Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Back here.
- 0:01Speaker 2: AFR Friday edition is a boy don want sigarbar musso
- 0:03Speaker 2: in from a SCONA. Scone is back Wednesday, so we'll
- 0:08Speaker 2: finish up the last hour and a half here. Take
- 0:11Speaker 2: Memorial Day off. I'll be back in the chair on Tuesday,
- 0:13Speaker 2: and then Scone is back on Wednesday. All right, let's
- 0:17Speaker 2: talk some black and gold. It's New Orleans Saints and
- 0:20Speaker 2: let's kind of dive into a conversation that's been asked
- 0:23Speaker 2: a lot.
- 0:26Speaker 1: CBS Sports.
- 0:27Speaker 2: They posed one question for each top twenty twenty five
- 0:33Speaker 2: draft pick from a year ago, and for Tyler Shuck.
- 0:37Speaker 1: This shouldn't be a surprise with the question.
- 0:41Speaker 2: It's the question everybody's asked, can Tyler Shuck show he's
- 0:47Speaker 2: a franchise quarterback?
- 0:49Speaker 1: So I want to dive into that a little bit
- 0:51Speaker 1: and what it actually and what that actually means.
- 0:54Speaker 2: What would you consider Tyler Shuck showing in twenty twenty
- 0:59Speaker 2: six that would give you the confidence and prove to
- 1:06Speaker 2: you that yes, he's the franchise quarterback for the New
- 1:08Speaker 2: Orleans Saints going for it.
- 1:10Speaker 1: That's where I.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Want to take this question. And that's not u this segment,
- 1:13Speaker 2: and that's not a rhetorical question.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I actually want you to answer.
- 1:16Speaker 2: You could text in four nine nine one four five,
- 1:20Speaker 2: send it to me on Twitter, buy you for YouTube chat.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I actually want feedback because I think there's two different
- 1:28Speaker 2: ways to look at this. Right, Tyler Shuck a year
- 1:32Speaker 2: ago finished second in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting,
- 1:36Speaker 2: completed sixty seven percent of his pass twenty three hundred yards,
- 1:39Speaker 2: ten touchdowns, six picks, the four and one record in
- 1:42Speaker 2: the last five games. That's what everybody points to. And
- 1:45Speaker 2: he did it with a mass unit around him. Basically,
- 1:49Speaker 2: the Saints were incredibly injured. I mean, you had Audric
- 1:52Speaker 2: estimate running for one hundred yards late in the season.
- 1:54Speaker 2: That's like, that's where you were the running back spot.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Chris Olave was your only receiver, and that's what set
- 2:03Speaker 2: the table now for this season, the expectation in this conversation.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So, I think there's two different ways to look at this.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Can Tyler Shuck become a franchise quarterback or show that
- 2:14Speaker 2: he's the franchise quarterback?
- 2:18Speaker 1: What do you need to see? I think there's two options.
- 2:21Speaker 2: One, he goes out there, has a great year, the
- 2:26Speaker 2: Saints win the division, and they go to the playoffs.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I think we could all agree if Tyler Shuck does
- 2:36Speaker 2: that in his first full season starting, we would all
- 2:38Speaker 2: look and go, Yep, he's the guy. He's the guy
- 2:42Speaker 2: for Kellen Moore's offense, he's the guy for this franchise
- 2:45Speaker 2: going forward. But let's be honest, that's a long shot.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Still have happened. Hey, the Saints are not the favorite
- 2:54Speaker 2: to win the division in Vegas. Their win total is
- 2:57Speaker 2: seven and a half and only favored in five games.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Even with their win total being seven and a half,
- 3:05Speaker 2: Vegas is telling you they're still a lot of losing
- 3:10Speaker 2: probably ahead for the New Orleans Saints in twenty twenty six.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So if that's your bar, right, if that's where you're
- 3:20Speaker 2: looking at Tyler Shuck and going for him to prove
- 3:24Speaker 2: to me he's the franchise quarterback, he needs to do that,
- 3:26Speaker 2: win the division, take you to the playoffs in his
- 3:27Speaker 2: first full season starting, You're probably going to be disappointed
- 3:34Speaker 2: because while the Saints did a lot offensively to help
- 3:36Speaker 2: Tyler Shuck, I have questions about the defense still to
- 3:40Speaker 2: Mario Davis is gone.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And he was still an extremely productive player. He was
- 3:47Speaker 1: a team leader for you, the team leader.
- 3:51Speaker 2: For you, with all due respect to kay Nellis, you
- 3:55Speaker 2: don't just walk in and replace that even with somebody
- 3:59Speaker 2: who ella was productive and you saw you know, uh
- 4:05Speaker 2: him in this in this you know franchise before with Davis, Like,
- 4:12Speaker 2: that's still really difficult to replace Cam Jordan. What is
- 4:16Speaker 2: his future hole It's a guy who had ten and
- 4:18Speaker 2: a half sacks a year ago or ten sacks a
- 4:20Speaker 2: year ago in a in a you know, veteran role.
- 4:24Speaker 2: But again, another team leader, Chase Young, Carl Granderson. You
- 4:28Speaker 2: bring in Wilson like, you look like you've done well there,
- 4:32Speaker 2: but you're still weak at cornerback. You weren't able to
- 4:35Speaker 2: address that in the you know, in the uh, in
- 4:40Speaker 2: the draft the way you wanted to.
- 4:41Speaker 1: You've done some made some moves in free agency, right.
- 4:45Speaker 2: With uh, with with Martin, but that's still a question
- 4:53Speaker 2: mark for me. And you know what, I think Brandon
- 4:55Speaker 2: Saley is a great coach. I think he's gonna have
- 4:57Speaker 2: those boys playing some really good defense at some point
- 4:59Speaker 2: this year. But that brings in the second option for
- 5:03Speaker 2: Tyler Shuck. Let's say Tyler Shuck goes out there, completes
- 5:10Speaker 2: sixty five percent or above of his passes, yet again
- 5:15Speaker 2: starting a full season, throws from more than three thousand yards,
- 5:20Speaker 2: I'd say thirty five hundred and up.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Touchdown to interception ratio.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Improves a little bit, touchdown number goes up, but you
- 5:31Speaker 2: don't win the division and you miss the playoffs because
- 5:35Speaker 2: you dropped the key game here or there, and maybe
- 5:40Speaker 2: your deficiencies defensively we're a little tougher, or.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Hell, your offensive line got hurt again.
- 5:49Speaker 2: But Tyler Shuck goes out there, puts up great numbers
- 5:52Speaker 2: the same time, a successful offensive year, but they fall
- 5:55Speaker 2: just short of the playoffs. I'll tell you right now.
- 6:00Speaker 2: For me, that would do it. I would leave that
- 6:05Speaker 2: season thinking, all right, no, they they got some holes
- 6:09Speaker 2: to fill around him. Still, but Tyler Shucks really got
- 6:14Speaker 2: something to him. Now you saw it in the back
- 6:16Speaker 2: half of his first year, and now you saw it
- 6:18Speaker 2: for a full year, and the numbers were there and
- 6:20Speaker 2: the production is there, and it didn't lead to all
- 6:22Speaker 2: the wins you wanted to. But it really wasn't on
- 6:26Speaker 2: Tyler Shuck that would give it to me. Tell me that,
- 6:33Speaker 2: all right, Yeah, you've got a guy there. He can
- 6:36Speaker 2: be the franchise quarterback that the Saints have been looking for.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Since Drew Brees retired. And I'll tell you right now,
- 6:47Speaker 2: While I think the Saints are more than capable of
- 6:49Speaker 2: winning the NFC South because the division just isn't very
- 6:52Speaker 2: good and you beat the Panthers last year who won it,
- 6:56Speaker 2: beat him twice actually, and buts you beat them, like,
- 7:03Speaker 2: While I think they're capable of doing it, I think
- 7:05Speaker 2: the latter scenario that we laid out is probably the
- 7:08Speaker 2: more likely scenario when you look at these early points
- 7:11Speaker 2: spreads and you look at their win total and you
- 7:13Speaker 2: get their odds to win the division. As we said,
- 7:15Speaker 2: Vegas is telling you there's still probably a lot of losing.
- 7:19Speaker 1: But can you get value out of that losing?
- 7:21Speaker 2: Specifically with Tyler Shuck, you fix everything around him offensively,
- 7:25Speaker 2: you feel he goes out has the great season.
- 7:28Speaker 1: With that you fall just short.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Now you really go in on defense, and you go
- 7:31Speaker 2: into the third year feeling really good that he's your
- 7:34Speaker 2: franchise quarterback and that maybe now you are the favorite
- 7:39Speaker 2: in the division. Both of those would work for me,
- 7:43Speaker 2: but I think the latter, the one we just discussed,
- 7:46Speaker 2: is more likely.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Let me know your thoughts, Jordan, Do you have a
- 7:49Speaker 1: thought there?
- 7:50Speaker 2: What does Tyler Shuck need to do to show you
- 7:53Speaker 2: that he is the franchise quarterback.
- 7:56Speaker 3: All I really need from Shuck this season, I just need.
- 8:00Speaker 3: I'm gonna say eight to nine wins. I'm not gonna
- 8:01Speaker 3: jump out out the that would probably win the division exactly.
- 8:05Speaker 3: You know, we're not asking much out of the NC South.
- 8:07Speaker 3: We're not asking Tyler Schuck to be on some Josh
- 8:09Speaker 3: Allen Lamar Jackson. I don't need that year two. I'm
- 8:12Speaker 3: more about the steady, gradual approach. He did a good
- 8:16Speaker 3: job and now you know, limiting the turnovers. You know,
- 8:18Speaker 3: you want to see a year or two leap, you know.
- 8:21Speaker 3: But I'm not over here like man, he needs to
- 8:24Speaker 3: jump out and become an MVP candidate. That's not where
- 8:26Speaker 3: I'm at with it. I don't think that that's what
- 8:28Speaker 3: this team needs exactly yet, because a tale that I
- 8:31Speaker 3: don't want the Saints to go down. I don't want
- 8:32Speaker 3: the Saints to be like the Washington Commanders. How Jayden
- 8:35Speaker 3: Daniels had they kind of oversee the expectations here one
- 8:38Speaker 3: and they just put everything in. All right, we gotta
- 8:39Speaker 3: go go for a year or two and you see
- 8:41Speaker 3: where at right now? You know they go sign on
- 8:42Speaker 3: these old guys and they can make a run. So
- 8:44Speaker 3: I don't want to rush the process. It's a process,
- 8:47Speaker 3: and I'm just more about the steady, gradual approach. I
- 8:50Speaker 3: feel like, if you just start the season. I know
- 8:52Speaker 3: it's the beginning of the season, but if you can
- 8:54Speaker 3: split one of those two games, I'd be huge. Then
- 8:57Speaker 3: I ain't gonna say I've seen enough, but like, all right,
- 8:59Speaker 3: we're going in the right direction. If you can split
- 9:01Speaker 3: between a Detroit and I think the second game was
- 9:03Speaker 3: the Ravens Detroit and the Ravens.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Yeah, if you can the road, both on the road.
- 9:06Speaker 3: So if you can start the season I zero and
- 9:08Speaker 3: two and Shuck shows you something one of those games.
- 9:10Speaker 3: I'm not asking for both of them, but if you
- 9:12Speaker 3: can split them, I can say we're moving in the
- 9:14Speaker 3: right direction.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Okay, so you're kind of in between the two scenarios.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I laid out yes, because I could pose it to
- 9:19Speaker 2: you and be like you said, eight or nine wins,
- 9:21Speaker 2: their wins till seven and a half. What if they
- 9:22Speaker 2: finished seven and ten, but the offense has a really
- 9:25Speaker 2: good year behind Tyler show.
- 9:26Speaker 3: It depends how it looks. I'll say that depends on
- 9:28Speaker 3: how that seven and ten looks like if they I
- 9:30Speaker 3: would accept that seven to ten. Ooh, I came to that.
- 9:33Speaker 3: I'm saying is I'm accepting the seven and ten. I
- 9:35Speaker 3: will accept that seven and ten if they start off
- 9:37Speaker 3: abysmal in the beginning of the year and somehow, some
- 9:39Speaker 3: way they it will be like a repeat of last year. Yeah,
- 9:42Speaker 3: but they just you know, start winning down the stretch
- 9:44Speaker 3: and then.
- 9:45Speaker 2: But but if if Shuck throws for over three thousand
- 9:48Speaker 2: yards improves on the touchdown, I'm moved, Like that's the
- 9:52Speaker 2: Then you look at it and you go, Okay, you
- 9:54Speaker 2: have a few more holes to fill, yes, and that
- 9:57Speaker 2: like I'd love eight or nine wins.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I think the seven and ten is the more likely scenario.
- 10:01Speaker 2: As we sit here right now, They'll look they haven't
- 10:04Speaker 2: even started OTAs they open O t as on Wednesday,
- 10:08Speaker 2: which is gonna be great and get to see him
- 10:10Speaker 2: out there again.
- 10:11Speaker 1: But it's just fascinating because again it's.
- 10:15Speaker 2: You can look at it from two different ways. What
- 10:17Speaker 2: does Tyler Shuck need to show you? We'll see what
- 10:21Speaker 2: he does. But one thing's for sure. Optimism is about
- 10:27Speaker 2: as higher around the Saints right now as it has been.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Since Sean Payton's last season. I think that's a fair assessment.
- 10:35Speaker 2: That's a good place to be after what a six
- 10:39Speaker 2: win season a year ago, five five series season a
- 10:44Speaker 2: year ago. It's right they lost that last game to
- 10:45Speaker 2: Atlanta that would have got kind of good.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Got the fourth place schedule, that's true.
- 10:49Speaker 2: You got the fourth place schedule and that look, that
- 10:52Speaker 2: could play into the eight or nine wins.
- 10:53Speaker 1: So it Man, it's gonna be fascinating.
- 10:55Speaker 2: It's fun to have these conversations around the Saints instead of, man,
- 10:58Speaker 2: what are they gonna fire?
- 10:59Speaker 1: Dennis
