- 0:00Speaker 1: Peyton Carr has been killed in a hit-and-run, leaving his
- 0:03Speaker 1: estate to his three daughters, and his eldest, Vanjie, cannot
- 0:07Speaker 1: accept that the death was an accident. In suspense, beyond reason,
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Carr family faces added pressure when Harry Newton, a
- 0:16Speaker 1: previously unknown business partner, takes an interest in the estate's
- 0:20Speaker 1: undeveloped property and in Vanjie herself. Robert Ryan plays Newton
- 0:26Speaker 1: with Ruth Warwick as Vanjie. Joan Banks, Peggy Weber, and
- 0:31Speaker 1: Bill Johnstone are also heard. Devery Freeman wrote this hour-long
- 0:36Speaker 1: CBS presentation produced by Anton M. Leder, first broadcast February 21, 1948,
- 0:45Speaker 1: as episode 285. It was presented without a commercial sponsor.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Here is the original broadcast.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Suspense!
- 1:15Speaker 3: Radio's outstanding theater of thrills brings you an hour, a full.
- 1:19Speaker 4: 60 minutes of suspense.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Tonight, starring Mr. Robert Ryan and Miss Ruth Warwick in
- 1:25Speaker 3: a play by Devery Freeman entitled Beyond Reason. Edited and
- 1:30Speaker 3: directed by Anton M. Leder and produced by Robert Montgomery.
- 1:39Speaker 5: This is Robert Montgomery. For well over a year, on
- 1:43Speaker 5: the average of five times a week, my newsboy and
- 1:46Speaker 5: I have engaged in the same spirited conversation. Each evening
- 1:50Speaker 5: I greet him with, uh, anything in the papers? And
- 1:54Speaker 5: each evening he answers with, no, same old stuff. Then
- 1:58Speaker 5: I spend part of the evening reading the chronicle of
- 2:00Speaker 5: the day's events, the same old stuff. And I learn
- 2:04Speaker 5: that the tensions in the world are greater or lesser
- 2:06Speaker 5: than that some people want high taxes and some people
- 2:09Speaker 5: want low, that some people are born and some are
- 2:13Speaker 5: married and some are divorced and some are dead.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Same old stuff.
- 2:19Speaker 5: Yesterday a man walked out onto his front porch, lost
- 2:22Speaker 5: his balance on the top step, and one minute later
- 2:25Speaker 5: he was dead. An hour ago a wife in Fort Wayne, Indiana,
- 2:29Speaker 5: went to the hospital. Ten minutes ago she became a mother.
- 2:34Speaker 5: One cycle of life completed, another just beginning. and the
- 2:38Speaker 5: newspaper will report them both, clearly, accurately, and without editorial comment.
- 2:43Speaker 5: We can assume that in each of these homes, the
- 2:46Speaker 5: old patterns of living are broken, and the new ones
- 2:50Speaker 5: are in formation. But we can't know what happens next
- 2:53Speaker 5: in the history of these two families. And these are
- 2:57Speaker 5: very real stories that begin with birth or death. We
- 3:02Speaker 5: have one for you today, a story entitled Beyond Reasons.
- 3:07Speaker 4: And it began this way.
- 3:09Speaker 5: At exactly 7.22 on the night of January 5th, Pinkton
- 3:14Speaker 5: Carr reached the corner of Post and Stockton streets in
- 3:17Speaker 5: downtown San Francisco.
- 3:19Speaker 2: He was feeling fine.
- 3:21Speaker 5: He stopped for a moment to look at an attractive
- 3:23Speaker 5: window display. And then, still looking back, he stepped off
- 3:27Speaker 5: the curb.
- 3:28Speaker 6: Hey, look out!
- 3:29Speaker 2: No!
- 3:30Speaker 7: You hit him! Stop! Stop!
- 3:33Speaker 6: He's a run driver! Stop him! Oh, no, don't look! Oh,
- 3:36Speaker 6: the poor man!
- 3:37Speaker 7: Call an ambulance!
- 3:38Speaker 6: Somebody call an ambulance! This guy's hurt bad! I saw it!
- 3:41Speaker 2: I saw it happen! He just stepped off the curb!
- 3:44Speaker 6: Somebody call an ambulance!
- 3:46Speaker 2: Call an ambulance!
- 3:46Speaker 6: Who is he? Do you know who is he?
- 3:49Speaker 7: You mean, who was he?
- 3:50Speaker 6: Oh, the poor man!
- 3:57Speaker 5: Next day, the newspapers put it briefly and concisely in
- 4:00Speaker 5: a small headline on page four. Businessman hit. Businessman hit
- 4:05Speaker 5: run victim. You probably read it. Not very interesting, unless
- 4:09Speaker 5: you knew him. The police were working on the case.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Maybe one day soon they'd track down the car.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 4:16Speaker 5: It looked like just another one of those things, soon forgotten,
- 4:19Speaker 5: over and done with. But a tragedy like that can
- 4:23Speaker 5: be a beginning as well as an end. It can
- 4:25Speaker 5: start a whole chain of events, generate a whole series
- 4:29Speaker 5: of reactions. It can become the genesis of fear, especially
- 4:34Speaker 5: in the mind as sensitive as the mind of Evangeline Carr,
- 4:39Speaker 5: the eldest of three daughters.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Vanjie Carr.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Beautiful, lonely, susceptible.
- 4:46Speaker 7: Daddy.
- 4:49Speaker 6: Darling Daddy.
- 4:51Speaker 8: Why did he have to die that way? How could
- 4:55Speaker 8: such a thing have happened to him? Accidents like that
- 5:00Speaker 8: don't happen to people like him.
- 5:02Speaker 6: Not without some reason. It couldn't have been an accident.
- 5:07Speaker 6: It couldn't have been. And who is this man? Harry Newton.
- 5:15Speaker 8: This man has suddenly become so important in our lives.
- 5:20Speaker 6: My father's business partner, they say? Oh, but my father
- 5:24Speaker 6: never had a business partner. Never, I'm sure of that.
- 5:27Speaker 9: He would have told me. But then, who is Harry Newton?
- 5:34Speaker 10: He was a hard one to pin down in his car.
- 5:36Speaker 10: Doesn't have a home, not even a permanent address. He
- 5:40Speaker 10: just seems to drift around.
- 5:41Speaker 6: Was he up here in San Francisco the night my
- 5:44Speaker 6: father was killed?
- 5:45Speaker 2: I checked that.
- 5:46Speaker 10: No, he wasn't. But he was here that day. In fact,
- 5:49Speaker 10: that's the day your father and he signed the papers that.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Made them partners.
- 5:53Speaker 6: That day? Yeah.
- 5:55Speaker 10: That's the date on the contract. He left Frisco on
- 5:58Speaker 10: the four o'clock plane. Accident happened about 7.30.
- 6:02Speaker 9: Yes.
- 6:03Speaker 10: He seems to be the promoter type. Somebody else always
- 6:06Speaker 10: takes the risk.
- 6:07Speaker 6: How could my father have made a man like that
- 6:09Speaker 6: his partner?
- 6:18Speaker 11: The contract is perfectly legal, Vanjie. He is your father's partner.
- 6:22Speaker 6: But why?
- 6:23Speaker 8: Why did Dad ever take him in? Dad contributed all
- 6:26Speaker 8: the property. This man contributed nothing.
- 6:30Speaker 11: Nothing but himself. Evidently, your father thought him a super salesman.
- 6:34Speaker 11: You see, they'd planned to subdivide and sell the acreage
- 6:37Speaker 11: here at Della Vista. And he's determined to go through
- 6:40Speaker 11: with it. No, I'm afraid there's not much we can do.
- 6:44Speaker 6: No, I suppose not.
- 6:45Speaker 12: I'm sorry.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 6:47Speaker 11: This is very trying for you and your sisters, I know.
- 6:50Speaker 11: Perhaps when he comes up here, we can persuade him.
- 6:53Speaker 6: He's coming here?
- 6:55Speaker 4: Of course.
- 6:56Speaker 2: To look the place over.
- 6:57Speaker 4: You'd have to stay here quite a bit to get
- 6:59Speaker 4: the work started.
- 7:00Speaker 6: Yes, of course. I must have realized that.
- 7:02Speaker 8: Only, I never really let myself think about how someday
- 7:07Speaker 8: I'd have to.
- 7:08Speaker 6: Meet him face to face.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Uh, Banji. Be careful. Oh.
- 7:16Speaker 6: You don't trust him either, do you?
- 7:19Speaker 2: No.
- 7:21Speaker 4: I don't trust him either.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Just an everyday accident.
- 7:30Speaker 5: But it can be the beginning of many things. Especially
- 7:33Speaker 5: when the dead man leaves unfinished business behind. Unfinished business
- 7:37Speaker 5: and 400 choice suburban acres between the highway and the seas.
- 7:41Speaker 5: 400 undeveloped acres in which any real estate man would
- 7:45Speaker 5: see the possibilities. Add to that a partner like Harry
- 7:49Speaker 5: Newton and three beautiful daughters, especially a daughter like Vanjie.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Are you hurt?
- 8:01Speaker 6: No, no, I guess not. I just fell down getting
- 8:05Speaker 6: out of your way.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Here, let me brush you off. I'm sorry. I came
- 8:08Speaker 2: around the bend and didn't see you until.
- 8:10Speaker 6: Oh, no, it was my fault.
- 8:11Speaker 8: I shouldn't have been walking in the middle of the
- 8:13Speaker 8: road daydreaming like that.
- 8:16Speaker 6: All right, thanks.
- 8:17Speaker 2: The receiving hospitals are made for people like you.
- 8:20Speaker 6: I know.
- 8:21Speaker 8: I started out at the age of two playing with
- 8:24Speaker 8: electric light sockets.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Since I nearly knocked you down, I better introduce myself.
- 8:28Speaker 2: My name's Harry Newton. And I always cross streets when
- 8:31Speaker 2: the light is green. Getting by in life merely requires
- 8:34Speaker 2: the ability to take advantage of green lights.
- 8:36Speaker 6: And the ability to recognize red lights.
- 8:39Speaker 10: Huh?
- 8:40Speaker 6: I'm Evangeline Carr.
- 8:43Speaker 2: So... So you're Vangie, the beautiful one.
- 8:47Speaker 6: No, no, Grace is the beautiful one.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And Susie?
- 8:50Speaker 6: She's the cute one, the baby.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And you, Vangie?
- 8:54Speaker 6: Oh, I'm... Well, I'm just me, Vangie. The plain one.
- 8:59Speaker 6: The old maid.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Just because you're the oldest?
- 9:04Speaker 6: Mr. Newton, you wouldn't be interested in me.
- 9:08Speaker 2: No? Maybe I like plain girls.
- 9:18Speaker 8: That was the way it was. So sudden I couldn't
- 9:20Speaker 8: prepare for it. And I'd met Harry Newton.
- 9:24Speaker 6: But what about all those questions and fears in my mind?
- 9:29Speaker 6: What had happened to them? I didn't know. Downstairs, Harry
- 9:34Speaker 6: Newton was talking to Aunt Martha. Of course you'll realize, Mr. Newton,
- 9:39Speaker 6: this is merely an interview.
- 9:41Speaker 13: Our only knowledge of you is that my brother entrusted
- 9:43Speaker 13: you with some of his real estate ventures.
- 9:45Speaker 2: He didn't entrust me with anything, Andy. He watched me
- 9:47Speaker 2: like a hawk.
- 9:49Speaker 13: You'll realize, of course, the responsibilities that go with this venture.
- 9:53Speaker 13: We know nothing of your character or affiliations. Perhaps you
- 9:57Speaker 13: can supply some of the details.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I've got a credit card with... the Union Oil Company. I... Look, Andy,
- 10:02Speaker 2: I came 400 miles from Los Angeles to discuss the
- 10:04Speaker 2: promotion of a subdivision. It's a little late for references.
- 10:08Speaker 2: I'm in this deal with both feet and a legal document.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Are you handling it for the kids?
- 10:12Speaker 6: Well, not exactly.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Well, then let's have a drink and make small talk.
- 10:15Speaker 2: You'll learn more about me that way. How about it?
- 10:17Speaker 6: Thank you, no. You can make yourself at home. Dinner
- 10:20Speaker 6: is at seven.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Okay, thanks. Thanks very much. Never let a lady make
- 10:40Speaker 2: a phone call when she doesn't know she's not alone.
- 10:42Speaker 2: That's rule number.
- 10:43Speaker 6: Who are you?
- 10:44Speaker 2: Harry Newton. Who are you, Grace?
- 10:46Speaker 12: No, I'm Susie. The youngest. You're the man who murdered
- 10:53Speaker 12: my father.
- 10:55Speaker 2: That's a pretty big statement for a little girl.
- 10:59Speaker 12: I say it only as an apology for having thought it.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I accept your apology. Only don't say it again.
- 11:08Speaker 6: I won't.
- 11:10Speaker 12: You going back to Los Angeles soon?
- 11:12Speaker 2: Tomorrow.
- 11:12Speaker 12: Would you like company?
- 11:14Speaker 2: A passenger?
- 11:16Speaker 12: I said company.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Your aunt will ask for character references.
- 11:21Speaker 12: I didn't ask for any.
- 11:24Speaker 2: You got yourself a ride, Junior.
- 11:26Speaker 12: You wouldn't be thinking of leaving earlier.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Uh-uh.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I'm sleeping over. Our first customer is coming to dinner.
- 11:34Speaker 10: Who?
- 11:35Speaker 2: People by the name of Burkhart.
- 11:38Speaker 14: Oh?
- 11:39Speaker 12: Quit Burkhart and his silly wife, huh? They're awful bores.
- 11:44Speaker 2: And get set for some boring neighbors. We plan to
- 11:46Speaker 2: sell them a lot.
- 11:48Speaker 12: That's too bad. I love company, but I think I'll
- 11:52Speaker 12: develop a headache and stay in my room tonight. Unless
- 11:56Speaker 12: I can change your mind about leaving.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Shall we change the subject?
- 12:02Speaker 12: Suit yourself.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I just don't want to press my luck too far.
- 12:05Speaker 7: THE END.
- 12:13Speaker 8: All that evening, through dinner with the Burkharts, through the
- 12:15Speaker 8: business talks that followed, all I could do was watch him,
- 12:19Speaker 8: listen to his voice. I'd never expected a man like this.
- 12:23Speaker 8: Never expected him to make me feel like this. Like
- 12:27Speaker 8: I felt when he smiled and said goodnight. Like I
- 12:30Speaker 8: felt when he drove away with Susie for Los Angeles
- 12:34Speaker 8: next morning.
- 12:35Speaker 6: Like I felt when he called me long distance.
- 12:39Speaker 2: How are you getting along up there without me, Vanjie?
- 12:41Speaker 6: Oh, I suppose we're just barely managing. Good.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I'll have to hurry back.
- 12:45Speaker 6: The surveyors will be here next week.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Who cares?
- 12:47Speaker 6: But I.
- 12:48Speaker 2: I don't want to waste this call talking business.
- 12:50Speaker 6: Then what.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I just want to.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Talk to you.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Still an old mate, I hope.
- 12:54Speaker 6: I'm afraid so.
- 12:55Speaker 2: And still as plain as ever.
- 12:56Speaker 6: Yes.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Wonderful. Don't ever change, Vanjie.
- 12:59Speaker 6: All right. Why did I laugh? And why did I
- 13:06Speaker 6: go around walking on air?
- 13:08Speaker 8: He was just flirting, probably with a purpose, for business reasons.
- 13:14Speaker 6: But I didn't care. I knew it was crazy, but
- 13:17Speaker 6: I didn't care.
- 13:18Speaker 8: I counted the days until he'd be back. When he came,
- 13:22Speaker 8: he brought me a gift, a quilted velvet robe.
- 13:27Speaker 6: Aunt Martha said it looked like the inside of a coffin,
- 13:31Speaker 6: but I liked it. And I liked the funny little
- 13:34Speaker 6: note that went with it.
- 13:36Speaker 8: After a few days seeing him, talking to him, began
- 13:40Speaker 8: to fill my thoughts so completely that I couldn't sleep.
- 13:45Speaker 8: So one night I walked down through the rose garden
- 13:48Speaker 8: to the little tea house on the edge of the palisade.
- 13:52Speaker 8: I was sitting there, watching the moonlight on the surf
- 13:55Speaker 8: far below.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Don't think anything personal. You're not alone.
- 14:02Speaker 6: Oh, it's you.
- 14:03Speaker 2: What's the matter? No sleep tonight?
- 14:06Speaker 6: No. I have things on my mind.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Like real estate? And me?
- 14:11Speaker 6: Yes. I'm trying to make some sort of plan.
- 14:16Speaker 2: I just like to feel my way along. See how
- 14:18Speaker 2: far I can go. Plans are good to start with.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Then you follow your instinct.
- 14:23Speaker 6: I like to know where I'm going.
- 14:25Speaker 2: And you don't?
- 14:27Speaker 6: I'm not sure.
- 14:29Speaker 2: You've never asked me a lot of questions like the others.
- 14:32Speaker 2: But I suppose you've been wondering why your father and
- 14:34Speaker 2: I were doing business together. Why he invited me in.
- 14:37Speaker 6: I knew there must have been a reason.
- 14:39Speaker 2: A reason? I met him in Palm Springs, gave him
- 14:42Speaker 2: a tip on a horse, and it won. He figured
- 14:44Speaker 2: he owed me something.
- 14:46Speaker 6: That's hard to believe.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Isn't it? Well, of course, he liked me, too. He
- 14:51Speaker 2: thought I had guts and brains. Beyond that, he didn't
- 14:54Speaker 2: want to know a thing.
- 14:55Speaker 6: And if he had?
- 14:57Speaker 2: I'd have told him.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Come here.
- 15:02Speaker 6: Harry, no.
- 15:04Speaker 2: You still afraid to follow your instincts?
- 15:08Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Come here.
- 15:21Speaker 6: It's all so crazy. Two weeks ago, Harry Newton was
- 15:24Speaker 6: just a name. A name I hated and feared. There's
- 15:28Speaker 6: nothing of that now. Now he's a man. A man
- 15:32Speaker 6: that I love. My husband. We drove to Las Vegas
- 15:38Speaker 6: and were married.
- 15:39Speaker 9: In a little chapel there.
- 15:40Speaker 6: Then we had a fast honeymoon, play roulette, seeing Boulder Dam,
- 15:44Speaker 6: just having fun being together.
- 15:47Speaker 8: And when we came home again, the words were still
- 15:50Speaker 8: ringing in my ears. For better, for worse, for richer,
- 15:54Speaker 8: for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and
- 15:58Speaker 8: cherish until death do us part.
- 16:03Speaker 9: Until death? Do us part.
- 16:08Speaker 13: I've moved my things into a corner room, Benji, so
- 16:11Speaker 13: that you and he may have the suite.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Relax, Andy. This is strictly temporary.
- 16:14Speaker 8: We'll probably go to Los Angeles eventually. All Harry's friends
- 16:18Speaker 8: are there.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Meanwhile, I'll have my stuff shipped up. There isn't much.
- 16:21Speaker 2: It's packed away in Lou Danch's apartment. He's the one
- 16:23Speaker 2: I was telling you about, honey. He owns that restaurant
- 16:25Speaker 2: on the strip.
- 16:25Speaker 13: While you were away, there was a phone call from
- 16:28Speaker 13: Miss Newton.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 16:29Speaker 6: From a Miss Kitty Platt. Kitty Platt?
- 16:33Speaker 2: Girl I used to date. Oh. Probably wondering what happened
- 16:36Speaker 2: to me. I wonder what did. Look at me. Head
- 16:39Speaker 2: over heels in matrimony, and I love it.
- 16:42Speaker 6: Oh, Harry.
- 16:45Speaker 12: Harry. Is that a private match, or can anybody get
- 16:48Speaker 12: in it?
- 16:48Speaker 6: Oh.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Hello, Susie. Hi.
- 16:53Speaker 12: You'll have to excuse my lack of tact. Never been
- 16:56Speaker 12: a sister-in-law before, and I'm at a loss. Best of everything, sis.
- 17:03Speaker 6: You rate it. Thank you, Susie. Is anything wrong, dear?
- 17:08Speaker 9: You look awfully tired.
- 17:10Speaker 12: Hasn't Harry told you? It takes a gentleman to keep
- 17:14Speaker 12: a secret. Thank you, Harry.
- 17:18Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 17:20Speaker 12: What a lovely wedding band, Vangie. Nothing temporary about this
- 17:24Speaker 12: piece of jewelry.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Three passes at a crap table.
- 17:27Speaker 12: Tell me, Vangie, darling. Did he buy you the short
- 17:30Speaker 12: order ceremony or the blue plate? It's very impressive, I understand. Bless,
- 17:37Speaker 12: O Lord, this ring, that he who gives it and
- 17:40Speaker 12: she who wears it may abide in thy peace.
- 17:44Speaker 6: Let us pray.
- 17:46Speaker 15: Susie.
- 17:48Speaker 6: Susie, dear. Harry.
- 17:51Speaker 2: That's a sick girl. Mind if I speak to her?
- 17:56Speaker 2: As a member of the family, I feel I have
- 17:57Speaker 2: the privilege of helping. I'll be right back.
- 18:01Speaker 6: But, Harry. Vandy! Vandy!
- 18:03Speaker 10: What?
- 18:03Speaker 2: Oh.
- 18:05Speaker 6: Oh, what is it, Aunt Martha?
- 18:06Speaker 13: Well, I didn't want to talk to you, dear, while
- 18:08Speaker 13: he was with you. But I'm worried about Susie. She's
- 18:12Speaker 13: been acting very queerly. Not eating and so jumpy.
- 18:16Speaker 6: What do you suppose is wrong? I don't know.
- 18:20Speaker 13: But she hasn't been herself since she went to Los Angeles.
- 18:23Speaker 13: Perhaps if you had a talk with her.
- 18:25Speaker 6: Harry is doing that now. Harry? Yes. A stranger.
- 18:29Speaker 12: Auntie.
- 18:30Speaker 6: Oh, I'm sorry, dear.
- 18:31Speaker 13: I shouldn't have said that. It's just that I can't
- 18:34Speaker 13: get used to the idea. I mean, his being one
- 18:37Speaker 13: of us. But then I hardly know him. It's very
- 18:41Speaker 13: hard to know him. Yes, I suppose it is. Well,
- 18:45Speaker 13: I only meant that perhaps someone else should talk to Susie.
- 18:49Speaker 8: You mean you think maybe Harry has something to do
- 18:52Speaker 8: with Susie acting this way?
- 18:53Speaker 6: Why, no, Vanjie, I didn't say that. No. No, of
- 19:00Speaker 6: course not.
- 19:09Speaker 10: Harry?
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 19:10Speaker 6: How is Susie?
- 19:11Speaker 2: She'll be okay.
- 19:12Speaker 6: Maybe I better talk to her.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Leave her alone. She won't tell you anything.
- 19:16Speaker 6: Then you tell me.
- 19:18Speaker 2: That's one of those things. How do the writers put it?
- 19:22Speaker 2: Unrequited love. You? Well, if it is, she hasn't told
- 19:28Speaker 2: me the whole truth.
- 19:29Speaker 6: What did she tell you?
- 19:30Speaker 2: Say, how do you turn the heat out in this
- 19:33Speaker 2: dungeon of a room?
- 19:34Speaker 6: There's a gas heater in the fireplace, but what did
- 19:37Speaker 6: she tell you? Harry.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Look, Angel. Are you going to turn on me, too?
- 19:45Speaker 2: Don't do it. I need you. I've been rattling around
- 19:48Speaker 2: like a pebble in this old drum of a world
- 19:50Speaker 2: with nothing to grab onto. Now I'm safe. I've got somebody.
- 19:54Speaker 2: This alley cat's got a home. That's you, Angel. You're
- 19:57Speaker 2: my roof and four walls.
- 19:59Speaker 6: Oh, Harry, darling, please understand.
- 20:01Speaker 8: It's not that I don't trust you.
- 20:03Speaker 6: But I'm worried about Susie.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Okay, baby. You talk to her tomorrow if it'll do
- 20:07Speaker 2: any good. But right now, don't worry about it. Come on,
- 20:11Speaker 2: let's get some sleep.
- 20:13Speaker 7: Help! Help!
- 20:25Speaker 2: Oh, what is that?
- 20:28Speaker 5: Help!
- 20:29Speaker 2: What was that?
- 20:30Speaker 6: I don't know. What time is it?
- 20:33Speaker 2: Six o'clock.
- 20:34Speaker 7: Help!
- 20:35Speaker 2: Help!
- 20:36Speaker 6: It's Aaron, I think.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Who's Aaron?
- 20:38Speaker 6: He's the gardener. He must be below that window there.
- 20:44Speaker 2: What's up?
- 20:45Speaker 6: It's Miss Susie. Susie? What about her?
- 20:47Speaker 2: What about her?
- 20:48Speaker 6: She's dead.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Dead?
- 20:51Speaker 6: Dead!
- 21:00Speaker 5: Tragedy begets tragedy. Accidents breed more accidents. Or was this
- 21:06Speaker 5: another accident? At any rate... In the grim sequence of
- 21:10Speaker 5: events started by that simple accident on a city street,
- 21:13Speaker 5: a second member of the Carr family was dead. They
- 21:18Speaker 5: say tragedies strike in threes. I wonder, and so does
- 21:23Speaker 5: Vanjie Carr wonder.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Why?
- 21:27Speaker 6: Why did it happen? Why did she do it? What
- 21:31Speaker 6: did Harry know? Did he have anything to do with it? Oh, no,
- 21:36Speaker 6: I mustn't. Just relax now. But, Rez, that's what I'm
- 21:41Speaker 6: supposed to do.
- 21:42Speaker 13: Relax.
- 21:44Speaker 8: In a few minutes, he'll come up and tell me.
- 21:47Speaker 8: Tell me what they're talking about down there.
- 21:50Speaker 6: He and Aaron and my sister, Grace. Tell me about it, Aaron,
- 21:54Speaker 6: from the beginning.
- 21:55Speaker 10: It's hard for me to tell it now, Miss Grace.
- 21:58Speaker 6: It's like a dream.
- 21:59Speaker 2: He hasn't told it the same way twice.
- 22:01Speaker 10: But I try to.
- 22:02Speaker 6: I try to. Mr. Newton knows that. Now try again, Aaron. Well.
- 22:07Speaker 10: I was up early, not early for me, but early,
- 22:10Speaker 10: and there was a mist and the ground was wet,
- 22:12Speaker 10: so I wore my rubbers. I was pinning back the
- 22:15Speaker 10: honeysuckle on the trellis near the garage when she came by.
- 22:19Speaker 10: Didn't see me, but I saw her walking as if
- 22:23Speaker 10: in her sleep. Yet she looked as if she knew
- 22:25Speaker 10: where she was going. And she was dressed and combed
- 22:29Speaker 10: and carried a purse. So I said good morning. But
- 22:33Speaker 10: she didn't answer and went off into the mist toward
- 22:36Speaker 10: the tea house on the edge of the palisade where
- 22:38Speaker 10: there's only one path. And then presently I worked my
- 22:42Speaker 10: way down the path through the rose garden to say
- 22:45Speaker 10: good morning again. But she was gone. She had jumped
- 22:49Speaker 10: into the ocean onto the rocks below, and I found
- 22:52Speaker 10: her purse, that purse on the bar and that riding crop.
- 22:56Speaker 2: The riding crop is mine. I left it there several
- 22:59Speaker 2: days ago.
- 23:01Speaker 6: Oh, I see. All right, Aaron, that's all. You may
- 23:05Speaker 6: go now.
- 23:06Speaker 2: All right, Miss Grace.
- 23:09Speaker 6: Well, Mr.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Newton? Harry's the name.
- 23:12Speaker 6: Yes, of course. We are related, aren't we?
- 23:14Speaker 16: Should I apologize for not belaboring you with congratulatory messages
- 23:18Speaker 16: on your marriage?
- 23:19Speaker 2: Some people are just naturally short on sentiment. You have
- 23:21Speaker 2: other gifts.
- 23:23Speaker 10: Thanks.
- 23:24Speaker 16: It's just that I have an instinctive aversion to attractive
- 23:27Speaker 16: men being snatched from the open market.
- 23:31Speaker 2: If I ever get back on the market, I'll send
- 23:32Speaker 2: you a credit slip.
- 23:34Speaker 6: Planning to get back on the market?
- 23:37Speaker 2: Not at this particular time. I see.
- 23:45Speaker 7: Anybody here?
- 23:51Speaker 2: Vanjie.
- 23:52Speaker 6: Don't turn on the light, Harry. I look awful.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Relax, Angel. I know how upset you are, but you've
- 23:59Speaker 2: got to relax.
- 24:00Speaker 9: I can't. I can't.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Oh, Susie. Susie, you poor baby.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Take it easy.
- 24:07Speaker 15: Susie.
- 24:07Speaker 2: This way you'll just fly apart, springs and wheels and everything.
- 24:11Speaker 2: You're going to have to rest a few days.
- 24:13Speaker 6: Oh, I want to know everything, Harry. Who was it?
- 24:16Speaker 6: Who did this to Susie?
- 24:19Speaker 2: I lied to her.
- 24:21Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I mean, I lied when I said Susie chose me
- 24:25Speaker 2: as a confidant. The way it happened, I stumbled into
- 24:28Speaker 2: the middle of her romance by accident.
- 24:30Speaker 6: Then who?
- 24:31Speaker 2: A neighbor of yours, Whit Burkhart.
- 24:34Speaker 6: Whit Burkhart, but... Oh, he's married.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yeah, you see, I bumped into them in a quiet
- 24:38Speaker 2: little restaurant in Los Angeles. I was about as welcome
- 24:42Speaker 2: as bad news in a collect telegram. I grabbed a
- 24:44Speaker 2: quick one at the bar and ran.
- 24:46Speaker 6: But is that all?
- 24:47Speaker 2: No. Susie made it her business to see me the
- 24:50Speaker 2: next day. She wanted me to promise not to tell
- 24:54Speaker 2: anyone I'd seen them together. I let her talk, and
- 24:57Speaker 2: she did. Plenty. It wasn't nice the way she told it,
- 25:01Speaker 2: crying as if her insides were splintered. This fellow Burkhardt
- 25:05Speaker 2: had met her in Los Angeles to let her know
- 25:07Speaker 2: that they'd come to the end of the line. He
- 25:09Speaker 2: was afraid his wife was getting wise, so they had
- 25:12Speaker 2: one last rendezvous. That's all, except the way she loved
- 25:15Speaker 2: this guy. He must be all right.
- 25:18Speaker 6: Oh, no, Harry.
- 25:19Speaker 8: A man doesn't have to be all right for a
- 25:23Speaker 8: woman to love him. The next few days I spent
- 25:34Speaker 8: in bed. I was supposed to relax, but I couldn't.
- 25:38Speaker 8: It was too much to think about. Even the doctor's
- 25:41Speaker 8: pills didn't help. Little things made impressions on me. Little
- 25:47Speaker 8: things that people said.
- 25:49Speaker 16: Your husband took me riding this morning, darling.
- 25:54Speaker 6: Tell me, Vanjie, how did you ever trap him? I
- 25:57Speaker 6: don't know. He just seemed to like me.
- 26:00Speaker 16: Well, I guess we're not hard to like. Daddy left
- 26:03Speaker 16: us quite a bit of allure. A square block in
- 26:06Speaker 16: San Francisco, four theaters, two open-air markets, and a lovely
- 26:10Speaker 16: office building in Los Angeles. In short, a real estate
- 26:13Speaker 16: man's paradise.
- 26:13Speaker 6: Grace. Sorry, darling.
- 26:17Speaker 16: He's so different from my faithful, methodical Lenny, I'm just jealous.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Aren't you flattered?
- 26:31Speaker 11: Well.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Got you making yourself irresistible.
- 26:35Speaker 6: I just got tired of looking like something that's been
- 26:37Speaker 6: left out in the rain.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Flowers do all right.
- 26:40Speaker 6: You're very sweet, Harry, but I know my limitations.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Nonsense. I think you're very attractive.
- 26:46Speaker 6: But not beautiful, like Grace. If we take her for
- 26:50Speaker 6: a measuring stick.
- 26:52Speaker 2: No one would take Grace for a measuring stick or
- 26:55Speaker 2: any other kind of stick. She's the sexy type.
- 27:04Speaker 6: Nice of you to come, Mrs.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Burkhart.
- 27:07Speaker 6: Cigarette? No, thanks. Whit made me give up smoking. He
- 27:11Speaker 6: really babies me, that man. Forced me to go away
- 27:14Speaker 6: for a two-week rest. I told him I felt fine,
- 27:17Speaker 6: but he insisted. Was that when he went to Los Angeles?
- 27:21Speaker 6: Los Angeles? Whit hasn't been to Los Angeles in four years. Why, no,
- 27:26Speaker 6: he went along with me. Of course she was lying.
- 27:33Speaker 8: Her husband had been to Los Angeles, just as Harry
- 27:35Speaker 8: said he had, with Susie.
- 27:37Speaker 6: He must have been. She was just trying to make
- 27:40Speaker 6: Harry look bad. So were the rest of them. That's
- 27:44Speaker 6: why I took.
- 27:45Speaker 8: To listening to find out what they were up to
- 27:49Speaker 8: to protect Harry.
- 27:52Speaker 6: I listened, even from behind doors. Hello, Newton.
- 27:58Speaker 2: You remember me? Gurney, the lawyer? Uh-huh. Is Mrs.
- 28:03Speaker 11: Newton too ill for a visitor?
- 28:04Speaker 2: Yes, she is. What do you want? It's in regard
- 28:07Speaker 2: to your.
- 28:07Speaker 6: Suggestion, Mr.
- 28:08Speaker 11: Newton, that arrangements be made to give you power of
- 28:11Speaker 11: attorney in matters pertaining to Della Vista.
- 28:13Speaker 2: You can lower your voice. I told you my wife
- 28:15Speaker 2: is ill.
- 28:16Speaker 11: Any request of that nature should be gone over with
- 28:19Speaker 11: all parties concerned.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I said lower your voice.
- 28:22Speaker 6: Of course.
- 28:25Speaker 11: Two untimely tragedies have decreased the number of parties concerned.
- 28:30Speaker 11: I'd say you have two down and two to go, Mr.
- 28:34Speaker 14: Newton.
- 28:34Speaker 2: What do you mean by that?
- 28:38Speaker 6: Nothing.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Have you discussed this matter with Mrs.
- 28:41Speaker 6: Newton?
- 28:42Speaker 2: There's no reason for her to object. On the other hand,
- 28:45Speaker 2: there's Grace Carr. Have you spoken to her? Not more
- 28:49Speaker 2: than a moment ago. It's no go, Newton.
- 28:52Speaker 11: This Carr, it seems, has developed quite an interest in
- 28:56Speaker 11: Della Vista, or some aspects of it. She intends to
- 29:00Speaker 11: work with you as closely as possible.
- 29:04Speaker 2: That sounds engaging.
- 29:05Speaker 6: Yes.
- 29:07Speaker 11: For you, it should be a cinch, Newton. I understand
- 29:11Speaker 11: you're quite a hand with the ladies.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Well, I've had my innings.
- 29:23Speaker 6: I listen to everything.
- 29:26Speaker 8: Sometimes I woke up in the middle of the night
- 29:27Speaker 8: and listened. Listen to Harry and Grace downstairs talking.
- 29:32Speaker 6: Laughing.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Laughing.
- 29:35Speaker 6: They laugh together a lot these days. Oh, Harry, you're wonderful.
- 29:39Speaker 6: I don't know how you did it.
- 29:40Speaker 2: What's up, partner?
- 29:41Speaker 16: Telegram from Jim Strand. He's willing to talk turns, and
- 29:45Speaker 16: he's free to talk tonight.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Well, for heaven's sake, let's be sociable. Maybe we can
- 29:48Speaker 2: have the deal signed and moving tomorrow.
- 29:50Speaker 6: That means staying over in San Francisco tonight.
- 29:53Speaker 2: I'll take care of the hotel reservations.
- 29:55Speaker 6: Oh, high pressure, Harry.
- 29:57Speaker 2: We'll take them to the best restaurant in town and
- 29:59Speaker 2: we'll order their best meal. Are you worried about your figure?
- 30:03Speaker 17: No.
- 30:05Speaker 6: Are you worried about... See you later.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Hello. I went to Grosvenor in San Francisco.
- 30:11Speaker 6: A charming little hotel.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Oh, it's you. Hello, Angel. I thought you were in bed.
- 30:19Speaker 2: How's your headache?
- 30:19Speaker 7: Better.
- 30:21Speaker 6: I'd like to go along with.
- 30:22Speaker 14: You, Harry.
- 30:23Speaker 7: Tonight?
- 30:23Speaker 2: Tonight? In your condition?
- 30:25Speaker 6: What's wrong with me? Don't you want my company?
- 30:28Speaker 2: You're not up to it. You're sick.
- 30:30Speaker 6: I said I'm better. I've decided to help you.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Help me?
- 30:36Speaker 6: Grace helps you.
- 30:38Speaker 2: She tags along.
- 30:40Speaker 6: Can't I tag along, too? Please, Harry, I want to
- 30:44Speaker 6: go with you.
- 30:45Speaker 2: All right. Why not?
- 30:46Speaker 6: And this afternoon.
- 30:48Speaker 8: I want you to take me riding. Did you know
- 30:50Speaker 8: I could ride? I'm better than Grace. I've won cups.
- 30:53Speaker 8: Shall we go riding this afternoon?
- 30:55Speaker 2: Sure, Angel. Maybe that's a good idea.
- 31:08Speaker 6: What's that, Grace? I don't know, Aunt Martha.
- 31:11Speaker 9: I can't see.
- 31:12Speaker 6: The fog is rolling in.
- 31:14Speaker 2: It's a horse.
- 31:16Speaker 6: No rider. Is it Benji's? Well, Harry's.
- 31:18Speaker 16: He's tearing down the path toward the highway, probably heading
- 31:21Speaker 16: for the stables.
- 31:22Speaker 6: Aunt Martha, something's happened.
- 31:23Speaker 10: I knew it.
- 31:24Speaker 6: I knew it.
- 31:24Speaker 10: Come on.
- 31:27Speaker 6: Here comes the other one. It's Harry. He's carrying Benji.
- 31:30Speaker 2: Hi.
- 31:30Speaker 7: Hi.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Help me get her up to her room.
- 31:36Speaker 6: Please stop acting silly. I wasn't hurt a bit.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Yes, she was. Her shoulder's bruised. I'm calling Dr. Rupert.
- 31:41Speaker 2: And what's more, you're going to the clinic tomorrow for x-rays.
- 31:43Speaker 2: No sense taking chances.
- 31:44Speaker 6: What happened?
- 31:45Speaker 2: A horse bolted.
- 31:46Speaker 6: Why? I don't know. Maybe Harry does. Yes. He was
- 31:49Speaker 6: riding just behind. Did you see any reason for it, Harry?
- 31:53Speaker 2: No, not a thing.
- 32:02Speaker 8: I tell you, Harry, there's nothing wrong with me. Nothing
- 32:05Speaker 8: but a simple old-fashioned headache.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Maybe you can grab some sleep before the doctor gets here.
- 32:10Speaker 6: Why are you making such a fuss? Is it because
- 32:14Speaker 6: you don't want me with you in San Francisco?
- 32:17Speaker 2: You certainly can't go till we're sure you're all right.
- 32:20Speaker 6: Then you're going without me.
- 32:23Speaker 2: We'll talk about it later. Get some sleep, Angel.
- 32:29Speaker 6: What are you doing?
- 32:31Speaker 2: Connecting up your heater, this room is like a tomb.
- 32:33Speaker 2: If we take the chill out, maybe you'll sleep.
- 32:36Speaker 6: You won't go without me, will you, Harry?
- 32:40Speaker 2: Are we back on that again?
- 32:41Speaker 6: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Harry.
- 32:46Speaker 10: What?
- 32:48Speaker 6: I've made you angry with me, haven't I?
- 32:50Speaker 2: No.
- 32:52Speaker 6: Do you love me?
- 32:54Speaker 2: Sure.
- 32:54Speaker 8: It's so strange, this marriage of ours.
- 32:59Speaker 6: It's more like an affair, really. It happened so fast.
- 33:03Speaker 8: We don't really know each other, do we, Harry?
- 33:08Speaker 6: Why did you want me, Harry?
- 33:11Speaker 2: Because I love you.
- 33:12Speaker 6: Because you love me.
- 33:16Speaker 8: Yet if I were gone tomorrow, would there be another
- 33:19Speaker 8: to take my place as there were others before me?
- 33:22Speaker 6: Oh, no. Don't answer that. I get sillier by the minute.
- 33:29Speaker 6: Forgive me, darling.
- 33:31Speaker 2: There's nothing to forgive.
- 33:32Speaker 5: Yes, there is.
- 33:34Speaker 6: I won't be silly anymore.
- 33:36Speaker 2: I'm sure you won't, Angel. Good night. I'll see that
- 33:41Speaker 2: you're not disturbed.
- 33:44Speaker 13: Harry.
- 33:46Speaker 6: Harry. Oh, darling. Harry.
- 34:00Speaker 8: I'd come to that state of mind. The senses are
- 34:04Speaker 8: so drugged with fatigue.
- 34:06Speaker 6: There's an end to caring. Almost. All the doubts, the
- 34:12Speaker 6: fears loomed up and enveloped me.
- 34:16Speaker 9: Yet, I was getting drowsy.
- 34:20Speaker 8: Reality was becoming distorted into nightmare. There was a strange
- 34:25Speaker 8: ringing in my ears and I began to see things.
- 34:31Speaker 6: Like a dream. I thought I saw Pookie, my canary,
- 34:37Speaker 6: lying on the bottom of his cage with his little
- 34:41Speaker 6: legs thrust stiffly upward in death.
- 34:47Speaker 9: Then I was hearing things like.
- 34:51Speaker 6: A hissing snake and down on the floor I saw it.
- 34:58Speaker 6: Coiled up by the heater. I must.
- 35:04Speaker 9: I must.
- 35:05Speaker 10: Grace.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Grace laughing.
- 35:05Speaker 17: Laughing with Harry.
- 35:06Speaker 6: Somehow, for the first time, I didn't care. She had
- 35:08Speaker 6: no cause to close. It would happen to her, too.
- 35:31Speaker 6: Just like it happened to death and to Susan. And
- 35:39Speaker 6: like it was happening.
- 35:43Speaker 12: To me.
- 35:55Speaker 3: In tonight's full hour of suspense, Mr. Robert Ryan appears
- 35:59Speaker 3: as Harry Newton and Miss Ruth Warwick appears as Vanjie
- 36:01Speaker 3: Carr in Beyond Reason. Tonight's study in suspense. In just
- 36:14Speaker 3: a moment, we will return with act two of suspense.
- 36:17Speaker 18: This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 36:31Speaker 3: And now, back to our Hollywood soundstage and to our producer, Mr.
- 36:35Speaker 3: Robert Montgomery, for Act Two of Beyond Reason, starring Ruth
- 36:39Speaker 3: Warwick and Robert Ryan, in a narrative well calculated to
- 36:43Speaker 3: keep you in.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Suspense!
- 36:45Speaker 6: Suspense!
- 36:56Speaker 5: It all started with a fatal accident on a street
- 36:58Speaker 5: corner in San Francisco. You probably read about it in
- 37:01Speaker 5: the papers a few weeks ago. Just an everyday accident.
- 37:05Speaker 5: But it was an end and a beginning. An end
- 37:08Speaker 5: for Pinkton Carr, who was killed, and a beginning for
- 37:11Speaker 5: his three daughters and Harry Newton. But with the sequence
- 37:15Speaker 5: of events half played through, there are now only two daughters.
- 37:20Speaker 5: One down and two to go. And right now, lying
- 37:23Speaker 5: on the bed in her room, is Vanjie Carr, the
- 37:26Speaker 5: hiss of gas loud in her ears, drowning out the thoughts,
- 37:30Speaker 5: the fears, and the voices of Sister Grace and Harry
- 37:33Speaker 5: Newton in the living room below.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Harry?
- 37:37Speaker 16: I told Jim Strand we'd meet him at nine. We
- 37:40Speaker 16: can make it if we hurry.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Where's Auntie?
- 37:42Speaker 6: She's resting.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Okay, let's go.
- 37:45Speaker 6: Well, what about Mrs.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Newton?
- 37:49Speaker 6: Shall we take a peek?
- 37:49Speaker 2: No, no, she'll wake up if I go in. Let
- 37:53Speaker 2: her sleep. I could be back by midnight if we hurry.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Let's just go.
- 38:06Speaker 6: I dreamed church bells.
- 38:08Speaker 9: Were tolling my dead.
- 38:11Speaker 8: That someone was stuffing my throat with nostrils.
- 38:14Speaker 6: With cotton padding. I couldn't breathe. My limbs were bound
- 38:21Speaker 6: to the bed. Tried to scream, but I couldn't. I
- 38:26Speaker 6: started to spin. The bed was spinning.
- 38:30Speaker 15: The whole room was spinning like a whirlpool, ever narrowing,
- 38:36Speaker 15: until finally it was as thin as the sand of
- 38:39Speaker 15: a bell.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Oh, Dr. Rupert.
- 38:47Speaker 14: I just got your message.
- 38:49Speaker 4: Been out all day.
- 38:50Speaker 2: How is she? She seems quite well. I guess my
- 38:52Speaker 2: call was a little hasty.
- 38:53Speaker 13: What happened?
- 38:54Speaker 2: Fell off a horse.
- 38:55Speaker 14: That girl, always something. It's been that way as long
- 38:59Speaker 14: as I've known her. So she thought she was strong
- 39:01Speaker 14: enough to go riding. Maybe that's my fault.
- 39:05Speaker 2: It was the horse's fault. Well, I'll go up and
- 39:07Speaker 2: have a look. She's, uh, she's sleeping.
- 39:10Speaker 5: Oh.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Well, that's always good medicine.
- 39:14Speaker 4: Going someplace?
- 39:15Speaker 2: Business appointment.
- 39:17Speaker 17: Oh.
- 39:18Speaker 6: Well, good night.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Good night.
- 39:21Speaker 6: What's that crash? That came from Vanjie's room. There's something wrong.
- 39:24Speaker 17: There's darkness. Darkness and flashing lights. Changing colors. Shifting designs.
- 39:40Speaker 17: Noises that are somehow recognizable to human voices.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Vanjie.
- 39:47Speaker 14: Have a blanket.
- 39:48Speaker 6: You're quite a killer.
- 39:49Speaker 9: Always a danger of pneumonia.
- 39:51Speaker 6: He's a murderer.
- 39:51Speaker 13: Listen to me.
- 39:52Speaker 19: I know.
- 39:53Speaker 6: He's a murderer.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Vanjie.
- 39:54Speaker 14: Lots of coffee.
- 39:55Speaker 2: More coffee.
- 39:56Speaker 10: Kill her.
- 39:57Speaker 20: Blanket.
- 39:58Speaker 6: Murder.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Coffee.
- 39:59Speaker 7: Murder.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Vanjie.
- 40:00Speaker 6: Murder.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Vanjie. Vanjie.
- 40:03Speaker 6: Oh, Harry.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Vanjie.
- 40:09Speaker 10: Oh, Harry.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Good morning, Angel.
- 40:12Speaker 6: Oh, Harry.
- 40:15Speaker 2: It's been a tough night, but you came through it
- 40:17Speaker 2: as good as new. Last night I wanted to shoot myself.
- 40:21Speaker 2: It's all my fault.
- 40:22Speaker 6: No. No, it's not. Don't say that.
- 40:26Speaker 2: I thought I connected the heater fine, but something must
- 40:29Speaker 2: have happened. Maybe I kicked the pipe. I don't know.
- 40:33Speaker 17: Harry.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Angie. Listen to me before they come back in. They
- 40:40Speaker 2: may say things about me. Your aunt's got some weird
- 40:43Speaker 2: ideas about what happened. Don't listen to them, Angie. Don't
- 40:46Speaker 2: listen to them.
- 40:48Speaker 9: I won't, Harry.
- 40:49Speaker 2: I love you, Angel. That's all that matters, isn't it?
- 40:54Speaker 6: Yes. Yes, that's all that matters.
- 40:58Speaker 2: What's wrong?
- 41:00Speaker 9: Nothing, Harry.
- 41:01Speaker 2: You don't believe me.
- 41:03Speaker 6: I do, Harry. I do believe you love me.
- 41:07Speaker 8: That is, I want to believe you.
- 41:12Speaker 6: I want to more than anything else in the world.
- 41:17Speaker 4: You've got to.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I will.
- 41:21Speaker 14: Are we up, or are we going to sleep some more?
- 41:24Speaker 2: She's up, Dr. Rupert. There's a lucky girl.
- 41:26Speaker 14: What a fine room for such an accident.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Big and drafty.
- 41:31Speaker 6: My poor Pookie. My poor Pookie. I'm sorry, Aunt Martha.
- 41:35Speaker 14: It's too bad you didn't knock over the bed table sooner.
- 41:38Speaker 14: But then it was soon enough, thank heavens. You should
- 41:41Speaker 14: get some sleep, Mr.
- 41:42Speaker 12: Newton.
- 41:43Speaker 2: I'll settle for a cup of coffee. And as for you, Angel,
- 41:47Speaker 2: no more trouble while I'm gone.
- 41:49Speaker 6: No.
- 41:51Speaker 2: You must reassure him, Vanjie. He's eaten with remorse.
- 41:55Speaker 6: Disappointment, you mean.
- 41:56Speaker 14: He considers the accident his fault.
- 41:58Speaker 6: Accident?
- 41:59Speaker 13: You keep calling it an accident.
- 42:01Speaker 14: Your auntie, Vanjie, is very disturbed and full of wild theories.
- 42:05Speaker 6: There's no need to theorize.
- 42:08Speaker 2: Oh?
- 42:08Speaker 6: Oh, the blame is all mine.
- 42:11Speaker 8: I got up to get some water, yes, and the
- 42:15Speaker 8: sleeping pill made me croggy. I must have stumbled on
- 42:19Speaker 8: the gas hose and pulled it out without realizing it.
- 42:24Speaker 6: I'm always doing things like that.
- 42:26Speaker 14: Yes, you are, as long as I've known you. You know,
- 42:30Speaker 14: there are those of us who go through life with
- 42:32Speaker 14: a predisposition toward having accidents. We actually will them to happen.
- 42:38Speaker 14: We who are thus disposed live closer to the edge
- 42:41Speaker 14: of time than others. We walk in front of moving cars.
- 42:45Speaker 6: We fall from high places.
- 42:46Speaker 14: We are bitten by snakes and sucked in by riptides.
- 42:50Speaker 14: If there's poison oak, we will find it. If there
- 42:53Speaker 14: are live wires, we will touch them. We are wedded
- 42:56Speaker 14: to calamity.
- 42:57Speaker 13: We are indeed wedded to calamity indeed.
- 43:01Speaker 6: You may discount the other nonsense and be sure of
- 43:03Speaker 6: the last.
- 43:10Speaker 8: Wedded to calamity no no i mustn't listen to such
- 43:16Speaker 8: things i mustn't think such things how could i when
- 43:21Speaker 8: i saw the genuine concern the.
- 43:24Speaker 6: Fright in his face when i heard the love in his.
- 43:27Speaker 8: Voice in those days when i lay resting from my
- 43:32Speaker 8: narrow escape he was.
- 43:34Speaker 6: Sweet Sweet enough to convince me I wasn't alone. Not really.
- 43:40Speaker 6: Not even when he was away in San Francisco on business. Hello? Oh, darling. Oh, darling,
- 43:50Speaker 6: I've missed you. San Francisco might as well be on
- 43:54Speaker 6: the other side of the world. Oh, no, darling, come
- 43:57Speaker 6: home tonight. Well, then try to.
- 44:02Speaker 9: Oh, please, Harry.
- 44:03Speaker 6: What? What? Unto eternity. Oh, yes, darling.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Yes.
- 44:12Speaker 6: I love you. Unto eternity. Yes, darling. Yes. Goodbye.
- 44:26Speaker 8: But suddenly, I was feeling alone again. Unto eternity, he said.
- 44:34Speaker 6: What did he mean? Eternity? The word made me shudder. Hello.
- 44:45Speaker 4: Hello, Vanjie. You don't seem to recognize me. I'm Lenny Walden.
- 44:51Speaker 4: Grace's friend.
- 44:52Speaker 6: Oh, yes. Yes, of course. Won't you come in?
- 44:55Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Grace isn't here?
- 44:59Speaker 6: No.
- 45:00Speaker 4: I didn't really expect her to be. I just thought that.
- 45:03Speaker 6: You two haven't quarreled, have you?
- 45:05Speaker 4: No, we're... Well, yes, I guess so.
- 45:09Speaker 6: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Well, it was my fault.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Jealous.
- 45:13Speaker 4: I'm in love with Grace, you know.
- 45:14Speaker 6: I know.
- 45:16Speaker 4: Well, I won't bother you anymore with my problems.
- 45:19Speaker 6: Do you care to tell me just what or who
- 45:23Speaker 6: you're jealous of?
- 45:26Speaker 4: I'd rather not.
- 45:28Speaker 6: Then may I guess you're jealous of my husband? Well,
- 45:34Speaker 6: don't be. My husband is very much in love with me.
- 45:38Speaker 8: If anything, he merely tolerates the way Grace tags along
- 45:41Speaker 8: after him and putters in real estate.
- 45:43Speaker 4: I guess you're right, Mrs.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Newton.
- 45:45Speaker 19: It's just that when I saw them dancing... Dancing? Well,
- 45:48Speaker 19: Grace didn't even tell me she was in town. Somebody
- 45:50Speaker 19: saw them at the band box and called me. I
- 45:53Speaker 19: guess I was steamed up and anxious to jump at conclusions.
- 45:56Speaker 4: I'm an idiot.
- 45:58Speaker 6: Not at all. Just a little hasty.
- 46:01Speaker 4: I've got to hand it to you, Vanjie. You're a
- 46:04Speaker 4: lot more broad-minded than I am. I envy you.
- 46:12Speaker 6: Envy me? Envy me? When I was so alone and frightened.
- 46:18Speaker 6: When he'd gone, I went upstairs to our room.
- 46:22Speaker 8: Frantically, I looked through his luggage, went through his clothes, searching,
- 46:25Speaker 8: searching for some clue, some clue to the man I married.
- 46:28Speaker 6: There was none. Nothing. And I had to know... Now
- 46:34Speaker 6: I had to know. Long distance. Give me the Hotel Grosvenor,
- 46:40Speaker 6: San Francisco. Thank you. Oh, I had to know. I
- 46:45Speaker 6: had to talk to him, ask him to come home,
- 46:47Speaker 6: or go to him, anything, anything.
- 46:51Speaker 5: Grosvenor?
- 46:52Speaker 6: Oh, Mr. Newton, please. Room 724. One moment.
- 46:56Speaker 2: Hello?
- 47:00Speaker 12: Hello?
- 47:02Speaker 1: Hello?
- 47:03Speaker 12: Who is this?
- 47:15Speaker 6: It was Grace's voice. Without the slightest doubt. I ran
- 47:21Speaker 6: out to my car.
- 47:24Speaker 8: Grace had answered that telephone in Harry's room.
- 47:28Speaker 6: And I knew.
- 47:29Speaker 8: Now I was sure of it all. Harry had killed Susie.
- 47:34Speaker 8: Whether it had been suicide or murder, he'd killed her.
- 47:37Speaker 8: And in the same way, he would kill me.
- 47:41Speaker 4: Hey, hey, look at that.
- 47:42Speaker 2: That car better slow down for that turn.
- 47:45Speaker 9: Hey, look!
- 47:59Speaker 5: You see, the sequence of events comes to full circle.
- 48:03Speaker 5: It started with an automobile accident. Was it going to
- 48:06Speaker 5: end with another one? At least this was one they
- 48:09Speaker 5: couldn't blame on Harry Newton. Vanjie simply drove too fast,
- 48:14Speaker 5: tried to take a shortcut to San Francisco through a tree,
- 48:17Speaker 5: rushing to her husband. In the end, he had to
- 48:20Speaker 5: rush to the emergency hospital to her. But she was
- 48:24Speaker 5: all right.
- 48:27Speaker 8: The indestructible Vanjie.
- 48:29Speaker 6: Perennial accident case. Always smelling of antiseptics and painted with iodine.
- 48:35Speaker 8: I lay there between hospital sheets, pretending that the hypodermic
- 48:39Speaker 8: needle had put me to sleep.
- 48:41Speaker 6: But I was listening to Dr. Rupert as he talked
- 48:44Speaker 6: to Harry and Aunt Martha.
- 48:46Speaker 14: The night of your wife's first unfortunate experience, I had
- 48:49Speaker 14: a vague suspicion that the circumstances were not entirely accidental.
- 48:54Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 48:55Speaker 14: Banji has twice tried.
- 48:57Speaker 6: To take her own life. I don't believe it. It's true.
- 49:00Speaker 14: For people like Vanjie, it is sometimes harder to find
- 49:03Speaker 14: the dividing point between accident and suicide. There's a certain
- 49:07Speaker 14: will to die, a subconscious compulsion which invites disaster.
- 49:11Speaker 6: It's nonsense.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Go on.
- 49:13Speaker 14: In the matter of the gas heater, Vanjie said herself
- 49:15Speaker 14: she pulled the flexible pipe by accident. Was that accident
- 49:20Speaker 14: or intention?
- 49:21Speaker 13: I don't believe she ever did it. It was he
- 49:23Speaker 13: who really pulled the cord.
- 49:24Speaker 14: No, I think it was Vanjie. She invited disaster again tonight,
- 49:28Speaker 14: driving a car off the road at high speed.
- 49:31Speaker 6: Was it accident?
- 49:32Speaker 14: But did she suddenly cease to care whether the car
- 49:34Speaker 14: made that curve or not?
- 49:35Speaker 6: Or did somebody tamper with a steering wheel on her car?
- 49:38Speaker 2: You'd better stop that, Andy. Please, Martha.
- 49:41Speaker 14: You'll know too that the tendency seems to run in
- 49:43Speaker 14: her family. Her father stepped in front of a moving car.
- 49:46Speaker 6: How do we know even that?
- 49:48Speaker 14: And Susie leaped to her death off a cliff.
- 49:49Speaker 4: Or was pushed.
- 49:50Speaker 14: Times Vangie was drawn to self-destruction were times of mental depression.
- 49:55Speaker 4: We've got to work to save her.
- 49:57Speaker 2: I'll do anything, Doctor. Anything you say.
- 50:00Speaker 14: There'll be a lot for you to do.
- 50:03Speaker 6: You have it all figured out, haven't you, Dr.
- 50:05Speaker 4: Rupert?
- 50:06Speaker 6: And you're right, of course. Except for that about mental depressions.
- 50:10Speaker 6: That's not what causes it. It's the fear. Fear of
- 50:14Speaker 6: being alone. Of not being loved. Of not being loved
- 50:18Speaker 6: by Harry Newton. I heard what he said. He'd do anything.
- 50:22Speaker 9: Anything.
- 50:23Speaker 6: But he didn't fool me. I know he wants Grace.
- 50:27Speaker 6: I'm in his way. I know.
- 50:29Speaker 7: They're gone now.
- 50:33Speaker 6: Oh, it's stifling in here. So close.
- 50:37Speaker 9: I must have some air.
- 50:40Speaker 7: That's better.
- 50:46Speaker 6: Now, there was a little razor sharp blade here a
- 50:50Speaker 6: little while ago. They used it to make a blood test. Oh,
- 50:55Speaker 6: but it's gone. No matter. In the lavatory, just off
- 51:01Speaker 6: my room. There'll be a drinking glass. If I can
- 51:05Speaker 6: break that without too much noise. Glass cuts. Yes. Glass.
- 51:14Speaker 2: Oh.
- 51:15Speaker 9: What is it, nurse?
- 51:16Speaker 6: What's happened? It's Newton. She's gone out that window. Well,
- 51:19Speaker 6: stop her. Stop her.
- 51:20Speaker 2: She can't have gone far.
- 51:22Speaker 14: Notify the highway patrol and tell Mr.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Newton.
- 51:24Speaker 7: Yes, doctor.
- 51:25Speaker 14: We've got to find her to protect her from herself.
- 51:28Speaker 6: And from him. What?
- 51:29Speaker 13: Don't you see? You've given Harry Newton the soundest alibi
- 51:33Speaker 13: in the world. Your assurance that Danji is bent on suicide.
- 51:40Speaker 6: What did Aunt Martha mean by that? The soundest alibi.
- 51:44Speaker 6: I don't matter. pressed close to the bathroom wall with
- 51:47Speaker 6: one shoulder tucked in the corner. They didn't think to
- 51:50Speaker 6: look there, but someone was bound to soon.
- 51:55Speaker 8: Della Vista, that was it. If I was going to die,
- 51:58Speaker 8: I wanted to go home to die. I waited till
- 52:03Speaker 8: my room was.
- 52:03Speaker 6: Empty again, then I went to the open window.
- 52:06Speaker 9: If I could get to my car.
- 52:21Speaker 6: Yes, home. Yes, it was right. It was right to
- 52:27Speaker 6: come home. It was going on morning, but it was
- 52:32Speaker 6: still dark. The house was pitch black. I went inside.
- 52:39Speaker 6: There was a telephone. A stray ray of moonlight shone
- 52:43Speaker 6: in it. I could see it plainly. And I remembered...
- 52:50Speaker 6: And to eternity.
- 52:53Speaker 2: To have and to hold until death do us part.
- 52:57Speaker 3: With this ring I thee wed.
- 53:00Speaker 2: This ring and three passes at a crap table.
- 53:07Speaker 6: I went upstairs. My room was cold, dark. One of
- 53:12Speaker 6: his shirts was still on the floor where I'd thrown
- 53:15Speaker 6: it in my frantic search of his things. It was
- 53:19Speaker 6: a sports shirt.
- 53:20Speaker 20: He said he wouldn't need a sports shirt in San Francisco.
- 53:26Speaker 6: I hung it up in the closet. The room was
- 53:29Speaker 6: in order otherwise. There was water by my bed and
- 53:33Speaker 6: the sleeping pills. I emptied the bottle into my hand
- 53:37Speaker 6: and counted them. One, two, three, four. Not enough. I
- 53:46Speaker 6: said it louder. The words boomed in silence. Such silence.
- 53:53Speaker 6: Not a sound. Not even the stirring of Pookie in
- 53:57Speaker 6: her cage.
- 53:59Speaker 8: I looked toward the empty cage and shuddered in a
- 54:03Speaker 8: sudden chill.
- 54:05Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
- 54:06Speaker 8: There was the gas heater close by. I crossed over
- 54:10Speaker 8: to it quickly, kneeled down and turned on the gas.
- 54:15Speaker 8: Get a blanket.
- 54:16Speaker 6: It's murder.
- 54:17Speaker 10: Coffee.
- 54:18Speaker 7: More coffee.
- 54:18Speaker 6: Kill her.
- 54:19Speaker 12: Danger.
- 54:20Speaker 2: Blanket.
- 54:20Speaker 15: Murder.
- 54:21Speaker 17: Kill her.
- 54:26Speaker 8: I held the match to the heater and watched it
- 54:28Speaker 8: flare up warm and alive. I was beginning to enjoy
- 54:33Speaker 8: my borrowed time.
- 54:38Speaker 6: That was Harry. Suddenly, in a burst of panic, I
- 54:42Speaker 6: knew what unbothered meant. Dr. Rupert had given him the
- 54:46Speaker 6: soundest alibi in the world. The assurance I was going
- 54:49Speaker 6: to commit suicide. He'd come to make sure I didn't
- 54:53Speaker 6: change my mind. It was dark.
- 54:56Speaker 8: I could barely make out the shadowy bulk of him.
- 55:00Speaker 8: As he looked at the car, I'd come in. Then
- 55:04Speaker 8: he entered the house, walking past.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Vanjie! Vanjie, I know you're here.
- 55:13Speaker 14: Vanjie!
- 55:14Speaker 6: Vanjie! I had to have time to think. I had
- 55:17Speaker 6: to think out what it all meant.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Angie, come here. I want to talk to you.
- 55:23Speaker 9: Oh, but I couldn't think.
- 55:25Speaker 6: The sound of his voice frightened me.
- 55:28Speaker 9: All at once I felt terribly depressed.
- 55:32Speaker 6: The boat was sinking. The sides were caving in.
- 55:37Speaker 8: All I wanted was to get off. I slipped down
- 55:41Speaker 8: the stairs outside. through the rose garden, to the tea house.
- 55:50Speaker 6: The night was turning milky. Vision was lengthening by the moment.
- 55:57Speaker 20: I couldn't see the surf directly below me, but I
- 56:01Speaker 20: could hear it. I thought of Susie, and I leaned
- 56:08Speaker 20: on the rail above the retaining wall. And then, Then
- 56:14Speaker 20: I heard his footsteps approaching through the rose garden, through
- 56:19Speaker 20: the morning mist.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Good morning, Angel. Not talking this morning, Mrs.
- 56:25Speaker 14: Newton?
- 56:27Speaker 2: I can't see you, but I know you're there.
- 56:29Speaker 6: Don't come any closer.
- 56:31Speaker 2: Is your hand on the rail, Angel? Are you poised
- 56:34Speaker 2: and ready? Or are you hoping for a reprieve? Something
- 56:38Speaker 2: I'll say that will turn despair to ecstasy.
- 56:41Speaker 6: Don't come any closer, Harry. I mean it. I'll jump.
- 56:46Speaker 2: And what's holding you back? A thread? A lingering hope?
- 56:49Speaker 6: Yes.
- 56:50Speaker 2: That I love you?
- 56:51Speaker 14: Yes.
- 56:51Speaker 2: That I don't love Grace?
- 56:52Speaker 6: Yes. So that's it. You know it is. Perry. What?
- 56:59Speaker 6: Have you come to kill me? No. You have a
- 57:03Speaker 6: perfect alibi. Dr. Rupert said I was a potential suicide.
- 57:07Speaker 12: I know.
- 57:09Speaker 8: If you push me off under the rocks below.
- 57:12Speaker 6: As you pushed Susie. Because you were through with her.
- 57:16Speaker 6: It'll be just as perfect a crime. An obvious suicide.
- 57:19Speaker 2: But Burghardt's wife spoke to you.
- 57:21Speaker 6: Yes.
- 57:22Speaker 2: She could have been lying.
- 57:23Speaker 6: I know.
- 57:23Speaker 2: And you called my hotel last night, didn't you? And
- 57:26Speaker 2: when Grace answered, you hung up. I figured that out
- 57:28Speaker 2: and called you back with a beautiful explanation ready. That
- 57:31Speaker 2: I'd gotten Lenny Walden and Grace together to patch up
- 57:33Speaker 2: their differences.
- 57:34Speaker 6: You're lying, Harry.
- 57:35Speaker 2: If you think so, why don't you jump in?
- 57:37Speaker 17: I will.
- 57:37Speaker 6: I won't let you push me.
- 57:39Speaker 2: I'm not going to push you.
- 57:40Speaker 6: How do I know?
- 57:41Speaker 2: You don't. The act and the proof are both one.
- 57:45Speaker 2: If I push you, I must want you dead. If
- 57:47Speaker 2: I don't push you, I must want you alive. Isn't
- 57:49Speaker 2: that so?
- 57:50Speaker 6: Yes.
- 57:51Speaker 2: You have to stand there and wait for the proof.
- 57:54Speaker 6: Harry, don't!
- 57:56Speaker 2: Jump if you want to, but I assure you, Vanjie,
- 57:57Speaker 2: the proof is worth the anguish. This is it. Irene
- 58:01Speaker 2: Burghardt was lying or she wasn't lying. I killed Susie
- 58:03Speaker 2: or I didn't. I want you or I don't want you.
- 58:06Speaker 2: Total proof. Clear, concise, and quick. Harry....
- 58:12Speaker 7: Don't!
- 58:13Speaker 6: If you come any closer, I'll.
- 58:17Speaker 7: Jump!
- 58:25Speaker 14: Darling.
- 58:27Speaker 2: Darling, I've got to help you. That's all that matters.
- 58:33Speaker 2: Everything I said was true. It's easily proved.
- 58:40Speaker 6: This is all the proof a woman would want.
- 58:45Speaker 4: To have and to hold from this day forward.
- 58:51Speaker 6: Hold me, Harry.
- 58:54Speaker 2: I will.
- 59:16Speaker 5: Our grateful thanks to Robert Ryan and Ruth Warwick. You

- 59:54Speaker 5: and unseen, an element we call suspense.
