- 3:26Yes, yes. Everybody's gonna hear this
- 3:28podcast. We're like, hey, UTP watch out.
- 3:33He's gonna hit his own spot. Alex aside from tp'ing, his own
- 3:40house. He does a lot.
- 3:42You're like it. Well, I've heard a lot of
- 3:44things, you're a musician. You You're been in a band lead
- 3:49singer for various bands. You own various businesses,
- 3:53you're a Serial entrepreneur from Kirby's Beer, Store,
- 3:56Lucky's barleycorn's. So used to, yeah, I sold the I
- 4:00sold that. But yeah, the Cotillion.
- 4:02Mmm love and tonic correct. And soon to be Solly and Judes.
- 4:07Correct. And I'm sure that there's a lot
- 4:10more and we've probably already lost count and forgot to mention
- 4:14that some some are working the works.
- 4:16He was Well, sure. You never know, never know.
- 4:19That's true. Yep.
- 4:20No, you are. You're accurate and your
- 4:21depiction of what I've done. Yeah, we hear you've done a lot.
- 4:25Oh, and you like to stick your tongue out.
- 4:28Oh, and do some type of tongue. Yeah, okay.
- 4:31Yeah that's a little bit. Yes.
- 4:32Yes. I do have tongue tricks.
- 4:34Yes, that is accurate. I bet your fiancé loves you.
- 4:37I guess. I plead the fifth.
- 4:43We'll have to give her a call right now.
- 4:45I'm going to ask her. Hey Yeah.
- 4:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:47I'm getting white. You know, she's you wouldn't be
- 4:51the first person that has asked her that because she comes to
- 4:53the concert. So sometimes it's an awkward.
- 4:56I've been doing that. I've been doing that tongue
- 4:58trick since I was in an original band when I was like 18 or 19.
- 5:01I don't know how it started. It just because we were playing
- 5:06like this Guns, N Roses cover and my original band and somehow
- 5:10I was just led to do it because I'd watch Gene Simmons and kiss
- 5:13all my life. Yeah.
- 5:14So I just kind of emulate it. And then, Then it kind of stuck
- 5:18but usually it is an awkward conversation talking about
- 5:23because most of the time people come up.
- 5:24So do the tongue thing and like I bet every girls.
- 5:28Like damn that's usually the dude that asks me though.
- 5:32So my girlfriend weird right now bro.
- 5:41You're gonna steal all the bitches?
- 5:44No, no, I'm all business. Yes.
- 5:47I mean, yeah, we hear. You're definitely all business,
- 5:49but you're definitely, you have your time to have fun, too.
- 5:52Yeah, yeah, sure. I mean, owning, I mean, owning
- 5:55these spots is fun. I mean, that's why I did, you
- 5:57know, I had corporate jobs. I did a, I've done a lot of
- 6:01things through life, but, yeah, this is where I'm happiest.
- 6:04And I like, creating and providing spaces for people and
- 6:07entertaining people. So that's what kind of drives
- 6:11me. Well, thank you for doing that
- 6:13here in this city of Wichita. Well, I Very welcome.
- 6:17I get thanked a lot. I just kind of do what I do.
- 6:19I don't know your go get saved. A lot of businesses from closing
- 6:23like Isis out. We're also like or, you know,
- 6:27you also came in purchase them and try to still bring in and
- 6:32incorporate the things out. The crowd, wanted the original
- 6:35customers that they wanted. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:37That's accurate. I, you know, it's just for
- 6:43Kirby's. I mean that was the first bar I
- 6:45bought. I mean I was Is a customer
- 6:47there. So I kind of knew what everyone
- 6:50wanted to retain but I also have my own ideas.
- 6:54I don't know that. I you know I've heard that
- 6:56before you came in and saved Kirby's, I mean someone else
- 6:58would have bought Kirby's and kept it alive.
- 7:00So I just I think it was I knew what needed to be done and you
- 7:06know I've had Partners I now have a partner in Kirby's that
- 7:11kind of passed the torch to and he's the kind of you know the
- 7:15day-to-day Keeper of the Place. And, and so, that's what it's
- 7:18about, you know, when I bought Kirby's, I didn't ever think I
- 7:23was going to be a bar owner, you know, I never operated a bar.
- 7:26I'd operated my own business, but it was a learning curve.
- 7:31So, yeah, it was interesting a lot has changed.
- 7:34Since then, it's about. That's about 15 years ago.
- 7:36So, yeah. So look at you.
- 7:38That's what go back to us, 15 years ago.
- 7:40Sure, yeah. So, what brought you here to
- 7:42Kansas? Oh, yeah.
- 7:43So I was born in Ipoh. Asia, and my dad was, he worked
- 7:52in veterinary science. So he was a part of a large
- 7:55Indian family that had 14 brothers and sisters.
- 8:00Well, brothers and sisters. Yeah, that is for me to say.
- 8:06That's a lot. That's a lot.
- 8:08And so, you know, he two of his brothers were doctors and they
- 8:14couldn't afford to send hint like, The guys that got the best
- 8:18grades went to medical school and he was the third in line,
- 8:21but the oldest and they sent him to Veterinary College in
- 8:26England. And so he came back, was working
- 8:30at a research facility in Malaysia.
- 8:32But in 1978, when I was two years old Malaysia, the Brits
- 8:40basically you know still have possession of those colonies,
- 8:43Malaysia and India and in 78 they laughed and Turned over
- 8:47control to the native malays, but what that created was kind
- 8:50of a situation, he was Indian. So he was getting passed over
- 8:53for promotions and he decided to follow his brothers to America
- 8:57to Chase the American dream and he opened up a vet clinic in
- 9:00Topeka. That's where we ended up.
- 9:04Yeah. Nice.
- 9:04Yeah, because his brothers were there.
- 9:06So, yeah. So I grew up in Topeka and then
- 9:10went to college at Southwestern, Okay, and then, move up to
- 9:14Wichita to work a software job and all this time from College
- 9:18on, I was playing in a band called.
- 9:19Oh, Phil and oh, Phil played a lot at Kirby's, beer store and
- 9:26we played all around we toured around.
- 9:28So that's how I got kind of involved with Kirby's.
- 9:30It was like our home base. Yeah.
- 9:33And then when I moved up to Wichita to work, another
- 9:35software job, then I started. I bought a house near Kirby's
- 9:40and I just would go there all the time.
- 9:41I knew the only, Her really well.
- 9:43He came to my wedding, you know, you came to visit me when I was
- 9:45sick in the hospital and went to visit him when he was sick in
- 9:48the hospital and then he passed away suddenly at Harry's
- 9:52actually. Yeah he his second favorite
- 9:54place to go was Harry's and he would always go there and have a
- 9:57drink after he was done with his shift at Kirby's.
- 10:00And he one day he ordered a drink and then he turned around
- 10:04and he was like slumped over he was dead.
- 10:06So yeah so then it was a curb Eames was kind of thrown into
- 10:10flux and no one knew what was happening.
- 10:12Sister kind of negotiated the sale and after long negotiation,
- 10:17I ended up with it so and at the time I was doing like contract
- 10:22graphic design, web design and I was like just I was going like
- 10:27this was going to just be an investment but then the bar life
- 10:30kind of took over. Yeah.
- 10:32Yeah. And now dang.
- 10:34Yeah. So like from so how about you
- 10:36though before we continue back into like work stuff like, tell
- 10:41us how many siblings Things. Do you have two brothers and a
- 10:45sister? And they're all older.
- 10:47I was an accident. Okay.
- 10:48My parents were quite a bit older and like, my mom had me
- 10:51when she was 39. So I was definitely like a UPS,
- 10:54so not so, because it's so my brother.
- 11:00Apparently they weren't practicing the tried and true
- 11:02method of pulling out. Really.
- 11:07Not a tried-and-true kids out there, listen to this podcast,
- 11:10don't that's not a good method. It's not a good method and we
- 11:13can always practice safe sex. Condoms best.
- 11:17Yeah, but yeah, I know. So I have two brothers and
- 11:22sisters. So do our they business owners
- 11:24have like, did you kind of grow up in the sense that you were
- 11:27going to lean towards sex? Well, so my dad owned operated,
- 11:31his old his own clinic. So I got to kind of be around
- 11:34all the boys worked in the clinic.
- 11:36You know. I mean I clean dog and I don't
- 11:39know. Yeah, I cleaned kennels, you
- 11:41know? No, with newspaper mind, you
- 11:46know, kennels with piss and shit.
- 11:48Just soaking them in my dad had no problems telling me to go in
- 11:51and clean that stuff up and I can I can smell it to this day.
- 11:54I don't know if you've ever smell piss and shit.
- 11:56Soaked newspaper with like dog hair combined and it's a
- 12:01wonderful smell like urge you all to maybe go out and
- 12:04experience it for yourself, but that's what I did that's going
- 12:07to sell. Yeah, pretty fast now.
- 12:08So that's what I did can do with that.
- 12:12I'm at my dad was not bashful to put us to work.
- 12:14So yeah, we all worked in the clinics but I also got to seem
- 12:16like pay bills and run like, you know, the front side customer
- 12:21stuff and, you know, so I grew up around that, you know, I saw
- 12:24him carry a briefcase to work with a checkbook for the
- 12:27business and I still use he, you know, he's passed away.
- 12:30I've got that same briefcase that I remember.
- 12:35And I used it for a couple Cotillion, you know, drops where
- 12:39we were paying artist and you had to go withdraw cash, I would
- 12:41do the same thing. I still use the same.
- 12:43Most of the bars are still use the same checkbook, Ledger that
- 12:45he had, which is the 3-ring. You know, three panel check
- 12:48thing that I always remember him writing checks on so so yeah.
- 12:51I mean I kind of came up with that but my brother is a doctor.
- 12:55My sister I went to law school but she's an insurance agent.
- 12:58My other brother is a retired, homicide detective from
- 13:00Lawrence. Wow so we all kind of just went
- 13:03you're all very eclectic. Yeah absolutely yeah yeah, Asian
- 13:08Asian thing. Oh yeah, you know as you're not
- 13:11a doctor you're not alone. Horn engineer engineer.
- 13:14That's the thing. And I was, I was a software
- 13:16engineer. So like, you know, it was, that
- 13:18was the thing. We are dad was not down with
- 13:21bees and and he was, he pushed education, we none of us had,
- 13:26you know, a college fund. We had to go on Pell Grants.
- 13:29We were, you know, the thing is, he was well-to-do in Malaysia
- 13:32but we were, you know, lower middle class in America.
- 13:36And so, we were struggling. I'm definitely like the
- 13:39Immigrant thing. Oh yeah, yeah, it's just Asian
- 13:41like No, yeah, exactly. Yeah. 100%.
- 13:44Yeah, every one of them want a better life for the kids and
- 13:48they knew that it was through education that they were going
- 13:51to get that. So, you know, they were, I
- 13:55remember looking at photos from when they were in Malaysia and,
- 13:57I mean, they were, you know, they were all the socialite
- 13:59parties, he dropped sports cars. My mom didn't work, she was a
- 14:03housewife, but, when we came to America, she worked at Dunkin
- 14:06Donuts that she worked at Hallmark cards.
- 14:09And, you know, he was struggling to run a business because the
- 14:11currency here is a Different. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:16It was a huge loss. You know, I'm terms of.
- 14:19So yeah, we, you know, we got a different type of come up and I
- 14:24guess for me, it was just a combination of being around my
- 14:27dad and just how I went to college, I went to a smaller
- 14:30College, which gave me more opportunities to kind of jump in
- 14:34charge of departments and stuff like that when I was younger.
- 14:37And yeah, and I played in a band and I was the kind of the pseudo
- 14:41manager of That band. So I had to figure that stuff
- 14:44out and that's like business that's networking.
- 14:46So all of that led, you know all that networking especially
- 14:50playing in a local band and in the Wichita scene just knowing
- 14:54everybody and being a popular band at the time.
- 14:57It kind of just built that business Network.
- 15:00Yeah. Congrats, look at you.
- 15:04Probably it's a little like it. I would say you're in a pretty
- 15:06popular band now. Oh yeah.
- 15:09Oh yeah. Have you seen monterey jack?
- 15:10Have, you know, you had, yeah. Are we play?
- 15:13So I can't I mean we're talking dates.
- 15:15I mean for everyone in the room, the Saturday, we played a break.
- 15:19Yeah, we're we time travel. Yes.
- 15:21Yes. But whenever you hear this we're
- 15:24probably playing on a Saturday somewhere.
- 15:29I'm not gonna say the specific day carry the one.
- 15:40Take it away and I Well, dusty over here is in entertainment to
- 15:48so that's probably why. Yeah, and I know I was noticing
- 15:51is soundboard stuff and all the yeah, yeah, he's into it.
- 15:55He's our, he's our A1 literally without him.
- 15:59We were know what to do. One day, he was like, you guys
- 16:02could try without me. I just give you guys my
- 16:03soundboard. Not like, I'm not touching that.
- 16:07I know how to plug in the mics. That's all I know.
- 16:12To know Dusty that's why you're here.
- 16:15Now I do still play in a band so it's fun Monterey Jack it's
- 16:19cover ban and we play 80s 90s and current music just rocked
- 16:24up, you know. Yeah I've been in that band
- 16:26from, you know my gosh you guys are making me feel real old.
- 16:30Okay, I've been in that band for about twelve, twelve years and
- 16:35wow, any Hue. Yeah any original like me like
- 16:39band/musician that is plays an original music.
- 16:42And you know the one thing that you kind of turn your nose up a
- 16:47lot of people. A lot of musicians do is playing
- 16:48in a cover band, you know. Yeah.
- 16:50And so these guys are comprised of old local musicians that
- 16:54played in local, you know, original bands, back in the 90s
- 16:5780s and 90s. But, you know, they got to a
- 17:01point in their life where they have careers, but they still
- 17:02love to play, this is somewhat entertain and the least,
- 17:05dramatic way to do it is play covers because you're not
- 17:08fighting about, like, direction of the band.
- 17:10Creativity is like this. Where the song goes, there's a
- 17:13road map. Someone else is saying it, and
- 17:14people liked it just executes and, you know, it's just fun.
- 17:19It's fun to go out and we just happen to be the right combo,
- 17:23the kind of transcends. Like I will say a played a I
- 17:25played in front of you know, several thousand people before
- 17:29you know, I mean, when I was in an original band and playing the
- 17:33Brickyard makes it feel like you're playing a real like
- 17:36concert, you know, because people are into it, it doesn't
- 17:38matter, you're playing covers so.
- 17:39But when they first approached me, I kind of Suck my nose up at
- 17:43it, you know when they turn they ended up kind of reading that on
- 17:48me during the, you know, during the tryouts.
- 17:52Yeah. And so they passed me over for
- 17:54this other guy and I was super bummed.
- 17:56I was like, oh my, but I was just wrapping my head around
- 17:58being in this cover band. Yeah.
- 18:00And that guy didn't work out and so then they came back to me and
- 18:04the rest is history. I guess.
- 18:06Yeah, that's just good that, you know, people have their own
- 18:08lives and like kids and like, you know, the jobs and
- 18:11everything. And it's nice that you still do
- 18:13this like not a lot of people like like if you play a sport
- 18:17you know you play a sport for like how many years and then
- 18:20you're like I'm so busy. I don't have time to deal with
- 18:22but you make time to do what you love to do.
- 18:24Yeah I think so there was only, you know, somewhere, I'm
- 18:29divorced now and I'm engaged again.
- 18:31But somewhere along when I was we were getting ready to start a
- 18:34family because I've got two kids, you know, I kind of put it
- 18:37in my mind that I just need to let go of music.
- 18:39And so there was a block there. Couple of years that I didn't
- 18:43play at all and I realized I really missed it and we would
- 18:47get together for the original bands where unions the band was
- 18:49called, oh, Phil. And we used to get like, even
- 18:51after we stopped playing on the regular, we would get together
- 18:53once a year to play, but that wasn't really enough.
- 18:57So being in the cover band made me realize, I'm just always
- 19:00going to have to have that as a part of my life, you know.
- 19:03Yeah. There's a certain, you know,
- 19:06certain aspect of entertainment that I just can't let go of.
- 19:09I just, I really love being on stage and entertaining people.
- 19:12No, yeah yeah. And that's the past, you know, I
- 19:14can't, I can't be, I can't practice like three times a week
- 19:18anymore and write songs and try to record an album.
- 19:21I just I just don't have time for that.
- 19:23So being a cover band, you know, we get paid.
- 19:27Yeah. And we have a great time and we
- 19:28entertain people. So yeah.
- 19:30And a lot of that then stems to like when you decide to move out
- 19:34of your 9 to 5 job. Mmm, moving into a 24/7 one.
- 19:40Your phone is always ringing. Well, I had a kind of had an
- 19:44interesting trajectory on that because yeah, you know, in the
- 19:47software world, we got bought out and, you know, several times
- 19:51and laid off. And, you know, that's when I
- 19:53first started, go out on my own and, you know, she really had to
- 19:58build my own book of business, with graphic design, web design,
- 20:02digital content, creation, video, stuff like that.
- 20:05It changed throughout the years I used to design Splurge
- 20:08magazine and she you know, photos for it.
- 20:12Did this magazine called High School, Sports magazine, which
- 20:14became vipe and I used to design that and she photos for that,
- 20:18you know? And then I started shooting
- 20:20video for VMware out in California and so it just took
- 20:25me on and at some point you know, then I bought Kirby's and
- 20:28then I was like, this is a lie, you know?
- 20:31I mean, I'm just like I'm working all the time and so I
- 20:34took a job back with the software folks, you know, so I
- 20:38went from like being My Own Boss to going back to a nine-to-five.
- 20:42And boy, let me tell you that second time, around that
- 20:44convinced me. I was like, yeah.
- 20:46You're like no, no, I can't do it.
- 20:49What ya see? Oh, yeah.
- 20:53I cannot drink here, right? I work best when I'm under the
- 20:59influence. It was.
- 21:00Yeah. It was a lot of like just you
- 21:02know they didn't really want to hear my when you run your own
- 21:08business, you control your own destiny.
- 21:09Oh yeah. So you know Is there's that
- 21:13there's that level of it, but other than that, it just it was
- 21:16just, you know, I was like, workplace culture is different
- 21:19everywhere. I'm sure some cultures.
- 21:20It's okay to be challenged in to challenge your boss.
- 21:24Who do that sort of thing, some cultures?
- 21:26It's like, no, you can't do that.
- 21:28What do you mean you're going to say?
- 21:29No to this? I would say this was a fairly
- 21:31Progressive culture. I don't want to, I don't want
- 21:33to, I would say that this software company they were,
- 21:35there was small, it wasn't very corporate corporate.
- 21:38But I mean, in terms of the, you know, the motive, Thinking in
- 21:43taking risks, I guess that's where my specialty is.
- 21:48If you want to ask me. I'm a risky person like, yeah,
- 21:52that's I thrive on taking risks. Yeah.
- 21:54And you know, kind of shoving all in if you will.
- 21:57So a lot of companies just not are not like that.
- 22:00So I, you know, I was thinking like four steps ahead of like,
- 22:03you know, growth where they're really just not prepared to
- 22:06listen to, someone complain about that.
- 22:08So I got laid off, you know? And I always think that's funny
- 22:11because Like they laid me off the second time around and I was
- 22:15like all right well I guess you know I was just buying Lucky's
- 22:18at the time. I was just find the Lucky's
- 22:19building at the time actually and I just closed on Lucky's the
- 22:23building, I had the business in September of that year that I
- 22:25got laid off and they high hosted, the company Christmas
- 22:29party at Lucky's, then they laid me off a week later, but is
- 22:34likely a day after I'd close on the door.
- 22:37Oh, yeah. But I just thought it was like,
- 22:39that's funny. You know, that's what you said.
- 22:42It was a day of what I closed on the building.
- 22:44So, you know, the bank of course, at pull credit and they
- 22:46thought it was fully important. So let's sign the mortgage and
- 22:49then they leave me also. Thank God for that.
- 22:51Uh-huh. Yeah, you got lucky but then I
- 22:53was, I was in again, you know, I'd kind of given up my book of
- 22:56business and I had to figure out how I was going to make it work.
- 22:59So yeah, just kind of push forward and and as a result you
- 23:03know, then came barleycorn's shortly after that.
- 23:06And I own barleycorn's for five years with a couple couple guys
- 23:12As and we renovated, it and brought some great acts there
- 23:15and then we got, you know, the Cotillion and then I sold
- 23:19barleycorn's and we started love and tonic and then covid did
- 23:26open around that time. We opened in October of 2019 and
- 23:31were shut down by March of 2020. Yeah, that's rough one.
- 23:34It was. Yeah, well I'm really glad that
- 23:37you guys still have lava and tonic to though, because now
- 23:39it's like people get to go back. And experiencing that you guys
- 23:43didn't decide to I mean that covid didn't shut you guys down.
- 23:46Yeah, actually no, yeah, it did for a chunk and then when they
- 23:50let us do to go actually it worked out really well with love
- 23:54and tonic because you know, there were just we did a good to
- 23:58go presentation. Like we had cute little bottles
- 24:00and we packed Ziplocs full of like accoutrement that you can
- 24:03put on your drink and a lot of cut fruit drinks are hella
- 24:06strong. Yeah, they are it carries drink.
- 24:08Oh yeah. Oh yeah, don't mess around but
- 24:11like people were Sir, Harry's drinks.
- 24:13It was like free advertising because people were like,
- 24:15everyone was trapped at home and they were, you know, like
- 24:18shooting in their backyard with like, by the pool with a lob and
- 24:21tonic drink, and they were like tagging us, so that really
- 24:25helped us survive. And then we open back up, people
- 24:28appreciated the environment, it's an, it's an Escapist
- 24:31environment. So, yeah, for sure.
- 24:35And so then lava and tonic and then is that, where you're at
- 24:39now to Sally and Jude? Yeah, going to tell us a little
- 24:41bit. About that about solving and
- 24:43Judes. Let me take a little drink here,
- 24:45okay? Hmm, yeah.
- 24:48So, you know, oddly enough, I throughout the years I've been
- 24:55experienced experimenting with like little pop-up events south
- 24:58of the arena with a business partner or a guy, I know named
- 25:02Bruce Rowley, who's actually involved in this space that
- 25:07we're in and he has RSM Hitting and I just hit him up.
- 25:13I was like man these Arena events.
- 25:14Why don't we do a little pop-up bar outside RSM, which was it's
- 25:18just right around the corner right across from the arena.
- 25:21And so we did all the proper paperwork and I we would set up
- 25:24a bar outside with patio furniture from one of his
- 25:28clients I think Wichita Furniture.
- 25:31You know, it was kind of a cross branded deal and people would
- 25:34walk up to the concert and drink a couple beers and you know I
- 25:38saw that it was like this could work from the south because from
- 25:41the north It's different, you know, from the north of the
- 25:43Arena. People don't really walk up from
- 25:45parking. They've already kind of walked
- 25:47through old town and had a drink and maybe had dinner, they're
- 25:49going directly to the concert. Yeah, from the south, there's a
- 25:53lot more people walking up from parking.
- 25:55So I I did a couple of those and then when the NCAA had their
- 26:01tournament, we rented out the parking lot.
- 26:03That is actually the Sully and Judah parking lot, right next to
- 26:06the song juice right now. And we did a big thing called
- 26:09bracket bash. And it was just a D like a DJ
- 26:13party with a with beer and games and stuff like that, and it
- 26:16crushed. So I kind of knew that, you
- 26:19know, I wanted to do something in this area and it was kind of
- 26:22actually one of love and tonics, first locations was on Commerce.
- 26:25Like, when we well, we weren't open there, but we actually had
- 26:28architectural drawings and we were ready to go in that space,
- 26:31But then we found the other space.
- 26:33So I almost thought about putting something south of the
- 26:35arena. And so Bruce had some space
- 26:39available and and kind of approached Myself and I I said,
- 26:44well, I can't do it alone. At this point.
- 26:45I've got a lot on my plate, so I hit up the guy.
- 26:49I sold. Barleycorn's do okay.
- 26:51Justin Brown? Who owns Shamrock?
- 26:54Jerry's Snug Harbor and barleycorn's, I think that's it.
- 27:00And yeah, and I was like, hey, let's go quarterback this.
- 27:03You know, and so that's what we're both in that along with
- 27:06Bruce and a partners and partners from Love and tonic.
- 27:09And the idea was Like I'd been to a couple East Coast, sandwich
- 27:14shops, and I kind of wanted to do kind of a deli style, maybe
- 27:17not true, Delhi, but just serving some sandwiches and some
- 27:22cocktails and keep more like lunch and dinner hours than
- 27:26late-night bar hours. So, that's what it's going to
- 27:29be. It's named after my my son's
- 27:31nickname and the other Justin son's nickname.
- 27:35My, my son's name is Solomon, and his son's name is Judah, so
- 27:39we call them, you know, I call my son saw Lee and calls him.
- 27:41Jude so falling Jude's, that's okay.
- 27:44Yeah, that's the deal. So, and it is, it's by far been
- 27:49one of the harder things I've had to work on.
- 27:52Is just a building at a kitchen, is extra complex.
- 27:55So is this the first time that you're building out a kitchen?
- 27:58Yeah. Okay.
- 27:59But love and tonic also serves apps and stuff like.
- 28:01Yeah. But that doesn't really require
- 28:05like because we didn't have like flag grills and stuff like that.
- 28:08So it is it is more like Prep. We don't have to prep any of
- 28:13that food there. It's like you know we would it
- 28:15put it in a pizza maker and we have like all the apps are dry
- 28:19goods that we put together. Just like like finger food.
- 28:22Yeah. Like egg rolls.
- 28:23We do it in an air fryer. We don't do it in a real frog.
- 28:26Yeah, Greece from healthy. Yeah.
- 28:28Actually I love my foot there. Let's talk about air fryers.
- 28:31Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:31Talk about air fryer. I love an airfryer everyone
- 28:34suggests. I don't know.
- 28:36Actually I just Phillips something rather I don't know.
- 28:38Yeah just anyone will work Emily.
- 28:40Bought me an airfryer which I haven't Returned yet because
- 28:42it's too small. Oh yeah you gotta get the
- 28:45bigger. Sorry about the airfryer
- 28:46tangent. Yes no no that's good.
- 28:50I like the are fires as all-in-one.
- 28:51All-in-one you know like you do will make a coffee too.
- 29:02It's like an insta pot and stir the pot.
- 29:03It's about airport. See, this is the sponsorship you
- 29:08guys should be shooting for. This is people to think you're
- 29:10getting paid now. But Fruit Ninja, get the
- 29:13airfryer by Fruit Ninja. Yeah.
- 29:14I highly recommend that privilege.
- 29:16Are you are not sponsoring us, but if you want to sponsor us,
- 29:19please email us at. Here's to You pot at gmail.com,
- 29:22or follow us on Instagram at. Here's to You cast.
- 29:24Okay, let's get back to the show.
- 29:27So your, your restaurant is going to be a restaurant, right?
- 29:30I mean, yeah, it's yeah. So, I think I saw it too as well
- 29:33because it's like, on the corner.
- 29:35There's literally right in front of the interest.
- 29:37Oh yeah, right. And when I remember, I drove by
- 29:40because my company were about To move a week here on Commerce
- 29:43Street. Oh, yeah.
- 29:44And then I saw that thing I saw they were, like, remodeled, like
- 29:46doing something there and I was like, I was like, I wonder what
- 29:50they're doing and then my manager told me, my boss told
- 29:54me. He's like, yeah, there.
- 29:55I think they were bringing a kitchen there.
- 29:56I was like, that's a smart as fucking idea ever.
- 29:59Well, I think hopefully hope you're right.
- 30:05Yes, walk to the fucking yes. And there's a lot of people
- 30:09officing down there too. So I mean that's what you know,
- 30:11really. I come over there to Is Well I'm
- 30:13sure. Yeah come on over.
- 30:17It's a beautiful bar. We built and the bar is built
- 30:21that. Like we're going through all the
- 30:23code and everything City permitting and all that right
- 30:26now building out the kitchen. So it's all that's very compl,
- 30:28the fun stuff. That's really a lot of fun.
- 30:30So what can we expect soluble? That's the great question that I
- 30:34get asked that question almost daily and I would love, I would
- 30:37love to say a definitive date. However, I've learned that I
- 30:41shouldn't But I will say that I hope to be open sometime in May.
- 30:46I think that would be fairly aggressive though, so that's
- 30:50what we can expect it this year. Oh, you has to otherwise, I will
- 30:53disappear, I'll be in. Mexico.
- 30:56The all my bank accounts and I'll run away with you, we're
- 31:01not open this year. Yeah, well, open a restaurant
- 31:03down in Mexico. I'll be serving microwave
- 31:06notches if I have to. Yeah, I mean, hey, I think well
- 31:09in Mexico. I was selfish.
- 31:11I worked so far. Wait, what am I saying?
- 31:14Airfryer notches there. Yeah.
- 31:17What was I thinking? We're gonna be like, oh shit.
- 31:22These are healthy. Yeah, that's great.
- 31:27Depending on where you're at you're probably going to blow
- 31:29out some circuits. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 31:31Exactly. You just climb up one of those
- 31:33circuits and start pulling it together, stealing electricity
- 31:37from the next town over Absolutely.
- 31:44So we've kind of gone through your career Journey a little bit
- 31:46more and now just kind of gone through where you're at right
- 31:51now and you shared a little bit about your first purchase
- 31:55experience to again a great friend of yours that we that
- 31:59passed away. Can you tell us like a little
- 32:02bit about like your first purchase experience to your
- 32:06you're now your most current one like what were the nerves with
- 32:09that? Like what was that experience?
- 32:11Like as you transitioning to like, that was my first one and
- 32:14now I'm here. I'm more seasoned.
- 32:16Oh yeah. Or how do you, you know, like
- 32:19well, it's walk us through that it's different because, you
- 32:22know, Kirby's and Lucky's were existing businesses.
- 32:26Barleycorn's was too, but we were, you know, not really
- 32:30reliant on the barleycorn's current like clientele, we knew
- 32:36that That we if we're going to actually pay money for that
- 32:39thing that we needed to change something, you know, that we
- 32:42needed to attract more people and it needed to be not a dive
- 32:45bar downtown, but a music hall, you know what I mean?
- 32:48And not be so cliquey and do a lot more.
- 32:51And, and so, that was different than the last two weeks.
- 32:56Last three experiences. I've had, I mean, buying the
- 32:59Cotillion by far was like, the most intimidating one.
- 33:02No, that's huge. Yeah.
- 33:03And there was a lot going on in my life at that time, you know?
- 33:06Newly divorced and and all. When did you buy the Cotillion
- 33:09and 2018-2019? Yeah, it's so pretty.
- 33:12That's still new. Yeah, look at you.
- 33:14You're so killing it. Yeah, he's doing okay.
- 33:17Yeah, yeah. And so, you know, that was a,
- 33:19that was definitely an interesting experience.
- 33:22But I mean, you know, I'm learning things and I know.
- 33:26Yeah. So, you know, this experience of
- 33:28opening up selling and Jews is distinctly different.
- 33:30Everything that I've gone through, has been distinctly
- 33:32different. I deal with different.
- 33:33I don't have the same partners and every single Deal.
- 33:36So I have several different. The only business I own a
- 33:39hundred percent by myself is Lucky's everything else that I
- 33:42do has business partners. I mean you just can't do things
- 33:45a lot. I just you know you can't and if
- 33:47you think you can, you're wrong. I mean I just need you really
- 33:51yeah. Yeah.
- 33:52I mean, I need other people's input.
- 33:54You have to be able to work. So like, you know, when people
- 33:56are like thinking that lava and tonic was one person's Vision.
- 34:00It was, it was, it was a collaboration, but I needed the
- 34:03creative minds at my business partners to lead that and I Both
- 34:06contribute to it, you know. Yeah and same thing here with
- 34:10Sully and Jude's, you know, it's multiple people coming together
- 34:13and collaborating to create something.
- 34:14So and just knowing when to, you know, when your voice is being,
- 34:21when it needs to be heard or when something is subjective and
- 34:24you're wasting time by just saying, well I think yeah
- 34:27because not everyone that comes to my business is you know going
- 34:32to think like me and if I book music that I only like no one
- 34:35would come to the shows. Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 34:36So I mean that you have to think of it in a greater bigger scheme
- 34:41and and I hear a lot of that conversation, you know, why
- 34:43don't you bring more XYZ to the Cotillion?
- 34:47It's like, well, why don't you show up and bring two thousand
- 34:51of your friends? I have no problem booking,
- 34:55whatever band you say that needs to be playing Wichita, just show
- 34:58me 2,000. People will pay a ticket to be
- 35:00the. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:00Hey, I'm not mad about the band's you bring to the
- 35:03Cotillion, I'm very happy with them.
- 35:04But yeah, I know I, you know, there's some people that You
- 35:06know, there are you should do next, you should do a Kpop band.
- 35:10Oh, we are probably too small for a Kpop band, but I have to
- 35:14go to prom. We probably need to get away
- 35:17assembly. That's the clock.
- 35:18There was a Kpop band. Was it called?
- 35:21Did a concert in Lawrence? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:25I don't doubt. I'm just saying.
- 35:26I think we, you know, I would love to have a large fan base.
- 35:29That's a large. Fanbase.
- 35:31Lot of kids. Yeah, I like, oh yeah.
- 35:37But yes you know guys I know you guys want to see your bias but
- 35:42got a thousand friends you going to bring?
- 35:44Yeah, yeah yeah. It probably hit the fire code
- 35:50though, issue. That's that's I was so our last
- 35:52guest was around Kpop and they have the K-pop K-pop K-pop stop
- 35:58and Anime sort, okay. And she was sharing with us how
- 36:02like, you know, at first they went through a modest experience
- 36:05in Wasn't that they brought an actual van.
- 36:07It was just kind of bringing fans together and doing an event
- 36:11where you're basically celebrating the fact that you
- 36:14love this band, right? And so at first, they did
- 36:18something small a little bit modest, right?
- 36:20They were like 200 and they're like, they sold out so quick.
- 36:22We were supposed to do like more ads for them to oh wow before we
- 36:26could even get the first sat out.
- 36:28Yeah, it was so nice. Yeah, people love it.
- 36:30Yeah. So I don't doubt it but still
- 36:33like going back to kind of your Your various, you know, from
- 36:40your first purchase to know your latest one.
- 36:42I noticed you were mentioning a lot about like, your business
- 36:45partner, sure. And having a group of various
- 36:48different business partners in different businesses businesses
- 36:51to like, for the aspiring entrepreneur.
- 36:54Like what would you say on how to figure out how to get that?
- 36:59Oh, well, for an aspiring entrepreneur, I would say first
- 37:03things first. Is that it, you know, I always
- 37:06say like going to business with your friends is a difficult
- 37:08thing and it is and it will affect some friendships, you
- 37:11know, it can affect some friendships and your best bet is
- 37:15to make sure you line out everything in what's called an
- 37:18operating agreement. And that is just basically all
- 37:21the details on how the business is going to run, you know, who's
- 37:24going to get paid. What, what's going to happen if
- 37:26you want to leave, what's going to happen if you know what I
- 37:28mean and it's all lined out in legal documents.
- 37:30So none of that is like you know a sore point and that's
- 37:33something I have gotten better with you know because I've You
- 37:36know, I went into when I bought Kirby's, I bought it with a
- 37:39friend that was a the sax player in my first band.
- 37:42And, you know, we had some rough years when he was upset about
- 37:46like the his return on it, you know.
- 37:48So I've been totally bought him out and then our friendship
- 37:51healed but even in my web design business, I was working with a
- 37:54friend and yeah, you know, is this, when you're working with
- 37:56your friend, it's going to, you're going to have some hard
- 37:59time. So you just have to figure it
- 38:01out, but your best bet is to line everything out as much as
- 38:04you can in legal documents. Yeah.
- 38:07So and then, in terms of finding the right partner, you know, you
- 38:12just have to observe how they are and, you know, you're
- 38:17probably going to want to make sure you believe in their ethics
- 38:20that you have the same moral code.
- 38:22You know, those kind of things and that they have some business
- 38:24Acumen, you know, and you know that they know what they're
- 38:28getting into because I'll tell you everyone wants to own a bar
- 38:30but they you know I would tell them if you're really trying to
- 38:33make money, I would just put it into real estate, you know.
- 38:35I would just It'd make a more, you know, safe investment.
- 38:38But that's a lot of that's not really what?
- 38:41It's a lot of these folks want to do.
- 38:42They want to do something exciting?
- 38:43They want to create something they want to, you know?
- 38:46It's, there's a certain amount of, you know, Pride, you take in
- 38:50creating something like that that people attend and talk
- 38:52well, about, you know, like you can, there's it's hard to put a
- 38:56dollar value on that, you know, like saying someone, that's my
- 38:59favorite place to go. I loved, I loved that place and
- 39:02you get a five star review, instead of someone complaining.
- 39:04It's like, okay good. We did good.
- 39:06People are appreciating this Vision we had so but yeah, it's
- 39:11about that finding, you know, a good person and if you were if
- 39:15they're your friend, make sure to line out as many details as
- 39:18possible. Yeah.
- 39:20How did you go about with finding your business partners
- 39:24various various ways with Kirby's?
- 39:29The guy that I just like a couple years ago, sold 49
- 39:33percent to, he was One of the original guys that was up
- 39:38against me to buy it in the first place and I just gotten to
- 39:40know him over the years. And I knew he had a passion and
- 39:42a love for the place. We don't always see eye to eye
- 39:45on how to run the business but I'm that's another one of those
- 39:48situations just like I can't, you know, I have to trust or let
- 39:51him learn his own way on how he's going to run it, you know,
- 39:55so I can't be blocking it if I'm not actually putting time to it.
- 39:59So he's the one that's earned him and his wife had put a lot
- 40:02of time and energy into the space.
- 40:03I can't sit there and, and, you know, Swoop in and say, no, you
- 40:08know, it's I've got to let him go and he's made some great
- 40:12calls and he's made some, you know, he's done some great
- 40:14things with that space. And you know, I've also advised
- 40:17him on things and I think that's, that's a good
- 40:20partnership, you know, like knowing when like I said knowing
- 40:24when to have a battle and when not to and when to appreciate
- 40:27someone else's opinion is as valid as yours.
- 40:29Yes. Oh, so you know with you having
- 40:31a business and everything like you do all this process to have
- 40:34someone trust and everything like Like that.
- 40:37Like how do you have you ever experienced like a bad?
- 40:40Like a bad relationship or a bad business or anything like that?
- 40:44Sure. Yeah.
- 40:45I mean, I can't go into details but anyone, but well, it's hard
- 40:52to share specifics, but I think you kind of know it.
- 40:55You know, what are signs that you should break up?
- 41:01It's much like a, you know, it's much like a regular relationship
- 41:04if the person that doesn't respect you, And communicate
- 41:06with you is cheating on you with other businesses that's deep out
- 41:13of that cuts, you know what I mean?
- 41:14I mean if they're a conflicts like that then or you know, when
- 41:19you look at your output of time in working the business and it
- 41:25is way out of whack to where your equal business partner is,
- 41:29you know, then something needs to be done.
- 41:31That's not a, that's not a tenable situation for anybody
- 41:36and that goes for a relationship or business relationship or
- 41:38being in a band. I mean, it's all human
- 41:40interaction, right? You got to be respectful, you
- 41:43know, mutually have an understanding about how things
- 41:45should go. So when that starts to fall
- 41:47apart then you know, you should probably talk therapy.
- 41:49Yeah. Get a lawyer or maybe you should
- 41:57bring in a third business partner.
- 42:01Open it up. We need to open up this
- 42:03relationship. Everybody loved a threesome.
- 42:06Everyone loves the bring some more money to the table, and
- 42:09then it makes everything better. We another body to the bed.
- 42:12Make certain. No, that's not true.
- 42:16That's where that's where relationships and businesses may
- 42:18be different. I'm not a licensed therapist.
- 42:23Yeah, we're yeah, we just met, we're just traumatized.
- 42:30So we are getting ready to walk. It be getting ready to take you
- 42:34on a break, so that we can prepare.
- 42:36Prepare your drink because you guys know huge part of the
- 42:39podcast. Is that we like to bring some
- 42:42alcohol into the mix. So before we get into that,
- 42:46though, what song is playing? Is that what I'm hearing?
- 42:58I believe you are correct. It's the same beat, but it's a
- 43:00different lyrics. Okay, damn, it's like my I told
- 43:03you guys my headphones are sucking.
- 43:06You know what? Yeah, let's go ahead and go to
- 43:07break. We'll move some stuff around to
- 43:09follow up on next question. Very good.
- 43:54We are back from our little break.
- 43:58Got some drinks made this. Here's to you the podcast
- 44:02segment number two with our special guest and at some very
- 44:10good drinks here. Yes guys.
- 44:13I made you know, as always know, I always look at drink or I
- 44:15guess to make him feel special and I just want them get a
- 44:18little drunk, you know, just a little just a little Maybe, I
- 44:22mean if you want a shot of whiskey we can.
- 44:24Okay, let's do it. Let's do you have any portable.
- 44:32You can tell us more about this ring so just pour some in here.
- 44:37Just whatever. Yeah so this not shy so this
- 44:42drink how you name? It bear a Cuda bear a good
- 44:48exactly. So basically it It's just
- 44:52whiskey. So the ingredients is basically
- 44:56seven to ten mint leaves point. 75 ounces of Honey, .75 of lemon
- 45:02juice and 1.5 ounces of whiskey. And then you add some ice, shake
- 45:08it. And then after that, strain it
- 45:10over some chilled eyes glass and garnish with mint.
- 45:15And Alex loves it. I love it because he wants to
- 45:21take a shot with you, Alex, sure?
- 45:26Yeah. All right, whiskey with you as
- 45:30well. You got an old-fashioned whiskey
- 45:32over there. I'll do a regular shot in that
- 45:38and then I'll sip on this because it still has some of the
- 45:40modeling and goodness in it. Yes.
- 45:45All right. Is where I have the cups.
- 45:55Yeah, I don't know where to go so I could I don't, I lied.
- 45:59I don't have any in there. I lied.
- 46:02But it's all right, because we're gonna get back to it and
- 46:05we're going to take a shot in between.
- 46:06Yes, exactly. Okay.
- 46:08I'll put this on reserve right here.
- 46:10Be ready when you guys are, I think I'm okay.
- 46:13We'll do that too. I'll just take a huge step.
- 46:16There you go. There you go.
- 46:17Cheers. Cheers.
- 46:18Here's to you. That's whiskey confirmed
- 46:25confirmed. That's what?
- 46:28Oh, my God. Speaking of last night, Emily
- 46:30and I were testing the drinks, right?
- 46:33And we were making trial drink. Oh yeah.
- 46:36And at first, we're like, I told her, I was like, hey, don't you
- 46:38got Jack Daniels above your fridge?
- 46:40She's like, yeah. And I was like, well, it's
- 46:42whiskey, so we might as well do that.
- 46:44And yeah, it don't know. You guys didn't go anywhere
- 46:48after that, we just decided. It didn't taste.
- 46:51That's great. So I have four roses Home.
- 46:53Oh yeah. And so my dumb ass is like here.
- 46:58Let me try the difference between jacket for Roses but
- 47:01straight. Oh, yeah.
- 47:03She took it like a champ and I watched her.
- 47:04Oh yeah. And she was like, I was not
- 47:07really expecting to do this but I did.
- 47:10I don't know what I was thinking when I saw her pour in a cup and
- 47:14I'm like, is she? Oh oh oh, she is.
- 47:16Yeah, oh, okay, and I saw her sipping.
- 47:18Oh she really took it, okay? Yeah, let's just switch to for
- 47:25Rose. I knew what the fuck I was
- 47:27talking about. That's what you need to look.
- 47:29Look at for a business partner, someone that's willing to take
- 47:31straight whiskey shots and she took a shot of gin.
- 47:37Oh my god. Oh yeah.
- 47:39Oh my God, I didn't know, I didn't know that that I think to
- 47:43do. So he did it and I knew.
- 47:45But I watched, you know, that, you know that things like you,
- 47:48tell your friends. Yeah.
- 47:49Go ahead and do it, but you're just like sit there and watch
- 47:51him with it. Moving so fast.
- 47:53Like I did, it's low order. Yes.
- 47:57Dusty or is before he could go no, and whatever Sarah: that's
- 48:03rough. That is not good.
- 48:05I saw her poor and she's like, I'm gonna take a shot of this
- 48:07might go ahead baby. No one stopped me.
- 48:10So sad, that guess also, Jocelyn serial entrepreneur as well.
- 48:13And she was like, okay, I'm on a gin kick so we were like,
- 48:19alright we're going to figure out a gin drink for you and
- 48:22again, we do Shots with our guests throughout the episodes.
- 48:25So I was just like, okay, we're going to do Jen and I'm like,
- 48:28you know what, I've never taken a gin shot before.
- 48:31Is that a thing? Like if people do that, no one
- 48:33says anything. On my foot, Ima take it.
- 48:36And I was sitting, I was behind Mike and I looked at her and say
- 48:39yeah baby girl, thank you dude. Yeah, it's rough, it's rough.
- 48:46But speaking of like weird and senses where you don't really
- 48:50think things through, that's how you make.
- 48:53Their life. That's that's a transition.
- 48:54I don't do. What did you find out about me?
- 48:56Yeah, oh yeah. Well, here's a transition.
- 49:00You know, we didn't know nothing about you, you know?
- 49:02But we came across this article on the Wichita Eagle.
- 49:07They did say that the most important person to please you
- 49:10say is the one. You see, yo, I'm sorry I'm say
- 49:13this again. So you said I did yes.
- 49:17You said that are quoting you. Yeah, we're quote, quote ocean,
- 49:20quote quote, the most, while we got to bring up.
- 49:23Old shit and you tweeted on January.
- 49:37First 2028 shit about to say this shit, okay?
- 49:46I was like, no way. All live in the clouds now.
- 49:55But anyways, you quoted that the most important person to please
- 49:59use is the one you see every morning in the mirror.
- 50:02Oh yeah, yeah. I remember saying that shit was
- 50:08going through a real existential crisis.
- 50:17But I believe it. That's right.
- 50:19When she We Ready, are going? She's like, dude, listen to
- 50:22this. It was time to spend with me, me
- 50:36complaining about my life, that I came up with that quote for
- 50:38Wichita Eagle. Yes, thank you.
- 50:48No, Pharmaceuticals were hurt in the making of This pun.
- 50:55Yes, I did say that I do believe it.
- 50:59Yeah, you do, believe I do believe it.
- 51:00I do. I think, yeah.
- 51:03What was the meaning of that quote?
- 51:04Can you? Well, I mean, at the time, I if,
- 51:07if I'm thinking of the right article, I think that was in
- 51:102017 or 16. Maybe I was getting divorced.
- 51:17Oh, yeah, 20:28. Am I going to get divorce in
- 51:192012? Shit.
- 51:20Oh no, you're not. It's a tongue, is the tongue.
- 51:24Oh yes, Uncle save me. Yes.
- 51:27No, I was going through a divorce and, you know, I was
- 51:29really kind of, I mean, you know, I changed my direction in
- 51:33life several times and I don't, I think you can always reinvent
- 51:35yourself. So going through a big change
- 51:37like that, you know, I was kind of just finding myself and, and
- 51:41figuring out what I wanted. And it may be going through a
- 51:44little bit of a midlife crisis, you know.
- 51:45I go through on every four or five years so I do every year,
- 51:50right? Every year when I turn the next,
- 51:52yeah. Yeah, but I think that if you
- 51:54can't look at because there's been plenty of times in my life
- 51:56when I've looked at myself in the mirror and been like, who
- 51:59the fuck are you? What are you doing?
- 52:01Why are you doing that things? Like this, are you staring back
- 52:07at me, you know, I never thought I would be doing the things I'm
- 52:10doing, you know, that kind of thing.
- 52:12So it's like you know as long as I think that that's a good
- 52:15situation. You can't live life to please
- 52:17others because you will others. Will always fail.
- 52:19You like you will never have I'm not, I'm not trying to say, you
- 52:24can't depend on friends, you can't just depend on the person.
- 52:27You love your wife, your, your girlfriend, your boyfriend,
- 52:29whatever. I'm just saying, really, though,
- 52:31the best thing for them is that you are pleased with yourself.
- 52:35You know, that nothing else can go, right, unless you feel good
- 52:38about yourself and you have that self-confidence and you're not
- 52:42depending on someone else for that.
- 52:44Self-confidence, you have to look yourself in the mirror and
- 52:47believe in yourself and and and be proud of the person that you
- 52:50are. It doesn't matter, whatever you
- 52:51anyone else says. And that's why.
- 52:52I always whatever compliment someone tells me about what I'm
- 52:55doing. I let it roll off because it's
- 52:58like I'm not doing this for anyone else but like me, my kids
- 53:02you know my passion. Do I care about other people?
- 53:05You, of course. Yeah.
- 53:06You know, but I don't. And is it good to hear?
- 53:09Compliments? Yes.
- 53:09But you don't want to let that drive you and be the measure of
- 53:13your success. Yeah.
- 53:14That's the external validation is not what you're seeking?
- 53:17No. Yeah.
- 53:18In fact, I've shied away, you know, I mean, if you know does
- 53:22he said he Me on stage and I'm just a completely different
- 53:27person in real life than the person that's on stage.
- 53:30I just I'm not that's a Act and the older, I've gotten the more.
- 53:35I like that. I can go into Lucky's and no one
- 53:38knows I'm the owner. I mean I'm not going to walk
- 53:40around saying I'm the owner. Yeah I don't want to flaunt your
- 53:42shit. No, in fact it attracts like
- 53:45really annoying conversation so like I'd rather be in a corner
- 53:49and just observe and be able to go about my business.
- 53:52Sometimes I To just go out with my fiance and just hang out and
- 53:55talk to her. Yeah, you know, so I'm an
- 53:57observer as well. I I'm like in the back but like
- 54:01in La Ventana que. No, I mean, I some bars.
- 54:05I that I own. I don't go into very much at all
- 54:09and it's just, you know, some people are like why don't you go
- 54:12there? It's like me and I yeah I got a
- 54:1415 year old 11 year old mining on be there at 10:30.
- 54:18My pants my fiancée is got four kids where the Brady Bunch.
- 54:22So real shit, you know, I'm not looking to hang, no, no, I don't
- 54:28have them, I don't have the minivan.
- 54:30No minivan egos mini, man. Come on, we have some cool
- 54:35minivans now. No, they don't.
- 54:37Yes, they do. There was no other minivan that
- 54:43matters other than the Astro van.
- 54:45And other than that, he'll know, I'm sorry.
- 54:49I don't don't be dropping some fucking Toyota.
- 54:52Sienna automatic Lambo doors on the minivan.
- 54:55There's nothing. That's funny because that's
- 54:57okay. What was about to say?
- 54:58What many men are you guys saying is a cool mini.
- 55:00Well, I mean like, they're just like upcycled now as in like,
- 55:04you know you just cross over. Yeah.
- 55:05Like you can resize. You can recline all the way
- 55:07back. You know they has a touchscreen.
- 55:09You know I'm just saying it's not a minivan but it's a cool
- 55:13hmm. In that year I rented a minivan
- 55:18in Seattle and that bitch is quiet.
- 55:24How do you even know that bitch was running still?
- 55:25And there were in the parking lot and I said that we turn the
- 55:28song. She's like, yeah, we did your
- 55:30future husband sometimes trade in that Corvette.
- 55:35We're getting a fucking minivan. Can you tell much room for
- 55:41activities? We're gonna, we're gonna tell my
- 55:44husband. I think we should sell our house
- 55:46and get a minivan. Yeah, you should do that.
- 55:49That's the van live now. And then Exciting.
- 55:51YouTube videos that just driving to the grocery store and getting
- 55:54a shit ton of groceries in your minivan.
- 55:59Sometime, I'll put switches as well a body kit and everything.
- 56:04Honestly, a dead body in that. That's exactly it.
- 56:06Yeah, yeah. No, those are empty because you
- 56:09those were going to be the shock cups.
- 56:10Emily. Oh, give him to me.
- 56:12I was like, I was like did I finish my drink?
- 56:15Like one one thing that you just said a couple minutes ago about
- 56:20like, you know, Be in the bar and having people know that
- 56:24like, that's your bar. You just want to be in the
- 56:25corner. Mmm.
- 56:27It did remind me of this one night that we were at Lucky's.
- 56:30And I was making a lot of jerky at the time and I approached you
- 56:33and sold you a bag of jerky. Not knowing that you own The
- 56:36Joint. I had I known that.
- 56:38I would not have I did I remember it was, it was spicy
- 56:43and we talked about. Didn't you doing kimchi as well,
- 56:45or something like that. I did we talk about something
- 56:47like that. I've been thinking about it
- 56:48maybe. Yeah.
- 56:50Yeah, I remember. Something.
- 56:51Oh yes. Were you smoking it?
- 56:53Hmm. Yeah I'm a smoker.
- 56:54Yes. I'm not saying he had a bowl
- 56:56when he was smoking like some checking.
- 57:02Dusty smokes cheese, I don't know how but he does that shit.
- 57:06Yeah, yeah yeah yeah I remember you now.
- 57:09Yes yes yes. I did buy some jerky from you.
- 57:12What did I buy your text about your Chex Mix.
- 57:16I don't remember about something from you.
- 57:18I feel like it was checking you liked.
- 57:20It was Chex Mix because I feel like I remember tasting that.
- 57:23Smoky goodness. Yeah.
- 57:24Out of the many products that I have.
- 57:26I sold you something. Yeah, he's so mean, Hashish on
- 57:32South Broadway, but come to find out later.
- 57:39I was like, oh my God. That's the.
- 57:40Do that once a joint, perfect. See, that's great.
- 57:43You didn't know who I was at this pit that often happens with
- 57:46like someone was, like, illicit drugs.
- 57:48You know, I'm a hand on it. Take that outside.
- 57:50What are you talking about? Like, when I occasionally have
- 57:53to do you want a bump? Yes.
- 57:55These are you have to drop the like I own the place.
- 57:57You have to leave. I've had a couple of those
- 58:01instances but yeah, speaking of having a tell people things like
- 58:07that I think like what Emily was trying to ask you as like we
- 58:12wanted to know like you know when you're not sticking that
- 58:14external validation because you know what you are looking for
- 58:17for yourself, right? You're trying to please yourself
- 58:20these days, any day, every day we wanted to know like what's
- 58:24the craziest thing you've ever done to try and close a deal?
- 58:27If you've had done something like that or a Big purchase.
- 58:30The craziest thing I've ever done to close a deal.
- 58:33Don't tell me. You did sucking dick.
- 58:48Cheeseburger cheeseburger. Yeah.
- 58:57Do you want the shot? Do you want more?
- 58:59Do you want me to eat? You can pour some in here.
- 59:00No, another drink. I could make it real quick.
- 59:02No, it's okay. I want the shot.
- 59:03Are you want it? Like, you do this like this and
- 59:05then I'll give you this for the shot, okay?
- 59:06The craziest thing I've ever done for a business deal.
- 59:14Gosh. You know, well, not too many
- 59:17crazy things for. There's not much excitement
- 59:19revolving around a business deal per se.
- 59:22I will share a story with like, okay, I won't Name the artist.
- 59:33Okay. But it was a rap act name.
- 59:35It might have been a little edgy.
- 59:37Okay. Okay, maybe had spent some time
- 59:39in prison, okay? But that doesn't narrow down.
- 59:42I know good. So the deal is, you know, some
- 59:47of these hip-hop acts, I mean the weird thing about booking
- 59:51hip-hop is, there's a lot of fly-by-night promoters that do
- 59:53hip-hop. So two things happen in this
- 59:56Wichita Market, you know, so many people have said, I'm
- 59:58bringing, I'm bringing, you know, someone to Wichita and
- 1:00:04then the show never happened. So people lose faith in the in
- 1:00:06the hip-hop, right? The other thing that happens is
- 1:00:09a lot of hip-hop artists, get hot checks written to them like
- 1:00:11oh it's time to settle the show. Here's a check.
- 1:00:13So As a result, they're asking for cash and large sums of cash.
- 1:00:19So just picture this, I mean you know you is like you have to sit
- 1:00:23there and hand over a bunch of cash.
- 1:00:25Well this manager at the time was a little bit, I don't know
- 1:00:27what to say. You know, I'd say he was
- 1:00:29aggressive and we were like hey we don't have the whole thing in
- 1:00:35cash. Will cut you a check.
- 1:00:36He's like I can't I can't go back to that tour bus until that
- 1:00:39crazy motherfucker that I'm going to hand him Jeff and And
- 1:00:45it was getting real tense and he had like, he had shoved, a
- 1:00:48female security guard because she stopped him and he didn't
- 1:00:51have his VIP, you know, his backstage pass.
- 1:00:53And I was like, you know, I had to like sit there and it was
- 1:00:56like really tense, you know, and everyone was just kind of
- 1:00:58staring each other down. I was like, all right, we'll
- 1:01:01pull the cash, but you have to apologize to my female security
- 1:01:04guard for you. Yeah, fuck.
- 1:01:06Yeah. And so, he's like, all right.
- 1:01:08And he did it and he went out and apologize to her and she
- 1:01:11came up afterwards and she was like, Hey, I really appreciate
- 1:01:13you doing that the whole time. I'm sweating though.
- 1:01:15Yeah, you know just because like it's is, you know, this guy he
- 1:01:20was right. His artist was crazy and like
- 1:01:22yeah he needed all the cash and was one of the Early times when
- 1:01:25we had just taken over. So that was the one of those
- 1:01:28crazy situations in settling a deal, which would be a deal with
- 1:01:33the artist rappers. You can't.
- 1:01:35Fuck with that. Do you money is money from them?
- 1:01:38And we had this show, I believe this picture game talking shit
- 1:01:42basically. Well, we had this game where we
- 1:01:44had it was like the Ying Yang Twins and I can't remember a
- 1:01:50Petey Pablo and someone else and only like one of the Yin and
- 1:01:54Yang Twins showed up Yin or Yang, I don't know.
- 1:02:02Kagome. Yeah, we made a mistake, we made
- 1:02:05the mistake of paying one of the dudes money before and then we
- 1:02:08figure out the other one wasn't coming.
- 1:02:09We're like, hey, well, if he's not coming, then we need some of
- 1:02:12the back. He's like how much we need to
- 1:02:23have the money back. We can't even call yourself
- 1:02:30twins. It was a giant brawl starts out.
- 1:02:45Yeah, that's true. That's true.
- 1:02:48True. But yeah, I don't, yeah, that's
- 1:02:51about the craziest I think. Other than that, I mean,
- 1:02:54everything's pretty boring, pretty boring contracts, and
- 1:02:59wrangling money and all that shit.
- 1:03:01So yeah, just just Boring up having fun in general.
- 1:03:04It's just like so boring money is so 2010.
- 1:03:08It's not funny. Yeah, like yeah, you do.
- 1:03:11You have to use Apple pay? Yes, he's got a venmo me.
- 1:03:14Oh yeah, that would be cool if someday I can buy a business
- 1:03:16with Apple pay daily spend to come back.
- 1:03:27Oh my God. But I mean so like one thing
- 1:03:30that we also want in a chat through is like write your
- 1:03:32diverse and diversifying that business portfolio of yours.
- 1:03:35Oh sure. Yeah yeah yeah.
- 1:03:38Go for it. Go for it bro.
- 1:03:39Well have you ever had a funny or weird exchange with a
- 1:03:43customer? You have a shared too many
- 1:03:48details, but we do want a lot of details.
- 1:03:52We want to know the name, social security number, what's the
- 1:03:55address last forever? Are they on the white books as
- 1:03:59we know? Yeah the more the weird the
- 1:04:02weird. Oh yeah, I mean, I have a ton of
- 1:04:04weird of changes with customers I run bars.
- 1:04:07So what's the top? Top one?
- 1:04:11That's a tough one. You know, I'll tell her like a
- 1:04:18not so funny one, you know, there was this one time, this
- 1:04:20guy now came and she was drunk, just obliterated.
- 1:04:25And like, I was trying to You know early I'm sorry you dealt
- 1:04:29with Emily. Yeah dude.
- 1:04:32I can't tell you early on. In my career, I was trying to be
- 1:04:36like a responsible person that was serving alcohol to the mass.
- 1:04:42At least at least you're trying was trying what?
- 1:04:48Nothing. Now I know how I know.
- 1:04:50We're all grown-ups. We all make our own decisions
- 1:04:52but like back then. So I remember one time at
- 1:04:54Kirby's went because when I bought Kirby's, I had to.
- 1:04:57I learn everything about the bar business.
- 1:04:58So I had the lead bartender, teach me everything, and I
- 1:05:00mopped, and I cleaned the toilets and I opened the bar and
- 1:05:04I worked shifts and I did all that with customers.
- 1:05:08And this one guy walks in, he's a younger, you know, black guy
- 1:05:12and he had a food trailer or a food truck, and he was there.
- 1:05:16It was a really icy night, he drank and he just got
- 1:05:19obliterated, you know. And before I knew it and then I
- 1:05:23was like looking at, he's like, I'm going to drive home was like
- 1:05:25that I can't let you drive home and it's icy out, you're gonna.
- 1:05:28Yeah that's that's that's crazy and it, you know, he was like, I
- 1:05:34got it, I can't, I gotta drive home.
- 1:05:36I was that. And my other bartender was
- 1:05:39working there. As a, hey, watch the bar.
- 1:05:40I'm gonna drive this dude home, so I drove him home but take him
- 1:05:44to the sketchy part of town. I was like, what am I doing?
- 1:05:47My took me back to one time. My dad went in this Clinic.
- 1:05:52I was working. I was a teenager at the time.
- 1:05:54And this guy walks in, he's like, I need some gas.
- 1:05:56I need someone to help me go get gas.
- 1:05:57My dad was like, told me to go help him, and I went drove him
- 1:06:01to the gas station to get gas and drove him to his car and he
- 1:06:04was like frantically trying to track me down with my, you know,
- 1:06:07analog cell phone at the time. That was given me brain cancer.
- 1:06:11But like, yeah, I drove back and it just reminds me of that.
- 1:06:15Like, what am I getting myself into I dropped him off,
- 1:06:17everything was fine. The next day he comes, I was
- 1:06:19there at open and he brought his dad with him and he was just
- 1:06:23like, man, I really appreciate that.
- 1:06:24Is that came with him so that, you know, he could drop him off
- 1:06:27and they had a pitcher of beer hung out and everything was
- 1:06:29cool. You know, you say them a lot of
- 1:06:32money. I did, you know, Anna life.
- 1:06:34Yeah. But then there's there's one
- 1:06:37time I was trying to help this gal out of Lucky's and she was
- 1:06:40obliterated. She's trying to get in her car
- 1:06:42and I was sitting there at the door of the car and I was just
- 1:06:44like she was just like fuck. You fucking asshole.
- 1:06:49You want that me? If I didn't leave and I was like
- 1:06:51lady. You are.
- 1:06:53So, there's no way I can help. Have you operate a vehicle.
- 1:06:56Please call someone to come and get you.
- 1:06:58And I was just sitting there and I videotaped it.
- 1:07:00Yeah. And just because I was like, I'm
- 1:07:02interacting with this person that's drunk smart man, smart
- 1:07:07man. But then yeah, but she's a girl.
- 1:07:10Oh yeah, yeah. And this was this was way before
- 1:07:12that was really on the collective conscious but you
- 1:07:15know, like I just made sure. Sure.
- 1:07:17And finally some guy came and picked her up and everything
- 1:07:21like that, but I posted the video and it wouldn't show her
- 1:07:24vase. But I posted the video on
- 1:07:26Facebook and it stood for about, you know, a day and then later I
- 1:07:30was like, yeah, that's fucked up, man.
- 1:07:31I just shot someone at their worst moment, you know what I
- 1:07:34mean? And it didn't show her Identity
- 1:07:36or anything, but then I so I deleted, I made a puzzle as I
- 1:07:39had earlier, made a post about someone that I was dealing with,
- 1:07:41and it was because it was a long process, man.
- 1:07:44I mean, like, it was like a 20 30 minute.
- 1:07:46Says the Walker out of the bar. Stop her from driving off and
- 1:07:49then get her to call someone to come.
- 1:07:51Pick her up cursing at me the whole time I was really
- 1:07:54frustrated but you know I just you know Alex.
- 1:07:59I'm gonna tell you this right now.
- 1:08:00You can't always be Captain save-a-ho.
- 1:08:02Oh no, no, but I'm really good. Captain save-a-ho just saying
- 1:08:07they'd be there. Be a lot of hos being saved.
- 1:08:09We try to be captain save-a-ho. No, no, no stop.
- 1:08:12You were when you were also drunk.
- 1:08:15I'm not listening. This was Throwing about herself
- 1:08:18and her friends, lots of to go get tacos, like, who's gonna who
- 1:08:22do if my friends left me? I fuck I'll be so pissed.
- 1:08:25Oh yeah, yeah yeah. Be fucked up.
- 1:08:27A lot of people out of the old town to do that in someone.
- 1:08:31It's so sad. It's sad.
- 1:08:34I cry. And I'd be like, and I look at
- 1:08:36my friends, I'm so glad. You guys are still with and
- 1:08:38their families like super drunk too, and I'm like, just shut the
- 1:08:41fuck up and get in the car. I want tacos, I will tell you, I
- 1:08:45don't, I don't operate like that.
- 1:08:46Or, you know, I really protect myself.
- 1:08:48I've gotten burned, you know, I've got, I've gotten some
- 1:08:51sticky situations and, you know, I just protect myself a little
- 1:08:56bit more, but there's been plenty of, you know, there's
- 1:08:59been plenty of interactions where I'm talking to someone and
- 1:09:01I'm like, hey, you know, and I have to whip out the hey, I'm
- 1:09:03the owner and it's so funny to watch their faces of that
- 1:09:06they're like no, you're not. Which especially a crew is only
- 1:09:11you think I'd make up that I own this place.
- 1:09:18You think I'm lying about was gonna lie.
- 1:09:21I'd come up with a better story for you.
- 1:09:23I'm gonna do that from now on. I won't go to if I go to another
- 1:09:25bar opening, I own this place but you don't actually, I know,
- 1:09:28I don't know. They won't listen to me.
- 1:09:32No, that's the the but that's that's most of the interesting
- 1:09:34interactions. I did one time one time.
- 1:09:36I'll tell you this story. Yeah.
- 1:09:38It was like my first major fight story at a barb.
- 1:09:41You know, that I had to deal with but this guy was causing
- 1:09:43problems is a punk rock show at Kirby's.
- 1:09:47And this guy just like grab the mic and like and hit the lead
- 1:09:52singer and like he grabbed the mic stand, that kind of jolted
- 1:09:54it and hit the lead singer in the face in the lips which if
- 1:09:57you're a lead singer and you ever get hit in the lips with a
- 1:10:00microphone, it's the worst pain because it's you know it's kind
- 1:10:03of like the equivalent of if you a horn player a trombone or
- 1:10:07trumpet player if you boop their fucking horn when they're
- 1:10:10playing do this, it's really painful as you're applying
- 1:10:13pressure whatever. And so we're trying to get this
- 1:10:16guy out and he's like like standing he's standing in front
- 1:10:18of me is like and then he does this like Scottie Pippen flop
- 1:10:22like you know, he's like oh you hit me, you hit me, everyone saw
- 1:10:27that, right? And I'm like, oh shit side
- 1:10:29Attract it. I took it like a Facebook
- 1:10:32dossier, and I took it to the police station and I fucking
- 1:10:36filed a report and said he threatened to kill me later on.
- 1:10:39He was messaging me. Tell me he was going to kill me
- 1:10:40and shit. Yeah.
- 1:10:42All that stuff so I've come to create stories like that.
- 1:10:45Yeah, too many. Too many.
- 1:10:47Yeah, well how about we say to? Here's to you Alex for being
- 1:10:52Captain save-a-ho, Captain, say bellies, you to be captain and
- 1:10:56also for not getting in Crazy altercations or you starting
- 1:10:59them? Yeah, I'm a lover not a fighter.
- 1:11:08I handed tune my shot and he goes, yeah, because you don't
- 1:11:11want to take a shot. Yeah, take a picture of her
- 1:11:16face. As you said like I will, I will
- 1:11:22take the whiskey shot. Emily will not.
- 1:11:25Oh yeah, that was pretty good. Yeah, see ya freaking out for no
- 1:11:28reason? Yeah.
- 1:11:30Yeah, Whiskey's good for you. You know how good it's so good.
- 1:11:36Oh, like it's not like fixing your organs good but oh yeah
- 1:11:40totally yeah heart condition whiskey.
- 1:11:45Diabetes. Whiskey has diabetes.
- 1:11:50I knew it. I mean, waiting so long serve
- 1:11:59that up like that Olympic volleyball player.
- 1:12:03Tight bikini. I just served it up to you.
- 1:12:05Hit it. He spiked it into the sand.
- 1:12:07Good job. So we have some other still
- 1:12:11funny questions for you. Okay, save some okay.
- 1:12:14And let's kind of They'll go into a couple other things like
- 1:12:17can you tell us about one of your most memorable moments in
- 1:12:21your career so far memorable? Oh good bad.
- 1:12:25Yeah, so you know here so let me just give you so you know I
- 1:12:31played in a band that started in Winfield Kansas.
- 1:12:39Wait are you guys from Winfield? Now we just got a lot of people
- 1:12:42and star you Laotian. Yeah my Whole family.
- 1:13:02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We started when I went to
- 1:13:04Southwestern and the band started in Winfield.
- 1:13:07So but so for us, you know, we were playing we're playing shows
- 1:13:11at the Cotillion lot because we were the popular band at the
- 1:13:14time. We were being asked to support
- 1:13:16the national acts. I played with Vanilla Ice, they
- 1:13:18were real big fish. Cherry Poppin, daddies?
- 1:13:21You know I open for just about anyone in the 90s 2000s.
- 1:13:25We open for Mighty Mighty Bosstones my open for just a ton
- 1:13:30of Acts and a lot of them happened at the meeting.
- 1:13:34Yeah. I mean we were how old were you
- 1:13:36when you when this happened I was in the band from 18 to my
- 1:13:40late 20s. So so around this time was like
- 1:13:4320 something. So yes.
- 1:13:44So young back then I was young blood.
- 1:13:47Make it no money. We were playing those shows for
- 1:13:48nothing but you do for your heart.
- 1:13:51Oh yeah. And for the people and for the
- 1:13:52exposure which people bitch about now, but back then it was
- 1:13:55like, fuck out. We'll play for exposure.
- 1:13:57Yeah, exactly. Put us in front of that crowd.
- 1:13:59And it worked no name on that flyer.
- 1:14:01So then flash, I remember the first time we got an opening act
- 1:14:06show at the Cotillion, and I remembered Gathering the band
- 1:14:10and the house, by the railroad tracks on 11th Street, in
- 1:14:14Winfield Kansas. Is called it the Roadhouse.
- 1:14:16There's a just a dingy fucking house that a couple guys were
- 1:14:21renting. We would full of fucking Natty
- 1:14:24Light cans and mean I like was cheap.
- 1:14:28Canned meat tuna, Vienna sausage, whatever meat came
- 1:14:31into. Can they had it on hand, spam.
- 1:14:34Oh, come on, girl, fucking love. Spam Loco Moco.
- 1:14:37Yes. So, you know, I remember
- 1:14:42Gathering the band and the upstairs.
- 1:14:45Office and was like, guys we got a show at the Cotillion.
- 1:14:48It's this is the this stuff's going to start happening for me
- 1:14:51like this. Is it really because?
- 1:14:58Yeah but so then Flash Forward to so we took over the Cotillion
- 1:15:03on my birthday. March 7th, my birthday is March
- 1:15:0716. I see a hot mess.
- 1:15:15We are hard to please. Are you watching?
- 1:15:18Our love people. We are lovers.
- 1:15:21My lover's no we're good gift givers what you want but then
- 1:15:28torture, you treat us badly. I'll be a fucking Indian giver.
- 1:15:33Remember that time in 1944 when I gave you that ring, that you
- 1:15:36wanted all the time that you pointed out that?
- 1:15:38Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:15:41So so I tell the guys, I'll you know, It's become so the March
- 1:15:457th, we take over the Cotillion and I walk in on the first show
- 1:15:48is Split Lip Rayfield. We after we took over and Split
- 1:15:51Lip Rayfield if no one knows is a band that came from actually,
- 1:15:56they started at Kirby's and they open 40.
- 1:15:58Fill back in the day, where was it?
- 1:16:01Was oval split the brave field, and Reverend Horton Heat.
- 1:16:05And it was a show at the Cotillion that was pretty
- 1:16:09popular but the first show where it was under our ownership, my
- 1:16:14Guidance was split lip and I walk in and I sit down in the
- 1:16:19desk that the old owner used to negotiate deals like yeah where
- 1:16:23I would like go into his office and he would pay me, nothing or
- 1:16:25whatever and I'm sitting on the other side of the desk and that
- 1:16:28was a real memorable moment, was a really weird and it was in a
- 1:16:33weird part of my life too. Because both, my parents had
- 1:16:35just died in 2017 and we took and I was dealing with all of
- 1:16:40that. Going through a breakup
- 1:16:42post-divorce, the first serious breakup, and I somehow managed
- 1:16:46to get everything done that needed to get done with the
- 1:16:48Cotillion and got it. Yeah.
- 1:16:50And walked in there and it was a dream come true to get to that
- 1:16:55level. So, for that one and say, yeah,
- 1:17:00well, there's always time because here's the solo because,
- 1:17:05damn, that's a real. Wow.
- 1:17:07Yeah, it was, it was really, I mean, it was just one of those
- 1:17:09like, I can't believe because I, you know, when I came To wit to
- 1:17:15Winfield. I remember one of the first
- 1:17:19shows I went to go see was no doubt 311 at the Cotillion and
- 1:17:23they'll no doubt three-level. Yeah, no doubt 311 played at the
- 1:17:27Cotillion somewhere around 1996 or something like that.
- 1:17:32We're five. Maybe, maybe even 1994 probably
- 1:17:3695. Anyway, you know, that was like,
- 1:17:38I was like, this is an amazing space.
- 1:17:39So then they become, you know, the owner.
- 1:17:43Yeah. Was amazing and and walking
- 1:17:47through there when it's empty is kind of creepy but it's a really
- 1:17:50beautiful thing. I'll tell you what sometime you
- 1:17:53guys. You know, when I'm not, if you
- 1:17:55want to, if you get a host that that deems, it necessary, come
- 1:18:00out and broadcast from the Cotillion.
- 1:18:04I'll tell you what, it's a really cool.
- 1:18:06Like it's a really, you can either broadcast from the stage,
- 1:18:08but when you're in that space and it's empty and you walk to
- 1:18:11the center of the Dome, it's a really interesting.
- 1:18:14Thing acoustical anomaly it so you can hear your voice travel.
- 1:18:18Like if you were whispering in the center of the Cotillion, you
- 1:18:21can hear it on the extremities, you know, just that was her.
- 1:18:23But I've done some things that night like jammed with people
- 1:18:28but I will extend that invite to you guys if with the with the
- 1:18:31proper guess. And maybe it's a musical guest
- 1:18:33because it might be fun to record them.
- 1:18:35Like playing acoustic in that space.
- 1:18:36That is true. But yeah, come and make sure
- 1:18:39it's on the week that I don't have my kids and I'll I'll play
- 1:18:42host to you guys. I meant, you know, you know, you
- 1:18:44can An interview there with your schedule.
- 1:18:46Well, I mean this is the week. I don't have my kids so every
- 1:18:49other week from now. Oh okay.
- 1:18:55He has his kids. Okay.
- 1:18:57He has a future remember? Yeah.
- 1:19:01That's right. That's right.
- 1:19:02That's we're living in clouds. We're living beds.
- 1:19:04Yes. So cheers to that.
- 1:19:05Yeah. That would be.
- 1:19:08How was I think you guys would dig it?
- 1:19:11I think you guys would love it. That's when we know who will
- 1:19:15have made it. You to our head and turn.
- 1:19:20Nobody clinked with him. My name is shawni.
- 1:19:28Did I say that right? Look, I'm But Connie.
- 1:19:34Wait, I thought that was bitch. I thought you finally was bitch.
- 1:19:39I don't. So, you know, I came over here
- 1:19:41when I was two and so I remember a lot.
- 1:19:47Out of my mind, gonna English we're being coming?
- 1:19:49Well, I mean most ruthless first.
- 1:19:51Yeah. And, you know, we were
- 1:19:53westernized Malaysia. So, I mean, they taught English
- 1:19:55in the schools that I want, and then I remember my mom and my
- 1:19:58sister talking native tongue, but it faded two times.
- 1:20:03So, yeah, yeah. So I mean, we're all.
- 1:20:05We're all neighbors late. Yeah.
- 1:20:06Laos and and, and Vietnam and Malaysia.
- 1:20:09Just boom, bang bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
- 1:20:13One of my, if I ever make it big, In my real estate life.
- 1:20:19I was really thinking about taking all of us too loud.
- 1:20:23Oh, you want us to live in the ranch to just us the fields?
- 1:20:27You want us to be on the field? Yes, in my area.
- 1:20:29I mean, I'm not mad I come from a ranch.
- 1:20:31See, I think you get it, you get to the Asian Peninsula.
- 1:20:34And I mean, Asia, Asia are will take you anywhere for 20 bucks.
- 1:20:40A resort is 20 bucks. I know.
- 1:20:41That's what is crazy man. That's all inclusive.
- 1:20:44I know. When I was in Kuala, Lumpur, you
- 1:20:49know, and it was attached to like a five-story mall.
- 1:20:52Yeah. The grocery store the, in the
- 1:20:54basement with the durian or actually no durian allowed in
- 1:20:57that space, they were like no Dorian.
- 1:20:58But wait is that the fruit right?
- 1:21:01That's the this a fruit that smells like five yellow but it
- 1:21:10smells like, you smells like dead.
- 1:21:17Do you eat it? No me neither.
- 1:21:20I can't the balut. You know, I'll eat the bird but
- 1:21:24I will not fucking eat that shit.
- 1:21:26I don't know. I like rambutan rambutans, my
- 1:21:31favorite. Oh yeah, that's good.
- 1:21:33Yeah, that's really good. Yeah, then we went to a went to
- 1:21:36Malaysia and we had this we went to an Indian area or actually it
- 1:21:41was a malaria. It was a, they did saute and we
- 1:21:44had such a eating contest and I'm just going to point put this
- 1:21:47Us out there for the listeners. That, if you go to a foreign
- 1:21:49country, do not engage in any contest with no, no, I do not.
- 1:21:55Do not, do not engage disengage. And if they say pussy, won't use
- 1:22:00a pussy. Won't pussy.
- 1:22:04Won't not a good idea. You know, thinking of Malaysia,
- 1:22:10uh, you know, in-laws back in 2019.
- 1:22:14And, you know, it's like very modernized now.
- 1:22:16Yeah. Like back in where my family are
- 1:22:19from like it's very like how do I say this?
- 1:22:22Like very poor, very poor. And I think like the best thing
- 1:22:27ever in. Like I wish here in the US will
- 1:22:31have this is street food at night.
- 1:22:33Oh yeah. It's like the best thing.
- 1:22:35Yeah, it's like everywhere everywhere everywhere.
- 1:22:38Just sad when you don't see that in.
- 1:22:40Yeah. Most I mean well and maybe like
- 1:22:42we like, you know, west coast, East Coast.
- 1:22:44Yeah, I think the food truck. Is kind of like that a little,
- 1:22:48but it's just not in the midwest because because the cost of a
- 1:22:53food truck versus the cost of a brick-and-mortar, it sound like
- 1:22:56nothing. It's like very different in
- 1:22:59California, right? Because, like, you know, like to
- 1:23:02have Equitable space and California and like ride the
- 1:23:04tides of the, whether the neighborhood comes and goes.
- 1:23:07So it makes sense to have a food truck in California.
- 1:23:09And plus, it's fair weather all year long.
- 1:23:11Yeah, like in Wichita or in the midwest.
- 1:23:15I mean, there's a whole winter season.
- 1:23:17You have to deal with people just not even wanting to be out,
- 1:23:19you know? Yes.
- 1:23:20So that's hard to survive like that.
- 1:23:22Yeah. When I went allows, oh my God,
- 1:23:24that's what I did every night with my with my cousins and my
- 1:23:27family, and I loved every single moment of it.
- 1:23:30I ate every fucking, every fucking venue.
- 1:23:34Then I can find, and I'll just eat everything, but I had, I
- 1:23:38vote to your point here. Yeah, most of the food trucks.
- 1:23:44I go. And if I want to order something
- 1:23:46I'm like I'm not Not going to pay that price because like, in
- 1:23:48my hand, yeah, I'm coming from different food, truck
- 1:23:52experiences and I'm like Zach, that makes zero sense to me.
- 1:23:55Also, your tacos are not authentic.
- 1:23:57You want me to eat out of a flour tortilla?
- 1:23:59I don't think so. Do you want me to pay?
- 1:24:00You want me to pay $10 for two tacos and fucking our sour cream
- 1:24:06to you call this pico de gallo? It's like, it's like when people
- 1:24:14try, like, it's like Asian food to, as well.
- 1:24:16So, Like they try to, you know, cops, yes, why should I?
- 1:24:22Oh, yeah, and you're just like, it's like Panda Express and
- 1:24:24you're just like really well, there's a time and a place for
- 1:24:28yeah. Yeah.
- 1:24:29Yeah. Like a walnut.
- 1:24:31Want to shrink is pretty good. My, my aunt is man's direct is
- 1:24:38the regional director for panda, and then I'd be like, hook me up
- 1:24:43with some walnut shrimp girl. Yep.
- 1:24:47But I pay, I got to represent her some time.
- 1:24:51Oh yeah. So we're really getting into
- 1:24:53some work, life's, tough balance type of things.
- 1:24:55Now we want to ask you like what do you enjoy to do outside of
- 1:24:59being a boss. That's funny.
- 1:25:00Boss ass bitch. I have a really bad habit of
- 1:25:04making all of my passions business, really bad at all.
- 1:25:12Podcasts that are business-related reading books,
- 1:25:15that are business-related, that type of thing.
- 1:25:16Or what do you mean? Well, like if I'm Monopoly, I'm
- 1:25:21buying this fucking house. So 500.
- 1:25:25Yeah, I pick hobbies that. I then try to monetize, so, like
- 1:25:30Neva hobby shook like a sneaker collection.
- 1:25:34I'm a sneakerhead. Okay.
- 1:25:36Okay, I'm a sneakerhead and I, and I'm also you.
- 1:25:38Look, here's the thing, okay? You don't.
- 1:25:42Here's what I will say. You don't become overweight.
- 1:25:45If you don't have some OCD behaviors, you don't like I've
- 1:25:48also lost 130 pounds, you don't do that, without OCD behaviors,
- 1:25:52you don't decide to own five businesses without OCD
- 1:25:55behaviors. And so, if you pick something
- 1:25:57that you're a hobby with like these shoes, I've been I
- 1:26:00suddenly started get back into him because I was a sneakerhead.
- 1:26:03When I was young, and then when I got divorced, I had some
- 1:26:06Jordan fours, original Jordan fours, the breads, the black and
- 1:26:11red In fours, were the first Nike sneakers.
- 1:26:14I bought with my money that I saved.
- 1:26:19Yeah, but the classic breads. So, look up Jordan for bread and
- 1:26:26I kept them, I kept them through high school, middle school
- 1:26:32college and I had them with me in the house.
- 1:26:34I lived with my ex-wife. Yeah.
- 1:26:36I got divorced, I moved to a much smaller pipe first
- 1:26:39apartment than a small house and Kept it around and but they were
- 1:26:44falling apart. They were like disintegrating
- 1:26:47and she threw them away. But I wanted to put well, you
- 1:26:53know, in all fairness, I didn't pull them out of her house.
- 1:26:58You're good divorcee. We're good pals.
- 1:27:02I understand why I didn't take that shit with me, but then I
- 1:27:04suddenly went on a kick and I start buying shoes and I started
- 1:27:06buying shoes, I'm sorry, I buy shoes.
- 1:27:08Yeah, then I launched my own like side.
- 1:27:12Little okay, shoe trade. So I'm selling shoes on goat and
- 1:27:17eBay. DD have a favorite pair of shoes
- 1:27:23style, like someone's that you've kept.
- 1:27:25And then I have a second question.
- 1:27:27So I am right now. I'm a real big fan of the Jordan
- 1:27:313's, just about any color way, but I'm wearing desert elephants
- 1:27:35right now. I've got, I mean I like the Air
- 1:27:38Jordan Ones. Yeah, I like the Air Jordan
- 1:27:40Ones, but Jordan for is that I just showed you.
- 1:27:44Yeah. Yeah. $500.
- 1:27:51I mean, he's like I can get more.
- 1:27:54I mean, you could, you could afford it, you can afford it.
- 1:27:57Where do you see $500? Uncle.
- 1:28:01That's the that's the black cement.
- 1:28:02So that, that was that came out a couple years ago. 58 over
- 1:28:05there. Yeah.
- 1:28:06You 158 over there. And that's kind of low.
- 1:28:08I think they're about with two PS, knock X.
- 1:28:11They may be used, but I have some dead stock.
- 1:28:13Deadstock means they've never been worn.
- 1:28:15So I keep a couple dead stock and then I have some that I
- 1:28:17wear. So it's the like do when you're
- 1:28:21buying like these types of shoes, like you mean that you
- 1:28:24buy some for yourself that you're going to wear and then
- 1:28:26you buy some to hold onto. Okay.
- 1:28:28So that you can later. So, I'm the kind of guy that,
- 1:28:30like, if I buy toys, I don't like to take them out of their
- 1:28:32box. So, I'm that the person is,
- 1:28:35like, you know, there's some things that can be played with,
- 1:28:38but there's some things you just keep in, it's like, mint.
- 1:28:41Like, you know, that meant to like you in five years, you sell
- 1:28:43it seems like I want that untouched.
- 1:28:45I told one of my ex-boyfriends a long time ago that I was really
- 1:28:48into Dragon Ball Z and so for the longest time he would buy me
- 1:28:53like Dragon Ball Z, naught action figures but you know just
- 1:28:56like some really good like prop up ones like Expensive ones that
- 1:29:00you don't play with. My older sister will make so
- 1:29:03much fun of me because I have nieces and nephews we still do.
- 1:29:06But actually my nephew's will come to my house and they will
- 1:29:09want to grab them. And then my sister's, I was
- 1:29:11like, no, no, yeah, yeah, these are not toys.
- 1:29:13So I had, I have a bunch of Star Wars figures that I used to hang
- 1:29:17on my office wall, my son would come in and press R2D2's button
- 1:29:20so you make a noise with another?
- 1:29:22Yeah, exactly. Yes.
- 1:29:25So this boyfriend sounds nice. What did he do to fuck up?
- 1:29:28I know that was x0. He did a lot of bad.
- 1:29:31We don't speak about him. Those are pretty pricey right
- 1:29:43now. Click on that goat link.
- 1:29:45What are those Kobe's go for 700?
- 1:29:49Well I'm I'm kind of like a bought that so all I'm trying to
- 1:29:52do is like move enough stop. Stop So I list I listen to this
- 1:29:56camera lens, I had for sale and it's funny.
- 1:30:00I was talking to this kid. He was Asian, thank you.
- 1:30:02And he was like, my grandpa has you're welcome at the Sigma 70
- 1:30:07or 100 to 200 Lana, 7200 lens and he was like, hey are you
- 1:30:11interested in any trades? I was like, yeah, listen, he's
- 1:30:13like I got a Tamron 100 to 300. I was like, nah, dude, I've got
- 1:30:16to Sony's, I don't need that Lindsay's line and I almost said
- 1:30:18to him because he was Asian, I'm not trying to be racist.
- 1:30:22Do you have any Sneakers? But I didn't, I kept it in.
- 1:30:24I was like, I don't want to Because he's Asian, maybe he
- 1:30:26didn't like sneakers. I'm gonna and then.
- 1:30:28And then the moment he's like, unless you want some dunks, I
- 1:30:31was like, whoa, what are you talking?
- 1:30:33What do you got? What do you think?
- 1:30:34Shows me five pairs of dunks that he has one's a supreme
- 1:30:37Supreme collab dunk. Which is worth 400.
- 1:30:41He trains me 500 or a thousand dollars worth of shoes for this
- 1:30:45$600 lens. So now I got to move those, but
- 1:30:48I'm trying to get to a Travis Scott, collab Nike.
- 1:30:55I'm probably boring day everybody else with this is this
- 1:30:57like this shit Geeks me out. Yeah there's a lot of people who
- 1:31:01are very interested in this up and like I was I just said like
- 1:31:04jokingly but also true like alligator boots we you know
- 1:31:08Mexicans we were Booth well I gotta tell you what's your like
- 1:31:11$700? Sure are not cheap.
- 1:31:13Yeah, you know there's a funny thing about men's fashion versus
- 1:31:17ladies fashion is that lady with the exception of the designer
- 1:31:20stuff, like you're saying there's a lot of affordable
- 1:31:24because women's Russians go in and out so quickly.
- 1:31:26There's a lot of affordable things you can buy it there and
- 1:31:30still be stylish which one Is this one?
- 1:31:40I'm a liar? Yes, I will.
- 1:31:44Yeah, looks good. I think you Emily would worry
- 1:31:46that Emily. I cannot see you with that.
- 1:31:48Yeah, that's why because I love it.
- 1:31:50You would know where crap like that.
- 1:31:52Yes. Because that's exactly.
- 1:31:56That's the Asian in you I was sitting there at my
- 1:32:15family's house and I was like, I want some balloons Yaga, she can
- 1:32:19sit around a table and relate. Here is my brother and we talked
- 1:32:24about fishing all the time right now.
- 1:32:34Yeah, it's really well. You know, here's a funny thing.
- 1:32:37We were always told if you tour over in like Japan to not price
- 1:32:41your merchandise like because in America you're sitting there
- 1:32:44like, okay, I bought this shirt for five bucks, wholesale, I'm
- 1:32:47going to sell it for 10. That's 100, a market.
- 1:32:50If you go to Japan and you try to sell a ten dollar, sure
- 1:32:53they'll be like what's wrong with it was cheap.
- 1:32:56So they're like, no, you got to price your shit at like, 30
- 1:32:58bucks, 40 bucks? Because this, yeah, it's kind
- 1:33:01of, its kind of interesting but it's like, I, Um, make a saline.
- 1:33:04Sure, and just do press on and I'd be like, this is 50, 60
- 1:33:07bucks. Well, everyone's trying to start
- 1:33:11a business over there. Yeah, they're big on the
- 1:33:14entrepreneurship themselves. So, to answer your question, my
- 1:33:17but my real problem is, is making all my hobbies like
- 1:33:21music. I would say that, what do I like
- 1:33:23to do my spare time? Well, I like to play music, but
- 1:33:26I play music for money now. So like, you know, and I mean.
- 1:33:29Do I like shoes? Yeah.
- 1:33:30But I'm buying shoes. That try to sell them for a
- 1:33:32profit. Yeah.
- 1:33:33Do I read? I mean I read a lot in not like
- 1:33:37a traditional book says, it's good for the soul.
- 1:33:41Honestly, I'm sure to be honest, I don't read good.
- 1:33:46I don't know. I love that.
- 1:33:48This is Adidas. I do, you know, before I met
- 1:33:56Fanny, I didn't read no fucking bugs, or nothing whatsoever.
- 1:33:59And then like this bitch really made me think, like, she really
- 1:34:02pick my Brain and I'm like, just I really want
- 1:34:23but anyways you know how you're in a band and everything.
- 1:34:25Do you still sing for fun or do you be still?
- 1:34:28Yeah yeah I mean with Monterey Jack it's still considered fun.
- 1:34:32Yeah I have a lot of I enjoy doing that.
- 1:34:36That's just good. Release and your therapy.
- 1:34:39Yeah, 100%. Yeah, it's really enjoyable for
- 1:34:43me. I do like to still sing.
- 1:34:47That's good. So we're going to transition to
- 1:34:50something that we're calling a lightning round.
- 1:34:52Yes. Okay.
- 1:34:53And I did text you. This one ocean?
- 1:34:55Yeah. That way, you can't because
- 1:34:56that's not really lightning but we like to think I got.
- 1:35:00Yeah, I'm there but it's going to take me a little.
- 1:35:01Yeah, yeah exactly. Okay, so we didn't say he would
- 1:35:05lead this lightning round. Do you want to leave?
- 1:35:07You want me to do it? I believe.
- 1:35:08Okay, leave. All right, you go, if you have
- 1:35:11an, if you could have any superpower, what would it be and
- 1:35:14why x-ray vision, fucking Dusty. I lied.
- 1:35:23It's not x-ray vision. I think my Power would be speed.
- 1:35:38I just rush in, you know, just like get a bunch of shit done in
- 1:35:41a small amount of time, I was gonna say, x-ray vision.
- 1:35:44So I could go out to the beach and see, you know, do the
- 1:35:48teleport. I mean, we can just Google it
- 1:35:50now. That's true.
- 1:35:51Yeah, super me. You know, I just barely notice
- 1:35:56about AI, Emily. What chat jpg?
- 1:36:00Oh yeah. I was gonna say my superpower
- 1:36:01would be Ted GPT. Nothing about it shoulder.
- 1:36:04Jeff. I've been trying to use chat GB
- 1:36:07to hear nothing but Flack for it.
- 1:36:11What you? You gave me Flack for it.
- 1:36:14I didn't know nothing about it. Talking about the I was talking
- 1:36:17about Rai those. I Fanny, we were sitting here
- 1:36:21storyboarding and I was like, wait, what, what do you say?
- 1:36:25What the fuck I was like, dude, Dusty used it recently and she's
- 1:36:29like, what the fuck are you talking about?
- 1:36:30My God. Oh my God, Emily.
- 1:36:32Anyways, back to the lightning. What's the most ridiculous rumor
- 1:36:35you ever heard about yourself? Oh my God.
- 1:36:37I can't even repeat it. You better figure it out.
- 1:36:46You played the flip fifth. You can say that he the fan.
- 1:36:50Well yeah it's just gonna Lucky's bathroom wall.
- 1:36:55Some people. I had the mind of a someone that
- 1:37:04was seasoned and so like, you know, I had some fun then people
- 1:37:08write about another one that's just cold.
- 1:37:13Okay perfect. Okay.
- 1:37:15What was the worst haircut you ever?
- 1:37:17Had got a rat tail. My sister's been trying to grow
- 1:37:24one for riding fucking do it. Kitty don't fucking bitch the
- 1:37:3180s man I'm just like I had to suffer through mullets and now
- 1:37:35motherfuckers doing that shit on purpose.
- 1:37:38Okay can I say this real quick? Yeah.
- 1:37:39Katie when you first sent me that image of you bleaching your
- 1:37:42hair and you said that you look Korean oh I love to so hard
- 1:37:45because I didn't realize that you intentionally didn't.
- 1:37:49I was like I'm so sorry you're looking great.
- 1:37:53She look is yellow but she was gonna tone it.
- 1:37:55You guys I got your back. Katie, I got your back.
- 1:37:58I got your back. I haven't even seen this and
- 1:38:00that's my sister. Oh my God.
- 1:38:03Whatever, she's trying to go rat tail.
- 1:38:05So yeah. Yeah, she's out of it.
- 1:38:07I skipped a moment when I skipped the achy-breaky.
- 1:38:10Big mistake, e, if you could eat only one food for the rest of
- 1:38:16your life, what it would be like.
- 1:38:17Oh, so you're right. What was the worst thing you
- 1:38:20ever eaten? So I was telling Dusty this on
- 1:38:25the patio that I used to do this podcast and we was the same.
- 1:38:30It was like we did the segment where we ate gross shit and it
- 1:38:35was never never. It was a Malaysian bird nest.
- 1:38:39Drink, what bird nest? It was like made from something
- 1:38:43pressed through bird's nest and I'm like, what is that?
- 1:38:46It was horrible sticks and twigs.
- 1:38:47Yeah, it was gross, whatever it was some kind, they put it on
- 1:38:51there. If you could switch lives with
- 1:38:54anyone for a day, who would be and why?
- 1:38:59If I could switch, you can see me.
- 1:39:00I'm not, I know some of these questions are a little hard,
- 1:39:08Ellen Degeneres, and the Ellen's pretty funny.
- 1:39:11I would love to be on her her $14.25 day, Christmas countdown.
- 1:39:15There you go. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:39:19Have you ever broken a bone? I have not good for you.
- 1:39:22Christine. If you could be any animal for a
- 1:39:25day, what will you choose a bear?
- 1:39:28A Cuda was the funniest joke you ever
- 1:39:41heard but and know my heart. I thought about texting this one
- 1:39:48to you because I was like I would not know how to answer
- 1:39:50that. I'm okay.
- 1:39:50What do you call? What do you got?
- 1:39:53What looks like a dad joke. Sorry.
- 1:39:54Okay what what? What do you call a black guy
- 1:39:57that flies a plane. A pilot you racist.
- 1:40:00Fuck. That was the most embarrassing
- 1:40:26thing you ever happened to you on a date on a date.
- 1:40:34What's the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me?
- 1:40:38So right after I got a divorce, my first like online dating
- 1:40:41experience was as gal. That was a little bit older than
- 1:40:43me, took her to the Monarch is the first time anyone saw me out
- 1:40:46without my ex-wife and she got drunk off of one.
- 1:40:49Glass. Of wine was all over me.
- 1:40:52And it was, it was bad, it was just like stumbling drunk trying
- 1:40:58to make out with me at the table and everyone was like, what the
- 1:41:00hell, you know, that kind of thing.
- 1:41:02So fucking sloppy, drunk, sloppy drunk, and you can pick three
- 1:41:06songs for your life Anthem. What would it be?
- 1:41:08Hmm? Okay.
- 1:41:12It would be serious. Inner City Blues by Marvin Gaye.
- 1:41:22Write that down. Good day.
- 1:41:24Bye Ice Cube. Oh, yeah.
- 1:41:30And party hard by Andrew w.k. Fuck everybody.
- 1:41:32I love it. When you talk shit on, it will
- 1:41:36take you outside. Fight you myself.
- 1:41:41Well Alex, thank you so much for an thank you guys.
- 1:41:44I really I really appreciate it. We appreciate everything for you
- 1:41:48for you. I everything you've.
- 1:41:50I think I'm drunk. We have that some shots.
- 1:41:54Can you take over? No seriously we do really
- 1:41:58appreciate you coming on the show.
