No fluff, no spin, just real talk, real numbers and the truth you wish your accountant told you sooner. Let's get into it. Welcome back to the Cynical CPA, real conversations about accounting, bookkeeping, taxes, and everything in between. I'm Corrine Hasbiny, CPA and Enrolled Agent, and today we're talking about something every business owner should be doing right now: a mid-year accounting and tax checkup. We're halfway through the year. Six months are behind us, and six months are still ahead. That makes this one of the best times to stop, look at your numbers, and make adjustments before small issues turn into expensive problems. The good news? If your books aren't in order, that's okay. The bad news, ignoring them until January isn't a strategy. In today's episode, we're going to talk about why mid year is the perfect time to review your books, the warning signs that your accounting and bookkeeping needs attention, why your bank balance doesn't tell you how your business is actually performing, how mid-year tax planning can save you money and eliminate surprises, and the simple steps you can take today to finish the year stronger than you started it. Because here's the truth. Your books are the financial roadmap for your business. And if you don't know where you are today, it's almost impossible to make good decisions about where you're going tomorrow. So grab your favorite beverage and an open mind, and maybe after this episode you might want to take a look at your books. Let's get into it. Let me ask you something, and I want you to be honest with yourself. How are your books really looking right now? Not the version you assume is fine, not the version you plan to fix later. And definitely not the version you've been avoiding every time you open your accounting software. I'm talking about reality, because we are officially at mid-year, and this is the moment where business owners usually fall into one of two categories. Either you've been staying on top of your books or you've been quietly hoping nothing explodes before tax season. And I say that with love, but also with experience, because every year I see the same pattern. June through August is when the books either get cleaned up. or completely ignored until January turns into panic season. Mid-year is not just a checkpoint, it's your financial reality check. It tells you very clearly whether your systems are working or whether you've been guessing your way through your business. And if we're being honest, most business owners fall somewhere in this list. You don't actually know your year-to-date profit. You're mixing business and personal expenses just this once, but doing it repeatedly, your books are behind, maybe a little, But maybe a lot. Reconciliations are something you meant to catch up on after tax season, and your financial reports are basically ignored until someone forces you to look at them. None of that makes you unusual, but it does make your numbers unreliable. And unreliable numbers don't just create stress, they create expensive decisions. Now let's talk about tax planning, because this is where most people unintentionally set themselves up for stress. There are really two types of business owners. Those who do tax planning and those who do tax surprises. Tax planning is looking at your numbers while you still have time to adjust things. Tax surprises are opening your return in March and saying, wait, why do I owe that much? Mid year is the window where planning still works. Right now, you can still adjust estimated tax payments, adjust your payroll withholding, look at entity structure decisions, and perhaps reduce your tax bill before the year closes. But none of that happens by accident. It only happens if you look early enough. Let's be real about what happens when you don't check in mid-year. You don't just get a little behind. You get surprised by your taxes because nothing was planned. You get missed deductions you didn't track properly, you get cash flow surprises you didn't prepare for, and you scramble in January trying to recreate a full year of activity. And the worst part? Most of it was preventable. Not with complicated strategies. Just with attention. So if you're listening to this and thinking, okay, I should probably look at my books. Here's your simple mid-year checklist. Start here, not with everything, just this. One, reconcile your accounts through June. If your bank and books don't match, nothing else matters. Two, look at year-to-date profit, not your bank balance. Cash in the bank is not the same as profit. Three, check your estimated tax payments. Are you on track? Are you underpaying, or are you just guessing? Four, flag anything unusual. Big spikes in income or expenses don't fix themselves later. Five, schedule a mid year review with your accountant. Even one focused hour can change your tax outcome. You don't need perfection, you need clarity. Mid year accounting isn't about everything being perfect. It's about regaining control. Because when your numbers are current, you stop reacting emotionally to money decisions. You stop guessing. and you start actually running your business with data instead of guessing. So I'll leave you with this. If your books aren't in order, you are not alone, but you are also not stuck. Mid year is the moment where you either take control of your numbers or let the rest of the year decide them for you. And if you're already thinking, yeah, I really need to look at this, that's your sign. Your books are one of the most valuable tools you have as a business owner. When your financials are current and accurate, you can make better decisions. Manage your cash flow with confidence, plan for taxes, and actually understand how your business is performing. If you're listening today and realizing your books are behind, your numbers don't make sense, or you've been putting off tax planning, don't wait until the year is over. Mid year is the perfect time to get back on track while there's still time to make meaningful change.
