- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: Join me today as my co-host Eric Witticky.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh boy.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, boy, the Miami Dolphins just walked out of Spain with a dramatic chaotic, heart-pounding overtime win against the Washington Commanders, and it happened in the most improbable way, the very first play of overtime, quarterback Jack Jones jumps in Marcus Mario to throw and
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: That was a football game that I watched just now.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: It was certainly a game.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_00]: They want that, obviously it's not easy to fly across the Atlantic and all the preparation that goes into that.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: Man, it really feels like they want to completely despite themselves today.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I know we'll talk more about that.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean, yeah, I just, I don't know how I can even, I don't know how I feel about this game yet.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't processed it fully, it's good that they got the win, you know, it's never easy to go over in Europe and play those games in Washington, very physical football team, but
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm still trying to kind of gather my thoughts because I don't know what I just really watched for the last three hours or so.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: Well, look, they lost the coin tush initially for over time, but let's rewind a little bit back to that.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, the dolphins are backed up nearby, their gold line.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: 30, 11, a pass is in a pass, dropped by Jailum Water and Leeds to fourth down.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: Jake Bayley absolutely booms a punt.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: And Mikey Sandstrill, the commander's nickel defensive back, is back there in the punt return unit.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: Over a wide receiver Jailum Lane Jailum Lane was hurt on a previous drive he had a hip injury.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: So Mikey Sandistral, muffs the punt and the dolphin special teams coverage unit is coming straight down, just flying down the field and Ethan Bonner captures the football.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins have the ball with four minutes and 18 seconds left nearby midfield and what does Miami do?
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: They lean on the run game, they lean on Devon, they continuously pound the rock with six offensive linemen and they
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: But as always, this Dolphins team, they shoot themselves in the foot.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_01]: Devon H and takes another run, almost houses it, but steps out of bounds, went two minutes and 24 seconds left in the game.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: If he had stayed in bounds and had eaten the tackle,
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: It would have been two minutes right then and there.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins would have been able to drain the clock.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: The commanders would have to use all their time mounts.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: Miami would have star off first in goal with the two minute warning right then and there.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: Pound the rock at least three times make.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: the commanders use their timeouts and just drain the clock.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: It could have kicked the field gold and won.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: But no, that is not what happened.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I tweeted this out on next.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll go ahead and share it to everyone who doesn't necessarily follow me.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: But it was just a series of decision making that was just not perfectly executed.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: On 3rd and Gold, you don't pound it with Ali Gordon, you know, in a short-oriented situation to get the touchdown.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: You already did it on 3rd and Gold on the last touchdown drive.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: Not doing that leads to Devon, H.N.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: getting hurt and now it's 4th and Gold.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Now you have to use Ali Gordon, you have to pound the rock up the gut up the middle and the commander's read it instinctively and it's a turn over on downs.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: The turn on down.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't go for the field goal.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't go for the point.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you actually didn't have to go with all the Gordon on fourth down.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: You could have just kicked the field goal.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: Personally, I think that that might have been Mike McDaniel maybe kind of getting caught up in the moment there of, you know, maybe a little bit of regret on the play call on third down.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: And so he thought
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but you've got, you've got to take the points there.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_00]: There's, there's, there's just no, I, I just, I mean, I can't even, I can't even try to understand that decision on those last two plays.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: Fortunately, they, you know, Washington wasn't able to get in the field goal right or they did, but Matt, game missed his kick at the end of regulation.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and then the game played out the way that it did.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: in over time.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: But again, this just feels like another game and, you know, we, it feels like we've answered the question of, will Mike McDonald's players play for him?
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: The answer is yes, they will.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: But we, we've ran back into the continuum questions of, can Mike
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: make this a more disciplined football team and can Mike McDaniel handle the situational aspects of coaching in close games.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: And you get the win, but it just, again, against a better opponent, you're not getting away with those mistakes.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: No, you're not, but unfortunately they have a little bit of time to correct those mistakes heading in to the bio-week days, to play the jets, they also play the sains, they play the bangles who don't have Joe Burrow, we'll see what happens with them, the Steelers are inconsistent, then you have the Patriots as well.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: But now,
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: The Dolphins defense has been already leaky throughout the game.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: They held up very well in the red zone.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: They held to only field goals.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_01]: But again, Matt gave Mitch two, missed two field goals and the Dolphins got bailed out by that.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: They got bailed out by that.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: Again, Mitch Field asked to why the Dolphins went into OT.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: Now look, don't into OT.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: Tua says, we're going to get the ball second.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to get the ball second.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_01]: Just say, we're going to kick it.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: To an unknown need to make it hard, no need to make it complicated.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: And then they won the coin toss.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: They won the coin toss, and ultimately it worked.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: Like after the way this game was flowing, I mean, Washington was moving the football and they had weathered away this Dolphin's defensive physically, like there was real concern because guess what?
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: We talked about the six offensive linemen usage for Miami.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: We also talked about the six offensive linemen usage for the Washington Commanders.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: And the Commanders are much better than that.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: At running the football with six offensive linemen and passing the football, then Miami.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: And Anthony Weaver did not match the personnel with that multiple multiple times.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_01]: There was at least 11 plays.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: By my count, that watch had offensive linemen.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: And they were successful on most of them.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: We head into overtime, okay?
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: Marcus Mario da opens overtime with a play action quick hitter.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: Something that the commanders had leaned on all game from their heavy set from six offence of lunch.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: But Jack Jones read the route combination perfectly.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Just of all people, Jack freaking Jones.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's, you know, an interception for Jack Jones who had a lot of boneheaded plays.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: a lot of miscuses and mistakes and penalties.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: He jumps the past and turns Santiago Bernabot into hard rock stadium into a south Florida celebration.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: This is the type of defensive play that the Miami Dolphins defense had needed to make earlier in the year in those moments where the game is on the line.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: And now for the last two weeks,
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: they've been making them.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: Now by accident, not by luck, maybe by putting players in correct positions with Anthony Weaver has to do, but also the players actually executing the plays.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to say that this is the new Miami Dolphins defense, but this is how teams win very gutsy, very gory games.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: You need to be disciplined.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: You have to have tight coverage.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: You have to
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: The Miami Dolphins offense did not finish well on third-end shorts and they've been amazing on third-end shorts all again.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: Not sure what happened there will have to dive into the film.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: Same thing with the Washington Commanders.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_01]: They couldn't do a lot of damage on third-end shorts and fourth-end shorts either.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_01]: Both defenses for the Commanders and the Dolphins were able to hold the third-end shorts and fourth-end shorts for the opposing offences.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: Now look,
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: Coach Smith said in and you know, he's not he's not here today.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: He's off.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: But he's said it that this game will come down to whoever Makes or whoever creates turnover or makes the turnover and capitalizes on it and guess what that actually happened Yeah, I mean ultimately it was Washington kind of making the crucial mistakes at the end of the game between the muff pun and the Interception there and over time
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: you brought up third and fourth down and it just again I just feel like some of the decision making in those it feels like what ended up happening in a lot of those plays where were the dolphins Mike McDaniel was trying to break tendency on early downs
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: and he kind of painted himself into a corner where they had to go back to their bread and butter stuff and it kind of felt like everyone in the stadium and watching at home kind of knew what was going to be coming on some of those third and fourth downplays.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I understand, you know, you want to take those risks on the downs where maybe you can bank some plays.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: But right now at 3 and 7, I just don't know 4 and 7 now 4 and 7 4 and 7 4 and 7, but 3 and 7 at the time, I don't know if you can really, you know, It just felt like he was outsmarting himself a little bit in some of those situations.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I want to say one thing before we go into our next segments.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: stepped in bounds, right?
- 13:06[SPEAKER_01]: Before that played, the Dolphins win probability when that happened was over 80%.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_01]: When he didn't do that and when he got hurt on the third and goal, the Dolphins win probability went to 50%.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then right after that,
- 13:27[SPEAKER_01]: when they did not convert on fourth down, Washington's win probability jumped up to 55%.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: So they really, really screwed the pooch on their Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins offense of unit, really, really screwed the pooch in terms of win probability right there.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, I also, on third down,
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: Number one, obviously we talked about it.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: I would just go, I would have repeated what you did on the last drive from the one yard line that had success.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it wouldn't work.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: There's no guarantee it would have.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: And then secondly, it felt like they were getting a lot more push when they were running behind Jonas Avania and Patrick Paul.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then the decision to run that behind Cole Strange was strange to me, actually, no pun intended.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: Um, at the end of the day, though, you get the win, you kind of escape or you do escape.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: You don't kind of escape.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: You get the win.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: It counts as the same as any other win.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but there are certainly things from a,
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: from a, you know, standpoint of situational football that you have to clean up.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: I do think that the offensive line, I thought that was a positive for a lot of the game.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think Dan Quinn did a good job mixing in some of those DB blitzes and the dolphins didn't do a particularly good job of, you know, picking those up if they do get picked up, I think this game looks a lot different at the end of the first half.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_00]: You know, because it kind of felt like again in the first half Miami was was should have been up, you know, 13, 16, 16, something like that at the end of the half, but
- 15:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the game played out of the offense was cooking.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it was early.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they were cooking on those early downs.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: And they couldn't finish.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_01]: And it goes back to what they were in late September and early October.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_01]: They were getting there, but just the drives weren't finishing because you had either a penalty, a miscue.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they went with what was working on third and short.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: but it didn't work at all because guess what?
- 15:56[SPEAKER_01]: Dan Quinn and the Washington Commander's defense sniffed out their tendencies.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_01]: When you have a tendency being sniffed, you want to change it up, you know, why not do a mesh play on third and two, right?
- 16:10[SPEAKER_01]: Why not do, you know,
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: a flat route or a Texas screen to devon a chain, you know, they're going to sell out to stop the run.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_01]: Guess what happens if you are trying, you know, to be a blitz discipline,
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you throw those quick throws and especially on those third downs and in the red zone, the commanders defense, you know, set slot blitzes or defensive back blitzes and the offensive line and Alec Engel cannot pick up those blitzes very well and it just led to missed opportunities.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_01]: it lets you, you know, three points instead of seven as well and it just led to drives being stalled out.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: We know this dolphin's defense is not due well with defensive back blitzes, but if you go back to the tendencies, Washington is middle of the pack and sending defensive back blitzes, but they have around a 15th or 16th, they're ranked 15th or 16th in terms of defense
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: not good, not bad, but that's something you should also scalp or that's something you should take note of.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, and the other thing offensively that I think was kind of, I don't want to say exposed because I don't think it's something that's going to be a flaw for much longer as, you know, they get more familiar with each other, but you definitely saw a
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: lack of early chemistry between two and Greg Dolcech today, you know, some of those throws, it just looked like two was expecting Dolcech to either be looking over his other shoulder or continue the route more upfield.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's something that's going to end up inevitably getting sorted out.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: Jalen Water, I can't really explain what happened to him today.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: I, you know, that drop that on third down there was, I mean, absolutely heartbreaking, you know, you, the ball gets dropped at the end of regulation, not say that I think they would have gotten themselves in the fuel will range there, but again, it's just another crucial drop and
- 18:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this kind of felt like a game where at least to me, he was primed to go off and really have a big game and it looked like in the first half he might have been heading for it, but I, you know, I'm just
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's just weird things happening all around in that game.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the defense, I think the turnaround is trending up work, but it was, it wasn't good very early on, right?
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they got ran all over by Chris Rodriguez almost about A.R.'
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: 's precary, give it up on that.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_01]: But guess what, situationally, they got the job done.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_01]: on late downs.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: They did not allow a lot of touchdowns.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: They only settled for fuel go points and
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: They were also helped by Matt Gaet, you know, just missing two kicks.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think the big thing out of this defense is Juju Brent's going down.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: You had to have Ethan Bonner in the game.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: Jason Marshall Jr. made some timely plays.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_01]: He had some timely tackles.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_01]: The big one, though, was Mink of Fitzpatrick, getting his ankles taken towards the end of the half.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: That was just a bust.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: That was just a blow and coverage.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_01]: But,
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'll ask you this and this is this is coming from our own Lewis song Mike McDaniel continues to to give him emotional damage a win is a win, but Do you think he deserves to keep his job if they go on or run like this like,
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like this, no, if they play this game, you know, continually down the stretch, I don't really see if there, I don't see that they would be able to do so, at least not in my estimation.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_00]: happening there with McDaniel is, you know, again, it's just, it's the same mistake repeating, right?
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: If you play this game down the stretch four or five straight times and you win by the skin of your teeth and it's kind of despite the head coach and don't get me wrong late, they did win kind of despite the head coach today.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_00]: And to be really fair to Mike McDaniel, I thought the offensive game plan was decent.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: I thought he was.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: In general, sticking with the run game, I like the inclusion of a lot more Oli Gordon.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_00]: We saw more of him today.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: The Von H. and again, you know, continues to get a lot of work.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: I was very concerned for him at the end of the ball game, kind of getting just broken in half by two Washington defensive linemen, but the,
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: the short answer there is no he would not deserve to keep his job in my estimation if they if they wouldn't like this now if they go on a run and it's because you know they suddenly start to look like a well-oiled machine and they're disciplined and you know they're they're executing in in these crucial moments that's a whole different conversation
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: but if it's gonna look like this, then I think the answer is no.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the big thing was the laid-down execution because early down's Miami was great, but they had a negative point, negative point nine to E-Paper play on 34 down.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_01]: Late rush is was negative 1.34 less than 30% success rate.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_01]: As well, it was just,
- 22:09[SPEAKER_01]: You can say it was bad, play calling, bad execution, but there are certain things that can be done to mitigate those issues.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_01]: But we have to talk about this Dolphins offensive transformation.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: This wasn't a 400 yard firework show performance that we're used to.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_01]: This was a heavy set personal Dolphins team that was running the football and identity they built since week seven.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: Daniel Brunskill as a sixth offensive lineman condensed from formation using motions morsel for leverage instead of misdirection, just the commitments are running the football even when the defense expects it.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's so much on the the late downs because because I feel like the doff of the
- 22:56[SPEAKER_01]: the commander's defensive line played their gap soundly, but on early downs they really got the chains moving.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: Now look, this is not a trend.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like this is more so of a knuckleball and a change up where they're still executing well.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_01]: They're being very successful and it's
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: have 16 to 17 snaps by my count.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_01]: We had Greg Dolcech have snaps.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_01]: We had Hayden Ruchi have snaps.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_01]: We had Julian Hill also have snaps as well.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_01]: So they are going very heavy into 12, 13, six offense and lineman.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I finally have this advanced statistics pulled up.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_01]: The Miami Dolphins ran 17 plays with Daniel Brunskill there.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, the NFL games have just started.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's one PM.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: So we only have the commanders, the dolphins, the Patriots, and the Jets data.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_01]: So far.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_01]: 17 plays with six offensive linemen is a lot.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: They were getting 7.3 yards per attempt.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_01]: 6.3 yards per play.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: They rushed 11 times out of those 17 and they had the best success rate out of those four teams so far.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: 63.6 percent.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: However, they had a negative EPA per rush on it.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: Why?
- 24:31[SPEAKER_01]: Because of the execution on late downs.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_01]: Either due to misguz, blown assignments, or the commander's defensive line playing really, really good, you know, gap discipline.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, when passing the ball, EPA per drop back, point two, nine, two, a day really, really well.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: And look, the data just changed.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: 22 plays with Daniel Brunsky when they're 22 plays with six offensive linemen instead of 17.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_01]: The dolphins had a 50% rust success, right?
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: So 50% of the time, they did well 50% of the time, they didn't get what they need.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_01]: on first downs to get first downs when they ran the ball, they got it almost 44% of the time.
- 25:22[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll get successful.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: They were getting it done with six offensive linemen and is continuing to be an offensive trend and somewhat of an offensive identity that they can continuously use up against opposing defenses because they're not matching the personnel.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_01]: They don't know
- 25:42[SPEAKER_01]: where they might be running because you can see Daniel Brunsky moving in motion.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_01]: He could be, you know, attach in line.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_01]: He could be detached.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: He could be on the left side.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_01]: He could be on the right side.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: He could also be playing as the full bat.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: Where could the run go?
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes he's not even the lead blockers.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: So it's confusing for these defenses to figure out a mitigate where the run may go to.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think the next evolution of it is going to be, and it's going to be something that makes fans a little uncomfortable.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that it's necessary is they're going to have to start passing out of those six offensive alignment formations in those third and fourth, you know, and short situations.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_00]: if just to show, just to put it on tape, just so teams understand that Mike McDaniel is willing to go there and he's willing to do it.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_00]: Because it does feel like part of the reason why it's as successful as it is on first down and second down is because the dolphins have shown their extremely sick.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_00]: They're also extremely proficient throwing the football.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_00]: out of those six offensive linemen formations on early downs, and I think that they're gonna have to show teams that they're willing to throw the ball out of those formations in those situations as well, because otherwise, you know, you know, third and one, fourth and one, dolphins line up heavy, they're gonna run the football.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: You may not know where it's going, but you generally have an idea that it's going to be a straight hand off between the tackles.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_01]: and look to a had six pass attempts with six offensive laner with Daniel Brunschkeel.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_01]: in the game, he had 50% success rate, negative EPA, 97.2 passer rating, and 8.8 yards per completion.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: He was blitz 33% of the time, and I'll tell you what the yardages were on those six.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_01]: Glenn Strout.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: Then, first in 10, it's 229 in the first quarter, five yard past to Devon Hane.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: Then, second quarter, two yards to Devon Hane.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_01]: Then, 14 yards of Julian Hill at the 10 minute 35 mark to Julian Hill that went for 14 yards.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_01]: Then the arm punt on first and down in the third quarter around the two minute 50 mark, he threw it very, very deep to jail and water.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't hit him in his hands.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: It could have been a pig.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: But the pocket was clean.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_01]: The pocket was very clean.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: He could have had a dump off to Devon H8.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: Could have gained maybe seven eight yards.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: His EPA per plan went down on that plate.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_01]: So it is success rate.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_01]: top of the fourth quarter, first in 10, nine yards to Devon H and so look, you're getting the ball moving with six off ends of line with Daniel Brunsky and they're with Hayden Ruchi or Julian Hill and Greg Dullsich as an extra tie-it-end.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_01]: The pasting game can be functional with six offends of linemen.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_01]: You don't necessarily have a wide receiver too to complement jail and water of Malik Washington is not at that level yet and you can make the argument that Devon Hane is you're running back one and wide receiver too.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_01]: At this point, but it can be done.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you know, to just to give Malik Washington a little bit of credit here.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: I thought in the second half you had some really nice run after the catch plays, but you're right.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_00]: He's not a suitable wide receiver too.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: I do think, again, as that chemistry with a guy like Greg Dolcech grows, I think he's going to become a bigger part of the passing game, and I think that's necessary for this team to continue to grow and make that next evolution offensively.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: But again, I mean, you mentioned it right there.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like a majority of those past plays came on first and second down.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, they did, they did.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_00]: And so again, you know, that's something that, and maybe, because I know NFL coaches think like this and I know maybe that's something to set up future opponents down the road for, hey, I'm going to ZIG when you think I'm going to Zag, but at the same time, it just again, it kind of feels like, when you, if you're not,
- 30:30[SPEAKER_00]: If you're Mike McDaniel, and you are holding things back, that's kind of a dangerous game to play against a capable commander's defense.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_00]: but I think that there are things to build off of with that set and I think that that's something that's only gonna become a bigger part of the offense as we go along.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully, you know, this wasn't a flash in the pan kind of performance for Ali Gordon because I still don't love the idea of Devon H. and getting 20 plus carries every single week.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, it just doesn't feel sustainable
- 31:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it doesn't at all, but look, he's also the engine of this song and if he gets hurt, what is this offense going to do?
- 31:21[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, without Devon Hain, his explosiveness is on unmatched, like he's
- 31:27[SPEAKER_01]: He got almost three yards per carry after a con-packed, okay?
- 31:32[SPEAKER_01]: Almost three yards per carry after contact is a offensive line blocking while at the second level and a chain using his vision and, you know, his slipperyness to gain more yards after those contacts.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: They really need to be careful on his usage.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he's been fantastic, but
- 31:52[SPEAKER_01]: Get all the Gordon involved.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_01]: Get you have jail and right for a reason.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: jail and right had to, once, once that, one snap on offense, just one snap any had a successful one.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_01]: Let's try to get these running backs involved a little bit more, give Devon H, in some rest.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we were all holding our breath when he was down for a while on the field, we were like, oh, you know, we're like, okay, we know he's got about, he's got about a week after this, but what if he's extended, you know, out for an extended time period.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: That's when the conversation shifts, oh boy, what is his dolphin's offence is gonna do?
- 32:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the answer is I don't know if they would be able to do much without Devon H and you know, and and to to I guess kind of flip things over because we have spent a lot of time on the offense.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, defensively.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_00]: It was a really mixed bag today.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think Washington was extremely efficient with what they were doing, particularly with those six offensive line sets.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_00]: But I will say it's deceptive in that the Dolphins defensive front didn't get bullied.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think they were more so victims of the numbers game and good offensive scheming by Cliff Kingsbury.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_00]: because I was watching Kenneth Grant and Jordan Phillips and Benito Jones and those guys were making plays.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_00]: They were beating their guys.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_00]: They weren't getting run over per say.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was just a really good scheme decision by Kingsbury to create the numbers
- 33:41[SPEAKER_00]: makes things look a little bit worse to maybe they actually were.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_00]: In the passing game, I was a little bit more disappointed, although I think that there were some plays looking at the passenger appearance on Jack Jones certainly in the first half that really needlessly kind of extended
- 34:05[SPEAKER_00]: But that's where I was a little bit more disappointed was with the secondary, but I don't think the defensive line.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think framing this is they just got run over or would be really inaccurate.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think this was more of a strategic win for Washington than a physical one.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if you take a look at their numbers on early down, early rushing, they still have a negative heat paper play, but it's a negative 0.03.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_01]: That's almost a positive already, 40% success rate on first and second down for that 38% of those runs went for first downs.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about those six offensive linemen that they were running with when they were running the ball.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: They had 13 design rushes for 70 yards gained 5.4 yards per rush and the longest rush this Dolphins defense gave up was 17 yards.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_01]: 46% of their rushes out of those six offense alignment sets went for first downs.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_01]: They were 50% when they did it on third down and guess what though.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_01]: because of the six offensive linemen and also Chris Rodriguez's vision and being able to win the gaps, they had 3.540 yards per rush after Gontek.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_01]: So they got additional rushes and the thing was
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: This defense looked like nothing, how they played against Buffalo.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: They were missing tackles.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_01]: They were losing the number of games in the trenches.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: And you can see it in the statistics, 3.5, 4 yards per carry.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_01]: after getting contact 1.85 yards per carry before there was any contact.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_01]: So that's at least four yards that they were giving up and that's dead by paper cuts.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_01]: And then you marry that with the passing game.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_01]: You also marry that with a no-huttle offense.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_01]: Washington ran, you know, when I saw coming into this game on the graphic on the game,
- 36:11[SPEAKER_01]: 8% of their snaps are no huddle.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: The Anthony Weaver was trying his best to match the personnel, but Washington was just getting out of the huddle where they were just moving so fast that, you know, they were losing the numbers game, they were losing on personnel, and that's what kind of bit them in the run game and the passing game.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, certainly.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think individually certain guys had pretty good performances.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think Jason Marshall played a decent game all things considered.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think you can say the same thing about Mink for the most part, I think Jack Jones played a pretty good game.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_00]: Like I look at a lot of these guys and I think that they played.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_00]: pretty well.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_00]: I was a little disappointed in the past rush at points in this game, because it felt like when Washington did kind of line up in more traditional past sets, there wasn't a lot of pressure on Marriota.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_00]: But the only guy that I do fault on that play and there's one player that I'm a little disappointed with there and it's Willie Gay kind of getting caught flat footed in the open field.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_00]: But aside from that, that was just, you know, Miami Designed pressure to come from the left side almost exclusively completely vacated the right side created a whole really, I mean, what are you going to do there that was that was scheme thing.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think the the other thing though is when he did get pressure and he did get to Mariota.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_00]: You are cost two points on the on the intentional grounding that was not.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_01]: Can we talk about how.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_01]: the refs were just terrible.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_01]: They got to have been paid really handsomely by draft kings or someone else like that because it was some of these calls like the Jack Jones D. P. I was in a trotters didn't call the intentional grounding they missed multiple holes.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_01]: It was just bad.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_01]: they called, you know, the first driver of the game on fourth down.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_01]: All in Gordon got the first on the fourth down run, and they called it a delay of game, but they snapped it right at the one second.
- 38:44[SPEAKER_01]: They jumped that move it on on that.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_01]: And that killed the offense is momentum, right then.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_00]: And then I, you know, it's at the end of the third quarter,
- 39:00[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like they'll usually give you that off-sides call.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't get me, like I've seen that exact scenario play out.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_00]: No big deal with my yards.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, not not there really it was not pretty for the fans in Mother Druid.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'll say it wasn't the best Display of football In Madrid and of course, obviously under the lights of Santiago Bernabelle The Miami Dolphins proved that they are playing really really hard for Mike McDaniel and the rest of the coaches and proved that they can win ugly
- 39:36[SPEAKER_01]: they can win physical, they can win in overtime.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_01]: And they can win when the offense can score points and the defense can do some damage.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_01]: Jack Jones delivered the moment.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_01]: Devon, A-Chain, an offensive line delivered the dagger and the Miami Dolphins delivered a message.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_01]: This has been scouting the Finn stick with us here on the three arch per carry podcast.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm your host, who's not but tell all my co-host, Eric Whitticke, Gulfins, baby.
