- 0:04Speaker 1: Here we go, Tuesday, September this second show fifty four
- 0:11Speaker 1: to forty three of The Morning Show with Preston Scott.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm Preston. He's ose great to be with you. And
- 0:17Speaker 1: who do we have here? Oh my goodness, it's the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Mama Bear Us Congresswoman Cat Camick. Cat. Congratulations, by golly.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Oh, thank you for literally sitting here our little family
- 0:32Speaker 2: of three. And baby Aggie is eating her second breakfast
- 0:38Speaker 2: as we speak.
- 0:39Speaker 1: So are we going with Augie? Is that the name
- 0:42Speaker 1: around the house? Aggie?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well, officially she is Augusta.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Dare I know that?
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yes? I call her Augie. Matt is fond of Gussasaurus,
- 0:55Speaker 2: you know, as any good child of the nineties. We
- 0:59Speaker 2: all love dress the Park, and so he's he's hoping that,
- 1:02Speaker 2: you know, he's going to be able to get her
- 1:04Speaker 2: into dinosaurs. And I already told him, I'm imagining me
- 1:08Speaker 2: coming home at one point and they'll be in Dinoh
- 1:10Speaker 2: outfits running around the house. So you've got Aggie, we've
- 1:14Speaker 2: got Gusta Augusta, We've got Gustasaurus. We've got still baby Peanut.
- 1:20Speaker 2: It's anyone, it's Anyone's guests.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Could anything have really prepared you for this blessing.
- 1:28Speaker 2: No, no, I mean at one, I still think it's
- 1:31Speaker 2: crazy that you know, you you walk out of you
- 1:35Speaker 2: deliver your child, and then they're like here you go,
- 1:37Speaker 2: and it's like there's no manual for this, right, It's
- 1:40Speaker 2: like we'd out and we like to think that we're
- 1:44Speaker 2: very competent human beings and adults, but nothing prepares you
- 1:49Speaker 2: like becoming a parent. There there is no preparation. It's
- 1:52Speaker 2: just so overwhelming in terms of you know, you feel
- 1:55Speaker 2: so blessed and lucky and you're in awe of this
- 1:58Speaker 2: amazing little child, and it is it's the best thing ever.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I can't believe that I waited so long to do this.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I almost feel guilty talking about anything else because your
- 2:14Speaker 1: mom now and you've got your little girl with you,
- 2:16Speaker 1: and it's and it's like, I don't want to ruin
- 2:19Speaker 1: it by talking about other things. So I'm going to
- 2:22Speaker 1: delay just a couple more minutes because we shared the
- 2:25Speaker 1: news of little Augusta's birth with the audience, and I
- 2:29Speaker 1: think it's safe to say, based on the email I received,
- 2:32Speaker 1: people just overjoyed for you and Matt and know the
- 2:35Speaker 1: blessing that children bring to lives in just enriching the
- 2:40Speaker 1: life of a mom and a dad, and she's got
- 2:42Speaker 1: two great parents. I know that, and I would imagine
- 2:46Speaker 1: the staff sort of kind of is going to be
- 2:49Speaker 1: fighting over her.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yes, we've already seen where people are, you know, nicknaming her,
- 2:56Speaker 2: and she's going to be kind of the mascot for
- 2:59Speaker 2: the team for sure. She's just an incredible little little human.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I mean, she's I know, I say perfect, and I'm
- 3:08Speaker 2: exceptionally biased. Of course, every parent is for their kid,
- 3:11Speaker 2: but she's just amazing. And it is so true what
- 3:15Speaker 2: they say that you don't know what real love is
- 3:17Speaker 2: until you have a child. And Matt and I just
- 3:20Speaker 2: feel so incredibly lucky. I mean, it was no doubt
- 3:23Speaker 2: a brutal labor and delivery. We spent six days in
- 3:28Speaker 2: the hospital, but you know, we are so so lucky
- 3:32Speaker 2: to have a healthy, happy little girl. And I just
- 3:38Speaker 2: know that she's gonna do incredible things and we're just
- 3:41Speaker 2: gonna love her and do the very best that we can,
- 3:44Speaker 2: as all parents do. And it just puts everything into
- 3:47Speaker 2: a different light and perspective and certainly makes me want
- 3:50Speaker 2: to fight harder for our country and for her future.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And I do think being a parent makes you better
- 3:55Speaker 2: at your job? I really do. I'm already I mean,
- 3:58Speaker 2: we've been up since five and we've already done you know,
- 4:02Speaker 2: TV hits, and we've already started talking to the team,
- 4:05Speaker 2: and that's like, of course, you're even more busy now
- 4:08Speaker 2: than you were before. But it just it means so
- 4:11Speaker 2: much more when you have your child's future kind of
- 4:14Speaker 2: in your hands and you want to do right by them.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So we're very excited, so blessed, and we can't thank
- 4:20Speaker 2: people enough for the incredible outpouring of well wishes. We
- 4:24Speaker 2: really do have the best community in Florida, and we
- 4:29Speaker 2: just can't say thank you enough, truly.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Kat have you been You haven't been back to Washington
- 4:34Speaker 1: since your child's been born.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Right, correct? We just got back yesterday.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I'm going to guess that at some point that's going
- 4:43Speaker 1: to happen. Do you have any expectations of whether you'll
- 4:47Speaker 1: be treated any differently because you're now a mom?
- 4:53Speaker 3: You know?
- 4:54Speaker 2: So I'm not sure how you know it's going to go.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I'm only the fourteenth woman ever to have a baby
- 5:02Speaker 2: while serving in Congress, and if you think about it,
- 5:05Speaker 2: there's been twelve thousand people that have served our nation
- 5:09Speaker 2: in Congress only about four hundred, and I think twelve
- 5:13Speaker 2: have been women, and fourteen of them have given birth
- 5:17Speaker 2: myself now included the capital and Congress is not really
- 5:22Speaker 2: set up for working parents. You know, there's not changing
- 5:27Speaker 2: tables really in all the bathrooms for a mom like
- 5:31Speaker 2: me who's breastfeeding. You know, it's one of those situations where, Okay,
- 5:35Speaker 2: how do we make this work? And you know, we've
- 5:37Speaker 2: talked to the Speaker and the leadership team and they're like, well,
- 5:41Speaker 2: you know, you can just got to use a bathroom.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And I'm like, you know, it's funny because Congress makes
- 5:48Speaker 2: the laws, but yet we can't follow the laws that
- 5:50Speaker 2: we make because that's actually illegal, you know. And so
- 5:54Speaker 2: we're we're slowly educating our colleagues on the needs of
- 5:59Speaker 2: working parents and we're really lucky that I can bring
- 6:03Speaker 2: her to the Capital with me. And ironically, Matt, as
- 6:07Speaker 2: a firefighter, gets paternity leave, members of Congress do not.
- 6:12Speaker 2: We don't get sick time or vacation time, or paternity
- 6:15Speaker 2: leave or maternity leave. I know that that's a common misconception.
- 6:18Speaker 2: We also don't get free childcare. That's another misconception. And
- 6:23Speaker 2: so you know, we're just doing what we can to
- 6:25Speaker 2: make it work. And we think that our experience might
- 6:28Speaker 2: illuminate things for some of my colleagues and make it
- 6:31Speaker 2: better for families across the country. So we're going to
- 6:34Speaker 2: figure it out. We're going to make it work. And
- 6:38Speaker 2: I think one of the important things that I've realized
- 6:41Speaker 2: right out the gate is your time management changes. Your
- 6:45Speaker 2: priorities shift dramatically, and all of a sudden, you're not
- 6:50Speaker 2: waiting for the perfect plan, You're just executing. You're making decisions.
- 6:54Speaker 2: So I think it is actually going to make me
- 6:56Speaker 2: more decisive and a little bit more aggressive, which some
- 6:59Speaker 2: people are like, oh gosh, that's scary.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Hey god, Cat, Well, she just fired a shout over
- 7:11Speaker 1: about all of Washington, d C. That now, being a parent,
- 7:15Speaker 1: US Congressman Cat Camick is going to be the ultimate
- 7:19Speaker 1: mama bear when it comes to being a bit more
- 7:22Speaker 1: aggressive when it comes to legislation and fighting. Hard to
- 7:26Speaker 1: imagine that, horror, Cat, I think some people might view
- 7:30Speaker 1: it that way. I'm curious, though, has your time away,
- 7:34Speaker 1: as much as you can detach yourself from what goes
- 7:37Speaker 1: on in Washington and in your district, has it allowed
- 7:41Speaker 1: you to be maybe more laser focused on a given
- 7:44Speaker 1: set of issues.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, obviously your perspective is you know, always
- 7:52Speaker 2: colored by you know, your experiences, your personal experiences. And
- 7:58Speaker 2: this last month in August, not only we were we
- 8:00Speaker 2: continuing to work. I mean, I think I worked up
- 8:02Speaker 2: until about two days before I delivered baby Augie. And
- 8:08Speaker 2: you know, just hearing from people, there's a lot of
- 8:12Speaker 2: local things that we were working on, but I'm seeing
- 8:16Speaker 2: a big shift towards how do we fix this healthcare system?
- 8:21Speaker 2: Because we really don't have a healthcare system. It's more
- 8:23Speaker 2: sick care. It's completely broken, and so there's a tremendous
- 8:28Speaker 2: amount of work that we have to do there. And
- 8:30Speaker 2: you and I were North Florida and we see where
- 8:34Speaker 2: the closing of hospitals, the closing of primary care, people
- 8:37Speaker 2: going out of business. It's leaving these massive health deserts.
- 8:42Speaker 2: And that's the result of you know a lot of
- 8:44Speaker 2: different things. But you've got insurance that doesn't really ensure
- 8:48Speaker 2: anything anymore. Your premiums are going up, the quality of
- 8:52Speaker 2: care is going down. That's something that needs to be addressed.
- 8:55Speaker 2: And that goes back to really I believe the affordable
- 8:58Speaker 2: care Act. Was it perfect before the Affordable Careact Obamacare? No,
- 9:02Speaker 2: but Obamacare made it thirty thousand times worse. So we
- 9:06Speaker 2: have a lot of work in that space to do.
- 9:08Speaker 2: The other thing is, of course, government spending and waste
- 9:11Speaker 2: fraud abuse. We're garnishing the wages of our children and
- 9:15Speaker 2: our grandchildren. And I'm going to lay blame on both
- 9:18Speaker 2: the Republicans and Democrats on this front.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Yep.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Republican Democrats have bidden negligent in their duty to put
- 9:26Speaker 2: forward a budget and do the regular order of twelve
- 9:29Speaker 2: appropriation bills, which this is September. We have fourteen legislative
- 9:33Speaker 2: days to get that done. Otherwise we end up in
- 9:37Speaker 2: a Continuing Resolution a CR, which is just a rubber
- 9:39Speaker 2: stamp of Nancy Pelosi spending era programs. And that's unacceptable.
- 9:45Speaker 2: It is absolutely unacceptable. So we have to get that
- 9:48Speaker 2: under control because our children's future is on the line,
- 9:51Speaker 2: and baby Agy she deserves a fair shot at whatever
- 9:54Speaker 2: she wants her future to look like, just like every
- 9:56Speaker 2: other kid does. They don't need to have the burden
- 9:59Speaker 2: of one hundred one thousand dollars plus of debt on
- 10:02Speaker 2: their shoulders from the minute that they're born. So we
- 10:04Speaker 2: have to have some cajones and we've got to get
- 10:07Speaker 2: this wrapped up. And we need to do away with
- 10:09Speaker 2: the port that ear marks. I'm the only Republican in
- 10:12Speaker 2: the state of Florida that doesn't do ear marks, and
- 10:15Speaker 2: that's a third. Get rid of the insider trading, get
- 10:17Speaker 2: rid of all this corruption that is happening in Washington.
- 10:20Speaker 2: That's where I'm going to be focused is cleaning up Washington,
- 10:23Speaker 2: cutting the spending, and actually fixing a healthcare system that
- 10:28Speaker 2: is so broken. That's really where I'm looking at right now.
- 10:37Speaker 1: You've heard the laser focus. US Congresswoman Kat Cammick Florida's
- 10:42Speaker 1: third district, only one in Florida in the Republican Caucus
- 10:46Speaker 1: not doing ear marks. How long have I been asking
- 10:50Speaker 1: for that, those of you that are veterans of the show.
- 10:53Speaker 1: It goes back years begging congressional reps, set the examples,
- 11:00Speaker 1: stop take in the pork. She's the first one to
- 11:03Speaker 1: actually do it. Kat, I got to ask you about this.
- 11:08Speaker 1: What is President Trump thinking buying shares of Intel and
- 11:13Speaker 1: pursuing shares of a defense company or owning a defense company.
- 11:17Speaker 3: That's socialism, it is, you know, and I will admittedly
- 11:22Speaker 3: say I've struggled with the news on that because as
- 11:26Speaker 3: a constitutional conservative, that is absolutely fundamentally against everything that
- 11:32Speaker 3: I stand for.
- 11:33Speaker 2: And I believe, I respect the President. I know that
- 11:39Speaker 2: his heart is in the right place, but I think
- 11:41Speaker 2: that the administration is wrong on this one. So I
- 11:44Speaker 2: think there's going to be some unwinding that we're going
- 11:46Speaker 2: to have to do. I also think that even more broadly,
- 11:50Speaker 2: you look beyond the intel, look at what our grid
- 11:53Speaker 2: and all our telecommunications nationally have embedded in them that
- 11:57Speaker 2: we still haven't corrected. That is all Chinese owned infrastructure,
- 12:01Speaker 2: and I would rather us focus our time, attention, and
- 12:05Speaker 2: resources on rooting out all of this. I mean, I
- 12:08Speaker 2: got a report that nearly sixty percent of all of
- 12:12Speaker 2: our national security DoD equipment has CCP manufactured produced equipment
- 12:20Speaker 2: inside of it. That's the stuff that we need to
- 12:23Speaker 2: be focused on. And so I know that he's focused
- 12:26Speaker 2: heavily on the investment in the United States and getting
- 12:29Speaker 2: these companies reshored and onshore. But we have a lot
- 12:33Speaker 2: of work to do in getting the CCP out of
- 12:36Speaker 2: our basic infrastructure. It's going to take some work, and
- 12:43Speaker 2: I'm not thrilled about the decision on Intel. But we've
- 12:46Speaker 2: got a lot of moving parts here that we've got
- 12:48Speaker 2: to focus on.
- 12:49Speaker 1: I know agriculture is a big thing. This will be
- 12:51Speaker 1: the last question I have for you today because I
- 12:53Speaker 1: want to respect your time with your husband and your child.
- 12:58Speaker 1: The reconciliation package has some stuff in it. I want
- 13:02Speaker 1: to say it's section four thirty five, four thirty seven
- 13:04Speaker 1: or something dealing with some Basically, it allows complete shielding
- 13:09Speaker 1: of liability to the pesticide companies out there. It's snuck
- 13:15Speaker 1: in there. It's it's a it's a it's a nightmare
- 13:18Speaker 1: for consumers because it basically says, uh, glycasate is not
- 13:22Speaker 1: you can't you can't prosecute for that anymore, among other things.
- 13:27Speaker 1: What can you tell.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Me, Well, just like the pharmaceutical companies, no one should
- 13:32Speaker 2: have absolute immunity from a sort of liability, right. And
- 13:37Speaker 2: so that's actually something that as a member of the
- 13:39Speaker 2: ad the Committee, we've been kind of socializing what is
- 13:44Speaker 2: it going to look like when we come back in September.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Now that we're back, we're having briefings on this because
- 13:49Speaker 2: it never should have been put in the bill in
- 13:52Speaker 2: the first place. So I think long term that's going
- 13:55Speaker 2: to get rectified because again you have a general consensus
- 13:58Speaker 2: out of the conference that no company, no industry should
- 14:02Speaker 2: have blanket immunity when when people have a right and
- 14:06Speaker 2: one know what's in their products, they have a right
- 14:08Speaker 2: to choose what products they want to consume. Now, we
- 14:11Speaker 2: know that, like to say and others, have been widely
- 14:13Speaker 2: used in agriculture, but we also know that there are
- 14:17Speaker 2: concerns and their complications as a result of that. So
- 14:20Speaker 2: we need to deal with that in a smart way.
- 14:23Speaker 2: One of the things that I get frustrated with is
- 14:26Speaker 2: you have the Bill Gates of the world who are
- 14:29Speaker 2: constantly circuiting short short circuiting the system where they've got
- 14:34Speaker 2: new coatings that they're putting on products that they've basically
- 14:38Speaker 2: been able to buy an organic label on and it's
- 14:40Speaker 2: not organic. We have to have a conversation about food
- 14:43Speaker 2: safety in the country, and that's long overdue. I think
- 14:46Speaker 2: RFK is trying to have that conversation, but you have
- 14:49Speaker 2: a lot of entrenched bureaucrats that don't want to have
- 14:52Speaker 2: that conversation, and so we have to figure out a
- 14:55Speaker 2: way to get this done in a way that's smart.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And I think the ad can. The AG Committee is
- 15:00Speaker 2: going to be taking it up this month because don't forget,
- 15:04Speaker 2: we still have a farm bill that is going to
- 15:07Speaker 2: need to be passed. We're already a year over the
- 15:11Speaker 2: deadline for the Farm bill, and the farm bill is
- 15:13Speaker 2: critical to a state like Florida, where you have three
- 15:15Speaker 2: hundred specialty crops. That is insanely important. Now, the One
- 15:20Speaker 2: Big Beautiful Bill did have that provision, but it also
- 15:23Speaker 2: had some huge wins for Florida, and I think that
- 15:26Speaker 2: that's important to highlight because everyone wants to highlight the
- 15:30Speaker 2: bad and not always look at the goods. We can
- 15:32Speaker 2: go back and fix that, but I also think it's
- 15:34Speaker 2: worth mentioning that Florida made out like bandits on the
- 15:37Speaker 2: upside when it came to some of the AG provisions
- 15:40Speaker 2: in the One Big Beautiful Bill as well.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Kat, thanks for the time. You are the best. My
- 15:45Speaker 1: advice to you and Matt come courtesy of Bill Cosby.
- 15:49Speaker 1: He said, remember, only change your baby when you can
- 15:52Speaker 1: no longer pick her up. Why remove the only thing
- 15:56Speaker 1: she can accomplish at this stage of her life. Don't
- 16:02Speaker 1: take the child's self esteem.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Noted Matt. Matt is staring at me right now saying
- 16:07Speaker 2: what in the world, shaking his head. Thank you so much,
- 16:11Speaker 2: appreciate you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Thank you you as well. Kat Camick with us on
