- speaker-0: Welcome to the Biscuit Book Club. I am so excited that we are keeping this thread going. And I just wanted to give a little bit of a background. Shelly and I, Shelly Sulfridge and I started the Biscuit Book Club radio show about it was over a year ago. And then it ran for over for six months as a radio show, and then we took it over as a podcast. But then life got busy for both of us. Shelly became a grandmother, she had a book contract. I was busy with the magazine. And something that Robin Jones Gunn had said at the Vision Writers Conference was, What are you needing more of? And I wrote down right away, I need more balance. And I felt like trying to commit and overcommit to a weekly podcast was more than I actually could do. And so, and Shelly was kind of feeling the same way. Like we had such a good run and we had such a good friendship. And so we decided that we would separate. She was gonna work on her stuff. I was gonna work on mine. She decided she did not want to use the words the biscuit book club because she goes, you know, really that's kind of your your thing. You bake biscuits. And so she's even gonna rename her podcast. She's doing edits and stuff. But I decided to go ahead and tie mine in more with the intentional writer magazine. And I realized how much I really did love interviewing guests guests. interviewing writers, but I also realized how much I love doing it with somebody else. So when Corey, who has been was a guest on two of our podcasts for Shelly and I, ⁓ and then also Corey and I, when did we decide we met, Corey? We've known each other for a while, it was speaker-1: We met at the West Coast Christian Writers Conference. That was my first conference I ever went to and it I feel like it was a long, long time ago. I don't want to say ten years because then we're dating ourselves, but it was definitely a while ⁓ back. speaker-0: It was. And I told John, I said, She was such an introvert, I don't think she spoke more than ten words. Like, seriously. And he's like, What? I said, Yeah, I mean we're s we're good friends now. We're talking all the time. But at the time, you would have never seen this coming down the road. And now Corey and I both I was in California, she was in Arizona, we're both in Knoxville. So it's made it really fun for us to kind of get together and ⁓ hang out and then we are either hanging out in person or Or we are hanging out doing writing sprints, and that's something that I think is so important for Christian writers to know is that it's so important to not do that on your own, like alone. And so having that community. So when I was thinking about doing some more interviews, and and Corey said, Well, you know, I'm available. ⁓ it was like the perfect, perfect fit. So I don't know. I hope you feel it's a good fit. speaker-1: I do. I I'm actually I I was just really grateful that you would consider me as somebody that you would want to interview people with because I love our author community so much. My Instagram is all about collaborating with authors and being supportive of one another. And so it just really excites me to be able to show people how authors really are behind the scenes. Not just a normal podcast, but like basically like here's what you get when when they're not on camera. Or maybe they're taken off guard because authors are so stinking witty. I mean, we have our own sense of weird, whether you're fiction or nonfiction. And so I like this idea of exploring those pieces and doing it with you and and and bringing some of our our close friends on and having people see what that authentic relationship looks like and how we are as people, not just how we are as storytellers. speaker-0: Right. And I love the fact that you are more of a fiction writer and a script writer. And so because so you bring that to the table because I am still I'm reading fiction, but it's not something I've been immersed in. So you bring that, I bring nonfiction, and I just wanted to be very clear with people that yes, we are still doing the Biscuit Book Club because I can't imagine a different name for anything I would be involved with. And so when Shelly said, I think I'm gonna pick a different name. I was like, okay, and then I realized, well, actually, I could still be running with that with the intentional writer, highlighting books, highlighting authors. But so anyway, I think it's gonna be a great fit. And ⁓ Shelly said, please make sure people know that we didn't have some falling out, and we're ⁓ you know, sometimes you just hear of those kind of things or you just wonder, and that is not the case at all. And she just said, just make sure people know that we are still good friends. And so yes. Yes, so Shelly we'll have Shelly on as a guest. And she speaker-1: Well we need Shelley on as guest. speaker-0: Yeah. And chances are maybe she'll have us on as a guest. So but speaker-1: That'd be great. Yeah, and it's super collaborative community. I love it. speaker-0: Yeah, and sometimes and I think that that's really kind of a good point too. Sometimes you jump into something, the Lord gives you opportunities, the Lord opens doors, and you just have to kind of go for it. I mean, Shelly and I had no idea when she asked, Would you consider doing a podcast with me? That I mean, I think it was within a month we were doing a radio show. We weren't doing a podcast, we were doing the radio show, and as a result, we have thirty downloads on Spotify and Apple ⁓ ⁓ apple because of just being jumped just thrown into that fire. And I just think of sometimes writers, it's so easy to be timid and to like touch your toe in the water, but sometimes you just gotta jump. And it's in those things, even if you look back and just say, okay, maybe we can change this and this. But the fact is is that you jumped forward, you went with it, and you learned something. So I think that that was the biggest thing Shelly and I got from it, besides a great friendship. was all the things that we learned by actually just doing it. So I'm sure you feel the same for just jumping in. speaker-1: do and I will say that this is kind of a you know, God is like just in this because my mom had come in just a couple days ago and she was like, you know, my Bible study, we we all prayed for you that God would show you different directions that He wants you to go for your career and for writing and and your creative, you know, pieces that you want. And so to have this opportunity come up and then to have some of the things fall into place, it was almost as if it was like an answer to her prayer to some degree. So I'm kind of excited. Like I'm nervous, but excited because I think that's the best place where God has us is when He does some of the craziest things, is when we're both equally nervous and excited. Because that means he's still in control of the final destination and we're just along for the ride. So I'm excited to find out what this journey looks like with you guys and ⁓ the guests that we're gonna have on and just being able to just have have a good time. speaker-0: And I think Shelly brought Southern Charm to the table. Full, full banquet of Southern Charm. But I do have to say I like our taglines as serving up stories and speaker-1: Shenanically. speaker-0: Yeah, so ⁓ we are already thinking about some fun ways that we can do some in person ⁓ interviews and just capture some of those fun things that ⁓ as authors you just it's amazing that you they go through your mind. speaker-1: I was a little nervous when you started this off with like, I I would like to have balance in my life. And I'm like, that's probably not me. I'm I'm like, hey, that looks straight. Let's make it crooked. So yeah, so I was like, hmm, balance. All right, we'll see how that works out. speaker-0: Well, I think having it be so that ⁓ it's like juggling, you know, you just sometimes you just need to slow the roll a little bit and make sure that everything that you have time for everything. And I think having a once a month podcast, that's fine, but it's not like we're jumping into a radio program. The other thing too that was hard was for Shelly, she she is four hours behind me. So when we would get up to do those podcasts for the radio, she would be having to get speaker-1: I don't know if I'm dedicated to get up for anything at four in the morning. All right. Sounds good. speaker-0: So let's get on with the show, shall we? ⁓
