- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello. Today, I'll be reading from business sources in Lexington
- 0:04and Louisville, including The Lane Report and others from around
- 0:07the Commonwealth. Your reader today is Julia Shane. As a reminder,
- 0:12RADIOI is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:15blind or who have other disabilities that make it difficult
- 0:18to read printed material. Our first article comes from the
- 0:22March thirty first, twenty twenty sixth edition of The Lane
- 0:25Report and is titled EKU is number one university in
- 0:29the United States for Military Friendly Schools. Eastern Kentucky University
- 0:34has been named number one large public university in the
- 0:37nation in the twenty twenty six twenty seven Military Friendly
- 0:40School's rankings. EKU has a long history of excellence in
- 0:45veterans education, and we are beyond proud to be recognized
- 0:49as the best in the country for military friendly schools,
- 0:52said EKU President David McFadden. For EKU, there is no
- 0:56greater honor than serving those who have served our country.
- 1:00Eku's number one spot for twenty twenty six twenty seven
- 1:03follows three years of placing within the top five in
- 1:06the Military Friendly School's review and the only school in
- 1:10Kentucky to make the top ten lists last year. I
- 1:13am extremely proud of the work that EKU has done
- 1:16to support military connected students, said Joshua Maynard, a veteran
- 1:20and director of EKU Veteran's Upward Bound. As both an
- 1:24alum and an employee, I have seen firsthand the dedication
- 1:28that the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs OMVA exhibits
- 1:33in caring for our students. The commitment not only helps
- 1:37students succeed academically, but also ensures they feel valued and
- 1:41supported throughout their journey. More than thirty two hundred organizations
- 1:46across the country participated in this year's Military Friendly Schools survey.
- 1:51Ratings were determined by a variety of factors, including thresholds
- 1:55for recruitment, retention, academic progress, graduate quation rates, career placement,
- 2:02and support services for veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses.
- 2:08Earning the Military Friendly designation is more than a badge
- 2:12of honour. It is a reflection of an institution's deep
- 2:15rooted values and strategic commitment to those who served, said
- 2:19Kayla Lopez, vice president of Memberships Military Friendly. These schools
- 2:25don't just open doors for veterans and military spouses. They
- 2:29build sustainable pathways for academic success and long term impact.
- 2:34Their support is transformative, proving that investing in military connected
- 2:38students is both a moral imperative and a standard for
- 2:42educational excellence. EKU is home to over nineteen hundred veterans,
- 2:47active duty service members, Reserve National Guard members, and military
- 2:52spouses and children as of the fall of twenty twenty five.
- 2:56The university offers several scholarship opportunities and programs aimed at
- 3:00helping veterans transition from military service to student life. Eku's
- 3:06OMVA assists students in navigating VA benefits and facilitates priority
- 3:12registration and specialized advising for veterans. The Veterans Education and
- 3:17Transition Support VETS Center on campus provides a centralized campus
- 3:23space for veterans and military service members. EKU awards educational
- 3:28credit for military training and reduces tuition for active duty
- 3:32service members and their spouses. The next article from the
- 3:36Lane Report is titled Bluegrass Home sales stay strong in
- 3:40February weather slow's new inventory. After a strong start to
- 3:45the year, February reversed course for new listings and pending
- 3:50home sales as buyers and sellers were hindered by harsh weather.
- 3:54Previous activity, however, didn't slow as closed transactions rose ginuing
- 4:00the momentum for the third consecutive month after a double
- 4:04digit increase to start the year. New listings dropped significantly
- 4:07in February, with one one hundred ninety eight homes coming
- 4:12on the market. The month's new listing total was down
- 4:14eleven percent from last year's one thousand, three hundred and
- 4:17forty seven. For the year, new listings remain up five
- 4:21percent compared to twenty twenty five, with property showings lower
- 4:25in February by nine percent compared to the previous year.
- 4:29Pending sales followed with one thousand three homes going under contract.
- 4:34That's a four percent decline from the one thousand forty
- 4:37one homes in twenty twenty five and the lowest February
- 4:41total since twenty fifteen, showing the impact of the weather
- 4:45across the region. With a strong start of the year,
- 4:48pending sales are still up by four percent year to date.
- 4:51February hit the region pretty hard because homes were inaccessible
- 4:55for showings and listings couldn't get prepped to go on
- 4:58the market, said Mike and And president of Bluegrass Realtors.
- 5:02When events like that happen, it affects the local market,
- 5:06but that should be a temporary disruption with a quick
- 5:08return to the upcoming spring market. Closed residential transactions were
- 5:14up thirteen percent with eight hundred eighty eight sales in
- 5:17twenty twenty six compared to seven hundred eighty seven last year,
- 5:22making this the highest February total since twenty twenty two.
- 5:26Sales were also up ten percent from the previous month
- 5:29and continue a three month trend of increases. Nationally, home
- 5:34sales dropped again for the second month, showing the current
- 5:37strength of the Bluegrass region housing market. Single family sales
- 5:41in February saw a fourteen percent increase with eight hundred
- 5:45thirty six homes sold compared to seven hundred thirty four
- 5:48last year, while townhomes and condo sales dipped slightly from
- 5:52fifty three units in twenty twenty five to fifty two
- 5:56this year. Townhouses and condos represented just over six percent
- 6:00of the market. New construction sales slowed by five percent
- 6:04this year, with eighty eight sales compared to ninety three
- 6:08and twenty twenty five. For the year, new homes are
- 6:11one percent ahead through February. Home prices in February closed
- 6:16at two hundred eighty five thousand dollars compared to two
- 6:19hundred seventy thousand dollars last year, a six percent gain.
- 6:24The year over year improvement now stands at three months
- 6:27after snapping a multiple year string of increases. In November
- 6:31of twenty twenty five, the median price dropped less than
- 6:35one percent from two hundred eighty six thousand, five hundred
- 6:38forty dollars the previous month. Single family home prices in
- 6:43February rose three percent to two hundred eighty five thousand dollars,
- 6:46up from two hundred and seventy eight thousand dollars last year,
- 6:50while town home and condo prices jumped thirty four percent
- 6:54to two hundred sixty eight thousand, six hundred fifteen dollars
- 6:57from one hundred ninety nine thousand, nine hundred one fifty
- 7:00dollars in twenty twenty five. With an increase in both
- 7:03sales and prices for the month, the volume of real
- 7:06estate sales landed at two hundred eighty million dollars for
- 7:10the month, an improvement of sixteen percent compared to the
- 7:14two hundred forty one million dollars recorded in February of
- 7:17twenty twenty five. Despite the weather, scheduled closings took place
- 7:22on time. Continued inman However, with pending sales lower in February,
- 7:27the start to the spring may experience a slower number
- 7:30of closed transactions as buyers have to catch up with
- 7:34missed showing opportunities due to factors at play. Overall housing
- 7:39inventory improved year over year, but with more home selling
- 7:42and new listings down, showed a drop from the previous month.
- 7:47February had three thousand, six hundred forty seven residential properties
- 7:51for sale, a four percent increase from last year's three thousand,
- 7:55five hundred one homes and the highest February total since
- 7:58twenty twenty. Compared to January, the number was down six
- 8:02percent when three eight hundred ninety seven available properties were available.
- 8:08Inventory has now posted twenty eight months of consecutive year
- 8:11over year growth. Months of inventory MOI in February was
- 8:17lower than the previous month due to a more active market.
- 8:21MOI hit four point one months, a nine percent drop
- 8:25from the previous year and down fifteen percent from the
- 8:28previous month. February twenty twenty six still had the second
- 8:32highest monthly MOI total in a decade, behind last year.
- 8:37Homes are spending fifty seven days on the market so
- 8:39far this year, as both January and February averaged that
- 8:43amount of time compared to last year. However, February is
- 8:47down two days from fifty nine in twenty twenty five.
- 8:51The median days on the market also dropped to thirty
- 8:53three days, down from thirty six days the previous year.
- 8:57In twenty twenty six, buyers are moving a little more quickly,
- 9:00it appears, stated Inman this may be a result of
- 9:04the slight drop in interest rates we've experienced over the
- 9:07past couple of months and people not wanting to get
- 9:10caught up in more competition when the spring market comes around.
- 9:15Interest rates dropped to the lowest levels since the mid
- 9:17twenty twenty twos, with an average interest rate in February
- 9:22at six point zero five percent. From the previous year,
- 9:25the rate was twelve percent lower, when it averaged six
- 9:28point eight four percent. Rates have been consistently falling since
- 9:32the second half of twenty twenty five, although recent indications
- 9:36show they may rise slightly in the coming months. The

- 14:54next article from the LANE Report is titled Kentucky retailers
- 14:58expect strong Easter s spending to reach record levels. The
- 15:03Kentucky Retail Federation KrF today highlighted strong expectations for Easter
- 15:10sales across the Commonwealth, as national consumer spending is projected
- 15:14to reach a record twenty four point nine billion dollars
- 15:17this year, according to new survey data from the National
- 15:21Retail Federation and Prosper Insights and Analytics. Kentucky retailers are
- 15:27prepping for a busy Easter season, with shoppers expected to
- 15:31spend an average of nearly one hundred and ninety six
- 15:34dollars per person on Easter related purchases, including candy, food, gifts, decorations,
- 15:41and clothing. Easter is an important holiday for many Kentuckians,
- 15:46and even with economic challenges, families continue to prioritize meaningful celebrations.
- 15:52Retailers across Kentucky are prepared to help families continue traditions
- 15:57that create special memories, said Todd at Griffin, president of
- 16:01the Kentucky Retail Federation. Candy and food remain the most
- 16:05popular Easter purchases nationwide, with a majority of consumers planning
- 16:10to buy suites and prepare holiday meals. Spending on food
- 16:14alone is expected to reach seven point five billion dollars,
- 16:18making it the largest category, followed by gifts, clothing, candy,
- 16:22and flowers. According to the survey, eighty percent of consumers
- 16:27planned to celebrate Easter with popular activities including cooking a
- 16:31holiday meal, visiting family and friends, attending church services, and
- 16:37hosting Easter egg hunts. KrF noted that Kentucky retailers, from
- 16:42independent main street shops to larger chains, are well positioned
- 16:46to meet consumer demand through a mix of in store experiences,
- 16:50seasonal promotions, and expanded product offerings. Discount stores continue to
- 16:56be the top shopping destination, though many consumers are also
- 17:00turning to department stores and online retailers to complete their
- 17:04holiday purchases. KrF emphasized that local retailers provide personalized service
- 17:11and strengthen community connection. Shopping local during the holidays has
- 17:15a direct impact on Kentucky communities. Griffin added, when consumers
- 17:20choose to support local businesses, they're helping sustain jobs, strengthen
- 17:25local economies, and keep our communities vibrant. The survey of
- 17:30seven eight hundred forty five adult consumers was conducted March
- 17:34second through March eleventh, and has a margin of air
- 17:37of plus or minus one point one percentage point. The
- 17:40next article comes from the March twenty fourth, twenty twenty
- 17:43six edition of Business Lexington and is titled Toyota marks
- 17:48forty years in Kentucky with one billion dollar investment. Forty
- 17:54years after breaking ground on its first wholly owned US
- 17:57manufacturing plant, Toyota is doubling down on its Kentucky routes
- 18:02with a large new investment aimed at expanding production and
- 18:06preparing for the next generation of vehicles. The company on
- 18:10Tuesday marked the fortieth anniversary of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky,
- 18:15now its largest plant in the world, by announcing a
- 18:18one billion dollar investment across its Kentucky and Indiana operations.
- 18:23The move underscores Toyota's long term commitment to US manufacturing
- 18:28and comes as part of a broader pledge announced in
- 18:31November of twenty twenty five to invest up to ten
- 18:34billion dollars in its US plans over the next five years.
- 18:38Toyota first established its Kentucky footprint in nineteen eighty six,
- 18:43a pivotal moment that helped anchor its American production strategy.
- 18:48The Georgetown Plan would go on to produce millions of vehicles,
- 18:52beginning with the Toyota Camry, and remains a cornerstone of
- 18:56the company's North American operations. Toyota's investment in the US
- 19:01is for the long term, tied to our philosophy of
- 19:04building where we sell and buying where we build, said
- 19:07Mark Templin, executive vice president and chief operating officer of
- 19:11Toyota Motor North America. Our teams have contributed to the design,
- 19:17engineering and assembly of more than thirty five million vehicles
- 19:21four customers in the United States. The largest share of
- 19:25new investment, eight hundred million dollars, will go to the
- 19:28Kentucky plant. The funding will support Toyota's multi pathway approach
- 19:33to electrification, including preparations to produce a second battery electric
- 19:39vehicle at the facility. It will also expand capacity for
- 19:43two of the company's top selling models, the Camera and
- 19:46the Raft four. An additional two hundred million dollars will
- 19:50be invested in Toyota's Indiana plant to boost production of
- 19:54the Grand Highlander SUV. The vehicle will be assembled alongside
- 19:58the Sienna minivan in the plant's East facility. While production
- 20:03continues in the West plant with the Lexus TX for
- 20:07Kentucky leaders, the anniversary and investment highlight the plant's continued
- 20:11role as both an economic engine and a workforce hub.
- 20:15For Toyota, manufacturing has always been about more than building vehicles.
- 20:20It's about investing in people, said Carrie Creech, president of
- 20:24Toyota Kentucky. Ensuring customer satisfaction and safety starts with each
- 20:30team member on the production line. Our ten thousand team
- 20:33members are the heart of Toyota. In addition to capital investments,
- 20:38Toyota announced new funding aimed at workforce development and education
- 20:43across the Commonwealth. The company will contribute four million dollars
- 20:47to its Driving Possibilities Initiative, a STEM focused program designed
- 20:52to expand access to science, technology, engineering, and math education
- 20:57in Scott and Fayette County schools. The new funding total
- 21:01investment in the program in Kentucky exceeds eleven million dollars.
- 21:05Toyota also committed four hundred thousand dollars to support the
- 21:08Manufacturing Engineering Program at Eastern Kentucky University, part of a
- 21:14broader effort to strengthen the pipeline of skilled workers for
- 21:17advanced manufacturing careers. The next article comes from the March
- 21:21twenty seventh, twenty twenty sixth edition of the Louisville Courier
- 21:25Journal and is titled Jack Daniels maker Brown Foreman in
- 21:29merger talks with Pernaud Rickard, written by Olivia Evans. Hours
- 21:35after rumors started swirling that Louisville based spirits maker Brown
- 21:39Foreman was exploring a merger, the company confirmed reports in
- 21:43a March twenty sixth statement. Brown Foreman, the maker behind
- 21:47American whiskies including Jack Daniels, Old Forster and Woodward Reserve,
- 21:53said on March twenty sixth it is engaged in discussions
- 21:57with Pernaud Ricard, the company's state. Further said, Brown Foreman
- 22:01regularly explores and evaluates opportunities for the business, like the
- 22:05potential merger with the French spirit's company. Pernaud Recard, the
- 22:11world's second largest spirits maker, has a portfolio of more
- 22:14than two hundred brands, including American whiskey makers like Rabbit Hole,
- 22:19but also is home to a suite of other globally
- 22:22known brands, including Absolute Vodka, Jamison, Irish Whiskey, Valentine, Scotch,
- 22:29Martel Cognate and Malibu Rum. If a deal were to
- 22:33be reached between the two sides, it would create a
- 22:36merger of equals, Brown Foreman said. In a statement from
- 22:40pernad Recard, the company said the contemplated combination would create
- 22:45a global spirits leader with enhanced scale, a powerful brand portfolio,
- 22:51and a balanced geographic footprint, all anchored by two iconic families.
- 22:56Operational synergies would be significant, leveraging Brown Foreman's iconic brands,
- 23:01including Jack Daniels and pernade Recards, global distribution strength and
- 23:07exposure to highest growth potential markets. Both companies' statements said
- 23:12no agreement has been made yet, and neither intends to
- 23:16offer further communication until an agreement is reached or discussions
- 23:19are terminated. Both companies have felt the multi year sales
- 23:23strain as demand for spirits products have continued to drop.
- 23:28Both companies have previously cut jobs, closed facilities, or launched
- 23:32strategic restructuring plans in an effort to deal with consumers
- 23:37who have less disposable income and are increasingly health conscious,
- 23:41while navigating the shifting tariff landscape and dealing with growing
- 23:46competitive beverage trends like cannabis drinks, Routers first reported. Javier
- 23:52Gonzalez Lastra, an analyst at Bernberg Bank, told Routers a
- 23:57merger between the two companies would not solve their growth challenges,
- 24:01though he noted there were clear synergies. They have clear
- 24:05overlaps in the US. There is also some overlap in Europe,
- 24:09he said, adding that a deal could deliver significant cost
- 24:13savings for Brown Foreman. The merger talks follow a challenging
- 24:17twenty twenty five that was marred with on again, off
- 24:20again tariffs and a global trade war impacting the company.
- 24:24In March, Brown Foreman reported its developed international markets, which
- 24:29include Germany, Australia, and the United Kingdom, France and Canada
- 24:34collectively declined by two percent, while the net sales in
- 24:38the United States declined by eight percent. Additionally, the company
- 24:42saw a nearly sixty percent decline in Canada. One recent
- 24:46report of the distilled spirits industry found that full year
- 24:50exports from the US to Canada in twenty twenty five
- 24:54crested at eighty nine million dollars, down nearly sixty three
- 24:58percent from twenty twenty four, the Courier Journal previously reported. Additionally,
- 25:04in a March fourth earnings report, Brown Foreman posted a
- 25:07two percent decrease in net sales and a one percent
- 25:11decrease in gross profit after continued trade disputes and lower
- 25:15used barrel sales. A bright spot for Brown Foremen out
- 25:19of its March earnings report was seen with a sixteen
- 25:22percent increase of net sales in emerging international markets, largely
- 25:27attributed to double digit growth in Mexico and Brazil. The
- 25:31next article from the Courier Journal is titled Jeff Bezos
- 25:34backed EV startup to open seven point eight million dollar
- 25:38facility in Louisville. Slate Auto, the Jeff Bezos backed electric
- 25:43vehicle startup, plans to put its roughly seven point eight
- 25:46million dollar vinyl wrap kit manufacturing fulfillment facility in Jefferson
- 25:51County at five five zero zero Shepherdsville Road. The auto
- 25:55startup will produce low costs, modular, fully customizable e EV
- 26:00two door two passenger pickup trucks, with hopes to start
- 26:04producing and selling the vehicles in twenty twenty six. The
- 26:07vehicles made by Slate Auto at its Warsaw, Indiana plant,
- 26:12nearly four hours from Louisville, are expected to be priced
- 26:15in the mid twenty thousand range. Will Nicholas, head of
- 26:19Business Development and Government Affairs, a Slate Auto said during
- 26:23the March twenty sixth meeting of the Kentucky Economic Development
- 26:26Finance Authority. Since announcing the vehicles launched just under a
- 26:31year ago, Nicholas said the company has received more than
- 26:34one hundred sixty thousand reservations for the vehicles from across
- 26:37the country. The vehicles are built completely stripped of everything
- 26:41that isn't an essential, so customers can decide how they'd
- 26:45like to customize with accessories and personalization, a state official
- 26:49said during the KEDFA meeting. The vehicles are so customizable
- 26:55that Nicholas said the truck can even be crafted into
- 26:58a five passenger suv. The Vinyl Wrapping facility in Louisville
- 27:02will be central to Slate Auto's customization ecosystem, official said,
- 27:08and serve as the automaker's sole national production center for
- 27:11its vinyl rap kit program. At this facility, rather than
- 27:16painting vehicles in a factory like most automakers do, Slate
- 27:20Auto will produce rap kits for its vehicles and the
- 27:23custom colors and finishes chosen by the customer. The company
- 27:28offers more than one hundred colors and finishes from which
- 27:30customers can choose. The project, out of Troy, Michigan headquartered
- 27:35company was approved by KEDFA for one million dollars in
- 27:39state tax incentives over the course of the ten year agreement. Additionally,
- 27:44state officials said Louisville Metro government is also helping to
- 27:47support the project. Slate Auto is expected to create fifty
- 27:51one jobs with an hourly wage target of thirty nine
- 27:54dollars and nine cents including benefits, and a minimum wage
- 27:58requirement of ten dollars in eighty eight cents. This concludes
