- 0:07Speaker 1: All right.
- 0:09Speaker 2: So as I said, there are other connections as well,
- 0:10Speaker 2: some of them in this part of the world. I'm currently, actually,
- 0:16Speaker 2: when we were here in this area last year, last August,
- 0:23Speaker 2: it was kind of a broader.
- 0:25Speaker 1: UK tour that we were doing in August.
- 0:27Speaker 2: We were en route moving from eastern Texas to the
- 0:31Speaker 2: South of Zambia.
- 0:33Speaker 1: So we moved to Zambia last August after that.
- 0:36Speaker 2: The UK tour was over we were in the Manchester
- 0:40Speaker 2: area then over in Northern Ireland and then down back
- 0:47Speaker 2: to London again and from there we went on down
- 0:50Speaker 2: to Osaka and we've lived there since the end of
- 0:54Speaker 2: August where I'm currently serving as the Dean of Theological
- 0:57Speaker 2: Education at African Christian University and also Dean of the
- 1:02Speaker 2: Seminary which we will be starting shortly through the Reform
- 1:06Speaker 2: Baptist Examiner.
- 1:07Speaker 1: But I also have connections in this part of the world.
- 1:10Speaker 2: People often ask me about my last name.
- 1:13Speaker 1: It's Billy Baucom.
- 1:15Speaker 2: And Baucom is a nice, wholesome German name. So it's connected.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Not too far from here.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I'm not German, but the people who owned my family
- 1:28Speaker 2: during slavery in the United States were German.
- 1:31Speaker 1: And that's where we got our name from. But I
- 1:34Speaker 1: also have a Scotch-Irish connection. You didn't know that, did you? Yes,
- 1:40Speaker 1: I have a Scotch-Irish connection.
- 1:43Speaker 2: So I watched the movie Braveheart years ago, and I decided.
- 1:50Speaker 1: When that movie was over that William.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Wallace was my cousin. So there's a part of me somewhere, somehow,
- 1:56Speaker 2: that's from school. And then also, I don't know if
- 2:01Speaker 2: it's finished yet, but I either have or am about
- 2:05Speaker 2: to receive citizenship.
- 2:07Speaker 1: In Northern Ireland. Yeah, it's awesome.
- 2:11Speaker 2: First time I came, my family and I were in
- 2:14Speaker 2: Northern Ireland for two weeks in March, and it didn't rain.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Not one time. The whole time. And they said, this
- 2:23Speaker 1: just doesn't happen. It just doesn't happen. So we came
- 2:27Speaker 1: back again without much of anything, and it just barely rang.
- 2:31Speaker 1: The last time I was here during August, during that.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Tour that we were doing, we were here again for
- 2:38Speaker 2: about a week and a half on Northern Ireland, and
- 2:40Speaker 2: it stopped ringing the day we got there. And so
- 2:43Speaker 2: we were told, look, if this lasts a few more days,
- 2:47Speaker 2: you know we're going to make you a citizen, right?
- 2:49Speaker 1: You're going to have to start.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I believe that my citizenship in Northern Ireland is in
- 2:53Speaker 2: the works because.
- 2:55Speaker 1: The rest of the week it did not rain. So yes,
- 3:00Speaker 1: we love this part of the world very much.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Last time that I was here was the first time
- 3:04Speaker 2: we actually crossed the border into the Republic. And it's
- 3:09Speaker 2: good to be thoroughly in the Republic of Ireland this time. So,
- 3:14Speaker 2: been looking forward to this. I've been told that I'm
- 3:19Speaker 2: not a scientist. Blimey stone? Maybe because I talk too
- 3:23Speaker 2: much already.
- 3:24Speaker 1: All right. In this session, we're dealing with Christ-centered education.
- 3:29Speaker 2: The answer, the issue is the why and how of
- 3:35Speaker 2: home education. And in this session, I want to give
- 3:38Speaker 2: you a biblical theological framework, okay? As we do this, here's.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Some useful websites. People always ask me about these. I
- 3:47Speaker 1: want you to do it.
- 3:48Speaker 2: If these, for those of you who have interest, votingbottom.org, acu-usa.com
- 3:55Speaker 2: is the American version of the website for African Christian University. Sermonaudio.com,
- 4:00Speaker 2: you can go find sermons there for homeschool price, which
- 4:06Speaker 2: is free. And then Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, Instagram Voting Bee,
- 4:13Speaker 2: if you guys are interested in Instagram. Right now, my
- 4:19Speaker 2: Instagram is all about pictures of our first grandchild who
- 4:23Speaker 2: was born June 6th. We just actually left from Minneapolis,
- 4:29Speaker 2: Minnesota where our oldest.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Daughter and our son-in-law are there living with our first grandson.
- 4:36Speaker 1: We have seven sons and two daughters and now we
- 4:39Speaker 1: have a grandson. So, we're happy. So, if you don't
- 4:43Speaker 1: want to see pictures of My grandbaby, don't go to
- 4:47Speaker 1: my Instagram. Because he's all over there. Because he's the
- 4:51Speaker 1: cutest baby in the history of the world. Alright.
- 4:54Speaker 2: So, let's get started. Let's look at some trends. And
- 4:59Speaker 2: in order to understand these trends, I want to share
- 5:01Speaker 2: with you some trends from.
- 5:03Speaker 1: My part of the world. From part of the world
- 5:06Speaker 1: where we started homeschooling. Over in the U.S.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Where people think that things are so well established and
- 5:14Speaker 2: and going so smoothly. By the way, my wife is
- 5:18Speaker 2: here with me, but as you heard, we just got
- 5:22Speaker 2: off the plane this morning around 11, and she said
- 5:25Speaker 2: she was going to close her eyes for a few minutes.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Before coming, and you.
- 5:34Speaker 2: See how that ended up. So I'll let her sleep.
- 5:37Speaker 2: She'll probably sleep all the way into the morning, and
- 5:40Speaker 2: then we'll come in the morning.
- 5:42Speaker 1: All right.
- 5:43Speaker 2: But here's something that we see. And as far as
- 5:46Speaker 2: home education goes, we didn't start.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Out as home educators. My wife has an education degree.
- 5:53Speaker 1: She was a teacher.
- 5:54Speaker 2: And it's always interesting when people find out they're homeschoolers
- 5:57Speaker 2: and then they find out that she was a schoolteacher.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Because they just assume, oh, wow, that's like great preparation
- 6:03Speaker 2: for being a homeschool mom.
- 6:04Speaker 1: She just, no. No, it wasn't.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I had to unlearn almost everything I was taught in
- 6:09Speaker 2: order to be a homeschool mom.
- 6:11Speaker 1: The other thing was, she was dead set against home education.
- 6:14Speaker 2: She had been brainwashed against home education. An education degree
- 6:20Speaker 2: comes with a bunch of other degrees that they don't
- 6:22Speaker 2: tell you, right?
- 6:25Speaker 1: And one of them is a degree in Marxist theory
- 6:28Speaker 1: of education.
- 6:29Speaker 2: And the Marxist theory of education says that children belong
- 6:32Speaker 2: to the state, not to the family. It is the
- 6:36Speaker 2: state's duty and obligation to take those children from you.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And educate them, okay? And there is something.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Wrong, something inherently wrong, something inherently sinister about people who
- 6:51Speaker 2: will not.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Give their children to the state to be educated.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Or at least to a private school that will brag
- 6:58Speaker 2: that they have teachers who are certified by... That's crazy.
- 7:05Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Don't send your children to the state for their education.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Send them to us where all of our teachers have
- 7:14Speaker 2: the same training.
- 7:15Speaker 1: As the teachers of... Hmm? So, but she was a
- 7:23Speaker 1: public school.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Teacher, so public school was not an option from the beginning.
- 7:27Speaker 2: In the U.S., public school teachers are twice as likely
- 7:30Speaker 2: as the population as a whole not to put their
- 7:32Speaker 2: children in public school. Two times the rate of the population.
- 7:39Speaker 2: in general, better, because they know better. So our children
- 7:43Speaker 2: started at a private Christian school.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Eventually, we became home educators, because we had some.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Home educators at our church. We didn't know anything about homeschooling.
- 7:53Speaker 2: We asked all the questions that people ask, you know,
- 7:55Speaker 2: what about socialization? Where do you get your curriculum?
- 7:59Speaker 1: Is it legal?
- 8:00Speaker 2: Who do you report to? Just all that sort of stuff, right?
- 8:02Speaker 2: We asked all those same questions when we met these people.
- 8:04Speaker 2: We had never met homeschoolers before. And so that's when
- 8:09Speaker 2: I began to read and research, and I was all in.
- 8:12Speaker 2: It took about a year and a half to bring
- 8:17Speaker 2: Bridget along, but eventually she came along. And at first
- 8:23Speaker 2: we started doing at home what she had learned to
- 8:25Speaker 2: do in the classroom, and after a short while of
- 8:31Speaker 2: doing that, we realized that we had to have a
- 8:36Speaker 2: completely philosophical and theological overhaul. Home education is not about
- 8:42Speaker 2: doing the same.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Thing in a different location. It's a different animal altogether.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Oftentimes it takes a while to figure this out. I
- 8:51Speaker 1: want to help you today with that. So what are
- 8:54Speaker 1: we seeing?
- 8:55Speaker 2: We're seeing homeschool families abandoning home education in the United
- 8:59Speaker 2: States in alarming numbers. We're also seeing homeschool children graduating without.
- 9:06Speaker 1: A vision or commitment to home education.
- 9:09Speaker 2: So homeschool children go through their homeschooling, ask them about
- 9:12Speaker 2: their children, and they're like, eh, well, maybe. Maybe we will,
- 9:16Speaker 2: maybe we won't. Why are we seeing families jumping ship? First,
- 9:21Speaker 2: strained marriages that cannot sustain a long-term commitment to home education.
- 9:25Speaker 2: That's number one. We're seeing people abandon home education because
- 9:30Speaker 2: their marriage can't take it anymore. I'm so glad you
- 9:35Speaker 2: heard our brother come and talk about that. Just a
- 9:39Speaker 2: few moments of thank you for that. Please listen to
- 9:43Speaker 2: what he said. I'll say more about it later. But
- 9:46Speaker 2: this is very important. See, we have a tendency in
- 9:49Speaker 2: the West already to have child-centric homes.
- 9:56Speaker 1: The marriage is no longer the focus. In fact.
- 10:00Speaker 2: tell me if this sounds familiar you have a couple
- 10:03Speaker 2: and they get married and then they have a discussion about.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Whether or not they want to start a family that's ridiculous.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Having a child is not starting a family it's expanding
- 10:16Speaker 2: a family when you got married you became.
- 10:18Speaker 1: A family.
- 10:21Speaker 2: And we say that because we actually believe that. And
- 10:24Speaker 2: this child-centric world that.
- 10:27Speaker 1: We live in, where we want to give.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Our children everything, our children come into our world and
- 10:32Speaker 2: we center our entire.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Universe around them.
- 10:36Speaker 2: And home education is often an excuse to do that
- 10:40Speaker 2: to an entirely different degree.
- 10:43Speaker 1: And so now they become our everything.
- 10:46Speaker 2: And when we get finished educating our children, they leave
- 10:49Speaker 2: We look at our spouse and say, who are you?
- 10:54Speaker 2: Because we haven't had a marriage in 20 years. Everything
- 10:58Speaker 2: we had and everything.
- 10:59Speaker 1: We were was those children. And now they're gone and
- 11:02Speaker 1: we've got nothing. Absolutely nothing.
- 11:08Speaker 2: And for some people, this happens before the children. For
- 11:11Speaker 2: some people, this strain is too much to bear just
- 11:15Speaker 2: a few years in.
- 11:17Speaker 1: For some people, it's a fight. every year to home educate.
- 11:23Speaker 1: They're not in the same package. They're not a team.
- 11:27Speaker 2: And so we see people leaving because of that. Secondly,
- 11:31Speaker 2: a commitment to the God of sport. A commitment to
- 11:35Speaker 2: the God of sport. We would homeschool, but our kids
- 11:40Speaker 2: are very talented and they have an opportunity to make
- 11:43Speaker 2: a lot of money.
- 11:44Speaker 1: So we're not going to do this anymore. We're going
- 11:47Speaker 1: to send them to.
- 11:48Speaker 2: The place where our true worship can be expressed more fully.
- 11:56Speaker 1: If you can't say amen, don't say out. Okay? Thirdly, deception.
- 12:04Speaker 1: The AP, advanced placement courses.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Well, you know, we were okay, you know, down in
- 12:10Speaker 2: those lower grades, but now they're up in the higher
- 12:12Speaker 2: grades and they need some advanced placement courses so they
- 12:14Speaker 2: can get ready.
- 12:15Speaker 1: For college, so we'll send more of the children to worship.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Of course, many states.
- 12:20Speaker 2: In the United States are, they're catching on, so here's
- 12:23Speaker 2: what they're doing.
- 12:24Speaker 1: They have a program that looks like this.
- 12:27Speaker 2: They'll say, hey, you know, it's a carrot and stick approach.
- 12:32Speaker 2: So the stick is the state government. And the state
- 12:35Speaker 2: government says, you have to provide us with these records,
- 12:38Speaker 2: these records, and these records, and you have to prove
- 12:41Speaker 2: that you're doing this, this, and this.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And homeschool mom was pulling her hair out because she's like.
- 12:45Speaker 2: I just, I don't even know if I got, how
- 12:48Speaker 2: do you do that? Where do I find that? You know,
- 12:50Speaker 2: there's more to do. Well, now, here's the carrot. The
- 12:53Speaker 2: carrot is the school district that says, hey, we'll give
- 12:56Speaker 2: you records for you. In fact, we'll give you curriculum.
- 12:59Speaker 2: And we'll give you a laptop.
- 13:04Speaker 1: I'm set aside here. Now, here's what happens.
- 13:09Speaker 2: You see, school districts receive government funding on a per-child basis.
- 13:16Speaker 2: With this program, they get to control your curriculum.
- 13:20Speaker 1: They get to count your child.
- 13:23Speaker 2: They get a kickback from the state, and you get
- 13:25Speaker 2: your 30 pieces of silver in the form of a laptop.
- 13:32Speaker 2: And the next thing you know, you're no longer in
- 13:35Speaker 2: control of your child's education.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Someone else is. Okay?
- 13:42Speaker 2: So this is another reason that we see people Unconvinced children.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Remember that second piece of the puzzle? The children who say,
- 13:51Speaker 1: you know, I don't want to do this with my kids.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Why not? Number one, because of hypocrisy. Hypocrisy. They see hypocrisy.
- 14:02Speaker 1: It's an amazing thing that happens when you become a
- 14:05Speaker 1: homeschool dad.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Sin becomes harder to sin. Both your children sinned And
- 14:14Speaker 2: your own. Your children seem to confirm that because, you know,
- 14:18Speaker 2: they go off to the school and they come back
- 14:20Speaker 2: with these glowing reports. Every once in a while, you know,
- 14:23Speaker 2: there's somebody who has a problem and you've got to
- 14:25Speaker 2: come in and talk about this idea. But for the
- 14:26Speaker 2: most part, most kids get glowing reports.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Oh, he's a wonderful child. She's a wonderful girl.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And you just, you know, you get stickers to put
- 14:35Speaker 2: on your car and all this sort of thing. And
- 14:36Speaker 2: you just think everything, everything's pretty. Then you bring them
- 14:40Speaker 2: home and you see their sin. It's there with you
- 14:46Speaker 2: all the time. And you realize your child's a bigger.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Sinner than you thought. And then you get frustrated with
- 14:53Speaker 1: them and you realize you're a bigger sinner than you thought. Amen.
- 15:00Speaker 1: So it exposes that. And we can even deal with
- 15:04Speaker 1: that honestly. Like we heard earlier.
- 15:08Speaker 2: That can even drive us to the cross where we
- 15:11Speaker 2: deal with it honestly.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Or we can deal with it as hypocrites.
- 15:16Speaker 2: And unfortunately, all too often, this is what happens. Homeschool parents,
- 15:21Speaker 2: homeschool mom, I've often homeschooled mom. Homeschool mom cracks the
- 15:25Speaker 2: whip on the kid's sin and never acknowledges her own.
- 15:29Speaker 2: And the kids see that as hypocrisy and they want
- 15:32Speaker 2: nothing to do with it.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Secondly, legalism. Legalism. The homeschool movement is rife with legalism.
- 15:48Speaker 1: To a sickening degree.
- 15:51Speaker 2: It's rife with legalism. Because that's a lot easier. Because
- 15:55Speaker 2: here's what happens. As parents, many of us are recipe parents.
- 16:01Speaker 2: And what I mean by that is we have this
- 16:06Speaker 2: idea that raising children is like baking a cake.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And if you just find the right ingredients and you.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Put them together in the right balance, then you can
- 16:17Speaker 2: guarantee the outcome, right?
- 16:20Speaker 1: And most of us wouldn't say this up front. We
- 16:24Speaker 1: wouldn't admit to being recipe parents. But here's how you know.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Something happens and, you know, you have some children and
- 16:36Speaker 2: several children go off and they do well. And then
- 16:39Speaker 2: you have one that derails. And you come and you say, I.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Just don't know what happened. We did everything that we
- 16:46Speaker 1: knew how to do. I don't know what we did
- 16:48Speaker 1: with this one. Stop, time out.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Because here's what you just said, homeschool mom, homeschool dad.
- 16:53Speaker 2: You just said those children are doing well because of
- 16:57Speaker 2: what we did. This child's not doing well because obviously
- 17:00Speaker 2: we missed a step.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Because we determined the spiritual outcome of our children's lives.
- 17:11Speaker 2: We control that. That's recipe parenting. And here's what recipe
- 17:17Speaker 2: parenting does to you on the front.
- 17:19Speaker 1: End of homeschooling.
- 17:20Speaker 2: When you're not admitting that you're a recipe parent, you
- 17:23Speaker 2: look at curriculum like this.
- 17:27Speaker 1: What's the matter? I just don't know which one. I
- 17:30Speaker 1: can't just pick one. Why?
- 17:32Speaker 2: Because if the recipe's not right, I'll mess up the outcome.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Because everything depends on me. Again, if you can't say amen,
- 17:46Speaker 1: you ought to say out. You know I'm telling the truth, right?
- 17:52Speaker 2: And we don't admit this, we don't see this, but
- 17:54Speaker 2: that's what it is. It's recipe parenting, okay? Or if
- 17:59Speaker 2: it's not recipe.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Parenting, it's reputation parenting. Reputation parenting is a little different.
- 18:05Speaker 2: With reputation parenting, our goal with our children is is
- 18:09Speaker 2: for our children to perform, to behave in such a
- 18:12Speaker 2: way that they don't embarrass us.
- 18:15Speaker 1: And so, we find a family.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Whose children look orderly, and they dress nicely, and they
- 18:23Speaker 2: walk in a straight line, and they speak matterably, and
- 18:26Speaker 2: we go, what'd you guys use?
- 18:29Speaker 1: We know nothing about your child's education. I mean, they
- 18:33Speaker 1: can be as dumb as a post.
- 18:36Speaker 2: But they look shiny on the outside and that's all
- 18:40Speaker 2: we care about.
- 18:41Speaker 1: What did you use? Because that's what I want. Shiny
- 18:45Speaker 1: on the outside.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Jesus referred to that as polishing the outside of the cup.
- 18:51Speaker 1: This was his accusation against the Pharisees. Okay?
- 18:55Speaker 2: We don't want to be recipe parents. We don't want
- 18:59Speaker 2: to be reputation parents. We want to be redemption parents. Amen?
- 19:05Speaker 2: My children are utterly dependent on the cross.
- 19:13Speaker 1: And whatever I give to my children, it's going to
- 19:15Speaker 1: be in that way.
- 19:18Speaker 2: And any of my children who end up walking with God,
- 19:21Speaker 2: my response will be to fall on my face before
- 19:25Speaker 2: a holy God and to thank him for.
- 19:27Speaker 1: His mercy and his grace.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Not to tip my hat because he gave me what
- 19:33Speaker 2: he owed me because I got the recipe right.
- 19:37Speaker 1: You see the difference? Please hear this. If you don't
- 19:41Speaker 1: hear anything else this weekend, hear this.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Because there are a lot of us in this room
- 19:47Speaker 2: and we're trapped in one of those first two rooms. Okay?
- 19:51Speaker 1: It is the natural tendency. Alright?
- 19:57Speaker 2: I can tell.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I can tell because of the questions that you ask.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I listen to you ladies ask my wife questions.
- 20:04Speaker 2: And your questions are some form of give me a
- 20:07Speaker 2: paint by numbers Way to deal with X. Tell me
- 20:13Speaker 2: step by step what to do to fix this because
- 20:18Speaker 2: you're a child of a.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Witch and not a person. Enough. Okay? Enough. Some of
- 20:28Speaker 1: y'all already don't like me. I'm just getting started. Alright. Worldliness. Worldliness.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Worldliness is the third one. Worldliness? No, we're not now.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Those other two things, maybe. But this worldliness thing, no.
- 20:44Speaker 2: He's talking about somebody else now, right?
- 20:47Speaker 1: That's not us. Yes, it is. Yes, it is.
- 20:53Speaker 2: All I have to do is find somebody who doesn't
- 20:56Speaker 2: like homeschooling and sit them in front of you. And
- 21:00Speaker 2: your worldliness will come out.
- 21:02Speaker 1: They don't like homeschooling, so what will you do?
- 21:06Speaker 2: You'll say, well, you know, actually, homeschoolers outperform other people
- 21:10Speaker 2: academically and they get a better education.
- 21:12Speaker 1: What about socialization? Well, my kid's involved in this, this, this, this,
- 21:16Speaker 1: and this. Truth be told, I'm running ragged. My life
- 21:18Speaker 1: is completely out of balance because of my kid's social life.
- 21:24Speaker 2: That's worldliness. In other words, some worldling comes to you
- 21:30Speaker 2: and says, I don't like what you're doing. because it's
- 21:33Speaker 2: not worldly enough, and your response is, I'm as worldly
- 21:36Speaker 2: as you are when it comes to my child's education.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Hmm? Some of y'all are going to make it stop. No! Lastly,
- 21:52Speaker 1: a lack of vision. These kids just don't have a vision.
- 21:55Speaker 1: They don't know. They just don't. I can't tell you
- 21:59Speaker 1: how many times I've talked to homeschool parents at conferences,
- 22:02Speaker 1: You know, and they're like, yeah, we're doing it this semester.
- 22:07Speaker 2: We're doing it this year. Next year, I don't know.
- 22:11Speaker 2: You know, but you know, right now we're doing it.
- 22:15Speaker 2: No big picture.
- 22:17Speaker 1: No vision. No biblical theological framework as to.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Why it is we're doing what we're doing. And if
- 22:25Speaker 2: you're not giving your children.
- 22:27Speaker 1: A vision for this, then they're not going to have
- 22:31Speaker 1: a vision for what they're doing. Two problems. Number one,
- 22:37Speaker 1: the what without the why. We're doing this thing, but
- 22:41Speaker 1: we don't know why we're doing it. Number two, the
- 22:45Speaker 1: wrong why.
- 22:45Speaker 2: We have the wrong motivations. Those are the two main problems.
- 22:52Speaker 2: When we talk about the what without the why, Proverbs 20, 25,
- 22:54Speaker 2: it is snare to say rashly, it is holy. And
- 23:00Speaker 2: to reflect only after making vows. Now, for how many
- 23:07Speaker 2: of us? Now, that's not, that's just because almost everybody's
- 23:11Speaker 2: hand goes up.
- 23:12Speaker 1: And you don't even have to raise your hand.
- 23:14Speaker 2: But how many of us would this not be true
- 23:19Speaker 2: of as it relates to our decision to homeschool?
- 23:24Speaker 1: We didn't understand what we were doing.
- 23:26Speaker 2: We just, we were afraid, we were frustrated, we were whatever,
- 23:30Speaker 2: and we just went, come on. And we had no biblical, theological,
- 23:35Speaker 2: philosophical framework whatsoever.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Okay?
- 23:39Speaker 2: We swore rashly, it is holy. And then later, we
- 23:43Speaker 2: tried to figure out how.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Okay? This is this man. Proverbs 2, 1-5.
- 23:50Speaker 2: My son, if you receive my words and treasure up
- 23:54Speaker 2: my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom
- 23:59Speaker 2: and inclining your heart to understanding.
- 24:01Speaker 1: My son, if you receive my words and treasure.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Yes, if you call out for insight and raise your
- 24:12Speaker 2: voice for understanding, if.
- 24:14Speaker 1: You seek it like silver and search for it, ask for.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Hidden treasures, then you will understand.
- 24:20Speaker 1: The fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
- 24:25Speaker 1: I keep trying. We search for it. We seek for it.
- 24:30Speaker 1: We don't just make assumptions. Okay? What are some of
- 24:34Speaker 1: the wrong whys? Here's some of the worldly whys. Sorry.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Uh-oh.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Wrong whys.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Okay. Okay.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Hired test scores. That's the wrong reason why. Hired college GPA.
- 25:01Speaker 1: It's true. That's the wrong reason to do this. Escaping
- 25:05Speaker 1: the evil of the government school campus. That's the wrong reason.
- 25:09Speaker 1: That's the wrong reason. I always laugh when people are like,
- 25:11Speaker 1: why are you doing this?
- 25:12Speaker 2: Because there's evil over there in the schools and I'm
- 25:15Speaker 2: bringing them home so they can escape the evil.
- 25:17Speaker 1: What's going to help them escape the evil at all?
- 25:20Speaker 2: Amen you better have a better program than.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Moving them somewhere because you move them home you're going
- 25:28Speaker 1: to find evil there too right.
- 25:32Speaker 2: So the higher test scores higher GPA why is this
- 25:35Speaker 2: the wrong why well because what do we do if
- 25:39Speaker 2: next year for some strange reason the government system produces
- 25:44Speaker 2: higher test scores.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Do we then just flip flop I mean, if that's
- 25:50Speaker 1: our reason, then all they have to do is somehow
- 25:53Speaker 1: figure out, you know, a way to get better test scores,
- 25:55Speaker 1: and they can do that, right? They can do that.
- 25:58Speaker 1: The game's rigged anyway. This is the great irony.
- 26:05Speaker 2: And I have, there are people, I've had conversations with people, conversations.
- 26:12Speaker 1: With dads whose wives are on pins and needles.
- 26:15Speaker 2: They're terrified because dad has said to them, If their
- 26:19Speaker 2: test scores don't improve by this time, we're going to
- 26:23Speaker 2: put them.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Back in the school system.
- 26:26Speaker 2: I just have to ask a couple of questions. I
- 26:29Speaker 2: just want to go, okay, first dad, let me ask
- 26:31Speaker 2: you a couple of questions.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Have you looked at the school system's test scores?
- 26:38Speaker 2: Because the school.
- 26:38Speaker 1: System's test scores are horrific, right? And is your attitude,
- 26:44Speaker 1: if the school system's test scores don't improve, that I'm
- 26:46Speaker 1: not going to trust them? No, no it's not.
- 26:48Speaker 2: You're treating your wife uniquely. But let's just leave that
- 26:50Speaker 2: over there for a moment. Here's the second question I
- 26:53Speaker 2: have for.
- 26:53Speaker 1: You, Dad. Who's setting, you know, your scope and sequence
- 26:58Speaker 1: and everything.
- 26:59Speaker 2: For your child's education? Is it the school system or
- 27:02Speaker 2: is it your wife? Because this is important. Because here's what.
- 27:05Speaker 1: You're telling your wife.
- 27:07Speaker 2: You're telling your wife, you need to educate your children
- 27:11Speaker 2: our children, in accordance with our understanding, our philosophy, our pedagogy,
- 27:18Speaker 2: our school consequence, then you need to go to the
- 27:21Speaker 2: school system and allow them to attest for something you're
- 27:25Speaker 2: not teaching toward in order to gauge whether or not
- 27:29Speaker 2: you're successful. That's stubborn on students. The only way that
- 27:37Speaker 2: measure could be accurate, and by the way, this is.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Positive or negative, the only way that measure.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Could be accurate is if whoever's making the test knew
- 27:46Speaker 2: what it was you were doing so.
- 27:47Speaker 1: That they can test for the success of what you're doing. Right?
- 27:54Speaker 2: If you're doing something different, it doesn't matter if your
- 27:57Speaker 2: children do well or if they do poorly, that is
- 27:59Speaker 2: not an accurate assessment. So whether you poke your chest
- 28:06Speaker 2: out and cry or crawl up under the bed for three.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Days, it makes no sense. That test, those tests can't
- 28:16Speaker 1: tell you whether or not you're being successful. Whether or
- 28:21Speaker 1: not your child is being successful. So those are the
- 28:26Speaker 1: wrong lies. What are the right lies? Here are the
- 28:33Speaker 1: right lies.
- 28:35Speaker 2: We do it because we're convinced by Scripture. We do
- 28:37Speaker 2: it because we understand the role and responsibility of parents.
- 28:41Speaker 2: We do it because we desire to advance the kingdom
- 28:43Speaker 2: of God. And we do it because we desire to
- 28:44Speaker 2: bless the kingdom of man. Those are the right reasons
- 28:47Speaker 2: to educate your.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Children at home.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Okay?
- 28:51Speaker 1: Let's look at these. Number one, we do it because
- 28:53Speaker 1: we're convinced by Scripture. We're convinced by Scripture that this
- 28:57Speaker 1: is what we're called to do. But convinced of what? Um...
- 29:04Speaker 1: Home education is not just preferable. It's biblical. Home education
- 29:09Speaker 1: is not just preferable. It's biblical. Now, secondly, this is important.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Though not everyone can or must homeschool, Christians are obligated
- 29:18Speaker 2: to give their children Christian education.
- 29:24Speaker 1: It's important that you get this distinction. I get used
- 29:26Speaker 1: all the time.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Yeah, he says everybody has to homeschool. I've never said that.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Not one time, not one day in my entire life Okay?
- 29:35Speaker 2: Because first of all, we can't even agree on a
- 29:37Speaker 2: definition of homeschooling.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Right? For some people, you know, if you're using an
- 29:43Speaker 1: outside curriculum, you're not truly homeschooling. Because if you're truly homeschooling,
- 29:46Speaker 1: you're creating your own curriculum.
- 29:48Speaker 2: For other people, you know, you can use outside curriculum,
- 29:51Speaker 2: but you can't use outside instruction. So if you go
- 29:53Speaker 2: somewhere for piano lessons or writing lessons, then you're not
- 29:56Speaker 2: truly homeschooling.
- 29:58Speaker 1: For some people, it's what you think. You see what
- 30:00Speaker 1: I'm getting at? We can't even agree on a definition, okay?
- 30:04Speaker 1: But here's what we can say clearly from Scripture, is
- 30:07Speaker 1: that we are obligated to give our children a Christian education.
- 30:10Speaker 1: There's no doubt. So, while I do not say and
- 30:13Speaker 1: would not say everybody has to go.
- 30:15Speaker 2: To school, I do say nobody should use government school.
- 30:20Speaker 2: No Christian should use government school. Unless there's some circumstance
- 30:26Speaker 2: in your.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Life that forces you to do so. And sometimes they're wrong.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Sometimes they're wrong.
- 30:33Speaker 2: There are people who, you know, who've had the frowning
- 30:37Speaker 2: providence of a divorce in their life and joint custody and,
- 30:40Speaker 2: you know, there's some people who have, you know.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Other sort of things that put them in that situation.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I understand that. Okay? I understand that.
- 30:51Speaker 2: But when we get what education is, allowing the government
- 30:56Speaker 2: to do it is not an option. Thirdly, Therefore, government education,
- 31:02Speaker 2: which is anti-Christian by federal.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Mandate, is not a viable option.
- 31:07Speaker 2: And government education across the West is anti-Christian by federal mandate.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Government education cannot be pro-Christian. First, we must view education
- 31:18Speaker 1: as discipleship. I want to explain why I make that argument.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Because we must view education as discipleship. In Army 6,
- 31:26Speaker 2: 6 and 7, These words that I command you today
- 31:30Speaker 2: shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently
- 31:32Speaker 2: to your children and shall talk of them when you
- 31:35Speaker 2: sit in your house, when you walk by the way,
- 31:38Speaker 2: when you lie down, and when you rise. In other words,
- 31:42Speaker 2: he uses those four distinctions in order to paint a
- 31:47Speaker 2: picture of discipleship.
- 31:49Speaker 1: That is all-encompassing. It's all-encompassing. Luke 6, 40.
- 31:56Speaker 2: A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when
- 31:59Speaker 2: he is fully trained will be like his teacher.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Period.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Education is discipleship. Whoever is educating our children is discipling
- 32:11Speaker 2: our children.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Alright?
- 32:14Speaker 2: Secondly, we must protect our children from undoubtedly influence when
- 32:18Speaker 2: we can.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Proverbs 1, 1 and 2.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel
- 32:25Speaker 2: of Psalms, I said Proverbs, Psalms, walks.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in
- 32:30Speaker 1: the way.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but
- 32:33Speaker 2: his delight is in the law of the Lord, and
- 32:35Speaker 2: on his law he meditates during non-school hours.
- 32:44Speaker 1: You can't make that fit, folks. You can't force an
- 32:50Speaker 1: acceptable government education into Psalm 1, 1 and 2.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Psalm 14, 1, the fool says in his heart, there
- 32:58Speaker 2: is no God.
- 32:59Speaker 1: They are corrupt. They do abominable deeds. There is none
- 33:04Speaker 1: who does good.
- 33:07Speaker 2: God bless the folks in the United States, but, you know,
- 33:13Speaker 2: there's this, our schools are different mentality. And as we
- 33:19Speaker 2: say in the psalm, everybody, not everybody, everybody, that's beyond everybody, okay?
- 33:24Speaker 2: Everybody thinks that their schools are different, right? It doesn't
- 33:29Speaker 2: matter what the evidence is. Our schools are just not
- 33:31Speaker 2: like all those other schools. We have good schools. Your
- 33:35Speaker 2: schools are anti-Christian by federal mandate. Good and godless do
- 33:40Speaker 2: not go together. There are no good government schools.
- 33:46Speaker 1: There can't be. There can be government.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Schools that get good outcomes in terms of, you.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Know, grades or whatever.
- 33:54Speaker 2: But that's not goodness. That is a flawed measure of goodness.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Proverbs 1.7, Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
- 34:07Speaker 1: There it is.
- 34:07Speaker 2: That's the beginning of knowledge. That's the starting point. So
- 34:11Speaker 2: if your starting point is something.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Other than that, you're a fool.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Proverbs 13.20, Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but
- 34:21Speaker 2: the companion of fools.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Who we saw in life. No. We'll suffer harm. The
- 34:36Speaker 1: band of fools will suffer harm. That's what the text says. Well, okay,
- 34:43Speaker 1: I get all that, right?
- 34:44Speaker 2: I get all that, and that's fine. But eventually your
- 34:47Speaker 2: children are going to be out there in the world,
- 34:49Speaker 2: and you need to prepare them to go out there
- 34:52Speaker 2: and face oppositions so you can put them in school,
- 34:55Speaker 2: and they learn how to face the oppositions. Matthew 18
- 35:00Speaker 2: 7 Woe to the world for temptations to sin for
- 35:04Speaker 2: it is necessary that temptations come but woe to the
- 35:11Speaker 2: one by whom the temptation comes.
- 35:14Speaker 1: My children are going to be tempted but woe to
- 35:16Speaker 1: me if.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I'm the one who blames it. It's not my job
- 35:20Speaker 2: to tempt my child. It's my job to prepare my
- 35:26Speaker 2: child And a disciple my child. It is not my
- 35:29Speaker 2: job to tempt my child. Here's the other thing. And
- 35:35Speaker 2: it's so. But listen to this. When people are saying that.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Here's what they're saying. Discipleship. In it's fullest expression. Cannot
- 35:48Speaker 2: be accomplished.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Without the godless. Think about that.
- 35:56Speaker 2: A person cannot be fully and appropriately discipled without godless
- 36:02Speaker 2: people to finish the discipleship process through temptation. God's people
- 36:10Speaker 2: can't get discipleship done. That's what we're saying. Now no
- 36:15Speaker 2: one would just sort of openly say that, but when
- 36:18Speaker 2: we don't think about the application of truth, we end
- 36:22Speaker 2: up saying it nonetheless. We must avoid unbiblical teaching when
- 36:27Speaker 2: we can. Romans 12, 2. Do not be conformed to
- 36:32Speaker 2: this world. By the way, the most conforming exercise.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Known to man is education. Amen?
- 36:45Speaker 2: Can anybody tell me a more conforming exercise? I had
- 36:49Speaker 2: somebody say one time, well, you know, military, boot camp,
- 36:53Speaker 2: you know, that lasts.
- 36:55Speaker 1: a couple months.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Right and it does an effective job in those couple
- 37:01Speaker 2: months but the education system lasts over a decade there
- 37:06Speaker 2: is no more conforming exercise known to man than the
- 37:12Speaker 2: education process do not be conformed to this world but
- 37:19Speaker 2: be transformed by the renewal of your mind that by
- 37:22Speaker 2: testing you may discern what is the will of God
- 37:25Speaker 2: What is good and acceptable and perfect.
- 37:28Speaker 1: 2 Corinthians 10.5.
- 37:30Speaker 2: We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the
- 37:34Speaker 2: knowledge of God.
- 37:35Speaker 1: And take every thought captive to obey Christ. How many thoughts?
- 37:40Speaker 1: Every thought. We take every thought captive to obey Christ.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Colossians 2.8.
- 37:48Speaker 2: See to it that no one takes you captive by
- 37:50Speaker 2: philosophy and empty deceit.
- 37:52Speaker 1: According to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of
- 37:55Speaker 1: the world, and not according to Christ.
- 38:01Speaker 2: 1 Timothy 6, 20-21 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted
- 38:06Speaker 2: to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradiction to what
- 38:13Speaker 2: is falsely called knowledge, for by professing it, some have
- 38:17Speaker 2: swerved from the faith.
- 38:18Speaker 1: 1 Timothy We must teach God's law. We must teach
- 38:25Speaker 1: God's law. You know, there are a lot of people
- 38:40Speaker 1: who love to make the argument. In fact, it's the
- 38:44Speaker 1: most common argument against a whole bunch of kiddie Christians.
- 38:47Speaker 2: It's that Matthew 5 argument.
- 38:51Speaker 1: It's the salt and light argument. We need to be
- 38:55Speaker 1: salt in life.
- 38:57Speaker 2: So we need to send our children to the government
- 39:00Speaker 2: educational system so that they can be salt in life.
- 39:04Speaker 1: First of all, send them in before they're converted. Right?
- 39:09Speaker 2: So that they can be unconverted salt in life, whatever
- 39:12Speaker 2: that is.
- 39:13Speaker 1: A couple of things. I love it when people bring
- 39:16Speaker 1: this up. Right? I love it when people bring this up.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Because there's a great opportunity here on two fronts.
- 39:23Speaker 1: First, there's no duty. Okay, bring it up in Matthew
- 39:27Speaker 1: chapter 5. Let's look at Matthew chapter 5. 5, shall we?
- 39:31Speaker 1: Since that's what you want to bring.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Up, you want to say that I'm violating the Twitter
- 39:34Speaker 2: teaching in Matthew chapter 5. And as we do this,
- 39:37Speaker 2: do you understand the difference between indicatives and imperatives?
- 39:40Speaker 1: Okay? What was that? Well, an indicative. An indicative tells
- 39:46Speaker 1: you what something is, right? An indicative. That is a microphone.
- 39:50Speaker 1: That's an indicative statement, right? An imperative statement, speak into
- 39:53Speaker 1: the microphone. There's a difference between indicatives and imperatives.
- 39:57Speaker 2: And when you read the Bible, you must know the
- 40:00Speaker 2: difference between indicatives and imperatives. There's a difference between the
- 40:03Speaker 2: Bible telling you you are something and the Bible telling
- 40:06Speaker 2: you you must do something.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Okay? We all get it, right?
- 40:14Speaker 2: Now, you ought to be in the school system So
- 40:20Speaker 2: that you can go and be salt and light. Sounds
- 40:22Speaker 2: like there's an imperative somewhere in there, right?
- 40:26Speaker 1: Okay. You are the salt of the earth. Is that
- 40:30Speaker 1: indicative or imperative?
- 40:31Speaker 2: That's indicative. There's no imperative there whatsoever. But if the
- 40:35Speaker 2: salt has lost its taste, how shall.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Its saltiness be restored?
- 40:39Speaker 2: It is no longer good for anything except to be
- 40:41Speaker 2: thrown out and trampled under people's feet. By the way,
- 40:44Speaker 2: that would sound like a reason not to go to
- 40:48Speaker 2: government school.
- 40:48Speaker 1: But we're just going to leave that for now. You
- 40:51Speaker 1: are the light of the world. Indicative or imperative?
- 40:54Speaker 2: That's indicative, folks. No imperative anywhere there. A city set
- 40:58Speaker 2: on a hill cannot be hidden.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Right?
- 41:03Speaker 2: Nor do people light a lamp and put it under
- 41:04Speaker 2: a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light
- 41:07Speaker 2: to all in the.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Hmm?
- 41:13Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Isn't that interesting? But would you leave that alone too, right?
- 41:21Speaker 2: Because, you know, we don't want to witness too quickly.
- 41:25Speaker 2: We need to linger over it for a while. But
- 41:27Speaker 2: for now, just contemplate that word for a few moments,
- 41:31Speaker 2: shall you?
- 41:32Speaker 1: Your first problem, the person who's telling me that.
- 41:35Speaker 2: I need to send my kid to the government school,
- 41:36Speaker 2: is that you turned indicatives into imperatives.
- 41:41Speaker 1: You created a law where there was none.
- 41:44Speaker 2: The Bible tells me I am salt, I am light,
- 41:48Speaker 2: regardless of where I am.
- 41:50Speaker 1: You tell me there's certain places that I have to
- 41:52Speaker 1: go in order to become salt and light. You're abusing
- 41:57Speaker 1: the text. But wait, there's more. Let your light shine.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Before others so that they may see your good works
- 42:07Speaker 2: and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Do not think that I have come to abolish.
- 42:14Speaker 1: The law or the prophets. I have not come to
- 42:17Speaker 1: abolish them, but to fulfill them.
- 42:19Speaker 2: For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth
- 42:23Speaker 2: pass away, not an iota, not a dot will pass
- 42:28Speaker 2: from the law until all is accomplished.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Of these commandments and teaches others to do the same,
- 42:37Speaker 2: will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but
- 42:39Speaker 2: whoever does them and teaches them will be.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Called great in the kingdom of heaven. First of all,
- 42:45Speaker 1: not only did you take an indicative and turn it.
- 42:47Speaker 2: Into an imperative, but the Salt and Light text mentions
- 42:51Speaker 2: absolutely nothing about education or teaching. And right after it,
- 42:56Speaker 2: there is a text that clearly mentions teaching, and it says,
- 43:00Speaker 2: don't be.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Taught by people who don't uphold the law.
- 43:07Speaker 2: So you abuse one text in order to try to
- 43:11Speaker 2: tell me that I need to send my kid to
- 43:12Speaker 2: the government school.
- 43:14Speaker 1: And you ignore one that comes right after.
- 43:16Speaker 2: It that makes it clear that you must not send
- 43:19Speaker 2: yours there.
- 43:26Speaker 1: But I digress. Alright. Matthew 22, 34, 36. But when
- 43:31Speaker 1: the Pharisees heard that.
- 43:33Speaker 2: He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together And one
- 43:37Speaker 2: of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. Teacher,
- 43:41Speaker 2: which is the greatest commandment in the law? Now, it's
- 43:44Speaker 2: very interesting because there were several schools of thought. Some
- 43:47Speaker 2: would argue that the greatest commandment in the law was
- 43:49Speaker 2: the first commandment. You know, you should not know the
- 43:52Speaker 2: God before me. There were some who argued that it
- 43:54Speaker 2: was the tenth. The tenth commandment was the greatest commandment.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Because coveting really is the root of all of our
- 44:04Speaker 2: violations of all the other commandments. There are others who
- 44:07Speaker 2: would argue that the fifth commandment was the great commandment
- 44:10Speaker 2: because it was the bridge between the two tables of
- 44:12Speaker 2: the law, right?
- 44:14Speaker 1: The first table of the law is the first four commandments.
- 44:16Speaker 2: The vertical commandments have to do with our duty to God.
- 44:19Speaker 2: And the second table of the law, the last six
- 44:21Speaker 2: commandments are the horizontal commandments. They have to do with
- 44:23Speaker 2: our duty toward men, right?
- 44:26Speaker 1: And so basically they're going, Jesus, which school are you
- 44:30Speaker 1: part of? Commandment one? Commandment five? Commandment ten? Which one
- 44:35Speaker 1: is the greatest? Listen to his answer.
- 44:42Speaker 2: He said to them, you should love the Lord your
- 44:44Speaker 2: God with all your heart, with all your soul, and
- 44:46Speaker 2: with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Interestingly enough, that's a summary of the first table.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Of the law.
- 44:55Speaker 2: Jesus, what's the greatest commandment? His response, I'm going to
- 44:59Speaker 2: have to go with one through four. And the second commandment,
- 45:04Speaker 2: It's like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
- 45:08Speaker 2: On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.
- 45:11Speaker 2: By the way, that's the second table of the law.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Jesus, what's the greatest commandment? I'm going to have to
- 45:16Speaker 1: say 1 through 4.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Follow closely by 5 through 10.
- 45:23Speaker 1: That's his answer. Folks, we must teach the law of
- 45:26Speaker 1: God to our children. We have to.
- 45:28Speaker 2: If we don't teach the law of God to our children,
- 45:31Speaker 2: number one, they don't know they need the Gospels.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Because they don't know that they're not righteous.
- 45:38Speaker 2: They don't know that they don't rise to the level
- 45:42Speaker 2: of the righteousness that God requires if we don't teach
- 45:45Speaker 2: them God's law.
- 45:46Speaker 1: And this is the problem with our governments. They don't
- 45:50Speaker 1: have a.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Standard of righteousness. They've become their own standard of righteousness.
- 45:55Speaker 2: And if you are your own standard of righteousness, then
- 45:58Speaker 2: anything goes. Secondly, if we don't teach our children the law,
- 46:03Speaker 2: then they don't understand what righteousness looks like when Christ
- 46:07Speaker 2: forms in you.
- 46:08Speaker 1: As a believer.
- 46:14Speaker 2: We almost must be gospel sinning because the law is
- 46:17Speaker 2: not an end in itself. I will put enmity between
- 46:21Speaker 2: you and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring.
- 46:25Speaker 2: He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel.
- 46:28Speaker 2: The first proclamation. Of the gospel. Romans 1.16.17. For I
- 46:35Speaker 2: am not ashamed of the gospel. For it is the
- 46:37Speaker 2: power of God.
- 46:38Speaker 1: To salvation. To everyone who believes. To the Jew first.
- 46:41Speaker 1: And also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness
- 46:45Speaker 1: of God. Is revealed from faith for faith. As it
- 46:48Speaker 1: is written. The righteous shall live by faith. Not recipes.
- 46:54Speaker 1: I am astonished.
- 47:00Speaker 2: You are so quickly, Galatians here, deserting him who called
- 47:04Speaker 2: you in the grace of Christ and are turning.
- 47:09Speaker 1: To a different gospel. Not that there is another one.
- 47:13Speaker 2: But there are some who trouble you and want to
- 47:16Speaker 2: distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or
- 47:19Speaker 2: an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel
- 47:22Speaker 2: contrary to the one we preached to you, let.
- 47:25Speaker 1: It be accursed.
- 47:26Speaker 2: As we have said before, so now I say again,
- 47:30Speaker 2: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to
- 47:33Speaker 2: the one you received, let.
- 47:35Speaker 1: It be a curse. We must also be good stewards.
- 47:40Speaker 1: This is a stewardship issue. Should we pay tax to Caesar?
- 47:50Speaker 1: Caesar says, bring me a denarius. Let me look at it.
- 47:54Speaker 1: And they brought one.
- 47:55Speaker 2: And he said to them, whose likeness and inscription is this?
- 47:59Speaker 1: And they said to him, Caesars. Jesus said to.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Them, render to Caesars the things that are Caesars, and
- 48:04Speaker 2: to God the things that are God's.
- 48:05Speaker 1: And they marveled at him.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Well, what does that have to do with education? Bring
- 48:11Speaker 2: me a child. Whose inscription and image is on the child?
- 48:17Speaker 1: Hmm? God's.
- 48:20Speaker 2: So you must not render him to Caesar. Psalm 127.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it
- 48:33Speaker 2: labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city,
- 48:37Speaker 2: the watchman stays awake in vain.
- 48:39Speaker 1: It is in vain that you rise.
- 48:40Speaker 2: Up early and go late to rest, eating.
- 48:43Speaker 1: The bread of anxious toil, for he gives to his
- 48:46Speaker 1: beloved sleep. Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
- 48:50Speaker 1: the fruit of.
- 48:51Speaker 2: The womb of reward, like arrows in the hands of
- 48:53Speaker 2: a warrior are the children of one's youth.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them.
- 49:01Speaker 2: He shall not be put to shame when he speaks
- 49:03Speaker 2: with his enemies at the gate. Malachi 2, 15-16 Did
- 49:10Speaker 2: he not make them one with a portion of the
- 49:12Speaker 2: Spirit in their union?
- 49:14Speaker 1: And what was the one God's seed? Godly offspring. So
- 49:20Speaker 1: guard yourselves in your spirit and let none of you
- 49:23Speaker 1: be faithless to the wife of your youth.
- 49:27Speaker 2: The man who does not love his wife but divorces her,
- 49:32Speaker 2: says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers his garments
- 49:35Speaker 2: with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So guard yourselves
- 49:39Speaker 2: in your spirit And do.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Not be faithless. Secondly, I don't want.
- 49:46Speaker 2: To spend too much time on these, but first, again,
- 49:50Speaker 2: we do what we do because we're convinced by Scripture.
- 49:53Speaker 2: We're convinced by Scripture that we're obligated to give our
- 49:56Speaker 2: children a Christian education.
- 49:58Speaker 1: This is not opinion. This is what the Bible teaches clearly.
- 50:02Speaker 1: And secondly, we understand our role and responsibility as parents.
- 50:07Speaker 2: We only really need one text here. Ephesians 6, 1-4. Children,
- 50:11Speaker 2: obey your parents and the Lord, for this is right.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Honor your father and mother. This is the first commandment
- 50:16Speaker 2: of the promise, that if they go well with you,
- 50:18Speaker 2: and that.
- 50:18Speaker 1: You may live long in the land. Fathers, do not provoke.
- 50:22Speaker 2: Your children to anger, but bring them up in the
- 50:24Speaker 2: discipline and instruction to the Lord. Do you realize that fathers, parents,
- 50:28Speaker 2: are the only ones who are given the specific obligation
- 50:32Speaker 2: to train and educate children? You see, and we don't
- 50:40Speaker 2: have time for this, but this is a very John
- 50:45Speaker 2: Knox thing. There are jurisdiction and spheres of jurisdiction. There
- 50:54Speaker 2: is the jurisdiction of the state. There is the jurisdiction
- 50:57Speaker 2: of the church. There is the jurisdiction of the family.
- 51:01Speaker 2: We have these jurisdictions given to.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Us very clearly.
- 51:04Speaker 2: And it is not permitted for us to cross those jurisdictions, right?
- 51:13Speaker 2: As a family, I am not allowed to take over
- 51:17Speaker 2: the jurisdiction of the.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Church, right? And so it's not like I can excommunicate
- 51:24Speaker 1: a member of my family from the church. That's not
- 51:26Speaker 1: my jurisdiction. I can't take over the jurisdiction of the state.
- 51:30Speaker 2: I can't put one of my family members in jail
- 51:32Speaker 2: or I can't give one of my family members a ticket.
- 51:35Speaker 1: That's the jurisdiction of the state, right? And the state also.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Cannot usurp the jurisdiction of the church or the family.
- 51:45Speaker 1: It cannot.
- 51:47Speaker 2: Folks, this jurisdiction of education is a family jurisdiction. Now,
- 51:53Speaker 2: there is also a church jurisdiction as it relates to
- 51:56Speaker 2: educating all of God's people theologically. That's why the idea
- 52:00Speaker 2: of a Christian school is a permissible idea.
- 52:03Speaker 1: You see?
- 52:06Speaker 2: But when the state gets involved in education, it has
- 52:10Speaker 2: jumped jurisdictions. And this is why in most constitutions, except
- 52:15Speaker 2: the ones who have been changed recently, there is no.
- 52:19Speaker 1: Mention of education, the education of children. Right? And the U.S. Constitution,
- 52:25Speaker 1: the longest standing constitution in the world today, you know, we're.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Not that old of a country, but we have the
- 52:31Speaker 2: oldest standing constitution in the world.
- 52:34Speaker 1: There is no mention of education. The United States government
- 52:38Speaker 1: has no.
- 52:39Speaker 2: Jurisdiction and no authority whatsoever over education. The United States
- 52:45Speaker 2: Department of Education is unconstitutional and needs to be shut down.
- 52:55Speaker 2: They don't have a right to be involved, biblically or constitutionally.
- 53:00Speaker 2: And yet they usurp, and yet they overstep.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Okay? All right. Parents to children, number one, represent God's
- 53:08Speaker 1: authority in their lives.
- 53:09Speaker 2: Number two, model Christ's relationship to his church through our marriages.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Three, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of
- 53:16Speaker 1: the Lord.
- 53:16Speaker 2: Four, preach the gospel to them with a hint toward
- 53:21Speaker 2: their conversion.
- 53:23Speaker 1: All right? For the sake of time, I'm going to... Oh, wait.
- 53:28Speaker 1: I don't want to do that one. For the sake
- 53:30Speaker 1: of time, I'm going to... I'm going to move forward here.
- 53:48Speaker 1: Number three. Advancing the kingdom of God.
- 53:52Speaker 2: Advancing the kingdom of God. And this one is ironic
- 53:56Speaker 2: because there are a lot of Christian families who view
- 54:01Speaker 2: home education as a means of retreating.
- 54:05Speaker 1: And this is both inside and outside homeschooling. A lot
- 54:09Speaker 1: of people outside of homeschooling view it as retreat. And
- 54:12Speaker 1: that's why they make a soft light argument. Because they're going,
- 54:14Speaker 1: you know, we're in the world, but not of the world.
- 54:17Speaker 2: We're here, we're supposed to be proclaiming the gospel, and
- 54:19Speaker 2: you're running away.
- 54:20Speaker 1: You're running away and hiding.
- 54:21Speaker 2: Okay?
- 54:23Speaker 1: I mean, unfortunately, for a lot of us, that's absolutely
- 54:27Speaker 1: the case. For a lot of us, that is what
- 54:30Speaker 1: we're doing. Guilty as charged. We're scared. We're frightened.
- 54:34Speaker 2: We're running away. We're hiding. We don't want to engage.
- 54:37Speaker 2: We don't want to have anything to do with the world.
- 54:39Speaker 1: You know?
- 54:40Speaker 2: We don't want to go buy us some land and
- 54:41Speaker 2: not even have to go to the store anymore.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Okay? We don't want to see anybody. Alright? Wrong answer. Okay?
- 54:52Speaker 1: Wrong answer.
- 54:52Speaker 2: This is about advancing the kingdom of God, folks.
- 54:58Speaker 1: We are residents of the kingdom. Colossians 1, 13 and 14.
- 55:02Speaker 2: He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and
- 55:04Speaker 2: transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved son in
- 55:07Speaker 2: whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. We're heirs
- 55:12Speaker 2: of the kingdom. James 2.5. Listen, my beloved brothers, has
- 55:16Speaker 2: not God chosen.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Those who are poor in the world to.
- 55:20Speaker 2: Be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which
- 55:23Speaker 2: is promised those who love him? We're also seeking the kingdom.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Matthew 6, 31, 33. Therefore, do not be anxious, saying,
- 55:33Speaker 2: what shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or
- 55:35Speaker 2: what shall we wear? For the Gentiles seek after all
- 55:39Speaker 2: these things. And your Heavenly Father knows that you need
- 55:43Speaker 2: them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and
- 55:45Speaker 2: His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
- 55:49Speaker 2: We also preach the kingdom.
- 55:53Speaker 1: We preach the kingdom.
- 55:56Speaker 2: And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout
- 56:00Speaker 2: the whole world as a testimony to all nations.
- 56:04Speaker 1: And then the end will come. There is no room
- 56:07Speaker 1: in that for retreat. None. None.
- 56:17Speaker 2: Maybe retreat for respite. Maybe we go retreat so we
- 56:21Speaker 2: can regroup.
- 56:23Speaker 1: But just permanent retreat. We're not part of this battle anymore? No,
- 56:28Speaker 1: you don't get to do that. That's not who we are.
- 56:33Speaker 1: That's not who we are.
- 56:34Speaker 2: Listen, we're just beggars telling other beggars where we found bread.
- 56:41Speaker 1: How dare we retreat?
- 56:42Speaker 2: How dare we retreat from people who are starving and
- 56:46Speaker 2: dying like we were starving and dying when.
- 56:49Speaker 1: We have what they need? How dare we do that?
- 56:54Speaker 1: How dare we do that? How dare we sit comfortably
- 56:58Speaker 1: in the kingdom of.
- 56:59Speaker 2: God because of people who love God and us enough
- 57:03Speaker 2: to advance toward us with the gospel.
- 57:06Speaker 1: And then shut our mouths.
- 57:07Speaker 2: In our comfort and hide away without giving.
- 57:11Speaker 1: It away to somebody else. God help us.
- 57:14Speaker 2: That is not who we are. And we are anticipating
- 57:19Speaker 2: the consummation of the kingdom. And the seventh angel blew
- 57:23Speaker 2: his trumpet. And there was a loud voice in heaven saying,
- 57:27Speaker 2: the kingdoms of the world has become the kingdom of
- 57:30Speaker 2: our Lord and his Christ. And he shall reign forever
- 57:35Speaker 2: and ever. Even when the Lord taught us to pray,
- 57:39Speaker 2: what did he teach us to pray? Your kingdom come,
- 57:42Speaker 2: your will be done on earth.
- 57:44Speaker 1: As it is in heaven. This is our mentality. This
- 57:48Speaker 1: is our mindset. So we don't bring our children.
- 57:51Speaker 2: Home in order to hide them. I don't think about
- 57:59Speaker 2: my home as a hiding place for children. I think
- 58:03Speaker 2: about my home as a silo. And not a grain silo.
- 58:11Speaker 2: ICBM silo. Intercontinental ballistic missiles. You don't put ICBMs in
- 58:21Speaker 2: a silo because you're scared. You put them in there
- 58:25Speaker 2: to arm them.
- 58:28Speaker 1: So that one day, dawn comes.
- 58:32Speaker 2: The silo opens up, and they're launched to do all
- 58:35Speaker 2: kinds of damage.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Amen? I'm not hiding my children, I'm arming them. Amen?
- 58:44Speaker 1: I'm arming them. So if we see retreat in that sense, amen,
- 58:53Speaker 1: I'm with you.
- 58:54Speaker 2: But if it's retreat in the sense of We're the
- 58:57Speaker 2: only holy people in the world.
- 58:59Speaker 1: We need to go hide in our holy hole so
- 59:02Speaker 1: that nobody.
- 59:02Speaker 2: Can mess up our holiness and nobody can know.
- 59:07Speaker 1: That's the wrong answer.
- 59:11Speaker 2: Our goal is to advance the kingdom of God and.
- 59:15Speaker 1: To bless the kingdom of man. To bless the kingdom
- 59:19Speaker 1: of man.
- 59:22Speaker 2: See, when these ICBMs are launched, they don't do destructive
- 59:25Speaker 2: damage like intergovernmental ballistic missiles do. They bring healing and wholeness.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Because we launch them with the gospel. They give you
- 59:38Speaker 2: the tale.
- 59:39Speaker 1: Of two Christians.
- 59:43Speaker 2: There's the one Christian who says, I want to be
- 59:47Speaker 2: a physician. Well, why do you want to be a physician?
- 59:50Speaker 2: Because it's a job with a lot of prestige and
- 59:53Speaker 2: they make good money. And another one who says, I
- 59:59Speaker 2: want to be a physician. Why do you want to
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: be a physician? I want to be a physician because
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: people are made in the image of God. And as such,
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: they have inherent dignity and inherent worth and inherent value.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: And I want to use my hands to bring healing
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: and wholeness to people in the name of Jesus. Two
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: people who want the same job, but have completely different perspectives.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Are you equipping your children.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: With a vision for advancing the kingdom of God and
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: make a blessing to the kingdom of man? I'm just
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: afraid that for most of us, our children, they hear
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: what we say about the world out there.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: And the message that they get is those people are ugly.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: Those people are unworthy. Those people are unsafe.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: And you need to figure out a way to live
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: life as far away from them as possible.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: Instead of hearing from us and seeing from us, those
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: people are lost. Just like I was. And they need
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Jesus just like I did. So they can't teach you.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: I'm going to teach you.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: But I'm teaching you so that you can be equipped
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: to invest your life in advancing the kingdom among these people.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: Just like mom and dad invest our lives.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: And advancing the kingdom among these people.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Please tell me you.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Hear the vast difference between those two visions. Because they're
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: nowhere near the same. And unfortunately for most of us,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: what we're communicating.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: To our children is the former and not the latter.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: And so here's what's ironic.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Some of these children who want nothing to do with
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: home education It's not because they're rebelling against their godly families.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: It's because they're hearing the gospel proclaimed. They're seeing the
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: lostness and the hurt out there in the world. And
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: the Jesus in them wants to go and be a
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: healing balm. And their parents paint homeschooling as a way
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: to hide from the world that needs the healing that
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: we have.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: And they say, I don't want that. I want nothing
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: to do with that. I'm a Christian. People need the gospel.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: I will not run away and hide from a hurting world.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: It's not a bad rebellion at all. That's rebelling against
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: something that has stopped being Christian. So we do this
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: first and foremost because we're convinced by scripture that it's
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: the right thing to do. And secondly, we do this
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: because we understand our role and responsibility as parents.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: And we're not willing to give up on that.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: And thirdly, we do this because of our desire to
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: advance the kingdom of God. And we want to advance
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: the kingdom of God among our children. And we want
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: to equip our.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Children to advance the kingdom of God.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: And finally, we do this because we want to communicate
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: a vision of being a blessing to the kingdom of man.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: I'm not willing to argue that having this together in
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: our minds means that none of us will ever stumble
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: or fall. Or that it can just be another recipe, right?
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: And here you do this and your children will always,
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: you know, but that's not my point. But what I
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: am saying is I believe this is faithful description and
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: I believe God will bless it.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Let's pray.
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: Our God, we thank you for your goodness and your
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: kindness and your mercy towards us. We thank you for
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: the blessings and the grace that you have lavished upon us.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: Thank you for the privilege of being able to even.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Talk about this.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: There are places not far from here, just across the
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: water in Europe, where people don't have the right to
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: do what we're.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: Talking about here.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: And so, Lord, we thank you for your grace, for
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: your kindness, for your mercy that you've extended. And we ask, Lord,
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: that you would continue to be gracious to us here
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: in and that you would bless our brothers and sisters
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: in places like Germany and elsewhere where the children are
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: being taken away from them because of their desire to
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: do what we're talking about here tonight.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: Grant by your grace, Lord, that they might receive your
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: mercy and your protection.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: And also, grant, Lord, that we might see what is
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: happening there as a warning to us here today So
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: that we might fight to maintain the rights that we have.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: Not so that we can run and hide. Because we
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: believe that this is what scripture teaches us.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: Because we understand our role as parents.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Because we desire to expand the kingdom and we desire
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: to bless the.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: Kingdom of man.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: And so we ask, Lord, that the government here in
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: Ireland would not cut off its nose to spite its face.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: and attempt to rid itself of one of the greatest
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: blessings it will ever see. Father, I pray for all
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: those under the sound of my voice. For those who
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: are weary, God, would you grant them strength. For those
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: who are afraid, God, would you grant courage. For those
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: who are confused, grant clarity. And for those who have
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: given up, would you mount them up on wings as eagles.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: This we pray in Christ's name.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Amen.
