- 1:57Speaker 1: let's get to my first guest, team cap and four
- 2:01Speaker 1: time pro bowler Orlando Brown Junior. Orlando, let's start with
- 2:06Speaker 1: your role as a captain and a veteran leader on
- 2:08Speaker 1: this team. What's the message to your teammates after two
- 2:11Speaker 1: tough weeks?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, it's always hard in this league, man,
- 2:14Speaker 2: losing games no matter when they happen, how they happen,
- 2:17Speaker 2: back to back. But the message is simple, man, we
- 2:19Speaker 2: got to keep fighting. We got a lot to play for.
- 2:21Speaker 2: I've been in a much worser spots than this, believe
- 2:24Speaker 2: it or not, man, But being in this position, being
- 2:27Speaker 2: able to have a chance to go out here and
- 2:28Speaker 2: win in front of these fans is what's important.
- 2:30Speaker 3: So that's what we'll be starving for.
- 2:32Speaker 1: We scored thirty one points in the Jacksonville win, but
- 2:36Speaker 1: over the last couple of weeks, it's been hard getting
- 2:38Speaker 1: the ball into the end zone. Where does fixing the
- 2:40Speaker 1: offense start?
- 2:42Speaker 3: I think it always starts in the trenches.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Man.
- 2:44Speaker 2: You know, it's on us to create those opportunities for
- 2:47Speaker 2: our offense, man, no matter what it is. And that's
- 2:50Speaker 2: just my opinion, you know, I think it really comes
- 2:53Speaker 2: down to us handling businessman, and being able to create
- 2:56Speaker 2: bigger holes in the run game, hold on to our
- 2:58Speaker 2: blocks longer in the pass game, whatever it takes.
- 3:01Speaker 1: You've got the highest grade among the offensive lineman according
- 3:04Speaker 1: to Pro Football Focus on the team, your one spot
- 3:06Speaker 1: behind Tristan Wurfs for what that's worth as a left tackle.
- 3:10Speaker 1: But how do you feel about your play? I know
- 3:11Speaker 1: you have very high standards for yourself.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah, no, man, I mean, you know, the Minnesota game
- 3:16Speaker 2: was one of my rougher games I think I've had
- 3:18Speaker 2: as a bangle. But other than that, other than that,
- 3:21Speaker 2: you know, I feel like I've done a pretty good job,
- 3:24Speaker 2: you know, making sure that you know, guys like you know,
- 3:26Speaker 2: the Josh Allen Hines when we played him, he doesn't
- 3:28Speaker 2: have a big impact on the game, Nick Benito when
- 3:31Speaker 2: he's on my side, making sure he doesn't have a
- 3:32Speaker 2: big impact on the game.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You know.
- 3:34Speaker 2: But there are so many other areas that I'm continuing
- 3:36Speaker 2: to improve, like my run game, finishing more, being more violent,
- 3:40Speaker 2: and helping us create those explosive plays. But you know, overall, man,
- 3:44Speaker 2: the wait that I see it hasn't been enough for
- 3:45Speaker 2: us to win. And you know, that's what it comes
- 3:47Speaker 2: down to me, you know, just me playing playing as
- 3:50Speaker 2: good as I need to for us to win as
- 3:51Speaker 2: many games and score as many points as possible.
- 3:53Speaker 1: We're chatting with Orlando brown Junior. If you take away
- 3:56Speaker 1: a couple of Jake Browning scrambles last week, iveraged four
- 4:00Speaker 1: yards of carry on twelve runs. It's improvement. Did you
- 4:04Speaker 1: see positive steps?
- 4:06Speaker 3: I did?
- 4:06Speaker 2: I did, Man, I've seen guys finishing, I've seen guys
- 4:09Speaker 2: getting to the second level and you know, staying connected
- 4:12Speaker 2: to their blocks. I saw Chase being able to not
- 4:15Speaker 2: get touched about three or four yards into his run.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So we got to continue to create more of those
- 4:19Speaker 2: opportunities when they call our number up front.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Two rookies started on the offensive line last week. That'll
- 4:24Speaker 1: be the case again this week against Detroit. Last week
- 4:28Speaker 1: was a primetime game in Denver against the top ranked
- 4:31Speaker 1: pass rush in the NFL. How challenging is that for
- 4:34Speaker 1: a couple of rookies.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Extremely challenging, man, But I think they answered the bill man.
- 4:39Speaker 2: You know, we've got two great guys, two great young men,
- 4:41Speaker 2: and Jalen Rivers and Dylan Fairchild. They've come in from
- 4:44Speaker 2: day one and done all the right things and earn
- 4:46Speaker 2: this opportunity to be the guys at those positions in
- 4:48Speaker 2: my opinion, so man, we hold them to a high standard,
- 4:51Speaker 2: they hold themselves to a higher standard, and in my opinion,
- 4:54Speaker 2: they're doing great jobs.
- 4:56Speaker 1: You didn't just say good players, you said two great
- 4:58Speaker 1: young men. Does that stand out to you about Dylan
- 5:01Speaker 1: and Jalen?
- 5:01Speaker 3: It does? It does?
- 5:02Speaker 2: Manager Sarah upbringing. So I think show in their everyday
- 5:06Speaker 2: consistency of character, their attention to detail, their work ethic,
- 5:10Speaker 2: all the all of the right things.
- 5:11Speaker 1: You have a new offensive line coach this year in
- 5:13Speaker 1: Scott Peters. His system is different from his predecessor, Frank Pollack.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Are there some growing pains when the change is that significant?
- 5:21Speaker 3: Definitely, man.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I think there's new techniques that have to be learned,
- 5:24Speaker 2: you know, even some new run concepts we've been running
- 5:26Speaker 2: this year that we're still I think getting a little
- 5:28Speaker 2: bit of a better feel for.
- 5:29Speaker 3: But yeah, there definitely are.
- 5:31Speaker 1: You've been a mentor to the other tackle a Marius
- 5:34Speaker 1: Mims from day one. He's still only twenty two years old.
- 5:37Speaker 1: What are you saying in a Marius at this stage
- 5:39Speaker 1: of his second season.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yeah, no, man, I think he's doing a really good job.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Man's he's only gotten better from last year in my opinion,
- 5:45Speaker 2: and he's going to continue to get better. You know,
- 5:47Speaker 2: he's got a great mindset, man, coming to work every
- 5:49Speaker 2: day being the same person, working, working his tail off
- 5:52Speaker 2: to get better, you know, working to get his full
- 5:55Speaker 2: work right, his timing right off the snap, all the
- 5:57Speaker 2: right things.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Man.
- 5:58Speaker 2: So I'm excited. I believe it's a season goes on,
- 6:00Speaker 2: He's only going to get better.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Orlando, you face the highest scoring team in the league
- 6:04Speaker 1: this week in Detroit. It's hard for me to picture
- 6:07Speaker 1: thirteen to ten win. It probably has to be something
- 6:09Speaker 1: more like Week two when you beat Jacksonville thirty one
- 6:12Speaker 1: to twenty seven. Because of that, do you feel imperative
- 6:15Speaker 1: to score on almost every possession when you're out there?
- 6:18Speaker 3: Uh?
- 6:18Speaker 2: You know, I don't ever want to put, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 2: crazy pressure on us, but I do believe that's our
- 6:24Speaker 2: mentality offensively, no matter who we're playing, is we got it.
- 6:26Speaker 2: We're gonna go score evers're off you know, because we
- 6:28Speaker 2: want to and because we can. So it doesn't really
- 6:30Speaker 2: matter who we're playing. I believe we approach it all
- 6:33Speaker 2: the same.
- 6:34Speaker 1: You've won your only home game so far this year
- 6:36Speaker 1: against Jacksonville. Is it going to help the offense overall
- 6:40Speaker 1: and the offensive line in particular to not have to
- 6:43Speaker 1: deal with crazy crowd noise by opposing fans? Obviously you'll
- 6:48Speaker 1: have it on your side this week, but in this game.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Yeah, no, man, it helps up front.
- 6:51Speaker 2: I mean just being able to be on a verbal cadence,
- 6:54Speaker 2: you know, it helps with getting your os, your defender,
- 6:57Speaker 2: all those different things.
- 6:58Speaker 1: At the beginning of the interview, you said I've been
- 7:01Speaker 1: through worse.
- 7:02Speaker 3: What was worse, man?
- 7:04Speaker 2: I mean I've been in some tough spots, man, where
- 7:07Speaker 2: you know, we get off to a good, good run
- 7:08Speaker 2: to start the season and you know we're I think
- 7:12Speaker 2: by week five, I mean we're pretty much one in four.
- 7:14Speaker 2: So I've been in those positions before. Man, I've been
- 7:17Speaker 2: alling for I believe before, you know. So, like I said,
- 7:21Speaker 2: it's it's all about perspective. It's all about just continuing
- 7:24Speaker 2: to strive, knowing, understanding the expectation and standard that we
- 7:27Speaker 2: set in our building and being able to strive for
- 7:29Speaker 2: that and continue to grow.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Always appreciate your time, best of luck this week.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I appreciate you.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Subpower performances in Minnesota and Denver turned the Bengals into
- 7:38Speaker 1: a significant home underdog this week, and Zach Taylor says
- 7:42Speaker 1: that's fine with him.
- 7:44Speaker 5: I love personally playing playing these types of games. These
- 7:47Speaker 5: are my favorite games to play. This is why we
- 7:48Speaker 5: do it again. Our backs against the wall a little
- 7:51Speaker 5: bit going in this game off of two losses.
- 7:53Speaker 3: That's perfect.
- 7:53Speaker 5: You know, I'd like to see Howard By responds. Who
- 7:56Speaker 5: lives in fear, who thrives in the university. It's it's
- 7:59Speaker 5: a great opportunity for a coach to really assess what
- 8:02Speaker 5: you guys are made of, myself included, and so again
- 8:05Speaker 5: it's a tremendous opportunity that we are not running from
- 8:09Speaker 5: where we are running directly into.
- 8:10Speaker 1: It's certainly good to be back at home, where the
- 8:12Speaker 1: Bengals have won seven of their last eight, including this
- 8:16Speaker 1: year's only home game so far, the Week two victory
- 8:19Speaker 1: over Jacksonville. Sunday's game will be televised on Fox, and
- 8:23Speaker 1: there will also be on national radio broadcast. One of
- 8:29Speaker 1: our favorites, we'll call the game on national radio this week.
- 8:32Speaker 1: I'm speaking of the NFL networks. Brian Baaldinger, Baldy, what's
- 8:36Speaker 1: job won for the Bengals this week as they try
- 8:39Speaker 1: to get back on track.
- 8:40Speaker 6: Yeah, I gotta start with protection. I mean, Jay Detroit
- 8:44Speaker 6: is a good offense, really good offense. They're back on track,
- 8:47Speaker 6: and so you're going to have to get on track
- 8:49Speaker 6: offensively too, which you couldn't do Monday night in Denver.
- 8:51Speaker 7: A lot of circumstances there about the protection of Jay.
- 8:55Speaker 6: So it can at least get to his third step,
- 8:57Speaker 6: get to his fifth step, be able to set and
- 8:59Speaker 6: be able to get the ball to you know, to
- 9:01Speaker 6: to those wideouts, to Jamar and to Tea and you
- 9:04Speaker 6: know Yosi whoever. But I mean, I think protection is
- 9:07Speaker 6: going to be paramount. I mean there is Aiden Hutchinson
- 9:10Speaker 6: over there. You got to have a game plan for him.
- 9:12Speaker 6: He can wreck your offense. He has done that two
- 9:15Speaker 6: weeks in a row now to other teams. And so
- 9:18Speaker 6: you know, you got to know where ninety seven is
- 9:19Speaker 6: out at old times.
- 9:20Speaker 1: You played in the NFL for more than a decade.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It's an emotional roller coaster. If you're a captain or
- 9:26Speaker 1: a Bengals team leader this week, what's your message after
- 9:29Speaker 1: the last couple of games.
- 9:30Speaker 7: Well, you got to put you got to put money
- 9:32Speaker 7: night behind you. It's a short week. You got to travel.
- 9:34Speaker 6: I mean all that stuff you know doesn't sit with
- 9:37Speaker 6: people that like, you know, a nice schedule, you know,
- 9:41Speaker 6: a weekly schedule that that's gone.
- 9:44Speaker 7: So you got to flush that. I mean, if you Trey,
- 9:46Speaker 7: you Jamar, you know you're zeus.
- 9:48Speaker 6: I mean you got to get focused because this is
- 9:50Speaker 6: a good football team come to town and they got things.
- 9:53Speaker 6: They got the ship right, and they've got great playmakers.
- 9:55Speaker 6: You've got to lock in you got to play the
- 9:57Speaker 6: home crowd. You're in the jungle. You know, you've got
- 10:01Speaker 6: to win your home games, and so you've got to
- 10:03Speaker 6: flush that thing and get it out of your system
- 10:06Speaker 6: and recharge here for this week, because honestly, Dan, it's
- 10:09Speaker 6: a week to weekly you know, I mean, nobody thought
- 10:11Speaker 6: Cleveland could beat Green Bay and you know nobody saw that,
- 10:16Speaker 6: you know, the Giants beating the charge. I mean, this
- 10:17Speaker 6: is week to week, and so why can't it be
- 10:20Speaker 6: week to week and put that disaster of.
- 10:23Speaker 7: Money night behind you?
- 10:24Speaker 6: And really, because you know, honestly, Detroit, you could beat Detroit.
- 10:28Speaker 6: And if you do, now you're three and two and
- 10:30Speaker 6: you're saying, hey, you know what, we just beat a
- 10:32Speaker 6: good team, and so then you start to get that
- 10:35Speaker 6: confident feeling back.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Let's talk about the offensive line in a little more detail.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Since the Super Bowl in twenty twenty one, they've devoted
- 10:42Speaker 1: a lot of resources to try to improve it. They've
- 10:45Speaker 1: signed free agents like Orlando Brown Junior and Ted Carris.
- 10:48Speaker 1: They used their first round pick last year on a
- 10:50Speaker 1: Marius Mims. They have not been able to turn it
- 10:53Speaker 1: into a strength. That was your position? What do you
- 10:56Speaker 1: think how should they approach it going forward.
- 10:59Speaker 6: Look, Joe's had injuries before, and I don't know if
- 11:02Speaker 6: you could put that on the offensive line, you know,
- 11:05Speaker 6: he's that that's a horrible injury what he suffered. And
- 11:08Speaker 6: when you got to have surgery, Uh, that's unfortunate. But
- 11:12Speaker 6: I mean, I I think you just keep you keep
- 11:15Speaker 6: trying to develop players, Dan, You keep trying to find
- 11:19Speaker 6: guys that are rejecting from other teams.
- 11:21Speaker 7: You gotta you gotta, you gotta draft in, you gotta develop.
- 11:24Speaker 6: You got to hit free agency, all right, Ted, you know,
- 11:27Speaker 6: zeus whatever, and then you've got to develop. You know,
- 11:30Speaker 6: your draft picks, and they drafted a lot of guys, Dan,
- 11:32Speaker 6: there aren't on that team anymore, you know, over the
- 11:35Speaker 6: last three or four years, and so draft to develop
- 11:38Speaker 6: and then you know, give those guys a chance to grow,
- 11:41Speaker 6: you know, and we haven't really seen much of that
- 11:43Speaker 6: so far.
- 11:44Speaker 1: When Jake filled in for Joe two years ago, he
- 11:47Speaker 1: played extremely well. He obviously led the Bengals to a
- 11:50Speaker 1: great comeback in Week two and they beat the Jags
- 11:52Speaker 1: at pay Corpse Stadium. Last couple of weeks have not
- 11:55Speaker 1: gone well. But what do you think of Jake Browning
- 11:57Speaker 1: as a backup QB.
- 11:59Speaker 6: Well, I mean he's got the advantage that he's been
- 12:01Speaker 6: there for I don't know, four years, whatever it is now, Dan,
- 12:04Speaker 6: you know, so he knows the system, he knows what
- 12:06Speaker 6: Zach wants, he knows what the plays are, he knows
- 12:09Speaker 6: where to go with the ball. You know, he's just
- 12:12Speaker 6: you know, the turnovers are never going to be a
- 12:16Speaker 6: good thing for any quarterback. But you can't play with fear.
- 12:19Speaker 6: You can't play out of fear. You still have to
- 12:21Speaker 6: be aggressive. You've got receivers that you got to trust
- 12:24Speaker 6: that can go get it, and they've got two of
- 12:26Speaker 6: the best.
- 12:27Speaker 7: They're being paid to be the best. So I think
- 12:29Speaker 7: there's other ways.
- 12:30Speaker 6: I mean, if you just watch Denvers offense the other day,
- 12:33Speaker 6: like they score two touchdowns as easy as you can.
- 12:36Speaker 7: Score, Dan, I mean a fly sweep and you pick
- 12:38Speaker 7: up a block on.
- 12:39Speaker 6: The outside, you hit him against a blitzero and you
- 12:41Speaker 6: got the right play on you know. Some of it
- 12:43Speaker 6: is just a play call too, and the timing of
- 12:46Speaker 6: the play call against certain looks.
- 12:48Speaker 1: You have called Jamar Chase the best wide receiver in
- 12:51Speaker 1: the NFL. What separates Jamar from the pack.
- 12:55Speaker 6: I think if you put Jamar at tailback. He'd be
- 12:57Speaker 6: a great tailback, you know, I really do. I mean,
- 13:00Speaker 6: be an elite tailback. Like he's so strong. He catches
- 13:03Speaker 6: everything with his hands. Fundamentally, he comes back to the football.
- 13:06Speaker 6: He doesn't give the defenders a chance.
- 13:09Speaker 7: He is great with contested catches.
- 13:12Speaker 6: He's going to see you know, uh, he just saw
- 13:14Speaker 6: Sertane a little bit last week. I don't know what
- 13:17Speaker 6: Detroit's plan is. They've struggled at the corner position. But
- 13:21Speaker 6: you know, against the great corners he can win. He
- 13:24Speaker 6: can win in the deep ball, he can win on
- 13:27Speaker 6: the old you know, West Coast style of offense DN
- 13:30Speaker 6: where he short passes long runs. We've seen him do everything. Uh,
- 13:34Speaker 6: and so you know, his game against you know, Jacksonville
- 13:37Speaker 6: was you know, you know, it's it's what, it's what.
- 13:42Speaker 7: Only a couple of guys in this league. We saw
- 13:43Speaker 7: Puka Duhl last week.
- 13:44Speaker 6: There's only a couple guys in Lincoln do what he
- 13:46Speaker 6: did against Jacksonville in winning that game.
- 13:49Speaker 1: The Bengals defense bald features nine top one hundred draft
- 13:53Speaker 1: picks that were taken in the last four years. These
- 13:55Speaker 1: young guys are getting a lot of playing time now
- 13:57Speaker 1: have any of these young defenders caught your eye, Well.
- 14:01Speaker 6: I mean Osim made a couple of plays the other day.
- 14:03Speaker 6: I mean we keep waiting for him. I mean he
- 14:06Speaker 6: was a high pick out of Texas. Keep waiting on
- 14:08Speaker 6: him to come around right now. You know, the number
- 14:11Speaker 6: one pick missed all a training camp and so like
- 14:14Speaker 6: he's learning this. It's it's tough for any rookie just
- 14:17Speaker 6: you know the stats as well as anybody Dan, but
- 14:20Speaker 6: most rookies struggle their first year. Look at what Nick
- 14:23Speaker 6: Benito is doing now versus what he did his first
- 14:25Speaker 6: year come out of Oklahoma. It's literally on the job
- 14:28Speaker 6: training every day, and you can't spend enough time around
- 14:32Speaker 6: Trey or other veterans that understand what that's all about
- 14:35Speaker 6: right now, So we got to give you know, the
- 14:38Speaker 6: rookie linebacker chance here, you know, to kind of you know,
- 14:42Speaker 6: see these formations and the motions and you know, get
- 14:45Speaker 6: his eyes in the right place. You know, he's got
- 14:47Speaker 6: a good veter next to him that can help them.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Let's talk about the Lions. They come to town leading
- 14:52Speaker 1: the NFL and scoring at thirty four points a game.
- 14:55Speaker 1: That's despite losing their offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who is
- 14:58Speaker 1: now the head coach of the Bears. What can a
- 15:00Speaker 1: defense do to try to slow down Detroit.
- 15:03Speaker 6: Well, the first thing you got to do, Dan, honestly
- 15:06Speaker 6: is you've got to stop the explosives, you know, and
- 15:09Speaker 6: the run in pass because Jamiir Gibbs can score from anywhere.
- 15:12Speaker 6: But you know, I say that, and then you see
- 15:14Speaker 6: David Montgomery go for seventy a couple of weeks ago.
- 15:17Speaker 6: You know, I've never seen David Montgomery on seventy yards
- 15:19Speaker 6: in a game. And I go back to his high
- 15:21Speaker 6: school in Ohio, you know, but I've never seen him
- 15:24Speaker 6: at Iowa State ever do that.
- 15:26Speaker 7: So you got to stop the explosive.
- 15:27Speaker 6: And then you know Jameson Williams can score from anywhere,
- 15:31Speaker 6: so those and they're going to try and hit those.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Johnny Morton will call those plays up. So you've got
- 15:36Speaker 6: to limit the explosives number one. And then you've got
- 15:39Speaker 6: to find ways to get GoF off the spot. If
- 15:41Speaker 6: you let Jared Goff, he is a he's a surgeon
- 15:45Speaker 6: back there. If you let him stay on that spot
- 15:48Speaker 6: and read defenses and find his outlets, he's going to
- 15:53Speaker 6: have a good day.
- 15:54Speaker 7: So you got to get quick pressure to Jared Goff.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Detroit is thirty two and ten playoff game since the
- 16:01Speaker 1: start of twenty twenty three. Dan Campbell's built a heck
- 16:03Speaker 1: of a team in Detroit. You're going to be in
- 16:05Speaker 1: the radio booth on Sunday. Give us a formula for
- 16:08Speaker 1: how the Bengals come away with a victory at home.
- 16:11Speaker 7: Well, I think they got to hit their explosives.
- 16:14Speaker 6: I mean, look, you just paid two wide receivers a
- 16:17Speaker 6: boatload of money to go win games. And honestly, Dan,
- 16:20Speaker 6: your stars win games, and those are your stars, So
- 16:23Speaker 6: you got to find ways to get you know, Jamar,
- 16:25Speaker 6: because you know, I think they're going to bench Terry
- 16:27Speaker 6: and Arnold this week. I mean, he was their first
- 16:29Speaker 6: round pick. He has not played well. He's had a
- 16:31Speaker 6: lot of penalties and a lot of penalties last year.
- 16:34Speaker 6: So their's secondary while they have had a lot of takeaways,
- 16:38Speaker 6: especially you know at the safety position, they're vulnerable out there,
- 16:42Speaker 6: and so take your shots, take your go balls, you know,
- 16:46Speaker 6: against with t and Jamar and hit them.
- 16:48Speaker 7: I mean that's that's the start. And then I think,
- 16:51Speaker 7: you know, anytime you got.
- 16:52Speaker 6: A guy like Aiden Hutchinson on the other side, like
- 16:55Speaker 6: you've got to make them play the run as much
- 16:57Speaker 6: as you can. Now they've they've added a lot of beef,
- 17:00Speaker 6: you know, Tyler Williams, They've had a lot of beef
- 17:03Speaker 6: in the middle. But you know, I'd like to see
- 17:05Speaker 6: the run game get going. Well, you have a little
- 17:07Speaker 6: bit of balance, a little bit of play action there
- 17:09Speaker 6: on offense right now, and play some keep away you
- 17:12Speaker 6: know from Jared Goff in that offense right now.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Paul, do you appreciate your time and your expertise as always,
- 17:18Speaker 1: enjoy your trip to Cincinnati this weekend.
- 17:21Speaker 6: I will look forward to seeing you and my trip
- 17:24Speaker 6: to the John. If you remember, Dan, last year, Week five,
- 17:28Speaker 6: Baltimore came to town and I mean you were up ten
- 17:32Speaker 6: in the fourth quarter. He lost the game, but it
- 17:34Speaker 6: was the Jungle was rocking that day, and there's a
- 17:37Speaker 6: lot of good things that happened that day. Joe played fantastic,
- 17:40Speaker 6: Jamar was fantastic. They lost to you know, Lamar to shootout,
- 17:44Speaker 6: but that was that was one of the more fun
- 17:46Speaker 6: games I announced all year last year.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Well, hope for a similar atmosphere with a different outcome
- 17:52Speaker 1: this Sunday.
- 17:53Speaker 7: That's it, Dan.
- 17:55Speaker 1: The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to you by pay Corps,
- 17:58Speaker 1: Proud to be the Bengals Official HR software provider, by
- 18:01Speaker 1: Alta Fiber future Proof Fiber Internet designed to elevate your home, business,
- 18:06Speaker 1: and community to a new level, and by Kettering Health
- 18:09Speaker 1: the best care for the best fans. Kettering Health is
- 18:12Speaker 1: the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. So here come
- 18:16Speaker 1: the Detroit Lions, a team that went fifteen and two
- 18:19Speaker 1: last year, earned the number one seed in the playoffs
- 18:22Speaker 1: in the NFC, but lost at home to Washington in
- 18:26Speaker 1: that first playoff game forty five thirty one due to
- 18:30Speaker 1: a defense that was decimated by injuries. The Lions opened
- 18:34Speaker 1: this season with a fourteen point loss in Green Bay,
- 18:37Speaker 1: but they've won three in a row since and averaged
- 18:41Speaker 1: forty one points in those wins. Matt Derry is the
- 18:45Speaker 1: host of the Lockdown Lions podcast, and he discussed the
- 18:49Speaker 1: team with Dave Lapham and me on the Bengals Game
- 18:51Speaker 1: Plan Show.
- 18:53Speaker 4: They're really on a roll, right and how they look
- 18:55Speaker 4: good opening week? You know, you take a lot, you
- 18:59Speaker 4: take nothing out of the tason and really training camp
- 19:02Speaker 4: because a lot of the regulars weren't out there and
- 19:04Speaker 4: they looked rusty and they looked unprepared for Week one
- 19:07Speaker 4: in Green Bay, and they got exposed and played really poorly,
- 19:10Speaker 4: really at all three phases since then, the last three games,
- 19:14Speaker 4: the Bears at home Baltimore for a big Monday Night,
- 19:16Speaker 4: went on the road, and then last weekend taking care
- 19:18Speaker 4: of the Browns at home. The Lions looked like the Lions.
- 19:21Speaker 4: They looked like a team that is destined to get
- 19:23Speaker 4: back to the NFC Championship. It's fundamentals with them, Dave.
- 19:28Speaker 4: You know this blocking and tackling. They've won up front
- 19:31Speaker 4: with their O line, their D lines the last three
- 19:33Speaker 4: weeks dominated the Ravens in that department, and then did
- 19:37Speaker 4: the same with the Browns this week, kept Jared Goff clean,
- 19:39Speaker 4: no sacks from Miles Garrett and at Brown's front, and
- 19:42Speaker 4: then they feel very good about themselves at three and one.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Right now, you mentioned the offensive line, let me ask
- 19:49Speaker 1: you about the right tackle. Back in twenty twenty one,
- 19:51Speaker 1: there was something of a civil war here in Cincinnati
- 19:54Speaker 1: leading to the draft. Should the Bengals take Jamar Chase
- 19:57Speaker 1: or Piney Sewell, Bengals are obviously happy with the guy
- 20:00Speaker 1: they took. Jamar has been tremendous but the Lions are
- 20:03Speaker 1: happy with the guy they took as well. Do you
- 20:06Speaker 1: think panay Sewell is the best offensive lineman in the NFL?
- 20:12Speaker 4: You know, Dan, I think he's the best right tackle
- 20:13Speaker 4: in the game. I mean that I can say. I
- 20:15Speaker 4: mean there's some very good old linemen out there, and
- 20:18Speaker 4: obviously a Tristan Wurfs is out there. And you know
- 20:22Speaker 4: there's a guy with the Chargers right now that I
- 20:23Speaker 4: would love. But if he's not he's not healthy. Right now,
- 20:26Speaker 4: there's plenty of good ones. You know, Creed Humphrey in
- 20:30Speaker 4: Kansas City is so good. But Piney Soul, to me
- 20:32Speaker 4: is the best right tackle in the game.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Uh.
- 20:34Speaker 4: PFF had him two weeks ago against the Ravens grated
- 20:38Speaker 4: out near in one hundred, which is almost unheard of.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Uh he's been dominating. Uh he can move. He's throwing
- 20:45Speaker 4: guys around and and and then getting back up and
- 20:48Speaker 4: blocking down the field. And he's just been so good.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Like I said, helping helping to neutralized Miles gear At
- 20:53Speaker 4: last week was a big win and keeping golf clean.
- 20:56Speaker 4: And look, it's a great debate. You can still debate
- 20:59Speaker 4: it to this day with jamar versus pine Sui get
- 21:02Speaker 4: two of the best guys in the entire league. But
- 21:04Speaker 4: Lions love with it what they have in their right tackle.
- 21:06Speaker 4: He signed long term and and he's helping the guys
- 21:09Speaker 4: in the interior of that offensive line. You know, he's
- 21:11Speaker 4: got a rookie next him at right guard and Tate
- 21:13Speaker 4: rat Legend can only make him better, and that makes
- 21:15Speaker 4: Graham Glasgow better, and that makes Taylor Decker better and
- 21:18Speaker 4: Christian Mahiney the left guard. Soule's you know, he's a
- 21:22Speaker 4: tone setter man, and love watching him against Trey Hendrickson
- 21:26Speaker 4: this week. That'll be a lot of fun.
- 21:28Speaker 8: That leads me to your head coach, Dan Campbell. That
- 21:32Speaker 8: dude is a tone setter in terms of I think
- 21:35Speaker 8: a leader of men. How important has Dan Campbell been.
- 21:39Speaker 8: I mean a losing record year one, but none ever since.
- 21:43Speaker 8: I mean, you know, five hundred or better, that's what
- 21:45Speaker 8: you get with Dan Campbell. How important has he been
- 21:49Speaker 8: to the success of Alliance?
- 21:51Speaker 4: He's changed the culture with the Lions. He and Brad
- 21:54Speaker 4: Holmes a general manager. But really, the Detroit Sports needed
- 21:58Speaker 4: Dan Campbell. They really did in a time where I
- 22:00Speaker 4: mean now that they said the Tigers in the playoffs
- 22:02Speaker 4: Pistons made the playoffs last year. Red Winnings have struggled
- 22:05Speaker 4: now for a decade. But the Lions, it was this
- 22:08Speaker 4: time for them to finally turn the corner and turn
- 22:10Speaker 4: the page. And this guy has come in and just
- 22:12Speaker 4: he's the face of this city. And this offseason he
- 22:16Speaker 4: heard Dave all those whispers about uh oh, Ben Johnson's gone,
- 22:20Speaker 4: Aaron Glenn has gone. You lose your two coordinators, you're
- 22:23Speaker 4: all pro center retires and Frank Ragnow what are they
- 22:26Speaker 4: gonna do? How are they gonna work around? This is
- 22:28Speaker 4: Green Bay gonna catch him, This is Minnesota gonna catch him. Hey,
- 22:31Speaker 4: the Bears are on fire in the offseason. They win
- 22:33Speaker 4: the off season every year. There the Bears of the
- 22:35Speaker 4: offseason champs every year. So what are they gonna do?
- 22:38Speaker 4: And what Dan Campbell did was just he told the guys,
- 22:42Speaker 4: let's just do what we do, and that is you're right,
- 22:44Speaker 4: hit people in the mouth and be physical and utilize
- 22:48Speaker 4: the weapons that they have. And all of a sudden,
- 22:50Speaker 4: now John Morton looks like a pretty darn good OC
- 22:52Speaker 4: four games in replacing Ben Johnson and Kelvin Shepard's defense
- 22:56Speaker 4: has two of the top ten edge rushers. According to PFF,
- 22:59Speaker 4: in the league right now in Hutchinson and Alcade, Mohammad
- 23:02Speaker 4: so Dan Kimpbell's has kept the ship steady. It's next
- 23:06Speaker 4: man up when guys get hurt. DJ Reid's gonna be
- 23:08Speaker 4: off this week their best corner. So you gotta figure
- 23:11Speaker 4: guys like Meek Robertson and Khalil Dorsey step up and
- 23:14Speaker 4: they get the confidence of their coach that they'll do okay.
- 23:18Speaker 4: And so far as three wins out of four is
- 23:19Speaker 4: not ben No.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Matt Dary is the host of the Lockdown Lyons podcast. Matt,
- 23:24Speaker 1: we were talking a little bit earlier in the show
- 23:26Speaker 1: about Jared Goff. Seems like he is rarely mentioned among
- 23:31Speaker 1: the best five or six quarterbacks in the NFL. I'm
- 23:34Speaker 1: not sure why that's the case. Lions led the NFL
- 23:37Speaker 1: in scoring last year when he was the Rams quarterback.
- 23:40Speaker 1: They led the NFL in scoring in one of his seasons.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Should he be mentioned at the very top of the pedestal?
- 23:48Speaker 1: I don't mean number one, but among the top four
- 23:50Speaker 1: or five in your opinion.
- 23:53Speaker 4: I mean he's right up there. I mean I understand
- 23:55Speaker 4: why guys like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson and what
- 23:58Speaker 4: do you have in Cincinnati with Joe Burr, So get
- 24:01Speaker 4: more play just because they move around. They're a little
- 24:05Speaker 4: bit younger than Jared is now in his thirties, and
- 24:09Speaker 4: there's a little bit more sex appeal with some of
- 24:10Speaker 4: these other guys in terms of what they can do
- 24:12Speaker 4: outside of the pocket. And I get it. Jared Goff
- 24:15Speaker 4: was basically, you know, sent packing by Sean McVeigh and
- 24:19Speaker 4: an offensive guru and told you're not good enough. And
- 24:22Speaker 4: then they go get Matthew Stafford in that trade with
- 24:24Speaker 4: the Lions and they win the Super Bowl right away.
- 24:25Speaker 4: So that's a tough narrative to have to kind of bust.
- 24:29Speaker 4: And yet Gough has done it. I mean, he's won
- 24:31Speaker 4: more playoff games here than any Lion's quarterback probably since
- 24:35Speaker 4: Bobby Lane. And he's so steady. Like you said, the
- 24:38Speaker 4: guys love him. It helps him. They got a good
- 24:40Speaker 4: run game and a good offensive line, but he's got
- 24:42Speaker 4: to be throwing at a precision type rate and he does,
- 24:46Speaker 4: and his receivers love him. And yes, I think when
- 24:50Speaker 4: you talk in top five, top seven, eight, Yeah, there's
- 24:53Speaker 4: any lists you see that's have a top ten in it.
- 24:56Speaker 4: And Goff's not in there. That's not there. I mean
- 24:58Speaker 4: he's been he's helped right the ship here and he's
- 25:01Speaker 4: been so solid and rarely makes a mistake. Now you
- 25:04Speaker 4: get some pressure on him, especially up the middle, sure
- 25:07Speaker 4: he'll he'll he'll throw it to the other team. But
- 25:08Speaker 4: that's with every quarterback. But so far, like I said,
- 25:12Speaker 4: edn't Ben sacked the last three weeks. That's been real key.
- 25:15Speaker 8: So Matt Dan Campbell, how has he evolved?
- 25:22Speaker 4: I mean, the guys have the utmost confidence in him,
- 25:24Speaker 4: and like I said, he's a lot more creative, especially
- 25:26Speaker 4: on the offensive side, in helping game plan with John Morton.
- 25:30Speaker 4: He did it with Ben Johnson the last couple of years.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Uh.
- 25:33Speaker 4: And he's making good decisions because he's putting the right
- 25:35Speaker 4: he's putting the guys. It's all us that right right person,
- 25:38Speaker 4: right seat mentality. He knows you know when to go
- 25:41Speaker 4: for it on fourth downs. And everybody just thinks that
- 25:43Speaker 4: the lines automatically always go for on fourth downs. It's
- 25:47Speaker 4: not the case. But it's it's smart, it's calculated. He
- 25:49Speaker 4: puts the players in the right positions. This offseason, he
- 25:53Speaker 4: made a move with Hank Fraley the offensive line coach
- 25:56Speaker 4: was interviewing for other jobs to become offensive coordinator other
- 25:59Speaker 4: places and and Campbell told him go talk to other teams,
- 26:02Speaker 4: do it, see if you can better your situation, but
- 26:04Speaker 4: allowed Hain't Frailey to stay, made him an assistant head
- 26:07Speaker 4: coach and has a lot of faith that maybe he
- 26:11Speaker 4: can lean on a guy like that this is the
- 26:12Speaker 4: old line coach, but also on some game planning during
- 26:15Speaker 4: the week. So the assistants love him, the players love him,
- 26:19Speaker 4: and as far as evolving goes, I think he just
- 26:22Speaker 4: puts the guys in the right positions and lets them
- 26:24Speaker 4: do their thing. He lets Tared Goff change playing that
- 26:26Speaker 4: plays the line of scrimmage he's got. He handed the
- 26:29Speaker 4: green dot on the defensive side this week, not this
- 26:32Speaker 4: week this season to Jack Campbell, who's just a second
- 26:34Speaker 4: year linebacker. But he put him in that spot and
- 26:36Speaker 4: said told Alexanderloni he's more of a veteran. Hey, I'm
- 26:39Speaker 4: giving Jack this opportunity, and everybody bought in. It's not
- 26:42Speaker 4: like that in every locker room. Dave, you know that.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Matt dari is the host of the Locked On Lions podcast.
- 26:49Speaker 1: My final question Matt has to do with Week one,
- 26:52Speaker 1: the only time the Lions have lost so far this year.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Green Bay held him to thirteen points, which seems almost
- 26:57Speaker 1: impossible against this offense. What did the Packers do defensively
- 27:03Speaker 1: that helped them slow down this great attack?
- 27:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll say this. I just thought that in Week
- 27:09Speaker 4: one the Lions interior of their offensive line looked like
- 27:13Speaker 4: guys that hadn't played together, and quite honestly, they hadn't.
- 27:16Speaker 4: You're talking about a brand new left guard in Christian Mahogany,
- 27:18Speaker 4: you only started two games last year. Graham Glasgow takes
- 27:21Speaker 4: over at center, hadn't played center in the league in
- 27:23Speaker 4: a couple of years when he was in Denver, and
- 27:25Speaker 4: did so in Detroit, but that was of a whole
- 27:27Speaker 4: different team outside of Taylor Decker, and then the right
- 27:29Speaker 4: guards are rookie and Tate Ratlage. I think the Packers
- 27:32Speaker 4: loaded the box a little bit and showed a lot
- 27:34Speaker 4: of things on the interior and the Lions communication in
- 27:37Speaker 4: terms of picking up blitzers or sliding protections over to
- 27:40Speaker 4: a left or right side just weren't there, and so
- 27:44Speaker 4: the Lions never got in sync, and a lot of
- 27:46Speaker 4: it was what the looks of that Jeff Hathley defense
- 27:49Speaker 4: were I don't know if Cincinnati can emulate that. Baltimore tried,
- 27:54Speaker 4: it didn't work. They couldn't get to golf. The Browns
- 27:56Speaker 4: tried this week with Jim Schwartz, who's a heck of
- 27:58Speaker 4: a defensive coordinator. You guys saw him week one, and
- 28:01Speaker 4: it just didn't work. So I just think the Lions
- 28:03Speaker 4: has played poorly, that special teams are bad. That day,
- 28:06Speaker 4: everything was bad. And since they've just they've turned it
- 28:09Speaker 4: around and you know, they're just playing clean football. And
- 28:13Speaker 4: I know you guys, uh, you know had to sit
- 28:16Speaker 4: through what you sat through Monday night with all the penalties.
- 28:18Speaker 4: That's the other Lions have have been clean in terms
- 28:20Speaker 4: of the penalties, and it helps you.
- 28:23Speaker 8: Win there the fans and the fans are a big
- 28:27Speaker 8: part of it. The fans support is as good in
- 28:29Speaker 8: Detroit as it is anywhere any city in the National
- 28:32Speaker 8: Football League, and the Detroit Lion fans take great pride
- 28:35Speaker 8: in that. Does the organization in the community. Do they
- 28:38Speaker 8: feel like this is a Super Bowl contender?
- 28:41Speaker 4: Not after Week one? They but but I think the
- 28:45Speaker 4: last three weeks people are back. Not that they jumped
- 28:48Speaker 4: off the bandwagon. It was one game. But I think
- 28:50Speaker 4: people look and see this team now and see the
- 28:52Speaker 4: depth that's there, see what's there in the NFC, and
- 28:54Speaker 4: go absolutely lap they can win this thing and get
- 28:57Speaker 4: to the and get to the super Bowl. There. They
- 28:59Speaker 4: are good enough. They got to stay healthy, certainly, and
- 29:01Speaker 4: you gotta have Aiden Hutchinson out there healthy. That's a
- 29:04Speaker 4: guy this weekend that should rereak some havoc. And you
- 29:07Speaker 4: mentioned the fans, Dan and Dave. Get ready, there's going
- 29:10Speaker 4: to be a ton of Honolulu blue you in your stadium.
- 29:13Speaker 4: It's not a knock on Bengals. It's not a knock
- 29:15Speaker 4: on Bengals fans or people not showing up. The Lion
- 29:17Speaker 4: fans of the last couple of years have traveled like
- 29:19Speaker 4: no other. And they were in Indie last year and
- 29:22Speaker 4: invaded Lucas Oil. And that's a dry from Detroit to
- 29:25Speaker 4: Indian Detroit to Cinci. No, No, it's not too hard.
- 29:29Speaker 4: You're going to see a lot of Lion fans this weekend.
- 29:32Speaker 1: All right, Thanks to mad Darien, here's a quick invitation
- 29:34Speaker 1: to join lapp in me for the Bengals pep rally
- 29:36Speaker 1: show this week. We'll be at the on the Rhine
