- 0:15Welcome back listeners to Sandman Stories Presents.
- 0:19We are on the 5th and final installment of the Halloween
- 0:21series with two stories translated by Jurgen Hubert.
- 0:27There's some talk of death and spookiness, so I'd be cautious
- 0:30with the easily spooked. The first story is about a ship
- 0:34fare and goblin with plenty of examples, and the second story
- 0:38is what happens when a bad man is taken away by the devil.
- 0:41OK, let's get spooky. The Klebauterman.
- 0:47Some sailors believe in a ship spirit.
- 0:49The Klebauterman. In English we would call it a
- 0:51goblin of sorts. The following is set of them.
- 0:56If a mother slays her child and buries it beneath an oak tree,
- 0:59and if one of the planks from this tree are used to build a
- 1:01ship, then the soul of the dead child returns to that ship as a
- 1:04gremlin. As long as he knocks, he stays.
- 1:08However, once he starts making rasping noises, he will leave,
- 1:13and that is not a good sign. He is said to appear as a small
- 1:18boy dressed in Gray or blue. According to legend, whoever is
- 1:22born on the 22nd of February at midnight can see the goblin face
- 1:26to face. If a ship departs on a Monday or
- 1:30a Friday, then the ship's spirit has control over all the crew on
- 1:34board and fog, rain and bad weather will accompany the ship
- 1:38on its entire journey. If someone on board is going to
- 1:42die, a bluish light will constantly dance up and down and
- 1:46will appear in the masts and yards a few days prior.
- 1:50Then the boat goblin will soon come and fetch his victim, or so
- 1:53the sailors say. As long as such a ship spirit
- 1:56remains friendly with the crew, the ship will not sink and every
- 2:00journey will succeed. Everything which breaks during
- 2:04the day will be fixed by him during the night.
- 2:07For this reason he is also called Klutermann.
- 2:11He also prepares all sorts of work for the sailors, or even
- 2:13does it for them. If he is in a bad mood, he makes
- 2:17a terrible ruckus, throws around firewood, scrap wood and other
- 2:21things, knocks on the wall of the ship, obstructs the workers,
- 2:24and even gives sailors invisible slaps on their ears.
- 2:28It is said that he is called a goblin after this ruckus.
- 2:33If he makes too much noise, or if he shows himself one night
- 2:36while sitting on the top of the yard next to the mast and sails,
- 2:40then this is a terrible sign, and the sailors fear that their
- 2:43ship will soon come to an end. Shortly before the ship sinks,
- 2:49the goblin appears before the captain, bids him farewell, and
- 2:52then flies away before his eyes. One such goblin once dwelled on
- 2:58a ship. He pranked the sailors in all
- 3:00sorts of ways and disturbed the sailors at night when they
- 3:02rested, but he usually remained invisible.
- 3:07Only once did he appear before the ship's Carpenter.
- 3:10The latter immediately grabbed a piece of firewood and threw it
- 3:12at the spirit. It hit the spirit, which looked
- 3:15like a small fat man, and broke his leg.
- 3:19The next morning, the Carpenter likewise broke his leg in an
- 3:21inexplainable manner, and at the same moment, laughter echoed
- 3:25down from the hold. The goblin had avenged himself.
- 3:31Once a sailing ship was on a long journey in the middle of
- 3:34the ocean. The crew were doing their chores
- 3:37and the captain was in his cabin.
- 3:39Suddenly he emerged on the deck and shouted towards the cabin.
- 3:42Boy, bring me a bottle of wine and two glasses. 2 glasses,
- 3:48Captain. The surprise boy asked.
- 3:50The captain ordered him to go and do as he was told.
- 3:53When the boy entered the cabin with the bottle and the glasses,
- 3:57the ship's spirit was sitting with the captain and they spoke
- 3:59together. The captain poured for him and
- 4:02they drank. The captain furthermore ordered
- 4:05a decent snack. But before the cabin boy went to
- 4:08the cook, he first observed the goblin closely through the
- 4:11keyhole, and when he returned with the requested food, he
- 4:15could not refrain from secretly taking apart for himself.
- 4:19In the evening, he stood in the dark corner of the deck to eat
- 4:22the stolen snacks. Then he received such a powerful
- 4:27slap from an invisible hand that he fell down.
- 4:31When they heard him scream, the sailors ran towards him, found
- 4:35the snacks, and the boy had to confess.
- 4:37Now the crew knew who had taken the slap.
- 4:42Once a cabin boy from Blankanese kept watch from the crow's nest
- 4:46as the ship approached Hilgoland.
- 4:49Suddenly he dropped down from the crow's nest with a lot of
- 4:51screaming and could not utter a single word.
- 4:54When he was questioned about this the next morning, the
- 4:57helmsman sent him up to the rigging.
- 5:00As soon as he was up there, he dropped backwards from the
- 5:03crow's nest and broke a leg. He said that he had seen the
- 5:07white figure of the bow spirit on the previous evening, and the
- 5:10next morning he had seen it again up in the rigging.
- 5:13He had his accident because of this, but this figure had been
- 5:16none other than the Klebauterman.
- 5:20Once a ship having reached its harbour after a long journey in
- 5:24the evening, a sailor was standing on the deck and
- 5:26suddenly heard a delicate voice which was directed to a nearby
- 5:29ship. Did you have a good journey?
- 5:34Asked the voice from the port side.
- 5:37Yes, but I had a lot of work. If I hadn't have been there, the
- 5:41ship would have sunk. But I don't want to stay here.
- 5:45The captain and the sailors described a fast and easy
- 5:47journey to the diligence alone and forgot me.
- 5:51I will leave the ship tonight. The sailor now knew that two
- 5:56goblins had been talking to each other and that good luck would
- 5:59leave his ship the next morning. He left and looked for another
- 6:03ship to join. His old ship left for the ocean
- 6:07sometime later, but it did not reach its destination.
- 6:13Once a sailor from Delve was on the ocean with his ship.
- 6:17His son was standing behind the wheel.
- 6:20Then the goblin appeared at the bow of the ship, walked across
- 6:23the deck and carefully inspected everything.
- 6:27Finally he approached the sun, and without speaking a word, he
- 6:30put his hand on the wheel. Then he walked back across the
- 6:34deck and vanished. The ship sank on that very same
- 6:38night, but the sailor and his son were able to save
- 6:41themselves. Once a sailor from Frederick's
- 6:46home was moored at Rendingsburg with his ship.
- 6:49The crew was on board and everything was ready for
- 6:51departure. Suddenly an enormous ruckus
- 6:55emerged from the hold. This was a terrible omen.
- 6:58It could only come from the club outer man.
- 7:01All sailors except the cook left the ship.
- 7:03The skipper had to hire another crew.
- 7:06Then the ship sailed away. But it sank in Skagrak between
- 7:09Denmark and Sweden with all hands.

- 7:37OK, and story #2 the ship from hell.
- 7:43There have long been complaints that the Chancellor serving the
- 7:45Lords of Ephrasia did not work to the Land's wealth, but to its
- 7:49woe. But the reign of not one of them
- 7:52has ended with such hearty cries of farewell as Chancellor
- 7:56Eustace von Vetter. Vetter was a true plague, a
- 8:01scourge on his subjects. The people of Harland, the
- 8:04stepchildren of the East Frisian Noble House, suffered especially
- 8:07under his rule. Therefore, a heavyweight was
- 8:11lifted from their hearts when they heard the news.
- 8:14The Chancellor's black soul had left his body and gone to where
- 8:17it belonged. However, the following tale is
- 8:21told about the death and his journey to the hereafter.
- 8:25During the night when the chancellor was lying in his
- 8:27deathbed, the devil appeared and demanded from the dying man's
- 8:31family that they should leave, as he alone had the right to
- 8:34receive his soul and lead it to hell.
- 8:38After this was done, the devil snapped the neck of the helpless
- 8:41Chancellor, pulled his soul out of his throat and flew away with
- 8:45it into the air towards the coast, where the ship of Hell
- 8:47was waiting for its departure. At this time nobody in Harlan
- 8:54knew about the death of Vedder, but in the morning sailors from
- 8:58the islands of Langegug and Spikerrug appeared in the
- 9:00harbour of Harlinger Seal and reported with deeply disturbing
- 9:03frowns. During the night we were on the
- 9:07Wadden Sea trawling our Nets and slowly moved towards the coast
- 9:12while fishing. When it was midnight, a
- 9:15completely black ship sailed past us.
- 9:17It had full sails that were black as well, and it sailed
- 9:21directly against the wind while not making any sound.
- 9:25There was a strange activity on board, and even though it was
- 9:29the darkest, we were still able to see the crew clearly.
- 9:33They consisted of many hundreds of devils moving about in their
- 9:36tasks, both on the deck and in the rigging, and behind the
- 9:40wheel. There was a devil who was more
- 9:42terrible incontinence than the others.
- 9:46In his terrible claws he held a white thing, which wind and rise
- 9:50back and forth, and occasionally cried out loud when Satan
- 9:54pinched it. We were terribly afraid when our
- 9:58ships were first tossed to the side and then pinched in place
- 10:01as if bewitched. Then a shrill voice called out
- 10:04to us. Tell your compatriots that the
- 10:08devil has fetched the Chancellor this night.
- 10:12And then the devil's ship was suddenly out and beyond on the
- 10:16high seas, and a mocking laughter arrived with us from a
- 10:20great distance and we hurriedly moved to get away from this
- 10:28haunted place. And there was great joy in the
- 10:32land after hearing the news and even people today say great
- 10:37justice was done to the Chancellor.
