick up something heavy, but if you want true pain with a grizzled response, I'll give that to the ladies all day long.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: 100%, man.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: I just found one more uh fantasy football punishment here that I have to bring up to you real quick.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: Hit me.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: Um the loser has to start an OnlyFans account and make the equivalent of the prize money uh in the year that you have up to the next draft.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Or I guess it's not quite a year, it's probably about eight months.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: So you better start taking feet picks, dude.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: That's all I can say if you lose that one.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: So creative stuff.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Well, and I feel like the punishment should be you get a double down punishment.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Like if you don't make all the money in the calendar year or the lead up, I guess you know, it's like seven or eight months till we start football over again once it's done, then you get another bigger punishment.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: So, like, you better have your legs behind your head playing drums on your ass cheeks in order to try and make that money before it's all said and done, or you're getting a brutal punishment.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: And you think the OnlyFans page is bad.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Wait till we make you become a VTuber and earn twice the prize money.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, it just keeps compounding, right?
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Well, that, and you know what your buddies are gonna do.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Screenshot, save video, screenshot, save video for life.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: It's forever.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: You know, it reminds me of when I got to college, I was given like a booklet of of all the pictures of me through my years, you know.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: And back when we were kids, you didn't have a smartphone.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: So it was like you had actual snapshots of a ton of different things throughout your life, and that was basically all that exists about you.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Well, there was a picture of me dressed up like a girl for Halloween.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: My mom punted one year and just dressed us all as females and sent us to school, like, woo, just saved$150.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Well, that was in my booklet, which I don't have any shame in that.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: I'm an old thesbian.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: But the funny part is one of my buddies found that booklet, stole that picture, made a color copy of it, saved it to his computer, and I'm not joking.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Once a week, different days, so you couldn't predict it.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Once a week for a year, every time I came down the stairs, I had to look up and make sure there wasn't a fresh printed picture of me dressed like a female, which is still fine, but you don't want it to be on the wall like it's the founders of the house.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Like it was not something I wanted day in and day out.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: So you be careful what you put on paper or what you agreed to because your buddies will take it, save it, and torture you with it.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the internet and fantasy football punishments are forever.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: So good luck to you and your fantasy team.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Same, um, I've got a team as well.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: My 11-year-old daughter, you'll be proud of this.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: She was like, wait, I don't get to be in the league.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: I'm like, Yeah, you're not ready.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: You don't have an email address.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: She's like, I'll use my mom's email and I have a tablet.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: You can't put the app on my tablet.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Well, it turns out I have to remove a ton of parental guidance things on there to get it on there, but it it's on there now, and she drafted 10th out of 11, but she lands.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: So this is what frustrates me.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: I took is his name's Fred Taylor, right, from the Colts.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Uh uh Jonathan.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Jonathan Taylor was the old Jaguar from back.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Jonathan Taylor.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: My bad.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: I take him first overall.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: He's like the fourth guy on the list or something.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: I've got number three.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: She gets Saquon at 10.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Now, granted, I'm like, I'd take Saquon.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Well, guess who's playing my daughter in week one?
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: It's me.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: And so what they do is they give you those matchups, and you know this, but there's a check mark next to who is favored in the matchup.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Well, at the 10th pick, Saquon over Jonathan Taylor all day long.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: There, man.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, Colts going up against the Ravens.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: That's a stout defense.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, they they they like to play the run.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: So we'll see what happens there later on in the draft, though, to get back at her.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: She's like, I have to go to the bathroom.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: I'll be right back.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: She's like, I'm gonna draft this guy.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: So just don't take him.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: She walks upstairs.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: I'm looking at the list.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: I'm like, well, that's a no-brainer.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: I gotta, I gotta take that guy.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: And so I take him and she comes back down.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: She's like, someone took my guy.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: And she looks over at my computer and she's like, Dad! Sorry.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Gotta teach him early.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Don't you do that.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Not a chance.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Uh well, like I said, I'm so excited about NFL football being here.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Full slate of games this weekend.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: I can't wait for Scott Hansen to tell us seven hours of it's not commercial free football anymore.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: It's interruption-free football, is what they say now, because they run ads in the corner.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: I didn't find it to be too annoying, but I do love the action.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: And I mean, I'll be honest, I'll probably be actively on DraftKings here in just a little bit.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Um, but what we're gonna do, Marcus, we're gonna take a quick break and we're gonna come back.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: We've been talking about Portland a lot lately, to an annoying level for a lot of people who are in other parts of the Pacific Northwest.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna do a little game of talking about stories from different parts of the Northwest, including Seattle.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: We got stuff from Central Oregon and Bend and the whole deal.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, we'll get at it here in just a minute.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: The podcast is brought to you by Motorsport Hillsboro, where they have you dialed in.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Not only do they have incredible selection when it comes to everything from bikes, both road and dirt bikes, but also you've got the e-assist mountain bikes there.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: You've got uh side-by-sides, sea-does, all your watercraft you can imagine.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: They've got it dialed for you right there at Motorsport Hillsboro.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: And really, the thing that makes it all work is they've got the greatest financing around.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: The Northwest's best, and nobody works harder to make sure they get you dialed in and you leave feeling comfortable and happy when you walk out of Motorsport Hillsboro.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: You got to check out their full inventory at Motosport Hillsboro.com and you will love it.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: And it's a mini museum down there.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Look up in the rafters, spend some time.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: Don't just come in for a dip and go.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: It's the kind of place where uh there is no price at admission, but it feels like there should be because it is incredible in there, and Scott and the gang will take care of you and get you out riding in no time.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: Also brought to you by Axiom Plumbing, Sewer and Septic, all things water and waste.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: They've got you covered right there.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: And my buddy Bruce over at Axiom is locally raised, and he is not part of some big private equity form firm.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: He is live and local right here in the Northwest, and they will dial you in.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And if you tell them Drew sent you 10% off your first service, and it is starting to get into those colder months, it's right there on the horizon.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: So don't forget$500 off a new water heater if you're running into that.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: I was just dealing with that recently, and Bruce and the gang are the perfect people to take care of you.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Just tell them that I sent you all the details about what they can do for you at axiompdx.com.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: And brought to you by the Stafford Hills Club, which is the premier place in the Portland area to work out, relax, and just kind of take care of yourself.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: It's a sense of community around here, and they hold the door for you.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: They do all the things they want to see you at Stafford Hills.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: They have top-end tennis, a salt water pool, great workout facilities, and all the greatest classes you could imagine.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: And of course, high rocks training, the premier cutting edge stuff, and it's all happening right here at Stafford Hills.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Check out all the details on what's going down at staffordhills.com.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: All right, we're gonna run around the Pacific Northwest and get to some of the big stories that are affecting us today.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna start off up near Seattle.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: We got a fishy situation, Marcus.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Drew, uh according to the Seattle Times here, uh bunch of federally protected Chinook salmon have died underneath uh I-90 in Lake Washington up in Seattle.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Now, uh, it looks like, according to early investigation reports, that there is uh a cable called an underwater anode cable or anode.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: I don't know how to say it.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: What I know is it's killing fish uh from what it looks like.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: It looks like some amateur divers were um exploring some the ruins of a 1990s bridge collapse, and they saw some fish carcasses on the on the bottom, and so they started to look around.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: They went back a couple more times.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Turns out around 2,000 fish have already been recovered uh in what is being called sort of a mass die-off.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Now, not all of these uh fish are federally protected Chinook salmon, but some of them are.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: And uh gosh.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: The the part about this that's just so sad is you haven't been able to fish for Chinook salmon in Lake Washington for almost three decades at this point.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: They've been really trying to move mountains to keep this this species of fish alive in this area.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, so much so, Drew, that they even truck fish around the lake to fish hatcheries to try to get them spawned and make sure that they can propagate the species.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: So uh two steps forward, two shocking steps back here, Drew, in Seattle, as we electrocute some 2,000 fish under I-90.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's pretty silly.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: You know, we go 30 years, we can't fish for one, and we just cooked them all underwater.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: We turned it into a deep sea skipper's party.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: All we're short is the tartar sauce at this point, and we're just absolutely decimating the entire population.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: I this just goes back to my problem with allowing certain parties to decide where we're gonna run electricity or these cooling stations for all the AI that's going on.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you go up and down the gorge, they're everywhere, and they're causing serious water temperature changes because, of course, you need to cool these giant units, which cause the water to get warmer than what keeps the fish alive or the other wildlife in the water.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: And it's just it's pathetic to me that we're not deciding this on a more grand scale.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Now, I did see Oregon as the first state in the Union to put a quote unquote pause on.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: on cooling stations, which I can appreciate that.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: But like let's go back to this electric electricity line that's running underneath Lake Washington.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: Like, who authorized that?
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Why is it not voted on by the group?
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: You know, now granted, well, it's a lot easier to go through the middle.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Well, if we did that in every construction problem where we decide we're going to go with the easier option, we would destroy our natural habitat.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Well, and there's always, I mean, part of the reason that it's so hard to build anymore, especially in big metropolitan areas like Seattle and Portland, is because you're, if you're ever breaking new ground anywhere, you're immediately going to be subject to some sort of environment environmental impact study.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: And they'll tell you after three months of going through with a fine-tooth comb, all of the bugs and wildlife that you're going to displace and kill.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: How is it that on a project like I-90, we didn't have something like that that could have foreseen this?
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, it seems pretty simple.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: I know that you're not supposed to take a toaster into the bath.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Like those two things don't mix.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: But all of a sudden we've got I-90 uh southbound lanes sponsored by Gorton's fish sticks because we're having a fish fry on the bottom, Drew, it doesn't make sense to me.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: And more than anything, it makes me feel like the same thing as always is that we're we've got all of these bureaucracies in place and everybody makes money but nobody actually does their job.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: It it seems like two and two before here, let's not put the cord right underneath because we're going to kill some fish, but nobody saw it coming, I guess.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: So uh this is certain to have ripple effects throughout uh the state of Washington, you can bet, because anytime a Chinook salmon dies up there, uh, there's hearings.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: So there's probably going to be somebody's going to have to pay the piper on this one, Drew.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, if I go fishing without a fishing license, I can just bend straight over and take it, but they can just cook them at will below I-90, so that's great.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: So here's another one for you, Marcus heading back into the state of Oregon.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Out in central Oregon, they're asking you today to turn your lights off in the evening for the sake of the birds.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: We might not care about the salmon bud, but we care about the birds.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: The fall migration and residents and businesses are asked to just reduce artificial light overnight to protect those birds.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Have they not been able to fly over the top of us for darn near forever?
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: I I mean I really did think the birds own the skies, Drew, when we're talking about uh the the the various wildlife here in the Pacific Northwest um and also a migration that's probably been happening for centuries, if not longer, I I would have to think that and the other thing too is like I've lived in rural communities where light pollution is noticeable from just houses and things like that, where it's like hey, a mile out of town you can see a lot more of the sky than you can right downtown.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: It's it's really easy to discern.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: Never once have I had birds just pummeling into the house.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Like had a couple of them get drunk on those little red berries that grow out in the in the uh northeast Oregon area like the the high desert and they they eat too many of them they get drunk and they will fly into a window and kill themselves seen it a hundred times but during the daylight and not migrating.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: So I don't know man.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: I'm not turning off my lights around here because there's all sorts of uh bipedal wildlife that'll end up hanging out around my house that I don't want to mess with.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: So I'm sorry.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: I know that this is Central Oregon but it ain't happening at the bridges residence either.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Well I might just sound like an idiot saying this but I didn't realize that the birds were all flying in the middle of the night.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: I thought it was like okay we're out of daylight hit a tree land it's like anything without lights land it.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Like it's not my fault if you barrel into the side of a building how about you wait for daybreak I mean maybe the lights are helping them.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Maybe they're just like next stop lapine and then they fly to where the next bank of lights are Yeah without it's like I haven't been able to find Lapine all fall.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: They just keep circling there isn't a damn light on here.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Exactly so I don't know again maybe we should order an environmental impact study Drew what will turning off the lights do to the migration of the birds we'll tell you in three months.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: But doesn't it show the difference we are so worried about something like the birds migration but we will cook every single salmon in Lake Washington.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: Here's one more for you Marcus and this actually I don't know if this is happening in your neighborhood I'm sure you've seen them but in Bend they're saying that the kids on the electric motorcycles are running rampant.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: This is something that's happening here as well.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: More than 30 young riders reportedly swarmed Bend streets on electric motorcycles over the weekend doing wheelies, blocking lanes, fleeing police.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: Now multiple teens were sighted and their bikes were impounded this is highly annoying to me and I know I sound like an old man saying get off my lawn but it's not the same as when you rode a bike it's not the same as a dirt bike and I'll tell you exactly why because when somebody is on a bicycle you can only go as fast as your legs will pedal you and that's it.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: And on these things some of them are going 40 50 miles an hour down residential streets doing wheelies with kids on the back half the time no helmet and most of them who wear a helmet Marcus they're doing it so they don't get in trouble.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Because there is a minimum age you have to be to be on these things and half of them I know are not.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: But the street right off of mine which is a like I think it's a 20 mile an hour max speed on this road at all times these kids will just hit a wheelie and they will roll for a quarter mile on a wheelie and then pop back down, break across traffic and then decide they're now bike lane eligible and so then they'll pop a bike lane and blow right through a red light.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: Like is that not a problem?
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: It it definitely is it's a huge safety issue and I listen I get the get off my lawn sense because you I feel the same way.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: Like I was a kid once I had a red line I popped wheelies and rode down the street but again this was a bicycle it was not something that had a motor attached to it.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: And I I think the other part here that at least is kind of personal for me and maybe it's for you too is we live in an area in the of the country the entire Pacific Northwest is very bicycle friendly.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: It's environmentally friendly to leave your car parked and ride your bike to work, ride your bike to go recreate, do whatever you want to do.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: So we're absolutely riddled with these bike lanes on every street that you can imagine, every main thoroughfare traffic patterns change because of them.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: And now you've added to the equation 40 and 50 mile an hour bikes and people that think that they can still use these bike lanes on these electric bikes and I have had kids rip by me and I drive a full size truck Drew you're a bug on a windshield if you hit my Chevy at 40 miles an hour on an electric bike and they rip around them like they're riding street bikes with racing experience.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: And they're not they they have no experience.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: They have no idea how long it takes them to stop.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: And uh it's funny I pulled up this uh this article on these kids in Ben that you were talking about and the the picture on the news article at Central Oregon Daily News is a kid piled up on the side of the road uh from the dash cam of a cop car.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: So it's like look that's there you have it right there.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah there's a bunch of them getting away but guess what you don't have any friends anymore because you're going to the clink because you couldn't keep it on two wheels.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: So you know it's it's dangerous.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: I don't want to see kids get hit by cars like you've never seen anybody get hit by a car on a bicycle it's not like the movies.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: It's it's a very very tragic thing and let's not have a bunch of kids get hurt because parents can't uh you know make some rules here Drew.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: And of course I don't want kids to get hurt but it is the parents will live with that and and you and I, the guy who hits him in our car, I have to live with that I'm not gonna sleep ever again if I know that I killed a kid even if it's their fault.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: Like if my car hits a child and they die I'm done like being me.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: And so that's not fair to everyone involved.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: And I guess you know when you you'll see somebody post about it on social media and the comments light up go to bed grandpa or uh I had a I was a kid I rode a bike well we already talked about all those things or the next argument is well I had a dirt bike and we used to rip them up and down the road and you want to know what the difference is I could hear you.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah I could hear you coming from a mile away which also kept you from riding rampant all the time but these kids it's they're not only flying but they're dead silent yeah and there's nothing that we can do about it.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: And you know what they're doing here Marcus there a buddy of mine told me he said that his son got busted acting a fool on his bike and so the cops didn't go to him they found out who he was and they went to his parents and they told his parents straight up hey you if I catch your kid doing this stuff one more time I'm coming back and I'm writing you up.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Perfect.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: And so guess what happened when the cops came back the next time that kid found his bike on eBay.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: It was it and it would be the same for me and my kids just quite frankly aren't getting one.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: We're just not gonna do it.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: And you know like when you're a little bit older we can talk about it but I am not going to feed you through a straw for the rest of your life because these other ding dongs are riding them.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: You know I I think about what my dad would have done in that scenario and I think it would have been a thing where I would have not known that the cop came to see my dad until he took me on a a little trip out to the dump and pointed over at the compactor and said look over there and there would be my my electric bike getting smashed into a nickel because that's exactly like that is what the cops are trying to do.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: They want to affect that type of parenting whether it be uh ironic or not um because it's the only thing that's gonna move the needle at this point.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: And I'm telling you, man, even going down some of the craziest hills that we used to bomb on our BMX's Drew, maybe 25 miles an hour.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's all you can get on these on a regular bike.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: And looking at 4050 I just the the speed alone if you've ever had one of these things come up on you while you're walking it's terrifying because you'll be walking and all of a sudden you'll hear shh and they're by you before you even know that they're there.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: And imagine putting yourself in a car with all the noise that you're talking about going on around you.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: It's a death wish Drew it really is.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: And and you could call me old in the comment section I don't give a damn.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: I'm also not going to be the idiot out there zipping around at 40 miles an hour on a little tiny piece of aluminum acting like I'm invincible.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: A hundred percent and I will stra I'll say those enablers out there, those who want to call you a grandpa or they want to say oh well I did it when I was a kid think about the big picture.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: And if you do have children, God, I hope you are smarter than that because when you buy them that bike and you push them out without rules it's one thing if you know you have a responsible kid who's not going to do it.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: There are those kids out there but to send them out and they're out for two three hours with eight or nine other bikers enabling each other to act like a complete ding dong you are part of the problem if not all of it.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Because all and where I live it is no it is not a secret the kids are spoiled and they're gonna get what they want and they've always gotten what they want but now you're handing them a death machine.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: It's one thing when you buy your kid a Mercedes and I'm like wow he's got a nicer car than me that helps me sleep but it's different when you hand him a missile.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: I mean it's you might as well buy your son a weapon and be like hey don't shoot directly at anyone head up to the park with the other kids with the guns I mean it's it's not exactly the same but it is a weapon when used incorrectly.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah exactly it's lawn darts.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: It's like hey you can throw these just don't throw them straight up in the air and don't throw them at your friends.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: Well how long until the first kid gets stuck in the big toe with one and it's funny and now we're throwing them at each other and now we're maimed.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: Like he just it it's a cascading thing with kids.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: It's how it always went you know if somebody got a pellet gun you were going to shoot somebody with it to see what it did.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: You always somebody somebody in the group always shot someone with a pellet gun which started an absolute annihilation war.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: And then everyone also had and and so every group that had these people that we're talking about have someone who don't ride the bike right and it causes the snowball effect.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Same thing when you get a bunch of fireworks there were those of us who even though we talked on this show about times where you modified something and were lucky you didn't blow your hand off I also was not the kid who threw black black cats at you bang bang bang bang or like firing bottle rockets directly at your face but I had a bottle rocket blow up in my ear.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: I walked out I got out of a car and a guy just aimed a bottle rocket at me and it blew up in my eardrum.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Like I'm lucky I can hear to this day.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: And that's a bad kid amongst good kids that starts a bottle rocket war.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: So just just know that when you buy your kid that that's like buying them off season fireworks or lawn darts.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: I think lawn darts are a better representation than guns because I think any of these parents would be like well I wouldn't send them out with a gun.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: Well you're sending them out with something that can be extremely violent especially when you're going with no rules I just think the repercussions could be a little bit bigger for these kids.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Treat it like the type of violation where if you get busted two or three times you have to take a victim's panel.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: Back when I got an MIP for drinking underage, I had to go and watch videos of people dying in drunk driving car accidents for two hours to scare quote unquote scare you straight.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: I didn't get a DUI.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: I had a sip of alcohol and I had to watch people die on screen for two hours.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: Dude I got a ticket for following too closely and they showed an entire room full of us a picture of the body of a kid that had died that we all knew like less than six months after it.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: Like they I mean it's almost like evil what they'll do in there.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: But let me tell you it changed some people because we all knew that kid and we all knew that vehicle and we all knew exactly where that was on the road I can I can tell you it wasn't fun for me.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't recommend it for anybody but if you want to change some people's mindsets that's one way to do it.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: It's true.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: It's true.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: So just take care of yourself and try and I mean I have enough kids to tell you this watch out what they're doing.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: They're a child still that's just what that is like I don't leave my three year old in a pantry to crawl to the top shelf and fall off and die.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: I know what happens when you're left alone kids are rambunctious.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: I loved being a kid and a rebel without a cause I just like to think that most of the time I wasn't putting other people's lives at risk.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: So try and take it easy and bend here and everywhere else because it seems to be the thing anywhere a kid can afford it, they're doing it and they're also acting like a spoiled brat in the way that they're being in the road so shame on that behavior.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: That being said I am excited for football all weekend long college football professional football.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: I mean I there's soccer games for my kids Saturday and Sunday I'm extremely frustrated that it all has to start at the same time but I will have the mobile app.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: We will make it work and I I just I hope that you have a good time watching it all Marcus.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: Dude it it's it's weekends like this that I'm glad I'm not a parent Drew because if somebody came up and told me that I had to do anything other than watch the NFL on Sunday I would tell them about a real cool cable they should go scuba diving and touch at the bottom of Lake Washington.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah it really is I mean cook that fish buddy all right dude have a great rest of your day good luck to your fantasy team and um next year I want you guys at a bodybuilding competition.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: You got it.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: All right later dude
