- 0:00Speaker 1: Family owned and operated since 1972. Sevchak Service Center, 2200 Longmire,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just down from the post office in College Station. Thanks
- 0:09Speaker 1: for joining us here on the Thursday edition of the show.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us. We're going to hear
- 0:18Speaker 1: from Coach Elko. We've got a high school report. We've
- 0:21Speaker 1: got the Clark Eisenhower outdoor edition. In the second hour,
- 0:25Speaker 1: we're going to be joined by by wildlife biologist Billy Lambert,
- 0:30Speaker 1: who comes on about this time every year on the state.
- 0:34Speaker 1: We will visit with him in the second hour of
- 0:37Speaker 1: the program. Mike Elko did meet with the media today
- 0:43Speaker 1: and announced that a couple of players are lost for
- 0:47Speaker 1: the season because of injury, running back Tiger Ryden. Big
- 0:52Speaker 1: back and defensive lineman Chase Sims says Elko will miss
- 0:56Speaker 1: the season due to injuries. Elko also announced wide receiver
- 1:02Speaker 1: Jerome Miles and offensive lineman Nelson McGuire were no longer
- 1:07Speaker 1: with the program, according to him, because of personal reasons.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Ryden saw limited action in five games a year ago,
- 1:18Speaker 1: but he was just mentioned. by Holman Wiggins last year,
- 1:22Speaker 1: somebody who had made strides and they had planned on using.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I think that leaves them with four scholarship running backs.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I think that's right. So the team practiced today. Next
- 1:39Speaker 1: week is game week. We will have Coach Elko's weekly
- 1:45Speaker 1: press conference next Monday afternoon at 1.30. So that's how
- 1:55Speaker 1: that will go and will generally be on Mondays throughout
- 1:59Speaker 1: the football season. And speaking of that, we do have
- 2:05Speaker 1: college football this weekend. Starting up, not everybody, but a few.
- 2:13Speaker 1: North Carolina and TCU from Ireland. San Jose State and USC.
- 2:21Speaker 1: North Carolina State and Virginia, which should be competitive. Hawaii
- 2:29Speaker 1: and Stanford. New Mexico State, Florida State, and UNLV with Memphis.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So those are the games, the majority of the games.
- 2:41Speaker 1: There are a few others. There are some FCS games
- 2:45Speaker 1: starting this weekend. And by the way, this is interesting,
- 2:51Speaker 1: and I'm not going to spend time on all of
- 2:54Speaker 1: the lawyers' and threats and saber-rattling going on in the
- 2:59Speaker 1: wake of the LSU pros' back-to-college situation. We will talk
- 3:06Speaker 1: to Kirk Bowles about that tomorrow on the program. Kirk
- 3:11Speaker 1: will join us for his first of his weekly visits
- 3:15Speaker 1: each Friday on College Football. Tony Catalina will be with
- 3:20Speaker 1: me and talk Aggie football on Fridays starting tomorrow. This
- 3:28Speaker 1: is interesting. Tennessee's NIL collective people have come up with
- 3:33Speaker 1: an idea with a retail store, a brick and mortar
- 3:40Speaker 1: merchandise store dedicated to NILs. The volunteer club thinks it's
- 3:49Speaker 1: the first of its kind. Spry Sports Group co-founder Hunter
- 3:57Speaker 1: Badur says, if you're not willing to listen, learn, read, adapt,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and change in the NIL world, in three to six
- 4:05Speaker 1: months you can be a dinosaur. We're constantly looking at
- 4:10Speaker 1: new revenue streams, and one of them was starting a
- 4:14Speaker 1: retail store. We had some great advice from some of
- 4:18Speaker 1: our donors that in the middle of uncertainty in a market,
- 4:22Speaker 1: you've got a lot of opportunity. Very interesting. So I
- 4:29Speaker 1: don't know how the logistics and the finances of that
- 4:31Speaker 1: will be worked out. But if it does work, if
- 4:39Speaker 1: it does work, we'll see it at every big school. Baseball.
- 4:47Speaker 1: The Rangers are off. Most of us will tell you
- 4:51Speaker 1: they've been off the last two nights. Way off. Way terrible.
- 4:59Speaker 2: They've made the.
- 4:59Speaker 1: White Sox look like the 27 Yankees the last two games.
- 5:04Speaker 1: It has been ugly. There were lots of walks last night.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It was bad. The Astros, thankfully, lost last night to
- 5:19Speaker 1: the Yankees. They will play tonight. We have that game
- 5:30Speaker 1: for you when we're finished here. Hayden Wisniewski is pitching
- 5:36Speaker 1: against Garrett Cole tonight at Yankee Stadium. So we'll... We'll
- 5:46Speaker 1: see what happens. The Astros are sitting at 66 and 67.
- 5:51Speaker 1: So I think that's still a half game ahead of
- 5:57Speaker 1: the Rangers in the woeful AL West. Did we mention
- 6:02Speaker 1: how bad the AL West is? I think we've mentioned that.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I just think they should cancel the AL West for
- 6:11Speaker 1: this year. And I'm, I'm really beginning to believe for
- 6:15Speaker 1: the first time ever a team with a record under
- 6:17Speaker 1: 500 is going to win this division. These teams just
- 6:22Speaker 1: are not very good. They're golfing at Eastlake in Atlanta.
- 6:29Speaker 1: It is the final big tournament of the year in
- 6:33Speaker 1: the PGA tournament. It is the FedEx Cup finals. The
- 6:37Speaker 1: winner will get $ 10 million. Min Woo Lee shot a
- 6:42Speaker 1: eight under par 62. Damp conditions after overnight rain and
- 6:48Speaker 1: no wind has made the course, let's say, gettable. Almost
- 6:54Speaker 1: everybody's under par. Victor Haviland shot 64. He is minus six.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Ryan Gerard, Akshay Bhatia are in at minus five. Ryan Fox,
- 7:06Speaker 1: Adam Scott, Gary Woodland in at minus four. Gary Woodland
- 7:11Speaker 1: continues to be an incredible story on the tour. And
- 7:16Speaker 1: Scotty Scheffler is on. Oh, by the way, Chris Goddard
- 7:20Speaker 1: is on the course at minus five. Colin Marikawa is
- 7:24Speaker 1: on the course. at minus 5. Scotty Scheffler is minus 3.
- 7:30Speaker 1: And Rory, I don't know if he's finished at minus 2.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I think he was playing 18. And he is in
- 7:38Speaker 1: at 68. So Rory is in at minus 2. Like
- 7:44Speaker 1: I said, the course has been easier than normal because
- 7:50Speaker 1: of the weather conditions. The players are shooting darts at
- 7:56Speaker 1: the pins. And again, no wind to speak of. Wow,
- 8:03Speaker 1: they had rain in Atlanta. I wish I'd send some
- 8:05Speaker 1: of that here. That's a whole other story, I guess.
- 8:09Speaker 1: All right. We've got a high school report coming up.
- 8:14Speaker 1: We're going to hear from defensive lineman Anto Saka. One
- 8:21Speaker 1: of the names I think you're going to be hearing
- 8:24Speaker 1: throughout the season, looking for big things from him. And
- 8:32Speaker 1: we've got our Clark Eisenhower outdoor edition. We've got some
- 8:36Speaker 1: wild animal stories to tell you about this afternoon. We'll
- 8:42Speaker 1: take a break. We're going to hear from Mike Elko
- 8:44Speaker 1: when we come back after this for ANCO Insurance.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Anco Insurance is now a part of Hub International, bringing
- 8:52Speaker 3: you more choices, better value, and even greater expertise. While
- 8:56Speaker 3: our name has changed, we're still the same local team
- 8:58Speaker 3: you know and trust. Now with even more to offer,
- 9:01Speaker 3: from business insurance to personal protection and employee benefits, we're
- 9:04Speaker 3: still committed to protecting what matters most with the personalized
- 9:07Speaker 3: service you expect. Now with the strength of Hub International
- 9:10Speaker 3: behind us, more resources, more solutions, still your team. Anco Insurance,
- 9:15Speaker 3: a Hub International company, so you're ready for tomorrow.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Listen to the Houston Astros on the zone.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Thanks to Kelly Bird Dozer.
- 9:26Speaker 5: I went down to the river to watch the fish
- 9:29Speaker 5: swim by.
- 9:31Speaker 1: But when I got to.
- 9:35Speaker 6: The river, so once a man wanted to die, I
- 9:39Speaker 6: hold on. So then I jumped in the river, but
- 9:44Speaker 6: the doggone river was dry. She's alone, gone now Ludwig
- 9:52Speaker 6: Oberg from Texas Tech University is.
- 10:01Speaker 2: In at minus five.
- 10:03Speaker 4: He's shot at 65 today on the opening round of
- 10:07Speaker 4: the PGA.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Tour finale. I mean, there'll be other tournaments right through December,
- 10:26Speaker 1: but this is kind of it for the year in
- 10:30Speaker 1: terms of the big tournaments. Where was I? Yes, Mike Elko.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Mike Elko visited with the media today. You heard that
- 10:43Speaker 1: here on The Zone. I will tell you again, Most
- 10:49Speaker 1: Mondays of game week, including this coming Monday, I say
- 10:56Speaker 1: that he could change the time, but right now scheduled
- 11:00Speaker 1: for 1.30, and we will carry those weekly as part
- 11:07Speaker 1: of our coverage, which, by the way, this year will
- 11:12Speaker 1: start four hours before kickoff. So keep that in mind. Well,
- 11:21Speaker 1: you just want to leave it on and not turn
- 11:25Speaker 1: it off. I think that's what most of you do anyway,
- 11:27Speaker 1: which is that's good for me. OK, let's hear a
- 11:33Speaker 1: little bit of what Mike Elko had to say in
- 11:36Speaker 1: answering questions today.
- 11:39Speaker 8: We finalized fall camp. Just a couple roster updates I
- 11:43Speaker 8: want to get you guys. Unfortunately, Chase Sims and Tiger
- 11:46Speaker 8: Ryden will be out for the season this year due
- 11:48Speaker 8: to injuries. Both of those guys will be unavailable for
- 11:52Speaker 8: the rest of the year. And then no longer on
- 11:54Speaker 8: the roster will be Nelson McGuire and Jerome Miles for
- 11:58Speaker 8: personal reasons. And so that's where we are. As we
- 12:02Speaker 8: head into game week, I think... Really excited about where
- 12:04Speaker 8: we are. I think we've had a really, really strong
- 12:06Speaker 8: 18 practices now. As we just walked off of practice
- 12:09Speaker 8: number 18, I think the thing is coming together like
- 12:12Speaker 8: we hoped it would. And now it's an opportunity to
- 12:15Speaker 8: kind of turn our attention to somebody else, which I
- 12:18Speaker 8: think it's that part of camp where I think everybody's
- 12:20Speaker 8: itching to just get ready to go play somebody else.
- 12:23Speaker 8: So we had our last camp practice yesterday. We'll kind
- 12:27Speaker 8: of transition into game prep starting tomorrow. It's an exciting time.
- 12:32Speaker 8: It's an exciting time to get out there and see
- 12:33Speaker 8: what we are, see what we have, and see what
- 12:35Speaker 8: we're capable of doing this year. From there, we'll open
- 12:38Speaker 8: it up to questions.
- 12:40Speaker 9: Coach, we'll go to the left, second row. Alex.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Hey, Mike.
- 12:43Speaker 10: I feel like the last time we talked with you,
- 12:44Speaker 10: you said that the week after the first scrimmage was
- 12:47Speaker 10: kind of the most challenging, in your opinion. Just what
- 12:49Speaker 10: do you think were maybe the biggest strides that y'all
- 12:52Speaker 10: made through the back half of camp and what's pleased
- 12:54Speaker 10: you the most about your team going into the actual season?
- 12:56Speaker 8: Yeah, a lot of it is mental toughness, honestly. Like,
- 12:59Speaker 8: you guys have been here. The heat certainly has been
- 13:02Speaker 8: on high the last week. And, you know, that stretch
- 13:05Speaker 8: of having to get up every day with nothing really
- 13:08Speaker 8: exciting going on. And I'm just really proud of how
- 13:11Speaker 8: we pushed through it. And I think, to me, that
- 13:13Speaker 8: shows– a team mentally coming together to kind of start
- 13:17Speaker 8: battling together to overcome adversity. There are certainly moments and
- 13:21Speaker 8: times where the football isn't going to be pretty, but
- 13:25Speaker 8: I think we just continue to push through and continue
- 13:28Speaker 8: to do things.
- 13:30Speaker 9: Coach, we'll go to the left, fourth row.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Howdy, Coach.
- 13:37Speaker 8: Howdy.
- 13:37Speaker 11: We're about to speak to Isaiah Horton in just a
- 13:39Speaker 11: few moments, but he's obviously brought a lot of experience
- 13:41Speaker 11: to the.
- 13:41Speaker 8: Wide receiver room.
- 13:42Speaker 11: What have you seen from him on the field during
- 13:43Speaker 11: fall camp and beyond what he's already showed you on
- 13:45Speaker 11: the field?
- 13:46Speaker 8: Yeah, I think he's been what we were hoping we
- 13:49Speaker 8: were getting in that he's a big, tall, physical receiver.
- 13:52Speaker 8: I think he adds a different dimension to the room,
- 13:54Speaker 8: maybe a dimension that we were missing last year in
- 13:57Speaker 8: terms of just pure size and height, the ability to
- 14:00Speaker 8: go and make contested catches and so forth. and excited
- 14:03Speaker 8: to see what he's able to do and what he's
- 14:05Speaker 8: able to put together as we move forward into the fall.
- 14:08Speaker 9: Coach, we'll go over to the right third row. David.
- 14:11Speaker 10: Coach Elko, Reuben Owens has been here for a while,
- 14:13Speaker 10: and you've seen his growth. How different is he this
- 14:16Speaker 10: year as the veteran in that room and also the
- 14:20Speaker 10: strides he's made on the field?
- 14:21Speaker 8: Yeah, it's good to start that way, right? Been here
- 14:23Speaker 8: for a while because a lot of times, I always
- 14:25Speaker 8: come back to this, we talk like these kids don't
- 14:27Speaker 8: actually stay anywhere, and they do. And he's been here
- 14:30Speaker 8: for a while, maybe without it going exactly the way
- 14:33Speaker 8: he had mapped it out, going by injury and some
- 14:35Speaker 8: of those things.
- 14:36Speaker 2: And so.
- 14:37Speaker 8: I think what you have now is finally that healthy,
- 14:39Speaker 8: mature version of him that is physically ready to take
- 14:43Speaker 8: on the rigors of an SEC season, has had a really,
- 14:45Speaker 8: really strong offseason, has logged a lot of reps, so
- 14:49Speaker 8: is really, really comfortable in the run schemes and how
- 14:51Speaker 8: we're trying to attack the line of scrimmage and the
- 14:54Speaker 8: angles and the lines that we're trying to hit. And
- 14:55Speaker 8: so we're excited for him to be able to go
- 14:58Speaker 8: out and maybe finally put his absolute best, healthiest foot
- 15:02Speaker 8: forward heading into a new season.
- 15:05Speaker 9: Coach, we'll go to the left front row. Tony.
- 15:09Speaker 11: Coach, coming into the offseason, there was a lot of
- 15:11Speaker 11: conversation about Marco Jones and the steps he's taken.
- 15:14Speaker 8: What have you seen from him this fall? Obviously, what
- 15:17Speaker 8: have you seen how his progression's been? Yeah, I think
- 15:19Speaker 8: those steps. I think the difference between being a really
- 15:23Speaker 8: talented high school football player and a really good SEC
- 15:26Speaker 8: college football player obviously is massive. And I think last year,
- 15:30Speaker 8: what he was was a kid who had an unbelievable potential,
- 15:33Speaker 8: tremendous traits, but was learning and growing every day about
- 15:37Speaker 8: how to actually play fundamental football at the level you
- 15:40Speaker 8: need to to be as successful as you can be.
- 15:43Speaker 12: And I think.
- 15:44Speaker 8: To his credit, because this is always the big challenge,
- 15:46Speaker 8: when you are that big, really athletic kid for so long,
- 15:50Speaker 8: are you willing to really go to work on all
- 15:53Speaker 8: of those fundamentals, those little details that are going to
- 15:55Speaker 8: allow you to take your game where you want it
- 15:58Speaker 8: to go? I think he's done that. I think you've
- 16:00Speaker 8: got a kid now who not only is big and
- 16:03Speaker 8: athletic and fits the profile that you would want, but
- 16:06Speaker 8: has really detailed his craft, become a lot better fundamentally. Again,
- 16:10Speaker 8: I think he's really, really excited to go out there
- 16:12Speaker 8: and show that this year.
- 16:13Speaker 9: We'll stay on the left, second row.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Alex.
- 16:17Speaker 10: Sticking with the DNs, I wanted to ask you about
- 16:19Speaker 10: Anto Saka and just what's really impressed you the most
- 16:22Speaker 10: about him and just the biggest ways you've seen him
- 16:24Speaker 10: grow leading.
- 16:25Speaker 8: Into this season. Yeah, maturity probably. I think you're bringing
- 16:28Speaker 8: in a kid who's played a lot of football, has
- 16:30Speaker 8: been around the block a little bit, knows what college
- 16:32Speaker 8: football is all about, and obviously has kind of integrated
- 16:36Speaker 8: into that room. And, again, another physical kid. I think
- 16:40Speaker 8: we've got a really, really strong, deep group of defensive ends,
- 16:44Speaker 8: and he's obviously a big piece of it.
- 16:47Speaker 9: Coach will go all the way in the back, Landon.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Howdy, Coach.
- 16:51Speaker 8: Howdy.
- 16:51Speaker 13: Spoke with Coach Hemphill on Tuesday. We talked to him
- 16:53Speaker 13: a little bit about the linebacker crew, and he talked
- 16:55Speaker 13: about how Damian's injury kind of helped that group progress
- 16:58Speaker 13: a little bit quicker than they might have before. What
- 17:00Speaker 13: have you seen from that group, and do you agree
- 17:02Speaker 13: with that sentiment?
- 17:03Speaker 8: Yeah, I think so. And obviously you don't ever want
- 17:06Speaker 8: anybody to get injured for sure, and I wish Damian didn't,
- 17:09Speaker 8: and I wish he was out there playing. But those
- 17:12Speaker 8: reps had to go somewhere, and the urgency to be
- 17:15Speaker 8: the guy had to go somewhere. And I think all
- 17:18Speaker 8: of those kids, because of that, have taken a big
- 17:21Speaker 8: step forward. And so when you look at what Noah
- 17:23Speaker 8: McHale has been able to do, what Ray Coney has
- 17:25Speaker 8: been able to do, what Jordan Lockhart has been able
- 17:28Speaker 8: to do, and then just young guys, Tamarian Watkins and
- 17:31Speaker 8: Tank King, as they've kind of emerged because they've been
- 17:34Speaker 8: given more opportunities.
- 17:35Speaker 2: And so, yeah, I think what.
- 17:37Speaker 8: We have now is a stronger, deeper group than maybe
- 17:40Speaker 8: we had in the spring when we had a lot
- 17:42Speaker 8: more guys still trying to figure things out.
- 17:45Speaker 9: Coach, we'll go to the front right.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Carter.
- 17:48Speaker 14: Mike, what have you made of this recent craze with
- 17:51Speaker 14: the NFL players thinking about coming back to college, and
- 17:54Speaker 14: what's prevented you guys from maybe wanting to explore that,
- 17:57Speaker 14: and what have you thought of the SEC ruling around that?
- 18:02Speaker 8: It reminded me of a really smart guy who stood
- 18:04Speaker 8: on a podium and cried for centralized leadership in college
- 18:08Speaker 8: sports because it felt like a lot of people were
- 18:10Speaker 8: just acting in their best interests. I can't remember who
- 18:13Speaker 8: it was that said that recently, but I feel like
- 18:15Speaker 8: somebody came out and said something like that. Yeah, it's
- 18:21Speaker 8: a statement about where we are from a governance standpoint
- 18:25Speaker 8: that we are having conversations about what the rules are
- 18:29Speaker 8: going to be regarding roster management on August 27th, and
- 18:34Speaker 8: we kick off. There's games tonight, there's games Saturday, and
- 18:38Speaker 8: we're not even really sure what the rules are around
- 18:41Speaker 8: who can play on our teams this fall. I think that,
- 18:45Speaker 8: if you want a statement about where we are as
- 18:47Speaker 8: a overall governance structure, that's where we are. We entertain everything,
- 18:54Speaker 8: so I don't think it's fair to say, why haven't
- 18:56Speaker 8: we entertained? I think you entertain everything until you figure
- 19:00Speaker 8: out what the landscape is going to look like. I
- 19:03Speaker 8: think from our perspective... we are very comfortable and confident
- 19:07Speaker 8: with the culture that we've built, and I don't know
- 19:09Speaker 8: that it makes a ton of sense for us in
- 19:12Speaker 8: August to go out and recruit a whole bunch of
- 19:14Speaker 8: kids who haven't been through it all with us, haven't
- 19:17Speaker 8: been through the hard days in the summer with Coach Moffitt,
- 19:21Speaker 8: haven't been through spring ball, haven't been through team bonding.
- 19:24Speaker 8: It doesn't make a ton of sense for us to
- 19:26Speaker 8: go infuse 10, 12, 8 new players into our roster,
- 19:32Speaker 8: and so That's probably why we never really were at
- 19:36Speaker 8: the forefront of that. But I do think it's unwise
- 19:40Speaker 8: in this day and age to not be aware of
- 19:43Speaker 8: what is out there. And so we certainly were aware,
- 19:46Speaker 8: but I think ultimately made the decision that we're very
- 19:49Speaker 8: confident in comfortable with what we have in this building
- 19:51Speaker 8: and we're confident in rolling with them this fall.
- 19:58Speaker 9: Fourth row. Yep, fourth.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Row.
- 20:01Speaker 11: Kind of on that point, with the SEC continuing to
- 20:03Speaker 11: get deeper and more competitive, what do you think separates
- 20:05Speaker 11: the teams that are able to consistently compete at the
- 20:07Speaker 11: top of the league?
- 20:09Speaker 8: Yeah, it's those winning plays. We talked a lot about that.
- 20:13Speaker 8: The difference between, and we say this to the team
- 20:16Speaker 8: a lot, if you just go back last year to
- 20:18Speaker 8: Notre Dame, the difference between the feelings in this building,
- 20:22Speaker 8: around this program, and about this program, because we converted
- 20:26Speaker 8: a fourth and 11, as opposed to had we not
- 20:29Speaker 8: converted a fourth and 11. And that's football. And every year,
- 20:34Speaker 8: that's football. And we've got to continue to be the
- 20:37Speaker 8: team that steps up and makes those winning plays in
- 20:40Speaker 8: those moments. I think that's what we did last year.
- 20:44Speaker 8: That's what we did in that game. That's what we
- 20:46Speaker 8: did on defense against Auburn. That's what we did against
- 20:48Speaker 8: South Carolina. Unfortunately, that's what we didn't do in the
- 20:52Speaker 8: playoff game. That's ultimately where football is going to be.
- 20:56Speaker 8: I think the more... parity sets in, which it clearly is,
- 21:00Speaker 8: and the more the top, I think, continues to come
- 21:03Speaker 8: down a little bit and the bottom continues to rise
- 21:06Speaker 8: a little bit and you're starting to see a lot
- 21:08Speaker 8: more similar-like teams with a ninth conference game, it's going
- 21:14Speaker 8: to be that. It's going to come down to those
- 21:15Speaker 8: winning plays. And so you try to work on them.
- 21:17Speaker 8: You try to put your kids in those positions as
- 21:19Speaker 8: often as you can. You try to do it at
- 21:22Speaker 8: times when they're really, really uncomfortable because that's when they're
- 21:24Speaker 8: going to happen in the game, and you just try
- 21:27Speaker 8: to build that mental resilience they're going to need to
- 21:29Speaker 8: be successful.
- 21:30Speaker 9: Coach, we'll go back over to Alex on the left.
- 21:33Speaker 10: Lyle told us the other day he's going to be
- 21:34Speaker 10: in the press box for games this year. Was he
- 21:36Speaker 10: in the box last year, or was he on the sideline?
- 21:42Speaker 8: He was in the box. Yeah, he was in the box. Yeah,
- 21:44Speaker 8: Jay was on the sideline. He was in the box.
- 21:46Speaker 10: What do you like about that setup? with him being
- 21:49Speaker 10: in the box as DC?
- 21:51Speaker 8: I think he likes it. I think, to me, that's
- 21:53Speaker 8: always a decision on them, not me. It's not me
- 21:56Speaker 8: mandating him go up there. I think it's where do
- 21:59Speaker 8: you think you can be the most useful, the most helpful.
- 22:01Speaker 8: He'll be the walkie-talkie guy this year, and so he'll
- 22:05Speaker 8: be talking to the green dot, and so where do
- 22:06Speaker 8: you feel like you can best comfortably do that? So
- 22:10Speaker 8: I think it's way less about me saying, oh, I
- 22:13Speaker 8: feel a certain way about him now I think it's
- 22:15Speaker 8: more him, probably secondary background, no different than when I
- 22:18Speaker 8: was a coordinator. You just feel and see the game
- 22:21Speaker 8: a little bit better when you're a little bit further
- 22:22Speaker 8: up and a little further removed.
- 22:24Speaker 10: And just conversely, is Holman planning to be in the
- 22:26Speaker 10: box or down on the field? Have you all decided that?
- 22:27Speaker 8: Yeah, Holman will be in the box as well. And
- 22:29Speaker 8: I think similar, very similar conversation. It's a conversation with
- 22:32Speaker 8: him about where are you comfortable? Where do you feel
- 22:35Speaker 8: the most comfortable doing this from? And I think, again,
- 22:38Speaker 8: his perspective is he feels the most comfortable being up there.
- 22:41Speaker 8: And so that's how we'll do it. He'll talk with
- 22:44Speaker 8: the green dot, too. Yeah, you kind of build it
- 22:47Speaker 8: around the coordinator is just always kind of how I've
- 22:49Speaker 8: seen it. So you talk to the coordinator about where
- 22:51Speaker 8: he's most comfortable, and then I think you have opinions
- 22:54Speaker 8: with the rest of the staff about where you're going
- 22:56Speaker 8: to balance things based on who needs to talk to
- 22:58Speaker 8: who and how you're going to put it all together.
- 23:00Speaker 9: We'll go to Carter front right.
- 23:03Speaker 14: Without Tiger, how are you guys feeling about your running
- 23:06Speaker 14: back depth, and do you feel like Reuben can be
- 23:09Speaker 14: a guy in those short yardage situations that y'all can
- 23:11Speaker 14: lean on?
- 23:12Speaker 8: Yeah, I hope so. I think him and Jamarian have
- 23:14Speaker 8: really had strong camps. We're really happy with what Carson
- 23:17Speaker 8: Baker and K.J. Edwards have done in fall camp, and
- 23:21Speaker 8: so we feel really good about the group that we have. Again,
- 23:26Speaker 8: until they do it, nothing is anything, but we certainly
- 23:30Speaker 8: feel and believe in what we have and believe in
- 23:32Speaker 8: Reuben to go out there and be that guy for
- 23:34Speaker 8: us every down.
- 23:35Speaker 1: That's Mike Elko today answering questions. I'm not sure how
- 23:41Speaker 1: different the questions will be on Monday. Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Three days in between. Hopefully he doesn't have to step
- 23:51Speaker 1: up and announce like any injuries in the next few days.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I know I'm guessing they're off on Sunday, I think.
- 23:58Speaker 1: But anyway, game week next week. That'll be good.
- 24:04Speaker 7: So.
- 24:06Speaker 1: I watched the Vince Young documentary last night on Netflix,
- 24:12Speaker 1: and I kept thinking to myself, it's not wildly different
- 24:21Speaker 1: from the Johnny Manziel documentary. And I was kind of
- 24:27Speaker 1: a little bit surprised, but not really.
- 24:32Speaker 2: It was.
- 24:35Speaker 1: You know, what has made headlines is the relationship with
- 24:40Speaker 1: Jeff Fisher, the Titans coach, right? We already knew kind
- 24:46Speaker 1: of the wide story. Vince was coddled at home with
- 24:53Speaker 1: his sisters. He didn't have a father. He wasn't used
- 24:57Speaker 1: to people telling him no. He was coddled at Texas. Um,
- 25:08Speaker 1: I mean, I knew that Steve McNair was his mentor.
- 25:13Speaker 1: He called him Pops. He was basically his father. And
- 25:18Speaker 1: I think most of the issues with Vince Young started
- 25:22Speaker 1: when Steve McNair was killed, basically. Then Vince had no mentor.
- 25:29Speaker 1: He had nobody to guide him. And I'm not making
- 25:32Speaker 1: excuses for that, by the way. But we already knew
- 25:40Speaker 1: that he wasn't a huge student of the game. But again,
- 25:46Speaker 1: when McNair left his life is really when things really
- 25:51Speaker 1: went downhill for Vince. Jeff Fisher was a no-nonsense guy, right?
- 26:00Speaker 1: It's like, hey, you're in the pros now. You know,
- 26:04Speaker 1: one of the incidences was Vince was late to the plane.
- 26:11Speaker 1: And he was told, he was on the phone with
- 26:14Speaker 1: his teammates saying, hey, I'm right here. And he drove
- 26:18Speaker 1: up onto the tarmac, I think, as the plane was leaving.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And Jeff Fisher's like, no. No, we're leaving. You be
- 26:26Speaker 1: here on time. And that kind of, you know, that started...
- 26:34Speaker 1: A war. I mean, Jeff Fisher wasn't. Again, this was
- 26:41Speaker 1: the NFL. But I will say in the last part.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Jeff Fisher came off a little petty. Vince went to treatment,
- 26:53Speaker 1: which I didn't know about. For alcohol and substance abuse.
- 27:01Speaker 1: He came back. He went to AA meetings, and part
- 27:06Speaker 1: of the steps is you ask for forgiveness. He wrote
- 27:09Speaker 1: a letter to Jeff Fisher apologizing for what he did,
- 27:18Speaker 1: you know, with that team. Jeff Fisher never responded. Jeff
- 27:24Speaker 1: Fisher's answer was, well, he misspelled my name. I'm not
- 27:28Speaker 1: even sure Vince wrote that letter. That came off as
- 27:31Speaker 1: really petty, right? To me, anyway. And never acknowledged, apparently,
- 27:38Speaker 1: Vince's apology. All you look at is the same thing
- 27:46Speaker 1: I looked at with Johnny in Cleveland. What a waste.
- 27:50Speaker 2: You know?
- 27:51Speaker 1: Now, Johnny didn't have the physical tools, the size that
- 27:56Speaker 1: Vince had, right? But he had lots of intangibles. And
- 28:02Speaker 1: he was obviously really good. But I came away after
- 28:08Speaker 1: watching this documentary last night, it's like, same thing. Because
- 28:13Speaker 1: he was the rookie of the year in the NFL, right?
- 28:16Speaker 1: And he took a team that had been, I don't know, whatever,
- 28:21Speaker 1: 4-10 or how many games they played, and won an
- 28:28Speaker 1: extra six games the next year, went to the playoffs
- 28:31Speaker 1: a couple of times. And was really pretty good. And
- 28:36Speaker 1: would have been much better had he been a man.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Right?
- 28:43Speaker 1: And not spent all his extra time partying. And done
- 28:47Speaker 1: the things you're supposed to do to be a professional.
- 28:51Speaker 1: But I came away thinking the same thing I came
- 28:53Speaker 1: away from the Manziel documentary. It's like, man, just wasted it.
- 29:00Speaker 1: And And now that they're both too old, it's like
- 29:04Speaker 1: they were looking back going, yeah, I did. I screwed up.
- 29:10Speaker 1: I wasted it. From that standpoint, it was sad, you know.
- 29:19Speaker 1: But Vince was pretty honest about it. I will say that.
- 29:23Speaker 1: You know, he was pretty honest about it. But now
- 29:26Speaker 1: he's 42, and it's like, wow, I got it. have
- 29:31Speaker 1: my life left. I'm not a football player. You know,
- 29:34Speaker 1: it's the same story we've seen over and over and
- 29:36Speaker 1: over again. Like, what am I going to do? I
- 29:39Speaker 1: don't have football. Yeah, it's sad to see all of
- 29:47Speaker 1: that go to waste. We've got a high school report

- 32:02Speaker 2: same old thing.
- 32:03Speaker 18: Welcome into the High School Report. I'm Caleb Rapley and
- 32:05Speaker 18: today we are jumping out to the Polaris Fun Center
- 32:08Speaker 18: phone line to visit with the head coach of the
- 32:10Speaker 18: Navasota Rattlers football team, Mr.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Trey Allen.
- 32:14Speaker 18: Coach, thanks for joining me today.
- 32:16Speaker 19: Appreciate you having me on.
- 32:17Speaker 18: Coach Allen has been very vocal as we mentioned before
- 32:21Speaker 18: we went on air that last night at the scrimmage,
- 32:24Speaker 18: Still feeling the effects of that, I'm sure. But it's
- 32:26Speaker 18: been a long time since we've got to see high
- 32:29Speaker 18: school football on the field. We've been talking about it
- 32:32Speaker 18: for the last month. We are finally ready to see
- 32:36Speaker 18: action on the field. So how has this offseason been
- 32:39Speaker 18: for you and your team?
- 32:41Speaker 19: Offseason has been great. You know, the kids have worked hard.
- 32:43Speaker 19: They've shown up all summer long. And even going back
- 32:46Speaker 19: in the spring.
- 32:48Speaker 7: You know, we kill them in the weight room and
- 32:49Speaker 7: out on the track and on the field and stuff,
- 32:51Speaker 7: just running and gunning. And they've responded really well.
- 32:55Speaker 19: We have a good group this year that is budding completely.
- 32:59Speaker 19: Of course, this group here, this group of seniors were–
- 33:04Speaker 19: when I first came into Navasota, and so they've been
- 33:06Speaker 19: in our system now for three years, and they're good leaders,
- 33:09Speaker 19: and they know how we operate and what our standard
- 33:12Speaker 19: is and what our expectations are, and so couldn't be
- 33:15Speaker 19: happier with who they are as young men, and hopefully
- 33:19Speaker 19: we get some Ws this year.
- 33:21Speaker 18: So on the offensive side of the ball, bringing back
- 33:23Speaker 18: a lot of experience, seven starters from 2025, and one
- 33:28Speaker 18: of the biggest names from those starters is your quarterback,
- 33:32Speaker 18: Jason Jablonski, who threw for, I think it was over 3,000
- 33:36Speaker 18: yards and 40 touchdowns last season, but a lot of
- 33:39Speaker 18: experience around him as well. So how big of a
- 33:43Speaker 18: benefit is that going to be for your offense?
- 33:46Speaker 7: It's huge, you know, because we're further along right now than.
- 33:49Speaker 19: We were last year offensively. And, you know, going back to.
- 33:53Speaker 7: The standard expectations, our kids know what to expect.
- 33:55Speaker 19: Our entire offensive line comes back.
- 33:57Speaker 7: Quarterback, our two running backs come back.
- 34:00Speaker 19: And then one of our wideouts come back. And so
- 34:03Speaker 19: it's very beneficial for us to be able to move
- 34:08Speaker 19: our offense.
- 34:08Speaker 7: Along and get to where we want to be earlier
- 34:11Speaker 7: than what we normally are. But we're also stronger. We're
- 34:15Speaker 7: more experienced.
- 34:15Speaker 5: We're stronger.
- 34:16Speaker 19: And so the little mistakes that maybe we were making
- 34:19Speaker 19: this time last year, we're not making them now. And
- 34:23Speaker 19: we have some great leaders on our offense, not just
- 34:25Speaker 19: offensive line, but Jace taking that role upon himself. And
- 34:30Speaker 19: he's been our starting quarterback. This is his third year.
- 34:32Speaker 19: And so there's not a whole lot that we can't
- 34:34Speaker 19: throw at him that.
- 34:35Speaker 7: He can't do.
- 34:35Speaker 19: And so we're excited to see what our offense can
- 34:38Speaker 19: do this year.
- 34:39Speaker 18: And then on the other side of the ball, the
- 34:42Speaker 18: defense– is going to be a lot younger than the offense,
- 34:45Speaker 18: only four starters returning, one of those being linebacker Davin Torres,
- 34:51Speaker 18: who was a big part of the Rattler defense last year.
- 34:55Speaker 18: So who are some young players that you are looking
- 34:59Speaker 18: to see step up and fill those holes?
- 35:02Speaker 19: There's a lot of kids. You're exactly right. We're inexperienced
- 35:05Speaker 19: on the defensive side with the exception of about two
- 35:07Speaker 19: or three of them because even the returning people from
- 35:11Speaker 19: last year, they may have been in a backup role
- 35:13Speaker 19: last year. And so we have a lot of kids
- 35:15Speaker 19: from JV from last year, a lot of kids in backup.
- 35:18Speaker 7: Roles last year. I'm excited to see people like Amari
- 35:23Speaker 7: Williams step up in.
- 35:25Speaker 19: Our defensive back group. He was a backup for us
- 35:28Speaker 19: last year, had a great.
- 35:29Speaker 7: Spring, worked his butt off, got stronger, got faster, and
- 35:34Speaker 7: really showed us some things during spring football and over
- 35:38Speaker 7: the summertime when we're doing sports-specific stuff. And so we're
- 35:41Speaker 7: excited to have him. Another one that a lot of
- 35:45Speaker 7: people don't know is Tristan Cross. Tristan Cross is a
- 35:49Speaker 7: sophomore that was a big-time player for us on the
- 35:53Speaker 7: freshman team last year as a running back and linebacker.
- 35:56Speaker 7: We have moved him to outside linebacker. He has good speed,
- 36:00Speaker 7: good strength.
- 36:02Speaker 19: I'm excited to see him come along throughout the year.
- 36:05Speaker 7: We're just going to be inexperienced.
- 36:07Speaker 19: And it's going to take some time for them to
- 36:10Speaker 19: start getting the confidence that they need on a.
- 36:12Speaker 7: Friday night because, you.
- 36:14Speaker 19: Know, bullets are going to be flying a lot faster
- 36:16Speaker 19: than they do on Thursday night. And so once they
- 36:18Speaker 19: get that, I think we'll be okay.
- 36:20Speaker 18: So this February was realignment in UIL. So your Rattlers
- 36:26Speaker 18: move from District 12, 4A Division 1 over to District 11.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Only one team on.
- 36:34Speaker 18: Your district schedule that was In your district last year
- 36:37Speaker 18: in the Needville Blue Jays, but other than that, four
- 36:40Speaker 18: new teams, or I think five new teams that you
- 36:43Speaker 18: have not played in district play. So the landscape is
- 36:46Speaker 18: very different. How big of an impact is that going
- 36:49Speaker 18: to make on your mindset going into district later in
- 36:53Speaker 18: the season?
- 36:54Speaker 7: Well, our mindset's still going to be the same. You know,
- 36:56Speaker 7: control what we can control. Do what we can do
- 36:58Speaker 7: just day by day. Don't worry about the future. You know,
- 37:03Speaker 7: all I'm worried about today is fifth period and getting
- 37:06Speaker 7: our kids to come down and to get a lift
- 37:08Speaker 7: in and to get some stretching in and a little
- 37:10Speaker 7: bit of running because we scrimmaged last night. But we're
- 37:13Speaker 7: not worried about that.
- 37:15Speaker 19: You know, like Royal, we played.
- 37:16Speaker 7: Them last year. They just wasn't in district. Needville, we
- 37:19Speaker 7: played them for several years now. But, look, I mean,
- 37:22Speaker 7: make no mistake about it. Our district is very, very tough.
- 37:26Speaker 19: I think we have five teams ranked.
- 37:27Speaker 7: In the top 30 out of our district, including us.
- 37:31Speaker 7: And depending on what poll you look at, some of
- 37:33Speaker 7: them are as high as number three in the state.
- 37:35Speaker 7: So it's a week in, week out, very, very tough district.
- 37:40Speaker 7: that we're going to have to have our A game
- 37:41Speaker 7: every day. And I think that it's going to be
- 37:43Speaker 7: a slobber knocker every dadgum week.
- 37:45Speaker 19: There is no easy week.
- 37:47Speaker 7: There is no, hey, let's see what this kid can
- 37:50Speaker 7: do this week and be able to get that kid
- 37:52Speaker 7: in some more playing time and all that kind of stuff.
- 37:55Speaker 7: It's going to be rough every week, but I think
- 37:58Speaker 7: we're up for the challenge.
- 37:59Speaker 19: The biggest thing, our kids, they know what.
- 38:01Speaker 7: Our expectations are. Our slogan is win the day. We're
- 38:05Speaker 7: not worried about tomorrow. We're not worried about anything. We're
- 38:07Speaker 7: just worried about today, and that's it. And so if
- 38:09Speaker 7: we can stack days on top of days, you know,
- 38:12Speaker 7: that's recipe for success.
- 38:13Speaker 18: Piggybacking off of that, looking at the schedule for 2026,
- 38:19Speaker 18: what are your goals for this team and what are
- 38:22Speaker 18: the keys to achieve those goals?
- 38:25Speaker 19: Well, our goal is to win football games. I think
- 38:29Speaker 19: that's everybody's.
- 38:29Speaker 7: Goal is to win football games, make it as far
- 38:31Speaker 7: as you can in the playoffs and all that kind
- 38:33Speaker 7: of stuff. But once again, I go back to I'm
- 38:37Speaker 7: not worried about the season as a whole. I'm worried
- 38:39Speaker 7: about today and today only.
- 38:41Speaker 19: And what I am looking for us to be able.
- 38:45Speaker 7: To do is– is to get our defensive side more experienced,
- 38:50Speaker 7: to get them understanding our schemes, playing fast without having
- 38:55Speaker 7: to think. Offensively, I'd love to be able to add
- 38:58Speaker 7: stuff that we didn't have.
- 38:59Speaker 19: Last year just because we are experienced on the offensive side.
- 39:04Speaker 19: But I can't help but just go back to say.
- 39:06Speaker 7: Look, I'm not worried about tomorrow. I'm worried about today,
- 39:09Speaker 7: and that's it. And so as long as we take
- 39:12Speaker 7: care of what we need to take care of day
- 39:13Speaker 7: by day, we're going to be okay.
- 39:15Speaker 18: And finally, we are getting ready for week one. The
- 39:20Speaker 18: Rattlers will go on the road to take on LaGrange
- 39:24Speaker 18: Friday night. So this is a team that you've played
- 39:27Speaker 18: in non-district play the last couple seasons. I think Navasota
- 39:30Speaker 18: and LaGrange were paired together in district a few years ago,
- 39:33Speaker 18: so very familiar with them. What do you look to
- 39:36Speaker 18: see from LaGrange?
- 39:39Speaker 7: Look, LaGrange is a good football program, right? I mean,
- 39:41Speaker 7: that's a historic football program. Coach Cooper and his staff
- 39:44Speaker 7: do a good job over there. They have a lot
- 39:46Speaker 7: of kids returning on both sides of the ball. Their
- 39:49Speaker 7: quarterback is explosive. They do a lot of quarterback reads
- 39:53Speaker 7: with him. He can throw the ball well. So it's
- 39:55Speaker 7: going to be very challenging for us defensively to be
- 39:59Speaker 7: able to cover receivers and at the same time be
- 40:02Speaker 7: able to stop the quarterback and the running back. Defensively,
- 40:06Speaker 7: they have some big guys up front. They come off
- 40:08Speaker 7: the football and look to make plays. They get off
- 40:10Speaker 7: blocks really well. They got a couple linebackers that fly around.
- 40:14Speaker 7: And so, like I said, there's not an easy game
- 40:17Speaker 7: on our schedule, which is a good thing. We don't
- 40:19Speaker 7: want easy games. We want to be challenged every week,
- 40:23Speaker 7: and the Grinch is certainly going to do that week one.
- 40:24Speaker 7: So we've got to have a good week of practice
- 40:28Speaker 7: this next week and as best we can with the
- 40:30Speaker 7: whole wet bulb crap and all that kind of junk. But,
- 40:32Speaker 7: you know, we're going to have to bring our A
- 40:35Speaker 7: game every week.
- 40:37Speaker 2: All right, Coach.
- 40:37Speaker 18: Well, I appreciate your time today, and good luck to
- 40:40Speaker 18: your Rattlers this season.
- 40:41Speaker 7: Thank you very much. Win the Ducks.

- 42:27Speaker 1: we're going to hear from Anto Saka. We have our
- 42:31Speaker 1: Clark Eisenhower outdoor edition. I'm going to be visiting with
- 42:35Speaker 1: wildlife biologist Billy Lambert. That is coming up in the
- 42:39Speaker 1: second hour and lots of active animals, I'm afraid, as well.
- 42:45Speaker 7: All right.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Astro's report is brought to you today by Oscar &

- 43:24Speaker 20: With your Houston Astros report, I'm Dylan Moore.
- 43:27Speaker 23: The Astros fall to the Yankees as the offense struggled.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Details next. Here's business analyst David Johnson.
- 43:33Speaker 5: Barcodes, you see them everywhere, on every store shelf, every
- 43:37Speaker 5: product you touch. But in business, a barcode isn't just
- 43:39Speaker 5: a label. It's the heartbeat of your operation. So when
- 43:42Speaker 5: you're ready to streamline and automate your company, who do
- 43:45Speaker 5: you call? Texas Barcode Systems. They've been the industry-leading supplier
- 43:49Speaker 5: of barcoding equipment and supplies for over 30 years.
- 43:51Speaker 1: They're based right here in North Texas.

- 43:57Speaker 5: at TexasBarcode.com.
- 43:58Speaker 1: That's TexasBarcode.com. Local experts, national standards.
- 44:03Speaker 23: The Houston Astros struggled offensively last night as they managed
- 44:06Speaker 23: just four hits in a 9-3 loss to the Yankees.
- 44:09Speaker 23: The Astros did score first with an RBI double by
- 44:11Speaker 23: Jose Altuve in the first inning.
- 44:13Speaker 17: First pitch and Altuve hits it in the center.
- 44:15Speaker 7: Grisham.
- 44:16Speaker 17: Going back on it, still going back, can't get it.
- 44:19Speaker 17: It's over his head and goes all the way to
- 44:20Speaker 17: the wall. Around third, Paredes coming home, and he will score.
- 44:24Speaker 17: Altuve in the second base, and it's 1-0 Astros. A
- 44:29Speaker 17: misplay by Trent Grisham in center field.
- 44:32Speaker 23: The Yankees would respond, though, playing two in the bottom
- 44:34Speaker 23: half of the inning, and the game would remain close
- 44:36Speaker 23: until the seventh when New York scored four, followed by
- 44:39Speaker 23: two in the eighth. The Astros dropped to 66-67 on
- 44:42Speaker 23: the season, and the rubber match is today as Hayden
- 44:45Speaker 23: Wesneski takes the hill against Garrett Cole. First pitch is
- 44:48Speaker 23: scheduled for 6.05. With your Houston Astros report, I'm Dylan Moore.
- 44:53Speaker 24: Howdy, this is Aaron Fletcher with Citizen State Bank fighting
- 44:56Speaker 24: Texas Aggie class of 1999. Here at Citizen State Bank,
- 45:00Speaker 24: we're proud to stand.
- 45:01Speaker 1: Behind the Aggies.
- 45:02Speaker 24: For over 100 years, we've been a trusted teammate in
- 45:05Speaker 24: our communities with local people making local decisions. We pride
- 45:09Speaker 24: ourselves in offering big bank products with a personal connection
- 45:12Speaker 24: that only CSB can deliver. We're proud to support the
- 45:15Speaker 24: Texas A & M Aggies this season. Citizen State Bank,
- 45:18Speaker 24: local people, local decisions since 1925.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Member FDIC. on a warm summer's Eve.
- 45:32Speaker 1: You know, since we're playing Kenny, uh, Stan, let's do, uh,
- 45:37Speaker 1: next time. Let's do a little islands in the stream
- 45:39Speaker 1: with Kenny and Dolly. How about that? Uh, Scotty Scheffler
- 45:47Speaker 1: is four under par and playing the par five 18. Uh,
- 45:52Speaker 1: he had a 344 yard drive, so he will be
- 45:56Speaker 1: going for the green in, in two. Um, Looking at
- 46:00Speaker 1: the FedEx Cup right now. As we mentioned, as I mentioned,
- 46:07Speaker 1: Anto Saka is a guy. Somebody has their top 30
- 46:12Speaker 1: freak list. I forget which. Who is that? ESPN guy, maybe. Anyway,
- 46:18Speaker 1: they always put out their top 30 freak list. And
- 46:21Speaker 1: that means, you know, the freakiest athletes in college football are.
- 46:27Speaker 1: This guy made that list. And let's hear from Anto Saka.
- 46:37Speaker 12: One thing I know as well, one thing I really
- 46:39Speaker 12: like about this game, how he used me, is just
- 46:41Speaker 12: allowing me to play a little bit wider, use my
- 46:44Speaker 12: athletic ability more, more upfield, attack style defense.
- 46:49Speaker 2: So it's been fun. I think Hemphill also said you've
- 46:52Speaker 2: been playing both end positions.
- 46:54Speaker 10: What's that kind of dynamic been like and just kind
- 46:57Speaker 10: of how.
- 46:57Speaker 21: You feel like each spot kind of fits your skill set?
- 47:00Speaker 12: Yeah, so throughout spring ball, I was working more primarily
- 47:03Speaker 12: at the end position. And then during our summer training session,
- 47:07Speaker 12: that's when I really took the time to sit there
- 47:10Speaker 12: and play looking like a jack position just to give
- 47:12Speaker 12: myself some more flexibility to be asked whether they need
- 47:14Speaker 12: me on the field.
- 47:16Speaker 2: How hard was it to battle the assistant pass rush.
- 47:20Speaker 8: When you were at Northwestern?
- 47:21Speaker 25: I'm wondering, were you facing double teams, triple teams frequently,
- 47:27Speaker 25: or how often would you say you were double teamed?
- 47:31Speaker 12: I'll say more times than not, but you know, I mean,
- 47:34Speaker 12: that's not really the mindset that I have. The mindset
- 47:36Speaker 12: I have is that I'm going to get the quarterback
- 47:37Speaker 12: by any means necessary, so.
- 47:40Speaker 2: And what was your reaction to being on the freaks list?
- 47:43Speaker 21: I don't know if you saw that.
- 47:45Speaker 26: When did you first start taking weightlifting and all that
- 47:48Speaker 26: kind of stuff seriously?
- 47:49Speaker 12: Well, one, it's a blessing, but just nice to see
- 47:53Speaker 12: the people acknowledging the hard work that I put out
- 47:54Speaker 12: here on the field, out of the weight room. I've
- 47:57Speaker 12: always kind of... Been athletic, I love sports since I
- 48:01Speaker 12: was a young kid. Really didn't start lifting in a
- 48:04Speaker 12: serious way until about sophomore year of high school. So,
- 48:08Speaker 12: but yeah, I mean, it was a blessing to be
- 48:11Speaker 12: on that list. Hopefully I can really bring that out
- 48:13Speaker 12: to the field this year for y'all.
- 48:14Speaker 26: With Tommy, just what difference have you seen in yourself.
- 48:18Speaker 14: Being able to work on him often?
- 48:20Speaker 26: And what has maybe benefited you the most working with
- 48:23Speaker 26: him this offseason?
- 48:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Cosmophily has been the greatest.
- 48:26Speaker 12: One thing that I know is that we're a real
- 48:28Speaker 12: big Olympic lifting type program, real big on power output
- 48:32Speaker 12: and explosiveness. And that's done wonders for me. All my
- 48:36Speaker 12: numbers have skyrocketed. All my major lifts at least 40 pounds.
- 48:40Speaker 12: So they have a science here and it works and
- 48:43Speaker 12: pays off.
- 48:44Speaker 26: When you, uh, now that you've been here through the
- 48:46Speaker 26: spring and then through the summer and everything, who are
- 48:49Speaker 26: some of the guys that you look at as a
- 48:52Speaker 26: patch rusher and say, you.
- 48:53Speaker 2: Know, this guy's really good? Like on the sand? Yeah.
- 48:56Speaker 7: Oh.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Who impresses you?
- 48:59Speaker 12: The way that everybody is really taking the jump, I'm
- 49:02Speaker 12: so excited about T.J.
- 49:03Speaker 7: Searcy.
- 49:03Speaker 2: I'm so excited about Marco Jones, Landon Rain, D.J. Hicks.
- 49:07Speaker 2: It's just everybody, the way.
- 49:09Speaker 12: We've improved from the winter until this point in our
- 49:12Speaker 12: pass rush and our ability to stop the run, it's going.
- 49:15Speaker 2: To be a show to watch.
- 49:17Speaker 27: Conversely, on the other side of that, who are the
- 49:19Speaker 27: offensive liners? kind of impressed you and kind of give
- 49:21Speaker 27: you the best battle so far?
- 49:23Speaker 12: Obviously our guys, Wilk and Tyree, they're the real deal.
- 49:27Speaker 12: There's always good work going against the iron sharpest iron,
- 49:30Speaker 12: so I'm excited for y'all to see them as well.
- 49:32Speaker 27: What's it like working under Lyle Hamill and how have
- 49:35Speaker 27: you experienced him as a defensive.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Coordinator so far?
- 49:37Speaker 12: Yeah, Coach Hamill, he's a great guy, real energetic, real passionate,
- 49:41Speaker 12: easy to talk to, knows balls. So any questions that
- 49:44Speaker 12: I have about the scheme, me being a new guy,
- 49:47Speaker 12: trying to learn multiple decisions, he's been really helpful in that,
- 49:50Speaker 12: helping me transition as easy as possible.
- 49:53Speaker 2: How intricate is.
- 49:55Speaker 26: Kind of a Mike Elko defense, especially for a defensive end?
- 49:58Speaker 2: You know, it makes you think a little bit, but
- 50:01Speaker 2: it's okay. It works.
- 50:02Speaker 12: Proof is in the pudding. You see the evidence, you
- 50:05Speaker 12: see the film. So being able to kind of just
- 50:07Speaker 12: really come in and learn a defense that's a little
- 50:09Speaker 12: bit more intricate, I feel like a little bit more pro-style,
- 50:11Speaker 12: it's been great for me.
- 50:12Speaker 2: It's always going to help my development.
- 50:14Speaker 12: And so coming off of that, you being a new guy,
- 50:16Speaker 12: kind of anything you learned in Northwestern, we.
- 50:18Speaker 9: Kind of have to unlearn and learn here with this team.
- 50:25Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, it's just a little bit of, we
- 50:27Speaker 12: play different techniques, so maybe I hit new guys sometimes
- 50:31Speaker 12: when things are going fast. I might revert back to
- 50:34Speaker 12: old habits for four years, but, you know, that's what
- 50:36Speaker 12: practice is for, to fix those old habits.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Do you have any personal goals now? We're going to
- 50:39Speaker 2: second you to fall camp.
- 50:40Speaker 27: Any personal goals you want to accomplish before.
- 50:42Speaker 2: The season kicks off?
- 50:45Speaker 12: At this point, no, really, I feel like I've done
- 50:47Speaker 12: a great job in the weight room, improving all my
- 50:49Speaker 12: numbers as possible. Personal goals out on the field, just
- 50:53Speaker 12: be the best version.
- 50:53Speaker 2: Of myself every day.
- 50:54Speaker 12: Keep on improving, keep on pushing my teammates on the
- 50:57Speaker 12: D-line and everybody else around me.
- 50:58Speaker 2: That's really it. What are your expectations for this defense
- 51:02Speaker 2: this season? To be the best defense in the country,
- 51:04Speaker 2: simple as that.
- 51:05Speaker 10: What have been some of the signs that give you
- 51:08Speaker 10: confidence that you guys can.
- 51:09Speaker 2: Maybe achieve that? We got a lot of guys who
- 51:11Speaker 2: can rush the pass, and we got a lot of
- 51:13Speaker 2: guys who are gritty.
- 51:14Speaker 12: A lot of guys that want to go out there
- 51:15Speaker 12: and show the best of their position.
- 51:17Speaker 27: First day of pads, obviously, did that crank up? What
- 51:20Speaker 27: does that mean to you, and how is the energy
- 51:21Speaker 27: level today with that?
- 51:24Speaker 12: It's more so first day pass, more like a formality.
- 51:27Speaker 12: At the end of the day, we were at 100%
- 51:31Speaker 12: all day, every day. Whether we're in spiders or whether
- 51:34Speaker 12: we're in uppers, just short pass or full pass, mindset
- 51:37Speaker 12: stays the same.
- 51:37Speaker 2: It's time to go.
- 51:38Speaker 26: How would you describe the defense going into the season
- 51:41Speaker 26: from what you've.
- 51:43Speaker 23: Seen so far?
- 51:44Speaker 2: Downhill, explosive, gritty, nasty.
- 51:48Speaker 25: It's been a lot of years, obviously, since you started
- 51:50Speaker 25: your college football career.
- 51:51Speaker 8: Do you remember that first day of fullback when you
- 51:53Speaker 8: were at Northwestern?
- 51:54Speaker 2: Did you sort of have like a welcome to college
- 51:56Speaker 2: football moment back then?
- 51:59Speaker 12: Yeah, I would say, yeah, just regular run play. It
- 52:03Speaker 12: was more of a stretch type, mid-zone type play. But
- 52:07Speaker 12: with a backside guard pulling, you know, you squeeze down.
- 52:11Speaker 2: My eyes are all wrong. I'm just trying to figure
- 52:14Speaker 2: out what to do at that point.
- 52:15Speaker 12: Got a fifth-year senior guard. coming down, all 340 of them,
- 52:22Speaker 12: blindsided me, sent me flying.
- 52:23Speaker 2: That's it, yeah. That's college.
- 52:26Speaker 27: Not many names did you give any of those moments to.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Any of the freshmen today? You're not going to talk
- 52:33Speaker 2: to me about that.
- 52:34Speaker 25: How has that line-to-line competition really looked so far?
- 52:38Speaker 2: And did it really ramp up after.
- 52:40Speaker 25: You guys were going live?
- 52:42Speaker 2: What do you mean by that?
- 52:44Speaker 25: Just like big picture, like how has that offensive line,
- 52:47Speaker 25: defensive line competition really looked so far?
- 52:49Speaker 14: Oh, okay.
- 52:49Speaker 2: You guys versed each other.
- 52:51Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 52:51Speaker 25: And did you feel like a legitimate step up in
- 52:54Speaker 25: the atmosphere, I guess, at that point after you guys.
- 52:56Speaker 7: Were going live now?
- 52:57Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 52:58Speaker 12: I mean, like I was saying– The competition's been the same.
- 53:01Speaker 12: Both sides of the ball understand that it's time to go.
- 53:05Speaker 12: Us being in full pads is just now we can tackle,
- 53:08Speaker 12: but it's been all gas, no brakes the entire time.
- 53:11Speaker 26: You mentioned your numbers skyrocketing.
- 53:14Speaker 13: In the weight room.
- 53:15Speaker 26: What would maybe be the biggest difference? Is it just
- 53:18Speaker 26: a strength thing for you, or is it a whole
- 53:20Speaker 26: bunch of different areas? What would be kind of that
- 53:22Speaker 26: biggest difference if you're on the field as well?
- 53:26Speaker 8: Um.
- 53:28Speaker 2: Ask that question again for me, I'm sorry.
- 53:29Speaker 26: Just the weight room number, skyrocketing, how will that impact
- 53:33Speaker 26: your games?
- 53:33Speaker 12: Oh, man, by far, me being stronger against the run,
- 53:37Speaker 12: that's always been one thing that I wanted to improve
- 53:39Speaker 12: on in my game. Not necessarily just being labeled as
- 53:41Speaker 12: a DPR type of guy, but a guy who can
- 53:43Speaker 12: be firm in the run game.
- 53:45Speaker 2: And just being getting stronger, obviously, to hold the point,
- 53:47Speaker 2: you got to be a strong dude.
- 53:49Speaker 12: So I feel like hopefully with these new weight gains,
- 53:51Speaker 12: I'll be able to keep on improving on that.
- 53:54Speaker 10: Is there any highlight or two that's really stood out
- 53:56Speaker 10: to you that the D-line's made so far in preseason practice?
- 53:59Speaker 2: Any highlights? Yeah. There's too many to count.
- 54:02Speaker 12: One guy that I really like that's been really put on,
- 54:05Speaker 12: I feel like, the highlight tape is Marco. The other day,
- 54:08Speaker 12: Marco brought up a big spin, and I've never really
- 54:11Speaker 12: seen that in person.
- 54:12Speaker 2: And the way he executed, like, I'm excited for Marco Jones.
- 54:16Speaker 2: I'm so excited for Marco Jones.
