- 0:08There are some episodes of Two Shot Tuesday you wait a week to
- 0:11see or hear. And there are some episodes of
- 0:14Two Shot Tuesday you've been excited about for the entire
- 0:17year. And this is one of those
- 0:19episodes. My name is Jason Riley.
- 0:21I'm here with Barry Nixon and the movie guy Rob Peetz to talk
- 0:25about an exciting cinematic event.
- 0:28Gentlemen, let me greet you both.
- 0:30Hello and welcome to our show. Well, hello to.
- 0:33Be with you, Jay. Nice.
- 0:36Good to see you. Robert it's like 2 guys have to
- 0:39talk and then it's do I wait? Do I wait, do it?
- 0:41And then everybody goes at the same time.
- 0:42That's classic podcast. That's what we.
- 0:44Expect Rob, what have you been up to since we last spoke?
- 0:47What haven't I been up to? Just craziness.
- 0:49It's it's craziness. I I mean, I see a movie every
- 0:52day, so there's that. Because I'm the movie guy.
- 0:54That's what I got to do. Yeah.
- 0:56Movie a day and also work. So it's a lot.
- 0:59It's a lot. Guys.
- 1:00Yeah, absolutely. That's me, Barry.
- 1:02How about you guys? What are you guys doing?
- 1:03What have you been? I'm doing the same thing, movie
- 1:05a day and working. That's all we do over here,
- 1:07yeah. That's all.
- 1:08I don't. Do a movie a day.
- 1:09I do a comic book a day and working and sometimes a movie.
- 1:13Yeah, I work that in when I can. That's that's just how exciting
- 1:16we are. But we need to get you to get a
- 1:18movie a day. I got to try it maybe, but
- 1:20that's the runtime is what kills me.
- 1:21The runtime I can't commit to sitting in one place for 90
- 1:24minutes plus. Well, guess what?
- 1:25The movie we're talking about today fits right in your suite.
- 1:29Wheelhouse, Jay. I come out of it just 129.
- 1:32Perfect. OK, I like this pretty good.
- 1:35We've got a format on the show. Why don't we start with the
- 1:37first shot of the night and then you guys can tell us what movie
- 1:39you saw and I will prod you with questions, as always.
- 1:43Rob, why don't you kick us off? What's your shot tonight?
- 1:46My shot is actually just more water, really.
- 1:48It's bubbly, but it's pomegranate blueberry.
- 1:51It's it's an interesting flavor smash up and it relates directly
- 1:54to the movie, which I'll explain in the next shot.
- 1:56OK, nice. Very cool.
- 1:58I'm sticking with tried and true.
- 2:00And Jay, you know, I've been so excited to see this return to
- 2:04our local Jameson Black Barrel and yourself.
- 2:07Yeah, I'm trying to get through the Whistler.
- 2:10I think the Whistler which we talked about, Yeah, last show,
- 2:16something like that. I can't remember when, but
- 2:17anyway, it's a tough one, but I'm doing the Whistler.
- 2:20Gentlemen, to your good health. Chinzano.
- 2:24Jay, that's the same reaction you had last.
- 2:26Week Sharp. Very sharp.
- 2:28Yeah. OK, Barry, you better take it.
- 2:30What are we talking? About today, All right, we are
- 2:32talking about Super Mario Galaxy, which is the sequel to
- 2:36Super Mario Brothers. It came out.
- 2:38Was it 2 years ago Robbie or just last year I think.
- 2:42It's who knows. Yeah, I'm somewhere in.
- 2:43There anymore? Yeah.
- 2:44Yeah, couple years. At the very longest, two years
- 2:47ago. Anyway, it has Chris Pratt
- 2:49returning as Mario and Charlie Day of Always Sunny in
- 2:52Philadelphia as Luigi and Jack Black plays.
- 2:56Was he Bowser? Bowser.
- 2:58I mean, it's loaded. It's.
- 2:59Yeah, it's loaded. We also have.
- 3:00It's a bit of a strange 1, though.
- 3:01You pointed this out, Rob, that Yoshi is voiced by Donald Glover
- 3:06and all he says is his own name. That's it.
- 3:08Yep. Like they got Donald Glover for
- 3:10that. Also, Keegan, Michael Key, I
- 3:13believe, has a role where he doesn't talk a lot, but he's in
- 3:15it. Yeah.
- 3:17They're happy to hear that. Anya Taylor Joy plays Peach,
- 3:20which is, you know, she has a pretty substantial role.
- 3:22And Alison Brie. Alison Brie, is it?
- 3:25Or Alice Brie Larson. Brie Larson, Yeah, yeah.
- 3:28She plays. What was it, Rosalina?
- 3:30Yeah, the other Princess. Yeah.
- 3:32Are these Albert? I didn't know there was.
- 3:33Like some of them are new, some of them are old.
- 3:35Yeah, some of them were part of the first one.
- 3:37And then then there's been a couple of new additions,
- 3:39including Yoshi and Rosalina. OK, well, what did you think?
- 3:43Take us through it. Take the experience.
- 3:45Even before the theater. I need to hear about how this
- 3:47came to be. Why Super Mario Brothers?
- 3:50I'm a little bit surprised. Barry, you yourself would want
- 3:52to go see an animated. Feature I'll let Barry take.
- 3:54Well, this one for sure, yeah. Yeah, I was happy to I was happy
- 3:57to go. I enjoyed the last one was, you
- 3:59know, Rob, say let's go. I mean, we I played Super Mario
- 4:02as a kid and great. These movies are fun on the big
- 4:05screen, especially in IMAX. Although one thing Rob noticed
- 4:09and I noticed is this movie, while shown in the IMAX theater,
- 4:12did not take up the entire screen.
- 4:14What? Yeah, this is a.
- 4:16Realm of projection, yeah. Yeah.
- 4:18So that was a little. Unfortunate.
- 4:20So it's not shot for IMAX or produced in IMAX.
- 4:23It was just they're not even on that beer and charged you IMAX
- 4:27prices. Yeah, that's.
- 4:28Correct. Yeah, that is disappointing
- 4:30right there. That is, Was there an audible
- 4:32groan from either one of you 2 gentlemen when that happened?
- 4:34When you noticed extra screen that you weren't.
- 4:36I mean, it came out pretty quickly.
- 4:37I was like, this, this, this ain't IMAX.
- 4:40This is just a 70mm projection on a big screen.
- 4:43So that's disappointing. This is what it is.
- 4:44All right, but who's like the first time, Rob, was your idea?
- 4:48I don't. I think we just kind of as, as a
- 4:50team decided that we should probably go see the second one
- 4:52since we we saw the first one and had fun with it.
- 4:55Yeah, I will go on the record and say that that Barry is not
- 4:58an animated film guy. He doesn't really like animated
- 5:01films. Computer animated films in
- 5:03general tends to avoid them. I think he's probably seen a
- 5:05few, but I know that's not his favorite genre.
- 5:07It's often my stance in recent years.
- 5:09Yes, over the years I think the Spider Man movies might have
- 5:13helped. And you know.
- 5:14Those were good. And Sausage Party.
- 5:16Oh my God, that is a That's a funny one, AJ, but we're getting
- 5:19off topic. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:20But still, it all ties to the whole animation thing, because I
- 5:22also would not think you would go to a theater to see it.
- 5:25You went there. How was the popcorn situation?
- 5:27In this case, you learned from the last because you didn't go
- 5:30to the VIP. So did you get what you wanted
- 5:32or did you? Have anyone I got what I wanted
- 5:33and all that extra fake butter that you can just from the
- 5:36dispenser just keep pressing that button until your heart's.
- 5:38Content. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:40Yeah, it was great. Dripping I.
- 5:42Went hot dog bag. What?
- 5:43Yeah, that's crazy. Yeah, I went full hot dog.
- 5:47I kind of just needed something because it was like a four.
- 5:50I think we saw a 450 show on a Friday.
- 5:52It was like I should probably eat something before this
- 5:54starts. So I grabbed something, I guess.
- 5:57I don't know. It was decent.
- 5:58It was a decent hot dog. I thought you might have had the
- 6:01fish because it was Good Friday, but you you pivoted to the
- 6:04Wiener. That's good meat.
- 6:05Yeah, I don't think there was a fish offering at the theater.
- 6:08It's not something that came out OK.
- 6:10Oh, you missed the halibut altogether.
- 6:12You didn't see that? No, there's no.
- 6:13Fish in a cone. Can you imagine the price of
- 6:16halibut in a theater? I mean, it's already on its own.
- 6:19It's like $75.00 at a theater. Absolutely.
- 6:22That'll be $100 for that. Fish and chips, please.
- 6:24Yeah, it's not out. No, but but.
- 6:26Imagine it in a cone. It'd be even more money.
- 6:30Yeah, and I would that's. A tartar way.
- 6:32On top, yeah. See, I'd swallow that down hole,
- 6:36yeah. I know you would.
- 6:37Yeah, okay, okay, before we get into the actual movie, sorry you
- 6:42took me back to We still haven't.
- 6:43Got that? It's kind of amazing.
- 6:45Before we get to the movie, 1 pro move Barry Nixon on the fake
- 6:49butter. I don't know if you've ever
- 6:50tried this, but I have done it. You get a.
- 6:52Packet of salt, and you put it with the butter it tastes like
- 6:55because it's kind of just wet the artificial topping, throw a
- 6:58little extra salt on there. It's like pure butter.
- 7:00I'm just telling. You heart attack city man.
- 7:02I say go for it. I mean, I'll be with you, so
- 7:04I'll just call an ambulance. Thank you.
- 7:07Yeah, that's great. Yeah.
- 7:08Yeah. It's not healthy for you, but do
- 7:09it anyway. OK.
- 7:10Let's hear about the movie itself.
- 7:12Take us. Yeah, Who wants to kick us off
- 7:15wrong? The movie, The movie is a kids
- 7:17movie. We found out fairly quickly
- 7:20there isn't much of A plot line on this particular one.
- 7:22The first one didn't have much of one either, but there was a
- 7:24bit of a origin story. So there was a little more of a
- 7:26plot line. This one is.
- 7:28Yeah, basically, I don't know, man.
- 7:30There was, there was. The plot was very thin, but not
- 7:33not in a bad way. It just didn't really need to be
- 7:35there. I guess you're just giving Mario
- 7:38and Co excuses to Mario. Mario them with their way
- 7:41through the worlds and see all sorts of cool visuals and kind
- 7:45of with the back story of of reuniting Rosalina with Peach
- 7:49with if anyone knows anything about the the background of
- 7:52those characters, they know that they're related.
- 7:53So that's kind of what this is, is kind of bringing them
- 7:56together for the first time. In a long time reunion story.
- 8:00Yeah, and there were kids in the theater.
- 8:03It was. Yeah.
- 8:04Not really. Maybe first, is it opening day?
- 8:07It was opening night, I believe, Yeah, but it was an afternoon,
- 8:10so there wasn't, no, I think it would have been probably packed
- 8:12at 8:00 PM or something. But it was a 450 show.
- 8:15So there were a couple of families there and probably like
- 8:18probably 30 people all in or something.
- 8:20Wasn't, wasn't packed. But we did notice the kids
- 8:22laughing a lot, so that was good.
- 8:24I noticed kid, kid laughter at places that I wasn't laughing
- 8:27in. So at least it was working for
- 8:29the kids and that that's kind of what matters, I guess, in a
- 8:31movie like this. Well, that's the target audience
- 8:34after all. Yeah, and I do think this was
- 8:36dumbed down. This was dumbed down.
- 8:38Yeah, this was. This wasn't quite like from.
- 8:40The original even. Yeah, I think the first one had
- 8:43appeal to kind of everyone. This one felt much more like a
- 8:46kids movie with visual feast for everyone kind of thing.
- 8:49So it was a beautiful animated illumination movie.
- 8:52You know, the guys that make Despicable Me and and Minions,
- 8:54Nintendo is smart for using them as their as their kind of
- 8:58animated people to make these movies because they do a good
- 9:02job and they know, they know the humor, they know what kids like,
- 9:04they know what people like. So they're kind of injecting a
- 9:07bunch of that stuff in. But yeah, I mean.
- 9:10Animation was super. Simple.
- 9:11Yeah. Beautiful.
- 9:12Yeah, it's really cool. Like moments and cameos of sort
- 9:15of taking you to like, sorry to what was it like the roulette?
- 9:17What was it like the casino and stuff like that.
- 9:20That was a really cool. Gambling.
- 9:22Yeah, it was fun. And the kids get them started
- 9:24early. Yeah.
- 9:25Yeah, yeah. You got it right, by the way.
- 9:28That was that was Lily Guzman in the role of that of that bad guy
- 9:32that was in the casino. Yeah, he was like the Toad bad
- 9:35guy that he was another one of the Koopas or something.
- 9:37I don't know. One of those.
- 9:39Some of the characters I wasn't familiar with because I I have
- 9:41not played every single Mario iteration that's ever been
- 9:43released. Yeah, the story was like Rob
- 9:46said, it was kind of dumbed down.
- 9:47There were a lot more like very childlike voiced characters that
- 9:51were not present in the first movie.
- 9:53But again, the target audience is definitely skewing younger,
- 9:56so that was cool. Yeah.
- 9:57The the story was just more like a it was a reunion.
- 10:01It was trying to get two sisters back together essentially is
- 10:03what it was with some fighting and some other stuff along the
- 10:06way. But some of the best sequences.
- 10:08And I leaned over a couple times to Rob during the movie to sort
- 10:11of point this out. And you, I think you sort of
- 10:13noticed it as well. Any of the scenes where there
- 10:14was like the cameras behind the characters and they're just kind
- 10:17of zooming through the landscape was just awesome.
- 10:21Like they're, they're flying through the air, they're running
- 10:24all over the place. Like it's just really cool.
- 10:26Just the way that you had a real sense of motion, which is cool.
- 10:29And it wasn't 3D, but it kind of at moments felt like it.
- 10:32Yeah, it was, it was very video gamey.
- 10:33It was, it was, it was a, it was a gamey gamified type movie.
- 10:38Yeah, it was good. I mean, it was.
- 10:39And they had some terrible, like old school.
- 10:42They had some old school footage that rob you said it wasn't
- 10:44actual game footage, but it looked like it.
- 10:46They had inserts from like Mario 2 and Mario 3.
- 10:50And like, you know, the old battles where it would be like
- 10:53Mario versus Bowser. And then he would have to do
- 10:55something that makes the bridge disappear and then he would just
- 10:58fall into the lava. Like they would insert some of
- 11:00those those scenes and I don't know, to my eye it looked like
- 11:03gameplay. But Rob's like, yeah, it just it
- 11:04was made to look like gameplay. But I test our movie guy, he's
- 11:08got an eye it. Was close enough.
- 11:10It was almost like they used that game Mario, Super Mario
- 11:13Creator, where you could kind of create your own level.
- 11:16So it had that old school look to it, but I think it was
- 11:19probably just made-up for the movie.
- 11:20But because they wanted to show you a fight sequence and then
- 11:23show you it from like a computer display of how a bad guy's
- 11:27looking at it on a computer display.
- 11:28And it's the old school video game look, right?
- 11:31That's a classic move. They do that all the time.
- 11:33Yeah. All right, we're going to do
- 11:35shot #2 does the celebration of you 2 seeing this movie and then
- 11:38do it. We're going to talk a little bit
- 11:40more about it and what you're hoping for and what you've got.
- 11:43First of all, Barry, what have you got?
- 11:45I'm sticking with the Jameson black barrel jam.
- 11:47Rob. Bubbly Blueberry Pomegranate.
- 11:49And the reason it ties to Mario is because I believe the box.
- 11:52I believe they're they're sponsoring it.
- 11:54The box has Mario and Luigi all over.
- 11:57It all right, I'm sticking with the the Whistler.
- 12:01OK, I hope this one is a little less chunky for you.
- 12:03Cheers. Cheers.
- 12:08OK, boy. That Whistler is more like a
- 12:10screamer. I got to tell you, you do not
- 12:12look like a happy man. It hits every part of your
- 12:14mouth. You can't make it jump over the
- 12:16tongue. If you try it's.
- 12:17Like an assault. It's like a reverse.
- 12:19Whistle, it's an assault. It's an internalized whistle.
- 12:21It's a backwards whistle up the ass, basically, is what it is.
- 12:24Yeah, yeah, it. Is.
- 12:25Tough. It is tough.
- 12:27OK, So what have I got to ask about Mario Brothers?
- 12:30I'm not sure. You've talked about the runtime.
- 12:32You've talked about the thin clean.
- 12:34Yep. Yet it was you were compelled to
- 12:37go after just seeing the first movie, so.
- 12:40Yeah, was it? Was it like, how much of A
- 12:42downgrade was it in terms of plot like the first one that
- 12:45good? They like, we got to go see the
- 12:46sequel and then to be so not disappointed, maybe
- 12:49disappointed, maybe just like to not get what you're wanting.
- 12:52Is it like a real step back? Maybe 25% less plot, something
- 12:56like that. Yeah, because you're not,
- 12:58there's no origin. Nice.
- 12:59You're really just kind of you guys just.
- 13:00Really want to go hang out together, Yeah.
- 13:02That was a Good Friday as well you have.
- 13:04To see a movie a day, you know, every day we're seeing a movie.
- 13:08This is one of those movies. That's all there is to do.
- 13:10Sometimes you. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:13I will, I will say that there was there was some cameos in the
- 13:15movie and I'm not going to give away too many of them.
- 13:17The only one I will give away is because they stupidly, in my
- 13:22mind, they have a poster for it. I mean, I couldn't believe they
- 13:24put a poster up for this. It's the biggest cameo in the
- 13:27movie is Fox McLeod Starflox from from the original Starflox
- 13:32games has a huge cameo in this movie and it plays a integral
- 13:36role in getting him in through the Galaxy.
- 13:38And they they, they put him on a poster in his own poster.
- 13:42So they kind of gave that away in, in the poster in the
- 13:45advertising. But other than that, there are
- 13:47definitely some other other cool cameos that that are for for
- 13:50fans of the game. Those are the things I enjoyed
- 13:53was seeing the sort of, you know, stuff for, for I worked
- 13:56for Nintendo at one point. So I know the, I know the.
- 13:58Stuff. Did they do anything?
- 13:59Did they do anything to connect it to the John Leguizamo and
- 14:03what's his name, Bob Haskins Movie.
- 14:05Not anything. Hoskins.
- 14:07Not anything like never a nod, don't even I've.
- 14:09Seen that in so long I I wouldn't know if they did or
- 14:12not. That's the thing, I think.
- 14:13There's a 4K release? It might have been, I don't
- 14:16remember in the first movie. I probably did.
- 14:19I don't remember if in the first movie they they tried using did
- 14:22they use jump boots or something to kind of a mild nod to the
- 14:25original movie where they had to use jump boots.
- 14:27I don't know. I could be the.
- 14:28Interest of this moving along, let's just say, yeah, yeah, they
- 14:31did. Yeah, they totally did.
- 14:33Yeah. Just in the interest.
- 14:34Totally did, man. Yeah, and you were right about
- 14:37the Star Fox cameo, by the way. That was voiced by Glenn Powell
- 14:40and he did a great job. He just, I thought it originally
- 14:42was Bradley Cooper, but it turned out to be Glenn Powell.
- 14:45He was great. Just gave that he had that right
- 14:47amount of SAS and he did help to drive the plot along to the
- 14:50extent that there was a plot. And Jack Black also, he was
- 14:53really fun as Bowser that like the beginning is kind of where
- 14:57he had his funny bits. But then as we kind of went on,
- 14:59it was more about his son. But.
- 15:01Bowser Junior. Yeah, so again, he kind of skews
- 15:06towards the kiddies, you know, because Bowser Junior needs to
- 15:10have his day in the sun, which he did.
- 15:12One thing Jack Black didn't do was was sing, and that was
- 15:15disappointing. He he he had a great song in the
- 15:17first one. Yeah, he did sing in this one,
- 15:20which was kind of weird. I was expecting him to bust out
- 15:23in the song at any given moment and it never happened.
- 15:25I think he might have something. Worked well, you think whatever
- 15:28worked well you, they do more of it, but they didn't.
- 15:31I want to hear. Let's go to star rating and
- 15:33final thoughts on this movie. Barry, why don't you kick us off
- 15:35with star rating? Star rating, I would say it's I
- 15:38mean, I it was enjoyable, but again, there wasn't really much
- 15:41beyond the visuals to hold your attention.
- 15:43So I 12, I'm going to, yeah, I'm going to say it's probably a 2.5
- 15:47out of five. Right.
- 15:49Not terrible. It looked great.
- 15:51There were lots of moments where I was like, oh, that's pretty
- 15:53cool. And the animation is absolutely
- 15:55beautiful. You can actually see, like,
- 15:57details on the skin and on their clothing, which is really hard
- 16:01to kind of render, I guess, in a in a animated sense.
- 16:04But they were able to do it. Yeah.
- 16:06And I thought the voice acting was great.
- 16:07Everyone who was in the film, they were good at what they were
- 16:11doing. All right.
- 16:12Yeah. Yep, Mr. Rob Petes.
- 16:15Well, I'm going to agree with Barry.
- 16:16It was a it was a 2 1/2 as far as movies are concerned is
- 16:18pretty average. But I would say for kids, it's
- 16:21maybe a three 3 1/2. I think for kids, kids will have
- 16:24fun with it. And I could, you know, just the
- 16:26laughter in the room from from the kids that were there, I
- 16:28think was enough to sort of make me feel like this is a a kids
- 16:31movie. I mean, more than I never
- 16:32thought that in the first one. In the first one, I thought this
- 16:34is for everyone. This one, I'm like, this is a
- 16:37kids movie. It's definitely more aimed at
- 16:38kids. They're trying to keep it.
- 16:40They're trying to keep it going with the the kid audience, which
- 16:42is, which is fine. I mean, it makes sense.
- 16:44Yeah, that's their bread and butter.
- 16:46That's what Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did.
- 16:48Like the first one was kind of kids, but it was darker.
- 16:50And then they lighten it right up for two.
- 16:51And then 3 was really. Yeah.
- 16:53So I think you do, you kind of start leaning into, you start
- 16:55selling some lunch boxes and you start leaning into that
- 16:58audience. All right.
- 16:59Also, but you know, I'm not sure about the budget, but budgets
- 17:01get better as well. Sorry, I was just budgets,
- 17:04budgets, budgets get lower on some of these other movies.
- 17:07With this one, the budget might have been the same.
- 17:09I don't know. Yeah, on the meeting, Ninja.
- 17:11Turtle, please follow. Oh yeah, that one there clearly
- 17:14got less and less because they went on to each movie.
- 17:16Rob, once again, thank you for coming here.
