- 0:08Speaker 1: versatile hunting apparel for the stand, saddle or blind. First
- 0:13Speaker 1: Light Go Farther, Stay Longer, and now your host, Mark Kenyon.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. This week on
- 0:23Speaker 2: the show, we are running Jared Sheffler through our what
- 0:26Speaker 2: would you Do? Gauntlet, which I will be presenting Jared
- 0:29Speaker 2: with some of the toughest deer hunting situations I can
- 0:32Speaker 2: think of to see exactly how we handle it. All right,
- 0:53Speaker 2: welcome back to the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to
- 0:57Speaker 2: you by first Light there Camo for Initiative and the
- 1:01Speaker 2: brand new white Tail line. It's good stuff, go check
- 1:04Speaker 2: it out over at first Light dot com. And today's episode,
- 1:08Speaker 2: we are continuing the What would You Do? Series. Today's
- 1:11Speaker 2: guest is Jared Scheffler, and I'm gonna give you some
- 1:15Speaker 2: background on Jared and some background on the series just
- 1:17Speaker 2: in case you're new the series. The what would you
- 1:20Speaker 2: Do Gauntlet basically entails me running really good deer hunters
- 1:25Speaker 2: through a series of hypothetical deer hunting situations. So I
- 1:29Speaker 2: try to present a very specific situation, some certain circumstances like, hey,
- 1:36Speaker 2: you're going to be in this state with these conditions
- 1:39Speaker 2: at this time of year, and here's what's going on.
- 1:42Speaker 2: What would you do? Why would you do that? How
- 1:45Speaker 2: would you do that? That's the kind of stuff we're
- 1:47Speaker 2: going for. And the whole the idea behind this is
- 1:50Speaker 2: just to get a different way of learning from these people. Right,
- 1:53Speaker 2: there's all sorts of hunting podcasts out there. There's a
- 1:56Speaker 2: lot of these people who have been heard from on
- 1:58Speaker 2: many of these podcasts many times. So I'm trying to
- 2:01Speaker 2: find new ways that we can learn, new ways that
- 2:03Speaker 2: we can grow and gain experience from these people's stories,
- 2:09Speaker 2: you know, explanations and lessons. So that's what we're trying
- 2:13Speaker 2: to achieve here today. And like I mentioned, the guest,
- 2:15Speaker 2: our guest today is Jared Scheffler from Whitetail Adrenaline. If
- 2:20Speaker 2: he haven't seen Whitetail Adrenaline, this is some different kind
- 2:24Speaker 2: of stuff. This is a style of hunting that is aggressive,
- 2:29Speaker 2: that is mobile, and is essentially all on the ground.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Jared kind of pioneered a lot of this stuff over
- 2:36Speaker 2: the last I don't know, maybe fifteen plus years now
- 2:40Speaker 2: with his videos showing you know, very aggressive hunting techniques
- 2:44Speaker 2: on the ground with a bow, sometimes just stalking up
- 2:47Speaker 2: on white tails, sometimes setting up on the ground and
- 2:50Speaker 2: ambushing white tails in this kind of way, sometimes using
- 2:53Speaker 2: a handheld tacoy. Jared's very good at what he does,
- 2:58Speaker 2: and what I want to do today was understand a
- 3:01Speaker 2: little bit more of how and why he does what
- 3:04Speaker 2: he does. So, as I mentioned, presenting him with a
- 3:08Speaker 2: bunch of different situations, some of these out in the
- 3:10Speaker 2: planes where he does a lot of stuff. Sometimes back
- 3:13Speaker 2: in more challenging scenarios like back east or in the
- 3:16Speaker 2: Upper Midwest, timber, open country, good conditions, bad conditions. I
- 3:21Speaker 2: try to get Jared to kind of consider all these
- 3:23Speaker 2: scenarios so that we deer hunters that maybe have a
- 3:26Speaker 2: difference that of circumstances can still take something from Jared.
- 3:30Speaker 2: So I would encourage you, even if you are, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 2: always a tree stand hunter or always a saddle hunter,
- 3:37Speaker 2: give this one a listen. Consider some of these new ideas.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Consider the thought process that Jared puts into his strategy.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Even if you think this stuff's crazy. Hunting on the ground,
- 3:49Speaker 2: slipping around, stalking in on deer, or calling deer in
- 3:52Speaker 2: on the ground, or using a decoy. If all that
- 3:55Speaker 2: sounds a little out there, I would still encourage you
- 3:58Speaker 2: to give this one a listen and think about is
- 4:01Speaker 2: there any way that this could inform what I do
- 4:04Speaker 2: to make myself better? Is there any little trick you
- 4:06Speaker 2: can take from here? Is there anything you can take
- 4:08Speaker 2: from his scenario that might be different than yours? And
- 4:12Speaker 2: do this thing we've talked about, like parallel thinking, you know,
- 4:15Speaker 2: take an idea from one world and apply it to
- 4:18Speaker 2: your world. And I think that's something we can all
- 4:20Speaker 2: do here with Jared. Not to mention, just try some
- 4:23Speaker 2: of the stuff he's talking about, just the way he
- 4:25Speaker 2: talks about it too. I mean, for many years I
- 4:28Speaker 2: thought I was stuck in a tree and had to
- 4:31Speaker 2: have a perfectly prepared situation to kill a deer. Once
- 4:36Speaker 2: I started trying some of these things to myself, I
- 4:39Speaker 2: came to realize that it is much more possible than
- 4:42Speaker 2: you realize to kill a deer on the ground without
- 4:44Speaker 2: a blind with a bow in the open. It just
- 4:50Speaker 2: takes some experience. It takes ripping the band aid off
- 4:53Speaker 2: and trying new things. Tony and I talk about this
- 4:55Speaker 2: a lot, right, try new things, if for no other
- 4:58Speaker 2: reason than the fact you are going to learn, you
- 5:01Speaker 2: are going to grow. And I guarantee you what Jared
- 5:05Speaker 2: proposes here, what he discusses, if you try even a
- 5:08Speaker 2: tenth of that, you will learn some new stuff. So
- 5:12Speaker 2: that's my long winded way of pitching you on this one.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I think you're gonna enjoy it. Great guy, interesting guy.
- 5:18Speaker 2: If you haven't checked out his videos, you should. They're wild,
- 5:22Speaker 2: they're entertaining. I can't believe some of the stuff they do.
- 5:26Speaker 2: So I hope you enjoy our chat here with Jared.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I hope your season is going well if you have
- 5:31Speaker 2: started already, if you're one of the lucky ones with
- 5:33Speaker 2: a September opener, and if not, man, we are getting
- 5:36Speaker 2: close to October as we speak, at least when this
- 5:40Speaker 2: episode comes out. I am in Alaska right now, but
- 5:45Speaker 2: hopefully I'll be back from that safe and sound here
- 5:48Speaker 2: and chomping a bit and ready to rock and roll
- 5:50Speaker 2: White Tails in a matter of days. So without further ado,
- 5:53Speaker 2: let's get to my chap with Jared. All right here
- 6:02Speaker 2: with me back on the show is mister Jared Scheffler. Jared,
- 6:06Speaker 2: thank you for being here.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Thank you for having me. Appreciate it.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I'm excited to have you on this one. We've done
- 6:11Speaker 2: this mini series over the last like three or four years,
- 6:15Speaker 2: I think has proven to be one that folks really enjoy.
- 6:18Speaker 2: It's fun for me because you get this different kind
- 6:21Speaker 2: of look at how people do things and why people
- 6:24Speaker 2: do things. And you're someone who already is so unique
- 6:27Speaker 2: compared to a lot of other folks in the hunting
- 6:29Speaker 2: world that getting your unique take in this unique format
- 6:33Speaker 2: I think is going to be a lot of fun.
- 6:34Speaker 3: So well, there's more than one way, you know.
- 6:37Speaker 4: I love it because there's a lot of different strategies
- 6:41Speaker 4: and angles that work, you know, and we do something
- 6:43Speaker 4: that's maybe not as mainstream or whatnot, but it works
- 6:49Speaker 4: good for us. So I'll let you continue.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, I think that's that's a perfect way
- 6:54Speaker 2: to describe what you do and why this is I
- 6:57Speaker 2: think a good way to dive into it. And I
- 7:00Speaker 2: gotta say, I've been watching rewatching some of your videos
- 7:04Speaker 2: and have my sons watching with me, and and they
- 7:07Speaker 2: have started to refer to you as like the crazy guy,
- 7:10Speaker 2: Like that guy's crazy. So I think that they're catching
- 7:13Speaker 2: on to what many other folks have said when they
- 7:16Speaker 2: see some of the stuff you do, which is maybe
- 7:18Speaker 2: a little crazy to some people, but awfully effective, and
- 7:21Speaker 2: so I'm excited to dig into it. So it's all
- 7:24Speaker 2: that said, I want to be respectful of your time.
- 7:27Speaker 2: You got a lot going on. It's you know, fall
- 7:31Speaker 2: is very quickly approaching. So do you feel like you
- 7:34Speaker 2: understand the game plan here with this what would you
- 7:37Speaker 2: do series? Are you game to get through it?
- 7:40Speaker 3: I think?
- 7:40Speaker 2: So, all right, we're gonna We're gonna start with some
- 7:43Speaker 2: soft balls and then kind of move our way through.
- 7:45Speaker 2: All right, Okay, so let's imagine this first scenario. This
- 7:49Speaker 2: is this is going to help us understand kind of
- 7:52Speaker 2: how your mind, how you get your mind right and
- 7:54Speaker 2: ready for a hunt. Let's imagine that this coming fall,
- 7:58Speaker 2: you are going to go on a brand new hunt,
- 8:00Speaker 2: brand new location. So this is some You're in hunt
- 8:02Speaker 2: of public land you've never been to before, in a
- 8:04Speaker 2: region you've never spent any time in before. You do
- 8:08Speaker 2: not get to go see this property or this area
- 8:10Speaker 2: at all before the hunt, so you're gonna have zero
- 8:12Speaker 2: physical experience heading into it. It will be a one
- 8:16Speaker 2: week hunt and it's going to be somewhere in the
- 8:18Speaker 2: Midwest Great Plains, Ish region, So going to be kind
- 8:21Speaker 2: of in your sweet spot, but a new spot within that.
- 8:25Speaker 2: What I would like to know this is going to
- 8:27Speaker 2: be an early season hunt. What will you do before
- 8:32Speaker 2: the hunt?
- 8:33Speaker 4: So?
- 8:33Speaker 2: What is what e scouting or map studying or prep
- 8:38Speaker 2: work do you have to have done before this hunt starts?
- 8:42Speaker 2: Tell me that for early season?
- 8:45Speaker 4: Sure?
- 8:45Speaker 3: Can I ask one question?
- 8:46Speaker 4: Is this based on public land or knock on door
- 8:49Speaker 4: and public or.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Oh well, you know what if you wanna if you
- 8:53Speaker 2: want to throw on some knock on door, that's that's
- 8:55Speaker 2: available to too, I'll say you're as you say, uncuffed.
- 8:58Speaker 2: You can do some private, you can do some public.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I'll let you go whichever way you want with.
- 9:03Speaker 4: That, okay. And the reason I ask is because the
- 9:05Speaker 4: first thing I'm going to do is get an idea
- 9:08Speaker 4: of if there's public in a particular area, that is
- 9:13Speaker 4: it like a state wide tag or am I pinned
- 9:15Speaker 4: down to like a general region of the state kind
- 9:17Speaker 4: of thing too?
- 9:20Speaker 3: You know?
- 9:20Speaker 4: I mean, I mean some some states operate like that.
- 9:23Speaker 4: So I'm going to pull up on X or whatever
- 9:27Speaker 4: map service that's going to show what's available for public land.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Get just a I'm not looking at aerials or anything.
- 9:34Speaker 4: At this point, just how much acres do I have
- 9:36Speaker 4: to work with? Is there a lot?
- 9:38Speaker 3: Is there?
- 9:40Speaker 4: Sometimes the better stuff is where there's not a lot,
- 9:42Speaker 4: you know, it's it's, oh, you've got one hundred and
- 9:44Speaker 4: sixty acres and the next piece of public is ten
- 9:46Speaker 4: or fifteen miles away, and that sometimes is a little
- 9:49Speaker 4: gem that people don't want to go out of the
- 9:51Speaker 4: way for. So I'm just kind of going to take
- 9:54Speaker 4: a brief and it's it's going to take probably five
- 9:57Speaker 4: minutes to just kind of scrub around the read. Okay,
- 10:01Speaker 4: there's a lot of public here. If it's early season
- 10:04Speaker 4: like that, I'm gonna then go in and just spend
- 10:07Speaker 4: just a little bit of time and I'm saying not much,
- 10:10Speaker 4: probably a half hour to an hour tops maybe on
- 10:13Speaker 4: my drive out even and just kind of like look
- 10:17Speaker 4: and see what the crops, you know, see see what
- 10:20Speaker 4: the ails look like for crops. Because it's early season,
- 10:22Speaker 4: so those deer are most likely going to be using crops,
- 10:26Speaker 4: and it doesn't necessarily need to be crops on public,
- 10:29Speaker 4: but at least adjacent to public that those deer may
- 10:31Speaker 4: be betting on the public and then using private crops
- 10:34Speaker 4: as well, so you know, some states have good amount
- 10:37Speaker 4: of crop on public lands, some don't, But that doesn't
- 10:40Speaker 4: mean that the deer aren't residing on public in early
- 10:43Speaker 4: season before they've been pressured and then using those private
- 10:46Speaker 4: land crops. So that's gonna kind of just narrow things
- 10:49Speaker 4: down of maybe my starting point from the vehicle when
- 10:53Speaker 4: I get to that area, then what I'm going to
- 10:56Speaker 4: do is I'm going to spend probably that first early
- 11:01Speaker 4: season gets to be long days, and depending on the
- 11:04Speaker 4: state in the area, it's not real productive in the
- 11:07Speaker 4: middle of the day to be driving around other than
- 11:09Speaker 4: if you're just trying to see what the terrain and
- 11:11Speaker 4: everything looks like. But even on trying to gauge if
- 11:15Speaker 4: there's other hunters, that's you know, I mean sometimes early
- 11:19Speaker 4: season like that, guys are all amped up and they're
- 11:23Speaker 4: set in tree stands in the middle of the day
- 11:24Speaker 4: and stuff. So sometimes I mean those drive rounds, but
- 11:27Speaker 4: we used to do a ton of that in North Dakota,
- 11:30Speaker 4: and a lot of times in the middle of the
- 11:31Speaker 4: day you just mentally go down a rabbit hole and
- 11:35Speaker 4: then you know, a couple hours before dark, it's like
- 11:37Speaker 4: that's your time to you know, at least. What we
- 11:40Speaker 4: normally do on those hunts in early season is we
- 11:43Speaker 4: hang back. We don't generally go in with a plan
- 11:46Speaker 4: of attack based on aerials out of the gate. We'll
- 11:49Speaker 4: hang back that first day or two and try to
- 11:53Speaker 4: cover ground and get visuals on those deer in the
- 11:57Speaker 4: morning and evening. You know, in some states and reagion
- 12:00Speaker 4: into those deer are going to be more active in
- 12:02Speaker 4: the morning, and depending on the you know, all the
- 12:04Speaker 4: other you know, moon stuff and stormfronts and things like that.
- 12:09Speaker 3: I mean, there's a lot of variables in there.
- 12:10Speaker 4: We don't need to go down, but sometimes, I mean
- 12:13Speaker 4: I was quite surprised when I first started going to
- 12:16Speaker 4: North Dakota back in early two thousands and how productive
- 12:22Speaker 4: it was to hunt them in the mornings. You know,
- 12:24Speaker 4: I wasn't used to that in Wisconsin. I mean, it
- 12:27Speaker 4: was it was more nighttime in Wisconsin in early season. Yeah,
- 12:31Speaker 4: I mean, your success rate was a lot higher, at
- 12:33Speaker 4: least in the early season in Wisconsin. So when I
- 12:36Speaker 4: got to North Dakota, it's like I'd see shooter bucks
- 12:39Speaker 4: still two hours after the sun came up, and I'm like,
- 12:43Speaker 4: WHOA cool. I was going out there thinking, you know,
- 12:47Speaker 4: and I've so it varies on the state, but I
- 12:49Speaker 4: mean essentially those first couple of days and it might
- 12:54Speaker 4: drift into three days, is going to be used to
- 12:57Speaker 4: really just eliminate acreage and fine, you're you know, in
- 13:02Speaker 4: those particular cases open country like that, trying to get
- 13:05Speaker 4: a visual on a big one or multiple by that point.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Usually on those early season hunts like that, usually there's
- 13:10Speaker 4: a few good bucks depending on the you know, every
- 13:14Speaker 4: hunt's different. Sometimes it goes that way, sometimes it doesn't.
- 13:16Speaker 4: But then that's when it's like, Okay, now we're going
- 13:20Speaker 4: to move in. We've eliminated a lot of wasted time
- 13:25Speaker 4: in pockets that maybe wouldn't be holding a big deer,
- 13:29Speaker 4: and and so now we're going to go in and
- 13:31Speaker 4: hunt more a specific deer or there could be a
- 13:34Speaker 4: couple of shooters right in there, but we're going to
- 13:37Speaker 4: start to move in more aggressively. At that point. We're
- 13:40Speaker 4: not going to go in there trumpson around in the
- 13:42Speaker 4: middle of the day and do any of that.
- 13:44Speaker 3: We're not going in.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Until it's like hunt time. They're not going to know
- 13:47Speaker 4: we're coming.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, let's let's rewind back to pre hunt. Still, Okay,
- 13:53Speaker 2: so same scenario, new new area, new hunt, everything, but
- 13:57Speaker 2: instead of early season, let's move up the eight to
- 14:00Speaker 2: like mid to late October. Does any of your pre
- 14:05Speaker 2: hunt planning changes, any of the scouting? Do you look
- 14:07Speaker 2: for anything different with maps? Do you look for anything
- 14:09Speaker 2: different or playing anything different? If the date is mid
- 14:14Speaker 2: to late October?
- 14:15Speaker 4: Are we still talking about like the plane states?
- 14:17Speaker 2: Yep, everything's the same.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Ye, not much changes.
- 14:21Speaker 4: I might not put as much focus on on the
- 14:25Speaker 4: UH food source. I may not put quite as much
- 14:28Speaker 4: emphasis on necessarily that, because by that point, quite often
- 14:33Speaker 4: there's some amounts of pressure that those deer have been getting,
- 14:37Speaker 4: whether it's pheasant seasons that opened up, or small game
- 14:41Speaker 4: or pre scouters or early season bowl hunters, and you
- 14:44Speaker 4: know that they start to get a lot of activity.
- 14:46Speaker 4: So those deer begin to travel longer distance. In those
- 14:50Speaker 4: plane states, it's not uncommon form to be vetting a
- 14:52Speaker 4: mile a mile and a half from where they're actually
- 14:55Speaker 4: maybe even two miles at times from where they're actually feeding.
- 15:00Speaker 4: And so I won't put quite as much emphasis. And
- 15:03Speaker 4: I may look for pockets that are further from from
- 15:06Speaker 4: any crop, but I don't put quite as much emphasis
- 15:10Speaker 4: they generally are from what I've found further.
- 15:14Speaker 3: From that crop source.
- 15:15Speaker 4: The later the season gets, you know, obviously on rutkicks
- 15:19Speaker 4: in a lot of things change.
- 15:20Speaker 2: But so then that's my last thing is okay, now,
- 15:23Speaker 2: what if I said this is going to be November,
- 15:25Speaker 2: do you look for anything different for planning the rut hunt.
- 15:29Speaker 4: I pretty much don't look at crop at all for
- 15:31Speaker 4: any any any of that because those plaine states.
- 15:36Speaker 3: You know that second year we did the Kansas planes,
- 15:41Speaker 3: and I mean they are where we were at in
- 15:44Speaker 3: that particular time. There is planes as you can get
- 15:48Speaker 3: pretty much almost And there was one big mature buck
- 15:53Speaker 3: during the rut and when I went back and edited
- 15:56Speaker 3: the footage, it turned out we had filmed that buck.
- 16:00Speaker 3: I think we filmed them on all these occasions, but
- 16:03Speaker 3: for surely seeing them as well in eleven different square
- 16:06Speaker 3: mile sections. So that told me the range of those deer,
- 16:11Speaker 3: how far they can you know they're they're And even
- 16:16Speaker 3: I've come to learn more on the wooded side too,
- 16:18Speaker 3: even in northern Wisconsin. It's you know, I've had multiple
- 16:22Speaker 3: guys that have a trail camp picture of the same
- 16:24Speaker 3: bucks six miles apart, five six miles apart in the
- 16:28Speaker 3: timber that you know. So you know, in those earlier
- 16:34Speaker 3: days of the plains, I just kind of assumed those
- 16:37Speaker 3: deer covered more ground than you're you're wooded.
- 16:43Speaker 4: You know you're you're wooded, but I don't know as
- 16:46Speaker 4: they necessarily do. I shot a buck back in five
- 16:50Speaker 4: that turned out a guy had been chasing and that
- 16:54Speaker 4: was pretty wooded stuff, pretty wooded terrain stuff in Wisconsin.
- 17:00Speaker 4: I killed the buck and a guy was chasing him
- 17:03Speaker 4: about five six miles away, and that's where the buck
- 17:06Speaker 4: actually normally lived and it was late season when I
- 17:09Speaker 4: killed them.
- 17:10Speaker 3: So you know, I'm getting sidetracked a little bit.
- 17:16Speaker 4: But in those plain states when it comes to the rut,
- 17:18Speaker 4: I'm not looking at crop.
- 17:20Speaker 2: So on the maps, is there anything that you mentioned
- 17:23Speaker 2: you'd look for a little bit more isolated cover for
- 17:26Speaker 2: that October hunt? Does anything like that register on the maps?
- 17:30Speaker 2: When you're thinking, Okay, I'm gonna go this area. I
- 17:32Speaker 2: know I'm gonna drive around a lot in Glass do
- 17:36Speaker 2: you try to come into that trip with a list
- 17:38Speaker 2: of here's like ten properties I know or ten areas
- 17:41Speaker 2: I know I want to hit, and here's like a
- 17:43Speaker 2: bunch of spots that happen to have the pockets to cover.
- 17:45Speaker 2: I want to do not worry about that at all,
- 17:47Speaker 2: because you're just gonna cover ground and figure it out
- 17:49Speaker 2: in the fly.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Yeah. I don't like to get too pre invested on
- 17:52Speaker 4: what I see on areos. I just don't because I
- 17:55Speaker 4: get there and then it's like you got hunting pressure,
- 17:59Speaker 4: you aren't ape and that totally changes everything because no
- 18:02Speaker 4: matter how good it looks on the aerial, if there's
- 18:04Speaker 4: pressure there, you know, you know, most of the time
- 18:10Speaker 4: a mature buck is not going to be there. You know,
- 18:13Speaker 4: there are occasions where where that happens. You know, for instance,
- 18:21Speaker 4: I'll give a couple examples. One one instance would be,
- 18:24Speaker 4: you know, a buck that's been heavily spending his time
- 18:28Speaker 4: and living his time three miles away on private not
- 18:30Speaker 4: getting pressured, that has no idea that this public skin
- 18:33Speaker 4: been getting pressured the last month and a half. May
- 18:36Speaker 4: come stroll him through there, find a hot dough or
- 18:39Speaker 4: push a hot dough into there, and he's in the
- 18:42Speaker 4: midst of a piece that's been pressured all year but
- 18:45Speaker 4: doesn't know it. So there are flukes like that that
- 18:50Speaker 4: that come up. Another example of that that crossed my mind. God,
- 18:59Speaker 4: I lost my point, so we should probably keep rolling.
- 19:01Speaker 4: But it was there was another example I had, so.
- 19:04Speaker 2: I believe you.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Oh oh yeah, yeah.
- 19:05Speaker 4: We're talking about the plane states where those deer they
- 19:10Speaker 4: can cover some ground, they can get away from from
- 19:13Speaker 4: pressure pockets. You know, you get into those higher pressured states,
- 19:16Speaker 4: like you're in Michigan. Now, I haven't hunted Michigan, but
- 19:18Speaker 4: I've gathered enough intel over the years to understand that
- 19:21Speaker 4: it's a highly pressured state. You know, I came from Wisconsin.
- 19:24Speaker 4: It's a very very pressured state. Probably not quite as
- 19:28Speaker 4: pressured overall as Michigan. But now those deer can are there,
- 19:31Speaker 4: but they're used to getting bumped around all the time,
- 19:33Speaker 4: and they're finding little tiny pockets to a lot of
- 19:36Speaker 4: times to live in, and so they might I think
- 19:39Speaker 4: they got a higher higher tolerance those deer do for pressure.
- 19:42Speaker 4: They're willing to handle, you know more and and jivjive
- 19:46Speaker 4: and and and whatnot. Whereas you get into those areas
- 19:49Speaker 4: where they have a lot of ground that isn't pressured,
- 19:52Speaker 4: they don't tolerat it as much. They just get the
- 19:54Speaker 4: hell out of there.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, true. You mentioned at the beginning with that
- 20:13Speaker 2: early season hunt. That day one, you would be cruising
- 20:16Speaker 2: the back roads, right, You'd be cruising looking for where
- 20:19Speaker 2: there's other pressure, looking for a deer, trying to find
- 20:22Speaker 2: a couple of shooters, start crossing spots off the map,
- 20:24Speaker 2: trying to figure out where you're gonna focus. So that
- 20:27Speaker 2: would be your early season day one. Would your day
- 20:31Speaker 2: one be any different if it was? Or I'm sure
- 20:34Speaker 2: it is, But how is your early Let me rephrase this,
- 20:37Speaker 2: how is your day one different? If we're on the
- 20:40Speaker 2: new property not new property, new area. It's November. It's
- 20:45Speaker 2: very cold, but it's very still. So imagine this is
- 20:49Speaker 2: day one of your trip. We're somewhere in the planes
- 20:52Speaker 2: or Midwest. It's November, twenty four degrees zero wind. What
- 20:58Speaker 2: does the first day of this hunt like for you
- 21:00Speaker 2: in that set of circumstances.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Uh, not terribly much different generally speaking, first day, new area.
- 21:12Speaker 4: I'm still gonna I'm still gonna do pretty much that
- 21:16Speaker 4: I'm gonna.
- 21:17Speaker 3: I'm gonna hang back and just kind of see what's
- 21:19Speaker 3: going on.
- 21:20Speaker 4: And and sometimes there's still days like that during the rut,
- 21:25Speaker 4: it's like you can gather a lot of information and
- 21:28Speaker 4: you know it's a great time to catch a big,
- 21:30Speaker 4: big buck hung up with a dough on, you know,
- 21:33Speaker 4: and and then you know you might she might be
- 21:36Speaker 4: just coming into heat and you got three days to
- 21:38Speaker 4: play with them, and you know, unless something like pressure
- 21:42Speaker 4: moves in on that specific dear, a lot of times
- 21:44Speaker 4: they're not gonna be that far away once they get that.
- 21:49Speaker 3: You know, it depends.
- 21:50Speaker 4: It's in the great planes where it's really wide open
- 21:55Speaker 4: and there's not as much cover and pocket those deer
- 22:01Speaker 4: can end up a long ways away from one day
- 22:05Speaker 4: to the next, even when that dough is hot. But
- 22:08Speaker 4: now you get into some of the more Midwest stuff,
- 22:12Speaker 4: you know, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin. And I shouldn't speak for Illinois.
- 22:17Speaker 4: I don't have experience there, but the terrain is not
- 22:20Speaker 4: much too terribly different than some of you know the
- 22:23Speaker 4: Iowa Wisconsin.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Now, if there's enough cover and whatnot. There what we.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Found is those deer, once a big buckets locked on
- 22:32Speaker 4: a dough a lot of times, if he's a real
- 22:34Speaker 4: mature buck, he can just drive off all the satellite
- 22:37Speaker 4: bucks and that dough is pretty content being with them,
- 22:40Speaker 4: and usually in less pressure comes in and disrupts it.
- 22:46Speaker 3: And if she's just coming in.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Usually they don't end up too far away over that
- 22:50Speaker 4: two three day period. Now in the planes with a
- 22:53Speaker 4: wide open planes, like I said, totally different story. I mean,
- 22:57Speaker 4: satellite buck could come in and you can watch him
- 22:59Speaker 4: run for a mile mile and a half. So yeah, So.
- 23:05Speaker 2: What about that first situation. I want to dip in
- 23:08Speaker 2: that a little bit further. Let's say we're in the midwest,
- 23:10Speaker 2: Iowa or Wisconsin or something like that, and let's say
- 23:14Speaker 2: you had your day one drive about and you spotted
- 23:18Speaker 2: a mature buck locked on a dough. It's a super still,
- 23:23Speaker 2: quiet day, and for whatever reason, I guess I have
- 23:27Speaker 2: two parts. Number one, if it's a super still day
- 23:31Speaker 2: like that and you spot them and it's getting towards
- 23:33Speaker 2: the end of the evening, would you try to make
- 23:34Speaker 2: a move on something or would you say, well, I'll
- 23:37Speaker 2: wait till tomorrow because there's a little bit more wind
- 23:40Speaker 2: and slightly better conditioned. So that's question number one. And
- 23:43Speaker 2: then question number two is if you lose sight of
- 23:46Speaker 2: that deer at dark, what does the next morning look like? Again,
- 23:49Speaker 2: it's Midwest, mixed cover and lightish wins the next morning,
- 23:55Speaker 2: So Part one, Part two questions.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Okay, I'm going to answer the part two question first,
- 24:01Speaker 4: just so it's in because part two is if it
- 24:07Speaker 4: comes to dark, and I mean the next morning, we're
- 24:11Speaker 4: gonna be hunkered pretty close, probably not on foot, depending
- 24:16Speaker 4: on the situation, Probably not on foot, probably in the vehicle.
- 24:21Speaker 4: It doesn't mean that we might not hike a couple
- 24:24Speaker 4: hundred yards to a high point where we can really
- 24:27Speaker 4: you know, and maybe it's five hundred yards to a
- 24:29Speaker 4: high point, but we're gonna be things could have changed overnight.
- 24:33Speaker 4: You know, they'll probably be in the vicinity, but it's
- 24:35Speaker 4: probably gonna be I shouldn't say probably. There's a decent
- 24:40Speaker 4: chance they'll be somewhere in that four or five six
- 24:43Speaker 4: hundred yards. They could be right right there, you know. So, uh,
- 24:49Speaker 4: that's what we're going to do in that particular case,
- 24:52Speaker 4: rolling back to point one, very still, calm conditions, not
- 24:56Speaker 4: a lot of time left in the day to make
- 24:58Speaker 4: it happen. That's gonna be situations, situationally based.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Because there's.
- 25:09Speaker 4: When you got a big buck that's on a hot
- 25:11Speaker 4: dough like that, and Chancey is phenomenal at this being
- 25:16Speaker 4: able to recognize that those just coming into heat or
- 25:22Speaker 4: she's probably on day three of heat and she's probably
- 25:25Speaker 4: gonna be out by tomorrow morning.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Explain that that it's.
- 25:33Speaker 3: It's really hard to explain. He would be better at that.
- 25:36Speaker 4: But I've watched him, whether I'm with him or editing
- 25:40Speaker 4: the footage, I've watched him pick up on things and
- 25:45Speaker 4: he doesn't necessarily always just explain it, but he's usually
- 25:51Speaker 4: very accurate on that. And so, I mean, a few
- 25:54Speaker 4: years back, he had a big one that he found,
- 25:57Speaker 4: I think that was day one. He found it and
- 26:00Speaker 4: it was hung up with a dough, and he read
- 26:02Speaker 4: it right out of the gate, and he it was
- 26:04Speaker 4: pretty fairly calmed conditions, and he he probably would have
- 26:11Speaker 4: gotten more aggressive, but he read it right that that
- 26:13Speaker 4: dough was just coming into heat, so he knew, Okay,
- 26:17Speaker 4: that's a mature enough buck. He's not going to be
- 26:20Speaker 4: too intimidated by satellite bucks and everything's going to get
- 26:23Speaker 4: disrupted and he's going to end up a mile away.
- 26:26Speaker 4: He's probably going to be pretty close the next day,
- 26:28Speaker 4: so I'm not going to get too aggressive. And he
- 26:32Speaker 4: he did it right. I mean that this game of
- 26:34Speaker 4: on the ground, it's a constant passive aggressive, you know,
- 26:39Speaker 4: and over the years you get it more and more honed,
- 26:41Speaker 4: and there's a lot that goes into it.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Now, if it appears.
- 26:47Speaker 4: Let's say you got a three year old buck and
- 26:50Speaker 4: let's say four and five year old bucks in this
- 26:52Speaker 4: area are somewhat common, and you're already dealing with some
- 26:56Speaker 4: satellite bucks that are poking around, and he's real aggressive
- 26:59Speaker 4: and real you know, you can just read the book
- 27:03Speaker 4: and he almost kind of feels maybe a little bit threatened,
- 27:07Speaker 4: like he's not the dominant necessarily. Maybe it is a
- 27:11Speaker 4: good time to move in and just try to make
- 27:14Speaker 4: it happen, because that's an indicator right there that a
- 27:18Speaker 4: lot's probably going to change overnight.
- 27:21Speaker 3: And either.
- 27:25Speaker 4: And if you're playing the public land game, there's always
- 27:28Speaker 4: that risk too of are they even going to be
- 27:31Speaker 4: on public the next day? You know, So there's a
- 27:34Speaker 4: lot of factors in there that you know, I will
- 27:42Speaker 4: say this though, sometimes we've taken chances with like, yeah,
- 27:47Speaker 4: we got like a five percent chance this is gonna
- 27:50Speaker 4: actually work, but we just kind of feel like there's
- 27:55Speaker 4: no point in not trying because they're probably going to
- 27:58Speaker 4: be on private the next day or whatever, and we've
- 28:02Speaker 4: pulled it off or we've been so narrowly close, and
- 28:04Speaker 4: it was just a slight little mistake on our end.
- 28:06Speaker 3: In similar conditions to what you described, where there's like no.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Win and it's like this is gonna be next to impossible,
- 28:15Speaker 4: and then it's like, damn, we got that one, or
- 28:18Speaker 4: we almost got that one. We were so close. And
- 28:21Speaker 4: then there's been plenty of times where it's like, okay,
- 28:25Speaker 4: you almost count your chickens before they hatch, like this
- 28:27Speaker 4: should be a slam dunk, and then we get slapped
- 28:31Speaker 4: in the face.
- 28:32Speaker 2: So so what about this one? What about let's just
- 28:37Speaker 2: paint this picture a little bit further. Let's say you
- 28:40Speaker 2: had those conditions the night of you observe the buck
- 28:43Speaker 2: with a dough, but for whatever reason, decide that you're
- 28:47Speaker 2: not going to press the matter. You observe them for
- 28:49Speaker 2: the last half hour of daylight. You watch them kind
- 28:52Speaker 2: of just milling around this tall brushy stuff. Okay, there's
- 28:55Speaker 2: like there's basically crp type fields, and then a few
- 29:00Speaker 2: brush your draws in the area. You come back in
- 29:03Speaker 2: the next morning. You said you would probably observe from
- 29:06Speaker 2: a truck. Let's say you're on the side of a road,
- 29:08Speaker 2: your glass and your glass and sure enough, you spot
- 29:11Speaker 2: them five hundred yards away, and you spot them move
- 29:16Speaker 2: down towards one of these draws and bed, you spot
- 29:20Speaker 2: the two deer bedded. It's an hour after daylight, now
- 29:25Speaker 2: dead still. You're five hundred and fifty yards away. It's
- 29:29Speaker 2: November seventh, it's public land. And you've seen three other
- 29:34Speaker 2: cars drive by on the road that have hunters in them.
- 29:38Speaker 2: You haven't seen them stop. You haven't seen them get
- 29:40Speaker 2: out to hunt this area. But you know, like, hey,
- 29:42Speaker 2: there's pressure around. There's a big buck betted with a
- 29:46Speaker 2: doll five hundred and fifty yards away. You watched them bed.
- 29:50Speaker 2: It's crisp, it's still. Now what do you do? And
- 29:56Speaker 2: I'll tell you the wind is subpar, Like the wind
- 30:01Speaker 2: is kind of blowing ish towards them, like kind not
- 30:04Speaker 2: straight at them from you. But you don't have the
- 30:06Speaker 2: wind in your face.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Okay, all right, So the first thing I am gonna
- 30:10Speaker 4: do is today we have the app, so tell us
- 30:14Speaker 4: what the wind's gonna do throughout the day. And it's
- 30:15Speaker 4: not always one hundred percent accurate. And then you got
- 30:18Speaker 4: trains in there and stuff, but I'm at least gonna
- 30:20Speaker 4: get an idea. Am I gonna get a fifteen to
- 30:22Speaker 4: twenty mile an hour wind here in a few hours,
- 30:24Speaker 4: is that win gonna switch? And I'm gonna take a
- 30:27Speaker 4: look at all that, And that's only gonna take a
- 30:30Speaker 4: couple of minutes to boom boom boom boom boom. Okay,
- 30:33Speaker 4: all right, that's what we got to work with over
- 30:35Speaker 4: the course of the day. And then you brought up
- 30:39Speaker 4: the other hunters. Okay, so I'm assuming this buck is
- 30:43Speaker 4: hunkered down. Okay, good, the hunters can't see them, you know. Okay,
- 30:48Speaker 4: all right, we got them all messled in, so that's good.
- 30:54Speaker 3: But being a buck with it hot though, all it's
- 30:59Speaker 3: gonna take.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Is a satellite buck, cruising buck to come in there
- 31:04Speaker 4: and stir things up and they get on their feet
- 31:06Speaker 4: and the hunter just happens to drive by and sees that.
- 31:09Speaker 4: So it's it's kind of a risky deal to lay
- 31:13Speaker 4: back too. So in this particular case, from what I you,
- 31:20Speaker 4: without being in the exact situation, I'm probably going to
- 31:24Speaker 4: try to get boots on the ground at least to
- 31:27Speaker 4: get a little bit of a footing down right out
- 31:29Speaker 4: of the you know, to get an edge on other hunters. Potentially.
- 31:34Speaker 4: First thing I'm going to do if I'm doing that,
- 31:37Speaker 4: is I'm going to get the vehicle parked in a
- 31:39Speaker 4: way that doesn't appear that something's going on. Like you know,
- 31:45Speaker 4: if I park the vehicle right along the road and
- 31:47Speaker 4: there's a parking lot three hundred yards up the road,
- 31:50Speaker 4: it sends like a message any hunter driving by, like, Oh,
- 31:53Speaker 4: something's going on around here. And then all of a
- 31:56Speaker 4: sudden people are slow rolling through there, doingmultiple passes, maybe
- 32:01Speaker 4: parking and stopping, and and that could totally disrupt them
- 32:05Speaker 4: when they're vetted, just by the sound of the vehicle
- 32:09Speaker 4: or just by visual maybe that the deer can see
- 32:13Speaker 4: the vehicle and then it stops and it makes them
- 32:15Speaker 4: all fidgety.
- 32:15Speaker 3: So I'm going to get that vehicle.
- 32:18Speaker 4: Away from the situation a bit and parked in a
- 32:23Speaker 4: way that you're playing defense a lot of times here,
- 32:26Speaker 4: you know, because you're trying to buy some time, you know,
- 32:30Speaker 4: you know, And I mean when I say playing defense,
- 32:33Speaker 4: I mean that in all good, good, good fair competition fun.
- 32:38Speaker 4: You know. It's not like you don't want other people
- 32:41Speaker 4: to have a good hunt too, but you're in the
- 32:42Speaker 4: battle with a big buck, you know. Yeah, And and
- 32:48Speaker 4: then yeah, I mean being a very call what sounds
- 32:51Speaker 4: like a calm day at least starting out, I'm just
- 32:55Speaker 4: going to gradually, just ever so slowly work my way
- 32:59Speaker 4: in there. Now, when I say gradually and slowly, if
- 33:03Speaker 4: there's no risk from sight or sound or smell, I'm
- 33:07Speaker 4: going to cover ground very quickly because I'm not going
- 33:11Speaker 4: to have a visual and anything could happen at Bumpslow's
- 33:13Speaker 4: deer and the last thing, and I've been in this
- 33:15Speaker 4: situation before where to make your entrance you have to
- 33:20Speaker 4: lose your vantage point where you would maintain your visual,
- 33:25Speaker 4: and you want to cut when you're doing that. You
- 33:29Speaker 4: want to get through that whatever, whatever that is. You
- 33:34Speaker 4: want to cover ground as fast as you can to
- 33:37Speaker 4: get at least your vantage.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Back, because we've done that before.
- 33:42Speaker 4: And then spend hours slow creeping in there to find
- 33:45Speaker 4: that they exited the whole situation while we were doing
- 33:50Speaker 4: the ten minute you know pass where we lost our
- 33:56Speaker 4: where we had to lose our vantage point, and then
- 33:59Speaker 4: we crawl in there and it's like where did they go?
- 34:02Speaker 4: Where did they go? Where did they go?
- 34:04Speaker 3: They're not here?
- 34:05Speaker 4: Oh no, so so and and two when we're talking
- 34:11Speaker 4: about you mentioned like you're in your vehicle, I want
- 34:16Speaker 4: to The reason so often we don't like to leave
- 34:20Speaker 4: that vehicle in these situations until we're actually going in
- 34:25Speaker 4: is because the vehicle allows us to cover a lot
- 34:28Speaker 4: of ground. It's it's it's a lot of times a
- 34:31Speaker 4: vehicle gets referenced as a vehicle, it is in this
- 34:34Speaker 4: case a vehicle that allows us to get to the
- 34:36Speaker 4: next vantage point in case something you know, I mean,
- 34:40Speaker 4: something happens and they take off running. That happens a
- 34:43Speaker 4: lot of times, and you maybe need to get to
- 34:45Speaker 4: the next vantage point. So and and like I said,
- 34:49Speaker 4: sometimes the vantage point is a hike in a little
- 34:52Speaker 4: bit from the vehicle, and sometimes it's a long ways
- 34:55Speaker 4: in from the vehicle.
- 34:56Speaker 2: But you're.
- 34:59Speaker 4: When you're lead even that vehicle and you're you're not
- 35:04Speaker 4: ready to move in for the stock, you're at high
- 35:08Speaker 4: risk of if they decide something happens that triggers them
- 35:13Speaker 4: to cover ground and you're a ways away from the vehicle,
- 35:18Speaker 4: you're at high risk of losing it for the rest
- 35:22Speaker 4: of the day, losing your opportunity because they might take
- 35:27Speaker 4: off running over a hill or whatever that you can't
- 35:32Speaker 4: maintain your visual, You have no idea what happened where
- 35:34Speaker 4: they went after that, and by the time you get
- 35:37Speaker 4: to the vehicle and get to the next fountain, they
- 35:39Speaker 4: might already be vetted down in a pocket. You don't
- 35:41Speaker 4: know if they're half a mile this way or half
- 35:43Speaker 4: mile that way, or or whatnot. So that's why a
- 35:48Speaker 4: lot of times we like to, you know, during that
- 35:51Speaker 4: time of the year, we like to keep fairly close
- 35:53Speaker 4: to the vehicle in case we need to relocate to
- 35:56Speaker 4: another vantage point pretty quickly.
- 35:58Speaker 2: You know, so makes sense. So you stayed by the
- 36:02Speaker 2: vehicle for as long as possible, But now you're going
- 36:05Speaker 2: to make the move. You said you'd cover distance as
- 36:08Speaker 2: fast as you could, as long as there's no risk
- 36:10Speaker 2: of sight, sound, or smell interfering. So let's say you
- 36:14Speaker 2: did that. So we went from five hundred and fifty
- 36:16Speaker 2: yards to Let's now say you were able to cut
- 36:19Speaker 2: it to two hundred and fifty. But at two hundred
- 36:21Speaker 2: and fifty yards you come out of like you lose
- 36:23Speaker 2: your little hill, and now it's there's a risk of
- 36:26Speaker 2: being seen. Now from two hundred and fifty yards and
- 36:29Speaker 2: end it's still the wind is still low, it's still dry.
- 36:35Speaker 4: What Now, that's where you start putting on the brakes
- 36:39Speaker 4: a lot of times and moving very very slow. You
- 36:43Speaker 4: got good thing here is you got all day. You
- 36:46Speaker 4: got a lot of hours in the day. So there's
- 36:48Speaker 4: and you got your advantage. So you can see if
- 36:51Speaker 4: they if something happens and they decide they're going to
- 36:54Speaker 4: relocate or whatever.
- 36:58Speaker 3: So you're not in the dark.
- 37:00Speaker 4: I guess you're not slow creeping in the dark where
- 37:03Speaker 4: they could take an exit route, not an exit route
- 37:07Speaker 4: necessarily because they know about you.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Just for whatever reason, they get flighty.
- 37:11Speaker 4: A vehicle comes up the road, a satellite buck comes in,
- 37:14Speaker 4: whatever the case might be. You've got your vantage to
- 37:19Speaker 4: that point to observe that you got all day. Now
- 37:23Speaker 4: it's time to most of the time. It's going to
- 37:25Speaker 4: be time to put the brakes on. And all that
- 37:29Speaker 4: hustling you did through that point that you bought a
- 37:31Speaker 4: little time too in there, and so now it's time
- 37:34Speaker 4: to You were a rabbit before, now it's time to
- 37:36Speaker 4: be a turtle.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Yeah, so you're slow rolling. Now, let me introduce a
- 37:46Speaker 2: red flag. Maybe at two hundred fifty yards. You're sneaking
- 37:50Speaker 2: a long, nice and quiet, you're the tortoise right now,
- 37:53Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden that buck stands up
- 37:56Speaker 2: and looks right at you and staring at you, and
- 38:01Speaker 2: I guess I'm assuming you have your handheld decoy with you.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Do you have your decoy with you.
- 38:06Speaker 4: This most of the time, I'm not going to have
- 38:08Speaker 4: that popped out yet, you're not if I if I
- 38:10Speaker 4: have it, no, but you.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Would possibly take it with you on this type of stock,
- 38:14Speaker 2: So it's probably with you.
- 38:16Speaker 4: Maybe it probably would be, but it's probably not pulled
- 38:20Speaker 4: out yet. If I'm two hundred or two hundred and
- 38:22Speaker 4: fifty yards away.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Okay, so then let's let's say this. Then, so he
- 38:26Speaker 2: stands up, You're two hundred and fifty yards away, and
- 38:28Speaker 2: he locks right on you, and you you have no
- 38:31Speaker 2: reason to think he smells you, but somehow he pegged you.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Now what, Freeze for a long time, don't move for
- 38:40Speaker 4: a long long time, and you're far enough away if
- 38:44Speaker 4: he's not. If he's not, the general rule I've come
- 38:47Speaker 4: to find is if they aren't exiting, they just saw something.
- 38:52Speaker 4: They haven't confirmed that you're a human or your threat
- 38:55Speaker 4: or anything yet. So since he's got a hot dough there,
- 38:59Speaker 4: if you just freeze and don't move, you'll probably be fine.
- 39:04Speaker 4: He'll he'll get preoccupied and sidetracked after a little while,
- 39:09Speaker 4: and he might kind of pop back in, you know,
- 39:12Speaker 4: and check on it a couple of times. Usually if
- 39:16Speaker 4: he's gonna do that, it's it's not gonna be a
- 39:18Speaker 4: long time. Like he'll get sidetracked at the dough for
- 39:21Speaker 4: a minute and then he might come back to you,
- 39:23Speaker 4: but it's usually not a half hour later or something.
- 39:26Speaker 3: He's you know, moved on.
- 39:31Speaker 4: And so usually if if they're pretty certain, if I
- 39:35Speaker 4: sense it, they're pretty certain something doesn't look right to him,
- 39:38Speaker 4: I pretty much expect the more attention they're given me
- 39:43Speaker 4: in that one first instant stance, like they stand there
- 39:46Speaker 4: for a few minutes, they're pretty convinced something's not right.
- 39:50Speaker 4: So that tells me that they're gonna come back to me,
- 39:54Speaker 4: Like they're gonna get sidetracked here in a minute with something,
- 39:57Speaker 4: but they've locked onto this situation enough to where they're
- 40:01Speaker 4: going to come back to it in a minute or
- 40:05Speaker 4: ten seconds or you know, I mean, it could be
- 40:07Speaker 4: just the normal trick of you know, you see this
- 40:10Speaker 4: a lot in early season, is you know they're trying
- 40:14Speaker 4: to you know, they're i mean all kinds of predatory
- 40:20Speaker 4: game does this to them. So that's how they got
- 40:22Speaker 4: so honed over, you know, thousands of years is is?
- 40:28Speaker 4: I mean, okay, if I look away, they know I'm
- 40:31Speaker 4: looking away, and that's when they're going to be moving up.
- 40:33Speaker 4: Did I get you? You know? Okay? So and eventually
- 40:39Speaker 4: they they if they start doing that and I and
- 40:42Speaker 4: I'm not moving, I've already beat them. It's just a
- 40:45Speaker 4: matter of I've already tricked them. They just don't know
- 40:50Speaker 4: it yet. But I got to be patient and just
- 40:55Speaker 4: not move. And eventually, nine times out of ten and
- 41:00Speaker 4: they eventually forget about it.
- 41:01Speaker 3: And except that it's nothing.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Okay, I'm gonna keep on playing this out. So that
- 41:09Speaker 2: happens at two hundred fifty yards. He stands up, he
- 41:11Speaker 2: stares you down. You freeze. Fifteen minutes go by. He
- 41:16Speaker 2: does the head bob at the end, but you don't blink,
- 41:19Speaker 2: you don't breathe, you don't move a muscle, nothing goes wrong,
- 41:23Speaker 2: the wind doesn't swirl. Eventually he gets back, puts his
- 41:27Speaker 2: attention on the dough. They re bet you now continue
- 41:31Speaker 2: your slow creep. It's now noon, and over the next
- 41:35Speaker 2: three hours you close the distance from two hundred and
- 41:39Speaker 2: fifty yards to eighty yards. But at eighty yards, because
- 41:45Speaker 2: of the lay of the land, there really is like
- 41:48Speaker 2: no way you can stay out of sight. I mean
- 41:51Speaker 2: even if you were like on all fours, if you
- 41:54Speaker 2: were to kind of you're kind of coming down a
- 41:55Speaker 2: hill now towards him and her, and they're bedded facing you.
- 41:59Speaker 2: So at this point you see no way you could
- 42:01Speaker 2: possibly get any closer without them seeing you. Now at
- 42:05Speaker 2: eighty yards, it's three o'clock in the afternoon. You're eighty
- 42:09Speaker 2: yards away from the buck bedded with the dough facing
- 42:12Speaker 2: you in you know, anywhere from like shin to just
- 42:19Speaker 2: above knee high grass. Now, okay, you have your handheld
- 42:25Speaker 2: decoy with you, you have a cameraman with you, you
- 42:27Speaker 2: have a bow with you. Still not a lot of
- 42:31Speaker 2: wind we now have, you know, two and a half
- 42:35Speaker 2: hours of daylight left something like that. What do you
- 42:39Speaker 2: do over the next two and a half hours.
- 42:42Speaker 4: That is a tough scenario. The first thing I would
- 42:48Speaker 4: potentially consider is I have this thing that sometimes I
- 42:56Speaker 4: will try stuff that is it's nearly impossible. I don't
- 43:04Speaker 4: know if it's just to see if it would work
- 43:06Speaker 4: or or what, but I I would evaluate could I
- 43:12Speaker 4: slither on my belly, not on all fours, but just
- 43:15Speaker 4: literally on my belly. Could I slope slither down this
- 43:19Speaker 4: hill ever so slowly and I'm in plain sight, but
- 43:21Speaker 4: I'm moving slow enough and I'm low enough. Could I
- 43:25Speaker 4: pull that off? And could I do it quiet enough
- 43:27Speaker 4: to where I didn't alarm them by sound without a
- 43:35Speaker 4: lot of wind though? You know, compound guys, you're a
- 43:39Speaker 4: lot safer because you got the range. So one thing
- 43:49Speaker 4: I've learned over the years is you know, I like
- 43:51Speaker 4: to get inside of twenty on them with a long bow. Well,
- 43:57Speaker 4: you get inside of twenty and you don't have a
- 43:58Speaker 4: lot of time. Yeah, And the tree stand guys know this.
- 44:03Speaker 4: When they get a big, mature old buck coming in,
- 44:06Speaker 4: when they start to break twenty yards coming in to
- 44:08Speaker 4: their tree stands set, they know a lot can that
- 44:11Speaker 4: buck can detect them through various methods and ways very quickly,
- 44:17Speaker 4: and oftentimes they do. So you're going to break that
- 44:22Speaker 4: threshold of twenty sneaking in on them, and then you're
- 44:25Speaker 4: going to hang out there for an hour.
- 44:30Speaker 3: To wait for an opportunity. That's very difficult to.
- 44:33Speaker 4: Do, especially when you don't have a lot of win
- 44:36Speaker 4: because then that wind just sits there and turns and
- 44:38Speaker 4: spins and you don't know what it's going to do,
- 44:40Speaker 4: and you can't. You can have the most optimal win,
- 44:44Speaker 4: but if there's not much of it, you really don't.
- 44:51Speaker 4: So I mean, I had a big, big, mature nine
- 44:55Speaker 4: pointer last year and it would have been a perfect
- 44:57Speaker 4: situation for a compoundent and we had five I think
- 45:00Speaker 4: five mile an hour winds. It wasn't much. I looked
- 45:02Speaker 4: at them, I'm like, it ain't picking up today, and
- 45:06Speaker 4: it was I think it was late morning we went
- 45:10Speaker 4: into this was in the timber, and I had a
- 45:13Speaker 4: beautiful fifty yard shot with a compound, but we had
- 45:19Speaker 4: what would be the perfect wind, but with it that looks.
- 45:23Speaker 3: You know, that soft.
- 45:26Speaker 4: I was talking about it for fifteen twenty minutes. We
- 45:31Speaker 4: were kind of peeking, moving around this cedar tree on them,
- 45:33Speaker 4: and I was like, I just there's no way, there's
- 45:37Speaker 4: no way I can get inside of twenty do it
- 45:40Speaker 4: in the I'd have to do it slow, and there's
- 45:43Speaker 4: no way there's gonna be a wind current or whatever.
- 45:46Speaker 4: And I kind of was reading it and I was like,
- 45:48Speaker 4: this dough has got she's just coming in there's no
- 45:52Speaker 4: pressure today disrupting this. It's it's during the week, so
- 45:58Speaker 4: that's good for pressure reason. And I was like, we
- 46:02Speaker 4: should back out of here and just bank on bank
- 46:05Speaker 4: on him him driving her back in here tomorrow morning.
- 46:09Speaker 3: We were.
- 46:11Speaker 4: Literally exiting backwards, very slowly, just a few yards, that's
- 46:16Speaker 4: all the further we made it, and one of the
- 46:19Speaker 4: wind currents from our location made it made it there
- 46:22Speaker 4: and we had the primary win. I mean, I'm not
- 46:25Speaker 4: going off the weather app I'm going we had the
- 46:27Speaker 4: primary win where we were at.
- 46:29Speaker 3: But you know, I he hot around too much.
- 46:33Speaker 4: My gut was telling me I need to back out
- 46:35Speaker 4: and and bank on them being there tomorrow. And I
- 46:39Speaker 4: I wanted to move in, and I burnt a little
- 46:44Speaker 4: too much time and it cost me. And I wasn't
- 46:47Speaker 4: quite expecting that at fifty yards for that to happen.
- 46:51Speaker 4: But I got sidetracked on that situation a little bit.
- 46:54Speaker 2: But so yeah, so at eighty yards, Yeah, if you
- 47:01Speaker 2: didn't do the slide in there on your belly thing,
- 47:05Speaker 2: would you try to bring him to you at all?
- 47:07Speaker 2: Would you try to call any kind of way or
- 47:09Speaker 2: flip up the decoy or anything, or just wait until
- 47:12Speaker 2: dark and hope he moves your way. What then, So.
- 47:15Speaker 4: With that decoy, one of the things we've done over
- 47:20Speaker 4: the years is if a buck's locked on a dough
- 47:24Speaker 4: and we've had a little time to observe them and
- 47:26Speaker 4: their satellite bucks, we'll get a pretty good idea on
- 47:29Speaker 4: how close we'd have to get to break the comfort
- 47:33Speaker 4: zone to where he comes comes in, you know, and
- 47:36Speaker 4: every buck's different.
- 47:37Speaker 3: He might.
- 47:39Speaker 4: He might just stand there and stare at these satellite
- 47:42Speaker 4: bucks and not take more than a few steps away
- 47:45Speaker 4: from him.
- 47:46Speaker 3: Still, he might come eighty yards.
- 47:49Speaker 4: So if we sense he's an aggressive buck, we probably
- 47:53Speaker 4: in that particular case, would whip.
- 47:55Speaker 3: It out on an eighty Now, we got.
- 47:58Speaker 4: Some footage in the works, not so much on the
- 48:01Speaker 4: next film, but the one that follows, where Tanner he
- 48:06Speaker 4: moved in three hundred yards with the decoy in plain sight.
- 48:10Speaker 4: He did it very slow.
- 48:12Speaker 3: And that buck, I don't think that buck came from
- 48:16Speaker 3: my understanding.
- 48:17Speaker 4: He was a big mature. I don't know. He looks
- 48:19Speaker 4: like he's fifty to sixty field dress big. He wasn't
- 48:24Speaker 4: budget from his dough, and a lot of times those big,
- 48:26Speaker 4: big old mature I got this, like you want to
- 48:29Speaker 4: come in here. Okay, I'm going to stare and look
- 48:32Speaker 4: at you, but I don't got reason to come eighty yards.
- 48:35Speaker 4: I'm not that threatened. So he moved in there in
- 48:40Speaker 4: plain sight, I think it was three hundred yards and
- 48:44Speaker 4: all the way to I think twenty or somewhere around there,
- 48:48Speaker 4: and it worked. He was a beat up buck. He
- 48:51Speaker 4: didn't have a big rack, but I mean he was.
- 48:57Speaker 4: He was a brew. So yeah, we got some great
- 49:01Speaker 4: decoy stuff coming, not so much on the next one,
- 49:03Speaker 4: but the one that follows.
- 49:06Speaker 2: So which of those things, though, would you end up
- 49:08Speaker 2: doing if you had to pick right now, gun to
- 49:10Speaker 2: your head. In that scenario, which fork in the road
- 49:15Speaker 2: you'd pick?
- 49:19Speaker 4: I would probably do the decoy. But it gets funky
- 49:25Speaker 4: there because you mentioned shin high grass. Shinned knee high grass.
- 49:31Speaker 4: In my mind, that's enough grass to do the belly
- 49:34Speaker 4: crawl slide down. But there's not a lot of winds.
- 49:37Speaker 4: So me trying to move in with the decoy, all
- 49:41Speaker 4: that grass in the way of the decoy unless I
- 49:44Speaker 4: don't have you know, unless I have it lifted up,
- 49:47Speaker 4: which is gonna look goofy, or the legs come up.
- 49:51Speaker 4: All that noise from the grass hitting that decoy is
- 49:54Speaker 4: going to be a huge problem and gonna be kind
- 49:57Speaker 4: of cumbersome. So that that's a really tough tough call
- 50:02Speaker 4: on that particular one. But I'd say it's probably gonna
- 50:08Speaker 4: be better suited for the decoy. But doesn't mean that
- 50:11Speaker 4: I won't try the belly crawl in there just to see.
- 50:14Speaker 2: So okay, let's let's change it just a little bit. Yeah,
- 50:18Speaker 2: this this scenario has given us lots of stuff to
- 50:20Speaker 2: play with us. I'm just gonna keep on riffing on
- 50:22Speaker 2: this one. Let's imagine that we had a little bit
- 50:25Speaker 2: more cover, so instead of like shin hi grass, we
- 50:28Speaker 2: have like waist high grass and some clumpy bushes of
- 50:33Speaker 2: some kinds of shrubs and stuff. So actually, you're not
- 50:37Speaker 2: hung up at eighty. You've got the ability to sneak
- 50:40Speaker 2: within range, and you you do so, so you're slipping in,
- 50:47Speaker 2: you're slow rolling it in. You make it all the
- 50:49Speaker 2: way to within shooting range. But at shooting range. So
- 50:53Speaker 2: for you with the with your bow, let's say at
- 50:55Speaker 2: twenty yards, a little word does swirl yeah, up, bounces
- 51:01Speaker 2: off to thirty, pauses and looks at you. What do
- 51:06Speaker 2: you do?
- 51:08Speaker 3: I take the shot if I got it.
- 51:12Speaker 4: If and a lot of times in my experience, if
- 51:17Speaker 4: they get you by smell like that, not always, but
- 51:21Speaker 4: a lot of times, they're going more than.
- 51:25Speaker 3: Thirty you know, they're not just they're out of there now.
- 51:29Speaker 4: If they get you by sight or sound, that's pretty
- 51:34Speaker 4: common because they don't they haven't confirmed what that site
- 51:37Speaker 4: for surely is or what that sound for surely is.
- 51:40Speaker 4: Smell totally different deal. Smell is the worst one because
- 51:44Speaker 4: it's one hundred percent confirmation they know exactly what that is.
- 51:48Speaker 3: Sound sound, They don't know site, they don't know.
- 51:55Speaker 4: I mean most of the time they don't know, like
- 51:59Speaker 4: without taking in just a little bit more time, and
- 52:02Speaker 4: that might.
- 52:02Speaker 3: Be a half a second, that might be a few seconds.
- 52:04Speaker 4: That might be the stare off for five minutes if
- 52:09Speaker 4: they caught movement, but you're buying time. If they're getting
- 52:13Speaker 4: you by as by one of those senses. Smells the
- 52:19Speaker 4: worst because it is confirmation, and that's why it's so
- 52:22Speaker 4: dangerous and you don't know when it's coming.
- 52:25Speaker 3: The second you make too much noise, you know, it
- 52:28Speaker 3: can get wild.
- 52:30Speaker 4: You know, the second you maybe get a little bit
- 52:33Speaker 4: off balance and create a little extra movement.
- 52:35Speaker 3: You know, it could get wild the smell.
- 52:41Speaker 4: Sometimes you catch the you know, catch it on the
- 52:43Speaker 4: back of your neck or something, and you're like, oh shoot.
- 52:47Speaker 4: But sometimes you don't, and you don't know when it's
- 52:50Speaker 4: going to hit their nose, and so you're behind the
- 52:52Speaker 4: eight ball a lot on smelled because you don't always
- 52:56Speaker 4: know when they're going to get it, and when they
- 52:59Speaker 4: get it, it's pretty serious deal to them.
- 53:13Speaker 2: Yeah, So you make a great point. So let's let
- 53:16Speaker 2: me adjust it just a little bit. Let's say you
- 53:18Speaker 2: step on a branch, it cracks, the buck jumps, We'll
- 53:23Speaker 2: say runs a what's the range for you, Jared? Where
- 53:27Speaker 2: you're like, Eh, I don't know if I want to
- 53:29Speaker 2: take that shot or not. What's that What would that
- 53:31Speaker 2: range be for you? Where you're like right on the
- 53:33Speaker 2: edge of man, I could I could probably pull it off,
- 53:35Speaker 2: but I don't know if I really want to. What
- 53:37Speaker 2: would that be for you right now?
- 53:38Speaker 3: Probably?
- 53:39Speaker 4: Probably probably twenty. But I've only shot all year long.
- 53:42Speaker 4: I don't shoot range until closer to hunting season. Other
- 53:45Speaker 4: than this summer, I've shot in range four times, and
- 53:50Speaker 4: so I'd feel good to twenty right now.
- 53:53Speaker 3: I mean, in the season though i'd well by season.
- 53:58Speaker 4: You know, if I shot two three sessions and practiced
- 54:02Speaker 4: to thirty, i'd feel good to thirty, right, you know,
- 54:04Speaker 4: in two to three sessions.
- 54:05Speaker 3: It factors in pretty quick with where I'm going with it.
- 54:10Speaker 4: Though, if I'm inside of fifteen and I cracked that stick,
- 54:13Speaker 4: I'm probably gonna shoot him right there right now. I've
- 54:16Speaker 4: gotten fast enough that if that happens, it's gonna be
- 54:19Speaker 4: an explosion.
- 54:21Speaker 3: It's gonna be really wild, really quick.
- 54:25Speaker 4: So, and we do have one one documented that it
- 54:29Speaker 4: worked good doing that.
- 54:31Speaker 2: So but what about this situation where what if it's
- 54:35Speaker 2: just a little bit outside of like what you feel
- 54:37Speaker 2: really good at. So let's say thirty five, he stepped
- 54:40Speaker 2: on the twig, he bounds off to thirty five, he stops,
- 54:44Speaker 2: he's head bobbing. He's given you time. But in your
- 54:47Speaker 2: mind you're thinking, man, maybe I can make the shot.
- 54:50Speaker 2: But if I do, he's gonna is he gonna duck?
- 54:52Speaker 2: Is he gonna spin? He's all amped up. But if
- 54:56Speaker 2: I just freeze and do nothing, I'm going to miss
- 54:58Speaker 2: this opportunity. Then maybe you're thinking, but maybe if I
- 55:02Speaker 2: hold still long enough, maybe he'll get curious and get
- 55:05Speaker 2: a little bit closer like they sometimes do, and they
- 55:07Speaker 2: don't really know what's going on. There's a whole bunch
- 55:11Speaker 2: of different ways this could go. In that scenario when
- 55:14Speaker 2: it's not a perfect easy shot, it's not the worst bump. Ever,
- 55:19Speaker 2: what about then.
- 55:23Speaker 4: I probably I would say what would probably happen now
- 55:30Speaker 4: is I would probably have already hit about full draw
- 55:35Speaker 4: by the time he was coming to a stop, and
- 55:37Speaker 4: that arrow's headed that direction about the instant he's coming
- 55:41Speaker 4: to a stop.
- 55:41Speaker 3: Not necessarily saying it would play.
- 55:43Speaker 4: Out like that, but that's probably what my instincts would
- 55:48Speaker 4: kick in and just do and it would all be like, whoa,
- 55:51Speaker 4: that just happened kind of. That's probably probably probably the
- 56:01Speaker 4: scenario on that one. So that's one of the advantages.
- 56:08Speaker 4: You know, there's pros and cons to traditional bows and compounds.
- 56:15Speaker 4: You know, you can with a traditional bow, you can
- 56:21Speaker 4: execute a very quick shot, and you can you have
- 56:27Speaker 4: the ability to become very versatile in that with that
- 56:32Speaker 4: weapon as well. It's a give and take though there's
- 56:36Speaker 4: a lot of situations where the compound has a significant
- 56:39Speaker 4: advantage in accuracy, range, drawback. You got to let off,
- 56:43Speaker 4: you can hold it, you know, I mean it's it's
- 56:48Speaker 4: if I'm inside of twenty, I'd much rather have a
- 56:50Speaker 4: long ago. I'm at an advantage now now at this point.
- 56:54Speaker 4: So I mean different weapons and different shooting styles, they
- 56:57Speaker 4: all have their strengths and weaknesses.
- 57:00Speaker 2: Yeah, so all right, I want I want to do
- 57:03Speaker 2: one last one in this scenario, one last possible difference.
- 57:07Speaker 2: So instead of you stepping on a twig and spooking him,
- 57:10Speaker 2: you get all the way to twenty and he stays betted.
- 57:15Speaker 2: We're down at this point, though it's taken more time. Now,
- 57:18Speaker 2: we're down to the last fifteen minutes a day light
- 57:23Speaker 2: and they're still betted. For whatever reason, they have not
- 57:25Speaker 2: gotten back up to move around for the evening. They're
- 57:27Speaker 2: betted down and you can see his vitals, but it's
- 57:32Speaker 2: not perfectly clear, like there's still some grass kind of
- 57:35Speaker 2: around it. Do you take the betted shot or do
- 57:38Speaker 2: you roll the dice and hope he stands up the
- 57:40Speaker 2: next ten to twelve minutes, or do you do something
- 57:42Speaker 2: to make him get up at this point?
- 57:44Speaker 4: Yeah, what I would what I would do there with
- 57:47Speaker 4: where I'm at now is keep in mind we're filming
- 57:52Speaker 4: all this, so I would ideally I would have whoever's
- 57:56Speaker 4: filming me be in a position where they can not
- 57:59Speaker 4: move and film everything that's about to happen.
- 58:03Speaker 3: And then I would try to get to fifteen.
- 58:08Speaker 4: Very as fast as I can, but it's slow enough
- 58:11Speaker 4: not to get detected. And then at that point I
- 58:15Speaker 4: would saddle up. And this is going to sound radical,
- 58:21Speaker 4: but I would move as quickly as I can, but
- 58:28Speaker 4: still trying to not get detected, if that kind of
- 58:31Speaker 4: makes sense.
- 58:32Speaker 2: So when you say you're trying to move as quickly
- 58:34Speaker 2: as you can, you were at twenty, and so you're
- 58:36Speaker 2: gonna just like I want to get to fifteen, you're
- 58:39Speaker 2: gonna walk fifth.
- 58:41Speaker 4: I want to get to fifteen without being detected. Once
- 58:44Speaker 4: I get to fifteen, now I'm gonna be ready to shoot,
- 58:52Speaker 4: and I'm gonna, you know, if it's tall enough grass,
- 58:57Speaker 4: I'm still going to be staying fairly low, but I'm
- 58:59Speaker 4: not cross anymore. I'm ready to shoot. And the second
- 59:02Speaker 4: he gets me now, I want him to get me
- 59:04Speaker 4: by sights or or or hearing. I don't want him
- 59:06Speaker 4: to get me by smell. That's why I got to
- 59:08Speaker 4: move quick, because now I've hit fifteen, and you want
- 59:11Speaker 4: him standing up or in motion of standing up, it's
- 59:16Speaker 4: it's uh and and then in one one fast motion
- 59:25Speaker 4: it uh.
- 59:27Speaker 2: It's like throwing a football.
- 59:28Speaker 4: Huh yeah, yeah yeah. And I've I've.
- 59:34Speaker 3: Worked on archery a lot to be.
- 59:35Speaker 4: Able to to to be confident enough to do that
- 59:40Speaker 4: not you know, I've ran the clock speeds and and
- 59:43Speaker 4: all of that, you know, on how fast white tails
- 59:45Speaker 4: react and that, and and that gave me the confidence
- 59:49Speaker 4: to implement that that one and it worked really well.
- 59:51Speaker 4: So yeah, I'm giving a lot away there. But that's
- 59:57Speaker 4: there's a great danger, like I said earlier, of getting
- 59:59Speaker 4: inside of twenty and then hanging out there for an hour,
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: especially when you don't have much wins. I mean, even
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: if you got fifteen mile an hour, pretty good wins.
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: One kick of that wind, when you get that tight,
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: you don't have much mark.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: When you're hanging out.
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: At forty to fifty, you know, you get a kick
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: of the wind. You got a quite a bit of
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: distance to get that straight for that wind to get
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: straight and back up. But when you get that tight
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: on them, you don't have much cushion, so you don't
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: have much time. And so time is is that's it's
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: a head scratch of what I just explained there.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: Well, it's it's impressive though too that you can pull
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: it off. Not an easy thing to do.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: No, No, it's it's it's not.
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: And I've I've learned a lot in a lot of
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: ancient archery stuff that that makes it seem impossible or
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: we how do I explain this to us? That sounds crazy,
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: But to actually do it, you know, trained off a
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: lot of this stuff, it's once I get to fifteen,
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: I feel like it's it's not hard now, but.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: It's required a lot of a lot of.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: What is the what is the most important skill set
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: or the very most important variable to really focus on
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: when trying to close in you know, to fifteen yards,
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: that last fifth let's say, from thirty yards to fifteen
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: I think a lot of guys maybe could maybe could
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: get to thirty yards on a deer and they would
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: feel like, man, I'm in his wheelhouse and taking that shop.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: But that last fifteen yards or the last five from
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: twenty to five, like from twenty to fifteen like super
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: super tight. What's like the ninja next level thing that
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: someone can do to be able to close that extra
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: distance if they're trying to do something like this, or
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: if they're just you know, trying to get better at
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: getting from forty to twenty whatever it is, what is
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: you know, what have you picked up that's allowed you
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: to get really good at closing those last few yards
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: the final ten.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: Gosh, every situation so different. The last two I shot,
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: I shot on my feet standing up.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: I was kind of half cocked on the one I
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: just explained. The other one I was fully standing up.
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: And both of those one was at four yards, one
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: was at four and a half yards, So.
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: I had just tall.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: Enough grass to pull off the one that I just explained,
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: And I had the guy that was filming Ethan at
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: fifteen with the camera and we had they were buried
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: in the grass enough, and I knew from experience we
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: had probably less in thirty seconds, and he was going
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: to have us by wind, and that was going to
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: be very difficult because I don't know when that's exactly
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: gonna happen. So that's why I made the decision I
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: did in that moment, and I felt kind of actually
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: I had already premeditated for the right situation, like this
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: is this is where I'm going to go with it.
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: And trained quite a bit in archery to do it.
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: But when I was in that stock, I felt a
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: little bit it behind because I didn't actually think about
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: doing that. And then all of a sudden it hit me.
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: I was like, what am I doing? This is what
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: I've trained, and I just I said, get ready, it's
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: happening right now, and it all came together and I
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: never had to. You know, now, in the old days,
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: I maybe would have been on my hands and knees
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: a little bit longer crawling in well, you make more
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: noise doing that, you stay more concealed. But I wasn't
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: worried too much about concealment anymore, so I could so
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: that that's because I'm I got fast enough.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: Shooting the bow that the concealment isn't just needed anymore.
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: So now I can That allows me to keep my
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: feet on the ground not worry so much about Once
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: I'm that tight, I don't have to worry so much
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: about them seeing me because that I'm gonna have a
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: half a second because they're gonna what is that? And
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: so the shot can happen fast enough that now I
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: can be quieter because I don't have to be a
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: worry about concealment as much once I get that tight,
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: if that kind of makes sense. So that allowed me
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: to actually, in that particular case, get get closer. Now,
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: if they weren't buried in the tall enough grass, they
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: would have me by visuals. I'd be on my hands
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: and knees. So it's everyone's a different chess match, you know.
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: Every every situation is a different a different deal, you know.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So let me put you on a different chess. Now.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: I'm going to take you out of this awesome scenario
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: where you can see stuff.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: Yeah, taking out that scenario.
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: By the way, I was just getting ready to get
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: dumped off to do a two mile timber stock, and
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: this buck he pushed a dough right out into the
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: crp on the edge of that timber out of nowhere.
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: They were going to drop me off. We're four hundred
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: yards fromhere. I was getting dropped off. I wanted to
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: do a timber stock all day, and you know, so
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: it was a beautifu one hundred and fifty inch public Land.
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: Bok and I was like, I wanted to do with timbersuck,
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: I gotta do it, you know, I can't not well,
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: I'm gonna let you do a timber stock now though,
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: because the next scenario I wanted to walk you through,
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: or have you walked me through, is a timber situation.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: Let's say that this coming season, you can't leave Wisconsin.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: You have to hunt Wisconsin, you have to hunt public,
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: and it has to be timber, okay, and you're gonna
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: We're on a particular day here, a week here, and
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: we've got kind of ten twelve mile in hour winds,
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: so there's a little bit of wind, otherwise dry, and
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: it is November one. Walk me through how you would
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: kill a deer, a decent buck on that kind of
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: day in Wisconsin.
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: What I'm going to probably do there's a different scenario
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: than what we started out with earlier. Talking by this point,
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: I'm going to probably already have some different pieces, and
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: I'm probably not going to spend much time in the
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: vehicle starting out, you know, in that particular setting of
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: a lot of woods, and you know, unless it's like
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: day one and I'm in a whole new region, you know,
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: then i might do that whole driving around and whatnot.
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: I'm probably going to focus. I would probably shift from
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: what we did what was working for us quite a
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: while back, which was a lot of the MFL grounds
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: and stuff like that that a lot of people didn't
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: know about and know there wasn't maps for and stuff,
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: and you know, a lot of those parcels were pretty small,
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: but they didn't get a lot of pressure. Now they've
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: gotten a lot of pressure, and it doesn't take much
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: pressure to blow out an eighty or one sixty. So
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: I'm probably going to go back to a lot of
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: the actual big public acreage stuff, you know, more along
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: those lines and put boots on the ground, and I'm
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: probably gonna cover ground in the timber. And if I
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: got ten to twelve dollar hour winds, well there's gonna
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: be enough leaf blowing and branch movement with that that
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: I can move at a faster rate in the timber.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: And I'm going to cover ground through the timber and
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: try to get a visual on a big one or
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: a dough or a pocketed doze, and you know, things
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: kind of shift in there. You find out a little
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: pocketed dose. It's November first, you know, I come across that.
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: I might try to get a little bit in the
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: right situation to catch a buck coming in and hang
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: out there for a couple hours and try to catch
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: a buck cruising in. So I'm still in the timber
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: like that. I'm still going for visual that you know
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: we did that I didn't. I only got to hunt
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: a few days this year. I filmed some, but but
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: I haven't done the timber that much in recent years.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: So I'm like I got into the timber and and
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: we were fortunate on that one.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: We're very lucky.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: I just caught just the slightest glint of movement and
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: it was pretty thick stuff and we were only I
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: don't know, we probably left the vehicle twenty minutes before that,
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: that's it. And TC was filming me, and I was
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: sure I just caught something, just like a just like
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: a deer.
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: I'm sure I seen something. What is that?
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: Sarah? And we just put on the brakes. We hardly
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: had any wind, and it was pretty thick stuff. I
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: just had a pocket that I could see across a
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: little bit of an open There was trees and stuff,
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: but that's where I caught it, probably seventy yards out,
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: but it was pretty seatory type stuff around there, and
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: I thought it was a deer. I thought I saw
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: a tailwig and I think it was about five minutes.
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: We we just didn't move our location, and I kept
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: eyes on and kept glassing in there and I couldn't
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: and then all of a sudden, boom, there's one hundred
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: and sixty inch nine pointer with a with a dough
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: and I was reading it and I'm like, I think
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: she's just coming in, you know, And I was like,
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: and they looped in and there was one pocket there
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: where it was he stopped broadside at fifty and it
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: would have been beautiful for a compound. But so, I mean,
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: we were going in one hundred percent. And that's how
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: I would do it with timber too, is I'm going
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: in one hundred percent to try to get a visual
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: in the timber and then go from there.
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: You know, how fast are you moving when you're working
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: your way through, you know, with a little bit of wind,
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: so you've got some amount of sound cover. You know
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: when you say covering distance and covering ground, is that
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: like you're stopping and glassing every twenty yards or use
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: cruising or what.
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: A lot of times in the timber. A lot of
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: times in the timber, I'm going off my eyes for
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: picking them up. I don't That's how I pick most
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: of them up. Occasionally I do it with with binoculars,
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: but usually I'm picking something up by eyesight. I keep
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: my eyes going while I'm moving. We actually moved in
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: fairly aggressively into we started to slow roll it a
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: little bit when we got close to where I picked
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: up that visual.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: I don't know how fast we were going. We weren't
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: stop in every.
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: I don't think we were really stopping hardly at all, really,
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: but we weren't moving at We were quietly moving at
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: a slow pace, steadily but quietly and fairly slowly. But
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: we weren't really doing too much stopping in that particular case. Now,
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: that was some fairly heavy brushy with a lot of
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: twisting and turning of branches, so it totally disrupts. You know,
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: if you're in the a lot of the wooded stuff,
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: like in Wisconsin, you got fairly not always, but you
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: got fairly vertical. Like let's say you're in the hills
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: of Wisconsin bluff country or whatever. A lot of times
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: that you don't get a lot of that brushy stuff.
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: Well I shouldn't say you don't. You can.
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: You get clear cuts and all kinds of stuff.
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: But where a lot of times in that timbour, you
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: can see one hundred and fifty two hundred yards. Sometimes, well,
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: I'm going to be moving at a pretty good clip
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: through there because I can see them long before they
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: can hear me, and a decent, pretty good chance of
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: if I'm playing the wind right on where I think
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: they maybe would be. I've got that somewhat to my advantage,
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: so I'm not as risk, so there's a better chance
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: I'm going to pick them up, then they're gonna pick
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: me up. Therefore I can move and cover ground quicker.
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: Now you get into that hairrier, thicker stuff. You got
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: to put on the brakes more. So, it's.
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: The game.
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: The ground game in the timber is very it's so
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: variable of you know, there's not one pace I move
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: at all the time. There's would you.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: Would you give a shot even if you had no
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: wind and dry so it's like potato chip leaves and
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: no wind, would you still try something like that? If
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: that was like you know, a hunt this or I
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: don't hunt at all?
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, And when it gets that quiet, you can
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: there's you have the element of hearing as well, so
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: you can slow down your pace really slow and hear them,
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: but if you're moving out of slow enough face and
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: we A perfect example of that would be in twenty
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: ten in the Regroup video. We went into a piece
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: of public in the dark that we had never laid
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: eyes on before, so we didn't even know what we
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: were getting into. And it was a pretty quiet day
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: and it was my first day of that hunt in
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: that area. We drove through the night to get there,
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: never seen this ground in daylight, and I almost got it.
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: It was a one hundred and sixty sixty five inch buck.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: I should have had them, but I didn't. But it
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: was a pretty calm, calm day, I mean, Chrispy Frost
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: like no win. And then the hunt kind of went
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: on for a couple of days. I should have got
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: another big one.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: The next day.
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: I was having a rough hunt. We left, went to
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: Kansas for three and a half days. That could have
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: went better too, and then we had something come up
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: and had to head back to Wisconsin and we decided
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: to hit for the morning. I or again where this
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: hunt took place, and again we didn't have I mean,
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: it was like no wind and we just we just
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: went in there using our ears a lot, moving real slow,
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: and I shot one hundred and forty some inch or
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: low forty eight pointer, and we we played, you know,
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: we could hear them up there, and we kind of
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: pushed it. We kind of pushed getting closer, and then
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: we put the brakes on and him and a couple
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: of small bucks ended up falling right into our lot
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: and it worked out perfect. I think he was twenty
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: twenty four. Actually that's the first buck we ever shot
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: facing with the head on shot, so it was an accident,
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: but it worked out. So you can do it on
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: the ground in those scenarios of what you just describe
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: those super still frosty, Well, you got your ears, and
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: that can be a huge advantage. You know, it's it's.
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: More suited to.
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: Not very well for you sneaking in on them, but
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: in terms of you hearing them coming. And you got
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: some advantages in that that way in department too. But
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: in those particular cases though, where it's real quiet like that, though,
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: you want to pick your pathway of how you're moving
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: through the timber in a way where they're probably going
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: to land up in your lap or land in your
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: lap on their own. Like if I'm going in and
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: I got wind of what you describe earlier ten twelve,
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: fifteen mile an hour in the timber, I'm not necessarily
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: gonna be on where I think they're gonna be walking,
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: and I might be a distance off trying to get
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: a visual and then planing more for a stock approach.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: Whereas on those crispy mornings like that, you're not gonna
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: get away with much either. So it's gonna you're gonna
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: have the element to hear in them coming, but you're
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: gonna want to be closer to the court, the natural
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: cord or of how they maybe be moving.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Yep, So do you pleat do you pre plan out
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: a route like, Hey, I'm gonna follow this edge, or
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: I'm gonna walk this pinch point, or I'm gonna cruise
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: along the downwind side of this dough betting area or
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: something like that. On a day like that.
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: And not so much from the area, I might glance
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: at it and kind of like roughly like I think
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: I'm gonna move through it like this, But once I
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: get in there, I might totally change what my premeditated,
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: loose plan is.
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: So any of those.
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: Things that I gather from looking at an areil, I
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: try to put that into a loose planned, but it could.
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: I'm not going to stick to what because I don't
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: want to call an aeral not real. But it's not
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: as real as me being there in person and seeing
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: every aspect of what I'm dealing with, So I want
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: to I don't want to get too fixated.
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: On what's not real.
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: The aerial is real, but it doesn't give you as
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: much as being there on site in person. So I
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: want to keep that plan loose that I might be
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: with if that makes sense.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: That doesn't make sense, Okay, I've got one last scenario
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: and then I want to run you through like a
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: set of rapid fire quick questions. Okay, so the final,
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: this last scenario. Let's imagine you've been on this hunt.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: You're gonna we're gonna put you back in not necessarily Wisconsin,
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: but we'll go kind of middle country, somewhere mixed AG,
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: mixed whatever, and really the specifically the train don't matter.
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: This one. You spot a good buck. He is on
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: ground that you're not sure. Let me rephrase this. You
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: are on a buck. He moves into ground that on
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: your app shows public. So you say, ah, man, big
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: giant shure buck on on X or whatever tool you're using,
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: you see like, yep, he just crossed over into public.
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: Game on, you cruise down the road where there's a spot,
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: like there's a ditch along the road, but finally there's
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: a spot you can pull off, and when you get
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: to the spot, you can pull off onto the public
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: to park. There's a bunch of no trespassing signs private
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: property no trespassing signs there. So your map shows public
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: on the ground though there's no trespassing private property signs,
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: and your big buck is now cruising across this piece
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: of potentially public land.
- 1:18:52Speaker 4: What do you do, Well, you gotta confirm it. You know,
- 1:18:56Speaker 4: I went through some stuff in twenty sixteen. Two scenarios.
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: Never had an issue over the years, but I ran
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: into two scenarios and I started to get very confident,
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: and I should have double checked a little bit deeper.
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: And there's some more to it. But and that information
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: has gotten more and more concrete at the county level,
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: which then you know, whether it's on X or any
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: of the other map providers out there, then they get
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: more concrete information, but they're getting it from the county.
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: So the counties have gotten better.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: About that.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: So you got to In our latest video on Cuffed,
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: we had a scenario that Matt was their filming and
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: I had hunted this area before and it was broken
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: up piece of public, piece of public over here, and
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: this was always private in the past, and.
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: So I'm banking on that.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: I haven't actually pulled up that side of the road
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: yet we got the visual, and I hadn't been up
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: the other side of the road yet.
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: Well, we come around and.
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: I had seen a sign from way out, like a
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: mile out, but I didn't even register. Yeah, I just
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: assumed it was a private because I had always been private. Well,
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: then there was a bunch of walk in hunting.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: Signs I remember seeing this. Now, Yeah, there.
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: Was a bunch of walk in hunting signs in which
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: it had always been private. So it threw us for
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: a loop because now I'm like, well, this big buck
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: that was on private, then jumped on public, then got
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: on private. But then as the direction he was going,
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: there's another piece of public. So I was sure he
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: was going to end up on that other piece of
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: public and zip right through that private. Well, it turned
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: out the whole thing had changed over to public over there,
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: according to the signs. Well, then I pull up the
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: map app from the state. This isn't from on X,
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: this is direct leave from Kansas. It doesn't show it
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: as public, and neither does the book I had, the
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: printed book for that year doesn't show it as public.
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: So now it's like, well, I got signs, it's always
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: been private in the past.
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: What do you do?
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: I've got And in that particular case, there was two
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: big bucks. One that was on what now appears to
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: be public, but just off of what for surely is public.
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: The other one had disappeared on.
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: What is potentially public according to the signs, but had
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: always been private. So now I'm in like this dilemma
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: of like, well, we got to find out, but this
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: could be awesome, but it would have been nice to
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: know that earlier. And you know, we eventually did figure
- 1:21:55Speaker 4: it out and it had all changed over to walk it,
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: you know.
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: So what's the best way really quick? I just I
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: asked this because I think a lot of people are
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: finding themselves in these scenarios now right where we're hunting
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: new places and we live and die off of our phones.
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: What's been the best way you've found to quickly confirm
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: like yes or no on this being public or not?
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: Who do you call?
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: Well, in this particular case.
- 1:22:22Speaker 4: With the Kansas walk in, and I went through this
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: the season after twenty sixteen, I was in Kansas again
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: and I was filming a couple of old guys, older guys,
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: and we pieces marked as public. It's on the book,
- 1:22:38Speaker 4: it's on the app from the State walk in. We
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: go in there, it's opening day. See two big bucks,
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: part of the public. It continued on that way. There
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: was no fence line. As we come around this corner,
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: the public land signs you'd never guess it, showing it
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: by signage and by the app and by the mapp
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: from the state it's public. So we watched this big
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: buck and he looked like he was probably a booner.
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: And then there was one hundred and forty in sure
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: with him. They dipped into this.
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: This dry draw excuse.
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: Me, and we had dropped off one of the old
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: guys's son on the other end of the piece, and
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: he was kind of slow making his way through from
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: this direction, and we're going to meet up with him
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: and then maybe hit this part that continued, So we
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: went down. They eventually made their way. We went down
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: to meet him and as we're and we're all excited,
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: like we got two big Bucks. They're in a draw.
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: It's a thin draw. I think we can good chance
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: we can get both bucks. One of them's a tank.
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: And there was a big pond between us and the Bucks,
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: and so we needed to kind of go around it. Well,
- 1:24:01Speaker 4: as we went around it, I see this red sign
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: and I'm filming, and I'm like, I know what the
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: red sign usually means, no longer in walking, but I
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: wanted the reaction from the old guys to catch so
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: I didn't say anything. You know, they were gonna see
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: it in three seconds. So but I'm like, in my head,
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: I'm like, what is going on? If that pond hadn't
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: been there, we would have vlined right to those big
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: Bucks and shot them. And this had come up earlier
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: in the bostseason, probably an hour and a half away.
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: I was with Matt on that hunt. A piece that
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: had always been public was marked as public walking on
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: the map from the state and on their app. I
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: have their app on my phone. It come out a
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: week before right during the run, got pulled out a
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: walk in. They didn't pull the signs down on one road.
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: I sat there for three hours. It was a morning
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: that I decided I can see a long ways. I'm
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: gonna hang out here for three hours and just watch
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: from the vehicle and see if a buck pops up
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: out any of these draws, public signs, public on the map,
- 1:25:18Speaker 4: public in the book, all from the state. Eventually I
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: caught one that looked like it could be a shooter
- 1:25:24Speaker 4: way over by the other road.
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: We drive around the other road a red sign.
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: I'm like, what so in that particular case, I eventually
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: I first tracked down the game warden. He didn't know
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: much about it, which you know, it's not his department
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: to necessarily know, but he got me in contact. That
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: was a Saturday. I was actually quite impressed. But he
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: ended up getting me in contact with the head of
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: the walk in program at the state. And I wasn't
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: too thrilled because I started to put some things together
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: and there was three parcels of property, one of which
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: I was on two days before that. Now I pulled
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: up to and there's a red sign there, and two
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: days ago there wasn't. So I'm not in a real
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: good state coming out of what happened in twenty sixteen.
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: And all the information's coming from the state and he
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: clarified all three pieces. He said, Okay, the guys that
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: put the signs out on this one, that's actually not right.
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: That's actually still public. And I'm like okay, and he's like, yeah,
- 1:26:30Speaker 4: the other piece that came out here over the last week,
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: but they probably didn't get the signs up on the
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: other road. And I'm like, that's that's neat. So if
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: I'd walked in from that other road, technically i'd have
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: been according to your maps and the signs, I would
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: have been legal. But it's.
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: If it's pulled out, it's pulled out, you know.
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: Yeah, But how can anyone expect folks to know that
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: in the situation like that, That's crazy.
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: Well, and I was very frustrated because back in Wisconsin,
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: when I used to hunt all them MFL grounds and
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: forest crop lands before they were ever mapped, I for
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: several counties went through and made my own Google maps
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: with the lines of the parcel, so I had it
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: right on my phone before the maps had come out.
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: For all these counties. I'd go in and plot the coordinates,
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: is what I'd do. So I had that access. So
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: when it comes to in this case, Kansas there, I
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: would have their Google Earth created maps of their walk
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: in on my phone, and I know how quick and
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: easy because once I got that those maps created on
- 1:27:41Speaker 4: my end for Wisconsin, it was really easy the next
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: year to just go through and confirm if any came
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: out at the end of the year, and then Uptown
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: came out.
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: It's an eyeball on that layer.
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: You turn it off, update your map, and boom that
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: parcel's no longer in right, And so I kind of
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: was like, well, I cannot stand the book being printed.
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: You know, I was like two things.
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: I think once it goes into walking, you got to
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: you know, guys are coming from non resident spending five
- 1:28:10Speaker 4: hundred dollars. They're expecting your book to be accurate. So
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: if you're pulling out Walkin's partially through the season at
- 1:28:17Speaker 4: any moment's glass and you've got a printed book here
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: that says it's public, it creates a lot of confusion.
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: And I'm like, so I think that maybe once it's
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: entered into walking, it can't come out till the first
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: of the year.
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: It would maybe be a good policy.
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: And then if we can't do that, maybe at least
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: update the maybe at least update the Google earth Maps,
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: because that's instant, you know. I mean that takes five
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: seconds to I shouldn't say five, but thirty seconds to
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: go in there and you save the new kl kml
- 1:28:48Speaker 4: or kmz file and boom. At least guys using not
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: now have accurate So I've ran into a few scenarios
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: of that. Now. I had those two and no trouble
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: came about of those. They were caught in time and
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: he confirmed the piece that I had been on two
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: days or three days before that is I was still
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: good then, but you know it, it could have been
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: really bad, especially in the case that them two older
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: guys with them two big bucks in that draw that
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: pond hadn't been there, we'd have went right in there
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: and probably I mean it was set up pretty well
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: to get to get one or two.
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: Out of there, and then it's like what you know,
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: So I mean.
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: That one with matt in in uncuffed, it was you know,
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: you know, they didn't change anything from from those situations
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: that happened years ago where I contacted them, Like they
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: can still pull them walk ins out at any point
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: in time. And and you can't trust their Google earth Maps,
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: and you can't trust their printed maps because they they
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: I don't have that, they don't have it implemented on
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: to like the first of the year. See, like in Wisconsin,
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: it wouldn't matter if it changed ownership or not. You're
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: in contract, and you know, with those programs, and so
- 1:30:13Speaker 4: they they didn't have an option to till the first
- 1:30:19Speaker 4: of the year. They couldn't be so even if a
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: new owner came in and bought that piece, if they
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: were part of that program, they had to wait till
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: the end of the year to pull it out of
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: that program. And so that kept it pretty clean on
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: that front. So it can get messy out you know.
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: I mean I've run into guys. I mean, even what
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: happened in twenty sixteen therein you know, in Minnesota, that
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: should have never happened. Yeah, I should have done somewhere digging,
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: but that should have never never happened. There should have
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: been signs put up that was marked wrong. And those
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: people knew that, and so did the game word and
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: that information got back to me. I had somebody that
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: detected that in my video and they come up to
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: me and they said I was bow hunting that, and
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: I thought the same thing. After a few times and
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: they're like, something's not right, and they identified exactly what
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: peace without me telling them and who the warden was,
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: and that.
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: Threw me for a loop because he told me.
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: He said, well, the warden told me that that's not public,
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: and I was like, well, the wharton told us he
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: didn't know anything about it, and that was after you
- 1:31:26Speaker 4: So what was going on there? You know? You know that, yeah,
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: there was I should have done some more thorough but
- 1:31:35Speaker 4: I mean that I looked at everything and that it
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: was there was some responsibility on other parties there on
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: that particular one too, that would have made.
- 1:31:46Speaker 3: It pretty.
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: There was multiple instances of other people hunting that ground
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: that thought it was public that year.
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: Man, Well, I think it's all. It's all a good
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: reminder to just double check, right, I mean, that's that's
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: the thing is, like, it's with all these regulations, I
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: find myself always trying to remind myself, like double check,
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: see if anything change, make sure this actually matches up,
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: make sure the map matches, the website matches, the whatever,
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: because there is unfortunately, there's a lot of things to
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: keep track of, and in the end, if someone wants
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: to give you a hard time, it's going to fall
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: on you. So that's a good.
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's one thing. You know.
- 1:32:44Speaker 4: It's written in a way where it's your responsibility. So
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: even if the signs are up that show at public
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: even if you have the state maps, uh, it's still
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: your responsibility the way the law is written, which is
- 1:32:57Speaker 4: very frustrating if you end up in one of those situations,
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: you know. So we we had that situation. Nothing really
- 1:33:06Speaker 4: came about of it, but it would have been a
- 1:33:08Speaker 4: really bad deal on the ride and where the refuge
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: wasn't marked as refuge. It was marked as public hunting
- 1:33:14Speaker 4: from Iowa DNR map that we had, and they didn't
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: have signs up marking it.
- 1:33:19Speaker 3: We went in by boat.
- 1:33:21Speaker 4: We went in by boat, had never hunted there before,
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: but oh, all this public acres, We'll go in by boat.
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: Spot one hundred and forty five inch.
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: We were having a pretty tough hunt already, and that's
- 1:33:32Speaker 4: why we were cruising. We were an hour and a
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: half two hours from where we normally are, and there
- 1:33:37Speaker 4: was a couple of questions earlier that day on pieces
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: that we called in another county award to get clarity on,
- 1:33:43Speaker 4: and in that particular case, we're boom parked, spotted this
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: big buck parked the boat on the beach, and we're
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: going up the beach and we're getting pretty close to
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: where we're in kill zone, Like we're I think sixty
- 1:33:55Speaker 4: seventy yards out from this buck in the weeds. Turn
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: back and look, and there's a guy and a dog
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: over by our boat, and he's walking towards us, and
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: we kind of realize, we're like, we need to get
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: him stopped or we're gonna blow this stock. So chance
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: he goes, you know, sneaking back, and I go with
- 1:34:13Speaker 4: him to film this, you know, like, hey, we're on
- 1:34:16Speaker 4: a buck. Turns out it's a gaateboard and we're on
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: a refuge. If he would have stopped, if you would
- 1:34:22Speaker 4: have stayed at the boat and not killmar away, we
- 1:34:25Speaker 4: would have killed that buck right right in front of him,
- 1:34:28Speaker 4: right in front of him, and never knew. And when
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: I went down there, you know, of course, they make
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: up a lot of excuses of why it, you know,
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: and in my mind, I'm like, there's no excuse. A
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: refuge is not refuge if it's not if it's not
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: marked that way on a map and signs. I went
- 1:34:43Speaker 4: down there and did a range fine, because they say, well,
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: there's signs. The closest sign to the water's edge was
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: one hundred and fifty seven yards up in the timber.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's tough.
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: It's tough to have a refuge if you got marked
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: on the map otherwise, you know. So, oh, you know,
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: I mean, nothing serious came about of.
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: That, but I was like, yeah, stressful.
- 1:35:10Speaker 4: Yeah, so you know, and I've heard stories of of
- 1:35:13Speaker 4: you know, and I think overall things are getting getting better,
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: you know. I a few years later, I h I
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: saw some changes on some some of the different apps
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: and things where it told me they're getting more accurate
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: information from the county level and that and that's to
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: be expected that things get more and more refined.
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: Yeah, And I got to believe that now there's more
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: and more people doing this kind of thing and looking
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: into these kinds of things. I think probably the various
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: government officials are finding these oversights and realizing, oh wow, yeah,
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: there are people actually wanting to come in here, and
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: we don't have it properly signed or labeled. So so
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: hopefully this stuff gets fixed. Hopefully, uh, hopefully things become
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: a little bit more clear, because it can get very
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: confusing out there.
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it can't. And then every state's different, you know.
- 1:35:59Speaker 4: You know how it is in the West, where it's
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: you're you're come across, there's fence lines and stuff all
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: the time, and that doesn't mean that it's a property line.
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: A lot of times that public continues, whereas like in
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: the Midwest, you come across a fence line and almost
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: always that's a property line, and so it can get
- 1:36:17Speaker 4: it can get pretty you know. Well, you've got a
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: lot of experience by this point, and a lot of
- 1:36:22Speaker 4: these different states too, to have seen how things change
- 1:36:26Speaker 4: from state to state.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: And yep, you just gotta gotta stay up on it,
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: do your best, right, all right, I'm gonna let you
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: go here, Jared, with final few rapid fire quick questions.
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: You're allowed just like a one word answer to the okay, okay,
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: just first thought right off the bat, here we go.
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: Does the moon matter to deer movement? Yes or no?
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: Yes?
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: Would you take a fifty yard shot at a white
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: tail with your bow? Yes or no?
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: No, I shouldn't.
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: I'll give you.
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: A tiny done it before by log but with a
- 1:37:01Speaker 4: compound all the Yeah, yeah, I did that all the time,
- 1:37:04Speaker 4: back in the early days, you know, and not shouldn't
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: say all the time, but it's you know, I mean,
- 1:37:08Speaker 4: it's pretty easy with a compound, but.
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: Possibly yeah, Okay, if you can only have one of
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: these tools for the rest of your hunts, would it
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: be a set of rattling antlers or a grunt too,
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: rattling antlers expandable or fixed blade broadheads?
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: I'm a fixed.
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: Should you stop a buck with some kind of sound
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: before shooting? Yes? Or no? A moving buck?
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: All right, this one of the it's relative.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: It's relative of the hunt, hunter to and experience and
- 1:37:42Speaker 4: certain things.
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: Yep. Yeah, and you've got a very unique situation compared
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: a lot of guys too, with how you're shooting and everything.
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: Yeah, And there's the the animals react different when you
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: stop them compared to sometimes it's easier to gauge if
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: if the movement's very steady and there's no panic in
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: the hunt in the arch, sure he can probably execute
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: that shot much smoother by not stopping them with less
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: reaction from the animal.
- 1:38:09Speaker 3: So there's a lot of variables in there.
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: You know, some some archers may be better to stop
- 1:38:15Speaker 4: that year, but your reaction from the animal is going
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: to be you know, so that that one's a tough
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: one to really susy.
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, this one you can you can riff
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: on a little bit. Imagine that I control hunting access
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: across the country, hunting rights, like I can control whether
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: or not you get a hunting license. Okay, and I'm
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: going to take your hunting license away for the rest
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: of your life unless you kill a mature buck this year.
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: You need to kill one mature buck this year, and
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: if you don't, no more hunting the rest of your life. Okay.
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: But here's the trick. You only have one day to
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: get this done, in one place to do it. So
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: I need you to pick the date on the calendar
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: that you think you'd have your very best chance to
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: kill a mature buck. And I need you to describe
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: for me the location that you would set yourself down on.
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: Now you're a little bit different. A lot of guys
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: would pick like a tree stand in a certain kind
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: of zone. I know you're different, so I'll let you
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: like you can. I'll pick the spot you want to
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: be dropped off at. You have to be on foot.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: You can describe to me what kind of spot you
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: want to be dropped off at and what kind of
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: stuff's around you? All right, high stakes hunt, Give me
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: the date and the situation to be dropped off at.
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: I can pick the location, right.
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, you can whatever location you want, Okay.
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: I'd probably go.
- 1:39:37Speaker 4: November twenty second, and I'd go Iowa, and the terrain
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: would be wooded with mixed with some CRP grass, you know,
- 1:39:54Speaker 4: button up to kind of an intermix of both. That's
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: that's what I would do.
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: And why why November twice second? That's later than a
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: lot of guys pick, and and why mixed timber and
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: cover in CRP versus like a wide open thing that
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: we see so much?
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: Okay, Well you said mature buck, right, yep? Okay, So
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: in the early days, I maybe would have picked Kansas.
- 1:40:17Speaker 4: But Kansas on the planes has gotten a lot more
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: pressure and over the years, and so it can take
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: several days to actually land a big buck visually a
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: big mature buck on public in a good scenario to
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: kill it. So not so much in the early days.
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: And then you know, ten years ago, I probably would
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: have picked Kansas in this in this particular scenario. The
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: reason I went late in Iowa is because I would
- 1:40:46Speaker 4: pick an area that has a lot of bucks and
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: a lot of dose, and I could probably find a
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: mature buck on that day around those dates within kind
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: of what I laid out there, that's cruising or trying
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: to find another dough. There's enough good bucks in that
- 1:41:09Speaker 4: area and enough dose that some are probably still coming
- 1:41:13Speaker 4: in and you know out and I would as far
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: as like, we don't know what conditions we're going to
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: get to deal with, whether we're going to get a
- 1:41:22Speaker 4: lot of wind or not. So having timber as an
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: option and grass as an option, I can work my eyes,
- 1:41:30Speaker 4: I can get in the timber if I need to.
- 1:41:33Speaker 4: And that's kind of what I did with a little
- 1:41:35Speaker 4: bit of time I got last fall. And I did
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: get on a shooter every day, so I didn't kill one,
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: but I you know, I I also damn near had
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: one hundred and seventy five inch typical in my lap too, so.
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: You know, I had a good few days getting out there.
- 1:41:56Speaker 4: But it was a situation much like I described, and
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: so that's that's why I went. I kind of digested
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: it after, like I wasn't quite expecting that, but I
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: dissected all the different factors after I seen what I've
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: seen as to why that was really good for.
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: Me, So it makes sense. So yeah, all right, what
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: I would do? I like it. I like the plan.
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: I think it'll work. Hopefully you'll never find yourself in
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: a situation like that where you only have one day
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: to get it done and uh, such igh stakes. But uh,
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: but tell me this last thing. What should folks be
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: looking forward to from White Tail Adrenaline? Uh, in the
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: in the short term or in the long term. Anything
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: you want folks to know about anything people should be
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: checking out right now as they listen to this. What
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: do you want people to know?
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, we're as far as the next film goes.
- 1:42:54Speaker 4: It's very far along in production. It still has some
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: time to go on it, but it to to really
- 1:43:03Speaker 4: make it what it needs to be that people really
- 1:43:06Speaker 4: like about our content, you know, it's it's gonna be
- 1:43:11Speaker 4: an incredible set, a lot of really good hunts and
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: really good bow hunts. And then moving forward, Yeah, it's
- 1:43:23Speaker 4: it's a fairly large project. The next one. H moving
- 1:43:27Speaker 4: forward after that, there won't be people won't see as
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: much gun, it'll be much more bow and even the
- 1:43:32Speaker 4: next one has quite a bit of you know, quite
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: a bit higher ratio of bo i'd say, and some
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: I can't wait for the next one to come out, but.
- 1:43:42Speaker 3: It's gonna be.
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: I I expect it to be the new, the new
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: you know, Defiance has been for a long time, probably
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: our overall top picked video, and a lot of people
- 1:43:53Speaker 4: have really enjoyed the Uncuffed series. The next one coming out,
- 1:43:57Speaker 4: the Hunts are gonna come. They came together so smooth
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: and such incredible hunts that.
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: It maybe be too much if it came.
- 1:44:05Speaker 4: Out too quick on top of Uncuffed, it maybe be
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: too much.
- 1:44:09Speaker 3: So I'm excited about it, you know.
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: And uh, I just want to thank everybody who hung
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: in there for the production of Uncuffed. And it seems
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: like we got through that and and it seems like
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: people really enjoyed have enjoyed Uncuffed, and so uh some
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: people are new to the company surprisingly buying DVD's. That's
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: that's awesome, welcome and uh and those that have been
- 1:44:42Speaker 4: there for the long haul, I thank you for for
- 1:44:45Speaker 4: hanging in there and and.
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: Uh so and you've got more available on digital right, like,
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: like that's becoming more of an option in the future.
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: Is that correct, Yeah, it will be.
- 1:44:55Speaker 4: Resurgence is on digital for available for purchasing. For those
- 1:45:00Speaker 4: that don't know how our business model and company works.
- 1:45:03Speaker 4: We don't take outside you know, sponsor. We don't do
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: sponsors funded you know, by companies within the industry.
- 1:45:10Speaker 3: There's a couple of companies.
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: I use a lot of optics, you know, and and
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: and and whatnot. But I don't do any exchange of
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: money for for any to to fund the productions. So
- 1:45:21Speaker 4: people actually buy the content. What we try to do
- 1:45:23Speaker 4: is produce it to the best of our abilities, to
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: produce a really good product. The offsetter is it is
- 1:45:31Speaker 4: not free too, you know, uh for people, so it
- 1:45:35Speaker 4: is purchaseable and I do in time plan to have
- 1:45:39Speaker 4: all of them available on digital.
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: But the vinyl.
- 1:45:45Speaker 4: Record discs look cool on the bookshelf, and uh so
- 1:45:49Speaker 4: thanks for everybody that's been buying them over the years.
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: And uh and for the.
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: People that really are like you, better not stop making DVDs.
- 1:45:59Speaker 4: We don't have any plan to stop making DVDs for
- 1:46:02Speaker 4: a while, but yes, I hope to have Uncuffed available
- 1:46:08Speaker 4: on digital around the end of the year. Is where
- 1:46:10Speaker 4: it looks right now, So.
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: Cool man, keep up the good work, keep on grinding that.
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: I know it sure seems like a heck of an undertaking,
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: but we all have been enjoying your hunts over these
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: many years. We've all learned a lot. You've been an innovator,
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: someone who has really brought a lot of new things
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: to light for folks, and I, for one, I'm very
- 1:46:30Speaker 2: appreciative of that.
- 1:46:31Speaker 4: Thank you, Thank you well. When you make a lot
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: of mistakes, That's one thing I've been doing some reflected
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: because I'm working on in our story page on the website,
- 1:46:39Speaker 4: and so I've been posting up some of the old
- 1:46:40Speaker 4: photos and it's taken me down memory lane a little bit,
- 1:46:43Speaker 4: and I was like, you know, from the get go,
- 1:46:45Speaker 4: we we made the decision we're going to show our
- 1:46:48Speaker 4: mistakes as they unfold.
- 1:46:50Speaker 3: And I think the caveat on the flip side.
- 1:46:54Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a little hard to swallow sometimes, right, but
- 1:46:57Speaker 4: you just over time, I mean, we actually accepted it
- 1:47:00Speaker 4: pretty well. But that refined us. You know, you're facing
- 1:47:03Speaker 4: the truth of what went wrong, and so you eventually
- 1:47:07Speaker 4: put some dirt in those holes or would you know,
- 1:47:10Speaker 4: some of them and other ones then you know come
- 1:47:13Speaker 4: to development.
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: But that's we are humans. Yeah, yeah, exactly, so that's
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: the truth.
- 1:47:18Speaker 4: Anyway.
- 1:47:18Speaker 3: Well, thanks a lot.
- 1:47:20Speaker 4: I really appreciate you having this has been fun and
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: hopefully people got something out of it.
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: I know they did. Let's talk again soon, Jereck. If
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: you can add just a little bit of a wrinkle
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: to your usual strategy and see what you can learn.
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: So that'll say, appreciate you being here, Appreciate you being
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: a part of this community. Best of luck on your
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: upcoming hunts, and until next time, stay wired to Hunt.
