- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, everyone, It's Alex S. Garrett, host of One Look
- 0:08Speaker 1: Up with Alex Garrett aka One Look Up Alex. Excited
- 0:11Speaker 1: to have you for a year thirteen of this podcast.
- 0:13Speaker 1: We've gotten through twelve amazing years thanks to you. Here's
- 0:17Speaker 1: to Lucky thirteen. Team USA is on the way to
- 0:22Speaker 1: DC right now for the State of the Union, the
- 0:25Speaker 1: men's hockey team, and they're facing backlash for going. And
- 0:30Speaker 1: let me tell you, I don't care who's in office,
- 0:35Speaker 1: who's the commander in chief. To be invited is an
- 0:38Speaker 1: honor no matter who it is, and to accept it
- 0:43Speaker 1: and to go and the excitement they had should it
- 0:50Speaker 1: not be backlash worthy? So you're not gonna be proud
- 0:56Speaker 1: of Team USA because they're going to State of Union
- 0:59Speaker 1: or to come on, we're better than that in America,
- 1:04Speaker 1: aren't we? And just like that, this team us to
- 1:08Speaker 1: say victory has become a news story on the One
- 1:11Speaker 1: Look Up Alex News. I wanted to go there real
- 1:13Speaker 1: quick because sports and news intersect itself, and my thought
- 1:20Speaker 1: is this is a sports story first and foremost. The
- 1:24Speaker 1: politicization of this is absolute crap here on the One
- 1:26Speaker 1: ing Up Network. And I'm happy the guys took Trump
- 1:31Speaker 1: up on his offer to go there. But I want
- 1:34Speaker 1: to talk about something else here on the one leg
- 1:36Speaker 1: Up Alex News because Newsday laid it all out for
- 1:39Speaker 1: US five elections that'll make a difference in Congress. I
- 1:43Speaker 1: want to get to that today on the willing Up Network.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Here's what Billy House Newsday has to write. By the way,
- 1:52Speaker 1: just subscribe to the news Day Digital Access so we'll
- 1:55Speaker 1: get some news from Newsday moving forward here on the
- 1:58Speaker 1: one with Goop Alex network. Anyway, what he writes, his
- 2:01Speaker 1: Long Island and other parts of New York State are
- 2:03Speaker 1: among the critical battlegrounds this fall for party control of
- 2:07Speaker 1: the US House. Now, of course, we're in the midterms,
- 2:10Speaker 1: and I think President Trump's speech tonight will be surrounding
- 2:15Speaker 1: that as well, and how the Republicans need to maintain
- 2:19Speaker 1: or his fake could be in the balance as far
- 2:22Speaker 1: as not being impeached. If there's a Republican control, if
- 2:25Speaker 1: there's democratic control, I do believe there's a threat of that.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And if you want this the Cliff notes, there are
- 2:33Speaker 1: four New York congressional districts, potentially a fifth depending on
- 2:37Speaker 1: the final court ruling, which are viewed by independent forecasters
- 2:40Speaker 1: as key swing state A districts in the midterms. Democrats,
- 2:44Speaker 1: according to House need just three districts and undred and
- 2:48Speaker 1: the four hundred and thirty five member chamber to flip
- 2:50Speaker 1: the House majority that Republicans hold with a slim two
- 2:55Speaker 1: twenty to two fifteen edge right now, crediting the three
- 3:01Speaker 1: empty seats to the party that previously held them. And
- 3:06Speaker 1: of course, as everybody knows that the Democrats take over
- 3:09Speaker 1: the House, this could be enormous for Trump, impeding his
- 3:15Speaker 1: agenda investigations, and even Trump has even said impeaching him now.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Democrats take over the House would carry enormous consequences for Trump.
- 3:24Speaker 1: As I read, and here's the four that really are
- 3:30Speaker 1: being looked at. District four. The twenty twenty sixth race
- 3:35Speaker 1: for this Democrat held Long Island seed has wide we
- 3:38Speaker 1: been seen as a toss up and one of the
- 3:40Speaker 1: nation's most competitive contests. It lies entirely within Nasau County.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Republican former Rep. Anthony d. Esposito has been anticipated to
- 3:50Speaker 1: take on Democratic freshman Laura Gillen in Rockville Center, but
- 3:58Speaker 1: as of this publishing in last week's Newsday, DSBO City
- 4:05Speaker 1: has not said whether he's actually running gillan on CIA
- 4:08Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four by two point three percentage points.
- 4:11Speaker 1: So that's District four, Rockville Center District three, which of
- 4:19Speaker 1: course was the I believe George Santos seat that Tom
- 4:27Speaker 1: Swazi won back. The gloves are already off in this
- 4:30Speaker 1: Loland district, which includes parts of Nasa County and Suffolk
- 4:34Speaker 1: and a selection of queens. Swazi, who I happen to
- 4:38Speaker 1: think is a very centrist guy and may not embark
- 4:42Speaker 1: on the impeachment like his far left colleagues, but we'll
- 4:45Speaker 1: have to see, is facing a potential racist fall against
- 4:49Speaker 1: mich La Petrie, the former state assembly who could actually
- 4:52Speaker 1: face the GOP primary. First Lapatrie of Farmingdale came closely
- 4:56Speaker 1: than expected in twenty four, only losing a Swazi by
- 4:59Speaker 1: four percentage points, well three percentage points because Trump carried
- 5:05Speaker 1: the district this time around with Blakeman at the ballot.
- 5:10Speaker 1: At the top of the GOP ticket, of course, Bruce
- 5:12Speaker 1: Blakeman is running for governor. Look for D three to
- 5:16Speaker 1: maybe flip. We'll have to see now what they're saying
- 5:21Speaker 1: here is another toss up contest is in District seventeen.
- 5:28Speaker 1: The race in the northern suburbs of the New York
- 5:30Speaker 1: City straddling the Lower Hudson Valley, was recently shifted by
- 5:34Speaker 1: Cook from lean Republican to toss up contest. That's because
- 5:41Speaker 1: Mike Lawler's there. Mike Lawler has a solid foothold in
- 5:44Speaker 1: this district. That outlook became even before it was decided
- 5:50Speaker 1: that several Democratic candidates would want to face off in
- 5:55Speaker 1: the general election. But I think Lawler could maintain that citty.
- 5:58Speaker 1: He's got a very good report, he's well liked up there,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and he could win again. He could win reelection for
- 6:05Speaker 1: Congress a third term. By the way, and Lawler, who
- 6:14Speaker 1: was considering a bid for governor, well, he was sort
- 6:17Speaker 1: of looking out for the party, not his own interests,
- 6:22Speaker 1: because he wants to protect its hold in this tough
- 6:25Speaker 1: district of seventeen where Democrats how hold a voter advantage,
- 6:29Speaker 1: and he's shown he can protect the GOP line in
- 6:34Speaker 1: District seventeen. So there's that, all right, District nineteen. This
- 6:39Speaker 1: seems in the weeds, But trust me, if you're in
- 6:41Speaker 1: any of these districts, maybe you need to know this
- 6:44Speaker 1: that your district in nineteen is held by the Democrats.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Leans Democratic as refreshman Josh Reilly of Ithaca flipped the
- 6:57Speaker 1: scene in twenty twenty four by defeating Mark Mullen, a
- 7:00Speaker 1: friend of this podcast and just a good guy overall.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Trump endorsed Lapetrie. He's also going to endorse and has
- 7:11Speaker 1: endorsed Pete Oberaker in District nineteen and attacked Riley as
- 7:17Speaker 1: a true radical left extremist. We know the values of
- 7:20Speaker 1: central New York, so Trump has weighed in on this
- 7:23Speaker 1: race District nineteen, which represents the Finger Lakes, Southern Tier,
- 7:27Speaker 1: Mohawk Valley, Capital Region, and the Catskills. When I first
- 7:31Speaker 1: saw this in the news Day, I was very drawn
- 7:33Speaker 1: to it because, Hey, I talk about how Texas could
- 7:36Speaker 1: be a very very big flip. If this tall rico
- 7:42Speaker 1: can actually outlast Jasmine Crockett in the primary and then
- 7:47Speaker 1: knock out either Cornin or Paxton. Well, I think on
- 7:51Speaker 1: the local level, these should be highlighted as well. On
- 7:55Speaker 1: the very local level, these districts should be highlighted because
- 7:57Speaker 1: when you vote this November, you're gonna make a difference,
- 8:03Speaker 1: and so why not be informed when you head to
- 8:05Speaker 1: the polls and then District eleven Republican. Hell, maybe we
- 8:09Speaker 1: withdraw redrawn and this one the eleventh district Staten Island
- 8:15Speaker 1: Nicole Maliatakas Rep. Malia Takas could be fighting for this
- 8:21Speaker 1: seat if the lines are redrawn. Mal Takas has taken
- 8:25Speaker 1: this fight to the Supreme Court on Thursday to block
- 8:27Speaker 1: a Manhattan judges' order to redraw her Conductor district. We
- 8:30Speaker 1: all know why they do it, right, to gain advantage,
- 8:33Speaker 1: have one leg up in the political system by having
- 8:36Speaker 1: the lines redrawn. I think it's pretty corrupt, but that's
- 8:42Speaker 1: the way the Democrats have one leg up by redrawing
- 8:45Speaker 1: everything consistently and constantly. There are other districts that have
- 8:51Speaker 1: been potentially competitive, have the shifted being saved Democratic Hudson
- 8:55Speaker 1: Valley based District eighteen by Democrat Pat Ryan and the
- 8:59Speaker 1: Central New York CD twenty two held by Freshman Rep.
- 9:03Speaker 1: John Mannion of Gettis. Still those races will be closely watched,
- 9:09Speaker 1: So eighteen twenty two, eleven, nineteen, seventeen, three and four
- 9:17Speaker 1: are all to watch. I presume Lawler and Swazi will
- 9:22Speaker 1: keep their seats. Those are the two most out there
- 9:26Speaker 1: vocal people for their parties, and they have pretty much
- 9:30Speaker 1: a good foothold but the rest, I mean, Mali Takis
- 9:33Speaker 1: should be a cinch if her district lines aren't redrawn.
- 9:40Speaker 1: But there you go. Maybe talking about this will help
- 9:43Speaker 1: you know more as we head into midterms twenty twenty six.
- 9:47Speaker 1: It's gonna be a big one. It's gonna be a
- 9:50Speaker 1: big one. And I think ultimately the government shutdown which
- 9:59Speaker 1: was forty three days, and we saw what happened when
- 10:03Speaker 1: the seven Democrats broke rigs and voted with the Republicans.
- 10:08Speaker 1: How they were all of a sudden saying on the
- 10:10Speaker 1: far left, oh, these guys should be primary for by partsnship.
- 10:15Speaker 1: But the Democrats did drag that on. They were focused
- 10:19Speaker 1: on the illegal immigrants. I'm just gonna say that those
- 10:24Speaker 1: forty three days and not the American people. Should there
- 10:28Speaker 1: be a democratic control everything to keep Trump in check,
- 10:32Speaker 1: because I mean, that's the other flip of the coin here,
- 10:36Speaker 1: that's the other flip the coin I've been wrapping my
- 10:40Speaker 1: brain around, because if the Republicans keep getting elected, there
- 10:43Speaker 1: will be no checks and balances because every time someone
- 10:46Speaker 1: tries to check Trump, he puts them in their place.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And I believe strongly no matter who's in office of
- 10:56Speaker 1: checks and balances, I will always say that that is
- 10:59Speaker 1: an American founding ideal. Checks and balances matter. I don't
- 11:06Speaker 1: think they'll get away with impeaching him fully, but checks
- 11:09Speaker 1: imbalances matter. And I don't want to go far left either.
- 11:15Speaker 1: So it's like a bind here because I sit here
- 11:19Speaker 1: and once the Republicans constantly agree with the guy the president,
- 11:26Speaker 1: and I don't think that's right either. We need to
- 11:29Speaker 1: have a balance in this country. I will be excited
- 11:36Speaker 1: for Team USA that they are in fact going to
- 11:39Speaker 1: the White House tonight to celebrate their goal. They're going
- 11:42Speaker 1: to State even tonight. And I really believe Trump's messaging
- 11:46Speaker 1: has to be on preserving the Republican's advantage in the
- 11:52Speaker 1: House and Senate. He has to do that in addition
- 11:54Speaker 1: honoring two hundred and fifty years with America, and as
- 11:57Speaker 1: I said, there wouldn't be a better present to preside
- 12:00Speaker 1: over this in the current state than Trump. I believe
- 12:04Speaker 1: he's the guy to do this, to provide over a
- 12:06Speaker 1: year two fifty that I will say, but if I
- 12:10Speaker 1: look at the collective, and if I look at the
- 12:14Speaker 1: collective and say, hmm, isn't this country founded and ideals
- 12:22Speaker 1: founded on checks and balances? Isn't that what it's supposed
- 12:26Speaker 1: to be. Well, I always find it interesting when the
- 12:33Speaker 1: opposite party runs the Senate and Congress, because I think
- 12:37Speaker 1: there is a checks and balance is there? And sometimes
- 12:41Speaker 1: normally when you have a Republican controlled House, Republican control Senate,
- 12:47Speaker 1: and a Republican in the White House, typically you'll still
- 12:52Speaker 1: find those checks and balances. But under Trump it's just
- 12:54Speaker 1: not been there. And I have to call a spade
- 12:55Speaker 1: of spade. I have to call a spade in spade
- 12:59Speaker 1: and say, look for the good of the country. And
- 13:04Speaker 1: I don't want him impeached, but I think they could.
- 13:07Speaker 1: They will try it. I don't think they'll win. But
- 13:10Speaker 1: what if there is a checks and balances I think
- 13:18Speaker 1: that would in year two fifty? Help? Does that have
- 13:26Speaker 1: one leg up to go another to fifty? And that's
- 13:33Speaker 1: where I stay on that. So if Republicans maintain control,
- 13:37Speaker 1: may they have checks and balances on their present If
- 13:41Speaker 1: the Democrats take control, may they have checks and may
- 13:45Speaker 1: they perform their checks and balances, but not go too
- 13:50Speaker 1: far left, because that's not how our country is either.
- 13:53Speaker 1: See I'm a liber and I could see what's best
- 13:56Speaker 1: for the country, and in this state, where the Republicans
- 14:02Speaker 1: always seemingly agree with the guy. That's not healthy. That's
- 14:06Speaker 1: not healthy for us. We need people in there who
- 14:12Speaker 1: are going to challenge and you know, hold accountable the
- 14:26Speaker 1: present when he makes a mistake or when he screws up.
- 14:34Speaker 1: And right now the GOP are not strong about it
- 14:44Speaker 1: and the Democrats don't look at all put together ahead
- 14:50Speaker 1: of the midterms, and that government shutdown showed everything I
- 14:54Speaker 1: needed to see about where we are in the House
- 14:57Speaker 1: and Senate. Didn't it show you that? So why not
- 15:01Speaker 1: shake it up? Why not have one leg up for America?
- 15:04Speaker 1: Even if not giving complete control to one party, just
- 15:10Speaker 1: having some semblance of checks and balances would make me
- 15:14Speaker 1: feel more comfortable as we hit year two fifty in
- 15:19Speaker 1: the United States of America.
