- 0:00The worst quarter for U .S. Treasuries since
- 0:011994 just ended. And today, markets are holding
- 0:05their breath waiting for the job numbers that
- 0:07will tell the Fed whether it needs to keep tightening
- 0:10or finally take its foot off the brake. This
- 0:13is Ground Signal. I'm Tenet. It's Friday, October
- 0:152nd, 2026. Here's what moved, what it means,
- 0:19and what you need to watch next. Ground State.
- 0:23Let's set the scene. Q3 2026 is officially in
- 0:27the books, and the bond market just posted a
- 0:29brutal quarter. According to Reuters, U .S. Treasuries
- 0:33logged their worst three -month performance since
- 0:351994 with the benchmark 10 -year yield rising
- 0:3987 basis points through September. That's a generational
- 0:43pay sell -off. The 10 -year touched 5 .34 % intraday
- 0:47earlier this week, its highest level since 2002.
- 0:51As of this morning's trading, it's sitting at
- 0:53roughly 5 .29%. The consequence of that bond
- 0:57move ripples through everything. Higher risk
- 1:00-free yields mean every other asset gets repriced.
- 1:04Equities under pressure. Dollar surging. Crypto
- 1:07wobbling but holding. And gold telling an interesting
- 1:11story we'll get to shortly. Layered on top of
- 1:14that is today's September jobs report released
- 1:16this morning at 8 .30 Eastern. The August print
- 1:19came in at 162 ,000 nonfarm payrolls and a 4
- 1:23.1 % unemployment rate. Today's number is what
- 1:26markets have been trading around all week. By
- 1:29the time you're listening, that number has dropped.
- 1:32We'll walk through what it means for the Fed's
- 1:34posture heading into October 27th. Signal level
- 1:37for the bond sell -off and rate environment.
- 1:39Signal 4. This is an immediate market moving
- 1:42condition with direct consequences for risk assets,
- 1:45borrowing costs, and currency positioning globally.
- 1:48equities. The S &P 500 was up around 0 .2 % on
- 1:52the day as of morning trading, sitting near 7
- 1:55,666. That's a modest recovery after a rough
- 1:59week driven by the bond market turbulence. According
- 2:01to AP News, global shares were mixed heading
- 2:04into today's session. The Nikkei 225 fell roughly
- 2:080 .9 % to 68 ,309 in Tokyo trading. the Hang
- 2:13Seng dropped sharply, down about 2 .6 % to around
- 2:1623 ,924. European shares, according to Reuters,
- 2:21edged slightly higher on the day, but the big
- 2:23story in Europe is financials. Banking stocks
- 2:26are on track for their worst weekly performance
- 2:28since April because higher rates are compressing
- 2:31valuations and raising concerns about credit
- 2:34quality in a higher -for -longer environment.
- 2:36On the sector rotation front, according to Dorsey
- 2:39Wright's research from October 1st, market leadership
- 2:42is shifting. Technology, which drove the first
- 2:45two -thirds of 2026, is losing momentum. Healthcare,
- 2:49financials, and industrials are picking up the
- 2:52rotation. This is a textbook late -cycle move
- 2:55when rates are elevated and growth expectations
- 2:57are being revised lower. And here's the forward
- 3:01-looking piece worth tracking. Q3 earnings season
- 3:03kicks off in earnest next week. According to
- 3:06Zacks, S &P 500 earnings are projected to grow
- 3:09roughly 24 % year over year. Big bank reports
- 3:12from JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo both drop
- 3:15on October 13th. Those two prints will set the
- 3:18tone for whether financials can sustain their
- 3:20sector leadership bid or whether rising credit
- 3:22losses and margin compression take the narrative
- 3:25in a darker direction. Signal level for equities
- 3:27and earnings setup. Signal three, material and
- 3:31developing. Fixed income and rates. The 10 -year
- 3:36treasury at 5 .29 % represents a level the market
- 3:39hasn't seen since 2002. What drove this isn't
- 3:42just the Fed. According to a detailed breakdown
- 3:45from Digico, inflation expectations account for
- 3:48roughly 12 of the 87 basis points of Q3's yield
- 3:51move. That means the bond sell -off isn't purely
- 3:54a Fed is hiking story. It's also a story about
- 3:57the market losing confidence in the inflation
- 3:59anchor. The Fed's next decision is October 27th
- 4:03through 28th. As of September 25th, according
- 4:06to reporting on CME FedWatch futures positioning,
- 4:08the market was pricing roughly a 66 % probability
- 4:11of another 25, basis point hike at that meeting.
- 4:15A strong September jobs report, particularly
- 4:18if it comes in well above the August 162 ,000
- 4:21figure, makes that hike essentially certain.
- 4:23A softer number reopens the whole debate. The
- 4:27ECB held rates unchanged at its September 10th
- 4:30meeting. Its next decision lands October 28th
- 4:33through 29th, one day after the Fed. Two major
- 4:37central bank decisions in the same week, with
- 4:39a bond market already under stress, means October
- 4:4228th is circled in red. Signal level for fixed
- 4:45income and rates. Signal 4. Currencies and FX.
- 4:50The dollar is on a tear. According to Reuters,
- 4:53the DXY index hit a 17 -month high this week,
- 4:56heading for its third straight weekly gain. It's
- 5:00trading around 102 as of this morning's session.
- 5:03The driver is straightforward. Higher U .S. yields
- 5:06attract capital inflows into dollar -denominated
- 5:08assets. That's a structural bid for the dollar
- 5:11as long as the rate differential persists. For
- 5:15the Nomad audience, here's what that means in
- 5:17practice as of this morning's rates. USD slash
- 5:20PEN, the dollar against the Peruvian sol, is
- 5:23at 3 .45. USD slash PHP against the Philippine
- 5:27peso is at 62 .87. USD slash IDR against the
- 5:32Indonesian rupiah is at 17 ,902. USD slash THB
- 5:37against the Thai baht is at 33 .64. USD slash
- 5:41MYR against the Malaysian ringet is at 4 .08.
- 5:44USD slash BRL against the Brazilian real is around
- 5:485 .19. That BRL print is worth flagging. Brazil's
- 5:53real has been under pressure for much of the
- 5:55quarter. A weaker real raises local costs for
- 5:57anyone operating out of a dollar or euro base,
- 6:00and it compresses the value of any local income
- 6:02or revenue streams. For the Southeast Asia cluster,
- 6:06the IDR at 17 ,902 is near the weaker end of
- 6:10its recent range, worth watching if you have
- 6:12PHP or IDR exposure. In Europe, Reuters reported
- 6:16the euro took particular pressure from the bond
- 6:18route and dollar strength. The combination of
- 6:21dollar bid and ECB holding rates while the Fed
- 6:23potentially hikes again is a structural headwind
- 6:25for EUR slash USD. Signal level for FX? Signal
- 6:303. Crypto. Bitcoin is at $86 ,372 as of this
- 6:36morning, according to multiple market sources,
- 6:38including Coindesk. The intraday range today
- 6:41has been $83 ,439 to $86 ,794. Ethereum is at
- 6:47$2 ,748. Solana is at 121 .89. Coindesk reported
- 6:53this morning that Bitcoin edged higher heading
- 6:55into the jobs report, even as global bond yields
- 6:58surged. That's an interesting divergence worth
- 7:01unpacking. According to analysis from Fidelity,
- 7:04the 90 -day correlation between Bitcoin's daily
- 7:06returns and the 10 -year yield sits at roughly
- 7:09negative 0 .17, weekly inverse. Meaning higher
- 7:14yields create a mild headwind for Bitcoin, but
- 7:17it's not a tight relationship. What's actually
- 7:19driving crypto today is probably more about risk
- 7:22appetite and the jobs number than the yield curve
- 7:24directly. If September payrolls come in hot,
- 7:27markets will price in a higher Fed path, risk
- 7:30assets broadly get a bid from the growth signal,
- 7:32and crypto likely holds or moves higher. If payrolls
- 7:36come in soft, the rate cut thesis gets earlier,
- 7:39which is historically a tailwind for Bitcoin
- 7:41through the dollar weakening it implies. BTC
- 7:44is sitting at a technically significant level.
- 7:47The $85 ,000 to $88 ,000 range has acted as a
- 7:50consolidation zone for several weeks. Signal
- 7:52level for crypto. Signal 2. Commodities. Gold
- 7:56at $4 ,195 per ounce. This is the signal worth
- 8:01sitting with. In a rising rate environment, gold
- 8:03typically sells off because higher real yields
- 8:06increase the opportunity cost of holding a non
- 8:09-yielding asset. But gold is holding near its
- 8:11highs. Multiple sources, including Exchange Rates
- 8:14UK and Faircurve, put the range this morning
- 8:17between 4 ,195 and 4 ,202. What's gold telling
- 8:23us? A few possibilities. The bond market's worst
- 8:26quarter since 1994 has rattled confidence in
- 8:29sovereign debt as a safe haven. Some of the capital
- 8:31that would normally flow into treasuries during
- 8:33uncertainty is flowing into gold instead. There's
- 8:38also an inflation expectations component. If
- 8:41the market believes inflation will remain structurally
- 8:43elevated, which the 12 basis point contribution
- 8:46to the yield move from break -even suggests is
- 8:48possible, then gold's inflation hedge function
- 8:51becomes relevant again. Brent crude is at $101
- 8:54.10. WTI is at $92 .59. The Brent WTI spread
- 9:01has widened slightly, which typically reflects
- 9:03export logistics and global demand differentials
- 9:05rather than a fundamental shift. Oil holding
- 9:09above 100 on Brent maintains cost pressure in
- 9:11energy -intensive economies. Signal level for
- 9:14commodities. Signal 3. Mobility and opportunity
- 9:18signal. Three developments worth your attention.
- 9:21First, Thailand's destination Thailand visa,
- 9:24the DT5, remains active following its September
- 9:271st regulatory update, according to the Thai
- 9:30embassy in Los Angeles. The DT5 is designed for
- 9:34remote workers, digital nomads, and freelancers.
- 9:37It's the most accessible long -stay option Thailand
- 9:39offers for location -independent income earners.
- 9:42Worth noting that the September enforcement reports
- 9:44on the previous 60, day visa exemption revocation,
- 9:47are still filtering through. If you're planning
- 9:49Thailand as a base, the DT VI is the correct
- 9:52vehicle to pursue. Second, Malaysia's DE Rantau
- 9:56digital nomad pass. According to MDEC, as of
- 9:59September 23rd, application processing is experiencing
- 10:03delays due to technical issues on the portal.
- 10:06MDEC has advised applicants to monitor the portal
- 10:08and their email for updates. If you submitted
- 10:11an application, check your inbox. If you were
- 10:14planning to apply, expect a non -standard processing
- 10:17window right now. Third, DV -2027. The diversity
- 10:21visa entry period for applicants selected under
- 10:23DV -2027 opened October 1st and runs through
- 10:27September 30, 2027, according to the State Department.
- 10:30The DV -2028 lottery registration window has
- 10:34not yet been announced. The State Department
- 10:36says the date will be communicated separately.
- 10:38If this program is on your radar, set up a State
- 10:41Department notification watch and don't assume
- 10:43the registration window opens on last year's
- 10:45schedule. Philippines' digital Nomad visa remains
- 10:49active with no confirmed rule changes in October.
- 10:52Signal level for mobility. Signal 3 for Malaysia
- 10:55DE Rantau delays. Thailand DTV signal 2. DV 2028
- 11:01watch signal 2. Forward signal. Three developments
- 11:05to watch over the next 24 to 72 hours. First,
- 11:09and most immediate, the September jobs report.
- 11:12Released this morning, October 2nd, at 8 .30
- 11:15Eastern. A number significantly above 175 ,000
- 11:19would cement a 25 basis point Fed hike on October
- 11:2227th, push the 10, year yield higher, and likely
- 11:25strengthen the dollar further. A number below
- 11:28140 ,000 would force a genuine recalculation
- 11:31of the Fed's path and could be the near -term
- 11:33catalyst for a bond relief rally. Watch the revisions
- 11:36to prior months, too, though sometimes carry
- 11:38more signal than the headline. Signal level 4.
- 11:42Second, FOMC, October 27th and 28th. The Fed's
- 11:46rate decision is now roughly 25 days out. The
- 11:4910, year at 5 .29%, combined with a labor market
- 11:53that may or may not be cooling, means the Fed
- 11:56is navigating with less runway than it would
- 11:59like. The press conference and any shift in the
- 12:02dot plot's 2027 median, which in September sat
- 12:05at 3 .6%, the strongest pivot signal yet, will
- 12:08move markets more than the rate decision itself.
- 12:11A hold at October's meeting would be a material
- 12:13shift in market expectations. Signal level four.
- 12:17Third, Q3 bank earnings, October 13th. JPMorgan
- 12:22Chase and Wells Fargo both report on October
- 12:2513th. These are the two bellwether prints that
- 12:28will confirm or deny the sector rotation thesis
- 12:30into financials. JP Morgan's net interest income
- 12:34guidance will be especially watched. Higher rates
- 12:36should fatten margins, but credit quality and
- 12:39loan growth are the offsetting risks. If the
- 12:42banks report strong and guide up, the rotation
- 12:44into financials has fundamental backing. If credit
- 12:47provisions surprise to the upside, the trade
- 12:49reverses fast. Signal level three. That's your
- 12:53Ground Signal Markets briefing for Friday, October
- 12:552nd. Bonds at 2002. Era yields. Dollar at a 17.
- 12:59Month high. Bitcoin holding above 86 ,000 through
- 13:03the sell -off. Gold refusing to break. September
- 13:05jobs data just released. Two central bank decisions
- 13:08converging on October 28th. The next 72 hours
- 13:13will tell us whether the bond market has repriced
- 13:14enough or whether there's more to come. Stay
- 13:17positioned. Ground Signal.
