- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: What's up everybody and welcome to another episode of Scouting the Fans, right here on the 3-Artsprecary podcast feed, also part of the five reason sports network before we get into today's show.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_01]: if you have not already, go ahead and sign up for only fits.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: Go to discord.gg slash, only fits.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: Make sure you join on a desktop or a laptop.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_01]: You want to avoid the Apple upcharge on the iPhone or I'll charge you by an extra dollar.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_01]: $299 to read only what Chris
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: Kaufman, Alfred Ortsjaga, and Simon Clancy, say 499 per month for all access where myself coach locked on Dolphin's host Kyle Crabbs.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: Simon, CK, and Alf all give her unfiltered Dolphin's opinion and news on only Finns.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: If you guys were on only Finns, you would also have known the Dolphin's just signed.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: running back Devon Hain to a four year contract extension coach for your extension worth $68 million, making him the third highest paid running back at $17 million, a year with 32 million in guaranteed.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I thought it was a great deal for the dolphins.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, we have to, you know, this was just announced what 30 minutes ago is
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: But when you talk about the timing of it, letting the breeze haul contract kind of set the floor for it, getting it done before their Jamir Gives and the Bijan Robinson contracts.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: And getting it done with a four-year deal.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's a lot of stuff to like about this for the dolphins.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of expected it to be closer to 20 million.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: So for it to come in at 17 million seems like they're, making a good move here, getting this contract done fairly early.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: and keep in a star player around here for a while hopefully.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that are getting ahead of the running back contract market.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, you know, Bruce Hall was heel free.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: I believe he was a first run draft pick.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm not mistaken, maybe second round.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you, second one.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: I think he was second round.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: To mirror Gibbs was the first run draft picks.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: So I think his contract will be a little bit more just based off his draft positioning.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen first run draft picks.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_01]: draft fix as well.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_01]: Devonation was more so a second run draft pick by has brought tremendous tremendous playing value to the Miami Dolphins.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: Almost almost half of his contract is guaranteed.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like 48, 49% of his contract is guaranteed.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: My opinion is it looks like it'll be a front-loaded contract instead of a back-loaded contract to give him the money up front and then maybe later on in
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: What the dolphins trajectory is, if they want to sell them off for an asset or two or maybe they just don't see or maybe his value declines or his play declines, God forbid, you know, I hope it doesn't.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's a phenomenal contra approach.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he ranks first in EPA, first in yards per carry, seventh in success rate, 11th in rushing yards.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: a minimum filter of 300 rush times.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's phenomenal, phenomenal for Devon Hain.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, he's been a fantastic player, best, one of the best weapons in the entire NFL.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: I do expect a front-loaded contract like you were saying.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: As I said before, I was kind of surprised at the four-year extension because when you added on to the year that he has left on his contract now,
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: that four years would take him through his age 29 season, which, you know, that running backs typically fall off a cliff, especially in terms of the contracts they're given after that age 30 or even earlier for running backs.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: So my expectation for this contract is that you're going to see a big signing bonus.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: So he's going to give his money in 2026 and that we're going to see a
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: And then probably 2028 or 2029, you're going to be looking at, you know, some sort of restructuring, even though it's a four year deal, I would be surprised of this contract stays the way it is through 2030.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: Some final Miami Dolphins news, it sounds like the Dolphins will play, will have a home opener of against the New York Jets week one.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's unconfirmed.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: But in New York Radio, the ESPN New York Radio station is saying it's going to be Jets at Dolphins week one.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: I'll free to our Tugaset in our three-hour supercarry.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: If the Dolphins win against the Jets week one, you might have a chance of rattling off five to six wins.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: And if they
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: I just saw something else come across.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: It says Miami Dolphins are set to visit Las Vegas in week one.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: So again, unconfirmed reports.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: So again, imagine Fernando's Fernández's first game at home against his hometown NFL club, the Miami Dolphins.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: So it's either the Jets, the Raiders who we just don't know yet.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: And again, back to the Jets.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: If the Dolphins do lose it, I've
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: Then your potential and territory of, uh, uh, is the archmaning or bust, uh, right?
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: Then they're especially losing up against the New York judge.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: But the Raiders, a little bit different story.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: They have a decent enough team, a rookie quarterback, uh, going up against it.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then a full defense for the first time.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_01]: We don't know what that offense will look like with Clint Kubiak at the home as the head coach.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: So we will see.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: But for now, today's episode.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk about the two top defenders, the Miami Dolphins drafted in the first and second round in Chris Johnson and Jacob Rodriguez.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: Coach, Chris Johnson, Dolphins traded up from 30 to 27, gave San Francisco the 90th pick, got back the 138th.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: played corner-backed and wide receiver in high school, played all of his career college career at San Diego State University.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's got to mean something to John Eric Slovitt and the Miami Dolphins organization.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think so.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you go back to a three-star recruit going to San Diego State.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: 2023 was a special team's player of the year.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Wasn't starting that season.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Busted into the starting line up in 2024 had a really good season, and he came out and said that he had plenty of NIL offers to go play somewhere else, but then in 2025, he decided to return he wanted to continue to build on what they were doing at San Diego State.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: So that level of loyalty, that level of wanting to continue to build what they were generating there.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: That really did have to resonate with John Erick Sullivan, and that's very good player
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: But when you talk about the off-the-field stuff, you listen to the kit talk, you watch the physicality that you place with all of that stuff like you can see why this staff really liked him in addition to the skills that you bring to the field.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, four pegs, two returns for touchdowns, 146 interception returning yards, which was most in the entire country in 2025, a 16.1 pass rating allowed a lead for any level of college football.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: 47 out of 50 games he's played at San Diego State, 152 tackles, six picks, 20 passes defended and five force fumble.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_01]: But the big question was, can he run?
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: Does he have a lead speed?
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: And look, the combine changed everything for him that cemented him into first round church status.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_01]: He had a great technique, good production.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: But again, the question was, could he actually run?
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: 4.440, 1.5 or 10 yards split, 38 inch vertical, 93rd percentile RA as recorded back with the 9.67 relative athletic score.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think the group of five speed question was answered, especially at the combine.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: It showed that he had the hip fluidity.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: his technique was elite with his speed.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: He's able to read releases pretty well.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: He's able to mirror wide receivers and sometimes run routes for opposing wide receivers, even though he played up against group of five type of wide receivers.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: And the big question will be, can you do that up against guys like Cooper Cup, against Stefan Diggs, a key on Coleman, Garrett Wilson, those kinds of players in the AFC?
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I had the same question going into the, into the draft.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: When I watched Chris Johnson, I really liked the film, the notes that I had on him like a question, whether or not he could even transition to safety because of the physicality because of the ability to play in the nickel, you know, can do all that stuff.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason that I kind of questioned the safety thing was because I wasn't sure about the long speed, but like you said, when he went to the combine and he goes and
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: then you kind of get rid of that.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: He's had plenty of production at the college level, a 16.1 pass rating allowed in 2025.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like, yeah, the competition may be a question that you can ask, but even if it's not a 16.1, like that's still gonna be good, even against better competition.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we talk about his scheme versatility,
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: not only play zone and man, but also to play on the boundary of already heard the coaching staff talk about him playing in the slot as well, talking about his physicality, how he plays with heavy hands up on the line of scrimmage, all that stuff, like this is a very well-rounded player that the dolphins are getting.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they mentioned about him playing nickel.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: You
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: in the nickel in 2025 and even 2024 when I went back to it, it was less than 10 snaps from what I could find on film.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: Now, look if Jeff has to be saying he can do both, he can do both.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: It gives Jeff halfway the deployment flexibility for his defensive back room and his man coverage ceiling went up considerably, especially
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: with running at 4.4, 40 and a 1.5 for 10 yards split.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: He's a zone first guy off coverage type of guy.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_01]: He can press a little bit but not super duper much.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think there'll be playing so much press this season given that the dolphins don't have an actual viable pass rush.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: So they need to make sure they have that safety net there.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: Now
- 11:41[SPEAKER_01]: can, again, Kenny handle NFL level, sophistication when I posted my film break just a little bit of a clip of him against Washington State.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: There was a route, it was more so of like a post route, which was being ran.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: Johnson was really in the quarterback's eyes.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_01]: He closed in a little bit, but the quarterback threw the ball a little bit under where Chris Johnson was able to make a play on the ball.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: Now, if that's an NFL QB,
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: Nine times out of ten it's going to be a good to great ball and Johnson's going to have to have much faster speed.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to have to really run in mirror.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: His hips have to be even more fluid and he can't really bite on fakes.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_01]: He can't really bite on bricks either.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like
- 12:34[SPEAKER_01]: he has to have his timings down.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: He has to have that recovery speed even faster than what he ran at the combine.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, his first real test could come at the hands of Garrett Wilson, right?
- 12:49[SPEAKER_01]: I guess the New York Jets or it could come up against for the Raiders as well.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_01]: I forgot whether why receiver one is kind of blanking on it, but he's definitely going to have a test
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, agree like in that that's going to be it's going to be interesting to see how that transition goes.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think that, you know, this is a player that might have a bit of a transition right going from San Diego State University to the NFL.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: So having.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: whoever it is, right?
- 13:22[SPEAKER_00]: I almost hope it is that Jets Week wanted his Garrett Wilson week one, because I'd really like to see how he does against him week one.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: And then the second match up is probably going to happen sometime in the second half of the season.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: And to see how that growth happens throughout the season, Jeff Haffley, obviously, obviously has a defensive back background.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, you said they traded up from this is a player that they they really did want.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of had put this idea out there to a couple of people.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: I almost wonder whether Jeff Haffley liked Chris Johnson so much, that's what kind of steered them away from Caleb Downs with that higher pick, right?
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: Not that they're the same player, same position, but it would have been a kind of a hard sell to draft Caleb Downs with the number 11 pick and then turn around
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: get Chris Johnson with that second first round pick also.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, when they were looking at that and saying, you know, we want offensive line defensive back in the first round, did they decide that Caden Proctor, there's a bigger gap between Caden Proctor and whoever they could have gotten at pick 30, then there was from Caleb Downs's defensive back to Chris Johnson.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're going to be patient with him and not try to put too much on his plate, but I am really excited to see how he does early in the season with a lot of these guys on defense and watch how they grow throughout the season.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think there's going to be an adjustment period for Chris Johnson, right?
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: When you take a look at Jeff Hathley's zone structure, it's going to have a little bit of that two-high show.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: You know, earlier on in the season, we were like just right after the draft, we thought, okay, he's going to play single highlight.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be aggressive with his corns, but then really downing back, looking at the roster coach on the defensive line in the line back of room.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you got big, fast physical players, but you got these young pubs as well.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want them to be aggressive right off the bat and just get burnt easily.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's, it's going to shatter their confidence.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: Slowly, what surely you'll see these young pubs by and you want to see them by in specific situations, but not all the time, very early on, and then their confidence gets shaken.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think with the two highest structure with the cover three, the cover two and the cover six,
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: It might reduce that isolation for Chris Johnson where you don't have to leave him on an island where he can also get a little bit of safety help over the top where he can help to make plays in the run game because he sure as can can make tackles.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: Like when I watched his film and I know you did, because Anthony, I know he was on Fencepot, did his film review.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: I watched some plays where he was
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: He looked a bit undersized based off his weight, like just under 200 pounds.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: He's long, he's lengthy, he's got decent enough arms, just under 31 for a quarterback.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: I can't, like,
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: I might be a little bit off there for his arm length, but he's able to get around screens, just push the wide receivers out the way, and still make a tackle on the running back.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: He's able to get just three, four yards just into the after the line of screenage and make those tackles in the run.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's gonna be important.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: I don't expect him to play super duper off and very deep in coverage.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: five to 10 to 15 yard area, especially if it's a short, short, play-type of throw situation.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't think that this is not a guy that you want to put out there on an island, right?
- 17:21[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't early days of sauce gardener or anything like that that you're expecting to go out there and just man up on
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: another team's number one or number two receiver.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: I do expect to see a lot of zone coverage a lot of cover three type coverage is and then I think they'll get I think they'll get a little more adventurous with them.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: when they move him into the slot because he can play some of that big nickel type stuff like you talked about his physicality and then he's willing to tackle he's willing to take on blocks you know Anthony had a great series of like three consecutive plays where him and a wide receiver were just going at it play after play to the point that Chris Johnson had that or I'm sorry that was another video but same idea right he's going at he's not giving a wide receiver
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: right like there's a lot of plays that happen on the opposite side of the field in the corner and the wider receiver just kind of stand there and say okay you know it's happening over there like Chris Johnson is being physical every single play and that carries over when they will ask him to play in the slot we heard them in their media availability for the rookie mini camp and the question was about Jason Marshall Jr.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: And they, you know, they talked about him saying they want him on the boundary and they were talking about wanting their nickels to be more physical and, you know, Chris Johnson was mentioned as part of that.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I think that when he is on the boundary, I think you're going to see, you know, more of a cover three kind of protect him type deal, but when he moves there into the slot, I think you're going to see them probably using him blitzing him a little more.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that's where they put him in a little more man coverage where he can be a little more.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: physical in a little more of a condensed space stuff like that.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, hopefully, you know, it'd be a dream for one day for him to develop into that number one corner that you can just put out on an island by definitely don't think that's what we're talking about.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: It would definitely be a dream if you could become a Jalen Ransy type of player at the
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: Remember seeing a rep where it was in man coverage, a quarter fade where he got beat vertically.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the ball was overthrown.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_01]: It was incomplete for sure, but the wide receiver was able to get vertical right.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: at the right at the line, just full throttle, full speed off the line, and Chris Johnson's kickstep could not match the burst as he was going back.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_01]: It was a back shoulder throw as an accurate throw, but it came up as incomplete as a wide receiver could in the chest.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: Now, that happens in the red zone that's usually a touchdown up against Josh Allen.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: Patrick Mahomes, maybe Bonix, Justin Herbert, a long, a long list of those guys, even Drake mate in New England, right?
- 20:23[SPEAKER_01]: If Mountain was quarterback's
- 20:28[SPEAKER_01]: are throwing that ball 50-50% of the time, and if OQBs are doing it 90-10% of the time, I think that they're going to have to prioritize during the rookie mini camp and the OTAs getting off the line, making sure you're able to press, but also make sure you're able to mirror you're able to match and you're able to recover.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: Again, it's one of the things.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's where as you're going through mini camp, as you're going through OTAs,
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: a big part of a lot of these guys including Chris Johnson they've brought in is the football intelligence that these guys have an understanding where your help is and understanding when you can be more aggressive and when you have to dial it back.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: So like in a situation like you were talking about there, right, if you don't have the help over top, then you have to, you know,
- 21:25[SPEAKER_00]: Whereas if you, if you do have safety, if they're playing a too high shell, then you can get up there, you can be a little more physical because if you do get beat off the line, then you have to you have a safety to help keep that from being a huge play.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I think that they're again, not a perfect player.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be stuff that you're going to have to cover up with him some.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: So there's going to be a mirror, you know, a marriage of his skills versus the scheme and making sure that the scheme is not asking him to do things that he's not capable.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_00]: Well, not, not maybe not ready to do, right?
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: You have to have the skills, but just not refined enough at NFL level to carry him out.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you get that pattern match, you get the core shells, you get the two high structures.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: That's where his anticipation and proper ball production will be able to work at his full value.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_01]: That press, the press stuff, especially in the zone structures is going to protect Chris Johnson's deceleration weakness while he adjusts and builds those NFL reps early on.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_01]: I do think we'll see a little bit of that ball production that the dolphins were lacking in the last two years.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I think within a year or two and year three for Chris Johnson, if all those goals well for Jeff Hathley's defensive, the young rookies and the defensive line are able to build up a past rush.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: I think you see that deployment of Chris Johnson being an inside out versatile guy where he can adjust to all different types of route trees that wide receiver's one.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: And the three bus words I've heard throughout the dolphin's rookies in this draft class came from Chris Johnson.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: He said, I love expectations.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_01]: I definitely feel good about it on being quarterback one immediately.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: He said he feels good about it.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's not really pressure for me.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_01]: I love expectations right off the bat coach.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that is just phenomenal to hear from a rookie or a bat.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you draft the guy in round one.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: You want him to be able to put that on his shoulders.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: You want him to take accountability.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like this is a guy that understands what is being asked of him that he understands the responsibility that comes of being a first round pick understands the responsibility of likely being corner back one on a young team very much in transition.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that he has the right mental make-up.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_00]: for what we're looking for and you know him saying that he loves to have those expectations right that at this point those are words right but it's a good start and I want to see him be able to carry that over because you know at some point in camp.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_00]: a wide receiver is going to beat him at some point in the preseason, a wide receiver likely going to beat him at some point during his rookie season, he's going to have an awful game.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody is going to burn him, right?
- 24:25[SPEAKER_00]: And we got to see how he, you know, whether he likes those expectations then.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think that comes back to one of those quotes from Coach Halfley early on when he was talking about, you know, the
- 24:37[SPEAKER_00]: He's talking to these guys.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_00]: He's, you know, what they're saying in his office, but then if you're saying one thing in his office, and then you go out to the field and you're not Practicing the way that you preach, right?
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: Then he's going to call you out on that, right?
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: So this is one of those opportunities That if Chris Johnson is telling Jeff Hathley that he likes these expectations, then Hathley's going to hold him to that on the practice field on the game field and if he's not
- 25:05[SPEAKER_00]: holding up his end right then hopefully half Lee is going to challenge him.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: and get him to rise up to those expectations.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and there are high expectations for him, specifically from what John Eric Sullivan said, an NFL media interview.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_01]: He said this to the investment in Johnson.
- 25:22[SPEAKER_01]: He thinks that his ceiling is better than Dolphin's quarterback grades like Sam Addison, Pastor Tane Senior, and Xavier Howard, as well who retired from the NFL in 2025.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Chris Johnson is technically the fifth quarterback drafted in the first round for the Miami Dolphins, since Troy Vincent in 1992.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's not a lot of quarterback from 1992 to 2026.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: He's just the fifth guy you had.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: No, it wouldn't happen to me who is the one before Chris Johnson, that damn panel from Miami.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: You had
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: You had Yattel Green, was it Yattel Green?
- 26:09[SPEAKER_00]: No, he's a wide receiver.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_00]: That was a wide receiver.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: It was Jamar Fletcher who had just the debilitating injury just derailed his career from there.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_01]: not Jason Marshall.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: It was Jason Allen as well, who was drafted as a state of played outside corner as well.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_01]: Now Johnson is the fifth.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see if he has the inside out first totally early on or if he stays as a boundary corner.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: All right, what that we are going to head to break.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_01]: And we're back.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: Coach, first half of the show we talked about Devon Achain, the contract.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_01]: It looks like the dolphins are confirmed to play up against the Las Vegas Raiders week one in Vegas.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be the fourth or third PM undercard, most likely on CBS, Fernando Mendoza's first game.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: And it's going to be a chance to see what Chris Johnson has.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's also going to be a chance to see what Jacob Rodriguez has.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins 43rd pick and the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, you were sitting there and you were rattling off some of those names for the corner backs for Chris Johnson and we keep hearing the Zach Thomas comparison with Jacob Rodriguez, right?
- 27:27[SPEAKER_00]: So we're saying high expectations for Chris Johnson, but people are already calling Jacob Rodriguez, the next coming to Zach Thomas really neat to see the Zach Thomas has been a mentor for Jacob Rodriguez.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to put that that pressure on him yet, but the coaching staff,
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: has not, has it hated all to put that pressure on him.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like every opportunity they get that they are really pumping this kid up and even in the media availability for rookie OTA's, I think it was Joe Barry was talking about him and he was talking about the,
- 28:07[SPEAKER_00]: Jacob Rodriguez was a player.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: They really coveted.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't expect him to be there.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_00]: But he said he was number one on their board.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_00]: What that means, I don't know.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_00]: I can't imagine that he was number one when we were going on the board, I guess.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: Over sunny styles, like you don't lie to me like that, but maybe in the second round for sure.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they could be more realistic thing.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: But whatever it was, they didn't expect him to be there.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_00]: I think that he really
- 28:34[SPEAKER_00]: change the way the rest of the draft went for them because I think this is a player that they expected to be long gone when he was there.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think this was a player that they went in a different direction they intended.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: They said today that or maybe he's yesterday that they had they knew they had other needs and they had other positions they were looking at but when Jacob Rodriguez was still on the board then they decided this was a player that they had to have, right?
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: So the the expectations for
- 29:04[SPEAKER_00]: are very high.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that when we talked about the background of Chris Johnson, then you get a lot of similar stuff with Jacob Rodriguez, grew up or it was born in Minnesota, but moved to Texas, that's where he grew up.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_00]: played high school took his high school team to a state championship as a quarterback and safety if I remember correctly ended up committing to Virginia as a three-star recruit as so he went there as a quarterback and I think the ended up playing a bunch of different positions never really running behind the home ladder seaver type of everything but offensive line he probably would have
- 29:49[SPEAKER_01]: if they ask you to do that at six foot or six foot one as an offensive lineman.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, why not?
- 29:59[SPEAKER_00]: But there was a coaching change with Virginia.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: He ended up leaving, ended up walking on Texas Tech where there was another coaching connection there for him, moved a linebacker.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: The story was kind of written from there for him as to what happened at Texas Tech.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, but if you think about it, when he transferred a Texas tag,
- 30:25[SPEAKER_01]: Rotation of guy in 2022, 2023, list Frank Spring and Bone Ruse.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: He was limited to five game games.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: Now this is the big deal here, right?
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: For John Erick Sullivan and Jeff Haffley, a player must play two full seasons, at least even after he has an injury to make sure they're not seen as injury prone.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_01]: 2024, full time starter, big time, like first team all big 12, okay?
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: Big time improvement from 2020, 2020.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_01]: 2025, one of the greatest, one of the greatest linebacker seasons in college football history was fifth in Heisman voting as a defense player and as a linebacker.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: 120 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, four picks, seven four swumbles which was tied as the NCAA single season record.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_01]: Bronco Nagerski, Chubbinar Trek, and Lombardi O'Ware.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_01]: Unanimous First Team All-American, big 12 defensive player of the year.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, these are high, high accolades.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_01]: Go for a guy who was sleeping on the floor of his brother's apartment complex too.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: being a part of that Texas Tech to Miami Dolphins pipeline.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: Jordan Brooks, the Dolphins starting line and back right now came from Texas Tech.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_01]: Zack Thomas, all the favor from Miami came from Texas Tech, his teammate Caleb Douglas, who we'll talk about in the next episode as well.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_01]: Zack Thomas,
- 32:05[SPEAKER_01]: quote that he said, I mean, really high expectations.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_01]: He said, he's got the nougarsky, he's got the buck his.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_01]: All these awards, they should never compare him to me.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_01]: He is going to be better.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: That's how famous act Thomas said.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, again, we're, we're setting the expectations way too hard.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_00]: It was neat to hear that when Jacob Rodriguez was drafting, like you said, Jordan Brooks also went to Texas Tech and as soon as Rodriguez was drafted, Jordan Brooks hopped in this car and drove to the facility.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: So just cool to see not just the coaches being excited for a player like this, but we're
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know, making a trip to the facility when he doesn't have to at all because of Jacob Rodriguez.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_00]: You're, you know, getting an amazing quote from a Hall of Fame linebacker all time.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_00]: Dolphins great saying that he's going to be better.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, you talked about the strengths there, right?
- 33:10[SPEAKER_00]: The forced fumbles, forced in seven of him in 2025.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that shows up in his film Big Time.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_00]: you know I did the the film review on Jacob Rodriguez and I was that something I really wanted to pay attention to when I was watching because I wanted to see whether the him going after the the ball was costing him in terms of tackles and it just didn't like he he was
- 33:42[SPEAKER_01]: It was, it was not like an athleticism type or a deal, right?
- 33:47[SPEAKER_01]: It was more so like a technique, peanut telman type of thing where it actually translate because of like timing, right?
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: Then the force work, just the angling of how you're tackling or where you are.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_01]: around the ball and the big thing is coach where you are around the ball understanding angles and look he's going to understand angles as a quarterback where the ball needs to be and where the ball needs to be placed how the running back is holding the ball because he had some snaps out running back has some snaps out wide receiver and tight end he's going to know it's the mental aspect of the game that Rodriguez has that
- 34:23[SPEAKER_01]: Doesn't necessarily show up so much on film.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's more so of a subtle thing.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's more so of a football like you type of thing.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he's got a very, very high FBI coach, very, very high.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's not a physical thing.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_00]: He's not just lighting the running back up and dislodging them from the ball and stuff like that, but it's more like, you literally probably cannot go.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_00]: two or three tackles that he's making without seeing him also go after the ball, but like you said, he has a knack for being able to go after the ball and still be able to tackle simultaneously without, you know, costing him the tackles, not falling off tackles because he's just punching for the ball.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like we see, we see other players that will just come in, die for the ball, punch for the ball, and not even try to tackle.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_00]: But Rodriguez is tackling and punching for the ball at the same time.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_00]: You can see that as help arrives, a lot of times you will transition from being part of the tackle to then going to try to rip the ball out.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about ball production with Chris Johnson.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_00]: Ball production is going to be a real thing with Jacob Rodriguez also, because they talked about this with him at the senior ball as well.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_00]: That a lot of players there were impressed with his neck for being able to punch out that ball.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_00]: You know, big thing for linebackers one is you got to be a solid tackler and Jacob Rodriguez is that like even when I was watching his film, the mist tackles that he had, our hard to classify as mist tackles like there's there's some of those that, you know, he's running to the sideline and most linebackers probably don't even get a hand on the running back to be considered a mist tackle, right?
- 36:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's just you didn't get there, it almost looks better from a box
- 36:12[SPEAKER_00]: for the guy that didn't get there, or it's something that, you know, there was one play in the film review where they threw a swing pass out to a running back and there's, you know, it's running back, Rodriguez, and you've got like 15 yards of open space around him.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: That's advantage offense all day.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it might go down as a mistaq, but it's hard to blame him for not being able to do that.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, so it's just impressive to watch his ability to
- 36:38[SPEAKER_00]: consistently tackle and also to turn the ball over.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_00]: You want game changing plays out of your linebackers, but you don't want it to come at the cost.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_00]: of being a dependable tackler.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_00]: So Jacob Rodriguez, in that sense, is the perfect player that dependable tackler, but still is chasing that ball all the time like a rabbit dog.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: And there's like three plays in the film rep. We're easy able to make plays just because of his speed and his athleticism.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_01]: First one is just that force fumble.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_01]: in the big 12 championship game against BYU.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_01]: He diagnosis the running back draw to feed the block in between the tackle.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_01]: He punches and the balls he gets separated from the ball carrier and gets it before the ball even hits the ground, which was crazy to see.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_01]: The second one is a zone read run.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_01]: He takes two lateral steps to account for the running back to step.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_01]: and his path.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_01]: He reverses the direction with one step.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_01]: And if you take a look at his three cone and his shuttle drills, it was best among all linebackers at the combine.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_01]: With that reverse direction one step, he closes 12 yards on the 12, 12 that 12 yards on the quarterback and sacs the quarterback.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_01]: Not even the running way, it's the quarterback that's doing the zone
- 38:01[SPEAKER_01]: Now look, Rodriguez said the biggest change from being an offensive player to a defensive player was calling out the coverages and knowing what the coverage looks like on the back end.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_01]: Now it's hard as a linebacker because you're facing the play to your back.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_01]: You're trying to read the quarterback in front of you and you're trying to guess where the wide receiver running back or tight at is.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_01]: So your spatial awareness has to be really, really good.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_01]: He's got four picks in 2025, just from that anticipation and vision and knowing where that coverage is gonna be from playing quarterback.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_01]: That interception against Oklahoma reads the quarterback's eyes, reads John Matier's eyes.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_01]: He breaks on the hit before the ball is released.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_01]: Never even looks at the wide receiver ball is in his hand and takes.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that was his coverage was one of the things that I was kind of pleasantly surprised with.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_00]: You see, we've seen a lot of linebackers
- 39:00[SPEAKER_00]: awful in coverage for the dolphins over the years.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of times in zone coverage, you find those linebackers, you know, they'll step up for a play fake and then next thing, you know, they're running back into his own coverage.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_00]: And they're covering a patch of grass where there's no wider silver in the area.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_00]: So when I watched
- 39:20[SPEAKER_00]: Jacob Rodriguez.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: It was refreshing to watch him.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_00]: You know, yes, he has to step up on the play action.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: But once he read past his eyes were getting around his eyes are finding the receiver.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_00]: His eyes are getting back to his zone, but they're also attaching to a receiver.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, we're saying a lot of great things about him.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_00]: Everything we said right sounds like he should be the next exact Thomas.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he did go in the second round for a reason, and part of that is that size.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think when I did the comparison of the six foot one, the 230, when you put those two things together, there's only a handful of linebackers in the NFL that meet both of those criteria.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_00]: So this is a kind of an unusually small line back or almost looks more safety like in a lot of ways.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_00]: So one of the things that, I mean, it's a concern, but it didn't show up as much of a concern as I expected it to be, was Rodriguez's ability to shed blocks.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_00]: And it actually does a surprisingly good job for his size of not staying blocked.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_00]: They've been able to ricochet off blocks,
- 40:37[SPEAKER_00]: You will have the occasional play that you'll get engulfed by an offensive lineman, but you can say that about almost any linebacker in the NFL, like even the bigger linebackers at the time.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_00]: You get an office of lime and up there, you know, 330 pound guard, and they're going to have trouble taking out.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_01]: 100 pounds on you is 100 pounds on you, right?
- 40:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be tough.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_01]: But he's going to get that practice against Patrick Paul.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to get that practice against Kate and Proctor as well, that just on the sides, on the zone reads, those wide zone reads, he's going to get that practice, trying to run around them, trying to
- 41:12[SPEAKER_01]: get those blocks shed it and the thing is it can be coachable coach but it takes like a full NFL offseason in the rate room.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_01]: The reps throughout the game and by year two, year three should have a good semblance of what he needs to do and you talk about those missed tackles.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 41:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's more so of an over-commitment type of thing, right?
- 41:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like he's using his full speed to get there to the sideline, just barely not even getting his hands on the running, but he's like short by like an inch or two.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's not a technique thing.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's just can't get there and some linebackers just can't get there.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: He has the sideline speed that those missed tackles show
- 41:56[SPEAKER_01]: There's another linebacker out there, DeMario Davis, who had the same or similar profile entering the league.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_01]: He has the speed, six to a bit on her side has one more inch on Jacob Rodriguez could get there in a pinch, but was just an inch or two short from making that top.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think to an extent it is cultural, but I think it's also, I think it's going to be
- 42:24[SPEAKER_00]: there in a way all the time because part of what makes similar to the tackle idea right the the over aggression with the tackle at times.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_00]: That also shows up in the way that he ricochets off of blocks the way that he dips around the blocks you know we're talking about.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_00]: a bigger linebacker, right, let's, you know, Ray Lewis, we'll take some low hanging fruit there, right?
- 42:49[SPEAKER_00]: That's somebody that can, you know, if a guard is climbing on a door and inside zone, a bigger linebacker can take on that guard and can, you know, peak stack shed whereas somebody like Jacob Rodriguez is never going to be able to do that effectively.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to have to pick aside, right?
- 43:08[SPEAKER_00]: And when you have to pick aside,
- 43:13[SPEAKER_01]: So if you know, but the way half these defensive line is going to be, it's not like they're asking the linebackers to sift through and go into the gap, take on those guard.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's going to be
- 43:29[SPEAKER_01]: The three techs is going to be the five techs, clogging up those lanes in the run game, making sure you know, the holes are covered up and they're running back has to find the open hole.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_01]: And then linebackers like Jordan Brooks and Jacob Rodriguez, maybe Kyle Lewis, as well, Willie Gay, whatever is that they're in linebacker or other linebackers on the field.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_01]: they go and clog up those open holes and make the tackle on the road.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_01]: That's what's going to be asked out of Jacob Rodriguez and in the lineback of crew.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: You can't ask him and Jordan Brooks to take on guards, a hundred, a hundred and twenty pounds over Rodriguez and Jordan Brooks.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that was the point that I was getting to like, oh, he's been back.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: You're good, you're good because we're going in the same direction here.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_00]: But like if you can get him towards that Zack Thomas type scheme, like think about what the dolphins used to have, right?
- 44:23[SPEAKER_00]: You had Tim bones, you had Darrell Gardner, you know, and then you had,
- 44:27[SPEAKER_00]: four, three defensive ends that were filling, funneling everything to the inside.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_00]: So you were keep in Zach Thomas clean and you were funneling everything inside the box.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, obviously we're not going to have those type of defensive tackle.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that's a deep concern to me.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get from the ring.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because they don't have the length of four, three's the edge rushers that mine me has, they don't have the length.
- 44:49[SPEAKER_01]: for it.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_01]: Now, if you're saying that, okay, the dolphins drafted a guy like Keldrick Folk in the first round, traded back a little bit more, and then have trade Johnson and Jacob Rodriguez, then I would get it.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_01]: Like, obviously Timbo's not the same, like Kenneth Grant is not the same thing as Timbo, but you have Zack Seeler, who can be just a little bit similar, doesn't have the same weight, but has the technique and athleticism that can make them happen.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_01]: But then you get to, you also have Zeke Biggers as well.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_01]: You have a couple of other defensive edge rushers that can play as stand up defensive linemen and clog up those holes.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_01]: You can move Zack sealer to the right side or left side and kind of see where the tendency of the run will go and move and shift the linebackers through there.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's going to be a, they're going to play around with the defensive line in the makeup of it.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I think that the difference that I see versus the Zach Thomas type defense, where you had a couple of space theaters and then you were letting Zach Thomas kind of navigate around them.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think that you're going to see a little more aggressive one gaping from the dolphins with your guys like Kenneth Grant Zach's sealer that they're going to be getting up field more, but when you do that, then you also kind of
- 46:07[SPEAKER_00]: make it more predictable and you have somebody like Jacob Rodriguez that can replay that well.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: So if you know, for example, that, let's say that to your right side, you have Kenneth Grant playing in a three technique and you know that Kenneth Grant's only job on that place to get up field, well, chances are the running back if they are running to the inside, they're going to have to cut it back to that backside.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_00]: And that's where Jacob Rodriguez and his
- 46:34[SPEAKER_00]: Again, football intelligence coming up again, that he's going to understand what that scheme is asking.
- 46:41[SPEAKER_00]: And guys like Kenneth Grant, Legs Acceler, even Jordan Brooks are going to command attention.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_00]: And that's going to be the way that Jacob Rodriguez can be kept clean.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_00]: And he can be there to clean up a lot of that stuff.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think more so it's the projection we're thinking a lot about like Zack Thomas let's
- 47:04[SPEAKER_01]: Let's just throw away the Hall of Fame comparisons, right?
- 47:08[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about the PlayStyle.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_01]: For sure, it's very similar in the terms of PlayStyle, but let's take a look at what Jacob Rodriguez will do on the field first.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's going to be that Zach Thomas model, which Jimmy Johnson first introduced where Zach Thomas was in passing situations for a said, did a little bit of research coach?
- 47:28[SPEAKER_01]: I was a kid when Zach Thomas was there like, I was an elementary school with Zach Thomas
- 47:34[SPEAKER_01]: I looked back at some of the plays and looked at the trajectory and the projections and how year-over-year exact Thomas was able to play to see the same thing for Jacob Rodriguez.
- 47:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think we're going to see Jacob Rodriguez on those passing situations first.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_01]: then slowly expand his run responsibility as the season progresses in year one as he progresses in year two and then running that same two linebacker model where within year two and year three he's got the full three down package down.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I don't I don't know if I see that the same way and the only reason I'm saying that is because the coaches have talked about Jacob Rodriguez as being a green dot
- 48:19[SPEAKER_00]: player, and that is obviously what Terrell Dodson does right now, and that's why last year staff said that Tyrell Dodson couldn't get off the field.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't, if Jacob Rodriguez was able to take that green dot from Terrell Dodson, that's not necessarily, like your green dot player is not somebody that you consider interchangeable or a spot player, so, you know, unless
- 48:49[SPEAKER_00]: If he doesn't come in and take that starting job from Torrell Dodson Dodson stays the green dot then yeah I think that you're going to find opportunities to still get Jacob Rodriguez on the field maybe that does start out as the passing downs, but I would not be surprised at all if from day one.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_00]: that Jacob Rodriguez is able to take that green dot from Carol Dodson.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_00]: He's able to be the linebacker that's on the field with Jordan Brooks all the time.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_00]: And somebody like Kyle Lewis, who we'll talk about in the future, is the player that is able to come in on passing downs.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we talked about Caitlyn Proctor.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_01]: Today's episode was about Chris Johnson and Jacob Rodriguez.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_01]: Next episode will be about the three offensive playmakers that Dolphins drafted
- 49:37[SPEAKER_01]: I would go host who some but sell with coach Smith.
