Latest / Health with Hashimoto’s - Thyroid or Immune Education for Autoimmune Thyroid Disease / 135 // Hidden Gluten Traps: From Paper Straws to Cosmetics
Transcript
- 0:00Do you stay away from gluten? Do you realize or do you notice that you feel
- 0:05better, that your Hashimoto's, your hypothyroid symptoms seem to do better when you're off of gluten?
- 0:10According to a study that Dr. Isabella Wentz did, she's a pharmacist,
- 0:16about 80% of people with Hashimoto's do feel better when they're off gluten.
- 0:21We talked about this in episode 44, where I help you figure out the diet maze.
- 0:25We also talked about it in episode 108, which is all about gluten.
- 0:29Today, I want to help you identify some hidden sources of gluten that you might not realize.
- 0:35And this episode was prompted by the paper straw executive order a while back.
- 0:43President Trump said that the government has been meddling in environmental
- 0:48stuff too much and that people should be allowed to have plastic straws if they
- 0:52wanted, which is fine. That's politics.
- 0:55But I did not realize until that time that some paper straws are made of wheat products.
- 1:02Did you know that? I did not know that.
- 1:04Now, I don't go out to eat. I have not ever encountered a paper straw.
- 1:10I don't think in my entire life because I don't go to such establishments. But maybe you do.
- 1:16And maybe you have accidentally consumed gluten when you're trying to stay away
- 1:20from it because you never thought to ask what are the ingredients of this paper straw.
- 1:25Who would think to ask that? I was just, it kind of blew my mind when I heard
- 1:30that paper straws could have gluten.
- 1:33So today's episode is going to be all about other things that also might contain gluten.
- 1:39My sister sends me screenshots of different foods or supplements or products
- 1:44that she's looking at buying and it just comes with like the short question, does this have gluten?
- 1:49And then I look it up and let her know.
- 1:52And when I was replying yesterday, I think we were talking about some ingredients.
- 1:57She's like, I just have to look for wheat, right? In the ingredients.
- 2:00And I said, well, mostly.
- 2:03But also there's barley malt and that would be in things like Rice Krispie bars,
- 2:10not all of Rice Krispie bars, but
- 2:11some Rice Krispies bars will have gluten because they have barley malt.
- 2:16And barley malt, I can't say it, barley malt is in the, like the brand name Rice Krispies.
- 2:24The generic ones, at least the generic ones from Aldi, do not contain barley
- 2:29malt. They're just puffed rice. They don't have gluten.
- 2:33But unless somebody can tell me where they bought their Rice Krispies,
- 2:36like if they say I bought generic from Aldi, like, okay, now I know it's okay.
- 2:40But if they just say these are Rice Krispie bars and they are gluten-free,
- 2:44I don't know if that person recognizes that barley malt has gluten.
- 2:51And so if they don't recognize that, they might have just looked at the package
- 2:54and said, well, there's no wheat in here.
- 2:56So obviously these Rice Krispies are fine.
- 2:59And so the Rice Krispie bars are fine because Rice Krispie bars are just Rice
- 3:04Krispies and marshmallows and butter.
- 3:06I mean, sweet, crunchy, delicious snack.
- 3:10Not good for you, not even a little bit, but delicious and contaminated with
- 3:15gluten or, you know, containing gluten if you have brand name Rice Krispies.
- 3:19And I don't know all of the other brands, but what else has gluten that you might not know about?
- 3:25First of all, three and a half minutes into the episode, welcome back to another
- 3:29episode of Health with Hashimoto's.
- 3:31This is a podcast where I help you figure out simple and sustainable ways to
- 3:36take control of your health if you have Hashimoto's, because I want you to be
- 3:40able to control the controllables.
- 3:42I want you to be able to be empowered. We're not in victim mode here.
- 3:46We're not like, woe is me. I have this autoimmune thing and there's nothing I can do.
- 3:51No, no, we're getting out of that mindset completely.
- 3:54And we are looking every single day for small things that we can do to change
- 3:58the trajectory of our health. There are always things you can do.
- 4:03And in saying that, like, I don't want to overwhelm you by telling you all of
- 4:07the things that you can do because there are a lot.
- 4:10So in this podcast, every single week, my goal is to help you find something
- 4:16that is simple and sustainable.
- 4:18And if that is right up your alley, and if you have not gone through the Holistic
- 4:22Hashimoto's course yet, it is a four-week course. It's self-paced.
- 4:26So if you have, you know, life come up and you can't do it all in four weeks, it's fine.
- 4:31You have it, you know, for as long as you're in the community.
- 4:34It's over in school.com.
- 4:36S-K-O-O-L.com is where I have that hosted now.
- 4:39And you can jump on in and you can figure out exactly what to do for you,
- 4:45for your situation, for your personality, for your family.
- 4:50Sometimes things that will work for one person might not work for somebody else
- 4:55just because of all of the family dynamics.
- 4:58Only you know what's going to work for you. So the Holistic Hashimoto's course
- 5:02is available for you so that you can figure out exactly what to do for your health.
- 5:08All right, back to sources of gluten. Now, I mentioned the paper straws and the Rice Krispies.
- 5:15What are some other ones? One that I never would have thought of was soy sauce and teriyaki sauce.
- 5:22Now, I had heard people say that it's really hard to have Chinese food if you
- 5:27have to stay away from gluten.
- 5:29But I thought that was due to noodles. And I was like, well,
- 5:32it's kind of weird because rice doesn't have gluten, but it's not necessarily the noodles.
- 5:38It's the seasonings. It's the soy sauce and the teriyaki sauce.
- 5:43Most of them contain wheat,
- 5:46And so if you are having something that is seasoned with soy sauce or teriyaki
- 5:50sauce, that includes in a marinade.
- 5:52So some meats like you think, oh, my meat is gluten free because it's meat.
- 5:58If the marinade contained soy sauce or teriyaki sauce, it has wheat in it.
- 6:04So you cannot have it if you are staying away from gluten.
- 6:07For this one, there's a super simple substitute and it is coconut aminos.
- 6:11If you've never heard of coconut aminos, it comes in a bottle similar to soy sauce.
- 6:16And it's just, to me, it tastes the same.
- 6:20I don't know, maybe you are a little bit pickier on your palate and you'll be
- 6:23able to taste a difference.
- 6:25I cannot taste the difference. It's sweet, tangy, salty.
- 6:29I use it exactly how and when and where I would use soy sauce.
- 6:34And you can get coconut aminos.
- 6:35I think we got, get ours at just the regular grocery store. I don't know if
- 6:39they have it at Aldi, but I know they have it at Walmart or wherever you get your groceries.
- 6:43Another thing that could have hidden gluten is bullion cubes and soup bases.
- 6:50Some of them have wheat as a thickener.
- 6:53Now, this is a common thing for hidden gluten. It's when they use wheat to thicken something.
- 7:01And then obviously, if the wheat is in there, then the gluten is going to get
- 7:04in there. So bullion cubes and soup bases.
- 7:07So you might think, well, this is just a broth. it's a clear broth, so it's fine, right?
- 7:12Well, usually, but not always. Always check the labels.
- 7:16This also goes for flavored coffee and tea.
- 7:19Now, it's not the coffee and tea directly. It's usually the flavorings or it's
- 7:25something added to the syrup, which would be, I guess, the flavoring.
- 7:29So your coffee and your tea might have some gluten.
- 7:33Most of it is gluten-free, but it's always best to be aware and to relabels.
- 7:39I know that Keurig, I think 99% of their flavors are gluten-free,
- 7:46but one of them specifically is not gluten-free.
- 7:50Now, this is according to an article I'm reading on verywellhealth.com,
- 7:54and it's all about gluten and coffee and tea.
- 7:58They said that Timothy's Lemon Blueberry K-Cup Pods. It's a really long title.
- 8:04They have gluten. So Timothy's Lemon Blueberry K-Cup Pods. It must be some brand.
- 8:10Sub-brand? I don't know.
- 8:13Other coffees, other Keurig-type pods are fine, though some of them have malt.
- 8:22Now, malt is another key word that you want to look for.
- 8:26Like I said, in the Rice Krispies, barley malt was, it's the key.
- 8:31If it has barley malt, then it has wheat.
- 8:34Some of the coffees will also have malt. Malt does contain gluten.
- 8:40Nestle Nespresso claims that all of their coffee pods are gluten-free,
- 8:44even though some of them include descriptions like malt.
- 8:50So I mean, it says it has malt, but it also says it's gluten-free.
- 8:54So depending on how sensitive you are, it should be fine, but you have to decide for yourself.
- 9:02So coffees and teas are another or could be another source of hidden gluten,
- 9:08especially, like I said, if they have malt.
- 9:11All right, another really weird one is...
- 9:13Pre-shredded cheese. Now, of course, cheese is just cheese, right?
- 9:18Well, you know, if they pre-shred it, have you ever shredded your own cheese
- 9:23and then let it sit for a little while and it all cakes together?
- 9:26It all squishes, it like re-solidifies, and it's never re-solidified in a bag
- 9:32when you buy pre-shredded cheese at the grocery store.
- 9:35Have you ever wondered why? They add something to it. They add a non-caking
- 9:40ingredient or agent so that the cheese slices or cheese shreds,
- 9:47is that what you'd call them, they don't stick together.
- 9:49Some of the anti-caking agents contain gluten.
- 9:53So again, look at the package. Now this is probably where you're going to say
- 9:58or see that it has a risk of gluten or it is processed on something that contains gluten,
- 10:06it might not specifically say it has gluten. So just be aware.
- 10:11I don't eat imitation crab, but I have heard, I have read when doing the research
- 10:16for this episode that imitation crab contains wheat often, not always, often.
- 10:24So again, you're looking at it, you're thinking, well, this is meat, this is seafood.
- 10:28Of course, there's no wheat growing in the ocean, so this is fine, right?
- 10:33Well, that's what you would want to think. But if it's imitation,
- 10:36it might have some wheat in it.
- 10:38And that goes for any meat substitutes, like veggie burgers or what else,
- 10:45tofu, whatever else you would get that is a meat substitute.
- 10:49Some of it can be contaminated with wheat or gluten, and some of it is going
- 10:55to contain the gluten because of the seasonings like the soy sauce or the teriyaki sauce.
- 11:02So again, read the labels.
- 11:05Another one that is frustrating, at least for me, is salad dressing and sauces.
- 11:11Now, I just assume when I am eating somewhere that if it is a sauce, that it has wheat in it.
- 11:18It's just the easiest way for me to figure it out. If there's a sauce,
- 11:22I automatically discount it.
- 11:23I'm like, I can't eat it because so many sauces are thickened with wheat or
- 11:28have some wheat in it as an ingredient. I would assume to thicken,
- 11:33but maybe there's another reason.
- 11:34I don't know. If you know why they put wheat in other than to thicken, let me know.
- 11:40But salad dressings, why would they have wheat? I have no idea.
- 11:44Why would salad dressings have wheat? Wheat does not add a flavor to a salad
- 11:48dressing, and yet some salad dressings have wheat. I don't know why.
- 11:52I did not go to culinary school, and when I am making my own salad dressings,
- 11:58it's like oil and vinegar and maybe some garlic salt or something.
- 12:02Mine are super simple. I don't add wheat to my salad dressings.
- 12:08I don't know why you would, but read the labels because some salad dressings
- 12:13do have weight and you don't want to work so hard to avoid gluten and you avoid,
- 12:19you know, the delicious baked bread that somebody just made and it smells so
- 12:24good and you are like sticking to what you believe is best for your body.
- 12:29You are not enjoying that baked bread and then you get glutened because you
- 12:35used salad dressing that you didn't really care about. Like that would be totally unfair.
- 12:39So if you're going to go to the work of avoiding the good things with gluten,
- 12:44you know, I consider bread really good because gluten-free bread is not really good.
- 12:50I have tried all different types.
- 12:52And also, you know, you're avoiding baked goods.
- 12:56And then you get glutened from some salad dressing? Totally unfair. Read the labels.
- 13:01All right, something else that you might be aware of. If you have ever made
- 13:07Play-Doh for your kids, you probably know that it's wheat flour.
- 13:12It's like wheat flour and salt, right? It's been a long time since I had preschoolers
- 13:16and we made it. Actually, funny story.
- 13:18My first kid was,
- 13:20and my fourth kid, it's like they had two different moms. I remember walking
- 13:25through, I don't know, the store, Target maybe?
- 13:28I don't know where we were walking. And my first son saw pre-packaged Play-Doh,
- 13:35like brand name Play-Doh.
- 13:36And he was blown away that you could just buy Play-Doh that was already made.
- 13:42That you didn't have to take an afternoon and make a big pot of Play-Doh and
- 13:47then divide it and color it yourself.
- 13:49He had no idea that it was like available, already made.
- 13:55He had no clue. He was just, whoa, what is this? And of course then he wanted
- 13:58some, but we could make it.
- 14:00My fourth son, I have only boys, so I'm like not discriminating against my girls.
- 14:05I don't have girls. My fourth son was completely the opposite.
- 14:09One time I made Play-Doh or I said I was going to, and he's like, what?
- 14:13You can make Play-Doh? He only knew that it was pre-made. He had no idea that
- 14:18you could make it from scratch.
- 14:19So I'm saying either one is right.
- 14:23Both of them are right. You have to do what works for you in your current season
- 14:27of life, which like I said, is what we address in the Holistic Hashimoto's course.
- 14:32Everything has to be tailored to what will work for you.
- 14:35When I only had one baby, then I couldn't make Play-Doh. and it was fun and
- 14:41we would do it together it was this you know.
- 14:44A bigger craft. And then he would play with it. I had got the most fun and enjoyment
- 14:48out of making it. I didn't want to play with it, but he could.
- 14:52And by the time I had four boys, I didn't have time to sit down and make a pot
- 14:56of Play-Doh. No, please just throw it in the cart and let's buy it.
- 14:59You have to do what works for you. And that goes with so many areas of your health.
- 15:06It goes for so many different root causes. It impacts everything.
- 15:11You have to do what works for you in this season of life.
- 15:15So Play-Doh is made of wheat and is, I think, cloud dough.
- 15:20I think that's what they call it. I don't think that has wheat in it.
- 15:24I think that is baking powder, maybe, but check the labels.
- 15:29There are like finger type Play-Dohs, not Play-Doh, but a dough that you can
- 15:35play with. There are some that are gluten-free.
- 15:38Just, again, read the labels, be aware, do some Googling before you go to the store to get some.
- 15:44All right, here's another big one that you're not going to see on an ingredient label.
- 15:48And if you've ever listened to the episodes where I talk about supplements,
- 15:52I have said, do not buy your supplements from Amazon.
- 15:55I am very, very consistent with that message.
- 15:58Amazon does not have quality controls for their supplements.
- 16:02If you're going to buy supplements online, buy them from Fullscript or buy them
- 16:07from a place that does have quality controls, and Amazon is not that place.
- 16:11I use Amazon. I know it's a huge company.
- 16:15It would be better to support local. I understand that. I do use Amazon.
- 16:19I use them for many different things, but not supplements.
- 16:23Do not buy your supplements from Amazon. And one reason is that some supplements,
- 16:28especially the counterfeit ones, or especially the ones that are from other
- 16:35countries where they don't have good quality control,
- 16:38they use wheat as a filler.
- 16:41So I have heard from people...
- 16:45Who have personally talked to companies like the research, not research and
- 16:48development, the quality control people, they will go on Amazon and buy,
- 16:53quote, their own product from Amazon.
- 16:57And what they get are counterfeits. And then they will open up or,
- 17:01you know, chop up, dissolve, whatever.
- 17:03They will analyze their, you know, quote, their product they got from Amazon,
- 17:08which is really a counterfeit.
- 17:09And some of them are filled with wheat. Some of them have been filled with sawdust.
- 17:14Like do not buy your supplements from Amazon.
- 17:17And if you're getting a capsule, just make sure that it doesn't say wheat.
- 17:22I don't know of any good supplements that would have wheat in them.
- 17:26The only ones that I know of that do are the counterfeits.
- 17:30And then of course, it's not going to say counterfeit.
- 17:33That would be really funny if the bottle said this is a counterfeit product
- 17:37and does contain wheat. That would make it really easy to identify.
- 17:41All right, so the last thing that you need to watch out for that might be a
- 17:45hidden source of gluten is cosmetics.
- 17:49Some lipstick, lip balm, and other cosmetics can contain some gluten.
- 17:55The first time I encountered this was actually in my shampoo and conditioner.
- 18:00It had wheat germ in it, or maybe it just had wheat. I can't remember.
- 18:03It's been a really long time.
- 18:05I was completely gobsmacked. I'd been using the shampoo and conditioner forever,
- 18:09I don't even remember why I was, oh, I know, I was at somebody else's house.
- 18:15And you know how sometimes when you're in a new environment or a strange environment,
- 18:18you just are extra cautious?
- 18:20So I decided to read the labels on their website.
- 18:23You know, stuff that they were willing to share with me. And it had wheat in
- 18:28it. I was like, okay, that's weird.
- 18:29And so then I looked at my own. I was like, wait, what?
- 18:33There's wheat in my shampoo? Why in the world would they do that?
- 18:37But then I remembered seeing some commercials, and it wasn't for the product
- 18:41that I use, but I remember seeing some commercials and they were talking about
- 18:44how like the wheat made your hair thicker or stronger or something.
- 18:48I was like, okay, so it must be a marketing gimmick and maybe it does work. I don't know.
- 18:52But check your personal care products. It also can be in lotions,
- 18:57moisturizers, lipsticks, because
- 18:59it helps with the viscosity and also can help with the moisturizing.
- 19:05Again, I don't understand because if you ever put your hand in flour,
- 19:08it's sure not moisturizing.
- 19:10I don't know. I'm not a chemist. I'm just telling you what I see on like an
- 19:15actual products and what a good Google search is showing me.
- 19:19I am going to link to one of the articles that was really helpful.
- 19:24It's from the Gluten-Free Society, and this article is about cosmetics.
- 19:30They have some things that you should watch for, the sneaky terms.
- 19:34So of course you're going to look for wheat and you're going to look for gluten,
- 19:36but also watch out for wheat germ.
- 19:39Hydrolyzed wheat protein, hydrolyzed vegetable protein can be a code word for gluten.
- 19:46Avena sativia is in oats and commonly found in lotions.
- 19:52And the Gluten-Free Society says, watch out for that one.
- 19:55And then also triticum estivum. I don't know if I said that right.
- 20:02And that is also another name for wheat. It's spelled T-R-I-T-I-C-U-M-A-E-S-T-I-V-U-M.
- 20:11Well, like I said, I'll put the link to this article down in the show notes
- 20:16so that you can look at those on your own.
- 20:18So I am curious, have you ever accidentally been glutened?
- 20:23You're trying so hard to stay away from gluten and then you run into it in some
- 20:27weird place like soy sauce or Play-Doh or your shampoo.
- 20:31Come over to our school community and share your story and share some favorite
- 20:36recipes because we all love to know what we should be eating.
- 20:40This podcast is for informational and educational purposes only.
- 20:44Please discuss any concerns and plans with your trusted healthcare professional.
- 20:48If you found this episode helpful, will you please share it with a friend?
- 20:51I'll see you next week on the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
