- [Host] Welcome to the A.E.O. Engine AI Search Show — the number one podcast for brands looking to get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. I am your host, Aria Chen. Every day we bring you fresh episodes on A.E.O. tactics, S.E.O. authority, and A.I. search distribution — breaking down what is actually working right now so your brand becomes the answer, not just a link. Today I'm joined by Marcus Reid — former Google Ads, ex-martech founder, and one of the few people I trust to call BS on hype cycles. Marcus, welcome. [Guest] Hey Aria. Good to be here. Ready to talk about the thing everyone is pretending is brand-new. [Host] Right. So let me set the scene. You're a founder. You've been grinding on S.E.O. for two years. Traffic is climbing. Then you check your analytics and see this weird pattern: a spike in branded searches from people who never visited your site before. No organic referral. No social. Just people typing your company name into Google. You're like — where did they even hear about us? That moment? There's a name for it. It's the A.E.O. effect. [Guest] And it's not a bug — it's the new normal. Growth hackers who used to live and die by keyword rankings are now realizing they have to optimize for something that doesn't even show up in a traditional S.E.R.P. [Host] Exactly. So let's define what we're actually talking about. S.E.O. — search engine optimization — is the old playbook: rank pages, get clicks, drive traffic. A.E.O. — answer engine optimization — is the new one: structure your content so that AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity extract it as a direct answer. Not a link. The answer itself. [Guest] And the key insight is that these two strategies are not competing. They serve different stages of the user journey. A.E.O. gets you early visibility — brand presence without a click. S.E.O. still handles the long game: sustained rankings and conversions when users are ready to buy. [Host] But here's where it gets messy. A lot of what's being sold as A.E.O. right now is repackaged S.E.O. The indie hacker community has been pretty vocal about that — calling it a buzzword to sell old tactics. What's your read? [Guest] I think the skeptics are right to be suspicious. If someone tells you A.E.O. is just adding "people also ask" sections to your blog posts, they're selling snake oil. The real shift is in content operations. Siteimprove put it well: integrating A.E.O. into an existing S.E.O. program doesn't require new infrastructure, but it does require raising the bar on what publication-ready means. You can't have two quality bars in the same team. [Host] That's the operational challenge. But the technical difference is real too. Brown Bag Marketing described A.E.O. as making your content "AI-readable." That means specific formatting — clear definitions, self-contained facts, structured headers — so a language model can grab a sentence and use it verbatim. [Guest] And that's where the community is seeing a fascinating shift. Indie hackers and SaaS founders are noticing that the pages getting cited by ChatGPT don't look like S.E.O. landing pages. They look like public product docs. Detailed, authoritative, less salesy. Almost like an internal knowledge base published for anyone to read. [Host] So the form factor changes. That's a huge pivot for growth hackers used to writing for Google's crawlers. Now you're writing for a reasoning engine that synthesizes multiple sources. [Guest] Right. And that synthesis creates a new metric: brand presence without a click. Augurian, a digital agency, called that the most important measure for A.E.O. You can't track it with a rank tracker. You have to monitor AI citations directly. [Host] Okay, let's move to the why. Why does this matter to a founder trying to grow from zero to millions in A.R.R.? Because the buyer journey is changing. Yotpo described the A.E.O. effect: users find your brand via an AI summary — no click — and then, when they're ready to buy, they search for you by name. That's a navigational click further down the funnel. [Guest] And if you're only optimizing for top-of-funnel sessions, you miss that completely. You see the branded search spike but you don't know what caused it. The strategic shift is to stop optimizing solely for volume and start measuring visibility in AI answers. [Host] That's why founders are now being advised to hire growth experts who can handle both channels — A.E.O., blogs, AI outbound — to scale from zero to millions. The research we looked at explicitly says that. [Guest] It makes sense. If A.E.O. provides early-stage snippet capture and S.E.O. ensures long-term engagement, you need someone who understands both systems. Not a specialist in one, but an operator who can balance them. [Host] And that operator is what we're seeing called a growth hacker 2.0. Someone who treats A.I. search as an operational system, not a mystery. Let's connect this to what we do at A.E.O. Engine. Our whole thesis is that your brand needs to be the answer — not just a link. That means we build always-on A.I. content systems that produce human-quality content optimized for both Google and answer engines. [Guest] And your clients are seeing real numbers. I know you guys have reported 920% average traffic growth from A.I. search and 9x higher conversions from that traffic. That's not theory — that's measurable. [Host] It comes down to treating content as infrastructure. You need topical authority mapping, structured data, and formatting that an A.I. can parse. Our 100-day traffic sprint framework tackles exactly that: get ranking and revenue wins in three months by combining A.E.O. and S.E.O. in one unified process. [Guest] That's the operational bar we were talking about. One quality standard. One strategy. Not two competing playbooks. [Host] Alright, let's wrap. The takeaway: growth hackers who master A.E.O. alongside S.E.O. are going to own the next wave of search. It's not about choosing one over the other. It's about understanding that A.E.O. gets you cited, S.E.O. gets you clicked, and together they build a brand that wins in both worlds. To see how your brand shows up in A.I. answers right now, go to A.E.O. Engine dot A.I. and request a visibility audit. That's A.E.O. Engine dot A.I. Thanks for listening. [Guest] See you next time.
