- 2:04Speaker 1: air date July of nineteen fifty one and the title
- 2:09Speaker 1: is the Death of a Cowboy.
- 2:35Speaker 2: The Adventures of the Saint, starring Tom Conway. The Saint,
- 2:50Speaker 2: based on characters created by Leslie Charterists and known to

- 2:58Speaker 2: of Modern Crime now comes transcribed to radio, starring Hollywood's

- 3:11Speaker 3: Coming. Oh yes, ain't you gonna ask me in partney?
- 3:18Speaker 3: Hello cowboy, if you've lost your horse? I mean I
- 3:20Speaker 3: gotta talk to you. I gotta all right to come
- 3:23Speaker 3: in partner? What can I do for you? You templar
- 3:29Speaker 3: the man they call the Saint. That's what's engraved on
- 3:32Speaker 3: my halo. Well, I'm McGowan, they call me text. Well
- 3:37Speaker 3: it fits. Born and raised in Texas and aiming to
- 3:40Speaker 3: die there. Somebody's topping you. Somebody don't care where it happens,
- 3:44Speaker 3: just so long as it's now here. Look at this hat.
- 3:48Speaker 3: A funny place for air holes. Not so funny when
- 3:51Speaker 3: they're bullet holes though. Run out of Rustler's to shoot hands.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I was bushwhacked, partner. I was stepping out of a
- 3:57Speaker 3: taxi in some side wine and bushwhack and pool cat
- 4:00Speaker 3: took a shot at me. Well, we'll head him off
- 4:02Speaker 3: at Eagle Pass. Go on. I came to New York
- 4:07Speaker 3: to have fun, not to be killed. That's logical. You reckon,
- 4:11Speaker 3: you can ride shotgun on me. You've got me confused
- 4:14Speaker 3: with the police department. I understand they've a special bureau
- 4:16Speaker 3: that does nothing but protect visiting car. I don't want
- 4:19Speaker 3: the police department. I'll be I'm not in business. Look,
- 4:24Speaker 3: money's money and you're human. So you've noticed that, have you?
- 4:28Speaker 3: And I ain't exactly a poor man. Raising beef's a
- 4:31Speaker 3: big money business these days. Yes, so is buying it.
- 4:34Speaker 3: What do you fellas fatten those cars on? That makes
- 4:37Speaker 3: a stake so expensive?
- 4:38Speaker 4: Broccoli ha. You don't want the money, it's only money.
- 4:44Speaker 3: How about a cow. That's an interesting thought. But the
- 4:47Speaker 3: management of this apartment house is so stuffy. The only
- 4:50Speaker 3: life stock permitted his dogs and cats. I don't mean
- 4:53Speaker 3: a cow on the hoof, one for the broiler. I
- 4:57Speaker 3: beg your pardon when I get home. I'll personally here
- 5:00Speaker 3: mail you once a week. The best durned stake this
- 5:03Speaker 3: side of Fort Worth. You interest me, well, I'm borught,
- 5:07Speaker 3: go ahead and brand me good. Made me feel better,
- 5:13Speaker 3: You made me feel hungry.
- 5:14Speaker 4: You see that I.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Don't get killed, partner. That's all you're supposed to do.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I always like to do a little more than I'm
- 5:21Speaker 3: supposed to. I'll see that neither of us gets killed. Now,
- 5:24Speaker 3: what's all the shooting for. In a couple of days,
- 5:27Speaker 3: I'm going to Chicago to have a talk with a fella.
- 5:30Speaker 3: The fella knows I'm coming, and he ain't hankering them
- 5:33Speaker 3: to see me. Oh so he sends someone to hit
- 5:35Speaker 3: you off with a gun him. Why, that's just a
- 5:39Speaker 3: little business matter, you see. He Ah, But come on, Pardner,
- 5:43Speaker 3: tell you all about it somewhere else. This is New
- 5:46Speaker 3: York City. Let's go live it up some and we
- 5:48Speaker 3: can talk during it.
- 5:49Speaker 4: And what if you got in mind heard about.
- 5:52Speaker 3: A saloon where a dozen pretty girls come out and dance.
- 5:54Speaker 3: The can can I'm fixing the cut one up from
- 5:58Speaker 3: the herd.
- 5:59Speaker 5: You, hey, what's the matter?
- 6:19Speaker 4: Pardner?
- 6:20Speaker 3: All out of bubble water?
- 6:21Speaker 4: No, but that little talk for a gun waiter. Where's
- 6:24Speaker 4: that other case of champagne? I ordered? You haven't told
- 6:28Speaker 4: me what he did?
- 6:29Speaker 3: Who's that Simon?
- 6:30Speaker 4: The fillain chy? Conquer all him?
- 6:33Speaker 3: Avarman's only been short weight me on my beef, that's all.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Know what I mean? Yes, my butcher invented it. A
- 6:38Speaker 3: thousand headed.
- 6:40Speaker 5: That's it.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Boys, Fill up them glasses.
- 6:42Speaker 4: We're gonna liver up tonight.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Where are we now, mister Templar, Greenwich Village.

- 7:02Speaker 3: You know I got a sudden hanking to see that
- 7:06Speaker 3: old horse, am Ie. Uh huh uh, Please text don't
- 7:10Speaker 3: cry now when you get to Chicago. It's an old
- 7:13Speaker 3: cow pony. But I wouldn't swap him for all the
- 7:16Speaker 3: horses in Kentucky. Yes, I've got that way about a
- 7:19Speaker 3: girl once. Now about the man in Chicago.
- 7:22Speaker 4: That crinching pool cat.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Oh, so you do remember he under weighed a thousand
- 7:28Speaker 3: ahead of my steers on a rigged up scale. Cost
- 7:31Speaker 3: me twenty maybe thirty pounds a head. That's a lot
- 7:35Speaker 3: of tea bones. Who is this fellow? All easy? Just
- 7:41Speaker 3: now decided something? What next time I come to New
- 7:44Speaker 3: York City, I'm bringing that old horse with me. Got
- 7:48Speaker 3: a feeling he'd kind of like all this. Well we know, partner,
- 8:02Speaker 3: fifty second Street, No Greenwich Village.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Who'd you say? The man in Chicago?
- 8:06Speaker 3: Why the gritter who's been shoving all my cattle of
- 8:10Speaker 3: the Chicago market the last ten years or so?
- 8:15Speaker 4: Yeah, who proses?
- 8:17Speaker 3: No telling how many pounds of beef he bamboozled me
- 8:21Speaker 3: out of and all that time?
- 8:22Speaker 4: So you are going to blow the whistle on him?
- 8:24Speaker 4: Huh huh? Meaning what kill the police?
- 8:28Speaker 3: Nope, I ain't even telling you, Partner. I want this
- 8:33Speaker 3: critter all myself. Texas style?

- 22:18Speaker 3: Okay, this is the end of the line. Wait for me.
- 22:21Speaker 7: It ain't gonna be long is it? I shift ins
- 22:24Speaker 7: and a half an hour. I've been pushing this hack
- 22:25Speaker 7: all night.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I'll be back in a few minutes. Don't worry about it. Awesome,
- 22:41Speaker 3: Miss Jervis wows all right? So I'm not a rogue.
- 22:47Speaker 6: No, you can't come here.
- 22:49Speaker 4: Sure I can't see I'm in. This is outrageous, not nearly.
- 22:53Speaker 3: As outrageous as putting a finger on a fellow so
- 22:56Speaker 3: that a rifleman knows who to shoot down.
- 22:57Speaker 6: I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Sure you have, baby, Sure you have? That bullet was
- 23:03Speaker 3: for me, wasn't it. Lieutenant Barton just happened to stroll
- 23:06Speaker 3: into it?
- 23:06Speaker 10: Diamond darling? Why should Why should I want to have
- 23:10Speaker 10: you killed? I don't know you that well, but.
- 23:13Speaker 3: You know me well enough to know that I'm the
- 23:15Speaker 3: only eyewitness to a murder and that I should be eliminated,
- 23:19Speaker 3: don't you?
- 23:19Speaker 6: But I what reason would I have if.
- 23:22Speaker 3: I should fail to identify certain Nick Nimoshenko as the
- 23:25Speaker 3: gunman who shot down text McCarn Then the possibility of
- 23:29Speaker 3: mister Nimoshenko's telling who hired him to do the job
- 23:32Speaker 3: is very slightly.
- 23:32Speaker 8: I still have no idea what you're talking about.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Then suppose we go down to police headquarters and I'll
- 23:37Speaker 3: tell you all.
- 23:37Speaker 6: About Well, it's about time.
- 23:41Speaker 10: How long was I supposed to keep him talking before
- 23:43Speaker 10: you were ready to swing that club?
- 23:44Speaker 13: Oh?
- 23:45Speaker 9: I thought i'd let him feel he was live him
- 23:47Speaker 9: for a while, you know. And I told Hsuka he
- 23:50Speaker 9: had not come to Chicago.
- 23:51Speaker 14: Oh, I told him, Oh.
- 24:05Speaker 3: George, I'm getting to wake up. Is he splendid? There's
- 24:11Speaker 3: some questions I must ask him.
- 24:12Speaker 9: He's beginning to flutter his eyes.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Boss? What?
- 24:16Speaker 3: Oh yes, sir? What are you three staring at him?
- 24:21Speaker 3: Haven't you ever seen a man with two heads before?
- 24:23Speaker 3: Dealing better?
- 24:24Speaker 4: Mister Templar? Not as good as when I was unconscious.
- 24:27Speaker 9: It can be a range. Making you unconscious is how
- 24:31Speaker 9: I earned my pay.
- 24:33Speaker 3: You had a better future when you were swinging through
- 24:36Speaker 3: the trees. At least you were your own boss.
- 24:39Speaker 9: I mean you calling me an ape the furf hits
- 24:42Speaker 9: wear it all right, wise guy?
- 24:43Speaker 15: Now, Stanley, Stanley, throw him a banana?
- 24:47Speaker 4: Why Stanley.
- 24:51Speaker 8: Better not irritating diamond Darling. He's hot headed.
- 24:56Speaker 3: As soon he'll be sitting in a chair. That's going
- 24:58Speaker 3: to make him hot all over and so will you, Linda.
- 25:02Speaker 8: And last night on the train you said such sweet
- 25:05Speaker 8: things to me.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Remember I remember. Next time I go anywhere, I'll write
- 25:11Speaker 3: Afraight you need a better class of tramps.
- 25:13Speaker 6: Georgie's grouchy, aren't you? Simon?
- 25:16Speaker 16: Darling barb pestering him? Linda, let's get on to this. Yes,
- 25:20Speaker 16: let's text mc gown as a talkative man?
- 25:23Speaker 4: Was he not?
- 25:24Speaker 16: You tell me it's hardly likely that you'd agree to
- 25:27Speaker 16: interest yourself in this affair.
- 25:28Speaker 15: Without knowing all the facts, facts concerning me?
- 25:32Speaker 4: Er, Who are you?
- 25:35Speaker 3: What you do besides the train apes?
- 25:37Speaker 15: George jaggedly? I'm a cattle broker.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Oh, I'll bet you haven't been called honest weight haggetty
- 25:43Speaker 3: much lately. Ah, sir, he did tell you what you
- 25:47Speaker 3: do to a scale? Could out moode reducing diets?
- 25:50Speaker 15: What else did mc gowan tell you you had it?
- 25:53Speaker 3: No springs? Stanley? Okay, both, the pleasure is mine?
- 25:58Speaker 16: All right, all right, let's keep him conscious for a while,
- 26:02Speaker 16: sall we you needn't bother, mister Temple.
- 26:06Speaker 3: I trust you don't think all this is just idle
- 26:08Speaker 3: curiosity on my part. Oh, don't apologize.
- 26:12Speaker 16: I want to know how much McGowan told you, so
- 26:14Speaker 16: that i'll know how much you might have told the police.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Thanks for the blueprint.
- 26:18Speaker 16: What I mean is, if certain facts are known to
- 26:21Speaker 16: the police, then it might be well, it's quite possible
- 26:24Speaker 16: that is that they'll be able to.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Stop stamping yourself. You want to know if the police
- 26:30Speaker 3: have anything that establishes you as nimushensk sponsor.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Well have they?
- 26:35Speaker 3: Next time you see old Boba, get the top of
- 26:37Speaker 3: your head shaved. The ones up at Sing Sing are
- 26:40Speaker 3: so messy.
- 26:40Speaker 4: You're lying. They don't know.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Okay, I'm lying. Sweat it out, killer, sweat it out?
- 26:46Speaker 3: You mean beat it out, don't you? Stanley?
- 26:50Speaker 4: I'm right, went over lightly again.
- 26:53Speaker 16: Not too lightly, but don't kill him until later. Oh well,
- 27:12Speaker 16: Temple going to talk to me?
- 27:14Speaker 3: Now?
- 27:14Speaker 6: What's the use, George.
- 27:15Speaker 8: You'll never tell the truth. I know I had a
- 27:19Speaker 8: date with him.
- 27:20Speaker 3: You're boasting.
- 27:21Speaker 8: It is just a waste of time. Let's Stanley, get.
- 27:23Speaker 3: It over with.
- 27:24Speaker 4: That's what I say. Boys.
- 27:25Speaker 9: If the cops knew anything about it, I say, they've
- 27:27Speaker 9: been here a long time ago.
- 27:28Speaker 15: Yes, I suppose you're right, all right, Stanley.
- 27:32Speaker 4: How do you want it done?
- 27:33Speaker 3: Oh?
- 27:33Speaker 15: Anyway, I don't care.
- 27:34Speaker 6: Well I do.
- 27:35Speaker 3: That's what attracted me to you from the start. And
- 27:38Speaker 3: you look like a neat house.
- 27:39Speaker 15: Keep up, all right, take him out of here and
- 27:42Speaker 15: throw him into Lake Michigan.
- 27:44Speaker 4: But I didn't bring my bathing.
- 27:46Speaker 8: Suit least idea. Shall I answer it?
- 27:50Speaker 3: You have to Domin knows you're in very well.
- 27:53Speaker 15: Whoever it is, get rid of him at the past.
- 27:57Speaker 14: Yes, let.
- 28:00Speaker 4: A guy, and I've got a penny's ears back.
- 28:02Speaker 7: That's what I'm gonna do.
- 28:03Speaker 6: Look here, you can't burst into here.
- 28:06Speaker 4: You'd be surprised at what I can do. And I'm sorry,
- 28:08Speaker 4: and believe me, I'm oh so there you hello, Captain Carson.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Given me no lip?
- 28:16Speaker 7: Brother, I told you I was off, dude in a
- 28:18Speaker 7: half an hour, and.
- 28:18Speaker 4: You said that you Hey, how'd you get your facehold?
- 28:21Speaker 14: Bang?
- 28:21Speaker 3: All it's all in the day's work. What's going on here?
- 28:24Speaker 3: You've got your men stationed at all possible exits, Captain, Well,
- 28:29Speaker 3: haven't you?
- 28:29Speaker 4: Captain?
- 28:32Speaker 3: You'll do this around the whole building. Fine, captain, and
- 28:35Speaker 3: here are your three murders, just as I promised. Now
- 28:38Speaker 3: we wait a minute. This doesn't look like any cop
- 28:41Speaker 3: I've ever seen. Don't let him reach for that gun.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Go get me there? Done?
- 28:48Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 28:50Speaker 4: Hit him, not me. I ain't gonna hit no cops
- 28:52Speaker 4: spoken like a gentleman of the old school, not when
- 28:55Speaker 4: they got all the exits covered. Especially I'm giving up.
- 28:58Speaker 3: That's using your head standing.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Yeah, captain, here's my gun. I'm ready to compare.
- 29:03Speaker 3: I don't want chuck gun. I just want to take it,
- 29:05Speaker 3: you fool, take it, oh trail. Now do I get
- 29:09Speaker 3: my fair?
- 29:10Speaker 4: Yes?
- 29:10Speaker 3: You get your fare, my friend, And you know what
- 29:13Speaker 3: I'm going to give you for a tip? What's that
- 29:15Speaker 3: a new cab? But first get on the phone until
- 29:18Speaker 3: the police to come over. Will you tell them there
- 29:20Speaker 3: are some people here I'd like him to meet.

- 32:19Speaker 13: OTR Westerns dot com slash Live. You're listening to the
- 32:24Speaker 13: great detectives of Old time Radio with Adam Graham. And
- 32:27Speaker 13: now let's get back into the show.
- 32:34Speaker 4: Welcome back.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Well, my post show commentary is gonna be a little
- 32:37Speaker 1: bit shorter than antssipated because I thought John Dayner played
- 32:42Speaker 1: the role of the cowboy, and I was all ready
- 32:45Speaker 1: to discuss all the ins and outs of John Dayner
- 32:49Speaker 1: as cowboys, but according to the closing credits, that wasn't
- 32:53Speaker 1: the case. So never mind. I do think it was
- 32:56Speaker 1: a nice twist at the end. And you know, it
- 33:01Speaker 1: is something that cavies on detective shows are shown to
- 33:07Speaker 1: be among the greatest allies that you can have in
- 33:11Speaker 1: the war against crime. All right, Well, now, time for
- 33:16Speaker 1: some listener comments and feedback and Lawrence comments. Tom Conway
- 33:23Speaker 1: has always been my favorite actor. I particularly like when
- 33:27Speaker 1: he played a detective, which he did a lot on
- 33:30Speaker 1: radio Sherlock Holmes and The Saint on television as Mark Saber,
- 33:35Speaker 1: or in the movies as The Falcon, which all of
- 33:38Speaker 1: his Simon Templar radio adventures were around to listen to
- 33:44Speaker 1: and in date. It's true that he has a lot
- 33:46Speaker 1: of lost episodes. If there's any good news for fans
- 33:50Speaker 1: of Tom Conway, it's that all of these missing episodes
- 33:55Speaker 1: were from nineteen fifty one, where NBC was transcribed so
- 34:00Speaker 1: many episodes, so the odds that there are some more
- 34:03Speaker 1: out there are probably better than for your average show.
- 34:08Speaker 1: And I think that the of all the sane episodes missing,
- 34:13Speaker 1: those that NBC transcribed and we're putting out are probably
- 34:18Speaker 1: the ones most likely to be found. And given that
- 34:21Speaker 1: most of Vincent Price NBC episodes are already in existence,
- 34:27Speaker 1: I wouldn't be surprised if some Tom Conway episodes showed up. Though, actually,
- 34:33Speaker 1: in following Old Time Radio very regularly for the past
- 34:38Speaker 1: six or seven years, the only new episode of The
- 34:41Speaker 1: Saint to show up was the miracle tea party pilot
- 34:46Speaker 1: from the World War two era, which is something I
- 34:49Speaker 1: never would have guessed in a million years would have
- 34:52Speaker 1: come into circulation. So you never know, but we will
- 34:56Speaker 1: all keep a eye and ear out for any more
- 35:00Speaker 1: Tom Conway scene episodes, and we still do have a
- 35:02Speaker 1: couple more to get to yet. Other comments on Tom Conway,
- 35:08Speaker 1: and this one from Paul who seconds the comments from
- 35:13Speaker 1: Lawrence and ads agreed, great voice and diction. Well, thanks
- 35:19Speaker 1: so much for the comments. Appreciate hearing from some Tom
- 35:23Speaker 1: Conway fans and definitely a very talented actor and we will,
- 35:32Speaker 1: as I said, hear more from him in the next
- 35:34Speaker 1: couple of weeks. All right, Well, that will do it
- 35:37Speaker 1: for today. Remember our listener support campaign continues and you
- 35:41Speaker 1: can support the campaign on a one time do nition
- 35:46Speaker 1: basis at support dot Great Detectives dot net. And among
- 35:50Speaker 1: the thank you items we do have available with a
- 35:53Speaker 1: donation of twenty dollars or more, we'll send you the
- 35:57Speaker 1: Innocence of Father Brown volume one or volume two through
- 36:02Speaker 1: audible dot com, and also at the one hundred dollars
- 36:08Speaker 1: or more level, we'll send you the George Sanders Saint Films,
- 36:13Speaker 1: a collection from the Warner Archive. And of course, as
- 36:16Speaker 1: I mentioned before, George Sanders is mister Conway's brother and
- 36:21Speaker 1: considered by many to be the definitive Saint. And that
- 36:24Speaker 1: is with a donation of one hundred dollars or more
- 36:26Speaker 1: to us and Canadian listeners. A full list of available
- 36:31Speaker 1: items is at support dot Great Detectives dot net. All right, well,
- 36:36Speaker 1: that will do it for today. Join us back here
- 36:38Speaker 1: tomorrow for the adventures of Ellery Queen, and then next
- 36:42Speaker 1: Monday another adventure with Tom Conway as the Saint from Boise, Idaho.
- 36:49Speaker 1: This is your host, Adam Grahamson and off
