- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Placid and Companions, October 5 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's saints, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, the holiness of Benedict in his grotto at Subiaco soon drew around him many disciples of which the two greatest were Saint Maris, Apostle of the Benedictine Order in France and Saint Placid. Both were committed to the care of the holy patriarch. The former at 12 years of age and the latter when a child of four years old by their parents who belonged to the most illustrious patrician families of Rome.
- 1:01Under the guidance of such a master, they made rapid progress in holiness. Saint Benedict had a special predilection for young Placid. And just as the savior chose certain of his disciples to be witness of his miracles, so he liked to be accompanied by the pious child when God gave him miracles to work. On one occasion, while drawing water from the Lake Of Subiaco, Placid fell in and the waves carried him far from the shore. The man of God sent Maris who walking miraculously on the waters, saved him.
- 1:48Having with Saint Morris followed Saint Benedict to Monte Cassino, he became one of the firmest supporters of the great patriarch of the Western monks. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. When affliction comes, the Lord is the refuge and defense of the innocent.
- 2:22Allay thy impatience with the wicked. Envy not the lot of evildoers. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. When affliction comes, the Lord is the refuge in defense of the innocent.
- 2:51The Collect. Let us pray. O God, who does permit us to celebrate the heavenly birthday of thy holy martyrs, Placid and his companions, grant that we may rejoice in their fellowship in everlasting bliss through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews.
- 3:33Brethren, remember those early days when the light first came to you and the hard probation of suffering you went through. There were times when you yourselves were publicly exposed to calumny and persecution. There was a time when you took part with those who had the same path to tread. You showed your sympathy with those who were in bonds. And when you were robbed of your goods, you took it cheerfully as men who knew that a higher, a more lasting good was yours.
- 4:14Do not throw away that confidence of yours with its rich hope of reward. You still need endurance if you are to attain the prize God has promised to those who do his will. Only a brief moment now before he who is coming will be here. He will not linger on the way. It is faith that brings life to the man whom I accept as justified.
- 4:51The gradual. Roused by the cry of the innocent, the Lord set them free from all their afflictions. So near is he to the crushed heart, so ready to defend the humbled spirit. Alleluia, alleluia. To thee, O Lord, the white robed host of martyrs give glory.
- 5:19Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, have nothing to do with the leaven of the Pharisees. It is all hypocrisy. What is veiled will all be revealed.
- 5:44What is hidden will all be known. What you have said in darkness will be repeated in the light of day. What you have whispered in secret chambers will be proclaimed on the housetops. And I say this to you who are my friends. Do not be afraid of those who can kill the body and after that do no more.
- 6:10I will tell you who it is you must fear. Fear him who has power not only to kill but to cast a man into hell. Him you must fear indeed. Are not sparrows sold five for 2p? And yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight.
- 6:34As for you, he takes every hair of your head into his reckoning. Do not be afraid then. You count for more than a host of sparrows. And I tell you this, whoever acknowledges me before men will be acknowledged by the Son of Man in the presence of God's angels. The offertory.
- 7:03The souls of the just are in the hands of God beyond the reach of their tormentors malice. Dead? Fools think so, but all is well with them. The secret. We offer to thee, oh Lord, the gifts of our devotion.
- 7:25May they be pleasing to thee, honorable to thy saints, and through thy mercy, salutary to us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, o holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, The power stand in awe. The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify.
- 8:28We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
- 9:04The communion. What I have said to you under cover of darkness you are to utter in the light of day are the words of the Lord. What has been whispered in your ears you are to proclaim on the housetops. The post communion. Let us pray.
- 9:28Grant us, we beseech thee, o Lord, through the intercession of thy holy martyrs, Placid and his companions, that what we take with the mouth, we may receive with a pure heart through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Let us bless the Lord.
- 10:14Saint Placid and his companions, pray for us.
